00:00:05hbo sports presents world championship boxing first number one right contender mike mccallum
00:00:15faces the number two ranked challenger sean manion for the vacant wba junior middleweight title
00:00:20then time permitting we'll show you highlights of the pro debut of olympic gold medalist steve
00:00:25mccrory as he took on jeff hannah in a bantamweight contest and then the main event the undisputed
00:00:31middleweight champion of the world marvelous marvin haggler takes on number one contender
00:00:35mustafa ham show in a scheduled 15 round title fight there is indeed a special feeling here
00:00:41history of champions past is as much a part of madison square garden as the ring itself the garden
00:00:48has seen them all and there simply isn't an arena that manages to recall its past like madison square
00:00:54garden new york hello everybody i'm barry tomkins we got an awful lot of boxing to talk about and i've
00:01:02got an all-star cast to talk about it with you and with me the champ sugar ray leonard first of all
00:01:07let's talk about marvelous marvin haggler and mustafa ham show it's a rematch you've been through rematches
00:01:13are they difficult and what can we look for in this one very difficult barry in fact it may be a replay
00:01:18with ham show i've been i heard that he's gonna change his style i'm interested to see how he's gonna
00:01:22change it he should do what he does best fight haggler inside but he needs to be elusive and not a
00:01:28stationary target well also with us as always our own sage larry merchant larry let's talk about
00:01:33this fight and particularly let's talk about mustafa ham show are we going to see a new one and if so
00:01:38what is he going to have to do mustafa ham show is very strong he's highly motivated he's got the
00:01:45hometown crowd he wants to win a championship if marvin haggler has lost a little bit on his fastball
00:01:53who knows what could happen but this is marvin haggler's debut at madison square garden and we
00:01:58can count on him giving the best of him as always and let's remember that original flight in chicago was a
00:02:06massacre ham show walked into haggler like a condemned man walking into a firing squad he has to modify his style
00:02:14so he can dodge some of those bullets well is marvin haggler invincible that's the question
00:02:18everybody's been asking if you ask a lot of people let's say yes he's invincible if you ask marvelous
00:02:23marvin haggler he says no nobody's invincible well before we get to that main event we've got another
00:02:28championship fight to talk about between mike mccallum a guy you probably haven't seen until now
00:02:33but you may see an awful lot of from this point on he'll be fighting a guy by the name of sean manion
00:02:38for the junior middleweight championship of the wba so who are these two pretenders to a championship
00:02:45well one comes by way of island to boston the other comes by way of jamaica to jamaica queens
00:02:54on june 15 1984 in las vegas nevada roberto duran challenged tommy hearns for his wbc
00:03:01super welterweight title the hands of stone had entered the ring already stripped of his junior
00:03:06middleweight crown and after two rounds he fell to defeat that set the stage for tonight's battle
00:03:12between boston's number two ranked sean manion and his opponent jamaican born number one ranked
00:03:19mike the body snatcher mccallum by the end of the 15 rounds one of these combatants will emerge
00:03:25as the new junior middleweight champion
00:03:43against tony suero in april of 83 mccallum demonstrated his crisp precise punching power
00:03:49and combinations that kept coming suero was to become the 18th victim of mccallum's professional
00:03:54career the body snatcher after only three rounds had grabbed another one
00:04:15four months after the suero fight mccallum put his technique to work again this time against jose
00:04:19vallejo the confrontation lasted only five rounds and mike mccallum had racked up ko number 17.
00:04:27determined to remain undefeated mccallum faced hasim raza in march after only one round it was over
00:04:33and mccallum earned the right to fight for the unclaimed title
00:04:52mike this is sort of the end of the rainbow for you now it's a fight you've been waiting for for a long
00:04:56time yes it has been a long while i've been number one contender for about a year and uh three months
00:05:03something to that effect and uh it's been a long time you know like you said about time in my way
00:05:09mike what do you know about the guy that you're fighting here we know he's tough and he's trained
00:05:12he says more this time than he ever has well i'd expect that i mean it's a championship fight this is
00:05:18his lifetime it's his dream also i've trained this time more than ever trained before also and uh sean is
00:05:25uh the kind of fighter that he bores if you don't go right ahead and get it get out of the way
00:05:33it would be a dull fight because he tried to pick pick a move and cover up and stay in the corner and
00:05:39move move and you know that kind of thing so uh i got my strategy for sean i like i say i had a fight
00:05:46fight about 50 times already in my mind so i'm just going to go there and take care of business
00:05:53awaiting the challenge of mike mccallum is a native-born irishman by the name of sean manion
00:06:14sean manion
00:06:16he was ranked number one in the world when he faced sean mann
00:06:46manion in may of 83 the south bot smarted and outpointed the korean and took the decision
00:06:51along with bakes world rating
00:06:55when manion faced roosevelt green in february of 1984
00:06:59he displayed more punching power than ever before this seven round knockout gave proof that sean mannion
00:07:16have you fought this fight in your own mind already yeah i fought this fight about a year ago and how
00:07:31do you see it i see uh i'm coming out with the victory i've waited for so long for it you know
00:07:37and at last it's here only a few hours away and uh i'm gonna make the best of it i'm in great shape
00:07:43i train real hard how do you account for people saying well he's never seen anybody like mccallum
00:07:50that the caliber of fighter that you have fought is not like the guy you're going to fight tomorrow night
00:07:54yeah well um i'm thinking the same thing about mccallum who was he fought i think in the same way about him
00:07:59i fought four or five guys in the top ten and um i beat them all and um i'm sure i'm gonna give
00:08:06mike mccallum a real surprise so you've heard from both the participants here's a good look at sean
00:08:13mannion he is the number two ranked as you see wba junior middleweight contender he's a guy who
00:08:18mike mccallum is not going to have to look for we know that for a fact well he's a brawler in fact
00:08:23he will be the he will be in a fight the whole time mccallum is a guy who throws a lot of punches
00:08:27and combinations he of course had a lot of work at the cronk gym with emmanuel stewart however
00:08:32there have been some problems on the managerial scene which we'll expound on a little bit more as time
00:08:36goes on in his corner now not emmanuel stewart but dan duva here's a look at the tail of the tape
00:08:41and as you can see mccallum has about three inches in height and that could be a factor in this fight
00:08:45i'd have to think larry well it depends how you use your height there have been some tall fighters
00:08:50that haven't used it to their advantage we'll have to see how mccallum faces a really good boxer
00:08:57like manny tony suero is the common opponent wherein something really shows between these two
00:09:02as suero knocked sean mannion out in the eighth round and mccallum handled tony suero now let's go
00:09:08up to the ring announcer michael buffer for the free fight introductions michael and now ladies and

00:11:44mccallum sean manian the green and white of ireland this may be the first championship fight
00:11:52to be judged by two women carol polis carol castellano they have about judges and they have about 20
00:11:59championship fights of experience
00:12:05mccallum has come into the ring relatively cool unlike manion that's something ray i know you've
00:12:09talked about on numerous occasions well there's no perspiration on either fighter but in fact
00:12:16at this moment now they look tight and i wouldn't be surprised if something uh dramatic happened like
00:12:22a knockdown
00:12:25this is a big opportunity for both fighters
00:12:31and mccallum showing a good jab early on here he will throw a lot of combinations he's very quick
00:12:36and frankly when we talked yesterday it's very nice young man to begin with when we talked yesterday
00:12:42he was saying that his toughest fights so far have come in the gym at cronk
00:12:46he knows how effective left jab and mccallum is
00:12:50it's very straight it's accurate and this left jab is going to do a lot for him in the fight against a
00:12:55softball like sean mangan it will keep mangan off balance and uh also it will enable mccallum to
00:13:02deliver a right hand left hook callum with the right hand lead going downstairs missed a little short
00:13:19all right rick
00:13:21lunging left by manian was caught on mccallum's gloves halfway through the first round
00:13:25crowd support here in favor of mangan and you can hear them chanting well i know for many to win
00:13:36or to be effective though he needs to get inside he has to make a fight out of this make a draw out
00:13:41of this fight he can't stand back and try to box a guy of the height of mike mccullum
00:13:46callum a good quick left hand this is a round of pretty much a feeling out process on both sides
00:14:16the left jab is really bothering sean mangan because he can't get set
00:14:34every time he makes a move the current throws the left jab and it connects
00:14:37so we come down toward the end of the first round around which has already seen a little bit of
00:14:47redness and just the slightest bit of puffiness on the right side of sean mangan's face
00:14:51so we're going to get a deep breath come on i'm going to get down okay relax now relax nothing in a hurry
00:15:04okay
00:15:04Okay, I know what I said.
00:15:18According to those very close to Manion, and they're very open about it,
00:15:22his biggest problem in the past has been that he hit the bottle harder than his opponents,
00:15:27but he's supposedly in training, and of course, here's Marvin Hadley in his dressing room.
00:15:31He's perhaps an hour away from defending his title for the 10th time.
00:15:43John Manion, Mike McCallum.
00:15:50Yes. Yes, I did.
00:16:01Once again, the left jab and Mike McCallum are starting to go to work on Sean Manion.
00:16:16So this is the second round, and the pace picks up just a little bit early on in the second round.
00:16:21Both corners telling their man to be patient.
00:16:38Well, that is the key, Burr.
00:16:40In fact, the way that Mike McCallum is fighting Sean Manion is flat-footed.
00:16:44And because Sean can't get inside, it's okay.
00:16:49And normally with an aggressive fighter, a southpaw, it's good to move around the ring.
00:16:53But I don't see a problem that Sean Manion is making for Mike McCallum
00:16:57because he can't get inside due to the left jab of McCallum.
00:17:01And the fact is, Manion is not a guy who you would have to consider to be a knockout puncher.
00:17:07He's had his share, but he is not a guy who you really have to worry about knocking you out.
00:17:13That's something to also look forward to.
00:17:14You notice when Sean Manion reaches inside, the right hand grazes his chin.
00:17:19That was a very good, quick right hand thrown by McCallum when Manion did get in.
00:17:23And there's a great shot to the body.
00:17:24And there's a great shot to the body.
00:17:37Ever, Mike McCallum's nickname, the body snatcher, he's making good on that right now.
00:17:42He's going downstairs to the body, and he did hurt Manion a moment ago with a good, solid left hand.
00:17:50In fact, Manion wasn't, he didn't agree with the fact he was hit, you know,
00:17:54why the guys were clenching and the rabbit punch that McCallum hit him with.
00:17:59And Tony Perez, it might help him, all right.
00:18:02A little anger, a little more energy.
00:18:04And the fact that being frustrated might help Sean Manion in this fight
00:18:07because, like, as of now, he, uh, he's not doing anything.
00:18:12He's retreating, and I guess a fighter, the right hand there,
00:18:16a fighter like the Calum, Mike McCallum, he just adds to trouble.
00:18:20Every time Manion does get inside, and McCallum holding and hitting there,
00:18:24and we'll see if he doesn't get a warning here from Perez for hooking.
00:18:27He does not.
00:18:27That was a beautiful series of right uppercuts.
00:18:30Thrown by McCallum.
00:18:34And when Manion gets inside, he gets the worst of it.
00:18:38So he almost has no place to go.
00:18:41Coming down toward the end of the second round.
00:18:43We're going into Mike McCallum's corner.
00:18:56Mike McCallum hasn't done anything wrong for this moment.
00:19:01Manion isn't even in the fight.
00:19:03And in the corner of Mike McCallum is the veteran trainer and manager Lou Duva,
00:19:07and this is his first time in the ring with McCallum.
00:19:12Yeah, real good.
00:19:13You know what I'm saying?
00:19:16Now, you're handling him beautiful.
00:19:17Now, remember.
00:19:18Turn it out.
00:19:19Remember.
00:19:19You ever said it was a target.
00:19:21You're getting there.
00:19:22Right?
00:19:24You got me?
00:19:26You're boxing beautiful out there.
00:19:27Mike, that jab is working you in the body punch.
00:19:29Just a little more, baby.
00:19:30Now, you ain't got to look for nothing.
00:19:31Remember that.
00:19:31Come on, right?
00:19:32Now, let's take a look at the body shot there to the right side,
00:19:36and he'll come back over the top and then come back on the other side.
00:19:39There's a shot.
00:19:40There's a borderline shot, but not a low blow.
00:19:43So far, Manion doesn't have any answers for what McCallum is giving him,
00:19:47and he may duck into a right hand here soon,
00:19:49trying to get away from the body shots and the left, Ray.
00:19:53Well, that replay also indicated that Manion does not like it to the body.
00:19:59And I'm sure that McCallum's going right back to the body
00:20:02and trying to hurt him
00:20:03and then put in combination of those beautiful combinations together
00:20:06and get him out of there.
00:20:10McCallum has been very workman-like
00:20:12and very effective through the first two rounds.
00:20:16There's another good right hand.
00:20:23McCallum showing his good ability with both hands.
00:20:25Very patient fighter so far.
00:20:27Hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it, step back to the end.
00:20:28Okay, very good.
00:20:28I'm waiting for a count of my hand by McCallum to come into play
00:20:35because, again, Barry,
00:20:37Manion is still running in with that chin exposed.
00:20:41All right, break, break.
00:20:43Don't hold it in, Eddie.
00:20:44Come on.
00:20:44Good-bye.
00:20:44Callum getting inside once more.
00:21:04The softball moment, the right hand of Manion dropped.
00:21:06I still see that Manion does not like it to the body.
00:21:13And I don't see why McCallum's not staying there.
00:21:16He went right back to it there
00:21:17and once more you could just see the arms drop.
00:21:19No question that he's hurt by those body shots.
00:21:22He should work, McCallum should work to the body
00:21:24and come up with a count of my hand.
00:21:26Puffiness around the right eye of Sean Manion
00:21:33started in the first round.
00:21:36Manion fighting like a confused fighter at the moment
00:21:38and, as Larry Merchant mentioned, he has no place to go.
00:21:44Pretty hard to hide in that square, isn't it?
00:21:47It's so small.
00:21:48In fact, especially when your man is aggressive.
00:21:50All right.
00:21:51What McCallum's doing now is a beautiful job.
00:21:53He's working on a jab.
00:21:55He's a thing of beauty.
00:22:04And there's a left hand by Manion.
00:22:07There was a surprise and that will get his attention.
00:22:10We'll also get some respect from Mike McCullum.
00:22:14And that's what Sean needs to do.
00:22:16He needs to take initiative and throw his own punches.
00:22:19There's a little bit of blood on the bottom part
00:22:22of the right eye alongside the bridge of the nose
00:22:24of Sean Manion.
00:22:27And another good right-hand body shot.
00:22:40Well, McCallum has come back
00:22:41from that one left hand by Manion.
00:22:45And those downstairs shots are really taking their toll.
00:22:48But Manion definitely has the fouls back.
00:22:57We want to remind you that on November 9th,
00:23:00we will be back for World Championship Boxing.
00:23:02Larry Holmes puts his title on the line
00:23:04against James Bonecruster-Smith.
00:23:06He handed Mike Bruno, who was a bright hope
00:23:08from Great Britain.
00:23:10A devastating defeat.
00:23:11That really catapulted him right into the limelight.
00:23:13And it takes place Friday, November 9th.
00:23:15We'll have it live, 10 o'clock Eastern.
00:23:17I'll be there with my cohort, Sugar Ray Leonard
00:23:19and Larry Merchant.
00:23:20That's live bone pressure.
00:23:22Smith challenges IBF champion Larry Holmes
00:23:25who'll try to make it 46 straight.
00:23:31Look, don't go straight back in a line.
00:23:33You understand, though?
00:23:34Don't go straight back.
00:23:35That's what he needs this.
00:23:36He's a dirty son of a gun.
00:23:38He's going to push it.
00:23:38He's going to push it to go after us.
00:23:45Sean Manion has a look in his eyes
00:23:47as he knows better than anyone
00:23:49who's telling him that he's overmatched right now.
00:23:52He's a brave, he's a spirited fighter
00:23:54and he'll hang in there as long as he can.
00:23:56But he appears to be overmatched.
00:23:58McCallum has been pacing up since the first round.
00:24:02Every round, a little bit more active,
00:24:03a little bit busier, throwing a few more punches.
00:24:05And he scored effectively right from the opening bell.
00:24:08The third round was a good round for Sean Manion.
00:24:10At least he fired back.
00:24:12He threw punches.
00:24:13And he gained a little respect.
00:24:15Again, he just nailed McCallum with that lead off left.
00:24:20And once again...
00:24:24You notice now also,
00:24:26McCallum's not rushing anymore.
00:24:27He's starting to wait.
00:24:28He's starting to think now.
00:24:30Manion's starting to find the range a little bit here
00:24:32in round number four.
00:24:33And normally, fighting southpaw is very awkward
00:24:39because these guys are doing just the opposite.
00:24:41And the reason it's somewhat easy for McCallum
00:24:44is because of his height and his reach advantage.
00:24:46He's able to throw punches without getting off balance.
00:24:49Both men in our conversations yesterday
00:24:53say they have trained to go the distance 15 rounds,
00:24:56even though neither one would like to particularly.
00:24:59Manion breathing through his mouth a little bit here
00:25:01in the fourth round.
00:25:05And again, that jab bothering it.
00:25:07Sean, Sean, Sean Manion needs to be first.
00:25:18He needs to get his punches off first.
00:25:20He's a shorter fighter.
00:25:21His arms are shorter.
00:25:22He needs to get inside.
00:25:23He needs to be...
00:25:24He has to be the one to work
00:25:26and dictate the fight.
00:25:41That left hand shot by the head of McCallum.
00:25:43All good.
00:26:00That was another left hand,
00:26:01but that one did not appear to hurt McCallum.
00:26:03Might have been a little bit short with it.
00:26:04But what's happening now with McCallum,
00:26:06he's starting to telegraph his punches
00:26:07and he's going straight back,
00:26:09which is wrong because a fight of the like Manion
00:26:12gains momentum.
00:26:13He comes straight in
00:26:14and he's able to catch those lead off left hands.
00:26:30That's counterpunched by McCallum.
00:26:34This is when Manion needs to fall back inside.
00:26:46While McCallum's throwing this combination,
00:26:48Manion's throwing his.
00:26:50That's the end of the fourth round.
00:26:59Let's get this thing.
00:27:01You got to keep it with this.
00:27:02See, you got to count your hands right here.
00:27:05When he fires at you, look.
00:27:06Good crown, Michael.
00:27:07Get over from that left cross that he's doing.
00:27:10See, you didn't go over your shoulders.
00:27:11You get this?
00:27:12Take a big one.
00:27:13Take a big one.
00:27:14Take a big one.
00:27:16Now, listen.
00:27:18Now, your hair's a little higher
00:27:19because he's in there with that damn punch.
00:27:21Right?
00:27:22Now, when you're close to him,
00:27:23when you touch him,
00:27:24when you touch him with your right hand,
00:27:25come back with your...
00:27:26See, you're talking much more punch.
00:27:27Yeah, I'm good.
00:27:27Come back with your...
00:27:28Come to the back.
00:27:29Let's see.
00:27:30And Mannion did come up with an answer here in this round.
00:27:33There was a right jab that landed.
00:27:35And he landed a couple of straight left hands,
00:27:38lead left hands in that round.
00:27:40He didn't win the round,
00:27:41but he did give McCallum something to think about.
00:27:44So, we start the fifth round,
00:27:52and we'll see if round four
00:27:54didn't give Mannion a little bit of confidence.
00:27:58No further blood from underneath the eye.
00:28:01So, whatever the problem was,
00:28:03they have managed to stop it pretty much.
00:28:04Still a puffiness around Mannion's eye,
00:28:06but he does not appear to be cut.
00:28:08That, too, is what should bother McCallum.
00:28:10Those little hair and find, body finds.
00:28:12McCallum, I mean, men can hit McCallum,
00:28:15and I don't know why he's not doing it.
00:28:17Continue to do it, brother.
00:28:17Good time, Mannion does get inside.
00:28:36McCallum gets him out of there in a hurry.
00:28:38That was a good right hand by McCallum.
00:28:42And Mannion comes right down to the right hand of his arm.
00:28:44The left jab of Mike McCallum is going to join a job
00:28:59in the right eye, the right eye, rather, of Sean Mannes.
00:29:03It seems to be a slight swelling above the right eye.
00:29:14All right, right.
00:29:21No holding and getting.
00:29:22Okay.
00:29:31Two hands free all the time.
00:29:32Two hands free all the time.
00:29:36Coming down toward the one-minute mark here.
00:29:39A minute and ten seconds remaining in the fifth round.
00:29:41With the tools that Sean Mannes possesses,
00:29:44he needs to make more of a fight out of this,
00:29:46more of a brawl, a barbarawn brawl out of this fight.
00:29:50He needs to make McCallum exchange punches,
00:29:53and hopefully he'll get lucky.
00:29:55But on the outside, he's asked for a lot of trouble
00:29:57due to the left jab,
00:29:59the beautiful left jab of Mike McCallum,
00:30:01which has been doing a great job
00:30:03on that right eye of Sean Mannes.
00:30:06Mannes trying to get inside,
00:30:08but McCallum has just been able
00:30:09to keep him off of him just enough.
00:30:18There was a straight right hand right on the nose.
00:30:22Best punch of the fight for McCallum.
00:30:24And Mannion is hurt.
00:30:25Manion trying to tie his man up,
00:30:36just keep him off of him as best he can.
00:30:39Ten seconds remaining here.
00:30:42Some of the sting seems to have gone from Mannion
00:30:44after that good straight right hand.
00:30:49And that was low.
00:30:50There is a right hand
00:31:03off of lazy left,
00:31:06and he came back with a hard, straight right hand
00:31:08with McCallum.
00:31:10The best blow of the fight
00:31:12it is this far.
00:31:14Straight right hand.
00:31:15Manion's main consolation right now
00:31:45is that he's getting $75,000
00:31:47for this fight.
00:31:48By far the biggest purse of his career.
00:31:50And McCallum is only getting $30,000.
00:31:53I'll explain why later on.
00:31:54You saw that swelling on the eyelid
00:31:56of Sean Mannion,
00:31:57and that could really cause him
00:31:58some problems, Ray, I would think.
00:32:00Oh, yes.
00:32:00And I have first experience
00:32:02because there's a round of progress.
00:32:04The eye has to get worse.
00:32:06And, uh,
00:32:07which means Sean needs to go to work.
00:32:09Sean Mannion definitely needs to go to work.
00:32:12McCallum unmarked here.
00:32:14This is the sixth round.
00:32:24McCallum doing pretty much
00:32:25what he has to do here.
00:32:26Again, Bert,
00:32:44that left jab,
00:32:45it's coming out.
00:32:46And it's coming out now.
00:32:47It's coming out more frequently
00:32:48than, uh,
00:32:49the earlier rounds.
00:32:50But it's more of a snap jab.
00:32:52You know,
00:32:52it's an open blow.
00:32:53He's trying to pester
00:32:55Mannion,
00:32:55keep that jab on his eye
00:32:57if he can.
00:32:58Swelling can only get worse.
00:33:01And the reason for the open blow,
00:33:02Dave,
00:33:02it comes out quicker.
00:33:04It reaches the target faster.
00:33:07And he's got it zeroed in
00:33:08pretty well
00:33:09with that eye of Sean Mannion.
00:33:10McCallum looks like a fighter
00:33:18who's just trying to pick his spots
00:33:20right at the moment.
00:33:21Well,
00:33:21he's going to cover his
00:33:22convert intent at this point
00:33:24just to, uh,
00:33:25throw the left jab
00:33:26and try to get the right hand in.
00:33:28Right out,
00:33:44Sean Mannion,
00:33:45it seems to be getting worse.
00:33:48And it's due to the left jab.
00:33:50Once again,
00:33:51the left jab
00:33:51has worked beautifully
00:33:53for Mike McCullough.
00:33:55It's been very effective,
00:33:56particularly in this round.
00:33:57There's a left hand by Mannion
00:33:59that did get into the head
00:34:00of Mike McCallum.
00:34:01You know,
00:34:01what I see
00:34:02on another left hand.
00:34:03Mannion does not
00:34:04come to life
00:34:05until he's hurt.
00:34:06That's when he throws
00:34:07stocks on his punches
00:34:08and starts becoming aggressive.
00:34:12McCallum definitely
00:34:12seems susceptible.
00:34:27There's a right hand
00:34:28by McCallum
00:34:29and another.
00:34:33I think you're right,
00:34:34Ray.
00:34:34Every time Mannion
00:34:35gets stung,
00:34:36it seems to wake him up
00:34:37a little bit.
00:34:42And once again,
00:34:43there it is again.
00:34:44Mannion's fighting back.
00:34:49Yeah!
00:34:50That was Mannion's
00:34:59best round.
00:35:00It's starting to feel good now.
00:35:01I told you what I'd tell you.
00:35:03It's going to feel good?
00:35:04Yep.
00:35:04Okay, now you feel like a man.
00:35:06See, you had to get
00:35:07beat it up, you know.
00:35:08Now you can go from here on.
00:35:10Now look.
00:35:11Pack your hands with me on the other one.
00:35:14Any fucking thing you see,
00:35:17I told you.
00:35:18You understand?
00:35:19Now when he comes up,
00:35:21look.
00:35:21My head?
00:35:22You all right?
00:35:22You're way ahead.
00:35:23You're way ahead, man.
00:35:23Look.
00:35:25There's a right hand
00:35:26by McCallum
00:35:27that woke Mannion up
00:35:28and he came back
00:35:29with a right and a left.
00:35:32And here's another combination.
00:35:33There's a straight left hand.
00:35:36Straight left.
00:35:38If he had some power,
00:35:39that might have done some good.
00:35:41But it did add points
00:35:42and he probably
00:35:43took that round.
00:35:49And in Sean Mannion's corner,
00:35:53they were saying,
00:35:54you're starting to feel good,
00:35:54aren't you?
00:35:55And Mannion agreed that he did.
00:35:56So let's see what happens
00:35:57now in round seven.
00:35:58Really?
00:35:59That's what he said.
00:35:59It also seems to me
00:36:10that Sean is having
00:36:11trouble breathing
00:36:12because he is breathing
00:36:13from the mouth.
00:36:15And he has been doing that
00:36:16actually since the fourth round
00:36:17and we've reported that out.
00:36:25And in trying to throw punches
00:36:26in combination a little bit more.
00:36:27and I missed with the right hand.
00:36:47The column just seems
00:36:48to be in control
00:36:48of the fight, Ray.
00:36:49But every now and then
00:36:50he just seems to get
00:36:51a little careless.
00:36:52Well, things seem
00:36:54to be going his way
00:36:54for a while
00:36:55and McCallum
00:36:55just a little too relaxed.
00:36:57and too careless.
00:36:59And that's a perfect time
00:37:00for Mannion
00:37:01to take advantage of it.
00:37:05I would imagine
00:37:06it would be easier
00:37:07for Sean Mannion
00:37:08to fight McCallum
00:37:09against the ropes.
00:37:10And now in the middle
00:37:11of the ring.
00:37:16Right hand by Mannion.
00:37:17Best of that exchange.
00:37:20Mannion hits
00:37:21McCallum with the shot
00:37:22and he moves away
00:37:23and he moves away
00:37:23instead of taking it to him.
00:37:28Now he should stay there.
00:37:30This is when Sean Mann
00:37:31should stay inside
00:37:32and continue to fight
00:37:33and continue to throw punches.
00:37:34That swelling has not gotten
00:37:47appreciably worse
00:37:48in the last couple
00:37:49of rounds
00:37:49inside a minute to go.
00:37:53There's a good left hand
00:37:54by McCallum.
00:37:59McCallum has picked
00:38:00the pace up
00:38:01a little bit here.
00:38:01right hand by McCallum.
00:38:19With those right uppercuts,
00:38:20they're beautiful shots
00:38:21to throw against the southpaw.
00:38:23But if you come back
00:38:24with a beautiful left uppercut
00:38:26and left hook.
00:38:27Back to the body of McCallum.
00:38:43And Mannion did stay in there
00:38:44that time,
00:38:45but he couldn't get anything off.
00:38:46Well, he way too late too, Barry.
00:38:50Uh-oh.
00:38:57Here's Mustapha Hamshou.
00:39:04Syrian middleweight
00:39:05by New York.
00:39:08I'm told that he
00:39:08prayed for 20 minutes
00:39:10a little bit earlier.
00:39:13Starting to get himself loose.
00:39:21Mustapha Hamshou.
00:39:22To finish what I was saying earlier,
00:39:51Mannion is getting $75,000
00:39:53because he has a promotional
00:39:54contract with Bob Arum.
00:39:56McCallum is getting $30,000
00:39:58because he refused to sign
00:39:59a promotional contract
00:40:01with Arum.
00:40:02And took,
00:40:03in which case
00:40:04he would have gotten $75,000.
00:40:06And that's an expression
00:40:07of his confidence
00:40:08that if he wins the title,
00:40:10he'll be a free agent
00:40:11and be able to get
00:40:12better deals for himself.
00:40:14And when was the last time
00:40:16you could remember
00:40:16a total between two men
00:40:18of $105,000
00:40:19in a championship fight,
00:40:20right?
00:40:21No points.
00:40:22There you go.
00:40:27You made that
00:40:28in the locker room,
00:40:29didn't you?
00:40:29Well, a few times.
00:40:31But Barry, you know,
00:40:32it's starting to take
00:40:33his toll.
00:40:33His punch is starting
00:40:34to take a toll
00:40:35on Sean Mannion.
00:40:36And his face now
00:40:37is starting to be worn.
00:40:39His nose seems to be
00:40:40a slight,
00:40:42well, good right hand.
00:40:43Very good right hand.
00:40:44Mannion's hurt.
00:40:45Tries to fight back.
00:40:46McCallum is on him.
00:40:47Mannion, he's got a left hand
00:40:48in, and that backed
00:40:49McCallum off.
00:40:50A slight swelling
00:40:52on the bridge
00:40:53and nose of Sean Mannion.
00:41:05A jab now working
00:41:06to the face
00:41:07very effectively
00:41:08of Michael Callum.
00:41:12Mannion throwing a lot
00:41:13more arm punches
00:41:14than he was earlier.
00:41:19That was a beautiful
00:41:20way to look for
00:41:20by McCallum.
00:41:25All right, Brick.
00:41:26Step back clean.
00:41:27Come on.
00:41:27I see you.
00:41:39Tempo of the fight
00:41:40dictated by Michael Callum
00:41:41almost from the opening bell.
00:41:42This is also
00:41:45the classic confrontation
00:41:46of boxing
00:41:46against a punch
00:41:47or a slugger.
00:41:49And for Sean Mannion
00:41:50he's been tough
00:41:51because he's yet
00:41:52to figure out a way
00:41:53to get through
00:41:54to the left jab
00:41:55of Mike McCallum.
00:41:56Okay, Brick.
00:41:57Brick.
00:41:57That's it, good.
00:42:03This for the WBA
00:42:05Junior Middleweight
00:42:05Championship.
00:42:06A title, incidentally,
00:42:07that Sugar Ray Leonard
00:42:08once held.
00:42:09I don't know
00:42:09how many folks
00:42:10remember that.
00:42:10I remember
00:42:12Beat Ayukaluli,
00:42:14I remember too.
00:42:18Now those are
00:42:18beautiful shots now.
00:42:21That was arm punch
00:42:22to the head.
00:42:24Manion seems ready
00:42:26to go to me.
00:42:27He's a little bit
00:42:28rubbery here.
00:42:37And McCallum
00:42:38just peppering him.
00:42:39Sean Mannion
00:42:40at this point
00:42:40has just become
00:42:41a stationary target.
00:42:45He's a tired fighter.
00:42:46That is certain
00:42:47as we come
00:42:48to the end of the round.
00:42:57You've got the punch.
00:42:58You're not doing it.
00:42:59You understand?
00:43:00You're letting this guy
00:43:01give him a deep breath.
00:43:02Deep breath.
00:43:04Deep breath.
00:43:04Rub his leg.
00:43:05Let's take a look
00:43:06at a combination here.
00:43:07There's a hard right hand
00:43:08by McCallum.
00:43:10A good uppercut.
00:43:15And here's another view
00:43:17of it.
00:43:18McCallum is a very good
00:43:20mechanical fighter.
00:43:21Whether he has the sizzle,
00:43:23whether he has the killer
00:43:24instinct,
00:43:26the personality,
00:43:27to be better than just
00:43:29a good mechanical fighter
00:43:30remains to be seen.
00:43:32That's always been
00:43:33the question mark
00:43:34behind his name.
00:43:37You got that right hand
00:43:38to the body.
00:43:39You understand?
00:43:39Come right back
00:43:40with that left hook.
00:43:41All right, baby.
00:43:41Come on.
00:43:41Keep the jab going.
00:43:42You understand?
00:43:43Keep your hands up.
00:43:52We're coming to the ninth round.
00:43:53Perhaps a little bit of
00:43:55confusion in the corner
00:43:57of Michael Callum.
00:43:58A couple of voices being heard.
00:43:59One that of Dan Guva
00:44:00who has not been with him
00:44:01for a long period of time.
00:44:03Lou Duv, I beg your pardon.
00:44:04Well, they see an opportunity.
00:44:05Well, they see an opportunity
00:44:06and they get just too excited.
00:44:09And he was instructed
00:44:10to do a couple of things,
00:44:11which is very confusing
00:44:12for a fighter.
00:44:14But I think due to the experience
00:44:15of Mike McCallum,
00:44:16he knows exactly what to do.
00:44:17Well, as you've often said,
00:44:18you don't hear any of that anyway.
00:44:20No, you don't.
00:44:30Mike McCallum doing a blue-collar job
00:44:33on Sean Mannion pretty much,
00:44:34just doing what he has to do
00:44:35on a mechanical performance.
00:44:37And as Harry Merchant said,
00:44:39perhaps not a true test
00:44:40of just how good this fighter is.
00:44:41But nevertheless,
00:44:42he's been working in like
00:44:44and he's getting the job done.
00:44:45A W is a W,
00:44:46and a championship to championship
00:44:47shouldn't go on this way.
00:44:49The straight punches
00:44:50would not do this job
00:44:52for Mike McCallum.
00:44:52I think the uppercuts
00:44:53would come into play
00:44:54and be very effective.
00:44:55the left hook,
00:44:57the right uppercut,
00:44:59but just put them together.
00:45:01The left jab is just setting
00:45:02Sean Mannion up
00:45:06for an uppercut
00:45:06or left hook.
00:45:11And Mannion coming up
00:45:12with a very solid shot,
00:45:14and McCallum is on rubber legs now.
00:45:17And now let's see
00:45:17if Mannion can keep it up here.
00:45:19He definitely hurt Mike McCallum.
00:45:23That is trying to...
00:45:24That's taking a whole...
00:45:25a 180.
00:45:27Just like that.
00:45:29Just because Mannion was hurt,
00:45:30he...
00:45:30he just fired up.
00:45:35McCallum on his bicycle now,
00:45:37trying to get his legs back.
00:45:38May have him.
00:45:44And that brought the crowd alive.
00:45:54So it wasn't too terribly long ago
00:46:13that it looked like Mannion's legs
00:46:14were gone,
00:46:15and then just like that,
00:46:16we turned the thing around here,
00:46:17at least for the briefest of moments.
00:46:19Well, bear with the way
00:46:20this fight has been going,
00:46:21Al.
00:46:22It's so unpredictable
00:46:23of the outcome.
00:46:27Mannion's trying to lean in
00:46:28and taking some pretty good shots
00:46:29from McCallum in the process.
00:46:35Again, Mannion fights back
00:46:36after he's been hit
00:46:37by Mike McCullum.
00:46:38Coming down toward the end
00:46:45of the ninth round.
00:46:55Well, as Ray has been saying,
00:46:58the impressive thing,
00:46:59the only impressive thing
00:47:00about Mannion through this fight
00:47:02has been that when he's hit,
00:47:04instead of falling back,
00:47:06he fires back.
00:47:08And that's a good sign.
00:47:09That's something you do want to see
00:47:10in a fighter,
00:47:11even when he's outgunned like this.
00:47:14Now here's the combination
00:47:15from McCallum
00:47:16that has led up
00:47:17to that good punch
00:47:18that Mannion finally did land,
00:47:21and he seemed to momentarily
00:47:25daze McCallum.
00:47:26And you saved him.
00:47:33You understand, David.
00:47:36Okay.
00:47:36Okay.
00:47:44Let's go.
00:47:44Let's go.
00:47:47Let's go.
00:47:50Puffin is under the left eye
00:47:52of Sean Mannion now as well.
00:47:54Come on.
00:47:54Let's go. Come on.
00:47:56As Mike McCallum
00:47:57started to come to the center
00:47:57of the ring
00:47:58without his mouthpiece.
00:48:08All right, Brick.
00:48:09Mike McCallum actually
00:48:10had a similar incident
00:48:11happen to him
00:48:11back in October of 1983
00:48:13when he was fighting
00:48:14Manuel Jimenez
00:48:14in Atlantic City.
00:48:16Seemed to be sailing
00:48:17toward a victory,
00:48:18which he ultimately got.
00:48:19But he was stung
00:48:20by Jimenez
00:48:21in the sixth round.
00:48:22And just like that,
00:48:23man, he goes down.
00:48:24But they say,
00:48:25no knockdown.
00:48:26Why is he pushing?
00:48:27I know you're the man
00:48:27that way.
00:48:27This fight could possibly
00:48:28end up as far as
00:48:30who were in the best shape.
00:48:31And the referee won
00:48:34Mike McCallum for pushing
00:48:35Sean Mannion down.
00:48:37That takes a lot of energy
00:48:38also, Barry.
00:48:39Watch your head.
00:48:40And it's really unnecessary.
00:48:47Man, you don't have to do it
00:48:48on guts if he's going to do it.
00:48:49That'll left hand in there.
00:48:50Should point out the fact
00:48:58that neither of these men
00:48:59has fought beyond
00:49:01the ten round distance
00:49:02and here they are now
00:49:03in round number ten.
00:49:09Again, this is when
00:49:10Sean Mannion should go to work.
00:49:11He should be throwing punches now
00:49:12instead of holding on.
00:49:24Manion missed with the left,
00:49:25got a right home.
00:49:26It seems Manion would prefer
00:49:33a brawl.
00:49:35McCallum not really willing
00:49:35to give it to him.
00:49:37Well, Barry, that's exactly
00:49:38what Manion does best.
00:49:40Inside, he fights well inside.
00:49:42On the outside,
00:49:43he's going to do a lot of problems
00:49:44with a boxer like Mike McCallum.
00:49:48McCallum waited for Manion
00:49:50to straighten up that time
00:49:51and threw the right hand out.
00:49:52I see fatigue in both fighters now.
00:49:55In fact, the way that
00:49:56Michael Collins throwing his punches,
00:49:57they're becoming arm punches now.
00:50:00And he's off balance.
00:50:07He's walking in.
00:50:08He's making a mistake.
00:50:09Michael Collins making a mistake
00:50:10of just walking in,
00:50:11straight up.
00:50:12Suddenly, this fight
00:50:21is becoming one at close range.
00:50:23This is when Sean May
00:50:24should connect.
00:50:27And he got a left hand in there
00:50:28and he might have hurt McCallum again.
00:50:31McCallum tries to spin him around
00:50:33and get him out of there
00:50:34with that jab and does so.
00:50:35Counter-punching right hand
00:50:50by Manion again at the bell.
00:50:56All right, Mike, don't get careless.
00:50:57Don't get careless, you know what I'm talking about?
00:51:01You guys are telling me, Mike,
00:51:02you don't understand this guy's body.
00:51:04Mike, this guy is dead, you know what I'm talking about?
00:51:05You're hearing McCallum's partner.
00:51:08Don't be in no hurry.
00:51:09As you can see,
00:51:11neither fighter has gone
00:51:12as far as he's going to be required
00:51:15to go for the rest of this fight.
00:51:18Neither fighter has gone
00:51:19more than 10 rounds.
00:51:20People are winning these rounds.
00:51:22You know what I'm talking about?
00:51:24I'm talking about it.
00:51:27Earlier tonight,
00:51:28Steve McCrory,
00:51:29the Olympic flyweight champion,
00:51:31made his professional debut
00:51:33an impressive fourth-round 2-K-O
00:51:35over Jeff Hennig.
00:51:43There is the face of a fire.
00:51:51Round 11,
00:51:52and it appears this one will be won or lost on guts.
00:51:54Mike McCallum seemingly in command of this fight,
00:52:02but every time you really think he's going to put him away,
00:52:05up jumps Sean Mannion.
00:52:07And for some reason,
00:52:09Mannion,
00:52:10uh,
00:52:10things are resurgence of strength from somewhere,
00:52:12and he connects.
00:52:15And then all of a sudden,
00:52:16he slows down,
00:52:17and then McCallum's able to land with that,
00:52:19that good left jab,
00:52:20like he did there.
00:52:21Mannion has not been able to
00:52:22back up a good,
00:52:24solid punch so far.
00:52:28His punch has been the harder of the two,
00:52:30and McCallum really came in here
00:52:31with more of the reputation as a puncher.
00:52:39Sounds of frustration on Sean Mann's face.
00:52:41He shakes his head every time he's hit by the left jab.
00:52:50McCallum's corner telling him to keep going downstairs,
00:52:53just keep winning the rounds,
00:52:54don't get careless.
00:52:54He seems to be well in front in this fight.
00:53:22Halfway through this 11th round,
00:53:24as you see.
00:53:27All right, break.
00:53:28No punches.
00:53:29Step back.
00:53:29No punches.
00:53:30Go back.
00:53:36The crowd will react more
00:53:38to Sean Mannion's punches
00:53:40as he has brought a gang of people down
00:53:42from the Boston area.
00:53:44Now there's a lot of movement
00:53:46from Mike McCallum.
00:53:47And what Mannion should do,
00:53:49he should resort to a body attack.
00:53:51Pull that movement down.
00:53:54And it has been breathing through his mouth
00:53:57since the fourth round.
00:53:58It does not seem to have affected him very much.
00:53:59Okay, Brick, come on, you can step back to me.
00:54:04There's a lot of movement down here.
00:54:05And it has been breathing through his mouth
00:54:05since the fourth round.
00:54:06It does not seem to have affected him very much.
00:54:07Okay, Brick, come on, you can step back to me.
00:54:08Okay, Brick, come on, you can step back to me.
00:54:09Okay, Brick, come on, you can step back to me.
00:54:10And it has been breathing through his mouth
00:54:17since the fourth round.
00:54:18It does not seem to have affected him very much.
00:54:21Okay, Brick, come on, you can step back to me.
00:54:28Well, it's apparent that both men are in fantastic shape.
00:54:33First time they've been past 10,
00:54:34and he's still look good.
00:54:39McCallum up on his toes a little bit more in this round,
00:54:42showing a little bit more leg speed.
00:54:46All right, Brick.
00:54:47Watch the head, both of you, okay?
00:54:49What can I do?
00:54:50All right.
00:54:58Look, you've got to back him up.
00:55:00The only way inside is Mike McCallum.
00:55:05Kick off on inside.
00:55:06Spit out.
00:55:07Spit out.
00:55:08The guy don't want to do nothing inside.
00:55:10He doesn't dare.
00:55:11They're listening to Georgie Benton,
00:55:14famous trainer from Philadelphia,
00:55:17there with Lou Duva.
00:55:18Now, when you get close, go to work.
00:55:20Win it with the jab on outside.
00:55:21There you see on your right,
00:55:24Mr. Mannion before the fight
00:55:26and on the left after 11 rounds of action.
00:55:30That little face job
00:55:32will cost you to get him $75,000.
00:55:39Oh!
00:55:44You mentioned that his corner
00:55:45has told Mike McCallum not to get careless.
00:55:48Frankly, guys,
00:55:49I'd like to see him get a little careless
00:55:51or a little reckless.
00:55:52What has he got to lose?
00:55:53Mannion can't hurt him.
00:55:55He does a better job when he's careless.
00:55:56In fact, he scored more punches.
00:55:58He's cornered this round,
00:56:00telling him that he has to back Mannion up.
00:56:09Mannion really hasn't had to go
00:56:11any kind of a distance.
00:56:12He's only had one fight
00:56:13since October 25th of 1983.
00:56:15That was the fight we spoke of
00:56:16a few moments ago
00:56:17with Manuel Jimenez.
00:56:19Since that time,
00:56:20he's had only one fight
00:56:21and that only went one round.
00:56:26So he's been largely inactive
00:56:28and yet...
00:56:29I can't understand it,
00:56:31but now Mannion's fighting
00:56:32an intelligent fight now.
00:56:33And he's moving,
00:56:34he's jabbed to the body,
00:56:35he's faint,
00:56:37and he's connecting.
00:56:39Why he waiting
00:56:40until the 12th round,
00:56:41I never know.
00:56:41And he's still right in his face.
00:57:04And Mannion backs off
00:57:16from the right hand
00:57:17by McCallum.
00:57:18Mannion's ready to go to me.
00:57:20He's been hit by the right hand,
00:57:22although it's not been
00:57:23a clean punch.
00:57:26He's still been able to daze
00:57:27Mannion for a second.
00:57:28I thought that four rounds ago.
00:57:31Mannion's legs look a little rubbery to me.
00:57:32They don't look any worse now
00:57:33than they did then to me.
00:57:35Well, his greatest attribute
00:57:35is a durable chin Mannion has.
00:57:41But again, he just seems
00:57:42to be wearing down to me.
00:57:46I think if McCallum
00:57:46just go to work,
00:57:48there's a great possibility
00:57:49he'll be able to get Mannion
00:57:50out of there.
00:57:50McCallum was on his toes
00:57:51the last round.
00:57:52This round,
00:57:54he's back flat-footed.
00:57:57Again, you notice that
00:57:58there was a slight delay
00:57:59when Mannion was hit.
00:58:01He just stood there.
00:58:02And Mannion covering up
00:58:04a little bit more now.
00:58:05McCallum having things
00:58:06pretty much his own way
00:58:07at the moment.
00:58:12It was a delayed reaction
00:58:13from Mannion.
00:58:16A little trickle of blood
00:58:17from the nose
00:58:18of Sean Mannion now.
00:58:20First sign of blood
00:58:21that we've seen
00:58:21in the last six or seven rounds.
00:58:23So we come down
00:58:29toward the end
00:58:30of the twelfth round
00:58:30and once more,
00:58:31Mike McCallum just
00:58:32getting the job done.
00:58:33They should check
00:58:34their nose of Sean Mannion.
00:58:39There's a good right hand
00:58:40by McCallum.
00:58:42He's ready to go, Bear.
00:58:43And he's hurt
00:58:43from that uppercut.
00:58:44That definitely hurt him.
00:58:45Five seconds remaining.
00:58:46Well, this is Sean Mannion.
00:58:59You want to make sure
00:59:00you're up.
00:59:01Okay.
00:59:02Don't throw your nose, Kevin.
00:59:04Go ahead.
00:59:05Wipe his nose.
00:59:06Wipe his nose.
00:59:07Come on.
00:59:07Come around.
00:59:07There's Mike McCallum at work.
00:59:31Two right hands.
00:59:32The third right hand.
00:59:34There's a left.
00:59:36The left uppercut.
00:59:37The right cross.
00:59:38The right uppercut
00:59:39and the left cross.
00:59:46Sean Mannion
00:59:47in the rich tradition
00:59:49over the decades
00:59:50of Irish boxers
00:59:51who try to compensate
00:59:52with heart and cleverness
00:59:53for a lack of power.
00:59:57Sean's going to instruct him
00:59:58to push him, bite him
00:59:59and everything else.
01:00:00But I think it's just
01:00:00a little bit too late for that.
01:00:03And the face that Sean Mannion
01:00:05looks out in the mirror tomorrow
01:00:06while he's shaving
01:00:07will not resemble the one
01:00:08that looked at him
01:00:09this morning.
01:00:14Right back over there.
01:00:15And Mike McCallum starts off
01:00:29as though he wants to end
01:00:30right here.
01:00:32McCullum needs to stop
01:00:33throwing those looping right hands
01:00:34and stop doing some
01:00:35right uppercuts.
01:00:36blood pretty profuse now
01:00:39from the nose
01:00:40and Mannion
01:00:40recovers up again
01:00:41and once more
01:00:42looks as though
01:00:42he may be ready to go.
01:00:44Hold it!
01:00:45Hold it!
01:00:45I can break.
01:00:46Come back.
01:00:48The right eye of Mannion too.
01:00:51It's starting to swell
01:00:51from the bottom.
01:00:52Very puffy
01:00:53underneath the right eye.
01:00:56And of course
01:00:56with blood coming
01:00:57from the nose
01:00:58which appears
01:00:58to be broken
01:00:59breathing becomes
01:01:01increasingly difficult.
01:01:03Come back.
01:01:03No pressure.
01:01:03Come back Glenn.
01:01:06Well man
01:01:07he's huffing and puffing
01:01:08now
01:01:08and basically
01:01:09he's just fighting
01:01:10from the heart
01:01:11and that's how to take
01:01:12my head off to him
01:01:13I mean he has a great deal
01:01:14of desire to win
01:01:15but I think at this point
01:01:16now
01:01:17it looks a little hopeless
01:01:19and he covers up
01:01:21once more
01:01:22we're at the midway point.
01:01:24Those who sneak up
01:01:26across by Mike McCullin.
01:01:28Every one of those
01:01:28got through to the face
01:01:29of Sean Mannion.
01:01:30It doesn't like much
01:01:31but they're very effective
01:01:32and do a great deal
01:01:33of damage.
01:01:37And the eye now
01:01:38virtually closed
01:01:39that is the right eye
01:01:41of Sean Mannion.
01:01:45Crowd sensing
01:01:46at the end
01:01:46is
01:01:47in sight.
01:01:48Perry Mannion
01:01:49is still in the fight
01:01:50although I would
01:01:51suggest him stop it
01:01:52but still
01:01:53he hangs in there
01:01:54after being hit.
01:01:55The body shots thrown
01:01:56by Mike McCullin
01:01:57has taken their toes.
01:02:00Mannion stays
01:02:01he remains a stationary target
01:02:02just taking the uppercuts
01:02:03the right hands
01:02:04left hooks.
01:02:06Taking a lot of punishment
01:02:06now saying
01:02:07come on and fight.
01:02:08He's trying to fight his man.
01:02:12And he's taking
01:02:12a lot of shots here.
01:02:14Oh he's ready to go.
01:02:15He's ready to go.
01:02:16Perry Mannion's taking
01:02:16a good long look here.
01:02:18It's all instinct now.
01:02:27What McCullin needs to do
01:02:28is take his time
01:02:29and not rush himself
01:02:31and pick his shots.
01:02:35They should stop it.
01:02:36I really feel
01:02:37at this point now
01:02:38this man
01:02:39definitely should
01:02:40not continue to fight.
01:02:42The nose is pretty nasty.
01:02:43He has no chance
01:02:44to winning.
01:02:45Other than sheer pride
01:02:46there's really no reason
01:02:47to go on with this.
01:02:48They should stop this fight.
01:02:50Okay.
01:02:53Sean Mannion
01:02:55has bent
01:02:56but he refuses
01:02:57to break.
01:03:02He should point out now
01:03:03that under the rules
01:03:05here in New York
01:03:05and in WBA championship
01:03:06fights now
01:03:07a ringside position
01:03:09is empowered
01:03:11to stop the fight.
01:03:12and he is being examined
01:03:21by the ringside position
01:03:23right now.
01:03:24This is a dark fight.
01:03:26You've got to fight
01:03:26this guy
01:03:27and now he's fighting.
01:03:28You understand?
01:03:30And now he's fighting.
01:03:31Give him water.
01:03:34Water.
01:03:35Take your time.
01:03:35The guy's done.
01:03:36You understand?
01:03:37Now just take your time
01:03:38and hear your nose
01:03:39and hear your mouth.
01:03:39Take your time.
01:03:41Take your time.
01:03:42Take your time.
01:03:47Stay back.
01:03:47Stay back.
01:03:48Stay back.
01:03:49Mike, you're here.
01:03:49You're here.
01:03:50Oh.
01:03:51Sean Mannion
01:03:52shaking his head
01:03:52trying to get the cobwebs out.
01:03:54All right.
01:03:54This corner telling him
01:03:55we want you in an alley fight.
01:03:57All right.
01:03:5714.
01:03:59Ring doctor
01:04:00did talk with
01:04:01Tony Perez,
01:04:02the referee.
01:04:05And we'll see
01:04:06how far this goes on.
01:04:08Ray, I know you feel
01:04:08it should have been
01:04:09stopped already.
01:04:10Yeah, bro.
01:04:10I mean, really.
01:04:11I mean, the guy's been
01:04:12hit by some tremendous shots
01:04:13and these punches like that
01:04:15devastate shots,
01:04:17they take the toll
01:04:17on the fighter,
01:04:18especially his career
01:04:19and even his health.
01:04:23Sean has demonstrated
01:04:24he has a lot of hearts
01:04:25but enough is enough,
01:04:28really,
01:04:28because McCullough now
01:04:29is just picking the shots.
01:04:30One of our number
01:04:33here at HBO
01:04:34did overhear the conversation
01:04:35between the ring position
01:04:36and Tony Perez,
01:04:37the referee,
01:04:38and there seemed
01:04:38to be an indication
01:04:39that Perez would not
01:04:40let this go too far.
01:04:42Okay, break.
01:04:43Break.
01:04:52Another good right hand
01:04:54by Michael Callum.
01:04:55That right hand
01:04:56zeroed in on his chin.
01:04:57Really hurt.
01:04:57Just watch the legs
01:05:03of Sean Mung.
01:05:04You can see the conditions
01:05:05he's in.
01:05:09Another good right hand
01:05:10by McCullough.
01:05:11He pushes him away.
01:05:14All right, Rick.
01:05:15We're back.
01:05:15One of you.
01:05:18Tony Perez looking very closely
01:05:20midway through the 14th round.
01:05:22Good job.
01:05:22All right, putting him away.
01:05:23All right, putting him away.
01:05:23Good job.
01:05:25Good job.
01:05:27All right, putting him away.
01:05:29Again, those body shots
01:05:32Sean Mung doesn't like.
01:05:34Beautiful left hand. McCallum just doing it at will now.
01:05:44Mannion, all guts. But that's really a backhanded compliment.
01:05:50If McCullum wants to get his Mannion out, all he has to do is cut the ring off, work that bite again,
01:05:58bring those other cuts back to the chin, and he'll see a major change in this entire fight.
01:06:0345 seconds remaining here in the 14th round. It appears, at least at the moment, that Shawn Mannion will survive yet another storm.
01:06:19Again, a Beauvoir hand delivered by Mike McCullum.
01:06:26I think Mike McCullum's getting a little arm wheeled from throwing so many shots.
01:06:30And I guess he can't believe this guy's taking it.
01:06:33Took another good right hand from McCullum, did Shawn Mannion.
01:06:36McCullum's pushing him away in the face.
01:06:39And Tony Perez reminds him of that inside of 10 seconds.
01:06:46All right.
01:06:48Right.
01:06:50Oh!
01:06:51Oh!
01:06:52Oh!
01:06:53Oh!
01:06:54Okay.
01:06:55Come on.
01:06:56Take a look.
01:06:57Rub'em on in.
01:06:58This is it, kid.
01:06:59Better go out and fight like a dog.
01:07:02This is an alley fight.
01:07:03You're listening.
01:07:04Do you hear me?
01:07:05Fight like a dog.
01:07:06Great.
01:07:07Back him up and fight.
01:07:09Don't.
01:07:10Keep pushing him back.
01:07:11Don't let the guy come forward.
01:07:12Now look.
01:07:13Hey.
01:07:14Now while you, while you, all you got to do to this guy now is to throw straight right
01:07:20hands to the body.
01:07:21Hit the guy with arms.
01:07:22All right.
01:07:23Malish.
01:07:24We'll take a look so we can hit.
01:07:25All right.
01:07:26Come on.
01:07:27Come on.
01:07:28Come on.
01:07:29Come on.
01:07:30It's an alley.
01:07:31Get a stand.
01:07:32Go after.
01:07:33Last.
01:07:34Keep the work.
01:07:35Keep the work.
01:07:36Keep the work.
01:07:37Keep the work.
01:07:38Don't be in no hurry to do these things.
01:07:39Right.
01:07:40Okay.
01:07:41Now you're going to try to swing these guys there.
01:07:42You're going to look bad.
01:07:43Let's go.
01:07:44All right.
01:07:45Let's go.
01:07:46Let's go.
01:07:47Let's go.
01:07:48Let's go.
01:07:49Let's go.
01:07:50Let's go.
01:07:51Let's go.
01:07:52Let's go.
01:07:53Let's go.
01:07:54John Manning has three minutes.
01:07:56Mike McCallum has three minutes to a championship.
01:07:59Okay.
01:08:00Break.
01:08:01Break.
01:08:02Break.
01:08:03Break.
01:08:04Break.
01:08:05Break.
01:08:06Break.
01:08:07Break.
01:08:08Break.
01:08:09Break.
01:08:11Break.
01:08:12Break.
01:08:13Break.
01:08:14Break.
01:08:15Break.
01:08:16Take it away.
01:08:17Take it away.
01:08:18Take it away.
01:08:19You got that back.
01:08:20You got that back.
01:08:21Shawn Manning will have earned his $75,000 in this fight.
01:08:22Shawn Manning will have earned his $75,000 in this fight.
01:08:24Well, Shawn Manning now is starting to take the full impact of the punches because through fatigue,
01:08:26Well, Sean Mannion now is starting to take the full impact of the punches because through fatigue, he started falling into the blows. So they're much more devastated now. You see that he's running to his left jab, right hand.
01:08:41Two minutes remaining in this one, and McCallum straightens Mannion right up with an uppercut.
01:08:53When Sean Mannion is hit, it's like a delayed reaction. He doesn't react to later on.
01:09:03I see the concentration in Mike McCallum's eyes. He's waiting for the right hand.
01:09:19Got a short right hand right there that backed Mannion off once again. Mannion takes a deep breath. He's still got half a round to go.
01:09:26Watch for the right hand again to the head.
01:09:31And it's going to be thrown like a right hook.
01:09:38Mannion got a lunging left hand in, but there's not much left there.
01:09:44Hold it. Hold it. No point in. I'm pointing to the back.
01:09:48One minute left in this fight.
01:09:54Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it.
01:10:00Watch your head, Mannion. OK? Watch your head. Come in, OK?
01:10:03Watch your head. Come in, OK?
01:10:15Mannion is still trying to do a job here.
01:10:17Well, I guess everyone can see that Sean Mannion has a heart of a lion, but also he's outclassed by a good boxer like Mike McCullough.
01:10:25Oh, I hear. Right right now, McCullough,
01:10:30McCullough, meanwhile.
01:10:31Is just 15 seconds away from a heavy from a championship rather junior middleweight championship.
01:10:42John Mannion will survive this one and Mike McCollum will be the champion.
01:10:49So in the ring I don't think there's any question about this one oftentimes you don't like to jump the officials and say how's this one gonna go but in this case I don't think there's any question about it.
01:11:19Class one out here.
01:11:21Well I think the fact doesn't matter.
01:11:23It is.
01:11:24It should have stopped the fight in 13 miles.
01:11:26I personally feel.
01:11:27I'll take my hand off to Sean Mannion and he stayed in there but he was totally outclassed.
01:11:33Really no contest in this fight almost right from the outset.
01:11:38The story of this fight was really written in the first chapter and that was McCollum's jab on the right side of the head of Mannion.
01:11:45Well it was an artistic fight for Mike McCollum and I think the most devastating punches were the uppercuts.
01:11:51He was able to land right uppercut, left uppercut.
01:11:53He wanted you to buy it.
01:11:54That beautiful left uppercut thrown there by Mike McCollum did a lot of damage to the eyes of Sean Mannion.
01:12:01Very effective jab that McCollum had and it really kept Mannion off him and the only way Mannion was going to be in this fight at all was to get inside and he was really by and large unable to do that.
01:12:10But then again on the other side he was capable because a lot of times when he was hurt he would fire back.
01:12:16So Mike McCollum will be the WBA junior middleweight champion of the world.
01:12:22A title as you mentioned that Sugar Ray Leonard held by way of beating IU Kaluli.
01:12:29Should also mention Mike McCollum also beat IU Kaluli, knocked him out in the seventh round.
01:12:35Just how good Mike McCollum is we might not really know until another fight maybe two fights.
01:12:40Well he's growing, he's developing and he's going to improve.
01:12:43He's going to get stronger and you can see a lot of Mike McCollum.
01:12:47He did say as a matter of fact and I think we mentioned it at the top of this fight that his toughest fights have come in a gym at Kronk where there are an awful lot of pretty good fighters.
01:12:56One of course sitting right behind us tonight Tommy Hearns.
01:12:59There's so much talent in the Kronk gymnasium and the fact that I can agree with that.
01:13:05There are or is however a little bit of trouble in paradise so far as Mike McCollum and Emanuel Stewart and Kronk are concerned.
01:13:13Stewart was not at his corner tonight. Uduva was. There's a look at Tommy Hearns looking on.
01:13:18And he saw a guy who was a very credible performer tonight.
01:13:22Tommy affecting the designer glasses and next to him Milt McCrory who saw his brother
01:13:28in a very impressive fashion in his professional debut tonight.
01:13:33And these two guys could laugh. They are both champions.
01:13:38Tommy Hearns of course here to see marvelous Marvin Hagler that fight upcoming live from here in Madison Square Garden.
01:13:45And Hearns can only lick his chops and lick his wallet for that matter at the prospect of that fight.
01:13:52Meanwhile we await the official decision here.
01:13:57Mike McCallum obviously thinks that he's won the fight.
01:13:59If pictures are a thousand words you only have to look at Shawn Mannion on one side of the ring and Mike McCallum on the other to know who won and who lost this fight.
01:14:07Right now let's go up to the ring announcer Michael Buffer and get the official decision.
01:14:11Ladies and gentlemen we have a unanimous decision. Here is the official scoring.
01:14:18Judge Johnny Lobianco scores it 149-123.
01:14:23Judge Carol Castellano scores it 150-134.
01:14:28And Judge Carol Paula scores it 149-136.
01:14:33For the winner by unanimous decision and the new World Boxing Association Junior Middleweight Champion of the World,
01:14:42Mike the Body Snatcher McCallum.
01:14:48He's a great, great, true champion.
01:14:50Good inspiration to all of the guys in the crown team.
01:14:53Also to me, we had some great workouts in the gym.
01:14:56It's just that a little misunderstanding with the Durian fight.
01:15:00I felt like I'm getting old and number one contender for a year and almost half.
01:15:05I need my shot.
01:15:06So the only way I could do is get out of there and get my shot.
01:15:09Why couldn't you knock Shawn Mannion out?
01:15:12Shawn is a durable fighter.
01:15:14Very tough.
01:15:15I knew before the fight going in the fight that Shawn would be a tough fight.
01:15:18I haven't fight for about eight months and I think that have a lot to do with me.
01:15:22And I came back.
01:15:23I did 50 rounds.
01:15:24I think I'm proud of myself.
01:15:26A little bit of time I get.
01:15:27A little bit reckless in the middle part of the round.
01:15:30But get myself back together and there was no stopping there.
01:15:33And you had to win the fight for Jamaica, myself.
01:15:36Jamaica had been a champion a long, long time.
01:15:38I'm the first champion and I'm proud of that.
01:15:40Thanks to you people of Jamaica, I did it.
01:15:42Thank you very much.
01:15:43And now back to Barry and Ray.
01:15:45All right.
01:15:46Thank you very much, Larry Merchant and Mike McCallum.
01:15:48What's in the future now?
01:15:49He's the kind of guy you have to feel could go up to middleweight.
01:15:51Could probably even go down to welterweight if he chooses to.
01:15:53He's going to be around for a long time and he can challenge the middleweights also.
01:15:56Stay true.
01:15:57Stay true.
01:15:58Be careful.
01:15:59I'll keep going.
