01:37The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports.
01:39One night removed from Magic vs. Michael, the Great Western Forum turns the spotlight on the harder knocked end of the sporting spectrum as stars gather at ringside for the first edition of HBO's Boxing After Dark with all the trimmings.
01:55A chance for us to showcase rising stars who might not yet be ready for exposure on our Blue Ribbon Primetime series, but who will get that exposure here on Boxing After Dark.
02:06Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley.
02:10We welcome you to this first installment of a series that we hope is going to provide you over these next few years with a lot of entertainment, late night entertainment.
02:19That is all action and not very much talk.
02:22Here to talk a little bit with us, 168-pound world champion regarded by many as the best fighter in the world and the man who's going to be the full-time expert commentator for Boxing After Dark, Roy Jones Jr.
02:32And Roy, in the second fight of the evening, you're going to be seeing an old friend of yours because eight years ago in Seoul, South Korea, when you didn't get an Olympic gold medal in that controversy and injustice of the decision in your fight, Kennedy McKinney did get a gold medal.
02:47A lot of water under the bridge since then. He's now 30 years old.
02:50What chance that Kennedy can come up with a huge effort tonight against a younger, stronger, quicker fighter in Marco Antonio Barrera?
02:57Well, Kennedy has been through a lot in a professional career.
03:00He's managed to capture a world title, hold it for a successful amount of time, and now he's lost it, and he seems to be on somewhat of a decline.
03:09However, every man in boxing seeks to be on the top.
03:12He's getting a chance of a lifetime to once again climb to the top of that ladder.
03:17He will be ready tonight, and I think he will give it a very, very gallant effort.
03:21All right. Roy's going to be with us on every edition of Boxing After Dark when he's not in training for his own fights on HBO.
03:27Also with us, of course, HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Merchant.
03:31Larry, the Barrera-McKinney fight is the second bout of the evening.
03:34In the first, we're going to be seeing one of the most colorful figures in the sport in Johnny Tapia.
03:38I mentioned Hard Knocks. He's had as many as any active boxer today.
03:43At what point is a tough life outside the ring likely to catch up to Johnny in the ring?
03:48I just have to assume, Jim, that since he's been as destructive inside the ring as he's been self-destructive outside the ring,
03:56it's going to take a younger, better fighter to finally stop him, and the record shows it.
04:03He is unbeaten.
04:04In case you don't know about Johnny Tapia, his not-so-wonderful life comes down to this.
04:10Never knew his father. His mother was brutally raped and murdered when he was eight years old.
04:16He's been in and out of trouble ever since.
04:18He says, I was a lost child.
04:21He says, I'm never happy outside the ring.
04:25That's one of the most heartbreaking things I ever heard,
04:29at least until I heard his opponent, Andretti, tell us that
04:33sometimes poor people can't afford to love their children.
04:38He himself was abandoned as a child, grew up in the streets of San Paolo, Brazil,
04:44sometimes slept in the ring of a gymnasium,
04:47and finally was rescued by an antique dealer who shepherded him through high school,
04:52and he's got his life together.
04:54With these kinds of fighters and stories, Jim,
04:57there will always be boxing after dark in one form or another.
05:01Indeed, if you could buy the movie rights to the background stories of these two fighters,
05:05and some people at ringside might be thinking of exactly that,
05:08you might have yourself a hot property.
05:10Let's take a look at the tale of the tape for Johnny Tapia
05:13and the relatively unknown Brazilian Giovanni Andretti.
05:16You can see that Tapia is three years older.
05:18At one point, his career was interrupted for three and a half years
05:21because of his problem with cocaine.
05:24Andretti with a one-inch height advantage and a four-inch reach advantage.
05:28We don't know a whole heck of a lot about him,
05:30but he is reputed to have a strong right hand.
05:34Quickly now to the rules of the bout
05:35with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
05:38Harold?
05:39The Johnny Tapia-Giovanni-Andretti fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.
05:43There is no standing eight count.
05:44The three-knockdown rule is in effect.
05:47The referee or the doctor can stop the fight,
05:49and you can be saved by the belt only in the last round.
05:52Jim?
05:52All right, Harold.
05:54We are at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles,
05:57an ideal place to begin this Boxing After Dark series.
06:01And here comes Giovanni Andretti for his first fight in the United States.
06:06Twenty previous professional fights that we can document,
06:0915 of them in his native Brazil and five in Argentina.
06:12Andretti's hometown of San Paolo, Brazil has a population, we're told, of 20 million.
06:33Kind of nice for him to come to the sleepy little berg of L.A.
06:37for his first exposure in the U.S.A.
06:40Andretti's record, and again, this is what we can document.
06:43He started out yesterday in the meeting
06:45claiming to have had at least five more fights than this, all wins.
06:48But all of the information sources we can find list him at 18 wins,
06:53two losses, 13 KOs.
06:55And now here comes the popular Johnny Tapia.
07:05Andretti's record, and again, this is what we can do.
07:35Johnny Tapia has lost a couple of battles outside the ring,
07:40but he's never lost one in the ring.
07:43Thirty-three wins, no losses, two draws, 19 KOs.
07:46He is a relentless, passionate fighting machine.
07:54And before we go to the ring announcer,
07:56and you see Ray Leonard, who now owns a piece of Johnny Tapia,
07:59giving him a hug there.
08:00Before we go into the ring announcer, Michael Buffer,
08:02Larry Merchant, your words on an important subject in boxing this week.
08:07Jim, Dan Duval, who ran the family fight business known as Main Events,
08:11died earlier this week.
08:13And the best tribute we can pay to him is to point out
08:16that they thrived by developing young fighters
08:19like Pernell Whitaker, Evander Holyfield, Melchick Taylor,
08:22that their fighters never complained about being ripped off,
08:26that they never broke contracts.
08:28He was an orchid in the swamp that boxing often is,
08:32and we send our condolences to his family.
08:36And now for more on Dan Duval and on this upcoming boxing match,
08:40let's go to ring announcer Michael Buffer.
08:44Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please.
08:45Before we get started, there is a very sad duty, indeed,
08:49that must be performed at this time.
08:50Just a few days ago,
08:53a very prominent figure in the world of boxing passed away.
08:57He was, without a doubt,
08:59one of the most well-known boxing promoters in the world,
09:02Mr. Dan Duval.
09:04He was a man who was respected by all those who worked for him and with him,
09:09and indeed, those who were his competitors
09:12admired him for his honesty and integrity.
09:15Ladies and gentlemen,
09:18at this time, we would like to toll a memorial count of ten.
09:22For Dan Duval, as is the tradition in the world of boxing,
09:25please remain silent while we toll ten bells.
09:28We'll miss you, Dan.
09:55Rest in peace.
09:56And now, ladies and gentlemen,
10:01welcome to the Great Western Forum,
10:03serving the greater Los Angeles area here in Englewood, California,
10:08where tonight,
10:09forum boxing in association with
10:11your undisputed, undefeated king of beers,
10:15Budweiser presents World Championship Boxing.
10:19This bout is sanctioned by the California State Athletic Commission Chairman
10:22William Eisman, Vice Chairman,
10:24Hall of Famer from the NFL,
10:26Mr. Willie Buchanan,
10:28commissioners in attendance,
10:30Kim Wilshans and Andrew Kim,
10:32Executive Officer Richard DeCure,
10:34the timekeepers are Aaron Coslow and John Lichty,
10:38your physicians at ringside are Dr. Robert Carnes and Dr. Paul Wallace.
10:42This bout is also sanctioned by the World Boxing Organization,
10:47President and Supervisor at ringside, Francisco Barcacel.
10:51The three judges scoring this bout on a ten-point must system will be
10:56Dave Nelson, Horacio Bacamon, and Tomas Vásquez.
11:01And when the bell rings,
11:03the man in charge of the action,
11:05referee Raul Caiz.
11:09And now, ladies and gentlemen,
11:11from the Great Western Forum,
11:1312 rounds of boxing for the WBO,
11:16Junior Fandomweight Championship of the World.
11:20Introducing first,
11:24fighting out of the blue corner,
11:26wearing white, trimmed with gold,
11:27and weighing 115 pounds.
11:30His professional record,
11:3118 victories with only two defeats,
11:3413 of his 18 victories by KO.
11:37Ladies and gentlemen,
11:38from Sao Paulo, Brazil,
11:41introducing the number one ranked challenger in the world,
11:44Giovanni Andrade.
11:55And his opponent across the ring,
11:57fighting out of the red corner,
11:59wearing black, trimmed with turquoise,
12:01and also weighing in,
12:03exactly at 115 pounds.
12:05His professional record,
12:0733 victories without a loss,
12:09with two draws,
12:1119 knockouts.
12:13Ladies and gentlemen,
12:13from Albuquerque, New Mexico,
12:16presenting the undefeated WBO Junior Fandomweight Champion of the World,
12:25the baby-faced assassin,
12:27Johnny...
12:31...Kirpia!
12:32Johnny Tapia has never seen this fighter fight,
12:56knows really nothing about him.
12:58How does he go about
12:59dealing, at least with his reputation,
13:02as a good right-hand puncher?
13:03Well, he first goes out,
13:05moves to his right to avoid the right hand,
13:07but right away,
13:07I'm sure Tapia will let this guy,
13:09Giovanni,
13:10know that he is in the ring
13:11with the champion.
13:15They touch gloves,
13:16and round one begins
13:18between Johnny Tapia and Giovanni Andrade.
13:20And the appellation on the back of Tapia's trunks,
13:24Mi Vida Loca,
13:25My Crazy Life,
13:27in English,
13:28could apply to either fighter.
13:35Tapia's a guy who can really have
13:37a lot of respect for the position that he is in now.
13:40He's been through the worst things
13:42that he possibly probably could have been through,
13:44and now he's back at the top,
13:45and he realizes how great it is
13:47to be at the top.
13:49Tapia blocks the right-hand lead
13:51with his glove.
13:55Even when he's not punching,
13:58Tapia is a constant blur of motion.
14:00Good head movement,
14:02the shoulders are rolling,
14:03the hands are popping
14:04as he gets ready to throw.
14:06Andrade,
14:06a little bit more conventional in there.
14:09My assumption is that
14:11Andrade's left shoulder
14:12is turned 2-4 to the front.
14:14Therefore,
14:15Tapia would time him
14:17coming around with the right hand
14:18and nail him with the right hand of his own.
14:20And Tapia lands a right hand there.
14:23First heavy blow of the fight for Johnny.
14:26Andrade reaching with the left hand,
14:28not yet able to land a right.
14:30And his jab appears tentative at best, Roy.
14:34Yes, very tentative
14:35because he doesn't like to stretch it all the way out.
14:37And his shoulder is so far forward,
14:38until he can't really throw
14:39and affect the jab.
14:45He's going to be in
14:45for a long night here, I think.
14:48His front feet has all his weight on it,
14:50and that's very wrong
14:51for a fighter to do.
14:52Andrade backing up
14:53and keeping a distance,
14:54so Tapia not able to throw a lot
14:56so far in the first round.
14:58Closer Andrade gets,
15:00the more Tapia will crank it up.
15:02Are you saying, Roy,
15:03that he's an unorthodox fighter
15:05because many people
15:06have accused you of that?
15:07Very unorthodox,
15:09but I don't keep my weight
15:10on my front foot.
15:11My weight stays either
15:12in the middle or behind.
15:15Enables you to generate more power.
15:17That's right.
15:18That's why I can knock him out
15:19from all angles.
15:20This guy only can knock you out
15:21with the right hand
15:21because his front foot
15:22is almost flat at times.
15:24Andrade stepping in closer
15:29and trying to get a little bit
15:30more on the jabs.
15:32Slips there.
15:33Johnny Tapia with a hard right hand
15:46in the middle
15:46of Andrade's chest.
15:50Andrade performs like a guy
15:51who doesn't have
15:52very much experience.
15:56No experience here in the USA.
15:58All of his fights,
15:58as we told you,
15:59in Brazil and Argentina.
16:01So far,
16:02Johnny Tapia has been content
16:03to wait for his opportunities
16:05and try to capitalize
16:06with power punches.
16:07That was the right hand
16:08that Tapia,
16:09that I was speaking of,
16:10that Tapia should try
16:11to catch him with.
16:11He almost timed him
16:13coming from that back shoulder
16:14with his own right hand.
16:14Andrade on the left hand.
16:17And as we go
16:18to the Spanish-speaking corner
16:19of Giovanna Andrade,
16:21our interpreter tonight
16:23is Ray Torres.
16:28Okay, you gotta keep
16:29throwing punches.
16:29You gotta keep this guy at bay.
16:31He is coming too close to you.
16:34He's getting too close to you.
16:35You need to jab more.
16:39He says he's slipping.
16:40He doesn't have a plate
16:44that you need to scratch.
16:53Very good.
16:55He won the first round already.
16:57First round is at home.
16:58Just be careful
16:59with the right hand.
17:00That's all.
17:01Stay with the right hand.
17:02Stay there.
17:07Okay.
17:10Round two
17:16and throughout the evening
17:18as one of our
17:19many innovations
17:20here on Boxing After Dark,
17:22we'll show you
17:23via graphic
17:24how Harold Letterman
17:25has scored
17:25each preceding round.
17:29Tapia impressed me
17:30very highly
17:31with his patience
17:32in that first round.
17:35And now
17:36Johnny Tapia
17:37begins to open up.
17:38Having seen
17:40how tentative
17:41Andrade is
17:41with the jab
17:42and Andrade
17:42threw 31 jabs
17:43in the first round
17:44landed only two
17:45by punch stat computations.
17:48Now he sticks one in
17:49with some resolution
17:50and maybe he's starting
17:51to feel a little bit
17:52more secure.
17:53Tapia backs up
17:53from the right hand.
17:58Andrade has
17:59leather-soled shoes
18:00and this is causing him
18:01to slip
18:02very much
18:02in this fight.
18:03The key mystery
18:09in Andrade's outfit
18:10is why he has
18:11a flag of Korea
18:12on the back
18:13of his trunks.
18:14The flag of Brazil
18:15we can understand
18:16but on the back left
18:17there's a flag of Korea
18:18and frankly
18:19I wasn't warned
18:20about that.
18:22Hard right hand
18:23by Tapia
18:24as Andrade moves away.
18:25and now Tapia
18:47lands a light blow
18:48down low
18:48and Andrade
18:49decides that
18:50it was nearly
18:52life-threatening.
18:54Fight!
18:55takes a few seconds off
18:59and then decides
18:59to come right back.
19:00Referee is Raul Caiz.
19:03If he doesn't win
19:03counter right hand
19:04inside by Tapia
19:05Andrade is losing.
19:09Tapia got an opportunity
19:10as Andrade was missing
19:11with one of those left
19:12and he knocks him down.
19:14That was a flip.
19:16I think that was
19:17a partial slip too, Roy.
19:19And you could see
19:20his shoes slide out
19:21from under him.
19:22Okay, one more.
19:23You ever wear
19:23leather-soled shoes, Roy?
19:24No, because I know
19:25that they slip
19:26very badly.
19:29Another low blow.
19:29Another low blow
19:30by Tapia
19:31and again
19:32Andrade
19:33is badly hurt
19:35by this one.
19:39Harold Letterman,
19:40what's the rule?
19:41Well, if the referee
19:42doesn't recognize
19:43a low blow
19:44this kick,
19:45Johnny Tapia
19:46wins by a TKO.
19:47I mean,
19:47the referee
19:48has to call
19:48the shot low.
19:50If the referee
19:50doesn't see
19:51that it's a low blow
19:52then Johnny Tapia
19:53wins the fight.
19:54You can see
19:54that all of Tapia's
19:55corner people
19:56are in the ring.
19:57I'm not sure
19:58if the referee
19:58has stopped
19:59the fight or not.
20:00I'm not sure
20:00if the referee
20:00has stopped the fight
20:01or not.
20:01I believe
20:06the referee
20:08is suggesting
20:09that it was
20:09a legal punch.
20:11He didn't see it
20:12as a low punch.
20:13I saw it
20:14as a low punch
20:15but it certainly
20:16didn't seem
20:16to have the force
20:17to do it
20:18to do what
20:19Andrade is claiming
20:21it did.
20:24He came here
20:24with his trunks
20:25up high.
20:26Maybe he was looking
20:27for this excuse
20:28the whole time.
20:30Well, there did seem
20:31to be a little bit
20:31of a delayed reaction.
20:33He takes the punch
20:33on the cup.
20:34There's a momentary pause
20:35and then he goes down
20:36in mortal agony.
20:37Happened twice.
20:38Anybody see
20:49any official signal
20:50that the referee
20:50stopped this bout?
20:51Roy, Larry,
20:52you say anything?
20:53No, I didn't see it.
20:53I thought the referee
20:54did signal the end
20:56of the bout
20:56when he came in.
20:59All right,
21:00here's the first
21:00low blow.
21:01Larry?
21:02That was definitely
21:03a very low blow.
21:04I mean,
21:05that was way down
21:05in Tierra del Suego
21:07but it didn't seem
21:09to be as hard.
21:10Now, let's see
21:11this last one.
21:13That was a low blow, too.
21:14It was a slightly
21:15low blow as well.
21:16Yes, on the hip bone.
21:17It appeared to be
21:18a glancing blow
21:19and it certainly
21:19didn't appear to be
21:20down there on the
21:20center of the cup
21:21where Andrade
21:22is indicating it landed.
21:32Harold, Harold,
21:33how did you see it?
21:34Well, Larry,
21:35listen to me a second.
21:36If a fighter
21:37is pulling
21:38the other fighter's
21:39head down
21:39and the guy
21:40throws a punch,
21:41how in God's name
21:42can't the shot
21:43go low?
21:44In other words,
21:44Andrade,
21:45on the first low blow,
21:47Andrade definitely
21:48had Johnny Tapia
21:50behind the head.
21:51At the same time,
21:53Tapia let go
21:53of the punch
21:54which he was aiming
21:54for the body
21:55so of course
21:56it was going
21:56to go low.
21:57You can't call
21:58that a low blow
21:59because Andrade
22:00was committing a foul
22:01by pulling his head down.
22:01All right,
22:10let's go up
22:10to Michael Buffer
22:11right now
22:12because apparently
22:12there are official
22:13particulars on this one.
22:15Ladies and gentlemen,
22:20referee Raul Caez
22:21calls the halt
22:22of the bout.
22:23The official time
22:24is two minutes
22:2526 seconds
22:27of round number two.
22:28The winner
22:29by knockout victory
22:30and still
22:31the undefeated
22:33WBO Junior
22:35Phantomweight Champion
22:36of the World
22:37and the baby
22:39faced assassin
22:41Johnny Tapia.
22:49So on Andrade's
22:50first trip
22:51to the United States
22:52he catches
22:52his third loss
22:54and I'm sure
22:54that he and his people
22:56are going to say
22:56it is an injustice.
22:59Johnny Tapia
22:59gets his 34th win.
23:0420th knockout
23:05for Tapia
23:05and let's take
23:06another look
23:06at the first low blow
23:08and see what
23:09Harold was talking about
23:10with regard to
23:10holding the head.
23:13Yep.
23:13Hand behind the left
23:14or left hand
23:15behind the head.
23:16Harold is definitely right.
23:18This pulls the top
23:19of the guy's body
23:19down lower
23:20so his punch
23:21comes at a lower shot
23:22than it's supposed to.
23:27That was the first low blow
23:28and this is still
23:31the first low blow
23:31and an overhead look
23:33at Andrade
23:34holding Johnny Tapia's head.
23:36And now Larry
23:39stands by in the ring
23:40with the man
23:41who's been judged
23:42the winner
23:42Johnny Tapia.
23:46Johnny
23:46were those low blows
23:48both of them?
23:50I don't know
23:50I was just shooting punches
23:51to go to his body
23:52but he would try
23:52to duck on me
23:53and I like to give
23:55a lot of thanks
23:55to the Lord
23:56and the first knockdown
23:58it looked like he was
23:59pulling your head down
24:03was that the reason
24:04that that went
24:04very very low
24:05do you think?
24:06Yes that was the whole
24:07situation because
24:07he would duck me
24:08once I hit him
24:09with a good shot
24:10and hurt him
24:10he started to grab my head
24:11and pull me down.
24:13Did you think
24:14whether or not
24:15the punches were low
24:16that they were hard enough
24:17to put him in the kind
24:19of agony
24:20he appeared to be in?
24:21He was faking
24:22he was scared
24:22he's been trying to hug me
24:23he's been holding my hand
24:25I don't say nothing bad
24:26I'm glad he's okay
24:28All right
24:29let's take a look
24:30at this last knockdown
24:32and you describe
24:32what you see
24:33Oh see I went at him
24:35and I hurt him
24:35with the jab
24:35see but he
24:36now I was going
24:37to go finish him
24:38I jabbed him again
24:39watch he'll try
24:41to grab my head now
24:42you'll see it
24:43where he tries to get me
24:43This is Ryan Day
24:44Ryan Day
24:46That was right
24:46right there
24:47a good body shot
24:47Ryan Day
24:48All right
24:49you've said
24:50you've said Johnny
24:51that every time
24:52you fight a fight
24:54that it makes up
24:55for some kind of
24:56problem in your past
24:57how does this feel?
24:58It feels good
24:59I'd like to give
24:59a lot of thanks
25:00to Bob Ben
25:00the greatest promoter
25:01that helped me
25:02stuck with me
25:03through thick and thin
25:03and also HBO
25:04for guiding me
25:06and giving me
25:06an opportunity
25:07What do you see
25:08next for yourself?
25:09I'll let that
25:10to Mr. Aaron
25:11whatever he tells me
25:11to do I'll do it
25:12Quickly Bob
25:13what do you see
25:13next?
25:14Well sure
25:15the fight
25:15that everybody
25:15wants to see
25:16is Johnny
25:17against Danny Romero
25:18Johnny got a hell
25:20of a manager
25:20in Sugar Ray Lennon
25:21and maybe he can
25:22persuade the Romero
25:23people to take the fight
25:25All right
25:25let's talk to Sugar Ray
25:26Leonard in his role
25:27as a manager
25:28I don't think
25:28I've interviewed
25:29in the ring
25:30in this role yet
25:31nice to see you again
25:32Ray
25:33give us your feelings
25:35about Johnny Tapia
25:36and what he can still
25:38accomplish in boxing
25:40I think it's impressive
25:41what he's done thus far
25:42he's made an incredible
25:43comeback from a personal
25:44standpoint
25:45and now he's in the ring
25:46he's very serious
25:47Larry
25:47and I think like
25:48to reiterate on what
25:49Bob said
25:50the fight
25:51that people want to see
25:52is Danny Romero
25:53and Johnny Tapia
25:55how have you tried
25:57to talk to him
25:58to deal with him
25:59and to try to keep him
26:00focused on his
26:01prize fighting
26:02because of
26:02the unrest
26:04that he's had
26:04from his background
26:05well
26:06being more than just
26:07a co-manager
26:08to be a friend
26:08to be a listening box
26:10for him
26:10because a lot of things
26:11that Johnny wants to
26:12express to people
26:13I've been able to
26:15comprehend with that
26:16and it's a good
26:17relationship
26:17it's good chemistry
26:18and it's like
26:19giving back to you
26:20thanks a lot
26:22Ray
26:22let's now talk
26:23to Giovanno Andretti
26:25and here he is
26:27with our interpreter
26:28Giovanno
26:29tell us what
26:31happened in your view
26:33in this fight
26:33I played very well
26:36in the fight
26:37I came real well
26:55into the fight
26:56I was doing real well
26:56but Johnny hit me
26:57a low blow
26:58you can't hit
26:58a low blow
26:59I'd like a rematch
27:00we'll make this
27:01over again
27:01he says that
27:03you were pulling
27:06his head down
27:07and that's why
27:08he hit you low
27:09what is your response
27:10to that
27:10yes and take a look
27:14and watch
27:14he hit me a low blow
27:16I want a rematch
27:30that was the first
27:31low blow
27:31that was in the first
27:35low
27:35I want a rematch
27:37that's what I'm
27:38looking for
27:38all right
27:40now here once again
27:41is the second
27:41the second low blow
27:43this one is about
27:44around Tierra del Fuego
27:46he thinks
27:47how does he view it
27:48you want to join me
27:51I want to look at him
27:53look at him
27:58it looked like
28:00on the borderline
28:01it looked like
28:02on the borderline
28:03you admit
28:04is it possible
28:05you have
28:06some kind of
28:06a problem
28:07with your cup
28:08the cup is perfectly well
28:19the second low blow
28:20was really flagrant
28:22thank you very much
28:23Jim
28:24all right
28:26thanks very much
28:27Larry Merchant
28:28Roy Jones
28:29let's give
28:30Andrade
28:30the ultimate benefit
28:32of the doubt
28:32go as far as we can
28:33any way
28:34that either of those
28:35two blows
28:36could have damaged him
28:36as much
28:37as he appeared
28:38to be damaged
28:38no way
28:39neither of these blows
28:40even hit the mark
28:41you know what I'm saying
28:41I mean
28:42he came in
28:42with his trunks high
28:43the referee should have
28:44told him early
28:45he should have warned him
28:46and said that
28:46I'm not counting
28:47these shots low
28:48because his trunks
28:49were so high
28:50anytime you come in
28:51with your trunks that high
28:52you're looking for
28:52a reason to quit anyway
28:53so I mean
28:54if anything
28:55Andrade
28:55he can stay out here
28:57and try
28:57for a role
28:58somewhere in Hollywood
28:59for a movie
28:59because it's basically
29:00a big action show
29:01well what about
29:02Raul Caiz
29:03stopping the fight
29:04and incidentally
29:05we're not allowed
29:06by the California
29:07State Athletic Commission
29:08to interview
29:09the referee
29:09so we can't hear
29:10what Caiz has to say
29:11about it
29:12it seems to me
29:13that it's possible
29:14they should be still
29:14fighting
29:15if Andrade
29:16had thought
29:16that at some point
29:17he could have continued
29:18I don't know
29:19I think the referee
29:20thought that Andrade
29:21really didn't want to fight
29:22and Andrade got down
29:24on the floor
29:24and started kicking
29:25like he's throwing fits
29:26and all
29:26he's not going to get up
29:27you know what I'm saying
29:27and the referee
29:28probably felt the same way
29:29so why even waste his time
29:31everybody wants to see
29:32Johnny Tapia
29:33against Danny Romero
29:34what kind of a fight
29:35would that be
29:35that would be
29:36what you call
29:37a barn burner
29:38that would be sensational
29:40an excellent fight
29:41incidentally
29:43speaking of barn burners
29:44we're looking down
29:45the road on HBO
29:46toward a possible meeting
29:47on June 7
29:48of this year
29:48between Oscar De La Hoya
29:50and Julio Cesar Chavez
29:52and in anticipation of that
29:53on a regular
29:54primetime HBO telecast
29:55next Friday
29:56February 9
29:57we'll be at Caesars Palace
29:58in Las Vegas
29:59where Chavez will be
30:00taking on a fighter
30:00named Scott Walker
30:01and De La Hoya
30:02will be taking on
30:03Darryl Tyson
30:04you say too tough
30:05an opponent
30:06for this kind of a fight
30:07well I don't say
30:08too tough of an opponent
30:09but it's just like
30:10the Tommy Morrison
30:11Michael Bent situation
30:12he was Tommy Morrison
30:13about to make a mega payday
30:15with a fighter
30:16like Lennox Lewis
30:16he took a chance
30:17with a fighter
30:18like Michael Bent
30:19and got knocked out
30:20of that mega payday
30:21these type of
30:22career moves
30:23are bad mistakes
30:24for a fighter to make
30:24because you may not
30:25ever get that chance
30:26to make that mega payday
30:28again
30:28on the other hand
30:29what great confidence
30:30Oscar will have
30:31in his first battle
30:32at 140 pounds
30:33if in fact he does
30:34a good job in there
30:35against Tyson
30:36that's part of what
30:37we're waiting to see
30:37next Friday night
30:38but right now
30:39Larry Merchant
30:40is standing by
30:40with the other big
30:41half of that attraction
30:42Julio Cesar Chavez
30:44Larry
30:44nice to see you again
30:48what do you know
30:51about Scott Walker
30:52he's a tall
30:57slim kid
30:58he moves a lot
31:00I think it's not
31:04going to be a real
31:05hard fight
31:05but it's going to be
31:05a difficult fight
31:06but we're working on that
31:08to cope with his style
31:11to cope with his style
31:12all right
31:13there's plenty of time
31:14to talk about Oscar
31:16De La Hoya
31:16in the future
31:17but just give us
31:18your impression
31:19of Oscar De La Hoya
31:20as a fighter
31:21and as a potential opponent
31:23he's a young
31:43strong fighter
31:44very good fighter
31:45we're preparing
31:46ourselves very well
31:47and we're going to
31:47close a lot of mouths
31:48leave no doubt
31:50we're going to win
31:50thank you very much
31:52Julio
31:52all right Jim
31:54all right
31:55thanks a lot Larry
