Mike McCallum faces Randall Yonker in a WBC Light Heavyweight Title eliminator bout on Showtime Boxing
Transcript
00:00There was a time when he was Gerald Who, then he became the WBC middleweight champion of the world.
00:06Today, the only question is, who can undo him?
00:09Perhaps the hard-hitting knockout specialist Gilbert Baptiste, who gets his shot at making McClellan yesterday's news.
00:15It's the highlight of a Showtime night of boxing, also featuring two-time champ Mike McCallum,
00:20mixing it up with the number one light heavyweight contender, Randall Yonker.
00:25Next, exclusively on Showtime Championship Boxing.
00:30Showtime Championship Boxing
01:00He's defeated in over 13 years and 90 fights.
01:03Randall fighting a brilliant fight tonight against Chavez.
01:09And after 12 rounds, Randall stunned the boxing world.
01:14The winner and new champion.
01:17Now, just weeks later in the very same arena, WBC middleweight champion Gerald McClellan, coming off his record-breaking 30-second knockout of J-Bell,
01:27dares to put his title on the line against the upset-minded Gilbert Baptiste.
01:31Plus, for the WBC light heavyweight interim championship, number one contender Randall Yonker takes on former WBA junior middleweight and middleweight champion Mike McCallum.
01:42It's live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
01:46McClellan vs. Baptiste for the WBC middleweight title and Yonker vs. McCallum for the WBC light heavyweight interim championship on Showtime Championship Boxing.
01:58And we welcome you live to the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada, as we return to the scene of one of the biggest and most compelling upsets in boxing history.
02:20It was just about one month ago when the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez was shot by unheralded Frankie Randall right here in this arena.
02:29Here's another upset in the offing on what has long been known as the network of upsets.
02:37Hello again, everybody. I'm Steve Albert, and welcome to another edition of Showtime Championship Boxing.
02:42This evening, we present one championship fight, and in addition, what the World Boxing Council had originally deemed an interim championship fight.
02:49However, as we speak, the status of this fight is being contested in court.
02:54Yes, unique circumstances indeed. The result of changes from original opponents.
02:59Jeff Harding was supposed to defend his WBC light heavyweight title against number one contender, Randall Yonker.
03:06But just last week, Harding pulled out due to a cut over his eye.
03:09To further complicate matters because of other injuries, managerial woes, promotional problems, etc.,
03:15Harding has not defended his title in about 15 months.
03:18So, the WBC had declared that the winner of tonight's bout between Randall Yonker and Mike McCallum, a late fill-in, would be the interim champ.
03:27If Harding doesn't fight the winner in a soon-to-be-specified amount of time, he will be stripped of the title.
03:33Well, once again, the sport of boxing gets caught up in the intrigues, the backroom maneuverings, and litigation that has given a sour taste to the sweet science.
03:42As of this morning, the WBC had been referring to the Yonker vs. McCallum bout as an interim championship.
03:47However, just a few hours prior to coming on the air tonight, this network received notice from main events that Dan Duva, Lou Duva,
03:55and light heavyweight contender Egerton Marcus have obtained a temporary restraining order from a New Jersey judge against the WBC and Don King Productions,
04:04preventing them from referring to this as a championship bout.
04:07We have been instructed by this order that, quote,
04:10this bout is not a WBC championship bout or interim championship bout pending the outcome of an arbitration, unquote.
04:18And because we had no conversations with the Duvas or their lawyers,
04:21we can only assume that the reason for this and the inclusion of Egerton Marcus in the legal action
04:27is that main events believes Marcus, and not McCallum, should be fighting for this so-called interim title.
04:34So we don't really know what, if anything, is at stake in Yonker vs. McCallum.
04:38All we know is that, yet again, the fighting in the ring becomes tainted and encumbered by the fighting in the courts.
04:45Meanwhile, WBC middleweight champion Gerald McClellan was originally scheduled to fight number one contender Lamar Parks tonight,
04:51but Parks pulled out with a bad shoulder, so the call went out to veteran Gilbert Baptiste,
04:57and he will provide opposition for McClellan instead.
05:01And on that note, let me bring in my partner, the fight doctor, Ferdie Pacheco.
05:04And, Ferdie, will the change of opponents have an effect on Gerald McClellan?
05:07No.
05:08McClellan, Gerald McClellan's the kind of fighter that's confident in his punching power.
05:12He thinks he can get anybody out of there in four or five rounds.
05:15The problem today is he's had weight problems.
05:17He's had a little bit of managerial problem.
05:19If he doesn't get him out in five, then he's going to have some problems going to the end.
05:23So, did it affect him?
05:25Not at all.
05:25He just figures he's going to come in here and knock this guy out in five rounds.
05:28Could McClellan be looking ahead to Julian Jackson in the rematch?
05:31Oh, most definitely.
05:32That is his hardest fight.
05:34After all, Julian Jackson has a kind of punch.
05:36One punch and you're out of there.
05:37He is looking forward to it, and Baptiste doesn't present a big challenge to him here.
05:43It's just another guy to bowl over on the way to Julian Jackson.
05:46That could be a mistake.
05:47All right, Ferdy, let's turn now to our other sidekick, two-time world champion Bobby Chez.
05:51And, Bobby, your opinion of this so-called interim championship that was to be between Randall Yonker and Mike McKellen?
05:58Well, Steve, I don't like it.
05:59I don't think it's good for boxing.
06:01What you should have here is the champion should be able to keep his championship until he is healed.
06:05If not, let him vacate that title, have the number one and two fighters fight for the title,
06:09and guarantee him the right to fight for his championship once again when he's fully healed.
06:13With all the boxing politics and alphabet soup organizations, this will just cause more confusion for boxing and conflict,
06:19and I don't like it, Steve.
06:20Not at all.
06:21All right, Bobby, earlier this evening on the undercard of tonight's fight program here at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas,
06:26it was the battle for the WBA Junior Middleweight Championship between Julio Cesar Vazquez,
06:32the reigning champion entering the bout, and number five contender Armand Picar.
06:36Right now, let's take a look at the highlights of that matchup.
06:40And the champion Vazquez in the white trunks, 47-1 with 33 KOs from Argentina.
06:45The challenger, Picar, in the red trunks, 16-13-4 with 10 knockouts from Manila, the Philippines.
06:51And this one, really, no contest.
06:53All Vazquez, as we show you action from round two, as he totally overmatched to Picar.
06:58You saw the first knockdown.
06:59Vazquez put Picar on the canvas, count him three times,
07:03and according to the World Boxing Association, the three knockdown rule in effect.
07:08So, that was it.
07:10As the other, Julio Cesar, Julio Cesar Vazquez, son of a Santa Fe Argentina baker,
07:16goes to 48-1 with 34 knockouts officially.
07:19TKO round two for Vazquez.
07:21So, some international flavor on tonight's undercard here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada,
07:28as we close in on our featured events of the evening.
07:32Our main event features knockout artist Gerald McClellan, the WBC middleweight champion,
07:38against Gilbert Baptist.
07:40Just ahead, Randall Kidd-Yonker takes on veteran two-time world champion Mike McCallum
07:45in a 12-round light heavyweight affair.
07:50Well, as we mentioned earlier,
07:52originally, Jeff Harding was slated to fight number one contender Randall Yonker tonight
07:56for the WBC light heavyweight championship.
07:58But because of a cutover the eyes sustained in training recently,
08:02Harding was forced to step aside,
08:03prompting a late call to 37-year-old two-time world champion Mike, the body snatcher, McCallum.
08:09Ferdie, what are your thoughts on McCallum?
08:12Well, I love Mike McCallum.
08:14Year in and year out, this guy comes in, obliterates the opponent's body.
08:18He's always in some kind of shape,
08:19and he always seems to manage to win.
08:21Now, he's getting very old, long in the tooth.
08:24How he can maintain this attack on a younger and tougher kid,
08:28Yonker, who has no respect for Mike McCallum,
08:30we'll soon see.
08:31If it's the Mike McCallum of old,
08:33then Yonker is going to take some body pain back to Mobile
08:36to remind him of this night.
08:38Bobby, will this change in opponents affect Randall Yonker?
08:41Well, sometimes what happens with a fighter who's trained 10, 12,
08:43maybe 13 weeks for one fighter,
08:45he's setting himself up and conditioning his mind and his body
08:48to address a certain style and strategy.
08:50In a last-minute change and shake-up like this,
08:52sometimes he cannot get his body to react differently,
08:55which he might want it to do.
08:56So this is something that he's going to have to find out early
08:59if he can change up and do what he needs to.
09:00Jeff beat a McCallum as opposed to a Harding,
09:02two very different fighters.
09:04We'll find out shortly if he can make the change.
09:06All right, as we go behind closed doors
09:08into the dressing room of the number one contender,
09:11Randall Yonker,
09:12who suddenly finds himself preparing for a different opponent,
09:15Mike McCallum, rather than Jeff Harding.
09:17We'll soon find out how Yonker handles the change.
09:24Well, you get kind of shocked, you know,
09:26and you visualize yourself fighting one fighter
09:28for the World Championship,
09:29something you've been waiting for for 15 years
09:31and you know he's tailor-made for you.
09:33Well, physically, we're ready for anybody.
09:35Mentally, it's the part that you have to change, you know.
09:38I've watched Mike McCallum,
09:39great 154-pound fighter as a junior middleweight,
09:42he's a great fighter.
09:43He's a light heavyweight now,
09:45and I think he's a light heavyweight
09:46because he's not in shape.
09:47If they think a old man can't win,
09:53I can't do it three times,
09:55well, I'm here to show them.
09:56You know, you get rumors around the gym,
09:58you know, you've been fighting for a long time,
10:03and you're still looking good and still boxing, boxing good.
10:06People tend to, you know, try to push you aside.
10:11So I want to show them that, hey,
10:14AJ is stepping in the ring to fight.
10:17I'm stepping in the ring to fight.
10:18Well, you know, bring it on.
10:20Let's see.
10:21Because I'm strong, I'm young,
10:22my refrigerator's empty,
10:24and I want to fill it up,
10:26and I'm very hungry.
10:27And I'm going to make it very, very difficult for him.
10:30He's a young fighter,
10:31and I'm going to show him that,
10:33I'm going to show him the tools.
10:34I'm going to show him the way around the ring.
10:36I'm going to take him in and out,
10:38and I'm going to take him to the top,
10:39to a level he's never been before.
10:41The better man will win,
10:42and if he's the better man, you know,
10:44I don't think he's going to take me up, down, and around,
10:47you know what I'm saying?
10:48Because he's not going to be there that long.
10:50They feel that youth is a key to this factor,
10:54but I'm going to show them differently.
10:57I'm going to take him to school.
10:58I graduated a couple years ago,
11:01and I'm not going back to school.
11:02Only Rodney Dangerfield went back to school.
11:05I'm not going to school.
11:05I'm the teacher.
11:13And here is 37-year-old Mike McKellum,
11:17born in Kingston, Jamaica,
11:18now residing here in Las Vegas.
11:20He's 45-2-1 with 34 KOs,
11:23a long and prolific career,
11:25former WBA junior middleweight champion
11:27and WBA middleweight champion.
11:29Go to work, Mike.
11:30Go to work.
11:32Here we go.
11:34Go to work.
11:44Go to work.
11:52Go to work.
11:56Come on, Mike.
11:57Come on, man.
12:27Mike McCallum, the body snatcher, McCallum has quietly but effectively become the elder statesman of boxing at thirty seven.
12:45Interestingly, McCallum was scheduled to fight Australian Jeff Harding twice in his career, but both fights fell through.
12:52And now let's take a look at 30 year old Randall Yonker from Mobile, Alabama.
13:00Yonker at twenty nine and two with twenty three knockouts, captured the NAVF super middleweight title in 1990.
13:07But after two successful defenses, he lost the belt in ninety one to Michael Nunn.
13:11Yonker provided a valued effort, but he got KO'd in the tenth.
13:15Yonker, the number one contender.
13:22Yonker!
13:29Jurda, Jurda!
13:33Jurda!
13:41Jurt!
13:46Jurt!
13:47Come on, come on, come on, come on!
14:17Come on, come on.
14:20Come on!
14:28Don't rip me your pillow tonight.
14:31It's this light!
14:34It's the night to beat my hand.
14:41what's your name?
14:45Randall Yonker, who moved up to the light heavyweight division following his loss to Michael Nunn.
14:49He won something called the World Boxing Federation light heavyweight title in 92
14:53and has worked his way up as the WBC's number one light heavyweight contender.
15:00Let's check the numerical breakdown as we go to the tail of the tape.
15:03McCallum at 37, spotting Yonkers seven years.
15:06The height almost even.
15:07Same story for the weight, but a five-inch reach advantage for McCallum.
15:11And the WBC rules for this light heavyweight about scheduled for 12.
15:17The fight with the rules as if it were a championship.
15:20About 10-point must system.
15:21Three judges scoring the fight.
15:22No standing eight count.
15:23No three knockdown rule.
15:25Only the referee can stop it.
15:26And a fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the final round.
15:30So coming up here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.
15:33Breakdown as we go to the tail of the tape.
15:35McCallum at 37, spotting Yonkers seven years.
15:39The height almost even.
15:40Same story for the weight, but a five-inch reach advantage for McCallum.
15:45And the WBC rules for this light heavyweight about scheduled for 12.
15:49The fight with the rules as if it were a championship.
15:52About 10-point must system.
15:53Three judges scoring the fight.
15:55No standing eight count.
15:56No three knockdown rule.
15:57Only the referee can stop it.
15:59And a fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the final round.
16:03So coming up here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.
16:06Randall Yonker versus Mike McCallum.
16:08Set for the introductions.
16:09Let's go up to our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.

16:38At this time, we present one of our featured attractions of the evening.

16:49Introducing to you the judges at ringside appointed for this bout.
16:54Alfred Osaro, Dolby Shirley, and Tomatsu Tomihara.
17:00Presenting the referee in charge to give instructions after the introductions, Joe Cortez.
17:06All right, fans, here we go.
17:10Introducing to you first on my left, fighting out of the blue corner,
17:15he is wearing red trunks with white lettering,
17:18coming from Brooklyn, New York, by way of Kingston, Jamaica.
17:23His weight, 175 pounds, and his record, 45 wins, two losses,
17:30one draw, with 34 wins coming by way of knockout.
17:34Introducing the three-time world champion
17:37and current WBC number two ranked light heavyweight in the world,
17:41please welcome the body snatcher, Mike McHale.
17:51And his opponent across the ring.
17:54On my right, fighting out of the red corner,
17:57he enters the ring wearing black trunks
17:59and fighting out of Mobile, Alabama.
18:03He weighed in at already 174 pounds and his record, 29 wins,
18:10two losses with 23 of his wins coming by way of knockout.
18:14Please welcome the WBC number one ranked light heavyweight contender
18:18known as Kid Galahad.
18:21Introducing, Gratma Younger.
18:25Once again, here's your referee in charge, Joe Cortez,
18:31now to give instructions.
18:34All right, Randall.
18:42All right, Mike.
18:44All right, gentlemen, we went over the rules in the dressing room.
18:46I want a good, clean fight.
18:49Shake hands.
18:50Good luck to both of you.
18:59Randall Younger, who says,
19:00with all the confusion over his opponent,
19:02I got scared.
19:03I thought I was fighting Tonya Harding
19:05instead of Jeff Harding.
19:06Good sense of humor.
19:08Mike McCallum says he plans to win this
19:10for the older generation.
19:12Always an engaging, personable guy.
19:15Here we go.
19:16Round one scheduled for 12.
19:18McCallum, the supposed 37-year-old,
19:21gets a genuine kick out of his elder statesman status.
19:24Sort of the Jack Benny of boxing, I guess you could call him,
19:26because where it is, he is actually closer to 40,
19:29if not beyond 40.
19:32Well, I'll tell you what,
19:33if he's going to win this title for some of the elder statesman,
19:35I've got a funny feeling I apply.
19:37You're only 32.
19:39Mike, he's got a little bit of a spare tire there, Bobby.
19:42He's not in that real razor-sharp shape
19:46that he likes to be in.
19:47So you can see that he took this out of Miami's legs
19:49as he was training,
19:50but maybe not for this level of position.
19:53Yeah, I agree with you, Ferdy.
19:54I think that they told him he was training
19:55for a bout on the undercard here tonight,
19:56but that they were expecting, you know,
19:58an easier fight, something to tune him up
19:59toward a march to a title fight,
20:01and certainly the conditioning factor,
20:03big difference.
20:05Younger told us he thinks McCallum is better
20:07technically, but not condition-wide.
20:09There's a right hand by Mike McCallum.
20:14McCallum, even though he's advancing in years,
20:17says he's still the man tonight.
20:18He wants to be his third world title shot,
20:21but the interim tag has been taken away,
20:23so it's just a regular light heavyweight bout.
20:26McCallum, of course, won titles earlier in his career,
20:29154 and 160.
20:30He weighs 175 tonight.
20:31Look in by McCallum.
20:33Younger said he wanted to apply some pressure early
20:35and test McCallum, make him use a lot of energy
20:38because of his age,
20:39but he's not really forcing the fight right now.
20:41Mike McCallum's taking control,
20:42setting the pace,
20:43and this is Mike McCallum's type of fight.
20:46Yeah, he doesn't do anything better than this.
20:48He's an all-kind-of-prober
20:49because he's letting McCallum punch,
20:51and he's getting through it,
20:52and those punches hurt
20:53when Mike McCallum throws it.
20:55Younger, on his side,
20:56is not doing that.
20:57He's not crushing it.
20:58The opposite of what he said he was going to do.
21:01McCallum's always been a great ring technician
21:02and a good thinker,
21:03and the only thing for Younger to do
21:05is to get him out of that,
21:06not give him that time to set,
21:07think, and work what he wants,
21:08and right now Younger's not doing
21:10what he said he was going to do.
21:11Loves to go to the body relentlessly.
21:13That's the nickname,
21:14Body Snatcher,
21:15and you saw an example of him right there.
21:16Go hold the head down.
21:17Go hold the head down.
21:17Joe Cortez.
21:19Cautioning Randall Younger
21:19not to hold the head down.
21:21Well, that was one of those days
21:22where he got two resounding shots,
21:24one to the body,
21:25one to the end,
21:25and he got warned
21:26for holding one to the head.
21:27Nothing's going his way tonight.
21:30Eddie Foch,
21:31McCallum's octogenarian,
21:32says Mike's legs are still good.
21:35He still has all the skills.
21:37He's still a young man physically,
21:38and he's providing an illustration here
21:40against the Younger Younger.
21:42I can't understand Younger's strategy
21:43other than maybe he's trying to get Mike
21:45to punch himself out a little bit early
21:47and hope that that age will really
21:49kick in somewhere soon,
21:50but he's taking a lot of punishment.
21:53Younger says,
21:53you're not hurting me.
21:55Those shots hurt.
21:57When Mike's talent punches to the body,
21:58they hurt.
21:59And a good countering left hook by Younger.
22:02I'll tell you what,
22:02if he didn't follow it up,
22:03don't let Mike come right back.
22:05He's got to follow it up
22:05when he gets Mike backing up.
22:07And McCallum
22:08with a ferocious attack
22:10for the body of Younger.
22:14A bit of ice on Younger,
22:20I think.
22:21A bit of frozenness.
22:23Let's go to the red corner
22:24and listen to them.
22:25Let's go to the red corner
22:26and listen to them.
22:27The body.
22:28Here,
22:28get the one.
22:28Fuck that, Mike.
22:30Go fight that.
22:30Go fight that, Mike.
22:32Fuck that, man.
22:33Don't get no gas.
22:33Don't get no gas.
22:33Don't get no gas.
22:34They got to cut that shit out.
22:35Get a hell of a...
22:35Go fight that, motherfucker.
22:37Go fight the boy that is dead, man.
22:39Here's his body snatching
22:41they talk about
22:42and nobody in boxing
22:43has ever been better nicknamed
22:45than McCallum.
22:46He knows how to go to that body.
22:47There it is.
22:48There's that shot to the side
22:49and that'll be thumping
22:50in there all night
22:51and that will take the legs
22:52away from young Randall.
22:53Younger,
22:54unless he changes his mind
22:55in the corner there,
22:56you have heard him.
22:57The former champion,
22:58Greg Page,
22:59saying the heck with that.
23:00Go in there and fight him.
23:01He used a little stronger words,
23:02but here you see again,
23:03McCallum's getting to tear him up.
23:05He's measuring him.
23:05He's digging
23:05and this is not Younger's fight.
23:07This is somewhat like
23:08the fight we saw last week
23:10in London
23:10where Wharton came out
23:11and was frozen
23:12for the first couple
23:13and let Ben have his way
23:15before he ever gets started.
23:18So it's round two
23:19scheduled for 12.
23:21Mike McCallum
23:23is having his way in that.
23:25First round,
23:27fighting pro since 1981.
23:30A late fill-in,
23:31but a 9-1 favorite.
23:32Not uncommon in the fight game.
23:35Was on the card originally,
23:36but not to fight Younger.
23:39Younger told me yesterday
23:40when we interviewed him,
23:41he said a lot of people
23:42have compared him to me
23:43and the way he fights
23:44and I'd like him
23:45to do a little more offensively
23:46if he wants to keep
23:47that comparison intact.
23:49Well, I don't see anything
23:50to compare you to.
23:51From what I see,
23:52I don't see any comparisons.
23:54I'll take that
23:55as a compliment, Ferdy.
23:55It is a compliment,
23:56but it's a realistic one.
24:00Nice body shot.
24:03Bobby, if he does that
24:03two or three times,
24:04he's going to get
24:05his head taken off.
24:05It was a nice body shot,
24:07but he let it hang.
24:10You know what?
24:11I may be out of line,
24:12but Younger's looking
24:14a little bit tired
24:14and he's just loading up
24:16on one big shot.
24:17Maybe some of those body shots
24:18took a little more steam
24:19out of him in the first round
24:19than he anticipated it could.
24:21Well, certainly,
24:22it's a mistake
24:23to sit in the corner
24:23and let McCallum
24:25get off with his old legs.
24:26That's what he wants.
24:26He doesn't want to dance
24:27all the way to play.
24:28He wants you to sit still
24:29and let him hit you.
24:30He'll hit you all night long.
24:31McCallum with that
24:35shotgun jab.
24:38Uppercut.
24:39Answered by
24:39Rejo Yonker,
24:40but it's one and done
24:41for Yonker.
24:42You see how casually
24:43he puts in that jab
24:44to the midsection?
24:46Not many people
24:47can jab to the midsection
24:48that casually
24:49and still be effective.
24:51And he just does it
24:51like he's,
24:52oh, here's nothing,
24:53bopping.
24:53There it is,
24:53right in the stomach.
24:54What Yonker's doing, too,
24:55he's letting McCallum
24:56maximize his efficiency
24:57with that reach advantage.
24:59He's not cutting off,
25:00cutting in,
25:00stepping to the side,
25:01working around any of it,
25:02or coming up through the middle.
25:03He's just letting himself
25:04be tagged with that jab
25:06time and time again.
25:07How often we see guys
25:08stand right in front of him
25:10and not give angles to him.
25:11Not let,
25:12here he's standing
25:12for one of the most
25:13dangerous body punches
25:14in boxing,
25:15and he's letting him
25:15punch there.
25:17The experienced Mike McCallum
25:19only losses
25:20to Symbol Conlevey
25:21at 88,
25:22James Toney at 92.
25:23He's struggled
25:24to keep his weight
25:25down recently,
25:26so he's happy
25:26to be at light heavyweight
25:27now,
25:28175.
25:31Working the jab,
25:32looking to set up
25:33the right,
25:33and there it is,
25:34McCallum.
25:34And, you know,
25:35if Yonker's gonna press
25:36Mike and test his age,
25:37and we all know
25:38that Mike is somewhere
25:38between 37 and 137,
25:41because sometimes
25:42people tell me
25:43they know when he's young,
25:44he's 42,
25:45he's 43,
25:46he's 41.
25:46It doesn't matter.
25:48He's fighting
25:48like a young crow,
25:49and he's doing the job,
25:50and Yonker's not
25:51pressing him and pushing him
25:52intense that age.
25:54Well, that's what
25:55Eddie Puck says.
25:56He says he still has the legs,
25:57he's still a young man physically.
25:59He does show a little pudge
26:00around the stomach, though.
26:04Final seconds of round two.
26:08There's no pudge
26:09in the punches
26:09of Mike McCallum.
26:10He's crisp,
26:11they're right on the money,
26:12and he's doing
26:13what he wants to do.
26:13Championship fight
26:20coming up here
26:21at the MGM Grand
26:22in Las Vegas.
26:23It'll be the
26:23WBC Middleweight Championship
26:25featuring
26:26this young man,
26:27Gerald McClellan,
26:29who's fighting out of Detroit,
26:30originally from
26:31Freeport, Illinois.
26:33A member of the famous
26:34cronk team
26:34of Emanuel Stewart.
26:35He'll be taking on
26:36Gilbert Baptist.
26:37That's coming up
26:38later
26:39on this edition
26:40of Showtime
26:41Championship Boxing.
26:49So here
26:50at the house
26:51that Barbara Streisand
26:52built,
26:53the highly publicized
26:54New Year's concert.
26:56Here's McKellen.
26:57You put him right in the corner,
26:58then you let him
26:58walk right out of the corner.
26:59All right.
27:00Okay?
27:01Keep it personal.
27:03All right.
27:05Come on,
27:05let him go now.
27:06Don't let him in.
27:07Don't let him in.
27:08Come on.
27:09Okay.
27:11And it is round
27:16number three.
27:18A lot of experience
27:19in that McCallum corner.
27:21And let me tell you,
27:22the venerable
27:22Eddie Foots,
27:23one of the most
27:24respected men in boxing
27:25and certainly
27:26one of the classiest
27:27all of the time.
27:29As a young man,
27:30he looks classy.
27:31As an old man,
27:31he's super classy.
27:32And you'll notice
27:33the drastic contrast
27:35to the corners.
27:36Much like my corner,
27:36Tommy Parks,
27:37very calm,
27:38quiet,
27:39specifically controlled.
27:40The other corner,
27:41one guy's yelling one thing,
27:42the other guy's saying,
27:43don't worry about that.
27:44Well,
27:44Greg Cade,
27:45the heavyweight
27:46in the corner,
27:46Randy Yonker,
27:47very vocal and animated.
27:48That's because
27:49he's never worked corners
27:50and that's,
27:51it doesn't help
27:52it to have an ex-fighter
27:53or a fighter in a corner
27:54if he doesn't train
27:55and doesn't know
27:55how to train.
27:57Let him out clear.
27:57I think the word
27:59that describes
27:59the difference
28:00between those two corners
28:00is professional.
28:02Eddie is a professional
28:04and commands respect
28:05in the corner.
28:08Randall Yonker
28:09taking some punishment
28:10here.
28:10Good combination
28:11by McCown.
28:12Joe Cortez.
28:16Again cautioning
28:17with Randall Yonker.
28:19Joe Cortez
28:20doing a good job.
28:21He doesn't have
28:21much of a job
28:22to do here.
28:23It's all Yonker
28:24holding the head
28:24or trying to hit
28:25a little bit low.
28:28Cortez doing a good job.
28:29He's staying out
28:29of the way
28:29and letting him play.
28:30He's an old throw.
28:32Many championship fights.
28:34Now Yonker
28:34coming alive.
28:38An awful lot
28:39of low blows here.
28:41They just exchanged
28:42low blows.
28:42Cortez didn't say
28:43anything to either one.
28:44They sort of
28:44evened up.
28:46Randall Yonker
28:47was stopped
28:47on the 10th
28:48by Michael Nunn.
28:49Yonker tells us
28:50he went to school
28:51against Nunn.
28:52Had to deal
28:52with the speed
28:53of Nunn.
28:54So he says
28:54I'm ready for anything.
28:55Really nifty jab
28:56there.
28:57By McCallum
28:58then he goes
28:58to the body
28:59with the right.
28:59And then he ducks
29:00under a punch.
29:01I mean how much
29:01better can you be
29:02than that?
29:03He didn't duck
29:04under that one.
29:05Yonker's at the top
29:06of his head
29:06with a good hook.
29:08Yonker told us
29:09the next fight
29:10after he lost to Nunn
29:11he avenged a loss
29:12to Paul Moyoti
29:13so he said
29:13he didn't lose
29:14any confidence.
29:15He is a confident
29:15young man.
29:16Short left hand there
29:17by Randall Yonker.
29:19Maybe starting
29:20to get a little
29:20unfrozen now.
29:21Yeah he is.
29:22He is.
29:22Now there
29:23the first
29:24good combinations
29:25by Randall Yonker.
29:27First good
29:27solid combinations.
29:29And Yonker
29:29continues to impress
29:31here in round three.
29:32He's got to get mad.
29:33He's got to get
29:33into this fight.
29:34He gave him
29:35too much respect
29:35those first two rounds.
29:36Blew him.
29:37Oh nice right hand
29:39by McCallum.
29:39Oh nice right hand
29:40by McCallum.
29:42He followed it up
29:43with a vicious right hand.
29:44Now an uppercut
29:45by McCallum.
29:47Give me a clean round.
29:48Clean round guys.
29:49Give me a clean round
29:50says Joe Cortez.
29:56Oh good hook.
29:57Thumping left hook
29:58by Randall Yonker.
29:59And a thumping hook
30:00back by Mike McCallum.
30:01Come on guys.
30:02Come on.
30:02Come on.
30:03You guys are giving
30:04us a very good round
30:05here.
30:05Both fighters
30:06giving it their all
30:07this round.
30:09Final seconds
30:10round three.
30:12Terrific exchanges
30:13here in La Coole.
30:26They keep backing him
30:28up.
30:28Don't let him
30:29tell you.
30:29Yeah.
30:30When he tells you
30:31he gets shots off.
30:33You watch it good.
30:35You watch it good.
30:39Keep baiting that
30:40dab.
30:40Sticking that dab.
30:41Packing him up.
30:41Keep taking up
30:42the slack.
30:42Let's watch Yonker
30:43when he finally gets
30:44unfrozen here and he
30:46starts to punch.
30:46Look at this
30:46combination he's
30:47putting together.
30:48Those are hard
30:48punches.
30:49They're well directed
30:50and they landed well.
30:51He did that several
30:51times in that round.
30:52He almost pulled
30:53that round out.
30:54But McCallum comes
30:55back.
30:55Look at this workman
30:56like right hand
30:57right above it.
30:58Another one right
30:59above it.
31:00That was high on the
31:00forehead.
31:01Had that landed right
31:02it might have had
31:02another effect.
31:03You can't say enough
31:04about the way
31:05McCallum is fighting.
31:06And right now
31:08Randall Yonker is
31:09coming back to make a
31:10fight.
31:10That was almost an
31:11even round.
31:11Round four.
31:16Light heavyweight
31:16scheduled for 12.
31:19Originally Yonker was
31:20to face Australian
31:21Jeff Harding for the
31:23light heavyweight
31:23championship but Harding
31:25had to drop out
31:25because of a couple
31:26to the eye during
31:27training.
31:30So now Yonker has
31:31to answer the 37
31:32year old veteran
31:33Mike McCallum
31:34former two-time
31:35world champion.
31:37Can you imagine
31:38Mike McCallum is a
31:39substitute for Harding?
31:40I mean I'd rather have
31:41Harding and fight for
31:42the title and here
31:43instead you've got a
31:44really tough old pro
31:46hard to beat and
31:47nothing at stake.
31:49Yeah Yonker said I
31:49trained for a tough
31:50durable fight for
31:51Jeff Harding so he
31:53says I'm ready for
31:54Mike McCallum as a
31:55result.
31:56Good counter.
31:57Left hook there by
31:58Randall Yonker.
32:00Randall starting to
32:01use his speed as a
32:02younger man he should
32:03have better reflexes
32:04and faster speed.
32:05He just showed it
32:05then with a hook.
32:07But basically what
32:08Eddie Fite said is
32:09right.
32:09As long as you got
32:10him going back he's
32:11not punch him he
32:12starts coming forward
32:13he gets brave on
32:14you so it's back to
32:17you first.
32:19It was mostly it got
32:21all him accountable
32:22with the first two
32:22then Yonker answered
32:24back in the third
32:25terrific third round
32:26and now quite even
32:28here in the fourth.
32:34Almost a low blow
32:35but Yonker right on
32:37the waistband.
32:38And you can see
32:38exactly Eddie Fite's
32:40wisdom.
32:40He said as long as
32:41you're punching and
32:41coming forward
32:42Randall is not
32:43punching he's
32:44covering up.
32:44You just saw a perfect
32:46example of that for
32:47about 30 seconds.
32:48Now here is a warning
32:4930 points will be
32:51taken away he said.
32:53Joe Cortez if you keep
32:55on holding and if you
32:56keep on hitting low
32:57we will take points
32:58away.
32:58That was a low blow
32:59inflicted by
33:00McCallum.
33:00I think both men
33:03are hitting low
33:03because they're
33:04punching to the body
33:05Steve.
33:06Both have been
33:07guilty of that
33:08penalty and now
33:09Joe Cortez is
33:09beginning to lose
33:10patience.
33:15Nice maneuvering
33:16over there by
33:16Yonker to elude
33:17Mike McCallum.
33:19Look at these
33:20stretches of time
33:21where Yonker doesn't
33:22throw anything
33:22because McCallum
33:25is throwing something
33:26exactly what Eddie
33:27Fudge said.
33:28That's wisdom in
33:30the corner.
33:32Over 100 years of
33:33experiences between
33:34the two.
33:35And they got
33:35Edwin Lewis who's
33:36was an excellent
33:38fighter and has been
33:39an excellent corner
33:39man for many years
33:40now.
33:41They got a lot of
33:41wisdom and calmness.
33:43Blood from the left
33:43nostril of Randall
33:44Yonker.
33:48Again McCallum
33:49lining Yonker up
33:50looking for the body.
33:52He's calm though.
33:53He's not rushing in
33:54there.
33:54He wants to get that
33:55body and he wants
33:56to go to the head
33:57if he can.
33:58Yeah just for good
33:59measure.
33:59Nice uppercut by
34:00McCallum.
34:02Oh nice low blow
34:03by Randall.
34:07Under 10 seconds.
34:09Round 4.
34:12Big points for Mike
34:14McCallum.
34:17So round 4 is in the
34:19books here at the
34:19MGM Grand.
34:20Let's go over to
34:21Bobby Chess
34:22standing by.
34:23Bobby.
34:24Thank you Steve.
34:25We're here with Rick
34:26Ruvus the undisputed
34:27light heavyweight
34:27kickboxing champion
34:28and different type of
34:29fight here tonight.
34:30You're not, no one's
34:31using their feet.
34:31What brings you to a
34:32fight like this?
34:33Well I'm here to talk
34:34about the biggest fight
34:35in the sports history
34:36of kickboxing.
34:37PKA Karate Mania
34:38March 26th live
34:39pay per view.
34:40Well that's a no,
34:41we know that's on
34:42Showtime on March 26th.
34:43Showtime event television
34:44I stand corrected.
34:45And John E.
34:46Dave Terrio, a formidable
34:47opponent.
34:48What can we expect from
34:49you there?
34:49Well, I want the
34:51kickboxing world and all
34:53the fight fans to know
34:53that it's my time.
34:55It's in with the jet age,
34:55out with the ice age.
34:56It's time for the ice man
34:58to be dethroned.
34:59It's time for the ice to
35:00melt and I'm the man to
35:02do it.
35:02What about regular boxing?
35:03I know my dad did some
35:04kickboxing and karate but
35:05I chose to do this.
35:07I was more comfortable
35:07without kicking.
35:08What made you lean
35:09toward kickboxing?
35:10Well four limbs are
35:11better than two.
35:12I always got a big thrill
35:13of being able to get up
35:14and kick a guy in the
35:14head with a full force
35:15kick.
35:16All right.
35:16Thank you very much,
35:17Rick.
35:17We'll go back to
35:18ringside and Steve
35:19Albert and Bernie
35:19Pacheco.
35:20All right.
35:20Thanks very much,
35:21Bobby.
35:21As we enter round five,
35:23scheduled for 12.
35:24Randall Yonker.
35:25Oh, what a left reply
35:26by McCallum.
35:28And McCallum all over
35:30Yonker.
35:31Swarming.
35:32But Yonker able to
35:34spin out of trouble.
35:39Yonker must have been
35:40given heck in the corner
35:41because he came out
35:42fighting and he had to
35:43because they've got to
35:44tell him exactly what
35:45Eddie Pache said in the
35:46other corner.
35:47You have got to be
35:48first or this guy's
35:49going to eat you up
35:50because McCallum has
35:51no mercy.
35:53He will come right
35:54after big points at the
35:56end of that round when
35:57he cornered Randall
35:58Yonker and pummeled
35:59him in the corner.
36:01Mike McCallum,
36:0245,
36:03two and one with
36:0434 knockouts.
36:05Randall Yonker,
36:0629 and two with
36:0823 knockouts.
36:09Yonker out of
36:10Mobile,
36:10Alabama.
36:10McCallum,
36:12Brooklyn,
36:13Kingston,
36:14Jamaica.
36:15He's been all over.
36:19McCallum is wearing
36:20out.
36:21Well,
36:22I'm sorry,
36:22McCallum is wearing
36:23out.
36:24Well,
36:24I'll tell you,
36:26age is being tested
36:28here,
36:28but it's a young age
36:29that's being tested.
36:30I'm happy to be back
36:31with you,
36:31fellas.
36:34No,
36:34I didn't get kicked,
36:35but I missed what I
36:36understand with two
36:36very exciting rounds.
36:37And well,
36:38I'll tell you,
36:39from back where I was,
36:40I could hear the crowd
36:41going crazy.
36:42And by the looks of
36:42your scorecard,
36:43it's been all McCallum.
36:44Yeah,
36:44it has been all McCallum.
36:45And look at it.
36:46Oh,
36:46almost down goes
36:48Yonker.
36:49I don't know what
36:49helped him out.
36:51I don't know how
36:52he stayed up.
36:53He's staying up on
36:53just hard right now
36:54because he is in
36:55big trouble.
36:56I think he got his
36:56nose broken.
36:58Tremendous fortitude
36:59by Randall Yonker
37:00who buckled over,
37:02was ready to take
37:04the plunge
37:04and hung in there.
37:06It was a vicious
37:07left uppercut
37:08and there's no
37:08quitting Yonker.
37:09He is still
37:10swinging and trying.
37:12Mike McCallum
37:13trying to finish
37:14Yonker up here
37:15at round five.
37:16Just in a minute
37:17to go.
37:19Amazing courage
37:20by Yonker.
37:22He wiped him
37:23down.
37:27He started.
37:28It was the body.
37:29He got his body
37:31snatched.
37:32That was the
37:33body snatcher
37:34putt.
37:35One putt.
37:36Put him down
37:36like that.
37:37How do you feel?
37:38Get up on him.
37:38Get up on him.
37:39How do you feel?
37:40Do I continue?
37:41Come over here.
37:42Get up on him.
37:43Get up on him.
37:44Get up on him.
37:44Can I continue?
37:45Come here.
37:46Joe Cortez
37:47giving in a lot
37:48of time.
37:49He must be very
37:50kind to Randall
37:52Yonker who is
37:53right on the verge
37:53of going.
37:54Can Yonker survive
37:55in this fifth round.
37:56What a tribulation
37:57of punches.
37:58Yonker came back
37:59with it up.
37:59Back comes McKellar.
38:01Back comes Yonker.
38:02And now Yonker
38:02in trouble again.
38:06And Joe Cortez
38:07has to throw him
38:07away.
38:08And he stops
38:09the fight.
38:10It's all over.
38:11Mike McKellar
38:12with an awesome
38:13display here
38:15in the fifth round.
38:16Well stuck.
38:17He had no business
38:18letting that continue
38:19and he is well.
38:20Even now he's
38:21stumbling forth
38:21Randall Yonker.
38:23The punishment
38:23Bobby was severe
38:24on the ropes.
38:25Well you know
38:25he's just a
38:26masterful fighter.
38:27He's just a superior
38:28talent.
38:29He has the age
38:29and experience
38:30in his corner
38:30and the age here
38:31didn't hurt him
38:32not a bit.
38:33But you know
38:33what hurt?
38:34Experience hurt.
38:35His experience
38:36was so superior
38:37to Yonker
38:37he just didn't
38:38know how to
38:39handle all that
38:40was coming at him.
38:40Randall Yonker
38:41showed me a great
38:42heart and he
38:42showed me a
38:43Bobby Chez
38:44like chin.
38:44But I'll tell you
38:45I expected a little
38:46more from him.
38:47He was talking
38:47a very good game
38:49in the dressing room
38:50and also yesterday
38:50during the interviews.
38:51I really expected
38:52more out of him.
38:53A little more pressure
38:53a little more movement
38:54better jab and I
38:55was a little
38:56disappointed in him.
38:56I'm sure he is
38:57but he took an
38:58awful lot of
38:59punishment.
38:59Hey Bobby he was
39:00in there with a
39:00Rolls Royce.
39:01That man is the
39:03quality of boxing
39:04has been for years
39:05Mike McCallum.
39:06I mean and he's
39:07got a quality
39:07corner.
39:08It just shows
39:09when all those
39:10pros get together
39:11it's hard to beat
39:12a guy like Mike
39:13McCallum.
39:13Even old and even
39:15a little heavy as
39:15he is now.
39:16You don't become
39:17a three time world
39:18champion because
39:18you're average.
39:19You got it.
39:20McCallum with a
39:21barrage putting this
39:22man away.
39:23Yonkers nose was
39:24bloodied at 115 of
39:26the fifth.
39:26He was stunned at
39:27135.
39:28He went down at
39:29213 and it was
39:31stopped at 255
39:33unofficially here in
39:34round number five.
39:35We'll get the
39:36official word from
39:37Jimmy Lennon Jr.
39:38momentarily but
39:39what a ferocious
39:42attack by the
39:44body snatcher Mr.
39:46Mike McCallum.
39:47Hugs all around in
39:50McCallum's corner.
39:51I told you I'm not
39:52too loud about him.
39:54His first fight of
39:541994.
39:56You made it real
39:57easy.
39:58With any foot.
39:59Don't punch him too
39:59hard.
39:59You made it real easy.
40:00Mike.
40:01You made it real easy.
40:01A big hug for Joe
40:04Cortez.
40:04Let's get the
40:05official announcement
40:06right now from
40:06Jimmy Lennon Jr.
40:12Ladies and gentlemen
40:14we have the time of
40:15two minutes 55 seconds
40:18in round number five.
40:20The referee in charge
40:21Joe Cortez stops the
40:22contest winner by way
40:24of technical knockout
40:26the body snatcher
40:28Mike McCallum.
40:38Bobby let's take a
40:39look at where
40:40McCallum got Yonker in
40:42trouble at the
40:43beginning of the
40:43round.
40:44That's the beginning
40:45of the round and
40:45Yonker again to his
40:46credit is trying but
40:47it's just too there's
40:48a big left hook
40:49counter there's too
40:50much skill too much
40:50artillery in McCallum's
40:52arsenal.
40:53He backs him up to
40:54the ropes and he hits
40:54him with a left
40:55uppercut.
40:55It's coming up
40:56shortly and it just
40:57really stuns it and
40:59it starts to become
41:00the beginning of the
41:00end.
41:01We didn't get it on
41:02that shot.
41:02There was a shot
41:03where he pushed it
41:04in.
41:06As it's a little
41:06later on and around
41:07and certainly in the
41:08same combination
41:09right on the nose
41:10that's where a lot of
41:11the blood came from
41:12that's what shocked
41:13him so badly almost
41:14brought him to his
41:15knees even though
41:16again he's still
41:16trying he's still
41:17trying to whip that
41:18look left hook in
41:18but Yonker just
41:20doesn't have the
41:20tools.
41:23In the knockdown
41:24the mark of a great
41:25professional and a
41:26great champion he's
41:26got him hurt to the
41:27head he doesn't forget
41:28the body he slips that
41:29left hook under bang
41:30there goes all the air
41:32in his body and that
41:33is a very debilitating
41:34and terrible feeling I
41:36can tell you from
41:36experience.
41:37Thousands of fans here
41:38at the MGM Grand in
41:39Las Vegas just astounded
41:40amazed that Yonker did
41:43not fold to the canvas
41:45with that first shot by
41:47Mike McCallum.
41:47Incredibly he stayed up
41:52but a TKO 255 of round
41:54number five.
41:55Coming up next here at
41:56the MGM Grand in Las
41:57Vegas our main event the
41:59WBC middleweight
42:00championship knockout
42:02artist Gerald McClellan
42:04defending his title
42:05against veteran Gilbert
42:06Baptist.
42:07There's your fight
42:08ticket for the fight
42:10coming up later.
42:11Right now though we are
42:12set for post fight
42:13interviews from our last
42:14bout so let's go up to
42:15the fight doctor Ferdy
42:17Pacheco.
42:17Ferdy.
42:18All right it's the body
42:19snatcher they called you
42:20that first knockdown was
42:21pure body.
42:22I'm back baby.
42:23I wanted to know
42:24where you're going
42:24someplace?
42:26It's a new body snatcher
42:27they haven't seen me for
42:28a while.
42:29Ironically after the
42:30Tony fight they think
42:31that Mike is over.
42:32They said I'm 50.
42:35You're not.
42:36I'm always Mr. Fudge
42:37the genius over here.
42:39But it's all right we're
42:39still taking him boss.
42:41All right in the corner
42:42we heard you and we gave
42:43you full credit.
42:44You got to get to this
42:45guy you can't let him
42:46come forward.
42:47He did exactly what you
42:48told him.
42:49Now isn't that the essence
42:50of championship fighting?
42:51That is.
42:51That is.
42:52He always has been the
42:54one to follow instructions
42:55and tonight he did it
42:57with finesse.
42:59Did you expect that
43:00fine a performance?
43:01After all as he said
43:02he's been away.
43:03He looked like a little
43:04bit heavy and God knows
43:05how old he is yet he
43:07fought like a young man
43:08and he fought with
43:10perfect in following your
43:11instructions.
43:12Were you surprised?
43:12No I wasn't surprised
43:13because he's been doing
43:14it in the gym daily.
43:16Yeah.
43:16He's been doing it.
43:17You have your ups and
43:19downs and you're always
43:19coming back to the
43:20championship.
43:21You think you're back
43:21for another championship
43:22Mike?
43:23Oh yeah I'm back for a
43:24long time.
43:25I tell him before that
43:26this is my dream to be
43:27three time champion and
43:29the broth or whatever go
43:30along with that.
43:30And tonight.
43:31Let's take a look.
43:33Let's take a look if we
43:34can in our monitor here at
43:37this awesome display of
43:39punching power.
43:39Now you see that uppercut
43:41there?
43:42It was a beautiful
43:42uppercut.
43:43We worked in the gym a
43:44lot.
43:45See most guys when you
43:46go to the head, they
43:47look to the head, they
43:48always come down.
43:49See you always go to
43:50uppercut and then you
43:50go back to the bottom.
43:52And this is the end of
43:54the fight which I think
43:54was well stuck.
43:55Oh yeah he was crying for
43:57Mr. Artis to stop the
43:59fight because when I hit
44:00him with the first body
44:00I started crying.
44:01Oh!
44:02Oh!
44:03So I said well I know
44:04the end is soon come.
44:06In Jamaica we say end
44:09soon come.
44:11The end soon come.
44:13Alright well you had a
44:14very nice night and
44:15always nice to see you
44:17Eddie Futsch and
44:18Hedgman Lewis let me
44:20acknowledge you.
44:20I'd like to say hello
44:21to my friends in New
44:22York and of course my
44:23home people Jamaica and
44:24Michael Manley and all
44:25the people in Jamaica.
44:27Mike McCollum is back.
44:28Three time champ.
44:29I've got to give you a
44:29body shot and get out of
44:30here.
44:30Back to Steve.
44:32Alright Ferdy and the
44:33end soon came for
44:35Randall Yonker courtesy of
44:37the body snatcher Mike
44:39McCallum.
44:42So here at the MGM Grand
44:43Garden in Las Vegas I'm
44:44with two time world
44:46champion Bobby Chez and
44:47Bobby little bonus here
44:49let's take a look at the
44:50end of the fight once
44:51again.
44:51Round number five Mike
44:52McCallum in the red
44:53trunks Randall Yonker in
44:54the black trunks the
44:55onslaught begins.
44:56Well you know after the
44:57first four rounds McCallum
44:58had established what he
44:59wanted to and Yonker came
45:01out trying to wing in some
45:02punches but the experience
45:03of McCallum was just too
45:04much.
45:05You watch it again he's
45:06got him on the ropes and
45:07as Mike just said when he
45:09gets his back on the ropes
45:10he doesn't just throw
45:11hooks.
45:12He rips some uppercuts
45:13inside.
45:14Excuse me.
45:15And it's that one uppercut
45:17that does just about
45:19everything to start the
45:20beginning of the entire
45:20end for Yonker.
45:23Was it that much of a
45:24difference in preparation
45:25for Jeff Harding as
45:27opposed to this man Mike
45:28McCallum for Randall
45:29Yonker?
45:30As far as experience and
45:31strategy wise I think
45:33absolutely I think Randall
45:34Yonker trains for Harding
45:35trains for a different
45:36fight.
45:36He trains for a fight that
45:38McCallum can only give you
45:40more trouble than a Jeff
45:42Harding.
45:42Jeff Harding could not give
45:43Randall Yonker the same
45:44looks the same experience
45:46the same body snatching
45:47power.
45:48Something that Harding does
45:49do.
45:50He's younger.
45:50He's you know he has a
45:51tremendous amount of
45:52endurance and he gives a
45:53great pace but that's a
45:54different training
45:54technique.
45:55You train differently for
45:56that type of fight.
45:59And indeed he may have
46:00felt as if he were fighting
46:02Tonya Harding right here.
46:04I'll tell you what Tonya
46:05Harding and company would
46:06have needed a couple of
46:07extra clubs to beat Mike
46:08McCallum.
46:10Well this was certainly no
46:11club fight here at the MGM
46:13as two-time world champion
46:15Mike McCallum poured it on
46:17against Randall Yonker here
46:19in round number five looking
46:20to end it.
46:21Oh there's the area we
46:23thought Yonker was going
46:24down but the ropes helped
46:26him a little bit but his
46:27heart helped him a lot.
46:28He was practically lifted
46:29off the ground.
46:30Mike used great leverage
46:31bent with his knees leaned
46:31over and drilled that up
46:33and he caught Yonker face
46:35down lifted him practically
46:36I think it may have broken
46:37his nose because the blood
46:38really started to pour then
46:40and like I said I think
46:41that was the beginning of
46:42the end and as a mark of
46:43the good champion you'll
46:44see in a little while he
46:45digs one to the body which
46:46basically says okay that's
46:48all there's left in his body
46:49it's over for Yonker.
46:51Randall Yonker taking much
46:54punishment here look at Joe
46:55Cortez very close to the
46:57action.
46:57See that was a deceptive
46:58punch too it was a big
46:59right uppercut to the solar
47:00plexus and he buckled
47:01over and now that is like
47:03the coup de grace that's an
47:04execution right there.
47:06He was rocked right to the
47:09stomach you could see the
47:11expression oh to the face
47:13of Randall Yonker.
47:14We always have a saying in
47:15the gym when you get hit
47:16with a good perfectly placed
47:17body shot all the air
47:19immediately leaves your
47:19body at once.
47:20And so does the strength.
47:22It is very debilitating.
47:24You feel like a man on an
47:25island with no ships around.
47:26Yes.
47:29Well Mike McCallum continues to
47:30snatch the body of Randall
47:33Yonker trying his best at
47:35fighting back here.
47:36Really showing a lot of guts
47:37but just not enough.
47:38See it was just so accurate
47:39too.
47:40Steve all the shots landed and
47:41they found their mark and
47:43that you can't absorb that
47:44type of punishment no matter
47:45how old the fighter is and
47:48still expect to win.
47:49Now there was at 255 up
47:51round number five the 37
47:53year old Mike McCallum.
47:55We think he's 37.
