01:25Welcome to Showtime Championship Boxing!
01:29Tonight, we come to you from the Big Apple.
01:35This make you or break you town will be the stage for two former world champions in search of another title opportunity.
01:45Barclays Center is the venue.
01:46It has become a popular and important destination for boxing since opening five years ago.
01:51Many memorable fights have been witnessed here and we hope to add another chapter to a growing tradition this evening.
02:02Hello everyone!
02:03I'm Brian Custer.
02:04We are back in New York City and ready for two significant twelve round fights.
02:09And joining me to call all the action tonight.
02:11Listen, I got the band back together.
02:13My guys!
02:14That's Mauro Ranallo, that's Al Bernstein, and that's Brooklyn's own Paulie Malignaggi.
02:19And Moe, let me start with you because we got two fights tonight from two divisions that are really stacked with great fighters and some big names.
02:27Yeah, Brian, when Floyd Mayweather retired almost two years ago, we feared that the glory days of the welterweight division were over.
02:33However, that hasn't been the case with the weight class at the top of the division remaining strong and it is deliciously deep.
02:41You look at Keith Thurman by beating two guys who remain in the upper echelon at 147, Sean Porter and Danny Garcia.
02:48He kind of staked his claim to being the new numero uno.
02:51Now that status could be threatened next month when Kell Brook defends his title against undefeated American Errol Spence Jr.
02:58And let's not forget Timothy Bradley and first ballot Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao.
03:02Now, as for 154, well, Jermal Charlo has said, see ya, I'm moving on up to 160.
03:08But the division remains chock full of young lions, including his identical twin Jermel, Jared Hurd, Demetrius Andrade.
03:15New U.S. citizen Arizlandi Lara.
03:17And you look at the next wave of American super welterweight talent, and it includes Erickson Lubin and Justin Deloach.
03:23And as for the future of the 154-pound standard bearer, Cadello Alvarez, it looks to be at middleweight.
03:29Now, as we've seen on Showtime, Brian, the best part about all of this is the best are fighting the best the way it should be.
03:36That's the key there. Best fighting the best.
03:38And Erickson Landi Lara aside, all those guys you mentioned are either in their late 20s or early 20s.
03:44They are young.
03:45Hey, Al, let me start with you because our first fight of the night, Texas-sized shootout, folks.
03:50You got Jermel Charlo, he's from Houston.
03:53You got Charles Hatley, he's the number one contender.
03:56He's from Dallas.
03:57Neither one have said anything good about the other one this week.
04:01They have really thrown out the insult, and both claim they're fighting for respect here tonight in that 154-pound division.
04:08Yeah, there's no question the regional rivalry has done some things to fuel this fight.
04:15But the eye is on the prize of that world championship.
04:18And one man defending it, one man at long last getting a shot at it.
04:23The man defending it is Jermel Charlo, who is in his very first title defense.
04:28Now, he is a 26-year-old who is 28 and 0.
04:32He has performed very well as a professional, but hasn't yet, according to many, delivered that one signature performance that they think he is capable of.
04:41He and his new trainer, Derek James, have worked very hard on getting more power.
04:47They think they've done it for this fight.
04:49Now, the man he's facing in this fight, Charles Hatley, is someone who, at age 31 now, finally gets a world title match.
04:58And it's been a long and winding road for him as a pro, even though he had a very celebrated amateur career.
05:04He comes into this fight off a 17-month layoff.
05:07He believes, though, that he can get past that, and he can pull the upset, and he can win the title here tonight.
05:15And he comes in off an impressive win over Anthony Mundine in Australia.
05:19Again, a long and winding road to this world title match.
05:22Yeah, Jermel Charlo is talking about trying to get out of the shadow of his twin brother, Jermal.
05:26Now that Jermal's moved up, he wants to show that he's the class of 154.
05:30Charles Hatley said, listen, I just never had a national stage to show what I can do.
05:34He's getting that opportunity here tonight.
05:37Hey, Paulie, our main event, it features two former world champions in the division you basically just retired from.
05:44The winner puts himself in line for Keith Thurman's WBC world title.
05:48The loser, it seems like, falls to the back of a real crowded division.
05:53Yeah, man, you know, you talk about respect with the Hatley and Charlo fight.
05:56Well, you know, it's hard to get respect in the welterweight division because one loss,
06:00and you got to go through that whole minefield all over again.
06:02Well, both these guys are trying to avoid that.
06:04You got Andre Berto, who's been through the minefield in general.
06:07You know, he's had a long career. He's had the winding road. He's been up. He's been down.
06:11He's fought all kinds of guys, taken wins and losses.
06:13You know, the typical road for a veteran like him.
06:16He's including for having fought the best of them all in Floyd Mayweather.
06:19So he's coming in for one last run.
06:21A lot of times when you're this guy's age, people are writing you off.
06:23People are saying, hey, you know what?
06:25Especially when you had this many wars, you know, you've seen your best days.
06:28You might be wanting to pack it in a little bit.
06:30But Andre Berto's not ready to do that yet.
06:31I can attest to that.
06:32It's hard when you get to that age to really resist the urge to keep going.
06:36You want to keep feeling that rush.
06:37So Andre Berto is on the road to trying to attain that one last world title shot
06:42to make the big re-entrance into the big time.
06:45Sean Porter is the guy who wants to be there.
06:47By the time he's Andre Berto's age, Sean Porter probably is expected
06:50to have fought all these big fights as well.
06:52You know, he's facing a fair share of names.
06:54He's younger. He's more in his prime.
06:56And he's probably the favorite tonight.
06:58But he's dealing with the experience of Andre Berto,
07:01yet he's trying to gain his own experience while keeping himself on the road.
07:05He's got two losses to probably the two best welterweights in the world
07:08in Kell Brook and Keith Thurman.
07:10This is an opportunity for both fighters to raise their status
07:15in that talent-rich 154-pound division.
07:19Here's Mauro Ranallo.
07:21Thank you very much, BC.
07:22It is indeed the maiden voyage for Jamal Charlo as the champion at 154 pounds.
07:29Jamal winning it in a come-from-behind fashion against John Jackson in his last outing.
07:34He faces the upset-minded Charles Hatley, who has, well, a chip on his shoulder
07:39the size of his native Texas.
07:41Bad blood should provide for fistic fireworks in this, our opening contest.
07:47And there is the 31-year-old Charles Hatley, who Al has had to, well, endure a long and winding road, as you aptly put it.
08:00And a road that was filled with many distractions leading up to the biggest fight of his career.
08:05Yeah, and the last couple weeks has been interesting for him, for sure.
08:08He filed a lawsuit against his promoter, Don King, had to go through that turmoil.
08:13And then last night, Instagrammed a picture of himself getting rehydrated with some water and another substance.
08:22And it was a distressing thing to the WBC.
08:27And they created some controversy over it.
08:30He had to deal with the backlash of that.
08:32And everything it looks like is okay for him to fight this evening, but that created some moments for him as well.
08:39So, he comes into this ring hoping that he can put all that aside and that he can fight well here tonight and win a championship.
08:47Yeah, he's hoping to run this town tonight here at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
08:51He has won nine in a row since his only setback in August of 2012 against Leonardo Tyner.
08:58He felt that he should have never taken that fight, was injured going in.
09:01Doctors told him to stay away, but he wanted to stay busy.
09:05He's a competitor, but he said it was a valuable lesson learned.
09:08And Tyner, by the way, who also sparred with Charlo, thinks Charlo will stop Hadley within five rounds here tonight.
09:19Well, one of the young lines we talked about.
09:22Jermell Ironman Charlo, who is coming off a victory over John Jackson,
09:30one in which he had to, well, graduate from the University of Adversity, Pauly,
09:35because he was behind on all three scorecards before he showcased some of his power in stopping Jackson
09:41and becoming, well, a Titleist at 154 pounds.
09:45He's here with his brother, Jermell, who has moved up to 160.
09:49And I think, for Jermell, this is an opportunity now for him to really make a statement and escape the shadows of his twin.
09:55Yeah, and I don't need to make a statement and escape the shadows of his twin brother, who's been looking spectacular lately.
10:00But also, in general, he's coming off a pretty negative performance.
10:02He won the world title, so you don't want to call it too negative.
10:04But Jermell has always looked a lot better than he did his last fight.
10:07Jermell has always looked dominant as a prospect, as a contender coming up the ladder.
10:10Last fight, he had to come from behind.
10:12So he showed character.
10:13He showed grit, which is something you want to see in a young fighter.
10:15But now you want to show that dominance that is expected of you.
10:18And tonight against Charles Hatley, we'll find that if he can.
10:20He's got a tricky guy in front of him.
10:21All right, a piece of the 154-pound crown up for grabs.
10:25Al, take us through the tail of the tape.
10:28Perhaps the most important numbers here, the height and reach advantage for Jermell Charlo.
10:33He very much wants to use that and keep Charles Hatley on the end of his punches
10:38and hopefully land some big power punches there.
10:41And Hatley, by the way, will switch from lefty to righty in this fight.
10:44And the rules for both fights tonight, there is no standing egg count, no three knockdown rule.
10:48The referee or doctor can stop the fight.
10:50A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
10:52If an accidental foul or headbutt causes a fight to end within four rounds, it's a no decision.
10:56After four, they'll go to the scorecards for a technical decision.
11:00Now, with the official introductions, here's Hall of Fame ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr.
11:05Ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening to you, and we welcome you to Barclays Center here in Brooklyn, New York,

11:36The supervisor is Bismarck Morales.
11:39Introducing to you our three judges scoring the bout from ringside.
11:43From Newark, New Jersey, Larry Hazard Jr.
11:46From Brookfield, Connecticut, Frank Lombardi.
11:49And from Buffalo, New York, Eric Marlinski.
11:55Introducing to you at this time our third man to the ring, the referee in charge of the action, Harvey Dock.
12:04All right, fans, here we go.
12:0712 rounds of boxing for the WBC Super Welterweight Championship of the World.
12:17Introducing to you first the challenger, fighting out of the red corner, wearing black trunks with yellow trim, hailing from Dallas, Texas.
12:26He weighed in at 153 and three quarter pounds.
12:30His record stands at 26 wins, one loss and one draw with 18 wins coming by way of knockout.
12:36Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the WBC number one ranked world contender.
12:42Introducing Charles, the future Hatley.
12:52And his opponent ready to go across the ring, fighting out of the blue corner, the defending world champion, wearing tan colored trunks.
13:00Fighting out of Houston, Texas.
13:02He weighed in at 153 and one half pounds.
13:06He is undefeated in his campaign in the ring with a record of 28 wins, no losses, 13 wins coming by way of knockout.
13:14Tonight, he is making the first defensive title.
13:18Please welcome the undefeated WBC Super Welterweight Champion of the World,
13:24Jermel Ironman Charlo.
13:34And once again, a referee in charge.
13:37Now to give instructions is Harvey Dock.
13:41Okay guys, you received your instructions earlier.
13:44Remember, obey my commands at all times, protect yourself at all times, touch gloves.
13:48Good luck to you.
13:54So here at the Barclays Center, set for our first fight of the night.
13:59As Charles, the future Hatley, hopes the future is now.
14:03As he is the mandatory challenger for Jermel Charlo's maiden voyage as 154 pound titleist.
14:13Harvey Dock referee, 12 rounds or less.
14:17The opening bell with the challenger Hatley in the black with yellow.
14:21The champion Charlo in the tan trunks.
14:23And we will look for Charles Hatley to switch stances.
14:33Starts from an orthodox position and immediately eats a 1-2 from Charlo.
14:38He says he's an orthodox fighter, but it happens to fight as a lefty.
14:42The question is, which is he more effective at?
14:46Defensively?
14:47Definitely not as a right.
14:49I think what he's gonna try to do, right, keep continuing to switch stances and stuff like that,
14:54is to maybe discombobulate Charlo's style a little bit and throw his timing off.
14:58And now Charlo's gotten off to a good start, though.
15:00A couple of sharp right hands.
15:01And really, since he has started working with trainer Derek James,
15:07he's really began to sit down on his punches as well, Paulie,
15:10with back-to-back stoppage victories and proving that, you know, his brother,
15:14Jamal's not the only one with some pop in the Charlo family.
15:17Yeah, yeah, you know, he stepped hard into that right-hander.
15:19He landed earlier in the round.
15:20I mean, Hatley was going away from it, so he didn't take the full blunt of it,
15:22but you saw the intention on it had a lot of mean intentions on it.
15:31Charlo opened up his own gym.
15:33In fact, has already expanded it as Hatley comes inside,
15:36but all of those punches were blocked or off the arms.
15:40But they're gyms, Al, just 15 miles apart.
15:43And really, there is a brewing rivalry going on between these two.
15:46Yeah, there isn't.
15:47Even though Charlo is from Houston, he says they've embraced him in Dallas.
15:51You know, Hatley is the busier fighter.
15:54He averages about 56 punches per round, Charlo 31.
15:58And when he's a righty, he's busier than he is as a lefty.
16:01Yeah, he just clipped Charlo with a right hand while Charlo tried to step in.
16:05Charlo partially blocked it, but the intention was there with the timing.
16:09Hatley has power in the right when he's a right-hander.
16:12He had the knockdown against Mundin, right?
16:14Yes, you are correct, sir.
16:16Under a minute remaining in the opening frame.
16:19Charlo attacking the body with the right hand.
16:23Oh!
16:26Oh!
16:27Oh!
16:28Ah!
16:29Oh!
16:30Oh!
16:31Oh!
16:32Halley looking to follow in the footsteps of Dallas-Forth Worth champions
16:36in the welterweight division, Curtis Cokes and Donald Curry.
16:39Bantamweight champion Pauly Ayela.
16:41Of course, Halley looking to make his mark at 154 as he...
16:45attacks Charlo to the body.
16:46the body. You see Hatley getting a little more comfortable, a little bit closer in punching
16:49range than he was earlier in the round. You see he's not stepping out as far. He's staying at
16:53closer range. He's setting himself now at closer range. Before he wasn't setting himself at as
16:57close of a range. So he's starting to feel a little more comfortable. I mean, Charlo landed a good
17:01shot earlier in the round, but since then, it seems like Hatley's at least started to get a little
17:06bit more confidence. I'm not sure if it's enough to win in the round, but he's gotten closer.
17:16Let's take a look at the keys to victory in this matchup for Jermel Charlo. Sometimes he has low
17:31periods in fights where he just isn't active. He can't really afford that tonight. I believe
17:36early in this match he needs to create some doubt with Charlo Hatley. I'm not sure he did that in
17:40round one. Make it know that he shouldn't be in the ring with him. Now, as for the right hand,
17:46Charlo landed one in the first round. He has a very good right hand. He thinks he's got more power
17:51in it now. As for Charles Hatley, I think he should stay lefty. He fought the whole round as a righty
18:00and didn't do a bad job, but I think he's a better defensive fighter as a lefty. When he punches in
18:05combinations from round one, he's effective. And when he's a lefty, the left hand could be effective
18:10for him. And you know that he's going to make a liar out of me and fight this whole fight as a
18:18righty and be effective. Even when we showed the clip of him in the locker room, he was warming up
18:23as a left-handed. Yes, exactly. Round two begins here at the Barclays Center
18:27in Brooklyn. Charles, the future, Hatley with a record of 26-1-1. 18 wins coming inside the
18:35distance. The champion, Jermel Charlo, a perfect 28-0 with 13 victories inside the distance as
18:40Hatley tries to go upstairs with a couple of left hooks that were blocked and then a counter
18:45left hand from Charlo. But you see how Hatley's setting himself a little closer and starting
18:49intent to back up. Good counter left from Charlo. But here's the thing. Charlo with the intention
18:55was well, but it was partially blocked and it did not discourage Hatley from coming forward.
19:00This is where the psychological pressure comes in. We'll see if Charlo can stay sharp.
19:06There's a good one-two right through the guard by Charlo. That scored.
19:11And that's the thing. You want to stop Hatley from coming forward. You see, when you want to put
19:15pressure on somebody, you're going to come forward. You got to move your head.
19:17Charlo sticks Hatley with another stiff jab out.
19:23Hatley, you know, both men want to establish their jabs in this fight and they both tried
19:27to do it. Charlo's has been a little sharper, I think.
19:35I mentioned that Hatley normally throws more punches. So far in this fight, he's thrown about
19:4020 more punches. Good sweeping right countered by Charlo. Hatley coming forward. Charlo changes
19:46levels and bounces a left off the body. Charlo's cut on the left eye. I think Charlo's cut
19:54on the left eye. See if he comes back this way. Yes, he is. And that's the first time he
19:59has been cut as a professional. And this is 29th professional fight.
20:04Good eyes, Paulie Malignaggi. I've been caught once or twice in my life.
20:10You know, they both just threw big right hands and both just barely missed.
20:19Final minute of the second round. And there, Hatley gets stung with the left hand from Charlo
20:25off balance. Guys, I'm telling you, Hatley's gaining confidence. He's trying to walk Charlo
20:30down. I know Charlo talked about how much stronger he is and he's punching harder, but he's got
20:33to stop trying to punch so hard and look to be sharper and more accurate. You take a split
20:37second off your punches when you try too hard to put weight on them.
20:44Hatley lunges in with another left hook that was blocked.
20:46What? What? Sit back, sit back.
20:48Under 30 seconds left. And this is the second stanza scheduled for 12 for Jermel Charlo's
20:55154 pound title. Both coming off long layoffs. Both wish they were busier. Both chuck it up
21:03to the business of boxing. And we may be seeing in these opening rounds, both of them just trying
21:09to fight off the ring. Rostovs! Charlo caught him with a right hand and that backed Hatley
21:14up momentarily. Great shot by Charlo. I think there was a little bit of balance. He's gone
21:18back, but still, great shot to close the round.
21:23Huh? Come on, man. No, no, no. I know you're off balance with your leg. How you feel?
21:28How you feel? Water, Kiki. Good butt.
21:32Gotta keep your hands up. Got a little shot one time.
21:34So, some drama in the last round. Round number two. First, there was a clash of heads that we
21:41believe created the cut. That, we believe, created the cut over the left eye of Charlo.
21:46Later in the round, though, I mentioned Charlo would want to land the right hand. He sets it up
21:52by pawing with the jab. There's the jab. There's the straight right hand. And you could have called
21:56this a knockdown. Because as he goes backwards, it is the ropes that keep him up.
22:03It was questionable. Could have gone either way. Harvey Dock looking at it very carefully.
22:09It was more balanced shot. It definitely landed punch. So, yeah, you could call it better.
22:13Close call. I mean, you can't really criticize the right hand.
22:15He went back more from the momentum than it did from the impact of the shot.
22:19Big question is whether the ropes kept him up.
22:20Yes. It might have.
22:21And round three. Hadley has been down six times already in his career. Most recently against
22:28Anthony Mundine. A right hand of the tenth round of a fight that, of course, Hadley prevailed in
22:34down under. That was 17 months ago, by the way. And he said, oh, a nice left hook ripped to the
22:40body by Charlo. Hadley told us, I've had layoffs before in my career. I don't think the 17 months
22:46will affect me. And he hasn't looked. It's not that he hasn't looked sharper in his first couple rounds.
22:51Paulie, what did you like about that lead left hook to the body that Charlo liked?
22:55I see him keep continuously trying. It's obviously something I haven't noticed before. I mean,
22:59he's obviously got a guy that goes to the body. He has the entire repertoire, but he's making a
23:03concerted effort to get to the body. I don't know if this is more of the sparring with Errol Spence
23:07he's been doing or what now. The first time he has sparring with his teammate Errol Spence.
23:13And he's also a great body puncher, but I've noticed Charlo tried that couple of counter left hook
23:17downstairs a couple of times now.
23:25Right now, you're watching the 154-pound title fight between Jermel Charlo and his mandatory
23:35challenger, Charles Hadley.
23:43And Hadley has remained orthodox as again. He takes the ladder. Down goes Hadley for the seventh
23:49time in his career.
23:50One, two, five, six, seven, eight. Give me a glove. Give me a glove. You're right?
23:57He's got to start getting out of the way of that right hand. He's continuously getting hit with it.
24:02Charlo said he wanted to make a statement. He wanted to knock out Charles Hadley. He's knocked
24:07him down here in round number three.
24:12And I believe part of this, to be honest, is that as a righty, he's less effective defensively.
24:17Charles Hadley, and he's been hit with big right hands.
24:20Final minute of the third frame, and Charlo walking down Hadley, has him on the ropes.
24:26Pong with the jab. Sticks the jab.
24:30And it's now Charlo who has all the confidence, Paulie.
24:32Absolutely. I saw him looking at his corner there in that little clinch.
24:36You know, he's not into them. He said he got under control.
24:39He's going to try to set up Hadley for a finish. Hadley's got to try to start getting out of the way
24:42of these right hands. He keeps going straight back when the right hand comes his way, if you notice it.
24:45Sometimes he gets partially hit with it. It caused the almost knockdown at the end of the last round,
24:49and it caused this knockdown this round.
24:51He's got to slip to the right hand, not go straight back on the right hand.
24:56It seems to be a bad habit that obviously should have probably been corrected in the gym.
25:01Because he's repetitively making the same mistake when the sharp right hand comes his way.
25:05A good round for the champion, Jermell Charlo, who drops Charles Hadley here in round number three.
25:15Time!
25:16How do you feel? How do you feel?
25:23How do you feel?
25:24Put a bucket in there.
25:26Take that stuff out or you can rest out, you see?
25:28You can't get hit with no right hand, Charlie.
25:34Well, there was foreshadowing before this that the right hand could get there for Charlo,
25:38and it did in this round in a big way, creating the knockdown of Charles Hadley.
25:46Again, using the good jab to set it up, and then coming with the right hand that landed on the temple of Charlo.
25:51Picture perfect from Charlo, how short that right hand was, his elbow tucked in as he threw straight.
25:56Yeah, and he said how he and they've been working on the—yep, there you see an example of it—how they've been working on power.
26:03Yep, and he put his weight on it, and he has momentum coming forward, as you were saying now,
26:08working on that tile, working on putting the weight behind it,
26:10and fundamentally correct as he came with that right hand.
26:13Very straight, sharp.
26:16This is round number four, and Charles Hadley comes quickly out of the corner,
26:22knowing that he has to get back into the fight after hitting the deck for the seventh time in his career.
26:28Remember, his lone loss was he had a knockout against journeyman Leonardo Tyner.
26:33Prior to that fight, he had torn his ACL, Al.
26:36Two months prior to the fight, he had had surgery.
26:38The doctor didn't want him to fight for a year.
26:41He said, no, no, I've got to get back in the ring.
26:43But in hindsight, it's 20-20, as they say.
26:46Yeah, he felt he probably shouldn't have fight.
26:47Tyner, not a monstrous knockout puncher.
26:49You saw that, and Hadley was a big favorite in that fight.
26:53Clearly, tonight, um, the power of Charlo has made an impact early.
26:59You know, Charlo's starting to get the timing down.
27:02He's starting to time Hadley coming in.
27:04Shotgun jab by Charlo.
27:06Hadley's got to start using some feints.
27:08Oh, and to the body with the left hand,
27:10but Harvey Dock admonishing him, making sure he keeps it above the belt.
27:15Hadley's got to take a couple of minutes.
27:17But there, Hadley's got to start feinting.
27:20Charlo's starting to time him where he's at.
27:22He's starting to stay at the same distance,
27:24which a couple rounds ago looked like you were starting to get comfortable walking Charlo down.
27:27But now, it seems like Charlo's getting the timing here.
27:30He's got to start feinting.
27:31As long as his hands go here, but you've got to mix him with feints out.
27:33Yeah, now, see, there he threw a combination.
27:37Jermell Charlo is the kind of fighter, if you throw combinations at him, you can freeze him.
27:42And there, Hadley was able to do it. Jackson did that in the fight they had,
27:46but Hadley hasn't been able to do it much in this fight.
27:48But in order to throw the combination out, you've got to freeze him with the first punch.
27:51That's right.
27:51If Jermell is able to make a move or slip that first punch or slide on the first punch,
27:56you don't have him in target to throw a second and third shot.
27:58So that first punch is important.
27:59Right.
28:00And that first punch becomes important for two reasons.
28:02One, to freeze him, but also another one, if you just throw it in a single way,
28:05Jermell can counter you.
28:09Which is why you've got to feint with it, at least.
28:15Final 60 seconds of the fourth.
28:19Charlo was cut by the left eye midway through round one, possibly by a clash of heads.
28:25Hadley stunned from a straight right to the chin with John's seconds left in round two,
28:29and then Hadley was knocked to the canvas midway through round three,
28:33but Hadley just landed the left hook to the head.
28:38Now Hadley utilizing some lateral movement.
28:42Trying to freeze Charlo, but Charlo, very confident, remaining in the pocket, coming forward.
28:54That was kind of intentional.
28:55I wonder if we're going to get a real good three rounds.
28:56That was not an accident to me.
28:59Semi-intentional, yeah.
29:03Or partially, but made to look semi.
29:05Yeah, right.
29:06Or totally, I mean, but made to look semi.
29:11Charlo with the right hand, and Hadley over the top with a couple of right hands on the front.
29:16He's got to stop going straight back, though.
29:18Hadley's going to get, he's clipping another shot if he's going straight back like that.
29:21The head, butt, intentional, and in behind the head.
29:29Let's keep it clean.
29:30Let's keep it clean, all right?
29:33I saw everything.
29:34Okay.
29:34Right here, the head, butt, intentional, and in behind the head here.
29:38Let's keep it clean.
29:43Early on in the round, you heard Harvey Dock warning Hadley about things.
29:49But first, we'll take a look at a very effective punch.
29:51The good straight left jab by Charlo that literally knocked Hadley off balance.
29:56And this is why Hadley's supposed to faint with the jab first.
29:59You know, because see how Charlo timed that jab with his own jab.
30:01And then later on in the round, here's where it looked like an intentional headbutt.
30:07Kind of leaning over with his head.
30:09Jamel Charlo says, wait, what's going on here?
30:12Remember when your kid used to thumb wrestle?
30:14It looked like he was head wrestling there.
30:15He's trying to push him back.
30:18Well, these two have five on it.
30:19It's the fifth round of this 154-pound title fight.
30:24Jamel Charlo, newly minted as champion in his last outing against John Jackson.
30:30Hadley actually sparred with Jackson.
30:34Here it is.
30:35At this distance, you got to use the feints.
30:36You got to change the look.
30:38You know, you got to get different looks here and there.
30:41If you're going to stay at this distance, right, this is a very dangerous distance
30:44because you both can hit each other with almost any shot.
30:46So you got to start changing looks.
30:48Give a little bit of feints.
30:49You know, be creative in here.
30:52You can mentally get an edge if you're laying shots here.
30:54But you're also at risk of getting hit yourself.
30:56See, that's why you got to be creative and you got to bury things.
30:58Charlo content with that stinging jab that
31:03snapped Hatley's head back like the proverbial Pez dispenser with one minute now gone here in the
31:09fifth frame.
31:10And Charlo very comfortable, very composed, methodically walking down Charles Hatley.
31:16We have not seen Hatley fight as a lefty once in this fight, which is really surprising.
31:23In all the video we've watched of him, we never once saw him fight an entire fight as either a
31:28righty or a lefty.
31:29Halley moving around and getting some booze, but Jamel can just cut off the ring here.
31:33That's exactly what he should be doing.
31:35And Halley trying to fight out of the corner.
31:37But I tell you what, Halley looks confused to me.
31:39This isn't movement where you're trying to lure Jamel into a trap.
31:41This is movement where you're hoping that Jamel makes a mistake casing you.
31:45Midpoint of the fifth.
32:00The counter right hand by Charlo misses with the short right uppercut on the inside, however.
32:06Nice jab, man.
32:07That jab has been stinging all night long out.
32:10And in fact, we look at the show stats.
32:14That was a beautiful double jab to the head and body.
32:16We see the jabs by Charlo.
32:18He's landing at about 31%, throwing more of them than Hatley, and just being more effective
32:23with it.
32:24That's the thing that Charlo is known to have with it.
32:26Yeah, he possesses a rapier jab tonight.
32:29Malti and his brother, showing it off tonight.
32:31It's really been working for him, didn't keep.
32:32Adley, clubbing the way with the left hook, but gets countered with the left hook upstairs
32:44by Charlo.
32:45Much more effective in his offense.
32:48Under a half a minute remaining in the fifth.
32:54Adley, double left, misses with the uppercut.
32:58See, there he goes straight back again.
32:59Oh, that right uppercut caught the jaw.
33:01That's the thing, he goes straight back again.
33:03He's got to stop going straight back when the combination comes his way.
33:06Oh, I think he's so leery of the jab, he doesn't want to get hit with it.
33:09He started going straight back when the jab is just backing him up now.
33:15Oh, good counter right uppercut to the bail by Charlo.
33:17Jermel Charlo being creative,
33:36using the jab to set up the straight right hand and then will come with the uppercut.
33:53So that's an interesting three-punch combination from Jermel Charlo.
33:57And that's the thing, he showed a little bit of variation with the repertoire.
34:00He tried the hook there because the right hand came around and he arced it.
34:03And by arcing it, he was able to set his body to throw the uppercut afterwards.
34:07A little bit harder if you're throwing the right hand straight because your body is going to turn,
34:11the hip is going to turn too much to kind of come back and reset for the uppercut.
34:14But by arcing it, he was able to just touch and come with the uppercut.
34:17This is round number six.
34:20Charles Hadley started boxing when he was, well, only eight years of age.
34:26And he had a stellar amateur career. He eats another jab from Charlo.
34:29In fact, he had more than 300 amateur fights with victories over the likes of Keith Thurman.
34:35As Charlo goes to work on the body and upstairs, a barrage of punches.
34:40And Hadley stumbling forward, gets rocked with that sweeping right, and goes down face first.
34:47It's over. Statement made by Iron Man, Jermel Charlo.
34:52And he talked to us about that power yesterday, and that was it showing it off right there.
35:06You know, it's funny, Jermel Charlo, his brother, told us yesterday
35:09that he said, you know, my brother is putting more weight on the shots.
35:12I notice it when he's training.
35:16And of course, immediate concern for the fallen Charles Hadley.
35:21But Jermel Charlo
35:25with a vicious knockout, the 14th of his career as he improves to 29-0.
35:33The young lion is rowing tonight!
35:45He's stretching and rain, as I happen.
35:46look at that space!
35:48you gotta go back, you gotta go back, you gotta go back, you gotta go back, you gotta go back, you gotta go back.
35:54I'm good, I'm good.
36:24Well, as we look at the numbers, the show stats, Charlo landing his power punches at a 52% rate, and by the way, he closed the show by landing 14 of the last power shots he threw in a power shot just to define as anything other than a jab, whether it be to the body or the head.
36:52And he certainly landed his share, landed at a very good percentage, and did enough with the jab to help set up those right hands.
37:00Yeah, and that's exactly the point right there, Al.
37:02You know, because he was so accurate with the jab, it allowed, it made Hatley, it forced Hatley to take his mind off the power shots because he kept getting hit with jabs.
37:09And you start thinking, man, I can't get out of the way of this jab.
37:11And you start looking for the jab, and all of a sudden, the big shots start to surprise you when they're following up from the jab.
37:17Well, Charles Hatley, nice to see that he's on the stool.
37:19Nice to see that he's conversing.
37:21Here's how it ended and gave that man Jumel Charlo the win, first at regular speed.
37:34Both, they were in a really good exchange here, an interesting exchange, but there comes the right hand of Charlo.
37:40He had been so accurate with it, and Hatley landed in a very awkward position.
37:45And Fundamentals won this exchange for Charlo.
37:48If we're going to look at it, we're going to see Hatley's hands all over the place.
37:51Yeah, he's very wide.
37:52Jumel is throwing from a better position.
37:55His hands are coming from higher.
37:56His hands are tucked better.
37:58He's throwing the shorter shots.
38:00Fundamentals won this exchange for Jumel.
38:02Watch the last right hand where it's coming from.
38:03Watch.
38:03He tucks his hand to his chin, and then he shoots it right from his chin.
38:07Very important here because that makes the shot.
38:09First of all, it allows you to put more weight on it, first of all.
38:12Second of all, it allows you to make the shot shorter.
38:13If you're shooting it from your hip or you're shooting it from a little lower,
38:17you're never going to get the right hand out there the right way.
38:19Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran.
38:21Remember, Al, what a vicious knockout in which Duran fell face first.
38:24Well, Charles Hatley just did the same.
38:27Hatley thought it was time to play the game.
38:29Well, it was game over, courtesy of Jumel Charlo,
38:33who remains undefeated and lays claim to a piece of the 154-pound crown.
38:43Let's make it official.
38:48Here is Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
38:53Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of 32 seconds in round number six.
38:59He is the winner by way of knockout.
39:01He is still undefeated and still the WBC Super Welterweight Champion of the World,
39:10Jermel Ironman Charlo.
39:16Well, the styling and profiling Jermel Charlo to the victor go the spoils,
39:29sartorial splendor.
39:30And Al, what a performance tonight.
39:33Yeah, Jermel Charlo talked about his power.
39:36He had had 13 KOs in 28 fights coming in,
39:39but in his last two fights he has shown that he and Derek James are in fact improving that power,
39:45and he's the force to be reckoned with at 154 pounds.
39:52All right, let's go up to Jim Gray, who's standing by with the champ.
39:56All right, Mauro, thank you very much.
39:58Jermel, congratulations.
39:59Uh-huh.
40:01You seem to have control of this fight from the beginning.
40:03Was that your assessment as well?
40:05Of course.
40:06It was my assessment.
40:07I want to say thank you to all my fans.
40:10I want to give honor to God.
40:12This has been a true, hard, strong camp,
40:15knowing that I had to train in his hometown with my coach.
40:19And I just want to say I love my brother because he's still by my side.
40:24And how about your new coach?
40:25How about your new trainer?
40:27He's been good.
40:28It's been one of the best things that happened to me right now.
40:30Let's take a look here in the third round
40:32and tell us what happened here on this first knockdown,
40:35which made you firmly in control of this fight.
40:39He's that jab on top of the right hand.
40:44Mm-hmm.
40:46And did you basically know that at that point
40:48it was only going to be a matter of time
40:51and you just wanted to pick your spots the next couple of rounds?
40:53No, I knew Charles Hadley had, you know,
40:56he'd go down sometimes and he'd get back up.
40:59And he's a warrior, so he'd keep fighting.
41:00And so I knew I was going to have to get in there
41:02and be a dog and be a lion.
41:04And then you started...
41:05Not a dog's bark.
41:06Well, and then the lion growled here
41:08as we take a look at the sixth round.
41:10Got a nice lion suit on right here, too.
41:12Yes, indeed.
41:12As we go to the sixth round,
41:13tell us about the end of the fight right here, Jamil.
41:16Well, I was in the...
41:17I was in the process of exchanging with him.
41:21And that was the last punch.
41:22There you go.
41:25All right.
41:26So now, defend your title.
41:28Had 11 months off.
41:29What would you like to do next?
41:31You know, get back with my team.
41:32And I know I got...
41:33I'm the champ, so I got to continue to fight
41:35my mandatory, but...
41:37They got a guy named Jerry Heard
41:40that took my brother's title.
41:42We can unify.
41:44That's what you'd like to do?
41:45Indeed.
41:46All right.
41:47Congratulations, Jamil.
41:48Good seeing you.
41:49All right, Mauro.
41:50Back to you.
41:51All right, Chairman.
41:52And guys, music to the ears of boxing fans everywhere.
41:56The word unify.
41:57We need to hear it more.
41:58Yeah, and the 154-pound division,
42:00certainly an intriguing one,
42:01as you outlined at the beginning of the show.
42:04Just over 9,000 fans have congregated
42:07here at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn,
42:09and we are set for another showdown in...
