00:00:00Welcome back, everybody. It is halftime, New England 7 and Indianapolis 6. I'm
00:00:06Charlie Jones, this is Sam Bertigliano. In the locker room, it has to be a Colts
00:00:11first half. They wanted to stay close and hope to capitalize on the second half.
00:00:14What will both of the coaches talk about? Well, the Colts have not run a ton, but
00:00:18they have really controlled their side of the line of scrimmage. If they equal
00:00:22the 65 yards in the second half, get 10 or 15 more yards, they'll be right where
00:00:27they are. They should be every week, and that's how they're going to stay close. I
00:00:30think what the Pats are going to do right now is open up. They're going to
00:00:34try to get the ball upfield to Fryer and to Morgan and open it up a little bit,
00:00:39because I think they've been tentative the first half and kind of sat on the
00:00:42ball for a long period of time. So you got a wide open play on one side,
00:00:45conservative play on the other side. Reflected in the statistics and the 65
00:00:50yards rushing of the Colts, conservative offensively, but that is their key. No
00:00:55question about it, but they can't turn the football over as they did in the
00:00:59first half and gave the Pats an opportunity to get on the board. It was,
00:01:04of course, the tip pass. Rod McSwain tipped it. Fred Merrion intercepted it. We
00:01:09turned it to the 24-yard line of the Colts, and in two plays, Grogan to Morgan
00:01:14for the touchdown pass. They were leading at, they being the Colts, were leading
00:01:176-0 at that point in as much as they had missed the extra point at Jim.
00:01:22And he really gave the touchdown on the turnover to New England. Pagel was
00:01:27tentative all along, and he just lost the football. There's Steve Grogan, and he
00:01:33has had outstanding stats in the second half. They've lost a football game in the
00:01:39first quarter, and they've virtually won games in the fourth quarter. I look for
00:01:43Grogan right now to loosen up this defense on the Colts, and the Colts
00:01:47defense is playing very well because they're not giving up the big play. I
00:01:51think that Grogan now is going to get the ball upfield, and, of course, Mike
00:01:55Pagel, who started off slow, is going to give the football to his two backs and
00:02:00take a lot of pressure off himself. Pagel was sacked seven times last week,
00:02:0617 on the year. He was sacked twice in the first half. He was sacked three
00:02:11times in the first half, and Grogan was sacked twice for the Colts defense.
00:02:15Actually, the Colts came into the game with 17 sacks, and only Miami and
00:02:19Pittsburgh had less. You talked about the fourth quarter. Well, this is the fourth
00:02:24quarter of the games this year. The last three games, Grogan as a starter. So, it
00:02:30has been a slow first and third quarter. Okay, in the second,
00:02:34from a scoring dynamite fourth period. I think the reason for that is the fact
00:02:39that he didn't play for 18 games for almost a year and a half, and it takes
00:02:43him time to get in the groove and feel his receivers and get a better feeling
00:02:47of the game plan. And I might add that Steve Grogan, when he took over, Raymond
00:02:52Berry decided for him to call his own plays, where Tony Easton didn't prior to
00:02:57that. Tony Franklin will be kicking off for New England. Robbie Martin is the
00:03:02deep back on the return for the Indianapolis Colts with Keith Lee and
00:03:06Albert Bentley off on the wing. 7-6 New England leads it as we start the
00:03:12second half here at Sullivan Stadium.
00:03:19Return from two yards deep in the end zone. Outside the 20, the gamble phase
00:03:25off, a return of 26 yards to the 24-yard line as Mosey Satupu makes the tackle
00:03:32for the special teams of the New England Patriots. So, the Colts will go to work.
00:03:36Still in their own territory, first down. Basically, Mike Fagle, a quarterback,
00:03:41Wansley and McMillan, the two running backs, Capers and Butler, the wide
00:03:45receivers, and Pat Beech is the tight end. Hinton up, Donaldson soaked.
00:03:49Balderschweiler started a right tackle, but Kevin Call has replaced him most of
00:03:54the first half, and Balderschweiler is back in to start the second half. 24-yard
00:03:59line, Colts in their own territory, first down. And McMillan just leans for a
00:04:05couple to the 26. It'll be second down and eight as Dennis Owens makes the
00:04:09tackle. The defense for the Patriots has Simms, Owens, and Adams as your basic
00:04:14front three. Linebackers are Tippett, Rembert, McGrew, and Blackman. Remember
00:04:18that Steve Nelson is out with an eye injury that he had in the first half
00:04:22during practice this week. Kind of a freak thing. He was hit in the eye with a
00:04:25football. Be out four or five days, and we're not really sure if he'll be able
00:04:29to play next week, or yet doctors will determine that. Lippitt, James, Marion, and
00:04:33Claiborne in the secondary. Second down and eight.
00:04:40Pagel to the far side to Wansley and very close to being a lateral or a
00:04:45backward pass. Blackman was going after it. It'll be third down and eight.
00:04:53Pagel's looking to the sideline right now for that third and eighth
00:04:58call to come in from the sideline from Rod Dauhauer. He got rid of that
00:05:02ball fast. The Patriots are really coming hard on the outside trying to stop that
00:05:07screen pass. Third down and eight. Now the Patriots are first in the National
00:05:11Football League in third down defense, and on third downs today the Colts, they
00:05:15are one for eight. And that's why they're punting a lot.
00:05:21Curtis Dickey and Albert Bentley are the two backs in the shotgun. The pass
00:05:27completed at the 30-yard line to Capers, but that will be shy of the first down.
00:05:32Needed eight, got four. Fourth down and four is Rod McQuaid of the Patriots was
00:05:36there at the 30, and that means that the kicking team will come on. Ron Stark
00:05:41will be putting, and Irving Pryor will be set for the return. With the
00:05:45possibility of a return of 15 to 20 yards somewhere in that neighborhood, the
00:05:51Patriots could start their offense in the second half with excellent field
00:05:53positions. Stark is not kicking well today, and he certainly is not kicking
00:05:57well against the wind.
00:06:02And he gets a good one this time against the wind, taken at the 28-yard line, and
00:06:10his return to the 41-yard line. So he has 13 yards on the return. Pat beats down
00:06:15very quickly for the Colts. A 41-yard kick for Ron Stark. So New England will
00:06:23go to work. Their basic set is Steve Grogan, a quarterback, with Collins and
00:06:27James the running backs, Pryor and Morgan the wide receivers, Dawson the
00:06:31tight end of that offensive line, a Holloway, Hannah, Morris, Bluton, and Moore.
00:06:35Defensively for the Colts, Thompson, White, and Scott the front three, Johnny
00:06:40Cooks, Odom, Kraus, and Bickett are the linebackers with Davis and Daniel in the
00:06:45corners, Vaz going young at the safety. First down for New England, the ball at
00:06:50their own 41-yard line.
00:06:58And Grogan comes out throwing, deep over the middle, and it's there. Big first down to Stanley Morgan, 24 yards on the opening
00:07:09offensive thrust of the second half for the Patriots.
00:07:14It's the second half, big plays, Stanley is going against his own, he goes to the
00:07:20outside, inside, breaks to the outside, and 38, Daniel does not give him too much of a
00:07:26cushion because he's afraid of getting deep.
00:07:36The call, roughing the passer on Donnell Thompson, added to the end of the play, and it becomes an even bigger play.
00:07:4622-yard line. There we see Copeland now on the sideline warming up, and he may be
00:07:51getting ready to come in this football game for Pagel. The corners are too loose,
00:07:55they're afraid of Fryer and Morgan, and trying to get feet deep. They've got to
00:07:59close down and shorten up their drop shot. At the Indianapolis, just outside the
00:08:05Colts 22-yard line. Reverse! They missed the ball, the reverse of the fumble, and it is recovered by Indianapolis.
00:08:13The Colts on the turnover.
00:08:1830th turnover on the year for New England, they lead the NFL, and it was
00:08:23Dwayne Bickett who recovered the fumble. The ball is being pitched to 32, Craig James.
00:08:30He hands the ball off to Morgan, but Morgan doesn't get the ball in the
00:08:35pocket. It's not important to run, it's important to make sure that exchange is
00:08:40made, and I don't know that I agree with that call at this stage in the game when
00:08:44they had excellent field position and a good opportunity to go in for the field
00:08:48goal or the touchdown. Matt Koeffler is the quarterback. The Colts have it at
00:08:54their own 30-yard line. First down, the second time on offense, second half, they
00:08:58make the quarterback change. Here's George Washington.
00:09:02For the Colts, Patriots have it, Brent Marriott.
00:09:19A free safety should be around the ball. Once he turns up inside, he's got good
00:09:25blocking, he gets positive yardage, and there's Freddie Marion who had the
00:09:29interception. Now he picks up the fumble, and they're fortunate now that 75
00:09:34Hustle logo, because that thing had touchdown written all over it.
00:09:37So we have an exchange of turnovers, and New England has the ball at the Indianapolis 22-yard line.
00:09:44First down.
00:09:51Here's Tony Collins, just leaning to about the 18-yard line. He'll be second down in six.
00:09:57Today's telecast presented by authority of the National Football League,
00:10:01intended for the private use of our audience, any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast
00:10:05without the express written consent of the New England Patriots and the National Football League,
00:10:09is prohibitive.
00:10:14The ball at the Colts' 18-yard line, second down in six. New England leads it 7-6,
00:10:20and we have 11.58 left to go in the third quarter.
00:10:24Just a little swing to James, and James will have a yard. That's about it for the 17.
00:10:30Donnell Thompson with the tackle, so it'll be third down in five.
00:10:34But the Patriots are well within the field goal range of Tony Franklin.
00:10:38They have a key down right now, because it's a four-point play.
00:10:42If they can turn it over and get the first down, have an opportunity to get a touchdown.
00:10:46I think that's what they need right now, to take this turnover and get in there and get a touchdown.
00:10:51Because this defense of the Colts will stretch, but they'll never really break.
00:10:55They don't give up the big play. Let's look for them to go to the back right now,
00:10:59maybe Collins coming out of the backfield.
00:11:04It'll play action, fake to the reverse. Meanwhile,
00:11:08Cliff Odom is there for the sack, and that is the third in the ballgame for the Colts.
00:11:13A very slow developing play, I'm surprised with that call also.
00:11:16They were faking a reverse, and they were trying to get the ball to Collins upfield.
00:11:21But what you need to do is just drop back and throw the ball.
00:11:24Fake it right here, fake the reverse again. It takes too much time.
00:11:28You have a breakdown. He never even gets an opportunity to look upfield.
00:11:32And 92, Brad White makes the play. Again, I really don't care for the play.
00:11:3793, Cliff Odom, the linebacker, made the play.
00:11:41Fourth down and 12.
00:11:44So from the 31-yard line, an attempt of 41 yards by Tony Franklin.
00:11:52And he's got it from 41 yards away.
00:11:56So with 10.42 left in the third, Patriots lead it.
00:12:00And Tony Franklin will be kicking off for the New England Patriots.
00:12:05Robbie Martin is the deep back on the return for the Indianapolis Colts.
00:12:0910.42, time remaining, third quarter.
00:12:12Patriots out in front by 4.
00:12:1410 to 6 from 3 yards deep is going to run this one out.
00:12:17He got away from 2 yards deep this time. He does not get away with it.
00:12:21And Martin is cut down at the 14-yard line.
00:12:24We'll give him 16, maybe 17 yards on the return as McSwain was there for the Patriots.
00:12:30So the Colts' offense with a very poor field position at their own 14-yard line.
00:12:35And Matt Cofer, the quarterback.
00:12:38He should never have taken that ball that deep in the end zone
00:12:41because he could have lined up on a 20-yard line.
00:12:44And the two deep backs with him there should have kept him in.
00:12:47Coaches work on that all the time.
00:12:52Capers comes wide to this side.
00:12:55And Oliver Williams, the free agent from the University of Illinois,
00:12:58his brother Danny, plays there.
00:13:00An outstanding wide receiver.
00:13:02He's on the far side. This pass is complete.
00:13:05And then fumble!
00:13:07A scramble for it.
00:13:09Downfield picked up by Johnny Rembert.
00:13:12Rembert just pulls his way like a sledgehammer back to the 33.
00:13:18Williams, the original receiver on it.
00:13:2410 yards on the return for Rembert.
00:13:28And that was a first down up around the 40-yard line.
00:13:32And the Colts right now are self-destructing.
00:13:35Interception. Another fumble.
00:13:37Now another fumble.
00:13:38You can see the consternation on the face of Rod Dauhauer.
00:13:41He throws the ball upfield to Oliver Williams.
00:13:44Makes the catch. Now tucks the ball.
00:13:46He gets the hit and it bounces out.
00:13:48Now it looks like Times Square on New Year's Eve.
00:13:51Capers should have picked it up himself.
00:13:53And Johnny Rembert, 52, picks it up.
00:13:55He's going deep.
00:13:59No.
00:14:02Not in the field of play.
00:14:05Breyer just trying to take the ball right in the corner of the end zone.
00:14:10Ran out of room. Eugene Daniel was there for the defense.
00:14:12Second down and 10.
00:14:14Back of the Colts' 33-yard line.
00:14:23The Colts have to take the defense off the field.
00:14:25The defense in the second half right now has virtually been on there the entire time.
00:14:30And the Patriots, being a fourth-quarter team, is going to wear them down.
00:14:34This game could blow wide open if the Colts don't get something established.
00:14:39Second and 10.
00:14:46Breyer and Morgan, the wide receivers.
00:14:48Hand off. And James to the 30.
00:14:52Shifts the ball to the left hand to be away from the tackler.
00:14:55He picks up about eight on the play.
00:14:57Cliff Odom finally took him out of bounds, along with Barry Krause.
00:15:06At this point, Charlie, I look for the Pats to go right at him.
00:15:10To really try to overpower them and run the ball over John Hanna and Brian Holloway
00:15:16and try to power this thing in in the running game.
00:15:19And then maybe a play-action pass into the end zone.
00:15:23But nothing fancy.
00:15:26Third down and a yard. Greg Hawthorne has come in.
00:15:29Moshe Tatufu has come in.
00:15:31Steve Moore is in the backfield with Tatufu.
00:15:34The house is there.
00:15:37The house, the lead, Hawthorne, Tatufu.
00:15:42They needed a yard. I think they got it.
00:15:47But the house, 67, Steve Moore.
00:15:49There you see him in the back. This time as a lead blocker.
00:15:52He does need a little work on that play.
00:15:54The house was a little vacant that time. It wasn't rented.
00:15:57And Mosse did not have...
00:16:03John Hanna is on the ground, but they don't need very much.
00:16:07And they have a... Mosse is an excellent runner in short yardage.
00:16:10He's been that way for eight years,
00:16:12and he's going to pick up the yardage needed for the first down.
00:16:15And the change has come out on the measurement.
00:16:18I thought that they had it, and they do.
00:16:23Ah, with at least a foot to spare.
00:16:33First down, 22 yard line of the Colts.
00:16:50That's Fryer in motion. He becomes the lead blocker.
00:16:53Tony Collins the ball carrier.
00:16:57He may end up losing a little on the play.
00:16:59Cliff Odom was the man who was there for the Colts, along with Dwayne Becker.
00:17:04Give him the line of scrimmage. He'll mark it a yard to the 21.
00:17:07He'll be second down and nine.
00:17:09This is a tough team to run wide on.
00:17:12It's a team that you have to go right at them.
00:17:15And I think that's the strength of the Pack.
00:17:17They've got those big, strong blockers,
00:17:19and I would go right at them rather than try to run wide.
00:17:22You pointed out, and we've talked about it a couple of times,
00:17:24Steve Grogan not playing an 18 ball.
00:17:26He's basically calling his own plays.
00:17:28He had his own list with him.
00:17:31He better change his watch.
00:17:34Grogan battles his way to the 18 yard line, so he'll scramble for three.
00:17:38It'll be third down and six.
00:17:40Johnny Cooks makes the tackle.
00:17:47He's dropping back, looking to his left,
00:17:49and he seems to not be able to see the defense.
00:17:52And Johnny Cooks, 98, makes the play.
00:17:57And Morgan is the first thing to look at.
00:17:58Let's see if Morgan is open.
00:18:00And he is.
00:18:01Oh, no, Barry Krause, 55, does an excellent job
00:18:04of getting underneath that hook pattern
00:18:06that Morgan was settled right in that zone to catch.
00:18:09Third down and six.
00:18:11The Colts have six in the secondary.
00:18:15Pass is low but caught at the 11 yard line.
00:18:18Should be the first down.
00:18:21Here, pull it in.
00:18:22Eugene Daniel and Tate Randall grab him.
00:18:27He'll be right past the first down marker.
00:18:30Let's take a look at the scoreboard.
00:18:37Rams in front of the Giants, 16 to 7.
00:18:40Mike Lansford with a 26 yard field goal.
00:18:44Minnesota, 14, Green Bay, 6.
00:18:46Darren Nelson scoring from four yards out.
00:18:49Last run in that ballgame.
00:18:50And here, it is New England 10.
00:18:52And Indianapolis 6, last touchdown in that ballgame.
00:18:55Not the last run, of course.
00:18:56First and 10 at the Colt 11 yard line.
00:19:01Look for them to run the ball.
00:19:03No, they're not.
00:19:04They're going to put the ball up on first down.
00:19:07Now, Grogan was simply dumping it off.
00:19:11But close enough to Tony Collins that he got away with it.
00:19:14Odom and Bickett almost picked off the sack.
00:19:17And that shows you what a veteran quarterback can do.
00:19:19This is a resilient defense.
00:19:22He's trying to go deep.
00:19:23He's trying to get the ball up field deep.
00:19:2598 is clean again.
00:19:27And he's coming from behind.
00:19:28He's being forced right there by number 95 on the Colts.
00:19:32And that's Chris Scott.
00:19:34And again, I don't know why they're not running the football right at the Colts.
00:19:42Grogan, 9 of 17, 119 yards.
00:19:44One touchdown, no interception.
00:19:46Second and 10, and we've got jumping.
00:19:48John had it offside.
00:19:51So that will bring it back out to the 16.
00:19:53It will be second down and 15.
00:20:08In penalties, the Colts four times for 35 yards.
00:20:11The Patriots three times for 15.
00:20:15Second and 15.
00:20:16The ball now at the 16-yard line.
00:20:187.23 time remaining.
00:20:20We're in the third quarter.
00:20:21The Patriots lead by four, 10 to six.
00:20:33And here's Kane.
00:20:34Hopsin pass.
00:20:35He's going to run it.
00:20:37Down the sidelines and out of bounds.
00:20:40Donnell Thompson finally chased him out.
00:20:44Let's see where they mark him out is in the neighborhood of the five-yard line.
00:20:49What an excellent weapon this is.
00:20:51He's completed two to Collins this year for touchdowns.
00:20:54He's looking for it, looking for it.
00:20:56It's not there.
00:20:57Now he tucks the ball down, and he's got the ability to run, to catch, and to throw,
00:21:02and there aren't very many like that in the National Football League.
00:21:06A gain of 11 yards on the play from the 16 to the five.
00:21:11And it's third down and four.
00:21:13That's the Colts' five-yard line.
00:21:17I don't think they're going to run the ball.
00:21:23Timing batter left hand.
00:21:25It's there.
00:21:33Irving Fryer.
00:21:45This is impossible to stop.
00:21:47If he gets the ball up quick, high, and to the outside,
00:21:51Eddie Fryer makes the play, and the corner, 38, could not recover.
00:21:56It was just excellent timing on the play on the part of the quarterback and the receiver.
00:22:01It's impossible to stop.
00:22:06Brogan's second touchdown pass of the ball game.
00:22:09His fifth of the year.
00:22:10The extra point is good.
00:22:12So the score is now New England 17, Indianapolis 6,
00:22:16and we'll be back with a kickoff.
00:22:20The Colts' two touchdown drives of 33 yards and a 24 yards,
00:22:23and they really haven't been able to move long distances against the Colts' defense.
00:22:27Colts' defense is playing well, but they're on the field too much in the second half.
00:22:32The Colts need right now to get a drive going
00:22:35and put some points on the board and get back in this football game.
00:22:39Albert Bentley is the return man for the Colts.
00:22:45And he just keeps coming to the 37-yard line,
00:22:49chasing Robbie Martin.
00:22:50Martin made that bad choice in the end zone.
00:22:54Ed Williams with the tackle for the Patriots,
00:22:57and let's go back to the touchdown.
00:23:00Brogan's got to get the ball up quick, high, to the outside.
00:23:04Corner is trying desperately to recover,
00:23:07but it just is impossible because you can't put pressure on the quarterback,
00:23:12and it's a tremendous amount of pressure on the cornerback.
00:23:1535 yards on the return for Albert Bentley,
00:23:18the rookie taken in the second round of the draft in 1984,
00:23:22played his collegiate ball at Miami.
00:23:25Topler, the ball is tipped. It's in the air. It's incomplete.
00:23:30Andre Tippett went after it. What a ballgame he is having.
00:23:34And it'll be second down and 10 for the Colts at the 37-yard line.
00:23:37Let's go back to what you were talking about
00:23:40for the keys to the game at the top of the telecast.
00:23:44Running isn't everything. It's the only thing.
00:23:46They have to establish their running game.
00:23:48Now, though, that they trail 17 to 6,
00:23:50there's always a tendency to get away from it,
00:23:52and for New England, always an almost team.
00:23:55And this may be the year that they're always an always team.
00:23:58Right, and they're certainly proving that right now.
00:24:00And the Colts need right now not to panic.
00:24:03One touchdown puts them right back in the game.
00:24:06For New England, going for five straight victories.
00:24:09Last time they had that was 1980.
00:24:12And here is Wansley.
00:24:17He'll pick up about three. It'll be third down and seven.
00:24:20Julius Adams was there for the Patriots.
00:24:23The biggest problem the Colts are having right now
00:24:26is they're not able to handle Tippett and Blackman.
00:24:31They are two defensive ends playing linebacker,
00:24:34and the Colts have not been able to keep those two linebackers
00:24:38out of the quarterback's face all afternoon.
00:24:41And here we are in a shotgun nickel again,
00:24:43and I look for him to get the ball to Bentley, number 20,
00:24:46because he doesn't have enough time to get the ball upfield.
00:24:49They mark it as a 38 to his third down and nine.
00:24:52Koper has completed two of three for 16 yards,
00:24:56tips away from the pressure,
00:24:58and cannot get away from the last man.
00:25:01And that was Andre Tippett, fourth sack for the Patriots,
00:25:05and for Tippett, his second sack of the ballgame.
00:25:09Tippett is coming down to the bottom of his screen.
00:25:11He's going under a stunt with Simms,
00:25:13helping to the outside.
00:25:14He spins, but he is a pursuing, relentless football player,
00:25:18always goes to the ball.
00:25:20And when you do that, good things happen,
00:25:22and he's sitting right there on the sack.
00:25:24The Colts really have to get on a sideline,
00:25:27bring this offense together,
00:25:28and somehow, someway have got to block those ice-hard linebackers,
00:25:32and they better put Lyman on them,
00:25:33because the backs can't handle him.
00:25:35Ron Stark kicking to Irving Fryer.
00:25:37Fryer is at 23.
00:25:39To the 30.
00:25:4035!
00:25:41Touchback!
00:25:43He's got it!
00:25:44He's got it!
00:26:1477 yards!
00:26:44Tony Franklin adds the point after.
00:26:5124 to 6.
00:26:56Cedric Jones is leading the cheer.
00:27:08The man they were cheering that you saw,
00:27:10number 80, Irving Fryer,
00:27:1177-yard putt return.
00:27:14Albert Finley is the deep back for the Colts.
00:27:19And here comes the Patriots.
00:27:24From a yard deep in the end zone.
00:27:29Fins is way to the 25-yard line.
00:27:34Jim Bowman makes the tackle.
00:27:3626 yards on the return.
00:27:38Let's go back to that touchdown.
00:27:41Irving Fryer feels it, and you know speed kills.
00:27:44Now watch him find a lane.
00:27:46He's as quick as a hiccup.
00:27:48And folks, it's all over right now,
00:27:50because that runner is not going to make the tackle,
00:27:52and neither is number 50,
00:27:54and it's time to tee up the extra point,
00:27:56because it's a 77-yard touchdown,
00:27:59and speed kills.
00:28:02That may have wiped out the Colts in this ballgame.
00:28:0524 to 6 now, the margin.
00:28:07And remember, at halftime, Patriots led by 1, 7 to 6.
00:28:12They have 17 points in the first nine and a half minutes
00:28:16of the second half.
00:28:18Gophers' pass is complete at the 34-yard line.
00:28:21It'll be close to the first down.
00:28:23Martin Boyer, the rookie, tied in from USC,
00:28:26pulled it down.
00:28:27Johnny Rimbert was there.
00:28:33We're going to ask for a measurement, I believe.
00:28:35It's close enough.
00:28:36They may have it.
00:28:39The Colts need to get a spark going,
00:28:41an offensive spark going,
00:28:43to get them back into this ballgame.
00:28:45Well, they have plenty of time.
00:28:46We have five minutes left in the third quarter
00:28:48and the full fourth quarter.
00:28:50They're going to get a drive going here right now
00:28:52and get on the board.
00:28:53That defense is playing well enough to keep in the game.
00:28:56It's the offense that has turned over
00:28:58and caused all the points in the fall of the Patriots.
00:29:01Believe it or not, the Patriots have not gotten on
00:29:05one concerted drive on offense for any score.
00:29:09First down, 35-yard line.
00:29:24Oliver Williams comes wide to the near side.
00:29:27Three wide receivers in the offensive set.
00:29:31And here is a timing pattern to Williams.
00:29:33Diving catch, he's got it.
00:29:35Goes sliding out of bounds.
00:29:37No, the official's going to say he was not down
00:29:40and they're going to add some yardage to the play.
00:29:43And they may bring it back.
00:29:44They're going to mark it around the 37.
00:29:46Big first down at any rate.
00:29:48Rod McSwain for the defense.
00:29:49Oliver Williams was the receiver.
00:29:54Koeffler's just going to put the ball up.
00:29:56Oliver Williams has good position.
00:29:58Now watch his concentration.
00:29:59Hits the ground, turns his shoulder.
00:30:01No one touches him.
00:30:02That's Rod McSwain, 23.
00:30:04Should have made the play.
00:30:05And he picks up a couple of extra yards.
00:30:07That's a big play right now that they need.
00:30:09Get in the end zone and they're back in this game.
00:30:12At the New England 36-yard line, first down.
00:30:18Sweep to the left side is McMillan.
00:30:21And he is driven out of bounds by Fred Merian.
00:30:24Merian with an interception leading to a touchdown.
00:30:26A fumble recovery leading to a score.
00:30:33A gain of 3 to the 33, second down and 7.
00:30:38We pause briefly for station identification.
00:30:41This is the NBC television network.
00:30:43Channel 2, WMAR-TV, Baltimore.
00:30:50This is Charlie Jones, Sam Ratigliano.
00:30:53Third quarter, 4-23 left to go in the third.
00:30:56New England out in front, 20-46.
00:30:58Coach just trying to get an offense moving in.
00:31:04Pass is complete to Capers.
00:31:06And Capers has the first down at the 22-yard line.
00:31:09A gain of 11.
00:31:10Ronnie Lifford and Roland James make the tackle.
00:31:13So in this drive, that is the third first down
00:31:16that started back at the 25-yard line.
00:31:18Let's go to the scoreboard and see what is happening.
00:31:21Cincinnati by 7 over Cleveland in the third quarter.
00:31:24Pittsburgh way out in front of Kansas City by 16.
00:31:29Rams by 6 of the Giants.
00:31:31Giants coming back at him now.
00:31:34Chicago leading Detroit 14-3.
00:31:41First and 10 at the 22.
00:31:43Here's a sweep left again with Wandsley carrying.
00:31:46And a flag is down as he goes out at the 16-yard line.
00:31:50Six yards if it stands up, but after the flag,
00:31:53then the fight ensues.
00:31:58More of pushing and shoving match than a fight.
00:32:01There is no swinging going on.
00:32:03Everybody's holding each other back.
00:32:05Let me at him. Let me at him.
00:32:07But don't let me go.
00:32:09Right.
00:32:21Gordon McCarter, the referee.
00:32:30Preliminary signal, illegal block on the coast.
00:32:51The call on Wayne Capers.
00:32:54And that causes the pushing and shoving because
00:32:56with illegal crackbacks, when you come in low,
00:32:59then you're talking about hitting around the knees.
00:33:01Defenders do not like that and they will react immediately.
00:33:03That's why they put the rule in,
00:33:05so that they can protect the outside linebackers
00:33:08from getting flipped below the waist
00:33:10and getting that knee injury.
00:33:14So the ball goes back to the 34-yard line.
00:33:18The penalty assessed from the spot of the foul.
00:33:20It is first down and 22.
00:33:22Kopler, by the way, has quietly completed
00:33:25five or six passes.
00:33:33We'll reset the clock. It reads 3.27.
00:33:35We'll reset it to 3.33.
00:33:48There it is.
00:33:57First and 22.
00:34:02Two tight ends, Pat Beach and Mark Boyer for the coast.
00:34:07McMillan is the single back.
00:34:10Kopler throws over the middle.
00:34:12The pass is caught, hit, and then lost.
00:34:15And New England comes up with it.
00:34:19Pat Beach caught it.
00:34:23John Blackman was there for New England.
00:34:29Fourth turnover.
00:34:34We've got a timeout.
00:34:37We've got a timeout.
00:34:39We'll be back in a moment.
00:34:46New England, 24.
00:34:48Indianapolis called six.
00:34:50With 3.24 left to go in the third.
00:34:53Patriots with the ball are thrown 19-yard line.
00:34:56Right now!
00:35:03Rogan gives to Frank James.
00:35:06James to the 20, maybe the 21.
00:35:08Let's give him a yard.
00:35:09Called it second down and nine.
00:35:11Dwayne Bickett makes the tackle at the 20-yard line.
00:35:19And the Colts continue to self-destruct.
00:35:21Their defense playing well in the ballgame.
00:35:23The offense coughs up the football.
00:35:25They had two big completions that were first downs.
00:35:29And they resulted in turnovers.
00:35:31And the ball went over to the pack.
00:35:35Second down.
00:35:38Switching to backfield.
00:35:39Four seconds on the 32nd clock.
00:35:45It's there!
00:35:46Danly Morgan!
00:35:47Wide open at the 46-yard line.
00:35:50Again at 25.
00:35:51Anthony Young finally caught up to him.
00:35:56We're in what they call a double zone.
00:35:59He's dropping back and waiting for Morgan to clear.
00:36:02The corner should have held his progress on the line of scrimmage.
00:36:06And he looks like he's wide open, which he is.
00:36:08But it's too much pressure on 37, Anthony Young.
00:36:11The corner has to help him.
00:36:13And the corner didn't do anything on that particular play.
00:36:16And they've done that two or three times today.
00:36:19For Stanley Morgan, the 25th time in his career.
00:36:22Stanley Morgan, the 25th time in his career he's had a 100-yard game.
00:36:26Here's Tony Collins.
00:36:27To the 50-yard line from the 46.
00:36:29Gain of four.
00:36:30Second down and six.
00:36:31Cliff Odom and Nesby Glasgow make the tackle.
00:36:35225 and counting.
00:36:36That is the time remaining in the third quarter.
00:36:39And what a third quarter it's been for the Patriots.
00:36:41They lead at halftime 7-6.
00:36:44And then a 41-yard field goal by Tony Franklin.
00:36:47A Grogan to Fryer 5-yard pass.
00:36:49Fryer then with a 77-yard punt return.
00:36:54And it is all New England.
00:36:59James.
00:37:01Dirty.
00:37:02Fumble.
00:37:04Scramble for the ball at the 18- to the 19-yard line.
00:37:13Patriots say that they have it.
00:37:16And they do.
00:37:1726-yard run with a fumble at the end.
00:37:21Those type of fumbles happen with really good backs as they try to dodge a lot of people.
00:37:27There's 33, Jake James.
00:37:28Breaks to the inside.
00:37:29Look at the move he puts on Anthony Young.
00:37:31Now he breaks to the outside.
00:37:33Breaks tackles all the way.
00:37:34Anthony Young got to give him credit.
00:37:36He came back and knocked the ball away.
00:37:38And everybody's scrambling right now.
00:37:40And the ball is bouncing this half for the Pats.
00:37:43Ryan Holloway was the man who recovered the fumble for New England.
00:37:47The offensive left tackle.
00:37:49And so the Patriots retain possession of the 19-yard line of the coast.
00:37:53First down.
00:37:54Minute and a half to go in the third.
00:38:02Here's James.
00:38:07To the 12-yard line has seven.
00:38:09Second down and three.
00:38:10Brad White and Cliff Odom make the stop.
00:38:14They're going at him now with the power game.
00:38:16But the real answer is the Colts defense has been on the field too much.
00:38:22And they're wearing down.
00:38:23And this is the first concerted drive that the Pats have put together.
00:38:28And now you're going to see the Colts, if they don't do something offensively,
00:38:32this game is going to break open even in a wider margin than it is right now.
00:38:39Craig James, 11 carries, 73 yards rushing for New England.
00:38:47And here is James again.
00:38:51Played his collegiate ball at SMU.
00:38:54Has the first down.
00:38:56Six-yard line.
00:38:58Colts have an injured player back at the 17.
00:39:00Brad White and Chris Scott make the tackle on the play.
00:39:06We've got an injury timeout with 33 seconds.
00:39:10That is the time remaining in the third quarter.
00:39:14The ball at the six-yard line.
00:39:15It'll be first down and goal to go.
00:39:19Anything that happens good to the left has to do with John Hanna.
00:39:23Number 73 is pulling now.
00:39:25He's zeroing in.
00:39:26He's not focused.
00:39:27Downfield.
00:39:28Holloway is in front.
00:39:29Knocks Glasgow down.
00:39:31John doesn't do much, but he stays on his feet.
00:39:34And James turns up inside with a good blocking by Holloway and Hanna.
00:39:39And we get another first down on the six-yard line.
00:39:43Dwayne Vick at number 50, the injured player.
00:39:45He's up and moving, as you can see.
00:39:47Orlando Lowry has replaced him in the lineup.
00:39:50Craig James has come out.
00:39:52And Mosey Tatupu and Tony Collins are the two running backs now for the Patriots.
00:39:5733 seconds left to go in the third.
00:39:59New England leading at 24 to 6.
00:40:03And threatening to stretch that margin by 6 or possibly 7.
00:40:08Now James will come back into that offensive set.
00:40:10And Tatupu comes out.
00:40:13With a breather due to the injury to Vickett.
00:40:16And James is ready to go.
00:40:17And he's been carrying the ball so well, I suspect the Patriots want him to score the touchdown.
00:40:26And here he is cutting back.
00:40:28He gets just about to the two-yard line inside the three.
00:40:31Orlando Lowry making the tackle.
00:40:35And the ovation from the crowd as we come to the end of the third quarter
00:40:40with the score, New England 24, Indianapolis 6.
00:40:43We'll be right back after these messages from your local station.
00:40:48In the second half, Craig James has rushed for 71 yards.
00:40:52In the second half, the Colts have rushed for 9.
00:40:54Boy, he's had a great second half.
00:40:57Second down, goal to go.
00:41:00The ball outside, just outside the two-yard line.
00:41:03About two and a half yards.
00:41:06As we start the fourth quarter.
00:41:08And the Pats have owned the fourth quarter since the return of Steve Grogan.
00:41:13In their history, the Patriots are 76.
00:41:16Victory, 7 losses, 2 ties.
00:41:18In home games that they've led,
00:41:20Victory, 7 losses, 2 ties.
00:41:22In home games that they've led after the third.
00:41:25So all of history is in favor of New England at this point.
00:41:28As Tony Challins shoots for the corner.
00:41:31And he's got it.
00:41:40Challins' fourth touchdown of the year.
00:41:42Fifth touchdown of the year.
00:41:49Pitches to the left side.
00:41:5173 is gonna pull.
00:41:53Lynn Dawson gets a good block.
00:41:55Now watch 73 make the block on Glasgow.
00:41:57And Collins puts his head down.
00:41:59And goes right into the corner of the end zone.
00:42:01For another touchdown.
00:42:02And that's the first long drive the Pats have put together for a touchdown today.
00:42:0781 yards in 8 plays.
00:42:09And here is the extra point attempt.
00:42:13It is good to score New England 31.
00:42:17And Indianapolis 6 will be back with a kickoff in just a moment.
00:42:22Tony Franklin kicking off with Albert Bitley.
00:42:25The deep back on the return.
00:42:27Picks it up at the 20-yard line.
00:42:29He's to the 30.
00:42:30Bitley's to the 40.
00:42:32And then finally caught at the 45-yard line.
00:42:35Tony Franklin, a 27-yard return.
00:42:37And Craig Hawthorne got him.
00:42:39And Franklin is down on the play.
00:42:42And he got caught right in the middle and got rolled over.
00:42:45And he's hurt, Charlie.
00:42:47It looks like he's holding his left elbow.
00:42:58With the kind of career he's had since joining the Pats,
00:43:01that could be a very, very big blow to the Patriots
00:43:05because of that important field goal potential.
00:43:09Franklin with a 41-yarder in this ballgame.
00:43:11This year, he has hit now 13 of 16.
00:43:16His long being 50 yards, and he is perfect on extra points.
00:43:21And this is his 105th consecutive game.
00:43:25Looks like it's the left arm.
00:43:27And they obviously don't want to move it right now.
00:43:30But Franklin is going to get up.
00:43:34And looks like he's going to be okay.
00:43:38We've got an injury timeout to score.
00:43:40The Patriots 31 and the Colts 6.
00:43:45Tony Franklin on the far side.
00:43:47They've been kind of working on that left shoulder, the upper left arm.
00:43:51Here's what happened. He just gets rolled under.
00:43:53You can see right there in the upper part of his left arm,
00:43:56he gets rolled over.
00:43:58And kickers, they don't get paid to get into that kind of traffic.
00:44:02That was a head-on collision.
00:44:05The backup kicker.
00:44:07Here he is. He's hiding out. Steve Drogan, number 14.
00:44:10He's trying on his kicking shoe.
00:44:12That's right. He doesn't want anybody to know it, though.
00:44:15At the 46-yard line, Colts in their own territory.
00:44:19And the pass is incomplete.
00:44:21It was a misread. Oliver Williams went to the inside.
00:44:24And Matt Cope, the quarterback, thought he was going to cut to the outside.
00:44:27Claiborne had the coverage. It'll be 2nd down and 10 at the Colt 46-yard line.
00:44:33Just over 14 and a half minutes to go in the ballgame.
00:44:36A close first half.
00:44:39The Colts got out in front 6-0.
00:44:41On a reverse, ending up with Pagel throwing to the tight end, Pat Beach, for the touchdown.
00:44:46Extra point was wide left, 6-0.
00:44:48And then 7-6.
00:44:50Drogan to Morgan.
00:44:52With 9.13 to go in the second.
00:44:54His pass is complete for the first down to Pat Beach.
00:44:57And Beach is at the 41-yard line.
00:45:00And Beach is at the 41-yard line in New England territory.
00:45:04So he picks up 13 yards in the first down.
00:45:067-6 at the halftime.
00:45:08But since then, it has been all New England.
00:45:14Let's check the scoreboard.
00:45:15Cincinnati by 10 over Cleveland in the 4th.
00:45:19Pittsburgh out in front of Kansas City by 9, 30-21.
00:45:24Ooh, look at this.
00:45:26Giants on top of the Rams by 1, 17, 16 in the 4th quarter.
00:45:31We've got some more for you right after this play.
00:45:35Watch the break!
00:45:36Kofler!
00:45:40Fifth sack for the Patriots.
00:45:42This one is Don Blackman.
00:45:45And it is his sixth sack of the season.
00:45:47He came from the open side.
00:45:49And no one was there to block him.
00:45:51There had to be some type of mix-up.
00:45:53Kofler's concentrating outside.
00:45:55It's the left guard who is supposed to come out to block him.
00:45:59And Blackman comes in unprotected and makes the play.
00:46:03And the left guard right there is Ben Utt, number 64.
00:46:06He should have come outside to pick up that linebacker.
00:46:09They were both blocking the end.
00:46:11Both Hinton and Utt.
00:46:12And that's how you lose quarterbacks in this league.
00:46:15Second and 19 at the 50-yard line.
00:46:19Sack number six.
00:46:25Garen Beres has his second sack of the ballgame.
00:46:36Loss of nine.
00:46:38Third and 28.
00:46:40Patriot defense right now.
00:46:42They don't care about the run.
00:46:45They're really turning those defensive linemen.
00:46:48And linebackers loose.
00:46:50And they're putting tremendous pressure on the Colt offensive line.
00:46:54And, of course, the down and distance is not helping the quarterback at all.
00:46:58Curtis Dickey and Albert Bentley are the two backs in the shotgun
00:47:02with the quarterback, Matt Kofler.
00:47:07Moore coming in the rush for New England.
00:47:09Going deep.
00:47:11Moore coming in the rush for New England.
00:47:13Going deep.
00:47:14Interception!
00:47:15Underthrown, knocked away at the last moment by Oliver Williams,
00:47:18the intended receiver.
00:47:20He had a step on Claiborne.
00:47:22Claiborne might have been able to close on him
00:47:24because the ball would have to be in the air so long.
00:47:26But Williams made a pretty good defensive play as an offensive player.
00:47:30Kofler just throws this ball up for grabs.
00:47:32It looks like a punt return.
00:47:34Drake Claiborne is step for step with Oliver Williams.
00:47:37He goes up to try to make the play.
00:47:39And Oliver Williams does a good job preventing the interception.
00:47:44Fourth down and 28, Ron Stark will be putting.
00:47:48And Irving Fryer is set for the return.
00:47:51And Fryer in this ballgame is a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown.
00:47:56Low snap, good catch.
00:47:58This one sails with the wind into the end zone.
00:48:0259 yards on the punt, but we'll bring it out to the 20-yard line.
00:48:0612.5 minutes plus 6 seconds, 12.36.
00:48:10That is the time remaining in the fourth quarter
00:48:12as the Colts will go to work at their own 20-yard line first down.
00:48:17Excuse me, the Patriots will go to work.
00:48:19Out in front by 25 points, 31-6.
00:48:23Patriots in control of the ballgame, going for their fifth straight win.
00:48:28And the last time they had five straight, you have to go back to the year 1980.
00:48:34And right now, New England's record would be 7-3, the Colts' record 3-7.
00:48:39And later on this afternoon, the Jets are at Miami.
00:48:43If the Jets win, they will be on top 8-2.
00:48:45If Miami wins, the Jets in New England will be tied for the lead
00:48:49with identical 7-3 records.
00:48:51Here is Craig James carrying from the 20, has a couple of yards to the 22.
00:48:55Dwayne Vickett, second down and 8.
00:48:57Let's go to those standings that I was talking about, Sam.
00:49:01The New York Jets right now are playing Miami, as you said.
00:49:04So it's a key game.
00:49:05Not yet, not yet.
00:49:06They start in 25 minutes.
00:49:07Sometime this afternoon.
00:49:08Don't give them too big a rush.
00:49:10The Pats could find themselves in first place.
00:49:12Tied for first.
00:49:13Tied for first place.
00:49:14That's right.
00:49:15But it's a tough place to play for the Jets.
00:49:18They don't have a very good record down there.
00:49:20And I'm sure Raymond Berry is feeling pretty good at this stage of the game.
00:49:24Second and nine.
00:49:31Drogon deep over the middle to the tight end.
00:49:34And he has it.
00:49:3726 yards on the play to the 47-yard line.
00:49:41First down, Cliff Odom with the tackle.
00:49:44That's the first catch for the tight end today with the Pats, I believe.
00:49:50And again, he had linebacker coverage.
00:49:52Cliff Odom, it was a one-on-one.
00:49:54And the Patriots are not sitting on the ball.
00:49:56They're going right into the game plan.
00:49:59And they're not worried about the score or running the football.
00:50:02They're going for the big plays also.
00:50:04Are you surprised?
00:50:05No, I'm not surprised.
00:50:06Because I think Steve Drogon is going to need that in November and December.
00:50:10Because he hasn't played prior to his start for 18 games.
00:50:14He's going to have to get back into the groove.
00:50:16This is his fourth start after coming on in relief of Tony Eason,
00:50:19who had that shoulder separation.
00:50:22So he does.
00:50:23And he really hasn't had that much work.
00:50:24So he needs the work.
00:50:25The other thing, he doesn't get that much work during the week.
00:50:28That's right.
00:50:29Because of the elbow, he's not throwing the football much.
00:50:32And I can't blame Raymond Berry right now for trying to get Drogon in the groove.
00:50:37Because the way it looks right now, it's going to be a very interesting November and December for the Patriots.
00:50:43Drogon, 12 of 2176 yards and two touchdowns.
00:50:47Number 11 is Tony Eason.
00:50:51Second down and six.
00:50:52Quick screen, far side.
00:50:56And Morgan has a first down.
00:50:59Eugene Daniel finally chasing Stanley Morgan out of bounds.
00:51:07They'll mark it at the 35-yard line.
00:51:09A gain of 14.
00:51:13Right now it doesn't make any difference what Drogon calls.
00:51:16He can pull anything out of his hat.
00:51:18It's going to work.
00:51:19It's a nice, nice feeling to be a quarterback in this situation right now.
00:51:23Everything is working.
00:51:25And part of that is due to the fact that the Colts defense is just beginning to wilt.
00:51:34Here's Tony Collins on a sweep to the right side.
00:51:37And he is bumped out of bounds.
00:51:40At the 32-yard line, Cliff Odom.
00:51:43Gain of three.
00:51:44Second down and seven.
00:51:45Well, what is the New England Patriots, what do they have in front of them?
00:51:48Here's what they have in front of them.
00:51:51At Seattle.
00:51:52So they're talking about that one already.
00:51:55At the Jets, that will be a big one.
00:51:57At Indianapolis.
00:51:58Three on the road.
00:51:59In Detroit at home and then at Miami on Monday.
00:52:02Boy, that's a tough schedule.
00:52:06That's not all that easy.
00:52:08They could have had a week off if they played the Colts today in a doubleheader.
00:52:12A home and away.
00:52:15Second down.
00:52:22Here's Craig James.
00:52:2430-yard line.
00:52:27This will be third down and five as Brad White teams up with Donnell Thompson on the tackle.
00:52:31The clock moves now on the 10-minute mark.
00:52:34Time remaining in the ballgame to score.
00:52:36New England 31 and Indianapolis 6.
00:52:39And James now 89 yards and 15 carries.
00:52:43Barry Cross is a real leader in his defense.
00:52:46Look at him take on 73 and that's a load.
00:52:49And he didn't make the tackle, but he caused the tackle because he had tremendous discipline and strength in the hole.
00:52:56Third down and five.
00:53:03Pressure from the outside.
00:53:05Grogan steps away from it.
00:53:06He is chased.
00:53:07Pass is knocked down.
00:53:08Good defense to play.
00:53:10Tony Collins, the intended receiver, and Johnny Cook, the linebacker, picked him up, reached out in front and knocked it down.
00:53:17And it was Chris Scott who was chasing Steve Grogan.
00:53:22So it's fourth down and five at the 30.
00:53:28They're not going to try to kick the field goal because Franklin is hurt.
00:53:31So the best thing they can do right now is go for it.
00:53:37And Grogan is the back-up kicker.
00:53:39He doesn't want to be part of that, actually.
00:53:41He doesn't want to kick the field goal.
00:53:42Right now, Grogan feels like he can pick up five yards under the center as opposed to lining up to kick a field goal.
00:53:48And if he doesn't, they turn it over at the 30-yard line.
00:53:50Good field position.
00:53:52Fourth down and five.
00:53:54There's jumping in their flag.
00:53:57Grogan goes down at the 40-yard line, but if the Colts were not pulled off, they were offside.
00:54:07Colts offside.
00:54:18Now let's look to see where the ball was marked.
00:54:20Is it a true five yards or five yards plus?
00:54:24If it's five yards plus, then it won't be a first down.
00:54:27This is the story of the whole game for the Colts.
00:54:29It's going to be just short of a first down, but it will be fourth down and less than a yard.
00:54:36Where they would have had possession of the ball somewhere around the 35.
00:54:45So it's fourth down and inches.
00:54:48And the ball is at the 25-yard line.
00:54:54Mosey Tatupu and Robert Weathers are in the backfield for the Patriots.
00:55:01In this case, I think I'd look for Tatupu, number 30.
00:55:04Trying to pick up the first down.
00:55:06That is a good guess.
00:55:12And Tatupu leads the blocking and Robert Weathers is the ball carrier.
00:55:17First down.
00:55:19Dwayne Bickett stops the play for the Colts.
00:55:24A couple of yards to the 23.
00:55:26On a short yardage, the lead back is the key blocker.
00:55:2930, Tatupu goes right in there, knocks Tatupu, knocks Barry Kraus back,
00:55:34and Robert Weathers picks up the first down.
00:55:44First and 10 at the 23.
00:55:4623.
00:55:54And here's James.
00:55:56Leads to the 18-yard line, gain of five.
00:55:59Second down and five.
00:56:01George Achika making the tackle for the Colts.
00:56:04Now, we told you we'd have some more scores.
00:56:06Well, here they are.
00:56:07Cincinnati by 10 over Cleveland in the fourth quarter.
00:56:10Pittsburgh out in front of Kansas City by 12 in the fourth.
00:56:14Giants 24 to 16 over the Rams in the fourth.
00:56:19Chicago by 21 out in front of Detroit.
00:56:23Seattle coming from behind.
00:56:26They trail 3-0 early.
00:56:28Tampa Bay shutting out St. Louis.
00:56:30Way to go, Bucs.
00:56:31Green Bay 20, Minnesota 17.
00:56:35Tampa Bay's the only team without a win in the league.
00:56:39Craig James.
00:56:41Written down at the 14-yard line by Anthony Young.
00:56:45And we have a couple more scores left for you.
00:56:50Buffalo 20 and Houston.
00:56:52I'm really surprised at that.
00:56:53I thought Houston was making a comeback.
00:56:57Philadelphia 17, Atlanta 14.
00:57:00Houston just couldn't cope with success.
00:57:04Right now, Craig James has rushed for 98 yards only once prior this season.
00:57:11And the Patriots had a 100-yard game rushing, and that was last week.
00:57:14Craig James, 23 carries, 119 yards rushing in the victory over Miami.
00:57:19He just needs a couple to hit that century mark again.
00:57:25Third down and one is Robert Weathers.
00:57:29He goes to the 13-yard line.
00:57:32Eugene Daniel is the man who stopped him.
00:57:38The clock continues to move.
00:57:40It is shy of the first down.
00:57:42Without the kicker or the injury.
00:57:47Here he is.
00:57:48Tony Franklin's coming out.
00:57:49Injury and all to kick.
00:57:51He got a little closer, so he wanted to go in there and get that three points.
00:57:57You got to kick in pain, is that right?
00:57:59That's exactly right.
00:58:03This will be an attempt of 30 yards.
00:58:08Franklin has hit from 41.
00:58:12He is 13 of 16 on the year.
00:58:17And he's got it.
00:58:19From 30 yards away.
00:58:21And the New England Patriots add three more to their total.
00:58:24It's 34 to 6.
00:58:26We'll be back for the kickoff.
00:58:28Sam, New England has this victory wrapped up.
00:58:30How do you assess them in the East against the Jets and the Dolphins?
00:58:34Well, their record in the AFC East is excellent.
00:58:38They have already beaten the Jets and they beat Miami.
00:58:41So they're right now in the driver's seat.
00:58:43But November is very important if you want to stay home for Christmas in December.
00:58:49And you better not look ahead.
00:58:52They have Seattle next week in the Kingdom, which is always a tough one.
00:58:57Which is always a tough place to play Seattle.
00:58:59Boy, they are tough at home.
00:59:00The Raiders say that's their burial ground.
00:59:02They can't win there.
00:59:04Franklin kicking off and it goes out of bounds.
00:59:07It'll be a five-yard penalty.
00:59:08They'll do it again.
00:59:1034 to 6.
00:59:11The Patriots lead at the 34 points.
00:59:13The most that the Patriots have scored in a game since last November.
00:59:17And that was in a game against the Colts.
00:59:20Let's go to NFL 85. Bob?
00:59:23Charlie, it looks like the Saints will lose their fifth in a row.
00:59:26And the Seahawks are rolling Dave Craig to Daryl Turner.
00:59:2915-yard scoring play for Craig.
00:59:31His 20th TD pass of the year.
00:59:32He leads the NFL in that category.
00:59:34And Seattle leads New Orleans in the fourth.
00:59:3624-3.
00:59:39Thank you, Bob.
00:59:40Seattle, a strange ball club this year.
00:59:43They have to do it with turnovers like they did last year.
00:59:46And they started in the game last week.
00:59:48That certainly was the difference in the ball game.
00:59:51But their defense and their special teams have to do it for the Seattle Seahawks.
00:59:54If they are to make the playoffs.
00:59:56And they felt in August, in the spring, in the early games,
00:59:59that they were a contending team.
01:00:01They hit a low spot with David Craig.
01:00:04And I think he's back in gear right now.
01:00:06After the win last week against the Raiders,
01:00:09and certainly in their game against the Saints today.
01:00:11The quarterback in the final drive,
01:00:13with all those other things that you talk about in place,
01:00:15the quarterback can't hurt you.
01:00:17And Craig now has just got to make sure he doesn't throw those key interceptions.
01:00:21Which is what he was doing when they were losing.
01:00:27Tony Franklin will be kicking off from the 30-yard line.
01:00:30Albert Bentley is the deep back on the return.
01:00:35Picks it up at the 14-yard line.
01:00:37Bentley to the 30.
01:00:41And returns it to the 34-yard line.
01:00:45Next Sunday, join NBC Sports for an exciting football doubleheader.
01:00:49The early game will feature either the Pittsburgh Steelers,
01:00:51as they take on the Houston Oilers,
01:00:53or the Miami Dolphins against the Indianapolis Colts,
01:00:55with other regional action.
01:00:57Then the second half of the doubleheader will showcase
01:00:59either the Cincinnati Bengals against the L.A. Raiders,
01:01:01or the New England Patriots as they battle the Seattle Seahawks.
01:01:04It all gets underway at 12.30 Eastern time,
01:01:07with NFL 85 and your host Bob Costa.
01:01:09So check your local listings for the games and times in your area.
01:01:12Your team plays here, so kick off with NBC Sports.
01:01:18Gill is in the ballgame as a running back for Indianapolis.
01:01:22And Owen struggles back to the line of scrimmage.
01:01:24It'll be second down and 10.
01:01:29Garen Veras making the tackle, the rookie from Stanford.
01:01:33Owen Gill is a rookie from Iowa,
01:01:36and was a high draft choice of the Seattle Seahawks.
01:01:40He was cut from that ballclub, picked up on waivers.
01:01:42Second round draft choice by the Seattle Seahawks.
01:01:49Second down and 10.
01:01:52And there is the time remaining in the ballgame,
01:01:54New England 34 and Indianapolis second.
01:02:03Kofor far side, it is incomplete.
01:02:06Too high for Wayne Kaeper, so it'll be third down and 10.
01:02:09Now let's look forward for the Indianapolis Colts
01:02:12to see who they face in the future.
01:02:17Miami at Kansas City, New England at home,
01:02:20at Chicago, at Tampa Bay, and then Houston at home.
01:02:23So the Colts have a nasty schedule remaining.
01:02:29And they have to solve the big problem they have right now
01:02:32on that football team, which Rod Dower has to think about,
01:02:36is the instability at quarterback.
01:02:38Two weeks in a row, they've played two quarterbacks in the game.
01:02:44Third down.
01:02:47Kofor, the middle pass is complete to the 50 yard line.
01:02:50It'll be a first down, a gain of 16 yards.
01:02:53Fred Marion making the tackle.
01:02:56And it was Mark Boyer, the rookie tied in from USC,
01:02:59that caught it at the 50 yard line.
01:03:03Patriots are back in a zone defense.
01:03:07They want to make sure that they don't allow the Colts to get a big play,
01:03:11catch all the passes between both sidelines,
01:03:14and most importantly right now, keep the clock running,
01:03:17and let's get out of here with a win.
01:03:19Kofor has completed 8 of 12 for 106 yards in the ballgame.
01:03:25And here's the draw.
01:03:27Owen Gill has 3 yards to the 47 yard line.
01:03:32It'll be second down and 7.
01:03:34Don Blackman with the tackle.
01:03:36That's now a final.
01:03:37Chicago 24 and Detroit 3.
01:03:41So Chicago just keeps rolling along.
01:03:44Four and a half minutes left to roll along here at Sullivan Stadium.
01:03:48Patriots out in front of the Colts, 34 to 6.
01:03:51Did the refrigerator kick 8 field goals in that game?
01:03:54We didn't have a report.
01:03:55Was there any scoring report on the refrigerator?
01:03:57No, the refrigerator did not score today.
01:04:01Well, that's right, the house didn't score here.
01:04:05Here's pressure from the outside and the sack.
01:04:09Seventh sack in the ballgame for the Patriots,
01:04:12and Don Blackman got his second.
01:04:16No, shimmy is Andre Tippett.
01:04:18For Tippett, that is his third sack.
01:04:21And runs his total to 10 on the year.
01:04:25Tippett is at the top of your screen and 84.
01:04:27Mark Boyer has to block him,
01:04:29and there's no way a tight end is going to block Andre Tippett,
01:04:33and he makes the play in the sack on Matt Copeland.
01:04:37Who are those guys?
01:04:39Where are they coming from?
01:04:40Everywhere.
01:04:41Third down and 15.
01:04:423.50 and counting, time remaining.
01:04:51Gill is open, going deep.
01:04:53Pass is complete at the 40-yard line.
01:04:55That'll be a first down to Pat B.
01:04:58Got 16 yards, one to spare for the first down.
01:05:02Here's another final, Seattle 27 and New Orleans 3.
01:05:06Norm Johnson into the scoring with a 26-yard field goal
01:05:09for the Seattle Seahawks.
01:05:12And I mention that because he's had some trouble kicking field goals.
01:05:15He's been hitting the uprights of the crossbar.
01:05:18Sometimes they bounce and they go in,
01:05:20and sometimes they bounce and they go out.
01:05:22It's an interesting light field goal kicker.
01:05:25That's why they do a lot of traveling.
01:05:27They do.
01:05:28From team to team to team.
01:05:30First down at the Patriots 40-yard line,
01:05:33and Gill gets the call back to the line of scrimmage.
01:05:36That's it.
01:05:37So it'll be second down and 10 as Lester Williams is there to greet him
01:05:40right at the 40-yard line.
01:05:45That's Rod Russ, the defensive coordinator.
01:05:47He was the coach that Ron Meyer wanted to fire,
01:05:50and the next week Ron Meyer got fired,
01:05:53and Rod Russ came back as a defensive coordinator.
01:05:55And, of course, Raymond Berry made the right decision.
01:05:58He's a very fine coach and has done an outstanding job with his defense.
01:06:04Second and 10, 40-yard line.
01:06:08Clock chasing after that two-minute mark.
01:06:14Pass is incomplete.
01:06:16Bat beats the tight end, the intended receiver,
01:06:19and that will stop the clock with 2-16.
01:06:21We have another final in.
01:06:22Tampa Bay, they've done it.
01:06:24Way to go, Buccaneers.
01:06:25They defeat St. Louis 69.
01:06:27St. Louis.
01:06:28Boy, they have fallen on to bad times.
01:06:31Inconsistent after they beat Dallas on Monday night.
01:06:35And after many say they're Rod Downer.
01:06:37That's exactly right.
01:06:39I thought they would be a tremendous factor in the NFC East
01:06:43after the strong finish that they had last year into the playoffs.
01:06:50Third and 10 at the 40-yard line.
01:06:55Koeffler throws.
01:06:56Comeback pattern.
01:06:57Pass is complete.
01:06:59Wayne capers, and it'll be a first down at the 27-yard line.
01:07:05Gain of 11 on the play, maybe 12.
01:07:10And the clock moves to the two-minute mark.
01:07:12So we've got the two-minute timeout.
01:07:14We'll be back in a moment.
01:07:18This is Charlie Jones, Sam Raticliano, and very somber on the Colt bench.
01:07:24I've been on that sideline looking at some of those somber faces
01:07:27and had the same feeling myself.
01:07:29I guess the only thing you think about right now is, boy,
01:07:31I hope they have a good meal on the way back on the plane
01:07:35because we certainly got our lunch eaten out here today.
01:07:38That's right.
01:07:39Back at the New England 27-yard line.
01:07:41Colt has the ball first down, trailing 34 to 6.
01:07:47Defense played well for Indianapolis,
01:07:49but as you pointed out a couple of times, I think very truly,
01:07:52in that they were on the field too long.
01:07:53The offense just gave the ball up in turnovers.
01:07:55The defense had to be there too.
01:07:57They had to spend too much time on the field.
01:07:59While they were in a ballgame, I thought they matched up pretty well,
01:08:02but they just remained on the field too long.
01:08:05It's going to be interesting to see what Rod does next week
01:08:08in terms of his quarterback situation.
01:08:10Here's another final.
01:08:11Green Bay over Minnesota by 10.
01:08:17First down.
01:08:29Go for it.
01:08:30To the 15, still going to the 10.
01:08:34Lester Williams was there at the 5-yard line
01:08:36where he went out to stop the clock with 149 to go.
01:08:39It'll be first down and goal to go.
01:08:4222 yards on the play.
01:08:46That's probably their longest run on the line of scrimmage all day long.
01:08:50What they did was, this was a design play.
01:08:52Watch him.
01:08:53He's going to the outside, and there's the block on Tippett,
01:08:55so they get outside to see.
01:08:57He's working only half the field right now.
01:09:00He doesn't see anybody open, so now he's going to run.
01:09:02He's going to juke to the right.
01:09:04Now, oops, I got past that guy.
01:09:06Now get to the outside.
01:09:07Gets a good block by Oliver Williams.
01:09:09And 72, Lester Williams had to make the play.
01:09:13Fred Marion was also there.
01:09:15Fred's been everywhere today at interception,
01:09:17fumble return, and on several key tackles.
01:09:22Here's Wansley to the 1-yard line.
01:09:26It'll be second down and goal to go.
01:09:28Claiborne saves it.
01:09:32Still a lot of time on the clock.
01:09:35This is what they needed to be doing all day,
01:09:37except the situation doesn't fit it.
01:09:3934, Wansley.
01:09:40Watch him.
01:09:41Turn up inside.
01:09:42Good center of gravity, strong,
01:09:44but it's a nice job right there by the Patriot defense
01:09:47with Raymond Claiborne right on top of the pile.
01:10:02Wansley showing motion.
01:10:04Here is Gill, and does not go in.
01:10:08Owen Gill gets the call.
01:10:10There is no signal.
01:10:11They gave it to him.
01:10:12There it is.
01:10:13They got it.
01:10:15So Owen Gill has the touchdown.
01:10:2334, Wansley is in front of the plate.
01:10:25Gill puts his head down, and the ball crosses the plane,
01:10:29as you see plainly right there,
01:10:31and the Colts are on the board.
01:10:3334-12 with the extra point to come,
01:10:36and we have 56 seconds left to go in the game here.
01:10:41Lake Gray will be attempting the extra point,
01:10:45and Ron Tark is the holder.
01:10:57Flags are down on the play.
01:10:59The extra point went through the upright,
01:11:02but there are flags on the play.
01:11:20So it's 34-13.
01:11:22We'll be back with the kickoff.
01:11:2556 seconds left to go here at Sullivan Stadium.
01:11:29The New England Patriots 34, the Indianapolis Colts 13.
01:11:35And there in the dapper gentleman hat,
01:11:37shaking hands with everybody, that's Billy Sullivan,
01:11:39the president of the Patriots.
01:11:41He likes to shake hands because he's walked out at times
01:11:45where there are other things happening besides shaking hands.
01:11:48He was dodging bullets and rolling his wagon.
01:11:51So it's a nice, sweet thing to be able to go down there
01:11:54and take advantage of the situation.
01:11:57It'll be five in a row for New England.
01:12:00Fryer takes it back in the end zone,
01:12:03and he'll down it in the end zone,
01:12:05and will bring the ball out to the 20-yard line.
01:12:07They're going to rule in safety.
01:12:09They're going to say that he caught it at the two-yard line
01:12:11and took it into the end zone.
01:12:13It wasn't the momentum of the kick that did it.
01:12:16Let's take a look at the replay.
01:12:18Watch where he catches the ball,
01:12:20and you have to decide now whether he or the ball took him in,
01:12:24and it's very clear that he took himself to the inside,
01:12:27and now the Colts have 14 points and the ball.
01:12:31That's better than an onside kick.
01:12:38The safety will make it 34 to 15,
01:12:42and the Patriots will be kicking now.
01:12:45They'll be punting from the 20-yard line.
01:12:48It's kind of a strange turn of events.
01:12:50I've never seen an onside kick now on the punt.
01:12:53They can do that.
01:12:54That's right in any free-kick situation.
01:12:56But leading in the ballgame like they are,
01:12:5834 to 15, there'll be no need for it.
01:13:00No, that's exactly right.
01:13:02I had my—I turned the field around.
01:13:05That's right. I just turned it back.
01:13:06That's why they have erasers on pencils.
01:13:10Rich Camarillo will be punting.
01:13:19And Robbie Martin is dropping back as the returner.
01:13:26And we have 55 seconds.
01:13:28That is the time remaining.
01:13:30There's Robbie Martin.
01:13:31He made a bad decision on a punt return in the end zone,
01:13:35was then replaced by Albert Bentley,
01:13:37and in addition is bothered by that bad right elbow
01:13:39that he's had the problems with and has had to have some surgery on.
01:13:43He's been in and out of the hospital for the last two weeks
01:13:46all during the practice situation.
01:13:52Here we go with a free-kick.
01:13:57Taken at the 29-yard line by Robbie Martin.
01:14:00Martin to the 40 and down at the 42-yard line.
01:14:03And mostly to Tupou, the—
