00:00I
01:00Welcome to beautiful Southern California on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon.
01:15We begin a big night of boxing from a terrific boxing venue, the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
01:22We begin our coverage here on Showtime Extreme with some very good prelim fights before moving over to Showtime for a very big triple header.
01:30And hi, everybody. I'm Brian Kenney. Good afternoon. It's a beautiful day here in Carson, California.
01:36Three great matchups coming up later on Showtime.
01:39The main event, we expect a very high-level collision between Marcos Maidana and Josecito Lopez.
01:44This place right now, close to old sold out, probably will be a sellout by the time we go on the air over on Showtime.
01:50Let's take a look at the lineup that we have for you here on Showtime Extreme.
01:54Kicking things off here with heavyweights, unbeaten prospect Gerald Washington taking on Sherman Williams in the opening bout.
01:59Williams always the opponent, but always ready to upset someone with a better record.
02:04Then, up after that, a junior featherweight bout between 2012 U.S. Olympian Jojo Diaz and Rigoberto Casillas.
02:11Undefeated Japanese star Yoshihiro Kamigai fighting Johan Perez.
02:15And then live on Showtime, three big fights, as we mentioned.
02:19We start off with super welterweights.
02:20The veteran, Demetrius Hopkins, the nephew of Bernard Hopkins, taking on the unbeaten young star, Jermel Charlo.
02:26A great matchup then at 154 pounds, Slugger versus Boxer.
02:31The classic matchup, Alfredo Angulo squaring off with a slick southpaw, Erislandi Lara.
02:36And then the main event, heavy-handed Marcos Maidana fighting the always entertaining Josecito Lopez
02:41as he jumps right back into the mix after his high-level loss to Canelo Alvarez.
02:46Before we get to the action, we invite you to check out our Facebook and Twitter pages.
02:50Some topics for discussion include, who will the Maidana Lopez winner face next?
02:55Who would you like to see Cotto or Trout fight, one of tonight's winners, at 154 pounds?
03:00Or whose career will benefit the most from a win tonight?
03:03You can go to Facebook and Twitter right now and send us your responses.
03:06Right now, let's go to the men who will call the action here on Showtime Extreme,
03:10fresh from the Finger Lakes of Upstate, New York, just hours ago,
03:14where Jimmy Lennon Jr. is being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
03:19The traveling men, fresh off the plane, Barry Tompkins and Steve Farhood.
03:23Good afternoon, guys.
03:24Good afternoon, BK, and boy, are our arms tired, I'll tell you that.
03:27You know, we've been talking a lot about the 147-pound division.
03:30You're going to be talking about it on the championship show later tonight.
03:33We're going to be seeing some of the best in that division,
03:35not only tonight, but over the next several weeks on Showtime.
03:38And we get an opportunity, Steve, at our main event,
03:41to see a guy who would very much like to be a part of that mix.
03:44He comes to us from Japan, fighting for only the third time in the United States,
03:47talking about Yoshihiro Kamigai.
03:50You and I have both seen this guy,
03:52and you and I both believe that he could eventually be a part of this mix.
03:55Welcome to the 147-pound sweepstakes, Yoshihiro Kamigai.
03:59Barry, he's a very exciting fighter.
04:01He has a simple approach.
04:02He stands in the middle of the ring.
04:04He throws a lot of punches.
04:05He gets hit with a lot of punches.
04:06It all is very exciting.
04:08And we're going to see a lot of him here for a very simple reason.
04:11There aren't a lot of welterweights in Japan.
04:13So let's see what he does.
04:14It's a big chance for him to make an impression in this division.
04:17And that's our main event tonight.
04:18He fights a tough guy at Johan Perez.
04:20Only one loss for him.
04:22Our first fight of the year, you know, takes place in the heavyweight division.
04:24It's a guy by the name of Gerald Washington,
04:26who will fight a veteran, Sherman Williams.
04:29Washington, only seven fights, but he's on a fast track.
04:32He was a college football player.
04:34He went serve time in the military.
04:35So he's getting a late start, but he's trying to jumpstart it tonight.
04:39All right, Barry, how many months, how many years have we been moaning,
04:42begging for a young American heavyweight to get excited about?
04:46Is Washington the guy?
04:47We'll see.
04:48But I'll tell you what.
04:48He's making a major step up against Sherman Williams,
04:51a fighter who's had 50-plus fights, who hasn't been stopped since 1999.
04:56So this is a real test for Washington.
04:57And he has been in there with some of the best in the heavyweight division.
05:00Let's take a look at the numbers, Steve, the tail of the tape,
05:02and see how these two match up.
05:04Well, we have big advantages for Gerald Washington.
05:07You see that he's nine years younger.
05:09He has a seven-inch reach advantage, seven-and-a-half-inch height advantage.
05:13And Williams at 266, he's usually a little bit better in the 240s.
05:18All right, let's take a look at the rules as they will govern this fight.
05:21And here in California tonight, no standing eight count, no three-knockdown rule.
05:25Ref or the doctor can stop the fight.
05:27The fighter can't be saved by the bill in any round.
05:28And the fight is official after the start of round four.
05:31All right, what's left then is to get getting,
05:33and we're going to do that right now as we take it to the center of the ring
05:36for the first time tonight, the introduction to the fighters
05:38with our ring announcer tonight, Joe Martinez.
05:41Joe.
05:46And ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening.
05:47Welcome to the Home Depot Center here in Carson, California.
05:52And welcome to Showtime Extreme, brought to you by Golden Boy Promotions
05:56and Showtime, sponsored by Corona Extra, La Cerveza Mas Fina,
06:00and AT&T Piense Sin Limites, presenting our judges for this contest,
06:06all hailing from California, Gwynadere, Carla Kays, and Jonathan Davis.
06:12And when the bell rings, your referee in charge of the action, Thomas Taylor.
06:16And here we go, five fans, eight rounds of boxing scheduled
06:19in this heavyweight special attraction.
06:22Introducing to you first, fighting out of the red corner,
06:25wearing white trunks, he hails from Port St. Lucie, Florida,
06:28by way of Freeport, Bahamas.
06:31Official weight, 266 pounds.
06:34A ring veteran, he brings 35 victories, 12 defeats,
06:38two draws, and one no decision with 19 wins,
06:41coming by way of knockout.
06:43Please welcome to the ring,
06:44Sherman, the tank, Williams.
06:52And introducing next, his opponent across the ring,
06:54fighting out of the blue corner,
06:56wearing gray trunks, trimmed in red,
06:58he fights out of Burbank, California,
07:00by way of Vallejo, California.
07:03Weighing it officially, 240 pounds even,
07:07he enters the ring, perfect as a professional.
07:10Seven bouts, seven victories, no defeats,
07:14and five wins coming by way of knockout.
07:16Here is the undefeated gentleman,
07:20Gerald El Gallo Negro, Washington.
07:26Once again, referee Thomas Taylor
07:28with the final instructions.
07:31Everyone else out.
07:33Boxer Chief second, everyone else out.
07:37Go.
07:37Glove.
07:39Glove, gentlemen.
07:40Gentlemen, we've gone through the rules in the dressing room.
07:43I want to remind you, protect yourselves at all times.
07:45Listen to my commands.
07:46Touch them up, back to your corner.
07:48And with that, we're set to go with our first fight of the evening.
07:52Gerald Washington will be wearing the light gray trunks.
07:55They'll probably look white at home with the red trim.
07:58And Sherman Williams in the right with the yellow waistband.
08:03Malpice.
08:04Malpice.
08:05Big step up, I think it's fair to say, for Gerald Washington.
08:07Yes, a very big step up.
08:09He's going to have to put in some rounds, I would believe, tonight.
08:11And, Barry, in identifying the guys, why don't you just say the short guy and the tall guy?
08:14There's that.
08:16Sherman Williams nicknamed the tank.
08:18I can't understand why.
08:19No.
08:205'10", 260.
08:21Where would you have gotten that from?
08:23And what you look for from Sherman Williams is an overhand right.
08:28It's really virtually his only weapon.
08:30And believe me, Washington knows it.
08:35Washington has done very well, but against very limited opposition thus far.
08:39Really late to the sport of boxing in general.
08:43Spent four years in the Navy.
08:44Played football at USC.
08:47Just up the road here.
08:48This fight likely to test Washington's patience.
08:59Because, as I mentioned in the open, Barry, Sherman Williams hasn't been stopped since 1999.
09:05And he's fought Holyfield and all kinds of top heavyweights.
09:09He doesn't often win.
09:10Sometimes he pulls off the upset.
09:11But he almost always goes the distance.
09:13He has fallen into that role of kind of traveling opponent.
09:16But he never embarrasses himself.
09:18The one thing about Washington, and again, I temper this by saying he has not fought anywhere near the caliber that he's fighting tonight.
09:26But he's been a good finisher.
09:28When he gets his man hurt, he's usually gone.
09:32That's the challenge tonight.
09:33One thing you see Washington doing right away here.
09:35He's sort of extending his left hand.
09:38And that's a comfort thing to keep Williams at the right distance.
09:42Because he obviously wants Williams at a distance with the huge reach advantage Washington has.
09:46But by dropping his left hand like that, he's almost inviting that overhand right, which is Tank Williams' only weapon.
09:55And you can see he just kind of paused with it and then drops it down around the waistband.
10:05Not much that Sherman Williams has not seen in a boxing ring.
10:12This fight's scheduled for eight rounds.
10:24Guys, look out of it, guys.
10:25Look out of it.
10:26All right, stop.
10:26No punts.
10:27No punts.
10:27Straight back.
10:27That's interesting, Barry.
10:28When they're in tight like that, you'd think that that would be Tank Williams' advantage.
10:32It's not.
10:33He really isn't an infighter.
10:34As short as he is, he wants that overhand right.
10:36And he needs some room to extend his right hand and land it.
10:4030 seconds remaining here in round one.
10:43There was that overhand right, but he was short.
10:51Not a lot of action here in this first round.
10:55Some flailing from Washington.
10:57He really doesn't have proper balance when he throws some of those combinations.
11:00That's why he's a work in progress.
11:01Stopping the bell, gentlemen.
11:09And there is the end of the first round.
11:12And I think Washington probably did enough to win the round.
11:16Take a look at the keys here.
11:18Well, we'll begin with Gerald Washington's feature, the jab.
11:21He can frustrate Williams by capitalizing on that huge reach advantage.
11:25Stay busy.
11:25Washington's best bet is to beat Williams with volume punching.
11:28He needs to throw early and often.
11:30And use both hands.
11:31Washington can rely too much on his right hand.
11:34He needs to mix the left hook into the attack.
11:39And for Sherman Williams, careful early.
11:42Williams has so much more experience, and that will be an advantage only if he makes this a long fight.
11:47Overhand right.
11:48Offensively, Williams is very one-dimensional, as I mentioned.
11:51He should try that overhand right again and again.
11:53And stay off the ropes.
11:54Because if Williams backs up and covers up, he'll give away free shots.
11:58And he has to make Washington work for his punches.
12:01John David Jackson, a very familiar face around the sport of boxing for many years, both as a fighter and as a corner man.
12:07In the corner of Tank Williams tonight.
12:09Fox.
12:10Round two of the scheduled eight-round fight.
12:16You talked about Washington being busy.
12:18He was not real busy in that first round.
12:22And Williams' problem is he was even less busy, and he landed one punch, Barry.
12:26One.
12:27That will not win a lot of fights for you.
12:30Come on, guys.
12:31Work out of it.
12:32All right.
12:33Stop.
12:33Stop.
12:33No punch.
12:34Straight back.
12:35Come on, guys.
12:35Now, both fighters are sort of just flicking out their left hands, not intentionally, not trying to score with a jab.
12:52It's kind of a measuring stick.
12:53And you can see the other thing that Washington's going to have to do, and does not set down on his punches real well.
13:00I saw that exactly correct.
13:01We saw it in the first round, and he flails because his legs are not in the right position to get leverage.
13:08He's an athlete trying to become a boxer, Barry.
13:11And we've seen that a lot with fighters.
13:12We've seen it with Seth Mitchell, who's made big strides.
13:15And we'll see Seth Mitchell on Showtime Championship Boxing very soon.
13:18It was a good right hand, but a good right hand in turn by Washington, and it drops Williams.
13:25Williams scored with a right, and Washington came back with a right hand of his own.
13:29Hey, come here.
13:31You all right?
13:31You want to go?
13:32Yeah.
13:32All right, let's go.
13:33But, Barry, believe it or not, that's the first knockdown in 50 professional fights for Sherman Williams.
13:40A long time, to say the least, a long time.
13:43It was a good clean shot with a right hand, and it came behind Williams' best punch of the fight.
13:48Now, let's see how Washington responds here.
13:53He was fighting a very patient fight, and it's important that he stays patient and doesn't
13:58think that he could drop Tank Williams with every shot he throws, because I don't think
14:01that's going to be the case.
14:04But that's a stunner.
14:06Very much so.
14:07Two good body shots by Washington.
14:09Drives Williams into the ropes.
14:10Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
14:12Fuck.
14:12Fuck.
14:12Fuck.
14:13Fuck.
14:14Fuck.
14:14Fuck.
14:14Fuck.
14:15Fuck.
14:15Fuck.
14:15Fuck.
14:15Fuck.
14:15Fuck.
14:16Fuck.
14:16Fuck.
14:17Fuck.
14:17Fuck.
14:18Fuck.
14:19Fuck.
14:19Fuck.
14:19Fuck.
14:26We have still not, or rather Washington's still not very busy.
14:31Well, you'd like to see the jab a little bit, and he's got that big reach advantage.
14:35And he's really not using the jab at all.
14:37He's using his left as a rangefinder, and I said he was right-hand happy in the keys.
14:41He's got to develop his other weapons, and the jab is critical at heavyweight, because the
14:45difference in reach can be so big among fighters as it is in this fight.
14:47And there again, you see exactly what Steve is talking about.
14:52He just kind of paused with it, just shows it to Williams.
14:57And we talked about Williams not being very busy.
15:04Well, what did he get for his troubling round two?
15:07He threw a shot and got counted and got dropped.
15:09We'll take a look at it.
15:11Good round, needless to say, for Gerald Washington.
15:17We'll take a look at action from round two.
15:32This is a stunner.
15:33We didn't think this would happen.
15:34Watch Williams with that big overhand right.
15:36That's his weapon.
15:37What happened, Washington was just enough out of range,
15:40an inch or two out of range, so that the overhand right didn't land
15:43and Washington's counter right did land.
15:46Super slow motion.
15:48There's the overhand right, and that right hand landed flush.
15:53It was sort of almost an uppercut, almost a right hook, actually,
15:57thrown by Washington.
15:58Williams going down for the first time in 50 fights.
16:03And I thought Williams just kind of stayed there
16:05after he threw that right hand.
16:09Well, it's tough to have balance, Barry,
16:11when you throw that overhand right with such zest
16:13because it takes you off balance, that punch.
16:16Round three of this eight-rounder.
16:22Come on, guys.
16:24No punch.
16:24Straight back.
16:25Good job.
16:26This is a, uh, uh, there's a quandary now for, for Williams
16:33because when you take your best weapon and you try to use it
16:36and you get knocked to the floor by using it,
16:38stop, stop, stop.
16:38No punch.
16:39What do you do?
16:39Yeah.
16:40There's really no plan B for Sean Williams.
16:42Stop.
16:43Listen to me.
16:44Listen to me.
16:44When I say stop, I'll take care of it.
16:46Stop.
16:47Okay.
16:47Stay cool.
16:49All right?
16:49Stay cool.
16:50I got it.
16:51Go.
16:51Fox.
16:52Referee Tom Taylor telling Gerald Washington,
17:00stay cool.
17:01He didn't look too upset to me.
17:03No, he didn't.
17:03He's been cool the whole night.
17:04I say break, guys.
17:05Break.
17:05Let's take a look at the total power punchers in this fight so far.
17:12You can see, uh, not balanced at all.
17:1516 of 48 for Washington, 6 of 25 for Sherman Williams.
17:28You just see no jab coming from Washington at all.
17:32And something tells me that's the game plan
17:34because maybe he doesn't want to get counted with that punch,
17:38the overhand right.
17:40Right, stop.
17:40No punch, guys.
17:41Straight back.
17:41Straight back.
17:42Let's go.
17:42Fox.
17:43But you would think you could stick the jab
17:47and move a little bit
17:48and still stay out of harm's way.
17:50Yeah, well, if you throw the jab hard enough
17:52and from the right distance,
17:53then you're not going to get counted,
17:54especially when you have a 7 1⁄2-inch reach advantage.
17:59I mean, for Sherman Williams to land a jab,
18:01he's going to have to take a flying start.
18:03We've got it, guys.
18:03We've got it.
18:04Hands up for him.
18:06All right, stop.
18:07No punch.
18:07Straight back.
18:09Fox.
18:09Still to come, of course,
18:13on Showtime Championship Boxing.
18:15What a fight.
18:16Maidana and Lopez at 147 pounds.
18:20Two hungry fighters,
18:21two guys that can really bang.
18:24Terrific main event tonight.
18:26Action fight, two action fighters.
18:28Both guys like to mix it up,
18:29and I think they're meeting at the right weight,
18:30and that's a key.
18:35Williams let his right hand go there.
18:37All right, stop.
18:38No punch.
18:39Washington wants no part of Williams on the inside.
18:42Fox.
18:45It's got to be very frustrating for Sherman Williams.
18:52Get him up.
18:52Get him up.
18:54Work out there, guys.
18:55Come on, hands are free.
18:57Stop.
18:57Straight back.
18:58Watch this over.
18:59Fox.
19:03Stop at the bell, gentlemen.
19:04Time.
19:09Time.
19:10So the end of round three,
19:12and pretty much more of same.
19:14Well, we've been talking about our main event
19:15on Championship Boxing,
19:16Maidana and Lopez.
19:18The weigh-in took place yesterday,
19:21and here's what happened at the weigh-in.
19:24That is Marcos Maidana.
19:26Came in at 147 pounds,
19:29exactly the weatherweight limit.
19:31And the other half of that matchup,
19:33Josecito Lopez at 145.
19:35Remember, Lopez had been fighting at 140.
19:40Well, we know that when Josecito Lopez
19:43fought Canelo Alvarez weight-wise,
19:46it was a mismatch,
19:47and he just couldn't absorb Canelo's punches.
19:50It's a lot fairer fight tonight with Maidana,
19:52who until recently was 140 pounds himself.
19:54So that is our main event on Championship Boxing
19:59coming up on Showtime.
20:03Maidana, right here.
20:06Back up a little bit.
20:09And we come to round four of this heavyweight fight.
20:11Gerald Washington, taller of the two,
20:13Sherman Tank Williams.
20:16And it's been a fight that has been owned
20:17by Washington thus far.
20:19He knocked Williams down in the second round.
20:21Not a lot of action,
20:22not a lot to talk about, quite frankly.
20:23You know, it's interesting, Barry,
20:32seeing Gerald Washington in the ring,
20:34former football player.
20:36Maybe that's one of the reasons
20:37we haven't had too many
20:38good young American heavyweights.
20:40Maybe they're going to other sports,
20:41specifically football.
20:43Because, yeah,
20:44there's just been so few of them.
20:46That's exactly right.
20:50Although, quite frankly,
20:51Williams is not really built
20:52like a football player either.
20:54Well, he did box quite a bit.
20:56No, Sherman Williams you're talking about.
20:57Yeah.
20:57I'm sorry.
20:58Washington did box quite a bit
21:00as a youngster before he took up football.
21:02And then four years in the Navy,
21:03as you mentioned,
21:04and he opened as well.
21:05So it's a late start.
21:06Remember, he's 31 years old.
21:07But 31 doesn't sound as old
21:09as it used to,
21:09especially in the heavyweight division
21:11where fighters peak much later.
21:13Absolutely.
21:13He was a tennis player, actually,
21:15in his hometown of Vallejo.
21:17Played on the high school tennis team.
21:20And he's winning every game
21:21at Love in this fight.
21:23That's right.
21:25This is going,
21:26it may not be that impressive
21:28to be watching Washington.
21:29As a matter of fact,
21:30at times it's not impressive.
21:31But this is going exactly
21:33the way he wants it to go.
21:34He's not getting hit.
21:35He scored a knockdown.
21:35He's winning every round.
21:37And he's absorbing a few lessons
21:38along the way.
21:39The fans are getting a little anxious.
21:41Yeah, I think they are.
21:42And can't fault him.
21:43But by the same token,
21:44he can't fault Washington.
21:49Well, the fans are watching a lesson.
21:50That's what this fight is.
21:51It's a lesson.
21:52And a valuable lesson
21:53that Washington has to learn.
22:01And as Williams trying
22:03that overhand right again
22:04to the chest.
22:05Straight back.
22:07Bucks.
22:07He's not throwing it very much.
22:11But the fight is being fought
22:12completely at Washington's range.
22:20Good right hand again.
22:21He just kind of jumped in
22:22with that right hand.
22:23And caught Williams
22:24stepping forward.
22:25Bucks.
22:27You know, Barry,
22:28in 2011,
22:30Sherman Williams fought
22:30out of Vander Holofield
22:31in West Virginia.
22:33And what was amazing
22:34about that fight
22:34is Sherman Williams
22:35was 38 years old
22:36and he had a 10-year age advantage.
22:40You don't see that too often.
22:44And he was on his way
22:45to beating Holofield.
22:45That fight got stopped early
22:46because of a cut.
22:49But he was hitting Holofield
22:51and he's not hitting Washington
22:52because Washington
22:52is simply too far away.
22:55Watch the heads, guys.
22:56Stopping the bell, gentlemen.
23:06Just missed with that
23:07long right hand.
23:09Time!
23:10End of four.
23:12And here's really a guy
23:14that's become a local hero
23:15and a real crowd pleaser
23:16wherever he fights.
23:17Avner Vardis.
23:18You've seen him many times
23:19on Championship Boxing
23:20here on Showtime.
23:21WBC Featherweight Champion
23:23of the World
23:24and a very popular figure
23:25both in and out of the ring.
23:27And a fantastic Friday to watch.
23:29That little graphic there
23:29that said Featherweight Champion.
23:31Every time we show him,
23:32it's a different division.
23:33Yeah, that's right.
23:33Bantamweight Champion,
23:34Junior Featherweight Champion,
23:35Featherweight Champion.
23:36He's wearing our graphics guys out.
23:38I think he's even money
23:39against these two heavyweights
23:40if they make the match.
23:41You've got to go right to him
23:46and set it up, okay?
23:47You're doing good.
23:47You're boxing good.
23:48Don't listen to that, man.
23:49You don't want to see somebody
23:50you don't want to see a pro
23:51we're a smart boxer.
23:53Let's keep doing that.
23:53He's going to run into something.
23:55Deep breath.
23:57You're winning all these rounds.
23:59WBC is out.
24:01Well, he's right.
24:03Style points don't really matter,
24:04I guess.
24:05Only to the audience.
24:06Sherman.
24:07And that's supposed to us.
24:08Back up.
24:08Back up.
24:08Well, John Coleman, the trainer.
24:10Let's go.
24:10Box.
24:11Of Gerald Washington.
24:12Hey, this is not exactly a surprise
24:13how this fight's going.
24:14He knew that the fight would go this way
24:16and that this was a possibility
24:17that the crowd would get a little anxious.
24:20But it's all about looking for improvement
24:22in Gerald Washington.
24:22We were at his pro debut.
24:24It was in San Jose, I believe.
24:26That was the Guerrero-Ideen fight, right?
24:28In 2012.
24:29And he looks very, very raw.
24:32And he's obviously athletic.
24:33He's got size.
24:35But heavyweights,
24:36you take your time in developing.
24:38There's no rush.
24:39He's got to learn better footwork
24:42and better balance.
24:45Yeah, got to sit down
24:46on his punches a little bit more.
24:49This is not the guy you pointed out earlier,
24:51really, to throw the jab against.
24:52But I think that's got to be a part of his arsenal,
24:54being the size that he is.
24:55And something that the Klitschko's and Povetkin have had
25:01that Gerald Washington doesn't have
25:03is the big amateur background.
25:04He had only 15 amateur fights,
25:06and that's virtually nothing.
25:08Do you think the weather is playing into the pace of this fight at all?
25:27We are outdoors.
25:28You know, I was going to say that.
25:29Not only are we outdoors,
25:31it's very warm.
25:32The sun is not yet set,
25:34and they're under the light.
25:35So I've got to think it's probably
25:36at least 90 degrees in a ring.
25:39These are two very big men.
25:42And the ring is also full of shadows.
25:44There was a right hand by Williams,
25:45but no damage.
25:46You know, you can't tell by the way he's fighting,
25:52but Sherman Williams loves this.
25:53That's why he's still doing it at the edge of 40.
25:55Hey, guys, we've got to let go of the arm.
25:56Let go of the arm.
25:57Stop.
25:57No punch.
25:58No punch.
25:58Straight back.
25:59Straight back.
26:00Straight back.
26:01Let's go, guys.
26:02Box.
26:06He doesn't use a lot of himself either, Williams,
26:09so you can see where he likely will be able to go the distance
26:12without any problem.
26:16Now, the problem with that right hand
26:22that Washington just threw,
26:24very ponderous, very slow in coming.
26:27Heavy hands, but very slow in coming.
26:32Come on, Sherman.
26:35Now, we're more than halfway through this fight,
26:37and again, you don't see any jabs from Washington,
26:39and I think that's for a reason.
26:40He doesn't want to get countered with that overhand right.
26:43Take away Williams' only weapon.
26:46All right, stop, guys.
26:56No punch.
26:57No punch.
26:57Straight back.
26:58Straight back, guys.
26:58Let him go.
26:59Let him go.
27:00Stopping the bell.
27:01Box.
27:02Stopping the bell, gentlemen.
27:03Time.
27:09Time.
27:10Well, a reminder tonight on Showtime,
27:12great tripleheader coming up tonight.
27:14Marcos Bidana fighting Josecito Lopez in our main event,
27:17and a couple of other good fights, too.
27:18Well, Angulo Lara, that's going to be a fantastic style mashup.
27:23Demetrius Hopkins battling Jermel Charlo,
27:25also on that card.
27:27Our championship boxing coming back on the 22nd.
27:29Our own Paulie Malanji against Adrian Broner.
27:32Seth Mitchell is on that card as well against Jonathan Banks,
27:35and Sakio Bika will fight Marco Antonio Parabat.
27:38And we're back with you on the 13th.
27:39Future boxing hall of famer and what a legend Bernard Hopkins fighting again against Carl Murat.
27:45And then on Friday, July 19th, championship boxing,
27:48a special edition IBF junior middleweight champion Ishii Smith defending his belt against Carlos Molina.
27:55So it's Ishii Smith and Carlos Molina.
27:58That's on July 19th, Saturday the 27th.
28:01Jesus Sotokarras gets a chance against Andre Berto, Omar Figueroa,
28:05and Nihito Arauca and Keith Thurman and Diego Chavez on September 14th.
28:09Another mega event, the biggest fight in recent years.
28:12Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez on Showtime.
28:17And that, Barry, is a calendar chock full of good fights.
28:21And a lot of those fights, 140, 147, 154 pounds.
28:25Those are the divisions that are hot right now in boxing.
28:31And you saw Seth Mitchell.
28:32Seth Mitchell was a linebacker at Michigan State.
28:35Had an injury, turned to boxing.
28:38And he has been the most talked about American heavyweight.
28:41Of course, he got stopped by Jonathan Banks recently in this fight.
28:44It'll be a rematch.
28:47But trying to follow the same path, or similar path, is Gerald Washington,
28:51who had a cup of coffee with the Seattle Seahawks and Buffalo Bills, practice squad.
28:56Washington's starting to open up a little bit more here in this fifth round.
29:08Sixth round, I beg your pardon.
29:11Yeah, I'd like to see him take a few more chances, just to be a little more impressive.
29:15A work in progress, but fighting a guy who has been in there with some very good fighters,
29:29a step that almost any prospect has to take at some point or other.
29:33He's taking it after his seventh fight.
29:35He's doing enough to win the fight.
29:38Crowd getting a little bit antsy, though.
29:40Washington being a little too careful for my liking.
29:48There he lets go with the right hand.
29:50Got to get him up.
29:51That's right.
29:52All right?
29:53And we talk about him being careful.
29:55You see the total punch is only 160 thrown by Washington.
29:59That's a running total.
30:00Still more than Williams is thrown.
30:05But to give you an idea, you might see Williams and say,
30:08well, why, how is this a step up for Washington?
30:12Washington's last few opponents had five fights, one fight, six fights, and eight fights.
30:17So that's how.
30:18And that's how.
30:19Sherman Williams has had 50 fights.
30:21And against Evander Holofield.
30:24And his last fight, Williams was against Robert Hellenius, who's a top 15 heavyweight.
30:28And he had Hellenius hurt.
30:30With an overhand right, of course.
30:39Again, Washington, despite having knocked Williams down, really hasn't hurt Williams in this fight.
30:44Very, very ponderous with his punches, Washington.
30:54There's not a lot of hand speed.
30:55This is not the second coming of Muhammad Ali.
30:57Straight back.
30:59Box.
31:00Stop.
31:00And no jab at all.
31:04And part of that may be of choice, but I think somewhere along the line he's got to show him.
31:10Good job.
31:14All he's trying to do is lull you into his overhand right.
31:24Now, when you shoot your one-two.
31:26That's what I'm saying, though.
31:27Catch your breath.
31:28That's what I'm saying.
31:29When you shoot your one-two, sometimes your head leads into his overhand right.
31:33So before you shoot the right hand, throw the jab a few times.
31:36Jab in the face.
31:37Don't just lean on with the right all the time.
31:39Okay?
31:39More jabs this time.
31:40Boxing.
31:41Beautiful.
31:42Stand left.
31:43Two more rounds.
31:44All right?
31:44You've got two rounds.
31:45A lot of stuff.
31:46You're going to work.
31:46You've got to get closer to the dog with the guy out now.
31:48Check out and get the guy out of here.
31:50And then two rounds.
31:50Two deep rounds.
31:52Body here.
31:53You've got to go to war now.
31:54Okay?
31:54You've got to touch on the outside of this guy.
31:55You've got to dog with the guy out.
31:56You've got to get in the chest and breathe on it.
31:59Go to the body and go to the head.
32:00Those hands go.
32:01So you've got two rounds.
32:02Let me go.
32:02I'll keep it.
32:04Right here.
32:05Go.
32:08Right here.
32:10Box.
32:10So we come to round seven of this eight-round fight.
32:15And he heard in Washington's corner telling him to use the jab.
32:20That's an idea.
32:21I think it's a concept.
32:24Not one that he's doing right now.
32:29Show stats.
32:31Through six rounds average.
32:33Washington six connects.
32:34Williams three.
32:35Now, I've been critical of the heavyweight division basically my entire professional life.
32:40And I think those stats tell why.
32:43We talk about the 140, 147, 154-pound divisions being hot.
32:47They don't throw 20 punches around.
32:49No, exactly.
32:53But we know the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for a heavyweight is tremendous.
32:57And even though he's 31 years old, Gerald Washington has time to develop.
33:02We'll just have to see him again and again and see if he does develop.
33:04But right now, there's a lot of work to be done.
33:08Yeah, this is maybe a classroom, but I think it's still an elementary classroom.
33:18There was that right hand from Williams.
33:21Did not have a lot.
33:23See, Williams makes no effort to shorten the distance between them.
33:26So when he throws that overhand right, most of the time, Washington is in another county.
33:34I think Washington may be getting a little bit gassed.
33:37Well, this fight is outdoors, as Barry mentioned before.
33:43It's in the sun.
33:45He says he's more relaxed in fights than in the gym because he says his sparring partners with the headgear and the big gloves,
33:51they get brave on him and they try to brawl with him.
33:53And in his fights, that doesn't happen.
33:55Interesting way to look at it.
33:56Well, certainly Sherman Williams is not brawling with him.
34:01No.
34:02He's a left hook by Sherman Williams.
34:03Yeah, not bad.
34:07But one and done.
34:08It's something I bet you the fans here, many of whom are Mexican-Americans, don't know, Barry.
34:34Gerald Washington, his nickname is the Black Rooster.
34:36His mom is Mexican.
34:37Yes.
34:40You can see he's got the Mexican flag and the American flag on either leg of his trunks.
34:49And Tank Williams from the Bahamas.
34:51Stop.
34:51No punch.
34:52Right there, guys.
34:52I got you.
34:53Let him go.
34:53Straight back.
34:54Let's go.
34:54Fox.
35:00Stop at the bell, gentlemen.
35:03Best overhand right of the fight there by Williams.
35:05And stop.
35:07No punch.
35:07No punch.
35:08But again, not a lot of follow-up.
35:10Time.
35:14Well, we're in our first fight of the evening here on Show Extreme.
35:17We're here at the Home Depot Center.
35:18Sellout crowd, as Brian Kenney mentioned, expected to be on hand for the championship portion of this evening.
35:25And we talk about the weather here.
35:27The sun is very bright.
35:29The sun is starting to get low, so that's a factor.
35:31It is only 69 degrees, although I've got to tell you.
35:34I don't buy it.
35:35It feels like those numbers are inverted.
35:38It feels about 96 ringside here, and probably even more so in the center of the ring.
35:45Let's take a look at the Sherman-Williams highlight.
35:48I mean the Sherman-Williams highlight.
35:50That's it.
35:51The right overhand right.
35:52You see it landed flush.
35:53Washington took it.
35:54And that may be one of the most meaningful moments in a relatively uneventful fight
35:58because we talk about Williams having that one weapon,
36:02and it took him until round seven really to land it.
36:06Almost took him until round seven to throw it.
36:09So we come to the eighth and final round.
36:13Guys, keep it clean.
36:13Last round.
36:14Here we go.
36:15Bucks.
36:15And the last round starts just like the previous seven.
36:31Taylor straight with a measured pace.
36:33This fight has been fought at Washington.
36:35Through seven rounds, through 203 punches.
36:38That's less than 30 a round, even for heavyweights that's well.
36:42And he's the aggressor.
36:43All right, guys, stop.
36:44No punch.
36:45Straight back, straight back.
36:46No punch.
36:46Let him go.
36:47Let's go.
36:48Bucks.
36:52Let's see if Washington tries to leave us with a good last impression.
37:00Watch your head, guys.
37:00Short with that left hand.
37:02You all right?
37:02Let me see.
37:03Let me see.
37:04Come here.
37:04Let me see.
37:04You all right?
37:05All right, watch your head.
37:06There was a headbutt there.
37:07Williams getting out of the chin of Washington.
37:09Let's go.
37:09Bucks.
37:10Tom Taylor, the referee, one of the better young officials here in California.
37:13We've seen a lot.
37:14He gets a lot of work.
37:15Uh-huh.
37:15With good reason.
37:16Yeah.
37:16Four years refereeing.
37:28Easy fight to referee.
37:29Yeah, I mean, there was no sense of urgency with either one of these guys.
37:35And this is the last round.
37:44Another headbutt.
37:45Let's go, guys.
37:45Look out of it, guys.
37:46Look out of it.
37:47All right, stop.
37:47No punch.
37:49Stop.
37:49There we go.
37:50Straight down.
37:51I told him.
37:51Bucks.
38:00When we asked Sherman Williams during the week about the fact that Washington had 19 rounds
38:04of pro experience to Williams' 280 rounds, Williams said, I could do 19 rounds in my sleep.
38:10And he is.
38:11You stole my life.
38:12Sorry.
38:14We've been working together too long.
38:15You know what I'm going to say.
38:18That's it.
38:19I'm not setting you up anymore tonight.
38:20That was good.
38:21That was a high fastball.
38:25Well, they're finishing the way they started, Barry.
38:29Washington staying away.
38:31Then jumping in with a punch or two.
38:33We haven't talked about the scoring, and with good reason.
38:35I think Washington's won every round.
38:36And remember, he did score a knockdown in round two.
38:40Guys, watch the heads.
38:41Watch the heads.
38:42All right, stop.
38:42Stop.
38:43Stop.
38:43Listen.
38:44Watch that head coming in, all right?
38:46Coming in.
38:46All right?
38:46Let's go.
38:47Bucks.
38:50So 13 seconds left in our first fight of the evening.
39:01Stop by the bell, gentlemen.
39:05And Williams trying, but you know what?
39:07The size difference is just too much.
39:09And he just hasn't been able to land anything meaningful.
39:12And that's it.
39:13It is over.
39:14And I don't think there's any question as to the winner of this fight.
39:18The biggest question is what was learned here.
39:20Well, one thing that was learned from Washington, he knew before he was coming in, which is
39:27that not everybody gets knocked out.
39:29And all you have to do is look at Sherman, the tank, Williams' record to see that.
39:34Well, it was that.
39:34He did knock him down.
39:35It was a good, solid punch.
39:37He did not throw the jab at all, despite his corners urging him to do so.
39:42Got a little ugly toward the end of the fight.
39:44Yeah, Williams was more effective with his head than any of that.
39:48That's borderline intentional.
39:50I hate to say that, because obviously I don't know for sure, but that was, he launched himself there.
39:55And now we're going to take a look at the knockdown.
39:59First time, again, Sherman Williams ever down.
40:00He throws that overhand right.
40:02Gets countered by a right hand.
40:04And William Washington was just out of range, and that's why he was able to counter.
40:07And the numbers overwhelmingly in favor of Gerald Washington, but they're not really what you
40:16would call impressive numbers.
40:18No, not at all.
40:19Total connects, only 61 to 40.
40:22I think he was more dominant than that suggests.
40:25And the jabs, Williams landed seven jabs.
40:28I'd like to see those.
40:28I don't know.
40:30And Washington, who has no excuse not to jab and land with jabs, landed only nine in eight rounds.
40:35So it'll go into the books as a W for Gerald Washington.
40:39I think the question that fans have to answer, and he himself has to answer, is what did he
40:44learn about himself?
40:47And he will take it back to the drawing board.
40:52Okay.
40:54All right, let's take it to the center of the ring, and Joe Martinez.
40:57Joe?
40:59Ladies and gentlemen, after eight rounds of boxing, we go to the scorecards, and all three
41:03judges agree, 79-72 for your winner by unanimous decision.
41:08And still undefeated, the gentleman, Gerald El Gallo Negro, Washington.
41:18So, Gerald Washington, now 8-0, and it'll be interesting to see where he goes from here.
41:23Indeed so.
41:24This was a lesson.
41:25What did he learn?
41:26Well, he went eight rounds for the first time.
41:28He had never been passed five before.
41:30And he fought a veteran opponent of 50 fights when he hadn't fought anybody with more than
41:34eight fights before.
41:35So, the type of fight a young heavyweight has to take.
41:37All right, just the beginning of a long night of boxing, both on Joe Extreme and Championship
41:41Boxing.
41:41Right now, we'll take it back up topside to Brian Kenney.
41:44Brian?
41:44Barry, Steve, thank you very much.
41:46You guys pretty snarky in the afternoon already, fellas.
41:48Good lines there.
41:49Just getting underway here at the Home Depot Center.
41:51Tremendous crowd.
41:52Could be a sellout here by the time we get over on Showtime.
41:55Just getting underway.
41:56And again, the main event tonight over on Showtime.
41:58All-action fight.
42:00Marcos Maidana versus Josecito Lopez.
42:03Again, you go to Maidana.
42:04His bout with Amir Khan in 2010 was the fight of the year, according to the Boxing Writers
42:09Association.
42:10He stopped Jesus Soto-Karras back in September.
42:13Looked great in that fight.
42:14Looked like he was really getting to a different level.
42:16And Josecito Lopez, he was the opponent against Victor Ortiz.
42:19You might recall that.
42:20He broke Ortiz's jaw, won the fight, went on to win a spot against Canelo Alvarez.
