00:00You
00:30It's showtime
00:52Kendall
00:54He just might be the type of fighter
01:13Who has superstar pretension
01:14Showbox, the new generation
01:18Few places green boxing
01:25Like Las Vegas, Nevada
01:26Where tonight
01:27We come to you with another
01:28Duel in the desert
01:29On the latest edition
01:30Of Showbox, the new generation
01:33From downtown Las Vegas
01:38We're at the Texas Nation
01:39Gambling Hall and Hotel
01:40With a showcase of both
01:42The new and the familiar
01:43First, a pair of junior middleweights
01:45Make their Showbox debuts
01:47As Jermell Charlo
01:48Puts his perfect 15-0 mark
01:50On the line
01:51Against Francisco Santana
01:53Then a couple of Showbox
01:55Returnees get together
01:56As undefeated Sharif Bogaret
01:58Meets unbeaten Francisco Contreras
02:00In what should be
02:01An exciting lightweight battle
02:03Hello again everyone
02:08I'm Kurt Menefee
02:09Thank you so much for joining us
02:11And you cannot ask for
02:12A more quintessential
02:13Showbox matchup
02:14Than our main event tonight
02:15Two unbeaten fighters
02:17Both willing to put
02:18All the accolades
02:19That come along with that
02:20On the line
02:20Fighting his toughest opponent
02:22Yet in the quest
02:23To try and turn from prospect
02:25To true contender
02:27And so Steve Farhood
02:28For both Sharif Bogaret
02:29And Francisco Contreras
02:30This night is one
02:32That's really a classic case
02:33Of high risk, high reward
02:35Indeed, Kurt
02:36Of all the main events
02:37On Showbox this year
02:38This is the one
02:38I'm looking forward to the most
02:40The excitement
02:41Should be provided by Bogaret
02:43Because that's just the way he fights
02:44But the drama
02:45I'm hoping
02:46Will be provided by Contreras
02:47Because he's the puncher
02:49And if his power surfaces
02:51This one could be really special
02:52In about one hour
02:56Sharif Bogaret turns 23
02:58Showtime's birthday gift
03:00The opportunity to prove
03:01He's on his way
03:02To contendership
03:03At lightweight
03:04Or better yet
03:04A world title
03:05And we're happy to give
03:06Because Bogaret is quick
03:08Spunky
03:08Busy
03:09And full of heart
03:10If he can add
03:11Punching power
03:12The lion just might come
03:13To rule the 135 pound jungle
03:15Tomorrow Sharif
03:16You can blow out the candles
03:18Tonight
03:19Try and blow out
03:20Francisco Contreras
03:21Is Francisco Contreras
03:25A big puncher
03:26Or just a big tease
03:2720 months ago
03:28Contreras scored
03:29A sensational
03:29First round KO
03:30In his Showbox debut
03:32Two fights later
03:33He was booed
03:34During a safety first win
03:35On points
03:36Tonight
03:37Contreras is in
03:37With a hungry lion
03:38Bogaret represents
03:39A big step up in class
03:41In fact
03:41The combined record
03:42Of Contreras' opponents
03:43Under 500
03:44What do you have
03:46Francisco Contreras
03:47It's time to eat
03:48Or be eaten
03:49And so now
03:52We bring in
03:52Former light heavyweight
03:53Champion of the world
03:54Current heavyweight contender
03:55The great Antonio Tarver
03:56And Antonio
03:57We took
03:59Sharif Bogaret's last fight
04:01And it was right here
04:02On Showbox
04:02Back in May
04:03It was a tough battle
04:04It went the distance
04:05It got cut above both eyes
04:07Won a very very close decision
04:09In the end
04:10In ten rounds
04:11Usually when a fighter
04:12Is in a battle like that
04:13He takes a step back
04:13Before his next fight
04:14But instead tonight
04:15He comes in against
04:16Just as tough an opponent
04:17Yeah and in boxing
04:18You're only as good
04:19As your last fight
04:20That's why
04:21I questioned
04:22This matchup tonight
04:23He's in very very tough
04:25With Francisco Contreras
04:26And in a fight
04:27That he has to look good
04:28And not only win
04:30He may have a hard time
04:31Doing either or
04:33So sometimes
04:34It's important for a fighter
04:35To step back
04:36In order to go forward
04:37We'll see if he's ready
04:38And prepared
04:39To win tonight
04:40All right
04:40That's coming up
04:41Still later on
04:42This evening
04:43In our main event
04:43But up first
04:44It's the co-feature
04:45Of the evening
04:46Undefeated Jermel Charlo
04:48Taking on
04:48Francisco Santana
04:50In a scheduled
04:51Eight-round
04:52Junior middleweight
04:53Bout
04:5321-year-old
04:58Jermel Charlo
04:59Is a long
04:59Tall Texan
05:00Who turned pro
05:01At the age of 17
05:02He's been working
05:03With prominent trainer
05:04Ronnie Shields
05:05Since his debut
05:05And built his record
05:06On mostly entry-level
05:08Opposition in Texas
05:09Charlo moves well
05:10In the ring though
05:11But you have to
05:12Remind him every now
05:13And then
05:13Because he's a tactical
05:14Fighter
05:14Not to get too cautious
05:15A very busy boxer
05:17In his first three years
05:18A couple of cancellations
05:19Have slowed his pace
05:20This is only his second
05:21Fight this year
05:22And he comes into it
05:23With a record of 15-0
05:25With seven knockouts
05:26Steve
05:27Take us behind those numbers
05:28Well Kurt
05:29Slow Charlo
05:30Charlo's been moved
05:31At a leisurely pace
05:33His most recent bout
05:34A sixth rounder
05:35And he's never faced
05:36An opponent
05:36With more than 16 fights
05:38Then again
05:38He's only 21 years old
05:40Who's that?
05:41Quality of opposition
05:42This is all you need to know
05:44I'm aware of a lot of fighters
05:45And I don't recognize
05:46Any of the victims
05:47On Charlo's record
05:48And needs more pop
05:49Charlo's plenty fast enough
05:51But has his KO percentage
05:53In the case
05:53He's not yet much
05:54Of a puncher
05:55His right hand is strong
05:56He needs to work
05:57On his left hook
05:58Well tonight
05:59He'll face a guy
06:00Who says he can adapt
06:00To any style
06:01Francisco Santana
06:03He started boxing
06:04At age 9
06:05Catching a junior
06:06Olympic bronze medal
06:07Along the way
06:07At 16
06:09He stopped competing
06:09And began honing
06:10His professional style
06:11In the gym
06:12Before turning pro
06:13At 19
06:14He's an aggressive
06:15Somewhat unorthodox fighter
06:16With a good left hook
06:17But has never been
06:18Beyond six rounds
06:20Santana returned
06:21To the ring earlier
06:21This year
06:22After a 15 month hiatus
06:23Winning both his fights
06:25Most recently in May
06:26He steps into the ring tonight
06:28With an overall mark
06:29Of 12 wins
06:30Two losses
06:30And one draw
06:31What's behind those numbers
06:33Steve?
06:33Well mixed results
06:35Kurt
06:35Santana lost
06:36By split decision
06:37To prospect
06:38Kareem Mayfield
06:39Who was 5-0-1
06:40At the time
06:41And Santana got stopped
06:42In the rematch
06:43Four months ago
06:44Santana drew
06:45With another unbeaten
06:46Prospect Julian Williams
06:47Choppy skets
06:48Santana should have
06:50More than 15 fights
06:51The holes
06:52Only two bouts in 08
06:53No action at all
06:54In 2010
06:55In facing winners
06:57Santana's been matched tough
06:58The combined record
06:59Of his five
07:00Most recent opponents
07:01Is 39
07:024 and 3

09:24At all times
09:25Above all
09:25Protect yourselves
09:26at all times let's go
09:27as we look at the tail of the tape with these two one thing to think about
09:34Santana comes in at 154 but he says he's best at welterweight
09:38and will be going down to 147 so tonight advantage charlotte
09:42and the rules tonight they're the abc rules no standing eight no three knockdown
09:49only the referee can stop the fight can't be saved by the bell in any round
09:52the accidental foul or if the fight is stopped before the end of four
09:55no decision after that we go to the cards
09:57and so we thank you for joining us on show box to wrap up a good sports friday
10:03brewers beat the arizona diamondbacks in extra innings st louis
10:07beat philadelphia won nothing both those teams advanced to the national league
10:10championship series and now we've got jermel charlo and francisco
10:14santana opening up our card here from las vegas
10:17and we can already see the two keys to this fight
10:29santana pressure pressure pressure and charlo jab jab jab
10:33oh this will be an interesting style matchup from the beginning
10:37santana told us he is notorious slow starter
10:40while charlo wants to get more busy tonight
10:42and the amateur experience actually very similar both guys turned pro very young
10:46so their amateur experience was pretty much
10:48only the junior olympics not against the big boys of the amateur game
10:52and pro experience santana has been a pro a little bit longer
10:56but charlo's four more rounds
10:58and uh santana hasn't been all that busy
11:01well the two come out trying to
11:06figure each other out here measure their way through this first round
11:11santana being more aggressive as charlo on the run but charlo fighting right back
11:19maybe moving backwards but he's still throwing punches along the along the way
11:25charlo handlers in the fighters meeting felt that he works better when he's under pressure
11:30because he reacts and then the natural fighter comes out of him
11:33so we'll see if he can uh stop this pressure by santana
11:37santana staying in close tying up charlo
11:42stop stop stop let him go
11:45and the uh the pressure and the punching of santana
11:48it's actually a double-edged sword because it's his only way to win
11:51but charlo likes to counter as antonio indicated
11:54and that's probably charlo's best bet
11:56so who imposes his will may be uh may determine who the winner is
12:00this is one of those fights where charlo simply trying to keep his record unbeaten
12:10and stay perfect and continue moving up the ladder
12:13while santana is just trying to keep his career intact
12:16and you see uh charlo coming with a very crisp jab and you see him working off the jab with the hook which he feels is his best punch the jab it can dictate and control the fight defensively as well as offensively
12:30well santana kept the jab and the straight left working trying to keep some distance but takes a couple of punches while backed up against the rope from santana
12:37santana keeps his guard very high antonio does that make it more difficult to jab successfully
12:45well i mean not necessarily because sometimes you have to fight tall
12:48but in this match you know he's pretty much the same size he looks like he's lower than his opponent
12:53but uh no i'm not standing tall i don't i don't believe so you can throw a jab from many angles
12:58ask me let him go well santana kept up the pressure in the first round charlo seemed to answer it
13:03and we're into round one of the scheduled eight round bout
13:07what do you think their strategy was for this evening you don't have to think just ask starting with charlo
13:16get him bagging up that's the main thing get him bagging up going going backwards and applying more
13:21pressure to him i know they think that i'm moving around a lot so you know i have a plan a a plan b just
13:26like every other fighter does so you know my my strategy is just going to bag him up and and um lay him out
13:32i've been in tough fights before i've been in many many tough fights before i've fought against
13:40undefeated fighters who i've been the underdog and once again tonight i'm i'm an underdog but uh so i
13:46know what that's like and i've been in deep waters and i know how to fight through it and i think that's
13:52going to play back there santana talked about being a young fighter being an underdog before he has
14:05been his last couple of fights as he's coming to this one the underdog and santana wasn't always one
14:11he was one of those young prospects won what 12 of his first 13 fights got ko'd in the 14th and didn't
14:16really know what to do with his career after that actually quit boxing for about 15 months before coming
14:21back at the beginning of this year
14:35the punch santana needs to land is his left hook he's got a really nice left hook but he throws it
14:42short he throws it sweet he's got to be close to throw it and right now he's not applying enough
14:46pressure to get close no it looks like this is going to be a fight where he's going to have to
14:51apply pressure and make the fight so to speak yeah that's definitely that's definitely excuse me
14:55i didn't mean to cut you off that's definitely the style that he's going to need but it seems like
14:58now he's a little bit tight you know he's throwing his punches but he doesn't seem to have his balance
15:03he's like he's letting his hand go but let's see his direction stop stop stop stop stop stop
15:08charlo seems to be more comfortable to sit back and wait for uh
15:12uh sanchez to come to him or santana pardon me
15:24good combination thrown by charlo there
15:26for six foot junior middleweight charlo moves really nicely he's got quick hands and quick
15:33feet very good lateral movement both sides takes a shot in the ribs but now pressed up against the
15:40ropes here santana tries to apply the pressure we saw him come out within the opening round
15:46yeah charlo's been caught right around the ropes two three times already and that's something he has to
15:50stay away from because he was totally square and easy to hit when he was against the ropes yeah that's
15:55one thing a young fighter need to learn in the gym you know you don't go back straight stand straight up
16:00when your back is being swept that's a good time to get your knees up under you and bend so you'll
16:05have leverage if you're able to counter the guy that's coming forward stop stop stop 20 weeks breaks
16:11him up again final minute of the second round
16:16santana trying to work the body but takes a couple of blows to the head while doing so
16:26this has been where santana has been most effective when he can get charlo against the ropes
16:29but he can't keep him there long as charlo fights his way off yet again
16:35young legs
16:46one of the few right hands we've seen charlo throw tonight
16:50catches him with the left maybe that's why he's not throwing me right
16:53you're that effective with the left hand why bother
16:57another left hook connects and a good finish to round two from both fighters
17:05the only advantage this guy is going to have on you
17:22when you sit on these ropes they just let him throw punches at you okay
17:25just don't give up don't give up y'all what's happening is when you set up inside take a little
17:31drift for me when you set up inside then he's trying to drop those feet real quick when you set your
17:36hands up so make sure you're nice and tight before you let those hands go all right beautiful work that
17:40around beautiful work action from round two jermel charlo is a very fast fighter that right uppercut
17:47i've seen that on tape a few times from him that's an excellent punch of his and while he's effective
17:52there that is not where he wants to be you heard ronnie shields one of the top trainers in boxing say
17:57only way he can compete with you is if you're against the ropes that's where charlo was in that replay
18:01and that's a bit about the only place that santana's had any advantage
18:07in the middle of the ring charlo has been in control
18:19and now santana tries to put the pressure on once again
18:22and you can see charlo fighting almost exclusively with that left hand until
18:30he lines up that right uppercut
18:34yeah it seems like sometimes his right hand is just a setup punch for the hook and the jab
18:39so it's very rare that you find a fighter that's fighting from the front that much because everything's
18:44coming from the power comes from the back and straight line with the right hand
18:48and keep in mind that tonight charlo is fighting with the left hand that's been banged up a little
18:55bit during training said he injured it back in march it delayed a fight but he uh has been going since
19:01then although it hurts him with a lot of punches particularly his jab but we've seen him using a lot
19:06tonight and like i told him in the fighters meeting you know when you hurt your hand you're out of business
19:10it's very important that these fighters take care of their hands in practice as well as in the fight
19:14yeah i didn't get that he said he didn't have the time to recover to take time off he's 21 years
19:21old he's got all the time in the world feeling that he'd fall too far behind the competition if he took
19:26time off
19:29so he's in there and he's using that left hand effectively tonight though
19:37ducks a couple of punches along the way
19:38showed some good defense as well yeah he can bend at the waist and let the left hooks fly over his
19:46head he's done that
19:52santana coming forward missing with both those and they're just trying to wrap up and he's been
19:58doing a lot of that missing and it really doesn't look good in the judge's eyes when you see an opponent
20:03miss so much but at the same time uh charlotte charlo needs to make him pay when he does miss he has to
20:08work on his counter punching the board
20:14i think one thing we can say safely after only three rounds charlotte does not have a lot of
20:19natural punching power sometimes speed can be powerful and he's pretty fast and he throws that
20:23nice right uppercut but as far as pure power doesn't have it yet and steve he's still young but
20:28that's something that you can increase on that's something you can get in the gym and work that heavy
20:32bag work the mitts but his trainer's going to have to focus on the power it's something that he can
20:37definitely improve on looks like he's got a lot of the other skills
20:44good control of the ring at least against the opponent tonight good movement pretty good defense
20:53just doesn't seem to be able to make santana pay at least not yet
20:56and he gets caught stepping in santana working the body before he gets broken up at the end here round three
21:10well james brown phil simms chris collinsworth and lauren sap breakdown the nfl on inside the nfl
21:17new episodes premiere wednesdays at nine with replays throughout the weekend following tonight's
21:22boxing telecast
21:25last weekend jets lost giants won that's a good weekend if you're a giant fan i think you're trying
21:32to roll it's a good weekend now you're going low but he's missing okay don't come up with a big
21:37big hook just come up and touch him for me okay once we start finding that range then we can rip a
21:41little bit more he's trying to slow down huh start finding that jab in the body good hey you're
21:47doing good though man come back with a hook by hand okay you gotta sit down on shots now okay stay on
21:53them ropes stay on them ropes
21:56well it's pretty clear as we begin round four at least on our scorecards charlo the dominant fighter
22:06having won all three rounds i think according to all three of us correct correct the second round was
22:11close but i had to go with charlo on that as well uh his jab dictated and dominated that round
22:19ready to get through round four here halfway through this fight and kurt again ronnie shields right on
22:24point what he told charlo was you got to sit down and he punches a little more and if he does that
22:28he won't need to back to the ropes that's been about the only place that santana has been able to
22:34have an advantage
22:38jamel charlo told us in the fighter meetings he's aware of the perception that he's a skilled fighter
22:44without much power doesn't get too busy unless the opponent brings it to him and was out to try and
22:48change that tonight but through three rounds it's kind of been a little bit more the same
22:54it doesn't help either from from santana's standpoint that this is an eight not ten rounder
23:03but santana hasn't been past six but usually the pressure friday wants more time to break down the
23:09the busier more mobile fighter and santana doesn't have that we're already almost halfway through
23:14i think it'll be in santana's best interest is is if he punch with charlo i think it gives him an
23:26opportunity to maybe land a big punch or counter punch over top of uh charlo's speed punches and that
23:31seems to be a strategy here of late all of a sudden every time charlo punches he goes right with him
23:37yeah but you see the distance right now he can't afford to stay on the outside like that because
23:41that's where charlo is at home at that's where he can dictate everything with his speed and his quickness
23:50more juking and dancing than punching from other guys i think santana's frustrated
23:59doesn't know what to do yeah i think he tried coming forward applying more steady pressure
24:04it didn't work getting out punched by the quicker fighter as a result he's getting a little timid
24:10and you know a lot of missing to do that as well he's right there he's so close but it seemed like
24:16he can't get that punch off that'll frustrate any fighter
24:32we always talk about how styles make fights well santana's one name opponent was kareem mayfield
24:36an undefeated prospect but totally different body type short chunky guy as opposed to charlo
24:42who's caught in and moves a lot and athletic and what we just saw here was he double jab to get in
24:48a little closer and believe it or not he was in range to land a pretty good right hand from charlo
24:52so that's something we haven't seen tonight final 10 seconds of round four santana starts to step it up
24:59again but once again it's probably too little too late to win that round
25:09tell me okay when he's good okay but listen when he and that said second bear range you see what
25:15he's doing right he's trying to steal the round okay okay where you got to take that drink okay
25:22yeah just a scratch okay give me a drink now listen i want you to back your hands up okay action from
25:28round four we talked about punching at the same time there you see actually all four punches came
25:34one after the other in response to the other guy's punch maybe that's the ticket for santana but i
25:39don't know if he has a hand speed to do it and that's the punch i talked about in behind the numbers
25:44the jab for charlo setting up that straight right hand but again he ain't no puncher make sure we're
25:50working at the end of the round for you just like you're doing okay get in there and work
25:58crossing the halfway point of the scheduled eight round fight undefeated jomel charlo taking on
26:04francisco santana kurt menifee steve far hood and antonio tarver with the ringside here from las vegas
26:12as we begin round number five
26:20santana trying to catch charlo against the ropes again work the body
26:26stop stop be aggressive
26:29yeah and like they mentioned earlier running shields when he was in between rounds he does this 10
26:35seconds you hear that bell that's what he does he jumps on him but now he needs to jump on him early
26:39so we have more opportunities to maybe make something big happen here
26:42because charlo has been in control of every round thus far tonight this is a big night for charlo
26:51this is the first time he's fighting on national television first time here on showbox obviously
26:55if that's the case he told us he's got a lot of pressure on his shoulder tonight carrying a lot of
27:00weight he's a young man there is a lot of pressure and you know what i asked him yesterday about
27:05his style and what if what if people fans find him a little on the boring side because he is such a
27:09strict boxer he said i'm going to win the fans over with my style i thought that was the right answer
27:15you are what you are at least as of now but as you mentioned 21 years old still time to develop
27:22some of that power add a couple of punches and maybe become a tad more excited a good left hook
27:30like that will help but santana answered it as well i think santana got the best of that it looks
27:35like uh charlo charlo buckwood a little bit there and that's that's what i mentioned earlier about
27:41punching with the screen father
27:43stop stop santana maybe a little bit of frustration there you know what he needs to do a little more
28:02now the crowd into it as much as they have been all night long
28:05you know we don't normally associate the jab as being your classic counter punch
28:14but charlo can counter with that jab very well a good double jab there
28:20and he gets caught with a stiff right hand by santana
28:26santana's had a couple of punches this round but they've been too few and far between
28:35i don't know if there's much santana can do to turn this around but one thing when he gets close
28:40maybe try a hook to the body then the hook to the head
28:44about the only time he's worked the body really is when he's had charlo against the ropes
28:48and if you see santana he hasn't once tried to cut the ring off beat charlo to the spot he's just
28:54there following that's a good right hand and once again you get to the final 10 seconds and they begin
29:00the ball santana trying to steal another round but once again probably too little too late
29:09you heard the manager you back up where the hell are you going
29:14why are you backing up you heard the minute did you stop backing up
29:18give me a deep breath come on deep breath
29:21come on let's go listen action from round five was charlo hurting this round
29:32now that was a cupping shot
29:36one more look at the same
29:39action here and well santana landed the hook with the right hand i don't think uh was that effective
29:46and i said santana needs to do more of this well you know what he's on the ropes here and he goes for
29:53the takedown mma style
29:58if you can't beat him in the alley you can't beat him in the ring
30:08charlo comes out more aggressive here to start round six santana beginning to answer back
30:13a little bit of action in the middle of the ring stop stop i got you that lasted for a little while
30:22stop stop stop
30:28a couple good uppercuts delivered by charlo yeah that's good to see him uh i guess ronnie shields
30:34wants him to be more aggressive right now he's moving i got to stop
30:38stop well you can see shields was pretty animated there between rounds
30:43trying to pump up charlo somehow to come out and fight a little bit more well i mean i think he's
30:48boxing very very well but i think they feel that it's it's more in him that he just hasn't discovered
30:54yet and uh you know who knows better than the trainer so they're asking him they're pushing him and
30:59maybe he can step up and get a stoppage here tonight santana leaning on him right now
31:08slugging away most of those punches not effective though well i understand what ronnie
31:12shields is asking for from charlo but you know what he didn't have the power to to get the respect of
31:17his opponents i just don't see oh good stiff right hand delivered by santana and he is hurt right now
31:24let's see if santana can continue to land some big shots there's still a minute and a half to go in
31:29this round santana throwing punches
31:35working the head the most effective he's been all night long and charlo seems to be staggered right now
31:41back into a corner santana right now is throwing a lot of punches but like i said earlier there's
31:47no direction on those punches he needs to take his time give himself room in order to land those shots
31:54and not tire himself out that may be the issue as he continues to throw punches first time charlo's
31:59been in trouble as a pro you can see santana coming right back charlo a good combination to hold
32:06them off here comes santana again trying to keep the pressure going and now charlo beginning to turn
32:12the time
32:20that's good body work by charlo he's still in this fight it seems like he's gotten his wits about
32:25himself and it seems as though santana's out of breath right now too yep i like the way charlo's
32:31responded he's fighting back
32:36santana pretty much punched himself out without much effect had charlo in trouble but couldn't finish
32:43him off and now charlo is still standing and delivering the blow nice uppercut that's his best
32:51point now we'll see if santana can hold on for the final 10 seconds
33:03best bound for santana yet
33:08come on come sit down sit down now listen you get hurt so you got to grab the man and tie him up
33:15okay take a deep breath let it out come on now listen to me this guy's just as tired as you are
33:21you understand do you want this or not do you want it or not for your family man let's go
33:29good stuff in the corner action from round six we've been waiting a long time well you know
33:34antonio and kurt both talked about punching when the other guy punches that's what santana did here
33:38watch the right hand he just got there faster than the faster charlo did with charlo's right hand
33:46and now after santana pushed himself out it was off charlo to the point where i actually thought
33:52twice about how to score that round i did give it to santana because he legitimately hurt his
33:56opponent but uh that was actually pretty close around because of the comeback of charlo and i gave that
34:01round also to santana i just think that he had more uh he just did more for longer than uh charlo did
34:08but he did come back here we go round seven so there's still time for santana in this fight
34:15now that we've gotten into round seven of this eight round event
34:22if he keeps fighting like he did for the first two thirds of round six he's got a shot
34:26seven rounds or more new to santana charlo's been eight and he's been seven or more four times one
34:40stoppage so a little bit of an advantage to charlo although we don't know how much
34:44he lost in his legs from what happened in round six
34:51but it's interesting to see santana come back out he came out aggressively in the sixth and won that
34:56round at least according to our scorecards and now he's backed off again here to start the seventh
35:00and he's not pushing the pace like he did in the previous round
35:09well i guess you could argue that in boxing there's no such thing as a lucky punch
35:13but that right hand he landed i i i guarantee you charlotte didn't see it that's why he got
35:17caught with it and got hurt by it and i never would have thought that would have been the punch to turn the fight
35:21but he needs more of that in these last two rounds to santana but he's not doing it right now
35:32yes it's this distance right here where charlo is really comfortable with and uh you know if
35:38santana really wants to win this fight he has to make this a rugged rugged fight by coming forward
35:43and letting his hands go and even throwing while charlo throws i think that's his best bet
35:51this guy's just eyeing one another right now yeah less movement from charlo but he doesn't need
36:05to move as much exactly because he's not being pressured exactly and he's in control of the fight
36:10as well there's no reason for him to force it it's up to santana to push the pace here in the last
36:16couple of rounds you can see charlo just using a double triple jab then comes with the left hook
36:26he's almost a one-headed fighter throughout much of this fight when he has delivered the right
36:29uppercut it's been effective but he hasn't thrown it much
36:38and i saw right there he's pushing with that right hand and maybe that's the reason why he can't really
36:43generate a whole lot of power and when he step up the ladder with more experienced fighters there's
36:47no way he's going to be able to get away with throwing that left uppercut from outside
36:52they're kind of at all night or being a one-headed fighter for the most part either
37:03go to the final round
37:04we take a look at action from round seven look at the distance between them there is no chance that
37:12santana's gonna land the punch as a matter of fact he jabbed so tentatively there you just saw it
37:16because of the distance between them he knew he couldn't land the punch charlo is so much more
37:21comfortable at this distance moving to his right because of his hand speed and superior footwork he can
37:28land now listen from that distance where santana can't i need you to work your jab three four punches
37:34and step three four punches and step go back to the jab and just work your hands and step
37:39okay okay after those two he's either going to grab you or he's going to run that's going to give
37:46you a chance to reset and go in but make him count minutes it's the last round listen to me you need
37:50this round you understand me you want to do anything for three minutes let's go hey be proud in there
37:56baby how do your business it sounds like ronnie shields is becoming a motivational speaker wants
38:02his fighter to finish is basically what it sounds like i mean they've been panicking over there in
38:06the corner i don't know if they know where their fighter is at in this fight i think he's comfortably
38:11ahead and uh i would tell him you know to just keep doing what he's doing rather than giving santana
38:16any opportunities of having a one punch knockout here i think ronnie knows his fighters ahead i think he
38:22just wants to see more it's a big fight for charlo you know tv step up in competition and he wants to
38:28see him finish strong yeah not just finishing get a decisive victory on the judges scorecards which
38:34is where it's headed right now this is the third straight fight that charlo has been eight rounds
38:39though so maybe this is what he is but i can tell you i've been in the corner where i thought i was
38:43comfortably ahead and my trainer put unnecessary pressure on me and you know what it did to me it
38:48stressed me out to the point mentally i felt like i had to go out and do something more than needed
38:53to win the fight and sometimes it's just not necessary to take some risks that you don't
38:57normally take in that situation taking risks sometimes so i don't know i don't agree with that
39:02all right we'll see how it winds up because charlo's pretty much gone back to the strategy he had
39:07through the first seven anyway and looking at santana i think that this is just an experience thing
39:13with him because i don't think he had the experience to do the things necessary to get the job done when
39:18you look at him punching it seems like you don't have his body connected with his legs he's not
39:23settled and that way you're it's hard to get a knockout or even win consistent rounds like that
39:30well he hasn't been as aggressive throughout the night as he was in that one and only sixth round where
39:36he came out pushed the pace fought counter punch threw a lot of punches and it was his best round by far
39:42other than that he's been kind of on the receiving and waiting yeah but you know what if you give
39:46giving himself a little distance while charler was hurt he may have been able to do more damage
39:52yeah he didn't pick his punch as well at all
39:58but we've said it a lot though on showbox over the years for young fighters it's not only about
40:03winning it's how you look winning antonio at your level it's about getting the w period doesn't matter
40:09what you do to get it and i think maybe that's where ronnie shields is thinking because you know
40:12you got to create a little demand for your product and i don't know if he's effective and as fast as
40:18charlo is i don't know if he's done that tonight stop stop i mean i think he can't be too critical of
40:23the fighter i think he looked good at spots he got caught with one punch really has good legs on him i
40:28just feel that they need to focus more on that back leg developing and delivering power and what's power
40:35his collision he has to work on his timing leverage yeah and timing and be more effective at throwing
40:42both hands as well he was definitely a left-handed fighter all night long tonight
40:49and i want to work in the fact that jermel has a twin brother jermal identical twin brother who's
40:54eight no so welterweight fighter you've got another brother who's an arena league football player as well
40:59so with athletic family and we saw that athleticism on display tonight he's got a lot of power but he did
41:05dominate this fight from the opening bell to the closing bell and i think we all three agreed
41:10that he won clearly seven of the eight rounds and will move his record to 16 at 0. i would be
41:16shocked if it's any other way i have a 79 73 for jermel charlo
41:35so we'll see how the judges scored but once again i mean anybody who saw this it was pretty clear
41:40as to what happened but hey you never know right it's boxing well you know part of what we love to
41:45see on showbox is when young prospects were undefeated who've had it pretty much their own way
41:51all the way through their their young career when they get tested we like to see how they respond and
41:56that's why we like to see them get tested and get matched tough this is what happened in the sixth round
42:01maybe for the first time in his entire career look at that right hand you see the hair flying
42:06that's one of the reasons you shouldn't have hair like that in the ring because it tells the judges
42:10when you've been hit hard and beautiful right hand and clearly charlo was shook up unfortunately for
42:17santana he didn't have to stuff the thickest shots and make the most of the opportunity he flailed away
42:22through a lot of meaningless shots and after about 15 more seconds he was punched out charlo was no longer
42:28in danger but charlo responded well for the first time in his career where he was tested a little
42:32bit yeah you know it tells us about the young fighter he has the ability but he has to get in
42:37the ring and work harder there's always room to grow and right now power should be the main focus of his
42:43camp and his team right now all right let's send it up to jake gutierrez for the official announcement for
42:48the judges ladies and gentlemen at the eight rounds of a junior middleweight action we go to the scorecards
42:59and we have a unanimous decision judge robert hoyle scored the bout 79 73 judge patricia morris jarman scored
43:08it 78 74 and judge cj ross scored this bout 79 73 all for the winner by unanimous decision
43:18he is still undefeated
43:30jamelle charno now 16 and oh still unbeaten as a junior middleweight we'll see what the next step
