00:00:00On a beautiful fall Sunday afternoon, welcome to Sullivan Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
00:00:05Last year, the Green Bay Packers finished second in their division, the NFC Central at 8-8,
00:00:10the New England Patriots also second, the AFC East 9-7.
00:00:13This preseason, the Packers and Patriots both have identical records of 1-3 after suffering many injuries up front.
00:00:20The weather conditions this afternoon are absolutely perfect and shouldn't have any effect on the ballgame.
00:00:25Hello everybody, I'm Jim Hill along with John Daugherty and John,
00:00:28the 85th season about to begin, new hopes and new expectations.
00:00:31Hope springs eternal for both these clubs that are trying to get into the playoff picture.
00:00:35They were respectable last year, this year they're trying to turn the corner, Jim.
00:00:39The Packers have won the toss and have elected to receive
00:00:42Tony Franklin, all set to kick off before the Patriots,
00:00:45Walt Stanley, number 87, and Gary Ellison, number 42, set to receive for the Packers,
00:00:50and the 86th season is underway of the NFL.
00:00:55The ball bounces at about the 6 and goes into the end zone,
00:00:57will be a touchback, and the Packers will take over 1st and 10 at their own 20-yard line.
00:01:07Starting offensive unit for the Green Bay Packers, led by the veteran quarterback Lynn Dickey.
00:01:15Up front, Ken Rutgers, the rookie from USC, starting in an offensive line that's really been hurt this year.
00:01:21A crowd of about 50,000 expected this afternoon,
00:01:25as the Packers really want to pick up where they left off last year
00:01:28when they finished the season winning 7 of their last 8.
00:01:311st and 10, Lynn Dickey at quarterback.
00:01:34Here's a tossback to Gary Ellis.
00:01:41Andre Tippett and Steve Nelson in on the tackle for the New England Patriots.
00:01:51A starting defensive unit for the Patriots, Ken Sims from the University of Texas,
00:01:55leading him up front, says this is his year to really get things going.
00:01:59A group of fine linebackers led by Andre Tippett, who had 18 sacks last season,
00:02:04and the secondary is led by All-Pro number 26, Raymond Claiborne.
00:02:11No gain on the play, 2nd and 10.
00:02:15A handoff to Jesse Clark.
00:02:21Clark is tackled by Larry McGrew and Don Blackmon.
00:02:24To say I'm shocked to see the Packers run the ball 2 plays in a row is an understatement.
00:02:28If the Packers are going to win this afternoon,
00:02:30they must put points on the board the way they'll know how to do best,
00:02:33and that's through the air, with Dickey going to Lofton, Epps, and Kauffman.
00:02:39Well, John Harlan Hucklebee has just checked into the ballgame now,
00:02:42along with Preston Denard.
00:02:453rd and 9, our ballgame just underway from Foxboro, Massachusetts.
00:02:59Another running play.
00:03:02How surprised are you, John?
00:03:03Very surprised.
00:03:04Dickey, for the last couple of years in the league,
00:03:06has been the best quarterback, other than Marino, in yards production.
00:03:10Forrest Gregg obviously wants to prove that he can run the ball against the Patriots.
00:03:14He ran it 3 times on his first drive, and the Pack has to give it away.
00:03:18I'm shocked because of their high-powered offensive passing game
00:03:22to see them run 3 times on a first drive.
00:03:25Well, the Packers are going to have to give the ball up now.
00:03:28Joe Prokko is in to punt,
00:03:30and the ever-dangerous Irving Fryer is back to receive for the Patriots.
00:03:36When you talk about a true game-breaker,
00:03:38that's exactly what Irving Fryer is right here.
00:03:42Not a good punt at all.
00:03:46Fryer gets the ball at about his 34-yard line,
00:03:48gets up to about the 35- to 36-and-a-half-yard line,
00:03:50tackle there made by Ronnie Burgess.
00:03:52So now the New England Patriots will take over.
00:03:54Heard all year long they're missing John Hannah,
00:03:56their outstanding all-pro.
00:03:59Here's Tony Easton.
00:04:06And the handoff goes to Gregg.
00:04:08And the handoff goes to Gregg James.
00:04:11James to the left side,
00:04:12tackle there made by John Anderson and Charles Martin.
00:04:20Defensive alignment for the Green Bay Packers.
00:04:22Ezra Johnson is the leader up front.
00:04:23He's trying to come back after that operation on his best,
00:04:27back where he had a herniated disc.
00:04:30The linebackers have been together a long time.
00:04:32They're small, but Mike Douglas told us yesterday,
00:04:34we're going to beat the Patriots.
00:04:35And in the secondary, they're led by Mark Murphy.
00:04:43Pick up a four, and a second and a six.
00:04:45That's Fryer in motion.
00:04:46And Easton is back to pass.
00:04:48Close to the near sidelines, and it is complete.
00:04:52Pass is complete to Cedric Jones,
00:04:54knocked out of bounds by Mark Lee.
00:04:56And it seems to be obvious from the very beginning
00:04:58what both teams are going to do.
00:04:59Forrest Gregg ran the ball three times.
00:05:01What does New England do?
00:05:02They come out thrice.
00:05:03What does New England do?
00:05:04They come out throwing right now.
00:05:06Raymond Berry's philosophy is to use balance,
00:05:08get the ball upfield with his quarterback, Tony Easton.
00:05:11Surprise, you might be surprised to know that Tony Easton
00:05:14was a third-rated quarterback in the NFL last year
00:05:16behind such names as Marino and Montana.
00:05:20So it is enough yardage for the first down.
00:05:21The ball just into Packer territory.
00:05:27Inside handle.
00:05:30This is Tony Collins.
00:05:34Nice pickup is what's tackled by John Anderson.
00:05:36And I think back to when we talked to Raymond Berry yesterday,
00:05:38he said he wanted his offense to be really unpredictable.
00:05:41And he certainly did.
00:05:42He wants to mix the run with the pass.
00:05:43Take a look at it from the end zone here.
00:05:44Watch the blocking that he gets.
00:05:47Right there, number 52 overruns the ball.
00:05:49That's George Cumbie inside, and that gives running room.
00:05:52That's a pickup of 12 yards.
00:05:55Another first down for the Patriots
00:05:57at the Packer 39-yard line.
00:06:04Good protection for Easton.
00:06:05Rolls out into the flag.
00:06:06It's complete to James.
00:06:09James bumped out of bounds at about the Packer 25-yard line
00:06:12by Tim Lewis, but there is a flag on the play.
00:06:19And it looks like it is holding.
00:06:21That's the preliminary call against New England.
00:06:25But we are seeing, John, where the Patriots are coming out,
00:06:28and they're on the attack.
00:06:30They are definitely on the attack.
00:06:31And Raymond Berry told us that.
00:06:32He's really a defensive-minded coach.
00:06:35Number 76.
00:06:37Offense.
00:06:39Still first down.
00:06:41That penalty is against Brian Holloway.
00:06:43When I say defensive-minded coach,
00:06:44I mean he has an offensive philosophy,
00:06:46a defensive philosophy for playing offense.
00:06:48Be aggressive.
00:06:49Take it to the defense.
00:06:50Make things happen.
00:06:51But, of course, there are a lot of people
00:06:52knowing Raymond Berry's background as a receiver.
00:06:55They feel automatically he's going to throw the ball a lot.
00:06:57And the Patriots have to be very careful
00:06:59when they throw the ball a lot.
00:07:00And the Patriots have three wide receivers in the ballgame.
00:07:07A little mix-up, but they get everything all settled.
00:07:09Eason back.
00:07:10Throwing across the middle.
00:07:11Completes Irving Friar.
00:07:12Friar gets loose.
00:07:17First down, Patriots.
00:07:21Irving Friar may be New England's version of James Lofton.
00:07:25He has incredible speed.
00:07:27Take a look at it from the end zone.
00:07:28It was a little confusing.
00:07:29Eason took his time.
00:07:31He got good protection,
00:07:32and he found Friar coming over the middle in the seam
00:07:35between the defensive backs.
00:07:36Friar makes the catch.
00:07:37Good for about 25 yards.
00:07:39And another first down for the Patriots,
00:07:42who are really on the move.
00:07:4310 minutes and 35 seconds left to go in the opening period.
00:07:48Tony Collins and Craig James in the backfield for the Patriots.
00:07:54And it's a reverse to Friar.
00:07:59Friar trying to pull his way down towards the 10-yard line
00:08:02before he's finally tackled by Tom Flynn.
00:08:05Just another example of the offense here in New England
00:08:08under Raymond Berry.
00:08:09Last year, they played that one-back offense.
00:08:11This year, they're going to come up with tricky plays,
00:08:14razzle-dazzle.
00:08:15How many times have you seen Green Bay do this
00:08:17with James Lofton?
00:08:18They give the ball to a really quick,
00:08:20good-running receiver on the reverse.
00:08:22He picks up good yardage for the first down.
00:08:24As a matter of fact, 13 yards, John.
00:08:28Now, the Patriots were telling us yesterday and the day before
00:08:31that they feel their offense will really explode today,
00:08:33and so far it has.
00:08:37At the 11-yard line, a handoff to Tony Collins.
00:08:41Back to the near sidelines.
00:08:42He's at the 10.
00:08:44And he scores.
00:08:56An 11-yard touchdown run by Tony Collins,
00:08:59and it was absolutely outstanding.
00:09:01The cutback was outstanding, but also the missed tackles
00:09:04by the Packers.
00:09:05Take a look at number 55.
00:09:07Coming up right here, Randy Scott, he shrugged off.
00:09:10And now watch Collins make Mark Lee miss.
00:09:12Shrugs him off, takes it into the end zone.
00:09:14So, while it was a fine run by Collins,
00:09:16it was a terrible defensive effort by the Packers.
00:09:19And you can be sure the defensive people from the Packers
00:09:22will hear about that from Forrest Gregg.
00:09:24But Tony Franklin is in to attempt the extra-point conversion
00:09:27for the Patriots.
00:09:29Eason is set to hold.
00:09:36So, after the 11-yard run,
00:09:39the New England Patriots have a 7-0 lead
00:09:41over the Green Bay Strike.
00:09:42And now it's time to head out to sea.
00:09:44Well, right now, the sea is nice and smooth for the Patriots.
00:09:47Absolutely.
00:09:48He got out to sea on the full steam in that first drive.
00:09:50Nice balance.
00:09:51Eason running the ball, throwing the ball.
00:09:53Collins, nice touchdown run, 11 yards.
00:09:56Here's Tony Franklin kicking off for New England.
00:10:00Gary Ellison coming out from about a yard inside the end zone.
00:10:04Ellison gets over the 25 to about the 26-yard line.
00:10:07Faust is in the last year of his contract there
00:10:10with the Notre Dame team.
00:10:13And the people there are already starting to
00:10:15really put a lot of pressure on him.
00:10:17But right now, the pressure is on the Packers.
00:10:19They trail by 7.
00:10:20First and 10 at their own 25.
00:10:22That's Philip Epps in motion.
00:10:24The pass, a quick pass to Epps.
00:10:30And he's got it.
00:10:32And he's tackled immediately by Andre Tippett.
00:10:35You know, I thought the emotional level would go the other way.
00:10:38I thought that Green Bay would have emotional level.
00:10:40But instead, Andre Tippett and the New England Patriots
00:10:43come out on fire.
00:10:44Take a look at it right here.
00:10:45Finally, Green Bay decides to throw the ball.
00:10:47Little fake.
00:10:48Try to get it to Epps in the open field.
00:10:50But Tippett, too quick, brings him down for a loss.
00:10:53Of 4 yards, as a matter of fact.
00:10:55And now it's 2nd and 14.
00:10:58As we talked to the Patriots yesterday,
00:11:00they were nice, loose, relaxed.
00:11:02Had fire in their eyes.
00:11:03And it's been displayed so far this afternoon.
00:11:11Well, I tell you what.
00:11:12The Patriots are really coming with fire in their eyes.
00:11:15The pass was intended for Paul Kaufman.
00:11:17But there was Don Blackman who got a hand up in Dickey's face.
00:11:20You know, the Patriots do not have a major pass rush
00:11:22from their up front men, Sims, Owens, and Williams.
00:11:25They rely on their linebackers, Tippett.
00:11:27And that time, Blackman was in Dickey's face.
00:11:30He got rid of the ball quickly.
00:11:31Actually, one of the backs should have been looking for the ball
00:11:33as a safety valve.
00:11:34He wasn't, so he just threw it away wisely.
00:11:36And that particular time, they took advantage
00:11:38of the inexperience of Ken Rutgers,
00:11:40the rookie from USC who was playing on that left side
00:11:42and has a start.
00:11:43So it's 3rd and 14 for the Packers.
00:11:45Three wide receivers in for Green Bay
00:11:47and Dickey's back to pass.
00:11:48The blitz is on.
00:11:50Going deep.
00:11:52Oh, what a catch by Preston Denard.
00:11:55Oh, my goodness.
00:11:57Preston Denard, who the Packers just picked up
00:11:59from the Buffalo Bills a couple of weeks ago.
00:12:01And remember, Dickey told us he has been absolutely great
00:12:03coming in and doing exactly what the Packers need.
00:12:05Well, that's what a veteran will do.
00:12:07He'll make that catch in his 8th year.
00:12:09Preston Denard knows what to do.
00:12:10Here, the blitz is on.
00:12:11He's hit after he throws the ball.
00:12:13Denard makes a nice adjustment on the outside,
00:12:15comes up with the catch.
00:12:17And we just received word that Mike Douglas,
00:12:19number 53 of the Packers, has injured his shoulder
00:12:21and he's in the locker room,
00:12:23probably having x-rays, and we'll have a further update
00:12:25on that a little bit later.
00:12:26But a pickup of 44 yards for the Packers.
00:12:29First and 10.
00:12:30Ball at the Patriot, 45-yard line.
00:12:39Quick pass to Ellis.
00:12:40And he's in trouble already, hit by Don Blackman.
00:12:44One of the most impressive things about the Patriot
00:12:47secondary and their whole defensive unit,
00:12:50John, I think you'll agree, is their linebacking corps.
00:12:52Big, strong, fast, and one of the best in the league.
00:12:54And besides that, definitely, they've been playing together
00:12:57for about four years now.
00:12:58And Steve Nelson, in his 12th year,
00:13:00is the man who is like a coach on the field
00:13:02that settles down the young talent
00:13:04like the Tippets and the Blackmans.
00:13:06And they are the best part of the defense
00:13:08of the New England Patriots.
00:13:15Second and 15 for Green Bay.
00:13:23Dickey going long.
00:13:25Oh, and a super kiss by Phillip Epps.
00:13:29But it is ruled out of bounds.
00:13:36Phillip Epps working on Raymond Claiborne
00:13:38on the far side.
00:13:39Take a look at it again.
00:13:40Epps makes two or three moves.
00:13:41He stops, he goes, and he finally goes up
00:13:43and gets the ball.
00:13:44Claiborne had good position to watch Epps right here.
00:13:47Bing goes up.
00:13:48And he must have stepped out of bounds sooner, Jim,
00:13:50because he caught the ball inbounds.
00:13:52I don't know why they would call it there.
00:13:54Unless he stepped out sooner and came back in.
00:13:56It was ruled an incomplete pass,
00:13:59and the Packers are in a situation
00:14:01that they don't want to be in,
00:14:02where the Patriots have their nipple back in.
00:14:04Five defensive backs.
00:14:07It's complete to Gary Ellis.
00:14:11Ellis gets down to about the New England 30-yard line
00:14:13before he's tackled by the Patriots.
00:14:15Ellis gets down to about the New England 30-yard line
00:14:17before he's tackled by Fred Marion and Roland James.
00:14:26Gary Ellis is the best weapon out of the backfield
00:14:28for the Green Bay Packers.
00:14:29A decent runner, a superior pass receiver
00:14:32out of the backfield
00:14:33that time Dickey utilized him for the first down.
00:14:37Now, on the pass to Phillip Epps,
00:14:39it was a judgment by the official
00:14:41that Epps was out of bounds when he made the reception.
00:14:43That's why it was called incomplete.
00:14:45But now the Packers are on the move.
00:14:46They have a first down.
00:14:50A handoff goes up the middle to the right side.
00:14:53Jesse Clark.
00:14:55Tackle is made by Toby Williams,
00:14:57and we're seeing just the opposite of the Packers
00:14:59from an offensive standpoint now, John,
00:15:01as opposed to the first time they had the ball.
00:15:02Exactly right. They're passing the ball,
00:15:04and this is a situation, a classic example
00:15:06of what has happened in football these days
00:15:08where the pass starts to set up the run.
00:15:10The Packers do not have a good running game.
00:15:12Look at this.
00:15:13New York Giants over Philadelphia 14 to nothing.
00:15:15People expected that.
00:15:16Tampa Bay leading Chicago.
00:15:18That's a surprise.
00:15:19And San Francisco over Minnesota.
00:15:21Not a surprise there.
00:15:25Second and four for the Packers.
00:15:28Handoff to Gary Ellis.
00:15:32Flag is down.
00:15:33It looked like it may be a face mask penalty
00:15:36as the Patriots coming up from the secondary
00:15:38were just swarming around Ellis,
00:15:39led by Roland James.
00:15:41To be honest, Jim,
00:15:42the Packers are a very below-average running team
00:15:45without Eddie Lee Ivory,
00:15:46who's out with that broken thumb.
00:15:48It was a devastating blowing.
00:15:49You heard what Forrest Gregg told us yesterday.
00:15:51Face mask, number 38, defense, first down.
00:15:56Eddie Lee Ivory is the only guy
00:15:58that can really make things happen.
00:15:59Take a look at it right there.
00:16:00Incidental grabs on, let's go.
00:16:02That's why it was incidental.
00:16:05But the penalty is there.
00:16:08But the penalty gives the Packers a first down
00:16:12at the Patriots' 17-yard line.
00:16:155.26 left to go on the first period.
00:16:19New England leading the Packers 7-0
00:16:22on an 11-yard touchdown run by Tony Collins.
00:16:38Handoff goes off to Jesse Clark at the middle.
00:16:40He's tackled by Ken Simms.
00:16:45Kenneth Simms, a fourth-year man
00:16:47out of the University of Texas,
00:16:48who quite frankly has been having his share of controversy
00:16:52since coming to New England.
00:16:53He calls himself Game Day.
00:16:56And he told us yesterday,
00:16:57this is going to be his year.
00:16:59He's going to quit talking so much
00:17:01and let his actions on the field
00:17:03do the speaking for him.
00:17:08No pick-up on the play.
00:17:09Still second and 10.
00:17:10Harlan Huck will be in the backfield for Green Bay.
00:17:17Dickey throwing down the middle.
00:17:18Intended for Kaufman.
00:17:19Almost intercepted.
00:17:21I am so surprised to see Dickey do that.
00:17:23He's such a veteran-experienced quarterback.
00:17:25They were double-teaming Kaufman.
00:17:27They had single coverage on the outside
00:17:30on both Epps and Lofton.
00:17:31He had a shot going outside.
00:17:33Instead, he throws down the middle
00:17:35and the ball is almost intercepted right there
00:17:37by Roland James, number 38.
00:17:39Instead, he just drops the ball.
00:17:40He had one-on-one on the outside.
00:17:42I'd look for him to come back that direction
00:17:44to Lofton or Epps.
00:17:48Being the veteran that he is
00:17:49and with all the experience that he has on the field,
00:17:51you would certainly think so.
00:17:52The Packers have three wide receivers in them.
00:17:56Third down and 10.
00:18:06Dropped by Andre Tippett.
00:18:11And you would say to yourself,
00:18:12who else?
00:18:13Andre Tippett last year, 18-and-a-half sacks.
00:18:16He's a down lineman on the pass rush.
00:18:19Take a look at him right here, Andre Tippett.
00:18:21Left side of your screen,
00:18:22he'll be coming, number 56,
00:18:23gets away from the blocker.
00:18:24It's that mismatch.
00:18:25A smaller linebacker on a big offensive lineman,
00:18:28Carl Swanky.
00:18:29Swanky couldn't handle him.
00:18:30Thus, the second down and 10.
00:18:32And that forces a field goal situation for the Packers.
00:18:35Al Del Greco in.
00:18:37The ball will be spotted at the 30,
00:18:39so it will be a 40-yard attempt.
00:18:47And it's blocked.
00:18:52And there's a flag on the play.
00:18:55Blocked by Julius Adams.
00:18:57Holding against New England.
00:18:58Holding!
00:18:59Number 60,
00:19:00conference,
00:19:01big time.
00:19:05And now Forrest Briggs in.
00:19:08And so the Patriots take over
00:19:09at the original line of scrimmage,
00:19:11which is at the 22-yard line,
00:19:12first and 10.
00:19:17He's in back to pass.
00:19:19Complete to Lynn Dawson.
00:19:22And the Patriots take over
00:19:23at the original line of scrimmage.
00:19:26Complete to Lynn Dawson.
00:19:30First contact for Green Bay
00:19:31is made by John Anderson.
00:19:37And you get a feeling of growth
00:19:39when you watch Tony Eason,
00:19:41that he's growing,
00:19:42that he's more mobile,
00:19:43that his drop,
00:19:44if you look closely,
00:19:45last year,
00:19:46he was a quarterback
00:19:47who dropped back,
00:19:48backpedaled.
00:19:49This year,
00:19:50he's turning around
00:19:51and getting back quicker,
00:19:52and that gives him more time
00:19:53to look downfield
00:19:55Big time finding Dawson
00:19:56enough yards for the first down.
00:20:01Inside handoff to Craig James.
00:20:06James bumped out of bounds
00:20:07by Tim Lewis.
00:20:10You know,
00:20:11Craig James reminds me
00:20:12of he's playing fullback.
00:20:13He's more of a halfback type.
00:20:14Their offense is more
00:20:15of two halfbacks,
00:20:17but he's kind of like
00:20:18a Franco Harris type of fullback.
00:20:20More of a running fullback
00:20:21than a blocking fullback.
00:20:25Forrest Gregg has always had a
00:20:27direct impact on the teams
00:20:28that he's coached,
00:20:29especially in his second year there.
00:20:31Look at him at Cleveland,
00:20:323-11 to 9-5,
00:20:33and it's Cincinnati
00:20:34who went from 6-10 to 12-4
00:20:36and to the Super Bowl.
00:20:38And so this is the second year
00:20:39with him at Green Bay.
00:20:41And the pressure is on
00:20:42by the Packers up front,
00:20:43but it's still complete.
00:20:45Cedric Jones as a receiver.
00:20:47Excellent job then by Tony Eason
00:20:49getting the ball away.
00:20:50No doubt about it.
00:20:51He had 10 yards
00:20:53No doubt about it.
00:20:54He had tremendous pressure
00:20:55from Alfonso Carrick,
00:20:56the number 76,
00:20:57right up the middle.
00:20:58But Jones did a fine job
00:21:00reading the blitz,
00:21:02and Eason got rid of the ball.
00:21:03Take a look at it right here.
00:21:04He's just coming over
00:21:05the middle underneath,
00:21:06and good thing he was
00:21:07looking right now
00:21:08because Eason had to
00:21:09throw the ball.
00:21:11And the defender was
00:21:12too loose on him also.
00:21:13In that situation,
00:21:14where you know you have pressure,
00:21:15you've got to get a little
00:21:16tighter on the receiver.
00:21:17Well, I think they're a little
00:21:18afraid of his speed,
00:21:19and that's why they're
00:21:20taking advantage of
00:21:21the underneath passers.
00:21:22Defensive backs can't
00:21:23play with fear.
00:21:24You know that.
00:21:27They have to get rid of
00:21:28that element, or they'll
00:21:29be blown out here
00:21:30real early.
00:21:32First and 10.
00:21:33The toss back goes to James again,
00:21:34trying to get to the outside.
00:21:37Goes out of bounds
00:21:38at about the 48-yard line.
00:21:39Knocked out of bounds there
00:21:40by Mark Murphy and Randy Scott.
00:21:43You know, Forrest, Greg,
00:21:44last week was very unhappy
00:21:45the way his team...
00:21:48We'll get into it in a minute.
00:21:49Look at Atlanta, 7-0 over
00:21:50Detroit in the first quarter.
00:21:51And here, Pittsburgh
00:21:52leading Indianapolis.
00:21:54It is Kansas City
00:21:55over New Orleans.
00:22:00And Seattle over Cincinnati.
00:22:01All of those are
00:22:02first-quarter scores.
00:22:03All of those, 7-0.
00:22:05I want to pick up
00:22:06on Forrest, Greg,
00:22:07what he told us about
00:22:08last week's Packer game
00:22:09against the Jets,
00:22:10right after this play, Chuck.
00:22:12It is 2nd and 7.
00:22:14Here's Easton
00:22:15back to pass again.
00:22:17It's complete to Tony Collins
00:22:18out of the backfield.
00:22:20Collins gets to the 45-yard line
00:22:22for Green Bay tackle
00:22:23made by Tim Lewis.
00:22:24And you see the poor tackling
00:22:25by Green Bay.
00:22:26Last week, the Green Bay defense
00:22:27looked like chicken soup
00:22:29against the Jets.
00:22:30They were absolutely horrible.
00:22:31And Forrest, Greg,
00:22:32told them that.
00:22:33That's why I expected them today
00:22:34to come out with
00:22:35a little more fire.
00:22:36They haven't.
00:22:37Jim, they were terrible
00:22:38last week.
00:22:39And they're picking up
00:22:40where they left off.
00:22:41They're not tackling.
00:22:42They're not hitting.
00:22:43They're not aggressive.
00:22:44And they're doing
00:22:45just the opposite of what
00:22:46all the players were telling us
00:22:47that Forrest, Greg,
00:22:48wants out of his team.
00:22:49And that is tough,
00:22:50rough, aggressive people.
00:22:51Both on offense and defense.
00:22:52And he also said,
00:22:53you'll either play
00:22:54or you won't be here.
00:22:59Well, the Packers
00:23:00had better get going real quick.
00:23:01Even though they trail 7-0,
00:23:03the Patriots are on the move.
00:23:05Robert Weathers.
00:23:10Weathers bumped out of bounds
00:23:11by Tim Lewis and Tom Flynn.
00:23:13And it appears to me
00:23:15like that New England
00:23:16is just saying,
00:23:17hey, we're just going to
00:23:18let it all hang out.
00:23:19And it was like
00:23:20Andre Tippett told us yesterday.
00:23:21He said, the opening game
00:23:22of the season
00:23:23sets the tone
00:23:24for the rest of the year.
00:23:25And Robert Weathers,
00:23:26you saw his graphic there,
00:23:27over five yards a carry
00:23:28is a good one.
00:23:29He's a combination
00:23:30of Tony Collins' speed
00:23:31and Craig James'
00:23:32cutting ability and power.
00:23:34Now, Mosey Tutupu
00:23:36is in the backfield now
00:23:37with Weathers.
00:23:38Tutupu always comes in
00:23:39in short yardage situations.
00:23:40Second and three
00:23:41for New England.
00:23:44And Tutupu gets the call.
00:23:49And he gets the first down.
00:23:51Tackled by John Anderson
00:23:52and Tom Flynn.
00:23:53Jim, how in the world
00:23:54can a makeshift offensive line
00:23:56without their star player
00:23:57John Hanna
00:23:58wipe out the entire left side
00:24:01of the defensive line
00:24:02of the Green Bay Packers?
00:24:04In that time,
00:24:05that's exactly what they did.
00:24:06Mosey cut back
00:24:07and got good yardage.
00:24:08Well, you know,
00:24:09sometimes when you lose
00:24:11your leader up front
00:24:12like a John Hanna
00:24:13for the Patriots,
00:24:14it makes you come together
00:24:15a little bit more.
00:24:16You have to dig down
00:24:17a little bit deeper.
00:24:18And that's what the Patriots
00:24:19are doing right now.
00:24:20First and ten.
00:24:21Ball at the thirty-one
00:24:22of Green Bay.
00:24:26Tutupu again.
00:24:30Tutupu gets just inside
00:24:31the thirty-yard line
00:24:32before he's tackled
00:24:33by Guy Prather
00:24:34who's replacing Mike Douglas
00:24:35and Ezra Johnson.
00:24:39And last week
00:24:40against the Jets,
00:24:41Freeman McNeil had over
00:24:42a hundred yards
00:24:43and a half of play
00:24:44as the Jets just ran
00:24:45right through
00:24:46a Green Bay defense.
00:24:47And again today,
00:24:48they're doing it well.
00:24:49They're running,
00:24:50they're passing,
00:24:51and they're just slicing
00:24:52right through
00:24:53a Green Bay defense.
00:24:54And that is probably
00:24:55or that is the last play
00:24:56of the first period.
00:24:57Wow.
00:24:58Five for five,
00:24:59sixty-three yards.
00:25:00He's perfect so far.
00:25:10Play action pass.
00:25:13The ball is knocked down
00:25:14by Prather
00:25:15to replace Mike Douglas.
00:25:16It was intended
00:25:17for Derek Ramsey.
00:25:22That was a good play
00:25:23by Prather,
00:25:24number fifty-one
00:25:25covering Ramsey.
00:25:26Of course, Ramsey is the
00:25:27tight end who can
00:25:28catch the ball.
00:25:29Watch him right here.
00:25:30He just gets his hand
00:25:31up on the ball
00:25:32and keeps groping
00:25:33at the receiver
00:25:34so that he can't
00:25:35pull it in,
00:25:36pulls that arm away
00:25:37incompletely.
00:25:38So it'll be a third
00:25:39down and eight
00:25:40for the Patriots.
00:25:41The ball at the
00:25:42twenty-nine yard line
00:25:43of Green Bay.
00:25:44The Patriots now have
00:25:45five defensive backs in
00:25:48and the Patriots have
00:25:49three wide receivers.
00:25:51Stephan Starring
00:25:52into the lineup now
00:25:53for New England
00:25:54as they are from
00:25:55the shotgun formation.
00:26:03Pressure's on.
00:26:06Eason is finally
00:26:07sacked by Alfonso Carricker.
00:26:10One of the problems
00:26:11Eason had last year
00:26:12in the last four games
00:26:13in the time that
00:26:14the Patriots folded off
00:26:15and lost three or four
00:26:16was getting sacked.
00:26:17He was sacked
00:26:18thirty times
00:26:19because of the
00:26:20offensive screen.
00:26:21Here, right here,
00:26:22Ezra Johnson,
00:26:23the best pass rusher
00:26:24for the Packers,
00:26:25just gets by his man.
00:26:26Finally,
00:26:27right there,
00:26:28Carricker brings
00:26:29Eason down for the sack.
00:26:30But that has been
00:26:31a problem for the Patriots.
00:26:32They think they've
00:26:33corrected it.
00:26:35Not that time, though.
00:26:36Well, Carricker,
00:26:37who is a player
00:26:38who did not have
00:26:39a good ball game
00:26:40last week against the Jets,
00:26:41and I'm sure he's out
00:26:42to really improve on that
00:26:43this week.
00:26:45Rich Camarillo
00:26:47in to punt for
00:26:48New England.
00:26:49Walt Stanley
00:26:50is back to the C
00:26:51beat for Green Bay.
00:26:52He's at the 10-yard line.
00:27:00Over Stanley's head
00:27:01into the end zone
00:27:02for a touchback.
00:27:03The ball will come out
00:27:04to the 20-yard line.
00:27:05That's where the Packers
00:27:06will take over
00:27:07first and 10.
00:27:08The tackle,
00:27:09this is only the second game
00:27:10in his career
00:27:11that he's had that position.
00:27:18Lynn Dickey,
00:27:19a quarterback for Green Bay.
00:27:22There's a fumble
00:27:23in the backfield
00:27:24by the Packers
00:27:25and a mad scramble.
00:27:28The handoff
00:27:29was to Gary Ellis.
00:27:34And we'll just wait
00:27:35for referee Bob McElwee
00:27:36and the rest of his officials
00:27:38to sort everything out.
00:27:39And it's a mad scramble.
00:27:41And the Pacers signal
00:27:42they have the ball
00:27:43and they do.
00:27:49You know,
00:27:50one of the new rules this year,
00:27:51John,
00:27:52is on the fumbles.
00:27:53The last guy to come up
00:27:54with the ball
00:27:55is that's the team
00:27:56that gets possession of it.
00:27:57And Fred Marion
00:27:58was at the bottom
00:27:59of that pile
00:28:00groping for the ball
00:28:01and eventually came up with it.
00:28:02Let's take another look at it.
00:28:03Lofton never really
00:28:04got the handoff.
00:28:05See him right there?
00:28:06It's sort of a bad handoff
00:28:07underneath to number 31,
00:28:08Gary Ellis
00:28:09The ball's just here
00:28:10right there under the feet.
00:28:11And then it's just a battle.
00:28:12Who wants it?
00:28:13And you see right there,
00:28:1431, Marion comes in late
00:28:15and drags the ball
00:28:16away from the Pacers.
00:28:17Well, like we said,
00:28:18the new rule,
00:28:19whoever comes up
00:28:20with the ball last,
00:28:21unlike previous years,
00:28:22sometimes the ball
00:28:23is awarded earlier.
00:28:24But this particular year,
00:28:25the Patriots get it.
00:28:26And here's Tony Collins
00:28:27trying to get to the outside.
00:28:29First contact
00:28:30made by George Cumby.
00:28:37The Patriots now
00:28:38have a golden opportunity
00:28:40here to really
00:28:42put a lot of points
00:28:43on the board.
00:28:44Collins leads.
00:28:45They lead the ballgame
00:28:46now 7-0.
00:28:47But we're seeing
00:28:48the kinds of mistakes
00:28:49by the Pacers
00:28:50that we know
00:28:51that Forrest Gregg
00:28:52just absolutely hates to see.
00:28:54And he was fearful
00:28:55of seeing coming
00:28:56into the ballgame.
00:29:05He's in back to pass.
00:29:06Going for Greg Hawthorne.
00:29:07He gets it at the 5-yard line,
00:29:08but he's knocked back
00:29:09to about the 9-yard line.
00:29:16So Greg Hawthorne
00:29:17comes off the bench
00:29:18and does an excellent job.
00:29:19Greg, how do you remember?
00:29:20Look at how deep
00:29:21they are down here.
00:29:22Defensive back
00:29:23has no worries
00:29:24about a receiver running by him.
00:29:25Why would you play off
00:29:26that much?
00:29:27Hawthorne just
00:29:28underneath
00:29:29and makes the reception
00:29:30right there.
00:29:31Well, what happened is
00:29:32you have Mark Murphy,
00:29:33who's a safety,
00:29:34and he's playing out
00:29:35on a wide receiver
00:29:36and a safety
00:29:37is very uncomfortable
00:29:38playing on the wide.
00:29:39He's out of position out there
00:29:40and that's why
00:29:41he was so far back.
00:29:44Hurston Dole,
00:29:45ball at the 8-yard line.
00:29:48Hand off to Collins again.
00:29:49Oh, he's hit in the backfield.
00:29:52Randy Scott.
00:29:56But it's interesting
00:29:57when you talk to
00:29:58number 33, Tony Collins,
00:29:59he talks about being
00:30:00reborn this year
00:30:01because last year
00:30:02he sat down.
00:30:03You remember Collins
00:30:04in 1983
00:30:06had over 1,000 yards
00:30:07for the Patriots.
00:30:08He's hoping to get
00:30:09round back into that
00:30:10kind of form this year
00:30:11after sitting for the
00:30:12last eight games of the year
00:30:13in the one-back offense.
00:30:15Well, he feels
00:30:16more comfortable now
00:30:17and he feels actually
00:30:18more a part of the team.
00:30:19He was left out last year.
00:30:20Certainly was.
00:30:21Had a difference of opinion
00:30:22with the previous
00:30:23coaching staff.
00:30:25But he says this year
00:30:26he's ready to regroup
00:30:27and return.
00:30:29Second and 11.
00:30:31Flags on the play.
00:30:32And the Packers are
00:30:33pointing to the Patriots
00:30:34as illegal motion.
00:30:38On the quarterback.
00:30:39That's what Donnie Humphrey
00:30:40number 79 was saying.
00:30:41He said, hey,
00:30:42quarterback move.
00:30:43Look, it wasn't me.
00:30:47And he was right.
00:30:48So the Packers
00:30:49will accept the penalty.
00:30:53But one of the things
00:30:54about accepting the penalty
00:30:55is it gives the Patriots
00:30:57a little more room
00:30:58to work with
00:30:59in their passing game.
00:31:00Exactly.
00:31:01When you have a guy
00:31:02like Irvin Fryer,
00:31:03you might want that
00:31:04little bit of extra room
00:31:05so he can maneuver.
00:31:10Old number 82.
00:31:11Raymond Berry
00:31:12against old number 75.
00:31:13Forrest Gray.
00:31:14First time
00:31:15they're squaring off
00:31:16as head coaches.
00:31:20And there is another.
00:31:21Not another.
00:31:22Oh, it was almost
00:31:23a penalty.
00:31:24The referee started
00:31:25to call a penalty
00:31:26but he stopped
00:31:27as Tony Eason
00:31:28called a timeout.
00:31:29Wise move on Eason's part.
00:31:30Just called a timeout.
00:31:32The second and goal
00:31:33from the 16-yard line
00:31:34for New England.
00:31:37Here's part of the motion.
00:31:41Pass intended
00:31:42for Cedric Jones
00:31:43covering on the plate
00:31:44was Tim Lewis.
00:31:48That's what we talked about.
00:31:49They get the penalty
00:31:50and it gives them
00:31:51a little more room
00:31:52to maneuver with
00:31:53as far as their
00:31:54passing game is concerned.
00:31:55And it's just an example
00:31:56of Eason's philosophy.
00:31:57He says,
00:31:58I'll take the high percentage.
00:32:00Steve Grogan
00:32:01is signaling a play.
00:32:02Interesting.
00:32:03Very allowed the quarterbacks
00:32:04to make up their own singles.
00:32:08And those two
00:32:09working quite well
00:32:10together now.
00:32:12Grogan and
00:32:13Tony Eason.
00:32:15Eason now 6 of 8
00:32:16for 71 yards.
00:32:18Third and goal
00:32:19while at the 16-yard line
00:32:20of Green Bay.
00:32:21Six defensive backs
00:32:22in now for the Packers.
00:32:24Here's Eason to pass.
00:32:27Intended for Hawthorne
00:32:28who wasn't looking.
00:32:32John Anderson
00:32:33defending for Green Bay.
00:32:35Hawthorne also knew
00:32:36he was going to be clocked.
00:32:37Watch.
00:32:38Take a look at it right here.
00:32:39The cornerback
00:32:40gives him a little bump,
00:32:41lets him go
00:32:42because they're playing his own.
00:32:43Right here the ball's coming.
00:32:44Hawthorne does not get
00:32:45his head around
00:32:46soon enough
00:32:47and his hand's up.
00:32:48If you snap that head around
00:32:49your hand's up
00:32:50and you're out.
00:32:51If you snap that head around
00:32:52your hand's naturally
00:32:53come up.
00:32:54Hawthorne
00:32:55who used to be a running back
00:32:56at Pittsburgh
00:32:57not quick enough
00:32:58with his hands.
00:32:59And with the incomplete
00:33:00pass
00:33:01the Patriots
00:33:02will now
00:33:03send in Tony Franklin
00:33:04to attempt a field goal.
00:33:05The ball will be placed
00:33:06at the 24-yard line
00:33:08so it'll be a 34-yard attempt.
00:33:13With Eason holding.
00:33:22The 34-yard
00:33:23field goal attempt
00:33:24by Tony Franklin
00:33:25is good.
00:33:28So the Patriots
00:33:29capitalize on
00:33:31Franklin in to kick off
00:33:32now for New England.
00:33:34Walt Stanley
00:33:35and Gary Ellison
00:33:37back to receive.
00:33:43This is Ellison
00:33:44at the 10-yard line.
00:33:51Ellison goes out of bounds
00:33:52at about the 22-yard line.
00:33:54Tackle there made by
00:33:55Ed Williams.
00:33:56Coming up next
00:33:57Men's Singles Finals
00:33:58at the U.S. Open
00:33:59Tennis Championships.
00:34:00Yvonne Lindell
00:34:01going against John McEnroe.
00:34:02Ooh that should be a good one.
00:34:03It's the best against the best.
00:34:05The number two seed Lindell
00:34:06against the number one seed
00:34:07John McEnroe.
00:34:08I have to wonder
00:34:09if McEnroe will be
00:34:10a little drained
00:34:11after playing
00:34:12a five set match yesterday
00:34:13in that 100 plus degree heat.
00:34:16But you saw him
00:34:17playing last week.
00:34:18He's playing
00:34:19despite some close calls
00:34:20he's playing some
00:34:21of the best tennis
00:34:22of his career.
00:34:26Here's Dickey
00:34:27as the Packers
00:34:28are not playing
00:34:29some of their best football
00:34:30but the Patriots are.
00:34:32There he is again.
00:34:33Andre Piffitt
00:34:35dropping Dickey
00:34:36back at about
00:34:37the 10-yard line.
00:34:38Lynn Dickey
00:34:39is not a mobile
00:34:40roll right type
00:34:41of quarterback.
00:34:42He has no mobility.
00:34:43He was injured last week.
00:34:44He had that
00:34:45stretched spinal cord
00:34:46and he's been very sore.
00:34:47Take a look at it right here.
00:34:48Here it's a half roll.
00:34:49He's obviously
00:34:50trying to get away
00:34:51from the rush
00:34:52but he doesn't have mobility
00:34:53and Piffitt and company
00:34:54are all over him.
00:34:55He has no chance
00:34:56to throw the ball.
00:34:57I'm surprised
00:34:58to see that.
00:34:59We're told that
00:35:00Mike Douglas has a
00:35:01fractured clavicle
00:35:02and he will not return.
00:35:04And that's the second
00:35:05sack for Piffitt.
00:35:08Mike Douglas is out.
00:35:10Second and 21
00:35:11for Green Bay
00:35:12at their own
00:35:1311-yard line.
00:35:16Hand off to Jesse Clark.
00:35:20And he's hit first
00:35:21by the veteran
00:35:22Steve Nelson.
00:35:23Andre Piffitt
00:35:24also in on the tackle.
00:35:28Piffitt's all over the field
00:35:29in the rush field.
00:35:30Take a look at it
00:35:31from the left side.
00:35:32Offensive line
00:35:33of the Packers
00:35:34not able to deal.
00:35:35You see the foot
00:35:36pulling out here.
00:35:37Piffitt just plays
00:35:38off the block.
00:35:39He's in the action
00:35:40along with Steve Nelson
00:35:41and company.
00:35:42Linebacks are just too quick
00:35:43for that offensive line
00:35:44pulling out for the Packers.
00:35:47The Patriots
00:35:48potentially
00:35:49have one of the better
00:35:50linebacking groups
00:35:51in the league
00:35:52and they are certainly
00:35:53showing it
00:35:54in the first half
00:35:55of this ballgame.
00:35:56Third and 24.
00:36:02The Blitz is on.
00:36:03Safety for New England.
00:36:06Don Fleckman
00:36:08Blitzing linebacker
00:36:09gets the safety.
00:36:19Take a look
00:36:20at the right side
00:36:21of your screen.
00:36:22You'll see number 55
00:36:23get off the block
00:36:24of number 70
00:36:25Keith Uecker
00:36:26and make the sack.
00:36:27And that patched up
00:36:28offensive line
00:36:29of the Green Bay Packers
00:36:30having their problems
00:36:31as is Lynn Dickey.
00:36:33And I can't help
00:36:34but wonder
00:36:35if the physical problems
00:36:36that Dickey
00:36:37has had
00:36:38throughout the course
00:36:39of his career
00:36:40and last week
00:36:41against the Jets
00:36:42if it's not really
00:36:43taking up
00:36:44a lot of space
00:36:45on the field
00:36:46for the Jets
00:36:47if it's not really
00:36:48taking a big effect
00:36:49on him now.
00:36:50Farr has said
00:36:51that Lynn Dickey
00:36:52was okay
00:36:53that there was no
00:36:54structural damage
00:36:55but that doesn't mean
00:36:56that he isn't sore
00:36:57he isn't feeling
00:36:58the effects
00:36:59of that hit
00:37:00that the Jets
00:37:01put on him last week.
00:37:02That's New England's
00:37:03third sack
00:37:04of the afternoon.
00:37:05All three
00:37:06by their linebackers
00:37:07two by Andre Tippett.
00:37:10So now
00:37:11Joe Prokop
00:37:12is in to punt
00:37:13from the 20 yard line
00:37:14of Green Bay.
00:37:17And Irving Frye
00:37:18is back to receive
00:37:19for the Patriots.
00:37:34And he fumbles it all.
00:37:35Matt Scramble
00:37:36on the field.
00:37:47And Forrest is just
00:37:48looking for any kind
00:37:49of break right now.
00:37:50I was just going to say
00:37:51that take a look at it again.
00:37:52Frye with that great speed
00:37:53breaks through the pack
00:37:54right there.
00:37:55Looks like he might have
00:37:56some running room
00:37:57and then just loses the ball
00:37:58as he's carrying
00:37:59like a loaf of bread.
00:38:00It goes up in the air
00:38:01and is finally recovered
00:38:02by Gary Hayes
00:38:03number 27
00:38:04for the Packers.
00:38:06One of the few
00:38:07good things
00:38:08that have happened
00:38:09to the Packers
00:38:10this afternoon
00:38:11they have the ball
00:38:12at the Patriot
00:38:1342 yard line.
00:38:14They needed that break
00:38:15and they need
00:38:16the momentum
00:38:17that they're in.
00:38:18They need momentum
00:38:19to get back on their side.
00:38:20And they also need
00:38:21to get on the scoreboard.
00:38:2210-10 left to go
00:38:23on the first half.
00:38:28Good protection
00:38:29across the middle.
00:38:30And a second.
00:38:32The ball is picked up
00:38:33by Larry McGrew
00:38:34but there is a flag
00:38:35on the plate.
00:38:41The preliminary call
00:38:42is Holden
00:38:43against the Packers.
00:38:46Holden.
00:38:47Number 68.
00:38:48Offense.
00:38:49Penalties declined.
00:38:50First down.
00:38:57A totally frustrated
00:38:58Lynn Dickey
00:38:59who's picked off
00:39:00by Donnie Blackmon.
00:39:02First and 10
00:39:03for New England.
00:39:04Tony Eason
00:39:05still a quarterback.
00:39:08And up
00:39:09the middle.
00:39:10Craig James
00:39:11is the ball carrier.
00:39:12Tackle made by John Anderson.
00:39:14Anderson.
00:39:15One of the
00:39:16young
00:39:17Green Bay Packer
00:39:18linebackers
00:39:19who've really been together
00:39:20for a long time now.
00:39:21But their
00:39:22disadvantage
00:39:23as far as they're concerned
00:39:24is that they're so small.
00:39:25Offensive linemen
00:39:26really trying to take advantage
00:39:27of that.
00:39:31Is Eason
00:39:32back to pass?
00:39:33Eason.
00:39:34Back to pass.
00:39:35Eason.
00:39:36Back to pass.
00:39:37Eason.
00:39:38Back to pass.
00:39:39Eason.
00:39:40Back to pass.
00:39:41Eason.
00:39:42Back to pass.
00:39:43Eason.
00:39:44Back to pass.
00:39:45Looks all over the field.
00:39:46Finally hits
00:39:47Lynn Dawson.
00:39:48Good job of scanning
00:39:49the entire field
00:39:50in by Tony Eason.
00:39:51Looking right to left.
00:39:52Finally hitting Dawson
00:39:53across the middle.
00:39:54Also Jim
00:39:55the absence of
00:39:56Mad Dog Douglas
00:39:57number 53
00:39:58who would have been
00:39:59on the right side.
00:40:00What's number 51?
00:40:01Guy Prather
00:40:02comes in.
00:40:03He's blocked
00:40:04easily right there
00:40:05by Weathers.
00:40:06And that gives Eason
00:40:07plenty of time.
00:40:08See the left side
00:40:09of your screen?
00:40:10Prather number 51
00:40:11back here.
00:40:12He's a better sacker.
00:40:13He might have put pressure
00:40:14on Eason.
00:40:16First down for New England
00:40:18at their 46 yard line.
00:40:23Play action pass.
00:40:26Complete to Cedric Jones.
00:40:34Doesn't make any difference
00:40:36as far as him losing his shoe.
00:40:37He'll take that
00:40:38anytime he can.
00:40:39It was completed
00:40:40by Clarence Withers
00:40:41at number 82.
00:40:42Clarence Withers.
00:40:46Now the Patriots
00:40:47as you look at them
00:40:48from an offensive standpoint
00:40:49they have a lot of weapons.
00:40:50John they can put
00:40:51a lot of different people
00:40:52in the ball game
00:40:53and they can do
00:40:54just about anything they want
00:40:55with the type of people
00:40:56they have.
00:40:57And if you want to be
00:40:58a quarterback in the NFL
00:40:59here take a look
00:41:00at what happens to Eason
00:41:01when he throws that ball.
00:41:02Robert Brown.
00:41:04Second and one.
00:41:06Ball at the Green Bay
00:41:0745 yard line.
00:41:11That's Robert Withers
00:41:12up the middle.
00:41:13And it looks like he has
00:41:14enough yardage
00:41:15for the first down.
00:41:18So the Patriots
00:41:19leading the Packers here
00:41:2010 to nothing.
00:41:21And it is Tampa Bay
00:41:22over Chicago.
00:41:23Kind of a surprise there
00:41:2421 to 7.
00:41:25St. Louis leading Cleveland
00:41:26in the second quarter.
00:41:28It is Atlanta over Detroit
00:41:29by 7 in the second quarter.
00:41:32Pittsburgh leading
00:41:33Indianapolis 14 to 3.
00:41:35Kansas City over New Orleans
00:41:36by 10.
00:41:37Seattle leading Cincinnati
00:41:38in the second quarter.
00:41:44First and 10
00:41:45for New England.
00:41:52Here comes the pressure.
00:41:55And you can see
00:41:56the Packers now
00:41:57hollering and screaming
00:41:58for intentional grounding.
00:42:00But I think what's
00:42:01going to happen is
00:42:02referee Bob McKelvey
00:42:03is going to rule
00:42:04that Eason is going
00:42:05to rule that Eason
00:42:06was in the grasp
00:42:07of Mike Butler
00:42:08and that's where
00:42:09he will be down.
00:42:11And that rule
00:42:12to clarify it
00:42:13one more time
00:42:14is grasp and control.
00:42:15Take a look at it again folks.
00:42:16Trying to protect
00:42:17the quarterback.
00:42:18See him right there.
00:42:19He's in the grasp.
00:42:20He's in the control
00:42:21of number 77 Butler.
00:42:22The whistle blew
00:42:23and that was it.
00:42:25Probably better for Eason
00:42:26because they might have
00:42:27called that intentional grounding.
00:42:29It's a loss of 14 yards.
00:42:32So it will be
00:42:33second and 24.
00:42:35Six minutes and 55 seconds
00:42:36left to go in the first half.
00:42:38Shotgun.
00:42:39Something new for the Patriots.
00:42:40They did not use it last year.
00:42:49Screen pass.
00:42:50And there is Guy Prowder
00:42:51there again
00:42:52tackling Craig James.
00:42:55And someone has to
00:42:56pick up the momentum
00:42:57and the tempo
00:42:58for the Green Bay Packers.
00:42:59Mike Douglas
00:43:00is the man who told us
00:43:01we're not going to be
00:43:02firing blanks today.
00:43:03He's gone.
00:43:04And Craig James
00:43:05makes a good play right there.
00:43:06Comes up with another loss.
00:43:08But someone has to
00:43:09pick up this team.
00:43:10The defense has been flat.
00:43:11They've had the aggressiveness
00:43:12of a prune.
00:43:14And you see where they're
00:43:15trying to get a little
00:43:16excited on the field.
00:43:17Trying to instigate
00:43:18some things.
00:43:19Trying to create
00:43:20friction out on the field.
00:43:21Trying to create
00:43:22really the snowball effect.
00:43:26Third and 32.
00:43:31Again from the shotgun.
00:43:35Across the middle.
00:43:36Complete to Tony Collins.
00:43:38But there is a flag
00:43:39on the plate.
00:43:41The flag is in the
00:43:42backfield of the Patriots.
00:43:44Collins is tackled
00:43:45by Mark Murphy.
00:43:47But the preliminary call
00:43:48is holding against Green
00:43:49against the Red
00:43:50of New England.
00:43:51And you can see Forrest saying
00:43:52yes yes we'll take
00:43:53anything right now
00:43:54that's in our favor.
00:43:55It was third and 32.
00:43:56So move him back
00:43:57some more.
00:43:58Force him to punt.
00:43:59We'll take a shot
00:44:00at him throwing
00:44:01the green ball.
00:44:02Force him to punt.
00:44:03We'll take a shot
00:44:04at him throwing the ball
00:44:05up and us intercepting him.
00:44:15Number 76.
00:44:16Offense.
00:44:18Still third down.
00:44:19That shot was against
00:44:20Brian Holloway.
00:44:26You know with the way
00:44:27things are going
00:44:28for the Packers
00:44:29so far this afternoon.
00:44:30They really should
00:44:31take anything that
00:44:32that's a positive
00:44:33effect on them.
00:44:34You know just try and
00:44:35push the Patriots back
00:44:36as far as they can
00:44:37and take their chances
00:44:38because they haven't had
00:44:39much luck doing anything else.
00:44:40Exactly.
00:44:41The pass is complete
00:44:42so they gained about
00:44:4325 yards on that call
00:44:44by Forrest Gregg.
00:44:47Inside handoff
00:44:48to Craig James.
00:44:51The fans don't like it.
00:44:54Camarillo will have
00:44:55to come in and punt now.
00:44:56Fans may not like it
00:44:57but I think it's a wise
00:44:58situation.
00:44:59You know if you're
00:45:00going to be in this
00:45:01third and a thousand yards
00:45:02rather than fumble
00:45:03or throw it up
00:45:04and have it intercepted
00:45:05and something happens
00:45:06to you kick it away
00:45:07let your defense pray
00:45:08they've been doing a good job
00:45:09all afternoon.
00:45:12Camarillo comes in
00:45:13to punt for New England
00:45:16and Walt Stanley
00:45:18going back to receive
00:45:19for Green Bay
00:45:22at his 20 yard line.
00:45:27452 left to go
00:45:29for Green Bay.
00:45:34The Packers looking
00:45:35for some kind of spark
00:45:36to get them going
00:45:37from an offensive standpoint.
00:45:42Oh good punt.
00:45:45Stanley at the 14.
00:45:51He gets up to the
00:45:5228 yard line
00:45:53to get the Packers
00:45:54from an offensive standpoint
00:45:55on the roll here.
00:45:56Jesse Clark and Gary Ellis
00:45:57on the run.
00:46:01Play action pass.
00:46:05And it is complete
00:46:06to Philip Epps.
00:46:08Tackle there made
00:46:09by Ronnie Lippitt.
00:46:10You know it's a pleasure
00:46:11to watch the Packer
00:46:12offense when it's working
00:46:13because they are one
00:46:14of the last teams
00:46:15in the NFL
00:46:16outside of maybe
00:46:17the Raiders
00:46:18and the Miami Dolphins
00:46:19who really had that
00:46:20upfield passing game.
00:46:22Dickey has the arm
00:46:23Epps and Lofton
00:46:24have the speed to get
00:46:25downfield and make
00:46:26a play then.
00:46:27John good for 13 yards
00:46:28and a Green Bay first down.
00:46:31Harlan Huckleberry
00:46:32checks into the backfield.
00:46:36Dickey to James Lofton.
00:46:38And guess who he's
00:46:39working on Jim.
00:46:40The man we expected
00:46:41Ronnie Lippitt number 42
00:46:42covering Lofton and Epps
00:46:43and of course
00:46:44Claiborne's on the other side.
00:46:46So if you're playing
00:46:47with an all pro corner
00:46:48they're naturally
00:46:49going to pick on you
00:46:50as they do right here
00:46:51with Lofton
00:46:52running down on
00:46:53Ronnie Lippitt.
00:46:54Take a look at it
00:46:55a little play action
00:46:56fake good block right there
00:46:57Nelson doesn't get
00:46:58any penetration
00:46:59and then the ball
00:47:00is delivered.
00:47:01All right Lofton
00:47:02with a good reception
00:47:03good for 22 yards.
00:47:04Kind of surprising
00:47:05Lofton just starting
00:47:06to get into the action
00:47:07here this afternoon.
00:47:11But it is the first down
00:47:12for Green Bay.
00:47:13The talk back
00:47:14comes to Ellis.
00:47:17Ellis hit at about
00:47:18the 35 yard line
00:47:19gets down to about
00:47:20the 34 before he's
00:47:21tackled by Larry McGrew.
00:47:22I don't believe
00:47:23what I just saw.
00:47:24Number 82 just took
00:47:25Andre Tippett
00:47:26Andre Tippett just took
00:47:27Paul Kaufman
00:47:28number 82
00:47:29and flung him aside
00:47:30like he wasn't
00:47:31even standing there.
00:47:32Of course Kaufman
00:47:33not the best
00:47:34blocking tight end
00:47:35but take a look at this Jim
00:47:36this is incredible.
00:47:37Watch Tippett
00:47:38number 56
00:47:39watch how strong he is.
00:47:40He just grabs him
00:47:41and throws him aside
00:47:42to the ground.
00:47:43You know he has started
00:47:44a karate school here
00:47:45in the New England area.
00:47:46That probably has
00:47:47a lot to do with it.
00:47:48Use of leverage
00:47:49he used it that time
00:47:50right there.
00:47:5177 for Green Bay.
00:47:55It is complete
00:47:56to Kaufman
00:47:57but there's a flag
00:47:58on the plate
00:47:59as Roland James
00:48:00tackles Kaufman
00:48:01as he goes out of bounds
00:48:02at about the 7 yard line.
00:48:03And you and I
00:48:04both know what it is
00:48:05it's Paul Kaufman
00:48:06number 82
00:48:07pushing off
00:48:08number 38
00:48:09Roland James
00:48:10offensive pass
00:48:11interference.
00:48:18Number 38
00:48:19defense
00:48:20the other way around
00:48:21and you hear the fans
00:48:22I want to see that again
00:48:23because
00:48:24Roland James
00:48:25had position
00:48:26the way I saw it
00:48:27Kaufman ran into him
00:48:28the referee saw it
00:48:29the other way
00:48:30he saw James
00:48:31cutting off Kaufman
00:48:32and preventing him
00:48:33from going where he
00:48:34wanted to go.
00:48:38That was a pickup
00:48:39of 27 yards.
00:48:41So
00:48:42you know
00:48:43once again
00:48:44we're talking about
00:48:45a judgment call
00:48:46as far as officials
00:48:47are concerned
00:48:48and I'm wondering
00:48:49if they aren't thinking
00:48:50well Kaufman had a right
00:48:51to get to the goal.
00:48:52They ruled that
00:48:53it is a judgment call
00:48:54I thought Kaufman
00:48:55pushed off
00:48:56first and goal
00:48:57for Green Bay
00:48:58while at the 7 yard line
00:48:59of New England.
00:49:05Across the middle
00:49:06Dickey throws
00:49:07and it is incomplete
00:49:08intended for Kaufman
00:49:09but another flag
00:49:10on the play.
00:49:12Steve Nelson
00:49:13number 57
00:49:14was all over Kaufman
00:49:15we'll see if that's
00:49:16the call right here
00:49:17see if two in a row
00:49:18go the Packers direction.
00:49:23Pass interference
00:49:24number 31
00:49:26defense
00:49:27first down.
00:49:28They called it on
00:49:29Fred Marion
00:49:30number 31.
00:49:32Who now leaves
00:49:33the ball game.
00:49:34So
00:49:35we'll take a look
00:49:36at it again.
00:49:37Yeah see him
00:49:38across the field
00:49:39Steve Nelson there
00:49:40on Kaufman
00:49:41gets his hand on him
00:49:42and grabs his jersey
00:49:43that could have easily
00:49:44been the penalty
00:49:45instead they called it
00:49:46on Fred Marion
00:49:47which was a mistake
00:49:48I think.
00:49:49They meant to call it
00:49:50on 57.
00:49:51Confusing to get
00:49:52kind of strange
00:49:53to get 31 and 57
00:49:54confused.
00:49:56Person to go
00:49:57ball at the one yard line.
00:50:01Ellis.
00:50:04And he's ruled
00:50:05in for the score.
00:50:11So with two minutes
00:50:12and 20 seconds left
00:50:13to go in the first half
00:50:14behind a couple of penalties
00:50:16by New England
00:50:17the Packers finally
00:50:18get on the scoreboard
00:50:21and the question
00:50:22of Gary Ellis
00:50:23just giving that
00:50:24second effort
00:50:25it looked like a
00:50:26rugby scrum
00:50:27where they were
00:50:28stopped for a moment
00:50:29and then it just became
00:50:30a pushing war.
00:50:31Take a look at it
00:50:32for yourself right here.
00:50:33See Tippett
00:50:34see how strong
00:50:35he is right there.
00:50:36Very hard to tell
00:50:37the referee calls
00:50:38it touchdown.
00:50:39Bill Greco in now
00:50:40to attempt the
00:50:41extra point conversion.
00:50:46And it's blocked
00:50:47again.
00:50:51Donnie Blackmon.
00:50:53The Packers had a field
00:50:54goal blocked
00:50:55by Julius Adams.
00:50:56Now they come back
00:50:57and have an extra point
00:50:58attempt blocked
00:50:59by Don Blackmon.
00:51:00Those kinds of plays
00:51:01could turn out to be
00:51:02the difference in the
00:51:03ballgame towards the
00:51:04end of the contest.
00:51:05But you know
00:51:06take a look at it again.
00:51:07Blackman up the middle
00:51:08gets a lot of
00:51:09penetration this side.
00:51:10You see Dickey
00:51:11is the holder though.
00:51:12It used to be
00:51:13Bucky Scribner.
00:51:14Scribner was cut
00:51:15and that will make
00:51:16a difference in the
00:51:17kicking game.
00:51:18Having a new holder
00:51:19that split second
00:51:20Stephen Starring
00:51:21is back to receive.
00:51:24And he gets it at
00:51:25about the one yard line.
00:51:29Runs into one of
00:51:30his own men.
00:51:31Gets up to about
00:51:32the 22 yard line
00:51:33before he's tackled
00:51:34by Charles Martin.
00:51:40Here are the
00:51:41Chicago Bears
00:51:42coming back.
00:51:43They trail Tampa Bay
00:51:44by seven.
00:51:4521-14.
00:51:47Miami still over
00:51:48Houston.
00:51:50Detroit and Atlanta
00:51:51are all tied
00:51:52in the second quarter.
00:51:54Pittsburgh over
00:51:55Indianapolis by 14
00:51:56in the second quarter.
00:51:58Kansas City
00:51:59leading New Orleans
00:52:0020-3.
00:52:03And here
00:52:04it is the
00:52:05New England Patriots
00:52:06leading the Green Bay Packers.
00:52:09First and 10 for
00:52:10New England.
00:52:11Handoff goes to
00:52:12Tony Collins.
00:52:14Collins across
00:52:15the 25 yard line.
00:52:16First met there
00:52:17by John Anderson.
00:52:20Who else?
00:52:21Who else?
00:52:25Second and 5
00:52:26for the Patriots.
00:52:27Wallace at the
00:52:2827 yard line.
00:52:34Here's a handoff
00:52:35to Tony Collins.
00:52:38Collins is doing
00:52:39some smart running
00:52:40I think out there.
00:52:41He's getting up behind
00:52:42the line of scrimmage
00:52:43and actually picking
00:52:44his own holes.
00:52:45I think the offensive
00:52:46system is to let him
00:52:47run wherever he wants.
00:52:48He had a great draft
00:52:49choice in 81.
00:52:50He was drafted
00:52:51number 2.
00:52:52He was pro bowl in 84.
00:52:53You didn't hear much
00:52:54in 83 that is.
00:52:55You didn't hear much
00:52:56about him because
00:52:57of that worn back
00:52:58offense Ron Meyer
00:52:59had last season.
00:53:00Tony Collins was
00:53:01in the doghouse.
00:53:02But now he's out
00:53:03and he's excited.
00:53:04And he picks up
00:53:05enough yardage
00:53:06for the first down.
00:53:07A minute 26 to go
00:53:08on the first half.
00:53:12He's in.
00:53:13Complete to Collins.
00:53:15And the Patriots
00:53:16have called
00:53:17for a timeout.
00:53:21And you get a sense
00:53:22that Easton is in
00:53:23total control.
00:53:24Smart passes.
00:53:25Runs Collins once
00:53:26picks up some yards.
00:53:27Sends him out
00:53:28of the backfield.
00:53:29Finds him in a very
00:53:30safe high percentage
00:53:31pass for the first down.
00:53:32Casually calls
00:53:33a timeout.
00:53:34Patriots want to
00:53:35put something else
00:53:36on the board.
00:53:37They lead 12 to 6.
00:53:38And the Patriots
00:53:39have called
00:53:40for a timeout.
00:53:41And you get a sense
00:53:42that Easton is
00:53:43in total control.
00:53:44They lead 12 to 6.
00:53:45A Packers touchdown
00:53:46puts the Packers ahead.
00:53:47So certainly
00:53:48New England cannot
00:53:49coast.
00:53:50They should try to
00:53:51get something going
00:53:52into the locker room
00:53:53to give them a little
00:53:54bit of a cushion.
00:53:55Easton has that
00:53:56real easy going
00:53:57kind of attitude
00:53:58as he's completed
00:53:5910 of 13 for 97 yards.
00:54:00He was saying
00:54:01yesterday that he
00:54:02wants to perform
00:54:03on the field
00:54:04the same way
00:54:05he does in practice.
00:54:06Interesting.
00:54:07He said he wants
00:54:08to be a cerebral
00:54:09quarterback.
00:54:10Emotion he said
00:54:11narrows his vision.
00:54:12His ability to be
00:54:13cool out there.
00:54:14So he wants to be
00:54:15on the same
00:54:16emotional level
00:54:17all the time.
00:54:18You see the
00:54:19balanced offense
00:54:20that the Patriots
00:54:21have.
00:54:22They've run the
00:54:23ball 16 times.
00:54:24They've thrown
00:54:25it 17.
00:54:26That is a
00:54:27coach's dream.
00:54:28Balance.
00:54:29Remember what
00:54:30Barry told us
00:54:31about his dad
00:54:32down in Texas.
00:54:33The one thing
00:54:34he learned very
00:54:35early in life
00:54:36was that balance
00:54:37was the key
00:54:38to being successful
00:54:39in anything in life.
00:54:40And he also
00:54:41learned that
00:54:42balance was the
00:54:43key to being successful
00:54:44in anything in life.
00:54:45That's it.
00:54:46So the Patriots
00:54:47have the balance.
00:54:48They have the
00:54:49lead right now.
00:54:50And they're from
00:54:51the shotgun
00:54:52formation.
00:54:53He's in
00:54:54flush out
00:54:55and he runs
00:54:56out of bounds.
00:54:57Pushed
00:54:58out there by
00:54:59number 90
00:55:00as Nick
00:55:01Johnson.
00:55:02And so
00:55:03the Green
00:55:04Bay Vets.
00:55:06So give credit
00:55:07then to the
00:55:08Packers
00:55:09secondary for
00:55:10doing a great
00:55:11job of covering
00:55:12downfield.
00:55:13They had great
00:55:14coverage but
00:55:15Easton does not
00:55:16like to throw
00:55:17interceptions so
00:55:18he won't be sure
00:55:19but he can.
00:55:20Ezra Johnson
00:55:21here leaving.
00:55:22See he gets
00:55:23his hands on him
00:55:24before he gets
00:55:25out of bounds.
00:55:26I don't think
00:55:27it was a penalty.
00:55:28And Easton
00:55:29just slides right
00:55:30into the bench
00:55:31but obviously
00:55:32didn't hurt
00:55:33himself.
00:55:34A little extra
00:55:35effort.
00:55:36Got him before
00:55:37he left the
00:55:38field.
00:55:39A legal shot.
00:55:40And Ezra is
00:55:41really trying to do
00:55:42anything he can
00:55:43because he's
00:55:44fighting a back
00:55:45injury that's
00:55:46bothered him for
00:55:47the last three
00:55:48years.
00:55:49Second and
00:55:5013.
00:55:51Low
00:55:52snap from
00:55:53center the shotgun
00:55:54and their flags
00:55:55on a play that
00:55:56and it will be
00:55:57stopped.
00:55:58Play will be
00:55:59stopped.
00:56:00But once again
00:56:01you know about
00:56:02the shotgun
00:56:03and the
00:56:04back injury
00:56:05that's
00:56:06a little bit
00:56:07of a
00:56:08distraction.
00:56:09Well start
00:56:10number 76
00:56:11offense.
00:56:12You know
00:56:13Brian Holloway
00:56:14number 76
00:56:15was a little
00:56:16worried about
00:56:17Ezra Johnson
00:56:18on his side
00:56:19of the field.
00:56:20That's why he
00:56:21got off a little
00:56:22too early there.
00:56:23Of course
00:56:24Brian Holloway
00:56:25they're all
00:56:26pro offensive
00:56:27tackle 50
00:56:28year out of
00:56:29Stanford.
00:56:30And he and
00:56:31John Hanna
00:56:32and the
00:56:33Patriots
00:56:34again.
00:56:35But now
00:56:36it's second
00:56:37and 18.
00:56:38The
00:56:39Patriots
00:56:40again from
00:56:41the shotgun
00:56:42so he's
00:56:43going to have
00:56:44James wide
00:56:45open with
00:56:46the ball
00:56:47hitting right
00:56:48in the stomach
00:56:49but he
00:56:50couldn't hold
00:56:51up.
00:56:53That will
00:56:54make it the
00:56:55third down
00:56:56for New
00:56:57England.
00:56:58Third and
00:56:5918.
00:57:03He's kind of
00:57:04because it may
00:57:05be because of
00:57:06some drop
00:57:07passes out
00:57:08there.
00:57:09He's
00:57:10going to
00:57:11have a
00:57:12little
00:57:13bit
00:57:14of a
00:57:15distraction
00:57:16there.
00:57:17He's
00:57:18going to
00:57:19have a
00:57:20little
00:57:21wait
00:57:22pa lot
00:57:23for
00:57:241930.
00:57:28Well there's
00:57:29been a shift
00:57:30in the tempo
00:57:31of the
00:57:32game.
00:57:33The
00:57:36Packers have
00:57:37picked up a
00:57:39bit.
00:57:40Patriots
00:57:41have dropped
00:57:42off.
00:57:43It's
00:57:45the second
00:57:46time the
00:57:47Clarence
00:57:48brothers has
00:57:49come up
00:57:50Reception and once again, it just goes to show you the the number of good wide receivers that they do have
00:57:54They certainly do that ball was perfectly thrown
00:57:59The three wide receivers
00:58:1529 yards out first down
00:58:21He's gonna want to stop the clock quickly, but we just stand up and throw it out of bounds
00:58:41And the Packers are just standing in awe
00:58:43I think that they thought also John that he said was going to try and just throw it out of bounds
00:58:47But when you have wide receivers like the Patriots have touchdown Cedric Jones
00:58:53Not only that I have to blame that on Tim Lewis number 2016 really casual
00:58:57I think Easton said well, I'll throw it up in a way if he catches it fine touchdown
00:59:01Otherwise, I'll throw it away and stop the clock defensive back was dozing off
00:59:09Tony Franklin in to attempt the extra point conversion
00:59:18No doubt about it
00:59:22But while the defense is caught nothing you will have to admit a great throw by Easton just great
00:59:29And what a catch by Jones take a look at it again
00:59:31He's in just stands up here throws it kind of casually outside see the defensive back there half turn around stops. That's Tim Lewis
00:59:40And Jones makes the great catch
00:59:43Take a look at it again from the end zone. Okay, things are happening fast
00:59:46The defense did not get set see him just lobbing way outside. No chance for an interception good catch
00:59:54Easton is now 13 of 17 for 159 yards and one touchdown
01:00:00And I think the long pass to Derwin Williams really got Green Bay all confused
01:00:06They were standing around
01:00:08They kind of thought that the Eastern was going to try and throw the ball out of bounds and set up another play
01:00:12But instead touchdown to Durham Williams
01:00:1519 to 6 the Patriots over the Packers with eight seconds left to go on the first half and what an impressive drive by Tony
01:00:22Easton the good quarterbacks can take that two-minute drill and hurry up offense and do it
01:00:27Tony Easton just showed an awful lot of maturity there
01:00:29He moved his team down the field in about a minute and 20 seconds for the score
