00:00:00They say my legs ain't what they used to be.
00:00:10Now he's showing his style.
00:00:12He's copied everything from Ali.
00:00:14Great legs.
00:00:16They said at one time when someone knocked me down.
00:00:27Then I get up and finish him off.
00:00:29Like a champion.
00:00:38They didn't think I could be Jerry Cooney in 82.
00:00:48Now they say I'm old and I'm gonna lose.
00:00:50But tonight I will knock out everything.
00:00:53So Larry Holmes journeys back to the city where seven years ago
00:00:56he was anointed heavyweight champion.
00:00:59But tonight a hungry young challenger threatens to put an end
00:01:02to the heavyweight era of Larry Holmes.

00:01:48HBO Sports presents World Championship Boxing.
00:01:52The main event, IBF heavyweight champion Larry Holmes
00:01:55defends his title against David Bay, scheduled for 15 rounds.
00:02:00Once again, we're outdoors in the desert where fight fans eagerly await
00:02:04the latest chapter in the undefeated career of Larry Holmes.
00:02:08As always, an electricity in the air as this crowd anticipates
00:02:12the conceivability of an aging champion finally meeting his match.
00:02:18Hello, everybody. I'm Barry Tompkins, and welcome to the Riviera Hotel here in Las Vegas.
00:02:22This, of course, the scene of the last defense of the heavyweight championship for Larry Holmes.
00:02:27Tonight, the word last takes on an added significance, as this, he says, will be his last.
00:02:33We'll see.
00:02:34Joining us for expert commentary, the champ, Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:02:37Ray, you've been in that position before. You talk about retirement.
00:02:39What does it do the night of the fight when you know that's in the back of your head?
00:02:43Well, Barry, there's been so much written about Larry Holmes contemplating in his career
00:02:46at this fight with David Bay tonight.
00:02:49But through my conversation with him, I actually feel he's gearing himself towards retirement.
00:02:53His performance tonight will play a significant role as far as in his career,
00:02:57although breaking Rocky Mountain's 49-0 record comes to mind.
00:03:02Got to be in the back of his mind.
00:03:03Well, of course, no HBO fight would be complete without our own sage Larry Merchant.
00:03:06And, Larry, you and I always seem to sit here and talk at this time
00:03:09about the possibility of the challenger beating the champion.
00:03:12Let's talk about David Bay tonight.
00:03:15I think he has a real chance.
00:03:17I think he has a real chance because over the last few years,
00:03:20Larry Holmes has fought only two big, strong guys who have fought back,
00:03:25Bonecrusher Smith and Tim Witherspoon, and both of them gave him trouble.
00:03:30At this stage of Holmes' career, he wants to face an opponent who will come to him.
00:03:35He won't have to chase David Bay.
00:03:37The problem is, if you don't stop a steamroller before it begins to roll, it may roll over you.
00:03:44That's another way of saying, I think that Larry Holmes has to hurt or stop David Bay early,
00:03:51otherwise his crown is in real jeopardy.
00:03:54Interesting phenomena going on, I think, as involves Larry Holmes,
00:03:57and that is that everybody sits and waits for the demise of Larry Holmes.
00:04:01That's probably the most significant thing about it.
00:04:03They wait, and they wait, and they wait.
00:04:06And when last seen, they were still waiting.
00:04:10I don't foresee myself going too far into 1982,
00:04:15and this year might be my last year,
00:04:18but we're not going to stay in boxing and lose everything we work.
00:04:22On June 11th, and then I can say, if I want to get out of the game, I can get out.
00:04:27But I predict, in my life, in my career, the rest of my career in boxing, I will retire.
00:04:32I got what I want.
00:04:35I need one more fight to finish doing what I'm doing,
00:04:37and I can be able to say, hey, that's it.
00:04:401983 will be my last year of boxing.
00:04:42And I want to be on HBO.
00:04:45I want to tell them my desire is to take one or two more fights
00:04:49for whatever I feel like I'm doing and get on out of the boxing game.
00:04:53If the price is right, they can get a fight.
00:04:55The public doesn't believe a fighter when he says, I'm going to retire.
00:05:00Why should they believe Larry Holmes?
00:05:04I found out from a recent experience when it's time to call it quits.
00:05:08The question comes up always, when should a boxer retire?
00:05:11Fighters ask themselves that question many times during their career.
00:05:14And now, at the age of 35, Larry Holmes is about to make that simple, yet most important decision.
00:05:22Let's journey back to 1978.
00:05:24A young Larry Holmes decision heavyweight champion, Ken Norton.
00:05:27This has been a great boxing show.
00:05:29Both fighters can raise it.
00:05:30As Holmes comes back, scores a goal.
00:05:33He gets under trouble.
00:05:36Yes.
00:05:37Last November, James Bond comes to Smith.
00:05:40Holmes now has to brawl with Smith.
00:05:44So now it is Holmes who is fighting Smith's fight.
00:05:46There was a right hand.
00:05:47That hurt Holmes.
00:05:49Can you see a difference between the Larry Holmes that fought Ken Norton in 1978
00:05:54and the Larry Holmes that fought Bonecrusher Smith in 84?
00:05:58Yes, I can see a difference.
00:05:59I think I'm a better fighter now than I were when I fought Ken Norton.
00:06:03I'm a young 35.
00:06:05I haven't taken a lot of beating, punches and whatnot.
00:06:08Last fight, I got cut for the first time with a headbutt, and I had a year layoff.
00:06:14So I felt that I fought a better fight than I really expected.
00:06:17I was trying to build my confidence to say, hey, I'm going to be all right.
00:06:22But I knew that rest will set in because of my age factor.
00:06:26Larry, publicly, at least you said, this is your last fight.
00:06:29But one reporter from the New York Daily News said you called Butch Lewis after the Spinks series fight,
00:06:35discussing a possible fight with the light heavyweight champion.
00:06:38Are you having second thoughts?
00:06:39I felt that Butch Lewis wants me to fight Michael Spinks.
00:06:43He was trying to make that fight before.
00:06:44But I don't feel that he's a qualified promoter to put up the dollars that I would want to fight Michael Spinks.
00:06:51And I did say that I would retire.
00:06:54But, you know, again, you know, money changes a lot of people's minds.
00:06:57But if the price is not met that I want, then I will retire.
00:07:02Retirement.
00:07:03One word that has plagued champions and contenders since the turn of the century.
00:07:08Nowhere is it more controversial than the heavyweight divisions.
00:07:11Three names come to mind.
00:07:13Muhammad Ali, Rocky Marciano, and the great Joe Lewis.
00:07:17Well, I'd like to say again that I'll retire tonight with my last fight.
00:07:22Thank you very much.
00:07:24Then, two years later, huge debts to the U.S. government forced Joe Lewis back in the ring.
00:07:30He took a $300,000 guarantee to fight Rocky Marciano to help pay back the million dollars he owed in unpaid taxes.
00:07:38The glorious career of Joe Lewis, a champion loved by millions, ended on a sour note.
00:07:43On the other hand, Rocky Marciano went on to win the heavyweight title.
00:07:48After 49 victories without a loss and $4 million in ring earnings, Rocky walked away at the age of 32.
00:07:55I would like to announce my retirement from boxing at this time.
00:08:01And then, of course, there is a story of the greatest.
00:08:04Muhammad Ali came out of retirement in 1980 to challenge, of all people, a former sparring partner by the name of Larry Holmes.
00:08:11Well, you don't want to destroy a legend.
00:08:14You know, Muhammad Ali was a legend in my time, and he was my friend.
00:08:18And later on, I went to his room, and we joked about it.
00:08:22And I told my friend, man, I love you.
00:08:24He said, if you love me, why did you whoop me like that there?
00:08:28Whether for pride, ego, or just to be in the public eye, Ali could not take the inactivity out of the ring.
00:08:33It's been said, Larry, that Ali stayed around too long, that he couldn't deal with out the limelight.
00:08:40I found it tough to adjust to life without boxing sometimes.
00:08:43I'm content now, but what's going to happen with Larry Holmes once he retired?
00:08:48Well, I got other things to keep my mind occupied.
00:08:51And what helped me out a lot, Ray, and what's helping me now is living in eastern Pennsylvania.
00:08:55It's a town that is small, that has not a whole lot of activity, not a lot of excitement there.
00:09:00And it will help me adjust.
00:09:02And if I want excitement, I can go see Ray Leonard in Maryland.
00:09:06I can go to New York and do the disco.
00:09:08Now that the time is right
00:09:13Time is on my side
00:09:22Now that the band is good
00:09:30Let's hit the road
00:09:36Get on the road
00:09:38Larry, they're all saying that you're ready to be taken.
00:09:44They say you're not the same fighter you were years ago.
00:09:46Your fans, they love you.
00:09:48They're almost pleading for you to retire undefeated.
00:09:51Is there added pressure?
00:09:52I feel the two things, Ray.
00:09:53I feel that people want me to retire because they don't want me to break the record of Marciano.
00:09:57They feel that it's been there a long time.
00:10:00People want me to retire because they don't want to give me the credit that I probably deserve.
00:10:06That's been one of the great fighters of all time.
00:10:08That doesn't bother me, Ray.
00:10:10I just want to be able to do it as long as I want to do it.
00:10:14And when I don't have that desire to do it anymore, to quit.
00:10:17No one knows what's in store for Larry Holmes.
00:10:20Fighters retire for a lot of reasons.
00:10:23For me personally, I retire because I lack concentration and fire to continue.
00:10:28As for Larry Holmes, Father Time is knocking at his door, waiting for an answer.
00:10:33What's going to happen?
00:10:34Well, we don't know.
00:10:35But one thing is for sure, Larry Holmes and only Larry Holmes will make that final decision.
00:10:41Right, champ?
00:10:41We'll score another knockout, Ray.
00:10:43We'll score another knockout, Ray.
00:11:13Just about every fight that we have.
00:11:14And to put things in perspective, here's our own Larry Merchant.
00:11:17Larry?
00:11:18Larry Holmes is an overwhelming favorite to win tonight.
00:11:22He is so because he's answered every test of skill and will over a brilliant career.
00:11:28And yet there are respected boxing authorities, sensing that at 35 he is vulnerable,
00:11:34who are picking him to lose tonight.
00:11:36They think David Bay is the kind of fighter who can exploit an old fighter.
00:11:42David Bay is not only the kind of fighter, but the kind of person.
00:11:46He's dangerous because he's younger and hungrier, because he's bigger and stronger,
00:11:51and because he's very determined and very tough.
00:11:55Tex Cobb says he's not afraid of anyone, living or dead.
00:11:58The first time we saw David Bay at HBO, he was a 290-pound amateur.
00:12:05He's worked off 50 pounds to get here.
00:12:08That kind of dedication comes from his neighborhood and his genes.
00:12:12This is the story of a boxer.
00:12:19A boxer who became one because of his mother.
00:12:22A boxer whose achievements he credits to his father.
00:12:28This is a story about David Bay.
00:12:31In 1954, Joseph Bay married Esther Proctor.
00:12:35They settled in an area of Philadelphia called Nicetown
00:12:38and began what they hoped would be your typical American family.
00:12:41But in the eyes of others, it was not so typical.
00:12:45My mother had to go through a lot of, you know, she had a lot of problems back then,
00:12:50I guess, because for her marrying a black man.
00:12:52And, you know, she had to stand strong just to keep us.
00:12:55I mean, you know, everybody probably turned their back on us.
00:12:57I mean, we used to walk down the street and people used to say,
00:12:59who's that white woman with them black kids?
00:13:00And my mother used to turn around and talk about they're mine.
00:13:03Later, it would be evident that the pride Esther Bay exhibited to her children
00:13:07would one day prove to be very influential in their lives.
00:13:11When the children grew up, they all had to stick together.
00:13:15It was a thing of survival.
00:13:17You know, they got it from both sides.
00:13:20The whites criticized them.
00:13:21The blacks criticized them.
00:13:23It seemed like everybody thought they were wrong.
00:13:26When David was small, at first he didn't like to fight.
00:13:28He was very peace-loving.
00:13:29But then, because he was interracial, he was picked on by the white children in the school and the blacks.
00:13:36So then he started to defend himself.
00:13:38Like, they would pick on him and taunt him and call him different names.
00:13:41You know, half-breed and this and that, hunky and all.
00:13:43You know, different things they would call him.
00:13:45It all depends on who was doing the calling.
00:13:47So eventually he had to fight back.
00:13:49So after he learned how to fight and defend himself, they stopped it.
00:13:52And I think that's when he really began to become a boxer.
00:13:56If David's boxing career can be attributed to his mother, his father is certainly responsible for how he would fight.
00:14:03During World War II, Joseph Bay was an army boxer, a sparring partner for Joe Lewis.
00:14:08After the war, Joseph worked 38 years as a pile driver.
00:14:12Three years ago, he died of a heart attack.
00:14:14But the lessons he preached to his children continue to live on.
00:14:18His philosophy was simple.
00:14:19Always work hard.
00:14:21To me, he was a black John Wayne.
00:14:24He was a superman.
00:14:26He was my hero.
00:14:28When David's father died, he, you know, he just really couldn't believe he died.
00:14:33And the day that his father was buried, David had a fight that day in Atlantic City.
00:14:37And he had to leave before he was buried.
00:14:39But he went to Atlantic City and he won the fight.
00:14:41And it seemed like, after that, he was very determined.
00:14:46The path that David Bay would follow in life would be one paved by his father.
00:14:51When he was 17, David joined the army.
00:14:54And like Joseph, became a boxer.
00:14:57For six years, he was stationed in Germany, serving as a combat engineer involved with the disarming of landmines.
00:15:04The path continued in 1979, when David became a member of the same pile driver's union, Local 454.
00:15:12Two years later, he turned professional, this time fighting for a different reason.
00:15:17His father.
00:15:18And he did a damn good job raising 10 kids in the ghetto.
00:15:22Where the money he was making in the week, and plus going through all the other things he had to take care of.
00:15:26He was good. He was a good man.
00:15:29Good man. To me, he's a legend.
00:15:31He should be in the history book.
00:15:32Well, since he can't be in the history book, I'm going to the history book for him, and I'm going to be part of him.
00:15:37Joseph Bay would be proud of his hardworking son, David, who's more than followed in his footsteps.
00:15:42While Esther Bay can now walk the streets of Nicetown without criticism.
00:15:46My mother and father made me the way, made me what I am today.
00:15:50My father's strength and courage, and my mother's pride.
00:15:54You know, if it wasn't for my mother and my father, I wouldn't be the way I am today.
00:15:58My mother's pride, what pride would carry me, because my mother had to go through a lot just to take care of us.
00:16:03And my father, I wish my father was still here to see it, but maybe it was meant for him to leave here, to make me get stronger, to go on.
00:16:09But my father and mother, I love them both. I love them both.
00:16:12Well, it's been a long road to this place, the Strip in Las Vegas.
00:16:18We await the 15-round heavyweight championship fight between Larry Holmes, the champion.
00:16:22Will it be his last? And David Bay, who wants it for his mother and his deceased father.
00:16:27Mom, incidentally, is still back in Nicetown.
00:16:29Like Rocky Marciano's mother, she will not watch her son fight.
00:16:33Right now, let's go up to the ring announcer, Chuck Hall, for the introduction of our national anthem.
00:16:36Chuck?
00:16:38Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me a great deal of pleasure to introduce these two talented,
00:16:42young people standing at my side, Janet and Jermaine Jackson.
00:16:47And now it gives me a great honor to turn the microphone over to Jermaine Jackson
00:16:51for the rendition of our national anthem.
00:16:54God bless America.
00:17:20Land that I love, stand beside her, and guide her, through the night with a light from above.
00:17:41From the mountains, to the prairie, to the ocean, to fight with hope.
00:17:55God bless America.
00:17:57God bless America.
00:18:01My home sweet home.
00:18:09God bless America.
00:18:15My home sweet home.
00:18:21God bless America.
00:18:23God bless America.
00:18:25God bless America.
00:18:26God bless America.
00:18:29God bless America.
00:18:31Land that I love, stand beside her, and guide her, through the night with a light
00:18:39from above.
00:18:41And guide her through the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans, right before.
00:19:06God bless, God bless America, my home sweet home.
00:19:18God bless America, my home sweet home.
00:19:35God bless America, my home sweet home.
00:19:47And so Jermaine Jackson has set the scene with a stirring lip sync of God bless America. And now David Bay starts to make his way into the ring. His first heavyweight title fight, of course. And Bay says he's in peak form. He says flatly, I want to beat the man. I'm in better shape than he is. I'm going to knock him out.
00:20:17Dreamed about knocking him out in three rounds. Dreamed about knocking him out in one round. And he says, maybe I'll knock him out in 14.
00:20:22And here is David Bay's record. Just 14 fights. But I think that that is a little bit misleading.
00:20:32First of all, his last fight, he ran right over a world class heavyweight who is now the WBA champion, Greg Page. Secondly, he had a long and distinguished amateur career. The equivalent perhaps of 10 or a dozen four and six round fights that other heavyweights in the past have had. So he could easily be 25 and 0. He's a big, tough guy. And he could give Larry Holmes all the problems he wants.
00:20:59Well, I'll tell you right later, there are a lot of people around this fight. More so than any championship fight I've ever seen. When you ask, do you give the challenger a chance? They might say, well, if this, if that, if the other thing. More people that I've talked to in the last couple of days have said, yes, flat on. I think this guy's going to win the fight.
00:21:15Well, that's the anticipation, right? Because they think that this is the time for Larry Holmes to be taken, especially by a big guy like David Bay. One thing about it also, Larry Holmes knows what people are talking about.
00:21:26But when you look, if in fact, styles make fights, you have to look at David Bay and say he's made the order for Larry Holmes.
00:21:34And there are the career records of some of the great champions. Rocky Marciano, of course, 49 and 0. And Larry Holmes, well, we've said it. He would like somewhere in his heart to best the record of Rocky Marciano.
00:21:45Joe Lewis, of course, with just the three losses and two of them coming at the tail end of his career. And Muhammad Ali, 56 and 5. So Larry Holmes right up amongst the greats.
00:21:55Meanwhile, David Bay just trying to stay warm in there. And this, of course, is an old game now because Larry Holmes very likely will make him stand around and wait a little bit.
00:22:05Well, the nerves are jumping inside of David Bay and Larry Holmes is playing that game. Most of the time it works, Barry.
00:22:10We should point out that right now it is about 22 minutes after 7 here in Nevada. And Larry Holmes was not in his locker room until sometime around 6.30. Now, that's something of a surprise.
00:22:22Well, normally a fighter gets to adjust from at least two hours prior to the bout. There had to be a legitimate reason, a logical reason, rather, why Larry Holmes wasn't there.
00:22:32Larry Merchant, you've made it clear that you do give David Bay a very honest chance to win this fight. You talked a little bit about some of the whys, but let's elaborate on that just a little bit more.
00:22:41Well, I think the main issue for David Bay is can he take a punch because he's going to get punched, particularly early in the fight.
00:22:49He is a wide-swinging fighter, and Larry Holmes is about as straight shooting a fighter as you've ever seen with a straight jab and right hand.
00:22:57And so the matchup obviously favors Holmes in that regard. But Holmes hasn't really hurt the big guys. It's been said that he's fighting an elephant without an elephant gun.
00:23:07And if he can take those punches early, then I think we've got something here.
00:23:11David Bay does have a lot of crowd support. As you can see, the Piledrivers Union, Local 454. That, of course, is David Bay's union. He says, I'll never give up that union card.
00:23:19He's a pile-driving man.
00:23:21That's right, like John Henry, right? David Bay, of course, with a lot of amateur experience. As you can see, 49-4 and 42 first-round knockouts. He doesn't fool around.
00:23:30You know, Barrett, a point to bring out is the fact that the handicap that David Bay has is the fact that he cuts easy.
00:23:35And with Larry Holmes' jab, if it's consistent and accurate, it's going to create a lot of problems for David Bay.
00:23:41Interesting point about that, something we had just heard before this fight, that since David Bay's last fight in November, he has been soaking his face in salt water.
00:23:49And that, allegedly, will toughen the skin. Do you buy it? Well, I tell you, when I came back to resume my career, I used some type of solution, salt solution.
00:23:57It didn't help me at all.
00:23:59And so whether or not it helps David Bay remains to be seen. He had three cuts in his last fight against Greg Page.
00:24:04We should point out, he won the fight. And Page, subsequent to that, of course, went on and won a heavyweight championship of his own.
00:24:10And so that will either tell us, really, how good David Bay is or how not so good Greg Page is.
00:24:16And here comes the champion, Larry Holmes. He seems to be all business. This will be his 18th title defense.
00:24:21He is still undefeated, pretty much unmarked, although he did have a very serious cut, the result of a butt, really, against James Boat, Crusher Smith.
00:24:29And there is still some scarves issue there.
00:24:31Well, Larry Holmes also stated that he's not concerned about breaking Rocky Monciano's record, which I think he should do there.
00:24:37A great accomplishment. He has come on, come in rather, a little bit heavier than usual.
00:24:43In fact, this is the second heaviest he has ever been for a heavyweight championship fight.
00:24:47Larry Holmes now will see just how mobile he is once we get going.
00:24:50Now, he doesn't feel he's going to have to be that mobile against this guy.
00:24:54Well, that's still Larry Holmes in training, and that left jab looked very good to me.
00:25:03And here's Larry Holmes' record.
00:25:05It's a remarkable record.
00:25:08He's overcome being knocked down in other adversity, fighting hurt, sometimes fighting sick.
00:25:14But all the excuses he's had have come after victories, not after defeats.
00:25:18And that's what separates a great, stable champion from those guys who come and go.
00:25:25He always seems to be fighting for his reputation, fighting for his place in boxing history, right?
00:25:30Do you feel in his own mind he's arrived at that now?
00:25:32Well, I'm sure. Larry Holmes is established, and he knows full of well he's a great champion.
00:25:36Well, let's take a look at how these two match up against one another.
00:25:40And, of course, that big number right up at the top is just that, a big number.
00:25:43Thirty-five years of age is Larry Holmes.
00:25:45The question I guess you might have to ask is, how old are his legs?
00:25:49Otherwise, pretty comparable between these two.
00:25:51David Bay at 28, seven years his junior.
00:25:53You have to think, yes, he's going to be a little bit quicker.
00:25:55Yes, he might be able to go a little bit further.
00:25:57But experience, of course, in this game means an awful lot.
00:26:01Well, one of the tools that we used, and I think used with some degree of success in our last fight,
00:26:05and that being the Bramble-Mancini fight, was the Sports Information Database Fight Stat.
00:26:09And, Larry, we will be using that again tonight to whatever end.
00:26:12Yeah, this is our computer toy that measures a fight quantitatively rather than qualitatively.
00:26:19It tells us how active a fighter is.
00:26:21And, Larry Holmes, in fighting, the fighters we thought were most similar to David Bay,
00:26:26seven years ago against Norton, he was throwing 65 punches around.
00:26:31Against Jerry Cooney, almost three years ago, 40 punches around.
00:26:35And also against Bone Crusher Smith, 40 punches around.
00:26:38The surprising thing about all that, he has landed exactly 20 punches around in all of those fights.
00:26:46So, his claim that he's more efficient and more economical as a fighter is true.
00:26:52And here are his jabs.
00:26:53He threw 42 per round against Norton, 26 in these other two fights.
00:26:58And he landed 13 jabs in each of those fights per round.
00:27:04Once again, more economical and efficient.
00:27:06Now, David Bay, in his only fight against a world-class fighter, Greg Page,
00:27:12threw 32 punches per round and landed approximately half of them.
00:27:17He says he wants to throw twice as many in this fight.
00:27:21That remains to be seen.
00:27:22Page was a fighter who moved away from him more than Holmes will.
00:27:26It's conceivable he will throw more punches in this fight.
00:27:29All right, so those are all the numbers.
00:27:31What's left, then, is to get getting.
00:27:32And now for the pre-fight announcements.
00:27:34Let's go up to ring announcer Chuck Hall.
00:27:36Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
00:27:39Welcome to the Riviera Hotel, where tonight Don King Productions,
00:27:44in association with the Riviera, presents Perseverance, the grand finale.

00:28:02Representing the IBF at ringside this evening, Mr. Jimmy Rondeau.
00:28:08The officials are signed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the next bout of the evening.
00:28:13The judges are Dalby Shirley of Las Vegas, Harold Letterman of New York City,
00:28:17and Tim McDonough of Tacoma, Washington.
00:28:20The timekeeper is Jane Broadfoot.
00:28:23Counting at the knockdowns, Al Bysick.
00:28:25The attending physicians at ringside is Dr. Donald Romeo and Dr. Charles Filippini.
00:28:31The referee for the next contest is Carlos Padilla.
00:28:36This is the main event of the evening, 15 rounds of boxing for the IBF World Heavyweight Championship.
00:28:46Introducing, in the blue corner, the challenger, fighting out of Middlefield, Ohio,
00:28:53weighing 233.25 pounds.
00:28:56His professional record consists of 14 wins, no defeats, with 11 KO's.
00:29:01He is the USBA heavyweight champion.
00:29:05Ladies and gentlemen, introducing David Bayne.
00:29:12And in the red corner, fighting out of Easton, Pennsylvania, weighing 223.5 pounds.
00:29:20He is undefeated in his professional career, with 46 wins, no defeats, and 33 KO's.
00:29:27Ladies and gentlemen, here is the IBF heavyweight champion of the world, Larry Holmes.
00:29:44So there are all the participants in this one.
00:29:46Larry Holmes, right, looks all business right at the moment.
00:29:48Well, on the back of the road, this is it, and we will see.
00:29:51On David Bayne's left arm, a tattoo that says Bay, but says B-A-Y.
00:29:56The reason he says he has that, he says people always mispronounce my name,
00:29:58so I'm not going to have any doubt about it.
00:30:00I'll put it right on my body.
00:30:02I wonder if the tattoo artist blew it, and he's just compensating for it.
00:30:06The only man with a typo and a three-letter word.
00:30:08Here's the instructions.
00:30:09Avoid using any kinds of foul.
00:30:12Don't throw any punches during the break.
00:30:14It's not clear.
00:30:15Any questions?
00:30:16Let's have a good fight.
00:30:17Okay.
00:30:18So let's come out fighting.
00:30:19Larry Holmes says, let's have a good fight.
00:30:20David Bayne, no conversation.
00:30:24Carlos Bedelia, of course, very experienced referee.
00:30:27One thing I want to point out here, as I said earlier,
00:30:30David Bayne's weakness is down the middle because he throws wide punches.
00:30:34He may try what Tim Witherspoon did, which is to use his right hand as a foil,
00:30:39much because Witherspoon and he have had the same trainer.
00:30:44The most technical approach for David Bayne is to get inside of Larry Holmes.
00:30:49Make him work.
00:30:49Make him exchange punches.
00:30:51On the outside, I don't think he has that much of a change.
00:30:53David Bayne left hook, followed by a looping right hand.
00:30:56Sends Holmes into the ropes.
00:30:57I don't think he was hurt.
00:31:01And like Larry stated earlier, being a steamroller, David Bayne,
00:31:05Larry Holmes cannot let David Bayne get the middle.
00:31:09But Carlos Bedelia said, close your gloves.
00:31:12He was hitting Larry Holmes with an open hand.
00:31:14Loud left hand by David Bayne.
00:31:24Bayne did get tired in the later rounds against Greg Page.
00:31:28Feeling that process going on here.
00:31:39I'm sure Larry Holmes wants to see what's in front of him.
00:31:42He is not a notoriously quick starter.
00:31:49You notice what David Bayne is doing is pretty much just popping that jab out.
00:31:53Nothing hard.
00:31:53Normally, guys try to set his man up for a right hand.
00:32:00Short left hook by David Bayne.
00:32:02Caught mostly by the gloves of Larry Holmes.
00:32:04Holmes has seen it all.
00:32:05There's no question about it.
00:32:13What I see in David Bayne, which is a bad mistake and bad habit,
00:32:17is that right hand.
00:32:18Because that right hand is right under his chin.
00:32:19So, good left hook thrown by Larry Holmes with landing perfectly.
00:32:25But he definitely has the timing.
00:32:30David Bayne historically has had to get business done early
00:32:33if he was to do business.
00:32:35And we'll see if that's the case now
00:32:36that he has a little bit of experience.
00:32:39Larry Holmes is working his left chair.
00:32:44Wild right hand.
00:32:45Like Larry said, he's now just trying to take his time
00:32:53and make any punch count.
00:32:57He's picking his shots now.
00:33:00And just kind of flicking off David Bayne's jab,
00:33:03which has largely been ineffective here in the first round.
00:33:0630 seconds remaining, first round.
00:33:08The very best shot is he throws that left jab to the body
00:33:15and comes over with the overhand right.
00:33:25Neither man really scoring here in the first round.
00:33:27Workman-like round for the champion.
00:33:36At the bell.
00:33:37David Bayne not being as aggressive and reckless
00:33:45as he was expected to be in that round.
00:33:48Bucket under.
00:33:58He's trying to carry his right hand over like Willisberger.
00:34:05That was a good jab.
00:34:09Try to come off with the look.
00:34:10Keep pulling back.
00:34:11Right, right.
00:34:12Can't get it in there, man.
00:34:13Work the jab, big guy.
00:34:14Larry Holmes threw only 29 punches
00:34:16but was landing 50%.
00:34:18Yeah, I'm in there.
00:34:19Percentage he's been landing in his recent fights
00:34:21mainly because David Bayne didn't come to him
00:34:24as much as he expected.
00:34:25One more.
00:34:26One more.
00:34:26One more.
00:34:27One more.
00:34:27Eddie Futch was advising Holmes in that round
00:34:35to throw a double up on his jab
00:34:37and then throw some hooks.
00:34:38But the thing is,
00:34:39Larry Holmes has never been a hooking fighter.
00:34:41And that's why Bayne can keep his right hand
00:34:44in front of his chin.
00:34:45A lot of experience in the corners of both these people.
00:34:50Bobby Lewis in the corner of David Bayne
00:34:52and, of course, Eddie Futch, the veteran,
00:34:53in the corner of Larry Holmes.
00:35:00Holmes talking to David Bayne.
00:35:01And I think what he said was,
00:35:02watch your head.
00:35:03Very apparent that Holmes is just trying
00:35:14to pick his spots here early on.
00:35:16But he's throwing a jab to the body often
00:35:18because it's a large talk
00:35:20and it's very difficult to miss the body.
00:35:22The hand, a lot of times,
00:35:24you know, it's difficult to land a punch.
00:35:29The counterpunching right hand by Larry Holmes.
00:35:31You can see him kind of sit back and wait for that.
00:35:33It was a dangerous attempt by David Bayne.
00:35:36He left himself wide open.
00:35:39Bayne just pawing with the left hand.
00:35:42Missed with that right.
00:35:44Larry Holmes just pulling back
00:35:45just enough to get out of the way
00:35:46of the right hand, David Bayne's right hand.
00:35:52And now, Holmes brings the jab
00:35:54up to the head of David Bayne.
00:35:55Holmes is effective with that jab.
00:36:03He's moving it around pretty well.
00:36:06Well, he's starting to measure.
00:36:08That was further than my hand by Larry Holmes.
00:36:10What he's doing, though,
00:36:11he's starting to measure David Bayne.
00:36:13He'll pop this left jab to the body
00:36:14up to the head.
00:36:15And what happens,
00:36:16Bayne rushes in
00:36:16with his hand,
00:36:17with his head first.
00:36:22Bayes' jab absolutely ineffective.
00:36:26Larry Holmes' defense is showing it very well then.
00:36:29And basically, Larry Holmes now
00:36:30is just trying to counterpunch.
00:36:31And what I mean when I say counterpunch,
00:36:33when a fighter throws a punch,
00:36:35the other guy retaliates,
00:36:36especially when he makes this guy miss.
00:36:38This is another good opportunity
00:36:45to counterpunch.
00:36:46All right, as Bayne throws that left jab,
00:36:49he brings it back too slow
00:36:50and also drops it.
00:36:51Good time to counterpunch.
00:36:52That was a good left hand by Bayne.
00:36:53He has Holmes hurt.
00:36:55Out of nowhere, David Bayne
00:36:56with a good, solid punch.
00:37:00That time, David Bayne was here
00:37:01to counter Larry.
00:37:03And Bayne tried to bomb Larry Holmes.
00:37:05He had him hurt for a moment.
00:37:06I'm watching all his facial expression.
00:37:10He's keeping calm.
00:37:12And that is the key.
00:37:13You can't get too excited.
00:37:15He has been there on many occasions.
00:37:18That's when experience comes in.
00:37:22Holmes does not appear hurt any longer.
00:37:24He was definitely stunned
00:37:25by the punch of David Bayne.
00:37:27I think Bayne blew up
00:37:28a great opportunity,
00:37:29a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
00:37:34A good left hook by David Bayne.
00:37:36David Bayne landed the best punch
00:37:42of the fight so far,
00:37:43but he didn't do much else
00:37:44in that round.
00:37:45And you have to wonder right now,
00:37:47is he showing too much respect
00:37:49for Holmes,
00:37:50or is the plan to be
00:37:51more deliberate now
00:37:52so that he can come on later?
00:37:54All right, look.
00:37:55Let's see that punch
00:37:57and how it lands.
00:37:58There's a left hand
00:37:59and Holmes backing away
00:38:01back right into that punch, Ray.
00:38:03Well, that's the mistake
00:38:04that Lawrence makes.
00:38:04He's backing straight up
00:38:05and he's giving Bayne momentum.
00:38:09We've seen it from three angles
00:38:11and it was the same hard punch
00:38:13right to the point of the chin.
00:38:14Take this shot
00:38:15to get the combination
00:38:16to hit that right hand
00:38:17down in the body.
00:38:18You got it.
00:38:19Just work what you've been doing.
00:38:21Work the way you've been doing.
00:38:23Right?
00:38:24It's the upper body movement
00:38:25and the hands is busy.
00:38:27That jam works.
00:38:28Look at him down here.
00:38:29Let's go.
00:38:38Ray, I'm continually amazed
00:38:39that the only effective corners
00:38:41I've ever seen
00:38:42in the sport of boxing
00:38:43are where there was
00:38:43one voice being heard.
00:38:45You just got a good example of that.
00:38:46Bobby Lewis,
00:38:47the only man in the corner
00:38:48of David Bay
00:38:49was doing any talking.
00:38:50It can be quite confusing
00:38:51when a corner is
00:38:52too many guys
00:38:53talking in the corner.
00:38:54Langholm's nails on his toes.
00:38:57And Bay countering
00:38:58by doing the same thing,
00:38:59actually.
00:38:59This is really the signs
00:39:00of a good fight
00:39:01of a great champion
00:39:02because he's changing
00:39:03his tactics now.
00:39:04Trying to see
00:39:05which is more effective.
00:39:07Bay with that right hand
00:39:08that you can see coming.
00:39:12Doesn't exactly disguise
00:39:13that right hand.
00:39:19Holmes on his bicycle now.
00:39:21Just showing David Bay
00:39:22a different look,
00:39:23different side,
00:39:24both figuratively
00:39:25and literally.
00:39:26Langholm has to move.
00:39:27He's moving one way.
00:39:28He should be moving both ways,
00:39:30left and right.
00:39:32Because those looping punches
00:39:33that were thrown by David Bay
00:39:34can land.
00:39:37That was the same punch
00:39:38that Slashley put Holmes down with.
00:39:41Wild left hand
00:39:42by David Bay again
00:39:43and Holmes comes back on
00:39:44and Holmes comes back on
00:39:45and misses with a combination.
00:39:50There's just a slight bit of swelling
00:39:52under the left eye
00:39:53of Larry Holmes.
00:39:55Won't be any problem
00:39:56right at the moment.
00:39:56The kind of punches
00:40:06that Bay throws,
00:40:07there's two ways
00:40:08to get away from him.
00:40:09Number one,
00:40:10you can step into it
00:40:11because quite naturally
00:40:12by being a looping punch,
00:40:14it's not going to land
00:40:15effectively
00:40:16or you can dance away
00:40:17or you can dance away
00:40:17like Larry Holmes
00:40:18has been trying to do.
00:40:21Right hand just got a piece
00:40:23of the face
00:40:23of Larry Holmes.
00:40:29And Bay continues
00:40:30to bring his punches.
00:40:32He's a good right hand
00:40:32counterpunch
00:40:33by Larry Holmes
00:40:34hurt David Bay.
00:40:36It's not to say
00:40:36Bay punches
00:40:37sort of east and west
00:40:38while Holmes is moving
00:40:39north and south.
00:40:50Just then,
00:40:51David Bay put
00:40:51both feet together.
00:40:54It's very easy
00:40:55to get knocked down
00:40:56that way.
00:41:03Both men so far
00:41:04seem to be
00:41:04in pretty good condition.
00:41:05Nobody seems to be
00:41:06any more tired
00:41:07than they were
00:41:07at the opening bell.
00:41:08with Bay,
00:41:20Larry Holmes
00:41:21can't just lay back.
00:41:22He has to be consistent.
00:41:24Keep this man busy.
00:41:25Keep him thinking.
00:41:27Holmes has picked up
00:41:28the tempo here
00:41:29in this third round
00:41:31as we wind down
00:41:34toward the end
00:41:35of round number three.
00:41:36Holmes landed an awfully good
00:41:47punch on Bay
00:41:47in that round
00:41:48and Bay didn't budge,
00:41:50didn't flinch.
00:41:51two punches together.
00:41:52You'd never know
00:41:52he'd been hit.
00:41:54Which means that
00:41:54this could be
00:41:55a very long fight.
00:41:56Knock him out.
00:41:58Knock him out now.
00:41:59Take a big break now.
00:42:01You're bad.
00:42:02You're bad.
00:42:03You knocked him out.
00:42:04Knock him out.
00:42:04That's it.
00:42:05Better when he is.
00:42:05Come on.
00:42:06All right.
00:42:06You knocked him out now.
00:42:07Not too much water.
00:42:08You're okay.
00:42:09You can't carry your shots.
00:42:10You're okay.
00:42:10Try your one-two.
00:42:11You haven't tried
00:42:12the right hand behind you yet.
00:42:13You can set it up.
00:42:14Yeah, you can set it up.
00:42:14Because he made him
00:42:17use his legs a bit.
00:42:19He didn't want to
00:42:19use him this early.
00:42:20All right.
00:42:21Okay.
00:42:23Round four.
00:42:24Oh, yeah.
00:42:25There you see
00:42:26David Bay's
00:42:27statistics for 26 punches
00:42:29in that round.
00:42:30Fewer than he threw
00:42:32in the page fight.
00:42:35His corner seems satisfied
00:42:36that he's making
00:42:37Holmes work harder
00:42:38than he really wants to.
00:42:39Let's see if that's true.
00:42:41It was a funny thing
00:42:42that David Bay said.
00:42:44He said,
00:42:44just the fourth round
00:42:45and 11 more rounds to go.
00:42:48Bobby Lewis also said,
00:42:49you made him use
00:42:49his legs that round.
00:42:51And that was true
00:42:53as Holmes was up
00:42:53on his toes
00:42:54and had to move around
00:42:55a little bit.
00:42:57Sounds so
00:42:58David Bay's corner
00:42:59might be gambling
00:42:59on the fact that
00:43:00Larry Holmes
00:43:00is not in peak condition.
00:43:08A little bit of red
00:43:10under the
00:43:11left eye
00:43:11of David Bay now, too.
00:43:12No cuts,
00:43:13but just
00:43:14a little bit of redness.
00:43:16And a right hand,
00:43:17they say,
00:43:17no knockdown.
00:43:19It was a slip.
00:43:20I didn't think
00:43:21it was that good
00:43:21a right hand.
00:43:22No, he was a slip.
00:43:29In Bay's corner,
00:43:30they were saying,
00:43:31go ahead,
00:43:31knock him off.
00:43:32Just go ahead
00:43:32and knock him off.
00:43:34Easier said than done.
00:43:35Good, good, good, good.
00:43:40Bay is a dangerous
00:43:41type of fighter.
00:43:42First of all,
00:43:42he's very strong
00:43:43and his punch
00:43:44is not really straight.
00:43:46And each punch
00:43:46can really hurt.
00:43:55Bay continues
00:43:55to have that right hand
00:43:56right across his jaw.
00:43:58There was a split right hand
00:43:59and it stood
00:43:59Larry Holmes straight up
00:44:00and he doubled up with it.
00:44:04Holmes does not appear hurt
00:44:06but he did get
00:44:07his attention.
00:44:09One thing about it too.
00:44:10That right hand,
00:44:12he put everything
00:44:12behind him.
00:44:13They put everything
00:44:14behind that right hand.
00:44:16One thing about Bay
00:44:16I see it in his eyes.
00:44:17He is thinking.
00:44:24Bay throwing a little more
00:44:25in combination now too,
00:44:27right?
00:44:27Well, he saw
00:44:28the right hand
00:44:29gets through.
00:44:30Bay just walked away
00:44:31and he see the right hand
00:44:32is on the land.
00:44:34He's able to get through
00:44:35by home defense.
00:44:38Holmes stays right
00:44:39in front of him,
00:44:40however.
00:44:42Good exchange right there.
00:44:43Bay got the better of it.
00:44:44One upstairs,
00:44:45one downstairs.
00:44:48Bay just became
00:44:49a counter puncher.
00:44:50Right through his punch,
00:44:52David Bay gave him
00:44:53his shoulder,
00:44:53came back with his own
00:44:54right hand.
00:44:56Bay, a little bit more
00:44:56work here in this round.
00:44:58solid jab by Larry Holmes
00:45:06right on the nose
00:45:07of David Bay.
00:45:07Still a little swelling
00:45:08under the left eye of Bay.
00:45:14Good jab by Larry.
00:45:15He has to keep that up there.
00:45:16And just as Larry Holmes
00:45:21is doing in the first
00:45:22couple of rounds,
00:45:22David Bay now seems
00:45:23to be just waiting
00:45:24for his shot.
00:45:25Bay, I don't see
00:45:26him being waiting
00:45:26for the right hand.
00:45:28Just releasing.
00:45:30Bay, he's right.
00:45:31Leave it up, leave it up.
00:45:33Alas Padilla
00:45:33separates him
00:45:34from off the ropes.
00:45:35We come near the end
00:45:36of the fourth round.
00:45:38Ho, ho!
00:45:38The surprising thing
00:45:41in this fight so far
00:45:42is that David Bay
00:45:43has been able
00:45:44to avoid Holmes'
00:45:46good right hand.
00:45:47It's not a great,
00:45:48strong right hand,
00:45:49but it's a good,
00:45:50straight and solid
00:45:51and accurate right hand,
00:45:53and Holmes hasn't been able
00:45:54to hit him very much with it.
00:45:55I thought Bay
00:45:56convincingly won that round,
00:45:58and he's absolutely fearless
00:46:00in there as far as
00:46:01Holmes is concerned.
00:46:05Here we see
00:46:06when Holmes went down,
00:46:07and Holmes was off balance,
00:46:09obviously not a knockdown.
00:46:13And here later
00:46:14in the round,
00:46:16Bay coming in,
00:46:17and there was
00:46:18a solid right hand,
00:46:19a big sweeping
00:46:20right hand jug,
00:46:22as they call it,
00:46:22curveball in baseball,
00:46:23right on the jaw
00:46:24of Holmes.
00:46:25Kill that body.
00:46:26Come on, go, Rob.
00:46:27Yep.
00:46:29I got him out.
00:46:30They're telling Bay
00:46:31now to go for the body.
00:46:37And she got a
00:46:37good look
00:46:38at the swelling.
00:46:39It's actually
00:46:39a long side
00:46:40and a little bit
00:46:41underneath the left eye.
00:46:43It's not really
00:46:43the kind of thing
00:46:44that right at this moment
00:46:46would be any kind
00:46:47of a factor
00:46:47in the fight.
00:46:48Let's go, man.
00:46:49Let's do it.
00:46:50Oh, baby.
00:46:51Bring it up.
00:46:52Bring it up.
00:46:53Put it together, Dave.
00:46:54Put it together.
00:46:55Put it together.
00:46:55Put it together.
00:46:55Put it together.
00:46:56Makings of a good fight here.
00:47:00Holmes now up-tempo
00:47:02to start this round.
00:47:03All right.
00:47:04Good shot.
00:47:16Good body shot by Bay.
00:47:17Very good right hand.
00:47:18Right to the ribs.
00:47:19Larry's finding it difficult
00:47:20to find a target
00:47:21with that right hand.
00:47:23Bay doesn't look like
00:47:24he would be any kind
00:47:25of a secret,
00:47:26but he has made
00:47:26Larry Holmes miss.
00:47:28Well, he's starting
00:47:28to move his upper body.
00:47:29And as big a man
00:47:31as he is,
00:47:32he's done a pretty good job.
00:47:37Right hand by Larry Holmes.
00:47:38Short right hand.
00:47:39Got in,
00:47:39but that was a good shot
00:47:40by Holmes,
00:47:41and Bay didn't take
00:47:41a backward step.
00:47:48Put it together.
00:47:49Put it together.
00:47:50Put it together.
00:47:51Put it together.
00:47:51Put it together.
00:47:52Put it together.
00:47:53And all day.
00:47:54All day.
00:47:56Let's do it, Barry.
00:47:57Put it together.
00:47:58Look at it.
00:47:58Look at it.
00:47:58Look at it.
00:47:59Look at it.
00:47:59Look at it.
00:48:05Swelling still there
00:48:06under the eye
00:48:07of David Bay.
00:48:09He's trying to make use
00:48:10of that jab
00:48:11with only a modicum
00:48:12of success so far.
00:48:16Larry wants to do
00:48:16the right hand,
00:48:17but he knows
00:48:18that Bay's right hand
00:48:19is cocked also.
00:48:21Anticipating.
00:48:24Bay has gotten
00:48:24Larry Holmes' attention
00:48:25on a couple of occasions,
00:48:26and so Holmes has got
00:48:27to show a little bit
00:48:28of respect.
00:48:29Good combination by
00:48:38Holmes, a wild left hand.
00:48:42In Holmes' corner,
00:48:43they continue to yell
00:48:44Everlast,
00:48:45and as we mentioned
00:48:46in a couple of other
00:48:47Larry Holmes fights
00:48:47that we've done here
00:48:48on HBO,
00:48:48that usually is a signal
00:48:50for their fighter
00:48:51to go for the body.
00:48:52And again, the body
00:48:55is a big target,
00:48:56and you just can't move
00:48:57the body like you can
00:48:57the head.
00:48:59See at some point
00:49:00unusual in David Bay,
00:49:02starting to move around.
00:49:05Now for the overhand
00:49:06of Michael Lyre.
00:49:06And it's there for him.
00:49:09He went downstairs,
00:49:10pretty good shot
00:49:11to the heart that time.
00:49:12Step up, step up, step up.
00:49:14I was surprised that
00:49:16Larry went to the
00:49:16bye with that right hand.
00:49:18Combination by Bay,
00:49:19good counterpunch
00:49:20by Holmes,
00:49:21and that's stunned Bay.
00:49:26Well, Larry throws his punch
00:49:27and Bay fouls right back.
00:49:29Nothing that's making
00:49:30Larry cautious.
00:49:32Larry's now starting
00:49:32to come up with his punch.
00:49:33It's a little bit more
00:49:34of an uppercut
00:49:35rather than that straight
00:49:36right hand
00:49:37that is the
00:49:37Holmes' trademark.
00:49:42Another surprising round
00:49:44in that Bay
00:49:45is not being
00:49:45as forceful as expected.
00:49:47Showing some
00:49:48boxing ability,
00:49:49making Holmes' lead.
00:49:50Keep going to him, chap.
00:49:51Keep going to him.
00:49:52He can't do anything
00:49:52when you're backing him up.
00:49:53When he steps back,
00:49:54you step in.
00:49:55Keep that punching.
00:49:57He wants a lot
00:49:58of punching room.
00:49:59Don't give it to him.
00:50:00He's starting to tire now.
00:50:01Now you've got to keep on him.
00:50:02You've got to be there, chap.
00:50:03You've got to be there.
00:50:04You're working all the time.
00:50:05You're working all the time.
00:50:06You're the boss there.
00:50:07You're the champ, right?
00:50:08Body two.
00:50:09Bang, bang, bang, bang.
00:50:10You're finishing up.
00:50:12He's finishing up
00:50:12with a right hand.
00:50:14With the right uppercut.
00:50:15You finish up
00:50:16with a right hand
00:50:17on top.
00:50:17You understand?
00:50:18The right hand is cold
00:50:19going to be easier.
00:50:20I know it.
00:50:20Now, also.
00:50:21Yeah, on the back of my hand.
00:50:23Yes, all right.
00:50:23Wipe his heart out.
00:50:24Right?
00:50:25You know what you need
00:50:25to do, Big Jack?
00:50:26Come on, we do it all day.
00:50:27Come on, knock him out here.
00:50:28Knock him out.
00:50:29Knock him out.
00:50:29Lock him out.
00:50:29Lock him out.
00:50:29Lock him out.
00:50:30Now, right?
00:50:31Big Jack, just do it.
00:50:32Both corners seem to be
00:50:34very happy
00:50:35at the progress
00:50:35of the fight
00:50:36up to this point.
00:50:38David Bay has survived
00:50:39the first third
00:50:39of the fight.
00:50:40Let's see if age
00:50:41does indeed begin
00:50:42to tell
00:50:43on Larry Holmes.
00:50:44And in Holmes' corner,
00:50:45they're saying
00:50:45you've got to be right on him.
00:50:46You've got to keep him working.
00:50:47In Bay's corner,
00:50:48they were saying
00:50:49he's starting to get tired.
00:50:59They were saying, Ray,
00:51:00that David Bay
00:51:02should come over
00:51:02Larry Holmes'
00:51:04right uppercuts
00:51:04with his own right hand.
00:51:06Normally,
00:51:07when you throw
00:51:07a right uppercut,
00:51:08especially because
00:51:09from the distance,
00:51:10look at that foot by Bay.
00:51:11From the distance,
00:51:13you're susceptible
00:51:13to take a right hand
00:51:14because your chin is open.
00:51:16It's like a whip,
00:51:42and it's very effective,
00:51:43very strong.
00:51:44And these men
00:51:47remember undefeated
00:51:48as professionals.
00:51:49Larry Holmes
00:51:49in 46 fights,
00:51:50David Bay
00:51:51in only 14,
00:51:52but nearly a loss
00:51:53between them.
00:51:56Everlast,
00:51:56Everlast,
00:51:57Everlast right here.
00:52:02The man is cut.
00:52:03The only mark,
00:52:03really,
00:52:04is the slight swelling
00:52:05and a little bit
00:52:06of red chafing
00:52:06under the eye
00:52:07of David Bay.
00:52:08There was some swelling
00:52:09a little bit earlier
00:52:10under the left eye
00:52:11of Larry Holmes.
00:52:12It does not appear
00:52:12to be any worse.
00:52:13good shot there.
00:52:14That's what Larry has to do.
00:52:16Make fake
00:52:17Minnesota mistake
00:52:17by those wild punches,
00:52:19looping right hand,
00:52:20and then capitalize on it.
00:52:23He has a counter.
00:52:26Okay, bring it up.
00:52:28Come on.
00:52:32But it also makes you think
00:52:33twice when a guy
00:52:34possesses so much power
00:52:36in both hands.
00:52:37Okay.
00:52:38Dave winds up
00:52:39with that right hand.
00:52:39One minute left.
00:52:40Take it out there,
00:52:43big catch.
00:52:43Keep him up there.
00:52:45I ain't even gonna do it,
00:52:46you guys.
00:52:46Come on,
00:52:47boy.
00:52:47Let's do it.
00:52:48Let's do it.
00:52:48Let's do it.
00:52:48Let's do it.
00:52:48Let's do it.
00:52:48Let's do it.
00:52:49Let's do it.
00:52:49Let's do it.
00:52:50Let's do it.
00:52:50Let's do it.
00:52:50Let's do it.
00:52:51Let's do it.
00:52:51Let's do it.
00:52:52Let's do it.
00:52:52Let's do it.
00:52:52They're perhaps
00:52:53taking a little bit
00:52:54of a breather
00:52:54here in this round.
00:52:55Well,
00:52:55he's torn with
00:52:56that left hand
00:52:56of his
00:52:57and just keeping
00:52:58Larrie at distance.
00:53:00And Holmes doing
00:53:00what his corner
00:53:01exhorted him to do
00:53:02and is keeping
00:53:02busy,
00:53:03stay on top of him.
00:53:04I like that combination
00:53:04just now by Larrie Holmes.
00:53:06Didn't really land clean
00:53:07with the fact
00:53:09he's trying
00:53:10something different now.
00:53:15Combination mostly
00:53:15on the top
00:53:16of the head
00:53:16by Bay.
00:53:17Bay threw
00:53:18a series of punches,
00:53:19man.
00:53:20He went to Larrie's body.
00:53:21There was a good
00:53:22right hand.
00:53:23That might have been
00:53:24Bay's best shot
00:53:24but Holmes
00:53:25didn't take
00:53:27a step back.
00:53:34Bay has that
00:53:35chin behind
00:53:36his shoulder.
00:53:38He keeps
00:53:38his tongue
00:53:39worried low.
00:53:43Got to be
00:53:43big around.
00:53:44Got to be
00:53:44big around,
00:53:45big guy.
00:53:45Got to be
00:53:45big around.
00:53:46The old champion
00:53:47is working hard.
00:53:49You got to put
00:53:50them together,
00:53:50work them off.
00:53:51When Bay came
00:53:52to him,
00:53:52he stood
00:53:53in counterpunch.
00:53:54When Bay backed
00:53:54up,
00:53:54he went after.
00:53:55hook the cross
00:53:56worked on the guy.
00:53:57He took him
00:53:57with that shot
00:53:58in the corner.
00:53:59He's got to
00:53:59get short left
00:53:59hook,
00:54:00except in fans
00:54:00with short left
00:54:01hook and a quick
00:54:01right hand line.
00:54:02Put my arm
00:54:02left on.
00:54:06There's David
00:54:06Bay with his
00:54:08haymaker
00:54:08that landed
00:54:11in Phoenix
00:54:12someplace.
00:54:18Make them
00:54:19hands move
00:54:20constantly.
00:54:21You got it?
00:54:22Yeah.
00:54:22There you
00:54:24There you see
00:54:24a few punches
00:54:25David Bay
00:54:25is landing.
00:54:28Still being
00:54:29more resourceful
00:54:30and economical
00:54:31than we expected
00:54:32him to be
00:54:33and perhaps
00:54:34that is
00:54:34to his own
00:54:35benefit.
00:54:36Perhaps he is
00:54:37Ray being a little
00:54:38respectful of
00:54:40Larry Holmes.
00:54:40And so we
00:54:42start the
00:54:43seventh round.
00:54:44We'll see
00:54:44now if
00:54:45David Bay
00:54:45really was
00:54:45just taking
00:54:46a breather
00:54:46in that round.
00:54:47Which fighters
00:54:48often do,
00:54:48do they not?
00:54:49Oh,
00:54:49for sure.
00:54:50Especially when
00:54:50you exert yourself.
00:54:51But I don't
00:54:53know.
00:54:53I don't think
00:54:53he's really
00:54:54respecting Larry
00:54:56too much
00:54:56because he
00:54:57starts to
00:54:57get aggressive
00:54:58at the
00:55:00beginning of
00:55:01each round.
00:55:02But I think
00:55:03a couple times
00:55:04he had a good
00:55:05opportunity
00:55:05and he just
00:55:06blew it.
00:55:07Hold it.
00:55:08Hold it.
00:55:13This, of course,
00:55:14is the seventh round.
00:55:17We're going
00:55:1715 here.
00:55:20So not yet
00:55:21at the halfway
00:55:21point of this
00:55:22fight.
00:55:37Both men
00:55:38might have
00:55:38taken the best
00:55:39shot of their
00:55:39opponent so far.
00:55:41That's the best
00:55:41way to get the
00:55:42thumb in and out
00:55:42because of the
00:55:43open glove of
00:55:44David Bay.
00:55:45He was warned
00:55:46about that in the
00:55:46first round
00:55:47by Carlos
00:55:47Padilla.
00:55:49Holmes stalking
00:55:50David Bay.
00:55:51That's the
00:55:52thing you do.
00:55:53That left
00:55:53jab, just keep
00:55:53talking.
00:55:54That's all
00:55:54he has to do.
00:55:57David is
00:55:57looking for the
00:55:58one shot.
00:56:00They might be
00:56:01getting a little
00:56:02bit tired.
00:56:10Well, now he's
00:56:11starting to work
00:56:11his left jab
00:56:12more and more
00:56:13and he's
00:56:14starting to
00:56:14double up on
00:56:14it because
00:56:15that left jab
00:56:16leads up to
00:56:17everything.
00:56:17It's such a
00:56:18man up to the
00:56:18right hand,
00:56:19left hook,
00:56:19or whatever.
00:56:21left jab is
00:56:22very important
00:56:23Barry.
00:56:24A lot of
00:56:25fires, they forget
00:56:26to use it.
00:56:27Well, it's
00:56:27definitely what
00:56:28has brought
00:56:28Larry Holmes
00:56:29to his 46
00:56:30victories without
00:56:31a defeat.
00:56:32That's been
00:56:32his primary
00:56:33weapon.
00:56:33The left jab
00:56:34has set it up
00:56:35and the right
00:56:35hand more
00:56:35often than not
00:56:36has finished
00:56:36it off.
00:56:38Beautiful
00:56:38right hand
00:56:39right there.
00:56:40That was a
00:56:40beautiful time
00:56:41right hand.
00:56:42Counter right
00:56:42hand.
00:56:42The seventh
00:56:49round has
00:56:49never been
00:56:50of great
00:56:52success for
00:56:53the champion
00:56:53Larry Holmes.
00:56:54He has been
00:56:54staggered and
00:56:55in fact knocked
00:56:55down on a
00:56:56couple of
00:56:56occasions in the
00:56:57seventh round.
00:56:57Bombing right
00:56:58hand by David
00:56:59Bay, but it
00:57:00didn't appear to
00:57:01hurt Holmes.
00:57:02What Larry's
00:57:03doing now, he's
00:57:04riding with the
00:57:05right hand.
00:57:06He's going with
00:57:06the flow of the
00:57:07punch.
00:57:07So he's
00:57:10taking the
00:57:10power away from
00:57:11him.
00:57:25Bay still
00:57:25appears to be
00:57:26just looking for
00:57:27the, not so
00:57:28much the one
00:57:28punch, but the
00:57:29one punch that
00:57:29gets stunned.
00:57:31Larry Holmes
00:57:32and then follow
00:57:33up on it.
00:57:34Biting his
00:57:34time, Holmes
00:57:35the busier of
00:57:36the two fighters.
00:57:37That was a good
00:57:41round for Larry
00:57:42Holmes.
00:57:43I think it's
00:57:44fair to say now
00:57:44that he's out
00:57:45classing David
00:57:46Bay, that Bay
00:57:47isn't doing
00:57:48enough to
00:57:48discombobulate
00:57:50him.
00:57:51I have Holmes
00:57:52well in front
00:57:53after seven
00:57:54rounds.
00:57:57Yeah, yeah.
00:57:58You're waiting
00:57:59on him too
00:57:59much, Sam.
00:58:00You're waiting
00:58:00too long.
00:58:01Jab, jab,
00:58:02make him make
00:58:03the move,
00:58:03then you counter
00:58:04punch on him.
00:58:04Don't just wait
00:58:04on him to make
00:58:05the move.
00:58:05Stick that
00:58:06jab on there,
00:58:06big jack.
00:58:06Start off
00:58:07and finish
00:58:08with it.
00:58:08Come on,
00:58:09do it.
00:58:09And finish
00:58:10with it,
00:58:10big jack.
00:58:11Come on now.
00:58:12We want to
00:58:12work this fight.
00:58:13Come on now,
00:58:13let's work.
00:58:14Now look at that
00:58:14percentage.
00:58:15You're bad,
00:58:15man.
00:58:15You want to be
00:58:1610?
00:58:16Almost 80%
00:58:17of the punches
00:58:18that Holmes
00:58:19threw in that
00:58:20round.
00:58:21Remember that
00:58:22earlier, before
00:58:23the fight, we
00:58:24pointed out he
00:58:24was landing 20
00:58:25punches around
00:58:26when he won the
00:58:28title from Ken
00:58:29Norton seven
00:58:29years ago.
00:58:3020 punches
00:58:31around when he
00:58:32defeated Jerry
00:58:33Cooney and Bone
00:58:33Crusher Smith.
00:58:34He landed 20
00:58:36punches out of
00:58:3626 thrown in
00:58:38that round.
00:58:39Excuse me,
00:58:39those were 20
00:58:40jabs in that
00:58:41round.
00:58:42So we come to
00:58:43the eighth round,
00:58:43a fight that
00:58:44right now seems
00:58:45to be controlled
00:58:46by the champion
00:58:47Larry Holmes.
00:58:47starting to get a
00:58:53rhythm, man.
00:58:54Starting to feel
00:58:54very relaxed.
00:58:56You may also
00:58:57realize that David
00:58:57Bay is not
00:58:58going to hurt
00:58:59him.
00:59:00But David
00:59:01Bay has,
00:59:01man, his best
00:59:02punch.
00:59:04Okay,
00:59:04bring it up.
00:59:06Seven,
00:59:06seven.
00:59:11Holy,
00:59:12holy,
00:59:12holy.
00:59:13Seven.
00:59:13Seven.
00:59:13Seven.
00:59:19Okay,
00:59:20no,
00:59:20no,
00:59:20no.
00:59:20Still good.
00:59:23Holmes still
00:59:24up on his
00:59:25toes,
00:59:25moving pretty
00:59:25good right
00:59:26at the moment.
00:59:2746 fights,
00:59:28how much wear
00:59:29and tear on
00:59:29the 35-year-old
00:59:30body,
00:59:30nobody knows.
00:59:31Well,
00:59:32that's the
00:59:32question that
00:59:32people want
00:59:33to see answered,
00:59:34whether or not
00:59:34age is affected
00:59:35with Larry
00:59:36Holmes,
00:59:36whether or not
00:59:36he's taking
00:59:37a lot of
00:59:38shots.
00:59:39Larry states
00:59:40he hasn't
00:59:40taken that
00:59:40much punishment
00:59:41in the ring.
00:59:43So this fight
00:59:44here,
00:59:44whether it's
00:59:45his last fight
00:59:45or not,
00:59:46means a lot
00:59:47to him.
00:59:48That swelling
00:59:49under David
00:59:50Bay's left eye
00:59:51now is a little
00:59:51bit worse.
00:59:52There's actually
00:59:52a puffiness
00:59:53all the way
00:59:54under the eye.
00:59:54It was alongside
00:59:55and below
00:59:56the eye before
00:59:56and now it's
00:59:57getting very
00:59:57puffy and
00:59:58looks as though
00:59:59it could cut
01:00:00at any moment.
01:00:01It is below
01:00:02the eye,
01:00:02however,
01:00:02so blood will
01:00:03not get into
01:00:04the eye
01:00:04should that
01:00:04happen,
01:00:05but I'm
01:00:05sure it could
01:00:05be bothersome
01:00:06because the eye
01:00:06can start to
01:00:07close.
01:00:07Okay.
01:00:07That's the same
01:00:14eye that
01:00:15David Bay
01:00:16was cut on
01:00:16under,
01:00:17I should say,
01:00:18against Greg
01:00:19Page.
01:00:20One thing
01:00:20about it,
01:00:20those two cuts
01:00:21that he suffered
01:00:22in the fight
01:00:23with Greg
01:00:23Page did not
01:00:24affect his
01:00:24performance.
01:00:26He stayed
01:00:26aggressive
01:00:26and he continued
01:00:27to do a lot
01:00:27of punches.
01:00:28Good right
01:00:28hand and
01:00:29Bay is down.
01:00:30Larry Holmes
01:00:31with a solid
01:00:31right hand.
01:00:32David Bay
01:00:32doesn't know
01:00:33where he is
01:00:33right now.
01:00:35He's got
01:00:36about seven
01:00:36seconds to
01:00:37get it back
01:00:37together here.
01:00:38That was
01:00:38a stunning
01:00:39right hand.
01:00:40Oh,
01:00:40we're talking
01:00:40history now,
01:00:41but watch
01:00:42the eye
01:00:42go to work.
01:00:43Watch him
01:00:43go to work.
01:00:44Now this
01:00:44is where
01:00:45the experience
01:00:45comes in.
01:00:46Just a minute
01:00:47of time.
01:00:49He's out.
01:00:50David Bay
01:00:51just trying
01:00:52to hold on
01:00:52for all
01:00:53he's worth
01:00:53here.
01:00:54Connors Padilla
01:00:55trying to
01:00:56separate them.
01:00:57His legs
01:00:58are gone.
01:00:59The eye
01:00:59is going
01:00:59to work
01:00:59like jab
01:01:00and get
01:01:00that right
01:01:00hand in.
01:01:02It was a
01:01:02stunning
01:01:02right hand.
01:01:03There was
01:01:03another one.
01:01:03Holmes not
01:01:04wasting
01:01:04any punches.
01:01:05Bay just
01:01:06holding on.
01:01:08He's got
01:01:08a long
01:01:09way to
01:01:09go.
01:01:1030 seconds
01:01:11remaining.
01:01:12Watch the
01:01:12way hand
01:01:12again,
01:01:13Barry.
01:01:14Well,
01:01:14that could
01:01:15be it.
01:01:15That could
01:01:16be it.
01:01:17And Bay
01:01:18don't know
01:01:18where he
01:01:19is.
01:01:19Padilla
01:01:19taking a
01:01:20close look.
01:01:21Still 20
01:01:21seconds to
01:01:22go in
01:01:22the lounge.
01:01:23Bay trying
01:01:23to hold
01:01:24on.
01:01:24He's got
01:01:24nothing
01:01:24left.
01:01:25Just hoping
01:01:26to weather
01:01:27the storm.
01:01:28And he's
01:01:29down again.
01:01:29down again.
01:01:30And the
01:01:35count goes
01:01:36on here.
01:01:38David Bay
01:01:39just trying
01:01:39to get
01:01:40through it.
01:01:40He says,
01:01:41yes, I
01:01:41know where
01:01:41I am.
01:01:42I'm not
01:01:42sure he's
01:01:43right.
01:01:43And he
01:01:44did manage
01:01:44to get
01:01:44through the
01:01:45round.
01:01:47That
01:01:47right hand
01:01:48was beautiful
01:01:48the way
01:01:49Larry Holmes
01:01:50just set
01:01:51his man
01:01:51up.
01:01:52Let's
01:02:12take a look
01:02:12at this.
01:02:14Now Larry
01:02:15Holmes
01:02:15finally whipped
01:02:16the right
01:02:16across.
01:02:16There you
01:02:17saw a clean
01:02:17right hand.
01:02:18Bay was
01:02:19hurt and the
01:02:19left hand
01:02:20just sort of
01:02:20pushed him
01:02:21over.
01:02:22There again
01:02:24later in
01:02:25the round
01:02:25another
01:02:25right hand.
01:02:26Bay fighting
01:02:27back gallantly
01:02:28although hurt
01:02:28and not
01:02:29knowing what
01:02:30state he's
01:02:31in.
01:02:32Crashes
01:02:32down but
01:02:34he got up
01:02:34and weathered
01:02:35the storm.
01:02:36David Bay
01:02:37disarmed
01:02:37landmines in
01:02:38the army but
01:02:39he's finding
01:02:39it harder to
01:02:40disarm Larry
01:02:41Holmes here
01:02:42in Las Vegas.
01:02:44Now
01:02:44express with
01:02:44dominate and
01:02:46Bay starts
01:02:46this round
01:02:47on rubber
01:02:47legs and
01:02:48Holmes of
01:02:49course knows
01:02:49it.
01:02:50Larry's
01:02:51picking his
01:02:52shots now.
01:02:52Again the
01:02:52right hand
01:02:53will be the
01:02:54plus they
01:02:54thought would
01:02:55do David
01:02:55Bay in.
01:02:56Bay is
01:02:57still on
01:02:57he's on
01:02:59liquorice
01:03:00sticks right
01:03:00now he's
01:03:00got no
01:03:01place to
01:03:01go and
01:03:02no place
01:03:02to hide.
01:03:04Bob
01:03:05Channing
01:03:05Larry
01:03:06Larry
01:03:06you can
01:03:07see Larry
01:03:07setting
01:03:08his
01:03:08manor.
01:03:08Only
01:03:09a body
01:03:09at a
01:03:09time.
01:03:10Take a
01:03:10body
01:03:10and watch
01:03:11straight to
01:03:11the head
01:03:12Larry.
01:03:16I think
01:03:17Bay knows
01:03:17it as
01:03:17much as
01:03:18Holmes knows
01:03:18it here.
01:03:20Larry was a
01:03:20little bit
01:03:21short with
01:03:21that right
01:03:21hand that
01:03:22time.
01:03:24Bay just
01:03:24trying to
01:03:24get life
01:03:25back in
01:03:25the legs.
01:03:26Easier said
01:03:26than done
01:03:26isn't it
01:03:27right?
01:03:27It is
01:03:27especially
01:03:28when you
01:03:28don't have
01:03:29that much
01:03:29experience.
01:03:30Bay did
01:03:30the right
01:03:31thing when
01:03:31he grabbed
01:03:31Larry and
01:03:32just held
01:03:32it on.
01:03:34At this
01:03:35stage now
01:03:35this is
01:03:36when
01:03:36championship
01:03:37material
01:03:37comes in.
01:03:38All the
01:03:38experience
01:03:39ring
01:03:39generalship
01:03:39it comes
01:03:40into play.
01:03:42Bay just
01:03:42trying to
01:03:43cover up
01:03:43and Holmes
01:03:43still got
01:03:44through that
01:03:44with a
01:03:45good right
01:03:45hand.
01:03:49Bay's
01:03:50reaching out
01:03:50trying to
01:03:51give Larry
01:03:51the stiff
01:03:52jab.
01:03:54Mistake
01:03:54he's
01:03:54making
01:03:54he's
01:03:55coming
01:03:55back.
01:03:56He's
01:03:56bringing
01:03:56the left
01:03:57jab
01:03:57back
01:03:57down.
01:04:01Holmes
01:04:02just
01:04:02looks
01:04:02like
01:04:02he's
01:04:02just
01:04:02waiting
01:04:03for
01:04:03one
01:04:03shot
01:04:03here
01:04:04waiting
01:04:04for
01:04:04the
01:04:04right
01:04:04opening
01:04:05doesn't
01:04:05want
01:04:05to
01:04:05waste
01:04:05anything.
01:04:10What's
01:04:10going to
01:04:10happen
01:04:11David
01:04:11Bay may
01:04:12be
01:04:12group
01:04:12but
01:04:13I
01:04:13doubt
01:04:13very
01:04:13seriously
01:04:13because
01:04:14I
01:04:14think
01:04:14Larry
01:04:14knows
01:04:15exactly
01:04:15what
01:04:15he's
01:04:15doing.
01:04:16There's
01:04:16a good
01:04:17right
01:04:17hand
01:04:17counter
01:04:17punch
01:04:18by
01:04:18Larry
01:04:18Holmes
01:04:18to
01:04:18get
01:04:19Bay
01:04:19off
01:04:19him.
01:04:20Bay
01:04:20doesn't
01:04:20have
01:04:21much
01:04:21left.
01:04:23I
01:04:23also
01:04:23know
01:04:24that
01:04:24he
01:04:24can
01:04:24hurt
01:04:24David
01:04:25Bay.
01:04:27I
01:04:27think
01:04:28that
01:04:28is
01:04:28going
01:04:28to
01:04:28weigh
01:04:28him
01:04:28down
01:04:29and
01:04:29make
01:04:29it
01:04:29easier
01:04:29because
01:04:30Bay
01:04:31is
01:04:31a
01:04:31strong
01:04:31guy
01:04:31so
01:04:33he's
01:04:33always
01:04:33dangerous
01:04:34Larry's
01:04:35doing the
01:04:35right
01:04:35thing.
01:04:37Bay pretty
01:04:38much
01:04:38stiff-legged
01:04:39right at
01:04:40the moment
01:04:40just
01:04:40like his
01:04:42legs don't
01:04:42want to
01:04:42follow his
01:04:43body.
01:04:44You
01:04:44know
01:04:44David
01:04:44Bay's
01:04:45punches
01:04:45are not
01:04:45that
01:04:46crispy
01:04:46anymore.
01:04:50And
01:04:50Holmes
01:04:51continuing
01:04:51just to
01:04:52bide his
01:04:52time
01:04:52here
01:04:52just
01:04:53playing
01:04:53a
01:04:53waiting
01:04:53game
01:04:54and
01:04:55it
01:04:55appears
01:04:55only
01:04:55to
01:04:56be
01:04:56a
01:04:56question
01:04:56of
01:04:56time.
01:04:58The
01:05:07guy
01:05:07has yet
01:05:08to
01:05:08start
01:05:08a
01:05:08first
01:05:08combination
01:05:09again.
01:05:11And
01:05:11I think
01:05:11Carlos
01:05:11Padilla
01:05:12is
01:05:12keeping
01:05:12a
01:05:12full
01:05:12side
01:05:13on
01:05:13David
01:05:13Bay.
01:05:14Now
01:05:14really
01:05:15in
01:05:15support
01:05:15of
01:05:16Larry
01:05:16Holmes.
01:05:16In
01:05:16fact
01:05:16as
01:05:17supportive
01:05:17as I
01:05:17can
01:05:17remember
01:05:18them
01:05:18being
01:05:18here
01:05:18in
01:05:18Las
01:05:19Vegas
01:05:19as
01:05:19the
01:05:19champion.
01:05:20Bay
01:05:20now
01:05:20is
01:05:21starting
01:05:21to
01:05:21regain
01:05:22his
01:05:22dream.
01:05:25I
01:05:25just
01:05:25knew
01:05:25it
01:05:25was
01:05:25over.
01:05:28Bay
01:05:30may
01:05:31have
01:05:32his
01:05:32legs
01:05:32back
01:05:32but
01:05:32he's
01:05:33a
01:05:33tired
01:05:33fighter
01:05:33right
01:05:33now.
01:05:34All
01:05:34the
01:05:34starts
01:05:35seem
01:05:35to go
01:05:35out
01:05:36in the
01:05:36eighth round.
01:05:37There
01:05:38was
01:05:38good
01:05:38right
01:05:39hand
01:05:39by
01:05:39Larry
01:05:40Holmes.
01:05:42And
01:05:42another
01:05:42good
01:05:43right
01:05:43hand
01:05:43at
01:05:43the
01:05:44bell.
01:05:47You
01:05:47have
01:05:47to give
01:05:48David
01:05:48Bay
01:05:48credit
01:05:48for
01:05:49surviving
01:05:50that
01:05:50round.
01:05:51For
01:05:52showing
01:05:52his
01:05:52courage.
01:05:54That's
01:05:54what
01:05:54got
01:05:54him
01:05:54here.
01:05:56His
01:05:56size,
01:05:57his
01:05:57courage,
01:05:57his
01:05:58discipline.
01:05:59Not
01:06:00his
01:06:00talent
01:06:01obviously.
01:06:02You
01:06:02gotta
01:06:03step
01:06:03it
01:06:03out
01:06:03and
01:06:04work
01:06:04on.
01:06:04your
01:06:05left
01:06:06hand
01:06:06up.
01:06:06I
01:06:07want
01:06:07it
01:06:07up.
01:06:07I
01:06:08want
01:06:08it
01:06:08up.
01:06:08I
01:06:08don't
01:06:09want
01:06:09your
01:06:09left
01:06:09hand
01:06:09down.
01:06:10You
01:06:10understand?
01:06:11And
01:06:12when you're
01:06:12there,
01:06:12when you're
01:06:12moving towards
01:06:13him,
01:06:13don't move
01:06:13towards him
01:06:14with your
01:06:14hand
01:06:14down.
01:06:15Hand
01:06:15up.
01:06:16Then
01:06:16you start
01:06:16to bang him.
01:06:17He's
01:06:18got body
01:06:18in here.
01:06:19Body
01:06:19in here.
01:06:19Run
01:06:20your hand.
01:06:20Close
01:06:21your eyes.
01:06:21You
01:06:21understand
01:06:22what I'm
01:06:22saying?
01:06:22All
01:06:23right,
01:06:23big
01:06:23Jack.
01:06:23Get
01:06:24the
01:06:24bigger.
01:06:24Push
01:06:25up on
01:06:26myself.
01:06:26Push
01:06:27up.
01:06:28All
01:06:28right,
01:06:28big
01:06:29Jack.
01:06:29We're
01:06:30working.
01:06:31We're
01:06:32working
01:06:32off.
01:06:33We're
01:06:34working
01:06:34off.
01:06:35These
01:06:35rounds are
01:06:35most
01:06:36important.
01:06:36Ray
01:06:37may
01:06:37not have
01:06:37an
01:06:38elephant
01:06:38gun,
01:06:38but he's
01:06:39got a
01:06:39machine
01:06:40gun and
01:06:40he still
01:06:41has a
01:06:41lot of
01:06:41bullets
01:06:41left in
01:06:42him.
01:06:46And
01:06:46so we
01:06:46start the
01:06:47tenth
01:06:47round.
01:06:50I
01:06:50don't
01:06:51think
01:06:51that Ray
01:06:51could be
01:06:52good as
01:06:53fast as
01:06:53he did.
01:06:54He was
01:06:55seriously
01:06:55hurt.
01:06:55He
01:06:55was
01:06:56pretty
01:06:56lucid in
01:06:56his
01:06:56corner
01:06:57here
01:06:57between
01:06:57rounds
01:06:58but
01:06:58whether
01:06:58or
01:06:58not
01:06:58he's
01:06:58got
01:06:58anything
01:06:59left
01:06:59remains
01:07:01to be
01:07:01seen.
01:07:02Started
01:07:02off
01:07:02with
01:07:02the
01:07:02combination
01:07:03but
01:07:03didn't
01:07:03really
01:07:03hurt
01:07:04Holmes
01:07:04with
01:07:04it.
01:07:09There's
01:07:09a right
01:07:09hand by
01:07:10Holmes.
01:07:10Backs
01:07:10Bay right
01:07:11off him
01:07:11again.
01:07:23There's
01:07:23a left
01:07:23jab
01:07:24for
01:07:24home
01:07:24back in
01:07:24body.
01:07:26back in
01:07:27and
01:07:28he's
01:07:28getting
01:07:28his
01:07:28rhythm
01:07:29again.
01:07:36Bay
01:07:36now
01:07:36just
01:07:37trying
01:07:37to
01:07:37throw
01:07:37one
01:07:37punch
01:07:38and
01:07:39he's
01:07:40proven to
01:07:41Holmes
01:07:41before
01:07:42that he
01:07:42can't
01:07:42do
01:07:42it
01:07:42with
01:07:42one
01:07:42punch.
01:07:43he's
01:07:56just doing a workmanlike job here. It's just like a day at the beach.
01:07:58Well he's flat footed and that's power. He's come down off his toes now. I think now he wants to get this fight over with.
01:08:05When you slow down when you slow down when you slow down when you slow down when you get flat footed that's when your leverage really comes into play and it should be down on his flat feet because I think at this stage here he should be able to control and dominate this fight. The late rounds are always Larry Holm's round.
01:08:28This is when you cut the ring off also Barry.
01:08:35This is when you cut the ring off also Barry.
01:08:37This is when you cut the ring off also Barry.
01:08:38This is when you cut the ring off also Barry.
01:08:42Okay bring it up.
01:08:43Holmes is just not trying to waste any shots. He's just kind of looks to me like he's just taking his time just biding his time. He knows he's got his man beat. He doesn't want to get careless. He knows he's in there against the strong guy. The best word that comes to mind is workmanlike. He's just getting it done. He's not moving too far back.
01:08:56And he's not moving too far back now. You'll notice that. He's not moving too far back when Bay throws his punches. He's just staying there. And he's stepping in and Bay's punches are starting to hit him around the back of the head.
01:09:13There's a left hand. Back to the body.
01:09:15Holmes at very high percentage. There's a right hand. That could be the beginning of the end. Now let's see if Larry Holmes just tries to find one more shot. He's got his man hurt again. There's a combination. Bay looking for a place to fall down here. And Holmes may need one more.
01:09:31Holmes is on top of David Bay. Bay trying to grab on. Larry Holmes won't let him. Now we see some combination. A lot of pushes going on there. And this one is over. Carlos Padilla says enough is enough.
01:09:43And Larry Holmes has retained his heavyweight championship. Chalk up number 47. Larry fought a very, very smart fight. He took his time. He was hurt in the early rounds. Came back. Kept his head. And then dominated.
01:09:59Can't argue the fact that Larry Holmes has fought anybody who wants to step into the ring with him. He's fought everybody there is. The question is, what is there?
01:10:06Well, I think everyone now is just curious to see what Larry Holmes is going to do after his victory.
01:10:12Well, it would not be the first retirement announcement that Larry Holmes has made. He's made one to me on about eight different occasions, as a matter of fact. And he has said publicly, this will be it. This will be the last one. But you still have to feel, he always feels himself, that he has another hill to climb.
01:10:27Well, the fact of the matter is, Barry, what could possibly drive him is to surpass the record of Rocky Marciano.
01:10:35Let's take a look then at what was the punch that really started him going. And it was a really solid right hand.
01:10:41Well, the right hand was the key punch. And the most effective and devastating punch that Larry Holmes was able to land on David Bay. Here he works his jab. And Bay's just basically just falling apart here.
01:10:52At that point, Bay had no legs left. He was really almost looking for a place to fall down or at least hold on to Larry Holmes as he tried to do right there.
01:10:59Well, the uppercuts were doing a pretty good job. And that loop of my hand.
01:11:04You know, I think there might be those who might criticize Larry Holmes for not really going after him when he had him hurt seriously earlier as we take a look once more at the end of the end, if you will.
01:11:14And Larry Holmes, just a barrage of punches, getting his man in the corner. Carlos Bedelia will come into your picture in just a moment.
01:11:20He's behind Larry Holmes now, taking a good look. You can see him right in the corner of your screen.
01:11:23And he will step in in a moment and say, that's it. This one is over as David Bay really unable to fight back, just try to defend himself as best he could.
01:11:32Holmes opened him up right there. Still, Bedelia looking in very closely and one more right hand.
01:11:38And Carlos Bedelia says, that's it. This one is all over. So Larry Holmes makes it 47 straight.
01:11:43What I started to say before is that I really do feel that Holmes was in a position of, I don't want to waste any punches. I know I got the guy.
01:11:50And when I feel I really have him hurt, then I'll go after him. And that's what he did.
01:11:53Well, that is the answer for the guys to say, you know, why didn't Larry finish him off sooner when he had him hurt?
01:11:57David Bay remained a dangerous fighter.
01:12:00He possessed a big punch and Larry did be right there.
01:12:04Holmes did have him hurt early and did look as though he could put his man away.
01:12:08But he didn't want to be careless. There's a good look at the left eye of David Bay.
01:12:12Not anything that really had a profound effect on the fight at all.
01:12:15But as the fight went on, you had the feeling that I could have very seriously been swollen.
01:12:20And that would have affected the fight. Then he would not see the right hand, of course, if Larry Holmes coming.
01:12:24Well, Bay did put up a gallant show. He just played a lot of heart.
01:12:27But experience, I feel, was a key factor that played a major role now coming to this fight.
01:12:33Larry Merchant trying to make his way into the entourage of Larry Holmes.
01:12:36A lot of people around the champion as he looks on. Doesn't look particularly winded.
01:12:40It looked to me, as a matter of fact, like he could have easily gone to 15 rounds.
01:12:43He did seem very fit.
01:12:44Well, Larry trained for this fight because he knew what he was facing in David Bay.
01:12:49All right. Right now, let's go up to the ring announcer, Chuck Hull.
01:12:51We'll get the official decision. Chuck.
01:12:53The winner by TKO and still undefeated IBF heavyweight champion of the world, Larry Holmes.
01:12:58All right. Right now, let's go to our own Larry. Larry Merchant who is with the champion, Larry Holmes.
01:13:04The winner by a TKO and still undefeated IBF heavyweight champion of the world, Larry Holmes.
01:13:15All right, right now, let's go to our own Larry, Larry Merchant, who is with the champion, Larry Holmes.
01:13:21Larry, congratulations.
01:13:24It seems that you've offered...
01:13:26First, I'd like to say something.
01:13:29First, I'd like to say hi to my mom back home.
01:13:31Hi to my daughters, Mr. Lisa and Belinda.
01:13:36Hi, everybody, Larry Holmes coming to our end.
01:13:39Larry Holmes, round one.
01:13:41And Larry Holmes, John Hendricks, that's mine.
01:13:43I hope you're doing a good job back there, Jack, because we need the money because this is it.
01:13:49This is it.
01:13:50First, let's get to the fight.
01:13:52You've often said you don't want to fight any big, strong guys anymore.
01:13:55Did this guy give you any worry at all?
01:13:57Yeah, because he's no style.
01:13:59Very awkward dogfighter.
01:14:01You know, very strong and determined.
01:14:04Wanted to prove that he was worthy at 14 fights.
01:14:06He hurt you, it seemed, early in the fight.
01:14:09What did you do after that?
01:14:11He didn't hurt me bad.
01:14:12He hit me with a good shot.
01:14:14Kind of surprised me a little bit.
01:14:16And I knew what I had to do.
01:14:17Stay there in the middle and wear him down.
01:14:19Were you surprised he wasn't as reckless as you thought he might be?
01:14:22That he tried to box you and make you lead?
01:14:25No, he was reckless, Larry.
01:14:26He was very reckless.
01:14:27Because that's why it took me as long as it did to get to him.
01:14:31A boxer with right hands, left jabs, and whatnot.
01:14:36There are fighters that I can take.
01:14:38But this guy was throwing any old punch like Boone Crush and Smith.
01:14:41He didn't know where he was coming from.
01:14:43So it made him a good fighter.
01:14:44All right, you said, this is it.
01:14:46Now, you've often said this was your last fight five or six times.
01:14:51Give us your interpretation now of what this is it means.
01:14:54This is it means I'll retire.
01:14:56If I don't get an offer from Michael Spinks by end of April, I'll retire.
01:15:06But that offer got to come from Michael Spinks as a reasonable amount of $4 million or Jerry Cooney for $25 million.
01:15:15I don't need the money anymore.
01:15:16Aren't you pricing yourself out and, in effect, retiring when you ask for that kind of money from those fighters?
01:15:21Oh, yeah, I am.
01:15:22And, you know, I'm looking forward to my retirement on June the 9th.
01:15:27I've fought a lot.
01:15:28And I'm really looking forward to retiring.
01:15:31But if somebody's crazy enough to come with $3 to $4 million for a lightweight like the winner of Hagelin and Hearns or the winner of anybody lighter than a heavyweight, I'll retire.
01:15:41Thank you, Larry.
01:15:42And now back to Ray and Barry.
01:15:44Okay, thank you very much.
01:15:45And congratulations.
01:15:46And that, I would interpret, just to go through all of that and interpret it, I would say he hasn't retired.
01:15:51Well, I would fight guys that fly weights and light fly weights.
01:15:54I would fight.
01:15:54I would love to.
01:15:55I would never retire.
01:15:56All right.
01:15:56I personally, and I think Larry Holmes also saying, as we got Ollie Dunlap's arm into that.
01:16:01Ollie's always wanted to get on television here.
01:16:03He, of course, is Ray Leonard's road manager.
01:16:05Now he's going to ask for bigger bucks, too.
01:16:07But speaking of asking for bigger bucks, that's exactly what the champion seems to be doing right now.
01:16:12He seems to be looking for the big fight, and you have to feel that there will be more from Larry Holmes.
01:16:16For sure.
01:16:17I think Larry's going to exist as long as he still has the same spirit.
01:16:20And the competitive fight.
01:16:22In one word, give me your evaluation of Larry Holmes tonight.
01:16:26Great.
01:16:26That was easy enough.
01:16:28And so, be sure to join us in May when HBO Sports presents a candid look at the world of sports.

01:18:45No, you'd all like to die if I sang.
01:18:47Okay, Bay will be in in about 15 or 20 minutes.
01:18:51I would expect Holmes would be in after that.
01:18:54He takes a little bit longer, you know, afterwards.
01:18:59Sam?
01:19:01Sam Skinner.
