00:02:11Tonight on HBO's Boxing After Dark,
00:02:40you'll see comebacking Andrew Gulotta,
00:02:42hoping to again become a part of the heavyweight title picture,
00:02:45facing journeyman last-second throw-in Jesse Ferguson.
00:02:49Then, undefeated 26-year-old Michael Grant
00:02:51attempts to continue his rise up the heavyweight rank,
00:02:55taking on Syrian-born former sparring partner Ahmad Abdin.
00:02:59We're back in Atlantic City for a wintry night of boxing.
00:03:02The convention center ballroom filling with fans
00:03:04looking for possible contenders for the heavyweight throw.
00:03:07The king, of course, will be crowned next month
00:03:10when there's a winner in the unification bout
00:03:12between Holyfield and Lewis.
00:03:14A winner.
00:03:15And how is that to take place?
00:03:17Via a punch, we hope.
00:03:19Future contenders for the title, well,
00:03:21why not the winners in tonight's two bouts
00:03:24on Boxing After Dark?
00:03:26Hello again, everybody.
00:03:27I'm Jim Lampley.
00:03:28We welcome you to this all-heavyweight edition
00:03:30of the traditionally explosive Boxing After Dark series.
00:03:34Later tonight, in the second of our two main events,
00:03:36you'll see Michael Grant unanimously crowned
00:03:38as the next big thing in the heavyweight division
00:03:40as he takes on former sparring partner Ahmad Abdin.
00:03:44Grant coming off a layoff of several months
00:03:46occasioned by a bout with a hepatitis A infection.
00:03:50But before that, Andrew Gulotta,
00:03:52the mystery man of the heavyweight division,
00:03:54will be fighting against Jesse Ferguson,
00:03:56who was named as the opponent to replace
00:03:58the now-injured Jimmy Thunder just two days ago.
00:04:02working with me, as always, on Boxing After Dark,
00:04:05light heavyweight champion of the world,
00:04:07many people's choice as the best fighter in the sport,
00:04:09Roy Jones Jr. and Roy.
00:04:11Michael Grant is so unanimously regarded
00:04:15by boxing media, magazines, reporters, etc.,
00:04:18as the eventual successor to the heavyweight title,
00:04:22the man who follows the winner
00:04:23of the Lewis vs. Holyfield bout,
00:04:25that he's almost been pre-crowned in that regard.
00:04:28Is he, in effect, all that?
00:04:30Yes, I think he is, Jim.
00:04:31I think he's all that and some.
00:04:33I think Michael Grant has a perfect physique.
00:04:35He has the heart.
00:04:36And the biggest thing is that his experience
00:04:38came from fighting professionally,
00:04:41not from the amateur ranks,
00:04:43not doing something that's semi-professional,
00:04:45but came from actual fights in the ring
00:04:47as a professional fighter.
00:04:48That's the best place to learn to fight,
00:04:50and I think he's a well-rounded guy
00:04:52to be in the position that he's in.
00:04:54He's also been remarkably composed and collected
00:04:56in his career up to this point.
00:04:58Quite a contrast to the other man
00:05:00you'll be seeing tonight.
00:05:02The twilight zone of heavyweight contenders,
00:05:04Andrew Gulotta.
00:05:05It started in July of 1996
00:05:08when Gulotta burst on the scene
00:05:10in his first bout
00:05:11against heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe.
00:05:13Gulotta was ahead on points,
00:05:17dominating the bout on all three judges' scorecards,
00:05:19despite two deductions already for low blows
00:05:21when he was disqualified in the seventh round.
00:05:24The ensuing riot gave the sport a black eye,
00:05:28and there were more black eyes five months later
00:05:31when they met again in Atlantic City.
00:05:32A wild, roughhouse brawl.
00:05:34Again, Gulotta was leading on all three scorecards,
00:05:37despite point deductions for low blows.
00:05:39Again, he couldn't stop himself
00:05:40and was disqualified in the ninth round.
00:05:43Got a chance for redemption ten months later
00:05:45against Lennox Lewis here in Atlantic City,
00:05:47but it was bizarre.
00:05:49He showed up an hour and a half late
00:05:51to the arena before the fight
00:05:52and then froze in the first round
00:05:54and was pounded into oblivion by Lewis.
00:05:59So the first loss of his career
00:06:01by some process other than disqualification
00:06:04took place here in Atlantic City.
00:06:05Since that time, he has been winning
00:06:08as he tries them out a comeback to contender status.
00:06:11Here to talk more about Andrew Gulotta,
00:06:13HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Merchant.
00:06:15And Larry, there's never been any doubt
00:06:17since July of 96 when he had his first fight
00:06:20against Bo about Gulotta's ability
00:06:22and his possible impact on the division.
00:06:24What we wonder about is,
00:06:26will he ever escape his cocoon of self-destruction?
00:06:29Jim, it's something we all wonder
00:06:31whether or not he's going to stop
00:06:33throwing those banana cream pies
00:06:35into his own face.
00:06:38It is a puzzlement.
00:06:39To give him credit, in his most recent fights,
00:06:42none of them big, high-pressure fights,
00:06:45he has shown a more measured, controlled style.
00:06:49However, two days ago, Thursday,
00:06:52when he learned that Jesse Ferguson
00:06:54would substitute for the injured Jimmy Thunder,
00:06:57he went to his room, locked the door, and wept.
00:07:02His wife, who is a lawyer in Chicago,
00:07:04explained that he felt that it was a sign of disrespect
00:07:08that they would bring in a replacement
00:07:10that late in the going.
00:07:12She also had to finally convince him
00:07:15that it would be a terrible career move
00:07:18for him not to come out of the room and fight.
00:07:21Freaking out for Jesse Ferguson,
00:07:24maybe that's why he's called the boogeyman.
00:07:27Well, Jesse ought to be awfully flattered.
00:07:29They say Gulotta was locked in that room
00:07:31for more than an hour, right?
00:07:32And the cynic would say he's the first man
00:07:35ever to take as much as an hour
00:07:37to decide whether to fight Jesse the boogeyman Ferguson.
00:07:40But we'll see.
00:07:41Maybe Gulotta knows more than the rest of us
00:07:43as we get ready for this heavyweight bout,
00:07:45which could have a critical effect
00:07:47on Gulotta's eventual chances
00:07:49of rising back to contender status.
00:07:51And Andrew's Polish-American following
00:07:55is hugely in evidence here in the arena tonight.
00:07:58Once again, as has always been the case,
00:08:00when we cover him, there are red and white flags,
00:08:04red and white costumes all over the arena
00:08:07in tribute to his Polish,
00:08:10now Polish-American heritage.
00:08:13You know, another explanation,
00:08:15reading between the lines,
00:08:17for his inability to take a late substitute
00:08:21in a professional way the other night
00:08:23was that he really came here
00:08:26expecting to put on a show
00:08:29to look great against a fighter
00:08:32who seemed designed to help him look great,
00:08:35Thunder,
00:08:35and that he was distraught
00:08:37that he would fight somebody
00:08:39he hadn't prepared for
00:08:40and who might be hard to look good against.
00:08:43Well, and there are no shortage of critics,
00:08:45Roy Jones,
00:08:45who believe that Ferguson
00:08:47is a likely tougher opponent
00:08:49than Thunder would have been.
00:08:50Yeah, because Ferguson has been known
00:08:51as being an upset king in the sport of boxing.
00:08:54You know that's his self.
00:08:57So here's a look at Galata
00:08:58and a closer look at his background.
00:09:00You see that 10 years ago,
00:09:03he was a bronze medalist in the Olympics.
00:09:06He's lost only to champions,
00:09:084-0 in his comeback.
00:09:10And across the ring,
00:09:13the boogeyman who's had 17 losses,
00:09:16seven of them by knockout.
00:09:17Jesse has been knocked out
00:09:19by some of the biggest punchers
00:09:20in the heavyweight division,
00:09:21including Riddick Bowe
00:09:23and Mike Tyson years ago.
00:09:26He's fought a total of 10 heavyweights
00:09:27who held titles.
00:09:28Well, he was stopped by Bowe
00:09:30in his only title fight,
00:09:32fought 10 other heavyweights
00:09:34who had held titles
00:09:35once or one time or another,
00:09:37beat Buster Douglas 13 years ago,
00:09:39also beat Ray Mercer in a famous upset.
00:09:43And for a couple of years,
00:09:44he took off from competitive boxing
00:09:46to spar with Mike Tyson,
00:09:48and that proved profitable for him.
00:09:50He says he got the call
00:09:52a couple of days ago for this fight.
00:09:54He was in gym shape.
00:09:55That doesn't necessarily mean
00:09:57that he's in fighting shape.
00:09:59Tale of the tape
00:09:59between Galata and Ferguson
00:10:01and Jesse weighed in at 238,
00:10:04just, well, 239,
00:10:06a pound over Galata.
00:10:07Were he in fighting shape,
00:10:08he might have been just a few pounds
00:10:10south of there.
00:10:11You see the 10-year age advantage
00:10:12for Galata
00:10:13and the 6-inch reach advantage.
00:10:15Rules of the bout
00:10:15with our unofficial ringside scorer,
00:10:17Harold Ledema.
00:10:18Andrew Galata and Jesse Ferguson
00:10:20will fight tonight
00:10:20under the rules
00:10:21of the New Jersey Athletic Control Board.
00:10:23And it is the case, you know,
00:10:25and it is the case
00:10:27with any Andrew Galata fight.
00:10:28We must quickly point out
00:10:29that there is no rule
00:10:31concerning how many warnings
00:10:32referee Joe Cortez must give
00:10:33before he deducts a point.
00:10:34But if you get hit
00:10:36by a low blow
00:10:36and you get hurt,
00:10:37you have to continue
00:10:38after a reasonable amount of time
00:10:39up to five minutes
00:10:41or you lose.
00:10:42Jim, let's go up
00:10:42to ring announcer
00:10:43Michael Buffer
00:10:44for the pre-fight introductions.
00:10:49Ladies and gentlemen,
00:10:50by way of Bally's Park Place

00:11:07This first bout is presented
00:11:08in association
00:11:09with Ziggy Promotions.
00:11:11It is sanctioned
00:11:12by the New Jersey
00:11:12State Athletic Control Board
00:11:14Boxing Commissioner
00:11:15Larry Hazard Sr.
00:11:17Timekeeper at the bell
00:11:18for this contest
00:11:19is Roosevelt Gilbert.
00:11:20The three judges
00:11:21scoring this bout
00:11:22at ringside
00:11:24on a 10-point must system
00:11:26will be
00:11:26John Pottery,
00:11:28Hilton Whitaker,
00:11:30and Gene Williams.
00:11:32And when the bell rings,
00:11:33your referee in charge
00:11:35of the action,
00:11:36Joe Cortez.
00:11:38And now, ladies and gentlemen,
00:11:4010 rounds of boxing
00:11:42in the heavyweight division.
00:11:47Introducing first,
00:11:49coming out of the blue corner,
00:11:51wearing black,
00:11:52hidden with white.
00:11:53He weighs 239 pounds.
00:11:56His professional record,
00:11:5743 bouts,
00:11:5956 victories,
00:12:0116 by knockout,
00:12:02with 17 losses.
00:12:04From Philadelphia,
00:12:05Pennsylvania,
00:12:07here is the veteran heavyweight,
00:12:09Jesse
00:12:10Cooking Man Ferguson.
00:12:13And his opponent across the ring,
00:12:21fighting out of the red corner,
00:12:23wearing white,
00:12:24trimmed with red.
00:12:25He weighs 238 pounds.
00:12:28His professional record,
00:12:2932 victories,
00:12:31with 27 knockouts to his credit,
00:12:33only three defeats.
00:12:35Presenting the seventh-ranked heavyweight
00:12:38in the world,
00:12:38from Warsaw, Poland,
00:12:41Andrew Golaha.
00:12:45All right, gentlemen.
00:13:03Andrew,
00:13:04we're going to lose in the dressing room.
00:13:06I expect a good, clean fight.
00:13:10I expect good sportsman-like conduct
00:13:12from both of you.
00:13:13You understood?
00:13:16Coffee is a little high.
00:13:18Here's good.
00:13:20It's a little high.
00:13:21Here's that.
00:13:22We got it.
00:13:23All right?
00:13:25Take your hands.
00:13:26Give me good sportsman-like conduct.
00:13:27Touch him up.
00:13:27Okay.
00:13:30If you can fight
00:13:31and you're ready to fight,
00:13:33Jesse Ferguson is a good opponent.
00:13:36If you can't fight
00:13:37or you're not ready to fight,
00:13:39he's the wrong opponent.
00:13:45Interesting harbinger
00:13:47of something later to come tonight.
00:13:49You saw Joe Cortez
00:13:50talking to Jesse the Boogeyman
00:13:52about the height
00:13:53of his protective cup.
00:13:56And that's a subject
00:13:58for Grant's opponent,
00:13:59Ahmad Abdin,
00:14:00who believes that Michael Grant
00:14:01gets an unfair advantage
00:14:02in wearing that up around
00:14:04his chest in most fights.
00:14:07I guess he's coming out right now
00:14:09to let Golada know
00:14:11that he's in a fight.
00:14:12Maybe try to hurt him.
00:14:15Maybe his only chance.
00:14:18He may not be in shape
00:14:19to go a full 10-round tonight
00:14:21being that he took the fight
00:14:23on such a short notice.
00:14:25Ferguson says he had
00:14:26an inkling weeks ago
00:14:28that something might happen
00:14:29to Thunder
00:14:30and that as he trained
00:14:31in the gym
00:14:32for the past couple of weeks,
00:14:33he was keeping in the back
00:14:35of his mind
00:14:36the possibility
00:14:37of stepping up
00:14:38into this opportunity.
00:14:39I'm sure he's had
00:14:40these opportunities
00:14:41to come at him
00:14:42several times before that,
00:14:43so he knows that
00:14:44if he stays in shape,
00:14:46that he may get an opportunity.
00:14:47And if he does,
00:14:48he wants to be there
00:14:49to answer.
00:14:49And he's respected
00:14:52by matchmakers
00:14:53despite his 17 losses
00:14:55as a professional
00:14:56who will give you
00:14:57an effort.
00:14:58This despite the fact
00:14:59that many believe
00:15:00he did not make an effort
00:15:01in his two-round knockout loss
00:15:03to Riddick Bowe
00:15:04when he had a big chance
00:15:06to fight for the heavyweight title.
00:15:07Well, there were
00:15:08different circumstances.
00:15:09It's like the boogeyman
00:15:09likes to come out at night,
00:15:11but a bright light
00:15:12got shined on him
00:15:13all of a sudden
00:15:14when he came out
00:15:14to fight Riddick Bowe.
00:15:15So it kind of
00:15:16put him in shock.
00:15:17Yeah, and Riddick Bowe
00:15:18was a hell of a fighter
00:15:19at that time.
00:15:24It was the second
00:15:25of Bowe's title defenses
00:15:26after he first took
00:15:27the title from
00:15:28Evander Holyfield
00:15:29in November of 92.
00:15:30First he fought
00:15:31against Michael Dokes
00:15:32in Madison Square Garden
00:15:33and in Ferguson
00:15:35in Washington, D.C.
00:15:36Now, Golada
00:15:37throwing right hands
00:15:39over the top.
00:15:40In his victory
00:15:40over Tim Witherspoon
00:15:42a few months ago,
00:15:43Golada fought
00:15:44remarkably controlled
00:15:45boxer-like performance.
00:15:50And when Golada
00:15:51gets his jab going,
00:15:53there aren't too many
00:15:54heavyweights
00:15:55who could do anything
00:15:55about it.
00:15:57When he gets the rhythm
00:15:57on his jab,
00:15:58he's very tough
00:15:59to contend with.
00:16:00Yeah, he is.
00:16:01Mainly because he has
00:16:02such a big frame.
00:16:03He's a big heavyweight.
00:16:04He's not a little guy.
00:16:05Once he gets those
00:16:06long arms to him,
00:16:07it's hard for the shorter guys
00:16:08to get up with them.
00:16:09He's hurting,
00:16:09Jesse, right here.
00:16:10He's throwing
00:16:11some heavy shots,
00:16:13complete control,
00:16:14good short,
00:16:15hard shots
00:16:16from Golada.
00:16:18Ferguson may not
00:16:19get the kinds
00:16:19of opportunities
00:16:20he hoped for
00:16:21sneaking in here
00:16:22at the last minute.
00:16:23Golada off to a good start
00:16:25in round one
00:16:26with the jab,
00:16:27the right over the top,
00:16:28and the occasional
00:16:29left hook.
00:16:31The one punch
00:16:31he's never really learned
00:16:33to throw well
00:16:33is an uppercut.
00:16:35The young person
00:16:36can hurt Golada
00:16:36every time he throws.
00:16:37I mean, hurt the boogies
00:16:39every time he gets hit.
00:16:40It's the second time
00:16:41he staggered Ferguson
00:16:43in the round.
00:16:44This is a big, big round
00:16:45for Golada.
00:16:47A two-point round.
00:16:49And Golada keeping the pressure
00:16:51on down the stretch
00:16:52of the round.
00:16:53Ferguson seemed to expect
00:16:55him to back off
00:16:56at some point,
00:16:56but Andrew never did.
00:16:59But Andrew never did.
00:17:06Come here, ladies.
00:17:06You're hugging in the box.
00:17:07Real good, all right?
00:17:09Jab, start looking for that
00:17:10jab to hook the spot.
00:17:12Right hand,
00:17:13hook the body,
00:17:13hook the hand.
00:17:14That's that?
00:17:19You're doing good.
00:17:20And the other thing is,
00:17:21keep your left hand up.
00:17:23He's always throwing
00:17:23it to the overhand right.
00:17:25I don't want you
00:17:25on the ropes.
00:17:26Stay off of the ropes.
00:17:28All right?
00:17:29Don't wait on this guy.
00:17:31You're letting him
00:17:32get brave.
00:17:34Don't let him get brave.
00:17:35Andrew Golada seems
00:17:37to have emerged
00:17:38from his crying jag
00:17:40and the fetal position
00:17:41very, very well.
00:17:44A very strong first round.
00:17:48He's ready to fight.
00:17:50Target practice.
00:17:52Golada throwing 97 punches
00:17:54in round one.
00:17:55Heavyweight average
00:17:56is about 50 to 55.
00:17:58Golada has been active
00:18:00when he's on the beam
00:18:01in the past,
00:18:02but never at that level.
00:18:0397 punches in round one.
00:18:0551 connected
00:18:06by Andrew Golada.
00:18:07I also think he might be
00:18:12a little bit quicker
00:18:14at this weight
00:18:15down around 238
00:18:17than he was
00:18:18up in the mid-240s.
00:18:23Oh, that was a good move.
00:18:24Roy was talking about
00:18:25Golada's big frame
00:18:27and just to emphasize
00:18:29the point, Roy,
00:18:30it's not just that he's big.
00:18:31He's an athlete.
00:18:32He's quick.
00:18:32He has good foot movement.
00:18:34He's probably as gifted
00:18:36an athlete as any of the
00:18:37top big heavyweights,
00:18:39including Grant.
00:18:39Yes, he is.
00:18:41You don't see much
00:18:41fat on his body.
00:18:43He's got a bloody nose,
00:18:44incidentally,
00:18:44so Jesse did hit him.
00:18:46Yep.
00:18:46But one thing I notice here,
00:18:49he hasn't thrown a body punch
00:18:50that I can recall.
00:18:52Well, maybe that's their
00:18:53insurance against the low blows.
00:18:56You'll recall in the middle
00:18:58rounds of Bo Golada, too,
00:18:59Lou Duva yelling at him,
00:19:01don't throw a single punch
00:19:02to the body.
00:19:03But they couldn't stop him
00:19:04from delivering the low blows.
00:19:07Pressure and fatigue
00:19:08will make you do things
00:19:10you don't want to do.
00:19:12Almost launched an uppercut there.
00:19:14Pulled it back.
00:19:16Pulled it back.
00:19:27Ferguson a considerably
00:19:28sneakier and more flexible
00:19:32fighter than Jimmy Thunder.
00:19:33Thunder's essentially
00:19:34a one-note tune who comes
00:19:35in, goes straight forward,
00:19:36and hopes that his power
00:19:38will deliver something
00:19:39big for him.
00:19:40Jesse has many more
00:19:41tricks than that.
00:19:43And perhaps that's one
00:19:44of the reasons that
00:19:45Golada felt disrespect
00:19:46by the last-minute change.
00:19:48It was Golada's
00:19:50second low blow
00:19:54according to the referee.
00:19:56There was one a little
00:19:58earlier in the round.
00:20:00And look for Ferguson
00:20:01to maximize the drama
00:20:03in every one of them.
00:20:06Andrew! Andrew!
00:20:07Come on, Paul!
00:20:07Certainly one of the things
00:20:08that Jesse would have thought
00:20:09of coming in tonight
00:20:10is can he get under
00:20:11Golada's skin somehow?
00:20:12You can't win a fight on a low blow.
00:20:15I'm not trying to!
00:20:17Okay.
00:20:17You walk around.
00:20:19Walk around.
00:20:20Walk around.
00:20:20You have a little rest.
00:20:21I'm going to hit him left.
00:20:23Don't hit him back,
00:20:23but then I don't want to
00:20:24make a punch for you.
00:20:25Don't be starting to retaliate.
00:20:27Harold Letterman,
00:20:28quickly the rule.
00:20:29Jim, he's got up to five minutes,
00:20:31Jesse Ferguson.
00:20:32He can't win.
00:20:32If he doesn't continue,
00:20:33he loses by a bandit.
00:20:34He has to continue.
00:20:35I don't know.
00:20:39If I was Jesse,
00:20:40I might try one
00:20:41along the border someplace
00:20:42just to see if I can
00:20:44get him upset.
00:20:45He just told him
00:20:45I'm going to hit him back.
00:20:48The referee said,
00:20:48don't you do that.
00:20:49I'll take a point from you.
00:20:50So what?
00:20:52I would have never said
00:20:53anything to the referee about him.
00:20:54Harold Letterman lands again.
00:20:56That was a terrific
00:20:57left hook inside by Golada.
00:20:59Ferguson reeled backward,
00:21:00but now Jesse keeps
00:21:01coming forward again.
00:21:05My guess is we're not
00:21:11going to see too many
00:21:12more body punches
00:21:13from Golada.
00:21:14He doesn't need them
00:21:14in this fight.
00:21:30A low blow by Ferguson
00:21:32there,
00:21:32but it didn't really connect.
00:21:35Take a look at the
00:21:57more obvious of the
00:21:59two low blows
00:22:01that Golada landed
00:22:03in that fight.
00:22:03One thing I noticed there,
00:22:05Roy,
00:22:05was he did dip his shoulder
00:22:07and try to throw
00:22:08that punch correctly.
00:22:10No more body shots.
00:22:11No more body shots.
00:22:13That's not the way
00:22:13it wound up.
00:22:14Hit him right there.
00:22:16And you see the
00:22:17lock-sided punch
00:22:18at numbers
00:22:19through round number two.
00:22:21Keep hitting him
00:22:21with the jab.
00:22:22Golada has a scar
00:22:23on the back of his head
00:22:25that I believe
00:22:26is from the cell phone
00:22:27with which he was
00:22:28attacked in the riot
00:22:29back on July 11, 1996.
00:22:32Round three of the
00:22:48scheduled ten.
00:22:51Second fight tonight
00:22:52is scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:22:54Grant against Abdeen.
00:22:55I can't say that I've seen
00:23:09Golada show this much
00:23:10poise in a long time.
00:23:13He seems to be well under
00:23:14control of everything he's doing.
00:23:15similar to the control
00:23:21he showed in his
00:23:22route-going performance
00:23:23against Witherspoon
00:23:25in Warsaw,
00:23:27October 2.
00:23:30Hard right hand
00:23:31lands for Golada.
00:23:32Harrison backing up.
00:23:35Andrew trying here
00:23:36to join Carl Williams,
00:23:38Mike Tyson,
00:23:39Bruce Seldon,
00:23:39Riddick Bowe,
00:23:40Frank Bruno,
00:23:41Jeremy Williams,
00:23:42and Danell Nicholson
00:23:44among heavyweights
00:23:45to have knocked
00:23:45Jesse Ferguson out.
00:23:48Almost all of them
00:23:49pretty good bunches.
00:24:04Jesse with a swelling mark
00:24:07around the right eye
00:24:09where some of the left hooks
00:24:12have done damage.
00:24:17Ferguson's last fight
00:24:19was an upset
00:24:19of Obed Sullivan,
00:24:21once a top ten fighter.
00:24:24So he's
00:24:25come into this fight
00:24:27saying,
00:24:27I'm just maturing
00:24:28as a fighter.
00:24:29But right now,
00:24:33Golada's knocking
00:24:34the maturity
00:24:35right out of him
00:24:36to say nothing
00:24:38of other things.
00:24:39You know,
00:24:39sometimes,
00:24:39the guys that come
00:24:40to the fights,
00:24:41the older guys,
00:24:42you never know
00:24:43when they're gonna come there
00:24:44and start to really
00:24:44look their age.
00:24:46And tonight,
00:24:46Jesse is sort of
00:24:47looking his age.
00:24:4841,
00:24:49although he thinks
00:24:50that at 41,
00:24:52he's a better fighter
00:24:53than he was
00:24:5415 years ago.
00:24:55We're gonna do it.
00:24:56We're gonna do it.
00:24:57He could be
00:25:01a better thinking fighter
00:25:02than he was
00:25:0215 years ago.
00:25:04Got a relatively late start
00:25:05in his professional career.
00:25:07Had a pitched battle
00:25:09with Carl the Truth Williams
00:25:10and Williams
00:25:10knocked him out late.
00:25:12Off his performance there,
00:25:13Jesse got a chance
00:25:15to be the opponent
00:25:16in February 1986
00:25:17against a very young
00:25:19heavyweight prospect
00:25:20named Mike Tyson.
00:25:22And a lot of people
00:25:22will remember
00:25:23that Tyson fight.
00:25:24It was his network
00:25:25television debut
00:25:26on ABC
00:25:26and it was the fight
00:25:28after which he said
00:25:29I was trying to drive
00:25:30his nose bone
00:25:31into his brain
00:25:32describing the intention
00:25:33of his uppercut punch.
00:25:36Still to come tonight,
00:25:37Michael Grant
00:25:38will try to drive
00:25:39Ahmad Abdin's nose bone
00:25:42into his brain
00:25:42or something similar
00:25:44as he takes on
00:25:46his former sparring partner.
00:25:48Grant's return to the ring
00:25:49after several months
00:25:51of layoff
00:25:51and a hepatitis A infection.
00:25:53And a hepatitis A infection.
00:25:54Right?
00:25:54Huh?
00:25:55We want your neck?
00:25:56Yes.
00:25:57Yes.
00:25:57Keep your feet right.
00:25:59Ready?
00:25:59Get set.
00:26:00Do you understand me?
00:26:01Let's get off
00:26:01of them combinations now.
00:26:03Find your range!
00:26:04Okay.
00:26:04Huh?
00:26:05Feet grip.
00:26:06Pop the jab.
00:26:06Pop the jab.
00:26:07Find your range.
00:26:08Keep your feet right.
00:26:09All right.
00:26:09Isn't that jab,
00:26:10when he drops the head down,
00:26:12uppercut up under the chin?
00:26:14Okay?
00:26:15Forget about the body.
00:26:15What's going on?
00:26:16Left uppercut.
00:26:17Double jab.
00:26:18Left uppercut under the chin.
00:26:19Let's go.
00:26:25Let's go lose.
00:26:26Let's clean our corner.
00:26:27Let's go lose.
00:26:36Jesse, the boogeyman, Ferguson,
00:26:38heaving just a little bit
00:26:39as he comes out for round four
00:26:41against Andrew Gallata.
00:26:46Gallata set the pace
00:26:47with a sizzling round one
00:26:50throwing 97 punches
00:26:51and hasn't much let up
00:26:52since then.
00:26:53Harold Lederman,
00:26:54how do you have it
00:26:54through three?
00:26:55You know, Jim,
00:26:55I don't know what he was
00:26:56crying about.
00:26:57I think he looks like
00:26:57a million dollars.
00:26:58Three to nothing.
00:26:5930 to 27, Andrew Gallata.
00:27:01I tell you, Jim,
00:27:02if you told me
00:27:03that any of these judges
00:27:04had all 10-8 rounds,
00:27:05I'd agree with him.
00:27:06I mean, Andrew Gallata
00:27:07is very, very close
00:27:08to a 10-8 round
00:27:09at all three rounds.
00:27:09He's probably dominating
00:27:10your fight.
00:27:11Looks like a million dollars.
00:27:12Give him a look, Jesse.
00:27:13Give him a look.
00:27:14Give him a look.
00:27:16Give him a look.
00:27:16A lot of contingents
00:27:29in the upper deck.
00:27:32Just craving the moment
00:27:34when they can break out
00:27:35the flags
00:27:35and start chanting again.
00:27:37It's a little dull
00:27:38for that right now.
00:27:43Most of them
00:27:43still on their feet
00:27:44as they watch their man.
00:27:56A lot of people
00:27:57just wrote Gallata off
00:27:58after the Lewis experience,
00:28:00figuring that if he had not
00:28:02been psychologically broken
00:28:03by all of his
00:28:05self-destructiveness
00:28:05before that,
00:28:06surely this would be
00:28:08the straw that breaks
00:28:09the Campbell's back.
00:28:10As Larry has pointed out,
00:28:12the Galeidocane shot
00:28:13just hours before
00:28:15coming to the arena
00:28:16to fight against Lewis,
00:28:17arrived an hour and a half late,
00:28:19didn't adequately warm up.
00:28:20He says that he felt
00:28:21as though he was in a daze
00:28:23walking into the ring
00:28:24that night.
00:28:25It wasn't just an alibi,
00:28:27the normal price fight
00:28:29alibi either, Jim,
00:28:31because if you recall,
00:28:33after the fight,
00:28:33he suffered a seizure.
00:28:34He was taken out
00:28:36on a stretcher
00:28:37and that's when
00:28:38they found the connection
00:28:39between the drug
00:28:40he had taken
00:28:41and the knockout.
00:28:45He took so many
00:28:47big, good punches
00:28:48from Riddick Bowe,
00:28:49I'm a little hesitant
00:28:50to say that this is
00:28:52a guy with a bad jaw.
00:28:54I wouldn't say
00:28:55he was a guy
00:28:55with a bad jaw,
00:28:57but then this is a guy
00:28:58with a good punch.
00:28:59Big punch.
00:29:00Yeah.
00:29:00And to the degree
00:29:02that a fighter freezes
00:29:04in a situation like that,
00:29:05Galata froze.
00:29:07Well, he was unprofessional
00:29:09in taking that shot.
00:29:11Neither Lou Duva
00:29:12nor anyone else
00:29:13in the corner
00:29:13or his handlers
00:29:15knew about it.
00:29:16It was something
00:29:17he had arranged privately,
00:29:19resulting in a
00:29:21$23 million lawsuit,
00:29:23I understand,
00:29:23against the doctor
00:29:24who administered it.
00:29:27Round four coming
00:29:28to a close.
00:29:28Jesse Ferguson
00:29:29taking a solid beating
00:29:31from Anthony Rolano
00:29:33but standing his ground.
00:29:37All right, good round.
00:29:38Good round.
00:29:43That was good.
00:29:45You changed speeds on him.
00:29:46I want you to change speeds
00:29:47on him a little bit
00:29:47in this round.
00:29:49No, no, no, no.
00:29:52Calm down.
00:29:54Let's see what I'm saying.
00:29:55That was a good round.
00:29:56You changed speeds up.
00:29:57When you change speeds on him,
00:29:58you're hurting.
00:29:59But I don't want you
00:30:00standing right directly
00:30:01in front of him
00:30:02trying to create a powerpoint.
00:30:03I want you stepping around him.
00:30:05This room.
00:30:05This room of what?
00:30:06You behind, man.
00:30:07Come on.
00:30:08We got to...
00:30:08Come on.
00:30:10Get a rinse.
00:30:12Hurry up.
00:30:13Come on.
00:30:14Come on.
00:30:15We can get this guy now, man.
00:30:16You're waiting too long, man.
00:30:18Come on, man.
00:30:18All right.
00:30:19Come on.
00:30:19Hey.
00:30:19Come on.
00:30:20Let's do it, man.
00:30:20You're blowing it.
00:30:22Come on, man.
00:30:22Right now, the only question appears to be
00:30:30whether Gulotta can finish Ferguson in style.
00:30:36Oh, hold on.
00:30:37Hold on.
00:30:38Come on, guys.
00:30:40All right.
00:30:40Time in.
00:30:41Let's go.
00:30:41Momentary delay while Cortez waited
00:30:45for Lou Duvland and Ronnie Shields
00:30:48to exit the ring in Gulotta's corner.
00:30:55You always have to wonder in a fight like this,
00:30:56will Gulotta get bored and get caught
00:30:58with a big punch, too, though?
00:31:01Well, or will he get disqualified?
00:31:04You have to regard it as at least a possibility
00:31:07in every one of his fights.
00:31:08Even prior to his self-destruction
00:31:12against Bowe in July of 96
00:31:14when he was winning the fight easily
00:31:16and was disqualified on low blows the first time,
00:31:19even prior to that,
00:31:20he had purposely head-butted Donnell Nicholson
00:31:23in a fight that he was winning easily.
00:31:25He had purposely bitten Samson Pauha on the shoulder
00:31:28in a fight that he was winning easily.
00:31:30So this guy can go off at any moment,
00:31:32and it doesn't matter whether he's winning or losing.
00:31:34Yeah, but he seems to be showing a lot more control tonight
00:31:37than he did in those fights in the early rounds.
00:31:42I think and I hope he learned his lesson.
00:31:45And I don't think we'll be seeing
00:31:47any more of that from Andrew.
00:31:48Gulotta's wife is a Polish-born,
00:31:51American-practicing attorney,
00:31:54and she is clearly the common-sense conduit
00:31:58through which his handlers
00:31:59and the people around him try to communicate
00:32:01and hope to establish some solid ground.
00:32:06In our meetings with Gulotta,
00:32:09the norm is that he begins the answer to each question,
00:32:12and then either Lou Duva or his wife
00:32:14finishes the answer for him.
00:32:16Ferguson appears intent on just hanging around
00:32:29and seeing what strange things are going to happen.
00:32:32Yeah, he doesn't even seem to have much steam
00:32:34on his punches now.
00:32:35Jesse trying to step around
00:32:47to land the left hook to the body,
00:32:49but doing so almost in slow motion.
00:32:51That was a pretty good hook by the boogie man.
00:33:07And there's some life
00:33:08doubling up on the left hook.
00:33:17He just can't seem to get out of the way
00:33:20of Andrew's straight-right lead.
00:33:22When Andrew steps up
00:33:24and begins pumping his jab
00:33:26and working behind it,
00:33:27Ferguson can't throw.
00:33:30So it's jab, jab, right hand.
00:33:33And the right hand lands every time.
00:33:42Gulotta landed a punch just after the bell.
00:33:46Ferguson reached around the referee
00:33:48to retaliate.
00:33:50The referee is taking a point away from him.
00:33:52So Ferguson is the first
00:33:54to be penalized in the fight.
00:33:57There have been warnings to Gulotta
00:33:59for low lows,
00:34:01but it's Jesse who takes
00:34:02the first point penalty.
00:34:03Make this fight easy.
00:34:05Make it easy.
00:34:06Step around him now.
00:34:07Use your legs as right.
00:34:08He's tired.
00:34:09Make him come to you.
00:34:11That wasn't that late of a punch.
00:34:21Obviously, it was thrown just at
00:34:23or a millisecond before the bell rang.
00:34:29Yes, and it could be that
00:34:31Ferguson is anxious to capitalize
00:34:33on any opportunity to create havoc
00:34:35in the ring
00:34:36and get the lot outside of his envelope.
00:34:41Well, he's probably a little frustrated right now.
00:34:43Nothing seems to be going his way.
00:34:45And sometimes when a guy gets
00:34:47to this point in a fight,
00:34:48it's easy for anything
00:34:49to make him go off.
00:34:51Ferguson landed 19 punches
00:34:53in round number five.
00:34:54That's by far
00:34:55his best round in the bout,
00:34:57but Gulotta landed 31 of 68.
00:34:59So Andrew continues to dominate
00:35:02both in terms of CompuVox numbers
00:35:04and the subjective impression
00:35:06of what we're seeing in the ring.
00:35:08And Ferguson continues to hang in,
00:35:10hoping to be the beneficiary
00:35:11of something strange.
00:35:15His punches, his power punches
00:35:17don't seem to hurt Andrew at all.
00:35:24Jesse trying to duck the right hand.
00:35:27And Gulotta still landing.
00:35:29With constant accuracy there.
00:35:34As in that right hand.
00:35:41Is Jesse looking to set him up
00:35:42for something, Roy?
00:35:44Jesse's looking for one punch
00:35:45to try to hurt Gulotta,
00:35:46but I don't really think
00:35:47his punching power
00:35:48is the same as it usually is.
00:35:51I don't think he can hurt Gulotta
00:35:53with a power punch right there.
00:35:56I think there's a cut
00:35:58over Ferguson's left eye.
00:35:59That'll mean that cut man
00:36:02Willie Folk
00:36:03will have to go to work
00:36:04to help keep him in the fight.
00:36:08And I think it came
00:36:09from the overhand right.
00:36:11That would make sense, yeah?
00:36:15I think that cut
00:36:16is below the eyebrow.
00:36:19Makes it a tough place
00:36:20for cut man Willie Folk
00:36:22to do his job.
00:36:31Ferguson has taken a real beating here.
00:36:33Chocking right hand by Gulotta.
00:36:36Now, one of the things
00:36:37I was curious about
00:36:38was whether Gulotta,
00:36:40in his eagerness
00:36:42to be more controlled than measured,
00:36:44would lose his aggression.
00:36:46but he's showing
00:36:47here at least
00:36:48against Jesse Ferguson
00:36:50that he has a good balance
00:36:52between boxing him
00:36:54and aggressing him.
00:36:57And he's still
00:37:03defending himself very well.
00:37:04So if he worried
00:37:05that he wasn't
00:37:06going to be able
00:37:07to look good
00:37:07against Ferguson,
00:37:09so far that concern
00:37:10appears unfounded.
00:37:13Both of our experts
00:37:14impressed with what
00:37:16they see of Gulotta here.
00:37:17And last, Jesse Ferguson
00:37:31fought on this network
00:37:32against Samson Pouha.
00:37:35I mistakenly identified
00:37:36his cut man as Leon Tabb
00:37:38because that was the information
00:37:39I'd been given.
00:37:40Leon wasn't there that night.
00:37:41Willie Folk was.
00:37:42And Willie Folk is here again tonight.
00:37:44Didn't he fight again?
00:37:45This month,
00:37:45on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,
00:37:47we'll investigate
00:37:48offshore gambling operations
00:37:49which take in hundreds
00:37:50of millions of dollars
00:37:51in illegal sports bets.
00:37:53And we'll look at
00:37:53the grueling
00:37:54and often frustrating life
00:37:55of an NFL assistant coach.
00:37:57If you missed the premiere
00:37:58this week,
00:37:59you can catch it January 31
00:38:00and then again
00:38:02on February 4,
00:38:03Real Sports
00:38:04with Bryant Gumbel.
00:38:05I'll see you next time.
00:38:08I'll see you next time.
00:38:08I'll see you next time.
00:38:10I'll see you next time.
00:38:11You okay?
00:38:11Jesse?
00:38:12Oh yeah.
00:38:12I'm here to protect you
00:38:14from taking out
00:38:14serious punishment.
00:38:15That's my job in here.
00:38:16Close your mouth.
00:38:17Yes.
00:38:18What about this one?
00:38:19Jesse,
00:38:19you're not working hard enough,
00:38:21Jesse,
00:38:21and you're not keeping
00:38:22your feet right.
00:38:23That's what's making
00:38:23you look bad.
00:38:25You understand?
00:38:25Keep your feet right
00:38:26and work off the jab.
00:38:27And shake it.
00:38:29Come on, Jesse.
00:38:30You're about to do it.
00:38:30My recollection, Jim,
00:38:33is that Jesse also
00:38:35wins against Hasim Rahman,
00:38:38if you recall.
00:38:40Yeah.
00:38:41A difficult, grueling fight.
00:38:46Won by Rahman.
00:38:47Won easily by Rahman.
00:38:50You know, this fight,
00:38:53you know,
00:38:53as far as anything we can tell,
00:38:56barring the unforeseen,
00:38:58which you never can fully bar
00:38:59with Gulotta,
00:39:00is really over.
00:39:05I mean,
00:39:05it has been for several rounds,
00:39:07almost from the start.
00:39:09Gulotta is simply
00:39:10outclassing him.
00:39:13The only question here
00:39:14is whether he can
00:39:15go out in style.
00:39:18Chopping right hand again
00:39:19lands for Gulotta
00:39:20up behind Ferguson's left ear.
00:39:24It was fascinating
00:39:25between rounds
00:39:26to hear trainer Roman Fuller
00:39:28asking Jesse
00:39:29to just set his feet
00:39:30in the right position
00:39:31and work behind the jab.
00:39:32I don't think I've seen him
00:39:33make a legitimate effort
00:39:34to land the jab
00:39:35against Gulotta
00:39:36yet in the fight.
00:39:39No, but Gulotta's making him
00:39:41keep that left hand
00:39:42at home to defend himself.
00:39:45Ferguson has fired
00:39:46some left hooks,
00:39:47generally in retaliation
00:39:49after Gulotta
00:39:49and Gulotta has landed
00:39:50a combination.
00:39:52Gulotta flirting
00:39:52with body punches
00:39:53again there.
00:39:54And Ferguson comes upstairs
00:39:56and lands a right hand.
00:40:02Certainly,
00:40:03Gulotta unruffled
00:40:04when Ferguson lands a punch.
00:40:07And remember that
00:40:08Jesse got the notice
00:40:09two days ago
00:40:11and accepted the opportunity
00:40:12to fight
00:40:12despite the fact
00:40:13he was in gym shape,
00:40:15not really fighting shape.
00:40:25As this fight goes on,
00:40:28it looks more and more like
00:40:29Gulotta's a big
00:40:31four-wheel drive
00:40:34sport vehicle
00:40:36and Jesse a very used car.
00:40:42Cortez again
00:40:43warning Gulotta
00:40:43for blows to Ferguson's hip
00:40:45but no point deduction.
00:40:47Again,
00:40:47the only point deduction
00:40:48in the bout so far
00:40:49against Ferguson
00:40:50for attempting to hit
00:40:51after the bell.
00:40:52Bring it, bring it, bring it, bring it.
00:40:53Bring it, bring it, bring it.
00:40:54Bring it, bring it, bring it.
00:40:55Bring it, bring it.
00:40:55The cup is up too high.
00:40:57Let's go.
00:40:57Come on, let's go.
00:41:02Come on, let's go.
00:41:04Look down, let's go.
00:41:20On the basis of what
00:41:21we have seen so far,
00:41:22Gulotta has earned
00:41:23another look
00:41:25against a higher quality opponent.
00:41:28I agree with that.
00:41:34A lot of distance across the top of the right hand.
00:41:39Joe Cortez, well aware that Ferguson wants to create havoc in there,
00:41:43just flings Jesse out of the way.
00:41:49Larry, here's a look at Galada against Tim Witherspoon back in October.
00:41:53Yeah, and he fought a very similar fight against a more dangerous,
00:41:59higher-level opponent who was also at the end of his career.
00:42:04Dominated Witherspoon, Witherspoon looking to land a big right hand in the fight,
00:42:09never did anything such a different.
00:42:10Let's make it a little bit easier, all right?
00:42:11Let's see a little more movement to the left.
00:42:13The overhand right has killed me.
00:42:15Sometimes come back.
00:42:16Nobody shot.
00:42:17Forget about it.
00:42:18You don't need it.
00:42:19Uppercut.
00:42:20Jab right, uppercut.
00:42:22Overhand right, left uppercut.
00:42:24Jab, overhand right, left uppercut.
00:42:26Anything.
00:42:27All right, so he's up.
00:42:29Yeah, he's picking up now, Judgey.
00:42:30You're only throwing one if you touch.
00:42:32Through seven rounds so far by CompuBox numbers,
00:42:37Galada has doubled Ferguson in punch output, 533 to 266,
00:42:42and more than tripled him in connections.
00:42:44Galada landing 264 punches, only 83 for Ferguson.
00:42:48Jabs, forget it.
00:42:49Galada, 106 out of 226.
00:42:51So it's a CompuBox wipeout with Andrew Galada easily beating Jesse Ferguson,
00:42:57going into the eighth.
00:42:58Harold Letterman, how do you have it through seven?
00:43:00I got it a shout-out, Jim.
00:43:0170 to 62.
00:43:03Andrew Galada, seven rounds to nothing.
00:43:04Jim, two things I want to point out to you.
00:43:06Number one, even though the punch came after the bell, ending the fifth round,
00:43:10that the fifth round was over, the point comes off of Jesse Ferguson's score for the fifth round,
00:43:16not the sixth.
00:43:17So Joe Cortez took that point at the end of the fifth.
00:43:19It comes off Ferguson's score for the fifth round.
00:43:21And the second thing is I always talk about ring generalship.
00:43:24Watch the way Andrew Galada steps to his right hand to stay away from Jesse Ferguson's big right hand.
00:43:31That's good ring generalship.
00:43:32You've got to give Galada credit for that.
00:43:50Well, Larry, Galada's been mentioned by some people as a possible opponent for Mike Tyson
00:43:56as Tyson tries to make his way back toward prominence in the division.
00:43:59Off what you see tonight, do you think Tyson's people would consider putting Mike in with Galada?
00:44:05It's a good question.
00:44:08What the Wags were saying was that if Galada looked too good, he would never get the fight
00:44:12because Tyson's handlers are not that interested in putting him in with a good fighter yet
00:44:19or a dangerous fighter or a highly skilled one.
00:44:23I'm not sure what they think.
00:44:25He certainly is more dangerous than a lot of the other opponents I've heard as possibles for Tyson.
00:44:35Does he look as good to you, Roy, as he looked in 1996 when he was dominating Riddick Bowe at close range?
00:44:42He looks even better to me because he has to do two things.
00:44:45He has to remain in control of what he's doing.
00:44:48But he also has to move around the boogeyman to make sure that the boogeyman does not catch him
00:44:52with a big shot to upset him or to make him lose his cool.
00:44:56So he's showing more points here than he ever showed before.
00:44:59And he's looking good because he's not walking straight in on the boogeyman.
00:45:02He's going to the left, he's going to the right, and he's challenging his attack.
00:45:05And three more effective combinations for Galada as Roy was making the point.
00:45:10So you see a man under control using his multiplicity of formidable skills, closing in on a possible
00:45:19wear-em-down knockout of Jesse Ferguson.
00:45:23And you wonder, where does Galada go from here, and who will take the risk of giving him a chance?
00:45:29You think he could show this kind of poise against a better quality fighter who puts some real heat on him?
00:45:37That's why we have fights, so we can see.
00:45:40It's a fascinating question.
00:45:41It always has been with this man.
00:45:46Still to come tonight, Ahmad Abdin came to this country at 15 years old.
00:45:51His family owns a tow truck service in Houston.
00:45:54And as the result of his purse tonight, their 40-truck fleet will become 42 sometime next week.
00:46:02And they hope they don't have to take him away behind one of those tow trucks tonight.
00:46:09Though the possibility certainly exists.
00:46:12Keep boxing.
00:46:13I did the same beat to him over there, too.
00:46:15Connect percentages impressive throughout the fight for Galada, and the eighth round was his best round.
00:46:20He's trying to make him mad.
00:46:21He's trying to even blow the belt.
00:46:22Snap that jab.
00:46:23Snap that jab, baby.
00:46:24Snap that jab in front of him.
00:46:25You can hit this guy with right hand.
00:46:27You can leave with right hand and come right back on left door.
00:46:29He's dropping everything over there.
00:46:30You got it?
00:46:33Mind your range.
00:46:33You understand the range?
00:46:36Come on, move.
00:46:41Oh, nine.
00:46:43Nine.
00:46:45Okay, time in.
00:46:48Sweat being wiped up in both corners, even as the action begins in center ring.
00:46:53Ferguson's face, a mask of pain now, as Galada has drawn blood and puffed up Jesse around both eyes.
00:47:02Well, Jesse's an old Marine.
00:47:04Spent four years in the Marines.
00:47:06Hasn't landed a lot here.
00:47:08But he is, uh, he's a warrior.
00:47:11And I'm pretty sure he'll do all that he can to make sure he's here at the end.
00:47:20Jesse Ferguson from the eastern North Carolina tobacco town of Nightdale against Andrew Galada of Warsaw.
00:47:38And Chicago.
00:47:42That's correct.
00:47:46Ferguson with a double left.
00:47:49And Galada shakes his head as if to say, you didn't hurt me.
00:47:52But it was one of Jesse's better moments in the whole fight.
00:47:55When a fighter says, you didn't hurt me, chances are he hurt you.
00:48:07Sometimes that's true.
00:48:08Sometimes that's not.
00:48:08You ever do that, Roy?
00:48:09You ever get your bell rung and immediately look at the other guy and shake your head like, no, no.
00:48:14No, I don't do that.
00:48:15You've never done it.
00:48:15If my bell gets rung, you can believe that you would know my bell got rung.
00:48:23Well, the knockdown against Duvall was a flash knockdown.
00:48:26Who's the last guy to really hurt you with him?
00:48:29I don't know.
00:48:30It's been so long.
00:48:31Uh-huh.
00:48:32I think I've been hurt more by punches that miss me than I have by the ones that connect.
00:48:38Well, or as director Mark Payton points out from the truck, some of those judges in Seoul hurt you pretty badly.
00:48:45Yeah, they hurt me real bad.
00:48:51Same Olympics where Andrew Galada won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division.
00:48:56Did you see him fight over there, Roy?
00:48:58No, I never got a chance to see Andrew fight.
00:49:00I probably wouldn't have known who he was anyway.
00:49:03Well, he weighed about 30 pounds, 35 pounds less at that time.
00:49:12Yes, and remember in the Olympics, the big class is super heavyweight.
00:49:16So if you're a heavyweight, you're somewhere just below that.
00:49:20I believe the heavyweight limit is 201.
00:49:22Yep.
00:49:22But Ray Mercer, I believe, won that gold medal.
00:49:25He won the heavyweight gold medal.
00:49:26And Riddick Cole won the...
00:49:28No, no, no.
00:49:28No, he's got a silver.
00:49:30I said one, the silver medal in the super heavyweight division.
00:49:33And it's who has won the gold medal.
00:49:35That's right.
00:49:39We're vamping here, folks.
00:49:40Because this fight seems to have an ordained finish.
00:49:47All right, that's what I want to see.
00:49:59That's what I want to see.
00:50:01What you were doing at the end of that round.
00:50:03Listen, it's the last round.
00:50:05I want you to start off, use the jab, walking around.
00:50:08And then I want you to work that left hand overtime.
00:50:10You understand, guys?
00:50:11It's the last round.
00:50:12If you say one thing, you're going to go out and do something else.
00:50:14That's right.
00:50:14Touching up.
00:50:15Give me a good sportsman, right?
00:50:16I don't want to take any points.
00:50:17Come on, Jesse.
00:50:18Let's go now.
00:50:19Last round, now.
00:50:19You're messing around.
00:50:23Last round.
00:50:24Give me a good sportsman, right?
00:50:26Okay?
00:50:26Don't go.
00:50:28You're beautiful.
00:50:29You're beautiful.
00:50:30Keep in track of the movie.
00:50:31Listen, he's going to be gastered when he's going over hand right.
00:50:34That's right.
00:50:35You know how to do that.
00:50:36You know, he's just walking around slapping, throwing the most bullshit.
00:50:40Let's go, man.
00:50:41Let's go.
00:50:43You need to knock him out.
00:50:43Watch your hand right.
00:50:44Your jab is working.
00:50:45Stop that jab.
00:50:5710th and final round upcoming for Jesse Ferguson and Andrew Gulotta.
00:51:02And regardless of how badly embarrassed Ferguson may be by CompuBox numbers
00:51:07and by the competitive picture of what's happened in the fight,
00:51:10by making it to the last of 10 rounds,
00:51:13having taken the fight on about 72 hours notice,
00:51:16I think you have to say he's done his job.
00:51:19Harold, how do you have it through nine?
00:51:21I tell you, I got Andrew Gulotta at least 11 points ahead.
00:51:25Nine to nothing, 90 to 79, Andrew Gulotta.
00:51:28Jim, there's two flawless performances out there tonight.
00:51:30One by Andrew Gulotta and the other by referee Joe Cortez
00:51:33who's doing a beautiful job kicking patrolling his fight.
00:51:36Gulotta really picking up the pace trying to finish him in the 10th,
00:51:39but he's so far ahead, it's amazing.
00:51:41I tell you, he just shows us everything.
00:51:42But I think also because he has fought in a more measured style,
00:51:47he has more left here at the end.
00:51:51Well, one of the things...
00:51:52And, of course, he hasn't taken much punishment,
00:51:54which always helps.
00:51:55Even when he was fighting at the pinnacle of the division against Bowe,
00:52:00his trainer, Roger Bloodworth, acknowledged
00:52:02he didn't really know how to breathe in the ring.
00:52:04They've still been trying to teach him from that day forward
00:52:06how to breathe and keep his energy level
00:52:08somewhat constant in the ring.
00:52:10And, obviously, he's doing much better in that regard.
00:52:13He's gotten a lot better in that regard.
00:52:15I'm highly impressed with the left and right movement tonight.
00:52:22He's just a big, cat-quick athlete
00:52:25for a 240-pound heavyweight.
00:52:27There aren't too many people as gifted as Andrew Gulotta.
00:52:36Somebody hands me a note from behind.
00:52:38I don't even know where the note comes from.
00:52:40But the observation of somebody here at ringside is,
00:52:43well, he's fought himself out of a chance at Tyson anytime soon.
00:52:49Likely to be a popular observation
00:52:51after this performance by Gulotta.
00:52:54What are they trying to say about Tyson?
00:52:57Well, it may take time.
00:52:59I guess they're saying it'll take time.
00:53:00Well, you know, Mike is trying to make money right now,
00:53:03and that's very understandable.
00:53:05I just don't think he would want to rush in
00:53:07and take an unnecessary chance
00:53:09until he's got his faculty back together.
00:53:11against a guy who outweighs him by 20 pounds.
00:53:16Gulotta trying one more time
00:53:18to put the hurt on Jesse, the boogeyman Ferguson,
00:53:21but the boogeyman has come in,
00:53:23taken his medicine,
00:53:25and he's going to be able to stand up for 10 rounds
00:53:27and say, oh, come on.
00:53:29He ain't nothing.
00:53:29He didn't knock me out.
00:53:30He didn't knock me out.
00:53:34Polish crowd chanting in Polish on the upper deck.
00:53:46They would have loved to have seen a knockout,
00:53:48but they've seen a totally competent,
00:53:50professional performance all the way,
00:53:52and Ferguson's going to finish this bout
00:53:55with blood flowing on both sides.
00:53:56Not easy coming back from the humiliations
00:54:15that Andrew Gulotta has visited upon himself,
00:54:23and I think we should give him credit
00:54:25for making the effort.
00:54:27Harold, would you like to show us
00:54:37what a shout-out looks like on the scorecard?
00:54:39Jim, I think there's no question.
00:54:40I've got at 100 to 88,
00:54:4210 rounds to nothing, Andrew Gulotta.
00:54:44You have to give Andrew Gulotta
00:54:46an extra point to round five
00:54:47because Joe took a point from him,
00:54:49and you have to give Andrew Gulotta
00:54:50an extra point in round eight
00:54:51because he won it so big.
00:54:52That's a 10-8 round without a knockdown.
00:54:54So it's Gulotta easy.
00:54:58You are a master of the obvious, Harold.
00:55:08It was supposed to be Gulotta
00:55:10against Jimmy Thunder.
00:55:12Thunder tore an Achilles tendon
00:55:14earlier this week,
00:55:16and when properly diagnosed
00:55:18with the Achilles tendon tear
00:55:20as of Tuesday,
00:55:21he declared himself out of the bout
00:55:22by Wednesday, late,
00:55:25Ferguson had been lined up
00:55:26as the opponent.
00:55:28Thursday, Gulotta arrived here
00:55:30and was told that he was fighting
00:55:31Jesse Ferguson instead of Jimmy Thunder.
00:55:33At that point,
00:55:33Gulotta locked himself in a room,
00:55:35and Larry Merchant tells us
00:55:37he learned that Gulotta wept
00:55:39about the unexpected circumstance
00:55:42he was facing.
00:55:43He was that freaked out
00:55:44at the notion of having to fight
00:55:45Jesse the Boogeyman Ferguson
00:55:47instead of Jimmy Thunder.
00:55:48So what does he do?
00:55:49He goes out and shuts him out.
00:55:50Let's go up to Michael Buffer
00:55:52with the official particulars.
00:55:55Ladies and gentlemen,
00:55:56from Bally's Park Place,
00:55:57Atlantic City,
00:55:58we go to the Budweiser scorecards.
00:56:01Hilton Whitaker and John Pottery
00:56:02both scored about 100 to 89.
00:56:06Gene Williams has it 99 to 90.
00:56:08For the winner by unanimous decision,
00:56:11Andrew...

00:56:14Go!
00:56:14Go!

00:56:16Go!
00:56:17Go!
00:56:17Go!
00:56:17Go!
00:56:18Go!
00:56:19Go!
00:56:20Go!
00:56:20Go!
00:56:27Go!
00:56:27Go!
00:56:29Go!
00:56:30Have a wonderful applause
00:56:30for the perfect game effort
00:56:32from Jesse Ferguson of Philadelphia.
00:56:34sein.
00:56:39Final punchRot numbers.
00:56:41As we mentioned,
00:56:42the Compu 정도로
00:56:43wipeout.
00:56:44Gulotta more than doubling
00:56:45ferguson's punch output,
00:56:47nearly quadrupling
00:56:48his Kinect output
00:56:50and virtually doubling
00:56:52Ferguson and Kinect percentage
00:56:54jabs completely dominated by Galata
00:56:56he's got one of the better jabs
00:56:58in the heavyweight division
00:57:00so off of that
00:57:03do you put Andrew Galata back in the
00:57:05Pantheon of fighters who will be looking for a chance
00:57:07to fight the winner of Holyfield
00:57:09Lewis, certainly in terms
00:57:11of the quality of his performances
00:57:13he might deserve that kind of
00:57:15consideration, whether he's yet taken that seriously
00:57:17by promoters and by
00:57:19the boxing public, that remains
00:57:21to be seen, still to come tonight
00:57:23a look at another rising
00:57:25heavyweight, this one already
00:57:27unanimously anointed as the number
00:57:29three man in the division behind Holyfield
00:57:31and Lewis, that'll be Michael Grant
00:57:33and he's fighting against a former sparring
00:57:35partner named Ahmad Abdin
00:57:37as he comes back from a long
00:57:39layoff, very quickly
00:57:41Roy Jones, I mentioned the question
00:57:43of whether Galata filters into the
00:57:45mix now of possible opponents for
00:57:47the Holyfield Lewis winner, you put him there?
00:57:49Oh yes, most definitely
00:57:50he has quick hands, he has that huge frame
00:57:53for a heavyweight that we like to see
00:57:55he has pretty good punching power
00:57:57and he throws a lot of punches
00:57:58he showed a lot of movement tonight
00:58:00he showed a lot of good things that
00:58:01makes for a good fight with
00:58:03any of the top ten heavyweights right now

00:59:20since Leonard Hearns won back in 1981
00:59:23Oscar De La Hoya
00:59:25joining us live from his training camp
00:59:27in Big Bear, California
00:59:28Ike Quarte in Pensacola, Florida
00:59:30Oscar, I'm going to start with you
00:59:32because I don't know if you saw
00:59:34my live interview with Ike Quarte
00:59:36a couple of weeks ago in Pensacola, Florida
00:59:39as we were getting ready to watch Roy Jones fight
00:59:41but I couldn't believe the degree
00:59:43to which he dissed you, Oscar
00:59:45this guy, in his public pronouncements
00:59:47before this fight
00:59:48shows you very little respect
00:59:50I wonder if you're startled
00:59:51at the kinds of things he's said about you
00:59:53I actually did not have the opportunity
00:59:56to witness or listen to what he said
00:59:59but I'm pretty sure he's kind of
01:00:01trash-talking me
01:00:03or trying to say negative things about me
01:00:05but hey, it's okay
01:00:07it's all talk
01:00:07that's all it is
01:00:09well Oscar, it's an unusual moment in your career
01:00:11because in the past I think you've been able to get into that envelope
01:00:15where the next big fight is all-consuming
01:00:18but your life is more complicated outside the ring right now
01:00:21than has ever been the case before
01:00:23can you still get into that frame of mind where
01:00:26all you see and think about is Ike Quarte?
01:00:28Jim Blampley, this is the very first time
01:00:31that I have felt focused, determined, and ready to win a fight
01:00:36the first time I felt it a while back was when I fought Chavez the first time
01:00:40I was dedicated, I was motivated, I was focused
01:00:43Ike Quarte brought that out in me
01:00:46and so this time around you will see the real Oscar de la Hoya
01:00:49well, Ike Quarte, there you have it
01:00:52the man says you're going to see the real Oscar de la Hoya
01:00:54I referred to the things you've said about him in the past
01:00:57you have publicly said
01:00:59that this is going to be an easy fight for you
01:01:01isn't that a very dangerous way
01:01:03of getting ready to fight a guy who's unbeaten
01:01:06has fought a lot of very good fighters
01:01:08has a very strong background coming into the ring
01:01:11well, I think this fight is a big fight, you know
01:01:17I'm a person to win this fight
01:01:20you know, I respect Oscar a lot, you know, as a champion
01:01:23well, I think this fight is not a big
01:01:24you know, a tough fight for me, like I said
01:01:26it's a big fight, but Oscar is big
01:01:28I always say Oscar is big in America
01:01:31Ike, how big? Everybody talks about how this is the biggest challenge yet
01:01:35in Oscar's career
01:01:37I don't know that anybody's asked you the same question
01:01:39is this the toughest fight so far
01:01:42in your career?
01:01:43well, I don't think this fight is the toughest fight for me
01:01:47like I always say everyday, Oscar is not tough
01:01:49Oscar is known in the American market
01:01:52as a champion, golden boy
01:01:55that's what everyone knows
01:01:56but I think competitive in February
01:01:58there will be a different thing
01:02:00Oscar, does that make your blood flow to hear him say that?
01:02:02no, it actually doesn't, Jim
01:02:05hey, this is boxing, people want to hear
01:02:07each other trash talking to each other
01:02:09but, you know it's not me
01:02:11I'm going to show my talent up in the ring
01:02:13I'm going to show what I have, what I've been training for
01:02:15on February 13th
01:02:17Ike, I respect the guy, he's a very well determined fighter
01:02:21who will go up there and do his job
01:02:23I mean, that's the reason why Ike is going to bring the best out of me
01:02:27a very professional performance by both of you tonight
01:02:30Ike, Oscar, I can't wait to see the two of you two weeks from now
