Undisputed Middleweight Champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler defends his title against WBC Super Welterweight Champion Thomas Hearns. This is an HBO Replay from the closed circuit telecast the week before.
Transcript
00:00I've been feeding the faith, and I've been starving to doubt, so there's no doubt in my mind that I can't win this fight, or that I won't knock Thomas Hearns out.
00:15I'm here to show the world that I have the ability, the punch and power to get in and knock out Miller Waves.
00:21Let me tell you, I didn't come here for all this bull, jiving, shucking. I come here to fight. I came here with one thing on my mind, and that is destroy Tommy Hearns.
00:31I've been fighting like heavyweights, and taking good care of them. And now I'm going up against a midget.
00:39Finally, on April 15th, after all the hype, two proud champions descended on an outdoor arena and settled their dispute.
00:47There's one for the record books.
00:49I'm just cautioning you now. Obey my command at all times. Shake him and good luck to both players.
00:56And he caught with Hagler with two good japs and a right hand that might have hurt Hagler.
01:01Tremendous pace in the first round.
01:03Don't worry about the gun.
01:05He's got to keep pumping like that now. He's got to keep pumping. You know what I'm saying?
01:08Hagler goes in for the kill, and he's gone. He's gone.
01:11And he may be out.
01:14I can see the middleweight champion of the world.
01:16Marvellous Marvin Hagler.
01:21Tonight, we'll take you back to that historic night in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada,
01:26where two courageous boxers collided in one of the fiercest fights in boxing history.
01:33Marvellous Marvin Hagler versus Thomas Hearns.
01:36Hello, everybody. I'm Barry Tompkins, along with Sugar Ray Leonard, and welcome to HBO's exclusive broadcast of the fight.
01:54The middleweight championship fight between Marvellous Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns that took place on April 15th in Las Vegas.
02:00Tonight, we're going to be reliving all the great moments of that fight.
02:03We'll watch it, first of all, from beginning to end with our ringside commentary.
02:07We will have both combatants with us, and we'll be talking to them about their impressions of just what went on that night in Las Vegas.
02:13And we'll look at the fight once more from beginning to end from a ringside camera.
02:16We will be looking at all angles of this fight, and we'll talk to the people who participated in it.
02:21It was a fight to remember.
02:23Ray, I've never seen you as excited about a fight, either going into a fight or coming out of a fight.
02:28And I think that even includes when you were fighting yourself.
02:31Barry, I'm still pumped up.
02:32In fact, these guys, I commend both of them because they gave boxing the positive injection that it needed, excitement, determination, and most of all, sportsmanship.
02:41Well, with us via satellite, first of all, up at WGBH in Boston, the champion, Marvellous Marvin Hagler, and at WDIV in the city of Detroit, the challenger, Thomas Hearns.
02:51And we want to welcome both of you gentlemen.
02:52Marvin, let me ask you, first of all, when you fought Roberto Duran, there was some criticism.
02:57And people said, well, Marvin was a little bit cautious.
02:59He really didn't impress anybody.
03:01No doubt about it now.
03:02You really made all the amends.
03:04Did you have that in the back of your mind, Marvin?
03:06Well, basically, you know, as you know, during the whole tour and whatever, Roberto Duran came up with every conversation.
03:14As you know, I've told the media that Roberto Duran was history right now, and Thomas Hearns was my future.
03:21And that's basically what I wanted to concentrate on.
03:24You know, Tommy, your career was on an upswing when you knocked out Roberto Duran.
03:28And quite naturally, a win over Hagler would have added to your momentum.
03:32I predicted after the fight that you would retire.
03:34How do you respond?
03:36Well, right now, Ray, I'm undecided.
03:40I haven't made up my mind what I want to do at this moment.
03:43But maybe I'm thinking about waiting to my hand here and make my decision then, because my thoughts are now to retire from boxing and hopefully to go into acting to start a new career.
04:01Marvin, let me ask you once more.
04:03Again, going back to the Roberto Duran fight.
04:04After the fight, you said, come on, guys, you've got to give it to me.
04:08This time, you didn't have to ask anybody.
04:10Everybody has given it to you.
04:11No, I felt this, though, that it should have been given to me after a Roberto Duran fight, but it wasn't.
04:18This fight here, like you say, the people, I think the world is still in an upswing.
04:22You know, everyone's very excited about the fight because, as you know, it takes two to really put on a great fight.
04:28And I feel as though that now things are finally going to start looking very good for Marvis Marvin Hagler.
04:34But I'm also interested in acting career also.
04:38But I think, first of all, I like to knock on the door of Carlos Monzon.
04:41To really make history.
04:43Tyler, I must ask you.
04:44You surprise a lot of people the way you approach this fight.
04:47People expect you to box.
04:48And I understand that you broke your hand in the very first round.
04:51Why did you continue to get in a slugfest with Hagler?
04:54Well, because, you know, every man wants to establish their territory or what have you.
05:06And I wanted to show Marvin that I had the ability to, that I demand my respect in the fight.
05:12Because if you go into a fight and you don't show a man that you deserve respect, then he's just going to run all over you.
05:19And I wanted to show him that I demand my respect.
05:23What is the condition of your hand now?
05:25Right now I have, I'm sitting here with a cast on.
05:29I have two bones broken in my right hand.
05:34And they told me that I'll probably be wearing a cast now for six weeks.
05:39And then after that, it's just going into, just strengthening my hand up for probably one or so.
05:46How long it takes to get the strength back into my hand.
05:50Just going to physical therapy.
05:52Ray, you used the word slugfest.
05:54And I think really that is absolutely the right word.
05:56Slugfest, if anything, is an understatement.
05:59The first round may be the greatest round in the history of boxing.
06:02And that may not be an understatement.
06:05Let's go back then and watch the fight from beginning to end.
06:09This is the famous strip in Las Vegas, Nevada.
06:13The host city for boxing's historic events.
06:16As usual, the battle in the ring has transcended the world of sports.
06:20This, on this night, is the only place to be.
06:23It's a happening where the stars, like Bo Derek and Jack Nicholson, rub elbows with the legends of boxing's past to salute two great boxing champions.
06:34Tonight, from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada, HBO Sports presents World Championship Boxing.
06:42Undisputed middleweight champion, marvelous Marvin Hagler, defends his crown against WBC's super welterweight champion, Thomas Hearns.
06:51Three years in the making, and now we come down to the night of reckoning here in Las Vegas.
06:54And, Ray, let's talk about the big fight.
06:56Both of these men have been in a big fight before.
06:58And the simple fact is, when Tommy Hearns lost to you, he essentially lost it for a year.
07:02It took him that long to come back.
07:04Who will deal with the big event better?
07:05Well, I think Tommy Hearns is prepared for it, mostly, because Hagler experienced the big event with Roberto Duran, and it nearly caused him his title.
07:15I think the question will bring out whether or not Marvin Hagler can deal with this kind of event.
07:20A lot of people are saying that the key to this fight will be the first time that Tommy Hearns gets the right hand on Marvin Hagler.
07:27I would agree, Barry.
07:28I think once Tommy Hearns lands the right hand on Marvin Hagler's chin, and Hagler stands and says, this is it, we're going to see a whole change in the entire fight.
07:36There is one other question to be answered tonight, too, other than the obvious, and that is, will the event be bigger than the fight?
07:41Well, with some comments on the magnitude of this fight, here's our own Larry Merchant.
07:46Larry?
07:47Hollywood, or at least part of Hollywood, is here.
07:49And for many months, people I didn't even know were interested in boxing have been calling me for ringside seats at any price.
07:57And telephone operators, before they put me through, asked me, Hagler or Hearns?
08:02I've been puzzling over this phenomenon, over why this major fight has become a major event,
08:08because neither Tommy Hearns nor Marvin Hagler has ever had box office magic by himself.
08:15Neither of them transcend boxing as public figures in the way that Muhammad Ali and Ray Leonard did.
08:21Nor is there any good versus evil or black versus white hype to this fight.
08:26What is it, then?
08:27What I come up with is this.
08:29It's great to want to be great.
08:32And it's widely recognized in the sports world, if not beyond it, that these two quality athletes desperately want to be great.
08:41And tonight, man to man, they'll decide which one of them is the best at his trade.
08:49Whom you like depends on how you can resolve this equation.
08:53Hagler is the strongest fighter Hearns has ever fought.
08:56Hearns is the best fighter Hagler has ever fought.
09:00We're here to get the answer.
09:02Now back to Barry and Ray.
09:03And the entourage now of Thomas Hearns making its way toward the ring here.
09:09And Hearns, of course, surrounded by many admirers from the city of Detroit.
09:13And there's a good look at Thomas Hearns.
09:14Ray, interesting to note, he was very, very loose when we saw him in his locker room before the fight.
09:19Thomas looked very relaxed, very confident.
09:22And he didn't have that intense look on his face.
09:24He seemed to know exactly where he was and exactly what's going to happen.
09:27That's on Thomas Hearns looking all business, of course.
09:31And it has been the want of marvelous Bob and Hagler to make his opponent wait in the ring.
09:36And, of course, everyone having anything to do with this fight will try to avoid just such a circumstance.
09:43Had to be a definite case of nerves on both parts here.
09:46And Larry Merchant, we talked briefly with Sugar Ray Leonard at the start of this program
09:50about just how each man holds up to the big event.
09:54I'm sure you have some thoughts on that subject.
09:57I don't see any reason to question at this stage of their careers that they can't handle an event of this magnitude.
10:05And that's one of the reasons why it's become such a big event, that they have proven themselves.
10:12And that everybody expects to see a contest here, like all fights decided on the merits of the fighters,
10:21decided by their strength, decided by their styles, decided by their will.
10:26So those are the factors that will decide this fight.
10:30It's a long trip, Ray, from the locker room into the ring here at Caesars Palace, set up here in the parking lot.
10:36What are the thoughts that a fighter has making this long journey through the crowd?
10:39Well, Barry, so many things go through a fighter's mind, especially once he's headed towards the ring.
10:44The fact of the matter is, all the things that he's said,
10:46all the verbal assaults that he's made against his opponent or challenger, well, now he can live up to that.
10:51With Thomas, Tommy made a lot of verbal assaults to Hager and Hager did the same thing.
10:56But people think there's going to be a full-out process.
10:59I think something's going to happen in the very first round because these guys know there's so much at stake.
11:04Larry Merchant, let me ask you one thing.
11:05There was some speculation during the course of this past week here in Las Vegas
11:08that Tommy Hearns might have done some damage to an already injured right hand.
11:13Any elaboration on that?
11:15I don't know of anything that's factual.
11:19Everybody knows that he's had some problems along the way with his hands.
11:24You know, he has the build of a thoroughbred, and sometimes he hits people on the head, and his hands have hurt.
11:33As you recall, he was once laid off for many months because of a hand injury,
11:37and I think he wears extra protection for his hand when he's sparring.
11:42So perhaps that gave some speculation that there was something wrong with the hand.
11:48Hagler coming toward the ring now.
11:50His trainers, the Pedronellis, they've been together for 18 long years,
11:53and this, of course, is the culmination of 18 years of hard work.
11:57The marvelous Marvin Hagler, of course, he had his game face on, Ray, somewhere around Thursday.
12:02Thursday, and he appeared to be very relaxing.
12:05He was able to talk to the press and meet with some of his fans.
12:09He's very, very serious about this.
12:11No joviality as there was in the locker room of Thomas Hearns a little bit earlier.
12:16Marvin Hagler has been business since we got here on Thursday.
12:20He has done the obligatories, as you mentioned.
12:22He's talked to the press, and the crowd definitely seems to be more in support of the champion
12:27than they do the challenger, Thomas Hearns.
12:29The crowd is very supportive of Hagler.
12:31And another thing to bring out, this fight here, because Hagler searches for recognition.
12:36He thought he would get it after Roberto Duran.
12:37But I think this fight here has enough significance to give Hagler what he wants and what he desires.
12:42People are saying that he was too conservative against Roberto Duran,
12:45and you have to have the feeling that tonight he cannot be conservative.
12:49He can be.
12:50He has to be aggressive.
12:51He has to be initiative to throw it right away.
12:53And again, Brian, the first round will be a key round to pretty much know what's going to happen in the fight.
12:59There's a look at the record of marvelous Marvin Hagler, 62-2.
13:02He's got 50 knockouts.
13:04This, of course, is 11th title defense.
13:05He dearly wants to break the record set by Carlos Monzong.
13:08So that is the story of marvelous Marvin Hagler.
13:11Historically, Tommy Hearns has been the faster starter of the two.
13:15Well, Tommy has always jumped on top of his opponents because he's always overshadows his opponent
13:20because of his height and reach advantage.
13:22Here's a look at the tail of the tape, and you talk about the reach advantage,
13:24and it's really not quite as great as you might have expected,
13:27really only a three-inch reach advantage for Thomas Hearns over Marvin Hagler.
13:33I'd like to make a comment about the weight.
13:35But when Tommy Hearns fought Ray Leonard, he weighed less than Ray Leonard,
13:40trying to prove he was a real wellerweight.
13:42Now he weighs more than Hagler, trying to prove he's a real middleweight.
13:48And here's a look at the common opponents of these two.
13:51And again, there's little to choose.
13:52Roberto Duran, probably the most significant,
13:54but perhaps Thomas Hearns got Duran a little bit more on a down than he did on a up.
13:58And here, of course, is that tool that we've been using here at HBO for now three occasions.
14:02Yeah, this is our computer toy, and it will give you some kind of a look
14:07at how many punches these fellas throw.
14:10You see Hagler against Duran, Hagler against Hampshire, roughly 50 punches per round.
14:15The same thing for Hearns, as you'll notice.
14:17Roughly 50 punches per round, landing somewhere between 20 and 30.
14:21So that'll be some kind of yardstick as we move along.
14:24And the rules for tonight's fight, and they are, as most championship fights,
14:29the 10-point must system.
14:30Three-knockdown rule, of course, is waived.
14:31So, too, the standing eight count.
14:33There will be no standing eight count.
14:35You can only be saved by the bell in the final round.
14:37Three judges, of course, scoring the fight.
14:38That has been a vote of contention, incidentally, with Marvin Hagler.
14:41But right now, what's left, really, is to get on with it.
14:44So let's go up to the ring announcer, Chuck Hall, for all the pre-fight festivities.
14:47Ladies and gentlemen, the officials are signed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission
14:52for the next event of the evening.
14:54The judges are Dick Young of Los Angeles, California,
14:58Herb Santos of Reno, Nevada, and Harry Gibbs of England.
15:02The timekeeper is Charlie Roth, counting at the knockdowns, Jane Broadfoot.
15:06The attending positions at ringside, Drs. Donald Romeo, Flip Olmanski, and Charles Filippini.
15:12Your referee for the next event of the evening is Mr. Richard Steele.
15:18This is the main event of the night.
15:22Twelve rounds of boxing for the undisputed middleweight championship of the world.
15:28Introducing, in the red corner, the challenger, the WBC super welterweight champion,
15:35fighting out of Detroit, Michigan, weighing 159 and three-quarter pounds.
15:40His professional record consists of 40 wins, one defeat, with 34 KOs.
15:47Ladies and gentlemen, here is Thomas, the hitman, Herb.
15:59And in the blue corner, fighting out of Brockton, Massachusetts,
16:04weighing 159 and one-quarter pounds,
16:07with a professional record of 60 wins, two defeats, two draws, and 50 KOs.
16:14Ladies and gentlemen, the undisputed middleweight champion of the world,
16:21marvelous Marvin Petra.
16:24All right, Pat, Pat, good eight, let's go.
16:40Okay, I gave both fighters the instructions in the dressing room.
16:44I'm just cautioning you now, obey my command at all times.
16:47Shake hands, good luck to both of you.
16:49As Ray said, Tommy Hearns usually likes to establish dominance early in the fight.
16:55I expect for that reason that Marvin Hagler will look to come on and counterpunch,
17:02at least in this first and perhaps through the first several rounds,
17:05looking for an opening if Hearns opens himself up.
17:08The early rounds could really dictate how this fight will go.
17:14The first round is a key round.
17:17We're underway.
17:19And the pace is up-tempo right at the opening bell.
17:23Hagler being the aggressor.
17:26Hearns working that jab.
17:27He has a very quick jab.
17:29There's no denying it.
17:31And he caught Hagler with two good jabs
17:33and a right hand that might have hurt Hagler.
17:35Tremendous pace in the first round.
17:38I expect it was going.
17:39Both guys are going in it.
17:40Hearns getting the better of it right now.
17:43No nonsense at all here.
17:49And a left hand by Hagler.
17:52What a pace.
17:58You know, both the guys just wing and shots.
18:00So who up this corner of the chin?
18:01There was a left hand by Hagler that stood to Hearns straight.
18:05And a right hand.
18:07Both men have felt the wrath of the other.
18:09Tummel is hurt.
18:10He's going to step back to his legs.
18:12He's going to shake it unsteady.
18:16And a left hand by Hearns.
18:18Threw that off his back foot, though.
18:19There's the short right.
18:22Hagler now just uses defense.
18:24He's walking towards Hearns.
18:25He's doing the right thing now.
18:27Hearns is on his bicycle.
18:28Hagler now is going to his body.
18:30Remember, Roldan caught Marvin Hagler early on also.
18:34There's another good straight right hand by Hagler.
18:37And another.
18:39Now Hearns is using his movements.
18:40He's trying to throw Hagler off balance.
18:44Hearns coming with the right hand lead that time.
18:46Both fighters are really off balance.
18:49Hagler leading with the right hand, but he's kind of lunging with it.
18:52There's another right hand.
18:53Backs Hearns into the rungs.
18:54Watch for Hagler's hook.
18:57Now that was the right hand of Tommy Hearns.
18:59And it did catch Hagler, but he didn't take a backward step there.
19:03Another good right hand by Hearns.
19:07Hagler's working his body now.
19:08Trying to slow him time to deal.
19:10These guys are doing a great deal of energy, Baron.
19:13Tremendous pace in the first round.
19:14Blood coming from the face of Marvin Hagler.
19:16Can't tell yet where it's coming from.
19:18We'll see.
19:19Both guys will definitely be winded in the next round.
19:21It is over the right eye, I believe, of Marvin Hagler.
19:24We'll wait till we get him.
19:25And there's a lot of blood early on here.
19:27An awful lot of blood on the face of Marvin Hagler.
19:30It isn't a place where it could do serious damage.
19:35We'll know between rounds when we get into the corner.
19:38Hagler punishing Hearns now.
19:40But it is Hagler who is bleeding.
19:44This is still the first round.
19:49The second round.
19:51These guys would definitely pace themselves.
19:55There has been no boxing at all.
19:57Just fighting here.
19:58Just slugging blood on the face of Marvin Hagler.
20:01Again, we can't quite tell where it's coming from.
20:03While Hagler continues to dish out punishment.
20:10And now Hearns bounces right back.
20:13This may be the most brutal even round you've ever seen in boxing.
20:16That's as good as it ever gets, folks.
20:27I doubt that there's ever been a better middleweight round than that one.
20:30The question is now the cut over Marvin Hagler's eye.
20:35It looks to be higher on his brow.
20:38Close your eyes.
20:39Close your eyes.
20:41The question also remains, who spent the most energy?
20:43In my judgment, Ray, the surprise of that round was the fact that Marvin hit Hearns some excellent shots and didn't shake them.
20:56There's always been a question since your fight with Hearns whether he could take these kinds of punches.
21:01Marvin has decided to try to assert his strength as a natural middleweight over Hearns.
21:12And at least in that round, he didn't.
21:15And now Tom Harris has a target.
21:18Pull it, pull it.
21:19And the key man in this fight can now be the corner.
21:23Hagler comes out with a quick right hand.
21:26It is not a pace that can go on for 12 rounds.
21:28There's no question about that.
21:31Regardless of how well-conditioned these two are.
21:35Watch the fuck.
21:37You know, the first round, these guys did not use their boxing skills.
21:40They just went in there and just unleashed all kinds of punches.
21:44They were off balance.
21:45This time, Hearns, second round, Hearns is pretty much using his skill.
21:49He's boxing.
21:50I believe, as Larry Merchant said, that both men have taken the best shot of the other.
21:55That was on the top of the head.
21:57That's the punch I'm looking for to Hagler pretty much landing on Tommy.
22:00The hook.
22:01Because Tommy has a tendency to lean back.
22:04And Hag comes with that looping right hook.
22:06There's a swelling under the eye of Marvin Hagler as well.
22:09And also a little bit of blood under as well as over it.
22:13There was a left hand by Hagler.
22:15Hearns backs Hearns up.
22:17Again, Tommy is more so the one-punch knockout, whereas Marvin is an accumulation of punches.
22:22There's another straight right hand.
22:23That one also hurt Thomas Hearns.
22:27Hearns backs up, gets his breath, and comes right back.
22:31Patner has been effective at the right-hand lead.
22:33I like Marvin's tactic so far.
22:35He's walking his man down.
22:37Keep those hands high.
22:38Thomas Hearns fighting a very effective fight so far.
22:48He has Marvin Hagler cut.
22:51Cut is really more above the nose than it is over the eye, although it can cause him problems.
22:56There's no question about that.
22:57There's also a little blood under the body.
22:59What Hagler wants to do, he wants to get Tommy to get the ropes.
23:07I don't like what Tommy's moving.
23:08He's really off balance.
23:10He's not moving with good balance.
23:13Step out, step out.
23:16One minute remaining here in the second round.
23:21Hearns leading with the right hand.
23:22Both men leading with the right hand.
23:23Tommy just put both feet together.
23:25Very dangerous.
23:25Look at him.
23:26He's off balance.
23:26He's awkward.
23:27He definitely is awkward.
23:29This is when Hagler needs to throw that hook.
23:32Tommy's standing right in front of Marvin.
23:36Hearns said he had to keep that foot outside of Hagler to be effective with the jab.
23:40That was a hook.
23:41Good left hook, and Hearns left his feet.
23:43Hearns is hurt.
23:44That was a good get back.
23:45Hearns is definitely hurt.
23:46He is definitely hurt.
23:48And now this is when Marvin should take control.
23:50Hearns was holding Marvin Hagler's right hand there.
23:52Now he tries to fight back.
23:53Takes the right hand.
23:54Takes the left hand.
23:55Hearns against the ropes.
23:56He's on rubber legs.
23:59Another good right hand by Hagler.
24:01Now this is when Hagler really goes to work.
24:07Tommy shouldn't be here against the ropes.
24:10Trying to weather the storm here in round two.
24:13Big round for Marvin Hagler.
24:14Hagler is really on him.
24:16Watch Tommy Legs walk back to his corner.
24:18He's steady.
24:21A little rubbery leg.
24:22Once again, Marvin Hagler hit Hearns some of his best shots.
24:27But there, the accumulation of shots seemed to have some impact as that round wore on.
24:32He's going to be a boxer to Vietnam here.
24:33Try to work on letting him miss with the left and going over here and he ain't cutting his head with the right.
24:36You ever seen?
24:37You got to cut a band.
24:39You got to cut a band.
24:39Just box him.
24:40Stay away and box him.
24:42Just box him.
24:43Just get your second man and relax like nothing.
24:45You're going to do with Colin Jones.
24:46Just think, Calvin.
24:47Just box him.
24:48When you get through with your shot, move off to one side or the other.
24:50You're getting hit on tail end punches.
24:52You understand?
24:53Don't worry about the cut, Marvin.
25:00Don't worry about the cut.
25:04She's got to keep pumping like that, Marvin.
25:06Got to keep pumping.
25:06You understand?
25:07Okay, go ahead.
25:08Hit him.
25:09All right?
25:10All right.
25:10Let's go.
25:16Well, there's no question that two most prevalent words on the lips of the 15,000 here at Caesars Palace
25:21have got to be great fighting so far.
25:26This entire crowd here, as a matter of fact, collectively, is on its feet as we start the
25:30third round.
25:31Richard Steele says, don't push.
25:35What has happened?
25:36Marvin has turned this fight into a street fight.
25:38He's not really box.
25:39He's just pretty much using his own strength.
25:48You notice Marvin punches.
25:50They fell short.
25:51He's onward from throwing all those punches in the second round.
25:53Hagler getting the jab in early here in the third round.
25:56He hasn't used the jab much.
25:57He's gone with the right-hand lead.
25:58He's throwing punches off his back foot.
26:00Tommy just held Hagler on his head, which meant that he doesn't know where he is.
26:07Tommy Hurts occasionally, at least to me, Ray, just looks to be awkward.
26:11He just seems to get his legs tied up.
26:12Well, he really is awkward because of his height advantage.
26:15And now, we're going to get a moment for the doctor to come in as that cut just opened up.
26:20It's not Marvin in his side.
26:23Let him go.
26:25A lot of blood on the face of Marvin Hagler.
26:28And let's see if he just doesn't try to do some serious business or just get through.
26:32That jab of Hearns is effective, even though he's throwing it off the back foot.
26:35A good right hand by Hagler drives Hearns into the ropes once more.
26:38Tommy can't take too much of this.
26:43And again, it's a matter of accumulation of punches thrown by Hagler, which is probably where Tommy's down.
26:48I'm sure Marvin feels that he has got to hurry things up here because that cut is not going to get any better.
26:53There's no question about it.
26:54Right hand.
26:55He doesn't know where he is.
26:57Hagler goes in for the kill now.
26:59He's gone.
26:59He's gone.
27:00He's down.
27:00And he may be out.
27:02I'm not sure he can make it.
27:05Five.
27:06Three.
27:06Nine.
27:11And he's up.
27:12He's up at nine.
27:13He doesn't know where he is.
27:14It's over.
27:15This one is history.
27:17Marvin Hagler, a tremendous victory.
27:20And there will be no doubters in this one.
27:22I felt something.
27:24It was a gut feeling bad that it wouldn't go past three rounds.
27:29Or five rounds.
27:32And the cuts seem to have no effect.
27:34I don't think there's any question, Ray, but that Hagler hurt Hearns in the second round.
27:37Well, see, Hagler initially had thrown it right from the very first round.
27:41He stayed on top of Tommy.
27:42Tommy tried to exchange putt for putt.
27:44He couldn't do that.
27:45I stated earlier that Tommy should use his skill, box his man.
27:49Tommy Hearns being carried back to his corner now by his handlers.
27:52And obviously, a beaten fighter.
27:56I also stated, if Tommy Hearns should lose his fight in the fashion in which it happened, he will retire.
28:02Well, it took him.
28:03We were talking about this before the fight, Ray.
28:05It took Tommy Hearns a year to recover from the beating that you gave him.
28:09And this was worse because he was knocked out cold.
28:15And Marvin Hagler was simply dominant.
28:18Let's take another look at it, Ray.
28:19And I think this, as Larry Merchant mentioned, it was a cumulative effect.
28:23And it wasn't really boxing that was at stake.
28:25It was just a matter of Hagler fighting the type of street fight.
28:28He stayed on top of Tommy.
28:29Tommy Hearns on Queer Street.
28:31Hagler, a good finisher.
28:33You saw that right hand.
28:34I think you made a key point there, too.
28:35Hagler is a good finisher.
28:37And he really knows, although this was obvious, when his man is hurt.
28:40Well, here, Tommy's eyes rolling around.
28:42He was definitely hurt.
28:43Here we have another shot.
28:45And the right hook, which was the key punch.
28:47And I made that point earlier, that that would be the punch that would pretty much put Hearns out.
28:51Well, another thing that we talked about, too.
28:53The first time that Thomas Hearns hit Marvin Hagler with the right hand, Hagler didn't step back.
28:58But a couple of times, Marvin was shaken by Tommy's right hand.
29:03And after a while, I knew that the accumulation of punches to the body, to the head,
29:07and Tommy would retreat, that it was also in Hagler's favor.
29:11Well, that's a tremendous victory.
29:12Marvin Hagler, after he fought Roberto Duran here, really wanted the recognition as the great middleweight.
29:17And, frankly, it wasn't a great fight.
29:20I don't see how anybody could not acknowledge the fact that Marvin Hagler was a marvelous,
29:24to coin a phrase and use his name, marvelous middleweight champion.
29:27A very proud champion.
29:28A very dedicated champion.
29:30And he proved that.
29:32But, again, this fight did not show boxing skill.
29:34It was just a matter of hard determination and a great deal of power.
29:37But the fact is, we've seen Marvin Hagler when he does show good boxing skill.
29:41Well, again, we take a look.
29:43And that right hook put Hearns on Queen Street.
29:45Tommy here is hurt.
29:47Doesn't know exactly where he is.
29:48Look at his hands.
29:49His hands are dropped.
29:51And there's a couple of punches that put him down.
29:54And Thomas Hearns is looking for a place to fall down after that right hook.
29:57It landed above the eye, it looked like, on the side of the hand.
30:00It was a tremendous punch.
30:01But, again, it was just that one punch on top of all the other punches.
30:05Well, both fighters claimed he was going in in three rounds, and the prediction came true.
30:08They were absolutely right.
30:09Right now, let's go up to the ring announcer, Chakal.
30:12We'll get the official decision.
30:15Referee Richard Steele stops about at two minutes, one second, of the third round.
30:22The winner by a GKO, and still undisputed middleweight champion of the world, marvelous Marvin Hedler.
30:31Right now, let's go up to the ring, where Larry Merchant is with the champion.
30:41Larry?
30:42Marvin, why did you decide to come out uncharacteristically so bold in this fight?
30:49Well, because Tommy had a big mouth.
30:50He'd been woofing all through this tour.
30:52How much he's going to put me away in three rounds?
30:54I said, let me tell you, you're going to get it in three rounds.
30:57And it came true.
30:58We both had three-round predictions, but I figured that I would coos off a little bit and let the knockout come.
31:04But I had power in both hands tonight.
31:07And as you know, I started off right-handed, showing him.
31:09I think I kind of confused him a little bit.
31:11And then came back southpaw and put the ammo on him.
31:13Did you feel that you're naturally stronger, and you didn't want to let him start off fast like he usually does?
31:19Naturally, that's what he does.
31:20He sets the tempo of the fight.
31:22He relaxes out there.
31:23People are afraid of him.
31:24And I showed him that I wasn't afraid.
31:26If anybody's got to be scared, you better be scared of me.
31:28And, of course, he can't punch his heart if he's backing up.
31:31First of all, let me say, I want to thank God for giving me the strength, the courage, you know, and the confidence.
31:37I know that I can go in here and take this man out.
31:39Now, I trained very hard, and I want to thank all my spine partners who participated and get me in the greatest shape of my life.
31:44I felt better than when I fought Durant, and I told you one thing what I would do.
31:48I'll reverse what happened to Roberto Durant.
31:50I want him to taste and see what it feels like.
31:53He definitely tried to put the bomb on me.
31:55How was it?
31:56Could he punch?
31:56You've been in with a lot of middleweights.
31:58Definitely.
31:58He can punch.
31:59And, you know, I wasn't going to stand there like I told you, like a statue.
32:02I had to work on the body.
32:04Didn't come up with the head.
32:05Now, he took some of your best shots in those first two rounds.
32:08Were you surprised by that?
32:09No, because I started slowing him down.
32:11He started feeling a wear and tear.
32:12And I just hoped that I could keep my Julian flowing and keep the pressure on him.
32:17I see that he was getting tired, and I knew that I had the opportunity in the third round to put him away.
32:20You had what looked like a nasty gash.
32:23It may not be as dangerous.
32:25I got the best man in the corner.
32:26He told me not to worry.
32:27I'm not worried.
32:28I just go out and do my job.
32:29But the blood was pouring down your face.
32:32So did that make it even more urgent for you?
32:34No, the blood, come on, it don't make me meaner.
32:36I tell you, when I see blood, I get meaner.
32:39You know, they better hope that I never bleed, because then I know that it's time to go to work.
32:43And I got a short time to do it, so I got to do it fast.
32:46You've beaten what many people consider the best opponent you've ever faced.
32:52You've now defended your title.
32:54The winner of this fight will go down in history as the greatest fighter.
32:57I want to hear you say that a lot, because I told you a long time ago that I was a great fighter.
33:01You said, not yet.
33:02Not yet, you said.
33:03You still got to prove yourself.
33:05But did I do that tonight?
33:07I'd have to say that.
33:08Hi, baby.
33:11Yeah, that's a little baby.
33:13Yeah, see daddy boo-boos?
33:15Huh?
33:16Yeah.
33:16Yeah, well, all she knows is that daddy has some boo-boos.
33:19Oh, yeah.
33:20Well, what does daddy have planned for the future?
33:22Are you going to go after Monzo's record?
33:24I'm going to try for Monzo's record.
33:2614 defenses.
33:27I'm going to get rid of the toughest opponent out there right now.
33:29I'm going to take a little rest.
33:31Let my people and I come up with something else.
33:33Hopefully, if the money's right.
33:35Can you stay hungry with all that money in the bank?
33:37I told you I've been hungry, and I had to keep the desire.
33:40These little girls like this, I'm waiting to send her to school, to college one day.
33:43So, I've got to keep pumping.
33:45In 10 years, who knows what the money will be to go to school.
33:49Thank you so much, Marvin Haggard.
33:51Take the baby with you, take the baby with you.
33:53Well, we've talked about just how marvelous, marvelous Marvin Haggard was tonight, Ray.
33:58Let's talk about the other side of the coin, Thomas Hearns.
34:00While Richard Steele was still over Thomas Hearns, counting 8-9, you were writing a note,
34:05and what your note said was, Thomas Hearns will retire.
34:08Now, was that just something you'd like him to do, or do you really feel he will?
34:11Well, I think that's something he will do, because that knockout was too devastating for
34:14Thomas to swallow.
34:15So much was at stake, his career, his ego, and I think those two things will play a major
34:21role in his decision-making.
34:22Well, time will be the judge of that.
34:24Right now, let's go to Larry Merchant, who's in the solitude of Marvin Haggard's now-deserted
34:29locker room, for his final thoughts on tonight's fight.
34:33During this thrilling, furious battle, I found my mind wandering for split seconds, wondering,
34:41could Zale and Graciano have been this good?
34:44Could Rocky have been this good, when they were just making it up and winging it and landing
34:50the kind of punches you know they never land in a real fight, because fighters can't take
34:54those kinds of punches.
34:56In this fight, they did.
34:58It was one of those rare spectacles where two fighters went out to impose their wills and
35:05their strength on each other and to take risk.
35:08To risk everything, to win everything.
35:13That's why those of us who like boxing like it.
35:17We wait for these kinds of events when people at the top level give everything they have.
35:25And what we saw tonight will be stamped indelibly, and for a generation to come, I think it will
35:32be a yardstick of fighting at its most furious and thrilling.
35:39Well, there's no question about it, Larry.
35:41It's a fight that will be etched in the memory of everyone who was there.
35:4315,000 people on hand at Caesars Palace, and you know 10 years from now there's going to
35:47be 150,000 people who will swear that they were there at Caesars Palace on April 15, 1985.
35:52Well, as we mentioned with us, the champion, marvelous Marvin Hagler, and the challenger,
35:56Thomas Hearns, no loser in this fight, believe me.
35:58Marvin, I have to ask you, when you got cut, when you sensed your own blood, did that change
36:04things for you?
36:04Did you feel at that point you had to go after Tommy?
36:07Well, basically there was a lot of things online there, and when you find a little blood,
36:11basically I wasn't too worried because I know I have a great corner man, and basically
36:16I just wanted to get back to the corner and let him take care of it, but it did up the
36:21tempo a little better for me, and that's basically what I had to do, was to take some punches
36:25to order to get some and keep the pressure on top of Tommy.
36:28And that's basically the way you have to fight a guy like Thomas Hearns.
36:32Well, Tom, let me tell you this first.
36:34Even though I didn't participate, I thoroughly enjoyed that first round.
36:38And I tell you, with so many punches thrown, it went both ways, side to side.
36:42Once you saw that Hagel suffered the cut, was that a target for you?
36:47That was definitely a target for me, Ray.
36:49After I seen the cut, he was cut under the eye, that was a target for me, to more so shoot
36:56for, to try to make, to open the cut up more, for the referee to step in, to get the referee
37:03opportunity to step in to stop the fight.
37:06But, you know, at that present time, you know, it was just a war, that first round.
37:14That first round, we just came out and we just really basically gave it all we had in
37:19that first round.
37:20All right.
37:20The first round was a war.
37:21There's no question about it.
37:22Let's go back now.
37:24Watch the first round then from our ringside cameras, and we'll go through that first round
37:27with the two combatants and, of course, with the champ, our own champ, Sugar Ray Leonard.
37:31So let's go back.
37:32First round, Caesars Palace, April 15th.
37:37Tommy, did you intend for the pace to be this furious at the opening bell?
37:41I, you know, I expected it would be a pretty tough pace, but I didn't think it would be
37:46this fast.
37:47It was faster than I expected it to be.
37:51I figured I would come out just basically filling him out the first round, first couple
37:55of rounds, just filling him out.
37:57The same way I was staying, as far as the best punches should be thrown in the fight.
38:05And there, as you see, it came out to be a sled passer.
38:10It was just both of us going for what we knew, you know, just throwing good shots and taking
38:15good shots and coming back with some more.
38:18Well, the way that I looked at it, this is what I had to do.
38:20As we know that Thomas always starts off very fast in every one of his fights.
38:24So, basically, we had to try to smuggle some of his punching power, especially his right
38:29hand, and keep the pressure right on Thomas.
38:31Hey, Marvin, were you trying to silence the critics that stated that you're a slow starter
38:35and the fact that Thomas Harris is such a fast starter that would be in his favor?
38:39Well, it depends on really the style of the opponent.
38:42And with a guy like Thomas, very tall in that, as you know, for a shorter man, he definitely
38:46has to get to the inside of the much taller man.
38:49So, basically, I try to work the body and just keep the pressure on Thomas.
38:53And no one likes to get hit.
38:54I think, basically, we had to establish our game plan and our punching power and the
38:58respect for each other in that first round.
39:00Did Tommy hurt you?
39:02No, I was never hurt in a fight.
39:04As you know, basically, when I get hit, it only makes me come out a little bit stronger
39:08and tougher.
39:10But I give Thomas a lot of credit because he did put me with a lot of great shots.
39:14But, you know, I figured that this is what I had to do.
39:17I had to take some order to give some.
39:20Tommy, what was it like?
39:21What went through your mind, the first right hand that you did hit Marvin with?
39:25And Marvin says he wasn't hurt.
39:27But in all honesty, I thought you did hurt him.
39:28I was surprised.
39:31I was very surprised.
39:34I knew that I hit Marvin with a lot of good shots.
39:37And I thought that he was hurt.
39:39That's what made me react the way that I did.
39:42Because you can sense when you hit a man with a good shot.
39:47And you see how he reacts after you hit him.
39:50You know that he's hurt.
39:52And after I hit him with a couple of good shots, I knew that he was hurt.
39:55So I went on in and I started pulling it on and started adding more shots, putting more combinations together.
40:02Now it was right in about here that you broke your hand.
40:04And if you're, when you see me, when I started to slow down, you know, not throwing the right hand with as much power, that's when I had, you know, hurt my hand.
40:15It was more I was throwing the punches, it was more of an arm punch then.
40:19It wasn't with putting the weight behind, shifting the way.
40:22It was more shooting with the arm.
40:24See now, you see where I'm going over there?
40:26I'm moving it to the side like a hook.
40:28I'm trying to land on that big knuckle.
40:32Well, as you know, this is basically just what we want, Thomas, in a slugfest with us.
40:37And that's the way that we had to, we trained for him to come out and anticipate that he would do that.
40:42And he's done just exactly what we planned.
40:46Well, if there's ever been a better round in the sport of boxing, somebody would have to show it to me.
40:49They don't come any better than that, I don't believe.
40:51How did the judging go?
40:52Well, it was mixed, as you might expect.
40:53Two of the judges voted the round for the champion.
40:55One of the judges voted the round for the challenger, Thomas Hearns.
40:58How many punches were thrown in that first round?
41:01Nothing less than 165.
41:0382 of them thrown by Marvin Hagler.
41:0683 of them thrown by Thomas Hearns.
41:08That's the story of that round.
41:09Another interesting number, though.
41:11Thomas Hearns threw 22 jabs.
41:12You might have expected that in the first round.
41:14Marvelous Marvin Hagler, zero.
41:17And, Marvin, I've got to ask you about that.
41:18No jabs in the first round at all?
41:20Well, basically, as you know, when I fought Roberto Duran, he would counter from every time that I was started to jab,
41:26and he would hit me with the right hand.
41:27So I assumed that Thomas has probably been watching some of the films and was going to try to do the same thing.
41:32So, basically, what I wanted to do was just establish my ground plan, try to work the body, and then get my distance together.
41:38So that once I'm in the inside, that's basically where I wanted to work.
41:42Tommy, we all know you have a knockout punch.
41:44You know you have a knockout punch.
41:45Now, something strange had to be racing through your mind.
41:48You hit him with the first right hand, and he was still standing.
41:52What were you thinking about?
41:53Well, Ray, you know that I have a knockout punch.
41:57I know that I have a knockout punch.
41:59But Marvin didn't know that I had a knockout punch.
42:02You see, throughout the whole fight, it seems to me, Marvin didn't know that I still had a knockout punch.
42:10Tommy, you had said before the fight that you thought you might be able to hit Marvin when he changes from lefty to righty.
42:17Were you able to do that at all?
42:20At times.
42:21You know, there was times that I was able to catch Marvin switching up.
42:28And when I saw him switching up, I was able to hit him with a hook right hand at times.
42:32And then at times, again, when he was switching up, he was able to punch off with the switch.
42:37So it made it a little difficult for me at times.
42:41Marvin, you have a solid chin, a chin of rock.
42:44You've been hit by some heavy fighters.
42:46No, I think they're still right.
42:47How would you rate Tommy punching power?
42:51Definitely.
42:51He does have a good right hand, no doubt about it.
42:54But I felt as though, which I told in the press, that Tommy was going to have to knock me out with that ring pulse.
42:59And I think that basically that was a psychological effect for me.
43:02And it was a good way of making it work.
43:05But believe, you can see I'm still a little puffy here.
43:07But it was a good fight.
43:10Tommy, that's the only thing you forgot was the ring pulse.
43:13I'll tell you that.
43:13Well, I'll tell you, I was looking for the ring pulse.
43:16It wasn't there.
43:18Let's go back and take a look at round number two.
43:20Las Vegas, Nevada, April 15th.
43:24This is the second round.
43:27And again, we talked on the air during the show itself, during the fight itself, about the pace of the first round.
43:33Now, Tommy, you said when we were talking off camera before, for all intent, and I'm not trying to put words in it out there,
43:38but for all intent, your legs were gone by this time.
43:41My legs, I think my legs were gone in the first round.
43:46Because, you know, before the fight even started, I was having problems with my legs.
43:50I was trying to shake them a little, trying to get them loose.
43:53And my legs felt tired before the fight even started.
43:59And I was doing, like, leg exercises in the ring to try to loosen up my legs.
44:04I have a question for both of you.
44:06This appeared to be a very emotional fight.
44:09In other words, you're abandoning your skills, and you're off-balance a great deal.
44:13What was going through your mind?
44:14Were you just trying to get the fight over with?
44:15In the first round, as you know myself, I'm switching from righty to lefty,
44:18and I'm looking for an opening shot.
44:20And I think that I confused Tommy a little bit.
44:23So when he started moving around the ring, as you know, I would throw the outside hooks at him.
44:27Still keeping the pressure on him, keeping him moving the way that I wanted him to go.
44:30And still, when he stopped, I tried to get him to get in that slug stress with me.
44:34That's where I felt as though that I was staying a much better chance,
44:36instead of staying on the outside where he could pop me the way that he's doing right now.
44:41Marvin, I've done your last ten fights, and again, we talked about this a little bit ago before we were on the air.
44:47I don't ever remember seeing you breathing as heavy after one round of fighting as you did against Tommy Hearns,
44:53then after ten rounds of fighting in some of your other fights.
44:56That first round, I know you just couldn't have had that much left in the tank.
44:59I think it was just one of those fights where you had to put everything into it at that certain moment.
45:04Without thinking beyond that, every round was it.
45:07So I think that you just pushed that body as far as it can go.
45:10And I felt as though that I was in great condition, and I could have continued.
45:15No thing about it, but it was a very fast pace.
45:18Well, Marvin, after you suffered a cut, you were so intense.
45:21Was that a sign of desperation? Did you try to just get the fight over with?
45:24Well, yes, because I have my title on the line, and I was hoping that the referee wouldn't get in there,
45:29and I see what Tommy is trying to do.
45:31He's trying to look for the cut, you know, with the jabs, and with the right hand, try to bust the cut open.
45:37So basically, I try to keep the hand down, I mean, keep the hands up and the head down,
45:41and try to protect the cut as much as I could.
45:43Tommy, I've never seen you with your hands down.
45:45What are you thinking then?
45:46Ray, I'll tell you, Ray, I was tired, man.
45:50I was exhausted, you know.
45:52The first round just took everything that I had, man.
45:55I was really exhausted.
45:56Going back to the first round, going back after the first round, I was saying,
46:00what round was this to myself?
46:02I said, was this the eighth or ninth round?
46:05Because it was like I put out so much, man.
46:08It was like we went ten whole rounds.
46:10Did his softball style bother you at all?
46:13No, his softball style did not bother me,
46:17because I was used to working with my spine partner,
46:21because they all were softballs, so I was used to working with that style.
46:25I got adapted to that style.
46:27How do you feel right now?
46:28Welcome back to your corner.
46:29How do you feel tired?
46:31A split decision amongst the judges in the first round,
46:34Dick Young scoring the round for the challenger, Thomas Hearns,
46:37so too in the second round.
46:38Two judges scoring the round for marvelous Marvin Hagler,
46:40and Dick Young, again, judged it in favor of Thomas Hearns.
46:44So the fight's still, for all intent, very much up for grabs.
46:47What about the punches?
46:48They were also very comparable, not as many as the first round.
46:51124 punches cumulatively between these two.
46:5363 by Marvin Hagler, 61 by Thomas Hearns.
46:56Hagler landed more.
46:58He landed 32.
46:59Hearns landed only 26.
47:01Marvin, I have to ask you, in your corner,
47:03Goody Petronelli said to you,
47:05don't worry about the cut, just keep pumping.
47:07In all honesty, did you believe him?
47:09Well, definitely.
47:10I realized, you know, what he meant.
47:13And that was to just keep the pressure on this guy
47:15and keep the punches flowing, you know,
47:17because we felt as though that Thomas was starting to tire a little bit.
47:21And we knew that we threw a lot of punches in that first round.
47:23Something had to give.
47:25But, Tommy, you didn't have the normal balance that you possess.
47:29In fact, one time you put both feet together.
47:31Were your legs weak?
47:33What happened?
47:33Like I told you, Ray, before, my legs was gone.
47:39Even, you know, tired before I even got into the fight.
47:44And that's the reason why my balance wasn't as good as they usually be.
47:48I was having problems with my legs.
47:51Well, Mom, did you notice that Tommy wasn't moving like he used to?
47:55Did you see he was getting weak?
47:57Yeah, I thought so.
47:58Basically, because when I put the pressure on Thomas in the first round,
48:02he knew either you're going to have to fight
48:03or you're going to have to run like anything
48:04and not take anything away from Thomas.
48:07I think that he fought the way that he had to.
48:09If he said that his legs were tired there,
48:11well, then that was great for me
48:13because then I was able to find the punching range, which I needed.
48:17Well, you've seen the first two rounds.
48:19They were sensational.
48:19What about round number three?
48:21That was sensational for the champion.
48:22Let's go back to Las Vegas in the third round.
48:26Tommy, you started the third round.
48:29You looked to be rejuvenated.
48:30Did you find your second win or was this just basically instant?
48:34Basically, I have to say that it was basically just instinct.
48:38I never did find a second win.
48:40I was trying to locate it.
48:42It was somewhere in the arena.
48:45Wandering a lot around the arena.
48:48I was just basically just going to go to the box
48:51and I just moved from side to side,
48:53sticking left jab out there.
48:54And that's basically what I started out doing.
48:57Well, as myself, you see that I'm basically now putting things together now
49:01and keeping the pressure on him.
49:02He's not moving around and not moving away from me
49:04as fast as he was in the first or second round.
49:08Did his movement bother you, Heather?
49:09No, not much.
49:10Basically, this is what I've been doing,
49:11but the holding in the back of the head was kind of unfair,
49:14so I had to get my job done in there.
49:17I thought the referee didn't let me fight enough in the inside
49:19the way I should be.
49:21And, you know, I was just worried about the cut.
49:23Basically, I knew I had to go ahead on
49:25and end this fight as quick as I could.
49:27Now, what are your thoughts right here, Marvin,
49:28when Richard Steele motions you over to the doctor?
49:31I thought that was wrong.
49:32I thought, you know, the blood wasn't in my eyes.
49:34It wasn't serious, you know,
49:35and I could continue.
49:37And, you know, I felt as though we had about a minute or so left
49:40in that round,
49:42so I didn't see any reason for him to stop him.
49:44I thought basically he was looking more in the favor of Tommy,
49:47so, you know, I got a little upset about it.
49:49That right hand right there
49:50seemed to start Tommy on his way.
49:52Do you agree with that?
49:53Yes, it did.
49:53And I think I was from a southpaw style,
49:55and then I turned to a right-handed,
49:57and that's when I dropped the boom on him.
49:59And there it is right there.
50:00Good shot.
50:03Right here.
50:04It's right-handed, I think.
50:05And that was pretty much that.
50:13And I won't even ask you, Tommy,
50:14at this point, what's going through your mind,
50:16because I'm sure what's going through your mind is survival.
50:18We should tell you that the official time,
50:20one minute and 49 seconds,
50:22not two minutes and one second,
50:23as was originally announced.
50:24The reason for that,
50:25I only forgot to deduct the time
50:27that Dr. Donald Romeo was looking at the eye of Marvin Hagler.
50:30And I knew I didn't make the count.
50:36I got up and counted nine.
50:40So I knew that the fight was going to be stopped,
50:43because when I did stand up,
50:47I wasn't in complete control of myself, my body.
50:50Marvin, your first thoughts
50:51when you knew you won the fight?
50:53Well, the first thing,
50:54I was kind of glad that the referee did stop the fight,
50:56that it was over,
50:57because I think if they would have let Tommy back out there,
50:59I probably would have hurt Tommy very seriously.
51:02And we don't need no things like that.
51:03He's doing his job out there.
51:05I got a job to do,
51:06and I think it was an extraordinary fight.
51:08And as we said, and Thomas said both,
51:10the people really got their money's worth out of that night.
51:13They came to see a fight,
51:14and that's definitely what they've seen.
51:16No losers in this fight, I have to tell you.
51:18I think that they did come to see a good fight,
51:21and I think that they got their money worth
51:24and more out of this fight.
51:26I just hope that we can do it again,
51:28and have a rematch and be able to do it once again.
51:30Well, for more money.
51:32Well, it was a great fight.
51:33How good a fight?
51:34I'll give you an idea.
51:35Let's take a look at some of the final numbers.
51:37173 punches were thrown by Marvin Hagler.
51:41166 punches were thrown by Thomas Hearns.
51:43That is an average of one punch every 1.38 seconds.
51:48It doesn't come any better than that.
51:50Marvin, look into the crystal ball now.
51:51What's down the road for you?
51:53Well, basically, I'm going to probably take another fight
51:55by the end of the year,
51:56and probably three fights maybe next year,
51:58and then think about giving up the game of boxing.
52:01Boxing has been very good to me,
52:02and I think that I've done an excellent job for it itself.
52:06And I'm concentrating on the movie aspect
52:09and commercials and endorsements.
52:11Tom, you stated earlier that you were contemplating retirement.
52:14Then you mentioned rematch.
52:16Is it tough to make a decision now?
52:19At this present time, Ray,
52:21it's very tough for me to make the decisions.
52:25I think about it pretty often each and every day quite a bit.
52:31And it's just hard for me to make my mind what I really want to do.
52:36But, you know, in all due,
52:40I'm sure that I probably would love to have a rematch.
52:44Well, Thomas Hearns, marvelous Marvin Hagler,
52:45let me thank you both for taking the time.
52:47Tommy, I know it's not easy to go back over this ground.
52:49And to you, Marvin Hagler, great champion, great night.
52:52Thanks very much to both of you.
52:53I'd like to also thank HBO for giving us this opportunity
52:56to point out a view on it.
52:58And it's our air is your air.
53:00Let me tell you that.
53:00Ray, have you ever seen a better one than that one?
53:03Well, I tell you,
53:05the fans could appreciate that fight.
53:07So much class, so much determination.
53:09Both of those guys, class act.
53:11You know, I really think when people look back on this one,
53:13they're going to say that April 15th, 1985,
53:15was the night that marvelous Marvin Hagler
53:16got his just due as a champion.
53:18And I think they're going to say
53:19Thomas Hearns was a great challenger.
53:21There were no losers in this one.
