00:00He just examined Alfredo. How is he and what's the problem? He's doing well. The
00:03concern was that he had a fracture over his left eye. It was tender and there
00:09was some sponginess to it so that was the concern. We worry about orbital
00:14fractures because they can entrap the eye and we didn't want there to be a
00:17problem so he immediately goes to the hospital to get that evaluated and
00:20treated if that's the problem. All the rest of his condition is stable? Everything
00:24else is fine. It was just that eye that was the concern. How painful is something
00:28like that and what can you do for it? He said it was painful. It would be a
00:32surgical issue if in fact it was fractured, but it's exquisitely
00:36painful and that's why he stopped because of the pain. Doctor, we appreciate it.
00:40Thank you. Back to you, Brian. All right, Jim, thank you so much. Again, the very
00:45latest and everything we can at least report to you. Again, how painful is it?
00:49Exceedingly painful, at least for Alfredo Angulo, for him to turn his back after a
00:53tremendous night in the ring against Arislandi Lara. Let's go back ringside.
00:57Time now for the main event. All right, Brian, we are coming to you tonight from
01:02beautiful Southern California and the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
01:06Following a terrific tilt, we are set for the main event in a much anticipated battle.
01:13This one has the hallmarks of an all-action affair as Marcos Maidana meets
01:17Josecito Lopez, Josecito Lopez.
01:25Fight fans from the Home Depot Center here in Carson, California.
01:34Fight fans from the Home Depot Center here in Carson, California.
01:38We have arrived to the main event of the evening.
01:42And now, please welcome to the ring from Riverside, California,
01:48Josecito Lopez.
01:512012 was the year that Josecito Lopez put himself on the boxing map, taking a fight with Victor
02:10Ortiz on short notice and earning the moniker Riverside Rocky for pulling off the biggest upset of last year.
02:18That victory earned him the biggest payday of his career.
02:22Unfortunately, outgunned against the bigger and better Canelo Alvarez.
02:26But his heart, his willingness to do battle against any and all comers puts him in the main event tonight, Al,
02:34against Marcos Maidana.
02:35And the ingredients are in place for a fight that should be at least as good as the one we just saw.
02:41We expect a tremendous fight.
02:43One of the issues for him is he's coming in off an eight-month layoff, and he's not been active.
02:48He hasn't fought more than twice in a year since 2009.
02:51So, dangerous times early for Josecito Lopez against a big puncher.
02:56I'll tell you, I hate to be the fight after such an action-packed fight.
03:11I'm going to the ring from Margarita, Argentina, Marcos Maidana.
03:26Pauly, normally I would agree with you, but tonight we've got Marcos Maidana and Josecito Lopez going against each other.
03:42And I agree with you 100%.
03:44Mara, I was going to make that point, but Joe Martinez had announced Marcos, so I got cut off halfway.
03:48But in reality, if there's a fight that could supersede that action, you are right.
03:54It is this one.
03:55The noted knockout artist Maidana, 2-1 at welterweight, coming off a third-round KO victory in his native Argentina,
04:01where boxing these days is on fuego.
04:03He defeated Angel Martinez in December.
04:06He moved up to welterweight in February of last year.
04:08Things didn't go well against Devin Alexander, but since then, back-to-back victories,
04:12including a very entertaining victory over Jesus Sotokaras here on Showtime.
04:16The knockout king against the gutsy, Josecito Lopez.
04:21We are set for what should be a tremendous tilt.
04:25Let's go to the tail of the tape for this welterweight war.
04:31As you take a look at the numbers, the height and reach advantage for Lopez in this case
04:36could be something he might utilize.
04:38He's a slugger, we know that, but he does want to box at long range,
04:43and he would like to occasionally punch, punch, punch, take a walk.
04:51So we are set for the official introductions.
04:54Once again, here is Joe Martinez.
05:00And now, ladies and gentlemen, from Sold Out Home Depot Center here in Carson, California,
05:06this is the main event of the evening.
05:11Twelve rounds scheduled for the WBA Intercontinental Welterweight Championship.
05:18Presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Goose and Tudor Promotions,
05:23Thompson Boxing Promotions, and Showtime.
05:26And sponsored by Corona Extra, La Cerveza Más Fina, and AT&T.
05:31Pienza Sin Limites.
05:32Sanctioned by the California State Athletic Commission, the chairman, John Frierson.
05:38Executive officer is Andy Foster.
05:40And the WBA, President Gilberto Mendoza, and supervisor in attendance, Robert Mack.
05:46The physicians at ringside, Eddie Yehub and Paul Wallace.
05:50And your timekeepers in charge of the bell and counting for knockdowns,
05:53John Reinschmidt-Lichty and Willie Arriola.
05:56Presenting our judges for this contest, all from California, Carla Cainz, Jerry Cantu, and Max DeLuca.
06:05And when the bell rings, your referee in charge of the action, Dr. Lou Morat.
06:11And now, ladies and gentlemen, the judges are ready, and the fighters are ready.
06:16Mexicanos, dile al mundo.
06:19Fight fans, make some noise, and let the world know, you are ready!
06:30Introducing to you first, fighting out of the red corner.
06:33Wearing white trunks, he hails from Riverside, California.
06:37Wearing it officially, 145 pounds, this veteran brings 30 victories, 5 defeats, 1 no decision,
06:46and 18 big wins by way of knockout.
06:50Please welcome the former NABF Super Lightweight Champion.
06:55Here is the hard-hitting, Josecito Lopez!
07:01And next is the port across the ring, fighting out of the blue corner.
07:12Wearing red with black, he hails from Margarita, Santa Fe, Argentina.
07:17Wearing it officially, 147 pounds, this ring veteran brings an outstanding record that stands
07:23at 33 victories, 3 defeats, and 30 big wins coming by way of knockout.
07:29Currently ranked the number two WBA welterweight contender, here is the former WBA Super Lightweight
07:37Champion of the World, Margos El Chido Maidana!
07:45Once again, a new referee in charge with the final instruction, Dr. Lou Morant.
08:00Okay, gentlemen, I'm giving you instruction, Jonathan, you have a good point, right?
08:07It's fitting that we have a doctor as a referee, Dr. Lou Morant,
08:15because these two warriors have promised to put it all on the line,
08:19have promised to punish each other, to entertain the crowd,
08:23and assert themselves in a very competitive division, the welterweight division.
08:29The wick has been lit.
08:31We are underway with the main event between Marcos Maidana in the red with black,
08:36and Josecito Lopez in the white with black and gold.
08:39The 152nd professional round of Maidana's career.
08:46This is the 201st round as a pro for the Riverside Rocky.
08:52You know, in the last fight that we saw, Maidana, against Jesus Soto Caras,
08:58his new, relatively new trainer, Robert Garcia, worked on him using the jab more.
09:03He landed 22 jabs in the first round, his high of his career.
09:07Let's see if he continues that in this fight.
09:09He's recorded 10 first-round knockouts, 27 of his 30 wins via form of a KO of a current inside six rounds.
09:16Meanwhile, Lopez has five first-round victories to his credit.
09:22Both guys look coming out establishing the jab, huh?
09:25Mm-hmm.
09:26So a little boxing.
09:27Why not?
09:28Stinging right hand by Lopez.
09:30Set up by the jab.
09:31And we see the height and reach of Lopez.
09:35If he can use it effectively, it can be very effective.
09:40Remember, Devin Alexander used that as he boxed Maidana,
09:44and Maidana's move up to the welterweight.
09:46Yeah, it's close to the fight.
09:47Yeah, Alexander dominated him.
09:49It worked so well that Maidana thought,
09:51hey, I'm going to try this boxing stuff.
09:52Why not?
09:53A minute and a half gone in the opening round.
10:01Overhand right connects by Lopez.
10:04He's been the more effective in terms of the power shots early on.
10:07Good movement by Lopez.
10:17Of course, Maidana's quote was,
10:19he wanted to get into a brawl.
10:23If Lopez is willing,
10:24this is going to be a toe-to-toe slugfest from start to finish.
10:29So far, Lopez boxing a very smart first round.
10:35A minute,
10:36under a minute remaining in the opening frame.
10:39Thus far,
10:42it's been the tale of two jabs
10:44with a couple of nice right hands by Lopez,
10:46but there's a right hand by Maidana,
10:48and in close,
10:49oh, and Lopez with a right hand,
10:52and talking to Lopez's trainer,
10:54Henry Ramirez,
10:55Al,
10:55he was talking about the fact that Maidana,
10:57as we saw against Soto Kahn,
10:58this can be chippy at times,
11:00and he said,
11:00you know what,
11:01we're going to fight fire with fire.
11:02Well,
11:02that's if he does some illegal things.
11:04That was a nice legal right hand by Maidana,
11:07and let's see,
11:08that's the big punch.
11:08They have to worry about it.
11:11Oh,
11:11and a nice combination by Lopez,
11:13three punch combo.
11:14That's the thing about these guys,
11:15they can try to box each other,
11:16but their natural instinct,
11:18as soon as they start hitting each other,
11:19is to fight.
11:21Left hook to the body by Lopez.
11:25So perhaps a sign of things to come
11:27in the opening three minutes here
11:28in Carson, California.
11:38The equalizer in this fight,
11:45many people believe would be the right hand,
11:47especially by Maidana.
11:49And that was a beauty.
11:50Boy,
11:51he throws a great right hand.
11:52But,
11:53Lopez,
11:54as is his want,
11:55even after taking a left hook,
11:57himself will come back with an overhand right.
11:59And then later,
12:01later in the round,
12:03again,
12:03Lopez would repeat the action on the inside
12:06with a right hand
12:07as he set up with the jab
12:10and then cuffed him with that right hand.
12:13So when you make Josecito Lopez fight,
12:15he will fight.
12:21Lopez started boxing at eight,
12:23had around 70 amateur fights.
12:25Maidana started boxing at 15.
12:28He had around 80 amateur bouts.
12:32And round two begins.
12:35We talked about Maidana
12:36like running the jab.
12:3844 of his 58 punches were jabs.
12:40And they're getting at it here in round two.
12:41So right hand lands by Maidana
12:44again at close quarters.
12:46They tussle along the ropes.
12:47The referee,
12:48Dr. Lou Moret,
12:49breaking them apart.
12:51Double jab from Maidana.
12:58Reigning trainer of their year,
13:00Robert Garcia in Maidana's corner.
13:02Henry Ramirez,
13:03who actually had Lopez
13:06stay with him
13:07during this training camp.
13:09Lopez has been through
13:10some tumultuous times
13:12in his life as well
13:12as we have documented here
13:13on Showtime.
13:14His father was incarcerated
13:15on drug charges,
13:16then deported to Mexico
13:18just across the border.
13:20They see him on occasion.
13:23And while they're trying to get him,
13:25that deportation thing turned around,
13:27Lopez said,
13:27during my training camp,
13:28I don't think about that.
13:29I don't deal with that.
13:30That'll come after.
13:32This is Lopez trying to box Maidana here,
13:34but he's a little bit jumpy,
13:35like he wants to do more.
13:37And that's the temptation
13:38for a guy who's not used to boxing,
13:41who's used to slugging,
13:42yet is trying to box intelligently
13:43against a guy
13:44maybe he shouldn't slug again.
13:45And Maidana,
13:46like fighters Floyd Mayweather
13:48and Miguel Cota,
13:49right hand connects by Lopez.
13:51Maidana started his own
13:52boxing promotion
13:52in Argentina last year,
13:54and Lopez backs him up
13:55in the corner.
13:58Little chippy there again.
13:59This can't not be fun tonight.
14:06Now, Lopez, I think,
14:08has underused the jab a little.
14:09Here comes Maidana cornering him.
14:11Lopez guns him with the jab,
14:13and now exchange.
14:14Lopez in trouble in the corner
14:16as they tussle.
14:17They're wrestling here.
14:18Lopez wanting to crowd Maidana.
14:20Maidana punching his way out.
14:22He turned Lopez around
14:24with that right hand.
14:25And the bigger Lopez
14:26wanting to muscle Maidana.
14:28Lean into him.
14:29But Maidana fighting out of it.
14:31I think he was trying
14:32to smother him there.
14:33I think that he felt that hook.
14:36Under a minute remaining
14:37in the second stanza.
14:39Better round for Maidana.
14:41Coming forward.
14:43Left hook to the body
14:44by Lopez.
14:49This is looking like
14:51the kind of fight
14:52Maidana wants.
14:53Even though it's been
14:54very evenly fought
14:55over these first two rounds,
14:56the pace of it
14:57and the way it's been fought
14:58I think it's what Maidana wants.
15:00Under 30 seconds remaining
15:01in the second round.
15:04Lopez, the fan favorite.
15:08Maidana putting pressure
15:09left hook by Maidana.
15:10Right hand connects.
15:13And another right hand,
15:14Lopez, getting tagged here
15:16in round two.
15:19I think Lopez is going to start
15:20fighting real soon, guys.
15:21He's trying to box.
15:22He's trying to hold on
15:23to the game plan,
15:24but it's getting harder and harder.
15:26The jab finding its mark.
15:29Right round for Maidana.
15:37Interested spectator Israel Vasquez
15:40involved in one of the more
15:41memorable trilogies.
15:43I know he fought Rafael Marquez
15:44four times,
15:45and the third fight
15:47was right here
15:47at the Home Depot Center
15:48back in March of 2008.
15:51So, Vasquez on the outside
15:52looking in tonight.
15:53One of the great warriors
15:54in boxing history.
15:57We go back to what was
15:58a memorable round here
16:00in the last round.
16:02And this is where
16:03Maidana lands
16:05just a big right hand.
16:08Now, that went off the top
16:09of the head of Lopez.
16:10So, it hurt his equilibrium,
16:11I think.
16:12And then Maidana
16:12keeps punching, of course.
16:14And toward the end
16:15of the round,
16:16Maidana trapping Lopez
16:18against her ups
16:19and ripping punches.
16:21And again,
16:21the overhand right
16:22is a big weapon.
16:24And he is having
16:25a hard time.
16:26Lopez is keeping him off
16:28during the course
16:29of those rounds.
16:31The bell in round three
16:33begins here at the
16:34Home Depot Center.
16:35Record crowd in attendance.
16:37Mauro Ranallo
16:37along with Al Bernstein
16:38and Paulie Malignaggi
16:40ringside.
16:43Maidana in the red
16:44with black.
16:46Lopez sporting the white
16:47with black and gold trunks.
16:52And again,
16:53at close quarters.
16:54Rough housing
16:55trying to punch out.
16:56Lopez stings Maidana
17:06with the jab.
17:07But it's Maidana
17:08triple jab
17:08and straight right hand,
17:09Paulie.
17:10And that's the thing, man.
17:11It's Holesito
17:12trying to establish
17:12the boxing here.
17:14But if Maidana
17:14starts to land
17:15his own jab
17:15and straight punches,
17:17well, it's going to be
17:17difficult for Holesito
17:18to win even
17:18trying to box.
17:20Even if Maidana
17:20boxes with him.
17:22Yeah.
17:23And Maidana
17:24doesn't want to box
17:25anymore.
17:25Yeah, of course.
17:26Especially once he starts
17:27to land those kind of shots.
17:28Right hand by Lopez.
17:29Lead right connects.
17:32That's the thing.
17:32These guys are not
17:33going to be shy
17:33about unloading offense
17:34and they're both
17:35pretty hittable
17:36to say the least.
17:37The plans for Lopez
17:38and Henry Ramirez
17:39said it.
17:39Don't be greedy
17:40offensively.
17:41Land punches,
17:42take a walk.
17:43Land punches,
17:43take a walk.
17:44As Paulie pointed out,
17:45that's just not
17:46something he does
17:47all the time.
17:48That's the difficult part.
17:50Yeah.
17:51Lopez on the ropes.
17:55Maidana coming in
17:56and connects
17:56with a right hand.
18:01See, Lopez
18:02starts to bark
18:03but then his instincts
18:04are to let go
18:05and winging shots
18:06like that.
18:07And Lopez
18:08uncorked
18:08a looping
18:09right hand
18:09that found
18:10its target.
18:12Maidana with
18:12the double jab,
18:13straight left hand
18:14of the body
18:15by Lopez.
18:16The question
18:17in this fight
18:17will be,
18:18can Lopez
18:18hurt Maidana
18:19or at least
18:20stun him
18:21to stop him?
18:22He just hurt him
18:22on the right hand.
18:28Final minute
18:29of the third round.
18:33Lopez catching
18:34some of those punches
18:34with his gloves
18:36but Maidana
18:36swarming them
18:37aggressively
18:38lovely on the attack.
18:51Maidana sneaks
18:52the jab
18:52through the guard,
18:53left hook
18:53to the body
18:54upstairs
18:54with the right hand.
18:59And Maidana
19:00beginning to
19:01and Lopez says
19:02hey,
19:03bring it,
19:03I like it,
19:04let's go
19:04and there's
19:05Lopez coming back
19:06with a combination
19:06of his own.
19:07And that's the thing
19:08and that's the thing,
19:09Lopez not shy
19:10about fighting.
19:12Forget about boxing,
19:13he's more interested
19:14in brawling.
19:15You might as well
19:18go out on your shield
19:19and Lopez says
19:20you know what,
19:21I'm a fighter.
19:22And that's exactly
19:23what he did
19:24against Alvarez.
19:25Ramirez wanted
19:26to stop it
19:26after round four.
19:27Lopez says
19:28at least allow me
19:29to go out
19:29on my shield
19:30and that's what he did.
19:32A great start
19:32to this fight.
19:35And someone
19:35who knows
19:36about great fights,
19:37Abner Marez
19:38taking in the action,
19:40the featherweight champion
19:41and a huge fan favorite
19:43in this part of the world.
19:46Early in the round,
19:48Marcos Maidana
19:49landing the power punches
19:50that are his signature.
19:53The right hand,
19:54this one straighter
19:55than normal
19:56and then a jab
19:57that hurt Lopez.
19:58And once he got Lopez
19:59on the ropes,
20:00of course he rips those shots.
20:01Lopez trying to tie him up.
20:04Later in the round though,
20:05and here's the significant
20:06thing about this,
20:07we asked,
20:08could Lopez hurt Maidana
20:09with something?
20:10Well, he landed
20:11some big power punches
20:13toward the end
20:13of that round.
20:14Punches that I think
20:16may have had
20:16some kind of impact
20:18on Maidana,
20:19that right hand specifically.
20:21And he pushed him back.
20:23If he can continue
20:23to do that,
20:24it might not even be
20:25going out on his shield.
20:26It might be coming
20:26in on his shield.
20:27Exactly, Alan.
20:28It's almost like
20:29Maidana was like,
20:29whoa, you started fighting.
20:30Yeah, what's that about?
20:31I expect this in round one.
20:32That's not right.
20:33Lopez likes to counterattack
20:35off the ropes.
20:36We've seen in the past
20:37that he possesses
20:38a dangerous right uppercut.
20:39We saw it against
20:39Victor Ortiz
20:40now utilizing the jab.
20:43Maidana responds in kind.
20:45You know,
20:45the last four opponents
20:47of Lopez
20:47have had a record
20:48of 102, 3, and 4.
20:51A combined record.
20:52He's been there
20:52against tough men.
20:53And now Lopez
20:54hurting Maidana
20:55along the ropes.
20:56Maidana trying
20:57to avoid the attack,
20:58but Lopez connected.
21:00You know what?
21:02Lopez,
21:03Lopez's main instinct
21:04is the fighter.
21:05He's having much more
21:05success fighting
21:06than he is with boxing.
21:07He might as well fight.
21:09It's better for him
21:10and it's better for us.
21:12And Lopez
21:13unleashing another
21:14three-punch combination
21:15as we take a look
21:16at the total power puncher.
21:18And now it's Lopez.
21:20Look how even this is.
21:22Yes, that's staggering.
21:24We asked,
21:25could Lopez
21:25hurt Maidana?
21:26We have our answer.
21:27He can.
21:28Incendiary ingredients
21:30in place
21:30for a combustible contest
21:32and they are blowing it up
21:33here in round four
21:34under two minutes remaining.
21:40This is the fourth fight
21:41at Welterweight
21:42for Maidana
21:42and he's finding it
21:44difficult right now
21:45against Lopez
21:46who, of course,
21:47is relatively new
21:48to this division as well.
21:50And left hook
21:50to the body.
21:51The left hook upstairs
21:52staggers Maidana.
21:54Lopez lands a right.
21:55Lopez hands it up.
21:56And Maidana
21:57going to the right.
21:59Ruling it.
22:00He didn't rule it
22:01a knockdown.
22:03Wow.
22:04But Maidana
22:05went to hold.
22:06He went to hold
22:06because he was hurt
22:07from that body shot.
22:08That's what caused him
22:09to slip to begin with.
22:10Maidana has been down
22:11on the deck
22:12five times in his career.
22:14Lopez four times
22:15and Lopez
22:16storming back here
22:18in round four.
22:26Now Maidana
22:27forced to be the boxer
22:28trying to use that jab
22:29that they've worked
22:30so hard on
22:31to keep Lopez at bay.
22:32That's the thing.
22:33It's hard to recover
22:34from those body shots.
22:34He's still recovering.
22:35I'm telling you.
22:36He's not looking
22:36to overthrow
22:37too many punches
22:38right now.
22:38I would say
22:39the crowd
22:39is trying to blow
22:40the roof off this place
22:41but there is no roof.
22:43We're in the great outdoors
22:44and fistic fireworks
22:45on display
22:46at the power punches
22:47in this round thus far.
22:49A huge edge
22:51for Lopez.
22:51Well, he has landed
22:52some amazing shots.
22:54He shut him out practically.
22:56Counter right hand there.
22:57Still showing some timing
22:58as well as the brawling.
23:00Double jab as well.
23:0130 seconds left
23:02in the round.
23:05And there's a jab
23:06from Maidana.
23:07Maidana not panicking
23:08using the jab again
23:09trying to find the distance
23:11but gets tagged twice
23:12with a straight right hand
23:13by the Riverside
23:14rocking.
23:15Two of them.
23:15And another jab
23:17and Lopez.
23:17It's all Lopez
23:18in round four.
23:20A couple of left hooks
23:21to the body.
23:22Wow.
23:24What a fight.
23:25What a night
23:26here in Carson, California.
23:28Yeah.
23:40Sit down.
23:41Let's breathe.
23:44Nice and deep.
23:45Breathe nice and deep.
23:45This is nothing.
23:48This is nothing.
23:52Calm down.
23:53And you have to go inside.
23:55You're giving him distance.
23:56If you give him distance,
23:57he's going to tag you.
24:04We look at early in the round
24:06where Lopez took over
24:09in this fight.
24:10Started landing big shots,
24:12pushed Maidana against the ropes.
24:13Now this was not called
24:15officially a knockdown,
24:17but he got hit with a big body shot there
24:21and Paulie rightfully pointed out
24:22he's probably hurt.
24:23And then we end up having
24:25and then we end up having
24:25kind of a slipping action
24:27and Maidana falling down.
24:30I hear that's where he's going down
24:32but he was hurt clearly
24:35before that all happened.
24:36Fifth round underway.
24:38Lopez was the captain
24:39of his high school
24:40cross-country track team.
24:42He won state championship
24:43his senior year
24:44but turned down
24:44a track scholarship
24:45to turn pro as a boxer.
24:47Paulie, you can never accuse him
24:48of wearing his track shoes
24:49in the ring.
24:50No, absolutely not.
24:51He's all fighter, man.
24:58Of course, Maidana's been running
24:59into a few of his shots
25:00and Maidana looking to
25:01bounce back here
25:02in round five.
25:04A man with
25:05potent punching power.
25:0730 of his 33 victories
25:09have come inside the distance.
25:10Well, don't count Maidana out.
25:12This is a guy who was down
25:12against both Victor Ortiz
25:14and Amir Khan
25:15and gave them both help.
25:16He was down three times
25:17against Ortiz.
25:20He rebounds one.
25:21Unofficial showtime scoring
25:22through four rounds.
25:25We are all in total agreement
25:27and Steve, why do we see
25:28this as a draw?
25:30Both guys have had
25:31so many great moments
25:32of power punching.
25:33I never thought Lopez
25:34could win this type of fight.
25:36Against a bigger puncher
25:38in Maidana.
25:39And Lopez beginning
25:40to assert himself again
25:41with the combination punching.
25:45Maidana coming through
25:46with the left
25:47and the right
25:48through the guard.
25:49But it's been Lopez
25:50busier
25:51and more proficient.
25:53There's a slight adjustment
25:54on Lopez's part.
25:55He's still using his legs
25:56for defense,
25:57which is good
25:57because he's throwing
25:58Maidana's timing off.
25:59Yet when he gets offensive,
26:00it's not just a jab
26:01and a right hand.
26:02He's unloading
26:03a violent combination
26:04every time.
26:05And that kind of controls
26:06Maidana.
26:08He's doing what
26:09Ramirez wanted,
26:11throwing punches
26:11that matter,
26:12then moving.
26:13And it's working
26:14for him right now.
26:15Exactly.
26:16While early on,
26:17he was moving,
26:18but he wasn't making
26:18the punches count
26:19when he was landing them.
26:20A minute and 11 left
26:21in the fifth round.
26:23A back and forth battle
26:24just as anticipated
26:26between Jose Cito Lopez
26:27and Marcos Maidana.
26:29Lopez came in
26:30two pounds
26:31under the welterweight limit.
26:32But so far,
26:35hanging in there
26:36with Maidana,
26:37who is 2-1 at 147.
26:38Remember,
26:40Lopez
26:40started lightweight,
26:43went to junior welterweight,
26:44jumped up two weight classes
26:45to face Alvarez,
26:47but looking very comfortable
26:48here at 147
26:49as Maidana
26:50back on the attack.
26:58This has been
26:58a pretty competitive round.
27:00A right hand
27:01by Maidana hurts Lopez,
27:02and that was evidence
27:03of it right there.
27:05Oh, a couple of
27:06ripping left hooks
27:08to the body.
27:08The uppercut
27:09by Maidana.
27:09Lopez on the ropes
27:10needs to get out of there.
27:13Maidana teeing off.
27:15This is what I mean
27:16about Maidana.
27:16He comes back.
27:17And Lopez
27:19unable to counter
27:20off the ropes
27:21as we've seen him
27:21do in the past.
27:22Maidana
27:23putting the leather
27:25on Lopez
27:26here in the final seconds
27:27of round number five.
27:30He rolled that right hand.
27:34An attendance record
27:36has been set
27:37tonight here
27:37at the Home Depot Center.
27:398,629 fans
27:41here to watch
27:42these welterweights
27:43and boy,
27:44have they gotten
27:45more than their money's worth
27:47with the co-feature
27:48and of course
27:48thus far here
27:49in the main event
27:50a very electric atmosphere
27:52as we head
27:52into the corners.
27:54Don't get lazy
27:55with that jab.
27:56He's looking to time you.
27:57I need to start
27:57changing some face now, right?
27:59Lead with the right hand
28:00but I need to be
28:00changing it up, right?
28:02That's your breathing.
28:03That's your breathing.
28:04How are you feeling?
28:05Good.
28:06Good.
28:06Listen to me.
28:07Hey.
28:07Hey.
28:08Hey.
28:08See,
28:10that's the round.
28:11When you attack
28:12and then hold him
28:13because he's going
28:13to come back at you.
28:14Jab, jab.
28:16Jab, jab.
28:17And then keep hitting him
28:18with that.
28:20Keep moving.
28:20Lateral.
28:21Lateral movements.
28:22Okay?
28:22That was a good round.
28:24So, Paulie,
28:25a good round for Maidana
28:26but they want
28:27a little more footwork,
28:28a little more movement.
28:29Oh, yeah.
28:30You know,
28:30they got to keep it.
28:31They got to keep
28:32Josecito guessing.
28:33And now,
28:34what about Josecito Lopez
28:36absorbing punishment
28:37along the ropes
28:38but really showing
28:39that he is both
28:40a boxer
28:41and a brawler?
28:42Well,
28:42we talk about
28:43the right hand
28:43of Maidana
28:44but the left hook
28:45to the body
28:45helped set things up.
28:47And there's that
28:47right hand
28:48from Maidana
28:48on cue
28:49and here's a
28:49furious exchange.
28:55Lead left hook
28:55by Lopez.
28:57Maidana backs away.
28:58Still working
28:59behind the jab.
29:00Not forgetting
29:00the basic fundamental.
29:02As we take a look
29:03at our social media
29:04from Sammy J.
29:05Already a top candidate
29:07for fight of the year.
29:08There have been
29:08many of them
29:09here at the
29:09Home Depot Center
29:10and I cannot argue
29:11that point out.
29:12And a lot of great
29:13fights are edited
29:13this year in boxing
29:14but we knew
29:15this one would
29:16rank with them
29:17in terms of the brawler.
29:17Oh, and the right hand
29:19drops Lopez
29:20for the fifth time
29:21in his career.
29:25On the temple.
29:30Short-circuited
29:31his thought process.
29:34A long time left
29:35in this round.
29:38And again,
29:39he gets hurt
29:40with another right hand
29:41with another right hand
29:41and another right.
29:42Lopez is bouncing
29:43off the ropes.
29:44Maidana
29:44mulling Lopez.
29:46He's got a hold, guys.
29:47And Dr. Luma
29:49ref steps in.
29:50He has seen it out.
29:52Maidana records
29:53his 31st
29:54knockout win.
29:58I don't know
29:58that he was so hurt.
29:59I was going to say,
30:00Paulie.
30:01But you got a hold.
30:02If you're not going
30:02to punch back,
30:03you got a hold
30:03in that situation.
30:04The referee doesn't know.
30:05I will say it once
30:06and I will say it
30:07until the day I die, Al.
30:08I'd rather see it
30:09stopped one punch
30:10too soon
30:11than one punch
30:11too late.
30:12He was taking
30:13a lot of big shots.
30:15And you can certainly
30:16understand that stoppage
30:17for Marcos Maidana.
30:19A comeback victory
30:20after absorbing
30:22big punches.
30:23Fantastic
30:23night of fights
30:24culminating
30:26with a tremendous
30:27battle here
30:28as Marcos Maidana
30:29defeats the always game,
30:32the always gutsy,
30:33Josecito Lopez.
30:35And he sets himself
30:36up for a major
30:37payday at welterweight.
30:39Yeah, yeah.
30:40And maybe against you,
30:41Paulie Melodonji.
30:42You never know.
30:42And I'll tell you what,
30:43I don't think anybody's
30:44going to complain
30:44about seeing him again
30:45as a fan.
30:48Marcos Maidana,
30:49of course,
30:49a very action fighter.
30:52And that bad outing
30:54to inaugurate himself
30:56as a welterweight
30:57against Alexander.
30:58But since then,
30:58he's been very excited.
30:59I know they're
31:00in different weight classes,
31:01but could you imagine
31:02him and Lucas Matisse
31:03two Argentinians
31:04in Argentina,
31:05my man?
31:06Yeah, they're talking
31:06about that.
31:07And at some point,
31:08that is a possibility.
31:16Maidana was able
31:17to completely turn
31:18this fight around
31:20in this last round.
31:21And it was the right hand,
31:22that one to the body.
31:24But the overhand right
31:24is such a tremendous
31:25weapon for him.
31:26And in this case,
31:28it sent Lopez down.
31:29And the key to this,
31:30as we take another look at it,
31:32is that it was so early
31:33in the round,
31:34there wasn't time
31:35for Lopez to recover.
31:37The first right hand
31:38to the body,
31:38the second one to the head.
31:40Yep.
31:40Almost a double right,
31:41really, if you will.
31:43Get you thinking about it.
31:45And we look at it again,
31:47Paulie,
31:47and the power he has
31:49in that right hand
31:49is extraordinary.
31:51Yep.
31:52Oh, and it landed flush.
31:53Left hand low
31:54for Lopez.
31:55And as we pointed out
31:56and we showed you,
31:57the right to the body
31:58helped set that up.
32:00Then,
32:01Josecito Lopez,
32:02who is a brave warrior,
32:03but was getting nailed
32:05with punches
32:05like that uppercut.
32:07And wasn't holding,
32:09as Paulie pointed out,
32:10and wasn't really
32:11punching back.
32:13And I think
32:13the fact that he was
32:15stumbling and getting
32:16that last right hand
32:17gave...
32:17Right stoppage.
32:18Yep.
32:19Gave Lumarrette the idea
32:20that this fight
32:21should be stopped.
32:22And I think it would be
32:23hard to argue with this
32:24at this juncture.
32:27And...
32:27Maidana was lighting up Lopez.
32:30The overhand right
32:31of Maidana,
32:32if that punch gets in
32:33against you
32:34and you're 140
32:35or 147 pounds,
32:36you've got a problem.
32:37And Lopez did.
32:38What a tremendous fight.
32:40And that young man,
32:41Lopez,
32:42is a very,
32:43very game fighter.
32:44But the 31st knockout
32:46for this man,
32:47Marcos Maidana,
32:49caps off a memorable
32:50night of fights.
32:52Let's go
32:53to Jim Gray
32:56with this report.
32:57Hey, Mo,
32:58I just spoke to the referee,
32:59Dr. Lou Morett.
33:00He said that he felt
33:01he had to stop the fight
33:02because he felt
33:03that Lopez was just
33:04taking too many punches,
33:05that his hands were coming down,
33:06and that he wasn't fighting back.
33:08And he felt as though
33:09he was one or two punches away
33:10from really getting hurt.
33:12Mo?
33:13Thanks a lot, Jim.
33:16We are ready
33:17with the official decision.
33:19Let's throw it up
33:20to Joe Martinez.
33:22Ladies and gentlemen,
33:23before we make it official,
33:25please,
33:25one more time,
33:26put your hands together
33:27for the true spirit
33:28that was displayed
33:29inside the boxing ring tonight.
33:31We had two true warriors
33:32going toe-to-toe
33:33for nearly six full rounds.
33:38The official time
33:39of the stoppage
33:40comes at one minute,
33:4118 seconds.
33:43Round number six,
33:44your winner by KO victory.
33:46And now,
33:46the WBA
33:47Intercontinental
33:48Welterweight Champion,
33:50Marcos
33:51El Chino
33:52Maidana.
33:57In a year that has seen
33:59the sport of boxing
34:00serve up many
34:01memorable battles,
34:03we have witnessed
34:03two more terrific tilts
34:05tonight as we take a look
34:06at the final stats.
34:07You know,
34:07both these men
34:08land power punches
34:09at a great rate.
34:10Lopez landing at 42%
34:12did have Maidana hurt
34:13at certain points
34:14in this fight.
34:15But of those 33%,
34:16110 punches landed
34:19by Maidana.
34:21The big ones
34:22were by him.
34:22You see the pain
34:23on Josecito Lopez
34:25and he's just one
34:26of those fighters,
34:27Paulie,
34:27that you can't help
34:28put root for.
34:29The heart,
34:29the guts,
34:29and I mean,
34:31can he still go down
34:31to 140?
34:32He might be able to.
34:33He weighed two pounds
34:34light yesterday.
34:35The thing is,
34:36he was never in a bad fight
34:37so you always appreciate him.
34:38All right,
34:39Jim Gray standing by
34:40with both warriors.
34:42All right,
34:43Mo,
34:43thank you very much.
34:44Marcos,
34:44congratulations to you.
34:45Felix de Jesus,
34:46will translate.
34:48How did you,
34:49how were you able
34:49to absorb so much punishment
34:51yet come back
34:52and win this fight?
34:52How did you win this fight?
34:53How did you win this fight
34:53of being able to use
34:54so many punches
34:55from the part of Josecito?
34:57Well,
34:57they did not damage me.
34:59The punches did not damage me.
35:00I did damage me.
35:01A hit that hit me
35:02hit me on the waist
35:03and I didn't let me walk.
35:06And that's why
35:07I was afraid
35:08that I was going to hit me
35:09so I was waiting.
35:10I didn't attack me.
35:12Some of the punches
35:12that he was hitting,
35:13he was controlling.
35:14It wasn't that hard.
35:14But the one that he did hit him
35:15in the left hip,
35:16that one did hurt him a bit.
35:18Did this fight go
35:19as you expected?
35:19He definitely thought
35:38that's how the fight
35:39was going to go.
35:40Although that hit,
35:41that punch he received
35:41in the left hip,
35:42that worried him a little bit.
35:43But Robert Garcia
35:44helped him out
35:44through that round
35:45and told him to keep fighting.
35:46Take a look at the monitor
35:48if you would right here.
35:50And let's take a look
35:51at the knockdown
35:51and then the stoppage.
35:52Tell us what was going on.
35:54¿Qué está pasando
35:54en este round aquÃ?
35:58Ahà fue mi primer golpe bien puesto.
36:00That was the first
36:01good punch that I gave him.
36:03Did you feel as though
36:05the stoppage was correct?
36:06Do you feel as though
36:07Lopez had nothing left?
36:09¿Tú pensaste que el referÃ
36:10paró la pelea a tiempo,
36:11que el referà estaba correcto?
36:13No sé, yo me quedé
36:15con ganas de pegarle,
36:15pero bueno,
36:16si la paró,
36:17él sabe lo que hace.
36:18Buen trabajo.
36:19He said that good job
36:20by the referee,
36:20but he still wanted
36:21to fight some more.
36:21He still wanted
36:22to hit him more punches.
36:24Let me ask you
36:25what you would like
36:25to do next.
36:26A lot of people
36:26might like to see you
36:28fight your countrymate,
36:30Lucas Matisse.
36:30Is that something
36:31you would like to do?
36:32¿Qué va a ser ahora?
36:33Mucha gente quiere ver
36:33que tú peleé
36:34contra Lucas Matisse,
36:35tu compatriota.
36:36Ajá.
36:38Bueno, sÃ,
36:38eso se viene hablando
36:39hace mucho tiempo
36:41ya esa pelea,
36:42pero no hay ninguna oferta,
36:44nada, no, no,
36:45no está nada concreto,
36:46asà que yo de eso no hablo.
36:48They have been talking
36:49about that fight
36:49for a long time,
36:50but there's nothing concrete.
36:51There hasn't been
36:51an offer made,
36:52so he doesn't know
36:53if that's going to happen.
36:54All right.
36:55Congratulations to you.
36:55¿Qué?
36:56SÃ, bueno,
36:57quiero mandarle un saludo
36:57a mi hijo yo,
36:58a mi familia,
36:59a todo Santa Fe,
37:00y bueno,
37:01a Buenos Aires
37:02y todo la Argentina.
37:03He wants to say hi
37:04to all of his family
37:05in Santa Fe, Argentina.
37:06Congratulations.
37:07All right.
37:08Yosecito,
37:08first of all,
37:09how are you?
37:09You okay?
37:10I'm doing good.
37:10I'm doing good.
37:11Buena pala, Chino.
37:12Buena pala.
37:14What did you just say
37:15and what did he say back?
37:16It's a good fight.
37:17Good fight.
37:17He's a professional.
37:18We're both professionals.
37:19We did our job in the ring
37:20and, you know,
37:21everything back to normal
37:22outside the ring.
37:23Al Bernstein
37:24and Pauly Malignaggi
37:25said during the fight
37:26that it seems to be
37:27your instinct to want to fight
37:29and when you started to fight
37:30and got on track,
37:31it seemed in the third round
37:32that you were able
37:33to hurt him
37:33and get on track.
37:35Did you feel
37:36as though you were able
37:36to change the direction
37:37of this fight
37:38and starting to control it somewhat?
37:39Yeah, I felt like
37:40I was doing pretty good.
37:42You know, really,
37:42I thought the stoppage
37:43was a little premature.
37:45You know what?
37:45Yeah, he stunned me.
37:47He hurt me a little bit
37:48but we're professionals
37:49and, you know,
37:50if they've seen us fight,
37:51they know we can fight
37:52out of little situations
37:53like that.
37:55It appeared as though,
37:56at least to Dr. Lumarrett,
37:58that you were defenseless
37:59and not fighting back.
38:00Why did you think
38:01the shot should not
38:02have been stopped?
38:04You know what?
38:04I got stunned.
38:06I got a little buzz.
38:08It happens throughout
38:09the fight.
38:09You know,
38:10I can fight my way out.
38:11If I'm not down
38:12for the count,
38:13you know,
38:13I felt like it was
38:13a little bit early.
38:14I should have let me
38:15fight it through.
38:16Let's take a look at it
38:17and tell us
38:17what was going through
38:19your mind
38:19and how you were
38:20trying to recover
38:21while this onslaught
38:21was going on.
38:22You know,
38:22he caught me
38:23with a good
38:24over right hand
38:24that stunned me.
38:26Yeah,
38:26he got me
38:27with a good
38:27over right hand
38:27that stunned me
38:28but I didn't feel
38:30like I was
38:31out of the fight.
38:32You know,
38:32I covered up,
38:33you know,
38:33but I was still
38:35in the game.
38:37You lost against Canelo
38:38moving up in weight.
38:39You moved back down
38:40now to 147.
38:41What would you like
38:41to do next?
38:42Where do you go from here?
38:43You know what?
38:43We got to go back
38:44to the drawing board
38:45but I'm a 147 pounder.
38:46This is where I belong.
38:47You know,
38:48I knew I fought
38:49one of the tougher fighters
38:50in the welterweight division.
38:51I know that
38:52and I knew
38:53what I was up against.
38:54I trained real hard
38:55and unfortunately
38:56the fight
38:58didn't go our way today.
38:59Thank you very much.
39:00We're glad you're all right.
39:01Appreciate it.
39:03Let's go up to
39:03Brian Kinney
39:04at the home's desk.
39:08Jim,
39:08thank you so much.
39:09Wow.
39:09I mean,
39:10wow,
39:10there's so much
39:11to digest.
39:11There's so much
39:12to look forward to
39:13and let's take a look
39:16first at the scores
39:17and what we had here.
39:18The judges' scores
39:18first here.
39:19Morrow and Al,
39:20you're up here with me now.
39:21Your thoughts
39:22on what you see
39:22at the time
39:22of the stoppage.
39:23Amazing.
39:24Yeah,
39:24it's interesting
39:24that Lopez winning
39:26on two of the judges'
39:27scorecards
39:27and,
39:28you know,
39:28he had good moments
39:29in many of those rounds,
39:31so,
39:31but,
39:32you know,
39:33they had him ahead
39:34on two of the scorecards,
39:35but it was a moot point.
39:40And on our unofficial scorecards,
39:42we all felt
39:43that Maidana
39:44had pushed ahead
39:46in this fight
39:47and that he was ahead.
39:49In any case,
39:50it was a very
39:50well-fought,
39:52well-contested matchup.
39:53You know,
39:53Brian,
39:54if I could interject
39:54in the interview
39:55Jim Gray did
39:56with Josecito Lopez,
39:58and we talked about it
39:58during the fight
39:59in the Alvarez fight
40:00where he wanted
40:00to be able
40:01to go out
40:01on his shield.
40:02I understand
40:03the warrior mentality,
40:04but when we look
40:05at the replays,
40:06I think it was
40:06a very good stoppage
40:07by the referee,
40:08and I understand
40:10Lopez's disappointment,
40:11but sometimes fighters
40:12have to be protected
40:13from themselves.
40:13No question about that.
40:15You heard in the interview
40:16as well with Jim Gray
40:17there with Josecito
40:18having to explain
40:19why he thought
40:20it shouldn't be stopped
40:21because he has
40:21the heart of a warrior.
40:23Let me just preface
40:23as well what I was
40:24just saying
40:25was that it really
40:26isn't amazing
40:26that Lopez could have
40:27been ahead
40:28on those scorecards
40:29given what he was doing
40:30in the middle rounds.
40:31We're going to have
40:31a full discussion
40:31on what we saw.
40:32Two stoppages there
40:33by referees,
40:34both seemingly
40:35very, very good stoppages
40:36and quick stoppages
40:37as well,
40:38and we'll look ahead
40:39at what's ahead
40:40for the winners,
40:41the guys who are
40:41in the winner's bracket
40:42as it turns out.
40:44First, though,
40:44here's what's coming up
40:45ahead in the month
40:46of June
40:46here on Showtime.
40:50Stalking and killing people.
40:52It's what I do.
40:54The one thing
40:55I've always been good at.
40:57I shot the wrong person
40:59in that trailer.
41:02Without psychopaths,
41:03mankind wouldn't exist today.
41:05There's a lot of mankind
41:06that doesn't exist
41:07because of them.
41:08Why don't you go back
41:09to your little life
41:09and pretend like
41:10everything's fine,
41:11but I can't do that
41:12because I am not like you.
41:19You got a name?
41:20Ray Donovan.
41:22Jesus, Ray Donovan?
41:24Hell yeah,
41:24you're the man.
41:26When Donovan goes down,
41:27he comes back higher.
41:28The bag
41:37or the bat.
41:48Everybody be nice.
41:49All right,
41:52let's take a look
41:53at the big night
41:53of boxing here
41:54in Carson, California.
41:56All right,
41:56so it started
41:56a little less than
41:58scintillating,
41:59but it was a good night
42:00for Jermell Charlo
42:01having to outbox
42:02a very good boxer
42:02in Demetrius Hopkins.
42:04A clear-cut decision
42:05and young Jermell Charlo
42:07is now 21-0.
42:08Good experience for Charlo
42:10and a good win.
42:10Our next fight,
42:11it was all action.
42:12Alfredo Angulo
42:13and Erislandi Lara.
42:14Lara boxing beautifully.
42:16Angulo then knocked him down
42:17in the fourth round,
42:18knocked him down
42:19in the ninth round,
42:20but in the tenth,
42:21Angulo takes a shot
42:22over the eye.
42:23Massive swelling immediately,
42:25possibly greater injury.
42:27We've yet to hear more on that.
42:28He turns his back
42:29and the fight is stopped
42:30and Erislandi Lara
42:31has a tremendous win
42:33over a very game
42:34Alfredo Angulo.
42:36And then in the main event,
42:37Marcos Maidana
42:38against Josecito Lopez.
42:40It seemed early
42:41that Maidana
42:41had way too much firepower.
42:43Josecito Lopez, though,
42:45and this is what he does,
42:46wills himself back
42:47into the fight,
42:48was hammering Maidana,
42:49but then late Maidana
42:52dropping right hands,
42:53dropping Lopez.
42:55Referee, Dr. Lou Moret,
42:56jumps in and stops it,
42:58and it is Marcos Maidana
42:59with a knockout win
43:01here tonight
43:02in Carson, California.
43:04It was scintillating.
43:05Tonight's Showtime Championship
43:06boxing will have
43:07several re-airings
43:08in case you missed
43:09any part of tonight's action
43:10or you want to watch
43:11the fights for a second time,
43:12and I think you might
43:13want to do that.
43:14Check out the replays
43:15on Showtime
43:16and Showtime Extreme.
43:19Marcos Maidana
43:19leaving a winner here tonight.
43:21Boy, he had to earn it.
43:23Some big, big shots
43:24he had to eat
43:25from Josecito Lopez.
43:26You see him shaking his hands
43:27as he had to leave
43:28tonight.
43:29Big smile there
43:30from Robert Garcia's
43:31trainer as well.
43:32Back up here now
43:33with the guys.
43:33Al, let me start with you.
43:34What's amazing to me
43:35as I try to digest
43:36all of this,
43:37we have most of
43:37Paulie's friends up here
43:38to say hello,
43:39is that there were
43:40real moments where I thought
43:41Angulo and Lopez
43:43were going to take the night,
43:44and it turned out
43:44exactly the opposite.
43:45And this is why
43:46that first fight,
43:47especially Angulo and Lara,
43:48is why you don't want
43:50to reduce fights
43:51to stereotypes.
43:52Yes, Angulo
43:53knocked him down twice,
43:54and yes, Angulo
43:55was the aggressor,
43:56but Lara was landing
43:57very pinpoint combinations
44:00as a counter puncher,
44:01and ultimately one
44:02of those left hands,
44:03and make no mistake,
44:04there was no thumbing
44:05in boxing.
44:06That was a legal punch.
44:07The thumbs are tied together,
44:08he landed a beautiful
44:09left hand,
44:10it landed on the eye,
44:11and it got Angulo
44:12out of there.
44:12And Angulo's a warrior,
44:13he would never have quit.
44:15Paulie, it's funny
44:15how you come up
44:16with these things.
44:16Well, who has been
44:17through this sort of thing?
44:18Against Miguel Cotto,
44:19you had your orbital bone
44:20broken, correct?
44:21So what can you tell us
44:22about what Angulo
44:23may have happened
44:24to him there
44:24and experienced?
44:25A lot of pain.
44:27That's what happened.
44:28You know, even if it was a thumb,
44:29I don't think it was intentional,
44:30it didn't look intentional anyway,
44:32but sometimes the thumb
44:33does get in your eye,
44:34and sometimes it lands
44:35even unintentionally.
44:35You know, nowadays
44:36we have thumbless gloves
44:37or thumb-attached gloves,
44:38unlike the old days,
44:39but still, it is possible
44:40to get thumbed accidentally.
44:42And I will say again,
44:43I'll reiterate,
44:44it's very painful.
44:44I mean, I don't knock Angulo
44:46for not wanting to continue,
44:48and I know I had
44:48that same injury,
44:49it was very tough
44:50to continue in my situation.
44:51Every individual is different,
44:52a lot of pain, though.
44:53And getting to the main event tomorrow,
44:55I mean, you could really sense
44:56where Lopez was throwing
44:57those long, strafing right hands,
45:00where it looked like
45:00Maidana was getting smaller
45:02and smaller in there
45:03before he came back.
45:03What was your sense
45:04in the ebb and flow?
45:05I thought exactly the same thing,
45:06the fact that
45:07Josecito Lopez
45:08wanted to box,
45:10but he was best
45:11at what he is at the core,
45:12a brawler, a fighter,
45:14and both of them
45:15had their moments,
45:16Maidana coming back
45:16to stop him,
45:17but I just want to
45:18take a quick moment
45:19and say,
45:20while I may be very low
45:21on the proverbial totem pole
45:22at Showtime Sports,
45:23is there any way
45:23we can hold all of our events
45:25at this venue,
45:26Ryan, please?
45:27I mean, this has been
45:28an amazing night of fights,
45:29and this venue here
45:31is absolutely perfect
45:32for boxing.
45:33The fans were amazing.
45:34There's no question.
45:34It's like a ball game
45:35out here,
45:36and it's really nice.
45:37We wanted to have a dog
45:37and watch the fights,
45:39and we did,
45:39but you are not an executive
45:40for Showtime Sports,
45:41I've just been reminded.
45:42All right,
45:43so what's next here?
45:44Give us the winner's bracket, Al.
45:45Well, you know,
45:46in the welterweight division,
45:47which is heating up,
45:48we have, of course,
45:49Pauli Malignaggi
45:49and Adrian Broner next.
45:51What Marcos Maidana
45:52has done for himself
45:53is, after that disappointing
45:55initial welterweight fight
45:57against Alexander,
45:58he has shown us
45:59that at this weight,
46:00he is a force
46:01to be reckoned with
46:02and has added,
46:02I think,
46:03a lot to that division.
46:04At 154,
46:05Lara has shown us
46:07that he can do everything.
46:08He can punch,
46:09and he can box.
46:10Lara, I guess,
46:10is a guy, Pauli,
46:11you really won't want
46:13to mess with, right?
46:13If you're thinking Cotto,
46:14if you're thinking Austin Trout,
46:16guys who can really box,
46:16but that guy can box,
46:17and as Al said,
46:18he's really throwing
46:19meaningful shots
46:20straight up the middle.
46:21Intelligent boxer,
46:22a lot of poise,
46:23even through that.
46:24That was a hellacious pace
46:25at times,
46:25but he stayed calm,
46:26he stayed poised,
46:27and he got his man
46:28out of there.
46:29He definitely belongs
46:29to be mentioned
46:30among those guys
46:32like Cotto,
46:32like Canelo,
46:33and like all those other guys.
46:33But I ask again,
46:34and I said it earlier, Brian,
46:35during the broadcast,
46:36Cotto is coming back
46:37later this year,
46:38and yet he's coming off
46:39back-to-back losses,
46:40albeit against Floyd Mayweather
46:41and Austin Trout.
46:42Lara said before the fight,
46:43if he wins,
46:43he wants Cotto.
46:44I'm just wondering,
46:45does Cotto want Lara?
46:46It's a tough schedule.
46:47It's a tough schedule.
46:48I wouldn't advise Cotto
46:50to take on
46:50such tough fighters
46:51first fight back.
