00:0024 year old DiCarlo Perez had a 125 amateur career, mostly in his native state of Delaware.
00:07As a pro, he's eight and one over his last nine fights, and he took this fight on short
00:11notice.
00:12Perez last fought in May in Philadelphia, and he won an eight round unanimous decision
00:16against Jesse Nicklow.
00:18He says he's a complete fighter, he's able to do almost anything he wants in the ring.
00:22He can move, he can box, but can he punch?
00:24He has stopped only five of his 18 opponents.
00:27He has a history of being a slow starter.
00:29He won't be able to do that tonight.
00:31Steve, let's go behind the numbers.
00:33On DiCarlo Perez, Barry, we start with misleading.
00:38Perez has KO'd a couple of familiar names in Tyrone Brunson and Shimon Alvarez, but don't
00:43be fooled, both were well past their primes when Perez fought them.
00:47Staying in there, for a fighter who's only 24, Perez is already a somewhat seasoned veteran.
00:52He's always stayed busy, and he's been the eight round distance four times.
00:55And bad losses.
00:56Two of Perez's losses are, shall I say, troublesome.
00:59He lost to Grayson Blake, who's gone two and four since.
01:02And he was stopped by Rafael Montalvo, who's gone one and four since.
01:07And the other half of this matchup, Juan Ubaldo Cabrera is a former Olympian, having represented
01:12his native Dominican Republic both in the 2000 and 2004 games.
01:16He was also a 2003 Pan Am Games gold medalist.
01:18But he's now 36, with a 10 year anniversary as a pro approaching.
01:23His professional journey, though, has been something of an enigma.
01:26He's been inactive, and despite his great amateur success, he's really never stepped up his class
01:30of opponents beyond the mid-level journeyman status.
01:33He won a debatable late round unanimous decision in a comeback fight against Tim Hall back in
01:38June.
01:39It was Perez's first in a year, and only his seventh over the last seven years.
01:45As for style, he says he's more of a boxer than he is a pressure fighter.
01:48But he's 23 and 0, with 16 knockouts.
01:50Steve, behind the numbers.
01:52Very, uh, Cabrera unbeaten, but 14 of Cabrera's 23 bouts have been in his native Dominican Republic,
01:59and the level of opposition in the DR is lower than just about any place else on earth.
02:03Where you been?
02:04In activity, a big problem.
02:06Cabrera has not fought as many as three times in a year since 2009.
02:11And way?
02:12No way.
02:13And in what division does Cabrera belong?
02:16In his eight most recent bouts, he's been as low as 154 and as high as 171.
02:22You can make a case for both these guys being somewhat enigmatic.
02:26Once again, now we'll take it to the center of the ring.
02:28The introduction of the fighters in our second fight of the evening.
02:31So here once more is our ring announcer tonight, Mark Lichtenfeld.
02:34Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the downtown Las Vegas event center for Showbox,
02:47the new generation brought to you by Don King Productions.
02:52The D Las Vegas, downtown Las Vegas event center, and Showtime.
02:57This next bout is being fought in the middleweight division.
03:00We're scheduled for 10 rounds.
03:03Your judges for this contest, Adelaide Byrd, Tim Cheatham, and Ricardo Ocasio.
03:11Our referee in charge is Vic Draculich.
03:16Introducing to you first, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing the black with red.
03:20He weighed in at 160 and 1 1⁄2 pounds.
03:24With a record of 14 wins, three losses, two draws, five wins.
03:28Coming by way of knockout from Atlantic City, New Jersey.
03:32Please welcome DeCarlo Tremendo Perez.
03:41And his opponent, fighting out of the red corner, wearing the black with gold.
03:45He weighed in at an even 160 pounds.
03:48He is undefeated with a record of 23 wins, no losses, 16 wins.
03:54Coming by way of knockout from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the two-time Olympian.
04:00He is Juan Ubaldo Lafiera Cabrera.
04:09Referee Vic Draculich to give the instructions.
04:16All right, gentlemen, this fight's scheduled for 10 rounds.
04:18You received your instructions in the dressing room.
04:20Again, you want to caution you.
04:22Any punchable in this area is going to be called low.
04:27That said, I want you to obey my commands, protect yourselves at all,
04:30time.
04:34Good luck to both of you.
04:35Touch them up.
04:39And with that, we take a look at the numbers for these two middle ways.
04:43This is the lightest Cabrera's been in three years, and it's the heaviest Perez has ever been.
04:48Perez actually did well to come in at 160 and a half because he had only a week's notice for this fight.
04:53The rules, unified rules here in Nevada, no standing eight, no three knockdown,
04:56only the ref could stop the fight.
04:57You can't be saved by the belt in any round.
04:59And the accidental foul rule should the fight be stopped before the end of four, no decision.
05:03After that, we go to the cards, Barry.
05:05All right.
05:05With that, we are set to go.
05:06Ten rounds or less.
05:10Cabrera, something of an unknown quantity.
05:12And, Perez, you know, it's interesting.
05:13We talked to the fighters the day before the fight.
05:14And every now and now, especially in a last-minute substitute, you really get the idea.
05:18The guy is maybe more interested in collecting a paycheck than he is going out there and being
05:23competitive.
05:24None of the three of us had that thought about Perez.
05:26We feel like he's there to win the fight.
05:28Exactly.
05:28And on short notice, too.
05:30So I think he's a fighter who's better than his record.
05:34Yeah, I agree with that.
05:35And I think he needs to take advantage of Cabrera's inactivity.
05:38I mean, the guy's only fought one or two fights ever since 2010.
05:42You know, he's 36 years old.
05:43I mean, he's pretty well-preserved.
05:45He's not beat up.
05:47But, I mean, he's 36 years old.
05:49It's taken him a long time to get his boxing career going, guys.
05:53He still lives in the Dominican Republic.
05:55Works for the Army.
05:56He trains.
05:58He's a physical trainer for the Army.
06:00And we take a look.
06:01The amateur experience.
06:02Quite a difference to Carlo Perez.
06:03Never fighting at the international or even the national level,
06:06where Cabrera was a Pan Am Games champion and a two-time Olympian.
06:10One thing Perez is doing here, Raul, is he's dropping that left hand.
06:14And he is there for right hand from Cabrera,
06:16who just missed a couple of opportunities.
06:19You see, Perez is still not wasting any time.
06:21You know, he's, uh, looks to me, you know,
06:23he's pressuring with intelligent pressure.
06:25He's jabbing his way in.
06:28He's got to make a Cabrera fight.
06:42He's a little bit far off, Perez.
06:44He's trying to land his right.
06:46He's got to get a little bit closer.
06:47That's it.
06:48He's got to tap him with the jab.
06:49Keep touching him with the jab.
06:51Once he does that, then he leaves his lead right go.
06:53He just let it go again.
06:54But he's a little far off distance.
06:57He's got to get close.
06:58He's got to step up to him.
06:59It's the first round of a ten-round fight.
07:07One thing about Perez, he's been a notoriously slow starter
07:11against Nicolau.
07:12He said he was not warmed up at all.
07:14That should not be a problem here tonight.
07:16Good left hook by Cabrera.
07:17Yeah, that was a nice check left hook.
07:21Turned it into...
07:21He was going as a jab, and right at the end,
07:23he turned into a check left hook,
07:24and it seemed like it rattled Perez a little bit.
07:27I think that's his second time in this first round
07:29that Perez has been rocked by a left hook
07:31and a lead left hook at that.
07:38Very effective first round so far for Cabrera.
07:43Looks like he's trying to suck in Perez.
07:47Constantly taking half steps backwards.
07:50And as Raul said,
07:51I don't think that Perez is comfortable with the distance.
07:57That's where Perez has to work.
07:59Good body time. Come up the middle.
08:01Break that guard apart.
08:02You've got to be careful with Cabrera.
08:04I mean, he's got good skill set from what I saw in his first round.
08:10Good round for Cabrera.
08:12We did talk with DiCarlo Perez about what he needs to do to win.
08:15Here's what he told us.
08:20Constant pressure. Smart pressure.
08:22Not anything crazy coming forward looking sloppy over feet
08:26or anything like that, but just constant smart pressure coming forward
08:29and attacking the body smartly and placing my shots well.
08:34All right, stay in his face.
08:35Finish the punches up.
08:36Don't rush through.
08:37Make him feel your power.
08:38Okay?
08:39You look good.
08:39Okay?
08:41Deep breath.
08:42How you feel?
08:43Good.
08:44Cut over the right eye.
08:45I'm ruling it due to a punch.
08:46Good. Thank you.
08:47Work on the right eye now.
08:48Okay?
08:49You already cutting him up.
08:50You're cutting him up.
08:50Okay?
08:51Relax.
08:52Calm.
08:52You have a lot of time.
08:54Yo, I need you to cover us up.
08:55The referee just said no.
09:01All right, take it out, guys.
09:02Here.
09:02Me there.
09:14There is a cut, apparently.
09:15I did not see it, but a cut over the right eye of Cabrera caused by a headbutt.
09:20It doesn't seem to be anything that would bother him.
09:28And we understand it was ruled a punch, so that cut was not a headbutt.
09:32After all, it was ruled a punch.
09:36Another left hook there by Cabrera.
09:37He's getting in with that shot.
09:38Cabrera never been cut before.
09:40First time.
09:41And it looked like there's a little bit of sense of urgency in Cabrera.
09:44Now you see he's attacking more instead of backpedaling.
09:47Seemed like it at the beginning of this round.
09:51He was catching him with that left hook.
09:56And if you see Perez, he's falling right into it.
09:58You see, he did say he was going to pressure him, but he's not giving him any head movement,
10:03any waist movement on, you know, moving side to side.
10:05He's coming straight in, so he's falling right into Cabrera's punches.
10:10This is where Perez says he wants to fight the fight,
10:12but even in close quarters here, Cabrera's getting the best of it.
10:19That right eye of Cabrera stuck to look nasty.
10:21Yes, it is.
10:22Didn't see the blood at all until just now.
10:24It's interesting that he has never been cut in a fight before,
10:35but he did have scar tissue over his right eye, which is very noticeable.
10:38And we spoke with him yesterday and we asked him about it.
10:40He said it was from an accident outside the ring.
10:43Very important when they get close.
10:51As you guys have alluded to, that the Carlos Perez works.
10:55And he's got to pull his elbows back so that Cabrera can't hold on to him,
11:00which is exactly what Cabrera's been doing.
11:03Both guys got to watch their heads, especially Cabrera.
11:06The way he's, uh, excuse me, Perez, the way he's coming in.
11:12Cabrera needs to be more alert with that.
11:15I think they just headbutted again.
11:16I think they did.
11:17They've been very close on a couple of occasions.
11:23And as the night moves on, one thing we can look for,
11:25will fighters lack in energy because of the heat?
11:28Now, granted, the sun's down.
11:29Obviously, it's nighttime here.
11:31But it remains well over 90 degrees.
11:33Yeah, and they're under the lights.
11:35Right.
11:35Yeah, well, I hope they hydrated themselves right.
11:38You know, drank a lot of water, a lot of fluids.
11:41Because even, you know, we have dry heat here in Vegas.
11:44So that'll suck up all the fluids in a fighter, so.
11:47Ooh, right hand slipped in by Perez a moment ago
11:51that did get Cabrera to take a backward step.
11:54I don't think it really affected him.
11:55But Cabrera coming back with three and four punch combinations.
12:02What's really showing right now is the savvy of Cabrera.
12:05Yeah, you can see he's a smart fighter.
12:11And it has to do with all that amateur experience.
12:13You can see he's a smart fighter.
12:20Okay.
12:23May that.
12:26Get some muffins.
12:27Well, we mentioned that we thought here that it was a headbutt that caused the cut in the
12:37first round, but the referee ruled it a punch.
12:39See what you think.
12:41Clearly a butt, and Draculic in between rounds one and two came to Carlo Perez and said that
12:49he was ruling it was caused by a punch, and that's very relevant because if the fight
12:53is stopped and the referee ruled it a punch and not that butt, then obviously Perez would
12:59win the fight by TKO.
13:02Yeah, and that cut is pretty nasty, as you pointed out, Steve.
13:08So we come to round three.
13:09Long way to go here for Cabrera, although Cabrera, at least our opinion here, and I'm speaking
13:15for both of you guys, is that he's been in pretty much control of the fight.
13:19Yeah, I agree.
13:22As long as Cabrera uses that long jab, he's giving him a little bit of lateral movement
13:27to the right, to the left, and, you know, holds him in the inside, but even in the inside,
13:32he's got good inside games, Cabrera.
13:35I think Perez is a little bit sloppy in the inside, and Cabrera coming up the middle, little
13:40short shots, sharper with his punches.
13:44And Cabrera certainly is showing Perez the whole arsenal so far in this fight.
13:58See, again, that's where Perez wants to be, but Cabrera is still outgunning him in close
14:02quarters.
14:03And you see Cabrera is very relaxed in there.
14:07He just keeps working on it.
14:09I call that rat-ta-tat-tat.
14:11You see rat-ta-tat-tat, and then Perez sees more anxious in there.
14:16He's opening up wide, and Cabrera, he's changing the speed of his punches, too.
14:22You know, he touches, touch, touch, then he blows up with a big shot.
14:27Don't be surprised if he lands that left hook again, guys, at the end.
14:29And he seems perfectly content to fight Perez's fight here.
14:32And why not?
14:34Well, remember, he's probably the naturally bigger guy he's been fighting at higher weights.
14:38Maybe that strength is showing on the inside.
14:40A lot of those shots are getting there in close quarters.
14:43Chopping right hand there.
14:45Left hand in underneath, and another good left hand from Cabrera.
14:52And Cabrera not neglecting the body, either.
14:54Going to the body quite a bit.
14:56And you see Perez holding on now.
14:58Cabrera needs to take a step, just a little step back, create some room there.
15:02Get more leverage on the shots.
15:03Too much on him.
15:10Well, again, you heard Perez tell you, in that soundbite we ran at the end of the first round,
15:16that he wants to be as close as he can.
15:18Well, guess what?
15:20Be careful what you wish for.
15:22Yeah.
15:25Another good right hand by Cabrera.
15:27Uppercut slipped in by Perez.
15:32Well, this is a whole different fight this round,
15:33because they stayed on the inside the whole round.
15:36And they see what kind of shape Perez is in.
15:38He did take the fight in one week's notice.
15:39That's what he said.
15:40And is he ready for this type of battle?
15:44And not only is he getting out punched,
15:45he's getting pushed back, too,
15:47which does not look good for the judges.
15:48He's sitting down on his putts.
16:01He's loading up now.
16:02Nice work, buddy.
16:03Nice work, buddy.
16:04Nice work, buddy.
16:06Nice work, buddy.
16:07There you go, man.
16:07There you go, man.
16:08Yeah, I mean, Cabrera has won this fight on the outside.
16:11And to us, he's won this fight on the inside as well.
16:14And the three.
16:15And here's a look at Trevor Bryan.
16:18The dream is very relaxed right now.
16:20Very confident young guy stepping way up in class.
16:26Meantime, we come to round four
16:28between DiCarlo Perez and Juan Ubaldo Cabrera.
16:32Cabrera has pretty much dominated things.
16:35Perez just now slipped an uppercut in,
16:38but it's one only.
16:40And very interesting show stats from round three.
16:42Cabrera threw 105 punches.
16:45We knew he was busy.
16:46But to give you an idea of how much
16:47that round was fought on the inside,
16:49Cabrera, 26 connects, not a single jab,
16:52all 26 punches, power shots.
16:54Right, and he's a boxer.
16:55Yeah.
16:56But so we were told, of course.
16:57Yes, that's right.
16:58Well, we said he was a little nigma.
17:02Well, he's showing he could do both.
17:04He's got fun, just about everybody in the amateur,
17:07in his amateur career.
17:07And you can see he's able to adapt and make changes.
17:10I mean, that's, you want to see that in a fighter.
17:13And now Pera is up on his toes,
17:15looking to fight at long range.
17:17A little holding and hitting there from Perez.
17:20Now, we have a long way to go,
17:21but we did see Cabrera fight
17:23on the Wilder Molina part in Birmingham, off TV.
17:27And he was fighting a far inferior opponent
17:29to DiCarlo Perez.
17:30And he looked way worse than he looks tonight.
17:32He looks good tonight.
17:32So, go figure.
17:35Said he ate something bad before that fight.
17:37Had all kinds of stomach issues during the fight.
17:38Maybe it's true.
17:44Well, significantly,
17:45I think Cabrera's winning the fight outside
17:47and winning the fight inside,
17:48which makes it extremely tough on Perez.
17:50Not too many other places to be.
17:52No, that's right.
17:53I think Perez has no choice but to be in the inside,
17:56but it's not going well in the inside either.
17:58No, it's not.
17:58If he's on the outside,
18:01you see Cabrera's just his skill set.
18:04You know, his movement, his footwork, his speed.
18:08His shots are shorter.
18:10He gets tagged up from the outside.
18:17DiPerez got to be cut there.
18:18DiPerez got to be careful.
18:19He's a little straight up when he's on the inside there.
18:21He's not bending at the knees much.
18:22He's not bending at the waist.
18:24And Perez was able to do a little bit of business
18:26in that last exchange.
18:28And we talked about the fact that Perez historically
18:35has been a slow starter,
18:36so that may be holding true again.
18:39We'll see.
18:42Good right hand there.
18:44I think Perez started kind of fast in the first round, Barry,
18:47but I think he's slowing down.
18:48He's getting winded.
18:49Maybe.
18:50Yes.
18:52And Cabrera has thrown some good body shots.
18:54He's really invested early in body shots,
18:57and now they're taking a toll so far in this fourth round.
19:00He did take this fight on one week's notice,
19:02but he told us he's been in the gym for five weeks,
19:04and in fact,
19:05only had one week out of the gym in the last three months.
19:07So in his mind,
19:09he's at a five-week camp.
19:13Touch us out there!
19:14Better round for you out here, I think.
19:15Good body shot for Cabrera.
19:27Beautiful round.
19:28How do you like that round?
19:29All right.
19:30Come on.
19:30Sit down.
19:31Hold on.
19:32Rub his arm, guys.
19:33Rub his arm.
19:34Come on.
19:34I want to.
19:35He wants to finish with the right uppercut, that's what they're telling him in the corner.
20:03He doesn't throw, he's saying that the other guy doesn't throw.
20:08Oh, but now they're talking in Spanish.
20:12And I'm trying to do my best translation, guys.
20:15That was good.
20:16He does have a little bit of an accent there, so it was a little bit hard for me.
20:24This is round five of this ten-round fight.
20:30Well, Barry, you and I are horse racing fans, and sometimes you see a horse take a big lead in a race, and he went too fast too soon, and he gets caught.
20:37Well, we talked about Cabrera throwing 105 punches in round three, and round 40 through 37 punches.
20:43So is he the one slowing?
20:44Yeah, it would be interesting to see.
20:46Or can't imagine he'd be taking a round off that early in the fight.
20:50And he lost that round on my scorecard.
20:52On mine too.
20:54Which to me makes this round a pivotal round in the fight.
20:57Because if DiCarlo Perez can continue his momentum, he can get back in this fight.
21:01If not, he's gonna start falling too far behind to catch up on points at least.
21:05And one thing he is doing is he's varying his look now.
21:07He's been outside the last round.
21:09He's both outside and then the end of the round he is inside.
21:11This round he starts out on the outside.
21:13I think Perez needs to catch him with some good solid hard shots.
21:17Get that respect, you know.
21:19Like Steve said, it's the fifth round, and it could be a...
21:22It is a pivotal round, you know.
21:24Right here, we'll see what's gonna happen.
21:30Because Cabrera could get this...
21:31I mean, Perez could get this round, then he's back in the fight.
21:36We talk about Cabrera being 36 years old.
21:38He didn't turn pro until he was 26.
21:41So he might be a little fresher than the numbers would suggest.
21:43Yeah.
21:44I was watching the Carlos Perez between rounds, guys.
21:55Nobody was feeding him any water.
21:57It's probably a mistake.
21:58It's 98 degrees out here.
22:00Yeah, you saw those figures.
22:0198 degrees, only 18% humidity, but...
22:03Yeah.
22:04I think back to Barry McGuigan not drinking any water
22:06during his fight with Stevie Cruz.
22:08Of course, that was during the day in Vegas,
22:09but that cost a big time.
22:11He had nothing left in the late rounds,
22:12and he lost the featherweight title.
22:13You put him at my shoulder.
22:14Yes!
22:15You have to hydrate.
22:16Yep.
22:17Got to keep drinking that water.
22:18Even I'm drinking my water right now, guys.
22:19Yeah, that's right.
22:20You're all hydrating.
22:21Yes.
22:38it seemed to be quite the pop that he had
22:52that'd be another perez round huh i mean
22:56this round may still be there for the taking for either guy
23:00both guys got to make some adjustments coming into the sixth round who wants it
23:0888 88 perez starting to work that uppercut a little bit more
23:15not a lot on perez's punches i'll tell you that no there's not but that could be said both ways
23:25somewhere at the midway point of this fight you said that was a pivotal round that at least
23:29in my opinion that would be a very difficult round to score well as you look at the halftime
23:34numbers with the exception of the body punches this is obviously a pretty close fight the jazz
23:38only four difference the power punches landed at only two advantage for cabrera and we take a look
23:45at the that was clearly the butt that opened the cut yet it was ruled a punch because you could see
23:52he's pawing at the blood and that was way back in round one and there's the cut over the right eye
23:57here we'll see cabrera he needs to get back to the basics you know he's got the reach get back to
24:08boxing use his long jab and you'll pick him apart from the outside and there we see perez
24:13perez needs to attack he needs to get close dig hard to the body come up the middle push him just make
24:18it a rough rough fight round six and decision still very much up in the air i believe
24:31that last round to me was a really pivotal round and i could see
24:35i could make a case for either guy to be honest yeah clearly was not won clearly by either fighter
24:43he's a good right hand by perez but slapping
24:52i don't think perez is not going to win the fight back and out guys he's got to come forward
25:03we're only at the halfway mark but you do have to ask the question you know cabrera throwing 105
25:07punches around three we haven't seen much output from him since no
25:11now he's getting outworked this round he's particularly getting outworked
25:17that's what prayers just to be three punch combination yeah he's successful in there jab in
25:29jabs have been an underutilized weapon from both fighters in this fight of course most of the fights
25:34but fun on the inside
25:42well when you look at cabrera do you see some of this skill set that you that would suggest that
25:46he's been a two-time olympian now i you know right now his conditioning is it's it's really bad you
25:53know for a guy that was a two-time olympian he's got a lot of experience he's 36 years old you know
25:58he used to be more disciplined in the gym and you know he should be in better shape because he's
26:02running out of gas he's got tires and i think uh perez might be taking over in this round well he's
26:08certainly scoring with more patches
26:16he's a world-class athlete cabrera you know you're an olympian you got to follow you know you got to be
26:21dedicated you got to you know you go pro it's a it's a job it's an everyday job it's not just a seasonal
26:33always got to stay in shape stay in the gyms
26:37well he does i mean he stays in the dominican he comes to florida to train but stays in the dominican
26:42of course very little sparring i would expect in a dominican republic
26:47all right because he just don't know i mean he seems to be fit but there's being fitness being
26:52boxing fit that's a big difference yeah
27:00low right hand from cabrera and you know it's a subtle thing but i think it's still meaningful
27:04or potentially meaningful big right couple of right uppercuts there by perez but when they're on the
27:08inside it's cabrera pushing perez back you see it now but i think perez got the best of them but coming
27:16up the middle i think he has in the last couple of rounds there's another headbutt
27:27well here's the guy still to come he is the experienced derrick rossi he will fight the bright
27:31young prospect trevor bryant that is our main event that is still to come after we're all done
27:37dancing with juan ubaldo carrera and de carlo perez
27:52he doesn't know how to work in close
28:09a lot of hooks in the jab that's what uh the traders sell him in the corner
28:23a little bit of swelling on the right cheek of cabrera i don't think it'll affect anything in
28:27this fight we come to round seven i'm interested in your scorecard steve well i have cabrera ahead
28:32by two points i'm guessing you guys might have it even that's the way i have it yeah no i i agree
28:37with uh steve i got cabrera about hit by two points 58 56. but here's a stat that will uh support
28:44barry's belief which is that perez has outthrown and outlanded cabrera over the last three rounds
28:49and i'm giving him the last three rounds
28:51but he is coming on it looks like you see cabrera holding on right there
29:05i would have to think but it's 98 degrees and you're having an infight like this gotta be
29:09exhausting it's gotta be i don't care what kind of shape you're doing oh yeah down on the trenches
29:14you're pushing you're shoving you're getting hit you're getting but holding on yeah but everything
29:21goes in there on the inside good left hand from perez and another good left hand from perez and that
29:28drives cabrera backward and you know what's caused that is you know perez is now shortening up on his
29:34shot now he's not swinging his wife coming down the middle and he caught him with some good solid shots
29:43perez seems to have found the home for the right uppercut so look for that punch some more yeah
29:46and it's solid too because if it's rather buckled uh cabrera that's always this buckle a little bit
30:07they're gonna take a point away from cabrera that's huge
30:10wow i mean in a close fight like this that is huge and big draculich did tell him who's going
30:16to take a point the next time he did and they said was after rapid punching because draculich was
30:20tapping the back of his head
30:27so this could be a real difference maker if perez goes on to win this round i think right now he's
30:31winning this one and that point might be the difference right barry oh good right hand again
30:49crowd started to rally to perez here too chopping right hand from cabrera
30:53well perez is he's throwing the power shots guys he's yeah he's put some hurt he's the most dominant
31:02round in quite a while since the third definitely yes it's when when cabrera dominated the third
31:07this is perez's big round another good right hand at the top of the head of cabrera and i backed him up
31:11up again oh nice again that's solid but they ran right into it not up the middle too yeah cabrera got
31:24there with a hard right hand i think that got perez's attention
31:30and right back comes perez and that knocked cabrera backward and culminates a very effective round
31:36that's what the point deduction was for it was not for rabbit punching
32:06it was for holding behind the head 10 8 round though guys 10 8 round oh yes 10 8 round i got it even
32:12now it's a game changer yeah you have it even steve up yes perez had a huge huge seventh round left
32:21right combination all fight long cabrera has not been great at keeping his left glove up he paid for it
32:26in that moment they're telling perez that he's tired and they may have something but he still don't
32:35want to get careless i think cabrera got he ain't got no more legs guys he's leaving his own body he's in
32:45survival mode
32:50only 29 punches thrown well power punch is thrown by cabrera but you see perez doubling up
33:00cabrera just going backward very easily now perez coming strong down the middle all he's got to do is
33:06jabbing jab and throw one two down the middle that's all he needs and finished with a little
33:11nice body shot good body shot starting body shots
33:14he's working now he's he's confident those body shots would make a tired fighter more tired
33:30his stage right now the eighth round i'm telling you a body shot is a lot more effective than it
33:34than a head shot they they take everything out of you bear now they tell perez don't push his head down
33:46fight on the other side here it's always telling to see which fighters keep trying to do the whole
33:50day right now it looks to me like cabrera's keep trying to hold more than suddenly more than perez
33:54there's two more uppercuts from perez they're not big punches but they're there
34:00perez tightening up in his defense nice left hand
34:04combination for cabrera
34:09and a right hand and a right uppercut from perez that uppercut you mentioned it steve is really
34:13becoming a weapon barry you mentioned not a lot of power on these shots very true but it enables
34:20fighters to throw more punches another good body shot with the right hand
34:29perez you can see his confidence growing this fight he's got a good rhythm going on he built the
34:34past two rounds he got in that rhythm and he's uh busy with his shots
34:41three and four punch combinations and loaded up with his shots two big big punches down the middle
34:46step to the side and now that's going to be the second warning for that so if he keeps holding he's
34:54going to get a point taken away from him no you don't need that he's uh he's in control right now
35:00right hand there as cabrera ducked in
35:11here fix that glove all right not a deduction i'm sure perez breathing a sigh of relief here but we also
35:22thought the same thing there
35:34work carlos this is your fight
35:39so about 20 seconds remaining here in round number eight as this fight has been taken over
35:45by dakar perez yeah he turned it around four or five jabs
35:59excellent round for perez as he continues to dominate the latter part of this fight at least
36:04the opinion at this table it is dakardo perez and guadabalda cabrera still to come our main event of the
36:10evening trevor bryan and derek rossi we've had a one round whack out here we're outdoors at the d in las
36:17vegas i'm barry tomkins steve farhard raul marquez alongside happy birthday to raul marquez gracias amigo
36:25we had a big fets last night honoring el campeon diamante hey you're getting pretty good with the accent
36:35this is round nine and juan ubaldo cabrera is going to have to find something that has not been there
36:59at least for the last two rounds barry it's really time for both these guys to dig deep i don't think
37:05it's overstating the case to say these are two critical rounds for both guys careers yeah
37:10because perez at 14 and 3 that reeks of being a journeyman he wants to step up and if he beats
37:15an undefeated fighter like cabrera it does wonders for him and cabrera hey he's 36 years old 23 and 0
37:22against subpar competition what does a loss do against him yeah it's it's big for both guys here
37:27and along with fighting in the heat of las vegas these guys have not been this far into fights
37:33very often cabrera twice to carlo perez never remember perez taking this 10 round fight on seven
37:40days notice yeah i don't think he was supposed to win this fight but he's he's uh he's a hit on my
37:44scorecard yeah a loss for cabrera i think that would bring him way down in his career i mean like
37:50you said 36 years old where's he gonna go i mean after a loss it's gonna have to take tough fights
37:57after this we started out really well in this fight and it looked like a very different fighter
38:03from the one we saw down in birmingham as steve mentioned the non-tv fight he won the fight but
38:08against an overmatched opponent
38:16he's very busy at the beginning of the fight i mean a couple of rounds there he was throwing over
38:19100 punches and that's that's a very a lot of punches per round yeah he's never been the same since
38:25that third round that was the turning point of the fight i had him up three zero at that point so
38:30did that yeah but since then i haven't been able to give him around i know you guys did
38:43and again when they're on the inside it's it's perez getting pushed back but
38:47that doesn't score points you have to land significant shots to score points
38:51but you see he's moving back but he's throwing punches moving back and he's coming up the middle
38:57moving back through there he is and i think his punches are a bit more effective they got more power
39:02on them paredes punches are more like slapping punches like i'm surviving that you know i'm just
39:11he's waiting for the better time good body shot again by perez and he comes with the uppercut once
39:18again it's been a very effective weapon of a sharp right hand right there
39:23and a lot of cabreras punches he's getting smothered by perez
39:28final 30 seconds of round nine
39:41there's a right hand from cabreras and a right hand return from perez and another right hand from perez
39:54perez finishing this round with a bit of a flourish
39:58but i think the end of the round is going to give it to perez
40:00i don't want to hear any more from this corner take control
40:14you don't got to be hard man just let the hands go
40:17you're already winning you got to win this fight this round a little bit
40:20he's telling me you got to throw you have to throw
40:38left hooks you got to throw you got to put your hands in there
40:41all right finish strong i love you finish strong
40:56so this the final three minutes of this fight been a very interesting fight
41:01no knockdowns in the fight neither man has really been hurt
41:04and he encouraged both men to finish strongly and i think
41:13you don't know what the judges are seeing if they're seeing it the same way as we might be here
41:19well barry sometimes you have to weigh jabs against power shots that's not the case in this fight
41:23they have not been that many meaningful jabs and perez going into the last round a 149 to 112
41:28advantage in power shots landed yeah and he landed about three at the start of this round too there's a double jab
41:37perez looks he looks hungrier than the cabaretta he wants it
41:42he don't want to leave it to the judges i think he's ahead i got him about two points but
41:48he's trying to end it he was trying to make a statement
41:51i think he did a great job at the end of the last round and he starts out right where he left off here
41:55in the 10th
42:00well perez won the first minute of that round and still has that good momentum going yeah you don't
42:05want to get too cute though and stop fighting and as you look at the total punches in round nine
42:10well that's the kind of round that could be scored for cabrero i think we all gave it to perez but
42:16one or two rounds going the other way this fight becomes really tight exactly and i still think
42:20that point that was taken away by big drakovich could play a part in this yeah yeah that would be
42:25come in the eyes of the double jab come on punch out of there punch out punch out punch out
42:40love the cut there breaking the guard yeah breaking the weapon
42:44now giving them little angles see little subtle movement like that messes up the other guy's balance
42:55you see uh perez doing that
43:11cabrera take a deep breath
43:14i think perez is doing enough in this round also
43:16uh hey shots says get in there faster some exchanges there you see uh cabrera trying but
43:25he's just opening up a little bit more and uh perez is beating him to the punch final 30 seconds of
43:29this fight and there's the uppercut again it caught cabrera leaning in
43:35neither of these guys exactly gennady galovkin when it comes to power
43:38for middleweight so if that's the case whoever throws more punches is very likely to win the fight and
43:44we don't think that's been perez and the show stats would indicate it has been perez
43:49final 10 seconds
43:53cabrera slips the left hand in the right hand behind it and he takes the left hand there's another left
43:57hand from cabrera
43:58that's in the hands of the judges
44:19two veteran judges in adelaide bird and ricardo ocasio
44:22and uh one of the younger judges that been around about six years tim cheetah
44:27he's been getting a lot of work lately you always have experienced officials in nevada
44:31yes
44:39let's take a look at how this fight progressed steve
44:45well it really was a tale of two fights in a sense because a butt there that opened up a cut
44:51over cabrera's right eye but with that said he dominated the first three rounds specifically
44:56round three after round three it was all perez and a key moment in round seven when referee
45:03vick draculich penalizes cabrera point for holding the neck
45:12good trading perez busier and more accurate down the stretch
45:16close rounds but the kind of rounds you feel fairly confident giving one fighter or the other
45:23and that right uppercut that uh de carlo perez found late in the fight he used it very well in the
45:29last three rounds take a look at the numbers from this fight and they tell a story also yeah 50
45:37punch power edge for perez threw more landed more body punches slight edge to perez but the activity and
45:45the accuracy should be enough i think we'll see we're going to find out yeah yeah so the judges
45:50scores are in and we'll take you to the center of the ring mark lichtenfeld will give us the final
45:56decision mark
46:05ladies and gentlemen after 10 hard fought rounds we go to the scorecards judge adelaide bird scores about
46:1397 92. tim cheatham and ricardo ocasio both see it 98 91 for your winner by unanimous decision
46:25de carlo tremando
46:32so and even more lopsided victory for de carlo perez and earned victory and we said this right at the
46:37beginning round this guy when we talked to him he came here with the idea of winning this fight and
46:40he executed it oh he had the right attitude uh you know he started a little bit slow but i think uh it
46:46was uh a good thing for him that uh his opponent threw a lot of punches and got he got tired and uh perez
46:54showed that he wanted to fight he would stay very busy all through the fight the second half of the
46:57fight he took over landed some hard shots power shots hurt the olympian cabrera at times and uh he got the
47:04win and i think it's a big win for him it's a actually it's an upset because i don't think they
47:08expected him to win tonight jump starts his career he's eight and one over his last nine fights now he
47:13goes to nine and one over his last uh ten fights and uh pretty impressive i think i don't think there's
47:19any question about it we now move to our main event of the evening from here at the d in las vegas on
