Felix "Tito" Trinidad defends the IBF Welterweight Title against Freddie Pendleton on Showtime Championship Boxing.
Transcript
00:00That hook in the arms and his neck snapped back.
00:02He was, for all intents and purposes, finished.
00:04Vazquez now 12-3-1 in world title fights.
00:0747-7-3 overall.
00:09And obviously the step up in weight did not have any adverse effect on Wilfredo Vazquez.
00:14So here at the Mirage Grand Ballroom, getting set for the main event.
00:17Felix Pineda versus Freddie Pendleton for the IBF Welterweight Championship.
00:22Well, over the past few years, the Welterweight, or 147-pound division, has become one of the more glamorous in boxing.
00:30While it's easy to get lost in the shuffle of the many alphabet soup groupings, the Welterweights have three genuine golden champions.
00:38Tonight's headliner, Felix Pineda is the IBF title holder.
00:41Ike Korte, another impressive champion, heads up the WBA, while the talented Pernell Sweet Pea Whitaker is the WBC champion.
00:49The question is, has Felix Pineda succeeded in gaining equal recognition with his champion rivals?
00:56Bobby, your thoughts.
00:57Well, Pernell Whitaker right now remains number one or number two in everybody's book as pound for pound best in the world.
01:02So no one has reached that level in the welterweight division yet, but Felix Pineda is right on his heels.
01:07He is a superstar on the rise, there's no question about it.
01:09He's 23 years old and oh so impressive.
01:12Well, Pineda told us he'd love to unify the title, but the man he really wants is Pernell Whitaker.
01:17But first things first, and tonight it's fearless Freddie Pendleton who is thinking upset.
01:22It's Trinidad versus Pendleton straight ahead.
01:26I definitely think that he's looking past Freddie Pendleton fight.
01:31He feels that he's going to get past me, but he's not going to be very difficult.
01:36I mean, that's good for me.
01:38All my concentration is on Freddie Pendleton.
01:47This is the fight that awaits me now.
01:51After Pendleton, we will look for Whitaker, Corte, and Norris.
01:55Right now it's Pendleton.
01:59Pendleton is a great fighter.
02:00But he will not be able to withstand the pressure.
02:08And as the fight goes on, I will dominate due to my reposition and excellent boxing ability.
02:14I plan myself to go in and show Felix Trinidad some new moves, some different moves, something
02:22that he's not used to seeing.
02:23A lot of fighters are scared to punch with him.
02:26I'm not afraid to punch with him.
02:28A lot of fighters don't really show him anything.
02:32I haven't really seen anybody counterpunch him too effectively at all, and I think I can
02:37do that well with Trinidad.
02:38Well, I always go into the ring to win, so my victories have come due to my boxing ability
02:49and my great power.
02:53The opponents that I fought, round by round, I always dominated because of my power and physical
02:59conditioning.
03:02Damn it.
03:04Damn it.
03:04Damn it.
03:05He's about five minutes.
03:06He's in trouble.
03:09I mean, I couldn't say that, uh, I mean, I have respect for him.
03:15But, uh, I don't believe.
03:21I have seen the best welterweights of this time, including several undefeated fighters.
03:26Because of the fight I've had, I believe that makes me the best welterweight in the world.
03:31Two contrasting personalities, and Bobby, what does Trinidad hope to accomplish tonight,
03:40besides victory, of course?
03:41Well, the victory is still first and foremost.
03:43He wants to remain champion.
03:44He wants to stay impressive.
03:45But being extra impressive, I think, here against a guy like Freddie Pendleton, who's really
03:49come into his own, had a world champion, was moving up.
03:51I think that's the key here.
03:52He wants to be impressive.
03:53He wants to try and force, by public demand, unification with either Ike Forte or Pernod
03:58Whitaker.
03:58He really wants Whitaker, and he hopes that this fight will catapult him toward that goal.
04:02And just for the record, a prediction.
04:04Freddie Pendleton has really come into his own over the past five years.
04:07And he's 40 and 20.
04:08But a lot of that 20 in the way of loss, you've got to throw out.
04:10He's learned to punch.
04:11Got some great moves and good speed.
04:13He's fighting better.
04:14I still think that the talent here is Trinidad, but mid to late round knockout.
04:18All right.
04:19Can Pendleton's experience make him a dangerous opponent?
04:23Bert, are your thoughts?
04:24Well, the experience he's had is very bad at the beginning.
04:26He stumbled a lot at the beginning of his career.
04:28A lot of hard luck later on.
04:29And I think the hardest piece of luck he's got, he's got to get in this ring here in
04:33a few minutes and face one of the hottest fighters in boxing in Trinidad.
04:37So it's a very tough thing to go.
04:39And if he should win, I would consider it one of the great upsets of this year.
04:43So I don't think it takes a genius to realize what's ahead.
04:46Your prediction.
04:47Sort of redundant.
04:47I do believe that Trinidad should win in a middle round knockout.
04:51All right.
04:51Right now, let's get a look at the challenger.
04:5433-year-old, fearless Freddie Pendleton, originally from Philadelphia, now living in Miami.
04:59Tonight, his sixth world championship fight.
05:02But none of those fights, we should point out, were at the welterweight level.
05:06For the record, he's 2-2-1 in those fights.
05:08Overall, a record of 40-20-4 with 28 knockouts.
05:14Okay, let's go.
05:15Yeah, Miami!
05:17Miami!
05:17Miami!
05:18Let's go!
05:19Let's go!
05:20Miami!
05:21Miami!
05:22Miami!
05:22Miami!
05:23Miami!
05:23Go, go, go, go, go, go
05:32Go, go, go, go, go, go
05:35Miami!
05:37Go, Miami, holly!
05:41We gotta go behind it.
05:50That's right.
05:50Let it go, let it go.
05:54Let it go, let it go, let it go.
05:56Watch your back.
06:00Let it go.
06:20The sequined look of fearless Freddie Pendleton, rated number two by the IBF as a junior welterweight,
06:26although he's fighting tonight as a welterweight, following the uninspiring start going 12-12-1,
06:31pinning his rocky beginnings on mismanagement and thrown into fights for the wrong reasons he did in a foul face.
06:37He's 28-8-3 since that quality start.
06:39The highlight of his dramatic turnaround, the IBF lightweight title in 92.
06:43He has been in there with some of the best, including Pernell Whitaker,
06:46who he lost to by decision back in 1990 in his first crack at the title.
06:50And now, here's the champion, the knockout artist Felix Trinidad out of Cupi Alto, Puerto Rico,
06:5528-0 with 24 knockouts, ninth title defense,
06:59and Trinidad previously has not shied away from quality opposition,
07:03having fought many number one contenders and former champions like Maurice Blocker,
07:07Hector Camacho, Yuri Boykampus, and Oba Kahn.
07:10Here he comes.
07:11Puerto Rico
07:41Oh
08:11Oh
08:35With the music feel extended who possesses one of the highest knockout ratios in boxing today at
08:4086% averaging just under four rounds for about so a friendly reminder don't go to the fridge
08:46He's had seven first-round knockouts nine straight KOs prior to meeting Hector Camacho in 94
08:529-0 with eight knockouts in world title fights and keep in mind he's only 23
08:56He began his championship run with a devastating second round KO a two-time world champ Maurice blocker in 1993
09:02The very loose Felix Trinidad
09:05Let's see how they stack up on paper as we check out the tail of the tape immediately
09:08You notice the disparity in age at 33 penalty 10 years older than Trinidad Trinidad has a two and a half inch height advantage
09:15Both tipping the scales at the contract weight of 147 and the reach almost even
09:20IVF rules for this world championship thought scoring is under the 10-point must three judges for the fight
09:26No standing eight count no three knockdown rule only the referee can stop the fight
09:30A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round if an accidental foul occurs before the end of the sixth round
09:36It is ruled a no decision if it happens after the completion of the sixth they go to the star cards only completed rounds of scoring

13:27please welcome one of the young stars of boxing today
13:30making his ninth defense of his title introducing the undefeated
13:36ibf welterweight champion of the world
13:40felix
13:53once again our referee in charge now to give instructions we have richard steel
14:00we have richard steel
14:17okay i spoke to both fighters in the dressing room
14:20i'm cautioning again obey my commands at all times
14:23if there's any questions take hands and good luck
14:34despite being 28-0 and 24 ko's and close to being considered a great champion the chin of felix
14:40finidad remains a question mark he's been down this weight telling us this is my weight 147 he claims
14:45he lost the 135 pound title because of his weight he says he got a raw deal against raphael ruedas
14:52we'll see what happens here he comes right out winging does freddy peddles in the challenger
14:56he got nothing to lose he said he's going to come out he's got the heavy punch
14:59and if this kid gets in trouble if trinidad kid gets in trouble he'll finish him off we'll
15:03see
15:04finidad says because i've been knocked down doesn't mean i have a weak chin many great champions have
15:09been knocked down despite that pendleton at 33 with a less than impressive 40 and 24 record
15:15a big underdog even though he's a former lightweight champ you know pendleton's last
15:19fight he fought at 148 and four or five fights over the past two years have been at 147 so he's not
15:25a stranger to this weight and he's comfortable at it you know he doesn't have to make weight here
15:29he's comfortable so is trinidad i mean trinidad has no problem trinidad feels that that pendleton
15:35will come out throwing bombs right from the outset he calls him a serious supporter because of his
15:40experience and power but talk is cheap trinidad says i'm going to explode my bomb first i don't
15:46think this will go to the distance well you can see that tito has some respect for frankie's power
15:51because when he had no respect like when he fought camacho he just ran through him ran to him every
15:55chance he got here he's being very careful and he's not taking too many chances well you've got the
16:01example of what happened a few minutes ago right in this ring for the last minute knockout so he knows
16:06it can happen to him in one punch but that's not i think the problem is is more and freddie's fighting
16:11a little a little um jinky uh how can i say it his eyes are a little bit wide open well 14 of trinidad's
16:19last 15 fights did not go the distance only camacho as you point out bobby has managed to reach the
16:25final bell with felix minute at the last five years freddie pendleton has really come into his
16:31own over the past four or five years he's actually been in the ring 12 champions we're one world
16:36champions are current two of them twice he's had a list of who's who and who he's fought and certainly
16:41lost a lot of them but he's really come into his own got a lot of confidence he's punching better
16:45he's moving better and i'll tell you what early on i'd like his chances to do very well now he's a
16:50season pro lots of experience very tough good ability hand speed aggressive dangerous but many
16:57field just not the same class as felix printed that well if his nicknames anything to go by you shouldn't
17:03be scared you should be fearless so i think at this weight though tito's been here for considerably longer
17:11period of time as comfortable as a big puncher at this weight and i think that may be the difference
17:15the strength to you and the weight but he's also 33. talent and being the championship has something
17:20to do with being a champion because you fight with such he fights with such confidence by this guy's
17:25never tasted defeat 20 seconds left for the opening round scheduled for 12 for the ibf one away
17:33championship very quiet opening up here there's the first big punch that missed and fearless
17:45in his uh ever charismatic style says hey what happened there taunting trinidad a little bit maybe get
17:50the young man out of his game
18:09all he's saying is this is his dad felix
18:12he comes forward you see what he's trying to do the thing we saw in the
18:27in the tape he steps forward you almost caught him that'll get him baby you listen to me that'll get
18:33him keep your hands up get out small don't raise your head up one more deep breath give me another
18:39two of the nose out of the mouth it's your fight it's your fight you're faster you're stronger
18:51one round of the books the proverbial feeling out round as there wasn't too much scoring going on
18:57here we go round number two yeah that was about as uneventful as we can expect
19:03trinidad basically fights every fight the same hard and in dominating fashion
19:08he feels more motivated now because now he's a target he says he's just got too much at stake
19:14he ended that first round with a wild punch that fist and fearless freddie penalty tried to taunt him
19:20but that's not going to affect trinidad
19:23the penalty was stopped by frank and randall way back in 85 once again in 88 by a guy named john montes
19:29but in the past eight years he has not been stopped and he's fought some
19:32very very incredible opposition he really has come into his own i'm really anxious to see what
19:37he can put together here tonight i've seen him be aggressive but not effectively aggressive as in
19:41the giovanni parisi fight i've seen him show tremendous heart and courage too as in the
19:46daryl tyson fight no relation to the fight for the usba junior by the way crown
19:56well he's got that flashy reputation in terms of demeanor sticking out the tongue
20:02some feel he may have been humbled by the loss to rafael ruelas but every once in a while he does that
20:07tongue thing which is a huge turnoff to judges and fans and his trainer al banani from miami he says he
20:13realizes everybody hates it it's a bad habit but he says i'm too quick to get hit i don't know about
20:20too quick to get hit but maybe too quick to get hit just while it comes out that's the midway point of
20:25round two i think the only guy who can get away with that is michael jordan yeah nobody's trying to
20:29hit him right they are but they can't get it that high
20:37so they feel freddie's a little quicker in this corner they're trying to that one to get all first
20:41use it yet and time turns that coming out of some of those big punch combinations we'll see what
20:46happens freddie ought to be getting a little bit of confidence because freddie has not come out here
20:50to wipe out the replacement he's fighting nice and calm it's not like he's up up here to eliminate
20:55him in a second so he should be getting comfortable here's a straight right hand by felix printed added
21:01and uh the gesture as if to say that's all you got for freddie pedal he said for now that's all we got for
21:09now later more to come later that argument raised in uh whether the tongue sticking out and he said
21:15you know i've never been hit yet i said when you do get hit it is not going to be anything but stars
21:20and stripes where you're going to see some stars
21:25bobby uh your instant analysis of trinidad here in the early go well you know right now trinidad is
21:30a little bit pensive he's a little bit careful maybe a little too careful but he's fighting what
21:35should be a smart fight he's got to feel out the veteran he's been in with a lot of opposition
21:3960 some odd fights he's got to be a little careful and work what he does best and this is dangerous
21:44as the challenger pennilton going for the one punch knockout there heading for the bell
21:50he's gonna win around like that you know what i mean yeah yeah open up
22:09now let's stand back he's staying back so you gotta have to make the fight a little bit more
22:14you're doing good you're trying to bait him but let's see that uh straight right hand
22:19whack and now watch the tongue yeah see but that distance is so great you couldn't you couldn't
22:25bridge that with a gun right hand i'm telling you he ain't got that much give me this deep breath
22:33keep your hands up every time he jabs jab double jab him back okay every time he jabs counter him back
22:40okay with right hands and hooks all right you get off first and if he jabs you jab back
22:46when albanani just said he ain't got that much ferdy and i just looked at each other
22:51okay it was a contest to see whose eyebrows could go up any further well the corner part of their job
22:56is to kind of pump you up and that's one way to do it round three handle it doesn't seem to be
23:01intimidated by you trinidad's speed or power but trinidad's one of those guys bobby as you have
23:08pointed out in the past he's not just a welterweight he's a big welterweight borderline junior middleweight
23:14at 154 he's 511 and he's full and he's thick he'll have actually be a full middleweight at least
23:20although watch this round you notice as we started pendleton's stepping in a little bit this time
23:25trinidad defensive on the backward a little bit
23:30now they're missing with the right again with the detente trinidad which is a mistake
23:34they're taking an awful lot to get a guy like felix turning it out of his concentration his focus
23:42his game plan
23:46we may look loosey-goosey coming in great
23:51but he's all business when the bell sounds yeah felix is all business and
23:54i'm ready trying to do whatever he can to
23:57flush him up a little bit
24:04right
24:13i'll tell you what that hook was pretty good it's a nice nice what we call rocking right hand
24:17encounter he rocked out and fired right in hit trinidad square in the button nice combination
24:24of the
24:30again the lunging right by fearless friday penulton tied up by trinidad
24:38trinidad 28-0 and 24 knockouts his ninth title defense
24:44nice left hook to the body right there
24:46a 33-year-old pendleton 40 20 and 4 with 28 knockouts
24:52his sixth world title fight former ibf lightweight champion
25:01wrestling tactics there the pendleton
25:03both fighters are fairly quick on the inside to tie the other one up they don't really want to work
25:09they see trinidad right on top of that's next so keep it clean keep it clean keep both fighters pretty
25:15pretty quick to grab on which is steel
25:18right candidate keep it clean
25:21trinidad tremendous puncher with either hand also a good boxer
25:26has been no one has mentioned to take his time getting started but a terrific finisher when he gets
25:31to take his time to take his time to take his time to take his time to take his time to take his time
25:39that combination was almost an even exchange break breaks come back
25:44final seconds of round three
25:47for the ibf welterweight title
25:52there's the foul let's go over to the fight dr bernie pacheco with
25:55the former featherweight champion aloi rojas doc all right disappointed and uh are you going to
26:01retire the other did that
26:02see if you're meant to stay at you're planning on your thing
26:05in case of ganar esta pelea as a unificar con ton johnson posteriormente retirar me
26:10all right he was planning to fight boom boom and then retire but now he's going to retire
26:14definitely uh to tell us in front that you were ahead on the cards did you expect that knock
26:20out so resoundingly this dude te sorprendió el marco mire exactamente este tu indicaciones
26:45donde se pone la vida all right i'm i have to cut him off he he is sorry that he lost but he couldn't
26:52help it all right the birdie so in a stunning upset stunning because one judge didn't have him
26:57winning a single round the other two out of behind by comfortable margins will fredo vasquez
27:03stopping eloy rojas in the 11th round for the wba featherweight championship here we are in the ibf
27:09runaway championship by round four so i thought ross was way ahead myself but you know ten or ten
27:15and a half rounds does not a fight make as we discover penelins still standing in front of
27:21trinidad a dangerous strategy
27:30trinidad's a worker he'll put punches together
27:34oh that was south oh yeah keep it up you're holding him down okay keep him up richard steel does the
27:41cautioning
27:53don't hold it looking to take to the body of one swing and a miss with a left hook by a fearless
27:58friday penalty that's the second warning for low blows given by richard steel to felix trinidad
28:03couple of those hooks just going a little south of the border usually trinidad makes his opponent
28:07pay when they miss we'll see what happens here the action heating up a little bit from before i left
28:12and we're just kind of patsy when i left they're down to business now they had a very good counterpunch
28:18bobby who won the last round i was going the last round was also won by trinidad but again the margins
28:23are very very slim he's not winning by a lot what we saw in the last round 30
28:26pendleton started to come forward as he's doing now starting to come forward trinidad not necessarily
28:31pressing issue all the time round four continues a left hook there by
28:37pendleton that he's ready keep him up let's fly with a straight right head
28:40pendleton opening things up here a bit he's taking his chances this pedal
28:45he's coming straight forward pouring in on felix trinidad freddy's done some nice work
28:53on speed and counter just like that right hand steve beautiful straight right by freddy peddleton
29:01freddy throwing everything he's got on those punches he's trying to hit a home run he tagged it with
29:06another right but unfortunately for peddleton trinidad was moving backwards
29:10well i know he got tito's attention that i'm sure
29:19yeah all of a sudden trinidad looking a lot more intense than before
29:27combination by trinidad and a nice punch underneath even though it was low it was low
29:33richard steel did not see it
29:34but i haven't seen any really clean blows well that was a body shot and i think he came down a
29:48little bit not much but that's the first indication
29:55a little bit of pressure
30:03a little bit more
30:09and
30:13yeah
30:15He said you're ahead in every round,
30:27but now he's going to come out looking for you.
30:29He's going to look for that body blow,
30:30come right on top when he comes in with a body blow.
30:33Well, here you see a low blow, too.
30:35You know, he just takes him and digs him up
30:37and just threw it south.
30:39Brady pulled his head down, but he just let it go,
30:41and it went loud.
30:43Yeah, he did.
30:43But Pendlin comes back fighting.
30:44I mean, you know, this was a good round,
30:46the best round for Pendlin,
30:47because he's trying so hard to land that right hand,
30:49and he did a couple of times.
30:51He caught Chito's attention, I'll say that.
30:53A little more sense of urgency in that Trinidad corner
30:55as we head into round number five.
30:58Pendlin's corner, yelling at him to go to the body
31:00and counterpunch between rounds.
31:03Round four was Pendlin's best round yet.
31:07You know, he landed some really big bombs there.
31:09I gave him an even round.
31:10I did, too.
31:11Right north toward the end,
31:12Chito started to take over the round,
31:14and let's see what happens now as round five starts.
31:17Get a little taunting there by Pendlin is Trinidad
31:20with a little head fake,
31:22a little stutter step,
31:23but he hasn't thrown.
31:25He's waiting.
31:26There it is.
31:27A lunging straight right by Trinidad.
31:30He tries to go right over the jab if he can.
31:33Trinidad's got trigger-fast reflexes,
31:35which is what all great fighters have to have.
31:37I mean, when he's in front of you, it's like a spring.
31:40Oh, nice uppercut.
31:41The right uppercut by Trinidad, twisting.
31:46Watch a hit.
31:48Watch a hit.
31:49Watch a steal.
31:50There's a quantity cut.
31:51No headbutts here.
31:52No technicalities.
31:55Trinidad, very confident.
31:57Freddy Pencil pulls away on that right hand very well.
31:59He, like, rolls with that punch, minimizes the power.
32:02He's got to stand at that range.
32:04Trinidad bobbing and waving,
32:06looking for the opening.
32:07Very patient.
32:08Bobby, that punch is getting closer and closer.
32:10Oh, here he goes.
32:12Penal looks down.
32:13What a shot.
32:14Right before Penalton went down,
32:15he went back to the corner.
32:16Is it something was wrong?
32:18He shook his head up.
32:19That hit would have lived in.
32:20He's not getting up.
32:21He looked over the corner.
32:22He goes down, and it's over.
32:24It's over here in round five.
32:26Felix Trinidad retains his title.
32:29Another questionable finish.
32:30It's a strange finish.
32:31What was that?
32:32He looked at the corner.
32:33He walked it over to the corner,
32:35looking almost directly at us,
32:36because where his corner is here.
32:37And he shook his head no.
32:38He had a distressed look on his face.
32:40And he shook his head no.
32:41And I went to talk to myself.
32:43And he hit one body shot, hit him.
32:45He must have, you know,
32:46a broken rib or some kind of pain to him,
32:48because I didn't see any damage to him
32:50that occasion.
32:52Prior to this, no, I didn't see it.
32:55What a powerful left hook
32:57to the body of Freddy Penalton.
32:59I can't wait until you get to talk to him
33:00to find out.
33:01I hope we get to talk to Penalton,
33:03because that requires an explanation.
33:06Let's see if we can see anything, Bobby,
33:08in a replay that we didn't see here
33:09with the naked eye,
33:11because it sure went by me.
33:14Yeah.
33:17Let's take the first look at it
33:18and see if we can see what Bobby was talking about
33:20when he was just looking.
33:21Now, listen, he's already in the corner,
33:25and there's the hook underneath.
33:26That's not enough to drop.
33:27No, that's not enough to keep him down for 10.
33:29I'm not sure.
33:29Something else had to be wrong.
33:30I don't know what, though.
33:31Well, if we had your tape roll back further
33:33at the angle we saw the fight at,
33:35he just went back to the corner,
33:36and he looked his strength.
33:37Where he hit him is right at the bottom
33:39of the rib cage there.
33:40If he has a cracked rib there, it hurts.
33:41But if it's true, what you saw,
33:44if it's true when he came through here
33:45and looked at his corner,
33:46he must have already been hurt.
33:47I saw something in his eyes in the last round.
33:49It almost looked Bobby.
33:50But I saw something in his eyes in the last round.
33:53Well, watch it.
33:53See, he's looking away,
33:54and he's shaking his head no,
33:56like something's wrong.
33:57And he sits there, and he gets hit.
33:58It was a very clean left hook,
34:00but you can see him shaking his head
34:01toward his corner.
34:02And did it look like he was going down
34:04even before the punch?
34:05Yeah, it looked like the very next thing
34:06that was thrown he was going to go down with.
34:08That's what it looked like.
34:09I'm confused.
34:12So, a bizarre ending here
34:14in the fifth round.
34:15A lot of chatter going on
34:18in that Trinidad corner
34:19as he retains his IBF
34:22waterway championship.
34:23And he goes to 29-0
34:25with 25 knockouts.
34:2723-year-old Felix Trinidad
34:29retaining a title he has now held
34:31for nearly three years.
34:33Ninth successful defense of the crown.
34:36His unblemished record swelling to 29-0.
34:39And it ends a five-fight winning streak
34:41for Freddie Pendleton.
34:42He now drops to 40-21-4.
34:44Bernadette continues to mow him down.
34:49And now boxing fans,
34:50those who have followed his meteoric rhymes,
34:53wait and see what his next move will be.
34:55Come on real sudden.
34:56Ah, come on real quick.
34:58Just like that.
34:59His eyes are fine.
35:00Well, what's next?
35:04Will he take on two-time world champion
35:05Frankie Randall,
35:06or will he seek to unify the 1-0-8 title
35:08against opposition like Cornel Whitaker
35:10or Ike Forte?
35:13He really wants Cornel Whitaker,
35:23and he's saluting
35:23his friends and family back in Puerto Rico.
35:27Let's get the official time
35:30from our ring announcer,
35:31Jimmy Lennon Jr.
35:32Ladies and gentlemen,
35:37we have the time of one minute,
35:3930 seconds,
35:40and round number five.
35:43Our referee in charge,
35:44Richard Steele,
35:45reaches the count of ten.
35:47He's the winner by way of knockout.
35:50Still undefeated,
35:51and still the IBF
35:53the welterweight champion
35:55of the world,
35:56Felix,
35:57Vito Trinidad!
36:04Vito Trinidad!
36:12So there you have it,
36:14the announcement
36:14of Felix Tito Trinidad
36:16retaining his IBF welterweight championship.
36:19He could also wind up
36:21fighting the winner
36:22of Julio Cesar Chavez
36:23and Oscar De La Hoya.
36:24Anything is possible.
36:25There are so many
36:26possibilities
36:28out there
36:29for Felix Trinidad.
36:37Let's take a look
36:37at some intriguing action
36:39here earlier
36:39in the round here.
36:40Bobby, take a look.
36:41Watch Middleton's face.
36:43This is way before
36:45the end of the fight.
36:47Yeah, you could see him
36:47looking and just shaking his head,
36:48he said, no, I'm not sure
36:49what that could possibly be.
36:55This is way before
36:56the knockout.
36:56Keep in mind,
36:57but I overheard something
36:58in his corner, Steve,
36:58where somebody asked him a question.
36:59He said, did it come on all of a sudden?
37:00He said, very sudden.
37:02So I'm assuming maybe
37:02something that hurt
37:03in his body
37:04that just started being
37:05really painful.
37:06He was wincing,
37:07and he, as mentioned,
37:08his backward motion,
37:09he was going down
37:10even before the punch.
37:12It was a solid punch,
37:13but perhaps not
37:14the kind of punch
37:15that would end a fight,
37:16Bobby, as you pointed out.
37:18It just seemed
37:19that something was wrong
37:19before he got hit,
37:21and I don't know that,
37:22you know,
37:23we're going to find out
37:24unless we talk to him.
37:26And hopefully,
37:26that is being arranged
37:28as we speak
37:29between the White Doctor
37:30and the Pendleton camp.
37:33He looked over to the corner
37:34and then he went down.
37:35He was letting him know
37:36something was wrong.
37:41The fight doctor,
37:42Ferdi Pacheco,
37:43standing by with the champion.
37:48Congratulations.
37:49Eso fue un golpe al riñón.
37:52Was that a kidney punch?
37:53Si, bueno, si,
37:53ese golpe fue un golpe al riñón.
37:55Un chiquilla.
37:56Ese golpe, yo lo pego muy fuerte.
37:58Y así, yo, pude colocar ese golpe
37:59y nuevamente otra victoria.
38:00He said,
38:01that's more to the liver,
38:02and it's very hard.
38:03He practices that a lot
38:04you think that fue el única cosa
38:06porque pareció que sacudió su cabeza.
38:09He looked like he shook his head.
38:10Was that the only reason
38:10he went down?
38:12No, bueno.
38:12Yo lo había castigado
38:13varios golpes certeros.
38:15¿Verdad eso?
38:15Y le fueron haciendo este,
38:17efecto,
38:18daño durante toda la pelea.
38:20Y con ese ganchiquilla último fue...
38:22That was an accumulation
38:23of punches
38:23that went...
38:24We got Al,
38:25but I understand he here,
38:27and I think,
38:28what was he...
38:29What was he telling you?
38:30What was Penalist doing?
38:31What was wrong with him?
38:32He never told me
38:33he was hurt at all
38:34during the fight.
38:35He looked at me.
38:36I thought he got hit
38:37with a good shot
38:37the round before.
38:38A couple of good shots.
38:40And when he...
38:40He just...
38:41I didn't see him
38:42get it with a punch,
38:42and he looked at me
38:43in the corner
38:43and put his hands up
38:45and went on against the ropes
38:46and hit him with a tremendous body shot.
38:48Why won't Freddy talk to him?
38:49He just says he's dizzy.
38:51We've got him in the back.
38:52I want to go back there
38:53and see what's wrong.
38:54He just got real dizzy.
38:55He said he couldn't focus.
38:56He couldn't see.
38:57And I know he got hit
38:59with a good shot
38:59the earlier round,
39:01but he was clear in a corner
39:02when I sent him out clear.
39:04Maybe the heat?
39:05I don't know what it is, Freddy.
39:06All right.
39:08Trinidad's future is golden.
39:10Where...
39:11Give us some pass.
39:12Let me say that Trinidad
39:13is number one in the world.
39:14He's the best welterweight
39:15in the world,
39:16bar none.
39:17In fact,
39:17what we want to do
39:18is offer Whitaker
39:19$4 million to fight Trinidad,
39:21and we don't want no options.
39:22I would propose a deal
39:23to fight Trinidad,
39:25but I mean Whitaker,
39:25but they wanted me
39:26to give three options on Whitaker.
39:28I'm going to tell the Duvers
39:29and HBO,
39:30we're ready to fight Whitaker,
39:32and I will give the $4 million
39:34and don't want no options.
39:36We want to take off.
39:37We are ready right now,
39:38so let's stop jiving
39:39and let's put it together.
39:40And what they've been doing
39:41is playing the game,
39:42as we call it in the ghetto,
39:44throwing the rock
39:44and hiding your hand.
39:46Where would that fight take place?
39:47So it'll be Showtime,
39:48it'll be HBO.
39:49Isn't that a problem?
39:50No, it's not a problem.
39:51It's not a problem.
39:51We had knocked him out on HBO.
39:53You know what I mean?
39:53Quit getting out the thing.
39:54We don't want no options
39:56and no futures.
39:57We just go right into HBO.
39:58They say they got a contract.
39:59We'll fight him there,
40:00knock him out there,
40:01and then come on back to Showtime.
40:02But they want to get him
40:03and hold him
40:04so they can have him in bondage
40:06for a whole year
40:07and then say that Don King
40:09is the only one that wants options.
40:10But right now,
40:11I don't want no options,
40:12no futures.
40:13All we want to do
40:14is to knock out Whitaker.
40:16So Whitaker, be a man
40:17and come on out there and fight.
40:18Don't let him hide.
40:19Don't you hide behind these
40:21because you've been
40:21too good of a champion.
40:22So come on out
40:23and make your promoters
40:25make the fight
40:26so we can knock you out.
40:27That's definitely a period
40:29at the end of that sentence.
40:30So I'm going to go to Steve
40:31at ringside
40:32and then we're going to come back
40:32with Don and talk some more.
40:35All right.
40:36Thank you very much,
40:37Bernie, back here
40:38with Bobby Chez.
40:39Just for the record,
40:40Trinidad was ahead
40:41on all three judges' scorecards,
40:4340, 36, 39, 37,
40:4539 to 37.
40:47He wins by KO,
40:48130 of the fifth round.
40:50And until the knockdown,
40:51Pendleton was living up
40:53to his nickname to some extent,
40:54the nickname of Fearless.
40:55But Trinidad,
40:56he's just so quick
40:57and so powerful.
41:00I think the power was the key.
41:02I think the fact that he hits real hard.
41:04You know,
41:04Freddie's moving up to 147
41:06where he has fought before
41:07but not really maintain that weight,
41:09maintain boxing men
41:10that hit that hard
41:11that are coming down from 54
41:12to 150 and 160 even.
41:14So I think that was the difference,
41:15that power.
41:16Well, you heard the offer
41:16put on the plate there.
41:17Four million for Whitaker.
41:18What do you think?
41:19Trinidad versus
41:20Sweet Pea?
41:21It's a great fight.
41:22You know,
41:22I'm a big Pernell Sweet Pea Whitaker fan.
41:25I'm also now becoming a fan of Trinidad,
41:26having seen him so many times.
41:28It's a great fight
41:28and one I'd pay to see.
41:29How about that other fight?
41:31What a stunner.
41:32Well, Fredo Vasquez
41:33doing the job.
41:35What a great job.
41:36Smaller man moving up,
41:37maintaining big power
41:39with those little hands,
41:40that small weight,
41:41taking the champion down
41:42in the late rounds,
41:43in the championship rounds.
41:44What a terrific job.
41:45Very exciting night here
41:46in Las Vegas.
41:47Well, here on Showtime
41:48Championship Boxing,
41:49Time now to present
41:50our Fighter of the Night Award.

42:03and Steve Weiss of the Miami Herald.
42:06And our judges have selected,

42:28and WBC Productions.
42:31Well, earlier tonight,
42:32we discussed that the Mike Tyson-Bruce
42:34Seldon Heavyweight Championship fight
42:35is on once again.
42:37After months of legal maneuvering,
42:38it has been resolved.
42:40At Lennox Lewis,
42:40the number one WBC contender,
42:43will step aside
42:43so WBC champion Tyson
42:46can fight WBA champion Seldon.
42:49And another reminder,
42:51this World Heavyweight Championship
42:52will be broadcast live on pay-per-view
42:54on Saturday, July 13th.
42:57For more on that upcoming fight,
42:59let's go back to the fight,
43:00Dr. Ferdie Pacheco.
43:01Before we get into this beautiful future
43:03that you have planned for the summer,
43:05let's talk a moment about Vasquez
43:06and his brilliant comeback.
43:08That was a sensational fight, Ferdie.
43:10That's what fight fans want.
43:11They salivate at seeing a young man
43:13come out there and fight.
43:15Now, you know,
43:15this is the first time in history
43:16that a fighter's won three championship belts
43:18in the same organization in the WBA.
43:21And Wilfred Ovesquez was proud this evening.
43:23He did the sport proud.
43:25He did WBA proud.
43:26He was tremendous.
43:27It was a sensational fighter
43:29with a never-say-die attitude.
43:31And I thought he was tremendous
43:32this evening on Showtime.
43:33What an opening.
43:34All right, let's go to June.
43:35It seems like we've got two good fights in June.
43:38Yes, we do.
43:38We had a, after you say,
43:40that they had a good fight with Trinidad.
43:41And Trinidad, as you know,
43:42we have challenged Whitaker.
43:43Now, we hope that Whitaker
43:44will come on in
43:45and go out like a man
43:46like he came in
43:47and fight Trinidad.
43:49And I hope it don't be
43:50no kind of political,
43:52bureaucratic, bureaucratic news.
43:53You know that will be,
43:54but let's get on to June.
43:55Yes, yes.
43:55But in June,
43:56we got a sensational fight in June.
43:58We have Terry Norris.
44:01Terrible Terry Norris
44:02is going for the
44:03undisputed championship
44:04against Julio Cesar Vasquez.
44:06That will be in Newcastle, England.
44:09Also, we have fabulous Frankie Lyle
44:11taking on Tim Littles
44:12and Prince Hamid.
44:14Nassim Hamid
44:14will make his introduction
44:16to American television
44:17when he fights
44:18for the WBO championship
44:20on Showtime
44:21on the 8th of June
44:24in Newcastle.
44:25It's going to be
44:25a sensational fight.
44:27All right,
44:27then we hang around
44:28Piccadilly Square
44:28and see where we can pick up
44:30some fish and chips
44:31until the end of June.
44:32And then who's fighting
44:33at the end of June?
44:34Well, at the end of June
44:35and coming up to
44:36the 28th or the 29th,
44:37we got,
44:38we're teeter-tottering
44:39because we got so much
44:40sparkling entertainment
44:41that we want to choose from them,
44:42but we're going into
44:43the firecracker month
44:44and that's in July,
44:45you know,
44:46and a firecracker we have
44:47with Nigel Benn
44:48and Stevie Collins
44:49on June the 6th.
44:51So we'll be working
44:51on that fight in England
44:53also with Frank Warren,
44:54my partner in England,
44:55and we're going to put
44:56a star-studded card
44:57on with that card.
44:58So we got a lot of fights
45:00in store
45:00and we got a lot of
45:01what we're going to do
45:03with the 29th of June
45:04and then with the 13th,
45:06which you're going
45:06to talk about now.
45:07Well, what we're going
45:08to talk about is,
45:09all you've been talking
45:09about is boxing.
45:10That's so simple.
45:11One guy gets in with one guy
45:12and we get a winner.
45:13What you just went through
45:14is complicated.
45:15Try to explain
45:16in as few words as you can
45:17what the hell
45:17you just went through
45:18to try to make Tyson
45:19with Lennox Lewis.
45:20What was that all about?
45:22Well, that was a
45:22very complex negotiation.
45:24It was a negotiation
45:25in good faith,
45:26but you had to do,
45:26you had to do like,
45:28the negotiation
45:30from a reverse position
45:32because we knew
45:33that HBO had contracts
45:34on Lennox Lewis
45:36and that he could not
45:37make a fight
45:38and it was like
45:38throwing a rock
45:39and hiding your hand
45:40saying they didn't have it
45:41and in two words
45:42he said no,
45:43but at the same time
45:44the man had
45:44the broadcast rights
45:45and he wouldn't
45:45let us have them.
45:46No matter what we offered them,
45:48they couldn't accept it.
45:49So at the end of the day
45:50when the guys found out
45:51in good faith
45:51that they couldn't
45:52really make a deal,
45:53then we worked all night
45:55and then we made a deal
45:56in good faith
45:56with Gino Duper
45:57and Pat English,
45:58Bob Earth and myself
45:59and they had to run
46:00to the phones
46:00and make the calls.
46:02But we got it done.
46:03We overcame.
46:04We overcame something
46:05that was insurmountable
46:06and the impediments
46:07and obstacles
46:07was far-reaching.
46:09But Tyson will be fighting
46:10Bruce Seldon
46:12on July 13th
46:14at the MGM Grand
46:15here in Las Vegas
46:16and Tyson by far
46:17is the best heavyweight ever.
46:19But in actuality,
46:19all you did was
46:20postpone the negotiations again.
46:22They got to catch you again
46:23in September
46:23and try to make
46:24Lennox Lewis
46:25and the same set
46:26of circumstances
46:27will make that
46:27almost impossible to make.
46:29Tyson versus Lennox Lewis
46:30in September.
46:31Well, hopefully,
46:32hopefully,
46:33Riddick Bowe
46:34will remove that problem.
46:36You know what I mean?
46:36So I think that Bowe
46:38and Lennox Lewis,
46:39this is what we have
46:40relegated our competition
46:42to our farm team now.
46:43And so the farm team
46:44is now going in AAA
46:46so they can send them
46:46to the majors.
46:47We're the majors, Ferdy.
46:49Are you saying
46:49Lennox Lewis is going
46:50to be crazy enough
46:51to get in there with Bowe?
46:52Oh, absolutely.
46:53You know what I mean?
46:53It's to know
46:54what are you doing?
46:55You've got Frank Maloney,
46:56don't forget, you know?
46:57And so they're going
46:58to be able to put
46:59that show together
46:59and when Lennox Lewis
47:01fights Riddick Bowe,
47:02the problem is gone
47:03because if we fought
47:04Lennox Lewis now,
47:05he was like tainted good.
47:06He was diminished,
47:07so to speak,
47:08because I thought
47:09that Mercer beat him,
47:10in my opinion,
47:11at Madison Square Garden.
47:13However, the judges
47:14saw differently
47:14and they gave it
47:15to Lennox Lewis
47:15and said we couldn't
47:16afford to put Lennox Lewis
47:17in with Tyson
47:18under those type of conditions.
47:20So now if Lennox Lewis
47:21is fortunate enough
47:22to beat Riddick Bowe,
47:22he takes the image
47:24and re-does it.
47:25You know,
47:25so he's a renewed
47:26Lennox Lewis
47:26and we're ready to fight him
47:28right then and there.
47:29But if he loses,
47:30he's out.
47:31Hey, if you've got an aspirin,
47:32you've got a headache
47:32from all of it.
47:33Let me go back to Steve
47:35who's the promised guy.
47:36Yes,
47:36and the greatest announcer
47:38is Steve
47:38at ring tie with Bobby Chess.
47:40All right,
47:41thank you,
47:41Aferti.
47:41You said that
47:42exactly as I wrote it for you
47:43and back here
47:44with Bobby,
47:45politics and legalities aside,
47:47your thoughts
47:47on Tyson versus Seldon.
47:49Well,
47:49you know,
47:50Bruce Seldon's really
47:51come into his own
47:51now boxing.
47:52Diego Rosario,
47:52a former stablemate of mine,
47:54we boxed together
47:55in the gym
47:56when I was 11,
47:5612,
47:5713 years old
47:57and 105 pounds
47:58of all things
47:59a lifetime and a half ago.
48:00I never did see
48:01any of your baby pictures.
48:02Yeah,
48:02I didn't either.
48:03But Diego's a great boxer
48:04and the key
48:05with Diego's left hand.
48:06Bruce Seldon
48:07has turned out
48:07to be one fine boxer,
48:09tremendous left hand.
48:10The question marks
48:11are around his chin.
48:12Can Mike Tyson
48:13just go through him
48:14or has Bruce,
48:15can Bruce rise to the occasion?
48:16Can he take some
48:17of those big bombs
48:17and unload his own?
48:18So that's real questionable
48:20right now.
48:21Everybody's speaking.
48:22All right,
48:23Bobby,
48:23on that note,
48:23let's take one final look
48:24at tonight's results
48:26in our first fight
48:27of fight
48:28being dominated
48:28by Eloy Rojas.
48:30Well,
48:30he has knocked out
48:31the champion
48:31at 121 of round 11
48:33to win the WBA
48:33featherweight title
48:34and at our main event,
48:36Felix Trinidad,
48:37one of the best
48:38pound-for-pound fighters
48:38in the world,
48:39knocked out Freddie Pendleton
48:40at 130 of round five
48:41to retain the IVF
48:42welterweight crown.
48:44We're told
48:44between rounds
48:47there really wasn't
48:48much being said
48:49between trainer
48:49Alvinati
48:50and Freddie Pendleton.
48:51They just couldn't figure out
48:52if there was anything wrong
48:53with Pendleton
48:54as we later discovered
48:55there was.
