01:07Showbox, the new generation.
01:13We begin a new year here on Showbox, the new generation.
01:17From the Arizona desert, we are in Tucson for tonight's three-fight card at Casino del Sol,
01:24where El Nino is just a rumor, and the only expected storm will be in the ring.
01:29We are in the Conference Center at Casino del Sol, and once again, true to what this series is all about,
01:34we have three fights that will test the mettle of six hungry fighters.
01:39We begin in the Super Lightweight Division, where heavy-handed Bakhtiar Yuboff will take on the improving Jared Robinson.
01:47Then it's on to the big boys.
01:49We'll get another look at heavyweight Jarrell Big Baby Miller tonight.
01:53He faces the test of left-hander Donovan Dennis.
01:56And in our main event, we welcome two middleweights back to Showbox, this time facing each other.
02:03Undefeated Rob Brandt takes on to Carla Perez in a scheduled 10-rounder.
02:08And hello again, everybody. I'm Barry Tompkins, once more with my partner Steve Farr.
02:16We welcome you to a new year of boxing here on Showtime, a year for us, quite frankly, to celebrate.
02:21Showtime Championship Boxing this year celebrates 30 years on the air with some of the greatest fights ever.
02:27Later on this year, our little series right here celebrates its 15th year on the air.
02:34And Steve, I think it's fitting and proper that our main event tonight really speaks directly to the mission of Showbox, the new generation.
02:41Two guys, very competitive fight. It's a pick-em main event, I think.
02:46Definitely so. In the middleweight division, Barry, Rob Brandt and DiCarlo Perez actually have a lot in common.
02:49They're about the same age. They've had about the same number of fights.
02:53They turned pro around the same time. But there are some key differences.
02:56For one thing, Rob Brandt turned pro in the World Series of Boxing and weighed 189 pounds.
03:02DiCarlo Perez, when he turned pro, 146 pounds.
03:05Obviously, they're meeting somewhere in the middle tonight.
03:07And one other big difference. DiCarlo Perez has fought much better opposition to date.
03:11Whether that turns out to be a key factor in determining the outcome, that's what we're here to see.
03:16Because Rob Brandt was expected to win in his Showbox debut against Louis Rose last October,
03:23maybe we didn't give him enough credit when he defeated the Dog and Rose by majority decision.
03:28Tonight, Brandt's matched even tougher, so I have no expectations.
03:31But I'll tell you this, if Brandt wins this one and looks good doing it, he's not only a legit prospect, he's a top prospect.
03:39Because DiCarlo Perez wasn't expected to win his Showbox debut against two-time Olympian Juan Cabrera last August,
03:46maybe we gave him too much credit when he defeated Cabrera by unanimous decision.
03:50Tonight, Perez isn't much of an underdog at all, and his handlers actually think this will be an easy fight.
03:56If they're right and Perez wins, he'll take Brandt's place as a soon-to-be contender at middleweight.
04:01And with that, here's the third member of our broadcast team, Al Diamante, Raul Marquez, former junior middleweight champion of the world.
04:10Raul, we've been talking about our main event tonight.
04:12What a competitive fight it is.
04:13Two guys matched tougher than ever before.
04:15Give me your thoughts first on Rob Brandt.
04:17Well, he's a pure technical boxer, and he's got a very educated jab that he uses to set up his combinations.
04:22He's very smart inside the ring.
04:24He makes good defensive adjustments.
04:26But what I really like about him in his last fight, when things got tough in there,
04:30he was able to keep his composure and be able to think and work throughout the fight
04:34and work out of it and still come up with the victory.
04:36So a lot of potential.
04:38Now he's got to use it tonight.
04:39All right.
04:39Let's talk about DiCarlo Perez.
04:40He's really the B side of this card, if you will.
04:43But when we talked to him, he said, I'm here to win.
04:46Tell us a little about DiCarlo.
04:48Natural gifted athlete.
04:49I mean, he's young.
04:50He keeps a very busy pace.
04:51He's very consistent with his combinations.
04:54And he's the type of guy that as the fight goes on, he gets better and stronger.
04:57You know, he's in tremendous shape.
04:59He's got a good body attack.
05:00That's his bread and butter punch.
05:01He likes to work downstairs, wear down his opponent.
05:04And you know what?
05:04The activity right here might be the key.
05:07And it wouldn't surprise me if he gets the victory here tonight.
05:09All right.
05:10Top to bottom.
05:11I think a really exciting card here in Tucson.
05:14We come to our first fight of the evening.
05:16It takes place in the super lightweight division.
05:18That features two undefeated fighters.
05:22Bakhtiar Yuboff against the more experienced, twice beaten, I should say, Jared Robinson in
05:27a matchup scheduled for eight rounds.
05:33And here is a look at the 33-year-old Jared Robinson.
05:36He started boxing at the age of 19, had 68 amateur fights.
05:41He was the bronze medalist in the U.S. National Championship back in 2008.
05:46But he didn't turn pro until he was 26.
05:49Robinson came to Showbox almost two years ago with an undefeated record built mostly on
05:54what we call Southern hospitality.
05:56And faced a highly touted, undefeated prospect, Amir Imam.
06:01Robinson hoped to finesse his way to victory, but he succumbed to Imam's power, was stopped
06:06in four rounds.
06:07He's 2-1-1 since, the draw being his strongest performance to date.
06:12That game against heavy favorite 23-0 Haskell Rhodes in June.
06:16Tonight, he'll find himself in a similar spot to when he fought Imam.
06:20He'll look to avoid the punching prowess of his opponent and box his way to victory.
06:25Steve, take us behind the numbers on Jared the Warrior Robinson.
06:30Well, Barry, all grown up, when we first saw Robinson on Showbox, he was really green.
06:36Now he's a 10-round fighter who's faced three top prospects.
06:39No hitter.
06:40Only seven KO wins in 19 fights for Robinson.
06:43It's telling that his three most recent KOs came against opponents with a combined record
06:47of 21, 78, and 4.
06:50And still learning, Robinson's fought only twice in 2015.
06:54That's simply not enough, because he's still playing catch-up, having turned pro at 26.
07:03And the other half of this match-up, he is 29-year-old.
07:13He's 30-years-old now.
07:15Great amateur, Bakhtiar, the Bakhtiar bullet, Yubov, comes to us from Kazakhstan, and he earned
07:22a reputation as a knockout artist.
07:25Of his 150 amateur fights, he says, most of those ended by knockout.
07:30That is not his real due, oh, by the way.
07:32Like his opponent, he turned pro at 26.
07:35Now he's been fighting almost four years.
07:37Run off nine straight wins.
07:39All of them came by knockout.
07:40His opposition, though, to date has been entry-level.
07:43And all his fights have been short, in some cases really short, as little as nine seconds.
07:50Yubov has spent just under a total of 28 minutes in the ring as a pro.
07:53He has not had to fight beyond the third round.
07:56Tonight, he will step up the caliber of competition.
07:59So, Steve, let's go behind the numbers with Bakhtiar Yubov.
08:02Barry, we start with unlucky 13.
08:05Yubov's fought a total of only 13 rounds, and he's never been past three.
08:10Let's see how he responds if the bell rings for, say, round six.
08:13Easy targets.
08:14Yubov's carried out everybody he's fought, but he's faced only one winner in the combined
08:19record of his opponents, an ugly 19, 52, and 8.
08:23And Berlin to Brooklyn.
08:24Yubov's traveled a lot of miles to fight very few rounds.
08:27Contrast that with Robinson, who's fought most of his fights in North Carolina, where
08:31you can handpick your opponents.
08:33All right, so with that, let's meet the fighters in our first fight of the evening.
08:36We take you to the center of the ring for the first time tonight, and our ring announcer
08:39for tonight's festivities, Jeff Houston.
08:42Jeff?
08:49Ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening to you, and welcome one and all to the magnificent
08:55Casino del Sol in beautiful Tucson, Arizona, for Showbox, The New Generation, brought to
09:03you by Greg Cohen Promotions and Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Promotions, in association with David
09:10Schuster's Winner Take All Productions, Salita Promotions, and Showtime, presented by Corona
09:17Extra, La Cerveza Más Fina, and Maxim Group, Sound Investments, Solid Relationships.
09:24Our three judges, scoring at ringside, Fred Encinas, Steve Sandoval, Rocky Taylor, and our
09:33referee in charge of the action, Rocky Burke.
09:37This bout is scheduled for eight rounds of boxing in the Walter Waite Division.
09:42Introducing to you first, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing black, trimmed in red.
09:47His official weight, 143 and one-half pounds.
09:51His record stands at 16 wins, two defeats with one draw, seven wins coming by way of knockout.
09:58From Charlotte, North Carolina, here is Jared, the warrior, Robinson!
10:06And his opponent, across the ring, fighting out of the red corner, wearing red, trimmed in gold.
10:14His official weight, an identical 143 and one-half pounds.
10:18Undefeated as a professional, with nine wins, no defeats.
10:22All nine wins coming by way of knockout.
10:25From Akhubik, Kazakhstan, here is the undefeated Bakhteyar Bakka Bullitt, Yubo!
10:37Once again, our referee with our final instructions.
10:41Keep your guard up at all times.
10:49When I say break, take a step back without punching.
10:51In case of a knockdown, go to the furthest neutral corner.
10:53Don't come out of the neutral corner until I say box.
10:56Give me a good, clean fight.
10:57Good luck to both of you.
10:58Shake hands.
11:03We take a look at the numbers for these two.
11:05A seven-and-a-half reach advantage.
11:08It's about as big an advantage you'll ever see at this weight.
11:11And Robinson better make the most of it, because the inside will belong to Yubo!
11:16Rules here in Arizona, no standing eight, no three knockdown.
11:18Only the ref can stop the fight.
11:20He can't be saved by the battle in any round.
11:22And the accidental foul rule, if the fight stops before the end of four,
11:25it's a no decision.
11:25After that, we go to the card.
11:27Barry!
11:27All right, with that, we are set to go.
11:29Our first fight of the evening.
11:30And it's going to be no secret for Yubo!
11:32He wants to be right in Robinson's grill.
11:37That's where he does his damage.
11:38And he quoted a very famous boxer.
11:41He quoted Ivan Drago in saying...
11:44Well, that's been the story of Yubo's young career.
12:00And he's still right in range for Yubo, is Robinson.
12:03Good shot to the body by Yubo.
12:06And it doesn't help Robinson that this is a 16-foot ring.
12:09There's nowhere to hide.
12:10It is a trouble again.
12:13Yubo, very compact and short with his shot.
12:19Very heavy-handed puncher he sparred with our own Pauli Malignaggi.
12:23Pauli said, heaviest-handed puncher he's ever sparred with.
12:26Yeah, he said he's raw, but he's incredibly strong.
12:30I think Jared Robinson would agree with that assessment right now.
12:33Robinson is just not, so far, able to stay out of harm's way.
12:37Yubo is fighting exactly the fight he wants.
12:40Well, let's see if Yubo knows how to break down, Robinson.
12:42Another good shot.
12:43Backs Robinson up.
12:44There's an apricot in the left hand.
12:45Left hand in the body.
12:46Robinson needs to tighten up his defense and just not throw any punches.
12:53Just keep turning him.
12:56Let Yubo throw his best shots.
12:58He already lost this round.
13:00I wouldn't take any risk.
13:02He's just not able to get out of the way at all.
13:05He's not able to turn Yubo.
13:06Yubo's just right in his grill.
13:09Robinson can hold a little bit.
13:10He tried to over a few seconds ago.
13:14Burrell's right.
13:15His goal right now should be get out of the first round.
13:17I don't care how ugly it looks.
13:21He did get there by the right hand of his own.
13:23First punch that he's scored with.
13:25But you see the difference in power when Robinson punches compared to Yubo.
13:29Huge difference.
13:31Right hand up over the top again.
13:32Another right hand over the top.
13:34Uppercut of the right hand.
13:36Left hand of the body.
13:37Right hand of the head.
13:37Another right hand of the head.
13:40And Robinson gets in with a couple of right hands of his own.
13:43Well, I guarantee you, everybody Yubo's fought to this day has been knocked out by now.
13:48Absolutely.
13:48And Robinson's still here.
13:50I agree.
13:51I mean, we knew from the beginning.
13:53Robinson needed to wear the storm.
13:55Turns out to be a real big storm in the first round.
13:57Yes, I'll say.
13:58I said there was no El Nino.
13:59This is El Nino.
14:01Most definitely.
14:02That was a left hand.
14:05He wasn't even on balance.
14:06And he rocked Robinson.
14:07One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
14:16You okay?
14:18Bopped.
14:19So a huge first round by Yubo.
14:22Another good shot.
14:23And Robinson's ready to go again.
14:26And a left hand again.
14:28Final seconds of the round.
14:30And he somehow survived.
14:31That was about as lopsided around as I can remember.
14:45Deep breaths.
14:47Go to the boxing ball, all right?
14:49He has used that jab.
14:50Bop out, move.
14:51Bop out, step around.
14:52When you step to your right, don't look for the shot.
14:54Just slide out.
14:55All right?
14:55We need you to recover, okay?
14:57Just slide out, stay ready, all right?
14:59When you step over, do not look for the shot.
15:02Just keep turning.
15:03All right?
15:04Long round.
15:06Well, it came as no surprise that Yubo came out the way he did.
15:09And he throws that left hook and beats Robinson to the trigger.
15:12He was also throwing a left hook.
15:14Watch Robinson throw his own left hook.
15:16It doesn't land.
15:16It lands on the left shoulder of Yubo.
15:19Robinson's down.
15:20And then later in the round, referee Rocky Burke rules that the ropes kept Robinson from falling.
15:27So that's a knockdown.
15:28It's a 10-7 round.
15:29For Yubo.
15:32So round two.
15:34And they told Robinson in his corner, just stay out of the way.
15:38Don't even worry about punching.
15:40But we know about Robinson.
15:42Oh, he's a huge shot.
15:45This guy could hit.
15:47Yeah.
15:48I'll say he could hit.
15:49Six, seven, eight.
15:52You okay?
15:54Box.
15:55Well, it will not take much.
15:56His legs are pretty shot, I think.
15:58Another chopping right hand, left hand, right hand again.
16:01Uppercut with a left hand.
16:03Missed with a right hand.
16:05Normally, I'd say Yubo needs to go to the body.
16:07But Robinson's punching back, opening himself up to the head.
16:10So Yubo doesn't have to go to the body.
16:12It'll take just one punch.
16:13Robinson's legs are gone.
16:18There's a left hand.
16:20Robinson has to hold on.
16:22He needs to impose his body on him.
16:24Walk him through.
16:25He's not holding.
16:26He's not holding, Raul.
16:27He's not holding.
16:28That's the problem.
16:29Yeah, look at him.
16:30He's trying to fight back, stay close, but it's not working.
16:33Taking too many risks, especially early in the fight.
16:35We know that he knows this guy is powerful.
16:38They haven't gone past three rounds.
16:40Oh.
16:41Crashing right hand.
16:43Robinson has gone to rounds.
16:44He's gone ten rounds twice.
16:46And we know how tough Robinson is when he got knocked out of the ring on Showbox by Amira Maaf
16:50and climbed back into the ring.
16:51Yes.
16:52That was incredible.
16:52I remember that.
16:53Big right hand again, a left hand behind it.
16:59And Robinson does get there with four punches, but...
17:03Yuboff just kind of walked right through him.
17:10Well, as ridiculously one-sided as this is, this is actually a little bit of a test for Yuboff
17:14because Robinson is still there.
17:16Maybe Yuboff punches himself out.
17:18He's very inexperienced.
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:20Yes.
17:20Get up, man!
17:21Get up!
17:22Get up!
17:23Come on!
17:24You guys have been throwing some big bombs.
17:25Yeah, but an uppercut by Yuboff and then a left hand behind it.
17:29Right!
17:29Step back!
17:32Robinson's showing some grit.
17:33I'll say that.
17:35Get the hand up!
17:36Keep it high!
17:37Keep it high!
17:37Got to keep that jab on him and push him back.
17:40I don't think Yuboff could fight going back.
17:42Let's call him if he can push him back.
17:44Go!
17:44Go!
17:45Go!
17:45Go!
17:45Go!
17:47That's how he did get Yuboff turned, but Yuboff comes right back with two left hands.
17:51But as you notice now, Yuboff is swinging a little bit wild now.
17:55Yeah, wild.
17:55Shots is not as short now.
17:57That's where Robinson should capitalize it.
18:00Just throws down the middle, down the pipe.
18:02One, two.
18:03Robinson actually has connected to the number of punches in his round.
18:07Big left hand again.
18:08Robinson covers up.
18:10Another left hand by Yuboff.
18:11And another left hand.
18:13And Robinson again has to get out of there.
18:16You're drinking it now.
18:19Robinson can't try to trade punches.
18:21He can't win that kind of fight, obviously.
18:25Right!
18:26Step back!
18:27But I think your point is very well taken, Steve.
18:29I mean, this could be a real cut for Yuboff.
18:31He's got two rounds.
18:32He's given the guy everything that he has, and he's still there.
18:35He's still there.
18:36He's still there.
18:37He's still there.
18:38He's still there.
18:40Come on, come on, come on.
18:41Come on.
18:42Come on.
18:44Talk to him.
18:45Good?
18:46Good?
18:47There we go.
18:48Good.
18:49Deep breath.
18:50Deep breath.
18:51Let me get something here.
18:52Right here.
18:53He got a little net up there.
18:54Eugene, tell him, look.
18:57Baka.
18:58Cut the ring.
19:02He's moving to his right.
19:03Move to your left.
19:04It's getting tough to remember all the knockdowns.
19:10Look at that right hand.
19:12Wow, that was flush, and the left hook that followed
19:14was just clean up.
19:16Third time in two rounds, Robinson down.
19:20Beautiful shot.
19:22I'm impressed with U-Boss punching,
19:23not just his power, but when he doesn't get too wide,
19:27his technique is pretty good.
19:28So this is round three.
19:37U-Boss again on the left hand.
19:38He is so heavy-handed.
19:41Three jabs from Robinson.
19:43Another big left hand from U-Boss, and another.
19:46And another.
19:47See that? That's not good.
19:48Robinson keeps back in strength.
19:50Back up, you know, and he gets caught with a wild shot.
19:53Two right hands, another left hand.
19:55He's taking a lot of punishment, Robinson.
19:57And another left hand.
20:00Hey, step back.
20:02If Robinson can just hang in there,
20:05and back up, yeah, U-Boss' punch is getting very wide.
20:08Yeah, he looks to me like he's losing his form a little bit, U-Boss.
20:12And Robinson needs to back up at an angle,
20:14and that's great.
20:15Back up.
20:17Like he's doing right there.
20:18He's back up at an angle, giving the shoulder.
20:20Two good shots again.
20:21Another left hand, left of the body.
20:23Two right to the head.
20:24That's about it.
20:25It's over.
20:27Too much.
20:31Yeah, that was pretty impressive.
20:33Yeah!
20:33I mean, this guy's...
20:35Robinson's fighting way better out than Susan,
20:37and, you know, he's gone the distance many times,
20:39and look at this guy.
20:40Oh, he's got to dance.
20:41Oh, I like that.
20:42Wow.
20:42Get up there, Barry.
20:52Go, come on.
20:53He needs a partner.
20:54Yeah, I've already done that today.
20:55He said it, you know, when he was growing up in Kazakhstan.
20:57This was his dream, to come fight here in the United States on Showtime.
21:02Look at him.
21:02He's definitely putting on a show.
21:04Oh, Phyllis Diller is smiling somewhere.
21:08Let me tell you, if I'm sitting at home, I don't know this guy from Adam.
21:12He gets in the ring.
21:12He does what he did.
21:13I have a new favorite young welterweight to watch.
21:15No, absolutely.
21:16I want to see him again.
21:17Absolutely.
21:17I want to see him again.
21:18I want to see him again tonight.
21:19I'm sure he can.
21:21I'm sure you can do it.
21:22Yeah.
21:23I mean, Robinson took everything he had.
21:26He's a very engaging guy when we sat and talked to him.
21:28You both.
21:33He had a real success story.
21:34Paid his way from Kazakhstan to Germany,
21:38and then had to pay just to get fights in Germany.
21:41He didn't make any money.
21:42Slept anywhere he could for as cheap as he could.
21:45He lives in Brooklyn, trained by Neil Malarik,
21:49who's a top trainer who had Louis Colazzo among others.
21:52So this is the guy.
21:53Boy, the Russians have taken over.
21:56The firefighters from the former Soviet Union
21:58have taken over the New York boxing scene.
21:59This is yet another one.
22:01We've seen so many of them on showbots.
22:02And one more impressive than the next,
22:04that's the Kazakhstan flag.
22:05Let's go to the center of the ring and Jeff Houston.
22:13Ladies and gentlemen,
22:14our referee in charge, Rocky Burke,
22:16steps in and calls a stop to the bout
22:18at 56 seconds, round number three.
22:20Your winner by technical knockout
22:23and still undefeated,
22:25from Kazakhstan,
22:27Bakhtiar Bakabula,
22:30Yubo!
22:36Yubo, Gena, Golovkin.
22:39That's right.
22:39He mentioned Golovkin.
22:40They grew up together,
22:41so they know each other very well.
22:42Here are the numbers, Steve.
22:43Well, the first number that comes to mind there
22:46is the jabs.
22:48Yubo says,
22:48I don't need no stinking jabs.
22:50But the power connects 57%.
22:52I don't think I've ever seen a fighter
22:54fight two-plus rounds,
22:56not land a single jab
22:57among his total punches.
22:59And he didn't go to the body.
23:00Now, again,
23:01I don't think he needed to
23:02because Robinson was making himself so available.
23:05Beautiful left hook.
23:07Beat Robinson to the trigger.
23:09See, Raul was totally correct.
23:11In the first round,
23:12Yubo's punches were much shorter,
23:14and he got a couple of knockdowns out of it.
23:16Round two,
23:17it was the right hand that was featured.
23:18Wow, that is some power.
23:21That is just natural power.
23:25And then in the third round,
23:26Robinson in this tiny, tiny ring,
23:29right where he doesn't belong,
23:30against the ropes.
23:31And Yubo's showing a little bit of maturity there,
23:33knowing that if he just keeps punching,
23:35even with baby shots,
23:36the ref will stop it,
23:37and the ref did stop it.
23:38Yeah, complete performance for Yubo.
23:40I mean, he did everything that could be expected of him.
23:42And he even had to go as far as he's ever gone before.
23:45That was into the third round.
23:47Very happy guy.
23:48You're going to definitely see this guy again.
23:50We move now to our second fight of the night here.
