Sharif Bogere takes on Francsico Contreras in a battle of undefeated Lightweights on Shobox The New Generation
Transcript
00:00...himself, Sharif the Lion Boqueray is ready to make his unique ring entrance and put his undefeated mark on the line
00:06against fellow unbeaten lightweight Francisco Contreras.
00:11And it is Contreras that we meet first.
00:18The 27-year-old hails from the Dominican Republic and now calls Irvington, New Jersey home.
00:24A tall, rangy fighter who likes to drop the big right hand, Contreras has built his record on limited opposition.
00:30He can punch and 10 of his 13 KOs have come in the first two rounds.
00:34We saw him early last year right here on Showbox when he faced Juan Castaneda in an impressive debut.
00:41Now, before you can even get your popcorn ready, Contreras unleashed a combo that would end the fight at 98 seconds of the first round.
00:49Yeah, one minute, 38 seconds into the fight. It was over. It seemed like it finished a lot quicker than that in reality.
00:55He's won three fights since, but this will be just his second start in the last 15 months.
01:00He says he prefers to fight someone who will ball with him rather than box.
01:03Tonight, he may get his wish.
01:06Francisco Contreras, 16-0, 13 by knockouts.
01:10What's behind the numbers, Steve?
01:11Well, Kurt, Contreras has been playing catch-up for a 27-year-old fighter.
01:15His total of 46 rounds is very low.
01:18But a note, nine first-run KOs are largely responsible for that skimpy total.
01:23Where's the moat?
01:24Contreras' win over Castaneda was an eye-opener, but he failed to build momentum.
01:28The records of his opponents since then, not so hot.
01:3112-11, 7-3-3, and 20-17-3.
01:36And tepid tune-up.
01:37Contreras is coming off a sixth-round win against a fighter who had lost his previous seven fights.
01:42That's hardly what I call ideal preparation for the biggest bout of his career.
01:46And now, Sharif Bocairé and his unique ring interest.
02:08I thought that was hitting the Camacho for him.
02:11He is a showman.
02:24This place is turning into a zoo.
02:27Well, he says he's a caged lion waiting to be uncaged.
02:31And that's what happens before he takes the ring.
02:36He is brought in by a group of guys in a cage with an actual lion's pelt of a lion that was killed in Africa on his body.
02:47Hey, what do you expect from a guy called Vegas Home, right?
02:49Right.
02:50Born in Uganda, Bocairé began drawing attention for coming into the ring like this in a cage and wearing a lion's head and skin draped over his body.
02:59But it's been his work between the ropes that's actually kept people talking.
03:02A five-time African amateur champion, Bocairé came into the U.S. and turned pro back in 2008.
03:09And he's displayed an aggressive style and punishing left hook ever since.
03:12He took a huge leap up in opposition.
03:15In his last fight in May right here on Showbox, facing Ray Beltran, Manny Pacquiao's chief sparring partner.
03:22It was a grueling, physical fight.
03:24Beltran applied constant pressure throughout.
03:26Both got as good as they gave, and about plagued by headbutts, leaving both battered and bloody.
03:32In the end, though, Bocairé would successfully navigate the 10-round distance for the first time
03:35and earn a very close but unanimous decision and, more importantly, invaluable experience.
03:41Cherie Bocairé turns 23 tomorrow and would love nothing more than to celebrate early by keeping his record unplemished.
03:47He currently stands at 20-0 with 12 KOs.
03:51Let's go behind the numbers, Steve.
03:53Well, Kurt, a monstrous step.
03:54Bocairé's Showbox win over Beltran was huge.
03:57He faced his toughest opponent to date.
03:59He overcame a bad cut.
04:00He gutted out a win, and he went 10 rounds for the first time.
04:04Early power.
04:05Bocairé's history suggests that if he doesn't overwhelm you early, he's probably not going to get you late.
04:10Ten of his 12 stoppage wins have come in the first two rounds.
04:13And facing vets, Bocairé's a young lion, but his prey has been very experienced.
04:18His five most recent opponents averaged 37 fights.
04:21Two good young prospects, both undefeated.
04:26It is fight time here on Showtime.
04:28Let the Showbox begin.
04:3020-0 Cherie Bocairé and 16-0 Francisco Contreras at our main event.

05:59This is the Showbox Main Event of the Evening.
06:04Ten rounds of boxing for the NABO Lightweight Championship.
06:11Introducing first, he'll be fighting out of the blue corner.
06:15He entered the ring wearing white trimmed in black, and he weighed in at 135 pounds.
06:20His professional record.
06:22He is unbeaten with 16 victories, 13 big wins by a knockout.
06:27Originally from the Romana Dominican Republic, he now fights out of Irvington, New Jersey.
06:34Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the challenger and undefeated Francisco Contreras.
06:45And across the ring, fighting out of the red corner.
06:48He's wearing the jungle print trunks, and he weighed in at 135 pounds.
06:53He has a perfect professional record, consisting of 20 victories, no losses, including 12 wins by a knockout.
07:03Originally from Kampala, Uganda, he now lives in fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada.
07:09Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the undefeated, current, and defending NABO,
07:16lightweight champion, Sharif the Lion, Bulgari!
07:31Good Christmas.
07:36Turn your ass and pay for the demands.
07:37Good luck.
07:38It's going to work.
07:38Is that woman in the ring with Bulgari having a good hair day or a bad hair day?
07:44I'm not sure, but the thinking going in is that this is a typical tall fighter, short fighter matchup.
07:50But you see, Contreras' reach advantage is only an inch.
07:54Still, look for Bulgari to apply pressure and try to get close.
07:57Rules, same as first fight, no standing in, no three knockdown.
08:00Only the ref, Jane Nadee, can stop the fight.
08:02Can't be saved by the bell in any round.
08:04And the accident at the foul rule, should the fight end because of the foul?
08:07Before four, no decision.
08:08After that, we go to the cards.
08:09It was a long time ago when Contreras took the ring.
08:13We'll see how his body's doing.
08:16He had to stand there through that long ring walk of Bulgari.
08:21And now, finally ready for round one.
08:23We talked to him about having to do that, and his trainer, Valentin Contreras, no relation,
08:30says that he showed him the tape so that he would be mentally prepared to not lose focus
08:35between the time he took the ring and the time Bulgari took the ring.
08:40In terms of amateur experience, Bulgari, an African champ,
08:44fought in the World Championships in 07 and present.
08:46Contreras, however, six wins over the Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz from the DR.
08:51And pro experience, you see that Bulgari, 71 rounds to only 46 to Contreras.
08:58Contreras has a lot of early knockouts.
09:00Yeah, both these guys like to get busy early.
09:02You can see Contreras, the taller fighter.
09:05He's got 10 of his 13 knockouts have come in the first two rounds,
09:09so obviously he's aggressive early.
09:11And I would say Bulgari's aggressive early,
09:13but he's really aggressive throughout the entire fight.
09:15You've seen it already on display.
09:18Likes to keep busy.
09:19Well, here's a young fighter in Bulgari that has a big following already.
09:25You know, his handlers has all the confidence in the world in this guy.
09:27They feel like that last fight was just an off night.
09:30That's why they have the confidence to put him in there with a guy like Contreras,
09:33because they feel confident that he's going to get the job done
09:36and he's going to get it done in fashion.
09:38Well, you can see he doesn't mind getting in close with the taller fighter.
09:44Trying to keep that distance short.
09:46And that would usually be the strategy,
09:49but Bulgari's trainer, Kenny Adams, told us he thinks that Contreras really gives you that anyway.
09:54Gives away his height advantage.
09:56Let's you fight close because he likes to fight close.
09:59Let's see if that pans out.
10:00Yeah, I don't agree with that.
10:01I think Contreras, in the fights I've seen,
10:03and he likes distance and he likes to throw straight punches.
10:06He's a long-on-fighter.
10:07The height difference between these two is really pronounced.
10:09They're almost four inches, and it looks to be even more than that.
10:14And I agree with Steve.
10:15Right now, he's fighting beautifully.
10:17He's fighting tall.
10:18And, you know, he's not giving Bulgari the opportunity to counterpunch right now.
10:23So he's controlling the first in the early round right now.
10:27You can see Bulgari miss with a couple of big punches.
10:30And that right hand that he's winging, he's done that twice.
10:32That does not look good for a fighter that's trying to be a contender.
10:36You just don't throw overhand rights like that.
10:39No power and just winging it.
10:40Stop! Stop! Let go! Stop!
10:42Jane Aiden breaking him up.
10:45And one punch to look for from Contreras.
10:48As Bulgari gets close, Contreras does have a good left hook to the body.
10:51We've seen it once so far.
10:53Look for it again.
10:57Bulgari trying to stay in close.
11:00Stop! Stop!
11:02Maybe warning him.
11:07We're holding!
11:08If there are too many more collisions like the one we just saw,
11:10we're going to see blood again,
11:11which we saw in the first Bulgari fight on Showbite.
11:19All right, Steve.
11:20What you're doing, you're throwing a jab and you're leaning back.
11:23Throw the jab and drive the right hand right through
11:25and go right to the target.
11:27You understand what I'm saying?
11:28You with me on that?
11:30You understand what I'm saying?
11:31One more time.
11:31I want you to jab, jab, jab, step to it.
11:34Drive the right hand back with the hook.
11:36Quick, hook!
11:37Mopi.
11:37Mopi.
11:38Mopi.
11:38Mopi.
11:39Mopi.

11:52Mopi.
11:53Mopi.
11:53Mopi.
11:53Mopi.
11:53Mopi.
11:53Mopi.
11:54One by one, every round, one by one.
11:59Be sure what you're doing.
12:02Okay, go up, go up.
12:04Give me some message.
12:06Samson Leck was such a normal interpreter there.
12:08No.
12:10Advisor to Sergio Martinez,
12:11one of the best three or four fighters in the world.
12:15Well, we've got two unbeaten prospects
12:16going at it right now as we get ready for round two.
12:19Both came out aggressive in that opening round,
12:24but on my scorecard, at least I gave it to Contreras.
12:27I did as well.
12:28I thought it was pretty close.
12:29Good left hook there by Contreras.
12:31That's the second time Contreras has landed
12:33that left hook and close.
12:34I gave the round to Contreras,
12:36so he's down two with the entrance like that.
12:41It didn't seem to affect Contreras at all.
12:43His concentration was there indeed.
12:45You can see Bouguere kind of lunging forward
12:49to try and keep close to try and keep the pressure on.
12:52And Contreras doing a good job
12:53of just kind of sidestepping a lot of that.
12:55And again, he missed with a straight right hand.
12:57He's winging it.
12:58It's just not right now getting there.
12:59He needs to step up a little bit,
13:01double jab to reach in.
13:03Yeah.
13:03It was a good combination delivered by Bouguere.
13:06And now he tries to bring the heat again,
13:08and he gets caught up.
13:10That's what Bouguere needs to do.
13:11He's capable of throwing 100 punches around,
13:14and he wants to try to overwhelm Contreras,
13:16take Contreras out of that smooth boxing mode.
13:19We have seen Bouguere fight here on Showbox before.
13:22He does not tire.
13:24He can throw 100 punches around
13:26and still be going in the tent.
13:28You just saw something Kenny Adams didn't like.
13:30Bouguere throwing that right hand,
13:32real looping, real circular and wide,
13:35and he wants him throwing that straight.
13:36Two brawling now,
13:44and Bouguere getting the best of it.
13:46For a second, Contreras is here from back.
13:49And again, their heads are very,
13:51they're coming very close to classing,
13:53so let's keep an eye on that.
13:54And it looks like Bouguere is the one that's,
13:56you know, making that head come close like that
13:59because he's out of control
14:01when he's throwing those punches.
14:02Well, and that's what we saw
14:03in his last fight here on Showbox.
14:06Cut above both thighs,
14:07but Ray Beltran, his opponent,
14:08was cut as well
14:09due to a number of head classes.
14:13Bouguere now up against the rope
14:15but still fighting.
14:17He doesn't slow down at all.
14:19Stop!
14:19Turn him, turn him!
14:22This looks like it has the potential
14:23to get a little nasty on the inside.
14:25Both fighters are fighting at a fast pace,
14:33and I noticed that in the fighters' meeting,
14:35Contreras looked a little drawn to me.
14:37I don't know if, you know,
14:39he's struggled with weight,
14:41but he didn't look really fresh.
14:43So I'm trying to see,
14:44can he keep this pace up
14:46if the fights go five, six, seven rounds?
14:49He got caught with a couple of left hands
14:51while he was in the grasps of Bouguere.
14:54And this time gets rid of the ropes by Bouguere.
14:58And now comes out fighting with the body punches.
15:02You're right, this may turn nasty at some point.
15:04Yeah, and I think Bouguere's been very successful
15:06this round in making Contreras very uncomfortable.
15:09Oh, he catches him again with a couple of left hands
15:12at the end of the round
15:14while he was holding him around the head.
15:20What's going on?
15:21What do you want me to do?
15:22Well, no one gets you closer
15:25to America's number one spectator sport
15:27than inside NASCAR with season 10
15:29right here on Showtime.
15:40Action from a spirited round two.
15:43Is there an elbow in here?
15:44Yep, right there, you see Bouguere with the elbow.
15:49And Contreras was not happy about it.
15:51We almost had a Victor Ortiz
15:52protect yourself at all times moment there as well.
15:56And I think that definitely speaks to my point
16:00about Contreras being made uncomfortable by Bouguere.
16:04And I looked at that replay, he didn't have him around the head,
16:13but he did kind of catch him with an elbow
16:15right there at the end of the round.
16:16As we start round number three,
16:18and you used the right word, spirited.
16:20First two rounds,
16:22each fighter coming out aggressive,
16:23each pushing the pace,
16:24and now Bouguere at the end of that last round
16:27seemed to be in control a little bit more
16:28because he had Contreras off balance.
16:32Contreras answers back.
16:34Bouguere trying to keep the pressure up.
16:37Stop!
16:38Look where Bouguere's head is on the inside.
16:40You're holding, you're holding, you're holding.
16:41Sure he's holding.
16:42Gen 80 says, you're holding to Contreras.
16:44He's holding because he's getting butted.
16:47And both of these fighters seem to have
16:48a pretty decent style,
16:50but it seemed like they get a little bit out of control,
16:52and we see these moments where it seems like,
16:55you know, the action is not as good as it could be.
16:57Let's hope both of them settle down
16:59and fight their fight.
17:01Yeah, they're both throwing a lot of punches,
17:02but they're not necessarily controlled punches.
17:06Good hook by Contreras.
17:08Bouguere's in rhythm now, though.
17:12Pushing the action.
17:13Got Contreras up against the ropes,
17:15and there they go again.
17:16Tied up.
17:17J and 80 forced to break him up.
17:20I mentioned in the tale of the tape
17:22that Bouguere has only a one-inch,
17:24one-inch reach disadvantage.
17:25If you didn't know better,
17:27you'd think Contreras had about a six-inch reach advantage
17:29the way the fight is going with Bouguere jumping in
17:31and lunging, and Contreras backing up
17:33and trying to use that jab.
17:35Well, he's just got a much longer body as well.
17:39Midway through round three of this ten-round fight,
17:42Bouguere now pushed down by Contreras.
17:46Kurt Menifee, Steve Farhood,
17:47and Antonio Tarver with you here.
17:49Our main event on Showbox,
17:50undefeated fighter Sharif Bouguere
17:53at 20-0 in the black trunks
17:55against Francisco Contreras.
17:5716-0 with 13 knockouts in the white,
17:59and now down.
18:05And not moving.
18:07That was a poke that landed directly behind the head.
18:10He didn't see it, and it...
18:11It's a knockout.
18:13Wow, that one came out of nowhere.
18:19Sharif Bouguere with a third-round knockout
18:22of Francisco Contreras.
18:26A punch that we didn't see,
18:28and I don't know if Contreras really saw it,
18:32but he's out.
18:33And Colonel definitely didn't see it.
18:34He is out.
18:36And so Sharif Bouguere remains unbeaten
18:39with a surprising knockout.
18:41One, two, three, two, one.
18:51We'll take a look at the replays
18:53as they attend to Francisco Contreras.
19:00Certainly want to make sure he's okay,
19:01but from what I saw,
19:02I thought it landed in the back of the head.
19:05Clean, clean shot.
19:07We'll take a look at the replay
19:08and see if we can figure it out
19:09because we didn't see it.
19:12And as we say, you can tell.
19:13Wow.
19:14The Contreras had no idea
19:14where that punch came from.
19:15All of a sudden, he just went down.
19:19All right, I think we're going to see it now.
19:21Thank God for replay.
19:24Here it is.
19:27And, yeah, that's...
19:30Did it hit him in the back of the head,
19:32or did it hit him off the shoulder
19:33and then maybe deflect onto the head?
19:36We're going to take some more looks.
19:38But clearly, Contreras turned away,
19:42and that's a key point.
19:45Well, you know what?
19:45You can see that Bouguere's right forearm
19:48made contact with the arm, the shoulder.
19:51But where did the glove land?
19:55Well, it hit him in the back of the head,
19:57and you never know how those punches will affect you.
19:59The equilibrium is back there,
20:01and especially if you don't see it coming.
20:02It's one of those punches that can turn your lights out.
20:07Boy, it's...
20:09I tell you what,
20:10he caught him with the right hand
20:11on the side of the neck.
20:13Watch this, this right hand.
20:16And now it backs him up
20:17and forces Contreras to turn around.
20:19Maybe he was actually injured by that
20:20because that second punch
20:21looks like it connected in the shoulder
20:23and never really caught him in the head.
20:25Well, I tell you what the key point overall is here
20:28is Contreras got hit
20:30either in the back of the neck or the shoulder,
20:32but his body was turned away from Bouguere.
20:35Had he voluntarily turned his body away,
20:37or did Bouguere move him in that direction?
20:39Because if he turned his body away himself,
20:42then it's not an illegal punch.
20:44Let's take one more look here.
20:48You can see Bouguere overcome with emotion
20:50after this fight.
20:53We talked about maybe Antonio said
20:54maybe it was the first right hand
20:55that did the damage.
20:57Here it is.
20:57This is what I think.
20:58See, it catches him on the neck,
21:00and then Contreras will turn around.
21:02I think he may be a little disoriented right now
21:05because this one catches him on the shoulder,
21:07never touches his neck.
21:08Yeah, I agree with you.
21:09Looking at that angle,
21:10it certainly looks like the glove
21:11did not come into play against the neck.
21:15It bounced off the shoulder,
21:17which leads you to believe
21:18that that first right hand
21:19might have been the one that did the damage.
21:21The first right hand landed,
21:23but at the same time,
21:24the right hand,
21:25the last right hand,
21:25did raise his shoulder,
21:27but I think it did get a piece
21:28of his back of his head.
21:29Deflecting?
21:30Deflected off the back of his head,
21:31and like I said,
21:32when you don't see that coming
21:33in the back of the head,
21:34it can be effective.
21:39Strange ending.
21:39But we saw it coming, didn't we?
21:41We had a feeling
21:41something strange was going to happen.
21:43Well, Contreras has yet to get up.
21:44He's still lying prone
21:47there on the corner of the apron.
21:55So, of course,
21:56the doctors will take care of him
21:57and make sure that he is okay.
22:01And right now,
22:02you can see this is an emotional night
22:03for Bouguere.
22:04I mean, here's a guy
22:04who's trying to make that next step,
22:06and we talked about it in the open,
22:08go from being a prospect
22:09to being a contender.
22:11A third-round knockout
22:12of another undefeated fighter
22:13will help that cause.
22:14So, no doubt about that.
22:17I'm thinking he may be
22:19overcome with emotions
22:20because he's not sure
22:21if this fighter is seriously hurt
22:23or damaged or what.
22:24It's just sportsmanship
22:26on his behalf.
22:28Well, good for Contreras
22:30that we're in Nevada.
22:31This is the best boxing state
22:33for this type of situation.
22:39And he is still down
22:41in the corner.
22:42Doctors are attending to him.
22:43But we can only figure
22:48that the punch
22:49that left Contreras this way
22:51was the right hand on the chin
22:53and not...
22:54Well, Antonio,
22:55maybe you disagree, huh?
22:56I disagree totally
22:57because I know
22:57how effective a punch
22:59in the back of the head can be.
23:00No, he did not land it flush.
23:02But you see the power
23:04that he threw
23:04with that right hand.
23:05It did graze the shoulder,
23:07but the top of the back of the head,
23:08that's not a powerful punch
23:10to stop him
23:11or knock him out cold.
23:12This punch,
23:13you can't see it.
23:14It did graze the back of his head
23:16with power.
23:16You think so?
23:16I don't know.
23:17I definitely feel that way.
23:20Well, the result,
23:21whether it was the first punch
23:22or the second,
23:24was a third-round knockout.
23:27And while they attended Contreras
23:28over there in the corner,
23:29we just want to remind you
23:30that when we were done here
23:31with Showbox,
23:32it's another edition
23:33of Inside the NFL
23:34as the guys will break down
23:36week four
23:37and look ahead to week five
23:38in the National Football League.
23:39Of course,
23:41everyone's concerned right now
23:43with Francisco Contreras.
23:44Yeah, that's the most
23:44important thing, of course,
23:45and he's really been
23:46pretty much motionless
23:47over there.
23:48They've taken off his shoes
23:49and the doctors
23:50are still attending to him.
23:52But we talk about
23:53the legality of the punch,
23:55and Tony and I
23:56are arguing about it,
23:57and we've had 16 replays
23:58to look at,
23:59so that tells you
24:00how difficult
24:00the situation it is.
24:01Immobilize the neck,
24:02of course,
24:02the very first thing
24:03they're going to do.
24:08One would hope
24:09that's a precautionary
24:11measure for safety.
24:18And the fact that
24:19they're not giving him
24:20oxygen is a good sign.
24:28Of course,
24:28before you move anybody,
24:29you want to make sure
24:30everything's fine.
24:32That seems to be,
24:33hopefully,
24:34what is going on
24:34over in the corner.
24:36You saw Bouguere
24:37went over
24:37just to take a look
24:39earlier and check on him,
24:41and they told him,
24:42not yet.
24:42And you can see
24:43Contreras moving about
24:44down there on the ground
24:46as they bring in
24:49the stretcher
24:49to keep him mobilized.
24:54He still looks to be
24:54in a bit of pain,
24:55though.
24:55Yes.
24:55One of the strangest
25:00finishes we've ever
25:01seen on this show,
25:02I'll tell you that.
25:04Well,
25:04strange because
25:05we're still not
25:06after watching
25:0620 replays,
25:07100% clear
25:09is exactly
25:09what happened
25:11and how this fight
25:12ended.
25:13But obviously,
25:14it was a devastating
25:14punch or series of punches,
25:16whichever way it was,
25:17from Bouguere
25:18that incapacitated
25:19Contreras.
25:24And in case
25:24you're wondering,
25:25Bouguere still in the ring,
25:26obviously waiting
25:27for the official announcement.
25:28He can't leave right now.
25:30So even though
25:31he's concerned
25:32and everyone's concerned
25:33for Contreras' well-being,
25:34until Contreras
25:35is removed from the ring,
25:37they can't make
25:37the announcement.
25:39And Bouguere
25:39can't leave the ring
25:40until they make
25:41the announcement.
25:41This is a lion.
25:44Talk about lion,
25:45this is it.
25:45Well, while we wait,
25:47another reminder
25:47that in December,
25:48the Super 6 World Boxing Classic
25:49comes to its dramatic conclusion
25:51right here on Showtime.
25:53Andre Ward
25:53and Carl Frotch
25:55will determine
25:56who is the best
25:57168 pounds.
25:59The Super 6 World Boxing Classic
26:00has tested
26:01boxing's elite.
26:05Skilled warriors
26:06pushed to their limits
26:07and beyond.
26:10Now,
26:10just two fighters remain.
26:13Carl Frotch
26:13and Andre Ward
26:15both stand as giants
26:16among men.
26:17Dominating performance
26:19by Carl Frotch.
26:20Unrivaled
26:21as the two greatest
26:22super middleweights
26:22in the world.
26:23Who would have thought
26:24Andre Ward
26:25would be pitching
26:25a shout-out?
26:27But only one
26:27can be called
26:28the best.
26:30It all comes down
26:31to this.
26:33Ward
26:33versus Frotch.
26:35The Super 6
26:36World Boxing Classic
26:37Final.
26:38Saturday,
26:39December 17th
26:39at 9.
26:40Then Strikeforce
26:41returns when
26:42Gilbert Melendez
26:43takes on Jorge Masvidal
26:45only on Showtime.
26:51Meanwhile,
26:52back here on Showbox,
26:53Francisco Contreras
26:54being strapped into
26:57that stretcher
26:57and taken out of the ring
26:58after being knocked out
26:59in the third round
27:00by Sharif Bougare.
27:04See,
27:04the doctor's taking
27:05every precaution
27:06they can
27:06to make sure
27:07he is immobilized
27:08before being put
27:09in the ambulance.
27:17Antonio,
27:17you know,
27:18I mean,
27:18this is a scene
27:18that no boxer
27:20wants to see
27:21another fighter
27:21in this position.
27:23You want the knockout,
27:24you want the victory,
27:24but you don't want
27:25to truly hurt your opponent.
27:26No,
27:27you don't.
27:28And, you know,
27:28let's hope and pray
27:29that he's okay
27:31and that he doesn't
27:32have any lingering effects
27:33from this knockout.
27:37Well,
27:37the thing is
27:38that we have seen him
27:38moving around
27:39and moving about.
27:40He appears to be
27:40in a lot of pain
27:41as they have him
27:42strapped down
27:43and they're taking him
27:44to the ambulance.
27:45They'll take him
27:45to a local hospital here.
27:47And as you said,
27:47our thoughts and prayers
27:48certainly with
27:49Francisco Contreras
27:50tonight.
27:50While they'll make
27:55everything official,
27:57Sharif Bougare winning
27:58on a knockout,
27:59but this ended up
28:00to Jake Gutierrez
28:01for the official
28:01announcement.
28:05Ladies and gentlemen,
28:07referee Jay Nady
28:08stops this bout
28:09at 2 minutes,
28:101 seconds
28:10of the third round
28:11as he reaches
28:12the count of 10.
28:13The winner
28:14by knockout victory,
28:15he is still undefeated
28:17and still the NABO
28:19lightweight champion,
28:21Sharif the Lion,
28:24Bougare!
28:29You can see
28:30Bougare is happy
28:31that he won,
28:31but a lot of the steam
28:33is taken out
28:33because of the injury
28:34to Contreras.
28:35Because as we were
28:36just talking about,
28:36nobody wants to see
28:37that happen to an opponent,
28:38so it's kind of hard
28:39for him to celebrate
28:40like he normally would
28:41having a third round
28:42knockout.
28:43Well,
28:43and when you look at,
28:44you know,
28:45they're happy with the result.
28:46That was the result
28:47that they were looking for.
28:49But then when you put
28:50the fight on the microscope,
28:52you know,
28:52it wasn't a one-punch
28:53knockout to the chin.
28:54It wasn't a devastating,
28:56you know,
28:57where he devastated
28:58the guy
28:58and blew him out.
29:00It was a punch
29:01that we still
29:01are at odds
29:02with how it happened.
29:04So, you know,
29:04give him credit.
29:05It wasn't an illegal punch.
29:07The fighter turned
29:08his back to him
29:09and possibly caused him
29:10to hit him
29:11in the back of the head
29:12and the results are KO.
29:13He deserves to be proud
29:15of this decision.
29:15But still,
29:16I feel he needs
29:17a lot of work.
29:18Still a growing
29:19in the growing process.
29:21I don't think
29:21they're ready for anybody
29:22in the top 15 right now.
29:24I think they still
29:24need to take their time
29:25and let him grow.
29:26Well,
29:27this was another
29:27clear step for him
29:28as he runs his record
29:29to 21-0
29:30and gets his 13th
29:32knockout
29:32in the process.
29:33Why don't we send it
29:34up to the ring
29:34where Steve Farhook
29:36will have a chance
29:36to talk to the
29:37victorious
29:38Bougueret.
29:40I guess I apologize.
29:42He's got a report.
29:42My apologies.
29:43Let's just send it up
29:43to Steve.
29:44Steve?
29:44Yeah, it's just me.
29:46I just did speak
29:46to Keith Kaiser,
29:47the executive director
29:48of the Nevada State
29:49Athletic Commission.
29:50He told me that
29:51according to Jane 80,
29:52the first punch,
29:53the one that landed
29:54on the chin,
29:54was the punch
29:55that did the damage.
29:56The second punch
29:57was legal
29:58because,
29:59according to Jane 80,
30:00Contreras turned away
30:01from the punch.
30:02But the punch
30:02that left Contreras prone
30:03and virtually out
30:04on the canvas
30:05according to Keith Kaiser
30:06was the first punch
30:07to the chin.
30:09Back to you, Kurt.
30:10All right.
30:11Thanks a lot, Steve.
30:12And here it is.
30:13That first punch,
30:14the one that grazed
30:14his neck,
30:16was the one
30:16that did the damage.
30:23Back to the head,
30:24but it looked to me
30:25more like just
30:26in the shoulder,
30:27but the damage
30:27had already been done
30:28at that stage
30:29and Contreras went down.
30:30Bougueret had the knockout.
30:31So Antonio is
30:34pretty much like
30:35we thought there
30:36after taking a look
30:36at the replay,
30:37or at least I thought
30:38after taking a look
30:39at the replay,
30:39according to Jane 80.
30:41He's going to give him
30:42credit for the knockout
30:43happening with that
30:44punch that grazed the neck
30:45and really forced Contreras
30:47to turn his back.
30:48In the end,
30:48it winds up being
30:49a knockout for Bougueret
30:50who runs his record
30:51to 21-0
30:52and, you know,
30:53takes a step forward.
30:54One of the things
30:55that we talked about
30:56and that he talked
30:56with us about
30:57is trying to find a way
30:58to develop more power.
30:59He's worked with
31:00the strength and conditioning coach
31:01and it looked like
31:02tonight it paid off
31:03in a strange way,
31:04but it paid off.
31:05Yeah, strange way
31:05to say the least.
31:06I mean,
31:07personally with all my experience,
31:08I just didn't see
31:09where the first right hand
31:11grazed him
31:11did that type of damage.
31:13You know,
31:13I'll go out on a limb
31:14and say that.
31:15I think it was the punch
31:15that he didn't see
31:16in back of the head
31:17which caused a concussion
31:19at any time.
31:20I'm not saying
31:20that that was the punch
31:21that KO'd him.
31:22I'm just saying
31:22I don't think the right hand
31:24caused that much damage.
31:26You know,
31:26it was a grazing blow.
31:28Whichever one it was,
31:30it was the one
31:30that wound up
31:31getting him the knockout.
31:32He keeps his record perfect
31:33and moves on.
31:34And one thing
31:34that Antonio spoke about
31:35while you were in the ring
31:36there, Steve,
31:37is that this was a good win
31:38for Bo Garek.
31:39Absolutely no question about it.
31:40He got the knockout,
31:41but is he ready?
31:43Antonio doesn't think he is
31:44to move in
31:44and start fighting
31:45a top 15,
31:46top 10 fighter yet
31:47with what little bit
31:47we saw tonight.
31:48Well,
31:49he certainly did
31:49everything that could
31:50have been expected
31:51of tonight scoring
31:52a knockout in the third round.
31:53That's a positive.
31:54Actually,
31:54I was very disappointed
31:55in Contreras' performance
31:56and as a result of that
31:57and how Contreras fought,
31:59I'm a little less impressed
32:00with Bo Garek's win
32:01than I might have been otherwise.
32:03So,
32:03is he ready for a top 10 guy?
32:05I'd pick him carefully,
32:06but yeah,
32:07I think he is.
32:07Even though he's a very young,
32:08lightweight,
32:09I don't think there's a point.
32:10He's ranked pretty high
32:11in the alphabets
32:11for what that's worth
32:12and I do think
32:14that he needs to step it up
32:15and be pushed
32:16a little bit harder.
32:16He wasn't pushed at all tonight.
32:18Well,
32:18he got the victory tonight
32:19nonetheless,
32:19no matter how it happened
32:20and he will move on
32:21and keep his record unbeaten.
32:23Well,
32:24we had another fighter
32:24keep his record unbeaten
32:26in our opening tonight
32:27here on Showbox.
32:29In our opening fight,
32:30Jermel Charlo gets another win,
32:32this time by unanimous decision
32:34over Francisco Contreras.
32:37Kurt,
32:37Jermel Charlo signed
32:38with Golden Boy Promotions
32:40at the age of 17.
32:41Tonight,
32:42another key step
32:43in the maturation process.
32:45Time remains on this kid's side.
32:46He is now 16-0.
32:48Sharif Bouguere,
32:4921-0
32:50after getting the strange
32:51third-round knockout
32:52of Francisco Contreras.
32:55Well, Kurt,
32:56Bouguere now a legit contender.
32:58Well,
32:58before tonight,
32:59he was in the neighborhood.
33:00Now,
33:01I'd say he's at the doorstep
33:02and he's knocking pretty loudly
33:03on that door.
33:05And so,
33:06that'll do it
33:06for another edition
