00:42Introducing the Italian stallion, Giovanni Flesch-Tarisi.
00:49And his opponent across the ring on my left, the defending world champion,
00:59fighting out of the red corner, entering the ring wearing blue trunks,
01:03fighting out of and representing Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.
01:09He weighed in at the super lightweight limit of 140 pounds.
01:13His tremendous record represents one of the best in boxing today, with 93 wins.
01:20Only one defeat, one draw, with 80 wins coming by way of knockout.
01:26Here is the five-time world champion in three weight divisions.
01:29Please welcome one of boxing's great champions,
01:32the current WBC super lightweight champion of the world.
01:35Demos la bienvenida al gran campeón mexicano,
01:40introducing Julio César Chávez.
01:50Once again, here's the referee in charge, Joe Cortés.
01:53All right, caballeros, ya yo le di las reglas en camerinos a los dos.
01:57Quiero una pelea limpia.
01:59Ya sabe, cuando yo diga break, quiero que me dé un break limpio.
02:02Bense la mano, suelte a los dos.
02:04Okay.
02:05Okay.
02:10The latest up-to-the-minute odds from the Caesars Palace Sportsbook.
02:16Chávez, a 4-1 favorite.
02:17A man who has relied on the accumulative effect over the years.
02:21Tremendous heart, granite chin, hard head.
02:23Usually gets stronger in the later rounds.
02:26Giovanni Parisi, as Ferdi mentioned,
02:28built along the lines of Frankie Randall,
02:31the only man to beat Chávez.
02:32Chávez fights a lot like Randall, relentless in and out.
02:35Here we go, round one, scheduled for 12
02:37for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship.
02:40Chávez in the blue trunks and Parisi in the white trunks.
02:45I'll tell you, Steve, the odds are only 4-1.
02:46They were 6.5-1.
02:47They've come down some late money on the Challenger.
02:51Parisi uses the angles.
02:54He switches.
02:54He's very motivated.
02:56Had his lightweight title stripped.
02:58He has gone 10 rounds only two times, 12 rounds only twice.
03:03Would you say he needs to get busy early?
03:05Because the deeper this fight goes, the stronger Chávez gets.
03:08It's a good possibility.
03:10Steve Chávez has always been a notoriously slow starter,
03:13but you never can tell.
03:15If the young champion, excuse me, the young challenger has a good first half,
03:19he may want to just take this and keep winning.
03:21And Ferdi, of course, Chávez, an outstanding finisher
03:24when he gets an opponent in trouble.
03:25The questions, are his skills eroding finally after 95 fights?
03:29Well, they're certainly not what they were,
03:31but that's still top of the heap.
03:33And I'm left with a lot of gym rats, old guys, hated guys that have big, long necks like Parisi.
03:39They say, can't take a punch.
03:40When they look at the long, thin neck on Parisi, they go, mm-mm, can't take a punch.
03:44Well, we'll see, because he's going to be tested by Chávez, who does punch.
03:47There's a good right hand by Chávez, right on a button.
03:50Well, he asked Parisi for his approach, his strategy.
03:53He replied, I'm walking into the ring, believing in myself.
03:56Whatever happens after the bell will happen.
03:58I have to see what Chávez has.
03:59It certainly seems he's settled in on using that left hand as a rangefinder
04:04and a paw, holding his right hand back, trying to stay on outside.
04:09But it certainly isn't a good jab.
04:10It's not a hard jab.
04:11It's not even, it's a testing feeling, where are you, jab.
04:14You know, it's like nothing jab.
04:23Is Parisi going in looking for the knockout?
04:26Parisi said ever so cautiously to us,
04:28there's always the possibility, but he thinks, yes,
04:31even here in Las Vegas, he can win a decision.
04:35We have seen some strange scoring.
04:37Hold on, we're not going to call that intro.
04:38Let's go.
04:39Cortez able to speak Spanish,
04:41which one of them can understand,
04:43and the other half can understand.
04:45Most Italians are so close to Italian,
04:47they can understand what they're saying.
04:48Well, these two guys know the rules,
04:49and they basically know what's going on,
04:51so I don't think the talking's going to be too much either way.
04:53Well, he asked Parisi how he keeps Chavez in check.
04:58He said, make sure I don't hurt my hands.
05:00He's got a hard head.
05:02Parisi has had some problems with his hands in the past.
05:04You know, I've seen a lot of scars on the fighter's hands from surgery,
05:07including my own,
05:07and he has had some serious problems.
05:10I don't see this as a very interesting first round.
05:12I think it's a typical Chavez.
05:14Just come in, see what you got,
05:15and let the other guy throw some things,
05:17but not very impressive right now.
05:18Parisi, although he's winning the round,
05:20because he's doing the only fighting.
05:23Less than 10 seconds in the opening round.
05:28Parisi came into the fight wearing that medallion
05:31on his neck and tribute to his mom.
05:34Let's go over to Jim Gray.
05:35Jim?
05:36Okay, thank you, Steve.
05:37Luis Santana was taken to Valley Hospital
05:39after his fight with Terry Norris.
05:41Dr. Flip Homansky has been in contact with the hospital.
05:44Can you tell us and give us an update on Santana's condition?
05:47Luis will be admitted to the hospital for observation.
05:50He's had a CAT scan that was normal.
05:52He's had an emergency brainwave study,
05:55an EEG, that's being read right now.
05:58His lab work is normal.
05:59It will strictly be for observation.
06:03He took a good punch.
06:04This is not the same situation that happened in Mexico,
06:08but he is alert and talking.
06:10What you're telling us is he's fine, basically.
06:12We hope he's going to be fine.
06:13He will be in for observation.
06:15Doctor, we appreciate you taking the time.
06:16We are told by Grant Elvis Phillips,
06:18who is Luis Santana's manager,
06:20that they will no longer fight Terry Norris.
06:22They consider him to be a dirty fighter
06:24and want nothing else to do with him.
06:26Let's go back to Steve.
06:27All right, thank you, Jim.
06:28Norris disqualified at the end of round three
06:30earlier tonight for hitting after the bell.
06:32The bell he says he did not hear,
06:34so Santana retains the title on his back.
06:37I think that's how he won it.
06:40Exactly.
06:41He'll make a whole career of this.
06:43Unbelievable.
06:44Round two.
06:45I don't know if it's up to him
06:46to decide whether he fights him or not,
06:48but I don't think the commission's going to make him
06:49fight him after two disqualifications like that.
06:52I think that's it for Terry.
06:53He's going to go out and start chopping on some other wood
06:56and some other doors.
06:57Good right hand by Chavez
06:59after an uneventful first round.
07:02Chavez pressing the action a little more
07:04than normal here in the early rounds.
07:06He's coming forward quite actively.
07:09We talked about Chavez's hard head.
07:12Once, when he was x-rayed,
07:13doctors actually found that he had
07:15an unusually thick cranium,
07:17which may account for the fact
07:18that he doesn't even wince
07:19when he gets hammered to the head.
07:21Unless Frankie Randall's hit.
07:24Well, even then, he smiled when he got up.
07:26But I'll tell you one thing.
07:27I must be getting soft,
07:28because I'm getting so used to seeing Chavez.
07:30I'm starting to get a nostalgia,
07:32hoping that he keeps on fighting
07:34because he's such a beautiful thing to watch.
07:36I'm thinking, uh-oh, this is coming to an end.
07:38This guy is so good.
07:39Yes, he says the final journey
07:41will conclude at the end of the year.
07:43After this one, four more to reach 100 fights.
07:47Chavez fighting for the 96th time.
07:49One-third of his fights
07:50have been championship fights, 32 of them.
07:53And he says you'll see...
07:54Oh, down goes...
07:56Parisi!
07:57That fits with a jab.
07:58It was the shotgun jab.
07:59He timed him stepping in.
08:00Parisi got his footcourt under him.
08:02He slammed him with the jab, Bernie.
08:03It's exactly what we saw before.
08:05A guy coming in got hit by...
08:06And a very short one at that.
08:08Now let's see if Chavez
08:10shows an interest to get out of here.
08:12He is one of the great finishers of all time.
08:15Let's see if he can take advantage
08:16and not let Parisi off the hook.
08:18Parisi trying to compose himself
08:22after the knockdown.
08:26Looks to be more of a flash knockdown
08:27than a brutal, debilitating knockdown,
08:29but you never can tell.
08:31Not the first time he's been knocked down.
08:34Certainly nothing good comes from it.
08:36At the very least, his confidence is a little shaken.
08:38He knows a little tiny jab
08:39can put him on the seat of his pants.
08:41So Julio Cesar Chavez
08:44putting Giovanni Parisi
08:46on the canvas here in round two.
08:50Flashing punch by Chavez that missed,
08:53but you could see his intention
08:54was to get out of here early.
08:57It's hard to say prior to the knockdown.
08:58Chavez said,
08:59you'll see a better, stronger Julio tonight.
09:01That was right on cue.
09:02Less than 30 seconds to go in round two.
09:08Parisi not even getting close to him.
09:10I mean, he's just not doing anything.
09:12It looked like the punches
09:13are just absolute water.
09:16Right now, he's in a very defensive mode.
09:18He's trying to stay away from the big shots,
09:19roll, slip,
09:21just basically pull with that right,
09:22shoot him at left hand.
09:23Once in a while, nice right.
09:25Final seconds of round two.
09:28Oh, look at that shot from the body.
09:32Chavez turning it off at the bell.
09:34All right.
09:35All right.
09:36All right.
09:37All right.
09:40Let's go to the Carisi corner,
09:43our translator, Maria Santini.
09:44Hello.
09:45Hello.
09:45Hi, Giovanni.
09:47Tranquillo.
09:48Venichina.
09:50Stay tranquillo.
09:51Non fermati davanti.
09:53Usa di piu quals sinistro.
09:55Debi usare di piu sinistro.
09:56Use the left hand more.
09:58Nice.
10:00And wait two seconds,
10:02and then go up after him.
10:04And let's take a look at that knockdown.
10:15This is the shotgun jab.
10:17Now, not only is the jab there,
10:19but his legs have collapsed under him.
10:20It's almost a perfect thing.
10:23That's kind of a flash knockdown.
10:24I don't think he even sees it.
10:25I think he blinks and it just hits him.
10:26You're right.
10:27Legs caught under him.
10:28Flash knockdown,
10:29but he's letting you know the power's there.
10:31He's shot this.
10:31You know, it's more than that.
10:32I think he's letting him go
10:33because he wants to punish him.
10:34There was a lot of ugly feeling in the way
10:37because he said something ugly
10:38about Mexican fighters
10:39and his country, Mexico.
10:41And, you know,
10:42Chavez never gets mad.
10:43They translate it in a strange way.
10:45Chavez all of a sudden gets irate.
10:47He wants to beat him.
10:48And we remember, of course,
10:49what Chavez did to Greg Haugen.
10:52Well, good left hand by Parisi.
10:54That in front of over 136,000
10:56at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City
10:58after Haugen had a few things to say.
11:01Yeah, this is not one of the guys
11:02you want to get mad in.
11:03They had words sort of at the end of the round
11:05when Chavez fired off two punches after the bell.
11:09So round three,
11:10Parisi knocked down a minute 23
11:12into round two
11:13in flash knockdown fashion.
11:16Parisi throwing better combinations now.
11:18Landed a clean left hook
11:19and a couple little short right hands on the inside.
11:21You see there he's trying to rip the right upper card.
11:22He wants to get his pound of flesh
11:23and get some respect back.
11:24He's punching much harder.
11:27It's not that powder puff stuff anymore.
11:28And Chavez...
11:29And he's got to, to get to keep Chavez up.
11:30He's got to.
11:31Beginning to punish Parisi.
11:35Parisi trying to stay away.
11:38A backlash by Parisi and Chavez
11:40indicating to Joe Cortez that's the case.
11:43But it was Cortez cautioning Chavez
11:45for a low blow.
11:47It almost way south of the border.
11:48Now, Chavez going to the party.
11:54Now starts the attack on the sides.
11:56And that's the stuff that crunches you in.
11:58Those liver shots.
12:00The liver shots.
12:01The shots to both sides.
12:02Left or right.
12:02And it doesn't make any difference for him.
12:04Here's the jab by Chavez.
12:05Let's see if it sets up the right.
12:09When he is on, he is the complete package.
12:11Julio Cesar Chavez.
12:13He's so systematic with what he does.
12:15He takes you and breaks you down piece to piece,
12:17piece by piece.
12:17And then takes the whole thing
12:19and puts it all together all round long.
12:21Parisi may be very motivated
12:23having that title strip,
12:24but it's so difficult against the fabled Chavez.
12:32Lunging right, but Parisi showing some defense.
12:36Able to slip away.
12:38Poying right hand by Parisi.
12:43Chavez in command.
12:45Good duck on a move.
12:46Chavez looking very quick.
12:50Chavez just looks like he wants to be in there
12:52a little bit longer before he opens up.
12:54And he has not really started throwing the leather
12:57that he's capable of.
13:00Yeah, the guys are both very cute on the inside.
13:02You see elbows, you see shoulders,
13:03little forearm,
13:04both very cute on the inside.
13:06Well, you know that Chavez knows every trick in the book.
13:08Now, that guy will hit you with everything
13:10but he's bloody button.
13:11I mean, he is a master.
13:12He's slick.
13:14He's beautiful.
13:16Parisi, Olympic gold medalist,
13:18as that's his biggest accomplishment.
13:21And right now, Chavez continues to have his way.
13:24He's starting to dig a good left hook
13:25to the body on Parisi.
13:26He's hitting him just above and on the hip,
13:28even once in a while,
13:29a little below, like there.
13:56Buffalo says,
13:57don't go crazy to chase him
13:58to try to hit him.
13:59You're winning the fight.
13:59Don't go crazy chasing him
14:00until the fight evens out.
14:03Then go get him.
14:07All right, this is the punching of Chavez,
14:09which sometimes travels south of the border.
14:11Doesn't do it intentionally,
14:12but there it is.
14:13And boy, is that perfect.
14:15Perfectly bad.
14:16Whoa.
14:17I don't know how that guy stood up.
14:19I mean, Parisi could have just dove for the gambas there
14:21and taken a nice little count.
14:23Round four for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship,
14:35scheduled for 12.
14:36Parisi went down in the second,
14:38showing no ill effects, though.
14:40In the next round,
14:43Parisi's chin coming in suspect.
14:45He's been knocked down six times prior to tonight,
14:48three times in one fight.
14:50In his only defeat,
14:51a third-round KO to Antonio Rivera in 1990,
14:54his first fight following an eight-month layoff.
14:57Are you telling me that the long-neck theory holds?
14:59Guys with long necks like this don't take good punches?
15:01You are correct, sir.
15:03Well, you know, structurally,
15:03it's obviously a little bit of a difference,
15:05and it does appear that that does have an effect.
15:08Well, it's because your head swivels back and forth,
15:11and that's what knocks you out.
15:12Guys thick-necked you that hold their neck down
15:14have much better chances.
15:17In viewing, Parisi Chavez said
15:19he's a good boxer.
15:21He's very sharp, but not in my category,
15:24and so far, living up to advertisement.
15:28Well, at least Parisi's going to the body,
15:29trying to get something to slow down Chavez.
15:33Break.
15:33What he's also doing,
15:34he's trying to time Chavez on the march
15:36when he comes in with that uppercut.
15:37He's trying to slip a punch and throw the uppercut,
15:39but I think what he has to do,
15:41he's a stiffer jab and a couple more combinations,
15:43he's going to ward off the champion.
15:45Parisi does have 22 knockouts in his 29 wins,
15:49but certainly hasn't fought the kind of people
15:51Chavez has fought.
15:56Chavez digging to the body.
15:59Stalking.
16:01Swarming.
16:02Being pushed away by the shoulder of Parisi.
16:06There's that pouring jab.
16:07That probing jab by Chavez.
16:10Every one of those is landing,
16:11and pretty soon it will start taking effect.
16:13You get dizzy from that,
16:15because this guy doesn't just put a little jab in there,
16:17he puts a jab in there.
16:18His punches are punishing.
16:20They constantly inflict damage
16:22that shows up two, three rounds later,
16:24and that's when fighters all of a sudden fold.
16:27Chavez looking to pour down there,
16:28but missing with the right,
16:29the elusive move.
16:30It was Parisi.
16:31Right hand by Parisi.
16:33Nice, beautiful, right on the button.
16:35Chavez walked right into it,
16:36but right on the head.
16:37That's the kind that Randall used
16:38to put him on a seat of his pants,
16:40and that was a surprise.
16:41The only time he's ever been on the campus.
16:44Parisi's moved up from a lighter weight,
16:45so he's not going to have the same power as Randall,
16:47who's steady and has been here for quite some time.
16:49He is the former WBO lightweight champ.
16:51Oh, what a nice left jab by Chavez.
16:53And then for political reasons,
16:55Parisi was stripped of the title.
16:58I like to have that sentence written out,
17:00then, punctuated.
17:01We've heard it before.
17:03Also, less than 30 seconds to go in round four.
17:09Again, Parisi able to duck on her.
17:11There's that left elbow by Chavez
17:12that Joe Cortez takes exception to.
17:14Oh, how'd you like that, Bobby?
17:22How'd you like that?
17:24That was a nice move.
17:25Scramble up your spaghetti.
17:26Whoa, right on the Loponso.
17:28Left hook there by Chavez,
17:30but unfortunately,
17:31Fabrizio glancing blow as the bell sent.
17:36Let's go over to Jim Gray.
17:38Thank you, Steve.
17:39I'm joined by Tommy Hearns,
17:41the hitman who displayed probably the greatest fight
17:43ever at Caesars Palace.
17:45Definitely the greatest fight at Caesars Palace.
17:46One of the great fights of all time
17:47back on April 15th, 1985
17:49against marvelous Marvin Hagler.
17:51Those years have flown by.
17:52What do you remember about that night?
17:53That was a heck of a night for me.
17:55It was a memory night
17:57that's constantly being on my mind all the time.
18:00It's just something I hope and pray
18:02that one day I can just do away with the memory.
18:06Marvin's here tonight.
18:07In fact, he's commentating on Showtime.
18:08Have you spoken to Marvin?
18:10Me and Marvin speak,
18:11but we know there's still more fighting going on.
18:13But we just speak because
18:14we made each other a lot of money that time.
18:17So we speak because we're friends now.
18:19Guy who's a little bit older than you, Larry Holmes,
18:21going for a championship tonight.
18:23What's your take on the championship bout coming up?
18:25I think it's going to be a very interesting fight.
18:27I'm looking forward to the fight.
18:28The fight is something I think
18:30the Republic's looking forward to, too.
18:32Tommy, great to see you.
18:33Thanks, man.
18:33All right, let's go back to Steve.
18:35Thank you, Jim.
18:36Round five.
18:37This is the scene of so many historic championship fights
18:40over the years.
18:40Hagler-Hearns, Hagler-Leonard.
18:43Leonard-Hearns, one and two,
18:44and so on and so forth.
18:45Let's see.
18:46Now, if Chavez can continue to command this fight,
18:50backs Parisi up.
18:51I know Tommy Hearn's a great fighter,
18:53a multi-divisional world champion,
18:55somebody who I tried for quite some time
18:56to match and get in the ring with,
18:58but it just never came to pass.
18:59He was teasing me before.
19:00He said, you know,
19:01maybe we can fight it over heavyweight
19:02if there's seven figures around.
19:03Yeah, right.
19:04Money talks.
19:05Good right hand there by Chavez.
19:07Beautiful duck under move by Chavez.
19:12Chavez just appears physically
19:14way too strong for Parisi right now.
19:16Parisi can't hold his ground,
19:17and when Chavez can come forward
19:19to be effective,
19:19he's almost unbeatable.
19:21Well, there was some question,
19:22and apparently the fire is still there
19:24as far as Julio Cesar Chavez.
19:27Well, the fire never went out.
19:28The reflex is dull a little bit,
19:30but the fire will never go out in this guy.
19:32This guy will be 60 years old
19:33when he's still got that championship heart.
19:36He says he'll wrap it up
19:38by the end of 95
19:39with 100 fights no matter what.
19:41But we would not doubt it
19:43if he fought 101, would we?
19:45That's just the way of boxing.
19:47He wants to take Randall again,
19:49perhaps in late summer
19:50or in September.
19:53Parisi has switched to Southwood now,
19:54being actually a little more effective.
19:56Maybe he's looking for a little bit
19:57of a Pernaud-Whitaker-type magic.
19:59I think he's surprised Julio.
20:01It took him a minute to figure out
20:02that he had switched around
20:03and he got hit a couple of shots.
20:05Not hard, but he got hit.
20:07This is an excellent defensive display
20:09by Chavez.
20:12Bloods on the right nostril of Parisi.
20:14Yeah, I was going to say
20:14bleeding from the nose.
20:16Not much, but bleeding.
20:18He's been bouncing jabs
20:19off that long nose of his.
20:22Figures to get a little blood coming out.
20:24There's a right hand,
20:26straight flush on the face by Chavez.
20:28Parisi couldn't duck away from that one.
20:30Right hand, overhand right there
20:33by Chavez.
20:34Made contact.
20:36Now they exchange in a low blow by Parisi.
20:38Yeah, that's one of the unpleasant things
20:41about Chavez.
20:42Chavez has been pounding this guy
20:44below the belt.
20:45Parisi's never said a word.
20:46He got hit once.
20:47He's making all kinds of faces
20:48at the referee.
20:49You know, come on.
20:52Be a sport.
20:58Chavez with a lunging right hand.
21:00Chavez is starting to solve
21:02that Southport style now of Parisi
21:04and same things in suing
21:06that did when he was in writing.
21:08And blood flying from the nose of Parisi.
21:11I never quit thinking
21:13that people would swap back and forth.
21:15Oh, very nice shot by Parisi.
21:17A sweeping left hook by Parisi
21:20as he was spinning around
21:21and caught Chavez by surprise.
21:24Final seconds, round five.
21:26At the best punch tonight
21:28by the challenger.
21:35And again, we take it
21:36into Parisi's corner,
21:37our interpreter, Maria Santini.
21:39She's asking for a letter right now.
22:02She's not that much said.
22:03Let's take a look at this methodical beating
22:18that's beginning to pile up.
22:21Injury on the face.
22:22Oh, look at that.
22:23Nice, nice right hand
22:24right on the big button of Parisi.
22:27Parisi's bleeding already
22:28from those understandably wide.
22:30And now comes Chavez.
22:32It always looks like
22:33he's going to shoot out of there
22:33like a rocket.
22:34I never saw it.
22:35It's like an old Hollywood movie.
22:36It looks like he's ready
22:37to just shoot out there
22:38and start getting started.
22:39He is ready like a caged lion,
22:41ready to burst out at Parisi.
22:44Not much said at all
22:45in that corner
22:46by head trainer Giovanni Boccellini.
22:49The strength is starting to mount
22:51and it's just getting to be too much.
22:52The punches, the damage,
22:53these debilitating effects
22:55that has taken place on Parisi.
22:56And he really looks like now
22:58it's more of a matter of survival.
22:59I don't know that
23:00he has enough to hurt Chavez
23:01and he's seeming to realize that.
23:04Round six scheduled for 12.
23:06It has been all Julio Cesar Chavez.
23:10Continues to press the attack.
23:12I don't know.
23:12I'm getting the pace.
23:13I don't know of any boxer
23:14watching him in the last 10 years
23:15who seems to enjoy boxing
23:17as much as Chavez.
23:18Of course, if you're the best there is
23:19and it's an all one-way thing,
23:21I guess you could enjoy it.
23:22But he seems to like to be here.
23:23He says,
23:24I still like boxing
23:25but I get tired of it sometimes.
23:27I've been fighting professionally now
23:28for 15 years.
23:29I want to retire
23:30with full capabilities
23:32and with all my faculties.
23:37Again, he moves Parisi back
23:39but not much damage there.
23:42Oh, a little bit of a low blow
23:44by Chavez there.
23:46He'll hit you anywhere he can.
23:49Now he goes upstairs, Chavez.
23:51Oh, a big right hand by Chavez.
23:53Flush.
23:56Parisi leaning with the chin.
23:58Right now, Parisi is staying
23:59as a southpaw.
24:00It seems to suit him.
24:02This is where he wants to be
24:03because he has not gone back
24:04to being a righty at all.
24:06I don't think he's done him any good.
24:08I don't think he's done
24:09particularly better than before.
24:10He's still taking an awful lot of shots
24:12right on the nose.
24:13Well, he does switch a la Hagler
24:16but how many people can get away
24:17with it like Marvelous Mark?
24:24Oh, body shots.
24:26Thunderous.
24:27Now he goes upstairs, Chavez.
24:28Come on, come on, come on.
24:29Again, Parisi complaining
24:30he used the elbow
24:31but Cortez is fight off.
24:33I think he used the elbow
24:34to shoulder and his head.
24:35Yes.
24:36I don't think he missed
24:37any part of himself.
24:38He hit him with everything
24:39that was movable.
24:41Full repertoire.
24:42Reminded me of Benny Brisco
24:43middle interview.
24:44He had extra hands.
24:45Yeah, Benny was a great fighter.
24:47Octopus-like.
24:49Chavez continues to smother Parisi.
24:54Blood all over the white trunks
24:55of Parisi.
24:56See, the first thing I would do
24:57is if I'm fighting Chavez
24:58I wouldn't wear white trunks.
25:00No.
25:01He's finally switched back
25:02to being an orthodox boxer.
25:03Let's see what happens.
25:05Watch the punches
25:06at the back of the head
25:07says Joe Cortez to Chavez.
25:08Final seconds, round six.
25:24This for the WBC
25:25super lightweight championship.
25:27Ooh, what a nice little uppercut
25:28that was, Bobby.
25:29well hoping to strike a blow for the older generation let's go behind the
25:38scenes a very relaxed 45 year old Larry Holmes in his dressing room 13 and 1 in
25:45his second comeback we're gonna have to get Larry a fee for broadcasting very
25:53nice thanks for the plug is the trademark jab still effective is he inspired by
26:04George Foreman we'll find out shortly in our main event coming up as he takes on
26:09the WBC heavyweight champ Oliver McCall here at the Caesars Palace outdoor arena
26:14capacity 15,200 and it is nearly filled to capacity so we are set now for round
26:29number seven we are halfway through Julio Cesar Chavez the champion thoroughly in
26:35control Parisi comes out with a couple of shots nice left hook to the body Doug
26:44here he's trying but it just it's just not working he's not strong enough and
26:48Chavez is just going through his stuff well relentless would probably be the
26:52best way to describe Julio Cesar Chavez he has not let up on the pressure
26:56well Parisi fighting much harder right now as if trying to establish something
27:00different than a one-way beating look at that nice little in for cut by Parisi he's
27:05trying hard oh overhand right there by Chavez Parisi trying to answer back but
27:12getting nothing you can watch Chavez when he counters these those combinations no
27:16matter where they are one of those counters winds up being that left hook to the
27:19belly on the side it's almost automatic it's almost automatic quick unofficial check of
27:24the scorecards I have Chavez way ahead 59 54 my scorecard concurs only the first
27:30round they give to Parisi then he got knocked down in the second so that point
27:32got destroyed by well we mentioned earlier that Parisi kind of reminds
27:40people of Frankie Randall the only man to beat Chavez what is he not doing he's not
27:44moving away after he punches he's standing still in front of him getting hit
27:48Frankie would and Parnell would give him angles he doesn't stand in front then
27:52they punch and then they move around him and then they punch and then they move
27:54around him this guy's not moving at all he's in front of him not only that but I think that
27:58he's only ran the like on his offensive modes I don't think defensively I don't
28:02think inside I don't think structurally he's sounding up inside strong to keep in
28:06there and on top of that he loses gas historically after the sixth and seventh
28:11rounds while Chavez gets stronger so Parisi in all kinds of difficulty well if
28:16that's true then he has a bleak prospect for the rest of this evening because up to
28:20now he's just had a one-way beating again low blows by Chavez oh left hook by Chavez
28:25just taking his time now doing what he wants there's no real pressure
28:28so he's just doing what he wants
28:57less than 30 seconds round two
29:07bloody nose of Parisi and a lot of his blood is on the
29:15strokes
29:18right so
29:19I got that great jab of Chavez Chavez's starting to land right hand in the inside
29:31That much is being said except you're doing very well, keep that up, there's not any
30:00instruction positive to do anything differently, a little water saying absolutely nothing.
30:08Buffalo Martin usually has good instruction if he needs it, but if he doesn't he says nothing
30:12can change.
30:17He's a little bit better.
30:32Parisi looking like a beaten man there in more ways than one.
30:36Looks like psychologically just very, very down.
30:39Meanwhile, Chavez again ready to charge right out.
30:41When they get around eight scheduled for 12, you got to have good speed, you got to have
30:45good lateral movement, that's what you need against Chavez, but we haven't seen much of
30:49that here from the challenger Parisi.
30:51Parisi's back to being a southpaw, Ferdi.
30:54Yeah, he does, he just flipped right back there again.
30:57Now he's just throwing the right hand, loading up Parisi, and Mr. Chavez is countering.
31:07Oh, a right uppercut by Chavez, right on the chin.
31:17It's a great timing shot too, slipped a punch, came up under on the inside, right on the body.
31:22And if you're listening to something that sounds like half a sob and half a whimper, that's
31:26Parisi, that's the way he's reacting to every punch or throwing a punch.
31:30He's making a little noise, it looks like he could break out crying anymore.
31:35It's just that his sound, his voice is very high, and he has that sort of sobbing sound.
31:40We got Chavez inside doing damage.
31:45Those short, crisp uppercuts taking their toll, and the body shots.
31:51The accumulative effect of Julio Cesar Chavez once again.
31:56I'll tell you, Parisi though, showing heart and courage standing in there.
32:00Yeah, he does.
32:02Halfway through the eighth round.
32:04And that's how you know how he's losing this fight totally, because we're reduced to saying,
32:08but the only good thing we can say is that sure he's taking the beating in a nice gentlemanly fashion.
32:15He's landed maybe one or two clean heart punches on Chavez.
32:20Right now he's resorted to kind of jump in from angle to angle, run around, step around.
32:25There's nothing being affected whatsoever, Steven.
32:27He's reaching for things now.
32:32Julio Cesar Chavez looking for his 94th win at the age of 32.
32:3793, one and one with 80 knockouts.
32:39Looking for his 30th win in championship fights.
32:42One draw, one loss.
32:46Finally taste to defeat his 91st fight.
32:50Losing to Frankie Randall.
32:54Seven fights ago, and then he thought he lost his first fight when he met the slip, Pernell Whitaker.
32:59Left hook there by Parisi, but glancing off the head of Chavez.
33:05The strength factor is just too much here.
33:07Chavez can just walk in when he wants to.
33:08And Parisi can't really hold him off.
33:10See, that's what Frankie Randall could do.
33:11Frankie Randall could stand him off and punch him off from time to time.
33:14That's why he was so effective.
33:17Many feel that it would be only the just thing to give Randall another shot.
33:21Chavez doing a great job with that lead right.
33:25Now inviting Parisi in, almost taunting him.
33:30The fans reacting.
33:34Let's follow Parisi into his corner.
33:36Again, the translation of Maria Santini.
33:46The speed of it means breathe well.
33:48Try to breathe as best as possible.
33:53He just wants to be dried off right now and put some ice on him.
34:06You think he's expecting to get a get well card from Italy?
34:10Oh, he's playing here.
34:11Nothing's happening in that corner, Maria.
34:16Let's watch the uppercut.
34:18You know, look at that nice little insight.
34:20Oh, God, is this guy a master?
34:22And Chavez, again, getting a little mad and said,
34:25come on, come on, let's get this thing on.
34:28Come on, come on.
34:29And the other guy said, not yet.
34:31Would you ever think, Steve,
34:33would you ever think that the most exciting fight
34:35was the heavyweight fight we just saw?
34:37And this had figured to be such an exciting, fast fight.
34:39It's fast becoming a yaw.
34:41Bobby said earlier that he was...
34:44It raised his eyebrows.
34:46The pace, the furious pace of the Selden Tucker fight.
34:50And now, this is a totally different story for lesser weight.
34:54So, Parisi urging Chavez to start winging punches.
34:57That might be his only hope now,
34:59to land that one big blow as we go into round nine.
35:02You see, there's no quitting.
35:03Parisi steps around,
35:04even though he's absorbing a lot of punch.
35:06And here he is tearing in the left hands,
35:08doing what he can,
35:09but it's just not strong enough.
35:10The strength factor is too great here,
35:12the power is too great,
35:13and the ability to absorb and ward off is too much.
35:15We've had one knockdown.
35:17Parisi went down a minute 23 in the second.
35:19A flash knockdown.
35:20And at the end of the last round,
35:25Chavez inviting, urging, Parisi in, taunting him.
35:37Almost a la Jake Lovato.
35:45And Chavez just punishing Parisi downstairs and up.
35:49Just missed with that right hand, did Chavez.
35:55The crowd has quieted down.
35:56You can hear almost hear a pin drop around here.
35:58I mean, it's like a one-way beating you see in the gym,
36:00and the other guy has no chance to come on.
36:03You're waiting for maybe one shot,
36:04something that ripped the...
36:06You get the feeling, as Bobby said,
36:07he just...
36:08He doesn't...
36:09He's being outstrength.
36:10He's absorbing everything he throws,
36:12and there's no alternative.
36:14Not very much to cheer about here
36:16as we are standing by for the main event.
36:18The WBC Heavyweight Championship.
36:22Oliver McCaul and Larry Holmes.
36:24Well, at least that will be exciting.
36:26I mean, I can promise the fans that.
36:28A little flurry there by Parisi.
36:30Well, heavyweights always add more excitement
36:31just because of the big one-punch knockout,
36:33crunching power.
36:34And I'll tell you what, at this level, though,
36:36these fighters are fighting excellent fights.
36:38Chavez is a supreme talent,
36:39and Parisi's doing everything he can,
36:41he just doesn't have what it takes here.
36:43He's not getting beat up bad enough
36:45to get knocked out.
36:46He's just getting beaten up.
36:47And maybe that's the intention of Chavez.
36:50I mean, this guy's such a pro,
36:53he looks like he can control when
36:55he's gonna knock out people.
36:57Oh, nice right hand flush on the jaw of Chavez,
37:02but nothing happened.
37:03That might have been the best punch of the night.
37:05He turned in on that,
37:06and he hit him with it again.
37:07And if anything, Bobby,
37:08it just makes Chavez mad.
37:10Well, I'll tell you,
37:11he hit him with three of them there,
37:12and that's the best success he's had
37:13with three consecutive shots.
37:15Fifteen seconds to go in round nine.
37:17Chavez, who has a granite chin.
37:20Low blow by Parisi.
37:23Well, there have been many.
37:25No, low blow received by Parisi.
37:27Yes.
37:28Been many.
37:29Good forward.
37:38Come on.
37:40Let's go.
37:41Good forward.
37:42Come on.
37:43No, no.
37:44No, no.
37:49Hit him.
37:50Try to hit him right in the face.
37:52in the face.
38:08Nothing actually being said.
38:17Just talking about what we're nice and that's it.
38:20Not really much being said at all.
38:22They're not even edging him on at all.
38:29So very quiet from trainer Giovanni Boccellini as they work on the cut, the abrasion under
38:35the left eye of Parisi and it's been quiet in both corners, but of course it is a lopsided
38:42affair in favor of Chavez.
38:45Chavez makes it easy because all you got to do is add tens in a box.
38:48I mean, you don't get all complicated with nines and stuff.
38:50I'll tell you what, in both corners, obviously there's not a lot of talk, but for totally
38:57opposite reasons, I think there might be resigned in Parisi's corner that, okay, he's going to
39:00do his best to survive.
39:01There's not too much he can do.
39:02Everything he tried in the early rounds didn't work, isn't working, and he's not going to
39:05work.
39:06And Chavez's corner, just go out and do what you were doing because everything's working.
39:09Yeah.
39:10So what you're saying is the attitude of the corner reflects the fight.
39:13Pretty much, I think so.
39:15The judges just for the record, Terry Smith and Lou Filippo of California, Carol Castellano
39:21of Nevada.
39:22Joe Cortez, third man of the ring.
39:24Look at this.
39:25Look at this.
39:26Look at this.
39:27Pounding on the body, Chavez.
39:28That kind of body punching, even when he was in a position which looked like he was
39:30going to be smothered, he still ripped off four or five punches.
39:36Starting to zero in a little more on the body with a little more enthusiasm, Chavez.
39:39And I think right now he's trying to not allow Parisi to stay the 12 rounds, which seems
39:43to be what Parisi was determined to do.
39:46There's that jab by Chavez.
39:48Well, Chavez always says these are his rounds, 10, 11, and 12.
39:52I mean, he likes it.
39:53Yep.
39:54We set it at the top.
39:55He gets stronger as the fight wears on.
39:58And it would bode well for Parisi to get started quickly, but he was unable.
40:02The questions are coming in.
40:03Can Parisi overcome the legendary Chavez or even stand up to him?
40:08Right now, the answer, a resounding no.
40:11Yeah.
40:12And it's been a resounding no from early on.
40:15Well, I'll tell you, a minute ago, Parisi landed another one of those good right hands,
40:18but it doesn't even faze Chavez.
40:19And if you can't get his attention the way Frankie Randle did, you're not going to have
40:23a chance to do anything.
40:26Look at his head movement by Chavez.
40:32Beautiful popping and weaving.
40:34I wonder if Chavez is getting tired of hearing all that vocalizing that he's doing.
40:39Bobby, you ever fought a guy that sings as much as this guy does?
40:44Parisi does?
40:45I haven't paid too much attention to Ferdi.
40:47You know, some guys make some different sounds when they work.
40:49Sometimes I make some grunts and sometimes I make some squeaks.
40:52You know what?
40:53You never can tell.
40:54And that's just a broadcast.
40:55Exactly.
40:56Round 10 continues.
40:59Chavez, who might be pitching a shutout.
41:12Under 20 seconds.
41:17I see Missing Wisely with the combination and Chavez again invites him in.
41:21And look at this head movement by Chavez.
41:23Chavez just playing.
41:24Just playing.
41:25Cat and mouse.
41:26Toying with the challenger.
41:28Something he's not normally prone to doing is showing up.
41:32We never see Chavez showboat like this.
41:34No, that's a Pernell Whitaker.
41:35Maybe he's rehearsing to fight Pernell.
41:38Fight Pernell.
41:39Let's listen.
41:40Let's watch a champion having fun.
41:56He's been on the offensive.
41:57He says, now let me show you what a great defensive fighter.
42:00Come on.
42:01Let me show you.
42:02Throw all you got and you can't hit me.
42:03Yeah.
42:04You can't hit me.
42:05No, no.
42:06No, no.
42:07Look at that.
42:08Miss, miss, miss.
42:09And he didn't even throw anything back.
42:10Although he could have.
42:11It was just like a little bit of fun.
42:13I mean, God bless guys with talent.
42:22Well, you're a guy, Ferdi, who saw much of that.
42:26It's called the rope-a-toe.
42:28Yeah.
42:29He started something.
42:30But many great fighters have used it well before.
42:32Willie Pep and all these guys that knew how to use the ropes.
42:35They were defensive geniuses.
42:38It was wonderful to see this guy strike.
42:40Well, one thing we can say for the challenger, Parisi, he takes Chavez into the 11th round.
42:46He was knocked down earlier on in the second.
42:50But Chavez in total command.
42:52I don't know if he takes him there or if he's allowed to get there by Chavez.
42:57Chavez doesn't seem to be interested at all in knocking this guy out.
43:01He's just giving him a nice beating.
43:03But a few rounds ago, he seemed to start working the body as if he wanted to stop this fighter.
43:07And right now, he's starting to pick that same pace up again.
43:09Come on.
43:10Come on.
43:11Come on.
43:12Come on.
43:13And he did.
43:17And Cortez.
43:18Not really.
43:19He just wanted him to continue fighting.
43:21Well, they're trying hard to do that.
43:22Let's see if Chavez now gets more determined to put Parisi back down on the canvas.
43:27You know, it's remarkable he's flying around on his skinny legs
43:30because he's taking a big body beating.
43:32Well, that should have killed his legs.
43:34Parise is trying the best he can to avoid being knocked out,
43:38and that's as good as you can say about this.
43:42Come on. There you go.
43:46Parise just cannot get close to Chavez,
43:48who's too quick for him defensively.
43:50And those punches to the head having no effect there's a wet hand by Parise,
43:58but it just bounced off on his head.
44:00Well, Parise's always trying, but it's just not enough.
44:02It's so too little and so too late.
44:06Yeah, but I bet Chavez corner hates this.
44:09You don't want to take a chance on cuts.
44:11You don't want to take a chance on a lot of things.
44:12You just hate that kind of play.
44:14And those punches may have decked a lesser skilled fighter.
44:20Now, hitting to the back of the head with Chavez, getting warned.
44:25They're actually holding...
44:26Oh, look at that.
44:27What a show about it.
44:28Yeah.
44:29I think he must be as bored as the audience, he figures.
44:31Well, let me give him a little fun.
44:33Well, what he's doing now is he's being malicious.
44:35He's being a little mean.
44:36He's told he thinks he's important.
44:37Yeah, he's saying, come on, he's...
44:40Yeah, he's going, oh, come on.
44:42It's almost like the No Mas, No Mas thing,
44:44where Duran figured Chigure was never going to fight him.
44:46He was going to run all over the place.
44:48He's going to...
44:50Well, it does have the crowd going.
44:52The hot dog affects Chavez, and it stirs on Carisi.
44:57The crowd getting behind Carisi, the underdog.
45:00And maybe if you'd have done that from the beginning,
45:02we'd have had a different kind of fight.
45:04There you go.
45:05That's a good one.
45:06Well, I'll tell you what, he's made it very enjoyable,
45:07at least at this stage, and he's got a lot of heart,
45:08and I like his grit, but I'll tell you what,
45:10it's just not going to be a no.
45:11Best in 20.
45:12Whoa.
45:13Real miss, Chavez, who did a very bad Ali shuffle.
45:19Ah, best, best fight, best round of this fight,
45:22most enjoyable.
45:23Well, it certainly energized Giovanni Carisi.
45:28They'll follow Carisi into his corner,
45:30and they've got to have something to say now.
45:33Maria Santini, our translator.
45:35This is the way you have to do it.
45:39This is the way you have to do it.
45:41This is the way you have to do it.
45:43This is the way you have to do it.
45:45No, for mercy, the bank to save some more money in the money,
45:48so I missed him.
45:49I missed him.
45:50Final run, Joe Cortez had to physically take Chavez's glove
45:53and lift it to touch Parisi.
45:55Chavez wanted nothing from Parisi.
45:58Parisi has gone 12 rounds, only twice in his career.
46:01Both wins for the WBO lightweight title.
46:05Well, he gets into the 12th with Chavez, but Chavez...
46:08in total control.
46:11The best round for Parisi was the last round
46:13when he was encouraged by the crowd.
46:15Oh, I think I see knockout in the eyes of Cesar.
46:20He wants to finish this off.
46:21We'll get to Cesar Chavez.
46:23He's come out to punch.
46:24I was just going to say the same thing.
46:25For now, it's just a matter of do I stop him or not,
46:28and that's about all there is here,
46:30because I don't think Parisi has enough to knock Chavez out.
46:32That's not even a question there.
46:33So Cesar at Cesar's looking to put the punctuation mark
46:37on this fight against Parisi.
46:39Oh.
46:41All right, he can go back to Italy and brag
46:45that he went 12 with the great Julio Cesar Chavez
46:48and went for that for the rest of his life,
46:49because he did not disgrace himself.
46:51He just simply was outclassed by a superior fighter.
46:53I get the feeling Chavez will stay away
47:00from the hot dog tactics here,
47:01because the last time he did it, the crowd got behind Parisi.
47:03No, he's doing it again.
47:04He is doing it again.
47:05He should learn his lesson.
47:06And he doesn't even understand English.
47:08He didn't hear you.
47:09He's just doing it on his own.
47:10He's doing it again.
47:12Shouldn't do it.
47:13Not good.
47:15He's coming on.
47:15He's coming on.
47:17But like you say, that could be dangerous.
47:19Yeah.
47:20In terms of cuts, I'm sure his corner doesn't like that.
47:23Well, I'll tell you what.
47:24At least make it interesting and entertaining
47:25toward the end here.
47:26At least the show he's made a heart.
47:28He's a little bit of a showman, too.
47:30I don't think Chavez is just being Chavez.
47:33Come on.
47:34Let's fight.
47:34Let's fight.
47:34Come on.
47:35Come on.
47:35Come on.
47:36Come on.
47:38Chavez pretty much unmarked to quite the contrast
47:41for the challenge of Parisi.
47:44And unlike after his wars with Frankie the Surgeon Randall,
47:5150 seconds to go in the 12th round.
47:57In case we haven't had any clashing of heads.
48:00No, we haven't had any of those crazy things that
48:02have been happening in all of our programs.
48:04We just had a straight old fight.
48:05Now, we've had a couple of elbows and shoulders.
48:07Yes, a couple of low blows by Chavez,
48:09but no clashing of heads.
48:10Thank goodness.
48:11Considering the way we've had these nights,
48:13this is a peaceful affair.
48:14Yes.
48:15Oh, wow.
48:15Just a regular fight.
48:17Relatively speaking, as we approach 20 seconds
48:20remaining of the fight, and Julio Cesar Chavez on his way
48:26to defending his title once again.
48:29You may hear the Parisi corner going ballistic to our left.
48:33Final 10 seconds.
48:36But I'm afraid a little too late, folks.
48:40And that is it.
48:41So they go the distance, 12 rounds, and Julio Cesar Chavez
48:53on the threshold of his 94th victory
48:57as he punishes Giovanni Parisi.
49:00As the countdown of the final journey is officially on,
49:04looking to run his remarkable record at 94, 1 and 1,
49:08getting closer and closer to that century mark 100 fights,
49:11needing now just four more.
49:16Buffalo Martin in there.
49:18And they apply the ice pack, Bobby,
49:19to the face of Giovanni Parisi.
49:22And he got banged around pretty well here tonight.
49:27No marks, just a little bit.
49:29We always see that on the bridge of Chavez's nose every fight.
49:33And that seems to be his bruise area, designated bruise area.
49:36His badge of honor.
49:42All smiles.
49:42Julio Cesar Chavez in contrast to the face
49:48as they continue to apply the ice pack on Giovanni Parisi,
49:52who will not be a pretty sight in the morning.
49:54Although something I did notice about Parisi
49:56for having championship fights
49:57and having a record as good as he does,
49:59his nose is pretty straight, Steve.
50:01Yes.
50:01You chased him all night long.
50:02Let's get him.
50:04Yeah.
50:04Yeah.
50:05And he's still bobbing and weaving, Julio Cesar Chavez.
50:08Looks like he could go another 12th.
50:10The only knockdown of the fight we have here in round two,
50:12just a straight step in like a shotgun power jab.
50:15He just steps into him, foot gets caught under him,
50:18and you'll see it right here.
50:19Bang.
50:19And his right leg just collapses, and down he goes.
50:22Not a powerful shot, more a flash knockdown.
50:24I certainly thought he got hit with better shots later.
50:26Here you see it again from the overhead cam.
50:29He just steps in.
50:29It's this is about as simple as it gets.
50:31Boom.
50:33And down he goes.
50:40So Julio Cesar Chavez awaiting the decision.
50:44Let's go up to our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.
50:49Ladies and gentlemen, after 12 rounds of boxing,
50:53we have a unanimous decision.
50:55And here are the score totals.
50:57Judge at ringside, Terry Smith scores the bat 120 to 107.
51:03Lou Filippo and Carol Castellano both score the bat
51:07exactly the same at 118 to 109.
51:12All three in favor of the winner and still champion,
51:17Julio Cesar Chavez.
51:23His third title defense in his second reign as WBC super
51:27lightweight champ gets hoisted into the air,
51:29his 16th successful defense overall to this title.
51:32Now 31 and one in world championship
51:35bouts, 4-0 since his only defeat to Frankie Randall.
51:41So it's four down, one to go, and coming up next,
51:45our main event here at Caesars, the WBC heavyweight
51:50championship, Oliver McCall and Larry Holmes.
51:55And let's take you backstage.
51:57Into the dressing room with the champion, Oliver,
52:00the atomic bull McCall on the threshold of his first
52:02defense of the title.
52:04Looking to prove to the world he is not just a sparring
52:07partner, as many have labeled him.
52:09Young man who once had dreams of playing college or pro
52:12basketball finds himself in the almost surreal setting
52:16of fighting 45-year-old former world champion, Larry
52:19Holmes, looking very determined in the dressing room,
52:30Oliver McCall.
52:31That's all coming up, McCall and Holmes.
52:36Right now, the fight doctor, Ferdy Pacheco is standing
52:38by the ring, doctor.
52:40All right, Gladys, ask him if he was, he thought he had,
52:43was going to have an easy night because he knocked him down
52:45in the second round.
52:47No, he knew it was going to be a very difficult fight.
52:51He's a very good fighter, but he runs a great deal.
52:55Like that you can't fight.
52:58And all that joking and clowning around he did.
53:00He said he feels that the fight was the kind of a fight that was a good one, but he says
53:04that he wasn't in his caliber, he certainly didn't do what he had to do.
53:07All right, with the usual travel, we're going to throw to Jim Gray now.
53:12Thank you, Ferdy.
53:13I'm here with Frankie Randall.
53:13He is the only man who has ever beaten Julio Cesar Chavez.
53:16In fact, many believe he's beaten him twice, even though that was very controversial several
53:23times.
53:24He says that he wasn't in his caliber, he certainly didn't do what he had to do.
53:27All right.
53:28All right.
53:29With the usual travel, we're going to throw to Jim Gray now.
53:34Thank you, Ferdy.
53:35I'm here with Frankie Randall.
53:36Frankie Randall.
53:37He is the only man who has ever beaten Julio Cesar Chavez.
53:41In fact, many believe he's beaten him twice, even though that was very controversial several
53:46months ago.
53:47Frankie, what is your assessment tonight of Julio Cesar Chavez?
53:49I feel like Julio Cesar Chavez is one of the greatest shapes of his life.
53:53I think he's at his path.
53:54He's on the avenue to do good and finish out well.
53:57So Chavez has done a good job tonight.
53:59Parisi was not a fighter.
54:00He's a boxer and he ran all night and wasn't much to it.
54:03Parisi just really wouldn't fight him, would he?
54:05He don't have the heart, you know what I mean?
54:07You got to stand there and fight somebody like Chavez in order to get some respect.
54:10The man didn't get no respect at all.
54:13So, you know, so I'm the one that shows how the job is done.
54:16You know how it is?
54:17Frankie, you come into tonight feeling as though you were going to fight the winner.
54:21Is it your plan to now go and fight Julio Cesar Chavez again?
54:24Well, I understand that Don announced it in the press conference the other day that I will
54:27be fighting the winner of this fight.
54:28So I hope everything goes well.
54:30I know they've made these announcements before that I'll be fighting Chavez.
54:33But now I hope that things go well and then Chavez get to unify this title against the
54:37WBA and the WBC.
54:39Hopefully things work out.
54:40Would you be willing to go fight him back in Mexico or would it have to be here in the
54:43United States?
54:44Well, we started this mess in Las Vegas, so let's finish it right here.
54:47But if worse comes to worse and I have to, then I have no choice.
54:51I want to give the people what they want.
54:53I want to fight Chavez again myself.
54:55But I would rather fight him here in Las Vegas where all the action took place.
54:58Could you get a fair shake back in Mexico?
55:00I think so.
55:01I've got a lot of Mexican fans that like me, a lot of people that respect me.
55:04I fought in Monterey, Mexico, December 10th.
55:06So I think so.
55:07I don't have any grudge against any of the Mexicans.
55:09I don't think the Mexicans have any grudge against me either.
55:11What about the thought of Pernell Whitaker?
55:13Well, Pernell Whitaker, my door is open.
55:15I've been up to this fight up in Norfolk, Virginia.
55:19If money's right and price is right, I'll fight Pernell Whitaker.
55:21If you want to fight me, I'm ready, you know.
55:24Frankie, thank you.
55:25You look great tonight.
55:26Thanks a lot.
55:27All right.
55:28Let's go back to Steve.
55:29All right, Jim.
55:30I think Randall Richley deserves another shot.
55:33Julio Cesar Chavez after what happened in the last fight.
55:36But I don't agree with him as far as this fight is concerned.
55:40I think that Parisi showed heart.
55:42He just didn't have the skill or the power to contend with Julio Cesar Chavez.
55:48So here, about 15.
55:50.
55:51.
55:52.
55:53.
55:54.
55:55.
55:56.
55:57.
55:58.
55:59.
56:00.
56:01.
