00:00:00Here's Tony Franklin kicking off.
00:00:02Split kick, you can hear him hollering, let it go.
00:00:05But the ball is fumbled around by the Packers,
00:00:08and it is downed at the 18-yard line,
00:00:12downed there by Gary Ellerson.
00:00:16So four seconds left to go in the first half.
00:00:20And it has been a most forgettable first half for the Packers,
00:00:24and a very pleasant one as far as the Patriots are concerned.
00:00:28Here's a play that set it up.
00:00:30Watch this ball, the defensive back right there,
00:00:32Ronnie Burgess, 39, falls,
00:00:34or he might have had a shot at the ball
00:00:36because it was thrown a little bit behind.
00:00:38It's those kinds of breaks that can kill a team
00:00:41and put more gray hairs on the head of Forrest Gray.
00:00:47The season opener for both clubs,
00:00:49and our second half is underway.
00:00:53And the sign at the goal line.
00:00:59He gets back to about the 20-yard line,
00:01:01and that's where the Patriots will take over,
00:01:03first and 10, tackle that was made by John Anderson.
00:01:06Tempo all-important on his first drive in the second half.
00:01:09Will the Packers have to come out of the locker room?
00:01:11I imagine Forrest Gray had a few things to say to them in the locker room,
00:01:15allowing that last second touchdown to put them down 19-6.
00:01:19I'd say he had a few angry words saying,
00:01:22gentlemen, you better get out there and do it.
00:01:24There may be some new faces around here.
00:01:27A few heated words, and that locker room is really steamy right now.
00:01:31Let's see if it's a carryover onto the defensive unit.
00:01:35Inside handoff is Greg James.
00:01:38First contact is made by Randy Scott.
00:01:41And you played for Forrest Gray in Cleveland.
00:01:44You know what kind of inspirational talk he can give.
00:01:47Forrest is the kind of guy who will intimidate you.
00:01:50I mean, he's just that kind of person,
00:01:52and you really start to believe him,
00:01:54and he likes that fear factor, I believe.
00:01:56And I think it's a direct carryover
00:01:58from his days when he played for Vince Lombardi.
00:02:03Certainly Vince would get your attention.
00:02:05Let's see if Forrest got his players' attention at halftime.
00:02:08Second and 13.
00:02:12Decent. Down the middle.
00:02:14Pass was intended for Lynn Dawson.
00:02:17Tom Flynn was over-recovering,
00:02:20so apparently Tom Flynn is okay.
00:02:22You remember he left the ballgame early in the first half
00:02:26with some kind of shoulder injury, but now he's back.
00:02:29And Flynn's one of the guys that have picked up the Packer defense.
00:02:32You remember a couple of years ago,
00:02:34they were the laughingstock of the NFL,
00:02:36the worst team in defense in the league.
00:02:38Last year, they were the 16th team,
00:02:40so they were moving up, and Greg expected some improvement,
00:02:43and Flynn is one of the guys that will do it.
00:02:46Will do it.
00:02:47Flynn was the Defensive Rookie of the Year last season.
00:02:49Packers now have five defensive backs in.
00:02:52New England from the shotgun.
00:02:57Pass across the middle.
00:02:59Once again, it is complete.
00:03:01Derwin Williams.
00:03:03Good pass protection by the Patriots.
00:03:06And Mark Murphy's in on the tackle.
00:03:08I was just about to say,
00:03:10Tony Easton not only has a strong arm, he has good touch.
00:03:12The shotgun gives him a little extra time to see downfield.
00:03:15He has time.
00:03:16Good pickup by the offensive line.
00:03:18The ball is perfectly thrown.
00:03:19The receiver goes up and protects it
00:03:21from the defensive backs with his body.
00:03:23Completion.
00:03:24Williams now four receptions for 85 yards.
00:03:30First and ten ball at the 35.
00:03:36Hand it off to Tony Collins.
00:03:38He doesn't quite get back to the 35-yard line.
00:03:41Tackle made by Guy Prager.
00:03:46Take a look at it again.
00:03:47Prager comes in.
00:03:48He's on the blitz, so he has a little leeway.
00:03:50Takes on the blocker and still makes the tackle.
00:03:52Outstanding play.
00:03:54In a 3-4, that outside linebacker is often coming on the blitz.
00:03:57That time, great penetration to make the play.
00:04:06Here's a handoff to Collins.
00:04:09Getting to the outside.
00:04:11Finally tackled this time.
00:04:14Finally tackled there by Mark Murphy.
00:04:19The Packers still in the second half.
00:04:22A little sluggish as far as their defensive effort is concerned.
00:04:25And there is an injured Packer on the field.
00:04:28There's Murphy coming back with his head down.
00:04:31But there is an injured Packer on the field.
00:04:34That's George Comby.
00:04:35Yes, George Comby, inside linebacker.
00:04:38Down and, of course, we lost Mike Douglas earlier.
00:04:42You see the man standing over him, number 91.
00:04:45He's a fifth-round draft choice.
00:04:47A rookie out of Arizona State.
00:04:49They're really high on Brian Noble.
00:04:51He's bigger, he's stronger, and he's been fighting Comby.
00:04:54The Packers have five defensive backs in.
00:04:57Lonnie Burgess checks in for Green Bay.
00:04:59New England from the shotgun.
00:05:03Across the middle again.
00:05:04Eason connects with Craig James.
00:05:08Tackle made by John Anderson.
00:05:11Also Mark Murphy in on the tackle.
00:05:13That pass play good for 15 yards.
00:05:15And it is amazing how Eason has continually, this afternoon,
00:05:18completed that pass across the middle.
00:05:20If you take a look at number 37, you might see him fall on his play.
00:05:23He might have helped Murphy.
00:05:24See him on the left side of your screen?
00:05:26Murphy's covering.
00:05:27Now, right here, you see him come late into your screen, Mark Murphy.
00:05:30Had he been able to hold his footing, he might have been able to help out Anderson
00:05:34trying to cover James out in the backfield.
00:05:36Another yardage for the first down.
00:05:41The toss back to Tony Collins.
00:05:45Collins tackled by Guy Prather and Tim Lewis.
00:05:52And there's another injured Packer on the field.
00:05:56Looks like Charles Martin is slow getting up.
00:06:00Charlie Martin, the second-year man from Livingston,
00:06:02who was replacing Terry Jones, who ruptured his Achilles tendon
00:06:06in the first day of training camp.
00:06:07So, right from day one, it's been a tough period of time for the Packers.
00:06:10And Forrest Gregg was talking about Charlie Martin.
00:06:12He said, he's the best player I've coached in my career, almost.
00:06:16I can't get him off the field.
00:06:18He wants to play every down, be a starter, play every special team.
00:06:21I'd like to have 45 players just like this man, Martin,
00:06:24and we'd be a good football team.
00:06:27And he brought a smile to Forrest Gregg's face when we started talking about Martin.
00:06:31But the Packers haven't been smiling this afternoon.
00:06:35They trail 19-6.
00:06:37Here's Tony Eason.
00:06:38The blitz is on, but he gets a pass off anyway.
00:06:40And it is complete.
00:06:41Pass is complete to Collins again.
00:06:44John Anderson making the tackle.
00:06:46And again, the mismatch.
00:06:47Okay, Anderson trying to cover Collins.
00:06:49All Collins did was come out of the backfield,
00:06:51leaned inside, faked inside on Anderson,
00:06:54and then went to the outside.
00:06:55Eason waited. He had the time, completed the pass.
00:06:59Eason is now 16-21 for 193 yards.
00:07:04Not a bad afternoon.
00:07:05Not at all.
00:07:06Particularly where he is using his running backs so effectively.
00:07:12Hurston 10, ball at the 30-yard line of Green Bay.
00:07:16Satupu and Robert Weathers in the backfield for the Patriots.
00:07:19And Satupu gets the call.
00:07:22Satupu gets inside the 30-yard line
00:07:24before he's tackled by George Cumby and he's battered again.
00:07:28So Cumby gets back into the ballgame.
00:07:30You mentioned the pressure that was on George Cumby to keep his job.
00:07:34He came out of the ballgame with an injury and now he's right back in it.
00:07:36As a matter of fact, some people thought that Brian Noble,
00:07:39the rookie out of Arizona State, might start today
00:07:41because he's one of Forrest's big people.
00:07:44Forrest believes in bulk.
00:07:45The gospel according to Forrest is bulk is beautiful.
00:07:49And Noble is about 20 pounds heavier than Cumby at linebacker.
00:07:53Well, that's the trend around the National Football League
00:07:55the last four or five years.
00:07:56Big linebackers.
00:07:58The Patriots trying to come up with another big play
00:08:00and a linebacker makes a great interception.
00:08:02And a linebacker makes a great interception.
00:08:03Randy Scott.
00:08:09Randy Scott making the interception for Green Bay.
00:08:12Knocked out of bounds by Brian Holloway.
00:08:14And Easton is a man who does not throw many interceptions.
00:08:17He's a high percentage passer.
00:08:19He only threw eight in all of 1984.
00:08:21Take a look at him right here.
00:08:23He does not see Scott.
00:08:24See from the right side.
00:08:25See Scott there.
00:08:26He's got his tight end hooking.
00:08:27Scott comes.
00:08:28He waits.
00:08:29He's a little bit late.
00:08:30Scott jumps in front of Ramsey for the interception.
00:08:33Big play.
00:08:34Green Bay needed that.
00:08:36Well, Lynn Dickey now takes his Packers on the field.
00:08:38First and 10.
00:08:39From that 45-yard line.
00:08:46Hand off to Jesse Clark.
00:08:47Oh! He's hit by Don Blackman.
00:08:54We are seeing some very good linebacker play
00:08:57by both clubs in this ballgame.
00:08:59Well, that's the strength of both clubs.
00:09:01Neither club has an outstanding defensive line or pass rush.
00:09:05They rely on their linebackers to solidify that defense.
00:09:08Both average in the secondary.
00:09:10So if the linebackers don't do it for both clubs,
00:09:12then they're in trouble defensively.
00:09:14Wonder when we're going to see some more of James Lawson.
00:09:17Yes. James has been very quiet today.
00:09:19Philip Epps.
00:09:20Philip Epps.
00:09:21What about Kaufman?
00:09:26Here's Dickey.
00:09:27He goes for Philip Epps.
00:09:28And the ball is a little low.
00:09:29Incomplete coverage there by Steve Nelson.
00:09:31And there is a flag on the play.
00:09:33I was just about to say,
00:09:34Dickey is not setting up.
00:09:35He's not setting his feet.
00:09:36He's edgy.
00:09:37He's throwing off balance.
00:09:38He's throwing too quickly.
00:09:39He's just not in the rhythm of his game.
00:09:44I remembered when we saw him yesterday and talked to him.
00:09:46As soon as he walked in the room,
00:09:48I got the impression that, you know...
00:09:49Number 70.
00:09:51Offense.
00:09:53Still second down.
00:09:54It's Keith Euchre,
00:09:55who the penalty was called against.
00:09:57I got the impression that
00:09:58Lind really wasn't feeling that well.
00:10:00He wasn't feeling that well.
00:10:01He looked like he was in pain.
00:10:02Of course, he was hurt last week.
00:10:04He got a lot of pressure from the Jets early.
00:10:06Here he gets pressure again.
00:10:07But you see him.
00:10:08He's a little bit gun-shy.
00:10:09He turns that shoulder.
00:10:10Gets rid of it too soon.
00:10:12I'm watching Dickey where he's held that ball
00:10:14for the last moment.
00:10:15Maybe for one second longer than he did there.
00:10:17And he'll take the hit.
00:10:19So it is second and 19 for Green Bay.
00:10:22The ball up there at 36.
00:10:30There's a handoff to Ellis.
00:10:33And he's smothered at the line of friends.
00:10:39Kenneth Simms and Andre Tippett,
00:10:41the first two Patriots to get to him.
00:10:43And remember what Dickey said yesterday.
00:10:45All this pressure is coming from the Patriots' defense.
00:10:47And all this pressure is coming from the Patriots' defense
00:10:49because they know the Packers do not have a running game.
00:10:52Remember what Lynn said to us yesterday.
00:10:54He said, goodness, if I could only get 85 or 95 yards
00:10:57from one of my running backs,
00:10:59it would take the heat off our passing game.
00:11:01He's not getting it this afternoon.
00:11:04And as a result, their passing game has been ineffective.
00:11:09Preston Donaruk checks in for Green Bay.
00:11:11That gives them three wide receivers.
00:11:18Fuck!
00:11:19Watch out!
00:11:23That's Andre Tippett who comes in
00:11:25and really blasts Lynn Dickey.
00:11:27Is Dickey all right is my question.
00:11:29Oh, he took a hit from the back side.
00:11:31It looked like they were offside and Dickey was slowing down.
00:11:34I don't know where the whistle was,
00:11:35but Dickey, I think, thought there was a penalty
00:11:37that would have stopped the play.
00:11:39Obviously, Tippett didn't believe it.
00:11:41Take a look at it again, folks.
00:11:43Watch the left side of your screen.
00:11:45Number 56.
00:11:47Coming from wide from the outside,
00:11:48throws a little fake.
00:11:49He gets right around Ellis.
00:11:50Dickey never saw him.
00:11:51Takes a hit right up beside the head.
00:11:54Oof, down he goes.
00:11:56Andre Tippett, his third sack of the day.
00:12:02And Dickey's neck and his back and his vertebrae.
00:12:06I think the man's hurt.
00:12:07I really believe he is hurt.
00:12:10And he's too proud an individual to say so.
00:12:13Joe Prokop in to punt for Greenway.
00:12:15The ball lands at the 39 and takes a Packer bounce.
00:12:19Goes out of bounds.
00:12:20The yard line leading the Packers 19-6.
00:12:30Hand off to James.
00:12:32James gets across the 25 up to about the 28-yard line
00:12:35before he's tackled by Guy Prather again.
00:12:38It's interesting.
00:12:39Craig James, of course, he was a halfback.
00:12:41When Raymond Berry told him,
00:12:42look, you're going to be a fullback,
00:12:44well, he didn't particularly like it.
00:12:45He said, no, I got to get the ball.
00:12:47I'm used to getting it.
00:12:48And then Berry explained the offense to him.
00:12:50He said, you know, it's much like San Francisco
00:12:53where you won't be doing any heavy-duty inside running
00:12:55and blocking, but rather you'll be like another halfback.
00:12:58Berry now is trying to quiet the crowd down from the wave.
00:13:01That can be very distracting,
00:13:02and it can really hurt your own ballplay.
00:13:05Hand off to Collins.
00:13:06Across the 30 up to about the 31-32-yard line
00:13:09is George Cumbia on the tackle.
00:13:16That's one of the things that, you know,
00:13:18this wave that's been around for the last couple of years,
00:13:22home teams really are starting to try
00:13:25and keep the crowds from doing that
00:13:27because they have a tendency to do that
00:13:28when the home team has the ball.
00:13:30Wave when the other team has the ball.
00:13:32Tony Collins, 10 for 50, one touchdown.
00:13:48Short yardage now for the Patriots.
00:13:50That means mostly Tutupu in the lineup.
00:13:54Hand off goes to number 24, Robert Withers.
00:13:58Withers going behind the line.
00:14:01Withers going behind the blocking of Tutupu.
00:14:03And that's just what I said,
00:14:04that Craig James didn't have to take on the heavy load
00:14:08of your traditional big fullback,
00:14:10but rather they have Tutupu to lead a guy like Withers
00:14:13for the first down.
00:14:14And there are a lot of people who wonder
00:14:15why Tutupu isn't in the starting lineup more
00:14:18so that you can have Craig James and Tony Collins
00:14:21running behind Tutupu.
00:14:23Well, I think Raymond Berry's using him the way he should.
00:14:26Tutupu and the line are strong.
00:14:27Tutupu leads the way.
00:14:28See him right there with the hit.
00:14:29That allows Withers, number 30 with the hit
00:14:31to get the first down.
00:14:38Once again, bursting up through the middle
00:14:39of the line of scrimmage.
00:14:41That's Craig James.
00:14:42You know, I think a smart coach finds the attributes
00:14:45of each of his players
00:14:46and gets them involved in the game somehow.
00:14:48And that's what Raymond Berry is doing.
00:14:50He has four backs playing.
00:14:51He has Collins and James starting doing what they do well,
00:14:54run the ball and catch it out of the backfield.
00:14:56He has Tutupu and Withers coming behind him
00:14:58to batter away at a tiring Green Bay defense.
00:15:02Five minutes and 25 seconds left to go in the third quarter.
00:15:11Here's Eason back to pass.
00:15:12The blitz is on, but it's picked up.
00:15:15There's a flag on the plate
00:15:16as a pass was intended for Cedric Jones.
00:15:20The Patriots, you know, the last few days,
00:15:22all we've been hearing about
00:15:23is the ineffectiveness of their offensive line.
00:15:26Defensive pass interference, number 43, first down.
00:15:31Darryl Jones is the person for Green Bay
00:15:34that the penalty was called against,
00:15:35but we're seeing this afternoon
00:15:36how the Patriots' line has done a great job.
00:15:38And this is not, this is Mark Lee covering here,
00:15:40and they said the penalty was not on him,
00:15:42although Lee had pretty good coverage.
00:15:44He was actually there two times.
00:15:46And that can happen to a defensive back.
00:15:47Your coverage is too good, you're there too soon,
00:15:49and you bump the receiver.
00:15:53So we saw Mark Lee
00:15:55when the official called Darryl Jones.
00:15:59But whatever the situation,
00:16:00it was the first down now for New England.
00:16:03Play-action pass.
00:16:06Eason's had plenty of time.
00:16:08Now he throws back across the field.
00:16:10Pass is complete as Cedric Jones
00:16:12And there is Darryl Jones making the tackle.
00:16:15And you're watching the growth of a quarterback,
00:16:17the maturing of Tony Eason.
00:16:19He wanted Irvin Fryer deep down on the post.
00:16:22They had double coverage,
00:16:23they had him covered in the middle.
00:16:24He pulls it down, finds a secondary receiver,
00:16:27and picks up a few yards.
00:16:30I guess one of the ways you can tell about his maturity
00:16:32is you can watch him look from one side to the other
00:16:35and see what he's doing.
00:16:36He's got a lot of power,
00:16:37he's got a lot of speed,
00:16:38he's got a lot of power,
00:16:39he's got a lot of speed,
00:16:40you can watch him look from one side of the field to the other.
00:16:43Exactly, that's what he's doing.
00:16:45That's what the good quarterbacks do
00:16:46after they're in the league for a few years.
00:16:48Four and a half minutes left to go in the third period.
00:16:58Another flag on the play.
00:17:01Eason completing the pass,
00:17:03this time to Derek Ramsey.
00:17:07The preliminary call is against New England.
00:17:10The game is on.
00:17:28Number 61 is Ron Wooten from North Carolina.
00:17:31Wooten, incidentally, was quoted in the papers as saying,
00:17:34forget about what we did in the preseason,
00:17:36our running game will come around during the regular season
00:17:39and it will start in the Packer game.
00:17:42And he's right, both teams, of course,
00:17:43one and three in the preseason,
00:17:45trying to throw out that record and get a victory
00:17:47here in the first game of the year.
00:17:50Penalties, Green Bay two for 23,
00:17:52New England having their problems,
00:17:53seven for 46 yards.
00:18:01Here's Eason back to pass.
00:18:04Great protection,
00:18:05almost intercepted that time by Mark Lee.
00:18:10The pass was intended for Irving Fryer,
00:18:12but it was a little low and Mark Lee,
00:18:15in good anticipation,
00:18:16should have come up with the interception.
00:18:18No doubt about it.
00:18:19He gambled a little bit, Mark Lee did,
00:18:20because he had help deep behind him.
00:18:23He was covering Irving Fryer,
00:18:24he jumped underneath because he knew he had help deep.
00:18:27But there was no pressure on the quarterback.
00:18:29Eason had plenty of time to look for receivers.
00:18:33The Packers in their nickelback situation.
00:18:39And New England has three wide receivers in.
00:18:45On third and 13th.
00:18:54Eason scrambling around,
00:18:55and he has some running room.
00:18:57Caught from behind by Ezra Johnson.
00:19:04So that particular time,
00:19:06he's kind of thinking about the new rule,
00:19:08how when a quarterback starts running around
00:19:10and he slides in first,
00:19:11he automatically down.
00:19:12I don't think he really thought
00:19:13that Ezra Johnson was that close behind him.
00:19:15He never saw Ezra Johnson.
00:19:16Good pursuit by the big man.
00:19:21But it is not enough yardage for the first down.
00:19:24So Rich Camarillo comes in to punt for New England.
00:19:28Walt Stanley is back to receive for Green Bay
00:19:31at the Packer 10-yard line.
00:19:38Camarillo with a far sideline.
00:19:44And it will be ruled a touchback.
00:19:47And the Packers is just back,
00:19:48so a little bit rusty.
00:19:50Said he is not exactly 100% happy to be back,
00:19:53but it was a question of mutual need.
00:19:56And the Packers certainly need some better efforts
00:19:58out of not only Cook,
00:19:59but the rest of their squad this afternoon.
00:20:01Here's a draw play to Ellis.
00:20:03Ellis to about the 26-yard line,
00:20:05and he's tackled there by Larry McGrew.
00:20:09You know, Cook came back.
00:20:10He said he really, you know,
00:20:11wanted, he left camp because he was unhappy.
00:20:13He said he didn't like the way he was being treated.
00:20:15He wasn't being treated like a man.
00:20:17And it had something to do
00:20:18with his relationship with Jerry Wampler.
00:20:20But boy, he knew if he didn't come back,
00:20:22he might be put on a list
00:20:23where he couldn't play all year.
00:20:24He knew the Packers needed him.
00:20:25So together, they said,
00:20:26look, you need me, I need you.
00:20:27So, you know,
00:20:28you need me, I need you.
00:20:29So, you know,
00:20:30you need me, I need you.
00:20:31So, together, they said,
00:20:32look, you need me, I need you.
00:20:33So, I'll come back and we'll see what happens.
00:20:35You also heard about the pending trade to Cleveland.
00:20:37Exactly.
00:20:39Here's Jesse Clark.
00:20:42Clark to about the 27-yard line.
00:20:44Steve Nelson on the tackle.
00:20:45You know what I thought was terrific, though,
00:20:47in talking to Greg Cook,
00:20:48and so honest and an intelligent man.
00:20:50I saw his eyes kind of fill up a little bit
00:20:52when he talked about coming back
00:20:54and talking to Forrest Gregg,
00:20:55who is a tough guy to talk to
00:20:57after you've walked out
00:20:58and had some tough words with.
00:20:59He said, at the end of our conversation
00:21:00when I come back,
00:21:01Forrest Gregg walked around the table
00:21:03and hugged me and said,
00:21:04welcome back, you big brute.
00:21:06I'm glad to have you.
00:21:07Man to man.
00:21:12That's a very special relationship.
00:21:17But so far this afternoon,
00:21:18no hugs from the Packer players.
00:21:21Here's Dickey back to pass.
00:21:24Almost in a second,
00:21:25the pass was intended for Jesse Clark
00:21:27and that was Roland James.
00:21:30Well, Jesse Clark made a good play
00:21:32to prevent Roland James
00:21:33from intercepting that ball.
00:21:34The problem was,
00:21:35Cook, Coffman,
00:21:39was too close
00:21:40and Roland James,
00:21:41see the ball was thrown behind,
00:21:42he'd thrown it over the outside,
00:21:43but you see Coffman inside,
00:21:45two receivers too close to one another
00:21:46in the same area.
00:21:47Only 21 yards of rushing so far
00:21:50for the Packers,
00:21:51107 for New England.
00:21:53Do you think they need
00:21:54Eddie Lee Ivory back?
00:21:56In the worst way.
00:22:00That's Irving Fryer
00:22:01back to receive on the punt
00:22:02from Joe Prokop of Green Bay.
00:22:13Irving Fryer back
00:22:14to about the 13-yard line.
00:22:18Irving Fryer gets up
00:22:19to the 25-yard line,
00:22:20where he's tackled
00:22:21there by Gary Hayes.
00:22:23That punt good for 58 yards.
00:22:30Tony Eason having a good
00:22:33first game of the regular season.
00:22:37A handoff for Tony Collins,
00:22:38jitterbugging at the line of scrimmage,
00:22:40getting up and he's just short
00:22:41of the 30-yard line,
00:22:42George Cumbie making the tackle.
00:22:43You know, Tony Collins
00:22:44is one of those runners
00:22:45with speed and quickness,
00:22:46hard, he's elusive,
00:22:47he's like, you know,
00:22:48Walter Payton or Freeman McNeil
00:22:50or Marcus Allen,
00:22:51hard to get that clean shot at,
00:22:53and there he just sidestepped,
00:22:54you saw him slide through the hole
00:22:56and pick up a few yards
00:22:57when he probably should have
00:22:58gotten zero.
00:23:00Those are the natural instincts
00:23:02that you really cannot teach
00:23:04a running back.
00:23:05You're born with them,
00:23:06born to run.
00:23:08Pick up a four yards,
00:23:10make second and six.
00:23:16Good protection for Eason,
00:23:18through, complete to Collins.
00:23:24Once again, that natural instinct
00:23:27that we talked about,
00:23:28born to run.
00:23:29And balance,
00:23:30ability to catch the ball.
00:23:31I mean, Tony talking to him
00:23:32in the locker room,
00:23:33his eyes just lit up
00:23:34when I said,
00:23:35Tony, what kind of a year
00:23:36are you going to have?
00:23:37He said, you know what,
00:23:38I am so happy to be
00:23:39in the two-back offense
00:23:40and part of this team again.
00:23:42I'm just so excited,
00:23:43I can't wait to get my hands
00:23:44on the ball,
00:23:45either running it or catching it
00:23:46out of the backfield,
00:23:47and Tony's doing it
00:23:48this afternoon.
00:23:50And the extra effort
00:23:53gives the Patriots
00:23:54a first down.
00:23:5617 seconds left
00:23:57to go in the third period.
00:24:02The pitch back,
00:24:04Robert Weathers.
00:24:06Weathers bumped out of bounds
00:24:07at the 42-yard line
00:24:08by George Cumby.
00:24:12Six seconds left
00:24:13to go in the third period.
00:24:16The Patriots are using
00:24:17a lot of people,
00:24:18both on offense and defense,
00:24:19particularly at the
00:24:20skill positions.
00:24:22I think that brings the team
00:24:23closer together
00:24:24and everyone can contribute
00:24:25something.
00:24:26And besides,
00:24:27in a very practical way,
00:24:28on a hot afternoon
00:24:29like it is today here,
00:24:30temperature close to
00:24:31100 degrees on the turf,
00:24:33you get fresh people in there
00:24:34and that's what Raymond Berry
00:24:35wants to do.
00:24:39Second and nine,
00:24:40and this should be
00:24:41the last play of the third quarter.
00:24:48The blitz is on.
00:24:50And Eason is set.
00:24:51Charles Martin putting
00:24:52on the pressure
00:24:53and Guy Pratt are also in there.
00:24:58And I was amazed last year,
00:24:59the biggest problem
00:25:00New England had
00:25:01was stopping the blitz.
00:25:02He was sacked 30 times
00:25:03in the last four games.
00:25:04Take a look at it
00:25:05from ground level here.
00:25:06It's just delayed blitz.
00:25:10The Patriots
00:25:12and Tony Eason
00:25:13back to pass.
00:25:15Good protection
00:25:16across the middle
00:25:17and it is complete.
00:25:18This time complete
00:25:19to Derek Ramsey.
00:25:21Ramsey gets up
00:25:22to the 45-yard line
00:25:23before he's down
00:25:24by John Anderson.
00:25:26And now it's just a point
00:25:27of New England
00:25:29taking whatever
00:25:30Green Bay gives them.
00:25:35So with that,
00:25:36it will be fourth down.
00:25:41In which Camarillo
00:25:42into punt for New England.
00:25:45Walter Stanley
00:25:46will be back to receive
00:25:47for the Packers
00:25:48at about his 10-yard line.
00:25:52Time of possession
00:25:53so far this afternoon, John.
00:25:54The Packers only 15 minutes
00:25:55and 45 seconds.
00:25:56New England 29 minutes
00:25:58and 15 seconds.
00:26:00That can be deceiving
00:26:01because the Packers
00:26:02have big strike power
00:26:03and they can get it done
00:26:04in a hurry.
00:26:07But they haven't this afternoon.
00:26:12Here's Stanley
00:26:13at the 11-yard line.
00:26:17And he gets back
00:26:18to the 20-yard line
00:26:19where he's tackled
00:26:20by Rod McSwing.
00:26:23Now, coming up next,
00:26:24U.S. Open Tennis Championships
00:26:26in the Men's Singles Final.
00:26:27Second seed,
00:26:28Yvonne Lindell
00:26:29against top seed,
00:26:30John McEnroe.
00:26:31And what a match that should be.
00:26:32Of course, McEnroe,
00:26:33when I watch him,
00:26:34I sense he's a man
00:26:35with a mission.
00:26:36Like he was angry
00:26:37after losing Wimbledon
00:26:38in the French Open
00:26:39and that he has something
00:26:40to prove here in the U.S. Open.
00:26:41What a match it should be.
00:26:42Lindell McEnroe.
00:26:44Meanwhile, Ed Reynolds
00:26:45is the injured
00:26:46New England Patriot
00:26:47on the field.
00:26:51Whistles are blowing
00:26:52before the play can get off.
00:26:56As Andre Tippett
00:26:57was in on the blitz
00:26:58before the Patriots.
00:26:59And, of course, you remember
00:27:00not too long ago,
00:27:01Andre Tippett came from
00:27:02the black blind side
00:27:03and laid out Lynn Dickey
00:27:04that time the whistle blew.
00:27:07Would you believe
00:27:08Green Bay,
00:27:09with its high-powered offense,
00:27:10only has eight first downs
00:27:11in the entire game of it?
00:27:12Please reset the clock
00:27:13to 13.56.
00:27:17He wears number 80.
00:27:18He can fly.
00:27:19Let's see how to get
00:27:20the ball to him.
00:27:22First and 10.
00:27:23Dickey back to pass.
00:27:25Throwing intended
00:27:26for Paul Coffman
00:27:27and it is behind him
00:27:28with Steve Nelson
00:27:29on the cover.
00:27:30He chose Coffman
00:27:31for a reason.
00:27:32Jim Coffman
00:27:33is a shorter throw.
00:27:34He can get the quicker
00:27:35hook patterns to Coffman.
00:27:36If he looks downfield
00:27:37to throw to Lofton
00:27:38and Epps,
00:27:39he might have problems
00:27:40because his offensive line
00:27:41is not protecting him,
00:27:42not giving him the time.
00:27:44Look at that.
00:27:46Terrible day
00:27:47for James Lofton.
00:27:4822 yards for a man
00:27:49over the last two years.
00:27:50He's had over 1,300 yards
00:27:52in each of the last two seasons.
00:27:53And Dickey's
00:27:54only completed seven.
00:27:55Whoa.
00:27:56Seven of 12
00:27:57for 106 yards.
00:27:58First, second and 10.
00:28:01Play action pass.
00:28:02Pressure's on.
00:28:03He gets away from Ken Sims.
00:28:05And there is a flag
00:28:06on the plate.
00:28:08Pass was intended
00:28:09for Coffman again.
00:28:19This time it will be
00:28:20holding against New England.
00:28:26Holding.
00:28:27Number 56.
00:28:28Defense.
00:28:30Automatic first down.
00:28:32Andre Tippett
00:28:33was the man they called.
00:28:34Of course,
00:28:35one in the afternoon
00:28:36he's having,
00:28:37he already has three sacks.
00:28:38But you know,
00:28:39Tippett told us yesterday
00:28:40the worst thing that he does
00:28:41as a defender
00:28:42is defend against the pass.
00:28:44If he can defend against
00:28:45a run, very well.
00:28:46We all know
00:28:47he can defend extremely well.
00:28:48But covering people
00:28:49coming out of the backfield
00:28:50is his weakness.
00:28:51We'll take a look
00:28:52at the right-hand side
00:28:53of the screen
00:28:54and see if we can pick it up there.
00:28:55Yep.
00:28:56He grabbed on for a moment
00:28:57onto Coffman's jersey
00:28:58and then he's pushing
00:28:59the running back
00:29:00out of the backfield.
00:29:05Dickey back to pass.
00:29:06Going deep this time
00:29:07for James Lofton
00:29:08and he's double covered.
00:29:09The pass is incomplete.
00:29:12So we talked about
00:29:13going to Lofton.
00:29:14They go to Lofton.
00:29:15Negative results.
00:29:17Well, they know
00:29:18you have to throw the ball
00:29:19because your running game
00:29:20is going nowhere.
00:29:21So it puts Dickey
00:29:22in a pickle.
00:29:23And if I were playing against him,
00:29:24I'd double cover him also.
00:29:25And that's exactly
00:29:26what they do.
00:29:27Fred Marion comes in
00:29:28as the second man
00:29:29knocks the ball away
00:29:30number 31.
00:29:31Of course, Ronnie Lippitt
00:29:32might need help
00:29:33on a receiver
00:29:34like James Lofton.
00:29:36Well, any cornerback
00:29:37will tell you
00:29:38he'll take all the help
00:29:39he can get.
00:29:42Second and ten.
00:29:48Dickey again.
00:29:49In and out of the hands
00:29:50of Lofton.
00:29:51Ronnie Lippitt
00:29:52on the coverage
00:29:53and that time
00:29:54the all four receiver
00:29:55had some room.
00:29:56How many times
00:29:57you've seen Lofton
00:29:58catch that ball
00:29:59and then just put it
00:30:00into overdrive
00:30:01and sprint to the end zone?
00:30:02And you hear the oohs
00:30:03and ahhs from the crowd.
00:30:04They know
00:30:05that could have been
00:30:06a big play for Greenville.
00:30:07Take a look at it again.
00:30:08He reaches out.
00:30:09The ball is definitely catchable.
00:30:10Just drops it
00:30:11as he's trying to turn up field
00:30:12to take off.
00:30:17So it's third and ten.
00:30:19The Patriots
00:30:20with their
00:30:21nickel defense
00:30:22and five defensive backs.
00:30:28Dickey's hit
00:30:29as he releases the ball
00:30:30and it is incomplete
00:30:31intended for Harlan Hucklebee.
00:30:36A long afternoon
00:30:37for Lynn Dickey
00:30:39who's been injured
00:30:40so many times
00:30:41in his career
00:30:42but the defensive unit
00:30:43of the New England Patriots
00:30:44gets a standing ovation.
00:30:45Pressure.
00:30:46He throws his ball.
00:30:47He doesn't want to throw it yet
00:30:48but he has to
00:30:49because there are
00:30:50white shirts everywhere.
00:30:54Pressure.
00:30:55It does things for people.
00:30:56It's doing something
00:30:57for Lynn Dickey today.
00:30:59Once again
00:31:00Joe Prokop
00:31:01is in to punt
00:31:02for Green Bay.
00:31:05He's had a
00:31:06real good afternoon.
00:31:08A left footer.
00:31:09You don't see many of those around.
00:31:11Irving Fryer
00:31:12back to receive
00:31:13for the Patriots.
00:31:16Another good punt
00:31:17by Prokop.
00:31:19This is Fryer
00:31:20at the 25 yard line.
00:31:22Puts his head down
00:31:23gets over the 35
00:31:24to about the 36 yard line
00:31:25and he's tackled
00:31:26by Mark Cannon.
00:31:29Now the Patriots
00:31:30have the ball
00:31:31first and 10.
00:31:37This is Tony Collins.
00:31:39Darryl Jones
00:31:40in on the tackle
00:31:41for Green Bay.
00:31:42You know
00:31:43just mentioning
00:31:44Irving Fryer
00:31:45with Stanley Morgan out
00:31:46and now Irving Fryer
00:31:47leaving
00:31:48that certainly puts a crimp
00:31:49in the Patriot offense.
00:31:50Of course Fryer
00:31:51was the first player
00:31:52taken in a draft
00:31:53in 84
00:31:54much like Sims was
00:31:55Kenneth Sims
00:31:56a few years before.
00:31:57So the Patriots
00:31:58have franchised players.
00:32:00And there you go
00:32:01Fryer leaving.
00:32:04It's amazing.
00:32:05Yesterday he was telling me
00:32:06hey I'm going to get to see
00:32:07James Lawton
00:32:08the guy that he admires.
00:32:09He never figured
00:32:10that this would happen.
00:32:11And they both
00:32:12were at number 80.
00:32:15Second and five.
00:32:17Look at Craig James run.
00:32:19Enough yardage
00:32:20for the first down.
00:32:22Tackle made by
00:32:23Ezra Johnson.
00:32:30Next Sunday
00:32:31in the NFL today
00:32:32a special feature
00:32:33Stormin Norman
00:32:34of the Philadelphia Eagles.
00:32:35Herb Cross takes a look at it.
00:32:36Norman Brayman
00:32:37the fiery new owner
00:32:38of the Eagles
00:32:39and you know
00:32:40he's taking that
00:32:41hard financial line.
00:32:42He's still
00:32:43in Detroit.
00:32:44He still has Robinson
00:32:45Harrison Williams
00:32:46not signed.
00:32:47So the man is taking
00:32:48a hard line.
00:32:49A lot of people
00:32:50are watching
00:32:51to see what he does
00:32:52around the league
00:32:53to see if it works.
00:32:54And you'll get a preview
00:32:55of that next week
00:32:56on the NFL Today.
00:32:57Herb Cross.
00:32:58Yes.
00:32:59Irving Fryer
00:33:00has just left
00:33:01with injured ribs.
00:33:02Here's Eason
00:33:03back to pass
00:33:04and it is complete.
00:33:07Gerwin Williams
00:33:08over to Cedric Jones
00:33:09Cedric Jones
00:33:10as a pass receiver there.
00:33:11George Cumbia
00:33:13You know Jim
00:33:14if I were the Packers now
00:33:15and I'm trailing 19 to 6
00:33:16and I have 11 and a half
00:33:17minutes left in the game
00:33:18I'm going to come after
00:33:19the Patriots.
00:33:2511 34 left to go
00:33:26in the ballgame.
00:33:32New England leading
00:33:33Green Bay 19 to 6.
00:33:37It is second and three.
00:33:43Inside handoff.
00:33:45And there's a fumble.
00:33:46And it looks like the Packers
00:33:47get it back.
00:33:49Looks like John Anderson
00:33:50gets the ball back
00:33:51as Tony Collins
00:33:52fumbles the ball.
00:34:00So one of the few breaks
00:34:01that the Packers
00:34:02have gotten this afternoon
00:34:03and they have the ball again.
00:34:07And it is a fumble
00:34:08and it looks like
00:34:09the Packers get it back.
00:34:13Lynn Dickey
00:34:14back on the field
00:34:15for Green Bay.
00:34:19It will be first and 10.
00:34:21From the Packer
00:34:2244 yard line.
00:34:23And this game is far from over
00:34:24with 11 minutes left.
00:34:26Especially when the Packers
00:34:27have the potential
00:34:28of striking at any time.
00:34:43And Dickey is down.
00:34:44First pressure was put in
00:34:45by Don Blackman.
00:34:52And now for an NFL
00:34:53Today report.
00:34:54Let's go to New York
00:34:55and Brent Muskerger.
00:34:58Jim the major story
00:34:59developing today.
00:35:00The Minnesota Vikings
00:35:01have tied the Super Bowl
00:35:02champions.
00:35:03This pass set up
00:35:04their touchdown.
00:35:05Tommy Kramer to Leo Lewis.
00:35:0749ers 7 the Vikings 7.
00:35:09Back now to Jeff.
00:35:13Thank you very much Brent.
00:35:14That is a big surprise Jim.
00:35:15Well Bud Grant is back
00:35:16in Minnesota.
00:35:22The Packers are trying
00:35:23to get back.
00:35:24Blackman in again.
00:35:26That's six sacks
00:35:27this afternoon
00:35:28for New England.
00:35:31That's one of the problems
00:35:32of being an immobile quarterback.
00:35:34A veteran quarterback
00:35:35who's had a lot of injuries
00:35:36like Lynn Dickey.
00:35:37He just can't get away
00:35:38from the rush.
00:35:39He can't buy time.
00:35:40Sacks the last two times
00:35:41when a younger
00:35:42more mobile quarterback
00:35:43might have been able
00:35:44to get away from this.
00:35:45Take a look at it right here.
00:35:47Blackman with a good move.
00:35:48See Dickey.
00:35:49Another quarterback
00:35:50might have been able
00:35:51to spin out and get away.
00:35:52Dickey just been around
00:35:53too long.
00:35:5437 years old.
00:35:55But Blackman was too much
00:35:56that time for Harlan Hucklebee
00:35:57as he got around Hucklebee
00:35:58who was trying to block him.
00:36:00Third and 17.
00:36:06This is Jesse Clark.
00:36:08A little running room.
00:36:09Across the 45.
00:36:10To about the 46 yard line.
00:36:12Knocked out of bounds
00:36:13there by Fred Marion.
00:36:15A good play.
00:36:16The defense expecting a pass.
00:36:18So they try to pick it up
00:36:19with a run.
00:36:20It doesn't work.
00:36:21But still they got
00:36:22some yardage out of it.
00:36:25However.
00:36:26Not enough.
00:36:27Not enough.
00:36:33I'll tell you what.
00:36:34New England is saying
00:36:35to these guys.
00:36:36Look we're going to come up.
00:36:37We're going to challenge you.
00:36:38Look at how tight
00:36:39those defensive backs are.
00:36:40On Jefferson.
00:36:41And on.
00:36:42Excuse me.
00:36:43On Lofton.
00:36:44And Epps.
00:36:45Of course they do have
00:36:46help deep.
00:36:47That's why they can do that.
00:36:49So Joe Prokop is back in
00:36:50to punt for.
00:36:52Green Bay.
00:36:53He's had a great afternoon.
00:36:55Stefan Starr.
00:36:57Back to receive.
00:36:58Of the Patriots at the 10.
00:37:00A line drive kick.
00:37:01Hits at the 15.
00:37:02Hits.
00:37:03Starring at about the
00:37:049 yard line and the
00:37:05loose ball.
00:37:08But there is a flag on
00:37:09the play.
00:37:11The Patriots recover
00:37:12the fumble.
00:37:15The Patriots recover after
00:37:16the ball hit Stefan starring.
00:37:18But there is a flag on the
00:37:19play.
00:37:20Preliminary call.
00:37:22The Packers had an illegal
00:37:23man downfield.
00:37:24Here.
00:37:26Broke up again back to
00:37:27punt.
00:37:28Stefan starring this time
00:37:29about his own 15 yard line.
00:37:38Starring fumbles the ball
00:37:39again.
00:37:40But the Patriots again
00:37:41recover.
00:37:44You wonder if they're going
00:37:45to miss Irving Fryer.
00:37:46Well that'll tell you about
00:37:47it.
00:37:48He's fumbled the ball twice
00:37:49on punt.
00:37:50Patriots dodged the bullet.
00:37:55This continues to go your
00:37:56way.
00:37:57That's exactly what's
00:37:58happened with the Patriots
00:37:59this afternoon.
00:38:01First and 10.
00:38:02At their 14.
00:38:05Is Tony Collins.
00:38:07Collins took out the 20 yard
00:38:08line before a tackle by Randy
00:38:09Scott.
00:38:15Other scores this afternoon.
00:38:17The Giants really putting it
00:38:18to the Eagles.
00:38:20Tampa Bay trailing Chicago.
00:38:24San Francisco.
00:38:25We just got an update on
00:38:26Brent Musgrave in New York on
00:38:27that score San Francisco and
00:38:28Minnesota.
00:38:29Here is St.
00:38:30Louis leading Cleveland by 14
00:38:31in the fourth period.
00:38:33Houston over Miami.
00:38:34Well.
00:38:35Detroit over Atlanta.
00:38:37Pittsburgh big over
00:38:38Indianapolis.
00:38:40Kansas City big over New
00:38:41Orleans.
00:38:43Seattle over Cincinnati in
00:38:44the third period.
00:38:49This is Craig James the ball
00:38:50carrier for the Patriots.
00:38:52He's tackled behind the line
00:38:53of scrimmage by John Anderson.
00:38:56You just mentioned that
00:38:57Houston was ahead of Miami.
00:38:58Well I just got a report that
00:38:59Dan Marino.
00:39:01Hurt his wrist and that
00:39:02stroke is in there now a
00:39:03quarterback and he just threw
00:39:04a 67 yard pass to Duper
00:39:07Miami trailing Houston.
00:39:08What an upset that would be.
00:39:10And what a lift for the New
00:39:11England Patriots who will
00:39:12always have to deal with the
00:39:13shadow of the Miami Dolphins in
00:39:15their division.
00:39:16Yeah I remember yesterday
00:39:17Derek Ramsey was telling us
00:39:18that one of the things the
00:39:19Patriots are going to have to
00:39:20do this year is pass more
00:39:21because they have to keep up
00:39:22from an offensive standpoint
00:39:23with those Dolphins.
00:39:28And the Patriots are in the
00:39:29shotgun formation.
00:39:33Here comes the play from the
00:39:34Packers.
00:39:42So that time even beat the
00:39:44blitz.
00:39:45Someone must tell Ronnie Burgess
00:39:47that when the blitz is on and
00:39:48you're covering him then you
00:39:49must take away the inside
00:39:51because that's where the
00:39:52receiver wants to go and that's
00:39:53where the quarterback wants to
00:39:54throw the ball.
00:39:55You take away anything.
00:39:56It's got to be the inside.
00:39:57He did not.
00:39:58Williams makes the catch comes
00:39:59up for the first down.
00:40:03At the 30 yard line.
00:40:07So the passing attack of the
00:40:09New England Patriots has been
00:40:10there has been very effective
00:40:11this afternoon.
00:40:13We've gone to a variety of
00:40:14receivers at different
00:40:16distances.
00:40:18With a great deal of success.
00:40:30A little bit of smart running as
00:40:31Williams was concerned and got
00:40:32up into the line of scrimmage
00:40:33and stopped let people run
00:40:34around and then pick up an
00:40:35extra couple of yards.
00:40:36Not only smart running but I
00:40:37have to question the Packer
00:40:38defense.
00:40:39That was a play that could have
00:40:40been stopped in the line of
00:40:41scrimmage or even for a yard
00:40:42loss.
00:40:43Yet the man picks up a few
00:40:44yards.
00:40:45I mean some of the jets on the
00:40:46plane ride home from the game
00:40:47in Green Bay last week told me
00:40:49that the Packer defense didn't
00:40:51play at all.
00:40:53They were just pathetic.
00:40:54They weren't hitting.
00:40:55They weren't coming off the
00:40:56ball.
00:40:57They had rarely seen a defense
00:40:58in the NFL play so poorly.
00:40:59Again this afternoon they're
00:41:00missing tackles and not
00:41:01aggressive.
00:41:02Loud cheering just heard was a
00:41:03crowd here got the score of the
00:41:05Dolphins football game.
00:41:11Here's James again.
00:41:12Back to the inside.
00:41:13He has some running room.
00:41:15You better look out.
00:41:17James will score.
00:41:29That's a great ball.
00:41:30He's going to do a good job
00:41:31catching it.
00:41:51A 65 yard touchdown run by Greg
00:41:54James who now has 98 yards
00:41:57rushing in twelve carriers this
00:41:58The ability to set up blocks and cut off them and then deceptive speed. Watch him run away from people here.
00:42:04He looks like he's too big at 6 feet 220 to do this, but he does. Shades of SMU with Eric Dickerson. Remember them then?
00:42:11Oh!
00:42:14Here's Tony Franklin in to attempt the extra point conversion.
00:42:22And so the Patriots yards five plays assume three minutes and 19 seconds on the clock.
00:42:28The kick goes into the end zone, and there it will be downed by Walter Stanley.
00:42:41Total yardage this afternoon, John. Really shocking, 102 for Green Bay.
00:42:46And New England, I mean just overpowering the Green Bay defense, 373 yards total offense.
00:42:52And Lynn Dickey just isn't having a day, but you can't blame it on Lynn Dickey. You have to question his offensive line and the lack of a running game.
00:43:00And if Dickey felt some pressure early in the game, trailing by 20 points with 6.16 left to go, he's really going to see some heat now.
00:43:11He's back to pass, throwing deep, and it's almost intercepted.
00:43:17Ronnie Lippett. Pass was intended for Phillip Epps.
00:43:23Well, the New England Patriots have the backers exactly where they want them.
00:43:26They know they're not going to run the ball, they know Dickey has to throw it, they know his offensive line hasn't been able to protect him,
00:43:31so those defensive backs are just going to sit back there and take it away.
00:43:35And look at Phillip Epps. I mean, what a preseason he's had. Only two catches for nine yards this afternoon.
00:43:42Loftin, one reception. Second half, Dickey has not completed a pass in five attempts.
00:43:49And he must pass now.
00:43:53Gets away from Blackman. Pass is complete to James Loftin. That's all, and it ruled incomplete.
00:43:59Oh, I'm surprised, because presence of mind.
00:44:01First of all, oh, now they say it is complete. One official said it was incomplete, the other said it was complete.
00:44:06I was just going to say, James Loftin, with that presence of mind of a veteran receiver,
00:44:09you know, was right along the sideline, danced his feet in, and got them both in the way I saw it,
00:44:13so it should be a completion.
00:44:16Take a look at it again. Watch him dance. Watch him do a little dance here, yeah.
00:44:19I'll do a little soft shoe.
00:44:22And it was the official at the top of the screen who at first ruled incomplete,
00:44:25but the other official said it was, and as you saw, indeed, he was, inbound.
00:44:306-0-4, left to go in the ballgame.
00:44:33First and ten for Green and White.
00:44:37Dickie going deep, and send it for Philip Epps.
00:44:41Oh, my goodness, what a super catch.
00:44:45What a catch by Epps. As a matter of fact, I thought Ronnie Lippitt might have grabbed him a little bit to slow him down there.
00:44:50Epps just kept going, but watch, I mean, he is world-class speed.
00:44:54You're talking about a man who can run the 109.2.
00:44:56Watch Lippitt here as he's going by, just grab him a little bit, slows him down.
00:45:00Epps says, get away from me, I'm still going to catch the ball.
00:45:03Watch the concentration, 43-yard completion.
00:45:08Three receptions for 52 yards now.
00:45:12To Philip Epps, the man who many people compare to Cliff Branch of the Los Angeles Raiders.
00:45:16The man who is replacing John Jefferson.
00:45:23Dickie again, he gets it as he throws, the pass is complete to Jesse Clark.
00:45:27Clark pulls his way over the 20 inside to about the 16-yard line,
00:45:31was tackled there by John Rembert.
00:45:33And you get the sense that the Packers are now waking up on offense, but is it too late?
00:45:37Five minutes left, you're down 26-6.
00:45:43And for one of the few times, the Packers protect Dickie.
00:45:47He throws to his second man too, see him looking downfield, not there,
00:45:50immediately knows where to throw the ball, and then a nice move by Jesse Clark to get away.
00:45:55Second and two, ball at the 17-yard line of New England.
00:45:59Inside handoff goes to Ellis.
00:46:03He's tackled there by Dennis Owens as he gets down just about the 15-yard line, maybe just inside.
00:46:13And there's a Packer down on the field.
00:46:18Four minutes and ten seconds left to go in the ballgame.
00:46:21It's first and ten for Green Bay at the 15-yard line of New England.
00:46:30Dickie going, intended for Paul Kaufman, and there's Andre Tippett knocking it away,
00:46:34but there is a penalty marker on the play.
00:46:43Pass interference, number 56, defense, first down.
00:46:52This is Andre Tippett, take a look at him right there, number 56, knocks the ball down,
00:46:57but before that, there was some bumping going on with Paul Kaufman.
00:47:07Raymond Berry and his coaches, they're probably talking about
00:47:11what the Patriots are going to do the next time they get the ball.
00:47:15Most likely just run out the clock and walk away with a victory.
00:47:19But the Packers now are trying to get on the scoreboard and get their second touchdown of the afternoon.
00:47:25Dickie rolling up, he gets hit as he throws the ball, it's intended for Paul Kaufman, incomplete.
00:47:33You know, I was talking to Paul Kaufman the other day, and what surprised me,
00:47:37and I mentioned it before, Jim, is that the Packers have not come out with fire,
00:47:40especially with a man like Forrest Gregg, who demands it, and Kaufman was saying to me,
00:47:45so, he was saying when Bart Starr was here, you know, he thought we could motivate ourselves,
00:47:49but Forrest says, you know, I'll make you play or else.
00:47:53But he hasn't been able to do it this afternoon.
00:47:59I wonder if there will be a lot of or else's after this game.
00:48:02I would bet.
00:48:043.55 left to go in the ballgame, Dickie going for Kaufman, he gets it, and scores.
00:48:15An 8-yard touchdown pass from Lynn Dickie to Paul Kaufman,
00:48:19and the Packers have their second touchdown of the afternoon.
00:48:23Paul Kaufman's one of his favorite targets, and it's an easy throw, take a look,
00:48:27he backpedals, Kaufman coming across the middle, the ball thrown down,
00:48:31and then Kaufman just has instinct.
00:48:33He knows where that goal line is, turns right up for the touchdown.
00:48:37Aldell Greco is in to attempt the extra point conversion for Green Bay.
00:48:45Green! Green! Green!
00:48:53And with the extra point conversion, it makes it 26-13,
00:48:58and the Patriots now expecting an onside kick.
00:49:05Getting nine men up front.
00:49:08Here we go!
00:49:11And you know what? The Packers got it back.
00:49:15The ball was recovered by Brian Noble.
00:49:19Rookie linebacker, yes, comes up with the ball, and that ball,
00:49:23it touched a New England Patriot player, he had a chance to come up with it,
00:49:27he touched it, after that it does not have to go to 10 yards.
00:49:30And the Patriots come up, remember too, take a look at it again,
00:49:33it's just a little squib, you wonder if it's even going to go 10 yards,
00:49:36but the Patriots touch the ball, watch right here,
00:49:40coughs it right up, that's the two-poo, coughs it up,
00:49:43and then Noble comes up, and the Packers have life with 3.46 left.
00:49:47One of the people on the Patriots who has, well, he has one of the best pair of hands on the club,
00:49:52but you saw how the ball hit him in his chest, bounced off, Noble gets it,
00:49:56and the Packers have the ball.
00:49:57Coming up next, U.S. Open Tennis Championships, the finals,
00:50:00Michael Moore against Devon Linder.
00:50:07The blitz is on.
00:50:09Dickey is hit, and he goes deep and sends it for Loftin.
00:50:13And it is incomplete.
00:50:15Ronnie Lippitt on the coverage downfield for the Patriots.
00:50:18And you're going to see more of that in the NFL this year,
00:50:20incidental pass interference will not be called with the new rule
00:50:24that allows a defensive back to bump a receiver if he's looking back for the ball.
00:50:28And that time, take a look at it, here Dickey tries to unload to Loftin and get it right away,
00:50:33ooh, Sims really clouts Dickey.
00:50:37And no pass interference called.
00:50:42Lippitt goes off the field.
00:50:48And the wind was coming into today's game.
00:50:51Here's our first final of the day, it is Seattle over Cincinnati, 28 to 24.
00:50:56Tossback goes to Harlan Huckabee.
00:50:59He's met by Donnie Blackman.
00:51:03Andre Tippett ends up with the ball, but it was ruled in.
00:51:13That's not exactly what you want, I think you have to put the ball in the air and say I'm going all or nothing.
00:51:17You're down by 13 points, there's three minutes left in the game.
00:51:21I mean, forget about the run. Let's do it.
00:51:25A couple of other scorers, here we are, the 49ers, they are on top.
00:51:30And our second final of the day, the Giants shutting out the Philadelphia Eagles, 21-0.
00:51:35Here's Dickey back to pass.
00:51:37Goes across the middle, intended and complete to Paul Coffman, Donnie Blackman on the tackle.
00:51:42The cock becomes a real factor now, he doesn't have time to throw long,
00:51:45so he's trying to find Coffman, set up the long pass,
00:51:48but of course, New England knows that, 2.43 left on the clock.
00:51:51But wouldn't you think he would throw those short or medium passes, maybe out to the sidelines?
00:51:55To try and get out of bounds, or else use his timeouts.
00:51:58He's got to move his team, he can't be taking this much time in the huddle.
00:52:09Fourth and seven.
00:52:16The blitz is on, and Dickey goes down again.
00:52:19Garen Veras.
00:52:28Tossed back to Mosey Tatupu.
00:52:32And Tatupu is tackled by Robert Brown.
00:52:36And I had a real sense that Forrest Gregg was confident coming into this game against his old teammate,
00:52:41and his Green Bay as the Giants go to Lambeau Field.
00:52:45Second and four for New England.
00:52:48Here's the toss back. This is Weathers.
00:52:52And he puts his shoulder into New England, I'm very happy to see that.
00:52:57And they're very happy to see the performance of their Patriots this afternoon.
00:53:01Tatupu, the ball carrier, there's a fumble on the play.
00:53:06And the Packers get it back.
00:53:09Packers have another shot.
00:53:11Down by 13.
00:53:14Packers have another shot.
00:53:16Down by 13, a minute 52 left.
00:53:18It'll have to work some magic to get back in this.
00:53:20John Dorsey coming up with a fumble recovery for Green Bay.
00:53:30You think about the contest this afternoon.
00:53:33Lynn Dickey said he wanted someone to rush for 85, maybe 90 yards.
00:53:37They've only had 30 yards rushing.
00:53:39New England, 170 yards rushing.
00:53:41Total yards, Green Bay 153, New England a whopping 382 yards.
00:53:53Here's Dickey back to pass to the near sidelines,
00:53:56and send it for Phillip Epps in and out of his hands.
00:53:59It's just been one of those afternoons.
00:54:01Just another example of the frustration that Green Bay's felt.
00:54:04That ball was catchable by Epps, just drops it.
00:54:07And Dickey's wondering what he can do.
00:54:09With two timeouts left for both teams.
00:54:16The crowd here acknowledges the final score.
00:54:18The Houston Oilers defeating the Miami Dolphins 26 to 23.
00:54:25Houston may be for real.
00:54:27Warren Moon, Mike Rozier and company.
00:54:30And what a shot in the arm it is to the Patriots.
00:54:33Flag on the play.
00:54:34It looks like Julius' false start against the quarterback.
00:54:41A minute and 40 seconds left to go in the ballgame.
00:54:48Flags are down as the pass is completed to Jesse Clark.
00:54:51Clark is tackled by Ronnie Lippitt at about the 32-yard line.
00:55:00You know Jim, you talk about the lift it is for New England with Miami losing.
00:55:05How about the downer for the Packers?
00:55:07The Giants winning 21 to nothing and they have to face each other next week.
00:55:1175. Offense. Still second down.
00:55:18The executive producer of the NFL on CBS is Terry O'Neill.
00:55:22Today's game produced by Charles H. Milton III.
00:55:26Directed by Larry Kobitlina.
00:55:30Mark Wolfe, the associate producer.
00:55:32And thank you everyone for helping us here at Sullivan Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
00:55:44You think Houston is happy?
00:55:46I would say after performance 21 completions for 241 yards, good afternoon.
00:55:52And on the other side of the coin, not so good afternoon for Lynn Dickey.
00:55:57Who's going there for Phillip X.
00:56:00Can you believe that? Minnesota 21-21.
00:56:03Anderson with a one-yard touchdown to tie the score.
00:56:06You know emotion plays such an important part.
00:56:09Bud Grant coming back to Minnesota.
00:56:11They're at home against the Super Bowl champions.
00:56:14And they're going to win the game.
00:56:15Emotion plays such an important part.
00:56:17Bud Grant coming back to Minnesota.
00:56:19They're at home against the Super Bowl champions.
00:56:21Certainly the class of the NFL.
00:56:23Yet they're tied 21-21 in the fourth quarter.
00:56:26Coming up next, the U.S. Open Tennis Championships.
00:56:29The men's singles finals.
00:56:31John McEnroe against Yvonne Lindell.
00:56:33And that will be a terrific match.
00:56:35Big Mac is hot.
00:56:41This pass complete to Gary Ellis.
00:56:45There's another flag on the play.
00:56:47Ellis is tackled by Don Blackman and John Rembert.
00:56:57So here at the end of the game, things getting under Raymond Barrett.
00:57:06Dickey gets hit as he throws again.
00:57:08The pass is intended for Ellis.
00:57:10It's incomplete. Fred Marriott in defending for New England.
00:57:13And you know, talking to Forrest Gregg, he said,
00:57:16you have to contain this man, Tony Easton, if you're going to win.
00:57:19They haven't contained him.
00:57:21He's thrown for 241 yards.
00:57:23One touchdown, one interception.
00:57:25But more than that, he's just controlled the tempo of the game.
00:57:28He ball controlled.
00:57:30He ran the ball well with Tony Collins and Craig James.
00:57:32And he passed it when he had to.
00:57:34And got the big play right before the half,
00:57:36which I think was the difference.
00:57:38That touchdown before the half took the air out of the Green Bay balloon.
00:57:40And you could see him really maturing on the field.
00:57:44You could see him looking the field,
00:57:46surveying the field completely, completing his passes.
00:57:49But Lynn Dickey, he has got to be sore, disgusted.
00:57:54Stephanie Starring is back to receive the punt
00:57:57from the Green Bay Packers' Joe Proko.
00:58:02A flag is down.
00:58:05The ball is popped loose.
00:58:10And there is a flag.
00:58:12There is a flag on the plate.
00:58:14Kenneth Simms.
00:58:16Running into the kicker, number 77.
00:58:18First down.
00:58:20Kenneth Simms ran into Proko.
00:58:22And that will give the Packers a first down.
00:58:31Kenneth Simms, you'll see it.
00:58:33You'll see it right here.
00:58:35The fourth year man from the University of Texas.
00:58:37Take a look at him right here.
00:58:38Catches his left arm.
00:58:40Not much of a hitch.
00:58:42Tried to avoid it, but still a penalty.
00:58:44Of course, Kenneth Simms, they're expecting so much of him.
00:58:47Number one draft choice in the entire draft back in 82.
00:58:50Really hasn't fulfilled his potential.
00:58:52...who recovered the fumble after Stephanie Starring fumbled it.
00:58:56A minute and three seconds left to go in the game.
00:59:00The Packers have the ball
00:59:02at the Patriots' 44-yard line.
00:59:06This pass is complete to Gary Ellis.
00:59:09Ellis is tackled by Rod McSwain.
00:59:12Coming up next,
00:59:14the U.S. Open Tennis Championships,
00:59:16the men's singles finals.
00:59:18And it promises to be a great one.
00:59:20John McEnroe against Yvonne Lindell.
00:59:28This pass is complete to Phillip Epps
00:59:30who gets out of bounds.
00:59:32Epps gets to the 23-yard line of the Patriots.
00:59:35Julius Adams puts it in.
00:59:37Julius Adams putting tremendous pressure
00:59:39as the rest of the New England Patriot defense
00:59:41has done all afternoon long on Lynn Dickens.
00:59:4734 seconds left in the ballgame.
00:59:50You know, in the tennis coming up next here on CBS,
00:59:52my question is, remember McEnroe yesterday?
00:59:54He had that five-set match
00:59:56in 100-plus degree heat against V-Lander.
00:59:58I have to wonder if he'll be drained
01:00:00while Yvonne Lindell got by Jimmy Connors
01:00:02who sprained his ankle.
01:00:04So it should be interesting to see
01:00:06if he can dig deep inside himself
01:00:08and find the wherewithal to win that.
01:00:13Here's a draw play to Jesse Clark.
01:00:15That's a good block from Ellis.
01:00:17Jesse Clark gets in the touchdown
01:00:19and the Green Bay Packers
01:00:21have their third touchdown of the afternoon.
01:00:2823 yards.
01:00:31This game gets interesting, Jim.
01:00:33We've seen miracle finishes before.
01:00:35The New England defense that time
01:00:37just looked like they were going through the motion
01:00:39saying someone else will tackle him.
01:00:41Take a look at Jesse Clark again.
01:00:43Simple draw play.
01:00:45Watch the New England defense.
01:00:47Not very aggressive, kind of loafing around.
01:00:49Good block up front.
01:00:51And look, he's in slow motion,
01:00:53but nobody's really trying to make the tackle
01:00:55and he takes it in for a score.
01:00:57And now they're 26-19.
01:00:59It could be 26-20 with an onside kick possibility.
01:01:01And the conversion by Al Del Greco.
01:01:04The ball back, the Packers do.
01:01:06They go deep downtown to James Lofton.
01:01:086-3 in the end zone.
01:01:10Pulls it down, ties the score.
01:01:12Extra point, wins it for the Packers.
01:01:1427-26.
01:01:16Call that in 25 seconds of play.
01:01:18What do you think?
01:01:20If the Patriots agree.
01:01:22We'll find out.
01:01:24You know, one of the things you want to make sure
01:01:26you get on an onside kick from Del Greco
01:01:28is that you get the ball to bounce.
01:01:30And you know, maybe get up in the air
01:01:32so you have an opportunity for people
01:01:34to go in to knock people around.
01:01:36We'll find out.
01:01:38Because here's action time.
01:01:43And it goes out of bounds.
01:01:46And it's a fight.
01:01:52Wise choice by the New England Patriots
01:01:55to allow it go out of bounds.
01:01:57They saw it with the Patriots with 10 men up front.
01:02:00And here we go again.
01:02:06Another flag.
01:02:08The ball did not go 10 yards.
01:02:11See, that's what I was talking about.
01:02:13You have to hit the ball.
01:02:15And here we go again.
01:02:21And this time,
01:02:23Tutupu does hold on to the onside kick.
01:02:27The Patriots have the ball.
01:02:29And they have the lead.
01:02:33Two timeouts left for the Packers.
01:02:35Lynn Dickey can't be very optimistic
01:02:37or happy about the day.
01:02:40Because this score
01:02:42does not reflect
01:02:44really the way the game was played.
01:02:47Really, the Patriots dominated.
01:02:49The Packers, breakdowns in all areas of their game.
01:02:51Their offense didn't play well.
01:02:53Their defense, they had two kicks blocked.
01:02:55An extra point and a field goal
01:02:56takes the air out of your balloon.
01:02:58All phases of their game
01:03:00will have to be picked up for next week
01:03:02when they play the Giants.
01:03:07Raymond Berry,
01:03:11who has to take his club to Chicago
01:03:13to take on those tough Bears next week.
01:03:17Eason will just take the snap from center,
01:03:19go down on the knee.
01:03:23And the Packers call another timeout.
01:03:24The loss of Eason.
01:03:2819 seconds left.
01:03:31Eason, again, goes down on one knee.
01:03:35And that's going to do it.
01:03:38So two former teammates
01:03:41and friends
01:03:44compete on the opposite side of the field.
01:03:50In this game,
01:03:54Eason has to take the snap.
01:03:56And that's going to do it
01:03:58for this edition of Panther Sports Talk.
