Marvelous Marvin Hagler defends his Middleweight title against Mustafa Hamsho in a rematch in the main event of HBO Boxing.
Transcript
00:00The first time I fought you, I ripped you apart.
00:08Uppercut, scores by Marvin Hagler, and another right hand to the face, and the eyes continue to bleed, and this will stop my hands off.
00:14I just want to show it to the people like how tough I am. It never hurt me.
00:18Don't look there, look at me!
00:20If you want me to stop, I don't stop. If you want me to stop, I'm going to stop it.
00:23Well, the God damn it's the way.
00:25And another right hand, and yet another.
00:27Combinates with the punches by the champion, tries to go down there, comes up to the right hand center.
00:32I've never liked the guy before, and I still don't like him.
00:35By him learning how to speak English better, he's only putting his foot in his mouth.
00:39Because the more he talks, the more I'm willing to give him a smack.
00:43Last fight, I'll grab you, he don't beat me, I beat myself to him.
00:46Because when I fought him the first time, I fought hard by Spike.
00:49This time it's going to be different.
00:51Hamso is against the one, sets another right hand, and an uppercut.
00:54And now, after three long years, the rematch.
01:01It is a city which has always symbolized hope and prosperity in a free world, the heartbeat of international trade, and throughout history, the most prestigious arena for boxing's brightest stars.
01:23That tradition continues as live from Madison Square Garden in New York City, HBO Sports presents World Championship Boxing.
01:33And now the main event, the undisputed middleweight champion of the world, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, takes on number one contender, Mustafa Hamshow, in a scheduled 15-round title fight.
01:44The excitement's beginning to build as this historic landmark of boxing's illustrious past counts down the minutes to yet another championship fight.
01:54I'm Barry Tompkins with Ray Leonard and Larry Merchant.
01:56We're at the Garden, and we're looking forward to a replay of a fight, really, that was so lopsided in Chicago a couple of years ago.
02:02That between marvelous Marvin Hagler, the middleweight champion of the world, and Mustafa Hamshow.
02:07Now, Ray, they tell us we're going to see a different Mustafa Hamshow this year, but can the Leopard change his spots?
02:13I want to see that. I doubt very seriously, bud, but they can add on.
02:16He can become more defensive and not be, remain a stationary target.
02:20Marvin Hagler, of course, loves a guy who comes right at him, and that's exactly what Hamshow did the last time.
02:24But your feeling really is that we're going to see pretty much the same fight.
02:27The same will be pretty much a replay, but we may see a much more aggressive and tougher Hamshow.
02:32People are saying that Marvin Hagler has lost a little bit. What do you think?
02:35I doubt very seriously. This man sitting here, Thomas Harris, Hagler wants him. He's going to look good.
02:40Well, over the years, we've gotten to know marvelous Marvin Hagler here on HBO, but, you know, he's really a part of a team.
02:46A team that started with a dream of two brothers back in Brockton, Massachusetts.
02:54The modern athlete needs support. Professional football, baseball, and basketball players have well-dressed agents and a bevy of specialized coaches.
03:03But since the days of John L. Sullivan, boxing has remained an art whose skills are steeped in old, sweaty gyms.
03:10There are no three-piece suits at the negotiating table and no computerized scouting reports.
03:15Only everyday people, the trainer and manager.
03:18Through years of loyalty and dedication, they dream of molding a champion.
03:23Brothers Pat and Goody Petronelli grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts.
03:28In the early 60s, after serving in the military, they decided to turn a love for boxing into their livelihood.
03:34They had hoped another native of Brockton would join them.
03:37Brother Pat and I are going to open a gym in Brockton. I said, go into construction and open up a gym.
03:42He says, how about me going in with you?
03:46I said, man, I love that. That'd be great, Brockton.
03:49And we had a lot of beautiful ideas about running this huge gymnasium in Brockton called the Marciano Gym.
03:55Well, as you know the story, he got in that accident and got killed.
04:01Then my brother and I went without him.
04:04So the old Petronelli gym was born.
04:07A healthy stable of fighters came and went.
04:10But then a quiet teenager from the ghettos of Newark arrived.
04:14I'm there working with the fighters that are generally doing.
04:17He just sat there.
04:18Came in the next day, he sat down and he was watching.
04:21So I was in the ring one day and I just looked over at him.
04:24I said, hey kid, you want to learn how to fight?
04:26And all I needed was a good teacher and somebody to show me what to do with these, you know.
04:31And he did his homework well. He really did.
04:33What I taught him in there, he'd come back in again.
04:35It seemed like he picked up a lot quicker than the other kids.
04:38He says, mine is made up what he wants to be.
04:41He'd get in the back room when he'd sign little autographs from the future middleweight champion of the world.
04:47And he'd sign it as a kid, 16 year old kid.
04:51In 1980, that dream came true as marvelous Marvin Hackler savagely beat middleweight champion Alan Minter.
04:57Goody, the trainer, and Pat, the manager, had a world champion.
05:00The triangle, as they like to be called, had tougher decisions ahead.
05:03It's tough to win the title, tougher still to hold it.
05:06Think of the trainer as a head coach.
05:08He runs a fighter through conditioning programs and strategy sessions.
05:12You can't learn from hitting any bad gloves.
05:14It's the same thing as just punching a bag where a bag don't hit back.
05:17This guy's got regular gloves on just like myself.
05:20I pick out these so-called weak points and strong points and I train Marvin specifically for it.
05:25The guy may be a hooker or he may be overhand rights or whatever.
05:29We train for these particular fighters.
05:31How to counter these different punches, how to slip these different punches.
05:35And I think that's important.
05:37I'm coming at you this way.
05:39Bring him up inside.
05:40He gets his body and his mind in the same condition the same way that I do.
05:43He psychs himself up for this fighter the same way that I do.
05:47When I don't like Mustafa Hampshire, he don't like Mustafa Hampshire.
05:50When I'm running, he's running just as hard as I am.
05:53And there's one thing that's great to his advantage is that I can't cheat if he's there with me.
05:57And in order to make it, you're going to have to go through these big walls.
06:01You're going to have to learn.
06:02You're going to have to get knocked down in order to learn how to get back up and to keep striving.
06:06On the night of a fight, both men work the critical fourth minute of the round.
06:10The corner work can win or lose a fight.
06:13See what he's doing.
06:14All right.
06:15He's trying to throw that straight right hand.
06:16Okay?
06:17So when you throw that jab, when he bends over, come up with that upper guy.
06:20But if I'm making a mistake, I know that I have the confidence that he's going to point it out to me.
06:25Now, don't get this fucking punch.
06:26Just beat him to the punch.
06:27Double up that jab.
06:28Quick punch.
06:29That's all I want you to do.
06:30I don't have to holler at him or slap his face like a lot of guys do because we don't need this.
06:34Yeah.
06:35We're well organized in the corner because we're prepared.
06:37I'm getting too discouraged now, my dear.
06:39Hey, I'm just waiting for you.
06:40Hold on.
06:41I'm stuck.
06:42Up because we're more good on this guy, Marvin.
06:43Yes, sir.
06:44You slip on your hook, smoke the upper guy.
06:45Get that snap and speed going.
06:47Marvin's fighting in the ring.
06:48My brother and I lean over.
06:49Two heads are better than one.
06:51He'll say, Pat, what do you think?
06:52And I'll say, jeez, I think this and that.
06:54And he comes back to that corner.
06:56I tell you, you know, he gets the right answers.
06:59So far, that success has been to the tune of about 15 million years.
07:03About 15 million dollars in nine title defenses.
07:06But it should be noted that all has not been rosy.
07:09Lawyer Steve Wainwright was axed from the camp and subsequently sued the Petronelli's for damages.
07:14Pat gives this advice to other camps.
07:17Your fighter has to have faith in his people.
07:20Not be suspicious of his people.
07:22100% faith.
07:23And he's going to give you 100%.
07:25And you have to give your fighter 100%.
07:27I'm able to open up to them and they're still very honest to me.
07:30And I love them, you know, like a father.
07:34And I think that I asked them just one thing and that's not to hurt me.
07:39And not to give me any promises.
07:42You know, you just open up the door.
07:44Let me do it myself.
07:46Every athlete needs good coaching.
07:48The accomplishments of marvelous Marvin Hagler would not have surfaced without these two very special brothers.
07:54Our lifestyle hasn't changed all that much.
07:56It's a dream that comes true and we're happy with it.
07:58And we have our dreams.
08:00To this day, I enjoy what I'm doing.
08:03We're this triangle.
08:04We have faith in each other all the way.
08:05We still have faith in each other.
08:07So Marvin is doing fine and we'll still be together.
08:10And like we started, we're friends then, we're friends afterwards.
08:14And we have a nice team.
08:16What is so beautiful about this family is that success does not spoil the bonds of friendship and love.
08:22Pat and Goody Petronelli should remain the trustworthy mentors of a very gifted athlete.
08:27This chain may never break.
08:29And all three can boast of a stake in that glorious word, champion.
08:35So an interesting look at Team Hagler.
08:37And coming up, the championship for the middleweight title between marvelous Marvin Hagler and the challenger, Mustafa Hampshire.
08:45He lost it the last time. He hoped for better this time.
08:49But as always, we get a unique look at just about every championship fight we do here on HBO.
08:53It comes from none other than our resident maven, Larry Merchant.
08:57Larry.
08:58Marvin Hagler has a dilemma, but it's a positive dilemma.
09:03He always has to prove himself.
09:06And he's used that despite the fact that he's rich and famous and a champion to keep the fire in his belly burning.
09:13When he was a contender, they said he wouldn't be box office.
09:17Wrong.
09:18When he was a champion, they said he couldn't handle pressure.
09:21Wrong.
09:22And Mustafa Hancho has the scars to prove it.
09:25Then it was said that he dominated the middleweight division so much that it was bad for boxing.
09:29Wrong.
09:30Can you imagine what that division would have been like in recent years without him?
09:34And now they're saying that he's in decline.
09:37He's gone from invincibility to vulnerability.
09:41And that's what we're here to find out tonight.
09:43Whether that's wrong.
09:45If, indeed, he doesn't fight as fiercely as he looks anymore, we might have a fight tonight.
09:52Because Mustafa Hancho has traveled a long, hard road to get back in the ring with a guy who gave him a terrible beating.
09:59Either he's crazy or dangerous.
10:02Only in America could such a dream come true.
10:15Ten years ago, Mustafa Hancho made his way to the United States with only one thing in mind.
10:20To be champion of the world.
10:22He left his home in Latika, Syria, and worked on a Greek cargo ship at this dock in Brooklyn, New York.
10:28One day, with only $20 in his pocket and unable to speak a word of English, he left the ship and never returned.
10:35He soon found his way to Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, to an area rich in Arabic flavor.
10:55I do walk every day from here to Atlantic Avenue.
10:58I met a lot of guys.
11:00I met Sammy.
11:01He's my best friend now.
11:03I call him cousin.
11:04Sammy turned out to be much more than Mustafa's first true friend in America.
11:10It was he who steered Mustafa to the Gramercy Park gym to pursue his boxing career.
11:15This was where he met Paddy Flood, a robust character who had spent a lifetime in boxing, hoping one day to develop his own champion.
11:24Like father and son, the two bonded together almost as one.
11:31I tell you, like a family.
11:33Me and him was like a family.
11:34I go eat in his house.
11:36I call his wife, mother.
11:38I call his daughter, sister, you know.
11:40Like, we all was like really family with me and me.
11:44Like father and son or two brothers or older brothers.
11:47The two spent so much time together that sometimes Mustafa's love for the old country
11:53would almost drive Paddy crazy.
11:59Every time we go in the car, I just put my table, music table, and I start thinking Arabic.
12:06So he said, hey.
12:07He start calling off.
12:08He's cursing me.
12:10And he says, stop the car.
12:11I want to work.
12:12He said, oh, yeah.
12:14I want to joke with him.
12:15I put the music on.
12:16I put it loud.
12:17You know, he go crazy.
12:18It's crazy.
12:19In 1981, after six years together, Paddy and Mustafa were on the verge of reaching their
12:25long shared goal.
12:26A shot at the championship of the world.
12:29For the undisputed world's middleweight championship, Mustafa Hamshio.
12:37Hamshio.
12:38His opponent, the undisputed middleweight champion of the world, Marvin Hagler.
12:44Hagler is really being like a surgeon and Hamshio has taken it off.
12:53And Hamshio still does not appear to be hurt.
12:55He has taken an awful lot of punishment from the champion.
12:57No, no.
12:58Stop it.
12:59Then you go and go and knock him out this round and I'm going to stop it.
13:03Stop it.
13:04No.
13:05Very, very damaging round.
13:08Hamshio's corner is up and they are saying, that's it.
13:11That's all.
13:12Braverman is saying, stop it.
13:13The referee does so.
13:15The fight is over.
13:16And Marvin Hagler has retained his undisputed middleweight championship of the world.
13:22Mustafa may have lost the fight in the ring, but in his heart was more than a winner.
13:27Although Hagler left Hamshio in need of 55 stitches, the proud Syrian never took a step
13:32backward.
13:33But a year and a half later, Mustafa was dealt the worst blow of his life.
13:37Paddy Flood, his confidant, died of a stroke at the age of 48.
13:42Mustafa was devastated.
13:44When I first, like, when I first get the call about him, you know, I can't believe it,
13:49you know, because I think a couple hours before I find, I was talking to him.
13:55We laugh, we make fun about Larry Holm.
13:58He, he supposed, when he fought the Italian guy, and he, like, you know, Flood, he makes
14:03jokes about everything.
14:05So I wasn't, I wasn't in my house, and he's why she called me, you know.
14:10I just, my legs give up, and I go to the hospital.
14:16I don't want to remember the way I saw him, you know.
14:20Four months later, Mustafa beat Wilfred Benitez with Paddy's initials inscribed on his trunks.
14:25He had returned to boxing, not only for a dream that began on a Greek ship years ago, but
14:29in memory of his dearest friend, Paddy Flood.
14:33I wish Paddy's dream between me and him, both of us to be there when he wins the championship.
14:39Because when I fought him, first time I fought hard, that's fighting.
14:42This time it's going to be different, and Paddy will be in my corner,
14:46till I quit, I think, till I'll be retired from boxing.
14:49You can't believe 10 years ago, I was bent and cleaned the ship, and today where I am, you know.
14:55Living in America is great, you know.
14:57For Mustafa Hamshou, America's the only place where such a dream could come true.
15:04A young Syrian's quest, which began years ago on this very dock, may finally become reality.
15:10A reality that lies just a few miles away.
15:18And here is that reality as Mustafa Hamshou makes his way out of his dressing room
15:23and toward the ring here at Madison Square Garden.
15:25This crowd at the Garden, really a vintage kind of crowd.
15:28They react positively, negatively.
15:30They love it if you do a good job, if you put on a good performance,
15:33as did both the combatants in the fight that you saw a few moments ago,
15:36Sean Mannion and the new champion, Mike McCallum.
15:38And they hate it if you dog it.
15:40Well, this man, you know, is not going to dog it.
15:42Last time he said simply, Hagler didn't beat me, I beat myself.
15:45He said, I wanted to show the people how tough I was, and he cut me up.
15:48We've talked on numerous occasions now about are we going to see a different Mustafa Hamshou,
15:52general consensus of opinion is no.
15:55Unless, of course, you ask the people who are closest to him.
15:58They said he held his head too high last time.
16:00Now he's burying his head more.
16:02He's bobbing more.
16:03He's weaving more.
16:04He'll throw more hooks.
16:05He never did that before.
16:06Well, here he comes, draped the Nasirian flag into the ring.
16:10Here's a look at Mustafa Hamshou's record 38, the two losses.
16:22He has two draws, 23 knockouts.
16:24He'll be in Marvin Hagler's face.
16:26No question about that.
16:27Since the loss to Marvin Hagler, he's won six straight.
16:30He beat Curtis Parker, beat Gil Rosario on two occasions, beat Bobby Chas.
16:35That was a good win for him.
16:37Handled Wilfred Benitez, and in a two-knit fight, he beat Rocky Shakespeare.
16:42So he's on a roll.
16:43Well, he looks psyched up to me.
16:45I think he's really motivated.
16:46He wants to win, and win bad, Barry.
16:49And as is marvelous Marvin Hagler's want, he will let his man stay in the ring a little bit and just think about it.
17:04Larry, what do you think about his victories over Chas and Benitez?
17:08Is it a new fighter that we're seeing?
17:10It's hard to say he just overpowered those fighters.
17:14The way he overpowered Benitez shocked a lot of people.
17:17And it indicated that he is the worthy number one contender.
17:21A lot of guys lose a fight.
17:22They want to come back six months, eight months later and fight the guy.
17:26But this guy did it the hard way.
17:28He went out there.
17:29He fought for three years.
17:30He's a real professional.
17:32You have to admire that in him.
17:34He's fighting for the biggest person of his life tonight for $150,000.
17:39And he's using just about everything he can to get himself inspired.
17:44He's got the flag of his country.
17:46He's wearing a robe made by the wife of the late Patty Flood, who was his manager.
17:55He said, in fact, when he beat Benitez, that Patty Flood was with him.
17:59He said, I saw him in front of me.
18:00He was pushing me.
18:01He was saying, don't let him out of the corner.
18:03Keep your punches down.
18:05Punch to the body.
18:06Well, that's what he did.
18:07And he won.
18:08And whether or not he can do that against marvelous Marvin Hagler tonight remains to be seen.
18:12It wasn't just a victory for Marvin Hagler the last time these two saw each other in Chicago.
18:17It was a slaughter.
18:18And I think that's a fair way to describe it.
18:20Hampshire had not won a round on any of the judges' cards.
18:24We talked about the 55 stitches.
18:26It was just a completely one-sided fight.
18:29I think we ought to remember that the conventional wisdom at the time is that Hagler couldn't handle pressure
18:35because of his fight with Vito Antifermo in which there was a draw.
18:39And he was advised to go straight at Hagler.
18:43Now, perhaps he won't be that reckless and that foolish as much tonight,
18:48but it remains to be seen if he has any other weapons if he doesn't have to fight the best way he can
18:54and what got him here, which is that kind of pressure or tactics.
18:59And marvelous Marvin Hagler comes under the HBO Sports banner and makes his way toward the ring.
19:05You saw 34 victories in a row for Marvin Hagler since way back in 1976.
19:10I'll give you a couple of names that will be trivia questions at some point in time.
19:14Boogaloo Watts and Willie the Worm Monroe.
19:17Those are the only two people to beat Marvin Hagler.
19:19A couple of tough Philadelphia guys in Philadelphia.
19:22And later Marvin Hagler reversed those decisions with knockouts.
19:27And they came within two months of one another.
19:32Boogaloo Watts winning in January and then Willie Monroe winning in March.
19:37Since that time, he's unscathed.
19:39This, the tenth title defense, there are the numbers on marvelous Marvin Hagler.
19:4449 knockouts even though he doesn't really consider himself a knockout puncher.
19:48Right now, we'll look at the tail of the tape and see how these two match up against one another.
19:58As Hagler, one thing always comes into the ring very warm.
20:01That's something that Sugar Ray Leonard has talked about on numerous occasions here.
20:04Here's a look at how they match up and they match up remarkably comparably.
20:08Statistically.
20:09Statistically.
20:10Statistically.
20:11And that, of course, may be the key point of this entire evening.
20:15So, it's marvelous Marvin Hagler against Mustafa Hamshel.
20:19Here's a look at the opponents who they have faced in common.
20:22And the results are also pretty much in common.
20:25Alan Minter, of course, marvelous Marvin Hagler won his fight with Alan Minter to win the title.
20:30He beat Wilfred Sipion.
20:31Hamshel won over Sipion under disqualification.
20:33Right now, we'll go to the ring announcer Michael Buffer for the pre-fight festivities.
20:37Michael.
20:42Ladies and gentlemen, will everyone please rise for the Syrian National Anthem.

26:43At 159 and one half pounds
26:47His record
26:4959 victories
26:51Only 2 losses and 2 draws
26:53Only 2 losses and 2 draws
26:5549 by knockout
26:59From Brockton, Massachusetts
27:01The undisputed middleweight champion of the world
27:07Marvelous Marvin Heidler
27:11Arthur McCanty the referee with the instructions
27:29Good evening
27:31Marvin and Hampshire
27:33You both received instructions
27:35We expect you to obey these instructions
27:39And I will be here to enforce them
27:41Shake hands now
27:43Return to your corners to await the starting bell
27:45Good luck
27:47And as is the custom with Marvelous Marvin Hagler
27:50It is not shake hands
27:52He says I only have one thing in mind
27:55When I get out there
27:57He says get him the hell out of there
27:58And then shake hands
28:00Here's a look at Mustafa Hamshel
28:03He looks businesslike
28:05He was staring at Marvin Hagler
28:07During the pre-fight ceremonies
28:09Which here everyone hopes
28:11Went longer than the fight will
28:13There will not be a fill-out process
28:15Quite naturally Hamshel
28:16Is going to go straight for Marvin
28:18And try to go to work
28:22Hamshel's tough
28:23No question about it
28:24And this fight will be a good indication
28:26As to whether or not
28:28Marvelous Marvin Hagler
28:29Has slipped at all
28:30That was a good right hook by Hamshel
28:32That land
28:33It was a pretty good push too
28:34Come on Tony
28:36Hamshel be decked in green trunks
28:38On one leg
28:39It says Mustafa Hamshel
28:40On the other
28:41Patty Flood
28:42They were inseparable
28:43You mentioned earlier that
28:56Marvelous Marvin Hagler
28:57In that first fight
28:58Did not lose a round
28:59So right from the opening bell
29:01He took charge
29:02Well, right from the very beginning
29:04He dictated the pace of the fight
29:06But here I think he really wants to fill his man out
29:09And see a weakness
29:11And Hagler looks at Arthur McCantey for help
29:14As he was complaining that Hamshel held him
29:17Hagler has been very careful there
29:19As far as he is
29:20But although it was not intentional
29:22Just the way that Hamshel
29:24His style is
29:25Yeah, that is one thing to keep in mind
29:27Even though Mustafa Hamshel
29:29Had 55 stitches from cuts inflicted
29:31By marvelous Marvin Hagler
29:32In that first fight in Chicago
29:34Hagler himself was cut from a butt
29:36In the first round
29:37You know, there was a big question
29:39Whether or not Hamshel has changed his style
29:41And he is
29:42And what I see
29:43He's moving
29:44He's moving his head
29:45He's not being a stationary target
29:47Well, that's what they said
29:48That he bobbed and weaved a lot more now
29:50And he will throw hooks
29:51Which he didn't throw too many of in the past
29:53I think what Hamshel's driving force is
29:55Not only just to win the title
29:56But to do it for Patti Fleur
29:58Who he loved dearly
30:00But really could be a factor in this fight
30:03And with these two styles
30:04Contrasting though they are
30:06They really do become
30:08That much more conceivable
30:13If I'm not mistaken
30:14But it seems to be a trickle of blood already
30:16On the left eyebrow
30:18Of Mustafa Hamshel
30:19So we will watch that
30:23And there is a little bit of blood
30:25At least it shows actually
30:26On the belt of the trunks
30:27Of Marvin Hagler
30:28And there Hagler is saying
30:29It was a butt
30:30They just collateral heads
30:31We'll try to watch that
30:32If we can
30:33And Hagler is starting to get really frustrated
30:36Because he felt
30:37He felt that it was intentional
30:39Hagler talking to his man
30:40Telling him
30:41Telling him
30:42Come on
30:47And there is blood
30:48It appears to be
30:49Above the left eye
30:51Right in about the brow
30:54Alongside the bridge of the nose
30:56That was a beautiful right hook
30:58Once again by Hamshel
31:00And Hagler covers up
31:01Watch the head
31:03And Hagler tells Arthur McCantey
31:05That again
31:06That was the intentional head
31:07By Hamshel
31:10And Arthur McCantey
31:12Steps in there
31:13We know that Hamshel already has a cut over his brow
31:29This fight could come down to the question of how much blood do the referee Arthur McCantey could stand
31:34I actually gave that round to Hamshel
31:37He was more deliberate than we've seen in the past
31:41He showed more movement
31:43Here he comes in
31:44And there you see the butt
31:45In which he's led with his head
31:48And Hagler was very upset
31:51There it is
31:52He led with his head
31:53He did not cut Hagler
31:56He is being
31:57He is being more deliberate
31:59And Hagler's anger
32:01He got the best of him in that round
32:03He seemed frustrated
32:04He seemed a little bit surprised by
32:06The way Hamshel fought him
32:09Round two
32:10A lot of fireworks on that first round
32:13You may see a lot more movement from Marvin
32:16What did you say?
32:17Put this when you should
32:21Hats are still on his toes
32:22And give this man a lot of lateral movement
32:24Keep in the center of the ring
32:25Keep in the center of the ring
32:26And not let Hamshel
32:27Get him against the ropes
32:28Nor the corner
32:31Hamshel cut above the brow
32:33On the brow actually
32:34Over the left eye
32:35So we will keep an eye on that
32:36Look at Hamshel move his head
32:41Now that definitely is a big change
32:43In one stop for Hamshel
32:45He is giving Hagler a lot more movement
32:47From the head
32:48He's not a stationary target anymore
32:51And Hagler going with a jab
32:52And a quick right hand
32:53Behind that left jab
32:54Very quick combination by Hagler
32:58So what you see Barry
32:59They have not changed the style of my
33:01Miss Faulkner
33:02Just uh
33:03Add it on
33:05Going side to side a little bit more
33:06Bobbing
33:07Weaving
33:08One minute into the second round
33:15And once more
33:16Hamshel opens up on Hagler
33:17But Hagler counterpunching right hand
33:19What also may be affecting this fight
33:31Uh, Mustafa Hamshel ahead and pull off
33:34A little more than half a pound
33:35And it may take his toe
33:36Pretty nasty bleeding right now
33:38From that cut over the eye
33:39And it isn't a place where it could really affect it
33:42The blood coming down alongside the bridge of the nose
33:46It not yet is getting in Hamshel's eye
33:48But it is that type of cut
33:49And it could really be a factor in this fight
33:51I believe that that is the same cut from the first round
33:59I don't think he was cut any more than that
34:02Watch your head
34:03Marvin must be extra careful of the tactics
34:05Let's go
34:06Of Mustafa Hamshel
34:07And Mucanti once more said to Hamshel
34:10Watch your head
34:11Watch your shoulders
34:12Watch the head
34:13Hagler must be extra careful
34:22Remember the fight with Vitoantofermo
34:25There was a butt in the first round
34:26That opened up a big cut
34:27On marvelous Marvin Hagler
34:29There was a butt in the first round of this fight too
34:31It did not open a cut
34:33The only blood right now showing from the left eye
34:35Mustapha Hamshaw.
34:40That's a good right hand by Hamshaw.
34:46Mustapha Hamshaw uses his shoulders very well.
34:49He has a chin underneath his shoulders.
34:53He has very broad shoulders.
34:56In between rounds, we will look into the corner of Mustapha Hamshaw
34:59and we will try to check on that cut.
35:01Hamshaw took a good right hand that stopped him in his tracks.
35:05That right hand knocks a lot of fighters out.
35:21A clean right hand.
35:24Just stopped Hamshaw momentarily and he leaped right back to the attack.
35:31Hold your back.
35:35The question is whether...
35:36Is whether Hamshaw can fight effectively in this style.
35:51He obviously is not getting hit as much as he was in the first fight.
35:54And there's that right hand.
35:58A clean punch.
36:09Tommy Hearns incidentally sitting right directly behind us here talking
36:13with some of his cohorts saying,
36:15I got my fingers crossed.
36:17There's no question as to who he is rooting for.
36:24It's the third round.
36:25Hamshaw fighting with his elbows and his head.
36:27And that was just out and out a bunt.
36:32Hagler can't lose his composure, but he must stay relaxed, stay calm.
36:36I think this is what Hamshaw won't have to do.
36:40Just get upset.
36:41Just run in.
36:42Hagler's looking at right hand into the face.
36:57A good combination.
36:59Stunned Hamshaw once more.
37:01A left and a right hand right behind him.
37:04Stop holding, Ratshu!
37:07Hagler does not need to load up.
37:10That right jab of him is so effective.
37:12And it's going to enable him to throw a lot of combinations.
37:16Without being susceptible to being hit by the head.
37:20And every time Hamshaw lowers his head, Hagler takes a half step back.
37:28Hagler getting off faster than Hamshaw.
37:30No question about that.
37:31Another good combination and Hamshaw is down.
37:37Beautiful combination.
37:45Now you're going to see Marvin, Marvellous Marvin Hagler go to work.
37:50He has a great killer in stick.
37:52He started with a right hand and Hamshaw holds on once more.
37:55Uppercut and a left hand.
37:57Hagler not wasting any punches here.
37:59Hamshaw right at the moment fighting on instinct.
38:04Proud on its feet at the Garden.
38:10Inside one minute remaining.
38:13He's ready to go.
38:15He's ready to go.
38:17Hamshaw is out on his feet.
38:18Hagler should be able to finish him off.
38:19Time no factor.
38:20He says don't push.
38:21There's a right hand.
38:22Hamshaw is down.
38:23He will not get up.
38:24This one is all over.
38:25A stunning performance by Marvellous Marvin Hagler.
38:30Well that's going to make people sit up and take notice I think Ray.
38:31Oh for sure.
38:32I think Hagler just did a great job.
38:33He's ready to go.
38:34He's ready to go.
38:35He's ready to go.
38:36Do it a great job at doing away with Mustafa Hamshaw.
38:37And that's going to make you sit up and take notice I think Ray.
38:55Well, that's going to make people sit up and take notice, I think, Ray.
38:59Oh, for sure.
39:00I think Hagler just did a great job in doing away with Mustafa Hamshir.
39:06He was very sharp.
39:08I think the last time these two fought,
39:11we had said that that was as good a performance as we'd seen of Marvin Hagler.
39:14However, at that time, Hamshir's style was made to order for Hagler.
39:18Tonight, Hamshir tried to do something a little bit different.
39:21And I'll bet here that marvelous Marvin Hagler didn't miss but ten punches in this fight.
39:25Well, the right hook was what did the damage.
39:28In fact, he sent Hamshir to the canvas, and he took his time.
39:32I was impressed with the fact Hagler took his time.
39:36And here, Hamshir's just on Queer Street.
39:38His legs are not steady, and this Hagler just put a barrage of punches together
39:42and put Hamshir down for good and didn't miss any punches.
39:45And that really is the key.
39:47His punches were very accurate, Barry.
39:49He just took his time, and he was very frustrated and angry at first.
39:52That right hook there was the final point at the end of the fight.
39:57But frustration was in Hagler's face for a long time
40:00because Hamshir did a lot of things.
40:02I think Hagler was very concerned, as a matter of fact, about a butt,
40:05because that, of course, could turn a fight.
40:09And Hagler looking down at Tommy Hearns, who sits behind us here.
40:16Pat Pecinelli pointing to Hearns.
40:18Hearns got to be a happy man.
40:19And he wants to be pointed to at this point.
40:25This is what the public wants.
40:26This is a big, this is a natural fight, a big fight.
40:29It's a happening.
40:30It's an event.
40:33Marvelous Marvin Hagler, absolutely a fine performance.
40:36We keep referring to him as Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
40:37We want you to know that is his given name.
40:39He had it changed.
40:40Ergo, it is Marvelous Marvin, not just simply Marvin.
40:43Right now, let's go up to the ring announcer.
40:44Mike Buffer, he has the official decision.
40:46We're telling the time, 2.31 of the third round.
40:53The referee stops the bout.
40:56The winner, by technical knockout, still undisputed,
41:01middleweight champion of the world,
41:05Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
41:08So you heard it, and it was tremendously an impressive performance.
41:25And Larry Merchant trying to get in position to talk with the winner,
41:32Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
41:33And let's go to Larry Merchant right now.
41:38Marvin, it looks like you came into this fight really angry for the first time in some time.
41:43Yeah, it was chill.
41:44But first of all, I want to say happy birthday to my grandmother,
41:47Jesse Hagler, and also to all my partner partners
41:49who helped me to get a tip-top shape for this fight.
41:52Everything was on the money tonight.
41:53I knew it was a matter of time.
41:55Coming back, I put on more weight.
41:57You know, like I was like, too blue light the last time.
42:00But this time, I had to punch a towel.
42:03Oh, yeah, getting better.
42:04Give me Tommy Hearns.
42:06What happened when he butted you, Marvin?
42:09Excuse me?
42:09What happened when he butted you?
42:11Well, you see him very dirty.
42:12It's very obvious.
42:13I see then there was no referee out there in his ring.
42:15So you want to play dirty?
42:17I play dirty.
42:18You seem even almost wild in your anxiety to hurt him.
42:22Well, I stopped it, though.
42:23I cut it down and started putting things together.
42:25And I realized, let him off a little bit.
42:27He's got to leave him open.
42:28Let him get the crazy.
42:29Let him be the crazy one.
42:31Wasn't he trying not to come in a straight line at you
42:33as he did in the first fight?
42:34He tried to be a little cute.
42:36More bobbing and weaving.
42:37But he can't whoop marvelous Marvin Hagler.
42:39That's it.
42:40Nobody can whoop me.
42:41I'm the best.
42:42They won't give me the credit, not even you.
42:45But I'm the best.
42:46I'll wait one day to hear you say that I am the greatest.
42:48I'm waiting.
42:49We're going to take a look at the second knockdown, Marvin.
42:53Describe it for us.
42:54Well, I was a little wild, like you said.
42:56I had to settle down.
42:57I tried to put the combinations together.
43:00Nice.
43:01Nice uppercut.
43:03It's just a matter of just putting it a punch in.
43:04I had so much more combinations.
43:07And we were just playing on using it.
43:08Here it comes again.
43:09It's just one of the punches I worked on in training camp here
43:11because he drops his right hand there a little bit.
43:15And like I said, he's got a big heart.
43:17He's courageous.
43:17He came to fight.
43:18But you know, he can't whoop no marvelous Marvin Hagler.
43:21Did you want to put a show on here in your debut at Madison Square Garden?
43:26My debut right here at Madison Square.
43:28This is the highlight of my career,
43:29and I'm glad that I've done it right here at Madison Square Garden.
43:32And I'm glad that what had happened was by me being exposed to the rest of the world
43:36and come here, New York was ready for me.
43:39They were ready.
43:40It's a good birthday, but also today is my manager at Goody's
43:44and Pat Petronelli's birthday also.
43:46And also my grandmother, Bessie Hagler.
43:48What's the next fight?
43:49Well, we don't know.
43:50We're taking one step at a time.
43:51But you know who we want.
43:52You know who the public wants.
43:54You can ask them.
43:55I'm going to tell you, he better come and get me
43:57before I decide that I don't want him
43:58because money is not everything,
44:00and that's what I'm trying to say.
44:01I want to show my championship skill out here
44:03and show the people that I am a true champion.
44:06I hold all three belts,
44:07and I'd love to see all the championships be united.
44:10Thanks so much, Marvin Hagler.
44:12I'll be back with a final comment in a moment,
44:15but now back to Barry and Ray.
44:17All right, thank you very much, Larry Merchant.
44:19Incidentally, you saw a little head pop in behind Larry Merchant
44:22and marvelous Marvin Hagler.
44:23That was the head of Vito Antifermo.
44:25There is the head of Tommy Hurts.
44:28He's smiling with good reason, Ray.
44:29Well, you're talking about a big fight,
44:31a fight that the public want to see.
44:33It's Thomas Hearns and marvelous Marvin Hagler.
44:36I mean, that's a natural fight.
44:37It's a big fight.
44:38It's an event, and I think people want to see that,
44:41especially now.
44:42And they say, of course, that Styles make fights.
44:44I think Styles made this fight.
44:45It particularly made it, of course, for the winner,
44:47marvelous Marvin Hagler.
44:48What will it do against Tommy Hearns?
44:49Well, I tell you, it's going to be a strategic fight
44:52from both fighters,
44:53and the fact that Marvin now is so strong,
44:55and Tommy, he's developed into a middleweight,
44:57so it's an interesting matchup.
44:59Well, a very, very impressive victory,
45:02I think it's fair to say,
45:03for marvelous Marvin Hagler.
45:04We've seen him be sharp in the past,
45:06and I believe we've ever seen him be as sharp
45:07as he was tonight.
45:08For some final words, then,
45:09let's go back out to the ring and Larry Merchant.
45:11After seeing this fight tonight,
45:14I'm convinced that if Custer got a rematch
45:16of Little Bighorn,
45:18he'd have lost again.
45:20History is destiny,
45:22and there's just no way that Mustafa Hampshire
45:24has enough guns
45:25to beat a skilled, fierce,
45:29marvelous Marvin Hagler.
45:31Just a moment to tell you about the negotiations going on.
45:34According to promoter Barbarum,
45:37they are close to making a fight
45:39between marvelous Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns.
45:43He says that the two fighters will share $10 million.
45:46The question is how they will share it,
45:49and once fighters start talking about money,
45:52you can expect that they will come to an agreement soon
45:56for a fight, probably next March.
45:59Barry?
46:00Thank you, Larry,
46:01and it should be a tremendous fight.
46:02There's no question about that.
46:04You know, there's an interesting thing, too,
46:05in the way marvelous Marvin Hagler
46:07handled himself tonight, too.
46:09We have talked about this on numerous occasions, Ray,
46:11but Marvin has sort of tried to reach out for success
46:13and pull success to him,
46:15and in the past, for some reason,
46:16he hasn't really been noted
46:17as being the great middleweight champion.
46:19Tonight, I did notice he was doing that,
46:21and I think people are starting to recognize him
46:23for his abilities in the boxing ring.
46:24Well, I think what has been bothering Marvin
46:25for a long time is the fact that he wants
46:27the big recognition that, I guess, I've received
46:30and L. Hearns has received,
46:31and in order to get there,
46:33I think a fight against those two
46:35will bring it out.
46:36Well, marvelous Marvin Hagler said
46:37a little bit earlier,
46:38he said New York was ready
46:39for marvelous Marvin Hagler.
46:40Well, I think marvelous Marvin Hagler
46:42was ready tonight for New York.
46:44It was a great victory for him.
46:45Third round knockout
46:46over a gutsy Mustafa Ham show.
