Terry Norris looks to recapture the WBC Super Welterweight Title from Luis Santana on Showtime Pay Per View Boxing
Transcript
00:00The
00:30It was 17 years ago that Larry Holmes met Ken Norton for the WBC heavyweight title.
00:44And only seven months ago when Oliver McCall faced Lennox Lewis for the very same title.
00:53But now they meet in a heavyweight battle of the ages.
00:58It has been over 10 years since the 45-year-old Holmes has won a world title fight.
01:04But many believe with his legendary piston-like jab, he will turn back the clock and once again be the WBC heavyweight champion.
01:14Others adamantly argue that the 29-year-old McCall will make his first title defense a successful one as he has too much strength, speed, and stamina for the former champion.
01:25We'll find out tonight.
01:26McCall vs. Holmes for the WBC heavyweight championship.
01:31The heavyweight championship action continues.
01:34Former champion and current number one contender Tony TNT Tucker hopes to explode into the title picture as he takes on number two contender Bruce Seldon for a vacant heavyweight title.
01:44It's Tucker vs. Seldon for the WBA heavyweight championship.
01:49Six-time world champion Julio Cesar Chavez, known as the Lion of Cuyacan, plans to tear apart the hard-hitting, lightning-quick former WBO lightweight champion, the pride of Italy, Giovanni Parisi.
02:03It's Chavez vs. Parisi for the WBC super lightweight title.
02:07Plus, IBF welterweight champion Felix Trinidad brings his awesome power and burgeoning reputation into the ring as he hopes to go toe-to-toe against the swift and skillful Roger Turner.
02:17It's Trinidad vs. Turner for the IBF welterweight championship.
02:22It's all coming to you live tonight from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada.
02:28It's a night headlined by McCall vs. Holmes to see who answers the burden of proof for the WBC heavyweight title.
02:40This is a promotion of Don King Productions in association with Caesars Palace and Corona Beer.
02:53Pay Per View distributed by S.E.T. Pay Per View.
03:04Welcome to Caesars Palace.
03:06For almost 30 years, this hotel casino has been one of the brightest lights on the Las Vegas Strip.
03:12Here at Caesars, they proudly proclaim that this is the home of champions.
03:16Seventy-three world championship fights have taken place on these grounds, and it is the birthplace of Showtime Championship boxing.
03:24Nine years ago, this was the site of our very first fight, Hagler vs. Mugabe.
03:29Along with the aforementioned marvelous Marvin Hagler, the list of boxing luminaries that have waged battles right here includes Ali, Foreman, Leonard, Hearns, Duran, and former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes.
03:42And Holmes hopes he can relive his past glory tonight in our main event against WBC heavyweight champion Oliver McCall.
03:49But, of course, the newly crowned title holder has other plans.
03:53McCall wants to begin his reign as champion with a successful title defense and follow in the footsteps of the other boxing greats who have graced this place called the home of champions.
04:03Hello, everybody, I'm Jim Hill, your host for this night of championship boxing from the outdoor arena at Caesars Palace.
04:11This card features legendary fighters, reigning champions, and former champions, as well as five world titles will be contested on this battleground.
04:20Our main event is a fight for the ages that matches a newly crowned champion who burst on the heavyweight championship scene last September
04:27against a former world heavyweight champion who has been in the title picture during the last three decades.
04:33For more on tonight's main event, let's go to ringside and Steve Albert.
04:36Steve.
04:37All right, thank you very much, Jim.
04:39With the heavyweights dominating tonight's mammoth fight card, we thought we'd begin with a brief review of the current status of the division
04:44and see how the titles have changed over the recent months heading into tonight with two championships at stake.
04:50Of course, Oliver McCall with his shocking upset over Lennox Lewis this past September, capturing the WBC heavyweight crown,
04:5746-year-old George Foreman with his dramatic November knockout of Michael Moore, won the WBA IBF versions of the title,
05:04only to surrender the WBA belt for failing to fight the mandatory challenger.
05:09That set up tonight's battle for the vacant WBA title between Tony Tucker and number two, Bruce Seldon.
05:15And not to forget Riddick Bowe, who currently owns the WBO heavyweight belt, tonight's main event,
05:21an intriguing matchup between a newly crowned champion and a former champion who is 16 years older than the title holder.
05:28We'll come back to ringside in just a moment.
05:30Right now, let's go back upstairs to Jim Hill.
05:34All right, Steve, thank you very much.
05:36The weather conditions for tonight's event here at Caesars Palace Arena, 77 degrees, winds at 13 miles an hour.
05:43The humidity is at 26 percent, and the forecast tonight is windy and clear with gusts of winds up to 35 miles an hour.
05:53Now, one of the five world championship fights on tonight's card featured a rematch of a controversial bout for the WBC Super Welterweight Championship.
06:00The challenger and former champion, Terry Norris, lost the title to Luis Santana last November by disqualification.
06:07And it was a bizarre and dangerous sequence of events that transpired after Santana hit the canvas.
06:14Last November, while Terry Norris was defending the WBC Super Welterweight title, he fouled Luis Santana in the fifth round.
06:21This blow to the back of Santana's head and neck sent the challenger to the canvas.
06:29Referee Mitch Halpern immediately called a foul on Norris.
06:34At that point, confusion took over in the ring, and a potentially life-threatening situation began to unfold.
06:42Santana lay motionless for nearly 10 minutes, while the physician, Dr. Horatio Ramirez, and the attending officials debated the fighter's ability to continue.
06:49Oddly enough, the ringside officials at the advice of the doctor began to insist Santana get up and continue to fight.
06:57A bewildered Norris stood by and watched while Ferdi Pacheco and other ringside observers screamed for medical assistance for Santana.
07:06And finally, referee Halpern took charge and declared Santana the winner by disqualification,
07:12and the new champion left the ring on a stretcher apparently still unconscious.
07:15And earlier tonight here at Caesars Palace, Santana and Norris met in their rematch for the WBC Super Welterweight Championship
07:25for the outcome of this grudge match between these two bitter rivals.
07:29Let's go back to ringside once again, and here's Steve Albert.
07:31Steve.
07:32All right, thanks again, Jim.
07:33Well, that was then, and this is now, as terrible Terry Norris stepped back in the ring
07:37to meet Luis Santana again following that bizarre turn of events at Plaza de Toros in Mexico City this past November.
07:43It marked the second time in Norris' career that he was disqualified,
07:48and the second time in less than a year that he lost the WBC Super Welterweight title when fighting in Mexico.
07:55And if you thought the first fight was bizarre, wait till you see what happened in the rematch.
07:59Norris, a 12-to-1 favorite going in, and in total command of the fight,
08:03had no reason to do anything foolish again as he did in the first meeting.
08:07Round two, big right by Norris, and Santana went down to the canvas.
08:12And yes, it happened once again in the third round.
08:18Again, Santana going down.
08:22Norris, a right hand to the head.
08:23But then came the clincher.
08:26Call it, guys.
08:27Wait, please.
08:29Referee Kenny Bayless.
08:35Go haul him.
08:36Go haul him.
08:38Haul it.
08:40That's all right.
08:42That's another one, okay?
08:44That's another one.
08:45Hey!
08:46No, no, no, no, no, don't do it.
08:48Don't do it.
08:49Don't do it.
08:50Don't do it.
08:50Don't do it.
08:50Don't do it.
08:50Don't do it.
08:50Don't do it.
08:51Don't do it.
08:51Unbelievable.
08:52After the bell clearly sounded,
08:53did Norris hit Santana with that ferocious right?
08:56And like deja vu, Santana lay sprawled on his back
09:00and motionless on the canvas.
09:02Almost a carbon copy of the first incident.
09:05Afterwards, the fight doctor, Ferdi Pacheco,
09:08caught up with Terry Norris.
09:11Let's hear what Norris had to say.
09:16All right, Terry, another one of those strange things that happened.
09:18Give it to me.
09:19What happened?
09:20Well, Kenny told us, you know, to step back.
09:22I had stepped back and he was letting him come.
09:25He was letting him come on, but his corner, I guess, had jumped in.
09:28I didn't see it.
09:30But when Kenny was getting ready to step back, I was ready.
09:33I was just ready.
09:33And I hit him when he got shot and he went down.
09:35You know, it's not my fault, but Kenny told us to break and pull us back.
09:39Did you hear the bell ring?
09:40You know that the bell had rung already?
09:42No, I didn't hear the bell.
09:43And Kenny didn't say anything, you know.
09:44The bell had rung.
09:45I thought the guy, when I looked over, I thought they had stopped the fight, you know.
09:48He thought he was going to stop the fight.
09:49Terry thought he was going to stop the fight.
09:52That's when the referee interfered.
09:54And then Luis Santana charged at Terry.
09:56And Terry, you know, had to defend himself.
09:58Here with Mark Ratner, the executive director of the Nevada State Boxing Commission.
10:02Mark, can you tell us what happened and what Kenny Bayless ruled the referee in the ring?
10:04The referee told me it was an intentional foul after the bell.
10:08The rules are, if you cannot continue after an intentional foul, the winner will be by disqualification, and that will be Mr. Santana.
10:16There was some discussion.
10:17Was he clear on that?
10:18What was the discussion about?
10:19Yes, he was very clear on that.
10:20The Norris corner was arguing, and I wasn't aware of all the argument, but there was no question in the referee's mind.
10:26Why can't Kenny Bayless come speak to us?
10:29It's our policy that the executive director will speak for him.
10:31There's no problem with that.
10:33I'm speaking for him.
10:34I'm the executive director of the commission.
10:36Of course, Terry Norris has accused in the past Santana of laying down.
10:40This type of occurrence has happened several times before with Terry Norris, and he's been disqualified before for it.
10:45So going into this fight, obviously, you have to know, would you be aware if a guy was, in fact, faking?
10:50We had Dr. Homansky, a renowned ringside physician, checked him.
10:54He's going to the hospital right now.
10:56He's on oxygen.
10:57His vital signs are good, but we're going to have him completely neurologically checked out.
11:00Talking to Flip Homansky, the ring physician here in charge of all this.
11:05He had a neurosurgeon in immediately, just as we saw in England.
11:09They had the stretcher in, they had oxygen in.
11:11He responded.
11:12The boxer responded to oral commands, moved when he wanted to, moved his legs, moved his arms.
11:18It was already significant that that didn't look like that bad an injury, but he couldn't move.
11:23He couldn't get up.
11:23In order to be sure, they put him on a stretcher.
11:25Oxygen.
11:26Got him out of here in an ambulance.
11:28Valley Hospital is five minutes away.
11:30A neurosurgical team are waiting for them there to do a CAT scan to be sure.
11:34Regrettably, this is one of those things that keeps happening in boxing, but look how well
11:38the Las Vegas Commission did after the English Commission has shown the way.
11:42At least we're showing some improvement.
11:44So, amazingly, for two consecutive fights now, the winner carried out on a stretcher.
11:53Now, is Santana, Ferdi, still in any danger?
11:56Yes, he is.
11:57He's in quite a bit of danger until I do the CAT scan and identify whether he has any bleeding.
12:02Here's a man that got knocked out just four months ago.
12:05He may not have healed from that.
12:07He got a tremendous shot there.
12:08If that dislodges the bleeding that had stopped last time, then a CAT scan is the only way
12:14that you can tell.
12:15Now, remember, this is exactly what we had with Gerald McClellan.
12:17McClellan was moving different hands.
12:19He was talking.
12:20He was awake.
12:21He went to do a CAT scan, and we saw this huge collection of blood.
12:24So, until a CAT scan is over with, Mr. Santana is not out of trouble.
12:28And as we bring in our other partner here, Bobby Chez.
12:31And, Bobby, this is almost inconceivable and totally senseless.
12:34Steve, it's almost unjustifiable at any length.
12:36No matter what you do, you can't understand it.
12:39Terry's had two problems over the course of his career.
12:41One, sometimes a suspect chin.
12:42The other, some over-anxiousness and fouling.
12:45Third, disqualification.
12:46Two in title fights.
12:47I don't understand what's going on.
12:49He just can't seem to get his rage under control.
12:51And it's going to cost him, I think, somewhere down the road.
12:53He may get suspended indefinitely by someone, and that would be sad.
12:57I mean, he was in total control, obviously in no danger, during the first three rounds of
13:02the fight.
13:02What would cause a man to pull something like this?
13:05I don't think anyone would argue that Terry is a supreme talent.
13:08And certainly in that ring tonight, and when he was with Santana the first time, he was
13:12the talent.
13:12A better fighter by far.
13:14But his emotions sometimes get the control of him.
13:16He can't block out what he needs to, and he lets some rage in and just can't control it.
13:20For whatever reason, he unloads on people when they're down, when their back's turned,
13:24and when he's not supposed to.
13:25And I don't even know if he can explain it, Steve.
13:27All right, Bobby, an incredible opening to the first of five world championship fights
13:33right now.
13:34Let's go to Jim Gray.
13:36Okay, thank you, Steve Alper.
13:37We just spoke to Valley Hospital here in Las Vegas, and they tell us that Santana is speaking,
13:41he is in stable condition, and that he never lost consciousness.
13:44So that, in fact, is good news.
13:46Joining us now is Terry Norris.
13:47Terry, you've had the opportunity now to see the replay.
13:49Clearly, this was several seconds after the bell.
13:51Do you have a different take than you did in the ring?
13:53No.
13:55I didn't know the bell.
13:56I didn't know the bell had rang.
13:58I don't think he sent down and knew the bell rang because he was coming toward me.
14:03And I don't think the referee knew the bell had rang.
14:05So we were just still fighting.
14:07The referee stepped in between us and warned him for a low blow, and then he stepped back,
14:14and I caught him with a right hand, and that's when he went down.
14:16We're going to take a look at this again here on the replay,
14:18and we will be able to show you and have you listen to where, in fact, the bell rings
14:23as we take a look at this here on the screen.
14:26Terry, right at the end of the round here, tell us right here what you're doing.
14:33I'm just working.
14:35Go hollin', go hollin'.
14:37Hit him with a couple good right hands.
14:41There's the bell.
14:42There's the bell.
14:43That's another warning, okay?
14:45That's another warning.
14:46I didn't know the bell, you know what I'm standing right there.
14:49Referee said that's another warning.
14:51I didn't know.
14:53It was another warning, but nobody knew that the bell had rang,
14:55and he didn't push me away, you know.
14:58And I thought it was just a break, and he stepped back, and that's when I caught him.
15:01A lot of people will wonder, though, this is now your third disqualification,
15:04if, in fact, there is some type of self-control problem in the ring.
15:07I don't think it's bad.
15:10I think it's just, you know, I'm in there to fight, and I thought, you know, that's what I'm there for.
15:15It's a fight, and I don't think it was my fault.
15:18Very bitterly, you thought that Santana laid down last time.
15:21Is that your thought again this time?
15:22Well, I'd rather not say, you know, but, you know, last time, you know, people can call it what they want to call it,
15:29but it looked like it, but I don't know.
15:32Terry, thank you for coming on.
15:33Last time that this happened was all the way back in 1931,
15:36when Marcel Till won the middleweight championship twice in a row by having an opponent disqualified.
15:41Let's go back outside to Jim Hill.
15:44Okay, Jim, thank you very much.
15:46With me is marvelous Marvin Hagler, who was the undisputed middleweight boxing champion of the world,
15:51and, I mean, just to say unbelievable is exactly the way to describe this,
15:55but you mentioned earlier that you thought that this was a rather dumb thing that Terry Norris did.
16:00Well, I would say a stupid thing, really, because I'm hoping that because of this fight,
16:05that I really don't label him, because he's a great fighter, Terry Norris, as a dirty fighter.
16:09You said he knew what he was doing, though, a little while ago.
16:11Yeah, I felt as though he had the time, but sometimes when you're preparing for a fight like this,
16:15you're all built up, and, you know, things like this happen.
16:18Like we said, this is the third time that he's been disqualified, champ.
16:22He's going to have this label now.
16:24How can he get rid of the label as being a dirty fighter, or can he?
16:27Well, for me, I believe that the public now is going to label him that,
16:30and it's going to be very hard for him to get away from that.
16:34Terry's a great person and a great boxer.
16:37Okay, Marvin, thank you so much, and we look forward to hearing from you
16:39throughout the rest of the night on all of our championship fights.
16:42Well, my friends, now it is time to begin
16:44our live coverage of tonight's championship boxing event.
16:48We start with the IBF Welterweight Championship,
16:51featuring the undefeated knockout artist from Puerto Rico,
16:54Felix Trinidad, against the number nine contender, Roger Turner.
16:59And here is the champion, Felix Tito Trinidad,
17:03making final preparations for his sixth title defense.
17:06Now, prior to his knockout victory over Maurice Blocker,
17:08to capture the IBF Welterweight title,
