00:00:00There you go, as the Patriots and Chargers turn up the heat for the December run to the playoffs.
00:00:10It's the defining month of the NFL season.
00:00:13The states are higher, the intensity greater, the emotions hotter.
00:00:17December has arrived.
00:00:18The big picture is to get to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl.
00:00:22And, you know, you have to take care of business earlier in the year,
00:00:25and hopefully in December you have a chance, an opportunity to run for it.
00:00:30Oh!
00:00:37Drew Bledsoe has his patch positioned nicely, yet there's still much work to be done.
00:00:42The Chargers have made their mark in this month before.
00:00:45Can they summon up the stamina to do it again?
00:00:48The Patriots and Chargers begin their run for the playoffs tonight on ESPN.
00:00:53Oh!
00:01:00Hello, everybody.
00:01:28I'm Mike Patrick along with Joe Theismann and Mark Malone.
00:01:31Welcome to the NFL on ESPN.
00:01:35Bill Parcells knows all about winning football in December,
00:01:39and last week he tuned up the Patriots by having Curtis Martin carry the ball 35 times for 141 yards rushing.
00:01:46Martin will be a huge factor again tonight.
00:01:48And so will Drew Bledsoe, who with 20 touchdown passes and only nine interceptions is having the best year of his young career.
00:01:55Coaches are always looking for balance on offense.
00:01:58And, Joe, the Patriots think they finally found it.
00:02:00And, Michael, San Diego is desperately needing to find it.
00:02:03I mean, quarterback Stan Humphreys has been making the big plays we've all come to expect.
00:02:08And Tony Martin leads the NFL in touchdown catches.
00:02:11But what the Chargers must do tonight is have a complimentary running attack to go along with that big-time passing game.
00:02:18Like Coach Parcell, Bobby Ross has forged a great December record of his own.
00:02:22And he'll be the first to tell you, in order to win in December, you've got to run the football.
00:02:28All right, Joe, and it is a huge game for both these teams' playoffs hopes.
00:02:33The Patriots are in great shape in the AFC wildcard race.
00:02:36And with Buffalo losing today, a New England win would give them first place in the AFC East.
00:02:41San Diego is clinging to the final AFC wildcard spot and needs a win to stay ahead of the Colts and the Oilers.
00:02:48And a reminder, Mark Malone with us throughout the night looking at key matchups and trends in his Spotlight segments.
00:02:56New England has won the toss.
00:02:58John Carney to kick it away to David Meggett and Troy Brown.
00:03:11A full house at the Murph.
00:03:14And we are underway in San Diego.
00:03:22Brown at the 10.
00:03:24Good wedge in front.
00:03:27Brown still on his feet.
00:03:29Finally forced out of bounds.
00:03:32For the Patriots offense, Drew Bledsoe is having a banner year in the NFL's top four in yards, completions, and touchdown passes.
00:03:40Rookie Terry Glenn has had quite an impact.
00:03:42His 62 catches, seventh in the AFC, is more than all the other wide receivers combined.
00:03:48Up front, Bruce Armstrong, the most decorated lineman, four Pro Bowls, but he's struggled a bit in pass protection lately.
00:03:54Martin is the deep man in the ice.
00:04:05Sam Gash is lead blocker.
00:04:07Junior Seau set to unleash the Charger defense.
00:04:12Play action.
00:04:13Bledsoe.
00:04:14Coach right down the middle to the San Diego 42.
00:04:18You know, Mike, the thing that Kurt Covea, the middle linebacker of the Chargers, told me, I've got to be concerned with the play action.
00:04:28There's the fake right at him, and they go right down his left side.
00:04:32That's Ben Coates right down the middle, right past Kurt Covea, the middle linebacker of the Chargers.
00:04:36Ben Coates, ever since he has been in the league, a premier pass receiver from that tight end spot.
00:04:42He has cut passes in 62 straight games.
00:04:46Curtis Martin with his first carry, nothing to it.
00:04:49Kevin Ross up from his safety spot.
00:04:52San Diego's defense has gotten a boost from Chris Mims.
00:04:55Last year out of shape, he had only two sacks.
00:04:57This year he's tied for the club lead with five.
00:05:00Junior Seau also has five and is number two in tackles, even with nagging injuries.
00:05:04He is the NFL's premier big play man.
00:05:07And in the secondary, Rodney Harrison moved from three to strong safety.
00:05:11It's paid off.
00:05:12He leads the team in both tackles and interceptions.
00:05:15Dave Aloff, the defensive coordinator of San Diego, who has seen his unit play much better the last three weeks.
00:05:22They'll face a test tonight.
00:05:23Bledsoe complete, about two yards shy of the first down.
00:05:30Got it out to Terry Glenn at the sidewalk.
00:05:32He's got my vote for rookie of the year, Mike.
00:05:35Terry Glenn has really become something special since he got that hamstring fixed.
00:05:38Now he's going to go up against Willie Clark, number 31.
00:05:41A little inside move.
00:05:43And it looks like the Patriots on offense are in a nice rhythm so far throwing the football.
00:05:48Clark starting at the corner because Darian Gordon has back spasms.
00:05:52That will also hurt the Chargers most likely in the kick return game.
00:05:56Curtis Martin.
00:06:04Excuse me, it was Megat who checked into the lineup.
00:06:06Megat got the carry.
00:06:08And close to the marker.
00:06:10It appeared he needed to get just inside the 33-yard line.
00:06:19And there is a guy who has no qualms about going for fourth down any time.
00:06:23Doesn't even blink an eye about it.
00:06:24I mean, he makes decisions.
00:06:25He has great belief in his football team.
00:06:27And, you know, he's going to do things to protect it.
00:06:29For Bobby Ross, he's got to be concerned about what happens at the line of scrimmage.
00:06:34If the Patriots' offensive line can control his defensive line, it would be a tough night for the Chargers.
00:06:40Gone for it 25 times this year.
00:06:4252% is 13th.
00:06:44And Bledsoe has to take a timeout.
00:06:48We're in the middle of the opening drive in San Diego.
00:06:51We are scoreless.
00:06:57ESPN Sunday Night NFL is brought to you by MasterCard.
00:07:01MasterCard.
00:07:01It's smart money.
00:07:02By Cadillac and your Cadillac dealers.
00:07:05And by McDonald's.
00:07:06Official break of the NFL.
00:07:10Patriots on their opening drive have gotten inside the San Diego 35-yard line.
00:07:15They face a fourth and one.
00:07:19Didn't take us long to get to a big play in this game.
00:07:22Keith Byers has checked in.
00:07:24Along with Curtis Martin.
00:07:26Bledsoe to throw.
00:07:33Bledsoe to the 13-yard line.
00:07:38He beat Rodney Harrison.
00:07:40Off in of 22.
00:07:42My offensively, the Patriots just have so much confidence when Drew Bledsoe has his hands
00:07:47on the football.
00:07:48And when you're going to run, I mean, you just run where, or play action fake where Bledsoe
00:07:52is.
00:07:54Where Ben Coates is.
00:07:55He's just going to go down.
00:07:55They're going to run the fake inside.
00:07:57He's going to break on out to the flat.
00:07:59And you wind up with a pretty good completion.
00:08:01He just misses all the traffic.
00:08:03You've got an excellent tight end on a linebacker.
00:08:05Mismatch.
00:08:06Harrison was chasing.
00:08:07Just couldn't get there.
00:08:09Martin.
00:08:10Boy, he hits the hole in a hurry.
00:08:11And first inside the 10.
00:08:13To about the 8-yard line.
00:08:15Goveo was waiting for him.
00:08:18Last week, Bill Parcells came out.
00:08:20Ran 17 of the first 19 plays with Curtis Martin.
00:08:24But as he's so, he put it very well last night.
00:08:27You do what's effective.
00:08:29Everyone keeps trying to push him back in this Giants mold of run, run, run.
00:08:32He says, I don't have that kind of team.
00:08:34I do what works.
00:08:35It's my job as a coach.
00:08:36But I think also, Bill's never going to get away from the fact that he plays in New England.
00:08:40He coached in New York.
00:08:41He still knows the value of a running game.
00:08:44Curtis Martin is out as a flanker.
00:08:47Bledsoe looks the other way.
00:08:49And what a catch by Terry Glenn.
00:08:51Had to turn around.
00:08:52Caught it behind him.
00:08:53Touchdown.
00:08:55That was the epitome of a one-handed catch.
00:08:57He just put it right on the hip.
00:09:00And it's right there.
00:09:01Drew Bledsoe looks so comfortable through that entire series.
00:09:05Just dropping back and throwing the ball.
00:09:07The inside receiver, number 88.
00:09:09Junior Seau tries to get a chuck on him.
00:09:11Can't catch up to him.
00:09:13Willie Clark 31's there.
00:09:14Too late.
00:09:15He just throws it out.
00:09:17Pitching catch.
00:09:18One-handed.
00:09:19Didn't even need the right one.
00:09:20Vinatieri for the point after.
00:09:23And all Bledsoe did on that drive was hit four out of four for 59 yards.
00:09:30The Patriots with an impressive opening drive.
00:09:34They lead it 7-0.
00:09:38Big game against Denver.
00:09:39Bill Parcells was very disappointed in the way his team played.
00:09:42Tonight, again, playoff atmosphere.
00:09:44This is a great start.
00:09:45Well, this is a hostile environment, too.
00:09:47They did that at home.
00:09:48They didn't play well against Denver at home.
00:09:49Here they now come on the road against San Diego.
00:09:52Somebody they may have to play later on down the road in the year.
00:09:55So he feels like if his team can play well here, they're young enough.
00:09:59If they can get a little bit of inspiration on the road,
00:10:01it'll suit them well for the next three weeks and hopefully into January.
00:10:05And he's interested to see if they can live up to the challenge.
00:10:09Coleman backs all the way one yard into the end zone.
00:10:14And doesn't even get back to the 15-yard line.
00:10:18The scoring drive to the Patriots, nearly flawless.
00:10:26Seven plays went 64 yards.
00:10:28Glenn capped it off.
00:10:30Mostly done in the air as Curtis Martin had very little success running the ball.
00:10:34Bledsoe, 59 of the 64 yards passing.
00:10:37Now San Diego's turn with the football as Junior Seau and company try to regroup on the sideline.
00:10:51Stan Humphreys wants to throw on first down.
00:10:53And got Deans May out across the 20.
00:10:57San Diego's offense has been carried by Stan Humphreys.
00:11:00He's had 15 touchdown passes, only six interceptions, and a career-high passer rating.
00:11:06Leonard Russell was the Patriots' leading rusher in 93 and has bitter memories about his departure.
00:11:11Tonight's game is personal.
00:11:12The offensive line has shown signs of coming together the last three games.
00:11:17Vaughn Parker is their best pass blocker.
00:11:19Russell, the big man, dances outside.
00:11:28Leonard Russell to the 33-yard line.
00:11:33He's tough once he gets that big body going.
00:11:35And that's the thing I think the Chargers have to do on offense, Mike, is they're big enough up front.
00:11:40They have to be able to control that line of scrimmage.
00:11:42You've got Eric Moten, number 77.
00:11:44Vaughn Parker, number 70, on the left side.
00:11:46They do a good job, and, of course, you get the H-back coming in.
00:11:49Shannon Mitchell seals the inside, and Leonard Russell is quick enough to hit the corner.
00:11:55Tenth in the conference in rushing.
00:12:04Russell again on the deluxe.
00:12:07This time does not get back to the line of scrimmage to tackle by Ted Johnson.
00:12:11For the Patriots on defense, Willie McGinnis has adopted to the switch from linebacker.
00:12:16His eight sacks is in the AFC's top five.
00:12:20Ted Johnson has grown into his role as a first-time middle linebacker.
00:12:2386 tackles, leads New England.
00:12:25And they brought Willie Clay in from Detroit to make plays, and he has done it.
00:12:29Number two in tackles, the club leader in interceptions.
00:12:34Now, Groh, the defensive coordinator for the Patriots.
00:12:37Both of these defenses have given up a lot of yards and a lot of points this year.
00:12:41Russell trying to make a behind-the-back one-handed catch in the game.
00:12:45Well, you know, people would say, oh, geez, why couldn't he catch that?
00:12:48To me, for a quarterback, that's the toughest throw in football,
00:12:51is to hit a running back swinging out of the backfield.
00:12:54You have to give it to him in time so that he can make the catch,
00:12:57focus on somebody closing on him real quick, and try and make a move.
00:13:01So many things have to happen.
00:13:02The ball has to be thrown perfectly.
00:13:04That one wasn't.
00:13:05Third and ten for San Diego.
00:13:09They have not done well in this department.
00:13:11Only 35%-ish yet.
00:13:13Terrell Fletcher, number 41, is in the lineup.
00:13:16Humphreys guns it.
00:13:18Nice defensive play by Otis Smith.
00:13:20Looked like he got a hand on it and knocked it away.
00:13:22The Chargers will have to punt.
00:13:25Otis Smith had his best year last year with the Jets with six interceptions.
00:13:29He's a corner who's quick enough at 5'11 and 190 to be able to play Tony Martin fairly physical.
00:13:35Be a good matchup for him.
00:13:37Darin Bennett, who can just knock the lights out of it to kick to David Meggett, third in the AFC this year in punt returns, averaging 11.8 a kick.
00:13:51Not one of his best.
00:13:53And Meggett just gains the fair catch.
00:13:55He gets five yards out of it after falling down a 42-yard punt.
00:14:01Bledsoe with a 7-0 lead will bring his offense back on the field.
00:14:05Most enduring symbols, the Goodyear Blimp Eagle, based in Carson, California, has been providing you beautiful aerial pictures.
00:14:181996, March the 71st consecutive year, a Goodyear Blimp, easy for you to say, has flown over a major sporting event.
00:14:27Curtis Martin, brought down by Seau at the 35.
00:14:36And off to number one again, Curtis Martin.
00:14:38In the three years Bob Kraft has owned this New England Patriots football team, he just continues to build little increments.
00:14:46He went himself, got himself a quarterback.
00:14:48And he started to add things around him.
00:14:50He went and got Terry Glenn to give Drew Bledsoe somebody to throw the football.
00:14:54The offensive side of the ball is as dangerous as there is in football.
00:14:58This man's job is to make sure the defense can get it done as well.
00:15:012nd and 6th Chargers come with a blitz.
00:15:05And Martin had nowhere to go.
00:15:08Seau gummed up the works initially and then Kevin Ross came flying up from his free safety spot.
00:15:13Mike, it's 3rd down and 5th and 6th is where the Chargers, I think, have the burden of shutting down Bledsoe tonight.
00:15:22Normally he would try and look for Ben Coates because that was really the only person he had to throw the ball to.
00:15:28Now, I would look for him to try and get the ball possibly to Terry Glenn somewhere in the middle of the football field.
00:15:33Drew Bledsoe now, I think he would agree, has as many weapons as anybody.
00:15:38Seau offside, didn't make it back.
00:15:40Free play for Bledsoe.
00:15:42Knocked away from Glenn.
00:15:43Excellent coverage by Terrence Shaw.
00:15:46But Seau's aggressiveness may cost him on this.
00:15:50I talked to Drew Bledsoe earlier today.
00:15:53He said to me, we're going to try and take and use Junior Seau's aggressiveness against him.
00:15:59And that's exactly what he did.
00:16:01Offside by the defense in the neutral zone at the snap.
00:16:04But it is still 3rd down, now 3rd and 2.
00:16:11Yeah, but here's the staggered count.
00:16:13Gives the old hard count.
00:16:14Junior says, I'm coming.
00:16:15No, I'm not.
00:16:16Oh, yes, I am.
00:16:17No, I'm not.
00:16:17Let me get back.
00:16:18Uh-uh.
00:16:19Sorry.
00:16:23That's where you see the maturity in a quarterback.
00:16:26Using the things that you have to take advantage of as a quarterback.
00:16:29Using the tools.
00:16:30Can't make Bobby Ross very happy what he's seen so far from his defense.
00:16:34Coates and Glenn go to the top of your screen together.
00:16:43Curtis Martin on the toss.
00:16:46First down and more.
00:16:47Martin to midfield.
00:16:49Finally spun down by Marco Coleman.
00:16:51So they go with the toss sweep on 3rd and short.
00:16:555 carries, 17 yards for Martin.
00:16:58Ben Coates is mostly known for his pass-catching ability.
00:17:01But watch number 87, Seal Chris Mims, 94.
00:17:04He sets the corner.
00:17:06You get the guard out in front.
00:17:07You allow Curtis Martin to pick and choose where he wants to.
00:17:10But that guy, the corner guy, has got to set the post for the man to get around.
00:17:14And Seau got trapped inside and couldn't come back out to make the tackle.
00:17:24Bledsoe with time.
00:17:25Glenn is open.
00:17:28Out of bounds.
00:17:29Willie Clark was beaten by Glenn and Bledsoe threw a strike.
00:17:37But I think Glenn got one foot in.
00:17:40And that really is the thrower.
00:17:43That's on Drew Bledsoe.
00:17:45Instead of leading him up the field, what he does is he leads him out towards the sidelines.
00:17:49It's a combination.
00:17:50Bledsoe threw the ball there.
00:17:52But Glenn has got to know where the sideline is.
00:17:55That's what happens when you miss all that time as a rookie in training camp.
00:17:58You don't learn that discipline.
00:18:02Second and ten.
00:18:03The San Diego crowd getting a little perturbed.
00:18:07Draw to Martin.
00:18:09Nice cutback.
00:18:11Coleman makes the tackle, but he picks up six.
00:18:16Curtis Martin carried the ball 35 times a week ago.
00:18:20Bill Parcells acknowledged he's not going to be around for a long time if he carries it 35 times a game.
00:18:25But Martin says, yeah, give it to me.
00:18:27I like it 35 times.
00:18:29There are other coaches around the league that have small backs that adhere to that theory.
00:18:33I don't.
00:18:34I think he's a football player.
00:18:35I think, yeah, over six or seven years if he does it, you know, anybody wears down.
00:18:39Whether you're 240 or 210.
00:18:43Third and four.
00:18:44Here comes the blitz.
00:18:48They pick it up and Bledsoe throws.
00:18:50Clark never turned around, never saw the ball.
00:18:56The tackle had to be made by Harrison.
00:18:58It's a gain of 26.
00:18:59I don't care who has to cover Terry Glenn they got their hands full, whether it's Willie Clark or Terrence Shaw or anyone else.
00:19:08Glenn looking at the defender, does a good job of getting outside, does a nice job of hand checking, and then goes to get the football.
00:19:15He's the kind of a receiver that is going to go get the ball no matter where you put it, not allow somebody to not allow him to get there.
00:19:23Darian Gordon not starting tonight because of back spasms, and Willie Clark is being lit up on that corner.
00:19:31Bledsoe can't find anybody.
00:19:33Now throws deep over the middle.
00:19:35Touchdown, fire!
00:19:37There is a marker down.
00:19:41Kevin Ross couldn't stay with him forever, and Keith Fiers with those great hands made the catch.
00:19:48You've got to give the offensive line of the New England Patriots a lot of credit for a lot of time.
00:19:57Carcells told us last night, Mike, Keith Fiers is great.
00:20:011-1,000.
00:20:022-1,000.
00:20:033-1,000.
00:20:044-1,000.
00:20:05You never get 4-1,000 in time.
00:20:08And if there was a marker, they picked it up.
00:20:10The touchdown stands.
00:20:12He had all day against the blitz.
00:20:15Then a Terry gets the point after.
00:20:21And New England with fireworks early.
00:20:23They lead it 14-0.
00:20:29Being lit up like a Christmas tree so far.
00:20:32Drew Bledsoe really picking on him with Terry Glenn.
00:20:35Darian Gordon unable to go so far because of back spasms.
00:20:39Of course, Glenn and Bledsoe have done that to a lot of people.
00:20:42This kid is special.
00:20:44I mean, you can talk about a lot of guys that play in this game.
00:20:46Both these kids are.
00:20:48Drew Bledsoe's playing like it's a Sandlot game.
00:20:50Just throwing the ball around and telling Terry Glenn, you go down the field, go get it.
00:20:53I'll get it there.
00:20:57Coleman on the run at the 3.
00:21:02The 29-yard line.
00:21:04The NFL's best pregame show, NFL Countdown, every Sunday at 11.30 a.m.
00:21:12As Chris Berman and the gang preview all the action.
00:21:15Then at 7 p.m., it's prime time.
00:21:17You'll see all the highlights of all the day's games.
00:21:20And at 8 p.m., we'll have Barry Sanders and the Lions against the Minnesota Vikings.
00:21:25Jack Murphy Stadium packed tonight as both of these teams in the playoff hunt.
00:21:35Chargers with their second series.
00:21:36Leonard Russell rumbling through the secondary and pounds out to the 44-yard line.
00:21:42The Chargers are not about to abandon their game plan.
00:21:45It's still in the first quarter, even though they're down 14-9.
00:21:47Michael, as a matter of fact, the Chargers' game plan is so important to keeping New England's offense off the field.
00:21:54They have to run it.
00:21:55Eric Moten, number 77, does a terrific job on Willie McGinnis, number 55, to create the hole for Leonard Russell.
00:22:10Russell again.
00:22:11Drags a couple of tacklers with him up to the 47-yard line.
00:22:16Ted Johnson was there.
00:22:19Ralph Friedgen.
00:22:21Big Ralph right there.
00:22:22The Chargers' offensive coordinator.
00:22:26Trying to figure out a pace.
00:22:28It's hard to get a pace as an offensive coordinator and as a quarterback when you're on the sideline so much.
00:22:34He doesn't have a chance to get a rigger.
00:22:38Second and six.
00:22:41Here comes the blitz.
00:22:46Humphreys on low.
00:22:47Russell, who Ralph Friedgen told us in preseason, may have the best hands of any big man he's ever seen coming out of the backfield.
00:22:56Leonard Russell has spent a lot of time in a lot of places here over the last couple of years.
00:23:00Of course, started in New England, was a first-round draft pick for Bill Parcells.
00:23:04Didn't really work out.
00:23:05For some reason, Bill and Leonard didn't see eye-to-eye.
00:23:09He moved on to Denver.
00:23:11Wound up in St. Louis.
00:23:12Felt he should have played ahead of Jerome Bettis.
00:23:14Now he's found a home as the big bat in this offense.
00:23:17And the Chargers say he has done everything they asked him to do.
00:23:21Humphreys on third down.
00:23:24And has the first down to Charlie Jones, the rookie out of Fresno State, who they really like as a receiver.
00:23:30Otis Smith on the tackle.
00:23:31Mike, you look for little things out of rookie receivers.
00:23:35We saw Terry Glenn, although he's catching a lot of balls, get close to the sideline, wind up with an incompletion.
00:23:41Charlie Jones here looks where the first down marker is.
00:23:45He could have tried to get cute.
00:23:46He's the outside guy.
00:23:47He could have tried to get cute, but he didn't.
00:23:50He just went to try and get the first down.
00:23:53See, he sees the marker.
00:23:54Now he says, I've got to get up there.
00:23:57Jones, Fresno State's all-time leader.
00:24:01Uncle Larry played with you with the Redskins.
00:24:03And he had a cousin, Tommy Smith, who won the 200-meter gold medal in the Mexico City Olympics.
00:24:10I almost got his uncle Larry killed because I was a punt returner with Larry Jones.
00:24:16And I was supposed to block for him.
00:24:18Otis Smith is the injured player.
00:24:21They've already lost Jimmy Hitchcock for tonight's game and have Reynolds and Law, the only other healthy corners.
00:24:28And Ty Law really is not that healthy.
00:24:30They were going to take a look at him, and he's got a knee that's bothering him.
00:24:33And Ricky Reynolds has a couple of bad ankles, which he sprained on Thursday in practice this week.
00:24:38So, you know, they're real thin at the cornerback position.
00:24:42And Otis Smith, an excellent special teams player.
00:24:45When he was with the Eagles, he was the two-time special team MVP for that team.
00:24:50Looks like he's fine coming off.
00:24:52Patriots, in their first two possessions, scored touchdowns and leaded 14-0.
00:24:57And you don't think they were happy watching the Indianapolis-Buffalo game today?
00:25:03It gave them an opportunity to win tonight.
00:25:05They go into first place in the AFC East.
00:25:07Play action by Humphries.
00:25:14Loves to go downfield.
00:25:15Martin Murphy, touchdown!
00:25:22There's a flag down, and it will be roughing the passer.
00:25:26The touchdown will stand.
00:25:28Stan Humphries throws the deep ball as well as anybody that's ever played this game.
00:25:33And Tony Martin gets there for him, too, Michael.
00:25:3746 yards of beauty.
00:25:39I heard something today from Sterling Sharp on Countdown.
00:25:43He called Tony Martin the best receiver in football today, bar none.
00:25:48And I'll tell you something, he's making one case for it.
00:25:50And he just tied Lance Allworth's club record.
00:25:54His 14th receiving touchdown of the year.
00:26:03John Carney comes on for the point after.
00:26:06First quarter fireworks, three touchdowns already.
00:26:14A couple of big play offenses we have tonight.
00:26:17And defenses that really haven't been that strong this year.
00:26:22Carney converts the point after.
00:26:25And then a big play for San Diego to get back in the game.
00:26:28I think Ralph Regan found a little rhythm on that one, Mike.
00:26:31Tony Martin lined up outside on Ricky Reynolds.
00:26:33Does a good job escaping.
00:26:35And then just sort of lulls him, pushes back to him.
00:26:38Now, remember, Ricky's got a bad ankle.
00:26:39He's not going to catch Tony anyway.
00:26:41There's the touchdown.
00:26:42And the reason why you're able to do that as a quarterback,
00:26:45get somebody down the middle of the field,
00:26:47because you'll see the Patriots,
00:26:48they have everybody up around the line of scrimmage.
00:26:51And you've got Martin running down the middle of the football field.
00:26:54Scooter Magruder, number 27, gets caught up around the line of scrimmage.
00:26:58And it's hello, goodbye, catch you later.
00:27:01I got one.
00:27:02Tony Martin spent four rather invisible years in Miami.
00:27:05When he came here, they said he couldn't even run routes.
00:27:08And that is the roughing the passer penalty, McGinnis paving Stan Humphreys.
00:27:15They'll assess it on the kickoff.
00:27:17Let me tell you, the guy talking to him is Jerry Sullivan, the wide receiver coach.
00:27:21Jerry Sullivan is as responsible for the growth of Tony Martin as anybody.
00:27:25He's really taught him to be a great receiver.
00:27:30Tony basically said, hey, look, I could always run.
00:27:33What Coach Sullivan has taught me is how to stop and come out of routes.
00:27:36Jerry Sullivan, very proud of the Sun, who's a wide receiver at South Carolina.
00:27:40Thinks he ought to do some very good things for them next year.
00:27:43There was a decent guy that played the NFL that went to South Carolina.
00:27:46Sterling or something.
00:27:48I don't know who it was.
00:27:49He was pretty good, I understand.
00:27:50Megit and Brown are deep to receive.
00:27:59Now don't go to the kitchen too often, you're going to miss something.
00:28:08Kearney poochies it.
00:28:10Brown at the 10.
00:28:11And got back across to 21.
00:28:19Pushed all the way back to the 1.
00:28:21Direct TV's Braid 8 gets rolling on Tuesday night at 7.30.
00:28:30Tim Duncan and Wake Forest go against Mississippi State.
00:28:33Then at 10, Purdue meets the defending national champion, Kentucky Wildcats.
00:28:37Wednesday at 7.30, UMass battles at Georgetown.
00:28:40Hoyas, that's followed by the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Kansas Jayhawks.
00:28:44Cincinnati, number one this week, but the new rankings come out tomorrow.
00:28:49They will not be.
00:28:53Martin and Byers in the backfield together.
00:28:57Now Byers goes to a tight end spot.
00:29:01Bledsoe with time.
00:29:03Has the completion out to Sean Jefferson, the ex-charger to the 30.
00:29:07Michael, we talked about Leonard Russell playing for Coach Parcells.
00:29:10Well, you got Sean Jefferson, who was let go last year by the Chargers here,
00:29:14who also has something to prove.
00:29:16He is their downtown fast guy.
00:29:19I mean, but, you know, he's had, what, 38 catches this year,
00:29:24so it's not like he's been ignored.
00:29:25He's been a very integral part of the success that Bledsoe has had.
00:29:29Sean Jefferson's numbers.
00:29:31Drew Bledsoe, 112 yards passing in the quarter.
00:29:34He's on a pace for over 600 tonight.
00:29:37Curtis Martin gaping hole up the middle of midfield.
00:29:40Well, if you like offense, settle in.
00:29:48Don't blink your eyes.
00:29:49Watch number 55 on the right, Junior Seau.
00:29:52You block him, you pretty much handle this offense.
00:29:56Good job.
00:29:57Todd Rucci, number 71, makes the block.
00:30:00You know, when you talk about blocking,
00:30:01you don't have to hit somebody.
00:30:03You're just going to seal them off a little bit.
00:30:05Seau has...
00:30:06Martin.
00:30:11Govea had him in the backfield, couldn't hold him,
00:30:13and then Junior brings him down after a game of three.
00:30:16Govea had him for a loss and is upset with himself,
00:30:19but he didn't make the stop.
00:30:22Martin, very, very elusive as a running back.
00:30:25Number six, Kevin Ross.
00:30:30That's easy for New York City.
00:30:33In fact, he is the AFC's all-time leader
00:30:36in touchdowns per game so far in his second year.
00:30:401.11 touchdowns a game.
00:30:42Govea had him!
00:30:47Here comes the blitz.
00:30:48They pick it up again.
00:30:49Coates.
00:30:49A couple of yards shy of a first down.
00:30:53The strong safety, Rodney Harrison, made the tackle.
00:30:56One thing that you've got to watch in this game as it goes on
00:30:59is how well the secondary and linebackers of the Chargers
00:31:03will tackle the receivers and running backs of the Patriots.
00:31:07That's going to decide a lot of how this game goes
00:31:09because you know Drew's going to complete them.
00:31:12The question is, how many yards are they going to get
00:31:14after the initial hits and after the completion?
00:31:16Harrison and Ross, both good tackling safety.
00:31:21Third and two.
00:31:24Early movement.
00:31:25They're going to whistle that play dead.
00:31:27Looked like the left side of the Patriots line got a quick start.
00:31:34Before the ball was snapped,
00:31:36false starts by the offense, number 78.
00:31:40Five-yard penalty.
00:31:40It remains third down.
00:31:42That's the veteran, Bruce Armstrong.
00:31:43Ten-year man with four Pro Bowls to his credit.
00:31:47Yeah, he knows he's got to get a cutoff.
00:31:49He's just trying to get there quick.
00:31:5224 off sides.
00:31:54Only St. Louis has more in the NFL.
00:32:00Bill Parcells does not like mistakes.
00:32:02I mean, no coaches do.
00:32:04We've got two tonight.
00:32:05We can't tolerate them.
00:32:06Exactly.
00:32:06Bobby Rothson, Bill Parcells.
00:32:08Megan is in there on third and seven.
00:32:16Another blitz.
00:32:17Again, they don't get there.
00:32:18And Blanksoe throws tip incomplete.
00:32:21Harrison got a hand on it.
00:32:22It was intended for Troy Brown.
00:32:28Harrison, in his third year out of Western Illinois,
00:32:31has become a premier player in the secondary.
00:32:35Rodney Harrison's going to come into the middle of the screen.
00:32:37Drew's in the shotgun.
00:32:38Watch from the left to your right.
00:32:39You're going to see the receiver come in.
00:32:42I'll tell you something.
00:32:43That was a nice job by Harrison.
00:32:45Plus, he let Brown just get a little bit ahead
00:32:47and then made the play.
00:32:50Two for the punt.
00:32:51They don't have to.
00:32:54Well, this will be the last player in the first two.
00:32:57And Darian Gordon is back to receive.
00:32:59Sore ribs and all.
00:33:07Gordon lets it go, and it dies inside the two.
00:33:11What a punt by two for 44 yards
00:33:14and killed it inside the five.
00:33:15Break away of the week.
00:33:24Packers and Bears tied at seven at Rambo Field
00:33:27in the third quarter.
00:33:28Desmond Howard.
00:33:30He's gone.
00:33:30Good.
00:33:31Go.
00:33:31All the way.
00:33:3375-yard punt return.
00:33:3528-17.
00:33:36The Pack wins.
00:33:37They could be home for the playoffs, Mike.
00:33:40Tell you what, Boomer,
00:33:41the cold has been very, very good
00:33:42for Desmond Howard up there in Green Bay.
00:33:4414-7.
00:33:46Patriots with the lead here.
00:33:47First quarter, Dave Adolph and Junior Seau
00:33:50on the sideline.
00:33:52They probably saying to each other,
00:33:53hey, what's going wrong here?
00:33:54We can't do anything.
00:33:55Well, you can devise a game plan.
00:33:57Dave Adolph has figured out a game plan
00:33:59for the Patriots,
00:34:00but you have to modify it
00:34:01as the game goes on.
00:34:03I think that's where coaches
00:34:04really earn their reputations.
00:34:06What you do in the course of the game,
00:34:08not just the preparation.
00:34:09The guys who can adjust
00:34:10are the ones who win
00:34:11and stay in this league for 10 years.
00:34:13He's got it.
00:34:13He's got it.
00:34:14Russell got him in the end zone
00:34:21and he barely got out.
00:34:24Just barely.
00:34:30That's one of those plays
00:34:31that takes a little time to develop.
00:34:33It does,
00:34:34but this is also how important
00:34:35a big, powerful back is.
00:34:37He gets out of the end zone
00:34:38all by himself.
00:34:39He's hit a yard deep
00:34:40and he just runs over
00:34:42Otis Smith to get out.
00:34:44Willie McInnes just splits
00:34:45the double team,
00:34:47takes him in the end zone,
00:34:48but isn't strong enough
00:34:49to hold him in there.
00:34:52Defensively,
00:34:52New England's got to be careful
00:34:53with a big shot down the field here.
00:34:55Freddie Bradley,
00:34:56number 35,
00:34:57checks in the lineup.
00:34:59Humphries to throw.
00:35:00Jones made the catch.
00:35:09Jones made the catch.
00:35:11Holy cow,
00:35:12what a grab.
00:35:13Yeah,
00:35:13but the thing is,
00:35:14he could have gone up
00:35:15and run for a touchdown.
00:35:18Again,
00:35:18the youngster
00:35:19thinking he was down.
00:35:21What a catch.
00:35:26The official who was there
00:35:27did not blow his whistle
00:35:28and was just looking at Jones.
00:35:30And Jones was looking at him.
00:35:31And he didn't blow the whistle
00:35:33as him being down,
00:35:34he allowed him to continue to run.
00:35:36If they overrule this
00:35:37and call it incomplete,
00:35:39it will be a very,
00:35:40very bad judgment.
00:35:42Possess the ball in the air,
00:35:43but the first thing
00:35:44that touched the ground
00:35:45was the ball.
00:35:47Therefore,
00:35:47by rule,
00:35:48it's an incomplete pass.
00:35:49Third down.
00:35:54Well,
00:35:55let's take a look,
00:35:55see.
00:35:56He'll reach out
00:35:58and stretch for it.
00:35:59Remember,
00:36:00he's got to have possession.
00:36:01His feet aren't on the ground.
00:36:02They're saying
00:36:03the ball hit the ground.
00:36:04I think his hand
00:36:05was underneath it.
00:36:05His hand was underneath it.
00:36:07And the problem I have
00:36:08with that,
00:36:08Michael,
00:36:09is that the official
00:36:10that was closest to it
00:36:12did not call it incomplete.
00:36:14That's a bad call
00:36:14by the official.
00:36:15It's a terrible call.
00:36:15Watch his left hand.
00:36:17Watch his left hand
00:36:18go under the ball.
00:36:19See it?
00:36:19It's under the ball.
00:36:20Plus,
00:36:21his knee hit
00:36:21before his hand did.
00:36:25And the fans have
00:36:26every reason to vote.
00:36:28That was a tremendous
00:36:29effort by Jones.
00:36:36Now third and 11.
00:36:38Back in the hole.
00:36:39But the one thing
00:36:39he didn't do
00:36:40is get up
00:36:41and keep on running.
00:36:43That's a youngster.
00:36:44Johnson intercepted.
00:36:56Was it a catch?
00:36:59They're saying it is
00:37:00and it is.
00:37:01Intercepted by middle
00:37:02linebacker Ted Johnson.
00:37:08What a turnaround.
00:37:09Mike, let me tell you.
00:37:10Let's go back
00:37:10to the play before.
00:37:11The reason why
00:37:12you throw the ball
00:37:13down the field
00:37:14when you're backed up
00:37:15is because you can
00:37:16get the ball in the air.
00:37:18Here,
00:37:19Stan's forced him
00:37:20to try and convert
00:37:21the third down.
00:37:22It comes lower.
00:37:23Parker gets pushed
00:37:24back into him
00:37:25and he just gets
00:37:26the ball up.
00:37:27And you see
00:37:27Todd Collins
00:37:28come in from the right
00:37:29number 59
00:37:29and just flick it.
00:37:33So the Patriots
00:37:34with a great break
00:37:36inside the Samuel
00:37:37go 10 first and goal.
00:37:39Martin, draw.
00:37:41Maybe a yard.
00:37:48Mike, you just get
00:37:49the feeling
00:37:51in this game
00:37:52that the offenses
00:37:53are going to be able
00:37:54to move the football.
00:37:55This is a case
00:37:56where San Diego's
00:37:58defense has got
00:37:59to step up
00:37:59and just allow New England
00:38:01to try a shot at three.
00:38:03They can't give up
00:38:04the seven down here.
00:38:05You saw Farrakh Collins.
00:38:06He got credit
00:38:07for the tipped ball
00:38:08and Johnson got the intercept.
00:38:14Bledsoe to Gash.
00:38:16Touchdown!
00:38:20Sam Gash
00:38:21with Clark and Harrison.
00:38:24And Sam Gash
00:38:26made his 31st
00:38:28catch of the year.
00:38:29He got quite a compliment
00:38:31from Bobby Ross this week.
00:38:33He says he's the most
00:38:33underrated player
00:38:34in the NFL.
00:38:36Just comes out
00:38:37of the backfield.
00:38:39Drew sets up.
00:38:40Good rhythm.
00:38:42Nice pace.
00:38:42Just makes a good,
00:38:43easy throw
00:38:44and the rest
00:38:44is done by Gash.
00:38:45Ruben Davis is down
00:38:51for the San Diego Chargers,
00:38:52the big defensive lineman.
00:38:54You talk about
00:38:55the difference
00:38:55in New England's offense
00:38:57from a year ago
00:38:58and I think you can point
00:38:59not only to Terry Glenn
00:39:00and his ability
00:39:01to make plays
00:39:02but to Sam Gash.
00:39:03He has given
00:39:04Drew Bledsoe a place
00:39:06to go underneath
00:39:06like Kevin Turner
00:39:07did back in 94
00:39:09for him.
00:39:10This will be another
00:39:12major impetus
00:39:14for instant replay.
00:39:16What a turnaround.
00:39:17The Chargers
00:39:17hit a big play
00:39:18on a catch
00:39:19that should have been.
00:39:20It's overruled.
00:39:21Instead,
00:39:22they go back
00:39:22to the goal line
00:39:23and have a pass tip
00:39:23interception
00:39:24New England touchdown.
00:39:25That's a big turnaround.
00:39:26I mean,
00:39:27in some way,
00:39:28shape,
00:39:29or form,
00:39:29Mike,
00:39:29it should come back
00:39:30into the game.
00:39:32I know that
00:39:33I'm convinced
00:39:34that the coaches
00:39:34are for it
00:39:35but they're not
00:39:36the ones
00:39:36that get to vote on it.
00:39:37No,
00:39:37it's the owners.
00:39:41I want you
00:39:42to keep an eye
00:39:43on Charlie Jones'
00:39:44left hand.
00:39:46Watch how it goes
00:39:46under the ball.
00:39:49See how it just
00:39:49got under the ball?
00:39:51Now there's an official
00:39:53right there
00:39:53that doesn't signal anything.
00:39:55No,
00:39:55it's a catch
00:39:56as far as he's concerned
00:39:57and he was the one
00:39:58that was five yards
00:39:58from it.
00:39:59Right.
00:39:59And the closest one
00:40:00to it.
00:40:01And Ed Hockley
00:40:02said the ruling
00:40:03was that the first thing
00:40:04that hit the ground
00:40:05was the ball.
00:40:06We saw his knee
00:40:06hit first
00:40:07and his hand
00:40:08was under the ball.
00:40:09Regardless,
00:40:10it is 20-7
00:40:11New England
00:40:12as Drew Bledsoe
00:40:13has been on fire
00:40:15here in the first half.
00:40:22ESPN Sunday Night NFL

00:40:31directs,
00:40:31and by Bex Beer,
00:40:33the number one
00:40:33imported German beer.
00:40:37We are in San Diego
00:40:39where the Patriots
00:40:40have a 20-7 lead
00:40:42pending the extra point
00:40:43after their third touchdown.
00:40:47Ruben Davis
00:40:48took a long time
00:40:50down in the field
00:40:50and able to walk off
00:40:51under his own power.
00:40:52and then the Curry
00:40:53knocks it through
00:40:5421-7.
00:40:57Let's go to
00:40:58Mark Malone.
00:40:59Mark?
00:40:59Thanks, Mike.
00:41:00Willie Clark,
00:41:01the San Diego Chargers
00:41:02quarterback
00:41:02in our Packard Bell
00:41:03spotlight tonight.
00:41:04It's been pick out
00:41:04a weak leak
00:41:05in the secondary
00:41:05and Clark has had
00:41:07the bullseye
00:41:07on his back.
00:41:08Starting for
00:41:09Darion Gordon,
00:41:11he's been the guy
00:41:11that New England
00:41:12has gone after.
00:41:13Glenn on motion,
00:41:14turns him inside
00:41:15and runs the out.
00:41:16Then,
00:41:16on the next play,
00:41:17Weaveson versus
00:41:18press coverage.
00:41:19Gets inside.
00:41:20Just too much foot speed
00:41:21for Clark.
00:41:22And then,
00:41:22on the touchdown,
00:41:23Junior jams him,
00:41:24but that's Clark's man,
00:41:25Glenn.
00:41:26And the touchdown
00:41:27right there.
00:41:27Here are the numbers
00:41:28so far on Willie Clark.
00:41:30They have thrown at him
00:41:31four times tonight.
00:41:32They've completed
00:41:33three balls
00:41:34for 41 yards
00:41:35and a touchdown.
00:41:36Again,
00:41:37he started for
00:41:37Darion Gordon
00:41:38and I believe
00:41:39that's why New England
00:41:40is not running
00:41:41the football, Mike.
00:41:42They wanted to come out
00:41:42and throw
00:41:43against this secondary
00:41:44that's suspect.
00:41:45And a pretty good strategy
00:41:46it is, Mark.
00:41:51Clark roasted early
00:41:53and Bobby Ross
00:41:54has Darion Gordon
00:41:55in there
00:41:56in the secondary now.
00:41:58Benatari to kick
00:41:59to Andre Coleman.
00:42:03From the eighth.
00:42:07Coleman!
00:42:09A flag is down.
00:42:11Benatari to beat
00:42:12and he did it easily.
00:42:13Coleman is going to go
00:42:1592 yards,
00:42:17but there is a marker
00:42:18down.
00:42:23In fact,
00:42:23there are two.
00:42:25And back it comes.
00:42:27And when those flags
00:42:28came down,
00:42:29he was already
00:42:30past that point.
00:42:31Those blocks
00:42:32were totally unnecessary.
00:42:33a passer.
00:42:36Sometimes you don't know
00:42:37if it was a design play
00:42:38where he starts
00:42:39to the wedge
00:42:40and breaks out.
00:42:47Calling Brian Roach,
00:42:48the backup tight end
00:42:49and H-back
00:42:50for the penalty.
00:42:54And breaks back
00:42:55a huge play.
00:42:56Chuck Free for the
00:42:57special teams coach.
00:42:58Hair just got a little
00:42:59grayer.
00:43:02And a clump fell out.
00:43:10Brian Roach is the man
00:43:11they call it on.
00:43:12He's just hanging on
00:43:18and hanging on
00:43:19and hanging on.
00:43:22And you saw Coleman
00:43:23fly by in the picture.
00:43:26See what happens
00:43:26is just the initial grab,
00:43:28I think if he'd have let go
00:43:29it would have been okay.
00:43:30Freddie Bradley
00:43:36gets a carry
00:43:38and didn't quite
00:43:39make the 20-yard line
00:43:40only the 13th time
00:43:41this year.
00:43:42He has handled the ball.
00:43:44Broke all of O.J. Simpson's
00:43:45rushing record
00:43:46at Moorpark Junior College.
00:43:51Can't be any worse
00:43:52feeling for a special
00:43:53teams guy
00:43:53than to make a mistake
00:43:55and see a 92-yard
00:43:56touchdown run
00:43:57called back.
00:43:58An offensive lineman
00:43:59that's caught holding
00:44:00on a touchdown pass.
00:44:01Same kind of situation.
00:44:02You make a play
00:44:03to take some away
00:44:04from your team.
00:44:05Second and nine.
00:44:07Terrell Fletcher
00:44:07number 41 is now in there.
00:44:10Humphreys rifles
00:44:11one up to the 29-yard line.
00:44:12Very close to a first down
00:44:14and he hit Tony Martin.
00:44:18Ricky Reynolds
00:44:18made the stop.
00:44:19Let's see where they mark it.
00:44:20The stop at number 21,
00:44:22Ricky Reynolds.
00:44:29Come up just a little bit short.
00:44:32Going to wind up with third
00:44:33and about a half a yard.
00:44:37Harry Swain comes in.
00:44:38He will be an eligible receiver
00:44:40on third and short.
00:44:41I don't think you'll see
00:44:42the trickery out of the charges.
00:44:44They're just going to pound this in
00:44:45for the first half.
00:44:46Russell.
00:44:47I don't know.
00:44:53Got virtually no movement
00:44:54along the line.
00:44:58And Pio Sangapulotelli
00:44:59comes out of the pile
00:45:00saying,
00:45:01we stopped him.
00:45:05And they'll measure again.
00:45:07Mike,
00:45:07the line play
00:45:09is where you have
00:45:11to get leverage.
00:45:12Watch him.
00:45:12He's going to get lower
00:45:13than the offensive line.
00:45:14That's Mark Wheeler,
00:45:15number 97.
00:45:17See how he gets
00:45:17under angle?
00:45:19That's the big key
00:45:20in short yardage
00:45:22and goal line situations.
00:45:23It's a question of leverage.
00:45:25Wheeler had great leverage there.
00:45:28Now Russell really
00:45:30has nowhere to go
00:45:31because now all of a sudden
00:45:33he's got a blue shirted
00:45:34wall in front of him.
00:45:41That's as close
00:45:42as you can get
00:45:43without not making it.
00:45:45If he had a credit card,
00:45:46he'd have slid that
00:45:47right down in there.
00:45:49I think all these guys
00:45:51have credit cards.
00:45:54New life for San Diego.
00:45:5811-31 and counting
00:45:59in the first half.
00:46:00Already 21-7.
00:46:07Russell.
00:46:09Nice to a couple
00:46:10of tacklers
00:46:10to pick up a yard.
00:46:11No more
00:46:12than the 30-yard line.
00:46:18Even though
00:46:19San Diego is down
00:46:2021-7, Mike,
00:46:22they've moved
00:46:23the ball fairly well.
00:46:24They had one big play called,
00:46:25incomplete pass.
00:46:27The interception
00:46:28came off
00:46:29of a tipped ball.
00:46:30I don't think
00:46:30Ralph Regan
00:46:31is disappointed
00:46:32with what's going on
00:46:33on offense.
00:46:34And there's no reason
00:46:35to panic.
00:46:36Besides that,
00:46:37San Diego
00:46:37on offense
00:46:38is this kind
00:46:39of a football team.
00:46:40They have to pound it out
00:46:41to maintain control.
00:46:46Conference
00:46:46quickly to Martin.
00:46:48Stopped about a yard,
00:46:50maybe tee shy,
00:46:51of the first down.
00:46:52Tony Martin last year
00:46:55set a team record
00:46:56with 90 catches.
00:46:58And think of all
00:46:58the great receivers
00:46:59that have come
00:47:00through San Diego.
00:47:01That is his
00:47:02three-year mark.
00:47:05Tony Martin
00:47:06said he was so
00:47:07disappointed
00:47:07in his own performance
00:47:09last year
00:47:10at the end
00:47:10of the season,
00:47:11he said he would
00:47:12never leave the field
00:47:13knowing he didn't
00:47:14give his best again.
00:47:15And what really
00:47:16has happened
00:47:17is Jerry Sullivan,
00:47:18the wide receiver coach,
00:47:20basically said
00:47:20is that if you
00:47:21take this season
00:47:22and divide it up
00:47:22into 16 pieces of pie,
00:47:24he only really showed up
00:47:25for 12 in the past.
00:47:27That's not the case
00:47:27and it won't be
00:47:29the case anymore.
00:47:36Third and short again.
00:47:37Fletcher,
00:47:38nowhere to go.
00:47:38And on third and short,
00:47:45if you dance,
00:47:46you lose.
00:47:47Well, the other thing
00:47:48is Dwayne Saab,
00:47:48number 95,
00:47:50gets penetration.
00:47:51Once you get penetration
00:47:52by the defensive line,
00:47:53the corners have a chance
00:47:54to support.
00:47:55You got nowhere to go.
00:47:57It's going to be coming
00:47:57down here at the reverse angle.
00:48:00Saab gets upfield.
00:48:01Now, he gets blocked,
00:48:02but he spins out.
00:48:04Forces Fletcher
00:48:05back inside.
00:48:06That's just a great
00:48:07individual effort
00:48:07of meeting the block.
00:48:08Darren Bennett,
00:48:09the former Australian
00:48:10rules football player
00:48:11to kick to David Meggett.
00:48:19Meggett with a late
00:48:20fair catch signal
00:48:20comes over inside
00:48:21the 20 and makes it
00:48:22after a punt
00:48:23of 48 yards.
00:48:2521-7,
00:48:26Pat's second quarter.
00:48:31Bledsoe set a goal
00:48:32of 60% completions
00:48:34for the season.
00:48:35Here's how he's done.
00:48:36Games one through seven,
00:48:37a combined 54.7%.
00:48:39The team record
00:48:40was four and three.
00:48:42Game eight,
00:48:4271.1 and a win.
00:48:44Game nine,
00:48:4573.2 and a win.
00:48:47Game 10,
00:48:4870.6,
00:48:49another win.
00:48:50Game 11,
00:48:51a loss to Denver,
00:48:52only 53-7.
00:48:54Last week,
00:48:5470% and a win.
00:48:56For the season,
00:48:57he's right at 60%.
00:48:58That's almost six points
00:49:00higher than his career
00:49:01average heading into the season.
00:49:02And when he completes
00:49:0355% or better,
00:49:05the Patriots are
00:49:068-0.
00:49:08How's he doing tonight?
00:49:09Better than all of them.
00:49:10I think he's up around
00:49:1181%,
00:49:12almost 82%
00:49:13throwing the ball.
00:49:14Nine for 11
00:49:15with three TDs.
00:49:16room to run.
00:49:26Lou Bush corralled him
00:49:27around the 23.
00:49:29The Chargers defense
00:49:30has to do something
00:49:31in this series.
00:49:31Mike,
00:49:32what I have seen here
00:49:33is I have seen the line
00:49:34of scrimmage controlled
00:49:35by the New England Patriots
00:49:36on both sides of the ball.
00:49:38San Diego has not done it.
00:49:39And Drew Bledsoe has had
00:49:40the opportunity
00:49:41to be able to throw
00:49:43because the offensive line
00:49:44is doing so well.
00:49:50Second and five.
00:49:58Chargers may have
00:49:59jumped offside again
00:50:00and they whistled
00:50:01the play dead.
00:50:02Would have been
00:50:03a complete pass
00:50:03to Sean Jefferson
00:50:04but Chris Mims
00:50:05appeared to be
00:50:07across the line
00:50:07of scrimmage early.
00:50:08Before the ball was snapped,
00:50:10false start by the offense,
00:50:11number 87.
00:50:12Five-yard penalty
00:50:13will remain second down.
00:50:15But they will call
00:50:15Ben Coates for the movement
00:50:17instead.
00:50:23Bill Parcells
00:50:25was a little reluctant
00:50:26to hire Chris Palmer,
00:50:27a quarterback coach,
00:50:28to work with Drew Bledsoe.
00:50:29He finally did
00:50:30and I really think
00:50:30it's paid off.
00:50:32There's Chris Palmer
00:50:33right there.
00:50:33This is Ray Perkins
00:50:34right here.
00:50:35Between the two of you
00:50:36wind up with a pair
00:50:36of glasses.
00:50:38But Chris Palmer
00:50:38has meant so much
00:50:39to Drew Bledsoe
00:50:41from a psychological
00:50:42standpoint
00:50:42as well as a mechanical
00:50:43standpoint.
00:50:47Second and ten.
00:50:49Pressure on Bledsoe.
00:50:51The ball comes loose.
00:50:53Recovered by New England,
00:50:54Dave Rollbaugh,
00:50:55the center,
00:50:56pounced on it.
00:50:57But Chris Mims
00:50:58knocked it away.
00:50:59The first time
00:51:00they've had any
00:51:00meaningful pressure
00:51:02on Drew Bledsoe tonight.
00:51:03And that was
00:51:03without a blitz,
00:51:04Mike.
00:51:05That was just
00:51:05the front four
00:51:06up front.
00:51:09Number 68,
00:51:10Max Slade
00:51:11is blocking Mims
00:51:11on 84.
00:51:13Chris just goes
00:51:13around the outside
00:51:14and gets to Drew
00:51:16before he can get it on.
00:51:17Chris Mims
00:51:18is playing entirely
00:51:19inspired football.
00:51:21She got married
00:51:22this year.
00:51:22He said it settled
00:51:23him down.
00:51:24He's got a smile
00:51:25on his face
00:51:25all the time.
00:51:26And if he keeps
00:51:27doing that,
00:51:27Bobby Ross will
00:51:28have one too.
00:51:29Third and nine.
00:51:30The crowd comes
00:51:32to its feet.
00:51:50Bledsoe to make it.
00:51:51Juggled it
00:51:52and couldn't hold it.
00:51:53Would have been shy
00:51:54of the first down anyway.
00:51:56And again,
00:51:56pressure on Bledsoe
00:51:58for the second time
00:51:58in a row.
00:51:59John Perella
00:52:00made his presence felt.
00:52:01And when you get
00:52:02pressure on Drew Bledsoe,
00:52:03he's not going to
00:52:04be as accurate.
00:52:05He has to set
00:52:06his feet
00:52:07to be an accurate
00:52:08passer.
00:52:09That time,
00:52:09he had to keep
00:52:10him moving
00:52:10to avoid the pressure.
00:52:12The ball wasn't
00:52:12exactly where he wanted it.
00:52:14Incomplete pass.
00:52:15And for the first time,
00:52:16the San Diego
00:52:17Chargers defense
00:52:18has made a good stand.
00:52:22Darion Gordon
00:52:23with those back spasms
00:52:26waits inside
00:52:27his own corner.
00:52:30Gordon lets it go
00:52:39and it bounced out
00:52:40of bounds
00:52:40near the 30.
00:52:4249-yard punt,
00:52:43no return.
00:52:45Chargers down
00:52:45by 14.
00:52:46They'll have the ball
00:52:47when we come back.
00:52:48San Diego Harbor
00:52:53in this gorgeous city
00:52:54about two hours
00:52:55after sundown.
00:53:00Beehive of activity
00:53:01during the day
00:53:02and now the activity
00:53:03taking place
00:53:03at the Murph.
00:53:05The best starting position
00:53:06the Chargers have had
00:53:07tonight
00:53:08from their own 32.
00:53:09Freddie Bradley.
00:53:15Got a block
00:53:15on the outside
00:53:16may have also
00:53:17gotten a hold
00:53:18by Martin.
00:53:28And they'll march
00:53:29off 10
00:53:29against the Chargers.
00:53:31holding
00:53:41by the offense.
00:53:44The call goes
00:53:47against Deans May,
00:53:48the tight end
00:53:48who was in there
00:53:49in the starting spot
00:53:50because Alfred Pivuno
00:53:51who was playing
00:53:52so very well
00:53:53was injured.
00:53:55Broken bone
00:53:56in his leg.
00:53:56So it's first
00:53:59and 20
00:53:59for San Diego.
00:54:04Leonard Russell
00:54:05is back in
00:54:06as the running back.
00:54:16Humphrey's in trouble
00:54:17throws the screen
00:54:18to Russell.
00:54:20Blockers in front
00:54:22Leonard Russell
00:54:22to his own
00:54:2448-yard line
00:54:26and big Greg Engel
00:54:28the center
00:54:28was out in front
00:54:29throwing the big block
00:54:30on the screen.
00:54:32First and 20
00:54:33they gained 25.
00:54:34Stan Humphreys
00:54:35does a real nice job
00:54:36of drawing
00:54:37the defensive line
00:54:38to him.
00:54:39See how he's got
00:54:39all four of the
00:54:40defensive linemen
00:54:41there and Engel
00:54:41he does such a smart
00:54:43thing.
00:54:43A lot of offensive
00:54:44linemen turn around
00:54:46and they want a block
00:54:47behind the runner.
00:54:48He just said
00:54:49hey Leonard
00:54:49follow me
00:54:50I'm on my way.
00:54:51And Engel
00:54:52is in there
00:54:52for the great center
00:54:53Courtney Hall
00:54:54who had to go on
00:54:55IR with knee
00:54:56and shoulder
00:54:57problem.
00:54:58They thought
00:54:58it would be
00:54:59a weak length
00:54:59but he's played
00:55:00very well.
00:55:02Take first down
00:55:03for the Chargers
00:55:04Fletcher
00:55:04slipped
00:55:05still got to
00:55:06the 50 gain
00:55:07of about two.
00:55:09It is a playoff
00:55:10atmosphere
00:55:11here in San Diego.
00:55:13Remember that
00:55:14short-lived show
00:55:15called the Hat Squad?
00:55:16This is it
00:55:16right here.
00:55:17These guys
00:55:17could have been on it.
00:55:18They all retired
00:55:19here to San Diego.
00:55:20You've got
00:55:21the weave
00:55:21you've got
00:55:22lightning bolts
00:55:23I mean
00:55:24you've got people
00:55:24who missed the plane
00:55:26to Hawaii.
00:55:26Macho Camacho
00:55:27is here tonight.
00:55:30And he got his
00:55:32sundress like that.
00:55:33That's what's scary.
00:55:34Yeah.
00:55:34Second and eight.
00:55:41Humphrey's changing
00:55:41the part.
00:55:45Rifles it over the middle
00:55:46and dropped
00:55:47right in the hands
00:55:48of Andre Coleman.
00:55:49What a throw
00:55:50by Humphrey's.
00:55:51Yeah but I'll tell you
00:55:52something
00:55:52lawyer Malloy
00:55:53was lurking
00:55:54in the area.
00:55:55You're going to see
00:55:56when Coleman goes up
00:55:57his head
00:55:58is going to be
00:55:59focused on Malloy
00:56:00not the ball.
00:56:02There's number 36
00:56:03right down there.
00:56:04When this ball
00:56:05comes firing out
00:56:06that's who he's
00:56:07looking at.
00:56:08Here comes the ball
00:56:09now look at the head.
00:56:10See it?
00:56:10Just a heck
00:56:11just for a second.
00:56:13Caught a glimpse
00:56:13of lawyer lurking.
00:56:14Well there's that
00:56:15old saying
00:56:15you're going to get
00:56:16waxed anyway
00:56:16you might as well
00:56:17catch it.
00:56:18Art Monk used to
00:56:18adhere to that theory
00:56:19all the time.
00:56:20Third and eight.
00:56:22What do you got?
00:56:23I'm over here!
00:56:24He's stacked the wide
00:56:25receivers on the
00:56:26near side.
00:56:27Humphrey kills
00:56:27the other way
00:56:28that's tipped up
00:56:29in the air
00:56:29and goes out of
00:56:30bounds harmlessly.
00:56:31He was trying
00:56:32to throw for
00:56:33Bryan still
00:56:34and now the
00:56:37Chargers will have
00:56:38to punt it away
00:56:38with 5.30
00:56:39to go in the half.
00:56:40New England's
00:56:41front four
00:56:41have done a good
00:56:42job of reading
00:56:43Stan Humphrey's
00:56:44drops.
00:56:45If he sets
00:56:46short
00:56:46they go up
00:56:47in the air
00:56:48in that case
00:56:48it was Mike Jones
00:56:49number 96.
00:56:51He just says
00:56:51if Stan stops
00:56:52I'm going to stop
00:56:53and I'm going to jump
00:56:54and they've managed
00:56:55to knock a couple
00:56:56of down.
00:56:57Meggett retreats
00:56:58inside as 10
00:56:58for Darren Bennett's punt.
00:57:07A high floater.
00:57:09Meggett with a lot
00:57:09of room lets it go
00:57:11and it takes
00:57:11the bounce
00:57:12into the end zone.
00:57:14A 50-yard punt
00:57:15but a net of only
00:57:1630 past ball
00:57:17when we come back.
00:57:18The spotlight
00:57:23the league's
00:57:24premier linebacker
00:57:25hasn't made much
00:57:25of a dent tonight
00:57:26in the run
00:57:27or the pass.
00:57:27Bill Parcell said
00:57:28he didn't want
00:57:29a running back
00:57:29rocking him in the blitz.
00:57:31He jumps offside
00:57:32but look at
00:57:32two big bodies on him
00:57:33he doesn't get close
00:57:34to Bledsoe.
00:57:35Later another blitz
00:57:36they hand him off
00:57:37he gets to the quarterback
00:57:38way too late.
00:57:39When they run the football
00:57:40the book is run at him.
00:57:42Rucci
00:57:42just pulls him
00:57:43out of the way
00:57:44the big game
00:57:44for Curtis Martin.
00:57:46Here's the numbers
00:57:47so far they have
00:57:48run at Junior Sale
00:57:49eight times for 38 yards
00:57:50that's almost
00:57:51five yards a carry.
00:57:52Five and a half tackles
00:57:53three blitzes
00:57:53he hasn't got
00:57:54close to the quarterback
00:57:55no pressures
00:57:56no sacks.
00:57:57Mike?
00:57:58Alright thanks Mark
00:57:58I think these spotlights
00:58:00are a great opportunity
00:58:00to see things
00:58:01you otherwise
00:58:02would not see.
00:58:03Glenn with a catch
00:58:04up to the 35-yard line
00:58:06Gordon made the tackle
00:58:07so even though
00:58:08Gordon is in there
00:58:09for Clark
00:58:10they're not going
00:58:11to hesitate
00:58:11to go back
00:58:12to their premier guy.
00:58:13Right at the end there
00:58:14you saw the burst
00:58:15that Terry Glenn has
00:58:16he turns
00:58:17once he catches
00:58:18the ball
00:58:18he turns
00:58:19and gets upfield
00:58:20tries to square up
00:58:21on the defensive back
00:58:22and make plays
00:58:234-2-9 speed
00:58:25that'll give you
00:58:25a burst
00:58:26I wouldn't know Mike
00:58:28Martin
00:58:31wrapped up
00:58:32by Sean Lee
00:58:33Reuben Davis
00:58:34also in the area
00:58:35Davis back in there

00:58:48I'll tell you
00:58:51I can't wait
00:58:52until next golf season
00:58:53because of Tiger Woods
00:58:54I just
00:58:55I can't wait
00:58:56I wish these four months
00:58:57would just disappear
00:58:58and he could tee off
00:58:59tomorrow
00:58:59he depresses me
00:59:00I have to hit two shots
00:59:01for his run
00:59:02comes the blitz
00:59:10they dump it to Coates
00:59:11and Rodney Harrison
00:59:12waxed it
00:59:13Harrison
00:59:15at 2-0-1
00:59:16Coates at 2-45
00:59:18and it looked like
00:59:18a mismatch
00:59:19yeah but the reason was
00:59:20is Ben didn't have
00:59:21his feet on the ground
00:59:22Rodney caught
00:59:23Ben with his feet
00:59:25up in the air
00:59:25Drew does a good job
00:59:27of getting it off
00:59:28now Ben goes up
00:59:29Rodney doesn't give him
00:59:30a chance
00:59:31but to get a toe
00:59:31on the ground
00:59:32and then just leveled him
00:59:33last year he had
00:59:34five interceptions
00:59:35as a free safety
00:59:36four this year
00:59:37as a strong safety
00:59:39Megat comes in
00:59:41on third and eight
00:59:42comes the blitz
00:59:48Bledsoe in trouble
00:59:50flag down
00:59:51so is Bledsoe
00:59:52John Perrella
00:59:55who came over
00:59:55from Buffalo
00:59:56one of those
00:59:57blue collar guys
00:59:58whose motor
00:59:59just never stops
01:00:00and he's made an impact
01:00:01the big thing here
01:00:03Mike is
01:00:03they did a good job
01:00:05on the corners
01:00:06and on the
01:00:07on the tight end
01:00:08not allowing him
01:00:09to get free releases
01:00:10Drew had to hold
01:00:11the ball
01:00:11a little bit more
01:00:12by the offense
01:00:13number 22
01:00:13the penalty is declined
01:00:15brings up fourth down
01:00:17well you get a mismatch
01:00:19Junior Seau
01:00:20against who?
01:00:21Dave Meggett
01:00:23Dave can't even tackle him
01:00:25he does actually
01:00:26get him down
01:00:27that's what the
01:00:27holding penalty
01:00:28was all about
01:00:29and that's something
01:00:30that they keep track of too
01:00:32that's as good as the sack
01:00:33if you force somebody
01:00:34to hold it
01:00:34absolutely
01:00:35so this has turned
01:00:37into a defensive battle
01:00:39after the offense
01:00:39has exploded early
01:00:41Gordon waits
01:00:45at his 25
01:00:45Tupel with a beautiful
01:00:49point
01:00:49all the way back
01:00:51to the 10
01:00:51Gordon with great speed
01:00:54didn't quite make
01:00:57the corner
01:00:58brought down

01:02:08247 left
01:02:09in the head
01:02:10comes the blitz
01:02:14Humphries
01:02:16incomplete
01:02:17Jones
01:02:18got a hand
01:02:18on it
01:02:18couldn't hold it
01:02:19Lawyer
01:02:20Malloy
01:02:20was there
01:02:21Charlie Jones
01:02:26did something
01:02:27that a young
01:02:28receiver does
01:02:29he doesn't have
01:02:30to jump for this
01:02:31if he keeps running
01:02:32he's got a shot
01:02:33at it
01:02:34he keeps going
01:02:34up the field
01:02:35the ball's gonna
01:02:36be thrown to him
01:02:36he just sort of
01:02:38jumps and tries
01:02:38to make a play
01:02:39and get acrobatic
01:02:40and cute
01:02:40if he just keeps
01:02:42on running
01:02:42he can make
01:02:43a better play
01:02:44on the ball
01:02:44see him do
01:02:45two things tonight
01:02:46stop after
01:02:47what wasn't
01:02:47a catch
01:02:48could have been
01:02:48and that
01:02:48Humphries
01:02:52trying on
01:02:53third down
01:02:54under pressure
01:02:54hit lost
01:02:55the ball
01:02:56Willie McGinnis
01:02:59touchdown
01:03:00Patriots
01:03:00Chris Slade
01:03:04knocks it loose
01:03:05and now
01:03:12it's defense
01:03:13dominating
01:03:14exactly
01:03:15Stan Humphries
01:03:16instead of
01:03:17trying to do
01:03:17something smart
01:03:18tried to do
01:03:19something cute
01:03:20and got caught
01:03:21tried to make
01:03:22a play
01:03:22watch number
01:03:2353 Slade
01:03:24come around
01:03:25the corner
01:03:25now he gets
01:03:27blocked initially
01:03:27but this is
01:03:29relentless pursuit
01:03:30Stan Humphries
01:03:31trying to make
01:03:32a play
01:03:32Slade strips
01:03:33him
01:03:34and Willie McGinnis
01:03:36these guys
01:03:36were supposed
01:03:37to be the bookends
01:03:38for the New England
01:03:38Patriots
01:03:39this one paid off
01:03:40Slade has not
01:03:41been playing
01:03:41full time
01:03:42Bill Parcells
01:03:43explanation
01:03:44is they wanted
01:03:45to keep him
01:03:45fresh to use him
01:03:46more as a pass rusher
01:03:47that is his third
01:03:49forced fumble
01:03:50of the year
01:03:50and this one
01:03:51gives McGinnis
01:03:52a touchdown
01:03:53and the extra point
01:03:54gives New England
01:03:55a 21 point lead
01:03:57New England
01:04:01is going to start
01:04:02to force San Diego
01:04:03to do something
01:04:04they don't want
01:04:05spread the field out
01:04:07and throw the football
01:04:08how much of a boost
01:04:10was getting to see
01:04:11Buffalo knocked off
01:04:12on television
01:04:13earlier in the day
01:04:14for this point
01:04:14I don't think
01:04:15it matters
01:04:15for Bill Parcells
01:04:16and his ball club
01:04:17Mike
01:04:17to be honest
01:04:17with you
01:04:18they know
01:04:18that if they
01:04:19don't win tonight
01:04:20whatever happened
01:04:21to Buffalo
01:04:22at Indianapolis
01:04:22that means
01:04:23absolutely nothing
01:04:24they have to come
01:04:26out and take care
01:04:26of their own business
01:04:27they know this
01:04:28thing's going down
01:04:28to week 16
01:04:29or you know
01:04:30game 16
01:04:31it's going to be
01:04:32that way
01:04:33and for Bobby
01:04:33Ross' club
01:04:34they've got to
01:04:35come up with
01:04:35a big effort
01:04:36now
01:04:36to get something
01:04:37out of it
01:04:38turnovers
01:04:40always do it
01:04:41two takeaways
01:04:42for the Patriots
01:04:43they have two
01:04:44touchdowns
01:04:44off those mistakes
01:04:45and if you don't
01:04:51think turnovers
01:04:52tell the
01:04:53almost the entire
01:04:55story
01:04:55look at this
01:04:56if you don't
01:04:56turn a ball over
01:04:57you win 78%
01:04:58of the time
01:04:59one turnover
01:05:0062-9
01:05:01two turnovers
01:05:02now you're on
01:05:02the downside
01:05:03if you have
01:05:04three turnovers
01:05:04you only win
01:05:05one out of four games
01:05:06exactly
01:05:07and that doesn't
01:05:08change the course
01:05:09of the year
01:05:09that's the thing
01:05:10that's amazing
01:05:10the Chargers
01:05:13have dug themselves
01:05:14an enormous hole
01:05:15here down 21
01:05:16line drive kick
01:05:20Coleman on the run
01:05:21at the 12
01:05:22cuts it outside
01:05:26and Vinatieri
01:05:27forces him out
01:05:28of bounds
01:05:28at the 38
01:05:29two huge plays
01:05:35here in the first
01:05:36half that have
01:05:36turned the momentum
01:05:37of this ballgame
01:05:38the first one
01:05:39was the catch
01:05:39by Charlie Jones
01:05:40that was ruled
01:05:41incomplete
01:05:42and because of
01:05:46that the Chargers
01:05:47had to go back
01:05:47to their own
01:05:48one yard line
01:05:49and then threw
01:05:51an interception
01:05:51and here is a
01:05:52hold on the
01:05:53kickoff
01:05:53that was a
01:05:5492 yard
01:05:55touchdown return
01:05:56that was called
01:05:58back
01:05:58and then you take
01:06:00and couple that
01:06:01with great play
01:06:02by the defense
01:06:03of the New England
01:06:04Patriots
01:06:04causing an interception
01:06:06deep down in
01:06:07and also causing
01:06:08the fumble now
01:06:08for the touchdown
01:06:09you have four
01:06:10major plays
01:06:11that are responsible
01:06:12for 28 points
01:06:13in this game
01:06:13Dwayne Gordon
01:06:14the injured charger
01:06:15reserve linebacker
01:06:16limping off the field
01:06:19charges with plenty
01:06:21of time here
01:06:22222 to go
01:06:23in the half
01:06:24they really need
01:06:25to make something
01:06:25happen offensively
01:06:26Jimmy Seau
01:06:29and the defense
01:06:30have stepped it up
01:06:31a little bit
01:06:31in the last period
01:06:32Humphreys leads them out
01:06:36blitz
01:06:43Humphreys throws out
01:06:46and completes
01:06:47it to Jones
01:06:47first down
01:06:48Mike I want to tell you
01:06:49something about
01:06:49Stan Humphreys
01:06:50I've known him
01:06:50for a long time
01:06:51now this game
01:06:53has become personal
01:06:53to him now
01:06:54I mean yeah
01:06:54you want to win
01:06:55yeah you want to
01:06:56help your football team
01:06:57but when you contribute
01:06:58like he did
01:06:59to somebody else
01:07:00scoring a touchdown
01:07:00this is now
01:07:01on his shoulders
01:07:02he feels like
01:07:03this is personal
01:07:04Stan Humphreys
01:07:05has the third best record
01:07:07of any starting quarterback
01:07:08who is active
01:07:09and the best starting record
01:07:12of any quarterback
01:07:13who is still a starter
01:07:15in the NFL
01:07:15and Deans may
01:07:16drop that one
01:07:17well Stan can't throw him
01:07:19and catch him
01:07:19at the same time
01:07:20you know
01:07:20Shannon Mitchell
01:07:22drops one before
01:07:23that causes him
01:07:24to scramble around
01:07:25on the third down
01:07:25and long
01:07:26now you wind up
01:07:27with second and ten
01:07:29because Deans Mays
01:07:30drops one
01:07:31usually what happens
01:07:33to play before
01:07:34affects the one after
01:07:36another blitz
01:07:42Humphreys unloads
01:07:43that one almost
01:07:44intercepted
01:07:45and may be
01:07:46or didn't hit the ground
01:07:47Lawyer Molloy
01:07:49was there
01:07:49it is
01:07:50New England football
01:07:52I believe
01:07:53still no indications
01:07:54from the official
01:07:55which way it's going
01:07:56he pointed to the ground
01:07:58and that's all
01:07:59did that mean
01:08:00it hit the ground
01:08:00or he was down
01:08:01after he caught it
01:08:02well here goes
01:08:03our discussion again
01:08:04you see what I mean
01:08:04that interception
01:08:06comes after a drop
01:08:07pass
01:08:07the fumble
01:08:08comes after a drop
01:08:09pass
01:08:10now who saw it
01:08:13and who didn't
01:08:13the pass was intercepted
01:08:18and then the player
01:08:19was down by contact
01:08:20before the ball
01:08:21came loose
01:08:22first down
01:08:23the Patriots
01:08:26with another turnover
01:08:27and at the two minute
01:08:29warning
01:08:29they get the football
01:08:31back on a Lawyer
01:08:32Molloy
01:08:33interception
01:08:34San Diego
01:08:38the third
01:08:38of three AFC
01:08:39wildcard teams
01:08:40you see if they win
01:08:42they go up with
01:08:42right behind Kansas City
01:08:45if they lose
01:08:45they drop back
01:08:46into a three-way tie
01:08:47with Houston
01:08:47and Indianapolis
01:08:48the Patriots
01:08:49the game is even bigger
01:08:50because they have
01:08:51the division tiebreaker
01:08:52on Buffalo
01:08:53with the Bills losing today
01:08:54they would lead
01:08:55the AFC East
01:08:56if they can hang on
01:08:57to what they have now
01:08:58which is a 28-7 lead
01:09:00and a chance for more points
01:09:03Martin on the draw
01:09:04hitting the backfield
01:09:05still gets a couple
01:09:06out of it
01:09:07this is a good job
01:09:09by Lawyer Molloy
01:09:10we saw the drop
01:09:11pass before
01:09:11now all of a sudden
01:09:13the Patriots come
01:09:14with a blitz
01:09:14that makes Stan Humphries
01:09:15get it off quick
01:09:16and Lawyer
01:09:17he does get underneath it
01:09:18and you'll see
01:09:18he manages to catch it
01:09:20with his knees
01:09:21that's a good call
01:09:22by the official
01:09:23that one was well done
01:09:25even after the conference
01:09:27I agree with him
01:09:28second and nine
01:09:30Glenn
01:09:38leaping catch
01:09:39then dropped it
01:09:39Darian Gordon
01:09:41was out there
01:09:42much better coverage
01:09:43by Darian Gordon
01:09:44than Willie Clark
01:09:44was giving earlier
01:09:45Mike in my opinion
01:09:46this is the
01:09:48this is the crucial
01:09:48down in the game
01:09:50for the San Diego Chargers
01:09:51if they can stop him here
01:09:53make New England punt
01:09:54they will get the ball
01:09:55back with a chance
01:09:56to put some points
01:09:57on the board
01:09:57if they now allow
01:09:58England to
01:09:59New England to convert
01:10:00I think they'll be
01:10:01in a position
01:10:02to add some points
01:10:03and put this game
01:10:04further out of reach
01:10:05for the Chargers
01:10:06and San Diego
01:10:06does have all of its
01:10:07timeouts left
01:10:08Megan in the ball game
01:10:14for the Patriots
01:10:15Seah out comes on the blitz
01:10:19doesn't get there
01:10:20again the pass
01:10:21complete to Jefferson
01:10:22Sean Jefferson
01:10:24down to the
01:10:2430 yard line
01:10:25first down
01:10:26in the England game
01:10:27of 23
01:10:28he turned somebody around
01:10:30again you've got to
01:10:31go back to the
01:10:32pass protection
01:10:33Drew Bledsoe
01:10:33is being able
01:10:35to stand solid
01:10:36in a pocket
01:10:36and make a play
01:10:38Sean Jefferson
01:10:39you've got to
01:10:40respect his speed
01:10:41watch to the left
01:10:41he's five yards
01:10:42wide open
01:10:43Shaw's running
01:10:44down the field
01:10:45trying to keep up
01:10:46with him
01:10:46and then he does
01:10:47a smart thing
01:10:47gets out of bounds
01:10:48understands where
01:10:50there he is
01:10:50in the game
01:10:51the long time
01:10:53charger
01:10:53who left
01:10:56with a reputation
01:10:56of dropping
01:10:57a lot of balls
01:10:58but he has done
01:10:58much better
01:10:59than the regular
01:11:00fake end around
01:11:03caught at the sideline
01:11:06by Martin
01:11:07and now out of bounds
01:11:09is the roll no catch
01:11:11what a throw
01:11:13by Bledsoe
01:11:13what a throw
01:11:15what a one
01:11:15another one handed catch
01:11:17yeah
01:11:17I mean
01:11:17it's like
01:11:18Terry Grant and
01:11:19Curtis Martin are
01:11:20seeing who can have
01:11:21a better one handed catch
01:11:22but just watch
01:11:23his left hand
01:11:24Gordon's got it
01:11:26that's one handed
01:11:26there's the one step
01:11:28the other one
01:11:29lands out of bounds
01:11:30oh look at this
01:11:34boy is he good
01:11:37he's not only
01:11:38explosive
01:11:39tough runner
01:11:40he's an excellent
01:11:41receiver
01:11:41the Patriots
01:11:42with a chance
01:11:43to pile it on
01:11:44already leading
01:11:4428-7
01:11:46Bledsoe
01:11:48with a quick toss
01:11:49Glenn can't handle
01:11:49it
01:11:50that was tipped
01:11:51by Chris Mims
01:11:52who really got a
01:11:54hand up in a hurry
01:11:54see Bill Parcells
01:12:00need a little more
01:12:01arc on that
01:12:02get it up
01:12:03just a little bit
01:12:03call timeout
01:12:04I want to talk to you
01:12:05come here
01:12:05come here
01:12:06get over here
01:12:07you can hear Bill
01:12:08come here
01:12:08you never like that
01:12:12sign from the sidelines
01:12:12you have to timeout
01:12:13get over here
01:12:14I never liked
01:12:16the come over here
01:12:17part of it
01:12:18I could handle
01:12:19the timeout
01:12:20but you can always
01:12:21tell when Joe
01:12:22used to
01:12:22when Joe never
01:12:23was very vocal
01:12:24Bill's a little bit
01:12:24more vocal
01:12:25on the sidelines
01:12:26Joe would
01:12:27always be thinking
01:12:28and talking
01:12:28and you know
01:12:30Joe Buger
01:12:30was the one
01:12:31who was always
01:12:31yelling at me
01:12:31I'm thinking
01:12:32what are you yelling
01:12:32at me for
01:12:33I've got to find
01:12:33how to play here
01:12:34but
01:12:34it was that
01:12:36timeout
01:12:37that used to get you
01:12:37coming up
01:12:43at halftime
01:12:44Chris Berman
01:12:44will be there
01:12:45with all the highlights

01:12:48those battling
01:12:49Colts
01:12:50and we'll take a look
01:12:51at the Skins game
01:12:52Tom Watson
01:12:53must have felt
01:12:54like he was driving
01:12:55with a five iron
01:12:55for two days
01:12:56but Tom did just fine
01:12:59represented the older
01:13:02generation very very well
01:13:03third and ten here
01:13:07let's go under pressure
01:13:18Coleman had him
01:13:19and he threw it away
01:13:20now the question is
01:13:24was Drew Bledsoe
01:13:25out of the pocket
01:13:26no
01:13:26well if he wasn't
01:13:28out of the pocket
01:13:28Mike it should have
01:13:29been intentional grounding
01:13:30remember
01:13:30the pocket runs
01:13:31all the way back
01:13:32outside
01:13:33the pocket runs
01:13:34all the way back
01:13:35here
01:13:35I mean out
01:13:36all the way
01:13:37if he doesn't get
01:13:38outside here
01:13:39it should be
01:13:40intentional grounding
01:13:41here comes the pressure
01:13:42here comes the pressure
01:13:44he just
01:13:45he's out
01:13:45yep
01:13:46just as get out
01:13:47good call
01:13:48the ball has to get
01:13:49to or about the line
01:13:50of scrimmage
01:13:51Vinatieri will try
01:13:52a 47 yard field goal
01:13:53his long one this year
01:13:54is 50
01:13:55he's got the distance
01:13:58and the direction
01:13:58Adam Vinatieri
01:14:01knocks it through
01:14:02so that big third down
01:14:03play for New England
01:14:05results in another
01:14:06three points
01:14:07and they lead it
01:14:0831 to 7
01:14:09Bobby Ross
01:14:14looks a little bit
01:14:15shell-shocked right now
01:14:16well you know
01:14:17I mean
01:14:17it's been the big
01:14:18mistakes that have
01:14:19hurt them
01:14:19their football team
01:14:20has moved the ball
01:14:21offensively
01:14:22they've had some
01:14:23opportunities to make
01:14:24plays
01:14:24they haven't been
01:14:25on the field long enough
01:14:26because they've hurt
01:14:27themselves
01:14:27and now they're
01:14:29basically going to
01:14:29come out of what
01:14:30they like to do
01:14:31and that's have
01:14:32everything come off
01:14:33the run
01:14:33and the play-action
01:14:34fate
01:14:34you mentioned
01:14:37the strokes
01:14:38and that is what
01:14:39has killed
01:14:40the San Diego
01:14:41Chargers
01:14:42tip ball at the
01:14:43goal line
01:14:43the interception
01:14:44by Johnson
01:14:44here's the fumble
01:14:46caused by Slade
01:14:47recovered by McGinnis
01:14:48to the end zone
01:14:49for an easy
01:14:50seven points
01:14:51and then Lawyer
01:14:52Malloy
01:14:53with the interception
01:14:54three turnovers
01:14:5617 points
01:14:58for the New England
01:14:59Patriots
01:14:59they have been
01:15:00extremely opportunistic
01:15:02Coleman
01:15:07deep to receive
01:15:08Vinatieri's kick
01:15:09from the 11
01:15:10runs into the pile
01:15:14gets near the 30
01:15:16with 47 seconds
01:15:17to go in the half
01:15:18late penalty marker
01:15:22comes down
01:15:23the indication
01:15:28against San Diego
01:15:30well it's been that
01:15:33kind of night
01:15:33for the Chargers
01:15:34oh and a personal
01:15:38foul
01:15:39that is a look
01:15:45of disbelief
01:15:45and I imagine
01:15:48a bit of disgust
01:15:49as well
01:15:49personal foul
01:15:54by the receiving
01:15:55Vernon Edwards
01:16:02watch number 95
01:16:09in the middle
01:16:10all right
01:16:11basically everybody's
01:16:12down
01:16:12when you come in
01:16:13that late
01:16:14and hit
01:16:14what is Vernon
01:16:15Edwards thinking
01:16:16whatever it was
01:16:18he's going to have
01:16:19to explain it
01:16:20to Bobby Ross
01:16:20I don't think
01:16:23he's got an
01:16:23explanation for that
01:16:24one
01:16:24so instead of
01:16:25being at the 30
01:16:26they're back
01:16:27to the 15
01:16:27Terrell Fletcher
01:16:30is in there
01:16:31as the single
01:16:33running back
01:16:33here comes the
01:16:35blitz against
01:16:35Comfort
01:16:36unloads over the
01:16:37middle
01:16:37almost intercepted
01:16:38again
01:16:38Malloy had his
01:16:40hands on it
01:16:40intended for
01:16:41Cole
01:16:41I'll tell you
01:16:42that's a heck
01:16:42of a call
01:16:43by Al Groh
01:16:44normally at the
01:16:45end of a half
01:16:46defensive coaches
01:16:47like to lay back
01:16:48and what play
01:16:50what I call
01:16:50a prevent defense
01:16:51which is basically
01:16:52prevent you from
01:16:52winning
01:16:53but here he's
01:16:54bringing corners
01:16:54watch the left
01:16:55side
01:16:55here come the
01:16:56safeties
01:16:57off the left
01:16:58side
01:16:59there it is
01:16:59forcing Stan
01:17:00to throw the
01:17:00ball earlier
01:17:01than he wants
01:17:02they wind up
01:17:02with the
01:17:02incompletion
01:17:03and Lawyer
01:17:04Malloy
01:17:04the rookie
01:17:05read it all
01:17:06the way
01:17:06Bill Parcell
01:17:07says he has
01:17:08a chance
01:17:08to be one
01:17:09of the best
01:17:10Humphreys in
01:17:12trouble
01:17:12Stan on the run
01:17:14too low
01:17:14for Fletcher
01:17:15incomplete
01:17:16and the
01:17:18scattering of
01:17:19booze
01:17:19throughout
01:17:19Jack Murphy
01:17:20Stadium
01:17:21well you may
01:17:23you may not
01:17:24like what's
01:17:25happening on
01:17:25San Diego's
01:17:26offense
01:17:26but you're
01:17:27not going
01:17:27to see a
01:17:27change in
01:17:28quarterback
01:17:28trust me
01:17:29oh no
01:17:29because you
01:17:30know Stan's
01:17:30taking this
01:17:31ship all
01:17:31the way to
01:17:32the harbor
01:17:32if he has
01:17:33to
01:17:33that's a
01:17:34good job
01:17:35by Bill
01:17:35Belichick's
01:17:36defensive
01:17:37backfield
01:17:37too
01:17:37he's taken
01:17:38over and
01:17:38done a
01:17:38terrific job
01:17:39coaching
01:17:39those guys
01:17:40and this
01:17:41is the
01:17:41defense that
01:17:41is still
01:17:42ranked 28th
01:17:43in the NFL
01:17:43they're not
01:17:44playing like
01:17:45it tonight
01:17:45Humphrey
01:17:47throws a
01:17:48strike to
01:17:49the sideline
01:17:50it may be
01:17:50short of
01:17:51the first
01:17:51down
01:17:51Coleman made
01:17:52the catch
01:17:52but he is
01:17:53going to be
01:17:54short of
01:17:54the marker
01:17:55if you're
01:17:56Bobby Ross
01:17:57in my opinion
01:17:58you have to
01:17:58try and go
01:17:59for it
01:18:00I mean
01:18:00if you
01:18:00don't go
01:18:01for it
01:18:01that means
01:18:02you're just
01:18:02going to
01:18:02punt it
01:18:03and let
01:18:03the half
01:18:03run out
01:18:03but if
01:18:04you go
01:18:04for it
01:18:05there's
01:18:05only 32
01:18:05seconds to
01:18:06go in
01:18:06a half
01:18:06you might
01:18:07not get
01:18:07anything
01:18:07out of
01:18:08it
01:18:08anyhow
01:18:09Mike
01:18:09you're
01:18:09down
01:18:0931-7
01:18:10I know
01:18:12but you
01:18:12don't want
01:18:13to be
01:18:13down 38-7
01:18:14I agree
01:18:15with that
01:18:15and I
01:18:15don't disagree
01:18:16with what
01:18:16he's doing
01:18:17by punting
01:18:17here
01:18:18just a thought
01:18:19food for thought
01:18:20coming around
01:18:21at halftime
01:18:22I'm sure
01:18:22a point
01:18:23well made
01:18:23Bennett to
01:18:25kick to
01:18:25Meggett
01:18:26returnable

01:18:29if Meggett
01:18:30can get there
01:18:31we'll take it
01:18:32on the hop
01:18:33near the 30
01:18:33and got
01:18:36five yards
01:18:36out of it

01:19:45well the

01:19:46turned to
01:19:47December
01:19:47and that
01:19:48means our
01:19:48focus in
01:19:49the NFL
01:19:49turns a
01:19:50little bit
01:19:50to the
01:19:51postseason
01:19:51and we
01:19:51were reminded
01:19:52today
01:19:52how important
01:19:54that home
