00:00:00Tonight, a special one-hour episode, Amazing Stories.
00:00:07Three cheers for the Cooks, the place to be is here.
00:00:11You're going to have to see the Patriots throw the ball more successfully.
00:00:14Well, I think the Dolphins have done what they would like to do, and that is stop the running game pretty well.
00:00:19Grogan now has got more pressure on him, the thing we talked about coming into the game,
00:00:23where he feels like the pressure was spread to the rest of the players on the team.
00:00:27But still, somebody has to make the play.
00:00:29He has a good offensive line and a lot of big players around him,
00:00:32but now somebody's got to be the catalyst to step in and make the play,
00:00:35and that's Steve Grogan, and I think Chuck Studley has done what he wants to do,
00:00:39and that is put more pressure on Grogan and take away that run and say,
00:00:42now go throw the football.
00:00:44Both of these clubs, as we mentioned way back in the beginning, 5-3,
00:00:48a very interesting race going on in the AFCs these days.
00:00:51Well, the Jets are 6-2, and I don't think the loser of this game is out of it
00:00:56by any stretch of the imagination, but don't tell that to any of these two coaches
00:00:59because they want to win this ballgame.
00:01:02All right, we're getting set to go to the second half,
00:01:06and the kickoff by Franklin coming down for the Dolphins,
00:01:10bringing it out across the 25 to the 30 to the 35 out to the 40-yard line,
00:01:16and then a fumble.
00:01:20The tupu got in there to pick up the ball, a 36-yard return.
00:01:23The ball is dead as it was returned by Lorenzo Hampton,
00:01:30so it will be the Miami club to take it at the 40-yard line
00:01:34as we look at these first-half statistics.
00:01:37Everything is pretty much the same except for that number right there,
00:01:40the three turnovers by the Patriots,
00:01:42and that is really the thing that has changed this game around,
00:01:45the two interceptions and the lost fumble, and the Dolphins are ahead by seven.
00:01:52Hampton had been averaging 23 yards per return, and that one was a 36-yarder.
00:01:57Jensen comes in motion.
00:01:58The handoff goes to Davenport, and Davenport is up to the 44-yard line,
00:02:03stalled there by Kenneth Sims, 77, and Garen Beres, number 60.
00:02:08Beres is a rookie out of Stanford.
00:02:13Beres is playing very well.
00:02:15He needs more weight, but he is a good, aggressive, young defensive lineman,
00:02:19and they feel like he may be as good as Ken Sims.
00:02:22He was taken in the second round, Sims in the first, but they like him.
00:02:29Second down, about seven.
00:02:32Over the middle, the ball is tipped.
00:02:34He was trying to go to the tight end, Dan Johnson, number 87.
00:02:39It might have been Beres who got a hand on it.
00:02:41It was a little tough to tell.
00:02:45Dan Marino, 10 of 17, 116 yards through the one interception.
00:02:52He's got Vigorito in there now, 32, at a wide receiver spot with Durio Harris, 82.
00:02:58Again, Matt Moore did dress because of the rib injury, not playing.
00:03:03Tony Nathan, 22, is in the backfield, and penalty markers go down,
00:03:10and Marino got it away quickly as there was a lot of pressure from the Patriots.
00:03:16Sims, 77, Beres, 60.
00:03:19Tippett was offsides on the play.
00:03:25Andre Tippett, I think we've got it for you.
00:03:28Left side, 56, just jumps a little early.
00:03:32Good concentration on the part of Ronnie Lee,
00:03:35not to move as he jumps across the line of scrimmage.
00:03:38Tippett had six-and-a-half quarterback sacks coming into today's game.
00:03:42New England with six penalties, 29 yards.
00:03:45Miami, the least penalized team in the NFL, no penalties yet today.
00:03:49Tippett had 18-and-a-half sacks last year to lead all linebackers in the league,
00:03:54so good at running and rushing the passer that they put him at a defensive end on third down.
00:03:59Third and one.
00:04:01And another penalty marker goes down.
00:04:04It looked like Beres, the rookie.
00:04:07Now, of course, he could have been pulled off,
00:04:10but he was in the Miami backfield before that ball was snapped.
00:04:15Encroachment, number 60, first down.
00:04:19First down, Beres firing across early.
00:04:23To the left of your screens, Beres goes in between the two linemen.
00:04:27That's the way the defensives charge on a short yardage situation into the gaps.
00:04:33He was taking his gap responsibility.
00:04:36He did it a little bit too soon.
00:04:39Miami leading 10-3.
00:04:42Dolphins football at the Patriot 46-yard line.
00:04:45Jensen, number 11, is in that lineup now again for the Dolphins.
00:04:53Marino with play action, throws it away.
00:04:58Bob, was he trying to set up some kind of a screen to the left side there
00:05:02or just too much pressure?
00:05:03I couldn't tell, but he really had to get rid of it.
00:05:05Larry McGrew was coming in for the Patriots, number 50, the linebacker on the inside,
00:05:09and Marino shaking his head.
00:05:11That was a trap pass, Jay.
00:05:12They wanted to try and get the ball to one of the back out of the backfield.
00:05:15They fake like it's a run, but there was good coverage on the play,
00:05:19and he didn't have time to look.
00:05:21Marino is having to throw for the most part to his primary receiver
00:05:25because he doesn't have time to look to his second and third receivers.
00:05:35Second down and 10, and again it looks like the Patriots are offside.
00:05:40Marino may have a free play, and the pass going to Nathan bounced away from him.
00:05:50Simms, number 77, had a broken leg in 1983.
00:05:56Yep, he moved offsides against Kenneth Simms.
00:06:00It's interesting that in a period of a couple of minutes in this game,
00:06:04there have been three offsides penalties.
00:06:06The Dolphin Cadence, Jay, I know it very well.
00:06:09Yes, you do.
00:06:10And how it goes as we look at the pressure on Marino, but it's a nonrhythmic cadence,
00:06:15and you don't have to say the first hut or the second hut right after the first,
00:06:18and it's confusing to the Patriots at this point.
00:06:21Second down and five, three penalties on three plays.
00:06:24Davenport fumbles, and it's recovered by the Patriots, and it was Kenneth Simms.
00:06:32Simms comes up with a football at the 35-yard line.
00:06:42The rookie, Ron Davenport, leaving the ball on the ground as it comes right at you.
00:06:48He makes a cut inside the block.
00:06:51The 55, Don Blackman, hits his head in there,
00:06:54and Kenneth Simms comes around to recover the football.
00:06:58Blackman and Tippett, two big play linebackers for the New England Patriots, do it again.
00:07:04Great coverage by our crew, directed today by Richard Klein and our producer Larry Cirillo,
00:07:10and this crowd fired up.
00:07:12That's his first fumble recovery as a professional.
00:07:15And now on first down, Grogan with a screen out to James at the 35 at the 40,
00:07:22just over the 40-yard line.
00:07:24A pickup of about six as Hugh Green, 55, made the play for Miami.
00:07:30Thirteen and a half minutes to go.
00:07:32We're in the third quarter.
00:07:34The Dolphins lead it 10-3.
00:07:37That's a good call by Grogan.
00:07:38He's been throwing a lot of play action on first down,
00:07:41and the linebackers have been getting deep.
00:07:43This time he showed pass, and they got deep, and he dunked the little screen pass out.
00:07:49Screens are good against zone coverages.
00:07:51They're not good against man-to-man where the linebacker will go right to the receiver.
00:07:55James and Collins in the eye behind Grogan.
00:07:58The pitch to Collins.
00:08:00Collins spinning across the 45.
00:08:04First down at that point, Doug Betters, number 75, the eight-year man from Nevada Reno,
00:08:10made the tackle.
00:08:15Betters, number six draft choice, 6'7", 265.
00:08:22As you mentioned earlier on, Robert, he's been playing well.
00:08:26He's a leader of that defense.
00:08:28With A.J. Dewey out of the lineup and Baumauer gone for a while,
00:08:34they really need some leadership, and Betters is the one that has really come on to give them that leadership.
00:08:39On first down, James.
00:08:42Another first down for the Patriots as James carries the football down to the 41-yard line of Miami.
00:08:50Mark Brown, 51 on the tackle, pickup of 12.
00:08:55Blocking by Collins here, the lead man.
00:08:58Exactly. One of the best things about James carrying is that Collins is blocking for him,
00:09:03and Hannah, 73, coming through the hole, heads for Blackwood.
00:09:07Blackwood runs around the block.
00:09:09Hannah didn't have to block him.
00:09:11Blackwood ran around it, and that's just as good as getting blocked.
00:09:14Hannah's a handful when he's out there in front of you.
00:09:17You can understand running out of his way.
00:09:20Some people say he's been playing hurt.
00:09:23Barry's there, and Betters makes the tackle.
00:09:26Talking about Hannah, he's had a calf injury.
00:09:29He had the neck injury last year.
00:09:32Missed some games earlier on.
00:09:34The game is just inside the 40-yard line.
00:09:36We have 11 1⁄2 minutes to go in the third quarter, and the Dolphins lead 10-3.
00:09:43Patriots trying to get back into this one.
00:09:49A hot crowd at Sullivan Stadium in Foxboro.
00:09:55Brogan goes long.
00:09:57He's got a man, Brogan.
00:10:00Overthrown just a little bit.
00:10:03Judson, 49, and Brown, 43.
00:10:06The free safety in the right corner were back there,
00:10:08but it looked like the intended receiver had a step.
00:10:11He did, Jay, and it was an opportunity he could have completed.
00:10:16As you'll see, Brogan releases to the inside.
00:10:20Now he's going to go back.
00:10:21If the ball was thrown right now to the deep outside,
00:10:24he would have had a chance to at least come up with a play,
00:10:27but fairly good coverage on the play, and with the conditions being what they are today,
00:10:31wet and damp and a little chilly out there, you're not going to have precision throwing.
00:10:35There are Brogan's stats.
00:10:37Brogan had one of his greatest days against Miami.
00:10:40In November of 81, 182 yards on just five catches.
00:10:46From the shotgun, Brogan going downfield again
00:10:50and overthrowing Starring.
00:10:53Starring had a step on Judson.
00:10:57How about Rashad?
00:10:59NFL 85 update.
00:11:03All right, Jay, in Pittsburgh, third quarter action.
00:11:05This is the Steelers' go-ahead touchdown.
00:11:07Walter Abercrombie takes the handoff, goes off left tackle, 32 yards.
00:11:12Touchdown, Pittsburgh takes the lead 7-6.
00:11:18All right, Ahmad, and thanks too for your very insightful look
00:11:22at the underachievers in the National Football League,
00:11:26the New England club today on NFL 85, a very fine feature.
00:11:30Camarillo set to boot the ball.
00:11:33Tommy Vigarito is downfield.
00:11:36Angle to the far sideline.
00:11:39And to the coffin corner, and let's see.
00:11:42Is it a touchback or not?
00:11:44It is.
00:11:45They had to wait to line it up.
00:11:47It was very, very close as it looked for a minute like Camarillo
00:11:51might have put that ball out at about the 1 or 2.
00:11:5410-52 to play in the third quarter.
00:11:57The Dolphins lead 10-3.
00:12:02A day in the country, that's something to look forward to.
00:12:06And so is Ford Tempo, the car that shows up.
00:12:09Brought to you by Ford and your local Ford dealer.
00:12:12Have you driven a Ford lately?
00:12:14By Old Milwaukee and Old Milwaukee Light.
00:12:17It doesn't get any better than this.
00:12:19And by Federal Express.
00:12:21Why fool around with anyone else?
00:12:25The Dolphins.
00:12:34Jay Randolph and Bob Greasy with you.
00:12:37Marino 10 out of 18.
00:12:39First down for the Dolphins from their 20-yard line.
00:12:42They lead 10-3, third quarter.
00:12:44Jensen goes in motion.
00:12:46Pitch comes back.
00:12:48And as they pitch the other way to Hampton,
00:12:51he gets to the 24-yard line.
00:12:54Steve Nelson, 57, on the tackle.
00:12:56Pick up a 4.
00:12:58There's Rod Russ, the defensive coordinator
00:13:00for the New England Patriots last year.
00:13:03A year ago this week, as a matter of fact, Jay,
00:13:06he was fired after this Dolphin game
00:13:09by then-coach Ron Meyer.
00:13:11The first thing, and there's Don Shula,
00:13:14who calls the plays for the Dolphin offense.
00:13:17I'll get back to that story in just a second.
00:13:20All right, and it is 2nd down and 6.
00:13:26Across the 25-yard line,
00:13:29Tony Nathan
00:13:32and Steve Nelson, number 57,
00:13:35made the stop.
00:13:37Roland James, 38.
00:13:38I think that was the first carry of the afternoon
00:13:40for Nathan. It was.
00:13:42Getting back to Rod Russ,
00:13:43the first thing that Raymond Berry did
00:13:45was to go out and rehire
00:13:47Rod Russ as a defensive coordinator.
00:13:49Steve Nelson says he's a genius,
00:13:51and he certainly has done a great job
00:13:53in getting this Patriot defense
00:13:55where it is today.
00:13:57Fans here
00:13:59cheering on this defense.
00:14:013rd down and 2.
00:14:03Out of the shotgun.
00:14:05Marino throws,
00:14:07and it is complete.
00:14:09Pass to the far sideline to Nathan.
00:14:12Picked up 4 and a 1st down.
00:14:15Ron Blackman, number 55,
00:14:17on the tackle.
00:14:19A couple of scores for you.
00:14:21Minnesota leading Detroit
00:14:23as Brown is scored from one yard out,
00:14:25and Tampa Bay and the Giants
00:14:27now are tied up 13-0.
00:14:29Bob, I'm reminded, certainly all of us
00:14:31who remember Nick Bonaconi's great play,
00:14:34wish his son Mark the very best.
00:14:37A tragic accident in that football game
00:14:40recently.
00:14:42The Citadel, and he's going to be
00:14:44getting on this week.
00:14:46Hand off to Hampton.
00:14:48Nothing doing for him over the right side.
00:14:50You're right, Jay.
00:14:52Nick played for the same Patriots for a while,
00:14:54and then down with the Dolphins.
00:14:56Seen a lot of his friends
00:14:58and a lot of the people up here
00:15:00have asked about Nick
00:15:02and wanted us to remember
00:15:04them to him and just say that
00:15:06he and his family
00:15:08and Terry and Mark are all in their thoughts
00:15:10and prayers and just hope for the very best.
00:15:12Yeah, I know that everybody around the country
00:15:15is praying for that situation
00:15:17to turn out well.
00:15:19Second down.
00:15:23Marino's on the run.
00:15:25Throws back against the grain.
00:15:27It's complete at midfield.
00:15:29Boy, Marino did a good job.
00:15:31Excellent job. 14-yard pickup.
00:15:33The pass to Clayton.
00:15:35Claiborne with the coverage.
00:15:38This is a designed rollout
00:15:40where Marino's gonna come straight back
00:15:42and then take off.
00:15:44Watch the block in the back here as he sits outside
00:15:46and then seals everything else to the inside
00:15:48so that Marino can break containment.
00:15:50Woody Bennett, 34.
00:15:52Blocks inside on the defensive end.
00:15:54Now Marino's outside.
00:15:56Gives him more time to throw the football.
00:15:58And right there, you see the ability of this young man
00:16:00to throw the football with great power,
00:16:02sidestepping against the grain.
00:16:07At midfield.
00:16:10And the Dolphins only had 10 men on the field
00:16:12as Dan Johnson comes out there now.
00:16:18And Marino wants to put it up again.
00:16:20And it is incomplete.
00:16:23At the 45-yard line,
00:16:25he was trying to get it to Jensen,
00:16:27the very versatile young man who played, of course,
00:16:29right in these parts at Boston College.
00:16:31Blackman, 55, looked like he might have tipped it.
00:16:34On the last 13 first-down plays,
00:16:37Miami has gained a total of 8 yards.
00:16:39They continue to have that problem on first down,
00:16:42picking up needed yardage to put them in a position
00:16:44to make the offense go.
00:16:46Jensen, you saw, having trouble picking his way through there,
00:16:48but you're right, Jay.
00:16:50And what that causes is a lot of pressure
00:16:52on second and third downs.
00:16:54And it is 2nd and 10.
00:17:00That's Tony Nathan.
00:17:02And he got about 2.
00:17:07Garen Barras, number 60, on the tackle.
00:17:10We've talked about the Dolphin offensive line.
00:17:12Right here is Jeff Tate.
00:17:14He's going to block over the nose.
00:17:15Stevenson will block this way.
00:17:17And Foster will come over and block on a trap.
00:17:20Now watch the offensive line,
00:17:23and you'll see Sims come to meet 61 Foster
00:17:26and really does a pretty good job of stuffing the play.
00:17:29Rod McSwain, the nickelback, has come in there
00:17:32in a prevent defense on 3rd down and 8.
00:17:35Houston leads Kansas City.
00:17:37Cincinnati defeating Buffalo in the 3rd quarter.
00:17:40This is the 8th play of this drive
00:17:42on 3rd and 8 out of the shotgun.
00:17:44Marino's in trouble.
00:17:47And listen to this crowd as they get to the sack.
00:17:54Tippett and Blackman were there.
00:17:57Those outside linebackers
00:17:59fired across the sack Dan Marino.
00:18:03He wanted to get outside again.
00:18:05He wants to roll to his left,
00:18:07but the penetration is such and it's upfield
00:18:09that he cannot get outside.
00:18:11Then he's dead because from the right side,
00:18:13the offense set back so he can try and run left.
00:18:16What happened was he couldn't get outside
00:18:19and couldn't break containment.
00:18:20Good play by the Patriots.
00:18:22Reggie Roby
00:18:25at the punt to Irving Fryer.
00:18:28It's a beauty.
00:18:29It's a beauty.
00:18:30Fryer at the 13th.
00:18:32Oh, a great block to spring Fryer down the sideline.
00:18:36Fryer is out of bounds
00:18:39at the 48-yard line.
00:18:43Woody Bennett knocked him down.
00:18:4648-yard punt, a 36-yard return.
00:18:53We're not a company,
00:18:54but outstanding people come to us every day.
00:18:57People who want to make a contribution to a team
00:18:59and do work that...
00:19:00Look at this punt return.
00:19:02Jim Bowman, number 28 for the Patriots,
00:19:05is going to get a great block on Robert Sowell
00:19:08to spring Fryer on this run right here.
00:19:11Bowman, the rookie, it's a great block.
00:19:13They have brought the ball back,
00:19:14saying he stepped out of bounds.
00:19:16He stepped out at the 34,
00:19:18so it was a 23-yard return.
00:19:21Hand off to Tony Collins.
00:19:25Collins to the 38-yard line,
00:19:29and the tackle made by Mark Brown, number 51.
00:19:32Let me correct something I said a moment ago
00:19:34before I really get under the gun here.
00:19:37Jim Jensen went to school at Boston University,
00:19:40not Boston College.
00:19:41I could get in real trouble around these parts.
00:19:43There is a difference up here.
00:19:44There is a difference, yes, sir.
00:19:47Miami 10, New England 3.
00:19:505.20 to go in the third period.
00:19:55Strike.
00:20:00Craig James, fumble,
00:20:03and I think they're going to call it dead.
00:20:04They will.
00:20:05I think they're...
00:20:06Oh, wait a minute.
00:20:07They're going to say that Miami has it.
00:20:10The one official had called it dead,
00:20:13and now I think they indicate Miami football
00:20:17on a turnover against the Patriots here.
00:20:23Well, you see that statistic right there.
00:20:26The Patriots are very upset, as you can see.
00:20:30And they've spread it around, Jay.
00:20:32It hasn't been any one person,
00:20:34the quarterback losing the fumbles
00:20:36or the backs or the wide receivers.
00:20:38Take a look and see if we can see
00:20:40as Hannah 73 comes around the block on Blackwood.
00:20:45Now does the ball come...
00:20:46Yeah, he was...
00:20:48I don't believe he was down when that ball came out.
00:20:50I don't think he was either.
00:20:51It was a pretty close call.
00:20:55And it will belong to Miami.
00:21:00Try to check and see who came up with the ball.
00:21:05A little tough to tell.
00:21:06Here's another view of it.
00:21:09Yes, it was out.
00:21:10It was out before he hit the ground.
00:21:12And it was Jackie Shipp.
00:21:14Jackie Shipp recovered the fumble.
00:21:17Oh, another turnover.
00:21:18And Miami leading 10-3.
00:21:21Has it at the Patriot 49.
00:21:23And the Patriots win it right back.
00:21:37Steve Nelson gets it.
00:21:39Take a look here now.
00:21:40Watch the snap and watch Stephenson.
00:21:42Now Stephenson is the center.
00:21:44He is going to step this way
00:21:45to try and make his block.
00:21:46In doing so, he moves his target area.
00:21:50And by doing that,
00:21:51the quarterback doesn't get the ball in his hands,
00:21:54but he gets it off on his leg.
00:21:55The centers, a lot of time,
00:21:57are responsible for these quarterback-center exchanges
00:22:00more than the quarterbacks are.
00:22:01And that was an example of the quarterback
00:22:04not getting the ball from the center.
00:22:06Steve Nelson got it back.
00:22:08And after two turnovers,
00:22:10Grogan throws.
00:22:11Bat it down.
00:22:14Mark Brown, number 51,
00:22:16making a nice play in front of Irving Fryer.
00:22:18Grogan has been wanting to go to Fryer
00:22:21for most of his big plays today.
00:22:25Ahmad Rashad set in New York for an NFL 85 update.
00:22:31All right, Jay, in Houston, third quarter action.
00:22:33Houston finishes off a 63-yard drive
00:22:36with this three-yard touchdown pass
00:22:38from Warren Moon to Chris Dressel.
00:22:40They lead 13-6.
00:22:44♪♪
00:22:48Grogan down the sideline, incomplete.
00:22:52Grogan trying to get it to number 83,
00:22:55Cedric Jones,
00:22:56but Brown, the free safety,
00:22:59had the coverage.
00:23:00But Brown on a good play, Jay.
00:23:02He's almost had two interceptions in this game.
00:23:05He is coming over.
00:23:06He's got the deep outside at the bottom of your screen,
00:23:09makes a good play,
00:23:10and then Fryer actually, well, they both break it up.
00:23:13I was going to say I thought Fryer turned defensive back
00:23:15and knocked it away,
00:23:16but I think the collision knocked it away.
00:23:18But Brown playing in there very quick,
00:23:21young defensive back, second-year,
00:23:2410th-round draft choice.
00:23:25It was a surprise to make the ball club last year.
00:23:27It's really come on.
00:23:30On third down, Miami in the prevent defense.
00:23:33Grogan has time.
00:23:34He throws too high,
00:23:36intended for Stephan Starring.
00:23:41Starring covered by William Judson.
00:23:45He had him open that time.
00:23:47Here's a battle between McNeil and Cedric Jones.
00:23:52Like a face mask, a little head slap.
00:23:54It's tit for tat.
00:23:56It's tit for tat.
00:23:57You hit me in the head, I hit you in the head.
00:23:58Now they're talking about it.
00:24:01And now they're going to say, okay.
00:24:02Okay, you did a good job.
00:24:03Nice play.
00:24:07Rich Camarillo,
00:24:08fifth-year veteran from Washington.
00:24:14Bigarito back to receive this punt.
00:24:17It's a dandy.
00:24:18Bigarito at the eight-yard line.
00:24:22Gets to the 15, to the 20,
00:24:24and goes down as Ed Williams, number 54,
00:24:28is there to make the play.
00:24:2952-yard punt, 13-yard return.
00:24:32Moore in a moment.
00:24:39Mount Hood, Oregon and Old Milwaukee
00:24:42both mean something great to these guys.
00:24:44Mount Hood means the best.
00:24:51A handoff to Davenport.
00:24:53And Davenport, who fumbled the last time he had the ball,
00:24:57picks up three.
00:25:00Tackle made by Roland James, number 38,
00:25:02the strong safety.
00:25:04Only touchdown of the day came in the opening drive,
00:25:07and it was Davenport who scored.
00:25:09Take a look at this chart, this graphic.
00:25:11The Dolphins in 1984.
00:25:13At the start of 84, only one player,
00:25:15Dwight Stevenson, is still there.
00:25:20Laxo, Kuchenberg retired.
00:25:22Injuries have taken some of them,
00:25:24but an entirely new offensive line for the Dolphins
00:25:27except for the center.
00:25:29Tony Nathan to the 25-yard line.
00:25:33Don Blackman, number 55, undercut him.
00:25:35You talk about injuries, Eric Laxo with a knee injury,
00:25:38Bob Baumhauer with a knee and ankle problem,
00:25:41or snoopers out.
00:25:43Had their hands full with injuries,
00:25:45with fellows who didn't show up in camp.
00:25:47And what they've done, Jay,
00:25:48is they've used up all of their backups.
00:25:50Taves is playing very well, Foster's playing well,
00:25:53and Cleveland Green has played well,
00:25:55but the backups now are a rookie fourth-round draft choice,
00:26:00Jeff Dellenbach.
00:26:02Joe Ferguson just scored in that Minnesota-Detroit game,
00:26:05Minnesota leading at 13 to 10,
00:26:07Miami four out of nine on third-down conversions
00:26:11from the shotgun.
00:26:15Complete out at the 40 to the 44-yard line.
00:26:19Oh, a fine throw to Mark Clayton from Marino there
00:26:22in a pickup of 17 yards.
00:26:25Ronnie Lippitt, 42, on the tackle.
00:26:28I'm sure that Marino and Clayton are happy to see
00:26:31some man-to-man coverage,
00:26:33unlike what they've been catching the last few weeks, deep zones.
00:26:36New England's playing some zone on first down,
00:26:39but on third down and passing situations,
00:26:42they play a lot of man-to-man coverage,
00:26:44and it's giving Clayton and Marino an opportunity
00:26:46to beat some man coverage.
00:26:48Clayton over the 100-yard mark
00:26:50for the seventh time this year.
00:26:52Two-and-a-half minutes to play in the third quarter.
00:26:55Dolphins lead at 10 to 3.
00:27:00That's Hampton.
00:27:02He got away from one of the Patriots,
00:27:04but he couldn't get away from the rest of them.
00:27:07Written out of bounds by Lester Williams, number 72,
00:27:10a loss of about three yards on the play.
00:27:12Williams.
00:27:13Big Garen Varrison was in there breaking up the play.
00:27:17Williams was on IR until a few weeks ago with a knee injury.
00:27:22Oh, Varrison's a talented-looking raw youngster, isn't he,
00:27:25the rookie number 60 from Stanford?
00:27:28They say that Julie Adams is going to retire this year,
00:27:30and if he does,
00:27:32Garen Varrison is the heir apparent for that position.
00:27:34Lester Williams was drafted four years ago,
00:27:37the same draft that produced Kenneth Simms and Andre Tippett.
00:27:41They've got some pretty good defensive players in that one.
00:27:43Second down and 12.
00:27:48Over the middle, the tight end, number 87,
00:27:51Johnson makes another nice catch.
00:27:53Roland James had the tackle.
00:27:55They get half a dozen on the play.
00:27:58Playing in a very misty situation here.
00:28:03Green Bay now leading Chicago.
00:28:05Jim Zorn has thrown a 55-yarder to Jesse Clark.
00:28:10Zorn surfacing with Green Bay, and they lead it 10-7.
00:28:15Here it is 10-3, Dolphins.
00:28:18Third down and seven at the 47-yard line for Miami.
00:28:32Marino going long, and it is incomplete,
00:28:37and there's a flag.
00:28:39Mark Clayton was down there with Rod McSwain,
00:28:43number 23, the nickel back.
00:28:47Penalty marker thrown.
00:28:56Pass interference, number 23.
00:29:00It goes against McSwain.
00:29:03Sets up a first down for Miami.
00:29:0538 yards, they get on the penalty.
00:29:07There's a good close-up.
00:29:08They're out there by themselves.
00:29:10This is something Clayton and Marino have not had the last few weeks.
00:29:13Little arm, the right arm, prevented him from getting back.
00:29:16You saw Clayton with the vision back to the ball,
00:29:19and McSwain did not see it,
00:29:21and prevented him with his right arm from coming in
00:29:23and having an opportunity to make the catch.
00:29:25That was a good call.
00:29:27Miami has the first down at the Patriots' 16-yard line.
00:29:3050 seconds to go in the third quarter.
00:29:35Lorenzo Hampton got maybe a yard.
00:29:40Good job by Blackman.
00:29:42Blackman, who went to school at Tulsa, number 55.
00:29:47A fourth-round draft choice in 81.
00:29:49Started the day with five sacks.
00:29:52We mentioned early on that Blackman and Tippett, Nelson, McGrew,
00:29:57are outstanding in the linebacking situation.
00:30:01Adams.
00:30:04Big Julius, number 85, is out of the game right now with a bruised leg.
00:30:12Second down, nine.
00:30:15And incomplete at the five-yard line.
00:30:19Dan Johnson, the intended receiver.
00:30:21Roland James had the coverage, number 38.
00:30:24Eight seconds left in the third quarter.
00:30:26The ball was thrown a little bit behind Dan Johnson,
00:30:29and Marino's shaking his head.
00:30:30He says, I know I didn't get it out in front of you because he had some running room,
00:30:33but it's continuing to mist, and it's very difficult conditions, Jay,
00:30:38because the officials can't keep the ball dry.
00:30:40The field is getting a little bit wet from the rain and the mist,
00:30:43and it's tough conditions for the offense.
00:30:46We've seen some turnovers, but nobody's taking advantage of them in this quarter.
00:30:49And our technicians doing a great job of giving you these pictures
00:30:53with a lot of mist on their lenses.
00:30:56They're doing as best they can.
00:30:59Marino over the middle, incomplete.
00:31:03That was the tenth play in the drive intended for Tony Nathan, Fred Marion,
00:31:08the free safety 31, who played at Miami, had the coverage.
00:31:14Give credit to Rod Rust, the coordinator and the defense for the Patriots
00:31:18because they stationed Marion right there in the middle of the field.
00:31:22They knew that in third-down situations the Dolphins liked to go to Nathan,
00:31:26and they had him right there in the middle of the field,
00:31:29and he was there, and Marino had to throw it low.
00:31:33It is going to be a 32-yard field goal attempt.
00:31:39Quad Reves, the rookie.
00:31:43And it is up, and it is good.
00:31:46This young man has done a splendid job.
00:31:49He ran off on Shaman and Garcia.
00:31:52The end of the third quarter, 13-3 the Dolphins,
00:31:57and we'll be back right after these messages from your local station.
00:32:04Tonight, the mission of the lives of ten men rests in the power of one.
00:32:09Tonight, a special one-hour episode.
00:32:12This big crowd watching the Dolphins and the Patriots,
00:32:18and the Dolphins up by ten.
00:32:20Stephens starring Townsend,
00:32:25and it will come out to the 20-yard line.
00:32:28We start the fourth quarter in the mist here in Foxborough,
00:32:34and there is the way the scoring has gone.
00:32:36The only touchdown of the day, a four-yard romp by Davenport
00:32:40in the first quarter for Miami.
00:32:42You've got to give credit to Chuck Studley.
00:32:44A lot of criticism the last couple of weeks going to Detroit
00:32:48and having Detroit score 31 points.
00:32:51Tampa Bay scoring 38.
00:32:53He has come up here and really shut down New England's offense.
00:32:57Well, and Don Shulis stood very strongly by Studley
00:33:01with all of the personnel problems.
00:33:04Pass going out to Collins.
00:33:06Collins is over the 30, 35, still going.
00:33:10Out of bounds at the 41-yard line, Glenn Blackwood.
00:33:15And Jackie Shipp knocked him out, a 21-yard gain.
00:33:21Watch the offensive line.
00:33:23As he set up the screen, 73 now.
00:33:26You see him go off to the right along with Collins, 33, who gets the ball.
00:33:3075 is Morris.
00:33:32Good play now.
00:33:33Hog Hannah and Holloway, if they could run a little bit faster,
00:33:39he may have gained a little bit more yardage
00:33:41because they were blocking at the front court.
00:33:43They went that way, didn't they?
00:33:45All right, first down.
00:33:47Longest game on first down today for the Patriots right there.
00:33:52And this one over the middle, complete to James.
00:33:55And James outside at the 45, the 40, down to the 37-yard line.
00:34:01And this crowd is fired up now.
00:34:0822-yard gain on the play.
00:34:11Lankford and Brown made the tackle.
00:34:13You notice that when Groban gets in trouble, he's going to his backs.
00:34:17Collins on a screen on first down.
00:34:19He looks deep and dumps it off at the right time,
00:34:22gives James an opportunity to break a tackle.
00:34:25James says, I want the football more.
00:34:27I want to make some big plays, and he can do it.
00:34:30A lot of time, 14 minutes to play.
00:34:32We're in the fourth quarter.
00:34:34Dolphins leading 13-3.
00:34:37Whistle as James got the ball.
00:34:41And a flag is down.
00:34:47Referee Fred Wyatt, ball start.
00:34:50It's against John Hanna, number 73.
00:34:53Hanna, who is now in his 13th year.
00:34:57Raymond Berry.
00:35:02Worked with Frank Royals at Arkansas, Dallas, Detroit.
00:35:06The Patriots was here with Chuck Fairbanks.
00:35:0911 years behind him as an NFL assistant.
00:35:13Miami had the ball 11-43 in the third period,
00:35:18but only came up with three points.
00:35:20They lead it 13-3.
00:35:24First and 15, and a big hole opens up for James.
00:35:28And he gets about 7 or 8 yards as Paul Lankford, number 44,
00:35:34the corner man, made the stop.
00:35:37The left side is two pro bowlers, Holloway and Hanna.
00:35:40Both get good blocks, although Holloway had his arm out,
00:35:43his left arm out, hooking Bo Camper a little bit.
00:35:47James saw the daylight to the outside and jumps to the outside,
00:35:50but those two pro bowlers on the left side,
00:35:52that's why you see a lot of running by New England to their left.
00:35:55Wouldn't you run behind those people too?
00:35:57I'd stay behind them as much as I could.
00:36:02Second down and 7.
00:36:05Grogan, down the far sideline,
00:36:07overthrows the intended receiver, Craig James.
00:36:13Bob Radzinski, the veteran linebacker,
00:36:15was isolated out there, one-on-one with him.
00:36:17He was, and he had good coverage.
00:36:19And Steve, that look on Grogan's face, he says,
00:36:21hey, it was supposed to work, we had that planned all week,
00:36:24it worked well in practice.
00:36:26But you've got to give the credit to the Dolphin defense,
00:36:29they're playing very well and covering.
00:36:31That was a fake reverse.
00:36:32A lot of things for the defense to look at,
00:36:34but still they kept their coverage.
00:36:37Patriots looking for their fourth straight victory.
00:36:40If they get it, they're going to have to come from behind.
00:36:4312.48 to play.
00:36:45Third down and 7 at the 34.
00:36:52Grogan, rushed, gets it out there, it is complete.
00:36:56And it is Stephan Starring,
00:36:58but he's a little short of the first down.
00:37:01Starring, hit by Don McNeil,
00:37:03the extra defensive back for the Dolphins,
00:37:05and let's see what they do here on fourth down.
00:37:14Perry says, let's go for it.
00:37:18Now, as you see, Starring, the Dolphins had a blitz on.
00:37:22He read the blitz and he ran a blitz adjustment route.
00:37:25You can't fault him for not going far enough on third down
00:37:28on that play because he had to stop
00:37:30because the Dolphins were in his face.
00:37:34All right, they had Withers on the field,
00:37:36now he's come back out.
00:37:39And they're going to take a timeout.
00:37:41Tutupu is also out there,
00:37:43and they're going to talk things over.
00:37:45With 11.58 to play,
00:37:47we'll take a timeout.
00:37:49The Dolphins 13, the Patriots 3.
00:37:54When the going gets rough,
00:37:56you need a tough four-by-four like this.
00:37:58The 86...
00:38:02Fourth and one, they've got a tackle in the backfield,
00:38:05and here is a trick play,
00:38:07and it is a touchdown to Greg Hawthorne!
00:38:14Oh, the play on fourth down!
00:38:17And they're going wild at first down.
00:38:21Bob, what they did was put 67,
00:38:25Steve Moore in the backfield.
00:38:27They had three tight ends in there,
00:38:29and Grogan was able to throw to Hawthorne.
00:38:33They also had Plunkett in there as that extra tight end.
00:38:36Right here is 67 Moore.
00:38:39They're going to fake this way,
00:38:40and Hawthorne will come from this side
00:38:42and make the catch.
00:38:44You've got to be watching the Chicago Bears
00:38:47You've got to be watching the Chicago Bears
00:38:49and Perry, William Perry,
00:38:51the Dolphins had to see it also
00:38:53and said they're going to use him to block,
00:38:55so they're going to run left,
00:38:56and they didn't,
00:38:57and he pulled a play-action pass.
00:38:59We've got a ball game.
00:39:01Hawthorne's first reception
00:39:04with the Patriots back from Wavers
00:39:07when Brock went down.
00:39:17Today's game is brought to you by
00:39:19Ford and your local Ford dealer.
00:39:21Have you driven a Ford lately?
00:39:24By Coors and Coors Light,
00:39:26beers with a difference worth tasting.
00:39:28And by Alcoa, Aluminum Company of America,
00:39:31world leader in aluminum technology.
00:39:39This sellout crowd at Foxboro
00:39:42is so kind of fired up now.
00:39:4613 to 10, the Dolphins.
00:39:48Franklin kicks off.
00:39:54Hardy, the tight end,
00:39:55takes it out over the 25
00:39:58to the 27-yard line.
00:40:01Well, let's go back to that previous play,
00:40:03the trick play.
00:40:04I mean, Perry is supposed to be a conservative fella.
00:40:08Number 67 right here is an offensive tackle.
00:40:11Now, let's run this play.
00:40:13That is Steve Moore.
00:40:14Now, watch him block.
00:40:15Now, watch him make his block right here.
00:40:17Now, look at the...
00:40:18That's holding right here.
00:40:20Comes up and grabs a hold of Robert Sowell.
00:40:24Now, that was not caught.
00:40:26But if...
00:40:27But if, um...
00:40:29Raymond Berry is using his offense attack
00:40:32on the backfield,
00:40:33can a pass be not far behind it?
00:40:36Mike Ditka is doing it
00:40:37with William Perry in Chicago.
00:40:40Hand off for Miami.
00:40:43Going to Nathan,
00:40:44and he gets a few up the middle.
00:40:46Tough going.
00:40:47Steve Nelson made the play.
00:40:48Perry caught a touchdown pass
00:40:50in that Chicago game today.
00:40:51The refrigerator, he opens the doors
00:40:53for everything, doesn't he?
00:40:55Steve Moore is probably on the sideline now
00:40:57talking to Raymond, saying,
00:40:58Listen, I did my block.
00:41:00Although Raymond doesn't know,
00:41:01he didn't do it very well.
00:41:03Now, I want to catch a pass.
00:41:0611-14.
00:41:0811-14 to play here.
00:41:11Dolphins leading by three.
00:41:14Second down.
00:41:16Double!
00:41:17And Marino covers it.
00:41:24You know, Jay,
00:41:25Dwight Stevenson is so quick,
00:41:27and whenever you have a nose tackle on you
00:41:30that is quick,
00:41:31sometimes you snap the ball
00:41:33and stand up too quickly,
00:41:34and that has happened twice already
00:41:36in the second half
00:41:37to Marino and Dwight Stevenson.
00:41:39Detroit and Minnesota now tied up.
00:41:41The Giants have taken the lead
00:41:42over Tampa Bay,
00:41:44and Cincinnati leads Buffalo
00:41:4623-10.
00:41:49Third down and six.
00:41:57Marino over the middle.
00:41:58It is complete.
00:41:59Catch made by Clayton.
00:42:01First down at the 40-yard line.
00:42:04Rod McSwain, 23, on the tackle.
00:42:06They pick up nine.
00:42:08Clock running with 10-20 to play in this game.
00:42:11Mark Clayton is just eating McSwain alive.
00:42:14He's catching deep passes.
00:42:15He's had interference at the bottom of your screen.
00:42:17Watch him get to the inside of him.
00:42:19Fakes.
00:42:20Then he goes inside,
00:42:21and you can complete this pass all day.
00:42:23It's a safe, easy, quick pass.
00:42:25You don't have to protect very long,
00:42:27and McSwain or somebody
00:42:29has got to be able to stop Mark Clayton.
00:42:33The Patriots, you remember, took a timeout
00:42:36here in the second half.
00:42:37They have two remaining.
00:42:39And this one is almost intercepted,
00:42:42and there's a penalty marker thrown.
00:42:45Fred Marion almost picked it up.
00:42:48And let's see what the call is
00:42:50as they were trying to get it to Clayton again.
00:42:57It's against the Patriots.
00:43:04Illegal contact.
00:43:05Number 42, first down.
00:43:08Ronnie Lippitt, number 42,
00:43:11who played at Miami.
00:43:13They like to work on him.
00:43:15Here we see it again.
00:43:16This time, there's a jam right there,
00:43:19past five yards.
00:43:20You can't touch him
00:43:21once they get past five yards downfield.
00:43:24That was not interference
00:43:25because the ball was not catchable,
00:43:26but early on, the official had to wait
00:43:29to throw the flag
00:43:30to see that it was going to be a pass,
00:43:32and that was the call.
00:43:33The Dolphins have a first down
00:43:35at the 45-yard line.
00:43:379.50 remaining in this game.
00:43:39Davenport trying to get outside.
00:43:41Does.
00:43:42He's at the 50.
00:43:43Bangs his way out of bounds
00:43:44at the 48-yard line.
00:43:46Fred Marion, number 31,
00:43:48making the tackle.
00:43:50The Patriots this afternoon
00:43:51have been penalized on 11 occasions.
00:43:55The Dolphins have not had a penalty all day,
00:43:58and we've seen the second-half penalties
00:44:01that the Patriots have had
00:44:02have really hurt them.
00:44:03But remember, in the first half,
00:44:04the big one when they had a touchdown
00:44:06called back because of illegal motion.
00:44:10Second down and two.
00:44:21Jensen comes in motion.
00:44:23Nathan.
00:44:25First down at the 44-yard line.
00:44:28Steve Nelson, the tackle,
00:44:29the inside linebacker.
00:44:32Top tackler, number 57.
00:44:34One of the very best.
00:44:35What a great player Steve Nelson is.
00:44:37Maybe not your quickest,
00:44:38but certainly one of the smartest.
00:44:40Redskins really rolling,
00:44:42and the Giants now leading
00:44:43Tampa Bay 19 to 13.
00:44:46Schubert with a 41-yard field goal.
00:44:49Miami trying to hold onto this football, Bob,
00:44:54and eat up some clock
00:44:55and see if they can get some points
00:44:57on the board as well.
00:45:02That's Nathan.
00:45:03Nathan to the 41-yard line, about three.
00:45:08Tackle made by Don Blackman, 55,
00:45:10and we have 8.50 remaining to be played,
00:45:13and the Dolphins have a 13-10 advantage.
00:45:18Next week, New England will play the Seahawks
00:45:21at Seattle at 4 Eastern time.
00:45:24Miami meeting the Jets at Miami at 4 Eastern.
00:45:38And incomplete.
00:45:40Oh, I thought that Clayton
00:45:41had made a remarkable catch.
00:45:43He had it for just an instant.
00:45:46Ronnie Lippitt, number 42, with the coverage.
00:45:49And he had good coverage,
00:45:50but Clayton has got such great leaping ability
00:45:53that he can go up and take the ball away.
00:45:55Now, Lippitt lets him get to the inside.
00:45:58The ball's going to be coming from the inside,
00:46:00and so it gives Clayton the first shot at it.
00:46:02He has got it and then drops it.
00:46:06There's a great angle coming right at you.
00:46:10The ball is caught and then slipped out.
00:46:15The Dolphins can't complain about deep coverage today.
00:46:18They've had plenty of opportunities.
00:46:24Marino throws, and it should have been intercepted.
00:46:29Ronnie Lippitt was there.
00:46:32Marino trying to get it to Vigarito.
00:46:34He obviously must have cut the wrong way.
00:46:36There was a miscommunication here someplace.
00:46:39Take a look here.
00:46:40Vigarito's on the inside.
00:46:41He has to fight the jam.
00:46:42Now he's coming to the inside,
00:46:44and a miscommunication between Marino and Vigarito,
00:46:49and Lippitt should have had the play.
00:46:52There are drills that defensive backs do,
00:46:54and he should have had that.
00:46:55He could have possibly gone all the way for a touchdown.
00:46:58Roby to do the putting.
00:47:06And it is into the end zone, just into the end zone.
00:47:12It'll come out to the 20-yard line.
00:47:14A 41-yard putt will have more in a moment.
00:47:18We're not a company.
00:47:20But no company has more pride in what they do.
00:47:23Oh, I'm going to have to remember the snowplow game.
00:47:25We were here.
00:47:26I wonder where Mr. Henderson is these days.
00:47:29You'd think they don't remember that in Miami, too.
00:47:31They do.
00:47:32Oh, boy.
00:47:33Brogan on first down.
00:47:35A lot of time runs out of there at the 25, the 30,
00:47:40and he's got a first down.
00:47:43He paid for it.
00:47:44He picked up 12 yards.
00:47:46William Judson, number 49, on the tackle.
00:47:50Steve's from the old school now.
00:47:52He hasn't learned to slide.
00:47:53He still dives in.
00:47:55Everybody's covered in the secondary.
00:47:57Good pass protection.
00:47:58There's a new rule in the league this year
00:48:00that if a quarterback goes downfield and slides,
00:48:02gives himself up, then he can't be hit.
00:48:05Steve's got to read the rule book.
00:48:07Be a lot safer.
00:48:09Seven and a half to play.
00:48:12Miami leads 13 to 10.
00:48:16Pitch comes to Collins.
00:48:20Collins fights to the 36-yard line.
00:48:24Blackwood, number 47, and chip 50 on the stop.
00:48:28I mentioned that New England's next road game
00:48:31will be at Seattle for Eastern Time two weeks from today.
00:48:35Next week, they have the Colts here,
00:48:37and that's a 1 o'clock Eastern Time start.
00:48:40And next week, Miami goes against the Jets.
00:48:45The Jets at Indianapolis later on today, of course.
00:48:48Right now, second down and six.
00:48:56And complete to Collins and midfield.
00:49:01First down, Jackie Shipp on the tackle.
00:49:0414-yard pass play.
00:49:07Groban has been a little high all day,
00:49:10but Collins making a very nice catch.
00:49:13This is a missed communication in the secondary.
00:49:17There's nobody around him.
00:49:19Shipp to the inside is the closest one.
00:49:21Brzezinski comes in from the outside and misses another tackle.
00:49:24Good play by the Patriots,
00:49:26and Groban has got them nibbling away, moving down the field.
00:49:29Collins had 109 yards on six catches last Sunday.
00:49:33Now it's Weathers in there along with the 2-poo.
00:49:37And James breaks through
00:49:41inside the 40-yard line, down to the 36-yard line.
00:49:46Frank James.
00:49:49James out of SMU.
00:49:53Two touchdowns last week, pass for another.
00:49:56He can do it all.
00:49:58The offensive line firing out.
00:50:01Good running lane inside as both linebackers,
00:50:05Brown and Shipp, are blocked.
00:50:09Linebackers have to be more aggressive in meeting the guards
00:50:12as the play comes right at them, Jay.
00:50:14Pickup of 12.
00:50:17Glenn Blackwood made the tackle.
00:50:20525 to play.
00:50:23First down at the 36.
00:50:26Tony Collins at the 30.
00:50:29And another first down.
00:50:32Barnes on the play.
00:50:33Bud Brown ran him out.
00:50:35And this sellout crowd here in Foxborough
00:50:38is really rolling with this club as they march down the field.
00:50:42Steve Grogan is on a roll.
00:50:44He is calling the plays.
00:50:45He's mixing them up as Blackwood gets blocked,
00:50:48and Brzezinski is blocked to the inside by Ramsey.
00:50:51Bud Brown over to knock him out.
00:50:53So many times, Jay, I've been involved in this series,
00:50:56and Grogan will not have had a good half.
00:50:58As I said in the first half, his completion percentage is not what is important.
00:51:02Guy brings him back, and he's doing it right here.
00:51:07First down at the 23-yard line.
00:51:13Penalty markers are down.
00:51:15Greg James.
00:51:16James fights his way to the 13-yard line.
00:51:20Hugh Green, 55, on the tackle.
00:51:22Now a penalty marker goes down.
00:51:24There was some extracurricular activity at the 5-yard line.
00:51:29There's no way to lay on Ravel this one.
00:51:34Friar, the wide receiver, got inside and made an excellent block.
00:51:38As we see, it's against the Dolphins on the safety,
00:51:41and there may have been some follow-up due to that good block that he made.
00:51:53Offside, defense.
00:51:5998 yards for James today.
00:52:03He hasn't had a 100-yard game this season, as Don Shula looks on.
00:52:07He had 98 against the Packers back in September.
00:52:1196 yards on 15 carries last week.
00:52:17So it is first down at the 13-yard line.
00:52:25That's the first penalty for Miami.
00:52:38Pitch back coming to James.
00:52:41Nothing there for him.
00:52:43Doug Benner's doing the job.
00:52:44Big number, 75.
00:52:51Matt Barr has kicked the 30-yard field goal.
00:52:53Cleveland has the lead.
00:52:56Bill Kenny to Stephon Page, and they're tied at 20 in the fourth quarter.
00:53:01Another field goal for Schubert.
00:53:03He's kicked four, 13 all there.
00:53:06Detroit and Minnesota.
00:53:08Cincinnati leading Buffalo in the fourth quarter.
00:53:1599 yards on the day for James.
00:53:19Second down and nine.
00:53:21Frank James down to the two.
00:53:26Or it was Titupu.
00:53:27Wait a minute.
00:53:28Was it Titupu?
00:53:29It was.
00:53:30Mosey, Titupu broke through.
00:53:36A big guy from USC.
00:53:38Watch the linebacker right here as Hannah comes straight out
00:53:41and makes a block on him,
00:53:43and you'll see a gaping hole in the middle of Dolphin defense.
00:53:47Right there, head on, hog Hannah on the linebacker,
00:53:50and Titupu runs right past him into the secondary,
00:53:53and you're in trouble when your safeties make the first contact.
00:53:57Brogan asking for quiet.
00:54:01Withers and Titupu.
00:54:05Mosey, Titupu comes up short.
00:54:10Near the one-yard line.
00:54:12Brown and Shipp and Betters are all there right there.
00:54:17Mosey's mooses.
00:54:20Some of Titupu's fans.
00:54:22Mosey is a very popular player on this team with the fans.
00:54:25In fact, you saw his fan club.
00:54:27Very valuable player on the special teams.
00:54:29Some people think he should be playing a little bit more on the regular situation.
00:54:33Patriots have done the job on the ground.
00:54:36315 to play.
00:54:38Dolphins 13, Patriots 10.
00:54:40Second down, goal to go.
00:54:45Brogan rolling.
00:54:46Brogan, touchdown!
00:54:50Ooh.
00:55:11Steve Brogan's got that football.
00:55:1431st rushing touchdown of his career,
00:55:17and I think he's going to put that one on the mantle, Bob Gracie.
00:55:20I think he will, too, Jay, as we take a look at Don Shulin, his stride over.
00:55:24I'm sure they worked on this play.
00:55:26Brogan did it two weeks ago against the Jets.
00:55:28They knew he could run the ball,
00:55:30but you saw Brzezinski was back covering the receiver.
00:55:34As we get the completion of the extra point,
00:55:36if he would have come up to make the tackle on Brogan,
00:55:38he would have just dumped it over his head.
00:55:41Three minutes to play,
00:55:43and the Patriots have the lead.
00:55:49Bigger engines were easy on oil,
00:55:52but today's smaller, higher revving engines are tougher.
00:55:55They can break down an oil's viscosity within 15.
00:55:58Brogan has captured the lead, and we remind you to stay tuned
00:56:01because coming up, many of you will see the Raiders in Seattle,
00:56:04the Jets in Indianapolis, or Denver in San Diego.
00:56:07Check your local listings.
00:56:10A double-header day for you, and boy, has this been exciting.
00:56:14That's Hampton coming out at the 10th,
00:56:16and they give it off to Carter.
00:56:19Carter, and penalty marker goes down.
00:56:22Carter got it with a 22-yard line.
00:56:25It was Greg Hawthorne, number 27, on the tackle.
00:56:31And now we'll see what Fred Wyeth can tell us about this play.
00:56:37Illegal block in the back, number 53.
00:56:44The call goes against Jay Brophy, the linebacker.
00:56:56Steve Brogan on the sideline.
00:56:59He's reborn, you might say, earlier in the season
00:57:04when Easton was going very poorly.
00:57:06He thought maybe that Barry would put him in the game,
00:57:08and he said, when he didn't put me in then,
00:57:10he said, I didn't think I would ever play this year.
00:57:13But he's the quarterback now, and he's doing a great job for him.
00:57:17Dan Marino, can he make some magic?
00:57:202.53 remaining.
00:57:25Marino steps up and throws, and it is incomplete.
00:57:31The pass skidded into the hands of Mark Clayton.
00:57:35It was underthrown.
00:57:46Marino has been held touchdownless only three times
00:57:51during his short career.
00:57:54Versus New England, versus Houston and the Jets.
00:57:58Twice last year and twice this year,
00:58:00and how many times can you expect Dan Marino to bring you back?
00:58:05Second and ten from the 12-yard line.
00:58:10Over the middle, almost intercepted.
00:58:13Intended for Joe Rose, and Fred Marion almost had a touchdown there.
00:58:19If he could have held on, he could have just walked in.
00:58:23Woo-hoo!
00:58:27Here's Fred Marion right here as Rose comes across the field.
00:58:31Marino will not see him, and he'll step in front of it,
00:58:34and you're right, Jay, if he could have picked it off,
00:58:37it would have been six points.
00:58:38As you see Marion sneaking around, sees it coming.
00:58:43Good play by Marion.
00:58:46And now third down and ten.
00:58:50And the Dolphins between a rock and a hard place.
00:58:55Long throw downfield, intercepted.
00:58:58Rob McSwain, now they say it's incomplete.
00:59:02Thought McSwain held to the ball, but he didn't.
00:59:05Trying to go to Clayton again.
00:59:10Pretty good coverage this time, but this is a frustration throw.
00:59:14Marino tries to get it in one more time.
00:59:17Clayton doing his very best.
00:59:18This time McSwain does the best job.
00:59:21That time he just dropped it.
00:59:23Jim Bowman seemed to knock that ball away from him.
00:59:25He had it.
00:59:29Here's the punch.
00:59:30Breyer is downfield.
00:59:32Fair catch called for at the 36-yard line.
00:59:36So we've got 227 left to play.
00:59:39That was a 52-yard punch.
00:59:41The Dolphins are down 17 to 13.
00:59:45And coming up next, don't forget,
00:59:47many of you have seen the Raiders in Seattle,
00:59:49or the Jets in Indianapolis, or Denver in San Diego.
00:59:52A doubleheader day for you here on NBC,
00:59:55and this has been a wonderful way to kick it off.
00:59:58It's not over yet.
01:00:00You know, Jay, the play that turned this whole game around,
01:00:02the Dolphins were dominating, the crowd was dead,
01:00:04New England's offense was dead.
01:00:06Fourth and two on the Dolphin around the 30-yard line.
01:00:10They called timeout.
01:00:11Raymond Berry goes for a first down on fourth and two
01:00:16with a big play.
01:00:17And they said earlier in the season he was too conservative.
01:00:20That is what turned this ball game around.
01:00:22That was the touchdown pass to Hawthorne.
01:00:25Here's James.
01:00:26James over 100 yards today.
01:00:2918 carries now for about 108 yards.
01:00:35Brudzinski, 59.
01:00:37Chip, 50, on the tackle.
01:00:40There's the rushing yardage,
01:00:42and James with a big portion of that for the Patriots
01:00:47near the 110-yard mark.
01:00:52Timeout with 2.16 remaining to be played in this game.
01:00:59You know, talking about Raymond Berry,
01:01:01I was talking to him the other day,
01:01:02and I asked him about his defense, and he says,
01:01:04he says, I don't really know anything about the defense.
01:01:06You'll have to talk to Rod Russ.
01:01:08I said, well, what about the offense?
01:01:09He says, well, I'd let Steve Grogan call the plays now.
01:01:12He's doing what I wanted to do, but only better.
01:01:15He says, my philosophy is a good mixture of run and pass.
01:01:19And he said, at the end of the game,
01:01:21I want no bullets left in the chamber.
01:01:23And that's a great philosophy.
01:01:24Go out and give it your best, and if it's not good enough,
01:01:27at least you fired all your rounds.
01:01:29NFL league rules require we present away games
01:01:32starting with the opening kickoff,
01:01:34and that, of course, to the stations in the team's home area.
01:01:38So, you viewers in Denver, you'll be leaving this game
01:01:41in just a few moments for a telecast involving your home team.
01:01:44Of course, we'll continue to bring you reports on this game
01:01:47and keep you right up to date.
01:01:49Don Shula, the Dolphins head man,
01:01:53his team down 17 to 13 with just 216 remaining.
01:01:57It's the first Patriot 100-yard game of 85,
01:02:02and it goes to Craig James,
01:02:05who had come so close before this season.
01:02:08On two occasions, he'd had 96 yards last week,
01:02:1198 yards against the Packers.
01:02:14Officially now, he has 108 yards on 18 carries.
01:02:19And as we talked very early on, he wanted the football.
01:02:22The young man from SMU, he said, give me the football.
01:02:24We'll get it done.
01:02:25A couple weeks ago, he went in and talked to Raymond Berry
01:02:28and says, I want to carry the ball 20 or 30 times a game.
01:02:31He's not getting the 30, but he's getting the ball
01:02:33running and receiving at least 20 times, and he's producing.
01:02:37Second down in the long four.
01:02:40The Patriots leading 17 to 13.
01:02:49That was Craig James tacking on to his big total today
01:02:53as Shipp made the tackle at the 45-yard line.
01:02:57First final of the day, Minnesota.
01:03:00Doug Grant's bunch defeats Detroit 16 to 13.
01:03:04The two-minute warning here,
01:03:06and they are a happy bunch in Foxboro.
01:03:09We'll be back with more in a moment.
01:03:12Alcoa presents Fantastic Finishes.
01:03:161984, one second left in the Bengals trail the Browns by seven.
01:03:20As Boomer Esiason takes the snap, he fakes right and moves right.
01:03:24What's this?
01:03:25It's the old tackle-eligible pass to the 280-pound Anthony Munoz.
01:03:29In overtime moments later, out of the mud of Municipal Stadium,
01:03:33Jim Breach boots a perfect 36-yard field goal
01:03:36to sink the Browns 20 to 17.
01:03:40Glad we could get together.
01:03:43Oh, but we better hurry. Can't miss the concert.
01:03:45Right.
01:03:48Oh, no.
01:03:50The Patriots, over the past two seasons,
01:03:528-13 in games decided by seven points or less,
01:03:57and these Patriots showed patience and then resiliency
01:04:01as they came back to win this one this afternoon.
01:04:04If, in fact, they do win it, we still have two minutes to play.
01:04:08We talked about it in the opening, Jay, with Steve Grogan,
01:04:11how he has come back, and after not playing for 18 games,
01:04:14he has become more patient, and he feels like he has a team around him,
01:04:19and certainly he did not play well in the first half
01:04:21as he threw three interceptions, as we see the scores here.
01:04:24Three interceptions in the first half.
01:04:26He's come back and has thrown the ball well enough,
01:04:29but he's called the right plays at the right time.
01:04:31He's moved his players around and has gotten his team back on top.
01:04:36Patriots would like very much to get the first down
01:04:39and keep the ball here. Third down and one.
01:04:46And the pitch coming to James, and he doesn't get it.
01:04:51A big play over there by Mark Brown, number 51,
01:04:54the right inside linebacker,
01:04:57and let's go to Bob Costas right now for an update to NFL 85.
01:05:05Jay, the Browns' agony in Pittsburgh continues.
01:05:08Eleven seconds remaining. Gary Anderson hits from 25 yards out.
01:05:12Pittsburgh pulls the game out 10 to 9.
01:05:15Last year in Pittsburgh, Anderson kicked a field goal
01:05:17with five seconds left to beat the Browns.
01:05:22And Bob Costas, Ahmad Rashad, and all the crew
01:05:24will be keeping you up to date throughout the afternoon,
01:05:27as, of course, this is a doubleheader day for us at NBC.
01:05:31NFL action will be continuing.
01:05:36Clock shows 1.45 remaining.
01:05:39Down on the sideline now Don Shula
01:05:42in a conversation with one of the officials.
01:05:47There's Marino talking things over with his head man.
01:05:53They still have a life, Bob.
01:05:55They sure do, and what better man to try it than Dan Marino.
01:05:58And, you know, he is really doing it with only half of his weapons.
01:06:03By that I mean Mark Dupre is not playing net more.
01:06:06The fine wide receiver, the veteran who has come on
01:06:09and taken up a lot of slack for Dupre,
01:06:12has been a role player when Dupre was in there,
01:06:16so Marino really only has Mark Clayton and Tony Nathan.
01:06:21And he's had to go to Clayton when he's needed the big play,
01:06:24and that's no secret to the Patriots.
01:06:26That's exactly right, but still they've covered him
01:06:29pretty much the way they did with man-to-man coverage,
01:06:33one-on-one, haven't double-covered him a whole lot,
01:06:36but Marino has tried to go to him,
01:06:38but he needs to go to his tight ends, too.
01:06:40I think this next series his tight ends may be open.
01:06:43Rich Camarillo to punt to Vigarito.
01:06:48Vigarito returned one for 23 yards.
01:06:52Oh, a high pass. He got it away.
01:06:55Wobbly kick. Vigarito lets it go.
01:07:00And Miami will have it at their own 18-yard line.
01:07:04And we have 142 remaining, a 31-yard punt by Camarillo.
01:07:10Ed Williams was downfield for the Patriots.
01:07:16Back out on the field.
01:07:19Number 13, Danny Marino.
01:07:24One timeout, minute 42 seconds.
01:07:28Most NFL teams work on the two-minute drill
01:07:31two or three times a week.
01:07:33Marino has been very successful in the past,
01:07:35but again, how many times can you ask him to bring him back?
01:07:39Very few people have left this stadium.
01:07:42They want to see this one to conclusion.
01:07:45Marino throwing and incomplete.
01:07:48At the 33-yard line,
01:07:51Rod McSwain had the coverage against Mark Clayton.
01:07:56Clayton had actually caught the pass,
01:07:58and McSwain knocked it out of his hands,
01:08:00as again we see this same coverage,
01:08:02man-to-man coverage, with some help deep.
01:08:05Clayton jumps to get the football,
01:08:08and McSwain stays with it and knocks it loose.
01:08:11McSwain has been around that ball today, the nickelback.
01:08:15He certainly has, good and bad.
01:08:29Marino throwing, intercepted!
01:08:32It was Clayton who had it and lost it.
01:08:36And coming up with it is Roland James.
01:08:40That ball was in Clayton's hands.
01:08:43As it popped out, there was Roland James.
01:08:55We've got a marvelous replay of this.
01:08:58Dick Kline and his crew, here it is.
01:09:01Marino with plenty of time to throw,
01:09:04Clayton just comes back for the football,
01:09:06I think he juggles it, the ball is up in the air,
01:09:09and James, right there, close by,
01:09:12makes the interception a big play for James.
01:09:15McSwain looked like he might have had a little bit to do with it,
01:09:17with a hit in the back there.
01:09:19Tight coverage, Clayton could hold on to it,
01:09:22but that's the problem when you lose a Mark Duper and a Nat Moore.
01:09:27He has to go to Clayton over and over,
01:09:30and we're going to have some problems.
01:09:33Craig James, inside the 25-yard line.
01:09:38Clock running, 1.20 to play.
01:09:40Pickup of five.
01:09:42Boyer, 54. Little, 99 on the tackle.
01:09:46Last time out for Miami.
01:09:48We'll be back in just a moment.
01:09:53I bought the Volkswagen Golf Sports German-engineered handling and performance.
01:09:58That's funny. I bought the Golf Sports durability.
01:10:05James keeps tacking on to his big day.
01:10:08Picked up four.
01:10:15Don Shula, the giveaway-takeaway situation from a year ago,
01:10:20a problem for the Dolphins.
01:10:22The 16 differential went from plus 11 last year to minus 5,
01:10:27and he has said you just can't win playing football like that.
01:10:34There's Billy Sullivan.
01:10:38Of course, there's a lot of talk about the sale of this team,
01:10:42but he's got to be a very happy man this afternoon.
01:10:48There he is, Billy.
01:10:52Yes, indeed. Big day.
01:10:59Patriots have had a big day on the ground.
01:11:01They control this football today.
01:11:03One of the keys for them.
01:11:06Craig James again.
01:11:08James now over 120 yards.
01:11:11Stop made by Mark Brown.
01:11:13Cincinnati defeats Buffalo.
01:11:17Washington romps over Atlanta.
01:11:21And this one is over here.
01:11:24They have 18 seconds left on the clock,
01:11:27but what a very big win for these Patriots.
01:11:35The celebration for this big crowd here in Foxboro.
01:11:41And Raymond Berry is now 8-0 in his young head coaching career
01:11:46against the AFC East.
01:11:50New England 17, Miami 13.
01:11:54Here in the mist, a magnificent victory for the Patriots.
01:11:59The final again.
01:12:00Pats 17, Dolphins 13.
01:12:03We'll be back to talk.
