00:00:00Quite frankly, you wonder if two years of major college football is enough to get you ready for the NFL experience.
00:00:07It's not enough, Phil. And I don't care how smart or how physically talented the man is, and he is both in need.
00:00:13Two years of major college football is not enough.
00:00:16Bernie Kosar will be a much better football player two or three years from now than he is right now.
00:00:21But he really doesn't have the choice. He's got to go get the job done.
00:00:24Matt Barr lets it sail. That is Starring at the goal line.
00:00:28And here comes Stephan Starring.
00:00:30Across the 27, out near the 28, and boy, he is wrestled out of bounds there.
00:00:40Matt Barr is the one who ultimately wrestled him out on the sideline.
00:00:47Take another look at this. You're going to see some excellent blocking here by the Patriots.
00:00:52Wanting to come out of the end zone, get some momentum created.
00:00:55There you see a blocking.
00:00:56Oh, wow. Good morning. Good afternoon. How are you doing there?
00:01:0055 of the Browns. Never saw the block.
00:01:03That's the kind of hitting you like to open the second halfway.
00:01:05First down from the 30-yard line, the Patriots.
00:01:10They trail by one. Just underway here in the second half of play.
00:01:14Asin with time. Pass is complete to his tight end, Lynn Dawson.
00:01:18That is Dawson's third catch of the day.
00:01:20That equals his season total.
00:01:22Phil, we talked about just a few minutes ago the effectiveness of going to Morgan and Fryer down deep, downtown, vertically.
00:01:30It's going to open up for people like Lynn Dawson and Tony Collins underneath the zones.
00:01:35You want to back those defenders off going deep, and that will soften the underbelly of those zones
00:01:40and make Lynn Dawson and Tony Collins and Derek Ramsey all that much more effective.
00:01:44We talked at the top of our telecast, Bob Kuchenberg, about the effectiveness of this Cleveland Brown linebacking corps.
00:01:50They have pressured Tony Eason four times in the first half.
00:01:56That is a very undervalued statistic.
00:01:58You're beginning to see the statistic pressure, quarterback pressure coming along.
00:02:03And in many times, I think a pressure is more valuable in a sack.
00:02:06A sack is a five or six-yard loss.
00:02:08A pressure can result in a turnover, an interception.
00:02:12The give is right up the gut to Craig James.
00:02:14And oh, as he's stacked up.
00:02:16Bob Golick, the big nose tackle out of some minor.
00:02:20University in the Midwest on the tackle.
00:02:23Match-ups going in the center of the line here.
00:02:25Bob Golick, nose guard.
00:02:27Big John Hanna, number 73 here, putting the head down, being taken on by Scott Nicholas.
00:02:32Not a bad job by the young linebacker.
00:02:34And that's what happened so many times.
00:02:36The body congestion in there, the pile fell on John's legs.
00:02:40He's had calf problems all year long.
00:02:42What a fine player he's been.
00:02:43Where'd Golick go to school?
00:02:45Bob Golick, of course, the Golden Dome of Notre Dame.
00:02:49That's coming to the right side, and he's got some running room.
00:02:54Chased out by Al Gross.
00:02:55You're not talking about Notre Dame, are you?
00:02:58My alma mater, the Golden Dane.
00:03:00The Golden Dome.
00:03:03Mad dog Bob Golick, they call him there.
00:03:05Quite a wrestler.
00:03:06Three-time NCAA wrestling participant.
00:03:10And a very strong player.
00:03:12Fine football player, but he's got a handful today going against Pete Brock and John Hanna and Ron Wooten in the center of that Patriot offensive line.
00:03:19And it is Bob Golick and Hanford-Dixon that are responsible for naming that Cleveland defensive unit the Dawgs.
00:03:26Of course, it goes back to what you just said.
00:03:28In college, Golick was known as mad dog, and he and Dan Hanford-Dixon a year ago started barking at one another after pretty good defensive plays.
00:03:36They've been barking ever since.
00:03:38And everybody here in Cleveland's picked up on it now.
00:03:39They've got a section down in the end zone where they bark at the opposing team in pregame warm-ups.
00:03:43Spotted just short of the first down there, you see it.
00:03:49The dog pound.
00:03:50There's that dog defensive unit.
00:03:56Hanford was saying that a couple of weeks ago, fans were bringing those brawl-eyed dog bones to the stadium.
00:04:03And that opened into the end zone, and the defense would make a great play.
00:04:06These fans would start hurling those dog bones out of here.
00:04:09Hanford went on television here in the Cleveland area and said,
00:04:11Hey, those things hurt.
00:04:12Be careful.
00:04:13I understand Hanford-Dixon barked at Henry Kissinger.
00:04:18He wanted to teach Kissinger how to bark.
00:04:22That's James.
00:04:23Had a costly fumble a week ago that resulted in a greater touchdown.
00:04:28Don Rogers on the tackle.
00:04:31Phil, the identity, the very essence of this New England offense throughout the years has been centered around this man,
00:04:36John Hanna, perhaps the greatest guard to ever play this ballgame.
00:04:39Didn't get a great block that time, but kept after.
00:04:42Just enough body English air to enable the ball carrier to get through.
00:04:45And the Patriots love to run left behind Big John and Brian Holloway.
00:04:49Aeson is really hit.
00:04:51Morgan is hit twice.
00:04:53Brazil and Don Rogers hammers Stanley Morgan.
00:04:59Credit Morgan with a fine effort there to keep the ball from being picked up.
00:05:04He went over the back of Hanford-Dixon to prevent the interception.
00:05:07Aeson looking short there and then going deep.
00:05:13Ball's in the air.
00:05:14He's well covered.
00:05:15Going up over Larry Brazil's back to prevent the interception.
00:05:21Second down and 10 now from the Browns' 39-yard line.
00:05:28New England has never led in this ballgame.
00:05:31There's the draw to Craig James.
00:05:32Oh, nice his way through Hanna.
00:05:35Down inside the 33 near the 32.
00:05:38Chip Banks on the tackle.
00:05:39What a job James did of maneuvering by John Hanna.
00:05:43Not only John Hanna, Phil, but Brian Holloway, the all-pro left tackle.
00:05:47Six feet, seven, 288 pounds.
00:05:50And that's a lot of beef on the left side of the line.
00:05:52And as this game wears on,
00:05:54if the New England Patriot offense can stay on the field
00:05:56and keep their defense off the field,
00:05:58they're going to do it by running left.
00:06:02Third down and three.
00:06:06James is the lone running back.
00:06:09Brown showing blitz.
00:06:10James has the ball.
00:06:11And he will be stopped short of the first down.
00:06:15Bob Golic, the nose tackle, stuffed it up.
00:06:18Interesting situation and decision here, Phil.
00:06:20You've got fourth down now.
00:06:21Inside of a yard to go.
00:06:24It's what I call a four-down zone.
00:06:26I think that you've got a decision whether to kick the field goal
00:06:29or go for the first down.
00:06:31And Tony Franklin remains on the sidelines at the midfield stripe.
00:06:35He took three or four steps onto the field
00:06:37and then turned around and came off.
00:06:39And now Eason will head for the far sidelines.
00:06:42A timeout for the Patriots to talk things over.
00:06:45Fourth down, less than one.
00:06:51Raymond Berry and the brain trust of the New England Patriots
00:06:56talked it over and Tony Franklin is on.
00:06:59Two for two in the field goal department this afternoon.
00:07:02If, in fact, he lets this one fly, Bob, it would come from...
00:07:0648 yards.
00:07:0748 yards out.
00:07:10Tony has plenty of leg.
00:07:1148 yards is within his distance.
00:07:13But I don't like the call.
00:07:15I think I like to run behind Hannon Holloway.
00:07:18Go for the first down.
00:07:22It's down.
00:07:23It's got distance.
00:07:25And it is wide to the left.
00:07:27So, Matt Barr, whose field goal streak ended at 14 in a row earlier today.
00:07:34This time, Tony Franklin's comes to an end at eight.
00:07:38Have the football following the missed field goal attempt by Tony Franklin.
00:07:43He had hit nine in a row prior to that miss from 48 yards away.
00:07:48It is Kozar, the little crossbuck.
00:07:49It is given to Ernest Beiner.
00:07:51He finds a little running room there, the 32, and stopped there by Steve Nelson.
00:07:56Bob Kuchenberg, you did not like that conservative call by Raymond Berry.
00:08:01No, Phil, I certainly did not.
00:08:02Even had they made the field goal.
00:08:04I still didn't like the call.
00:08:0548 yards.
00:08:06I think your percentages of making that field goal are 50% at best
00:08:10compared to your percentages of success for one yard behind John Hanna and Brian Holloway,
00:08:16I would think, would be much greater than 50%.
00:08:18How about that score?
00:08:20Green Bay over the Lions.
00:08:2227-3 now midway through the third period.
00:08:26Kozar's first pass in the NFL is complete to Brian Brenny.
00:08:33Boy, Brennan has had a couple of big catches today,
00:08:36and Brennan himself has thrown a touchdown pass.
00:08:39Big play here for Bernie Kozar.
00:08:41He's broken the ice.
00:08:42He's completed his first pass in the NFL.
00:08:45Ball couldn't have been thrown any better.
00:08:47That coverage was good and tight.
00:08:49Good throw and good pattern and good catch.
00:08:51Look at his reaction right here.
00:08:56Yeah.
00:08:58People don't realize how much pressure that play took off Bernie Kozar.
00:09:01He'd come in.
00:09:01He had a fumble on his first play.
00:09:03He now has his first NFL completion.
00:09:06Third down and one.
00:09:08Second man.
00:09:09That's Biner.
00:09:09He dives out near the 41, and I don't know if he got it.
00:09:15It's going to be close.
00:09:16Very, very close.
00:09:17It will certainly result in a measurement.
00:09:20We pause briefly for station identification.
00:09:22This is the NBC television network.
00:09:25This is WBZ TV for Boston.
00:09:2710 minutes, 42 seconds to play on the third period from Cleveland Stadium on a cool, brisk afternoon.
00:09:40It is Cleveland by one over the New England Patriots.
00:09:43Bill Stone along with Bob Kuchenberg.
00:09:45We told you at the outset of our telecast, we expected a dandy, and we have got nothing less.
00:09:51First down by the length of the football.
00:09:53Marty Schottenheimer, criticized by some in the local media for his lack of creativity when it comes to offense.
00:10:04He has mixed it up well today.
00:10:06Turnovers have cost his ball club.
00:10:08That's right, Phil.
00:10:09He certainly has mixed it up.
00:10:10The old double pass.
00:10:12He's not been conservative today.
00:10:18Kozar play action.
00:10:21It is good.
00:10:23Bernie Kozar is two for two.
00:10:34Clarence Weathers with the reception at the Patriots, 42-yard line.
00:10:39Ronnie Lippitt roundabout.
00:10:41Tight man-to-man coverage here.
00:10:43Clarence Weathers on Ronnie Lippitt.
00:10:46Taking, driving him downfield.
00:10:47Coming back to the ball.
00:10:48The good receivers come back to the ball.
00:10:50The ball put right there, on time.
00:10:54Bernie Kozar, very impressive.
00:10:56Two for two passing.
00:10:57Miner and Mack are the running backs.
00:11:00Play action.
00:11:01Kozar again.
00:11:01Three for three.
00:11:03Yes!
00:11:04Brian Brennan at the 31.
00:11:06Another clean line first down.
00:11:09And, Bob, don't you know, with every completion, Kozar's confidence back here goes up, up, up some more.
00:11:23That's right, Phil.
00:11:24Look at this.
00:11:25Boy, he put something on this ball.
00:11:26That ball did not take very long.
00:11:28Very tight spiral.
00:11:29Right there.
00:11:30Got there in a hurry.
00:11:31Boy, you said it, Bob.
00:11:32A tight spiral.
00:11:33Kozar, three of gray, 42 yards.
00:11:41Little quarterback draw.
00:11:43Nothing there.
00:11:44And the main reason is because Dennis Owens and Steve Nelson snipped it out.
00:11:49Phil, I don't think, I think that may have been an extemporaneous quarterback draw.
00:11:55I think he meant to hand the ball off, but there was nobody to hand it off to.
00:11:59I don't think at this point you want Bernie Kozar running with the football.
00:12:03He's much like Dan Fox and Dan Marino.
00:12:05He's got the shotgun of an arm, but not very mobile.
00:12:08You don't want him running the ball.
00:12:09Nine minutes, 43 seconds to play, third period.
00:12:15The Browns, 14.
00:12:17The Patriots, 13.
00:12:22Kozar.
00:12:23Near side.
00:12:24It's cut.
00:12:25That's Ozzie Newsom.
00:12:26Gets up and then decides.
00:12:29And perhaps it's a better idea to stay down.
00:12:32Steve Nelson covers it.
00:12:35This telecast is presented by authority of the NFL.
00:12:38It is intended solely for the private use of our audience.
00:12:40Now, any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast without the express written consent of the Cleveland Browns
00:12:47and the National Football League is prohibited.
00:12:51Phil, the Browns cannot afford to lose this man.
00:12:53He's their leading sacker this year in quarterback pressure.
00:12:57He's been all over the field in the first half.
00:12:58He's got a fat ankle.
00:12:59Looking at Kozar dropping back here.
00:13:02Boom.
00:13:03Ball gets rid of the ball in a hurry.
00:13:05Fine delivery.
00:13:08He knows what to do with the football.
00:13:12Now, Blackman is now being carried to the bench.
00:13:14He made it to the sideline on his own and is now being lifted to the bench.
00:13:19Not a good sign for Patriot fans.
00:13:22Not at all, Phil.
00:13:22They cannot afford to lose.
00:13:24Don Blackman at this point.
00:13:25The shot gun.
00:13:29Little inside handoff.
00:13:30That's Kleiner.
00:13:31A flag is down.
00:13:32Rembert and Tippet on the stop.
00:13:47Illegal motion against Cleveland is the preliminary indication.
00:13:52What happened there, Phil, was the wide receiver was not near enough to the line of scrimmage.
00:14:12He was more than a yard off the line of scrimmage.
00:14:14Consequently, that caused the offensive tackle to be the end man on the line of scrimmage.
00:14:18That's illegal unless he reports and, therefore, is an eligible receiver.
00:14:24Mack Barr is 0 for 1 today.
00:14:27Paul McDonald will hold on fourth down and sixth from the 27.
00:14:3344 yards out.
00:14:438.51 to play in the third period.
00:14:46And the Browns now lead by four.
00:14:49There's the man who led the Miami Hurricanes to a national championship in 83.
00:14:53A fiesta bowl appearance in 84.
00:14:55Bernie Kosar, his NFL debut, 4 of 4, Bob, 41 yards.
00:15:00And he positions Mack Barr for a 44-yard field goal.
00:15:04That's more like the script I would have written.
00:15:06Well put.
00:15:07Stephan Starring at the 9-yard line.
00:15:13Breaks one tackle.
00:15:14Scott Nichol has had him at the 20-yard line.
00:15:16Starring broken.
00:15:18Moved it out near the 25 and is finally stopped by Felix Wright.
00:15:21The nickel back for the Cleveland Browns.
00:15:25The Patriot offense today has yet to crack the end zone.
00:15:35That's true, Bill.
00:15:36But I still, the need for this man to continue to be aggressive.
00:15:4011 for 20, 167.
00:15:41Not bad stats.
00:15:43But he needs to be aggressive.
00:15:44Cannot get conservative at this point.
00:15:46Weathers and Craig James in the setbacks.
00:15:49He's the ones to put it up.
00:15:50Right over the top.
00:15:52That is Derrick Ramsey holding that football out like a loaf of bread.
00:15:56And fortunately for the Patriots, he did not cough it up.
00:15:59Larry Brazil slow getting up at the 41-yard line.
00:16:02A first down for New England.
00:16:04Derrick Ramsey just ran a little lazy delay pattern.
00:16:09A little hook over the end zone.
00:16:10And just stood there for about two full seconds.
00:16:12Letting the Brown linebackers run to their areas of the zone.
00:16:16They never saw him.
00:16:20First and ten.
00:16:21Asin is hit just as he releases the ball.
00:16:32It is an incompleted forward pass.
00:16:35Clay Matthews beat John Hanna, Bill, on that play.
00:16:37Clay Matthews coming from the right side of the Brown defense.
00:16:41John Hanna was out there to pick him up.
00:16:43But Clay kept coming, kept coming.
00:16:44You're going to see number 57 and wide here on the left side of your screen.
00:16:47Blitzing.
00:16:48Big John Hanna.
00:16:49He's got the block.
00:16:49But John doesn't sustain it.
00:16:50Clay keeps coming.
00:16:52Gets the quarterback hit.
00:16:54Fine play.
00:16:55You're seeing why Marty Schottenheimer calls Clay Matthews perhaps the finest outside linebacker in the NFL today.
00:17:02Second time this afternoon.
00:17:04The Dawgs have gotten to Tony Eason.
00:17:0715 sacks against Eason all year.
00:17:10Weathers.
00:17:11Timing pattern.
00:17:12He's got it.
00:17:13And is down at the Cleveland 47-yard line.
00:17:16That is Robert Weathers, the brother of Clarence Weathers.
00:17:19Bill, I have a question for you.
00:17:20Right now, what are mom and pop Weathers thinking?
00:17:23Are they happy or unhappy that Robert caught that ball for a first time?
00:17:27The question has to be, you've got to believe that one of them is sitting on each side of this field today.
00:17:32Who do you pull for?
00:17:33That's a good question.
00:17:34I once had the same situation.
00:17:35My brother Rudy played for these same very Cleveland Browns in 1970 when I was playing for the Dolphins.
00:17:40And mom and dad were in the stands.
00:17:43Unfortunately, the Browns beat us 28 to zip that day.
00:17:46Incidentally, the word on Don Blackman, the outside linebacker from the Patriots, an injured ankle there.
00:17:52They're taking it to the locker room for an X-ray.
00:17:54They're taking it to the locker room for an X-ray.
00:17:55They're taking it to the locker room for an X-ray.
00:17:55It's my action, Eason.
00:17:57Now comes back to the near side.
00:17:58Derrick Browns, he hands it on his fingertips and cannot hold it.
00:18:01Stanley Morgan had beaten everybody by about 10 yards, and Eason didn't find him.
00:18:12Right now, Stanley Morgan is walking off the field at the 20-yard line all by himself.
00:18:17I think he must have come from the locker room, Bill.
00:18:21Clay Matthews and Chip Banks are blitzing nearly every play now, Bill, and I think that's good pressure defense.
00:18:27You see the ball here is thrown just a little bit high.
00:18:29Derrick Ramsey makes that catch walk to the nut.
00:18:32Out of the eye formation, normally a run formation.
00:18:40Eason, a quick release.
00:18:43Cowboys cannot get back to make the catch.
00:18:45Pardon me, that is Cedric Jones.
00:18:48Fourth year out of two.
00:18:50And now you put yourself in a situation on third and 10, Cooch, where you really have to air it out.
00:18:55Well, they've been very effective with the draw point, and Cleveland knows
00:18:58so I think that Cleveland has to respect the draw play a little bit.
00:19:03But yes, it's by and large a passing situation, and the dogs, they called the dogs that time.
00:19:08They had the safety blitz on, and Eason had to get rid of the ball before he wanted to.
00:19:11And Eason, right over the top, intended for James, and he holds the football.
00:19:25What a catch!
00:19:27I can't believe that.
00:19:28He was covered by three men.
00:19:29The ball had to be thrown in perfectly.
00:19:32What a catch by Derwin Williams.
00:19:34First year out of New Mexico.
00:19:38You're going to see Derwin Williams, a slot back here on the center of your screen, going
00:19:42right down the middle, being followed stride by stride by the linebacker.
00:19:46The safety coming over from the center.
00:19:48Boy, that ball had to be perfectly thrown.
00:19:50Going up, deflected, and yet what concentration.
00:19:54Derwin Williams, splendid concentration.
00:19:56A 24-yard reception for Williams.
00:19:59He's averaging over 17 yards a catch.
00:20:04That's Craig James, no place to go.
00:20:08He avoided Clay Matthews back at the 28-yard line, but he ran head-on into Scott, Nicholas,
00:20:16and Don Rogers.
00:20:18Yeah, take a look here.
00:20:20Indianapolis playing it all over the Buffalo Bills.
00:20:24New coach there, replacing Coach Johnson.
00:20:27He's having a rough day.
00:20:28Watch it out, not the Hollywood script.
00:20:32Listen to this chant here.
00:20:34Defense.
00:20:35Defense.
00:20:39Defense.
00:20:40Defense.
00:20:41Defense.
00:20:42Defense.
00:20:43Defense.
00:20:44Defense.
00:20:45Defense.
00:20:46Defense.
00:20:47Defense.
00:20:48Defense.
00:20:49Defense.
00:20:50Defense.
00:20:51Defense.
00:20:52Defense.
00:20:53Art.
00:20:54Defense.
00:20:54You're experiencing the 12th man here.
00:20:57This stadium is rocking and rolling.
00:20:59The fans are excited.
00:21:00They almost took one off there.
00:21:02He hit Frank Minifield right in the numbers, and Frank can't believe that he dropped the
00:21:05ball.
00:21:06I don't know who he was going to throw the ball.
00:21:08The receiver had fallen down.
00:21:09Stanley Morgan falling down and Frank, many fell down after that one hit him in the solar plexus and he couldn't hold on him.
00:21:18Listen to these fans calling for defense.
00:21:21Third down and ninth of the 22 will not attempt to talk over this roar.
00:21:39He took a hit that I don't believe what concentration the ball was deflected.
00:21:53Bobbling the ball.
00:21:54He comes out of all that.
00:22:00That is a pressure catch.
00:22:01He's been putting the ball up many field with a one for one anybody's ball at this point many field deflecting it.
00:22:14Here comes the hit boom.
00:22:19Out what a gross.
00:22:21Out gross a strong safety coming over putting the hit on Stanley Morgan while he's battling the ball.
00:22:27So I don't believe he caught that.
00:22:28I don't see how he caught it.
00:22:29Tony Franklin, barefoot it all, sends it through.
00:22:34Stanley Morgan now on the day.
00:22:36Four catches for 89 yards.
00:22:39Oh, what a ball game.
00:22:40The Patriots with their first lead today.
00:22:43That drive by the Patriots, nine plays, 74 yards.
00:22:48The first time that the offense has punched the ball into the end zone today.
00:22:51Tony Franklin to let it set sail.
00:22:54It's a short kick.
00:22:55Very, very short.
00:22:57That's Young at the 12.
00:23:04And he is hammered out of bounds, but not before he advances the ball across the 40-yard line.
00:23:10Jim Bowman rolls him out.
00:23:12Bill, I want to take another look at this touchdown catch.
00:23:14This is a remarkable catch.
00:23:15Juggs Morgan here breaks, by the way, breaks Gino Capaletti's all-time touchdown.
00:23:20What's amazing about this catch is he is bobbling it.
00:23:23Poor Frank Minifield has to wonder.
00:23:25Here's the amazing part.
00:23:26Boom!
00:23:27They hit by Al Gross.
00:23:29I don't know how Juggs comes down with this ball.
00:23:31Minifield and Gross have got to be talking to themselves.
00:23:33Come at the end of the season, Morgan and Gino Capaletti have shared the touchdown receptions for the Patriots with 42 apiece.
00:23:43That's Brennan.
00:23:45On his feet at the 44 and falls backwards at the 45.
00:23:49Steve Nilsen on the tackle.
00:23:50Now, Coach, you were right on at the top of our telecast.
00:23:58You said Eason would have to get the ball downfield.
00:24:04Boy, he has done it to Stanley Morgan.
00:24:06He certainly has.
00:24:07In the first half, he was trying to hit Irving Trier, and he's been doing it.
00:24:11But just the threat of that has opened up the Cleveland defense.
00:24:14Bernie Kosar is the quarterback for the Browns.
00:24:18Danielson out with an injured right arm.
00:24:20Up in the gut is Kevin Mack.
00:24:22He moves into the 47 and no more.
00:24:27Toby Williams, third year out of Nebraska.
00:24:29The right defensive end stops Mack.
00:24:36Boy, a week ago today in San Diego.
00:24:39Kevin Mack, a 61-yard run to open the ball game.
00:24:43But what a day it has been for that man, Juggs Morgan.
00:24:47What a catch.
00:24:49I'm still not over that catch.
00:24:50Mack out of the ball game on third down and three.
00:24:55The lone running back now is Ernest Beiner.
00:25:03Ozzie Newsom.
00:25:04Bob, what Charlie Joyner is to the San Diego offense on third down, Ozzie Newsom is to this Cleveland unit.
00:25:17You're right, Phil.
00:25:19The Patriots had a blitz on here.
00:25:21Nellie coming in.
00:25:21Steve Nelson trying to get the quarterback.
00:25:24The young rookie quarterback knows where the weakness is.
00:25:26Hits Newsom, the old pro.
00:25:29First down.
00:25:30I'll pop those numbers for the rook.
00:25:34Not too shabby.
00:25:42Patriots showing blitz.
00:25:44Kosar releases and a hurried attack.
00:25:45The first down at the New England 36-yard line.
00:25:53This is not what you would call conservative football, Phil.
00:25:56Fancy schmancy.
00:25:57The young quarterback picking a little handoff here.
00:25:59Rolling out to his left.
00:26:01Wide open.
00:26:04That little breakdown there in the secondary.
00:26:06I think the linebackers were fooled with the play-action pass.
00:26:08Bernie Kosar almost getting hit here, but being saved by his offensive line, Dan Pike, there at the end.
00:26:18Schottenheimer pulling all the stops here with his young quarterback.
00:26:22First and ten from the 36-yard line.
00:26:26Kosar steps up.
00:26:30He'll just take it to the sideline.
00:26:32As the Cleveland fans and management and coaches hold their breath.
00:26:42Yeah, they've had one quarterback go out today via the injury.
00:26:45They do not need the rookie to go out.
00:26:47I think Bernie's going to have to learn how to slide here.
00:26:49This sideline had to look like it was ten miles away right about here.
00:26:56Whoa.
00:26:59Brownie Lippitt almost got him.
00:27:00It's a good thing it was Ronnie Lippitt, his old teammate with the Hurricanes.
00:27:03Probably took it a little bit easier out of there.
00:27:07Second down at eight from the 34.
00:27:10Out of the I formation.
00:27:11Back is the deep man.
00:27:13And he has got the football.
00:27:15And he doesn't have much else.
00:27:17Oh, he ran right into Dennis Owens.
00:27:19Owens did an outstanding job of fighting off the block of Mike Babb.
00:27:24Haven't heard much from Owens today, Phil.
00:27:26I think Mike Babb and Lilja and Dan Pike have been doing an excellent job in the center there.
00:27:30I would have to say that the center three players in the offensive line of the Patriots
00:27:35is winning their battle against Dennis Owens and Steve Nelson and Larry McGrew.
00:27:44Back thus far on the day.
00:27:4514 carries for 64 yards.
00:27:48He is out of the ball game right now.
00:27:54Third down and seven from the shotgun.
00:27:57Kozart up and over to Brennan.
00:28:00Oh, does he take a shot?
00:28:04Ron McSwain roll and change is the guy who put the hammer on him.
00:28:07Bill, I think that ball was underthrown, to be honest with you.
00:28:12The receiver had a step on Rod McSwain.
00:28:15And if the ball had been thrown deeply enough
00:28:17and enabled the receiver to run under it,
00:28:19it could have been a touchdown.
00:28:23Oh, it's fourth down and seven.
00:28:25And the Browns are showing that they're going to go for it.
00:28:29He's got John Jefferson and Brian Brennan to the right.
00:28:44Bill, if they make this first down, this stadium is going to explode.
00:28:53No call.
00:28:54No call.
00:28:55The fans don't like it, and I'm not sure I like it either.
00:28:58That was awfully close contact there in that reception.
00:29:02No flags, no interference.
00:29:05The fans were calling for it.
00:29:07Good defensive stand by the Patriots.
00:29:10Kozart's pass intended for Brennan.
00:29:13Good coverage on the part of Ronnie Lippitt.
00:29:19Outstanding coverage.
00:29:21Both going for the football.
00:29:23And Tippett.
00:29:26Make that Lippitt tipped it.
00:29:281.35 to play, third period.
00:29:32Patriots take over.
00:29:34Eason will put it up in the air.
00:29:39Stanley Morgan.
00:29:40He has been all over the football field.
00:29:44He's warming up on the task, isn't he?
00:29:46San Francisco doing a number on the Falcons in Atlanta.
00:29:5217-3 midway through the third period.
00:29:56I don't believe that one.
00:29:58You believe it.
00:29:59It is McMahon to Dennis McKinnon from 20 yards out with 3.40 gone in the third period at Tampa Bay.
00:30:05Green Bay all over Detroit.
00:30:0834-3.
00:30:09Dickey a couple of touchdown passes in that one.
00:30:13First and 10.
00:30:14Eason releases to the near side.
00:30:16Weathers cannot get to it.
00:30:17One other score at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis.
00:30:23Boy, the Colts all over Buffalo now, 42-10.
00:30:27The Colts are an improving ball club.
00:30:29Let me interrupt you there, Phil.
00:30:30Tony Eason very unhappy with his receiver, Robert Weathers, in that play.
00:30:33He threw the ball a little bit high, but Robert did not go up for the ball.
00:30:35Should have been caught, and had he caught it, he had a real estate in front of him.
00:30:45Eason, 16 completions today.
00:30:4730 attempts, 259 yards.
00:30:51Second down, it's in 49.
00:30:52Kicked.
00:30:53Broking him on the block in the third period.
00:30:55That's James, right side.
00:31:00Patty Johnson on the tackle.
00:31:05The Dogs were ready for this one, Phil.
00:31:10They were lying in wait.
00:31:11How about that score from the Orange Bowl?
00:31:13The Steelers giving the Dolphins all they want.
00:31:1617-17 in the fourth quarter.
00:31:19When they put that score up here in Cleveland, this play's going to go nutty.
00:31:22Yeah, that concerns both of these ball clubs.
00:31:24I'm surprised Pittsburgh hanging on that well in the second quarter in Miami.
00:31:27Miami's tough to beat at home.
00:31:28He said, flags are down.
00:31:37Tony is going for it.
00:31:40The pass intended for Cedric Jones, the fourth year wide receiver out of Duke, and it was
00:31:44overthrown.
00:31:46Flags down very early.
00:31:48It will be against the Patriots.
00:31:50Illegal motion, number 73, offense, declined, fourth down.
00:32:05And that will bring Rich Camarillo on.
00:32:09And the Browns will get the football back.
00:32:11They trailed 20-17.
00:32:13A year ago, this game decided, and the closing seconds, the final then, 17-16 Patriots.
00:32:23Clarence Weathers back in his own 11-yard line.
00:32:26Clarence Weathers, until two weeks ago, Phil, was on the other team.
00:32:29He just had to change jerseys before the game started, didn't he?
00:32:34Good snap.
00:32:35Camarillo lets it go.
00:32:37Low kick.
00:32:38Weathers should have a return at the 10-yard line.
00:32:43Fine block by, oh, is that a block?
00:32:49Well, he took it at the 10, ran about 45 yards to move the ball out to the 19-yard line.
00:32:56Don Rogers puts him out.
00:32:58Fine block by Don Rogers.
00:32:59He doesn't get enough hitting on defense.
00:33:01He's got to do it on special teams.
00:33:03There's Gary Danielson, went out late in the first half after taking a shot.
00:33:08He has ice up on that shoulder underneath that Cleveland Browns jacket, and in his stead,
00:33:15Bernie Kosar.
00:33:17And he is on the field now.
00:33:19He will try and direct the Browns.
00:33:20They are 81 yards away from taking lead in this ballgame.
00:33:24The final 15 minutes of play.
00:33:25The fourth quarter about to begin here at Cleveland Stadium on a cool, rather blustery afternoon
00:33:31here along the lakefront.
00:33:41Now, don't forget Tuesday night right here on NBC.
00:33:44The American League Championship Series begins.
00:33:47The best of seven this year.
00:33:49It'll be Toronto and Kansas City.
00:33:52You know, Phil, speaking of Kansas City, George Brett reminds me a lot of myself in my younger
00:33:56days when I played third base for the Fighting Hourship Notre Dame.
00:33:58And Brett, you know, he's a pretty good ball player all around.
00:34:01He could improve his hitting a little bit.
00:34:02I probably should spend some time with him and help him out a little bit.
00:34:05You think?
00:34:07I'll tell you what.
00:34:09Brett will have something to say about the outcome of that series.
00:34:12You can be sure.
00:34:13He has been red hot.
00:34:15It all begins Tuesday at 8 right here on NBC.
00:34:24Kosar steps up, now delivers out to Newsom.
00:34:28Good defensive coverage by Roland James.
00:34:33Browns were fortunate enough to get that pass off, Phil.
00:34:36Kevin Mack, the rookie running back, came out and picked up a blitzing Andre Tippett at the
00:34:41very last second, preventing a sack.
00:34:45Take a look at the time of possession edge there.
00:34:49Hard to believe the Patriots are ahead on this ballgame.
00:34:51You look at that yard's passing by Tony Eason.
00:34:59That is the best numbers of 1985.
00:35:02That's more like Tony Eason.
00:35:07Kevin Mack, nowhere to go.
00:35:09Bill, I might sense a little bit of a tide turning here.
00:35:17The momentum is, the Browns are losing a little bit of momentum here.
00:35:21They're now third, nine, deep in their own territory.
00:35:24They've had a conservative play called there.
00:35:26And just before that, you realize the magnificent catch for the touchdown by Stanley Morgan.
00:35:34Taking a look at the thigh of Hanford Dixon, one of the lead dogs there.
00:35:38Got a hamstring pull, apparently.
00:35:41Now with a shotgun on third down.
00:35:43Kosar just barely underthrows a diving Clarence Weathers.
00:35:49The reason, Bill, that ball was underthrown,
00:35:53because I think it was either his arm or the ball was actually hit while he was throwing.
00:35:58There was pressure from the left side of the Patriot defense.
00:36:01Either Kenneth Sims or Andre Tippett was coming along.
00:36:05You might see.
00:36:09All right.
00:36:10That ball was hit while the arm was in motion.
00:36:13You're not going to complete many passes if you're deflecting it before it's thrown.
00:36:16Jeff Gossett, his first punt today, is a short one.
00:36:19That hit somebody's foot.
00:36:21That could be a live ball.
00:36:23Hold on a minute.
00:36:25I'm not sure it hit anybody.
00:36:27Just a second.
00:36:29You might be right.
00:36:30The officials are going to talk it over.
00:36:33Did it hit a New England Patriots player?
00:36:43Indeed it did.
00:36:44The Browns will take the football.
00:36:47An alert play by the Cleveland Browns.
00:36:55Only a 35-yard punt, but in this case, it's like a 35-yard pass completion.
00:37:01It is more than that.
00:37:02It's just a life of, a breath of life.
00:37:04Raymond Claiborne, not very happy about that at all.
00:37:23The rule was that the ball hit a member of the receiving team, was recovered by the kicking team.
00:37:29First off.
00:37:29I will keep our eyes on number 26 in red, Raymond Claiborne.
00:37:34He's going to go after somebody here.
00:37:35This is not a happy man.
00:37:37No, he's not happy right now, but I don't know exactly what he's objecting to, whether it hit him or not.
00:37:42It definitely hit one of the Patriots right on the heel.
00:37:45John Jefferson is in the ballgame.
00:37:50Boy, he has yet to catch a pass in 1985.
00:37:55That's Kevin Mack.
00:37:56Not much at all.
00:37:58Toby Williams stops him.
00:38:01The Browns ran the ball in the first half, Bob, very, very effectively.
00:38:05The top-rated rushing attack on all of football.
00:38:08Thus far here in the second half, they have not found much running room at all.
00:38:12You're right, Bill.
00:38:12They haven't been able to run the ball with any consistency this second half here.
00:38:15And I'm surprised because they ran the ball very well in the first half.
00:38:18But Raymond Claiborne here is very unhappy talking to anybody that would listen.
00:38:2213-24 to play on the ballgame.
00:38:31Kozar, what a spiral.
00:38:32Oh, what a catch by Brian Brennan.
00:38:35A flag is down.
00:38:37There was a flag back at the 44-yard line.
00:38:40Fred Marion chases Brennan out after a sensational grab.
00:38:50Penalties on the Patriots.
00:38:52Holding under 58.
00:38:55Defense.
00:38:56Penalty declined.
00:38:58Let's go.
00:39:02Holding call on Pete Brock.
00:39:05Now, that can't be.
00:39:07Can't be.
00:39:0758.
00:39:08Has to be 56.
00:39:10Andre Tippett.
00:39:16Defender gambled on that play and lost.
00:39:18Fortunate that Brian Brennan didn't go all the way for a touchdown.
00:39:34Kozar looks right.
00:39:36Now, goes right.
00:39:37Looking for Brennan, and it is overthrown in the corner of the end zone.
00:39:40Good coverage by Ronnie Lippitt.
00:39:42And the Browns are continuing to work on number 42, Ronnie Lippitt.
00:39:48That man right there, 8 of 13 now for 94 yards.
00:39:53The Patriots putting good pressure on Kozar.
00:39:58See Tippett coming through there, getting to Kozar after he's thrown the ball.
00:40:03Good defense there.
00:40:06Brian Brennan in his first action since coming off the disabled list with a dislocated shoulder.
00:40:11Six catches for 93 yards.
00:40:14And he has thrown a touchdown.
00:40:17Kozar.
00:40:19Oh, what a catch.
00:40:21By Ozzie.
00:40:22The Wizard.
00:40:24The Wizard.
00:40:26I don't know how you make a catch like this.
00:40:27It sandwiched in between two linebackers.
00:40:30I don't know, first of all, why he threw it, and secondly, how it was caught.
00:40:34A little play action.
00:40:37Kind of a little bit of confusion there.
00:40:39Throwing in the traffic.
00:40:40Back, right behind Johnny Rembert.
00:40:43That's why they call him the Wizard, Phil.
00:40:46First and goal, the ball right on the 10-yard chuck.
00:40:51San Francisco out in front of Atlanta now, 17-10.
00:40:56Chicago has come back.
00:40:57They now lead Tampa Bay 13-12 in the fourth period.
00:41:01And Green Bay dancing a number all over the Detroit Lions.
00:41:04Here in Cleveland, 12-20 to play.
00:41:07Browns down by three.
00:41:08That is Kevin Mack for the five-yard line.
00:41:11Touchdown, Browns.
00:41:13A flag is down at the four-yard line.
00:41:29Hold everything.
00:41:31Hold everything.
00:41:33Oh, you've got three Patriots really jawing at an official.
00:41:49McGrath.
00:41:52McGrath.
00:41:53Tiffitt.
00:41:53Claiborne.
00:41:54They're all screaming.
00:41:56Now the flag was picked up in a rather inconspicuous manner.
00:42:00You wonder if perhaps it just fell out of the official's back pocket.
00:42:02They better be a little bit careful if they're liable to get 15 yards on this kickoff.
00:42:08Penalized against them.
00:42:09For Kevin Mack, his second touchdown of the afternoon, his fifth of the year.
00:42:23Barr sends it through the uprights.
00:42:25And with 12 minutes and 12 seconds to play.
00:42:31It's the Browns 24.
00:42:32The Patriots 20.
00:42:37Matt Barr.
00:42:38A short kick.
00:42:39It is taken at the 12-yard line.
00:42:41Advanced to the 17-yard line by Cedric Jones.
00:42:45And the Browns down him there.
00:42:47Bill, I don't think I've ever seen a game with so many short, high kickoffs.
00:42:51It's like the shortstop should go back and catch these.
00:42:55A look.
00:42:55A replay at the touchdown here.
00:42:57Just a simple football play.
00:42:58Power off your left tackle.
00:43:00Fine blocking by George Lealja and Paul Fannin.
00:43:04Down in the tough zone near the Patriot end zone.
00:43:08That is what the Browns have been doing best all year long.
00:43:18First down from the 20-yard line.
00:43:20Eason.
00:43:21Boy, he could run for a bunch.
00:43:23I think he's going to.
00:43:28The problem with it is, no, Bobby is waiting much too long to commit to that run.
00:43:33You're right, Bill.
00:43:34He should have had a lot more definition there.
00:43:37It was open pasture in front of him.
00:43:40And Coach Berry was telling us last night he would like to see Tony Eason revert to his 1984 form
00:43:45and be more aggressive running the ball.
00:43:47There's a time and place for it.
00:43:48He is not capitalizing on it.
00:43:50He stood up.
00:44:00He stood up.
00:44:01The Golden Donor.
00:44:02Bob Golick wrapped him up.
00:44:04I kind of like that, does he?
00:44:05I don't know how I was quick with that one.
00:44:09What are they talking about right now?
00:44:14You're going to see Bob Golick, number 75, right in the center of your screen, standing up.
00:44:19Pete Brock said, hello, Craig.
00:44:23James, 10 carries.
00:44:24That man right there, 10 carries thus far in the ball game for just over 60 yards, 63 yards.
00:44:32Third down and a yard.
00:44:45And that is the Golden Domer out of Notre Dame.
00:44:53Bob Golick, who jumps.
00:44:55Surely he must have been tricked.
00:44:58First start, number 11, Eason.
00:45:01I told you, he was tricked.
00:45:03Vindicated again.
00:45:11Listen, there's one thing we Golden Numbers can count to three, by gosh.
00:45:15And I don't care who, all of our graduates can count to three.
00:45:17Well, I'll tell you what, when you come from Notre Dame, there's no question who the 12th man is.
00:45:27Third down and six now.
00:45:29Yeah, that changes the play selection, Bob.
00:45:31It sure does.
00:45:32It went from a very preferable offensive situation to a very treacherous one.
00:45:4162,139 fans are coming alive.
00:45:47Al Gross.
00:46:10A championship play for the strong safety, Al Gross.
00:46:13Diagnosed it, coming over, putting the big kibosh.
00:46:16Boom, right?
00:46:17Perfect timing.
00:46:19Irving Fryer doing a good job going up for the ball.
00:46:22Or Stanley Morgan, rather.
00:46:23But Al Gross coming over from his safety position, putting the hit, timely hit, on the receiver, breaking up the play.
00:46:31Now the Patriots now, three of ten in third down situation.
00:46:36Not good.
00:46:37Here's Camarillo, averaging almost 43 yards a punt today.
00:46:41Oh, it is almost blocked.
00:46:42But he gets off a beauty.
00:46:45That's Clarence Weathers.
00:46:50Moves it across the 36, out near the 37-yard line before Brian Ingram.
00:46:55A reserve linebacker brings him down.
00:46:58A 52-yard punt for Rich Camarillo.
00:47:01Patriot fans take note.
00:47:05Look what's happening in the Orange Bowl.
00:47:07The Steelers over Miami 20-17 midway through the fourth period.
00:47:11That's Brennan in motion.
00:47:12Kozar, the give to Mack.
00:47:15Running room.
00:47:15Still on his feet.
00:47:17Spins to the 43-yard line.
00:47:21Kevin Mack running in heavy traffic.
00:47:24What an effort by the young rookie.
00:47:26The Cleveland coaches are very excited about this young man.
00:47:29Coach Marty Schottenheimer says we've got to get the ball more to Kevin Mack, whether it's by the run or the pass.
00:47:35Paul Farron pulling from his left tackle spot there all the way to the right side, throwing a good block.
00:47:39Mack continuing breaking one tackle there.
00:47:41Keeps the legs driving.
00:47:42Spinning.
00:47:44He's playing good, excited football.
00:47:4618 for 96 yards.
00:47:48Kevin Mack threatening to go over the century mark here again.
00:47:51Quite a rookie, Phil.
00:47:52First down, 43.
00:47:56Kozar now unloads.
00:47:59And it is intercepted.
00:48:02Fred Marion, his second pickoff of 1985.
00:48:06And, oh, what a spot it comes in.
00:48:09The pass intended for Brian Brennan.
00:48:12Bernie misread that coverage.
00:48:15He puts the ball ahead.
00:48:15No, I should not have thrown this ball.
00:48:17Freddie's just sitting there.
00:48:19Once again, Freddie, his former teammate with the Hurricanes,
00:48:21is happy to have received that pass from his old teammate.
00:48:26But I don't know really why.
00:48:27Bernie apparently just did not see Freddie Marion sitting there.
00:48:31Big turnover.
00:48:36Kozar, there's his numbers.
00:48:38Not bad at all for his first outing.
00:48:44First and ten Patriots.
00:48:47Asin unloads.
00:48:48It is caught.
00:48:52Eason was hit by Bob Golick just as he released the ball.
00:48:56The pass caught by Lynn Dawson.
00:49:02Tackle that time filled by number 58, Scott Nicholas.
00:49:05This playing field today is filled with former University of Miami Hurricanes.
00:49:09Indianapolis landed on Buffalo 49-10 for Hank Bullough.
00:49:18Boy, what a first game as head coach for the Buffalo Bills.
00:49:22Eason going long here.
00:49:27Stanley Morgan, his second sensational catch of the day.
00:49:33Don Rogers and Larry Brazil both back there looking at each other as if to say,
00:49:38how did Juggs catch that ball?
00:49:40I don't understand how he caught it myself.
00:49:45Sees the ball.
00:49:47Comes back inside.
00:49:48Larry Brazil did not see the ball in time.
00:49:50Juggs did see it.
00:49:51Stopped.
00:49:52Came back.
00:49:52Looking at it from another angle here.
00:49:54Coming back inside.
00:49:55What a wonderful catch.
00:49:56He is having some kind of game.
00:49:59How about six catches for 140 yards?
00:50:03Friar in motion to give us to this side.
00:50:10Robert Weathers.
00:50:12Step on when Al Gross and Weathers is rolled out of bounds inside the Cleveland Brown 20-yard line.
00:50:24Stanley Morgan with 104 yards today.
00:50:30140 yards on six catches today.
00:50:34You got to go all the way back to 1980 to find the last time a Patriot receiver
00:50:39had caught more than 100 yards against the Cleveland Browns.
00:50:43And it was Stanley Morgan.
00:50:47Weathers.
00:50:49Hammers his way down near the 15.
00:50:55Do you know that no Patriot runner, Bob,
00:50:58has ever rushed for 100 yards against the Browns?
00:51:01That's saying something.
00:51:03Well, it is.
00:51:03And I don't think we're about to see a 100-yard runner today, either.
00:51:05There's Steve Grogan.
00:51:11He is signaling in the signs.
00:51:14And he is not questioning Tony Eason's dental work.
00:51:18Seven minutes and one second to play.
00:51:23Oh, what a finish we have here in Cleveland.
00:51:25The Browns 24, the Patriots 20.
00:51:28The fans are barking and booing.
00:51:29Mosey Tatupu down near the 11-yard line.
00:51:37A flag is down at the 10-yard line.
00:51:49Yeah, there's no question who the short yardage man is for the Patriots.
00:51:52Tatupu.
00:51:54What a short yardage name.
00:51:59Well, he is to the Patriots, Bob, what John Riggins is to the Skins.
00:52:03With every five-yard face mask foul on number 51 defense, it's still first down.
00:52:09Oh, my.
00:52:10Move it five yards closer.
00:52:13It'll be first down now and five from the six-yard line.
00:52:19Eddie Johnson on the violation.
00:52:21Chicago leading Tampa Bay now 20-12.
00:52:26From four yards out, broke open a 13-12 ballgame.
00:52:32They're midway through the fourth quarter at Tampa Bay.
00:52:35And Philadelphia trailing the Saints 23-14.
00:52:4012 yards down here, Phil.
00:52:47Weathers.
00:52:47Oh, he runs headlong into Bob Golding at the five.
00:52:51No game.
00:52:53And I'll bet you there's some barking going on down here right now.
00:52:56That's the barking end of the stadium.
00:52:58The fans are barking and booing and making life generally miserable for the New England offense right now.
00:53:03Bob Goldick having a dynamic second half here.
00:53:08That's how they draw it up.
00:53:09Put the head in the numbers and drive the legs.
00:53:12Now the Patriots trying to run against the second toughest defense in all of football against the rush.
00:53:21Don Rogers, the enforcer.
00:53:35Clay Matthews also beating Derek Ramsey, the tight end.
00:53:39Chalked that one up to the Dogs.
00:53:40They are dominating the line of scrimmage down here near their end zone.
00:53:45Don Rogers coming from his free safety spot.
00:53:47Put the big hit on it.
00:53:48But the real play was made by Clay Matthews who defeated the attempted block by tight end Derek Ramsey.
00:53:54Second down and goal from the four-yard line.
00:53:59Second and goal.
00:54:01They might put the ball in the air here, Phil.
00:54:02Little dump pass to Tupu.
00:54:13Into the three-yard line and he'll get nothing more.
00:54:16Boy, Eason did a remarkable job unloading.
00:54:20He sure did.
00:54:21That was like the old two-handed basketball chess pass.
00:54:25Goal Akin, Clay Matthews right in his face.
00:54:29Clay Matthews coming in from his left side here.
00:54:31It's got him by the ankles.
00:54:32The old basketball pass.
00:54:36Once again, number 20, Don Rogers.
00:54:40Second charge timeout.
00:54:42Tom Cousineau has come into the ballgame.
00:54:45His first action today.
00:54:48Look at this score.
00:54:49Oh, do we have a finish.
00:54:51Bell plays here.
00:54:52Sorry, that's Craig James.
00:54:54And he is out of bounds at the one-yard line.
00:55:04Craig James doesn't like it.
00:55:05He thought he broke the plane.
00:55:06Thought he got in the end zone.
00:55:08Difficult to see from this angle, Phil.
00:55:09I thought he may have been in myself.
00:55:11He does not like it.
00:55:13Take a look at it from the other angle here.
00:55:15Another hit by Don James.
00:55:22Impossible for us to tell here.
00:55:23I'll tell you what he was doing.
00:55:24He was carrying the ball on the right side of his body.
00:55:27If he'd been able to carry the ball on the left side,
00:55:28the inside shoulder,
00:55:30that ball may have crossed the plane.
00:55:32The side judge, Merrill Douglas,
00:55:35is the one who indicated no touchdown.
00:55:39Oh, what a finish.
00:55:40Fourth down and a lot of foot to go.
00:55:44Out of bounds.
00:55:45That's an excellent call.
00:55:47Excellent call.
00:55:48Watch for number 30.
00:55:57No.
00:55:57No.
00:56:02No.
00:56:32Right here is the play of the game.
00:56:38This is Craig James going out of bounds.
00:56:40The ball in his right hand now.
00:56:43And this was a good call by the referees.
00:56:45If Craig had been carrying the ball in his left arm,
00:56:48on the inside arm,
00:56:48I believe he would have gotten in the end zone.
00:56:51Not to fault Craig James.
00:56:52He's carrying the ball where he should be.
00:56:53But that was a very, very critical play
00:56:57by the defense.
00:56:58This ball game is not over yet.
00:57:00The Browns are backed up.
00:57:02They have turned it over five times today.
00:57:07Kevin Mack running in behind Dan Pike and Ricky Bolden.
00:57:11Moves it out near the six.
00:57:13That super little line clutch by the Browns, Bill,
00:57:15was a very important football play.
00:57:17That gives them a little working room now.
00:57:19They had six inches.
00:57:20Any mistake down there was critical.
00:57:22Now they've got five yards plus ten yards of end zone.
00:57:24They've got a little bit of elbow room.
00:57:26Very important play for the Cleveland Browns.
00:57:29Liner is coming out of the ball game.
00:57:30Ryan Brennan, Ozzie Newsome,
00:57:39and Harry Holt.
00:57:41A double tight end formation.
00:57:43After the eye formation on second down and six.
00:57:46That's back again.
00:57:47This time not much.
00:57:48He'll be short of the first down.
00:57:54Steve Nelson and Larry McGrew, the inside linebackers, on the tackle.
00:57:58Also, big Kenneth Sims, number 77, slanted in on a slant charge from the defensive left end position
00:58:06and makes the play from behind.
00:58:08Kenneth Sims grabbing the ball carry by the ankles and bringing him down.
00:58:11Good play by Ken Sims.
00:58:13Kevin Mack, the rookie out of Clemson, 19 carries for 100 yards.
00:58:20Second consecutive week, Bob Kutchenberg.
00:58:22The rookie has gone over the 100-yard part.
00:58:26They've got a pair of winners there in Beiner and Mack.
00:58:28He did not get the first down.
00:58:37He did not get it.
00:58:38And the Browns will have to give it up again.
00:58:41Excellent defensive stand here by the Patriots.
00:58:44Showing some character, Bill.
00:58:45Now, keep in mind, with the clock ticking down at 2.49, and it continues to run,
00:58:52the Browns have three timeouts.
00:58:55The Patriots have but one.
00:59:01Very important defensive stand.
00:59:03Had the Browns gotten that first down, the ball game would have been over.
00:59:06But as it is now, the Patriots will get the ball back around midfield
00:59:10or perhaps even in Cleveland Brown territory.
00:59:13Pryor at the midfield stripe.
00:59:15Gossett, one punt today, and it was not a good one.
00:59:21Patriots sending everybody.
00:59:23And over in, not a good kick.
00:59:25Pryor at the 42-yard line could have a return.
00:59:30To the 29, and he's down there.
00:59:34No flags on the return.
00:59:36A 34-yard punt.
00:59:38He's got a barn burner, Phil.
00:59:4316-yard return by that man.
00:59:46He had an 85-yarder for a touchdown two weeks ago against the Bills.
00:59:50We're right back where we were about a minute and a half ago.
00:59:52Two minutes and seven seconds left.
00:59:54Plenty of time for the Patriots.
00:59:56Time is not really a factor here.
00:59:57We're going to see what Mr. Eason and Mr. Berry were talking about on the sideline here.
01:00:01Derrick Ramsey has gone out to the far sideline to tie it in.
01:00:07Now there are three wide outs for the Patriots.
01:00:11No secret here what they want to do.
01:00:13Pryor and Morgan to the near side.
01:00:15Eason, what can it see?
01:00:20Rick Jones now throws over the middle, I believe.
01:00:23It is Tony Collins, and it is.
01:00:25And the 21-yard line, Scott Nicholas covers it.
01:00:29We have reached a two-minute warning.
01:00:31The clock stops.
01:00:32It's the Cleveland Browns leading the Patriots 24-20.
01:00:37Oh, do we have a shootout from Cleveland Stadium.
01:00:40Raymond Berry, Marty Schottenheimer on your right.
01:00:48There are the damages.
01:00:49Cleveland 24, the Patriots 20.
01:00:52The two-minute warning, and Tony Eason is on.
01:00:55Bob Kuchenberg, you have been involved in an awful lot of these type of ballgames.
01:00:59They've got to drain you physically and emotionally.
01:01:02This is why head coaches make the kind of money that they do.
01:01:05I don't think there's enough money in the world to compensate for the stress they're going through right now.
01:01:09Phil, number 96 in the Browns, Reggie Kemp, was just taken out of the ballgame with a leg injury.
01:01:14That could be a very important development because he is their leading sacker.
01:01:18Dave Pozzoli, third-year nose tackle, has slid in now to the left defensive end position.
01:01:24So it'll be Pozzoli, Golick, and Carl Hairston.
01:01:28The Browns have committed five turnovers today.
01:01:32The Patriots three.
01:01:35Eason, 20 of 36.
01:01:36He has over 300 yards.
01:01:40Second down and three.
01:01:42Little play action.
01:01:43Eason looking right.
01:01:44Got Collins wide open on the left side.
01:01:46This time he throws it out of bounds and again wide.
01:01:50Eason could have run it for seven or eight yards.
01:01:52Right now, let's go to Bob Costas for this update.
01:01:55Bobby?
01:01:55Phil and Miami, they've got the same score as you have in Cleveland.
01:02:00The Dolphins, with 47 seconds to play, get this two-yard touchdown run from Lorenzo Hampton, the rookie, to go in front of Pittsburgh 24-20.
01:02:07They then intercept the desperation Steeler pass and appear to have it wrapped up with 10 seconds left.
01:02:12Bob, you know what's interesting about that score you just gave us?
01:02:16Here's the man sitting to my right, Bob Kuchenberg, made a living on those kind of plays.
01:02:22A minute, 53 seconds to play here.
01:02:25The crowd exhorting the defense on.
01:02:27Eason cannot get it out to Collins and a fine coverage by Clay Matthews.
01:02:34Phil, what I don't like is the play before this, Tony Eason had wide open real estate in front of him.
01:02:41Here you see Clay Matthews trailing the receiver, obstructing his vision just enough to make it a very difficult catch, and he couldn't get it done.
01:02:49But the play before this, Tony Eason had third down and second down and three yards to go.
01:02:53He had at least 10 yards of open field in front of him. He should have blown the ball.
01:02:57This bat is coming alive on foot down and three with a minute and 49 to play.
01:03:03This is to all the marbles.
01:03:23Big daddy, Carl Harrison, the oldest dog of them all, makes the big play, Phil.
01:03:39Carl Harrison in his 10th year, most of his career spent in Philadelphia, makes the play of plays here in this long day in Cleveland, Ohio.
01:03:47Now for the Patriots, you can again go back to what has plagued this team ever since the regular season began for the most part, Bob,
01:03:54and that is a lack of being able to move the ball on a consistent basis.
01:03:59I really don't understand, though, why Tony Eason on that second down play didn't run the ball.
01:04:06He had at least 10 yards. He might have even gotten into the end zone because he had some red jerseys and thunder.
01:04:11A minute 43 seconds to play. One timeout is all that the Patriots have.
01:04:17Kozar gives it to Kevin Mack. He is on his feet at the 35-yard line.
01:04:23Back on the afternoon is now 114 yards.
01:04:36There's the final now for Miami. Bob Costas told you about it a moment ago.
01:04:41The Dolphins, in a come-from-behind effort, knock off the Steelers 24-20.
01:04:46Well, Phil, that's bad news for the Patriots, and it's very good news for the Cleveland Browns.
01:04:53They're inside a minute. 59 seconds. Kozar goes down. And look out.
01:05:07Andre Tippett came blitzing through and put the shoulder to Bernie Kozar as he was genuflecting, touching down.
01:05:14I think it was a legal play on Andre Tippett's part, but very unnecessary.
01:05:19Yeah, you saw Kozar and Ronnie Lippett sort of smiling at one another.
01:05:24Of course, Lippett and Kozar playing together at Miami.
01:05:27I want to thank our producer, Kenny Edmondson, our director, Ralph Abrams.
01:05:37Oh, a job well done, gentlemen.
01:05:39Our entire crew here at Cleveland Stadium.
01:05:42Wow, what a ball game we have had for you. 38 seconds to play.
01:05:47Excuse me, Phil, that was not Andre Tippett.
01:05:49That was Bernie Kozar's old teammate, Ronnie Lippett, putting the wood to him.
01:05:53Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
01:06:01Beiner and Fred Marian.
01:06:04Ernest Beiner and Freddie Marian.
01:06:09Bill, that's frustration.
01:06:10It's frustration coming out from the part of the Patriots.
01:06:12They've had a very discouraging beginning this year, and once again, they've let a ballgame get away that they could have won,
01:06:19could have and perhaps even should have won here in the closing minutes and that is a very
01:06:23frustrated group of new england patriots on that football field right now third charge time of
01:06:30new england now beiner and raymond claiborne or john right there in the center of your screen
01:06:39number 44 in white and 26 in red
01:06:42clock stopped with 26 seconds to play there's a man who ought to be about as bad as anybody on
01:06:51the playing field raymond barry but he's probably one of the cooler men in the entire stadium
01:06:55that's right bill he you can't tell from looking at his face whether he's winning or losing but
01:07:00he's got to be very frustrated right now and on the threshold of victory here and then to make
01:07:05some critical mistakes here right in the uh tailing minutes now don't forget stay tuned
01:07:10the second half of our nfl doubleheader here on nbc comes your way kansas city on the raiders most of
01:07:16you will see san diego is at the kingdome the jets travel to riverfront in houston meets the
01:07:21denver broncos at mile high all coming up next here on nbc
01:07:26kosar goes down and that ought to just about do it that should be the last play of this ball game
01:07:36and bob it was a game that early on where we said the patriots would have to get the ball to their
01:07:42wide receivers they did it but quite frankly tony eason simply unable to lead his team into the end
01:07:48zone tony made a giant stride in the right direction he was played more aggressively today
01:07:53got the ball to his wide receivers but what's going on here phil a lot of frustration coming out
01:08:00now you can't believe it you'd almost think the afc championship was at stake
01:08:09there's no time remaining this ball game is over i'll tell you what the patriots better be a little
01:08:16bit careful here i know they're frustrated but it wouldn't take too much to get some of these dogs
01:08:20out of the stands down here on the field
01:08:22the final score the cleveland browns 24 the new england patriots 20 and in the last four minutes
01:08:31of this game the patriots had not one chance to win it two outstanding opportunities to possibly
01:08:37win this ball game a very difficult day for coach barry uh took the uh on the threshold here just
01:08:42dipping the job done in the crunch all right the final score the browns 24 the patriots 20 a big win
01:08:49for the browns another disappointing loss for the patriots we'll be back in a moment
