00:00:00tonight some of the best talent in the heavyweight division has made its way to the home of world
00:00:09championship boxing las vegas nevada first out of philadelphia pennsylvania the reigning wbc
00:00:16heavyweight champion tim witherspoon defends his crown for the first time since his less than
00:00:21spectacular decision over greg page the unknown champion would love to earn the respect for the
00:00:27boxing world his opponent was born and raised in pontiac michigan the only blemish on the undefeated
00:00:34record of pinkman thomas was a hard-fought draw with wba heavyweight champion jerry coxia
00:00:40tonight thomas can write the final triumphant chapter in a hard luck story of survival
00:00:45but before the wbc title fight the saga continues for the much maligned heavyweight from louisville
00:00:53greg page now he tries to regain his old form as a legitimate contender they may question page's
00:00:59waistline not his skills his opponent is yet another outstanding prospect out of boxing's hotbed of
00:01:07talent philadelphia david bay is an undefeated contender with the biggest opportunity of his
00:01:12young career a win over page would certainly signal a rising star tonight in las vegas the
00:01:19dormant heavyweight division comes to life on hbo
00:01:22you're the bastard
00:01:32first blank page and david bay fight for the usba heavyweight title and then tim witherspoon
00:01:57defends his wbc crowd against pinkland thomas
00:02:00once again we have migrated to the hot desert sun we're live from the riviera hotel in las vegas
00:02:14nevada hbo sports presents world championship boxing
00:02:19first greg page defends his usba heavyweight title against an up-and-coming contender david bay
00:02:30then time permitting we'll show you highlights of former wba heavyweight champion michael doak's
00:02:35comeback fight against mike jameson and finally in the main event wbc heavyweight champion tim witherspoon
00:02:41defends his crown against the highly touted pinkland thomas many feel these heavyweights possess the
00:02:47best raw talent in this most celebrated of all divisions and tonight this converted convention
00:02:52center is the site as we all witness who among these boxing giants will reach their full potential
00:02:59and ability hello everybody i'm barry tomkins welcome to the riviera in las vegas these people
00:03:06coming to watch a whole lot of boxing 70 rounds to be exact with me once again the champ sugar ray
00:03:12leonard ray interesting 70 rounds of boxing mostly heavyweights and i think this is the first time that
00:03:16i can remember in the years that you and i have worked together where there really is a question as
00:03:20to who is going to win every fight well this is a great card barry in fact we should see a lot of
00:03:24action and possibly a couple of upsets what we have tonight is really champions and former champions
00:03:30searching for a little bit more recognition and a good win tonight will definitely help them out
00:03:35on the other hand we have challengers who are searching for one thing and that is the title
00:03:39well there's no question about that we're going to have title fights and we're going to see just
00:03:43about everybody who is anybody amongst the up-and-comers in the heavyweight division with
00:03:46us for expert commentary once more as he always is larry merchant larry the heavyweight picture it
00:03:51seems has always been muddled but this time it's not only muddled it seems big and muddled well
00:03:56anytime you have three champions barry it really means that you don't have any larry holmes is a
00:04:00great champion fought everybody beat everybody but he started to lose credibility when he stopped
00:04:05fighting credible opponents jerry cotia won the invisible part of the heavyweight title and proceeded
00:04:11to make it more invisible by not defending it i believe that these two fighters tonight thomas
00:04:17and witherspoon are the best young heavyweights around that the winner will emerge in about a year
00:04:22as the heavyweight all right before we talk about thomas and witherspoon let's start at the top and
00:04:26the top in this case greg page and david bay now greg page is a guy who it seems has been on the
00:04:32threshold his entire career once more he is in a very familiar role the role as he always has been
00:04:39the bridesmaid
00:04:44this is greg page a young heavyweight whose career has been plagued with a series of ups and downs
00:04:50he's probably the most all-round talented fighter out there but he's his own worst enemy
00:04:56greg page weighs in as a fighter he's battled more than just his opponents in the ring he's had an
00:05:02ongoing bout with a weight problem and the attitude that the world is against him this is my retirement
00:05:08man i'm through with it because i've been going through hell my whole damn career i'm through this
00:05:13he began his pro career as a new face promising to become the next muhammad ali he has shown speed
00:05:20quickness courage crushing power and the ability to take a punch he moves with the rhythm of a
00:05:24natural boxer there is still some polishing to be done the young heavyweight took his talent to the
00:05:31ring and began to fight he suffered some disappointment it was this 10 round loss to trevor burbick
00:05:37but he seemed to get back on the track etching out a record of 23 and 1 with 18 knockouts
00:05:47but all along experts questioned his desire
00:05:55he wants to be a champion but doesn't want to work for him in the witherspoon fight he didn't fight
00:05:59enough he laid against the ropes and took too many punches
00:06:04following a poor showing against tim witherspoon in front of a booing las vegas crowd
00:06:10boxing world asked what would become of greg payne
00:06:21fighters go through trials and tribulations he's got a lot of talent and i feel this kid is to be
00:06:25reckoned with the annals of greg page are not closed after the loss to tim witherspoon you stated
00:06:32that you felt that the number of punches was more important than how hard the punches landed were
00:06:38have you changed your mind about that well uh it's one thing i want to do and i want to get this out
00:06:44i want to apologize for that little uh a little tantrum i had that night you know i was a little a little
00:06:50upset about a couple of things because there were some things that were said and the way the whole thing
00:06:55was handled it wasn't right it wasn't professional and i knew i didn't fight properly i know i didn't
00:07:00train correctly and i know i didn't do a lot of things i wasn't supposed to do and i said i was
00:07:05going to retire i said i went to a whole lot of different things but now i'm back i never went anywhere
00:07:11um i trained real hard i worked real hard i worked diligently and i've done everything jinx had me to do
00:07:16and you know there's nothing else no one can ask for me i have done everything thank you
00:07:26tonight greg page faces a relative unknown david bay the fact that he stopped george chaplin one of
00:07:33the best defensive boxers in the division is probably the single most impressive thing about david bay
00:07:37george chaplin went 10 rounds with break page and lost the decision but in his fight against david bay
00:07:46the judges never reached the decision after four rounds the referee jumped in and said no more
00:07:53among a sparse heavyweight division david bay is one of the few legitimate contenders he's a good
00:07:58boxer and very agile for a big man on the undercard of page witherspoon they won an impressive
00:08:04decision over leroy caldwell tonight david bay and great page battle for recognition in a division
00:08:10that's wide open are you saying you think your discipline is what will win for you in the end
00:08:17yes because grubby he's been around for a while he's probably tired now you know going to work that's
00:08:21like you're going to get used to it he can do it even easier now the best way to do the work that's
00:08:25a lazy man he know how to get things done right because you're a lazy person you know what i mean
00:08:28and i feel though he's lazy he don't he trained but he's taking it easily you know because the training
00:08:33do hurt i mean you have to work it work it i run like six miles anymore i run i run the mess out
00:08:37my running partners like randy fleming al styles some guys they can't keep up with me i mean they
00:08:42really can't they run i run six my do like six minute miles five miles i'm a good runner i got
00:08:47good stamina people don't think i have the stamina but i got plenty of stamina if it goes for around
00:08:51they will see it page won't be able to keep up with me all right let me ask you red leonard does he
00:08:56have the stamina he's a guy who historically has done his best in the early rounds well barry it's not a
00:09:00physical but it's a psychological obstacle and if bay can block it out and he's in great shape he'll
00:09:05be just fine so he's gonna have to get out there and go do it quickly let's take a look at the tail
00:09:09of the tape for this one between david bay and greg page and there it is and they are very comparable
00:09:13now one thing of note i think is that page came in at 233 and that is one of the lighter weights that
00:09:19he's come in at he was 221 when he lost to trevor burbick didn't want to be quite that light 224 for
00:09:24bay common opponent only george chaplin and page had a much tougher time with him than did david bay
00:09:30who knocked his man out in four rounds so that's the only common opponent little to choose between
00:09:34the two of them youth really pretty much on the side of either man 25 years old for greg page 27
00:09:40years old for david bay they're both on the threshold as we mentioned a win tonight of course
00:09:44would catapult either man very much into the title picture david bay undefeated in 13 fights not very
00:09:49much experience 11 knockouts he was once 290 pounds believe it or not greg page on the other
00:09:54side of the coin 23 victories he has just two defeats he has 18 knockouts in those 25 fights so
00:10:01that's the story of this one and now let's get to chuck call the ring announcer for the official
00:10:05announcement good evening ladies and gentlemen welcome to the superstar theater of the riviera hotel
00:10:13where tonight don king productions in association with the riviera presents the blockbuster a night of

00:10:31contest of the evening by the nevada state athletic commission the judges are dave moretti
00:10:36lou tabbitt and chuck minker the timekeeper is jane broadfoot counting at the knockdown mike
00:10:42licella and the referee is joey curtis this is a featured event of the evening 12 rounds of boxing
00:10:51for the usba heavyweight championship introducing in the blue corner the challenger rated number six by
00:11:00the wbc fighting out of philadelphia pennsylvania weighing in at 224 and one half pounds he is undefeated
00:11:08in his professional career with 13 wins no defeats and 11 ko's ladies and gentlemen introducing david
00:11:17and in the red corner from louisville kentucky he weighed in at 233 pounds his professional record
00:11:31consists of 23 wins two defeats with 18 ko's he's rated number one by the wbc in the world introducing the usba heavyweight champion
00:11:42greg payne
00:11:47i gave you instructions in the dressing room remember in case of a knockdown i want you to go
00:11:54into the neutral corner i want you to stay there until i tell you to come out watch your low blows
00:11:59watch your heads when i tap you on the back just break clean understand if you got one hand free you
00:12:04can keep them banging away okay shake hands let's have a good fight come on that's it
00:12:11larry merchant a couple of notes before we get started here greg page comes in mom and dad on
00:12:15his trunks he looks very fit much more so than the last time we saw him and the other point we just
00:12:19touched upon david bay at one time was 290 pounds yeah we saw him as an amateur at 270 he was a terrific
00:12:26amateur but he knew he had to lose a lot of weight and he's lost over 50 pounds in order to be able to
00:12:32fight good pros at a professional tempo for 10 or more rounds he's very determined very disciplined
00:12:38as the loss of weight shows the kind of things that have been absent from greg page up to now
00:12:44it's a good right hand by greg page as bay tried to be the aggressor and page caught him on the way in
00:12:49it james morton is very high uh trying to break page very high on greg page he feels that page
00:12:58now has his mind together and he will be more effective now in his career anybody knows james
00:13:03morton you do of course he was in your corner ray for all those years okay
00:13:10i thought i was going to say greg page does look much more fit tonight but he's still the second most
00:13:14fit guy in his corner james morton at 42 years old looks great but james has claimed to uh taking
00:13:21a lot of weight off page and also to have given him more balance you know normally when page
00:13:26punches he's on his toes he's falling away which takes away a lot of power
00:13:34page is up on his toes early here in the first round he looks pretty sharp early on here
00:13:38he's going to have a little bit befuddled right at the moment stop hitting on the break that's it
00:13:48well the movement of greg page will really do a number on david bay i don't think
00:13:52they may be able to cope with the movement the fluid movement lateral movement side to side and
00:13:57uh the consistency of his punches this fight scheduled for 12 rounds nice and easy hold easy
00:14:07this is what page can't do he can't stand directly in front of david bay which will give him momentum
00:14:13and i think what they wants uh page to do is to get against the ropes so he can uh utilize his strength
00:14:18right now
00:14:39telegraphed right hand there by
00:14:46what they needs to do is he needs to work
00:14:48the body of page slow him down and then try to make page fight his fight bay with his best punch
00:14:54of the fight a moment ago takes the right hand from page and bay was staggered by that right
00:14:58hand page follows up page looks like a hungry fighter tonight right well he wants to show the
00:15:03people that this is a new greg page left hand by bay i just don't like when page stands directly
00:15:13in front of bay because he's capable of getting hit by some of those punches
00:15:18let's get out of it nicely nice and let's go
00:15:28page's problem is that he never had progressed from his days as a great amateur
00:15:32the fact that he's finally brought jenks morton a real professional into his corner
00:15:36suggests that he was really shocked by the loss to witherspoon and that
00:15:39kind of knocked some of the cockiness out of him let's work up off the off your tail
00:15:44you walk it off the jab you walk up to the corner all right now when you're hurting push him away from
00:15:55you don't you stand there he is pressing you because you've given him room because he jumped on you no
00:16:04respect crown him just like we've been doing in the gym you understand what i'm saying busy busy busy
00:16:10after the right hand come back with the left hook throw bob weave pressure you got what i'm saying
00:16:16i don't want nothing and move that head okay how you feel good okay take a deep breath up
00:16:23bay was a little stunned by page's speed early in the round and he backed off and tried to box with
00:16:27him which is the exact wrong thing to do as his trainer indicated ray you were nodding your head
00:16:33in agreement with what was going on in david bay's corner well bay was instructed to uh pressure
00:16:38his man and he needs to the left hook temporarily stunned greg page that was a good punch by bay and
00:16:44left hook came up from around the hip and page bounces off the ropes with a two punch combination
00:16:52one thing about david bay he's a very good puncher so what great page doesn't want to do is exchange
00:17:07punch for punch he needs to continue to move side to side and if he's going to stay in the front of
00:17:12his man get him angled page looking very effective so far through the first round and a half
00:17:27another good left hand
00:17:33page is really mixing his style up a lot more than i've seen him do in the past too he seems to
00:17:38in the past at least have been content to stay with the jab get on his toes and he's throwing a lot
00:17:42more combinations he's bringing his punches from a lot more angles james wants to get more leverage
00:17:48behind the punches of uh rig page once in a while get flat-footed and not be on his toes while he's
00:17:53throwing his punches because he's taking away the power of it now see this is what bay wants to do
00:18:01inside work that body slow his man down
00:18:21a mistake there that uh page is making see he's moving in one direction he's not getting lateral
00:18:26movement so he's given bay an opportunity to cut the ring off
00:18:32good combination the right and then a left behind it and you see what's happening once again
00:18:37page is just moving to his left he should be moving both both ways
00:18:57for for a second there we had a jabbing contest and page should have come out on top because he i feel
00:19:02he has one of the best jams other than my homes in the business headweight division that was a wild
00:19:07right hand and he took a right hand from page in return did david bay
00:19:10that was a much better round for david bay
00:19:31and there is tim witherspoon in his dressing room
00:19:39about 45 minutes away from defending his title
00:19:45ujay
00:19:55hey you can't hit every time i let's put the jab down tab and then throw your right hand
00:20:01all right there's no ropes no rope no one
00:20:05one thing that is noticeable is that david bay is throwing punches with what customato used to
00:20:23call the meaner intentions he's really trying to hurt page this is the third round of what has
00:20:29been a tactical fight so far well fought fight in fact at both corners well james warden's
00:20:37instructor page he doesn't want to get the ropes because what happens bay works that body
00:20:44he wants to pay stay in the center of the ring three punch combination by david bay
00:20:49came to the right hand lead and it caught page by surprise hey you know the reason
00:20:59page is being hit because he's standing in front of his man and again i don't think
00:21:04page should be in a uh a punch for punch situation with david bay
00:21:25it's difficult to see whether or not david is hurt at all because he doesn't change expressions
00:21:34i'm really impressed with the fact that they lost so much weight and still so physically strong
00:21:46because normally to shed that that many pounds though it takes a lot from a fighter
00:22:05let's go both fighters being patient here
00:22:19page needs to snap that left jab because what's going to happen a counter right hand by david bay
00:22:26that of course is what jacks martin was saying in the corner tape said i'm doing it jack said you're not
00:22:31doing it well well page is on the float that left jab out and it's so he becomes so susceptible to a right
00:22:36hand
00:22:39you know you notice that left hand of the page again
00:22:57but he stays uh lays it out there just too long
00:23:04nice and easy nice and easy watch out
00:23:0815 seconds remaining here in the third round this one a bit kind of a quiet round for both men
00:23:16there's a left hand he tried the counter
00:23:18uh
00:23:32how you feel how you feel okay now when you're close when you're close
00:23:39swallowing when you swallow when you're close right here i want ripping at that body don't just loaf
00:23:48at his body well let's take a look at great page's best moment in that round it was a sort of short
00:23:54arm right hand didn't really hurt bay and there is jerry kochia here at ringside the wba champion
00:24:11he's looking to see if there are any prospective future challenges here
00:24:21david bay is a hungry fighter and page is going to have to beat that hunger out of him
00:24:30so page comes out on his toes once more
00:24:32page incidentally on his robe when he came into the ring it said turn the page which means of course
00:24:39it's something new time and a change in style great body punch i mean that was a big shot
00:24:48david bay land a very good right hand to the body of gray page which is exactly what bobby
00:24:52lewis had told him to do in the corner he said don't pussyfoot it just hit it
00:25:05david bay seems to have a good ability to be able to open his man up well he has a very
00:25:11unorthodox style and uh pretty good defense david bay has and he he takes advantage of his uh power
00:25:18and those big shoulders that bay has he gets inside and uh he works the body very well
00:25:26that was a good left to the head by bay and he came back with the left hand behind
00:25:29and he's got page in the corner page does not want to be there in fact in the corner david
00:25:37david bay has a great opportunity to really do a number on great page
00:25:49you know what's happening though is the fact that every so often
00:25:52page glances into his corner to see what jenks wharton has to say and it's not a break his concentration
00:26:00page having what might be or rather bay having what might be his best ground so far
00:26:04well another mistake that he's making i mean great page he's moving and then he stops and gets in
00:26:10the corner which is a bad mistake and again and could prove to be a costly one well again a couple
00:26:16of rounds ago jenks wharton said get off the ropes and he's finished great page is standing directly up
00:26:24so bay can throw those wire punches and land those body shots to the body they take their toe in the
00:26:29later round very punishing and bay has had four or five good body shots in this round he's going
00:26:34to the body there's another one bay is going to the body and watch for a shot by bay to the heat
00:26:42in fact you can really see bay's confidence grow in this round
00:26:57so david bay punches are you know looping punches but they are so effective
00:27:09this shouldn't happen though i mean bay has beaten patient to punch with the left j
00:27:16we're talking about uh discouragement it happens then that was a good right-handed
00:27:20back page into a corner once more excellent round larry for david bay and he seems to be doing
00:27:28the boxing equivalent of taking what's given to him well he's forcing the issue and the guy who
00:27:34forces the issue puts the other guy on the defensive so that he's a little confused now
00:27:40page is trying to make some changes in mid-career and he's really trying hard but it's not working and
00:27:47so all that can lead to is to some confusion you got me to bridge the house you understand what i'm
00:27:56saying i need the jab working all the time pop pop and don't hesitate but don't straighten up now when
00:28:03he you catch his left hook over here you know how we set up and you catch the left hook turn your left
00:28:07foot pop pop pop right there pinkland thomas watching the fight even as you and i and us
00:28:18seems to have his mind a little bit elsewhere right seems very content to me
00:28:25so bobby lewis telling david bay to keep it up with the jab be more consistent with the jabs
00:28:30and perhaps flick it out a little bit more he was successful in the last round listening to bobby
00:28:34lewis and going to the body well bobby instructed david bay to count that left hook of greg page by
00:28:40blocking with his right and counting with his left hook his own left hook
00:28:44he had an opportunity right there all those punches of greg page were caught in the gloves of david bay
00:28:48page mocking bay that time but those punches are scoring and a good shot to the body and a left hand to the head
00:29:04page is making a big mistake again but he's standing straight up watch for the left hook to catch it
00:29:10another good shot to the body by david day and every time he gets greg page on the road he digs first to
00:29:15the body it appeared to me that greg was stunned by one of those punches and uh now his hands is
00:29:21dropped it's bad mistake he's in the corner two bad mistakes that's exactly the way he fought and
00:29:28lost to tim witherspoon with his back to the ropes now let's get out let's get out nice and easy
00:29:36nice and easy let's go again now you'll notice great we'll stop in the corner
00:29:46and david bay working with the body let's get out nice and easy
00:29:51nice and easy david bay losing his mouthpiece there so he'll have to guts it out for the last half of
00:29:57this round without it
00:30:06nice and easy nice and easy no breaks okay
00:30:12great page's mouth is wide open and that's somewhat of an indication that fatigue has set in
00:30:28yeah i think you were right i think when he was mocking greg page i'm not sure at all
00:30:31but that he wasn't stunned by it i'm not sure he's still not feeling the effects of it
00:30:35that was a quick right hand by page by page there page had some very bad amateur habits
00:30:44and he stands in front of his man he drops his hand he turns away he walks away those are a few
00:30:49changes that must be made
00:30:51for a boxer to be effective and while he's moving he needs to be doing something he needs
00:31:06to be throwing punches because all that movement will not win a fight
00:31:15once again page lunging with that jab and it's being caught in the gloves of david bay
00:31:21that was a better round for greg page david bay sort of let him off the hook a little bit there
00:31:33i thought right now listen they had him on the run earlier what you're doing you're letting this guy
00:31:41take the play you're letting this guy take the play by not getting inside and being busy you're
00:31:47standing outside giving this guy too much respect damn the respect to this guy you understand what
00:31:52i'm saying when you're there get your hands off you're walking straight to him without your left
00:31:58hand working and we want to remind you inside the nfl coming up with host len dawson and nick bonacani
00:32:04debuting thursdays september the 6th len dawson and nick bonacani be with you all through the football
00:32:09season giving you all the ins and outs of what's coming up and what has been in the nfl that week
00:32:14and the week ahead good show one of the most popular on hbo as a matter of fact
00:32:19two guys of course who know from once they speak this is the sixth round for a guy who weighs over
00:32:24230 pounds greg page has surprising little power and he has to take advantage of his movement
00:32:32and the question is if he's just too heavy to move for 12 rounds against a pressing opponent
00:32:37now the reason page does does not get the true effect of his punches is because he stays on his
00:32:42toes always and uh a couple left uh right up the cuts that's thrown by greg page but he stays on his
00:32:48toes and takes the leverage off his punches well once again bobby lewis talking to david bay in the
00:32:53corner between rounds and he was saying damn the respect don't have any respect for this guy stay
00:32:57right inside on him and i can't help but wonder if that doesn't harken back to some of page's other
00:33:01fights i remember tim witherspoon saying he could walk right through greg pages punches and i've heard that on
00:33:06numerous occasions before that of course goes along with what larry merchant was just saying
00:33:10well i tell you greg page could punch harder and a lot of times he he throws punches while moving away
00:33:16so it's not that effective although he scores because i mean greg page is one of the fastest
00:33:21heavyweights in the division he doesn't want to be there though he's once again he's fighting david's
00:33:30base fight against the ropes and inside joy curtis yelling at the fighters you can hear you can fight
00:33:37you can still get a hand free you can punch bay again obeying his corner that's what they told him
00:33:42to do is stay inside i think they'd probably like him to punch a little more when he is in there
00:33:52what david is really trying to do is just trying to out muscle greg page and page is giving him that
00:33:58opportunity by remaining in the corners let's go let's go and you heard that story joy curtis telling
00:34:18greg page no more rough stuff yeah but that was that was a smart thing to do for place to get out
00:34:22get out of that corner it's difficult to penetrate the defense of david bay those big shoulders and uh
00:34:34his long arms and he keeps that chin tucked down which is smart
00:34:39he knows how effective the left jable page is but once he uses it it stops david bay in his track
00:34:53so everyone that's my best combination brother the right uppercut left hook the right uppercut raises
00:35:11the opponent's chin and the left hook accommodates
00:35:30there's tim witherspoon closer to his moment in the cleats here
00:35:41and there's larry holmes the man against whom tim witherspoon really made his reputation losing a
00:35:53controversial split decision
00:35:59square and then run your shits off you understand what i'm saying yes sir that's what i want right
00:36:05and you're laying there getting hit with bullshit shots up on the inside that you ain't never supposed to
00:36:09get hit with get the hands off captain let's go to work remember this is this this is your first
00:36:16title for you the world title is for your mind overhand right david bay is in the army for six
00:36:23years you heard him say to his trainer yes sir we'll see if he can follow orders here i think
00:36:28he will because he's been motivated by bobby lewis and he has followed orders the entire fight page backs
00:36:34he backs him up
00:36:48he's just kind of marching at david bay now
00:36:56and again most of those being caught on the gloves it seems to me there's blood under the
00:37:01left eye now of david bay it is underneath the eye so it does not appear that it will
00:37:07be of any great concern at least at the moment
00:37:10bay seems to appear to be a little tired of me barry now uh page is starting to whoop the body
00:37:16and that cut now getting a little bit nastier and it could have an effect in that the eye could close
00:37:22because there's a lot of swelling underneath the eye
00:37:28so we'll see if this doesn't change some of the strategy
00:37:31you notice now that uh david bay is not really uh being aggressive he's retreating now and he's
00:37:46leaning on his man also
00:37:52and that's what i was talking about uh it's not a physical obstacle it's a psychological uh
00:37:58could it be that he's trying to reserve himself for the last two rounds
00:38:04page also getting some good shots in on the eye the cut is underneath the eye but there is a lot
00:38:08of swelling there so it okay could as the fight goes along start to have an effect
00:38:15combination by three punch combination in fact by page david bay is getting hit by a couple of
00:38:21punches now enough the left hook right hand is starting to get through page being much more active in
00:38:26this round now picking up the tempo he knows he's got his man in at least a little bit of trouble
00:38:30because the cut let's go they could probably go down because he's starting to wear down now
00:38:36and that eye is getting nastier as the moments go by here
00:38:40it is not so much the cut it's the swelling
00:38:42going to be a busy time in david bay's corner between rounds here they will have to stop the cut
00:38:59and get the swelling down as best they can
00:39:05and we will be going into david bay's corner to see just what they can do it is a pretty nasty welt
00:39:10and cut on the upper part of the cheek actually under the eye bottom part of the eye bone i guess
00:39:16you'd call it
00:39:23that was page's best round i thought and the question now is how the cut affects david bay
00:39:29and whether there's some fatigue to mingle with the blood as well it seemed to me that
00:39:35page was inspired by the sight of his opponent's blood
00:39:52breath when he gets against them rolls and drop them don't drop them hands what you're doing he
00:39:58gets when he get on them ropes you get your hands off jump in with that left hook that we was talking
00:40:03about the leaping left hook take the right hand to the body again come up with the hook and it's
00:40:08sitting right there in front of you there's a left hook by page a right that wasn't clean
00:40:17but was indicative of the fact that page did have much the best of it in that round
00:40:22and the swelling of course still there
00:40:24uh well there's a swell on the forehead of the day and that's a result of uh two hairs colliding
00:40:34and i'm sure it is getting to the point now that i would have to think ray vision could start to be
00:40:39affected by the swelling a little bit of blood from the nose of great page also
00:40:43um what could possibly happen is the fact that david break could become handicapped if pay should work
00:40:50do more damage to the eye
00:40:54normally normally when a fighter uh that has never been cut before and he's cut for the very first
00:40:59time in his career sometimes he you know really disturbs him there's also a little bit of blood i
00:41:04believe on the bridge of the nose of david bay although that could just be from the eye from the gloves of
00:41:08greg page we'll try to keep an eye on that blood once more coming from the cut which is on the
00:41:13cheek but again it's the swelling that could be the most damaging
00:41:20the bird the good thing about is good for david bay is the fact that the cut is under
00:41:24the eye instead of above because if that was the case the eye would close immediately
00:41:30they stuck page with a good left hand but it was all by its lonesome
00:41:33what page should do and i see though there's a good opening lead off rights because he's in the
00:41:39position david bay uh left hand is down i would take advantage of it bay is also breathing through
00:41:46his mouth a little bit and i think there is a case of fatigue in addition to the damaging cut
00:41:53greg page is fighting right now like a guy who feels as though he's in control of things
00:41:57uh great pages rely on his left hook to get him inside that was the lead off right but he's relying
00:42:11upon that left hook to get him inside uh jackson morton constantly told page use a left jab to the
00:42:17body to the head and work that right hand in a lot of fighters have a tendency to try to load it with one
00:42:24big punch it doesn't happen that easy the left jab leads up to those punches still a ways to go
00:42:29in this fight this is the eighth round scheduled for 12. watch some of the little uppercuts inside
00:42:39thrown by greg page come on let's go not big punches but it has a tendency to make the swelling worse
00:42:46swelling is all below the eye right now
00:42:58bleeding is not appreciably worse than it was in the last round but the swelling is a little bit so
00:43:02and page again coming upstairs with that uppercut
00:43:22greg page is beginning to turn the tide in his favor after eight rounds
00:43:26in the schedule 12 rounder i have him slightly ahead four rounds to three and one even
00:43:34when you're there i don't need you sitting
00:43:38i don't know what i say thank you bad
00:43:42just let one look at it
00:43:44what's that what's that what's underneath
00:43:46it's underneath
00:43:50they're not bothering
00:43:54they're not bothering you
00:43:56you sure that he's here
00:43:58show me you're in control of this fight
00:44:02the body shot you're taking out the body shots
00:44:05you're getting out tell me here okay give me a good shot
00:44:10here jenks morton saying to greg page that body shots
00:44:16will end this or at least lead to the end
00:44:19he feels also that bay is tired and that there's a soft underbelly to attack there
00:44:24you know i've heard it a number of times from jenks ready to body shot the body shots and for real
00:44:29they they take their toe over and fight it
00:44:39break i want you to break clean understand let's go
00:44:42jerry curtis taking charge in the ring i'm gonna tell you to break i want you to break clean he said
00:44:48both been scored that time page backed up he might have gotten the worst of it he says no i'm not hurt
00:44:53he said that before and he was you know why page is being hit burris again he's standing straight up
00:45:00he's making a big mistake by just standing in front of david bay
00:45:04bay digging the uppercut he's not using uh page is not using that jab and at this point now because
00:45:10there's another cut on the right the right eyebrow that one can actually be more damaging than the
00:45:15first one so david bay obviously thinks he's got to get after him right now that one is in the brow
00:45:19above the right eye and that one in the long run could cause more problems because blood couldn't get in
00:45:23his eye and when there's sounds of desperation the fighter he becomes so dangerous and the key for
00:45:29page is to use our left jab stay outside and he's starting to move a lot better now not fight inside
00:45:36he doesn't have to this is wrong he's always had a habit greg page has a taunting his opponent playing
00:45:46games with his opponent
00:45:47i don't like when page is standing firm this man he needs the box keep boxing work that jail
00:45:59cut alongside the right eye and again we'll try to keep an eye on that too
00:46:03see if it is alongside the eye or above the eye always more damaging if it's above
00:46:07a lot of work needs to be done for to uh stop the green
00:46:18of david bay
00:46:21and page has stopped fighting for a moment here
00:46:31took a left hand backs up off the ropes once more he's going to say he's not hurt but those punches
00:46:36have a cumulative effect
00:46:42david bay's gonna land those bombs to the body and i know he wish he could land one to the head
00:46:50it appears that the cut over the right eye is alongside the eye there doesn't seem to be any
00:46:54blood going into the eye itself
00:47:02and the swelling on the left eye doesn't seem to be any worse than it was two rounds
00:47:05ago he took another left-handed page from david bay who's actually having a pretty good round here
00:47:09okay
00:47:16okay and do it again
00:47:21page couldn't stand prosperity began to get careless and play around with that pity pad amateur stuff
00:47:28and blew the round
00:47:35working feverishly on bay now he has two cuts now let's take a look and show where bay took charge
00:47:41early in this round
00:47:44there were two lefts one of them real good and a right that landed on the chin as well although it
00:47:49wasn't a stunning punch
00:47:54rick page likes to pose a bit too much when he thinks things
00:47:58are going his way and david bay was punching while he was posing
00:48:03so we come to the tenth round and that cut on david bay's right eye is a little bit above the eye but
00:48:28it's far enough outside the eye itself i believe to where it won't really affect his eyesight
00:48:41and again in the corner uh greg page they were telling him come on do what you're supposed to do
00:48:45and let's go home
00:49:00you notice that um greg page has the speed to to punch get in and punch and move out but what he's
00:49:06doing he's starting to pitipack and uh he's not getting any respect from david bay
00:49:10and all he's been throwing so far now is just arm punches and they're not effective though yeah
00:49:15no snap right now on the punches nice and easy nice and easy again you saw greg page look over
00:49:22to his corner to jenks morton and it is while it's good to respect what your corner wants you to
00:49:28do and the coaching that you might be getting from the corner it does break your concentration now
00:49:33what we have now is more power uh from david bathing ray page again page is basically
00:49:40throwing all punches and he can't keep his man off of that blood
00:49:48it's a pretty good shot by page incidentally the corner of david bay has done a masterful job in
00:49:53stopping the bleeding of both cuts there's a little bit of blood alongside the left eye
00:49:58the right eye of david bay has not opened up again in this round
00:50:04chopping right hand by david bay
00:50:10okay
00:50:24Pages doing a lot of moving, but he's not working.
00:50:41I mean, he should be throwing some punches.
00:50:43He should be working the left jab a little more.
00:50:45In fact, both the guys are cut, so any punch would do more damage.
00:50:51He seems to have had his opportunities to do damage to David Bay,
00:50:55and he just hasn't seemed to take advantage of them.
00:50:57Also, a little blood inside the mouth of Greg Page.
00:51:00He's burning more energy by just moving and not doing anything.
00:51:10The question, of course, is, is there any sting left in the punches of David Bay?
00:51:13Punch out of there.
00:51:16And an overhead right there that landed,
00:51:19but again, it didn't land with much harm.
00:51:21David Bay has re-seized the initiative here.
00:51:25Greg Page, I don't know if he's tired from the body punches,
00:51:28but he's going to have to dig down and fish inside deep, deep,
00:51:34to find something to get this fight back.
00:51:37You're getting too close.
00:51:38There you see the little cut on the right eye of David Bay.
00:51:44Overhand right, then go to his body with the left hook.
00:51:46The lead on with that right hand.
00:51:47If you hit him, he'll go, I'm telling you.
00:51:49Okay.
00:51:49You're getting too close.
00:51:50You're smothering your tightness.
00:51:50That's why you can't get rid of no power.
00:51:53Take this rest.
00:51:55He's on water.
00:51:59There you could see what the face looked like as the round closed.
00:52:03A lot of blood splattered around,
00:52:04but he doesn't seem to be in any real trouble
00:52:07as far as this fight is concerned.
00:52:12It's a question of whether mean intentions can beat mean feet.
00:52:17Is it your feeling, Larry,
00:52:18that this will come down in the last two rounds?
00:52:20I think Page has to win these two rounds to win the fight.
00:52:25I think it's a close fight,
00:52:27and I think you will see somewhat of a resurgence
00:52:30of strength in both fighters,
00:52:31because these last two rounds,
00:52:33like Bobby Lewis stated to Dave Bay,
00:52:36we want these two rounds,
00:52:37and they both need it.
00:52:39Let's go.
00:52:40Joey Curtis and Greg Page exchanging words.
00:52:42I always said at the top of this program
00:52:53that it was the kind of night
00:52:54that you really didn't know who was going to win,
00:52:56and here we are into the 11th round of this fight,
00:53:00and we still don't know.
00:53:01Well, I'll tell you one thing about this whole card
00:53:03is the fact that each fighter has the ability
00:53:06to defeat the other, rather,
00:53:09and you never know what's going to happen.
00:53:11I think they're very easily matched.
00:53:17Ed Page is one of those guys
00:53:19that looks for all the world
00:53:20like he should be the champion of the world
00:53:22and just never seems to put all the pieces together.
00:53:25But he can, but I mean,
00:53:27he has the tools to become champion,
00:53:29but it takes a little more drive,
00:53:32a little more discipline
00:53:33to make everything happen.
00:53:36Takes a good attitude also.
00:53:41David Bay's corner.
00:53:43Bobby Lewis telling David Bay
00:53:45to take a step back from this man,
00:53:46not crowd him quite as much as he was
00:53:48to generate a little more power.
00:53:54Page continues to fight with his back to the ropes.
00:53:56It's cost him dearly in previous fights.
00:53:58I don't know why David Bay backed off of Greg Page.
00:54:06He should have stayed there
00:54:07and continue to work,
00:54:09whether it was the body,
00:54:10whether or not it was their arms.
00:54:11That was a good right hand by Bay
00:54:21and it backed Greg Page up.
00:54:22And another good right hand by Bay,
00:54:31or left hand rather by Bay.
00:54:32You know, both fighters start to rock each other
00:54:34with left hooks and right hands.
00:54:36But what they have to do
00:54:38once they hurt each other,
00:54:40they have to follow up
00:54:41with more combinations
00:54:42or more punches.
00:54:43That's the way I want to see it.
00:54:44That's three on the back.
00:54:46Stop.
00:54:47That's it.
00:54:49Let's go.
00:54:50Greg Page finally pushes David Bay away.
00:54:52They had the better of that exchange inside.
00:54:55Page, you know,
00:54:56Page pushed David Bay off,
00:54:58but he should have been doing it
00:54:59throughout the fight.
00:55:00Let's be right back.
00:55:02Let's be right back.
00:55:03Let's be right back.
00:55:04Come on.
00:55:09Obviously, point hands on left.
00:55:16Again, trying to back away
00:55:18to get more power.
00:55:24Now that right hand on the chin
00:55:26is why I don't want to move the right hand.
00:55:29You got that out of that thing.
00:55:31The first time you're doing it
00:55:32is on the chin.
00:55:34This is the last round.
00:55:36Definitely.
00:55:37We're too hard for this, baby.
00:55:39Too many miles of work.
00:55:40We're going to have to go a mile and I'll rest after that.
00:55:42We're going to have to go for the last round, you understand?
00:55:44We're going to push him there.
00:55:45Push him back.
00:55:46Shit, baby.
00:55:47We're too hard for this.
00:55:50Get close.
00:55:51Throw it.
00:55:52You're holding it back.
00:55:53Throw it.
00:55:53Make the tunnels on the road.
00:55:55Throw it.
00:55:55Wherever he go, you want that right hand thrown at his head.
00:55:58Throw it.
00:55:59The first time.
00:56:00The first time.
00:56:01This is fine.
00:56:02This is fine.
00:56:02This is fine.
00:56:03This is fine.
00:56:04This is fine.
00:56:04The last round.
00:56:05We've got no more to go, okay?
00:56:06Fire, fire, fire, fire.
00:56:08As you did trying to do.
00:56:12My impression as we go into the last round is that Greg Page hasn't done himself any good
00:56:17in this fight.
00:56:18His reputation.
00:56:20Regardless of whether he wins or not.
00:56:22But that David Bay, if he can close impressively and win, will have done himself a whole lot of
00:56:27good.
00:56:27That might have been the best combination of the fight right there by David Bay to start the
00:56:30final round.
00:56:31Well, Bobby Lewis and Bay's coins instructed him to throw a right hand, and he just lands.
00:56:37And another good right hand by David Bay.
00:56:39Bay right on top of him.
00:56:41That left eye now of David Bay is almost closed, but he figures he's got about two and a half minutes
00:56:54to go, and that's it.
00:57:02David Bay has never gone beyond the 10-round distance.
00:57:05His was the question mark so far as conditioning is concerned.
00:57:08Not Greg Page.
00:57:09But right now, Bay seems as though he may be the stronger of the two.
00:57:13Well, Bay is in excellent shape.
00:57:15And you know, brother, he blocked out the feeling of going another additional two rounds.
00:57:20And he looks great.
00:57:22Evidently, he's trained very hard for this fight.
00:57:24He wants to win.
00:57:26And again, Greg Page just standing there.
00:57:28And once more, just to echo what Larry Merchant had said, not looking any part the champion.
00:57:33I think Page had the world on the shoulder.
00:57:35So much pressure.
00:57:36He wanted to look good for the people.
00:57:40And Tomo's a big change in Greg Page, along with David Bay.
00:57:45He has created a lot of problems for him.
00:57:46Well, there was a definite note of concern in Greg Page's corner.
00:57:49He sticks his tongue out at David Bay.
00:57:51But this is all showbiz here.
00:57:54This is the land of show business.
00:57:56But right now, David Bay is the guy with a white collar and a three-piece suit.
00:58:04This is what champions are made of, David Bay.
00:58:07I mean, he's pushing himself.
00:58:09And both eyes has been cut.
00:58:12And he's still just as determined.
00:58:13He's bleeding from the nose as well.
00:58:15He's got a lot of heart for David Bay.
00:58:19Greg Page is in a fight.
00:58:22He's carrying a fight.
00:58:23Body shots.
00:58:24He's been doing a number.
00:58:25And a good job on Greg Page.
00:58:30And again, a combination in close quarters.
00:58:34What the judges are looking at, Paris.
00:58:37Page, I mean, Greg, David Bay has not stopped fighting.
00:58:42Not even when he was cut.
00:58:43He appeared to just hit a leveling point for a while.
00:58:46But since that point, since he was cut over the right eye, actually, he's just come roaring back.
00:58:51And here he is finishing with a roar.
00:58:53Coming down toward 20 seconds remaining in this fight.
00:58:56David Bay would have won a lot of friends tonight.
00:58:58Win or lose.
00:58:59I'll take my head off to David Bay.
00:59:11Been a great performance for him.
00:59:14Only 13 fights, remember.
00:59:15He's never gone 12 rounds.
00:59:17And that's it.
00:59:19And this one is in the hands of the judges.
00:59:21Crowd, very appreciative.
00:59:31This is a knowledgeable crowd here in Las Vegas, as you would expect.
00:59:37David Bay, I would have to think, really fared very well.
00:59:40And again, that's not to make the decision for the judges.
00:59:42But win or lose, he's the guy who's going to come out of it really the favorite son, I would think.
00:59:46Well, I was very impressed with the fact that David Bay was able to block out the thought of going additional rounds.
00:59:52And he put on a great show.
00:59:56David Bay was a guy with only 13 fights, 11 knockouts.
00:59:59So you know he hasn't gone too far.
01:00:01Let's take a look at some action in that final round.
01:00:03And Bay is just going for it.
01:00:05Well, David Bay made the fight.
01:00:06He kept the pressure on, lands some very heavy punches to the body.
01:00:10And the mistake that Great Page was making, he was trying to load it with one punch, the left hook.
01:00:15And he was pretty much fighting David Bay's fight, inside and against the ropes, which was a bad mistake.
01:00:20Well, now, they say that when you're the underdog, as David Bay was, you've got to take the fight to your opponent.
01:00:24Now, if that's what judges are looking for, I don't think there's any question as to how this decision could go.
01:00:29Well, David Bay definitely made the fight.
01:00:30A couple times, Great Page landed a few combinations.
01:00:35But there's still more.
01:00:37And let's now get up for the official decision.
01:00:47We'll go to Chuck Hall for the official announcement.
01:00:52Ladies and gentlemen, we have a unanimous decision.
01:00:56Judge Dave Moretti scores 115-113.
01:01:04Judge Lou Tabat scores 116-112.
01:01:12And Judge Chuck Baker scores 115-114.
01:01:18And the excitement, of course, that you would expect.
01:01:31And this is the decision I don't think you'll find too many people who would disagree with, right?
01:01:35Well, quite naturally, Greg Page is devastated because he wanted to show the people a new Greg Page.
01:01:42And, I mean, people have to understand there's a lot of questions on Page from his loss some time ago.
01:01:49And he's trying to regroup.
01:01:52Well, at the beginning of the fight, especially, he did seem to be doing all the right things.
01:01:56And yet, for some reason, Greg Page, as I mentioned during the fight, he looks for all the world like he should be the champion of the world.
01:02:03And yet, there just seems to be some element missing.
01:02:06I don't know whether it's heart.
01:02:07I don't know whether it's style.
01:02:08I don't know whether it's punch.
01:02:09I don't really know exactly what it is.
01:02:11But you know that there is something missing from the man.
01:02:14And I just can't put my finger on it.
01:02:15Can you?
01:02:16I'm sure that now, once Greg Page goes back and watches the tapes, he's going to realize that he needs to have more work and be more aggressive.
01:02:23All right.
01:02:24We'll come back to this discussion right now.
01:02:25Larry Merchant is with the winner, David Bay, and certainly a very happy winner.
01:02:28Larry, you got it.
01:02:30Whoa, it was rough.
01:02:31Here's the man.
01:02:32Here's the man.
01:02:33Here's the man.
01:02:33All right, David Bay, you have two nasty-looking eyes.
01:02:37You've got cuts here, here, under both eyes, on top of both eyes.
01:02:40That's part of business.
01:02:42That's part of business.
01:02:43How much did it bother you during the fight?
01:02:45Oh, Page is slick.
01:02:46You're real slick, you know, y'all.
01:02:47But it really didn't bother me because you don't feel them when you're in the ring.
01:02:50They become numb.
01:02:50You get hit so much when you become numb.
01:02:52What won the fight for you?
01:02:53I guess my aggressive never not hit the most effective shots.
01:02:57It seemed, we talked earlier about discipline, determination.
01:03:00You took off a lot of weight.
01:03:02It showed in this fight.
01:03:02How did you take off 50, 60 pounds?
01:03:05I'm determination running and training every day.
01:03:07That's the way I did it.
01:03:08You know, I get up and run six miles every morning with a plastic suit on and drink a lot of water and eat that much.
01:03:12It showed in the ring tonight.
01:03:14Congratulations, baby.
01:03:15Thank you very much.
01:03:15I'd like to say hi to my friends back in Icetown, Philadelphia.
01:03:18It's my little baby, Laird.
01:03:20Barry.
01:03:23Thank you very much, Larry Merchant.
01:03:25Very impressive victory for him, I would think it's safe to say, right?
01:03:28I think it was.
01:03:28In fact, he displays so much determination in the heart and desire to win, Burr.
01:03:32I mean, you have to take your head off to the guy.
01:03:34It was an outstanding victory for him, and he really dug down deep.
01:03:36You know, they talk about heart in sports.
01:03:38They talk about it in every sport.
01:03:40I don't think it's anywhere more indicative than it was in the ring tonight with David Bay.
01:03:43With Bay, I mean, he was handicapped.
01:03:44Both eyes were cut severely, and he just kept pushing it, kept going for it, and he got it.
01:03:49All right.
01:03:49A little bit earlier tonight, Michael Doakes was in the ring.
01:03:52It had been a tough time for Michael Doakes the last time he stepped between the ropes.
01:03:56That was in Cleveland when he fought Jerry Coetzee.
01:03:58Tonight, he fought a fellow by the name of Mike Jamison.
01:04:01And to be perfectly honest with you, it was not much of a performance for Michael Doakes.
01:04:06Jamison came in here with a 10-6 record, and that is nothing, certainly, to be very proud of.
01:04:11And we're in the final 30 seconds right now as we watch the Michael Doakes fight.
01:04:24Sorry, I thought we were going to fill it.
01:04:29A little blood from the nose of Jamison off out of that last punch.
01:04:33It was unmarked tail end.
01:04:34Left hand flicked into the face.
01:04:36This one will go the distance.
01:04:41And so the Greg Page-David Bay fight is now history.
01:04:50David Bay has won it, and now the spotlight swings to the main go.
01:04:54Doakes, of course, went on to win that decision.
01:04:56But I'll tell you, they always say a win is a win.
01:04:58I think in this case, a win was not necessarily a win.
01:05:01It was not really an impressive performance for him at all.
01:05:03Well, it was a tough going in.
01:05:04It had so much against him.
01:05:05And, you know, he just didn't have it.
01:05:07That was a thing.
01:05:09He looked to be tired at the end of the first or second round.
01:05:12So Michael Doakes is a winner, but a questionable winner.
01:05:14David Bay, a very impressive winner, I think.
