00:00:00and finally well who is going to win break page has the most experience the
00:00:05most skill but unfortunately he also has the most wrong stuff around his middle
00:00:11too much weight Tim Witherspoon on the other hand has the most power what this
00:00:16fight is truly about in my judgment is whether Tim Witherspoon has the rest of
00:00:21the right stuff to be a heavyweight champion we're going to take a look now
00:00:26at Greg Page Louisville Fats
00:00:32people go around talking about I'm not this I'm a myth I'm not I don't train I don't do what I have to do
00:00:39I don't have the ability to be champion I don't have a real power this time I'm still in the bank so I have a tendency you know to get mad about it but I'm kind of crazy like this if I get mad about
00:00:55something and somebody keep on bugging me by something but we can fight Greg Page has
00:01:00been called an angry young man he grew up in Louisville Kentucky and learned at a
00:01:05very young age that boxing was a means to settle an argument this lesson was taught
00:01:09by his father Albert when he gave Greg and his brother a pair of gloves to settle
00:01:13air differences Greg didn't want boxing his love was basketball when he did enter the ring his style
00:01:20was reminiscent of another Louisville heavyweight as a matter of fact Greg moves so beautifully everybody
00:01:27said he looked like Ali and that's a big compliment I said you can be as good as you want to be to keep
00:01:31practicing so we kept practicing and here we are right this day fighting for the world championship
00:01:37hey we're gonna win it the making of a heavyweight champion in the case of Greg Page was comprised of
00:01:43more than just ring battles Greg battled weight problems and there were numerous
00:01:47bouts with controversy in 1982 there was a courtroom tug of war over who would promote Greg Page
00:01:53it wasn't a tug of war with Don King it was a tug of war with Butch Lewis by itself
00:01:58Butch Lewis has never had exclusive contracts he never will and he never and I never pranked for him
00:02:05but Butch Lewis was not totally out of the picture the out-of-court settlement left
00:02:10page in the hands of King but Lewis was still a one-third co-promoter while the 10 weeks of
00:02:15court did not phase page it did have its impact it made him more hungry and he made him more
00:02:21determined to get what he wanted this title coming up more tonight you'll see how hungry he is
00:02:26Greg Page has always been plagued with questions of his desire nonetheless his five years as a
00:02:32professional have been active he boasts a record of 24 fights with 18 knockouts and
00:02:37one loss in May of 1982 page took on Jimmy Young amidst the King Lewis controversy he proved to the
00:02:43public that he was unfazed by the ensuing court battle by winning the fight decisively in ten
00:02:49one month later page faced Trevor Burbank and faced his only loss he broke his right hand in the second round
00:02:55but his determination and confidence were far from shattered he's not confident in his heart that he
00:03:01really beat me because uh I had one hand he couldn't stop me he couldn't stop me he wouldn't hit me well he
00:03:08hit me with a couple good shots but he didn't beat me up for ten rounds he looked worse than I did after the fight
00:03:13but it was during the fight that counted and Trevor Burbank out pointed Greg page after ten rounds he was awarded the victory in May of 1983 Greg page entered the ring to defend his
00:03:25USBA title against Ronaldo Snipes the winner of this bout was promised a shot at the coveted WBC heavyweight crown both fighters were anxious to take that challenge
00:03:34page is the number one ranked contender had never had a title shot and Snipes who knocked down Larry Holmes in 1981 was eager for a rematch
00:03:43future when all was said and done on that night Greg page had retained his USBA crown and now he awaited the showdown with Larry Holmes but for some reason Holmes didn't show
00:03:54he's a chicken he's a bonafide everyday chicken because Larry Holmes has made a mockery of himself he has made a real made boxing a spectacle he has joked with everybody play with everybody's emotions play with people's feelings he can't do that
00:04:09and he's telling me that he's talking about he's a people champion that people want to see him fight the top contenders having been denied his title shot a frustrated Greg page tucked away his opinions and
00:04:20returned to the ring while Larry Holmes took off the WBC page took on Rick Keller the anger had returned and it was vetted on Greg's opponent Keller proved to be simply no match for the number one ranked WBC contender
00:04:35Greg Page knocked him out in two rounds
00:04:40In what was dubbed a two-knock fight
00:04:42But tonight's bout is anything but a two-knock
00:04:47It's the chance Greg Page has waited for
00:04:50For a long, long time
00:04:52Snipes is a good fighter
00:04:53Witherspoon is a good fighter
00:04:55All these guys are good fighters
00:04:56But I'm better
00:04:57You know, every time I say something
00:04:59There's always going to be a comparison with Ali
00:05:01Or I'm being flamboyant
00:05:03I'm being, uh, what is it?
00:05:07I'm being braggadocious
00:05:08You know, the rest of these things, I'm not
00:05:10You know, there's a time when you can sit up
00:05:12And hoop and holler and sing about what you can do
00:05:15But you can't do it
00:05:17But, you know, like I said, it's my turn
00:05:19And I will win convincingly
00:05:21And so, coming up, the battle for the WBC Heavyweight Championship
00:05:29Between Tim Witherspoon and Greg Page
00:05:32The numbers one and two contenders for Larry Holmes' vacant title
00:05:36Well, Ray Leonard, we talked about the fact that we know a little bit now about Greg Page
00:05:40We know he's a little bit heavy
00:05:41A little bit heavier than he ever has been, as a matter of fact
00:05:44What do we know about Tim Witherspoon?
00:05:45The one constant and the one thing everybody knows
00:05:47The man can punch
00:05:49Wrestler's greatest asset
00:05:50I think by being a lethal puncher like Tim Witherspoon
00:05:53He should dictate the pace from the very start
00:05:55Work the body, slow the movement down to Greg Page
00:05:57And take advantage of it
00:05:59Well, Tim Witherspoon is a guy who really defies the mold
00:06:01He got into boxing very late
00:06:03He's a very nice guy, he was a football player
00:06:06And yet, when he started at age 22, he's on the verge of a championship
00:06:10I'm terrible, Tim Witherspoon
00:06:13When I walk the streets of Orwell
00:06:15And the area of Don King's training camp
00:06:18There's one thing I like to do
00:06:20And that is drink beer
00:06:22And you know what that kind of beer is?
00:06:24It gotta be light because I can't be too heavy
00:06:26Because I gotta fight
00:06:28At 26, Tim Witherspoon, while possibly not ready for a trip to Hollywood
00:06:33Is well on his way to the heavyweight championship
00:06:36With little more than four years in the ring
00:06:38For him, this rise comes naturally
00:06:41Being an all-around athlete since childhood
00:06:44I think if I wasn't really in the sports at a young age
00:06:47Then I wouldn't catch on to fighting as fast
00:06:50It probably would take any longer
00:06:52But it just so happened that, you know, me, my brothers, all of us
00:06:55We catch on to sports
00:06:56And good things of life real fast
00:06:58All the negative things we kind of like block out
00:07:01The good things at that time were those experiences
00:07:04That would prepare him as an athlete and responsible citizen
00:07:07Growing up on the tough streets of South Philly
00:07:09Tim and his friends spent much of their time
00:07:11Working on fundraising projects
00:07:13This taught us determination and to never quit
00:07:16Because we thought we never could raise the money up
00:07:18And we did
00:07:19We went in every neighborhood
00:07:20I don't care if it was white, Spanish, black neighborhoods
00:07:24We were successful in all the neighborhoods
00:07:25It was all part of education
00:07:27We were striving to make a goal
00:07:29We were doing things that were good
00:07:32And I didn't even know it
00:07:33Out of that, Tim has developed the confidence that molds champions
00:07:37It's not the brash bragging of youth
00:07:39But the faith in his own ability to win
00:07:41Surrounded by what some critics have called inexperience in his corner
00:07:44Brother Bernard, trainer Aaron Snowell, and manager Carl King
00:07:48Success in the ring has not been elusive
00:07:50And so far, the record speaks for itself
00:07:52Aaron I think has a great relationship with Timmy
00:07:55And that's what really is important in my eyes
00:07:58Is that whether or not a fighter has the respect and admiration
00:08:02For the guy that's giving him the instructions
00:08:04Aaron is inexperienced in a lot of ways
00:08:07And is just like I am in a lot of ways
00:08:09And Tim is also
00:08:10So, of the three of us, you know
00:08:13It's like I'm the oldest at 27
00:08:15And it's a real youthful combination here
00:08:18And thus far, it's been very successful
00:08:20I'm the youngest trainer ever to have a world-class fighter
00:08:25In a short period of time
00:08:27And people start to wonder
00:08:29We're going to make history
00:08:31So when he gets the title
00:08:33It's going to be a historical moment
00:08:35That people are going to be watching
00:08:37With 14 fights already behind him
00:08:40It was on June 5, 1982
00:08:42That Tim Witherspoon made his first big impression
00:08:44On the boxing world
00:08:45By defeating Ronaldo Snipes
00:08:47In a ten-round split decision
00:08:49Snipes proved to be an unorthodox boxer
00:08:51And a more of a controversial opponent
00:08:53Rather than an inspiring one
00:08:55This fight paved the way for a shot
00:08:57At the then-heavyweight champion
00:08:59Larry Holmes
00:09:00On May 20th, 1983
00:09:02Holmes survived the 15th assault
00:09:04On his title
00:09:05Barely
00:09:06Holmes was rubber-kneed and staggering
00:09:08Under a flurry of Witherspoon punches
00:09:10In the ninth round
00:09:11Many felt the split decision
00:09:13Should have gone the other way
00:09:14Including Tim Witherspoon
00:09:16You know, I beat him
00:09:17I get sick every time I watch the film
00:09:20And when I knock Page out
00:09:22Then I'm going to fight him
00:09:23And pay the people
00:09:25And let the people know that
00:09:27You know, Tim Witherspoon won the first fight
00:09:29I came all the way up
00:09:31Did his job on the champion of the world
00:09:33Who was undefeated
00:09:34And I had so many knockouts
00:09:36And he won the title
00:09:39Before I even put the paid gloves on
00:09:41I think that's embarrassing for him
00:09:42To even let me go three rounds
00:09:45At the end of the fight
00:09:46He put his head down
00:09:47I threw my hands up
00:09:49They threw trash at him when he walked out
00:09:51And they told me I won
00:09:53This evening is the first time ever
00:09:55The leading contenders will have clashed
00:09:57For a vacant WBC heavyweight title
00:09:59So as Tim Witherspoon prepares to do battle with Greg Page
00:10:03It is ironic that Tim's thoughts lie with the former champion
00:10:06And his questionable reasons for vacating the title
00:10:09I think that he didn't want to fight the number one contender Greg Page
00:10:14And he definitely didn't want to rematch with me
00:10:16So he was trying to manipulate and do everything he possibly can to make money
00:10:21And go out the easy way
00:10:23No, he can't get his just due if he's going to do that
00:10:26He's got to fight
00:10:27And this is why I take his attitude toward him
00:10:30Because I've respected him a whole lot
00:10:32And then the press conference in New York
00:10:34When I went to shake his hand
00:10:35And then he took Greg Page
00:10:39He said
00:10:40He said
00:10:41And you, Greg Page
00:10:43Say one more thing to me
00:10:45And I'm going to punch in your mouth, Greg Page
00:10:48Zip
00:10:49So he jumped up at me
00:10:50And you
00:10:51I said, what?
00:10:52I said, come on
00:10:53I'm ready now
00:10:54He said, Don
00:10:55You better talk to him
00:10:56Or I won't
00:10:57I don't have to take this
00:10:58So, you know
00:11:00My mentality won't let me
00:11:01Let him
00:11:02Discourage my mind
00:11:03I was ready to fight there
00:11:05He was seeing how much
00:11:06I had
00:11:15Well, a look at Tim Witherspoon
00:11:16And here is Tim Witherspoon right now
00:11:18As he starts
00:11:19Makes his way out of his locker room
00:11:21And down toward the ring here at the Las Vegas Convention Center
00:11:24Witherspoon looks very much warmed up
00:11:26And again, that's something you've talked about on so many occasions, Ray
00:11:29As being of infinite importance
00:11:31I think for the first round, Barry
00:11:33Loosen up in the dressing room is very, very important
00:11:37He's a very confident guy, Tim Witherspoon
00:11:39And really, he's a guy who seems to be
00:11:41Almost rise beyond his boxing years
00:11:44Well, first of all, because of the experience
00:11:46And he's been through this
00:11:47The excitement
00:11:48The attention
00:11:49The spotlight
00:11:50We have to see what's going to happen with Greg Page
00:11:53We have to consider the fact that when he fought Larry Holmes for the title
00:11:56Tim Witherspoon had had as many fights as Larry Holmes had had title fights
00:12:00And yet he almost won it
00:12:01And in the minds of many people here in Las Vegas
00:12:03He did win that fight
00:12:04It was a very good fight on the part of Tim Witherspoon
00:12:07He was very courageous and he fought a gallant fight
00:12:10Here's another guy who didn't have a long amateur career
00:12:12He only had six amateur fights
00:12:14Matter of fact, he lost his last amateur fight to Marvis Fraser
00:12:17But he's had 22 professional fights
00:12:19Or rather 18 professional fights
00:12:20He's won 17 of them
00:12:22And that's considering the fact that he did not turn pro
00:12:24Until the age of 22 years
00:12:26I think this is a perfect matchup
00:12:28Boxer against puncher
00:12:29Greg Page the boxer
00:12:31What we'll see
00:12:32The very first round against Tim Witherspoon
00:12:34The lethal puncher
00:12:35We're also going to be seeing here
00:12:38A match between
00:12:40Two great heavyweight traditions
00:12:42Terrible Tim Witherspoon
00:12:44The Philadelphia tradition
00:12:46Sonny Liston
00:12:48Trained in Philadelphia
00:12:49Joe Fraser came out of Philadelphia
00:12:51Ali trained in Philadelphia
00:12:53Of course Larry Holmes comes from nearby
00:12:55Eastern Pennsylvania
00:12:56And Greg Page comes out of the Louisville tradition
00:13:01Ali and Jimmy Ellis
00:13:03Oddly enough
00:13:04I can't find anybody that knows anyone
00:13:06Who's another outstanding fighter
00:13:08Who came out of Louisville
00:13:10There's Witherspoon's record
00:13:11Do you put Larry
00:13:13Do you put Witherspoon
00:13:14In the mold of the true Philadelphia boxer
00:13:17Well all you can say is
00:13:18Is that there's such a strong subculture
00:13:20Of boxing in Philadelphia
00:13:22That in the gymnasiums
00:13:24He's probably had a lot of experiences
00:13:25That a fighter with a lot more fights
00:13:27Would not have had
00:13:28And that does count for something
00:13:30Perhaps counts for his poise
00:13:32Despite the few fights he's had
00:13:34Yeah that's the thing that really does strike me Ray
00:13:35Is he is remarkably poised
00:13:37You know he hasn't been awed
00:13:38By the fact that here he is
00:13:39In a championship fight
00:13:40And awed by the fact that he was fighting Larry Holmes
00:13:42Just kind of seems to have everything in the proper perspective
00:13:45Witherspoon likes the initial challenge
00:13:46And he's never in awe of anything
00:13:48And he's been through it
00:13:50And that's why he looks so comfortable now
00:13:52He's been around some pretty big guys
00:13:54As a matter of fact he did spar with Greg Page
00:13:56And here's a look at Greg Page
00:13:57As he starts toward the ring now
00:13:59Witherspoon sparred with Page, Burbick, Michael Spinks, Eddie Mustafa, Muhammad, James Scott
00:14:03He's been around some guys who really know their way around the ring
00:14:06Meanwhile it is Greg Page who starts to make his way in now
00:14:10Greg Page had an interesting observation about himself
00:14:14He said they say I'm too heavy
00:14:16They say I can't punch
00:14:17They say I'm not serious
00:14:18They say I'm fat
00:14:19I'm too old
00:14:20I'm too young
00:14:21I'm a myth
00:14:22I'm a fluke
00:14:23I'm a poor exhibition of a fighter
00:14:24And he said I love it
00:14:25Well Greg Page he's a natural
00:14:27Natural born athlete
00:14:29A great hand speed
00:14:30Really good power
00:14:32And the fact that they criticize his discipline
00:14:34But I think this is his first title fight
00:14:36And he's really pumped up for it
00:14:38The first round again Burr is going to be very interesting
00:14:41Well Eddie Futch, one of the senior trainers in this business
00:14:44Said about Greg Page that he has everything it takes
00:14:47If he would just settle down and get his head on straight
00:14:50If he would ever listen
00:14:51And I think what we're going to find out tonight really
00:14:53Is if he is listening to anybody except Greg Page
00:14:56Larry I think it's perhaps a fact a fighter can't train himself
00:15:00Well a veteran fighter can
00:15:03But I think this most serious rap against Page has been
00:15:06Is that he has never put himself in the hands of top professionals as Ali did
00:15:11And he's a self-taught fighter
00:15:13And he's much the same fighter as when he came out of the amateur ranks
00:15:17Where he had won national titles twice
00:15:19So there's a look at Tim Witherspoon as he awaits the arrival of Greg Page
00:15:26Actually this is one of the less raucous ring entrances that I've seen
00:15:31Both men pretty much within themselves
00:15:33And the crowd really not taking sides yet
00:15:36Well I think once the first bell rings and they go out
00:15:41And whoever's leading the most points in every three rounds
00:15:44That's when the crowd would take sides
00:15:46It is quite a distance from the locker room to the ring
00:15:48And Tim Witherspoon has had quite a lot of time to sit and wait for Greg Page
00:15:53And you can see Page is still not to the ring
00:15:57He's still got about another 25 or 30 yards to go to get there
00:16:00And that's the longest walk
00:16:01You don't think that extra weight is already slowing him down
00:16:04I doubt that very seriously
00:16:06But the walk from the dressing room to the ring
00:16:09Especially the first big title fight
00:16:11Oh, it's so, so, so frustrating
00:16:15Well the question about Greg Page historically has been stamina
00:16:20And now here's a guy coming in at 239.5 pounds
00:16:23And you have to question it perhaps tonight even more than you usually do
00:16:27But by the same token as Ray pointed out earlier
00:16:31His worst fight was against Trevor Burbick when he listened to everybody
00:16:35And came in at 218 pounds
00:16:37So maybe he needs that extra weight as a sort of blanket of security
00:16:43So let's take a look at the numbers on this fight
00:16:46And how do they look?
00:16:49So the numbers, Greg Page and Tim Witherspoon
00:16:53Very comparable in age, very comparable in height
00:16:55Not very comparable in weight
00:16:5719 pounds, 19 and change actually
00:16:59To the advantage or the disadvantage of Greg Page
00:17:02Whichever way it happens to be
00:17:04The people that they have fought
00:17:07Who are common opponents
00:17:09The last two, probably the most significant
00:17:10Rinaldo Snipes
00:17:11And Quick Tillis
00:17:13And it was quick for Tim Witherspoon
00:17:15We saw that fight
00:17:16It was over before it started
00:17:17It took Greg Page eight rounds
00:17:19And in fact Tillis did hurt Page
00:17:21In the second round of that fight
00:17:24Let's take a look at the record of Greg Page
00:17:26And it is impressive to be sure
00:17:2823 victories, one loss
00:17:30He's at 18 knockouts along the way
00:17:33He has never quite lived up to his press clippings
00:17:36And tonight of course he could really make amends for all of that
00:17:39His desire has been questioned on numerous occasions
00:17:42And so right now let's go up to the ring announcer Chuck Hall for the pre-fight introductions
00:17:47Ladies and gentlemen, the officials assigned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission
00:17:54For the next bout of the evening
00:17:56The judges are Lou Tabbit, Chuck Minker and Jerry Roth
00:18:00The attending physicians at ringside, Drs. Donald Romeo and James Game
00:18:06The timekeeper is Charlie Roth
00:18:08Counting at the knockdowns, Mike Lachella
00:18:11And the referee is Mills Lane
00:18:15This is the main event of the evening
00:18:17And sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission
00:18:20Art Lurie Chairman
00:18:22And by the World Boxing Council
00:18:24Jose Suleiman President
00:18:26A 12 round event
00:18:29For the vacant heavyweight championship
00:18:33Of the world
00:18:34With the World Boxing Council
00:18:38Introducing
00:18:39In the blue corner
00:18:41Fighting out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
00:18:44Weighing in at 220 and one quarter pounds
00:18:49His professional record consists of 17 wins
00:18:53One defeat with 12 knockouts
00:18:56He's rated number 2 by both the WBC and the WBA
00:19:01Ladies and gentlemen, introducing
00:19:03Terrible Tim Witherspoon
00:19:05Did he win the Red Quarter?
00:19:07The Red Quarter
00:19:08And the Red Quarter
00:19:09And in the Red Quarter
00:19:10And the Red Quarter
00:19:11And the Red Quarter
00:19:12And in the Red Quarter
00:19:13Was Greg Clash
00:19:14Out of Louisville, Kentucky
00:19:16Weighing in at 239 and one and half pounds
00:19:20His professional record consists of 23 wins
00:19:24One defeat with 18 knockouts
00:19:26He is rated number one by both the WBC and the WBA.
00:19:32Ladies and gentlemen, introducing Greg Page.
00:19:40And the crowd, I think, really seems to be split.
00:19:44I thought I heard more anti-Page than pro-Witherspoon.
00:19:49But as Ray said, crowds are fickle,
00:19:52and we'll find out how they feel once the fight starts.
00:19:54Once again, Ray, if I could read your mind,
00:19:56both fighters have cooled down just during the time that it took
00:20:00from getting from the locker room into the ring here.
00:20:02Oh, yes, the perspiration has dried up completely.
00:20:06Butterflies, for sure.
00:20:07But you're over here. All right, now, come back here.
00:20:09Protect yourself at all times. Let's get it on. Come on.
00:20:13Bill's laying a district attorney in Reno. No-nonsense.
00:20:15The question here is whether Tim Witherspoon can apply enough pressure
00:20:19to discombobulate Page, who likes to move around a lot.
00:20:24Well, Page, as they would say down in Texas, is a hoss.
00:20:30A C-cup hoss.
00:20:36Witherspoon getting the last-minute advice from his corner,
00:20:38and a proficient corner it is.
00:20:40Young, but proficient.
00:20:44And what's left then is to settle the issue in the 18-foot square here.
00:20:47First round.
00:20:49This for the WBC Heavyweight Championship.
00:20:51Witherspoon, black trunks, white stripe.
00:20:53Greg Page, white trunks, yellow stripe.
00:20:58Page very active to start things.
00:21:03Witherspoon trying to stay in close.
00:21:06These are two bombers.
00:21:07There's no question about it.
00:21:08Witherspoon has power in both hands, and at times, he turns to southpaw,
00:21:12and he works the body.
00:21:14Very, very strong overhand right.
00:21:16Page, exceptionally fast hands.
00:21:19Good movement.
00:21:21There is a little debate as to whether or not Greg Page has ever been knocked off his feet.
00:21:25He was knocked down once, but it was ruled a slip.
00:21:30And so we'll say for all intent, he has not been knocked down.
00:21:36So far, Greg Page is moving around the ring.
00:21:40And again, it's more of a couldn't-out process.
00:21:43But because these guys are starting the first round somewhat cold,
00:21:46be prepared for a knockdown.
00:21:48Flash knockdown.
00:21:51Combination by Witherspoon.
00:21:52Opens up Page for a moment.
00:21:55Well, the crowd that had been sitting on its hands just a moment ago
00:22:01with the opening bell has really come alive here.
00:22:03They're into the fight.
00:22:14Combination and a good right hand by Witherspoon.
00:22:18You see Tim now is really trying to lower up on my right hand.
00:22:21That was a very quick right hand, too.
00:22:23He needs to cut the ring off on Greg, because of what he's doing,
00:22:26he's following Greg Page around the ring.
00:22:29Perfect defense by Tim Witherspoon.
00:22:32To Witherspoon's credit, he did not get careless
00:22:34and try to put Page away.
00:22:37Page was not that seriously hurt from that punch.
00:22:39But it woke him up, I'll tell you that.
00:22:42But it woke him up, I'll tell you that.
00:22:45Because of Page's hand speed, he's able to do a lot of things that normally get you in trouble,
00:23:01like to move him straight up away from a punch.
00:23:05There's a great counter right hand.
00:23:07But if he has to be absolutely careful, really careful,
00:23:10against a puncher like Tim Witherspoon.
00:23:13Come on, come on, come on.
00:23:14Witherspoon throws their short, compact punches.
00:23:17And those, of course, can be the most devastating kind.
00:23:21Also, observe when Page walk away.
00:23:24He has to walk away from his opponent and come back with a punch.
00:23:27He does do, I mean, you make the inevitable comparison to Muhammad Ali,
00:23:33who was here, incidentally, tonight.
00:23:35And Page does do some of the things that Ali did.
00:23:38Not all good traits.
00:23:39He'll look over his shoulder at his opponent.
00:23:42He'll drop his hands around his waist, get up on his toes a lot.
00:23:44Now, whether or not he does that as effectively as Ali did,
00:23:47very seriously question.
00:23:49Let's take a look here.
00:24:07I thought it was preceded by a left and a right for the body,
00:24:10and then the right hand.
00:24:12We're going to take a look at this from a couple of different angles,
00:24:15and Witherspoon told me earlier that he was going to try to go to the body.
00:24:19That Page, who was already very heavy,
00:24:21if he could slow him down on the body in the last half of the fight,
00:24:24Witherspoon feels will belong to him.
00:24:28There it is.
00:24:30Good right.
00:24:31That combination, I thought, gave the round to Witherspoon.
00:24:33All right.
00:24:35Jab by hand around the body.
00:24:36All right.
00:24:38Now, peace.
00:24:38Peace.
00:24:40Come on.
00:24:42Keep the buckle up.
00:24:43This is the second round.
00:24:50Scheduled for 12, incidentally.
00:24:52WBC, remember.
00:25:00Page has been economical with his punches.
00:25:04He hasn't thrown a lot of punches.
00:25:05Page has been very consistent with that left jab.
00:25:10He has to keep Tim Witherspoon in the center of the ring,
00:25:13and now allow Witherspoon to just go away and throw his punches,
00:25:16especially against the ropes.
00:25:17This is where Page doesn't want to be.
00:25:20Witherspoon caught Page bouncing off the ropes there,
00:25:23and caught him in the right hand.
00:25:23Keep him up, Page.
00:25:25You've got to get off that net.
00:25:26Keep him up.
00:25:26Come on.
00:25:27Come on.
00:25:28Pills Lane really a no-nonsense referee at now.
00:25:31Ray Page glanced over at his corner.
00:25:33I'm sure he was instructed to keep moving.
00:25:40Pills Lane, incidentally, in that last exchange in the corner,
00:25:43telling Page to keep his punches up.
00:25:47Wild right hand.
00:25:48Witherspoon punches most effectively inside.
00:26:02You see heavy punches here.
00:26:04Now, Page really doesn't want to be here
00:26:05because Witherspoon is a harder puncher.
00:26:08And for Page to move around the ring,
00:26:10he should use that left jab
00:26:12because if he's going to move, he needs to do something.
00:26:14Witherspoon, incidentally, hit Page on the break
00:26:20and drew another sharp volley of words from Mills Lane,
00:26:24not to mention from Greg Page.
00:26:28They didn't touch gloves there, so all is well here.
00:26:30Watch for the overhand right by Witherspoon.
00:26:32Page says, I'm not hurt.
00:26:34That's usually a sign the man is hurt.
00:26:38And that was a shot to the stomach.
00:26:40Solar plexus shot by Witherspoon.
00:26:42And Page is hurt now if he wasn't before.
00:26:49That body shot thrown by Tim Witherspoon,
00:26:51double great page over.
00:26:53Keep my, come on.
00:26:53Now, you probably see Witherspoon stay on the body.
00:26:57If not, he should.
00:26:58That was a tough shot right to the midsection.
00:27:02And that just sucks the breath right out of you,
00:27:04doesn't it, Ray?
00:27:05Yes, it does.
00:27:05Now, watch for the overhand right
00:27:06because the way Witherspoon is positioning himself,
00:27:10he's trying to unleash that right hand.
00:27:11That's a good left hand to the head.
00:27:13Witherspoon fighting a very intelligent fight so far
00:27:15because he's really not wasting any punches.
00:27:24Bombing right hand again.
00:27:25Page says, no, I'm not hurt again.
00:27:27Well, this is a similar fight when Page fought Trevor Burbank.
00:27:38Stayed close to him.
00:27:40He's in a lot of trouble for, a lot of problems.
00:27:42And Witherspoon's doing the same thing.
00:27:44He's making Page fight his fight.
00:27:46And a round to it.
00:27:49Another very good round for Tim Witherspoon.
00:27:52And Larry got another warning at the end of the round
00:27:54from Mills Lane to keep his punches up.
00:27:57Let's go to Witherspoon's corner.
00:27:59This may be the first time in history
00:28:05that a heavyweight champion has a trainer
00:28:07who's younger than he is.
00:28:0824-year-old Aaron Snow.
00:28:10He's doing the position, right?
00:28:12We're laying back on him a little bit too much.
00:28:14All right?
00:28:15Put your legs up.
00:28:17All right, sir?
00:28:18Put your legs.
00:28:19You've hit him a couple times, Tim.
00:28:21If you're inside, you've got to step up south,
00:28:23pull on him.
00:28:23All right?
00:28:24You've got to put it together.
00:28:24It's an easy fight.
00:28:26Huh?
00:28:26All right?
00:28:26It's an easy fight.
00:28:27Let's take a look.
00:28:29There's a low blow that landed on the borderline,
00:28:32and the second one landed real low.
00:28:34That's what doubled up, Page.
00:28:38We didn't catch that earlier,
00:28:39but it was a decidedly low blow that doubled up, Page.
00:28:42In the corner, please.
00:28:44Come on.
00:28:44You've got to get out here on the bail.
00:28:45Come on.
00:28:49No question about it.
00:28:50Could see it in the replay.
00:28:51Could not see it during the round.
00:28:52It was a low blow, not a similar flexus blow,
00:28:54as we said earlier.
00:28:55Round three.
00:28:56Well, it wasn't a low blow,
00:28:58and Page proved to be a good sport by not complaining.
00:29:05Camera's getting right in on that shot,
00:29:07but really made it apparent.
00:29:09Those are the guys that are really in the middle of the spray.
00:29:11They're almost in there as close as Mills Lane is.
00:29:13There's a bombing right hand.
00:29:15It came behind the left.
00:29:18Good right hand by Witherspoon behind the left hand.
00:29:20Witherspoon still being very patient.
00:29:22That's what Page has to be very careful about doing,
00:29:25falling back against those roach
00:29:26when Witherspoon is able to throw those looping right hands.
00:29:31What he should do, really,
00:29:32is tie this man up against the roach.
00:29:33Get that hand flow.
00:29:34Get back to the center of the ring.
00:29:35Keep moving.
00:29:38All right.
00:29:38We'll step back in.
00:29:39Come on.
00:29:40We'll step back in.
00:29:41Come on.
00:29:41We'll step back in.
00:29:42Come on.
00:29:42Come on.
00:29:42Once again, Mills Lane telling Witherspoon
00:30:02to keep his punches up.
00:30:04That's about four times that he's able to tell Witherspoon that.
00:30:08Incidentally, Witherspoon's corner between rounds,
00:30:11as you heard him say,
00:30:12when you get him inside,
00:30:13go softball on him.
00:30:14So we'll see if Tim Witherspoon can do that.
00:30:22Page fighting a lot of this fight.
00:30:23It goes back to the ropes.
00:30:24Good job.
00:30:24We're going to say it.
00:30:28Come on.
00:30:29Fight down.
00:30:29Come on.
00:30:30Get him up.
00:30:31We'll step back.
00:30:32I'm going to get back.
00:30:33Both of you get him up.
00:30:34Let's go.
00:30:34Come on.
00:30:36Now Mills Lane tells both fighters to get him up.
00:30:38That weight that Greg Page is carrying,
00:30:41if he should just lean and put all that weight on
00:30:44Chip Witherspoon, it will well wear him down.
00:30:51Page seems to be in the corner once again by choice.
00:30:55He's not being forced in there.
00:30:56And he pulled Witherspoon to him that time.
00:31:00Witherspoon's getting more body behind his punches
00:31:03than Greg Page.
00:31:05Page is more so just doing a series of punches
00:31:08through his arms.
00:31:10Not really powerful punches.
00:31:22Piss of this third round has slowed just a little bit.
00:31:25None of those shots really doing much damage.
00:31:39Page getting a little bit better of it.
00:31:41That got hooked by Page.
00:31:43It's him Witherspoon.
00:31:44Witherspoon trying to fight out of trouble here.
00:31:47At the end of the third round.
00:31:49Good round at the end for Greg Page.
00:31:51Woo!
00:31:51Woo!
00:31:55We want to remind you,
00:31:58World Championship Boxing continues on Friday, March 30th.
00:32:01Marvelous Marvin Hagler against Juan Rodan.
00:32:0410 o'clock Eastern time.
00:32:05Seven out here on the Pacific Coast.
00:32:06That's live.
00:32:07I'll be there with Larry Merchant and Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:32:09The marvelous one.
00:32:10Defending his undisputed middleweight title
00:32:12for the ninth time.
00:32:13It happens live only on HBO.
00:32:16And the comeback of Sugar Ray Leonard
00:32:18takes place on Friday, May 11th.
00:32:20That's also at 10 o'clock Eastern time.
00:32:21Live.
00:32:22Be with us for the comeback of our own Sugar Ray Leonard
00:32:25right here, only on HBO.
00:32:29Not too hard.
00:32:30Not too hard.
00:32:31Let's see where we can get out of Greg Mayer's friend.
00:32:33I am.
00:32:34You good for him?
00:32:35Take it out.
00:32:35Bing, bing, bing, bing.
00:32:36That's what he needs to do.
00:32:37Hey.
00:32:39Keep the left here.
00:32:40Left hold.
00:32:41Take it out.
00:32:42Left hold.
00:32:43Let's go, Jay.
00:32:44I think Tim Witherspoon might have gotten a little bit of an idea
00:32:52that Greg Page can, in fact, punch at the end of that third round.
00:32:55And we'll see if he's a little bit more cautious here.
00:32:57Page has gone flat-footed here.
00:33:11Come on, Page.
00:33:12He's up on his toes for the first couple of rounds.
00:33:16Back up on his toes now, trying to measure witherspoon.
00:33:19Page has not been an indication that the weight is really bothering Greg
00:33:30because he's mostly using it in his best interest
00:33:32as far as leaning and putting power behind his punches.
00:33:39Punch out.
00:33:40Get him out.
00:33:41Come on.
00:33:42Punch out.
00:33:42All right, come on, put it down there.
00:33:50Come on.
00:33:51The holding going on here.
00:33:55Come on.
00:33:55Punch out.
00:33:56Come on.
00:33:56Bill's laying telling him to punch out.
00:33:58Punch out.
00:33:59And now Page pushes Witherspoon away.
00:34:01Hey, with it.
00:34:04He knows that Page has walked away.
00:34:08Again, he has to be very careful with a puncher like Tim Witherspoon.
00:34:13Well, again, that's a Muhammad Ali tactic, but perhaps it should have stayed with the greatest.
00:34:24But, you know, Page is able to get away with it because of his speed.
00:34:29I've seen him knock a lot of guys out by walking away.
00:34:33There's quite a lot of punches thrown in this fight.
00:34:36And the fight could come down to a pace of conditioning.
00:34:39Witherspoon trying to go downstairs and don't cover up while Page bangs away at the head.
00:34:47I think this fight is going to determine upon who can take the best body shot.
00:34:53They're just leaving on each other right now.
00:34:56Throwing a lot of punches.
00:34:57A lot of them landing on the arms and the gloves.
00:34:58The crowd doesn't like it, but this is still pretty much of a scientific going on here.
00:35:18Page is holding Witherspoon's left arm.
00:35:21Now Witherspoon punches free.
00:35:22Page is supposed to rely upon points.
00:35:26And Witherspoon's relied upon one big bomb.
00:35:29A lot of punches being thrown here.
00:35:30They have to take their toll at some point.
00:35:32Come on, Coach.
00:35:33Step back.
00:35:34Come on.
00:35:34I don't think these fighters are particularly tired yet.
00:35:45I think this is tactics here at the bell.
00:35:48And both fighters deciding to test each other's will and stamina and fortitude in that exchange
00:35:58on the ropes to see which one can be dominant in this fight.
00:36:02That was just a battle for dominance at that point in the fight.
00:36:18Get your feet right.
00:36:28Step back down on him so you can get leverage on your punches.
00:36:31All right, sir?
00:36:33So good.
00:36:37Come on, Coach.
00:36:39Come on, Coach.
00:36:41Come on.
00:36:48This is the fifth round.
00:36:50They come to the center of the ring.
00:36:51And we'll see with the tactics for this round.
00:36:53Actually, we've got four different fights so far through the first four rounds.
00:36:57But they've changed their tactics time and time again.
00:36:59Inside boxing.
00:37:01Page on the move.
00:37:02Page becomes a puncher.
00:37:05Witherspoon's chain is up.
00:37:07Witherspoon's corner told him that he had Page hurt in the corner in the fourth round.
00:37:22I didn't see that, if it was a fact.
00:37:25But some of the punches, because of the crowd's involvement, are really misleading.
00:37:34Good counterpunch by Page.
00:37:35Yeah, Witherspoon opened up.
00:37:49For Greg Page, I think he's doing the best thing trying to make Tim Witherspoon throw a punch
00:37:55and then correct his mistake.
00:37:58Because you saw that, but Witherspoon was trying to load up one big left hook.
00:38:02He needs a jab.
00:38:06His jab, he's getting closer, and he's able to land a better punch.
00:38:11Witherspoon getting just a little bit careless in the last couple of rounds.
00:38:15Here again is a man of dominance.
00:38:40And Greg Page getting a slight edge in here, I think.
00:38:43I want you to keep him up, and you keep him up too, okay, come on.
00:38:48That's again Mills Lane taking charge, telling both fighters to keep their punches out.
00:38:52You notice that Miller Lane's kept letting the guys know when those punch shots.
00:39:06The way they're punching, because they're both leaning over, they have a tendency to hit the loaded belt.
00:39:13That was a good right hand by Witherspoon.
00:39:15Certainly the best punch of this exchange on the ropes here.
00:39:22He had an uppercut.
00:39:24That was a beautiful uppercut by Tim Witherspoon.
00:39:28Page keeping him close.
00:39:30Might be hurt a little bit.
00:39:3215 seconds remaining here in the fifth round.
00:39:34Witherspoon holding it and then hitting it.
00:39:46At the bell.
00:39:49Thank you, sir.
00:39:50Thank you, sir.
00:39:50The rap on Tim Witherspoon used to be that he didn't punch enough.
00:40:02Angelo Dundee called him a union fighter.
00:40:04He would throw more than 20 punches in a round.
00:40:09He's a union fighter.
00:40:10He's upped his output.
00:40:12He's throwing 30 or 40 a round.
00:40:13Let's take a look at an uppercut in here at close quarters.
00:40:24This makes for a very tough and rugged fight, but not for a very exciting one, to say the least.
00:40:31Do you know what the end they're doing?
00:40:34I do a little bit of a little bit.
00:40:35One, two, man.
00:40:36Okay.
00:40:38Now switch it over to one, two.
00:40:39Ball game can be over.
00:40:41Switch it over.
00:40:42One, two.
00:40:43So the sixth round, and in Greg Page's corner, they said a couple of punches in the ball game could be over.
00:40:53One, two, check him down.
00:40:55Sounds easy, doesn't it?
00:40:56It does.
00:40:57You notice that Tim Witherspoon changed it up down to southpaw.
00:41:00He's ambidextrous, and he's effective because he punches well with both hands.
00:41:08I like those combinations by Greg Page.
00:41:10He goes to the head, and he dips hard to the bottom.
00:41:13But he took a good right hand from Witherspoon.
00:41:16Page has fought this fight with purpose, I think, on the ropes.
00:41:20Inside, Witherspoon changes the southpaw, and now he's changed it back to orthodox.
00:41:25That's what his corner told him to do two rounds ago.
00:41:30Witherspoon got the better of that.
00:41:35Very close fight so far.
00:41:37Because of the tempo of a fight, both fighters are starting to breathe heavily from their mouth,
00:41:56which shows signs of fatigue.
00:41:58Also, the amount of body shots being delivered by both guys.
00:42:03Witherspoon is effectively stepping away when they are in close quarters,
00:42:07and managing to get at least one punch in to the face of Greg Page.
00:42:12Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:42:15The command is marked.
00:42:16Number six round.
00:42:16He knows where Witherspoon keeps that right hand on the left side of his chin.
00:42:27What Page could do is he could figure jam and throw a left hook.
00:42:33Once again in the corner.
00:42:36Right hand actually just a glancing left hand that time by Witherspoon.
00:42:42Page was moving back with that punch.
00:42:44This is an opportunity where Witherspoon can take advantage of the fact that Page has become a stationary target.
00:42:51Worked up by his slowest movement now.
00:42:55Witherspoon runners had some success at stepping back and coming over with a right cross.
00:43:06A couple of battleships here.
00:43:08You see now Witherspoon has got to hit the body now.
00:43:18Very little damage being done here.
00:43:20There's just a lot of leaning going on.
00:43:24Good tickets told, though, and as you mentioned,
00:43:27with the weight advantage that Greg Page has,
00:43:29it could have an effect.
00:43:31But really it is Witherspoon that is leaning on Page,
00:43:42more than Page leaning on Witherspoon.
00:43:47End of the sixth round.
00:43:51We'll stay right with Tim Witherspoon.
00:43:53The feeling I get about this fight at this point is that,
00:43:57although it's a bit dull,
00:44:00Witherspoon is landing almost all of the heavy punches that I could see.
00:44:04He gets his body behind the punches.
00:44:07Short his height, Tim.
00:44:09Hey, Tim, you're on the inside, right?
00:44:11Start pulling your head around it.
00:44:13You know, pull it back, set it down.
00:44:14All right?
00:44:15Start pulling your head, then left hook goes.
00:44:17All right?
00:44:17Put some shots together, Tim.
00:44:19You're on the inside and you're waiting.
00:44:20What's that?
00:44:21Keep him in the center of the ring.
00:44:22Here's what?
00:44:24That's enough.
00:44:26You might get this.
00:44:29Okay, keep him in the center of the ring.
00:44:30Give him some water, Tim.
00:44:31You do it, bro.
00:44:31Show me, Tim.
00:44:32Show him how I do it, you feel it, okay?
00:44:34All right?
00:44:36Here.
00:44:37Here's Larry Holmes.
00:44:45I wonder how he's got this fight.
00:44:48Holmes, six rounds to none over both fighters.
00:44:51I think so.
00:44:52I think so.
00:44:53I don't think he really wants too much of either one of these guys, either.
00:45:00So this is the seventh round.
00:45:02It's been a fight fought in post-quarters.
00:45:04Witherspoon's quarter time with four combinations.
00:45:06Page's corner being very calm.
00:45:11Either way, fight.
00:45:17But Witherspoon clearly the heavier shot so far.
00:45:20But witherspoon, he tries to get back with an uppercut.
00:45:32Catches Page with a right and another left.
00:45:37And Page says, Barone.
00:45:39And one thing for sure, Barry, both guys can take some big shots.
00:45:42Yeah, they're both pretty fit.
00:45:44I would expect by this point, one or the other would be starting to get a little bit tired.
00:45:47That has not been the case.
00:45:49Come on, watch out.
00:45:59That long range for one of the few times in this fight.
00:46:02I noticed that both fighters' hands are dropping, although Greg Page's fight with his hands is pretty much down.
00:46:09It could be signs that, you know, they've both become arm-weary.
00:46:12Witherspoon's right hand is dropping to a certain extent.
00:46:15Watch for lead off right from Greg Page.
00:46:17That time by Witherspoon, but he took a right hand by Page.
00:46:29Page has always considered himself, actually, to be a counterpuncher.
00:46:32As a matter of fact, when Greg Page fought Jimmy Young, he said we're both counterpunchers, and that makes for a dogfight.
00:46:49Michael Katz of the New York Times said the crowd would have preferred Rin Tin Tin or Lassie.
00:46:53What they're doing, Barry, is, in fact, they hit each other with good shots.
00:46:57But that's all.
00:46:58They punch and they rest.
00:47:00They need to take advantage of it.
00:47:02A little blood inside the mouth of Tim Witherspoon.
00:47:05That could have a cumulative effect.
00:47:09Right hand a little short.
00:47:14Come on, get him up with this one.
00:47:16Come on.
00:47:20Good right hand by Witherspoon, but again, Page backs off, not hurt.
00:47:28I'm looking for a looping right hand by Tim Witherspoon.
00:47:32A lot of times, a lot of times, Page is in position to be hit by the shot.
00:47:42Page starting to punch a lot with his arms here.
00:47:44Not to say he's getting arm worried, but not quite as much snap, I don't think.
00:47:49Let's try to have a look at Tim Witherspoon's cut lip.
00:48:03It's probably an interior cut.
00:48:05It doesn't appear to be bothering him very much.
00:48:10Come on, let's put some punches on it.
00:48:14Let's take a look at one of the exchanges in that round right here.
00:48:18Hi, Tim.
00:48:22There's the left hand, a flush on the jaw of Page.
00:48:25Once again, he appears to be landing the heavier blows.
00:48:29How much the officials take that into account remains to be seen.
00:48:32This is the sort of fight where after eight, nine, ten tough rounds, one guy is just likely to collapse.
00:48:52Because they are receiving quite a bit of punishment for big men.
00:48:57A lot of punches being thrown in this fight.
00:49:00By both men.
00:49:03Witherspoon, seemingly the heavier armament here.
00:49:06But you never know.
00:49:15Bring 5,000 people to the fight.
00:49:17You're going to see 5,000 different views of the same fight.
00:49:20That's how Page stepped on Witherspoon's cut.
00:49:22Backed him off at Witherspoon with a whistling right hand.
00:49:25Page is able to move his chin just time enough to get away from those bombs.
00:49:30One step back, one step back, one step back.
00:49:32The punches that are thrown by Tim Witherspoon are coming like missiles.
00:49:37And they have been just grazing Page's chin.
00:49:51Page back up on his toes.
00:49:52First time in a couple of rounds, he's dead now.
00:50:02It was a left hand by Page when he did have Witherspoon open, and it didn't seem to have much on it.
00:50:19Greg Page has been very spectacular.
00:50:21He throws a left kick to the head and doubles it to the body.
00:50:24That's the halfway mark, we're all at number 8.
00:50:31Chopping right hand at the top of the head.
00:50:37I think that tells the whole story.
00:50:42Both of you keep doing that stop and you're out of here.
00:50:45Now we see a little bit of anger and frustration.
00:50:52Well, Mills Lane really controlling the fight, though, very well, I think.
00:50:55I think he's done a fantastic job, especially two big guys.
00:51:05Page working at long range a little bit more in this round than he has.
00:51:08I would think Greg Page would be effective at long range, actually.
00:51:14He's very effective, especially when he's moving and giving the head and body points, Barry.
00:51:20He's not left jab, especially.
00:51:34At the moment, it's looking perhaps like there could be a little bit of fatigue setting into Tim Witherspoon.
00:51:38This punch just doesn't seem to have quite the snap, they don't.
00:51:43Coming toward the end of the eighth round.
00:51:44Okay, now come on.
00:51:46One more time.
00:51:46One more time is going to cost you.
00:51:48Come on, get him on.
00:51:48Come on.
00:51:51Let's see how Greg Page is holding up under the fire.
00:51:58Take a look at that punch on the break.
00:52:02Something happened before that that I think got Witherspoon upset.
00:52:05It just hit Page on the shoulder blade, it looked like.
00:52:11It didn't catch him clean, and Page didn't seem to be bothered by it very much.
00:52:16I think Mills Lane was more bothered by it.
00:52:18The uppercut really made Tim Witherspoon angry.
00:52:23There's 24-year-old Aaron Snow.
00:52:31Come on, James.
00:52:32Put some answers together.
00:52:33Tim's right in there.
00:52:34Start hooking it.
00:52:35Okay.
00:52:37At this point in the fight, I have Witherspoon ahead four rounds to two and one even.
00:52:46Largely because he's been the aggressor and landed the heavier blows.
00:52:52I'm sorry, four rounds, four, three, and one.
00:52:55And looking at Ray Leonard's scorecard, if you don't mind by saying,
00:52:58Hey, Ray, you've got it dead even right now.
00:53:00And I do want to mention one thing before we get too far into this round.
00:53:02At the very end of the last round, Mills Lane has said to Tim Witherspoon,
00:53:05if I have to tell you to keep up one more time, it's going to cost you.
00:53:08And in a fight that's this close, it could really cost it.
00:53:11I think it's a difficult fight to really score because what happens,
00:53:16Witherspoon gets inside, his punches are landing more effectively.
00:53:21But what you have to keep in mind is the fact that Ray Page is throwing combinations.
00:53:25And remember, this is a 12-round fight, not a 15-round fight.
00:53:29So we're getting down to Never Never Land here.
00:53:38Tim Witherspoon breathing through his mouth quite a lot now.
00:53:49And Greg Page, to his credit, toting around 239 and a half pounds,
00:53:53still seems like he's got a little bit left here.
00:54:00All right, let's sit back.
00:54:01Let's sit back, Greg.
00:54:02Come on, come on.
00:54:03Come on.
00:54:08Both fighters are really putting a lot behind their left hoops.
00:54:17And it's nearly throwing them off balance.
00:54:20That was a good left hand by Page.
00:54:22And a right hand behind him.
00:54:24And for the first time, Page has Witherspoon hurt.
00:54:32I think Witherspoon's a little bit tired here, Ray.
00:54:35He's really puffing hard now out of his mouth.
00:54:37That old shot's thrown by.
00:54:39And a combination by Witherspoon has Page against the rugs.
00:54:43But he shakes his head.
00:54:45You really can't start to say anything because what happens,
00:54:47the other fight retaliates and comes on strong.
00:54:51Page lands a series of punches.
00:54:53And all of a sudden, Tim Witherspoon retaliates with a few combinations of his arm.
00:54:58Witherspoon had been breathing in a labored fashion.
00:55:04Trying to catch his breath whenever they're at long range.
00:55:06Now he leans on Greg Page.
00:55:09And then just when it looked like he was starting to be all done dancing,
00:55:11he came back with a good combination.
00:55:13What Witherspoon's doing?
00:55:13He's laying inside.
00:55:15Now he's getting a win.
00:55:16He's getting a breather, rather.
00:55:18And he tries to load up.
00:55:21You see how he waits?
00:55:23And he starts to punch.
00:55:24Backs Page off again.
00:55:25Going down toward the 15-second mark of inning round nine.
00:55:38Page dropped his left hand.
00:55:40And Witherspoon was just a little short with an overhead right.
00:55:42Here they are in center ring where Page had...
00:55:47...landed his probably his best shot of the fight.
00:56:15And then moments later, while Page was thinking about that,
00:56:21Witherspoon came right back with a four-punch flurry.
00:56:24Two of the punches landing solidly.
00:56:26We're going into round ten.
00:56:34All right, come on.
00:56:37Come on, let's go.
00:56:49Tenth round, and in Page's corner, they were saying,
00:56:51You've got to have this one, Greg.
00:56:55So there could be at least a bit of a sense of urgency in Page's corner.
00:56:59It's not to say that he's out of the fight.
00:57:00He's not by any stretch of the imagination.
00:57:03And, in fact, could be ahead of the fight.
00:57:04You know, I think why Page's corner is so concerned
00:57:07is the fact that Witherspoon was able to finish around very strongly,
00:57:11which has a great influence on the judges.
00:57:13To be honest with you, I have never been able
00:57:17to figure out the judges in the city of Las Vegas.
00:57:21Well, it depends on what they're looking for.
00:57:23Clean boxing, aggressiveness.
00:57:26Come on, come on.
00:57:28I really don't mean that necessarily in a derogatory sense.
00:57:30I've just never been able to get a fix on what's important to them.
00:57:32Left hand by Witherspoon.
00:57:34Witherspoon is going upstairs now more than he was before.
00:57:56And I can't help but wonder if perhaps the reason for that
00:57:58is not that Hales Landon said enough is enough.
00:58:01You've got to stop it.
00:58:02You're going to lose points or even a round.
00:58:05Neither man is really marked at all.
00:58:07Slight bleeding inside the mouth of Tim Witherspoon.
00:58:10Witherspoon now is trying to throw straight right hands,
00:58:13which is something really uncommon for him.
00:58:16He normally throw overhand rights, and most times they land.
00:58:20But with Page, he's having a little problem
00:58:21because Page has been somewhat abusive to the head.
00:58:26This is something you have to watch, Berg.
00:58:35Inside, Greg Payne has thrown a combination.
00:58:38Not big punches, but he's throwing punches.
00:58:42Payne's going downstairs now more than he was earlier.
00:58:47Popping an occasional uppercut.
00:58:49That's an uppercut by Witherspoon.
00:59:03Page going up and then down.
00:59:06All right, we'll step back.
00:59:07Come on, come on, come on, step back.
00:59:08Now, when Page was using his weight,
00:59:10he was actually just pushing to the women's move back.
00:59:13Good combination by Greg Page, scoring to the face of Tim Witherspoon.
00:59:24And Witherspoon leans on Page.
00:59:26Both these fighters, obviously, very fit coming in here.
00:59:29Excellent condition on both fighters' part.
00:59:31The question about Page's family endurance,
00:59:33I'm sure it's been answered.
00:59:34Ten seconds remaining here.
00:59:38This is the tenth round.
00:59:40Come on, let it go, come on.
00:59:46Either fighter seems desperately tired.
00:59:48In fact, of the two,
00:59:50I would have to say Greg Page is probably the pressure.
00:59:52Well, the winner of this fight
00:59:54is the one who's going to be able to dig down
00:59:56and come up with something extra in the last two rounds.
00:59:59There's an old expression,
01:00:01cut yourself a new piece of bait and fish a little deeper.
01:00:03They're going to have to go inside themselves
01:00:06to come up with something.
01:00:08All good, Dave.
01:00:08You got one hand.
01:00:10Ready, sir?
01:00:11This thing's a Tim Witherspoon's corner.
01:00:16You got two more.
01:00:16You need to notice how to make it.
01:00:18Let it go.
01:00:20You know what I'm saying?
01:00:21Six minutes.
01:00:23Hey, six minutes.
01:00:26Not too much.
01:00:26That's not.
01:00:28Six minutes.
01:00:30Give me six minutes, man.
01:00:31That's all I ask for.
01:00:32That's not.
01:00:33Don't give me, man.
01:00:34Come on.
01:00:35Give me six minutes, man.
01:00:37Give me six minutes.
01:00:37Come on.
01:00:38My impression is that because Witherspoon
01:00:40has been the aggressor throughout the fight,
01:00:43that he's expended a little bit more energy.
01:00:47Yeah, you sense a little bit more fanaticism
01:00:49coming to the corner of Tim Witherspoon
01:00:51than you do from Greg Page.
01:00:53Overhand right again by Witherspoon.
01:00:56He seemed to take quite the toll
01:00:58it had earlier on it.
01:00:59I'm sure both fighters,
01:01:01they realize that these last two rounds
01:01:03are deciding factors in this fight.
01:01:05It's been a really close fight.
01:01:07It's been this way, that way,
01:01:10and the fact these two rounds are very important.
01:01:13Been a good fight, actually.
01:01:14It's been a very tactical fight.
01:01:16And it's called a few boos from the crowd,
01:01:20but I'm not sure they're justified boos.
01:01:22no knockdowns, no marks on either man, we're in the 11th round, good combination by Page,
01:01:48however, Bills Lane says, one of them was low, Greg, Greg Page, how he's dropped out,
01:01:58and sends those 10-wits from game opportunity to put it back, not much action in here, crowd misleading you just a little bit here,
01:02:11Page leans on Witherspoon, they'll come back to the center of the lane,
01:02:18there's a right hand by Witherspoon, snapping the head of Greg Page back,
01:02:32all right, one step back, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on,
01:02:44the next round, both fighters must be really aggressive,
01:02:55yeah, it really is going to come down in the last round, or it seems as though it should come down in the last round,
01:03:05a fight like this, of course, is such a subjective thing, one judge could see it completely different from another,
01:03:11and rightfully so, that's true, because he can really make the case for either one of these guys,
01:03:16see, Greg is still throwing punches, but Witherspoon's punches like bombs,
01:03:30there's a good right hand, and a combination by Witherspoon,
01:03:35and he takes the shot from Page, and goes against the ropes himself,
01:03:39very good combination, maybe the best of the fight by Witherspoon,
01:03:43Page is right back though, the starch has not gone out of him,
01:03:45that was a great, great, no more combination, two-crunch combination to the head,
01:04:03Witherspoon, it might have won him around,
01:04:05there's nothing else decisive that happened in that round,
01:04:08once again, I should point out,
01:04:12King Witherspoon has been the aggressor throughout,
01:04:16in the past when we had questioned the scoring of Las Vegas officials,
01:04:21it's usually because they've given the aggressor too much credit,
01:04:27there's the right, followed by the left,
01:04:29three minutes of boxing left,
01:04:53this could decide the WBC Heavyweight Championship,
01:04:55Larry Holmes watching his title,
01:05:00be won by someone,
01:05:01and not lost by the other,
01:05:04Witherspoon gets the first combination of the final round,
01:05:07as much as you have to be the aggressor,
01:05:15you can't get careless here either,
01:05:16That is very much similar to another fight that we saw,
01:05:27I would say this fight is very similar to Norton Holmes,
01:05:30and who wants it the most?
01:05:33And these guys are throwing everything,
01:05:36they're fighting their hearts out,
01:05:37you have to take a hit off to both of them,
01:05:39I mean they've really put up a great display of championship material,
01:05:42and to pick up on Larry Merchant's phrase of a while ago,
01:05:46they are both cut and bait,
01:05:48and they are both fishing deep,
01:05:49Witherspoon ended the 11th round,
01:06:07with a combination,
01:06:08it started the 12th round with a combination,
01:06:10we'll see if it has a lasting memory,
01:06:12well because of the closeness of this fight,
01:06:15I would be more aggressive if I was Greg Page,
01:06:17on the ropes,
01:06:20that's where a good portion of this fight has been fought,
01:06:23both men tired,
01:06:27but neither exceedingly so,
01:06:28I've been waiting all night Barry,
01:06:37for a lead off right,
01:06:39from either Witherspoon or Page,
01:06:42but I've been seeing a lot of left hooks thrown,
01:06:44both men have been hurt,
01:06:45but neither has been in any danger of going down,
01:06:48neither man has marked,
01:06:49slack cut inside the mouth of Tim Witherspoon,
01:06:51hasn't seemed to bother him a great deal,
01:06:53and in fact has not shown too much blood,
01:06:55for the last few rounds,
01:06:57it's unfortunate that the Hares would be a loser,
01:07:00and I'm sure a rematch,
01:07:01again it's Witherspoon,
01:07:03Witherspoon really more aggressive,
01:07:06as he has been throughout the fight,
01:07:07it could be the difference,
01:07:08Witherspoon's really starting to dig now,
01:07:13he's working the body,
01:07:18Page still on his toes,
01:07:20trying to come around with the left hand,
01:07:21couldn't do it,
01:07:22caught Witherspoon on the arms,
01:07:24there's the story,
01:07:2620 seconds remaining in the fight,
01:07:28even now they can reach down,
01:07:30and it pulls the judges,
01:07:31Witherspoon to the left hand,
01:07:32head to head,
01:07:40shoulder to shoulder,
01:07:40that's where it's been fought,
01:07:42that looks like it's going to be where it ends,
01:07:44five seconds remaining,
01:07:46and this is when it's over,
01:07:48I'm not sure it wasn't over five seconds earlier,
01:07:59great fight,
01:08:00no matter what way you look at it,
01:08:01great fight,
01:08:02it was a dramatic fight,
01:08:05very fast paced first,
01:08:06first five,
01:08:07six rounds,
01:08:08Witherspoon stayed aggressive,
01:08:10Greg Page proved,
01:08:11it appears wrong,
01:08:12that he couldn't move,
01:08:13and that he didn't have the stamina and endurance,
01:08:15and the last round,
01:08:17displayed a great deal of heart,
01:08:19and determination,
01:08:20well they always said,
01:08:21that the wrap,
01:08:22if any on Greg Page,
01:08:23was his stamina,
01:08:24we can forget about that wrap,
01:08:26for sure,
01:08:27and plus he was on his toes,
01:08:28I think you have to keep that in mind,
01:08:30he was on his toes,
01:08:31so now,
01:08:35it's in the hands of the judges,
01:08:36and which way they go,
01:08:39I couldn't really make a guess,
01:08:41it's a close fight,
01:08:42it's a really close fight,
01:08:43Barry and I,
01:08:44I think the way the judges may look at it,
01:08:45as far as,
01:08:46who,
01:08:47who should win this fight,
01:08:48is who was the most aggressive,
01:08:50you know the other factor too,
01:08:53Tim Witherspoon had a very close fight here,
01:08:55with Larry Holmes,
01:08:56or a lot of people thought,
01:08:57Witherspoon should have won,
01:08:59that fight,
01:09:00and he didn't,
01:09:01and I can't help but wonder,
01:09:02if tucked away in the back,
01:09:03of somebody's heads is,
01:09:04let's make an amend perhaps,
01:09:05right now,
01:09:06let's go up to the ring announcer,
01:09:07Chuck Hall,
01:09:07we will get the official decision,
01:09:09here's Chuck,
01:09:10Ladies and gentlemen,
01:09:13we have a majority decision,
01:09:17split decision,
01:09:20Judge Chuck Minker scores,
01:09:22114 page,
01:09:25114 Witherspoon,
01:09:30Judge Jerry Ross scores,
01:09:32117,
01:09:35111,
01:09:37and Judge Lou Tabat scores,
01:09:40117,
01:09:42111,
01:09:44for the winner,
01:09:46and new,
01:09:47WBC heavyweight champion of the world,
01:09:50terrible,
01:09:51Tim Witherspoon,
01:09:53well it was as we expected,
01:09:57a strange scoring system,
01:09:59two judges had it very lock-sided,
01:10:01and one judge had it dead even,
01:10:03I had the fight,
01:10:05scored closer,
01:10:06and I think what they looked at,
01:10:08was the aggressiveness,
01:10:09of Tim Witherspoon,
01:10:10but also you have to look at the fact that,
01:10:12Greg Page,
01:10:13threw a lot of combinations,
01:10:15a great fight,
01:10:16by both fighters,
01:10:17it was a great fight,
01:10:18Greg Page has no reason,
01:10:19to hang his head,
01:10:19Tim Witherspoon,
01:10:20collapsing into the arms,
01:10:22of his handlers,
01:10:23great emotional release,
01:10:24I'm sure,
01:10:25for Tim Witherspoon,
01:10:26Larry Merchant is trying to get near him,
01:10:27as soon as he does,
01:10:28we will go up,
01:10:29to have a word at the winner,
01:10:30that's Carl King,
01:10:32the son of Don King,
01:10:34and the acting manager,
01:10:36of Tim Witherspoon,
01:10:37hugging his,
01:10:38charge,
01:10:39and doing so,
01:10:40with good reason,
01:10:40he fought a gallant fight,
01:10:42you can't question,
01:10:43the fact that he won the fight,
01:10:44but the other side of the coin,
01:10:45is if Greg Page had won,
01:10:47you wouldn't be able,
01:10:47to question that either,
01:10:49that's true Barry,
01:10:51and that's reason for judges,
01:10:52so a very interesting,
01:10:57judgment on the part,
01:10:59of the three officials,
01:11:00114,
01:11:01114,
01:11:02and then two judges,
01:11:03had it,
01:11:03117,
01:11:04111,
01:11:04let's go to Larry Merchant,
01:11:05now who's with the winner,
01:11:06Larry,
01:11:07all right,
01:11:11Tim Witherspoon,
01:11:12congratulations,
01:11:13on being the champion,
01:11:14thank you,
01:11:15why did you win the fight,
01:11:16because I had to,
01:11:17good determination,
01:11:18I trained hard,
01:11:20I did a lot of training,
01:11:21and I won it bad,
01:11:23why were you leaning on him,
01:11:24and him on you,
01:11:25so much of the fight,
01:11:26he was holding me in,
01:11:28because I knew,
01:11:29if I would have took him,
01:11:29in the center of the ring,
01:11:30I would have beat him,
01:11:32I would have beat him on point,
01:11:33I would beat him bad,
01:11:35okay,
01:11:36okay,
01:11:38your daughter,
01:11:38yeah,
01:11:38that's her,
01:11:39the net,
01:11:40come on,
01:11:40watch out,
01:11:41let's see,
01:11:43you work very hard,
01:11:45on his body,
01:11:46right,
01:11:47is that your plan,
01:11:48right,
01:11:48right,
01:11:49to slow him down,
01:11:50and do,
01:11:51bolt to the head,
01:11:52and play the rounds,
01:11:53did you feel,
01:11:54that you ever hurt him,
01:11:55yes,
01:11:56I hurt him every round,
01:11:57every round,
01:11:57he was holding me,
01:11:58into the rope,
01:11:58so he could try,
01:11:59to score points,
01:12:00so,
01:12:00I tried to pull him off,
01:12:02so I tried to pull him off,
01:12:02so he could box,
01:12:03in the center of the ring,
01:12:03because I knew,
01:12:04he knew he could,
01:12:04I could beat him,
01:12:05in the center of the ring,
01:12:06it seemed that you had,
01:12:09the meaner intentions,
01:12:10on every one of your punches,
01:12:12that you were trying,
01:12:13to hurt him,
01:12:13I was trying to hurt him,
01:12:15like I said,
01:12:16he was pulling me in on the ropes,
01:12:17and holding me in,
01:12:18and trying to score points,
01:12:19so I,
01:12:19later round,
01:12:20I just laid back,
01:12:21and told him,
01:12:21to come off the ropes,
01:12:22what do you think,
01:12:23about the future,
01:12:24what do you want to do,
01:12:25in the immediate future,
01:12:27by me winning the belt,
01:12:29I'm going to be,
01:12:29the best champion,
01:12:30there ever was,
01:12:31condition wise,
01:12:34intelligent wise,
01:12:34all round wise,
01:12:36thank you so much,
01:12:37thank you Larry,
01:12:38Tim Witherspoon,
01:12:39another champion,
01:12:41from Philadelphia,
01:12:42back to ringside,
01:12:43okay,
01:12:43Larry Merchant,
01:12:44also another champion,
01:12:45from Philadelphia,
01:12:47Ray Leonard,
01:12:48let me ask you,
01:12:49will the boxing community,
01:12:50accept,
01:12:51Tim Witherspoon,
01:12:53as a heavyweight champion,
01:12:54of the world,
01:12:55I'm sure they will,
01:12:57because it was such a display,
01:12:58of championship material,
01:13:00from both fights,
01:13:01I'm very,
01:13:02very happy,
01:13:03for Tim Witherspoon,
01:13:05and very proud,
01:13:06of Greg Page,
01:13:06I mean,
01:13:07they display,
01:13:08what makes true champions,
01:13:10you know,
01:13:10people said,
01:13:12that in the fight,
01:13:12with Larry Holmes,
01:13:13it was kind of a fluke,
01:13:14Tim Witherspoon,
01:13:15was a kid,
01:13:15who really didn't belong there,
01:13:16in the first place,
01:13:17and all of a sudden,
01:13:17he came along,
01:13:18and he gave Larry Holmes,
01:13:19all he wanted,
01:13:20I think tonight,
01:13:20he really went out,
01:13:21and proved that,
01:13:22that one was no fluke,
01:13:22and his future,
01:13:23really is very much,
01:13:24ahead of him,
01:13:24well,
01:13:24the last two rounds,
01:13:26was evident,
01:13:27that Tim Witherspoon,
01:13:28was qualified,
01:13:29he really took the fight,
01:13:30to Greg Page,
01:13:31and I'm sure his people,
01:13:32even though they said,
01:13:33there was a lot of inexperience,
01:13:34in his corner,
01:13:34I'm sure his people,
01:13:35told him,
01:13:36you got to go out there,
01:13:36and you got to win it,
01:13:37you can't sit back,
01:13:38and wait for the other guy,
01:13:39to lose it,
01:13:39well the inexperience,
01:13:40is a factor,
01:13:41but I think the natural ability,
01:13:42of a Tim Witherspoon,
01:13:44and the sheer determination,
01:13:45and drive,
01:13:46paid off,
01:13:47well Greg Page,
01:13:48is the loser of the fight,
01:13:49but really,
01:13:49I hate to use that word,
01:13:50because he really did lose it,
01:13:51he shouldn't be hanging his head,
01:13:53right now,
01:13:53he is with Larry Merchant,
01:13:54so let's go to Larry Merchant,
01:13:56with Greg Page,
01:13:57I'm with Greg Page,
01:14:00Greg,
01:14:01why do you feel,
01:14:02you lost the fight?
01:14:03It's all in the system,
01:14:05I don't have no kind,
01:14:07no comments about nothing,
01:14:08the only thing I say,
01:14:08it's in the system,
01:14:09you can ask Don Keene,
01:14:10and the judge of that,
01:14:11I don't know,
01:14:12you know,
01:14:12I don't have nothing,
01:14:13the raggothurty said,
01:14:14about Witherspoon,
01:14:15I don't have nothing,
01:14:15the raggothty said,
01:14:16anyway,
01:14:16he's just a system,
01:14:19it seemed,
01:14:20it seemed from ringside,
01:14:21that he was the aggressor,
01:14:23throughout,
01:14:23and probably that's why,
01:14:24he got the decision,
01:14:25he might have been aggressive,
01:14:26but he didn't land more punches,
01:14:27than I did,
01:14:27he didn't,
01:14:28don't you think he landed,
01:14:29harder punches,
01:14:30well harder punches,
01:14:32punches,
01:14:32that doesn't make a difference,
01:14:33it's a case of scoring,
01:14:35like if that's a case,
01:14:36if somebody knocking somebody out,
01:14:38every time,
01:14:39so be it,
01:14:40you know,
01:14:41this,
01:14:41this hard deal,
01:14:42in this boxing scene,
01:14:43is,
01:14:43you know,
01:14:44it's,
01:14:45you know,
01:14:45you can win the fight,
01:14:46by points,
01:14:47but you got to beat the hell out of somebody,
01:14:49pardon my language,
01:14:51but,
01:14:51you know,
01:14:52he got the,
01:14:52he got the nod,
01:14:53so what the hell,
01:14:54you know,
01:14:54I get it.
01:14:55what are your feelings about him,
01:14:56as a fighter,
01:14:57now that you've gone through with him?
01:14:58Just like I said at first,
01:14:59I don't feel nothing,
01:15:00he's a good fighter,
01:15:01he's a good fighter,
01:15:01and,
01:15:02I figured out,
01:15:04I thought I'd beat him,
01:15:05and,
01:15:05why would,
01:15:07why would the system be against Greg Page,
01:15:09more than against him with his group?
01:15:11I don't know,
01:15:11you ask,
01:15:11you ask Don King,
01:15:12and everyone else that,
01:15:13I don't know,
01:15:14you know,
01:15:14I can't get into that,
01:15:15because I don't know,
01:15:16I've been going through hell with boxing,
01:15:17ever since I'm through,
01:15:18this is my,
01:15:19you know,
01:15:19right now,
01:15:20this is my,
01:15:21this is my retirement,
01:15:22man,
01:15:22I'm through with it,
01:15:23because I've been going through hell,
01:15:24my whole damn career,
01:15:25I'm through with this bullshit.
01:15:28Thank you,
01:15:28Greg Page,
01:15:29I guess he's through with this stuff,
01:15:32and back to ringside again.
01:15:34Okay,
01:15:34thanks Larry Merchant,
01:15:35well,
01:15:35retirement,
01:15:36everybody seems to talk about it,
01:15:37in this case,
01:15:37I feel 100% certain,
01:15:39we'll see Greg Page in the ring again.
01:15:41I'm sure,
01:15:41Greg Page has nothing to feel bad about,
01:15:44I think he's qualified,
01:15:45he should be back.
01:15:46Greg Page,
01:15:46in fact,
01:15:47has said since 1981,
01:15:48we've been taking it one step at a time,
