00:00:00...creeps into view. New York City re-emerges as a major venue in the boxing world.
00:00:07Last year, of course, Holyfield Lewis 1 took place in this building, Madison Square Garden.
00:00:12Now Oscar De La Hoya returns here for the second time in his career,
00:00:16hoping to match the success he had on his first visit,
00:00:19which was an explosive second-round knockout of Jesse James Leha.
00:00:23And whenever there's boxing in this building, there are celebrities here.
00:00:26James Gandolfini here to lead his group, the celebrated cast of the HBO mega-hit show The Sopranos.
00:00:35There's welterweight contender Shane Mosley, Samuel L. Jackson on hand as well.
00:00:41Conan O'Brien has been here since the earliest preliminary bouts.
00:00:46Good job of being a boxing fan, Conan.
00:00:48Timmy Smith's new movie, Price of Glory, coming out very soon from New Line's Cinema,
00:00:56the screenplay for that picture, written by former New York Times boxing writer Phil Berger.
00:01:02We'll look forward to seeing Price of Glory in theaters very soon.
00:01:05Well, coming as it did just six months after the fiasco of Holyfield Lewis 1,
00:01:11there were many who thought of De La Hoya-Trinidad as a fight that might rescue boxing.
00:01:17Instead, it only compounded the problem and left many shaking their heads,
00:01:21wondering exactly what happened and why did it happen that way.
00:01:27When I started to hear the scorecards, you know, 114, 114,
00:01:33I'm like, oh my gosh, no, please, something's going on.
00:01:36The winner by majority decision, Feliz Trinidad!
00:01:42For Oscar De La Hoya, last September's welterweight championship against Felix Trinidad
00:01:47ended in a nightmare, one which he admits he helped bring about
00:01:51by listening to his closest advisors.
00:01:53The game plan for Felix Trinidad was, in a sense, totally wrong.
00:01:59I should have maybe used half of the fight to box him
00:02:05and half the fight to go in for the kill, for the attack.
00:02:09Oscar started strong, frustrating his opponent with quick feet and an accurate right hand.
00:02:15I didn't think he was going to be that easy.
00:02:17So vulnerable to my speed and to the side movements, you know, and my leg movements.
00:02:21From my eyes, at least, De La Hoya winning the fight with his feet so far.
00:02:26I was almost in shock because I just couldn't believe how easy a target he was.
00:02:33I was in awe of myself, you know, I was like, wow, I can really do this to him.
00:02:37And if there's an early surprise offensively, it's De La Hoya's ability to land his right hand.
00:02:43Seven months earlier, De La Hoya had used a furious final round to defeat Ike Duarte.
00:02:47But on this night, the plan was to protect the league.
00:02:50I knew I had eight, nine rounds in the bank.
00:02:54I was very confident of that.
00:02:57So I kept on hearing my corner.
00:03:00Three minutes, three minutes, get the clock.
00:03:03By choosing to stop fighting in the final rounds,
00:03:05Oscar left the judges with an option they might not otherwise have considered
00:03:09and brought his corner's advice into question.
00:03:12I don't want to blame anybody because they're not up in that ring
00:03:16fighting against that guy, against that opponent.
00:03:19But it's just me by myself.
00:03:22They can help me out, but they're not going to go inside that ring and punch the guy for me.
00:03:27It's just me inside that ring.
00:03:29Still, dismissed from Team De La Hoya was Gil Clancy,
00:03:32who had told Oscar to avoid Trinidad in the late rounds.
00:03:36What effect this defeat will ultimately have on Oscar remains to be seen.
00:03:40But he can look to Ray Leonard, who suffered his career's first loss 20 years ago
00:03:44in a 15-round slugfest against Roberto Duran.
00:03:47As far as undefeated fighters, we have a coat of admissibility.
00:03:52Once you're beaten, that coat somewhat diminishes slightly.
00:03:58It's up to the individual.
00:03:59It's what's inside to resurface that confidence,
00:04:04to resurface that believability that they are still a champion.
00:04:08And very few guys can do that.
00:04:12Of course, I was in shock because it was my first loss in so many years.
00:04:16I was saying to myself, you know what, I'm going to stay at home
00:04:18and not let people see me.
00:04:21But then I said to myself,
00:04:23I'm going to go out in public and see how people react.
00:04:26And I was like, whoa, I mean, these people are like really on my side.
00:04:29Leonard got revenge against Duran and went on to win world titles in five weight classes.
00:04:34The question is, can Oscar make the necessary changes facing him?
00:04:38He's truly aware that he has to be a little more aggressive.
00:04:42His rounds must be a little more decisive
00:04:43to make sure that there's no room for questioning of a decision.
00:04:50And that should not and that will not be a problem with him.
00:04:54But Oscar De La Hoya, Madison Avenue poster boy,
00:04:56still faces a multitude of distractions.
00:04:59He got into training camp late for this fight,
00:05:02concentrating on recording a CD
00:05:04and raising doubts about his dedication to boxing.
00:05:07Right when I started training camp for this fight,
00:05:09I had to refocus.
00:05:11I had to tell myself, hey, it's time to train
00:05:13and start working hard
00:05:15and forget about the music for right now.
00:05:18When I train, I have to be very focused
00:05:19and just concentrate on my boxing work.
00:05:23So abrasive issues surround Oscar De La Hoya
00:05:25as he enters the ring tonight
00:05:27for the first time since that fateful fight last September.
00:05:30And the long-run significance of that setback
00:05:33may appear more clearly to all of us moments from now.
00:05:38All right, so let's talk to a man who's been there.
00:05:41George, it took you a long time to recover emotionally
00:05:45from the first defeat of your career against Muhammad Ali.
00:05:48What do you think about what you see of De La Hoya
00:05:50as he tries to recover from his first loss?
00:05:52Well, I think it's all possible,
00:05:54but every time you get in that ring
00:05:56and all of us made that mistake and can make that mistake,
00:05:59you look across the ring, you've got to make certain
00:06:01you're facing the challenger of today.
00:06:03Trinidad is not here.
00:06:05And that's when the problems start.
00:06:06When you're trying to fight Trinidad
00:06:07and another guy has another plan,
00:06:09another weight, another reach,
00:06:11things can be bad.
00:06:12I mean, real bad.
00:06:13And not only does De La Hoya have to fight Darryl Coley tonight,
00:06:16but he's already angered Coley by having said leading up to the fight
00:06:20that he didn't know who Coley was,
00:06:21that he hadn't looked of any videotape of Coley,
00:06:23and he is constantly negotiating the next fight,
00:06:26possibly with Trinidad,
00:06:28possibly with Shane Mosley,
00:06:29not yet decided.
00:06:31This seems to me like a massive distraction.
00:06:32And it's strange, too,
00:06:33because it could be like I did with Ron Lowell,
00:06:36deja vu all over again.
00:06:37Well, that's what Coley's looking for,
00:06:39that's for sure.
00:06:40He thinks of himself as a big puncher
00:06:42and claims that he has a vision
00:06:44of what's going to happen in the fight.
00:06:45So what of it, Larry?
00:06:46Can Darryl Coley upset Oscar's apple cart
00:06:49as Oscar looks forward to mega fights
00:06:52against Mosley in Trinidad?
00:06:54Right now, Jim,
00:06:55he's just a contestant in a game show,
00:06:58which is called
00:07:00Who Wants to Fight a Multimillionaire?
00:07:03Everybody.
00:07:04We don't know what's in the prenuptial agreement,
00:07:07but it is too late for an annulment.
00:07:11Hopefully, Coley can fight the fight
00:07:14as well as he's talk the talk.
00:07:16He's been delightfully arrogant
00:07:19during this week,
00:07:21predicting a sixth-round knockout for himself,
00:07:25calling De La Hoya overrated,
00:07:27punchless, and heartless,
00:07:29and besides all that,
00:07:30he's just a Ricky Martin wannabe.
00:07:34Coley is a pretty good fighter,
00:07:35which is something I said about Joey Gamache
00:07:38about a half an hour ago,
00:07:40but the question still remains.
00:07:44Does he have more than words
00:07:46to take De La Hoya's heart away?
00:07:50That's a line from the Bee Gees, Jim.
00:07:52Next thing you know,
00:07:53you'll be quoting the Backstreet Boys.
00:07:55All right, so let's take a look, Larry,
00:07:58at a graphic that will show us
00:07:59the top welterweights,
00:08:01and you give us some more of the business perspective
00:08:03in this loaded division.
00:08:05Well, Trinidad is fighting David Reed
00:08:07for the junior middleweight championship next week.
00:08:10Win or lose, he's going to really stay at that weight.
00:08:14He had strained to make 147 before.
00:08:18A rematch with De La Hoya may take place
00:08:20at a so-called catch weight.
00:08:22There's De La Hoya, James Page,
00:08:25heart-punching fighter who owns one of the belts.
00:08:28Shane Mosley, sensational lightweight,
00:08:31who has moved up.
00:08:32There's talk of him fighting De La Hoya
00:08:34if there's no rematch with Trinidad.
00:08:37And, of course, there's Vernon Forrest,
00:08:40up-and-coming undefeated fighter
00:08:43who's also looking to find a place for himself
00:08:47in the welterweight picture.
00:08:49All right, Mosley seated at ringside
00:08:51about eight or nine feet away from us,
00:08:53ready to pounce should the opportunity
00:08:55present itself a little bit later on this evening
00:08:57after a potential De La Hoya win.
00:09:00Fighters are just about ready to come into the arena.
00:09:02Let's take a look at the tail of the tape
00:09:03for Oscar De La Hoya against Daryl Coley.
00:09:07Coley is a veteran of the sport.
00:09:09He quit amateur boxing in 1992,
00:09:11years short of those Olympics in Barcelona
00:09:13where De La Hoya won his gold medal.
00:09:16Half-inch height advantage for Coley,
00:09:17two-inch reach advantage for Daryl.
00:09:19They both weighed in at 147.
00:09:21Coley's people thought maybe De La Hoya
00:09:23got a little extra help making it off the scale
00:09:26with the markers notched at 147.
00:09:29Tonight, De La Hoya enters at 154,
00:09:32and Coley at 151.
00:09:34Very moderate weight gains in the wake of the weigh-in.
00:09:37Punch that numbers, Larry.
00:09:39Here's a look at some average punches,
00:09:41give you an idea of how active these fighters are.
00:09:44But De La Hoya's are against Trinidad,
00:09:47and Coley's against Willie Wise.
00:09:50Not quite the same class of opposition.
00:09:54Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer,
00:09:56Harold Lederman.
00:09:57The Oscar De La Hoya.
00:09:59Daryl Coley fight is scheduled for 12 rounds
00:10:01using the unified rules of the Association of Boxing Commissions.
00:10:05There is no standing eight count.
00:10:07No three-knockdown rule.
00:10:09Only the referee can stop the fight,
00:10:11and you cannot be saved by the bell in any round,
00:10:13including the 12th and final round.
00:10:16Jim.
00:10:17All right, Harold,
00:10:18and now let's get ready to take a look at Daryl Coley.
00:10:22He is from Capitol Heights, Maryland,
00:10:24just outside Washington, D.C.
00:10:26Early in his amateur career as a boy,
00:10:28he was introduced to the most famous fighter ever
00:10:31to emerge from his region, Sugar Ray Leonard,
00:10:33and says that he got some pointers from Leonard
00:10:35that helped him along the way.
00:10:37And he's grown up among quite a group
00:10:39of Washington-area fighters
00:10:40who have all made a name for themselves
00:10:42in professional boxing.
00:10:45Among them, Mark Johnson,
00:10:47Heath Holmes,
00:10:48Reggie Green,
00:10:49William Joppy,
00:10:50and Charm Bay Mitchell,
00:10:51all friends of his.
00:10:53But none of them have made
00:10:54the kind of money he'll make tonight,
00:10:56some $650,000.
00:10:59And yet, though,
00:10:59he's never made much money.
00:11:01He also claims
00:11:03he's never worked a day in his life
00:11:05because an older brother,
00:11:08a working guy,
00:11:09has supported his dream
00:11:11all these years.
00:11:13Yeah.
00:11:14Jeff Coley,
00:11:15credit where credit is due.
00:11:16If Daryl Coley makes good
00:11:17on his big opportunity tonight,
00:11:20it's because his older brother, Jeff,
00:11:22spent years making it possible for him.
00:11:26Coley taking his time
00:11:28entering the ring.
00:11:28Arena relatively quiet
00:11:44as Coley makes his way in.
00:11:46We'll see if De La Hoya
00:11:47can light them up
00:11:48with his entrance.
00:11:50De La Hoya
00:11:50has been a little bit slow
00:11:53to get his boxing gloves on
00:11:54and make way
00:11:55toward getting out
00:11:56of the dressing room
00:11:57after the abrupt
00:11:58ending of the first fight
00:12:00between Gotti and Gamaj.
00:12:13He's savoring
00:12:14every moment of it, Jim.
00:12:16And the record for Daryl Coley.
00:12:26As Larry told you,
00:12:27he has predicted
00:12:28a sixth-round knockout
00:12:29of De La Hoya
00:12:30and said,
00:12:30I didn't even train
00:12:31to fight 12 rounds.
00:12:3234 wins.
00:12:34The one loss
00:12:34was to Oba Carr
00:12:36in 1995.
00:12:38Two draws,
00:12:3824 KOs.
00:12:40He's fought his whole career
00:12:40in this weight class.
00:12:45One of his disparagements
00:12:46of De La Hoya
00:12:47is to say,
00:12:48my 24 knockouts
00:12:49are against welterweights,
00:12:51not junior welterweights
00:12:53and lightweights.
00:12:55It's indisputable, Jim,
00:12:58that De La Hoya
00:12:59has not been a
00:13:00knockout force
00:13:02as a welterweight.
00:13:03He's only had
00:13:04one of them.
00:13:05He has stopped
00:13:06several other opponents.
00:13:08But he hits hard enough
00:13:09to get your attention.
00:13:11But De La Hoya,
00:13:12for his part,
00:13:12claims that he thinks
00:13:13that's partially because
00:13:14he's been surrounded
00:13:15by advisors
00:13:16who have told him
00:13:17that he has to box
00:13:18against stronger opponents.
00:13:20And Oscar says
00:13:20he's now come to the conclusion,
00:13:22I'm the strong one.
00:13:24I should be going out
00:13:25and destroying them.
00:13:26He's now come to the conclusion,
00:13:28I'm the strong one.
00:13:29I should be going out
00:13:30and destroying them.
00:13:31To be honest,
00:13:32he's said these kind
00:13:33of things before.
00:13:34In fact,
00:13:35he said exactly
00:13:36the same thing
00:13:36prior to the Obakara fight
00:13:38last summer.
00:13:39And isn't it a little odd
00:13:41that at the age of 27,
00:13:44he's still searching
00:13:45for a style
00:13:46that he believes
00:13:47that suits him.
00:13:50And in leading up
00:13:51to this bout
00:13:52and continuing
00:13:53to look for the right style,
00:13:55De La Hoya
00:13:56has dismissed
00:13:57veteran trainer
00:13:58Gil Clancy,
00:13:59who was a fixture
00:14:00in the corner
00:14:01for several fights.
00:14:02Clancy,
00:14:03at age 78,
00:14:05sits at home
00:14:05in Malvern, Long Island
00:14:06and watches
00:14:07the fight tonight
00:14:08after having been removed
00:14:09from the De La Hoya team
00:14:10in favor of
00:14:12sole training duties
00:14:13for the man you see
00:14:14on the right of your screen,
00:14:15Robert Alcazar.
00:14:17Alcazar
00:14:17has been with De La Hoya
00:14:19ever since his amateur days,
00:14:21his early amateur days,
00:14:22and now once again
00:14:23reemerges
00:14:24as the only trainer
00:14:26in the De La Hoya picture.
00:14:27and the record for Oscar.
00:14:34The one loss
00:14:35to Felix Trinidad.
00:14:37Many ringside experts
00:14:38felt as though
00:14:39he was still ahead
00:14:40on the scorecards
00:14:41despite his questionable tactics
00:14:43in the closing rounds.
00:14:4425 KO's
00:14:45among those 31 wins,
00:14:48but as Coley accurately
00:14:49pointed out,
00:14:49many of the KO's
00:14:51in lower weight classes
00:14:52before he reached
00:14:53the welterweight division.

00:18:45Daryl!
00:18:46Daryl!
00:18:46Daryl!
00:18:47Daryl!
00:18:59Daryl!
00:19:00All right, Daryl, Oscar, we're boxing for the IBA
00:19:05welterweight championship of the world.
00:19:08I expect a clean fight.
00:19:11Obey my commands at all times.
00:19:13Protect yourself at all times.
00:19:15Shake hands.
00:19:16Come out boxing at the bell.
00:19:17Good luck.
00:19:1712 rounds.
00:19:21So far, this has been the yada, yada, yada, yada fight of the year.
00:19:25Jim, let's see how they articulate in the more dangerous
00:19:30language they're about to engage in.
00:19:33You mean the trash talking that's led up to the fight?
00:19:35Yeah.
00:19:37I don't even know who he is.
00:19:40I'm going to KO him.
00:19:43Oscar's got to get focused and remember who he is
00:19:46and don't let the last fight define him.
00:19:49Just get out there and be yourself.
00:19:51Coley has got to win every round.
00:19:53If you wait around, you never get another chance.
00:19:55So you're saying that Oscar has to avoid trying so hard to avoid the non-aggressive tag
00:20:03that he gets reckless in there and gives Coley more chances that he deserves.
00:20:06Yeah, remember who you are and what you've got to do with him.
00:20:08You've always been a good fighter.
00:20:10That fight had nothing to do with who you are now.
00:20:14I've always felt the style that works for Oscar is boxer punching.
00:20:18Start out boxing and look for opportunities to attack as he sets them up.
00:20:23Oscar's done a little weight lifting this time,
00:20:25so he'll be able to get those hands out there no problem.
00:20:28Leading with the left hook there.
00:20:32Coley is known as a guy who fights in spurts.
00:20:37Coley starts out firing punches up the middle.
00:20:41Jab in the right hand.
00:20:42As the fight goes on, you might see him widen his arm
00:20:45to go for more power.
00:20:46When he widens his arm, he could be creating opportunities
00:20:50for De La Hoya to come up the middle.
00:20:58Coley has a tendency to bend a little bit just before he jabs.
00:21:02That's not the way you get the tall guy like Oscar De La Hoya.
00:21:05You've got to stand up a little bit
00:21:06and then just go right on top of him for the jab.
00:21:09It's De La Hoya who stalks Coley early in the fight.
00:21:18Coley looking to counter.
00:21:19Wings a right-hand shot half off the shoulder,
00:21:22half off the side of the head.
00:21:25De La Hoya obviously working early
00:21:28to try to get his left hook into the mix.
00:21:30It's generally his most damaging punch,
00:21:33although he said,
00:21:34I was astonished at how successful I was with the right hand
00:21:37in the early rounds against Felix Trinidad.
00:21:39I used to think my right hand was just there to look good.
00:21:42Now it's actually a weapon for me.
00:21:44Coley is doing something pretty interesting
00:21:46for a guy who's supposed to be reluctant.
00:21:48He's not looking left and right.
00:21:50Keeps his eyes right on him.
00:21:52On Oscar De La Hoya.
00:21:54As though he's got a plan with that right hand.
00:21:57Just keeps it there.
00:22:02Coley.
00:22:07Coley is running, but his eyes are not running.
00:22:15It's a restive crowd.
00:22:18They were quieted by the worry about Gamache
00:22:21when he went down so hard
00:22:22in the second round against Gatti.
00:22:25Then, of course, there was a bit of a delay
00:22:27getting the fighters into the ring for this fight.
00:22:29Now they begin to warm up just a little bit.
00:22:35And if they speak Spanish in Oscar De La Hoya's corner,
00:22:38our interpreter there is Hector Garcia.
00:22:44Hector Garcia, you have to go to the mic.
00:22:49Start with a jab.
00:22:51More jabs and more jabs.
00:22:54And then go to the body.
00:22:55You're looking at the head.
00:22:57You have to go to the body.
00:22:58Keep your distance.
00:23:00Jab and then go to the body.
00:23:02Okay?
00:23:04See you moving.
00:23:05Slow your moving down a little bit.
00:23:06Walk and move it.
00:23:07Side to side.
00:23:08He's coming straight in here, okay?
00:23:09All right.
00:23:10So you get side to side,
00:23:11but double your jab up, okay?
00:23:13And there's nothing in your jab, okay?
00:23:15All right.
00:23:15Come on, baby.
00:23:16Keep your hands up, girl, when you finish, baby, okay?
00:23:18It's all right.
00:23:18It's all right.
00:23:19It's all right.
00:23:19It's all right, baby.
00:23:20You're the man.
00:23:21It's all right.
00:23:22Now give me some more jabs.
00:23:23Stand down, stand.
00:23:24Stand down.
00:23:24When you put your right hand,
00:23:25you rope the hook.
00:23:25Five seconds out.
00:23:26Coley showed some nice poise in the first round,
00:23:35this being his first major fight
00:23:38here in Madison Square Garden against a star.
00:23:43Past copy box numbers would indicate
00:23:45that Coley is the busier of the two fighters,
00:23:47generally throws more than 60 punches a round.
00:23:49De La Oya hovers between 50 and 55,
00:23:52and the pattern held in the first round
00:23:54as Oscar threw only 37 punches,
00:23:56but landed 15.
00:23:58Coley threw 52, but landed only seven.
00:24:00De La Oya missing with a right hand
00:24:02across the top there.
00:24:04Gets a little left hook in
00:24:05as Coley comes toward him,
00:24:06and then the more effective punch
00:24:08with the left hook to the body.
00:24:10De La Oya has got to be very cautious, you know?
00:24:14Some amateur, some professionals
00:24:15get in the ring with amateurs
00:24:16and never get their rhythm together,
00:24:18and they get whipped.
00:24:20You can't, it's hard to fight
00:24:22below your talent.
00:24:23Are you implying that Coley
00:24:25as an amateur, George?
00:24:26But he's fighting maybe in the same kind of zone
00:24:29he was with Trinidad,
00:24:30and he's with a different kind of guy.
00:24:32You've got to bring your level down sometimes.
00:24:35De La Oya misses over the top
00:24:37with the left hook,
00:24:38but lands a right and a left,
00:24:40and momentarily knocks Coley back on his heels.
00:24:45Now the left jab from Oscar
00:24:46is starting to be a little more pinpoint accurate.
00:24:48He only threw nine jabs in the first round
00:24:51and landed only two by CompuBox numbers.
00:24:54Oscar stepping up the jab activity here in round two,
00:24:57and again, clearly trying to set up the left hook.
00:25:01You know, if you've got a good left jab,
00:25:02you'll never be able to perform without it.
00:25:04He's got it, use it.
00:25:08Coley becoming left hook conscious,
00:25:10Oscar fires a right cross.
00:25:11De La Oya has landed two strafing left hooks
00:25:16to the body in this round.
00:25:17His two most effective punches here.
00:25:22Now Oscar starts to bounce.
00:25:25He has to have a little bounce in his feet
00:25:27before he can accurately land punches.
00:25:29He hasn't been doing that.
00:25:30Now we see a little.
00:25:31And you saw the body shot by Coley
00:25:33trying to retaliate,
00:25:35and De La Oya comes back to the ribcage himself,
00:25:37setting up a clean right hand upstairs.
00:25:39Look for the bouncing eye in Oscar's feet,
00:25:43and then you'll find some accuracy and aggression.
00:25:45And Coley is visibly dropping his guard, George.
00:25:48Go about in front of us.
00:25:50They hurt.
00:25:51Left hook, right hand.
00:25:54So already the pattern of the fight
00:25:56begins to change as Darryl Coley
00:25:58drops his guard to try to deal
00:26:01with Oscar De La Oya's body punishment.
00:26:04Now Coley is sticking out of his left hand
00:26:07a little tapping with it.
00:26:07You've got to close that distance.
00:26:09So he's not even allowed to do that.
00:26:11Still a little close to Oscar's feet.
00:26:15At this point, he doesn't have the reach advantage.
00:26:18Coley does.
00:26:19Coley's better.
00:26:19Body shots by De La Oya.
00:26:22Coley bouncing into a corner to get away.
00:26:25Round two has been a big one for De La Oya.
00:26:28Coley has not been offensive in this round.
00:26:31The occasional counter,
00:26:32but by and large,
00:26:33it's been the De La Oya body attack.
00:26:35Continue to work the way you're doing it.
00:26:57You have to be a little busy with your jab.
00:27:01Your right hand through his body
00:27:02and then go up to the top.
00:27:04Keep working.
00:27:05Step over to your legs up,
00:27:09right hand.
00:27:10Come on.
00:27:11Take the body shot, okay?
00:27:14Come on, man.
00:27:14You're still moving good.
00:27:18He tried to set the hook up,
00:27:19but he can't hit you
00:27:20if you turn it, okay?
00:27:21And stay where she's going to try the hook, okay?
00:27:23So please come back.
00:27:24Second out.
00:27:25Second out.
00:27:26Please come back.
00:27:27Second out.
00:27:27Second out.
00:27:28Please come back.
00:27:31Daryl Coley,
00:27:32in the weeks leading up to the fight,
00:27:33has been disparaging
00:27:34in his comments
00:27:35about Oscar De La Oya's punching power.
00:27:38But just as Felix Trinidad's punch-out foot
00:27:40went down in the first six rounds
00:27:42against De La Oya,
00:27:43Coley's punch-out foot
00:27:44begins to drop here.
00:27:4652 thrown in the first round,
00:27:47only 40 in the second round,
00:27:49six landed,
00:27:50as De La Oya landed 25 punches,
00:27:52most of them to the body.
00:27:54But so far,
00:27:55De La Oya is accomplishing his goal
00:27:58of dictating the fight.
00:28:01Not adapting to what the opponent does.
00:28:05Let the opponent try to adapt
00:28:06to what he does.
00:28:11Bizar can convince Oscar
00:28:13to focus on his prowess
00:28:15as a body punter.
00:28:16I think it'll make him
00:28:17a more effective fighter.
00:28:19Well, he's allowing Coley
00:28:22to get into his rhythm now,
00:28:24and you don't want him to do that.
00:28:25You had him moving,
00:28:26you had him bouncing away,
00:28:28keep it going like that.
00:28:30A lead left hook by De La Oya,
00:28:33and two more vicious left hooks
00:28:35to the body.
00:28:40This is Oscar the Destroyer
00:28:41at this moment.
00:28:43A far cry from the man
00:28:45who all but turned and ran
00:28:47in the closing rounds
00:28:48against Trinidad.
00:28:49Good left jab,
00:28:51the best of the night.
00:28:52Once you push in,
00:28:53step forward with that weight.
00:28:55Oh, it hurts.
00:28:58And Coley seems uncertain
00:28:59as to what it is
00:29:00he wants to try to counter.
00:29:04Coley trying to stick the jab
00:29:06to De La Oya's guard.
00:29:07There, he commits to that one
00:29:09after simply pawing
00:29:10with the first three.
00:29:11Yeah, the rule is,
00:29:12you go two jabs to the body,
00:29:14get the guy to drop his hand
00:29:15a little bit,
00:29:15and you come on top
00:29:16of the right hand.
00:29:17There's a good jab by Coley.
00:29:18Coley is doing it with the jab.
00:29:20Jab low, low, low, low,
00:29:21and they come up high.
00:29:23Oscar for the moment
00:29:23has stopped throwing punches.
00:29:25That allows Coley
00:29:26to begin to develop a rhythm
00:29:27with his left jab.
00:29:37Oscar now should look
00:29:38for a little bounce
00:29:39in his legs again.
00:29:39Hard left hook landed upstairs.
00:29:42Coley took it pretty well.
00:29:46Coley tries a right uppercut.
00:29:48De La Oya backs away.
00:29:49Good jab again.
00:29:52De La Oya has the best
00:29:54left jab in boxing,
00:29:55no doubt about it.
00:29:58Interesting statement.
00:29:59No doubt about it.
00:30:01Left jab.
00:30:05If that's the case,
00:30:07does he use it enough?
00:30:09I think not.
00:30:10Tonight he's looking
00:30:11to get over a good left hook,
00:30:12and he's been successful,
00:30:13but get that jab in there,
00:30:15make that back hurt.
00:30:16Those guys back.
00:30:18start backing up
00:30:19the count of that jab.
00:30:20After a while,
00:30:20he can just throw hooks easily.
00:30:23Here's this rally yet by Coley
00:30:25as he comes back
00:30:26against De La Oya.
00:30:28Coley has thrown
00:30:29many more punches
00:30:30in the last minute and a half.
00:30:32De La Oya taking
00:30:32a little bit of a breather
00:30:34in the latter part
00:30:35of round three.
00:30:36Let's go.
00:30:41Let my hands go.
00:30:43They're moving good,
00:30:43but you hit him
00:30:44with two good jams, okay?
00:30:45He don't like them jams, okay?
00:30:47Come on,
00:30:47put a little more
00:30:48combination together.
00:30:48You got him turning now.
00:30:53You got him turning.
00:30:54Make him turn.
00:30:55He's all balanced.
00:30:56Make him turn.
00:30:57Make him turn, okay?
00:31:00You go first,
00:31:01and then you go to the body.
00:31:03Don't start on the top.
00:31:05Start with the jab.
00:31:06Go to the body,
00:31:07and then go off to the top.
00:31:08You have to think.
00:31:12Relax, relax,
00:31:13and you have to think.
00:31:15You're going to catch him.
00:31:16Coley has said
00:31:18that because he's always
00:31:19been a welterweight,
00:31:20he believes he's stronger
00:31:22than De La Oya,
00:31:24but those body punches
00:31:25seem to have disabused him
00:31:27of that,
00:31:29and he hasn't done
00:31:30much standing and firing.
00:31:32Ironically,
00:31:33a reported part of the fallout
00:31:34from the Trinidad fight,
00:31:36a better relationship
00:31:37between Oscar De La Oya
00:31:38and his previously
00:31:39hypercritical,
00:31:41sometimes forbidding dad,
00:31:42Joel De La Oya.
00:31:44Joel De La Oya
00:31:45is said to have said to Oscar
00:31:47after the Trinidad fight,
00:31:48I'm proud of you.
00:31:50None of Oscar's 31 victories
00:31:51ever produced that response.
00:31:53Now, supposedly,
00:31:55they are on much better terms
00:31:56than before
00:31:56as Joel takes his customary seat
00:31:59near the corner
00:32:00at ringside.
00:32:02Now, Coley,
00:32:03what he's trying to do
00:32:04in his corner
00:32:04is told him,
00:32:05make Oscar go around
00:32:06to the left side
00:32:07and make him pick up
00:32:08his left foot
00:32:08and follow him
00:32:09step by step.
00:32:10There's a hard right hand
00:32:11up the middle
00:32:12and a left hook
00:32:13by Coley,
00:32:13and De La Oya
00:32:14momentarily stunned.
00:32:16Now Coley shows his power
00:32:18and his willingness
00:32:19to exchange.
00:32:20Coley on the offensive,
00:32:21De La Oya
00:32:22not firing back.
00:32:24Coley looking for a knockout.
00:32:27Two rounds earlier
00:32:28than he predicted.
00:32:29He said it would be
00:32:30in the sixth.
00:32:31De La Oya ducking,
00:32:32getting out of the way,
00:32:34Coley doing all the firing here.
00:32:36Oscar De La Oya
00:32:37is hurt.
00:32:41Darryl Coley caught him
00:32:43by surprise
00:32:44and landed the one-two sharply
00:32:46and De La Oya
00:32:47has not thrown a punch since.
00:32:49Now he goes back to work.
00:32:52I think that Coley now
00:32:54has Oscar alert
00:32:55like he ought to be,
00:32:57but that's a good thing
00:32:58for Oscar.
00:32:59He's allowed him
00:32:59to waste some of that energy
00:33:01he had been conserving also.
00:33:02Make him punch some.
00:33:03He's getting paid.
00:33:05Make him throw some punches.
00:33:06Hey, did these guys
00:33:07see the Barrera-Morales
00:33:08fight last week?
00:33:09Left hook lands
00:33:10for De La Oya.
00:33:11Coley wobbling.
00:33:13Oscar goes to the body.
00:33:15Sets up a chance.
00:33:17He's got to get back on the jab.
00:33:27You got him hurt,
00:33:28but keep him hurt
00:33:28with the jab.
00:33:30Another minute to go
00:33:31in the round.
00:33:31Coley still wobbling,
00:33:33but now De La Oya
00:33:34begins to rein in his offense
00:33:37after throwing a flurry of punches.
00:33:39Left hook to the body.
00:33:39Drives Coley back.
00:33:40Now Coley drives De La Oya
00:33:42into the ropes.
00:33:43Well, this is what Oscar wants.
00:33:44He want a mismatch.
00:33:46Toe-toe fight.
00:33:47He's got the power.
00:33:48He's got the knockouts.
00:33:49Let it be.
00:33:53Tremendous give-and-take round.
00:33:59De La Oya again lands the left hook,
00:34:01and Coley in trouble again.
00:34:10Tremendous excitement
00:34:11in Madison Square Garden.
00:34:12Oscar De La Oya
00:34:13was in big trouble
00:34:14in the first half of this round
00:34:16and has come back
00:34:17to dominate the second half
00:34:19of the round.
00:34:21Coley's got his right hand down.
00:34:23Oscar is the left hooker.
00:34:25You want to pick your right hand
00:34:26up and back away.
00:34:27And De La Oya
00:34:31not only survives,
00:34:33but crockers
00:34:34in a round in which he appeared
00:34:36to be in severe trouble.
00:34:38and he neverört.
00:34:46Come on.
00:34:47Youfeded.
00:34:48Come on, come on.
00:34:49Come on.
00:34:49You all right?
00:34:51Come on, Jambri.
00:34:52Rene.
00:34:52You made it.
00:34:54Get his best shot, baby.
00:34:55He has nothing.
00:34:58in almost a replay of that magnificent fight last week between Morales and Barrera Coley in the
00:35:19fourth round stands and fires spends himself his out of bullets and here comes Delano
00:35:28De La Hoya with his guns
00:35:34Reminiscent of the fifth round a week ago between Morales and Barrera reminiscent of the famed 10th round of Bo Holyfield won November 13, 1992 in Las Vegas
00:35:43One of those classic see-saw rounds Coley still doesn't have his legs as De La Hoya begins the attack in round 5
00:35:50That was a slip, that was a slip is right over in that corner
00:35:53Harold, how do you have it through 4?
00:35:551-0, 40-36, Oscar De La Hoya, Oscar had him seriously hurt at the end of the fourth round
00:36:01Darryl Coley boxed beautifully for three rounds, but Oscar pounded him to the body to win the first three
00:36:05Darryl tried to fight Oscar's fight, did very well, but Oscar seriously hurt him
00:36:09I have it three rounds to one, I gave the third round to Coley
00:36:13And the crowd begins to settle back into their seats after the excitement of round 4
00:36:23That's what happened when you are pretty aggressive, but most of your punching is going to the other guy's body
00:36:29He may open up on you here and there, but hey, it's gonna take a lot out of him also
00:36:33That's why the body punches are so important
00:36:35Now Oscar's got to get out of his mind what happened in the last round
00:36:51You have to concentrate on this round
00:36:53Do it all over again
00:36:57Set it up with a jab
00:36:59Right hand, get that hook back
00:37:05When Oscar brings his jab and his left hook to the body, he dominates the flow of the fight
00:37:09When he stops throwing punches and coasts, he gives Coley a chance
00:37:13And Coley has been landing with some lead right hands
00:37:19And with the jab
00:37:21Coley's right hand is almost equal with his left hand as far as down to his waist
00:37:25It was low originally, but he seemed to get it even lower now
00:37:29It's those body punches
00:37:31No question
00:37:33The body punches changed Coley's stance and his approach in there
00:37:37There's a solid left hook by Delaware
00:37:39In close
00:37:41At this point Oscar's better concentrate on, hey, this may be a decision
00:37:45This guy has been abused before
00:37:47And he wakes up and he may take an abuse for 12th round
00:37:51Coley has a questionable tip
00:37:53He was down three times against a fighter named Diggs
00:37:57He was knocked out
00:37:59By Pat Coleman of San Diego
00:38:03And that result was eventually voided
00:38:05Because Coleman failed a drug test
00:38:07So Daryl Coley has tasted the canvas in his career
00:38:11Daryl Coley has been down
00:38:13Against lesser opponents early in his career
00:38:17But not out
00:38:19He's never been down at 147
00:38:21Excuse me, Ike Forte put him down
00:38:23And there was a kind of a half knockdown by Pernell Whittaker
00:38:27He's sitting with your right hand
00:38:43But you've got to make sure you finish with the left hand on the top
00:38:45You have to use the jabs more
00:38:49You have to use the jabs more
00:38:51You have to use the jabs more
00:38:53Start with your jab
00:38:55You have to use it more often
00:38:57It's out
00:38:59You are not doing anything
00:39:01You can ok
00:39:03Come on back
00:39:05I am trying to get that water up
00:39:08He almost slipped when he first caught the round
00:39:11He almost slipped when he was around
00:39:13Look, hey, he came to the table man
00:39:15You allowed things to happen
00:39:17You can see it on my right there.
00:39:19You can see it on my right there.
00:39:22Let's check it out!
00:39:24I thought I heard Darryl Coley say to his corner
00:39:29that he was having trouble seeing out of his right eye.
00:39:33That's the eye that has been in the way of Delahoya's hook.
00:39:38And there is swelling to the outside of Coley's right eye
00:39:41as round six arrives.
00:39:43This is the round in which Coley swore to us
00:39:46that he would knock Delahoya out,
00:39:48saying that he had a repeated dream,
00:39:50a frequent dream in which he saw himself
00:39:52knocking Delahoya out with a multitude of blows
00:39:55in this very round.
00:40:00He said he couldn't see out of one of his eyes.
00:40:03I wanted to tell him, welcome to boxing.
00:40:09A lot of us have to say, I can't see, period.
00:40:13You mean it's not unusual during a fight,
00:40:16even for a short period of time,
00:40:18to have blurred vision toward it?
00:40:20Oh, yeah, especially if someone hit you with the end of a hook
00:40:22or stiff jab right on the eye.
00:40:24I mean, it could be two or three rounds
00:40:26before you can stop seeing triples.
00:40:28Darryl Coley hasn't gone to the Delahoya body much.
00:40:34He tried it a couple of times moments ago.
00:40:37By and large, Coley pawing and trying to size up an opportunity
00:40:42in a round in which Delahoya remains the aggressor
00:40:44and keeps going to the body.
00:40:46This is when you start to hurt those thumbs.
00:40:52The guy goes back to the corner. Thumbs are broken.
00:40:56When you get those shots and they go right to the elbow.
00:41:05Coley with a free shot at Delahoya's body.
00:41:07Delahoya pops him back with a jab.
00:41:11When Oscar flurries to the body,
00:41:14Coley's hands come down very low.
00:41:17Perfect! Let him go. Step back.
00:41:21Sooner or later, you expect to see Delahoya faint to the body
00:41:24and fire the left hook upstairs.
00:41:26Yeah, it's gonna happen with a soft right hand.
00:41:28Coley has just zeroed in on Oscar's right hand,
00:41:31so he can save on that power stuff.
00:41:33He's kind of thinking a few times there.
00:41:35As you said, do a little thinking.
00:41:40This is exactly what is needed, fainting.
00:41:43One of the things Roy Jones does so well,
00:41:48it sets him apart as a fighter.
00:41:50His ability to face the opponents into bad position.
00:41:53Roy Jones got the best balance in any sport I've ever seen.
00:41:57Balance. Always on balance.
00:42:00Coley with a lead right hand.
00:42:04Coley is now playing run and hit.
00:42:07He's really not trying to engage.
00:42:10He's trying to move away.
00:42:11Occasionally jumping.
00:42:12Ooh!
00:42:13Oh, Art left hook!
00:42:15Coley took that one pretty well,
00:42:17but Delahoya thinks he's got him again.
00:42:26Back to the body goes Oscar.
00:42:28Daryl Fuller will make it out of round six,
00:42:30but he's taking a lot of punishment to do so.
00:42:40Keep working with that jab.
00:42:42Keep using that jab first.
00:42:44That's the way to do it.
00:42:45You only use the first part.
00:42:47You only use the first part.
00:42:48He set the hook up.
00:42:49He get you cutting this off so he can come here.
00:42:50He's looking for that wide left hook.
00:42:51Now, we work with them hooks and hard hooks you don't miss.
00:42:54Then you're not putting nothing together, champ.
00:42:55Now, let's more.
00:42:56This is round seven coming.
00:42:57Okay, baby?
00:42:58Now we're going to put them together, right?
00:42:59Are we?
00:43:00We're going to put them together, right?
00:43:01Right?
00:43:02For your jab.
00:43:03He's on the bottom of the week.
00:43:04You got to come up.
00:43:05Take a step back and fire your left hand, your right.
00:43:06Left jab, right hand, okay?
00:43:07Bring that hook back.
00:43:08Delahoya has been right with his left all night long,
00:43:10although Coley trying to keep his right hand up to neutralize it.
00:43:12It's quicker, sharper than he has expected.
00:43:16You saw the hint of blood around Darryl Coley's right eye.
00:43:17There's no obvious blood flow in the ring yet, but what you saw on the towel there indicates
00:43:44Indicates maybe there's a trace of blood around the right eye.
00:43:47De La Hoya landed that big left hook, George,
00:43:50by feinting to the body and then firing upstairs.
00:43:52You're going to have to do something with a pro like Coley.
00:43:54He's a pro.
00:43:56There's a good right hand up underneath by Oscar De La Hoya,
00:44:00and he leads with the right hand.
00:44:01Coley tries to counter back with the right.
00:44:05Now there's that stiff jab.
00:44:07Oscar gets up on the back of his right foot.
00:44:10He sort of just pitches it in there.
00:44:11Oscar taking Coley's right hand
00:44:14as though he now believes he can handle Daryl's power.
00:44:31Whenever Coley decides to stand up a little bit,
00:44:34Oscar just sticks that jab in like a ramming stick.
00:44:38He believes in it. It's like a weapon.
00:44:46He holds it out there.
00:44:50And the right eye is swelling rapidly now for Coley.
00:44:53You can see that it's really beginning to close here.
00:44:56That could alter as well.
00:44:57And Coley is blowing his nose,
00:44:59which is the reason why it's swelling so fast.
00:45:01Don't break the rule. Don't blow your nose.
00:45:04That's a really bad eye.
00:45:06It's going to close if this fight goes another round or two.
00:45:11Oscar's not going to have any mercy anymore,
00:45:13so it may be up to his corner.
00:45:14Coley's corner to the side.
00:45:15That right eye of Coley is a bad way to face up
00:45:21against Oscar De La Hoya's vicious left hook.
00:45:24And De La Hoya doubles up with the left.
00:45:26That was a time when De La Hoya would look to the referee
00:45:28and say, stop this, but not anymore.
00:45:30This guy has changed.
00:45:32Well, if he listened to what Coley had to say about him
00:45:35in the past few weeks,
00:45:36he probably doesn't like him very much.
00:45:38Coley said to us, I hate him.
00:45:40I'm sick of him.
00:45:41I'm sick of his status, his money.
00:45:43I'm sick of all the celebration about him.
00:45:46He's going to be sicker about him
00:45:47if De La Hoya goes ahead and finishes
00:45:49what looks like a good start for the TKO.
00:45:52He's doing it all with a left hook.
00:45:54He jabs, jabs, and then double up,
00:45:57triple up on the left hooks.
00:45:58The right hand is in jail tonight.
00:46:01Coley is just weaving right away from him.
00:46:04And now his nose is bleeding.
00:46:07And he really doesn't want to stand in there
00:46:11and trade with De La Hoya.
00:46:13He's taking one shot at a time.
00:46:16Oh, and the body shots put Coley down.
00:46:20Two vicious body shots, one with each hand.
00:46:25Referee Wayne Kelly looking in on Coley.
00:46:29He doesn't want it.
00:46:30He doesn't want any more.
00:46:32And Oscar De La Hoya makes good on his foul.
00:46:35I'm going to be a destroyer, he said,
00:46:38and a destroyer he was.
00:46:39I think he'll be very pleased
00:46:44with the way he has jump-started the rest of his career.
00:46:50He wasn't fighting King Kong.
00:46:54He wasn't fighting one of the best men in the division,
00:46:57but he was fighting a pretty good professional, George.
00:47:01And he hammered out a very professional victory
00:47:05to break him down the way he did.
00:47:08Hammered it out.
00:47:09Exactly.
00:47:10Hammered it out.
00:47:10Talk about imposing your will on another fighter.
00:47:13I mean, the minute...
00:47:14He's a good fighter today.
00:47:15The minute De La Hoya landed that last body combination,
00:47:18you could see in Coley's face that he had plenty.
00:47:20And it wasn't that particular body shot that did it.
00:47:23It was all-night body.
00:47:24The accumulation.
00:47:25Well, you talk about his jab,
00:47:26and I agree with you that he has a terrific jab.
00:47:28There are others.
00:47:29Of course, Ike Quartey has a great jab,
00:47:31and there are several others that you might consider.
00:47:34But I think it's his...
00:47:35Quartey delivers his almost to the side,
00:47:37a genuine hard slap.
00:47:40Oscar turns his things over like a ram.
00:47:43And I think it's his left hook that sets him apart.
00:47:45Amen.
00:47:46Amen.
00:47:47Let's take another look.
00:47:48And as George said,
00:47:51it was an accumulation of blows,
00:47:53but that last left hook to the body
00:47:54sapped Coley of his remaining will
00:47:57and induced him to stay on his knee
00:48:00as referee Wayne Kelly counted him out.
00:48:02Make no mistake,
00:48:04Coley could have gotten up here
00:48:05if he had felt that he had a legitimate shot
00:48:07at winning the fight.
00:48:08But he didn't.
00:48:09It was wise.
00:48:10Sometimes you don't want to tell your coroner,
00:48:12hey, can you make them stop the fight?
00:48:14So in the past couple of years,
00:48:16we've seen Roy Jones knock out Virgil Hill
00:48:18with a body shot.
00:48:19We've seen Felix Trinidad
00:48:21knock out Hugo Pineda with a body shot.
00:48:23And now we have seen Oscar De La Hoya
00:48:25knock out Darryl Coley with body shots.
00:48:28You no longer have to hear about
00:48:29the fighters of yesterday
00:48:31are better than the fighters today.
00:48:33We are seeing some of the best stuff
00:48:34we've ever seen with body punches.
00:48:36Hey, and the reviews on Robert Alcazar
00:48:39as the head trainer without help,
00:48:41pretty doggone good, huh?
00:48:43Pretty good.
00:48:43You can't stop that.
00:48:46Oscar was vicious.
00:48:48There was one moment of trouble
00:48:50in round four
00:48:51when Coley landed two punches up the middle
00:48:54and seemed for a moment
00:48:55to have Deloitte in trouble.
00:48:56But Oscar reversed that almost immediately
00:48:59and pounded out the TK,
00:49:01or the knockout victory, I should say.
00:49:02Let's go up to Michael Buffer
00:49:04for the official particulars.
00:49:07Ladies and gentlemen,
00:49:09referee Wayne Kelly
00:49:10reaches the count of ten
00:49:12in round number seven,
00:49:14the official time,
00:49:16exactly three minutes
00:49:17of round number seven.
00:49:20The winner,
00:49:21and now a five-time world champion
00:49:23from East Los Angeles,
00:49:26the golden boy,
00:49:27Oscar De La Hoya!
00:49:29one more look.
00:49:59I want to see a left hook to the body that counts.
00:50:02One of several dozen that Oscar De La Hoya applied to Darryl Coley's ribcage
00:50:07in this very professional performance
00:50:11coming off the first loss of his career against Felix Trinidad.
00:50:18There's a writer in New York who persistently refers to De La Hoya as Chicken De La Hoya.
00:50:24That line won't fit tomorrow.
00:50:25No, but I'm looking at a green-eyed monster out there, Sugar Shane Mosley.
00:50:31Sugar Shane Mosley was watching from close range.
00:50:34He's about the most dangerous thing I've seen in the welterweights in a long time.
00:50:37Mosley may get a chance.
00:50:38As you look at the total punches in the final punch stat,
00:50:41De La Hoya landing 106 blows more than Coley,
00:50:44throwing 23 more, more than doubling Coley's connect percentage.
00:50:48De La Hoya's connect percentage rose in the last few rounds
00:50:51as he came up to that fairly astronomical number, 54%.
00:50:56Power punches, and so many of these are, first of all, we'll take a look at jabs.
00:51:02De La Hoya landing more than half at 66 out of 112.
00:51:05He built the tempo on that as the fight went on.
00:51:08Coley, 33 out of 192 as he tried to stay at range for the most part.
00:51:14And power punches, so many of these were thrown to the body.
00:51:19The real story of the fight, De La Hoya mixing in the left hook to the body
00:51:23so frequently among those 117 landed power shots.
00:51:28And now let's go to Larry Merchant with Oscar De La Hoya.
00:51:31Thank you, Jim.
00:51:33Congratulations, Oscar.
00:51:34What pleases you most about this fight?
00:51:36Oh, that I took my time, that I was very patient.
00:51:42Coley was boxing a lot, so I had to work the body.
00:51:45I had to cut off the ring the way a complete fighter cuts off a ring, not chase him.
00:51:50So it helped out a lot.
00:51:52We worked hard in the gym, and I'm very pleased with my performance.
00:51:55Do you feel you achieved your goal of dominating the fight,
00:51:59not letting the other fighter determine how you fight him?
00:52:03Well, that's the way I set my goals for the year 2000,
00:52:07is to have four fights, four knockouts.
00:52:09And I said that Darryl Coley would be the first one.
00:52:12No disrespect to anybody, but that's my mentality for this year.
00:52:15I'm going to work twice as hard for the next fight and even harder for the next one.
00:52:19The body shots did it for you?
00:52:21I think so.
00:52:22I was wearing them down to the body.
00:52:24I was throwing right hands to the body and coming back with the left hook to the body.
00:52:27So I felt very strong.
00:52:28I was closing my fists, finally, for the first time.
00:52:31I felt very solid, so the punch was landing strong.
00:52:34Why do you mean for the first time?
00:52:36Well, because all the time when I used to box,
00:52:38I used to have my hands open and try to use speed, you know?
00:52:41And now, with having your fist very tight, you feel strong.
00:52:46What did he say to you at the end when he whispered something in your ear?
00:52:49He just told me, great fighter, and I respect that.
00:52:51All right, now let's look ahead.
00:52:55From what we understand, there have been discussions about rematch with Felix Trinidad,
00:53:02providing he wins next week.
00:53:05Some discrepancy.
00:53:07According to his father, they don't want to fight below 152.
00:53:12Your father wants you to stay at 147, doesn't want you to come up over 150.
00:53:17Do you think you're going to be able to settle that?
00:53:20Well, we'll sit down next week and discuss it.
00:53:22We will come out with a settlement, definitely.
00:53:24I mean, this is boxing, and we do have to fight four times.
00:53:27I'm not going to wait for anybody.
00:53:29I'm going to feel very strong at 147.
00:53:31But if it takes going up one pound or two, maybe I'll give him slack.
00:53:34But depending on what I feel, depending on my weight, because I feel very strong at this weight class, it's no problem.
00:53:41We just have to discuss it.
00:53:43There have also been discussions that if he should lose next week or if Trinidad should be hurt and couldn't fight in June,
00:53:50that you would fight Shane Mosley.
00:53:52Where do you lean?
00:53:54Do you want the rematch more badly and to go there first and maybe Mosley later, or vice versa?
00:54:00As long as I have the two of them for this year, I wouldn't have no problem in what order they come in.
00:54:07I'll be ready, definitely, 100%.
00:54:09Shane Mosley, he's a very quick fighter.
00:54:13A lot of respect for everybody who I'll be fighting this year.
00:54:15But up in this ring, I'm going to go in there and try to get the knockout.
00:54:20Thank you very much, Oscar.
00:54:21Good fight.
00:54:22And finally, this is a pretty good night at the fights.
00:54:28Better than some, maybe not as good as a few others, and certainly not as transcendent as last week in that memorable fight between Barrera and Morales.
00:54:40James Elwood, the novelist who wrote such books as L.A. Confidential and Black Dahlia and others,
00:54:48told me that he was sitting ringside next to a Mexican-American with a big fat roll of $100 bills
00:54:57who was betting everybody around him last week on Morales.
00:55:01He took Morales and got so excited by that fight that when all the people came over to hand him
00:55:09the money that they had lost, he refused to take it because he didn't want to taint the purity of that experience.
00:55:20Never heard a story like that.
00:55:22Maybe never will again.
00:55:23But we can hope.
00:55:27Jim?
00:55:28All right.
00:55:29Thank you very much, Larry Merchant.
00:55:31And so, after last week's excitement, we get excitement here in Delahoya's comeback performance.
00:55:37Now let's hope for more excitement as the big year in boxing continues.
00:55:41On April 29, here in Madison Square Garden, another heavyweight unification championship fight
00:55:47as Lennox Lewis will put his three world championship belts on the line against Michael Grant
00:55:53in what I like to call the first post-modern heavyweight championship fight.
00:55:58246 pounds, all muscle, against 250 pounds, all muscle.
00:56:03It has not happened in the division before.
00:56:05And, Michael, first of all, let's give a little credit where credit is due
00:56:09because Lennox becomes the first heavyweight champion in my memory to win the people's championship
00:56:14and immediately turn around and negotiate a fight against the challenger that most ring experts regard
00:56:19as the toughest guy out there.
00:56:21That's you.
00:56:22Are you surprised to be getting this chance this soon?
00:56:24Absolutely.
00:56:25I think it is a surprise and, in another sense, a blessing.
00:56:28I give Lennox a credit and my God the honor.
00:56:31So definitely a surprise.
00:56:33And a great opportunity for Grant.
00:56:34So, Lennox, why?
00:56:36I mean, the conventional wisdom is you make a little money first
00:56:39and then go to try to fight the toughest guy.
00:56:41But you're fighting the guy that most of us ringsiders believe is the toughest contender right away.
00:56:47Why?
00:56:47I want the best straightaway.
00:56:48I want to stay at a certain level.
00:56:50It's pretty soon that I'm going to be retiring.
00:56:52So I want to go against the best heavyweights out there.
00:56:55Michael Grant showed me a lot of heart in his last fight against Galata.
00:56:58And he also has my same boxing style.
00:57:01So it's going to be a good matchup between me and him.
00:57:03It isn't because he's relatively inexperienced, still learning the sport,
00:57:07and will get better as he goes along?
00:57:09I think he's taken a big chance fighting me.
00:57:14But, you know, what can I say?
00:57:16I'm on this field.
00:57:16I can only fight one person at a time.
00:57:18So now it's his turn.
00:57:20So I'll see what he can make of it.
00:57:21Lennox, in both of your fights against Evander Holyfield last year,
00:57:25you used what I call your relatively cautious, counter-punching style.
00:57:30It's the style that fight fans saw you winning with but did not necessarily admire.
00:57:34Now, your trainer, Emmanuel Stewart, says to me that against a bigger guy like Grant,
00:57:39you'll have to attack.
00:57:40Will you be an entirely different fighter against Michael?
00:57:43I'm a boxer that can do anything.
00:57:45You know, styles make fights.
00:57:46I've got an arsenal filled with punches I can throw in to give a moment.
00:57:49It's just a problem for me that I just have to solve.
00:57:52But isn't it logical, Michael, that Lennox, who knocked out Andrew Gulotta in a minute
00:57:57and 17 seconds, is going to come out and try to attack against you,
00:58:01who got knocked down in the first round by Andrew Gulotta?
00:58:05Well, I'm not going to describe how Lennox is going to come out,
00:58:08but I assume that he's going to be in the best shape and the best condition of his fighting career.
00:58:13Fighting a guy of my stature, fighting a guy with my qualities, fighting a guy with my talent.
00:58:17I think that he also is going to try to prove to the world that he is the best heavyweight.
00:58:22But then again, until they step in the ring April 29th, and that there's someone else out there for him.
00:58:26Did that knock down in the first round against Gulotta damage your confidence?
00:58:29Oh, definitely not. Definitely not.
00:58:31Everything was a tremendous uplift for me.
00:58:33And, hey, I give credit to my almighty because he kept me in and I stayed humble.
00:58:38Well, indeed.
00:58:38And you came back in the last round of the fight, as you'll see here, to knock Gulotta down
00:58:43and eventually out when he elected not to continue in the fight.
00:58:46But Lennox has already given you credit for showing heart.
00:58:49Were there also some skills that brought you back from difficulty in that fight?
00:58:53Absolutely.
00:58:54I mean, I just sustain with, you know, being humble.
00:58:56Being humble carried me a long way.
00:58:58And, you know, it leaves windows open for me, for me not to just quit and everything.
00:59:03It's not in me.
00:59:04So, therefore, when Gulotta had knocked me down, it made me more hungry.
00:59:09You know, the desire to win, the will to win.
00:59:11And I just wanted to stay focused and go out and do the best that I can do.
00:59:13Kind of hard to imagine these 496 pounds of fighter going 12 full rounds against each other.
00:59:20Somebody has to go, right?
00:59:22So what kind of a fight do you expect it to be, Lennox?
00:59:24I think it's going to be a good, interesting fight.
00:59:27Michael Grant has never seen a boxer like me.
00:59:29So it's going to be a shock for him when I step into the ring with him.
00:59:32So we're going to see on April 29th how the fight's going to turn out.
00:59:35Is your trainer, Emanuel Stewart, correct in assessing that against bigger fighters, you have to be more aggressive?
00:59:42Against bigger fighters, I always show that I'm aggressive.
00:59:44So if you look over history, you'll see what happens.
00:59:48All right.
00:59:48I'll give you the last word.
00:59:49What kind of fight do you expect it to be?
00:59:52I expect two heavyweights, clean cut, come out there and do the best that they can do.
00:59:56And hopefully give the world what they want.
00:59:58And we live the fight another day.
01:00:00But also, I look to walk away with the titles.
01:00:02Two gentlemen sportsmen who show each other mutual respect.
01:00:06And in doing so, show honor for their sport.
01:00:09Michael Grant on this side.
01:00:11Lennox Lewis on this side.
01:00:13We'll see them together here in Madison Square Garden live on pay-per-view April 29th.
01:00:18Don't miss it.
01:00:19We'll have a final word on what happened here in boxing tonight in just a few moments.
01:00:24Meanwhile, we asked you this question on the website.
01:00:27Will Oscar De La Hoya rise back to the top of the welterweight division?
01:00:31And here's how you voted as the evening went along.
01:00:3473% of you saying yes, 26% of you saying no.
01:00:38I guess 1% had no opinion.
01:00:39But overwhelmingly, you vote for the notion that De La Hoya will rise back to the top of the welterweight division.
01:00:46And of course, his performance here tonight did nothing to dispel that notion.
01:00:51Final word on what happened here in Madison Square Garden in a moment.
01:00:53Right now, let's look ahead to some upcoming shows on HBO.
01:00:56Next Saturday on HBO, the clock is ticking as Clint Eastwood sets out to prove a doomed man's innocence.

01:02:38Tonight, you saw two exciting fights in Madison Square Garden.
01:02:41Arturo Gotti continued on the comeback trail with a devastating second-round knockout of Joey Gamache.
01:02:47Gotti almost got a first-round KO as he floored Gamache twice in the first and flirted with a third knockdown.
01:02:53Then, deposited Gamache on the canvas early in the second round.
01:02:58No count was necessary.
01:03:00And then Oscar De La Hoya beat a solid tattoo on the ribcage of Daryl Coley for six rounds with a sustained body attack.
01:03:09Until finally, in the seventh round, Coley went to his seat after a left hook to the ribcage and decided not to get up.
01:03:18Knockout victory on the body shot for De La Hoya.
