00:00:00In the past 16 months, we've traveled back and forth to the Neon of Las Vegas, the bright
00:00:17light to the world's most vibrant city in New York, and we've even hopped the Atlantic
00:00:21and ventured to London, England.
00:00:24It's been an eight-fight journey into the madcap world of professional boxing.
00:00:30The BetBad series on HBO.
00:00:34We've seen the drama and disappointment of fallen champions.
00:00:38The former IBF and WBC heavyweight champion, Larry Lee, the Eastern Assassin, Cole, Tim Witherstuhl.
00:00:54Uppercut was a good shot by Stinks.
00:00:57Stinks just let it all go.
00:00:58And Thomas is in trouble.
00:01:01He is in serious trouble.
00:01:03Wormick right on top of him.
00:01:06Witherstuhl's still in trouble.
00:01:08Down he goes again.
00:01:09And now it's over.
00:01:10Rivera stops the fight.
00:01:12The fight is over.
00:01:14The varied controversial issues which have plagued this quest for one champion.
00:01:17And I can say to the judges, the referees, the promoters, to kiss where the sun don't shine.
00:01:25And since we're on HBO, that's my big black behind.
00:01:29Angry and bitter fighters making accusations of promoters and, at times, even pulling out.
00:01:35Others taking a different road to greener pastures as lawsuits are flying and championship belts are stripped.
00:01:42The disappointment and disgrace of challengers turned club fighters.
00:01:46We also witness the emergence of a rising star.
00:01:57Tonight, we'll focus on Mike Tyson's trainer, Kevin Rooney, whose influence on the young champion is traced back to his own days as a fighter.
00:02:07Now, Tyson takes the final step toward the undisputed title.
00:02:11And now Tyson moves in for the kill.
00:02:13Two of the cuts in the left hand.
00:02:15Thomas trying to hold on.
00:02:16Serious trouble.
00:02:17And down he goes.
00:02:18And finally, we've seen the opportunists.
00:02:26Tony Tucker, after a come from behind TKO, Buster Douglas, has emerged as the IBS heavyweight champion.
00:02:33There was enough hook there.
00:02:35And a right behind him.
00:02:36And another right.
00:02:37Buster is in deep trouble on the ropes.
00:02:39Almost halfway through the round.
00:02:41And Mills Lane, I believe, has stopped this one.
00:02:44He has.
00:02:44It's over.
00:02:45Tonight, we take an in-depth look at his controversial business relationship with his father, Bob Tucker.
00:02:52As we present the final chapter of HBO Sports Heavyweight Unification Series.
00:03:03Tonight in Las Vegas, Tyson and Tucker meet for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world.
00:03:15Live from the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, Nevada, HBO Sports presents the final fight of our heavyweight unification series.
00:03:42As WBC and WBA champion, Mike Tyson, beats IBF champion, Tony Tucker.
00:03:48It's scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:03:51On March 22nd of 1986, Pinkland Thomas lost his WBC title to Trevor Burbick in this very arena.
00:03:59The first fight in a heavyweight unification series, which finally reaches a conclusion tonight.
00:04:04Champions have come and gone.
00:04:06Michael Spink still claims a piece of the crown as the choice of at least some.
00:04:09But tonight, one man will climb out of this 20-foot square with the undisputed title for the first time since February 15th, 1978.
00:04:19Ironically, it was in this very ring and in this very arena that the enigmatic Leon Spinks took the undisputed title from the legendary Muhammad Ali.
00:04:28Hello, everybody. I'm Barry Tompkins, along with Sugar Ray Leonard and Larry Merchant.
00:04:33Welcome to Las Vegas.
00:04:34Yes, there will be a championship fight tonight, contrary to some discussions yesterday.
00:04:38Discussions about the fact that there were an awful lot of hands in Tony Tucker's pocket, none of which were Tony's.
00:04:44And also, I think a lot of people would have liked to have seen Michael Spinks in this championship fight and not Tony Tucker.
00:04:50But, Larry Merchant, the simple fact is Michael Spinks is up in the ozone here and Tony Tucker is here tonight in the ring.
00:04:58I don't think there's any question or that there's any secret that we'd have preferred to have Michael Spinks fighting Tyson in the final showdown.
00:05:04But given the politics and the egos and the conflicts of interest in boxing and the fact that some fighters try to circumvent the tournament and others try to sabotage the tournament,
00:05:14it's simply amazing that we would have any final at all.
00:05:18And it's even odd, in a way, that Michael Spinks, of all people, really validated Tucker as an opponent for tonight
00:05:25because Spinks not only refused to fight Tyson in the tournament, but he also gave up his share of the heavyweight championship
00:05:32so that he didn't have to defend against Tucker, who was a mandatory challenger.
00:05:38Who is this unknown terror?
00:05:40Well, he's unbeaten against ordinary opposition.
00:05:42He's never been knocked down against the same opposition.
00:05:46And he is a big, tall, defensive-oriented fighter, the kind of fighter that has frustrated Tyson in the past.
00:05:53And one other thing, Barry, he has a 14-inch advantage in his hair length.
00:05:58Sure, let's talk for just a moment about Mike Tyson.
00:06:01He's a guy, and everyone has said this, including yourself, the only person who's going to beat Mike Tyson is Mike Tyson.
00:06:06And yet a couple of things that went a little bit astray for the champion in the past couple of weeks.
00:06:10He missed three or four days of training.
00:06:12That's never happened before.
00:06:14And when he weighed in yesterday, he was three or four pounds heavier than he has been, at least in recent fights.
00:06:19Is it just a mountain out of a molehill?
00:06:20Is there anything to it at all?
00:06:22Well, I think for Mike Tyson, what appears to be uncut to risk is really normal.
00:06:26Because when I was training for Hagler, I trained for so long, Barry, I had to break training.
00:06:30I had to break monotony.
00:06:31I think the same thing applies to Mike Tyson.
00:06:33He wanted to get away from that training atmosphere and go to a more peaceful-like atmosphere.
00:06:39It's okay.
00:06:39I don't see no big problem with that.
00:06:41All right, and of course, when something like that does happen, when a Mike Tyson does go away, well, then I guess all the fingers start pointing.
00:06:46And in this case, the most logical place for them to point is into his own corner.
00:06:50And the second man in his corner, his trainer, Kevin Rooney.
00:06:54Now, of course, if Kevin Rooney is going to be held accountable at all for some of the lapses in Mike Tyson's training,
00:06:59then I guess it's fair to say that he can also be held accountable for Mike Tyson's record.
00:07:07Everybody try to relax and do the right thing now.
00:07:10Try to move your heads.
00:07:11Like, do the best you ever did, you know what I'm saying?
00:07:14You guys understand what I'm saying?
00:07:16Don't make me go off, you understand?
00:07:18That's work.
00:07:20That's work.
00:07:21That's work.
00:07:23At 31, Kevin Rooney has a stable of two toddlers and one 21-year-old heavyweight champion,
00:07:29all of which happened happily in the long run, but unhappily at that moment,
00:07:35after Alexis Arguello ended his own championship ambitions.
00:07:39Rooney learned that giving advice can be more rewarding than receiving punches.
00:07:44Rooney's journey to his enviable position began as a teenager in upstate New York
00:07:50where he sat at the feet of Zen boxing master, Kuss D'Amato.
00:07:55It was like a powwow, and then the more I got to know him, the more he spoke to me.
00:08:01Like, when I first came up, we used to take long rides to the city,
00:08:04and you would talk over and over the stories and, you know, life in general.
00:08:09You know, I feel that everything that I know and that I teach is what I learned from Kuss.
00:08:14Rooney was D'Amato's keenest disciple when Tyson arrived at age 14 from a correctional institution.
00:08:22Gradually, a bond developed between the amateur and the pro,
00:08:26and D'Amato groomed Rooney to carry on his legacy through the future champion,
00:08:31even though he had never trained anyone before.
00:08:34The torch was passed when D'Amato died a year and a half ago.
00:08:38We just both grew up around Kuss. We're like brothers.
00:08:45It's not business to me, which would mean him.
00:08:48I guess we're more friends than just, you know, boxer, trainer.
00:08:52But when it comes to business, when the job has to be done, you know, we both do our job.
00:08:55He's only looking for one shot on me.
00:08:57You've got to be satisfied. You've got to be even more aware now, you know what I'm saying?
00:09:00You can't get lazy. You can't get careless.
00:09:03Michael, you have a great jab. You're not using it at all.
00:09:05I want you a snappy-hard jab. You're not fighting with that.
00:09:07But given the high expectations of the precocious Tyson,
00:09:15whenever he looks less than his best, whether it's his fault or not,
00:09:20rumors surfaced. Rumors that a veteran, perhaps like Eddie Futch, will join or replace Rooney.
00:09:27I'm able to handle it. I know what I'm doing.
00:09:30See, I've said this before. I've said it to newspaper men.
00:09:33I, you know, I know how to read and I see, you know, this guy, bring this guy in.
00:09:38Rooney's not doing it, this and that.
00:09:40I just take that stuff with a grain of salt.
00:09:42See, I've always said, I don't, I'm not, I don't consider that I'm better than anybody.
00:09:47But I don't consider anyone that's better than me.
00:09:50Now, how can I say that?
00:09:51I say that because I got an education.
00:09:53I was around Cus D'Amato, who was head and shoulders above everybody.
00:09:59There wasn't a greater trainer, teacher, or manager than Cus.
00:10:04Inevitably, despite the dynamic Tyson's perfect record,
00:10:09Rooney has been and will continue to be targeted for his imperfections.
00:10:14Rooney balances the ballyhoo with the bellyaching by working with prison inmates.
00:10:19That, of course, is not unlike Cus D'Amato and the young, far from perfect Mike Tyson.
00:10:26We're all dealt hands in life.
00:10:28Now, these guys, you know, their environment or whatever,
00:10:31or they were just, you know, not too bright at the time they committed their crimes or whatever.
00:10:37So, well, I've seen that side a lot.
00:10:41So, and then I met a guy like Cus.
00:10:43So, well, now let me, you know, let me try to help.
00:10:45See, I don't need the job, but for the reason I told you before,
00:10:48it's a way for me to refine my skill.
00:10:51Whatever the pressure of his job, the responsibility that goes with the opportunity,
00:10:57life is a knockout for Kevin Rooney right now,
00:11:00as it is for Mike Tyson and everyone around him.
00:11:05I think we got a little bit of a dynasty going.
00:11:08And if we want to roll, I feel like I give him good advice.
00:11:11Now, if the fighter doesn't do it, that's good.
00:11:13If the fighter doesn't do it, that's bad.
00:11:15And if he doesn't do it, then they're going to look at me.
00:11:17So, so far, they haven't had the opportunity.
00:11:19But you can see the handwriting's on the wall.
00:11:21If something is to go wrong, it's all going to come on Kevin Rooney.
00:11:24But that's the business.
00:11:26So, you know, it's no big deal.
00:11:27I'm not going to lose any more head over it.
00:11:30Well, in just a few minutes, Kevin Rooney will bring his and Customato's charge into the ring
00:11:35to try to win it all in the heavyweight division.
00:11:38As the WBC and WBA champion Mike Tyson takes on the IVF heavyweight champion Tony Tucker,
00:11:44two undefeated fighters fighting for an undisputed title, only the second time in boxing history.
00:11:50You know, because of the celebrity status of our boxing champions, they're always being approached.
00:11:56Give me this.
00:11:56Donate that.
00:11:57Can we have one of those for charity?
00:11:59It isn't often that a champion does the approaching.
00:12:02It was only a year ago when Holy Angels Church in Chicago burnt to the ground.
00:12:06Faced with a bill of more than $3 million to rebuild, Father George Clements needed help.
00:12:11And there was Mike Tyson.
00:12:12I have no doubt in my mind that with the help of the heavyweight champion of this planet,
00:12:20that church will go up.
00:12:23No doubt whatsoever.
00:12:25With more on Mike Tyson, here's Larry Merchant.
00:12:28Two minutes.
00:12:29Two minutes.
00:12:30Mark.
00:12:31Mark.
00:12:33Sorry, we've had a little bit of a disturbance behind me here.
00:12:37I don't think that Mike Tyson is ready to be canonized just yet.
00:12:41At least outside the ring.
00:12:44Inside the ring, he is a candidate to be canonized in the boxing sense of the term.
00:12:50Which brings me to a point that I'd like to make personally.
00:12:54Long before there was a Mike Tyson or an HBO, I believe that John L. Sullivan had it right
00:13:00when he said, I can lick any man in the house.
00:13:04A true champion, a real champion, fights anyone and everyone.
00:13:08And we've had such champions in the last decade.
00:13:11Duran, Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Agueo, Larry Holmes before he got old and started to pick
00:13:18some of his opponents.
00:13:19And indeed, Michael Spinks as a light heavyweight, not as a heavyweight.
00:13:23Mike Tyson is the only heavyweight out there who says, I can lick any man in the house and
00:13:29is willing to back it up.
00:13:31That's why we have so many folks here, so many more folks out there.
00:13:34And that's why Tony Tucker is getting a chance tonight.
00:13:44After President Carter declared a boycott of the 1980 Olympics, the U.S. boxing team
00:13:49scheduled a series of exhibitions in Europe.
00:13:53En route to Poland, their plane crashed.
00:13:56There were no survivors.
00:13:57But the star of the team had missed the flight because of an injury sustained the day before.
00:14:04It really hit me.
00:14:06Because I said, you know, I was that close, you know, to being, you know, being dead along
00:14:11with the rest of the guys.
00:14:12I figured that God spared my life for a purpose.
00:14:16And that purpose was obviously to be a heavyweight champion of the world.
00:14:21Tony Tucker's career was guided by his father, Bob, a former amateur fighter himself.
00:14:27Although he would miss out on Olympic fame and instant fortune, he was well-respected.
00:14:34He won gold medals at the World Cup and then at the Pan American Games, which turned out
00:14:41to be the highlight of his amateur career.
00:14:43His father would follow him into the pro ranks.
00:14:49Well, I really don't look at it in the manner of father and son.
00:14:54I just look at it as fighters and trainer and manager.
00:15:00I try to put father and son out of my mind.
00:15:05But if something catches me, like his leg getting hurt, and I jump in the rain,
00:15:13so that even father comes around.
00:15:16Fathers and sons, however, are notorious in boxing for starting better than they finish.
00:15:22Heavyweight champion Joe Frazier, for example, couldn't reproduce himself and his son, Marvis.
00:15:28Couldn't make him over in his own furious image.
00:15:31In mid-career, Bobby Chez's father committed suicide.
00:15:37Later, Chez won a light heavyweight title.
00:15:40Emotions and or economics usually get in the way of a son's development.
00:15:44I figured if I put all my interest into my son, I couldn't lose either way, whether he was successful
00:15:54or not, because I had put all my work and money into him.
00:15:58And it was better than me putting my money into a billboard or putting it into a particular
00:16:04lady.
00:16:06Investing in that manner, because a lot of people spent a lot of money that way.
00:16:09I didn't see how I could lose.
00:16:12But the Tuckers had to sell off pieces of themselves, borrow money to get this far.
00:16:17Of the $1.9 million purse tonight, the fighter will get $600,000 before taxes.
00:16:24Promoter Cedric Kushner will get $350,000.
00:16:29As will promoters Jeff Levine and Josephine Abercrombie, who helped underwrite Kushner's
00:16:35investment in Tucker.
00:16:36Silent partners Dennis Rappaport and Alan Kornberg, a quarter of a million dollars between them.
00:16:44Bob Tucker's share comes to something less than that for all his trouble.
00:16:48And finally, Emmanuel Stewart, Tucker's first manager, gets $120,000.
00:16:54I made the move that was the best for Tony.
00:16:57I felt the best for his development.
00:16:59I knew ahead of time, and I told Tony to be patient.
00:17:02Because, I said, all those guys, you see what's your top, they're coming down just as fast.
00:17:09It proves me right, we got the championship.
00:17:13But I'll be completely right when he beats Tyson.
00:17:19A couple more fights and I can go sit down.
00:17:21My job will be done.
00:17:22I stood away from all that, the distractions, and kept on pushing and striving.
00:17:28And my dad was a very big help because he was right there behind me saying,
00:17:33you're going to get there, you're going to get there, just keep going, keep going.
00:17:36Bring me to the gym, keep going, keep going.
00:17:38So, through God and my father is why I'm here today.
00:17:44Few father-son teams get this far, with a big shot, for the big time, and the big buck.
00:17:52Even though their pie in the sky is sliced many, many ways.
00:17:57The downside is that his father may have impeded his development as an athlete
00:18:01by matching him exclusively with soft opposition,
00:18:05reducing his chance to win the big one against Mike Tyson.
00:18:08Because the idea is really not just to fight for it all, but to win it all.
00:18:17And you may have heard that the gluttonous Dennis Rappaport
00:18:21now wants a bigger piece of Tony Tucker's pie, $540,000.
00:18:25He tried and failed to stop this fight, as he has others.
00:18:30Apparently, that's his true calling in boxing.
00:18:35And so we are just about ready to get on with things here.
00:18:38We have a momentary delay in Mike Tyson's entrance,
00:18:40and incidentally, it is rather unique that Mike Tyson, who is a champion,
00:18:43will enter first.
00:18:44The reason for that, a coin toss.
00:18:46And Mike Tyson, then, will be the first man in the ring.
00:18:50Mike Tyson, of course, has been a heavyweight for 29 months as a professional,
00:18:53and people are saying he fights a lot.
00:18:55Well, he has. He's had 30 fights.
00:18:56But when you look at those numbers, not any more, certainly, than Jack Dempsey or George Foreman.
00:19:01Even more of a contemporary, of course, of Mike Tyson.
00:19:04Foreman fighting 32 times.
00:19:05Tyson fighting, of course, just about, in fact, a little over one fight a month during his professional career.
00:19:11But he has, of course, had 15 first-round knockouts.
00:19:14Here is the champion of the WBC and WBA, Mike Tyson.
00:19:18He is all business.
00:19:21He, of course, has won all 30 of his fights.
00:19:24Kevin Rooney, the man we spoke of a moment ago, leading him toward the ring.
00:19:29And, Ray Leonard, there's been some conversation about the celebrity status, the newfound celebrity status, if you will, of Mike Tyson.
00:19:35And maybe it's hurting him.
00:19:36Maybe that's why he left training camp.
00:19:38There was that incident, of course, in the parking lot in Los Angeles.
00:19:41Now there's conversation.
00:19:42He should have a bodyguard.
00:19:44He should have somebody deflecting the public away from him.
00:19:46What's your feeling about the whole celebrity of Mike Tyson?
00:19:49Well, Barry, once you reach a certain status, quite an athlete of physical or either verbal confrontation, I think with Mike Tyson, he just thought it.
00:19:57And you need someone in there to deflect or alleviate the pressure or even the arbitrator, which I have.
00:20:03Of course, Tyson himself rejects the idea of a bodyguard.
00:20:07I mean, here's a guy who can beat anybody in the world.
00:20:09Sort of like somebody trying to force the spokesman on Lee Iacocca.
00:20:13And Tyson's entrance to the ring literally being heralded.
00:20:19And there, of course, is the record that we spoke of.
00:20:2127 knockouts in the 30 fights of Mike Tyson in a 29-month career.
00:20:27He, of course, has already become the youngest man to ever win the heavyweight championship.
00:20:32Sugar Ray Leonard, at this point, we always talk about what to look for, what are the good points, and, yes, what are the bad points of the two combatants.
00:20:38Let's talk tonight about Sugar Ray's tip of the night.
00:20:41How do you see this one?
00:20:42First of all, Mike Tyson.
00:20:43Well, Barry, quite naturally, power and strength is no big secret with Mike Tyson.
00:20:47But what I'm impressed with is the hand speed of Mike Tyson.
00:20:50Seen here against Cheryl Burbitt, exceptionally quick hands for a heavyweight.
00:20:55Once again, we see him against Pinklin Thomas.
00:20:57Great hand speed, which enables him to put his combinations together very well.
00:21:01He did a fantastic job here against Thomas.
00:21:04Now, something I'm advocate of is the left jab.
00:21:08Now, here we see Pinklin Thomas in the white trunks using that left jab to break the rhythm of Mike Tyson.
00:21:14It enables you to keep your man off balance.
00:21:17Tony Tucker here in the white trunks.
00:21:19His jab is kind of quick but not consistent.
00:21:21Also, he drops his left jab.
00:21:23You notice that?
00:21:24And it's quite detrimental against a guy with a counter-right hand like Mike Tyson.
00:21:30I also believe mobility, lateral movement, is very, very important.
00:21:35You can't be a stationary target.
00:21:36Here, Tony Tucker in the range.
00:21:38Stationary target gets hit by a right hand.
00:21:40Left hook goes down against Buster Douglas.
00:21:43So, that's what to look for.
00:21:45And if Tony Tucker isn't going to be able to beat Mike Tyson, he may be able to blind him.
00:21:49If you look at that outfit, Tony Tucker has come into the ring.
00:21:52He sprinted into the ring.
00:21:53Well, whether he sprints out remains to be seen.
00:21:55He's won 34, not 35.
00:21:57It was that fight with Danny Sutton.
00:21:59Remember that he went down with an injured knee.
00:22:01It was ruled no contest and not, as some people have said, a victory.
00:22:04Let's take a look at the table with tape.
00:22:05And there is one number that really jumps out at you.
00:22:07It's down at the bottom.
00:22:08And that is the 10 1⁄2 inch, or rather the 12 1⁄2 inch reach advantage, 10 1⁄2 inch, beg your pardon,
00:22:13reach advantage of Tony Tucker over Mike Tyson.
00:22:17And don't forget that 14 inch hair advantage.
00:22:20And here is our punch stat numbers to give you a profile of the quantitative number of punches that they throw in fights.
00:22:28Tyson threw only 26 per round against Bonecrusher Smith because Smith was hugging him so much.
00:22:33They throw around the same number of punches.
00:22:35Tyson, of course, throws a lot harder punches, and that's shown in this graphic on jabs.
00:22:42He throws a few jabs.
00:22:43Tucker throws more.
00:22:44He's going to have to throw a lot more in this fight.
00:22:47And we will take a look at the rules that it is an amalgam this time of the IBF, WBC, and WBF.
00:22:52I'd love to have been in those meetings.
00:22:53It must have been like the bar scene in Star Wars.
00:22:5410-point must system.
00:22:56Three judges score the fight.
00:22:57No standing eight count.
00:22:58You could be saved by the bell only in the last round.
00:22:59And, of course, the one that really could have an effect on this fight,
00:23:02but the three-knockdown rule is, in effect, contrary to many fights.
00:23:06Now, let's go up to the ring announcer, Chuck Hall.
00:23:08We'll get the free fight introduction.

00:24:28This is the main event of the evening.
00:24:31Twelve rounds of boxing for the unification of the heavyweight championship of the world.
00:24:38Introducing,
00:24:39in the blue corner,
00:24:42fighting out of Houston, Texas,
00:24:45weighing 221 pounds,
00:24:48with a professional record of 34 wins,
00:24:50no defeats,
00:24:5229 KOs,
00:24:54he is the IBF heavyweight champion of the world,
00:24:58Tony,
00:24:59TNT,
00:25:01Tucker.
00:25:01And in the red corner,
00:25:09from Catskills,
00:25:10New York,
00:25:12he too weighs 221 pounds.
00:25:15He is undefeated in his professional career,
00:25:1830 wins,
00:25:19no defeats,
00:25:21with 27 KOs.
00:25:22He is the WBA and WBC heavyweight champion of the world,
00:25:29Iron Mike Tyson.
00:25:40Okay, now,
00:25:45here we go,
00:25:46now,
00:25:47you've had good trucks in the discipline room,
00:25:48you protect yourself at all times.
00:25:50In the equation of Mr. Tucker is Chief Second.
00:25:53In the equation of Mr. Tyson is Chief Second.
00:25:55Let's get it on,
00:25:56come on!
00:25:57There's a line in the movie Full Metal Jacket,
00:26:00you can talk the talk,
00:26:02can you walk the walk?
00:26:04It's time for Tony Tucker now to walk the walk.
00:26:08Or run the run,
00:26:09as it were.
00:26:10And we'll see what kind of tactic Tucker takes.
00:26:13I was expecting Mike Tyson to jump right on Tony Tucker.
00:26:16Tucker,
00:26:17I have figured that he should at least tie his man up,
00:26:20try to frustrate Mike Tyson.
00:26:23But is he strong enough to do that?
00:26:25Well,
00:26:26that was a good right hand by Tucker.
00:26:28That might have been the best shot that Mike Tyson has ever taken,
00:26:31right there.
00:26:32Did you know that uppercut blocked Mike Tyson?
00:26:35This man,
00:26:37Tucker,
00:26:37may have found out a weakness.
00:26:40He may have seen something.
00:26:41Technically speaking,
00:26:42no one gave Tucker a chance.
00:26:44But there are miracles here.
00:26:46The last time Tony Tucker lost a fight was in 1978.
00:26:50You know,
00:26:50a lot of times people say,
00:26:51well,
00:26:52what do you see in Mike Tyson?
00:26:53And we always felt that he was susceptible to take jazz.
00:26:56But I think what Tucker saw in Tyson was the uppercut.
00:27:00He was susceptible to take the uppercut because of his foul,
00:27:02the way he launches in.
00:27:03That was one of the few times I've ever seen Mike Tyson stop by a punch.
00:27:19What happened then was the best thing that Tucker has done.
00:27:23Maybe got some respect for Mike Tyson.
00:27:26Tucker said when we talked to him,
00:27:28he said,
00:27:28I'm not worried about what he's going to do to me.
00:27:29I'm worried about what I'm going to do to him.
00:27:31That's confidence.
00:27:33Another right hand.
00:27:37And another right hand by Tucker.
00:27:51Tucker seems willing to brawl with Mike Tyson early.
00:27:54Step back.
00:27:55Get him up,
00:27:56Tony.
00:27:56Come on.
00:27:59That was a left hand by Tyson.
00:28:01Also,
00:28:02Tucker said,
00:28:03Tucker stated that because no one has taken him to win,
00:28:06that was motivation.
00:28:07And he's fighting with sheer motivation here.
00:28:10A lot,
00:28:10a lot of confidence.
00:28:11Like I said,
00:28:12he likes being the underdog,
00:28:13even though it's the first time he's been one.
00:28:15Probably since he was an amateur.
00:28:17You know what's happening.
00:28:18Every time Mike reaches in,
00:28:19Tony comes with the right hand.
00:28:20A kind of right hand.
00:28:21He's step back,
00:28:23but it's the country.
00:28:26Step back.
00:28:26Here we go.
00:28:30Another thing you have to say about Tucker
00:28:32is that he has fought to the level of his competition
00:28:35and just a little bit better enough to win.
00:28:37Against James Broad,
00:28:38frankly,
00:28:38I didn't think he fought that well.
00:28:40But it was against James Broad.
00:28:41Against Douglas,
00:28:42he fought a little bit better.
00:28:43And now we'll see what he can do
00:28:44against certainly the best fighter he's fought so far.
00:28:46Step back, Mike.
00:28:46Step back, Tony.
00:28:48Step back,
00:28:48clean.
00:28:49Here we go,
00:28:49here we go.
00:28:50He had a right hand,
00:28:53but he took a right from Tyson.
00:28:54And another big right by Mike Tyson.
00:28:58Step back, Mike.
00:29:00Did a very good first round
00:29:02for both men.
00:29:04And particularly for Tucker.
00:29:08And the great left hand
00:29:09at the bell by Tyson.
00:29:15Well,
00:29:16Tony Tucker is a 10-to-1 underdog.
00:29:18He wasn't 10-to-1 in that round.
00:29:21He wasn't 10-to-1 in that round.
00:29:24Now, let's see the uppercut
00:29:38almost immediately after the bell.
00:29:40He follows the right with a left
00:29:42and rocks Tyson.
00:29:44The first time we've ever seen Tyson
00:29:46really rock back like that.
00:29:53And again,
00:29:54it looks like Tucker has been coached
00:29:56to look for the left here.
00:29:57Now, there's the right hand
00:29:58that landed high on the head
00:30:00of Tucker
00:30:01and did no damage.
00:30:04And sitting way up
00:30:05in left field,
00:30:06folks,
00:30:07is Michael Spinks
00:30:08sitting in the last row
00:30:09of the balcony here
00:30:10at this place.
00:30:11We'll show you a picture
00:30:12of him later on.
00:30:15Mike Tyson is still trying
00:30:17to keep that pressure going.
00:30:18Kevin Rooney told him
00:30:21go to the body.
00:30:22Don't look for the one punch
00:30:23to the head.
00:30:25What I like about Tucker
00:30:26is the fact that
00:30:27he's throwing combinations.
00:30:28He's not doing one, two.
00:30:29He's putting three,
00:30:30four punches together.
00:30:32And he's following up
00:30:32with the left uppercut
00:30:33and the left hook.
00:30:34Land with the left uppercut
00:30:35that time.
00:30:36Just has to keep those hands up.
00:30:38That's very important.
00:30:40Because Mike is rocking
00:30:41left and right,
00:30:42left and right
00:30:43and looking for an opening.
00:30:44Here we go.
00:30:48Well, you know, Ray,
00:30:49I harken back to your fight
00:30:51with Marvin Hagler
00:30:52where after the first round
00:30:53there was no question
00:30:54in my mind at least
00:30:54that your confidence
00:30:55just really surged
00:30:56and you have to think
00:30:57the same thing
00:30:58about Tony Tucker.
00:30:59Surviving the first round
00:31:00actually can turn
00:31:01the tables around
00:31:02a fighter.
00:31:03It gives him the confidence
00:31:04and again,
00:31:05more like in Tony Tucker's
00:31:07in fact he's throwing
00:31:08one, two, three.
00:31:09He's following up
00:31:10with the left hook.
00:31:11He's putting it in
00:31:11this combination
00:31:12with the left hook.
00:31:13He's using his height,
00:31:19his reach.
00:31:32Good body shot by Tyson.
00:31:34That's exactly what
00:31:35Kevin Rooney
00:31:35was telling him to do
00:31:36in the corner.
00:31:37Now see,
00:31:37this is what
00:31:38Tucker needs to do.
00:31:39Keep Tyler's man up.
00:31:40Every time he gets inside,
00:31:41you've got to tie those arms up
00:31:43and not let Tyson
00:31:44work that body.
00:31:47Tyson's changed.
00:31:48Tyson's trying to slow
00:31:49Tucker down
00:31:49about body shot.
00:31:51He's working his body,
00:31:51trying to slow those legs down
00:31:53and bring those hands down.
00:31:57Oh, oh, oh.
00:31:58Tyson, Tyson.
00:31:59That was a little bit low
00:32:00and I think it's going to draw
00:32:01a warning.
00:32:01You go down there again
00:32:02and come in.
00:32:02Come on.
00:32:08Tyson, two good jabs.
00:32:11Interestingly enough,
00:32:12Kevin Rooney had told us
00:32:13that when he tells Tyson
00:32:14to jab,
00:32:15he's not telling him
00:32:16to jab to box.
00:32:17He's telling him
00:32:17to jab to get inside.
00:32:19What I want you to look for,
00:32:20but also when Tyson comes in,
00:32:22he puts both feet together
00:32:23so it's easy to be knocked down.
00:32:28That was a good example.
00:32:29That uppercut
00:32:30is going to do the job
00:32:31over and over again.
00:32:33Almost hooked him
00:32:34with the left hand
00:32:34before bringing the uppercut
00:32:36underneath.
00:32:36He did hold him.
00:32:37That is a look of confidence
00:32:38in the face
00:32:39of Tony Tucker.
00:32:41He's telling his man up
00:32:42once again.
00:32:43Very smart thing to do.
00:32:46He really wants
00:32:46to frustrate
00:32:47Mike Tyson.
00:32:50That was a left hand
00:32:51by Tyson
00:32:52but it did not appear
00:32:53to hurt Tucker.
00:33:00Tucker wasn't given
00:33:13much chance
00:33:14but of the five billion
00:33:15people on the planet,
00:33:16he's the only one
00:33:17who has a chance
00:33:18to beat Mike Tyson
00:33:19tonight.
00:33:20and right now
00:33:21he's taking advantage
00:33:22of it.
00:33:22You have to keep
00:33:23your balance.
00:33:23Come under.
00:33:25You have to keep
00:33:26your balance.
00:33:27Come under.
00:33:28See if you're doing
00:33:29that.
00:33:29You have to keep
00:33:29your balance.
00:33:29When you punch him,
00:33:31walk him.
00:33:31Turn him sideways
00:33:32and walk him.
00:33:35There's Michael Spinks
00:33:37way up in the last row
00:33:38of the bleachers here.
00:33:40He went up there
00:33:41as a publicity stunt
00:33:42to get some attention
00:33:44to get a future fight
00:33:46with Tyson.
00:33:46Of course,
00:33:47when he was in the tournament,
00:33:48that's about as near
00:33:49to the ring
00:33:49as he wanted
00:33:50to get with Tyson.
00:33:51I think that was
00:33:52Bob Uecker
00:33:52sitting next to him.
00:33:53Wasn't it?
00:33:58You got it.
00:34:00You're making a miss
00:34:01real good.
00:34:01You've got to come up
00:34:02and punch him
00:34:02right away.
00:34:11This is the third round.
00:34:12A lot of people
00:34:12did not think
00:34:13it would go this far.
00:34:15Can we go again?
00:34:16Chinese man out.
00:34:16Again, guys,
00:34:18good tactics here.
00:34:20Can't allow Mike Tyson
00:34:22to punch inside.
00:34:24Now we need to see
00:34:25some dance like Tucker.
00:34:26And some lateral movement
00:34:27which we see now.
00:34:29And catch up,
00:34:30trying to catch Tyson
00:34:31coming in with his hand.
00:34:33Hold, hold, hold.
00:34:34Tie, tie, tie.
00:34:34Set back.
00:34:35Now, Mike,
00:34:36set back, tie.
00:34:37Now, keep your punches
00:34:38up.
00:34:38Now, we're down there again.
00:34:39Come on, come on.
00:34:41Mills Wain,
00:34:42very take charge
00:34:43as a referee.
00:34:43No-nonsense guy.
00:34:45Tucker with another
00:34:46left hook
00:34:46to the head
00:34:47of Mike Tyson.
00:34:51All right,
00:34:51party.
00:34:52Party first.
00:34:53Gobination.
00:34:54All right, get off that neck,
00:34:55Tony.
00:34:55Get off that neck.
00:34:57Get off that neck.
00:34:58Get off that neck.
00:34:59Gobination.
00:35:00Tucker tied his man up
00:35:00and got out of the corner.
00:35:04There was a good
00:35:05right hand again
00:35:05by Tucker.
00:35:06In close.
00:35:07Catching Tyson
00:35:08on the way in.
00:35:10He's facing
00:35:10the left hook guy.
00:35:11What's allowing
00:35:22Tony Tucker
00:35:23to get that hook
00:35:25and that uppercut in?
00:35:26What's happening
00:35:27is the lateral movement
00:35:28that Tucker has,
00:35:29his jab,
00:35:30he's catching Mike
00:35:31as Mike's boring
00:35:31and coming into his head.
00:35:33The uppercut
00:35:34has been doing
00:35:34a tremendous
00:35:35and very effective
00:35:36job here.
00:35:38Tony Tucker
00:35:38is doubling up
00:35:39his punches
00:35:40better than I've
00:35:40ever seen him do.
00:35:41That was a good
00:35:45left hand
00:35:46and that staggers
00:35:47Tony Tucker.
00:35:49I'll get him
00:35:49tying this man up.
00:35:53It doesn't seem
00:35:54like much.
00:35:55It doesn't seem
00:35:55expected for Tucker
00:35:56to be tying up.
00:35:57Come on, come on.
00:35:58He's getting warned
00:35:58from Mills Lane.
00:35:59But the fact of the
00:36:00matter is,
00:36:01frustration
00:36:02is what it caused.
00:36:05It creates
00:36:05frustration in the
00:36:06fight.
00:36:06He's got two hands
00:36:10of three, Mike.
00:36:11Two hands of three.
00:36:13All right,
00:36:13now you're tired.
00:36:14Here we go.
00:36:15I'm going to step back.
00:36:15Go get my attention
00:36:17final.
00:36:18Move him, move him.
00:36:20Got it.
00:36:24All right,
00:36:25we'll step back.
00:36:30I'm going to step back.
00:36:30Here we go.
00:36:33Crowd booing the tactics
00:36:52of Tony Tucker,
00:36:53but I'm not sure
00:36:54you don't disagree
00:36:54with those tactics.
00:36:55I don't disagree at all
00:36:56because Tony's
00:36:56going to try this man up.
00:36:58That was a good
00:36:58right hand by Tucker
00:36:59again.
00:36:59But they're uppercuts,
00:37:00Barry.
00:37:01They're uppercuts.
00:37:03I can't believe he's
00:37:05telling this man up.
00:37:06Trust me.
00:37:07Mike Tyson.
00:37:07Short face of Mike Tyson.
00:37:14There has to be
00:37:15concern now
00:37:16in Tyson's corner.
00:37:18This is the most
00:37:19competitive fight
00:37:20he has ever been in.
00:37:21One punch at a time.
00:37:22It makes you listen
00:37:23to any pop down
00:37:23one time.
00:37:24You understand?
00:37:24You gotta use your jab.
00:37:25You gotta bounce him
00:37:26a little bit.
00:37:26You understand?
00:37:26Get the bounce
00:37:27in your legs.
00:37:277-7 combination.
00:37:29You gotta combination.
00:37:29You gotta throw
00:37:30the combination.
00:37:30You're just looking
00:37:31for one shot.
00:37:33There you see Tucker
00:37:40backing up
00:37:41catching Tyson
00:37:42on the way in
00:37:43with his long arms.
00:37:46And there
00:37:47an uppercut.
00:37:48He's fighting
00:37:49a perfect fight
00:37:50and
00:37:52I'm going to show you
00:37:54my scorecard
00:37:55here in a moment.
00:37:55So far
00:37:56I have Tucker
00:37:57winning two rounds,
00:37:58Tyson winning one,
00:38:00Tucker ahead
00:38:00by a point.
00:38:01This is of course
00:38:02about as unofficial
00:38:03as you can get
00:38:04a scorecard.
00:38:05Our unofficial
00:38:06official judge
00:38:07Harold Letterman
00:38:08is not with us
00:38:08tonight.
00:38:09He will be back
00:38:09with us in future
00:38:10fights.
00:38:11We start the
00:38:12fourth round
00:38:13and in Tyson's
00:38:15corner they told
00:38:15him to box more.
00:38:16Just get your legs
00:38:17under you.
00:38:18Well in the corner
00:38:19of Mike Tyson
00:38:20we need to see
00:38:21combinations
00:38:22not look for
00:38:23one punch.
00:38:25And that's where
00:38:25normally Tyson
00:38:26is able to
00:38:27dominate his opponent
00:38:27because he throws
00:38:28a barrage of punches.
00:38:30Not one punch
00:38:30because one punch
00:38:31normally is not
00:38:32going to do it.
00:38:34Interestingly enough
00:38:35it is Tony Tucker
00:38:36who really is
00:38:37dictating the tempo
00:38:37of the fight
00:38:38not Mike Tyson.
00:38:39I've never seen
00:38:39that before.
00:38:40You see the intensity
00:38:41in Tony Tucker.
00:38:43There was a big
00:38:43left hand by Tyson
00:38:44and that was
00:38:45the one big punch.
00:38:47And another one.
00:38:48You see this is
00:38:51what Tyson wanted.
00:38:52He wanted
00:38:53Tucker to stand
00:38:54there and exchange
00:38:55punch for punch.
00:38:56In this case
00:38:57normally Tyson
00:38:59comes down on top.
00:38:59Get him up
00:39:00get him up
00:39:00Tucker come on.
00:39:03I want to sit back.
00:39:05Alright Tony
00:39:05if you go down
00:39:06there again
00:39:06I'm going to
00:39:06penalize your foot.
00:39:07I think what
00:39:07the Tyson
00:39:08corner is looking
00:39:09for is whether
00:39:10or not Tucker
00:39:10can withstand
00:39:11this type of
00:39:11question.
00:39:12Get him up
00:39:12Mike come on.
00:39:14Mills Lane
00:39:15wants more
00:39:15giving a warning
00:39:16the second one
00:39:17to Tony Tucker.
00:39:18now he's going to
00:39:19talk to us.
00:39:19Now both of you
00:39:20going downstairs
00:39:20watch out
00:39:21Tucker come on.
00:39:29Now sit back
00:39:30come on
00:39:30sit back
00:39:31get back
00:39:32and head to go.
00:39:32Tyson needs to
00:39:46use his jab
00:39:47to get in
00:39:47because a lot
00:39:48of times
00:39:48he's lunging in
00:39:49which makes him
00:39:50very very vulnerable
00:39:51for a counter punch.
00:39:53Right hand.
00:39:56The jab of
00:39:58Tony Tucker
00:39:58is starting
00:39:58with again.
00:39:59just has to
00:40:02be more
00:40:03consistent.
00:40:04Here we go.
00:40:08Take it
00:40:08downstairs
00:40:09sometime.
00:40:09He needs
00:40:09to throw
00:40:10jab downstairs
00:40:10bring it
00:40:11back up to
00:40:11the head.
00:40:13The right
00:40:13hand again
00:40:14by Tyson
00:40:14Tucker appears
00:40:16unheard
00:40:17again.
00:40:18Definitely
00:40:18has his legs
00:40:18back under
00:40:19him after
00:40:19being hurt
00:40:20earlier in
00:40:20this round.
00:40:22Watch out!
00:40:24The voice
00:40:24you're hearing
00:40:25is the voice
00:40:26of Kevin
00:40:26Rooney.
00:40:33What a good
00:40:34shot.
00:40:36And Tyson
00:40:36with another
00:40:37left hand.
00:40:4125 seconds
00:40:42left.
00:40:43Round 4.
00:40:44Very competitive
00:40:44fight.
00:40:45So far.
00:40:45Tyson's just
00:40:46trying to
00:40:47wear his man
00:40:47down.
00:40:47He's just
00:40:48trying to
00:40:48throw that
00:40:48movement down.
00:40:49That movement
00:40:50seems to be
00:40:51affecting Mike's
00:40:52punches because
00:40:52he's not able
00:40:53to get his
00:40:54punches in
00:40:54there.
00:41:01Every time
00:41:02the Tucker
00:41:02stands still
00:41:03you'll notice
00:41:04a big left
00:41:04hook lands
00:41:05for Mike
00:41:05Tyson.
00:41:09Tyson has
00:41:09settled down
00:41:10in that round
00:41:11going for a
00:41:12long fight.
00:41:13Now he knows
00:41:14he just has
00:41:14to fight him
00:41:15hit him
00:41:16and if the
00:41:17knockout
00:41:17comes it
00:41:18comes.
00:41:23Put your
00:41:23head back
00:41:24put your
00:41:24head back
00:41:24like that.
00:41:27Open up.
00:41:29Look.
00:41:30Two good
00:41:30real good
00:41:31right hands.
00:41:32Two real good
00:41:32right hands
00:41:33for the body
00:41:33there.
00:41:34He came back
00:41:34with a left
00:41:35hook one.
00:41:35You gotta
00:41:36contact him
00:41:36more on that.
00:41:37You still
00:41:37gotta jab
00:41:37with this guy.
00:41:38What are you
00:41:38gonna do a jab
00:41:39with him?
00:41:39You understand
00:41:40me?
00:41:40You're going
00:41:41and bouncing
00:41:41all right
00:41:41there.
00:41:42They're making
00:41:43a jab.
00:41:43They're fly.
00:41:45And them
00:41:45committed
00:41:45they're
00:41:45make you
00:41:46move.
00:41:48Okay.
00:41:50up and
00:41:55down.
00:41:56Tyson is
00:41:56working
00:41:57closer
00:41:57into
00:41:59Tucker.
00:41:59There you
00:42:00saw that
00:42:00he followed
00:42:01a right
00:42:02to the body
00:42:02that was
00:42:03an effective
00:42:03ray.
00:42:04But then
00:42:05he had him
00:42:05there for
00:42:06the left
00:42:06that he
00:42:07did throw
00:42:07right behind
00:42:08him.
00:42:08But Tyson
00:42:09is starting
00:42:09to double
00:42:09his punch
00:42:10up a little
00:42:10bit more.
00:42:11He's starting
00:42:11to put
00:42:11his combinations
00:42:12together.
00:42:13A lot
00:42:13more
00:42:13than
00:42:13earlier
00:42:14round.
00:42:15And in
00:42:16doing so
00:42:16he should
00:42:17be able
00:42:17to land
00:42:17on the
00:42:18chin
00:42:18of
00:42:19Tony
00:42:20something
00:42:20that
00:42:20could
00:42:20become
00:42:21a
00:42:21factor
00:42:21that
00:42:21you
00:42:21never
00:42:21thought
00:42:22would
00:42:22have
00:42:22is
00:42:22the
00:42:22fact
00:42:23that
00:42:23this
00:42:23only
00:42:24a
00:42:24day
00:42:24ago
00:42:24was
00:42:25a
00:42:50good
00:42:50good
00:42:50hand
00:42:51speed
00:42:51by
00:42:51Tony
00:42:52Tucker
00:42:52I
00:42:54just
00:42:54don't
00:42:54like
00:42:55when
00:42:55he
00:42:55stands
00:42:55there
00:42:55and
00:42:55exchange
00:42:56punches
00:42:56Tucker's
00:42:58corner telling
00:42:59him to wait
00:42:59for Tyson
00:43:00to make
00:43:00his move
00:43:01and then
00:43:02do your
00:43:02thing
00:43:02to make
00:43:04to make
00:43:05the
00:43:07better
00:43:07of
00:43:07that
00:43:07exchange
00:43:08Tucker
00:43:13said
00:43:13that
00:43:14everybody
00:43:14that
00:43:14Tyson
00:43:15fought
00:43:15has
00:43:15either
00:43:15run
00:43:16or
00:43:16stood
00:43:16right
00:43:16in
00:43:16front
00:43:17of
00:43:17him
00:43:17and
00:43:17he
00:43:17said
00:43:17what
00:43:17I'm
00:43:17going to
00:43:18do
00:43:18is
00:43:18I'm
00:43:18going to
00:43:18move
00:43:19and
00:43:19I'll
00:43:19be
00:43:19firing
00:43:19and
00:43:20through
00:43:20the
00:43:20first
00:43:21three
00:43:21rounds
00:43:21at
00:43:22any
00:43:22rate
00:43:22I'm
00:43:22not so
00:43:23sure
00:43:23about
00:43:23the
00:43:23fourth
00:43:23but
00:43:23the
00:43:24first
00:43:24three
00:43:24rounds
00:43:24exactly
00:43:25what
00:43:25he
00:43:25did
00:43:25I
00:43:26noticed
00:43:27that
00:43:27Tony
00:43:27Tucker's
00:43:27left
00:43:28hand
00:43:28has
00:43:28done
00:43:28the
00:43:28job
00:43:29that
00:43:30could
00:43:30be
00:43:30very
00:43:30inviting
00:43:31for
00:43:31a
00:43:31right
00:43:32hand
00:43:32a

00:43:32on
00:43:33right
00:43:33there's
00:43:34left hook
00:43:35but
00:43:36you
00:43:36notice
00:43:36the
00:43:36left
00:43:36hand
00:43:37of
00:43:37Tony
00:43:37Tucker
00:43:37is
00:43:37starting
00:43:38to drop

00:43:42had
00:43:43that

00:43:48that's
00:43:55I'm
00:44:02surprised
00:44:03there's
00:44:03not
00:44:03a lot
00:44:04of
00:44:04head
00:44:04moving
00:44:05from
00:44:05Mike
00:44:05Tyson
00:44:05he's
00:44:06just
00:44:06walking
00:44:06directly
00:44:06in
00:44:07front
00:44:07of
00:44:07Tony
00:44:08Tucker
00:44:09and
00:44:09that's
00:44:10where Tony
00:44:10would get
00:44:10those
00:44:11partners
00:44:11off
00:44:11he should
00:44:13be
00:44:14having
00:44:14a little
00:44:14more
00:44:14head
00:44:14moving

00:44:31right
00:44:31come on
00:44:31have a
00:44:31go
00:44:31there was
00:44:36a right
00:44:37hand
00:44:37in
00:44:37close
00:44:38by
00:44:38Tyson
00:44:38that was
00:44:41a right
00:44:41hand
00:44:41but you
00:44:42know
00:44:42the problem
00:44:42that Tyson
00:44:43is making
00:44:43is one
00:44:44punch
00:44:45one
00:44:45punch
00:44:45we have
00:44:46to see
00:44:46more
00:44:46combinations
00:44:47if you
00:44:47want
00:44:48to get
00:44:48Tucker

00:46:30I
00:46:32think
00:46:32Tony
00:46:33Tucker
00:46:33has
00:46:33surprised
00:46:34a lot
00:46:35of

00:46:35right
00:46:38hand
00:46:38by Tyson
00:46:38Tucker's
00:46:41corner
00:46:41warned him
00:46:41not to
00:46:42tie his
00:46:43man up
00:46:43which I
00:46:43think
00:46:43is a
00:46:44good
00:46:44move
00:46:44because
00:46:45it
00:46:45doesn't
00:46:46allow
00:46:46Tyson
00:46:46to
00:46:46point
00:46:47but
00:46:47instead
00:46:48they
00:46:48wanted

00:46:49and
00:46:49go
00:46:49at

00:46:50which I
00:46:51think
00:46:51could be
00:46:51a
00:46:52cult
00:46:52mistake
00:46:52Mike Tyson's

00:48:10advantage
00:48:10reach
00:48:10advantage
00:48:11and
00:48:11a good
00:48:11boxer
00:48:12and
00:48:13I tell you
00:48:13he impressed me
00:48:14with his foot
00:48:14move
00:48:15because I didn't
00:48:15expect that
00:48:15much from him
00:48:16but the
00:48:17fact of
00:48:17the matter
00:48:18is
00:48:18he's
00:48:18making
00:48:18matters
00:48:19very
00:48:19very
00:48:19tough
00:48:20for
00:48:20Mike
00:48:20Tyson
00:48:20to
00:48:22get
00:48:22inside
00:48:23Tyson
00:48:24looks
00:48:25right
00:48:25now
00:48:25like
00:48:25he's
00:48:25in it
00:48:26for the
00:48:26long haul
00:48:26here
00:48:27and there
00:48:30was a big
00:48:30right hand
00:48:31Tucker
00:48:32says
00:48:32no no
00:48:33I'm not
00:48:33hurt
00:48:33I've always
00:48:34found that
00:48:34to mean
00:48:35I'm hurt
00:48:35that right
00:48:36hand
00:48:36landed
00:48:37because
00:48:37again
00:48:38the habit
00:48:40that Tucker
00:48:41makes his
00:48:41drop in his
00:48:42left hand
00:48:42inside
00:48:43he took
00:48:52another right
00:48:53hand
00:48:53got cute
00:48:54and paid
00:48:54the price
00:48:55I think
00:48:59he's watched
00:49:00my fight
00:49:00before
00:49:00I think
00:49:01he has
00:49:01too
00:49:01I think
00:49:02his timing
00:49:02is not
00:49:03as good
00:49:03as yours
00:49:04let's take a look
00:49:18let's take a look
00:49:32at that right
00:49:33hand
00:49:33that Mike
00:49:33Tyson
00:49:33got in
00:49:34here
00:49:34you see
00:49:35he used
00:49:35the left
00:49:35hand
00:49:36just as a way
00:49:37to get in
00:49:38and then
00:49:39firing the right
00:49:40behind it
00:49:41and this is good
00:49:42fighting
00:49:43now that he's
00:49:44settled down
00:49:44the great fighters
00:49:45don't go out
00:49:46looking for a quick
00:49:46knockout
00:49:47the great fighters
00:49:48go out
00:49:48and fight
00:49:49and when the
00:49:50opportunity
00:49:51for the big punch
00:49:51comes in
00:49:52they take it
00:49:53like that
00:49:54and here's
00:49:58my scorecard
00:49:59so far
00:49:59I have Tyson
00:50:00coming on
00:50:01in the last
00:50:01three rounds
00:50:02because Tucker
00:50:02has not been
00:50:03throwing as many
00:50:04punches as he did
00:50:05earlier
00:50:05that little bit
00:50:08of insolence
00:50:08he had at the
00:50:09start of the fight
00:50:10to establish himself
00:50:11doesn't seem
00:50:12to be there
00:50:13anymore
00:50:13he has to
00:50:14go on the
00:50:14attack
00:50:15see Mike
00:50:21is not able
00:50:21to get set
00:50:22he's not able
00:50:23to set his
00:50:23punches up
00:50:24to land
00:50:25on Tucker
00:50:26there he got a warning
00:50:28from Mills Lane
00:50:29for punching
00:50:29while he was
00:50:30breaking
00:50:31but again
00:50:33you notice the
00:50:34movement
00:50:34of Tucker's
00:50:35really scoring
00:50:36Tyson off
00:50:37not allowing him
00:50:38to get inside
00:50:39and be effective
00:50:40Tyson's jab
00:50:42in the last
00:50:43three rounds
00:50:43has been effective
00:50:44in allowing him
00:50:46to get inside
00:50:47on Tony Tucker
00:50:48it's not a jab
00:50:49like Tucker's
00:50:50Tucker predominantly
00:50:51a boxer
00:50:51Tyson of course
00:50:53a banger
00:50:53but his jab
00:50:55doesn't allow
00:50:55him to work
00:50:56in
00:50:56come on
00:50:57sit back
00:50:57here we go
00:50:59come on
00:50:59and we see
00:51:06Tucker trying
00:51:07to at least get a
00:51:08second win
00:51:09watch the head
00:51:10watch the head
00:51:10watch the head
00:51:10watch the head
00:51:11watch the head
00:51:12watch the head
00:51:14I'm impressed
00:51:15Tucker's really
00:51:16doing a fantastic
00:51:17job
00:51:17he hasn't been as
00:51:18tense as he was
00:51:19in the first fight
00:51:20has he
00:51:21where he was just
00:51:22like he was
00:51:23just come out
00:51:24of an ice
00:51:24box
00:51:25how tense
00:51:27and tentative
00:51:28he was
00:51:29in the fight
00:51:30with Douglas
00:51:30he appeared to be
00:51:31he is loose
00:51:32throughout most
00:51:33of this fight
00:51:33he's very relaxed
00:51:35I think what he did
00:51:36was the first round
00:51:36when he rocked
00:51:37Mike Tyson
00:51:38he said hey
00:51:38I can punch too
00:51:39well in fact
00:51:40in that first fight
00:51:41he got a cramp
00:51:42in his left arm
00:51:42in the first round
00:51:43and not actually
00:51:44for him
00:51:44it was with him
00:51:45the whole fight
00:51:46and he feels
00:51:49it was just
00:51:50from tenseness
00:51:50also
00:51:51I think
00:51:52in the back
00:51:53of Tucker's
00:51:54the fact
00:51:55that the more
00:51:55rounds he goes
00:51:55the more credibility
00:51:56that he has
00:51:57because he wants
00:51:58to prove
00:51:58that he is
00:51:59indeed a great fighter
00:52:00another thing
00:52:01that I feel
00:52:02we should at least
00:52:02point out here
00:52:03there was a rumor
00:52:04in Las Vegas
00:52:05boxing circles
00:52:06the last couple of days
00:52:08that
00:52:08once more
00:52:11one
00:52:11third time
00:52:12he said
00:52:13the next time
00:52:13it's going to cost you
00:52:14a point
00:52:14but there was a rumor
00:52:16about Tucker's
00:52:18right hand
00:52:18that he had injured
00:52:19his right hand
00:52:19and that's why
00:52:20he backed off training
00:52:21for the last few days
00:52:22that was three
00:52:23considered
00:52:23networks thrown
00:52:24by Tony Tucker
00:52:26you don't see that
00:52:27from a big man
00:52:28not in a heavyweight
00:52:30they don't throw
00:52:30those kind of punches
00:52:31he's punching
00:52:39Tucker's punching
00:52:40tying up
00:52:41here you go
00:52:42once again
00:52:47Tucker trying to get cute
00:52:50and again getting
00:52:51the worst of it
00:52:51and still mugging
00:52:52with Tyson
00:52:53which brings the crowd
00:52:54alive
00:52:54well when you do that
00:52:56and I know
00:52:56it's first
00:52:57because I invented it
00:52:58you've got to be very careful
00:52:59because you always
00:53:01you're so susceptible
00:53:03you're so vulnerable
00:53:04for
00:53:04I don't tell the part
00:53:05Larry we have to give
00:53:09Muhammad Ali
00:53:09a little credit
00:53:10for that tactic
00:53:11I don't think so
00:53:12just a little bit
00:53:14I think that's a sign
00:53:20of frustration
00:53:21that somehow
00:53:22he has been unable
00:53:24to get back
00:53:25what he had
00:53:26in the first three rounds
00:53:27of the fight
00:53:27winning a round
00:53:29is pretty easy
00:53:30but you can win them easy
00:53:31if you use your jab
00:53:32a little bit more
00:53:32and you gotta listen
00:53:33you gotta concentrate
00:53:34on getting inside
00:53:35and punching out
00:53:35and let him hold
00:53:37and let him hold
00:53:38don't say that
00:53:39don't say that
00:53:40don't even take that way
00:53:42give me that
00:53:44spit it out
00:53:46and swallow it
00:53:47now there you see
00:53:54he's pointing at him
00:53:56he's winding up
00:53:57and he's going to get
00:53:59hit by Tyson's jab
00:54:01talk about
00:54:02deflating somebody's balloon
00:54:04that seventh round
00:54:11with Tony Tucker
00:54:11being animated
00:54:12on his antics
00:54:13the key to that
00:54:14is the fact
00:54:15from a psychological standpoint
00:54:16with the fighters
00:54:17intimidating Miss Hagrid
00:54:18I mean I'm sorry
00:54:19Hagrid's on my mind now
00:54:20but Tyson
00:54:21it really affects
00:54:22a fighter
00:54:23especially when
00:54:24the champion
00:54:25can't get his punches off
00:54:27it worked for me
00:54:28and I'm sure
00:54:30Tucker
00:54:30thinks it's gonna work
00:54:31for him
00:54:31well it is a fact
00:54:34Tony Tucker
00:54:35has watched
00:54:36the tape
00:54:37of the Sugar Ray Leonard
00:54:38Marvin Hagrid fight
00:54:39on numerous occasions
00:54:40his father
00:54:40has kind of used that
00:54:41as a tool
00:54:43to get his charge going
00:54:45unfortunately it was only
00:54:56half
00:54:56half work
00:54:57but if you analyze it
00:54:58though
00:54:59actually he's doing what I did
00:55:00to have it
00:55:00he's going to punch a little bit
00:55:01he ties man up
00:55:03and get back on his bicycle
00:55:05now but you did that
00:55:06and made the punch count
00:55:07and he did that
00:55:08and got hit
00:55:08well the key is
00:55:09doing what you have to do
00:55:10and getting away from him
00:55:11not being stationary
00:55:13on the left hand
00:55:20okay I like that
00:55:22in Mike Tyson
00:55:23because he's doing
00:55:24a combination with him
00:55:25but whenever he throws
00:55:26he looks for one shot
00:55:27he's talking for a long
00:55:29long night
00:55:30in the middle of the last round
00:55:32we talked about the rumor
00:55:32of Tony Tucker's right hand
00:55:34and I've been watching him
00:55:35since that time
00:55:36I've not seen him
00:55:37throw the right hand
00:55:38in anger
00:55:38since the middle
00:55:39of the last round
00:55:40I hadn't noticed
00:55:40before that
00:55:41but let's see
00:55:42when he does
00:55:43throw that right hand
00:55:44or if he throws
00:55:44the right hand
00:55:45well in a fight
00:55:47of this intensity
00:55:47this magazine
00:55:48when you're fighting
00:55:49you really don't feel it
00:55:50because those drillers
00:55:51go
00:55:51and you don't feel the pain
00:55:53he did for a right uppercut
00:55:54there which missed
00:56:08Tucker once again
00:56:13time up
00:56:13Mike Tyson
00:56:14not allowing him to punch
00:56:17time
00:56:17time
00:56:18give me time
00:56:19tape on the glove
00:56:21of Mike Tyson
00:56:22they'll cut it off
00:56:23momentary time out
00:56:25that can make the world
00:56:26of a difference
00:56:26those few seconds
00:56:27those few seconds
00:56:28of getting the breath
00:56:29can make the world
00:56:30of a difference
00:56:31cut it
00:56:31alright
00:56:32cut it
00:56:33it doesn't seem like much
00:56:34but right here
00:56:36Tucker's being
00:56:37cooed off by his brother
00:56:38with ice peck on his neck
00:56:40ready
00:56:44alright here we go
00:56:47this is the 8th round
00:56:50we're scheduled for 12
00:56:51Mike Tyson seems
00:56:56to have gained
00:56:57control of the fight
00:56:58that right hand
00:57:04seems to have hurt
00:57:05Tucker
00:57:05his knee seems to
00:57:07buckle for 12 seconds
00:57:08right hand up
00:57:09on the top of the head
00:57:10when guys are committed
00:57:15it's very tough
00:57:16to see what
00:57:17to tell
00:57:18whether they're hurt
00:57:18or not
00:57:19that was the right hand
00:57:25by Tucker
00:57:26so
00:57:26alright let's get back
00:57:27come on
00:57:28let him go
00:57:28let him go
00:57:29Mike
00:57:29step back
00:57:30here we go
00:57:30time
00:57:30alright
00:57:31time to get a little
00:57:36mean
00:57:36time to get a little
00:57:37mean
00:57:38in that mouth
00:57:39please
00:57:39take a deep breath
00:57:40take a little deep breath
00:57:42deep breath
00:57:43deep breath
00:57:44and then let it out
00:57:44slow
00:57:44take another one more
00:57:45time to get a little
00:57:46meaner in here now
00:57:47open up
00:57:50get your foot off the
00:57:51rock
00:57:51spit that out
00:57:52spit that out
00:57:53spit that right out
00:57:54open up again
00:57:56there we go
00:57:57pain
00:57:57something
00:57:58close
00:57:58raise your hand
00:57:59keep it
00:58:00tied up
00:58:00and knocked
00:58:00all the time
00:58:01outside head
00:58:01box like you're
00:58:02doing
00:58:02thinking
00:58:02you're looking
00:58:03like a champion
00:58:03you're looking
00:58:04great
00:58:04you're looking
00:58:06frustrating
00:58:06oh
00:58:06okay
00:58:08you're hoping
00:58:09they can hit
00:58:10sneak punch with
00:58:11one good shot
00:58:12and hurt you
00:58:12now
00:58:13you gotta move
00:58:14your head a little
00:58:14bit more
00:58:14you're not moving
00:58:15enough
00:58:15move your head
00:58:15come in
00:58:16get in there
00:58:16punch out
00:58:17you're not
00:58:17punching out
00:58:17at all
00:58:18you're putting
00:58:18on mic around
00:58:19you gotta punch
00:58:19out
00:58:19you gotta think
00:58:20about that
00:58:20the question
00:58:29for an athlete
00:58:30like Mike Tyson
00:58:31isn't whether
00:58:32he's going to win
00:58:33but how he wins
00:58:34it's like a
00:58:35Sebastian Coe
00:58:36not whether he's
00:58:36going to win
00:58:37the mile race
00:58:37but what his time
00:58:39is
00:58:39so what we're
00:58:40going to watch
00:58:40from now on
00:58:41is really
00:58:42can he break
00:58:43down Tucker
00:58:44can he get
00:58:45him hurt
00:58:45can he stop
00:58:47him
00:58:47can he end
00:58:48in style
00:58:49Kevin Rooney
00:58:51and Tyson's
00:58:53cornstead
00:58:54to move
00:58:54the hair
00:58:55a little bit
00:58:55more
00:58:55you need to
00:58:56see more
00:58:57hair movement
00:58:57that graphic
00:58:58a minute ago
00:58:59saying 15 rounds
00:59:00as we mentioned
00:59:01we are of course
00:59:01as of yesterday
00:59:02going 12
00:59:03not 15
00:59:04you can hear
00:59:16Kevin Rooney
00:59:17yelling in the
00:59:17background
00:59:18get on him
00:59:18he said
00:59:19I wanted Tyson
00:59:20to move his head
00:59:21that's something
00:59:21where you pointed
00:59:22out about five
00:59:23rounds ago
00:59:23yes you have
00:59:24to move that
00:59:24head in order
00:59:25to get inside
00:59:25and not be
00:59:26so stationary
00:59:27because what
00:59:28was happening
00:59:29as Tyson
00:59:30bores in
00:59:31the uppercut
00:59:33he's very susceptible
00:59:34to be uppercut
00:59:35there's a right
00:59:37hand by Tucker
00:59:38that's back
00:59:39Tyson off
00:59:39get him up
00:59:44come on
00:59:46good body shot
00:59:50by Mike Tyson
00:59:51let him go
00:59:52let him go
00:59:52let him go
00:59:53there was a big
01:00:00left hand
01:00:00but again
01:00:01Tucker shakes
01:00:01his head
01:00:02I'm okay
01:00:02a lot of times
01:00:03one left hook
01:00:04of Tyson
01:00:05has landed
01:00:05because
01:00:06that's direction
01:00:07that Tony Tucker's
01:00:08movement
01:00:08it takes away
01:00:09the power
01:00:10of it
01:00:10takes off
01:00:11the leverage
01:00:11let him go
01:00:11let him go
01:00:12step back
01:00:13here we go
01:00:13come on
01:00:21make him go
01:00:21make him go
01:00:22fast with me
01:00:22come on
01:00:22kick
01:00:23fight free
01:00:23get to the side
01:00:31let him go
01:00:38let him go
01:00:39let him go
01:00:39let him go
01:00:40let him go
01:00:40let him go
01:00:41over here
01:00:41go here
01:00:42hold up
01:00:42I don't want to have to turn rise
01:00:43he's going to have to penalize you
01:00:58let him punch in some
01:00:59okay
01:00:59come on
01:00:59come on
01:01:00come on
01:01:00I don't want to have to penalize you
01:01:06let's do some punching
01:01:07thanks
01:01:11he's getting off quicker with his jab now
01:01:13this short strong
01:01:15fast left there
01:01:17of Mike Tyson
01:01:18now it appears
01:01:33the instinct for self-preservation
01:01:35has kicked in
01:01:36with Tucker
01:01:37more interested in defending himself
01:01:40than in attacking
01:01:41his opponent
01:01:43open up
01:01:44and all you got to do
01:01:46is throw your jab a little bit more
01:01:47with the punishment
01:01:48I haven't seen a 5-6 long night
01:01:49just put that out here
01:01:52here we go
01:01:53let me get in here Mike
01:01:54he's working on his love for you
01:01:56okay here comes the unofficial judge
01:02:05that's me
01:02:05I did score the 8th round
01:02:08even
01:02:08I have Tyson ahead
01:02:1088-84
01:02:11that means by 4 rounds
01:02:12and unless
01:02:14Tucker can put some real hurt on him
01:02:16he's lost the fight
01:02:18he has to knock him down
01:02:20or stop him
01:02:20he's breaking real
01:02:2110 seconds
01:02:21keep him out
01:02:22keep him out of the ground
01:02:23on my card
01:02:24you pretty much agree with that judgment of Larry Merchant right?
01:02:32I think it's a little closer than that
01:02:34but these last few rounds here are very very important
01:02:38again we talk about judges criteria
01:02:42how he's scoring the fight
01:02:43whether he's scoring the most effective punches
01:02:45or the percentage of punches that are landed
01:02:48well if in fact ring generalship
01:02:50is a key factor in judging a fight
01:02:53I really do believe that since about the 5th round
01:02:55Mike Tyson has been in charge of the fight
01:02:58he has been the aggressive
01:03:02Mike has not been able to land the kind of punches we've seen in the past
01:03:05and the reason for that is because of the way that Tony Tucker is approaching
01:03:09and has approached this fight
01:03:10alright
01:03:12let him tie you up
01:03:14ok let him go
01:03:14one step back please
01:03:15one other boy
01:03:15one other boy
01:03:16here we go
01:03:17time time time
01:03:26over here
01:03:27come here
01:03:27come here
01:03:28and now Mike Tyson
01:03:29look at his
01:03:30alright here we go
01:03:30come here come here
01:03:31come here come here
01:03:32rather than his hand
01:03:37Tony Tucker's right hand now is dropping
01:03:39and that is asking for Mike Tyson's left hook
01:03:44Tyson continually putting pressure on Tucker now
01:03:47come on
01:03:48watch that back
01:03:49get that head up
01:03:50watch that head
01:03:51see Mike can't get his left hook in
01:03:52because he's coming in first with his head
01:03:55he needs to throw a little short
01:03:57that short jab
01:03:58then step
01:03:59like that
01:04:00throw a jab
01:04:01then step in
01:04:02get close
01:04:03now come
01:04:04there it was
01:04:05that's what you have to do
01:04:06that's what he has to do brother
01:04:07this jab will get closer to the taller man Tucker
01:04:09and then he can throw his punches
01:04:10and then he can throw his punches
01:04:11once again though
01:04:12you see what's happening here
01:04:13then he gets in
01:04:15now he's starting to cut the ring off
01:04:18now he's not following Tucker
01:04:19now he's not following Tucker
01:04:20now he's just out again
01:04:22the jab once again is effective
01:04:35as effectively as I've seen Mike Tyson's jab
01:04:37his jab is awesome
01:04:39he gets it in but he has to use it more
01:04:41and work his way in
01:04:43and remember it's a different kind of jab
01:04:45it is a jab that is designed
01:04:47to get him inside to be able to throw the left hand
01:04:50the left hook that in
01:04:52not a jab that you use just to keep a man off of you
01:05:00Mike can't keep running with his chin like that
01:05:03not with the hand speed at Tony Tucker
01:05:05and then hide the Tony Tucker
01:05:08let him go
01:05:09let him go
01:05:10let him go
01:05:11let him go
01:05:12here we go
01:05:16I'm always expecting someone to go down
01:05:18because a lot of times
01:05:19both dogs are reaching in with their chins first
01:05:24Tyson was a little short with both that right and the left
01:05:27if this fight were a conversation
01:05:38Tucker starts it off with a few feeble words
01:05:42and Tyson finishes off each exchange
01:05:46with an exclamation point
01:05:48he's starting to really dominate the action now
01:05:51you have to go combinations
01:05:53I want to see five punch combinations
01:05:54he's going one punch at a time
01:05:55one punch at a time
01:05:56one punch at a time
01:05:57now we see that in that round
01:05:58Mike Tyson threw 22 jabs
01:06:00and landed 16
01:06:01and earlier when we showed you our punch stat
01:06:04before the fight
01:06:05showed that he had been throwing roughly 10 jabs
01:06:08and landing half or less of them
01:06:10so he's picked up using his jab
01:06:12he's settled down and he's just fighting
01:06:14he's not winging punches
01:06:16not getting caught in as many clinches
01:06:18as we've seen him before
01:06:19you've got two rounds to go
01:06:21you've got two rounds to go
01:06:22you're in good shape
01:06:23now get out there and fight this guy
01:06:24for the 14-minute punch speed
01:06:25all right
01:06:26try to get off first
01:06:27and then you're ready to grab a hole
01:06:28I'm ready to go
01:06:29I'm ready to go
01:06:30I'm ready to go
01:06:33Tucker needs to do something dramatic
01:06:35will he try?
01:06:37he looked a little bit like a tired fighter
01:06:39just looking at him in his corner
01:06:40between those rounds
01:06:41oh because he's never pointed at this pace
01:06:43but this is when you reach down bud
01:06:45this is when you show that you really really want to win
01:06:48this is when your body aches
01:06:50your legs clamp
01:06:51but you've got to push it
01:06:52you've got to push it to the limit
01:06:55and in Tyson's corner
01:06:56they told him we've got two rounds left
01:06:57fight for the full three minutes
01:06:59your arms aches
01:07:00he's starting to drop
01:07:01you know you have to bring him up
01:07:02because he knows somebody can throw a Conaway handle
01:07:05and again a timeout
01:07:08this time it is the tape on the glove of Tony Tucker
01:07:10the glove of Tony Tucker
01:07:11that comes loose
01:07:16again tightening his foot
01:07:18jab but get closer
01:07:19get inside
01:07:20he'll work his way inside
01:07:21that jab was going to get him closer
01:07:29Tucker holding a little bit more
01:07:31early here in the 11th round
01:07:32there's frustration in Mike's face
01:07:35and the reason is frustration is because of what
01:07:40something really panicked man up
01:07:42he'll go to an accident
01:07:43sometimes work
01:07:44you get the
01:07:47what you do
01:07:48you reverse the crowd's approval
01:07:57I mean he's fighting his fight
01:07:58he's doing his thing
01:07:59he doesn't care what people say on the books
01:08:02or writing the books
01:08:04well there's nothing else
01:08:05you've got to say
01:08:06Tony Tucker did
01:08:07fight
01:08:08Mike Tyson
01:08:09and there's been a lot of Tyson opponents
01:08:10that haven't done that
01:08:14good left hook by Mike Tyson
01:08:28again the voice you're hearing in the background
01:08:29is the voice of Kevin Rooney
01:08:31Mike Tyson
01:08:32saying come on
01:08:33you heard him
01:08:39I mean just check out Tony Tucker
01:08:41he's a mad conference
01:08:42alright alright
01:08:43let's get back
01:08:44let him go Tony
01:08:45let him go
01:08:46come on
01:08:47let him go
01:08:48come on
01:08:49come on
01:08:50come on
01:08:51let's do it
01:08:52there you go
01:08:58let him
01:08:59let him
01:09:00let him go
01:09:05come on
01:09:06let him go
01:09:07here we go
01:09:08come on
01:09:10come on
01:09:12come on
01:09:13Come on this box a little bit.
01:09:1520 foot grabbing.
01:09:17Come on, come on, let's go.
01:09:21Look at what happened.
01:09:23Some of them are boring.
01:09:25And while they're boring because they expected
01:09:27to be inevitable.
01:09:29It didn't happen for them.
01:09:31Tucker's fighting a great fight.
01:09:43Time.
01:09:49One round is huge.
01:09:51Too close.
01:09:53That's too close that round.
01:09:55Too close this couple.
01:10:01Take this one.
01:10:03Spit that out.
01:10:05Spit it out.
01:10:07Last round.
01:10:09Drink this.
01:10:11Last round.
01:10:13Last round, yeah.
01:10:15Use it there.
01:10:17Final combination.
01:10:19Don't let him get in an open.
01:10:21It's a crucial round here.
01:10:23Breathe so close.
01:10:25Stay on.
01:10:27They think they got a shot.
01:10:29I don't know.
01:10:31You understand?
01:10:33Get out there.
01:10:35Get out there.
01:10:37Get out there.
01:10:39Mike Tyson is one round away from becoming a unified heavyweight champion at the age of 21.
01:10:49This obviously won't be a dramatic victory unless he does something dramatic here.
01:10:55But it has been a good workmanlike job.
01:10:57It's an effective victory.
01:10:59It's interesting to hear Kevin Rooney in the corner saying,
01:11:01With these judges, you never know.
01:11:03You've got to go out there and win this round big.
01:11:05So Rooney just being a realist.
01:11:07I have to say something, bro.
01:11:09You know when I talk about one of the titles against Russell Douglas,
01:11:11I felt that he needed more experience to deal with Mike Tyson.
01:11:15If he wasn't strong enough, he'll have the experience to deal with Mike Tyson.
01:11:17I say, it's probably a blowout.
01:11:19But he said, so what with these so-called experts.
01:11:21I'm going to show you.
01:11:23And this is what he did tonight.
01:11:25And he has.
01:11:26Even if he loses the fight, he's probably made more friends than he has in the 34 wins that he's had.
01:11:29Friends and believers.
01:11:31You have to take your head off to the guy.
01:11:35I mean, he's in there with a monster in Mike Tyson.
01:11:39Who has fought a good fight tonight.
01:11:40Yes, he has.
01:11:41I mean, Mike Tyson has done the best job he could possibly do against a guy as mobile,
01:11:47hand speed, height, and reach advantage.
01:11:50Look at it!
01:11:52And a guy who wasn't in there just to survive, either.
01:11:54Come on, come on, come on, come on.
01:11:56Come on, come on.
01:11:57Come on, come on.
01:11:58Come on, come on.
01:11:59Come on.
01:12:00Come on!
01:12:02Come on!
01:12:03Watch out!
01:12:04Watch out!
01:12:06Alright, well, sit back, Mike.
01:12:07I have this one.
01:12:08Here we go.
01:12:09Tony Tucker, as Larry Merchant is always fond of saying,
01:12:10he had the big hat and while he, maybe he didn't have all the cattle,
01:12:12at least he had a couple of cows.
01:12:19A right hand just barely grazed the chin of Tony Tucker.
01:12:24Come on!
01:12:26Come on!
01:12:27The crowd is getting a little tired of that.
01:12:34Tucker seems to be fighting the kind of fight that he thinks is winning.
01:12:42Here we go, here we go, here we go.
01:12:52That was a big left hand.
01:13:03Tucker says, no, no, no, no, I'm all right, I'm all right.
01:13:09Tyson finishing with a flourish.
01:13:24And so is Tucker. Great finish.
01:13:30Still a pretty entertaining evening.
01:13:45It's over.
01:13:46Well, Tony Tucker talked the talk and walked the walk.
01:13:50He fought him.
01:13:52And he was a better fighter than most of us knew that he was.
01:13:57There's an old saying in boxing, you never know how good an unbeaten fighter is.
01:14:01And an unbeaten fighter is hard to beat because he doesn't know that he can be beat.
01:14:05And that's how Tucker fought tonight.
01:14:10This seems of a friendly nature.
01:14:25Honey Tucker, very religious man.
01:14:31and we await the decision and we have seen some and here's my card which we will put up in a
01:14:41moment i have tyson winning clearly in terms of rounds it comes out eight three and one
01:14:47the impressive thing to me is that tyson was really rocked in the first round
01:14:53he took the punch he gathered himself and after a few rounds of uncertainty
01:14:59just went after it as a fight and let it happen
01:15:02so if you had to capsulize the kind of fight larry that mike tyson fought tonight what would you say
01:15:09if you had to capsulize you had a problem larry's headset i should say you had to capsulize the
01:15:17kind of fight that mike tyson fought tonight what would you say workman like a good solid job
01:15:22against the guy who was there uh and didn't let him land a lot of big punches i think
01:15:28for a guy who fought him back he fought him back in a way that didn't expose himself to a lot of big
01:15:36punches which everybody else has gotten from tyson and tyson is not a one punch puncher he's a cumulative
01:15:41puncher all right we'll get the official decision now as we go out for the ring announcer chuck hall
01:15:47ladies and gentlemen here is the decision of the judges we have a unanimous decision
01:15:58judge phil newman scores 119 111
01:16:06judge julio roldon scores 118 113 and judge bill graham scores 116 112 for the winner by unanimous
01:16:24decision and undisputed heavyweight champion of the world iron mike tyson
01:16:32so mike tyson not surprisingly the unanimous decision winner over tony tucker
01:16:41tony tucker said when we talked to him the other day he always referred to himself as the invisible
01:16:50champion he'd say i'd have a fight a couple days later somebody he'd run into would say
01:16:54are you still fighting i don't think he's going to have to answer that question anymore
01:16:57in a losing effort as we said he probably won more fans than he's had
01:17:04in the 34 fights previous right now let's get up to larry merchant who is with mike tyson larry
01:17:09okay mike undisputed heavyweight champion are you happy with the way you fought tonight
01:17:16not really because i was trying my best to punch his side but i guess it wasn't together today
01:17:21and he was very intimidated and it was very tough was he better fighter than you thought
01:17:24it was very hard to tell because he did a great deal of holdings he do very fast punches
01:17:29it was true and he really rocked you in the first round yes he did he was very hard puncher
01:17:34how did you gather yourself together after that punch what did that punch mean after it hit me
01:17:40it was history he went away did you did it in any way intimidate you in the sense that give you
01:17:46respect for him that he might hurt you not at all not at all it seemed that after a round
01:17:51several rounds that that you decided to stand down and not try to wing a lot of punches and just
01:17:59fight him and let happen what was going to happen well i was thinking that he because he was very
01:18:03intimidated and he was freezing every once in a while and i would think i would get him with a
01:18:06good right hand we want to take a look at that punch in the first round and i'd like you to describe
01:18:11it and just what happened because you can see out there the bad mistakes like don curry did
01:18:18um come right up in the middle after i went down instead of going to the side and he threw a punch
01:18:24and i was careless and i got hit it seemed that he had came out into this fight with the strategy of
01:18:31trying to come underneath you as you came in well after he did the first time there was no way he's
01:18:35going to make this give me the same mistake again what are your plans now everybody wants to know
01:18:42are you going to fight michael spinks well i don't know really you have to talk to jim jacob right here
01:18:46what are your thoughts about fighting michael spinks yourself whether it's next time or two
01:18:51years from now i fight whoever my manager wants me to fight you know i'm just a fighter
01:18:55i do what he told me to do you're not as happy as one would think you would be for being the
01:19:01undisputed heavyweight champion of the world right because you know as long as you make mistakes
01:19:05you have no means to be happy i'm a perfectionist i want to be perfect and i was trying to use my jab
01:19:10more and i was just a little confused that he's holding a lot but i was i stopped being frustrated
01:19:16and i just continued jabbing most of the round let's take a look at what happened in the last
01:19:20round when he came out in some desperation and started to throw big punches again describe what
01:19:26you see what was all this jiving and well antics he was he was a little intimidating to try to
01:19:32make me think that he was fresh and he was ready to go when he was not tired i wasn't affected him
01:19:37but look as soon as i come and he grabs me
01:19:40mike congratulations
01:19:44undisputed champion 21 years old do you feel now that you're the undisputed champion that that really
01:19:52is more meaningful than the other championships in terms of history i knew i would have you
01:19:56the younger payway champion i want to be burton thank you very much okay mike thank you and back
01:20:02to you barry and ray okay thanks very much larry merchant and mike tyson ray i asked larry merchant how
01:20:07he would evaluate mike tyson's performance let me ask you not only how you would evaluate mike
01:20:10tyson's performance but how you would evaluate tony tucker's performance i mean i think words can
01:20:16not really describe what i feel about tony tucker i think what he displayed tonight was the fact that
01:20:21he was a non-conformist he did what a lot of us didn't think he could do and that's why i respect
01:20:25the man so much because he he boxed he clinched he fought a very strategic a very tactical a very
01:20:30intelligent fight i had a feeling that he tried to borrow a page from the ray leonard playbook when we
01:20:34talked to him just the other day we talked about the fact that he watched your fight a lot you
01:20:38talked to him a great deal about what you had to do to win and it seems like he heeded that advice
01:20:42you know and i saw that in the makings as the rounds were progress because i was saying that the key to
01:20:47winning is the frustration to tie your man up to break his rhythm and throw your punches and win that
01:20:51round at the end of each one let's take a look then at some of the final numbers from our punch stat
01:20:56statistics and there they are tyson throwing 412 punches ironically it was tony tucker who threw 452 but
01:21:02tyson's punches were more effective and i think probably the most important thing about this is
01:21:07that tony tite of mike tyson rather actually out jabbed tony tucker particularly so over the final few
01:21:14rounds now tucker of course came into this fight with a reputation as the boxer and tyson as the puncher
01:21:19but it was tyson who did the jabbing and did so effectively enough to get inside and win a unanimous
01:21:24decision let's get back to the center of the ring now and larry merchant larry tony you fought a lot
01:21:30better fight than many people thought you were capable of you really hurt him early in the first
01:21:37round what happened after that why couldn't you follow up on it oh well you know it wasn't no
01:21:43secret in the game early in the training i hurt my right hand and um it would give me some problems
01:21:50after the second round when i hit him but i thought i still outboxed him i was moving good
01:21:56um mike tyson is a young kid he's uh he's what everybody you know everybody came here expecting
01:22:05to win the odds was you know in his favor you know if it was a close fight i figured they was going to
01:22:13give it to him anyway you know but i still thought i beat i beat him but that's okay you know the world
01:22:18know tony chuck is here i'm for real and uh you know i praise god you know because he seen me
01:22:24through the fight and and he protected me and um neither one of us you know got hurt injured i mean
01:22:30so where we couldn't continue but uh i still praise god now and i'm happy you know that i'm here
01:22:36but you know you were here you made us notice you thank you tony yeah and now a few few words to sum up
01:22:45i'd have to say that at this moment the heavyweight division is probably in better
01:22:50shape than it's been in some time we have a unified champion and we have a challenger that
01:22:55everybody wants to see against that unified champion michael spinks when will a michael spinks
01:23:02and mike tyson fight come off well i wouldn't want to hold my breath if michael spinks could
01:23:09make a business decision not to fight tyson in this tournament or not to fight tucker for his
01:23:16share of the championship then i suppose mike tyson can make a business decision on when he as the
01:23:23undisputed champion wants to fight this man there are a number of reasons why the fight won't be held
01:23:28right away one of them obviously is there's a lot of bad blood between the camps because there was a
01:23:33contract that the tyson camp feels wasn't honored secondly they feel they can remain active and make
01:23:39a lot of money the tyson people and who can spinks fight and where can he make a lot of money
01:23:44and if their man is active and the other guy is not active that's all to their good and finally third
01:23:51the longer we wait the bigger the build-up will be toward an eventual fight between the undisputed
01:23:58champion and the undisputed challenger as it were and now i'd like to make a personal note here
01:24:05in the early 30s a real fight fan was courting a beautiful young lady and part of the courtship
01:24:13ritual was to take her to the fight every single week and 50 years ago tonight they were married
01:24:19and after that marriage she never went to another fight again which just shows to go you about how the
01:24:28price fight business is the subterfuges people will go through to get to the top i had to be at this
01:24:35party i'm glad i was at this party although i would rather have been at their golden wedding anniversary
01:24:40party in hartford connecticut i want to send my love and congratulations to my in-laws
01:24:45jerry and irving stiss now back to you barry and ray okay thanks let's address the spinks tyson
01:24:54eventuality and ray let me put you inside the head if i can of both michael spinks and mike tyson let's
01:24:59forget for a minute about the jimmy jacobs and the butch lewis and all the politics and all the legal
01:25:04affairs do you think these two guys really want to get at it and just get it on as soon as possible
01:25:08or whether rather just respect each other's respective titles if you will even though spinks
01:25:13really doesn't have one and just wait a little bit you know barry at this point now i think it's
01:25:16it's actually public demand i think the public wants to see michael spinks and mike tyson go at it
01:25:21is that inevitable confrontation where there's two good fighters two great fighters
01:25:25uh about to match i think it's like two meteors about to collide it happened with her and i
01:25:30robert duran and i and marvin haggler and i so it's got to happen it should happen sooner or later but
01:25:36in this case it appears it's going to be later you know the one question that i have about this fight
01:25:39and i really wonder what would have happened with mike tyson if he'd have fought tony tucker let's say
01:25:44six or seven fights ago might have been very very different well we want to remind you to stay tuned
01:25:50immediately following hbo's world championship boxing we're going to have a most interesting
01:25:53movie for you but we'll tell you about training camps and they that they are open for business
01:25:58in the national football league and what that means is of course that we're gearing up for inside the
01:26:02nfl with host lendo dawson and nick bonacani it premieres each thursday beginning with the kickoff
01:26:07of the regular season in september right through super bowl 22 so for larry merchant and sugar ray

01:26:33the associate producer was david harman the assistant to the producer brian a mcdonald
01:26:38and the production managers judy trost and so long to angela mancuso
01:26:43don't ask me where i'm going
01:26:45i don't know
01:26:48don't ask me where i'm going
