Edwin Rosario takes on Roberto Garcia in a Jr. Welterweight bout on HBO Boxing
Transcript
00:00Rosario giving away 10 years to Roberto Garcia, but Rosario a very, very promising boxer.
00:06Jose Torres has talked about him a great deal. You like him a lot, Jose.
00:09Yes, he's a very good boxer and a very smart boxer.
00:12You can look at some of the numbers on these two. They are comparable.
00:15Garcia a couple of inches taller and a couple of pounds heavier,
00:18but Rosario a very promising contender here.
00:24Rosario has an advantage in his age. He's only 18 years old.
00:28The other man is 28.
00:30The other fighter is 28 years old.
00:36Rosario in the dark trunks, Garcia in the white trunks.
00:48Rosario undefeated as a professional.
00:55I think Jose Torres taught Rosario. He boxes just like him.
00:59He's a good boxer.
01:01Are you sure you're not training him on the side?
01:10First round here, and again, this is the usual feeling out process,
01:13especially in the case of a young fighter, right-hand lead by Rosario.
01:17Comes up a little bit short.
01:17Rosario almost resembles Benitez in that side-to-side action. That's what Benitez does.
01:31Left and right, left and right, and the piston-type, his arms go in his piston-type motion.
01:35He, too, looks very poised for someone who is relatively inexperienced as a professional.
01:42Well, he is the aggressive. There's no question about that. The other guy's on the bison.
01:48And an uppercut also a little bit short. First round, no damage so far.
01:52There's the left hand that scores by Rosario on the chin of Garcia.
01:57Garcia also carries his head very high. He was hit with a left hook head, and his head was very, very high.
02:02See how he steps back with his head going back?
02:08Rosario showing good ability to counterpunch there, as Garcia did score on him.
02:11A little bit of a little mantilla.
02:12A little while right there.
02:12And this is, three or four punches miss on the back of Garcia, thrown by Rosario.
02:21Garcia will bend forward and then come up almost straight up with his Adam's apple showing.
02:27First round here, both fighters missing to a certain degree here.
02:39He just committed the cardinal sin in boxing by leading with a right hand.
02:51Rosario again, missing the left hand.
02:53Looping, wild right hand by Garcia.
02:55This is not what I'm putting in half.
02:57I like the way Rosario bobs and weaves.
03:07Left hand did score on the chest of Edward Rosario.
03:11Rosario comes back with the left hand of his own.
03:13Rosario pressing the action here.
03:14Garcia, his bicycles, we come to the end of round one.
03:19Let's take a look at Edward Rosario now.
03:21Another member of Jimmy Jacobs' stable.
03:26Another unbeaten member.
03:27And someone who many boxing observers feel would be reckoned with in the future.
03:41He's saying to jab more, to jab more, to keep the pressure.
03:45But the kid is a slow starter.
03:49He's famous for that.
03:52He's won 19 of his 20 victories by knockouts.
03:58But the last time we saw him was on the Hearns Leonard card.
04:03And that was the only decision on his record.
04:07And he did come out in the first round looking a little bit anxious to get a knockout in Las Vegas.
04:14It's hard to listen to Melisiaca, his trainer, because he stoners a lot.
04:19He does.
04:22So, Edward Rosario comes out to meet Roberto Garcia for round two and again forces the action.
04:28Right now, there's a left hand and a right hand right behind him that scores.
04:31Garcia comes back with a right hand of his own as the pace picks up here early in round two.
04:35Rosario has the type of stance where he'd much rather throw a left hook.
04:43His jabs are not really crisp and strong.
04:46He's a left hooker.
04:48Garcia's been very wild with his punches so far.
04:52You're not going to have any chance of beating a fight of the caliber of Edwin Rosario
04:55if you don't start straightening some of those punches out.
05:00Rosario, too, a little bit wild through the first round and a half here.
05:03It appears to me that Garcia really knows the strength that this young man has
05:11and he's on the retreat at all times.
05:24Again, Garcia on his bicycle and Rosario just continues to pursue it.
05:29And another wild right hand that didn't have anything on it.
05:32He even had it to score.
05:33Garcia doesn't want to engage him because he knows that this kid can hit pretty hard.
05:47There's a right hand that did score on the top of the head.
05:50Another left hand whistles above the head.
05:51There we go.
05:52Left hand right on the button by Edwin Rosario.
05:55And that is all.
06:04And that was a smashing left hand right to the nose, it looked like, of Garcia.
06:10Well, you have to say, he might have missed a couple of punches early on.
06:17He did not miss that combination.
06:20That was...
06:20He was such a hard left hook.
06:24Punch landing right on the button.
06:35And Garcia now being helped to his feet.
06:41They'll sit him down, take no chances.
06:43You look at a smiling Edwin Rosario, smiling with good reason.
06:47And when he finally caught up with Garcia, it didn't last long.
06:50That is true.
06:52That was a beautifully executed punch.
06:54Great press.
06:55All right, right now, let's go up to Jimmy Lennon, the official decision.
07:01Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of the knockout.
07:03One minute, 45 seconds.
07:06In round number two.
07:08And the winner by knockout,
07:12El Puerto Riqueno, Edwin Rosario.
07:17El Puerto Riqueno.
