00:01:12He's got to start acting like the champion, inflicting punishment.
00:01:16He's bigger, I mean, he's not bigger, but he's tougher, and he's a more solid guy with harder punching.

00:02:16rated number one by the WBA, looking to become the first junior middleweight champ from Panama
00:02:20since the man Ferdie just talked to, Roberto Duran, in 83 and 84.

00:02:29Makes his way in behind his training team, headed up by Roberto Garibaldi.
00:02:36Ruben Gomez also a part of it.
00:02:38Luis Spada, also his manager, also manages Roberto Duran.
00:02:41Luis Spada holding the ropes together has been in over 600 championship fights with his fighters.
00:02:47This guy manages every champion.
00:02:49And it comes out of South America, I think.
00:02:51Well, one of those guys, Jones, who looked good against unrecognizable names,
00:02:55fighting mostly in his native Panama or Venezuela.
00:02:58But when it came down to really stepping it up, he rose to the occasion against world champion
00:03:02Laurent Bedwani this past February.
00:03:04And, Ferdie, it was an impressive performance.
00:03:06And he obviously earned the rematch.
00:03:09Oh, he earned it, huh?
00:03:10He earned the title.
00:03:11I mean, the rematch is kind of a consolation prize.
00:03:14You know, he comes from a country that produces a huge amount of champs.
00:03:17A little tiny country, but everybody comes out of there fighting.
00:03:20So, everybody's listening in Panama.
00:03:22Today, it's the next champion up.
00:03:24The next guy they're going to bring in is Jones.
00:03:26And they're going to be waiting, and he loves it.
00:03:28He wants all the attention.
00:03:30He wants all the pressure on him.
00:03:31And he looks like he's bulked up, too.

00:03:47former silver medalist at the 88 Seoul Olympics,
00:03:49his third defense of the WBA junior middleweight title,
00:03:53and he has no towels underneath.

00:03:57I think somebody translated Bobby and you and I comment to him.
00:04:01He was not too happy with us at the fighter meetings.
00:04:05He's mad.
00:04:06He says he thought he kind of disgraced himself
00:04:08in a way it's not representative of what he is,
00:04:11and he's going to come here and set the record straight.
00:04:13He's going to be strong, going to come out and take command,
00:04:15and it's going to be all over by mid-fight.
00:04:17Well, he won the belt in 96 with a fifth-round knockout
00:04:20of Julio Cesar Vazquez in France,
00:04:22successfully defended against Carl Daniels by decision.
00:04:25Then the draw with Jones.
00:04:26A controversial affair, but one he needed to win round 12 on all three cards,
00:04:31and he did.
00:04:32He retained his title.
00:04:33He fought the first three rounds essentially going backwards.
00:04:37And, Ferdi, that's just not his style.
00:04:39It probably cost him a victory.
00:04:40For him to be effective, he's got to be moving forward.
00:04:43Yeah, not only was he moving backwards,
00:04:46but he was moving backwards and not fighting.
00:04:48I mean, you can move backwards, stop and punch like Ali and so forth.

00:04:52This guy fights only one gear, forward.

00:04:59And when you don't do that, you lose the rounds big time and look bad doing it.

00:09:49He just didn't follow up with the punches,
00:09:51waited too late to work the body,
00:09:52didn't throw the right hand enough.
00:09:54He favored the left hook
00:09:55and he didn't make Jones think enough.
00:09:57But I'll say this about Boudouane,
00:09:59as you see the size difference right away.
00:10:01Down he goes.
00:10:03He does have a great chin.
00:10:05That was definitely not a knockdown.
00:10:06That was a slip.
00:10:08And he's lucky that Steele counted it that way
00:10:10because he got hit and went down.
00:10:13Now, whether it was a slip or not,

00:10:19Boudouane, awkward but strong,
00:10:21sometimes inconsistent,
00:10:22gets a little lackadaisical,
00:10:24very blasé going into that first Jones fight.
00:10:26But as you pointed out,
00:10:28very intense in the meeting yesterday,
00:10:31heading into the rematch.
00:10:32He wants his bad now.
00:10:34He wants to recoup his,
00:10:35what he feels is his lost prestige,
00:10:38and he did lose something.
00:10:38Jones is showing his mettle and a good chin in that first fight.
00:10:43Excellent jab,
00:10:44which is often an underrated weapon in the boxing game these days.
00:10:49There's the jab looking to set up the explosive right.
00:10:52He says that's the key.
00:10:53Another key is that he's got to try to outstrength Boudouane.
00:10:56Jones said he wanted to come on and apply pressure earlier,
00:10:59but that's what Boudouane has to do as well.
00:11:01And you see he's attempting that.
00:11:03And hitting,
00:11:04Boudouane's getting his shots in.
00:11:06He's getting the power shots in that weaken Jones.
00:11:08Jones is starting to fight tentatively.
00:11:10He is not,
00:11:11he is not leading the dance here.
00:11:14Boudouane reacting and landing hard from time to time,
00:11:17which is getting Jones' attention.
00:11:19Boudouane also missing wildly at times too.
00:11:21He's got to be careful not to open himself up.
00:11:25Boudouane just said he doesn't know why he started so slow the first time
00:11:29against Jones.

00:11:37he said it's going to be different this time.
00:11:38He trained at home in France with his brother,

00:11:41but he was surprised in the original meeting by that,
00:11:45that jab.
00:11:46He went home to Montblanc from the shadow of the fountain pen.

00:11:51And he's so determined.
00:11:54It's a completely different.

00:11:58And now this is fighting the way he was fighting in round 12.

00:12:06this is a totally different Boudouane from the first fight.

00:12:09He's not landing with everything,

00:12:11he's making Jones think.
00:12:13And Jones is not getting in the shots he did the first time.
00:12:16The first time he just kept him dancing at the end of a jab.
00:12:18He's not doing that this time.

00:18:11i mean he's not in there with a guy that's willing to just give up but jones wants to take this title

00:19:34bauduani and that got the attention of jones jones has a great chin well that moved his head back and
00:19:40i thought he was really stung by that bro i mean that was a great right hand by bauduani

00:57:47again you gotta give him credit he's certainly a conditioned fighter he certainly said he was
00:57:52going to be strong and he was strong and he's fun to watch a busy swarming fighter lots of movement

00:57:57he starts fast he's fast in the middle he's fast at the end he doesn't let up he's relentless
00:58:06and the crowd here at the theater in las vegas standing by for the decision take a look at some
00:58:13of the action here take a look at this action as budwani coming on trying whatever he can to knock
00:58:19him out but he can't quite land look at those two huge misses that takes a lot out of you that's a miss
00:58:23and in the meantime jones when he is not doing much of anything comes back and starts punching

00:58:50surprised by the great jab of jones in the first fight but he knew it to anticipate here in in fight

01:04:19decisions we don't understand everybody around us don king just came by everybody around us had
01:04:24jones way ahead and the public had him ahead at home i cannot fathom how we can stand that kind of a
01:04:31thing without at least an investigation or a review of it somebody sit with these judges and
01:04:36say how did you figure that out i'd like to hear some of those rounds well it's amazing we always
01:04:41seem to have to preface every decision here particularly in las vegas with you never know
01:04:47because we're in uh we're in las vegas and it happened again i thought i was just you know kidding
01:04:51around yeah no i mean no really no this is the bermuda triangle of judging boxing this is definitely it
01:04:57i've never been i've been in boxing for 40 years and never been in a place where you can
01:05:01consistently depend on a bizarre ending to a fight i've never seen it well mr jones got sucked right
01:05:08down that bermuda triangle here in las vegas tonight he deserved to win he loses by split decision

01:06:48champion evander holyfield is going to take on uh akinwande this is going to be a great show i'm

01:07:53so he's going to go out there and fight i don't think that holyfield is looking for no easy touch
01:07:57here on that evening it's going to be exciting and this guy's got so much to make up for for having
01:08:01an opportunity at lennox lewis knocking lennox lewis down and not even realizing that he has knocked him
01:08:06down and so now he has holyfield but you have an additional thing that could be another miracle on
01:08:12on the seventh avenue and that's roberto manners de pietro duran he's the hands of stone he's
01:08:17getting another opportunity which we'll call his last hurrah and this guy every june that we
01:08:21it's william joppy yes against william joppy but in june he has a special type of fetish for winning
01:08:26championships like he did with davy moore in june like he did with the the first time he won a fight
01:08:31with the guy that he fought was the young scottish kid that he that he beat went right from the beginning
01:08:36who are you talking about uh when when duran won a lightweight championship in madison square garden
01:08:41that was a long time a long time ago but it was in june and so what you do is you get these june
01:08:46things that duran comes with so we're going to see if the june luck will hold out for him against

01:09:55score 116 112 that's four points four points where in there did he win four rounds
01:10:00where did he win four rounds it's an it's an almost impossibility to judge that fight and
01:10:06give him four rounds superiority over budwani at 115 113 budwani for jones but i cannot see how you
01:10:13could wait what rounds was he winning i mean absorbing uh jabs and staying conscious is not
01:10:19a point getter and so i i don't know it's one of those as we said las vegas decisions
01:10:25and there'll be many more i'm sure if we do a lot of fights here well you just have to shake your
01:10:29head there's nothing you can say i don't understand it well as we wind things down from
01:10:34the theater here at the las vegas hilton let's go back and take a look at the highlights of
01:10:38tonight's world championship doubleheader the lowlights in some cases this is the first fight
01:10:43austin kaspari and kaspari doing very well until that moment that moment he gets connected and out he
01:10:50goes his consciousness and his feet left his body that's what ended it for uh tim austin who is still
01:10:57the champion the fight we just saw we'll pick it up in uh round number nine with jones coming out
01:11:01strong and this is the one where they both uh took turns and belaboring each other this is budwani
01:11:08right here doing all the fighting and then turned around and it went the other way uh jones then came
01:11:13on and did a strong fight good exchange there but uh budwani uh with the uh the surprising victory uh
01:11:21very very difficult to understand a split decision here for budwani when it really uh appeared as if
01:11:26guillermo joan it could appear as if he did win this well jerry roth had budwani winning eight rounds
