00:00:00Tony Eason, though, had a couple of good streaks.
00:00:03Well, he had that one drive where he threw a lot on first down, moved the ball down.
00:00:06They didn't get it in the end zone, but they're both playing better.
00:00:09Eason's playing better than he has.
00:00:11And, of course, Wilson, I think, coming in, he was a little nervous, a little jumpy.
00:00:14Of course, the interception showed that.
00:00:16I think he settled down a little bit, but you're not going to get much rushing yard on either one of these defenses.
00:00:21You're going to have to throw the football.
00:00:23All right, Bob, as a regular feature of our telecast,
00:00:25we spotlight the Bob Greasy keys at the start of the game.
00:00:30What about the keys that you touched upon earlier?
00:00:33Well, I think Mark Wilson has played well, but I don't think he's played well enough for the Raiders to win.
00:00:38I think, like I said, they have to get more into the passing game, not much running,
00:00:41because the Patriots are tough to run against.
00:00:45The New England offense has not allowed a sack, but by the same token,
00:00:49they've really not controlled the line of scrimmage.
00:00:51The game, obviously, is up for grabs, and those keys still hold.
00:00:55All right, the Raiders' offensive touchdown was a hookup between this guy, Mark Wilson,
00:01:02and the speedster, Doakie Williams.
00:01:05And what happened was that number 85, Doakie Williams, went down and broke to the outside.
00:01:11Now, 42 Lippitt intercepted that pass early on.
00:01:14And then what happened was later on, 85 went down and out and then went straight down the field,
00:01:20and he was beaten, Lippitt was beaten, number 42 was beaten on the play,
00:01:24and here we'll take a look at it.
00:01:27Doakie Williams will go down, out, and then up.
00:01:32And the pass is going to be completed for the touchdown, but good protection for Mark Wilson.
00:01:40Telestrator is obviously not working. We're going to try and draw that play up for you.
00:01:44But here's the other key play in the ballgame, the snap that goes through Ray Guy's hands.
00:01:49He picks it up, tries to pick it up, and Andre Tippett scoops it up and runs it in for the touchdown
00:01:54for the score for the Patriots.
00:01:57And that's the score that is given to England, a 20-14 lead as we head to the second half.
00:02:03Not much in terms of rushing by either the Raiders or the Patriots.
00:02:07I think the key thing are the turnovers. The turnovers have played a big role.
00:02:10The Raiders running one back for the touchdown, the only one that the Patriots have committed,
00:02:15and the Patriots taking two turnovers from the Raiders and turning them into 10 points.
00:02:22Allen 8 rushes 32 yards. Collins has handled it 10 times for only 30 yards.
00:02:28Here's Stephan Starring on the return.
00:02:33Starring out to the 25-yard line, Trey Junkin, Stacey Turan combined on the stop.
00:02:42And Tony Eason leads the offensive unit out of the field.
00:02:47Eason in his third season out of Illinois, a first-round draft pick back in 1983.
00:02:57And he will start first down from his 24-yard line.
00:03:03And they come out of the eye.
00:03:08Mosey Tatupu now in the backfield with Tony Collins.
00:03:12Here's Collins, led by Tatupu.
00:03:16Mike Davis able to trip him up.
00:03:22That New England offensive line, Brian Holloway and Steve Moore at the tackles.
00:03:27John Hannah, Ron Wooten at the guards. Pete Brock is at center.
00:03:33Steve Moore emerging as the starter when Darrell Haley was sidelined.
00:03:40And so Moore, a three-year pro out of Tennessee State, has played well.
00:03:46Second down and eight off the two-yard pickup.
00:03:50Eason throwing, intended for Irving Pryor.
00:03:56Covered by Lester Hayes.
00:04:00That'll be a third down and eight.
00:04:10And there's head coach Tom Flores out of Frisno, California, in his seventh year as the Raider head coach.
00:04:22Tom Flores owning four Super Bowl rings, including one as a player and another as an assistant coach, two as a head coach.
00:04:35And a penalty flag is down.
00:04:39The pass intended for Cedric Jones.
00:04:43Lester Hayes covering, and it will be interference on Hayes.
00:04:52Pass interference, number 37 defense, first and 10.
00:04:58That'll cost 22 yards.
00:05:01See Rod Martin coming in, 53, is picked up by the back, which is a good protection.
00:05:06Eason throws it off balance. Now watch here. Cedric Jones sees the ball, making a play to come back,
00:05:11and the problem is Lester Hayes did not see it, reached his arm out and interfered with the opportunity to catch the football.
00:05:17First down midfield, Craig James dancing, but 77, Lyle Alzado able to join him as a partner.
00:05:26And again, a flare-up.
00:05:30We had a brief scuffle late in the first half. Alzado trying to fire up the Raiders.
00:05:36I think something was said, maybe James may have said something to me, like, I'm down, don't hit me so hard or whatever.
00:05:42Maybe a little bit more forceful than that, but Alzado can get that defense fired up.
00:05:47He is the longtime senior citizen of that defensive line, has said that this will probably be his last year,
00:05:53and he knows how to psych that defense up and fire them up.
00:05:57Second out of 12, Paul Fairchild now at left guard, replacing John Hanna.
00:06:03Fairchild, a second-year man from Kansas.
00:06:09Tony Collins on the reception, but the strong safety, Mike Davis, right there.
00:06:17The Raider defensive line now, Marv, getting some pressure on Eason.
00:06:20He's not taking the sack, but he's having to deliver the ball a little bit before he would like to.
00:06:29Well, not much doing in the giant Philadelphia game.
00:06:32Finally a score, Paul McFadden, a 41-yard field goal for the Eagles.
00:06:37Eagles try to avenge an earlier season loss to the Giants.
00:06:41Third down and eight at midfield.
00:06:46Eason taking a long look, again a flag down, intended for Derek Ramsey,
00:06:52covered by Stacey Curran, and looks to be a hole.
00:07:00That is referee Gordon McConner.
00:07:13Holding, number 66 offense, finally declined.
00:07:18And that is Paul Fairchild, who came on for John Hanna, who's had an assortment of injuries.
00:07:26Fairchild right here, playing in the place of John Hanna, who we were told may be out of the game a little bit,
00:07:32blocking on Howie Long. Long gets by him with an arm under, and he just grabs a hold of him.
00:07:37But better that than lose your quarterback.
00:07:41And here is Rich Camarillo.
00:07:49And Colton Walker let it go, and it's out of bounds at the two.
00:07:55So Camarillo with the beauty, a 48-yard punt.
00:08:03And there is the managing general partner of the Los Angeles Raiders, Al Davis,
00:08:08who has not enjoyed what he has seen thus far today.
00:08:14Marcus Allen out across the five-yard line.
00:08:20McGrew and Blackman on the stop. Check that it was Frank Hawkins on the carry.
00:08:26And we're told John Hanna, who missed the last series, replaced by Fairchild,
00:08:32is suffering from dehydration and may be able to get back to it later on.
00:08:37Second down and seven from the five.
00:08:46Allen Hawkins, the running backs, play action.
00:08:50And Wilson with the bop.
00:08:54Oh, what a catch!
00:08:56Koki Williams!
00:08:58Stopped by Raymond Claiborne, and there for the first time in several weeks
00:09:04is the big play offense of the L.A. Raiders.
00:09:08Coming out of his own end zone as we take a look at Raymond Berry,
00:09:11a play action fake.
00:09:13Holds the linebackers and the pass rush. Good protection.
00:09:17He's able to step up in the pocket, see very well.
00:09:20Now it's just a jump ball. He's covered.
00:09:22There's good coverage by Claiborne. Now it's a jump ball.
00:09:25Koki Williams has inside. Claiborne goes up for it.
00:09:29But the receiver comes down with the football.
00:09:31And Koki Williams is the Raiders' deep threat,
00:09:34particularly with Cliff Branch at the end of a superb career.
00:09:38Branch's sideline, 55-yard pass play, his second catch of the day.
00:09:45That's Henry Lawrence, the right tackle, heading off.
00:09:50Lawrence limping off.
00:09:54And Kevin Belcher, a rookie from Wisconsin,
00:09:58a seventh-round draft pick, replacing Lawrence at right tackle.
00:10:05So Jordan, the former Patriot, and Belcher at the tackles.
00:10:09Davis and Marvin at the guards, and Don Bosbar in at center.
00:10:14It would be a surprise, Marv, to see him go again deep on an early down.
00:10:18First down at the Patriot 40-yard line.
00:10:21And Allen looking to throw.
00:10:26They go to the halfback option, which has been executed very well by Allen.
00:10:32Intended for Jesse Hester.
00:10:35But a flag is down.
00:10:41There was no flag on the play.
00:10:43The contact by the defensive back was legal.
00:10:49Here you take another look at it. The Raiders always pressing the issue.
00:10:53Offense, they want to put pressure on you.
00:10:55They just got to the 40-yard line.
00:10:57The first play they do is a play-action pass, a little flip back.
00:11:01The man was open.
00:11:02He threw the ball back over his shoulder,
00:11:04so he had to come back and allow Claiborne, 26, to break it up.
00:11:07But they had it, didn't hit it.
00:11:09And the flag was waved off.
00:11:11So Gordon McCarter says, no flag, second and ten.
00:11:16Wilson stepping up, throwing a beautiful pass.
00:11:20But it died.
00:11:21It looked like it was headed toward Jim Smith.
00:11:25And that fell short, and Fred Marion actually had a shot at it.
00:11:30The ball was just under thrown.
00:11:32Smith was behind.
00:11:34As we take a look at the pass rush of Tippett, 56, on the rookie Belcher, 76.
00:11:41The quarterback steps up in the pocket.
00:11:44Tippett doesn't get his man, but Smith was open on that play.
00:11:48Wilson just didn't get the ball out to him.
00:11:51So the Raiders now with a gambling series.
00:11:55They go for the bomb, succeed.
00:11:58Marcus Allen looks to throw.
00:12:00So he's now one for two, throwing the football this season.
00:12:09And Wilson had nowhere to go, being chased by Ben Thomas and Larry McGrew.
00:12:16Thomas, the rookie from Auburn, number 99.
00:12:20Looks like he's shaken up, Mark.
00:12:27And Wilson hobbling toward the sideline.
00:12:32There is the backup quarterback, Rusty Hilger, a rookie from Oklahoma State.
00:12:40It's fourth down, so they'll go for the field goal.
00:12:44Scrambling around with good protection.
00:12:46Thomas chases him.
00:12:47Let's see if we can see.
00:12:48Right there, it looks like he hurt his left or his right.
00:12:52He did it before he fell down, obviously.
00:12:55That's one of the things about artificial turf fields, Mark.
00:12:58The traction on the rubber-soled shoe is so good with the artificial turf
00:13:03that you can hurt yourself without any contact.
00:13:08And Ray Guy will punt for the sixth time today.
00:13:12He's out at midfield.
00:13:16And looking to angle.
00:13:18Not able to do it.
00:13:24They'll bring it out to the 20, a 34-yard kick by Guy.
00:13:29And a timeout called with four minutes gone by in this third quarter.
00:13:37The Raiders medical staff working on quarterback Mark Wilson
00:13:42as the Patriots heed for early third quarter.
00:13:48Robert Weathers getting a second life.
00:13:52Reggie McKenzie, the rookie from Tennessee, combining with Matt Millen.
00:14:02Here's the battle in the trenches.
00:14:0475 is Howie Long playing over Steve Moore, the third-year player.
00:14:10He kind of scoots around.
00:14:11Moore picks up the guard and knocks him off.
00:14:14Moore didn't get his block, but Howie Long busted up the play.
00:14:18Second down and seven.
00:14:19Patriots not able to do it on the ground.
00:14:22And Weathers again on a slant.
00:14:24Robert Weathers in his fourth season out of Arizona State.
00:14:29And Mark Wilson, we're told, with an injured right ankle
00:14:33and his return up in the air.
00:14:36It's a third down and four for New England.
00:14:39And Eason throwing the middle and bat it down and ten it for Friar.
00:14:45Mike Davis got a piece of it.
00:14:49He had his man open.
00:14:50He just overthrew the ball.
00:14:52Mike Davis is right here.
00:14:54The return is going to come down and right in front of him.
00:14:59Eason not throwing the ball well on this play.
00:15:02As you see him come off the line of scrimmage.
00:15:04He's open right there.
00:15:05He threw it more to the inside expecting Friar to move in,
00:15:08and Friar just hooked around right where he was.
00:15:12And following that early scoring flurry,
00:15:15particularly in the first quarter and early second quarter,
00:15:18things have certainly calmed down.
00:15:20Camarillo getting it away.
00:15:22This is Holton Walker on the return.
00:15:26To the Raider, 45-yard line.
00:15:30Six minutes have gone by.
00:15:32In this third quarter, 42-yard cut, 12-yard return.
00:15:40With Mark Wilson sidelined by an ankle injury,
00:15:43we will now see the National Football League debut.
00:15:46For the rookie out of Oklahoma State, Rusty Hilger.
00:15:49What is going through his mind right now?
00:15:51He's nervous. There's no doubt about that.
00:15:53They have a lot of confidence in this young man.
00:15:55They think he may be a quarterback of the future for him.
00:15:57But I think he's better off coming off the bench in the middle of a game
00:16:00than he is practicing all week and having to think about it.
00:16:03So if he's going to play well, this might be the time to do it.
00:16:07And he hands off to Marcus Allen.
00:16:10The good news for Rusty is that Henry Lawrence is back in at right tackle.
00:16:14He left a moment ago.
00:16:17Rusty Hilger.
00:16:19Raiders' sixth-round draft pick.
00:16:21He can throw long and can run.
00:16:23Had an impressive preseason.
00:16:26The all-time passing leader for the Cowboys of Oklahoma State,
00:16:30setting a host of records.
00:16:33Second down and three at the New England 47.
00:16:38Williams in motion and again to the ground.
00:16:41And a first down picked up by Allen.
00:16:44Larry McGrew on the cover-up.
00:16:47Cowboys don't normally call the plays.
00:16:50They usually let their quarterbacks call them,
00:16:52but they're sending them in for Hilger at this point
00:16:55and sticking to the ground game just to get him a little bit of a –
00:16:58as we see the scores go by on the bottom of your screen,
00:17:01just to give him a little confidence, get him in the flow of the ballgame.
00:17:05And now the Giants have tied up the Eagles in the third quarter.
00:17:09St. Louis in front of Greenberg.
00:17:11Marcus Allen 10 carries, 44 yards, so it's been quiet thus far.
00:17:16And again to Allen, flag thrown.
00:17:21Allen attempting to change direction, stopped by Julius Adams.
00:17:28Incidentally, this is the final year for Julius Adams.
00:17:31He says number 85 will retire after 85 at the age of 37.
00:17:37Unless he changes his jersey number.
00:17:40286.
00:17:42Get to fight Stanley Morgan for that one.
00:17:45All right, Detroit over Tampa Bay in the third.
00:17:49And Minnesota leads Buffalo in the third quarter.
00:17:53Here's Gorton McConnell.
00:17:55Left side of the defensive line.
00:17:57Will he accept that first down five?
00:18:02First down and five for the Raiders at the New England 37.
00:18:06This is the area of the field where the Raiders like to put the ball up deep.
00:18:10The defense don't think you're going to throw deep
00:18:12just because you're on their 35, 36, 37-yard line,
00:18:15but the Raiders have already gone deep twice from this area today.
00:18:19Bump of a snap and able to hang on.
00:18:26Right here, let's pause briefly for station identification.
00:18:29This is the NBC Television Network.
00:18:32You're watching WXFL Channel 8, Tampa, St. Petersburg.
00:18:39Marv Albert, Bob Greasy from Foxborough.
00:18:41Beautiful day here in the New England area.
00:18:44The Patriots leading the Raiders 20-14.
00:18:47Rusty Hilger has taken over for Mark Wilson at quarterback for the L.A. Raiders.
00:18:52Wilson replacing the injured Jim Plunkett.
00:18:56Dislocating his shoulder last week in the loss to the 49ers.
00:18:59Here's Hilger throwing for the first time in the ball.
00:19:02He had Jim Smith wide open and threw a fastball that was high and wide.
00:19:11That's exactly right, Marv.
00:19:13He had him so wide open, I'm sure Hilger couldn't believe it.
00:19:18He makes a rookie mistake.
00:19:20He had him so wide open, he tried to drill it in there.
00:19:22He didn't have to do this.
00:19:23You see McGrew blitzing up the middle.
00:19:25All he had to do was put a little bit more air under the ball.
00:19:28Too flat a throw, wide open.
00:19:30There's not a Patriot around him.
00:19:33If he would have just given him, as we see Wilson going to the locker room,
00:19:37if he would have just given the ball a little bit more air, more time to catch the football.
00:19:42It's a third down and five at the Patriots 37.
00:19:46Allen peels off.
00:19:52Incomplete.
00:19:55Ronnie Libet covering on the play.
00:19:59So, Hilger with the opportunity.
00:20:02He had Smith wide open just as, ironically,
00:20:05Mark Wilson was leaving the field heading to the clubhouse.
00:20:11You know, there has been talk that the Raiders are looking for yet another quarterback.
00:20:15Larry King had it on the NFL 85 show that Richard Todd of the New Orleans Saints
00:20:22is a man the Raiders are interested in.
00:20:24That has been talked about earlier this season.
00:20:28And another name that has cropped up, Doug Wood.
00:20:32Here's Guy.
00:20:35Again, a directional punt.
00:20:40And let's see.
00:20:43We'll have to wait and see where they mark it.
00:20:45Just inside the tent.
00:20:47So, a good one by Guy.
00:20:53And there's the rookie wide receiver, Jesse Hester,
00:20:56who has similar muscular structure to that of our producer, David Neal.
00:21:03Being taped up.
00:21:05The Patriots will start out from the nine.
00:21:09Ray Guy with a 28-yard punt.
00:21:11And his punting statistics will not look pretty,
00:21:13but he's been able to angle out several within the 20-yard line.
00:21:20So, forget about statistics when it comes to the punting of Guy.
00:21:23Nice move by James.
00:21:25Run out by McIlroy.
00:21:28James turning it up.
00:21:32Craig James just short of a first down on that last run.
00:21:37It's second and less than a yard at the 19.
00:21:41Collins has the first down.
00:21:45Mike Davis, the strong safety, making the stop.
00:21:47Stacey Turan replacing Lester Hayes at the left quarterback position for this serve.
00:21:55Turan's a fine prospect.
00:21:57Sixth round draft choice last year.
00:21:59Got a lot of playing time in the nickel situations.
00:22:01He's a good hitter.
00:22:03They're very high on him.
00:22:08New England first down at the 20.
00:22:10All the scoring of the first half.
00:22:11Nothing at all thus far.
00:22:12Third quarter with 6.20 remaining.
00:22:16And here's James.
00:22:19Could not turn it.
00:22:21And run out by Turan and some extra activity out of bounds.
00:22:30Personal foul against the Raiders.
00:22:35Now Lester Hayes returns.
00:22:50Personal foul.
00:22:52Unnecessary roughness.
00:22:54Number 30 on the defense.
00:22:5615 yards.
00:22:57First and 10.
00:23:00Take a look at the end of the play.
00:23:02Turan hits him inbounds.
00:23:06I don't know about that, Marv.
00:23:08That looks just like a foul.
00:23:10He didn't unnecessarily.
00:23:12I've seen a lot worse things go on out of bounds than that.
00:23:16But it is a personal foul.
00:23:18First down at the 39.
00:23:21And Eason with time.
00:23:26And let's see what they call it.
00:23:28It was Van Pelt who thought he had it.
00:23:31But no, it is ruled incomplete.
00:23:33Intended for Derek Ramsey.
00:23:35Brad Van Pelt looking for the interception.
00:23:39Brad Van Pelt in his 13th season out of Michigan State.
00:23:43Joined the Raiders last year.
00:23:45Six weeks into the season following 11 years with the Giants.
00:23:49Dallas and Houston now tied in the third quarter.
00:23:54Zendejas with a 33-yard field goal to tie it.
00:23:59Second and 10 from the 39.
00:24:01That's Friar in motion.
00:24:04Eric Ramsey in a battle with Mike Davis.
00:24:10Ramsey will be coming from the right side of your screen.
00:24:14Pretty good protection.
00:24:17Townsend breaks through.
00:24:19Ramsey the leading receiver on the Patriot team last year when they played
00:24:23with two tight ends with a former Raiders player.
00:24:26He's going to be coming from the right side of your screen.
00:24:29Pretty good protection.
00:24:31Townsend breaks through.
00:24:33Ramsey the leading receiver on the Patriot team last year when they played
00:24:37with two tight ends with a former Raider quarterback in college.
00:24:41He said he's going to have mixed emotions about playing against his old teammates
00:24:45out here today.
00:24:46Says he still has a lot of close friends on the Raiders.
00:24:50Easton is now 8 for 18, 141 yards.
00:24:53Third down and two.
00:24:54And a bullets one.
00:24:59Could not be held by Friar.
00:25:02Friar saw Van McElroy coming from his free safety position.
00:25:06Reading the slant by Friar all the way.
00:25:09And Friar's had some injury problems in the past.
00:25:12But he certainly knew that the free safety was coming.
00:25:15And here's Camarillo for the sixth time today.
00:25:19Patriot coach Raymond Berry has had his receivers needing putty to strengthen
00:25:25their fingers.
00:25:27We may see some more putty.
00:25:29Raymond used to do that when he was playing.
00:25:31And he said strengthen your hands.
00:25:33Not only your receivers, but defensive backs.
00:25:37And Walker comes up for it.
00:25:39Fulton Walker to the 30.
00:25:43And I see Mark Wilson has made his return to the Raider bench.
00:25:4830-yard punt.
00:25:50Nine-yard return.
00:25:51So Wilson to the locker room.
00:25:53And now back on Rusty Hilger around the last series.
00:25:57And Hilger out there right now.
00:26:00The Raiders taking over.
00:26:03At the 30-yard line with 5'12 remaining.
00:26:06You can see how Eason is looking into that sun.
00:26:09When you're going from the left to the right,
00:26:11as you're sitting watching this ball game,
00:26:13you're looking directly into the sun.
00:26:15And it does have an effect on the quarterbacks
00:26:17and all the players that are looking down the field.
00:26:20That was your major complaint about playing here.
00:26:23That was one of them, yes.
00:26:27A quick opener for Marcus Allen.
00:26:31And he's just short of the first down.
00:26:34The free safety Fred Marion on the stop.
00:26:37And we're just under five minutes left in this third quarter.
00:26:40The Raiders come in with a record of 1-2.
00:26:42They open by walloping the Jets 31-0.
00:26:46Coming up with 10 sacks of the Jet quarterbacking duo,
00:26:50Ken O'Brien and Pat Ryan.
00:26:52Lost in Kansas City last week.
00:26:55Lost at home to San Francisco.
00:26:57While the Patriots at 2-1.
00:26:591-1, 2-1.
00:27:02And Allen has the first down.
00:27:05Andre Tippett making the stop.
00:27:15Raiders going to the running game.
00:27:17Henry Lawrence against 77, Ken Sims.
00:27:24Lawrence in a pushing match.
00:27:26He has his balance and is just piled on top of him
00:27:29at the bottom of the pile.
00:27:31But Raiders going to the running game with Hildred in the lineup.
00:27:34And a first down from their 44.
00:27:38And again, Hildred to the ground.
00:27:40Allen out to the 48.
00:27:44Setting up a second and six again.
00:27:46It is Tippett making the stop.
00:27:57And there is Steve Grogan,
00:27:59a man who has not played in some time.
00:28:03It's been a year today, Marv.
00:28:05Took over.
00:28:06Grogan went down on the third, fourth week of the season.
00:28:10And he's been in ever since.
00:28:12Grogan, a man who once starred at 76 consecutive games.
00:28:16Hildred throwing the middle.
00:28:18By Allen.
00:28:20Flag thrown, though.
00:28:22You may have heard the disagreement
00:28:24picked up by our sideline microphone.
00:28:28It's against the Raiders.
00:28:31So they will bring it back.
00:28:38The Raiders are going with some safe passes.
00:28:41We get the call.
00:28:42Holding number 27 offense.
00:28:45Ten yard penalty.
00:28:46Repeat second down.
00:28:48Some shorter passes.
00:28:49Here's Marcus Allen.
00:28:50Christensen will go across to clear.
00:28:52And Marcus will come and try to get the ball in here.
00:28:55Not deep passes.
00:28:57Not long passes.
00:28:58Just some short stuff to get the confidence of the young rookie.
00:29:01And then let him go from there.
00:29:03Good throw.
00:29:04Some traffic.
00:29:06Marcus was saying, don't hit me in the stomach.
00:29:08I'm going to pull my knees up.
00:29:09He didn't have to jump for that ball.
00:29:11Second down, 15.
00:29:12Raiders hit with a penalty for the fifth time.
00:29:14Patriots assessed four times.
00:29:17And Helger putting one deep left side for Hester.
00:29:23Setting up a third down play.
00:29:25Fred Marion, the free safety, covering the rookie, Hester.
00:29:29Mets leading the Pirates four to three
00:29:32as we check out the baseball races.
00:29:34And the Cardinals over the Expos in the sixth inning.
00:29:38Going in.
00:29:39Mets four back.
00:29:40The magic number four, Yankees, in the first of two,
00:29:43leading the Orioles.
00:29:44At the stadium.
00:29:46Toronto six games in front of the Yanks.
00:29:49The magic number in the American League East is at four.
00:29:54Third down and 15.
00:29:56Just under three left.
00:29:57Third quarter.
00:30:03Allen found the opening.
00:30:07Marion making the stop.
00:30:09Allen not able to pick up the first down.
00:30:13And the punting unit will come on for the Raiders.
00:30:17All the scoring in the first half.
00:30:20Nothing at all in this third quarter.
00:30:22The Lippitt interception leading to a Franklin 47-yard field goal.
00:30:26Lester Hayes with an interception and a 26-yard return.
00:30:29Raiders led 7-3.
00:30:31It was Eason to Fryer on a 40-yarder.
00:30:33And New England took a 10-7 lead.
00:30:36Wilson to Doakie Williams, 38-yard return.
00:30:39Raiders with a 14-10 lead after one.
00:30:42Early second.
00:30:43Franklin hit from 20.
00:30:45And then a snap nut handled by the punter guy.
00:30:48Tippett picked it up and ratted in.
00:30:50And that's where we stand.
00:30:51Fair catch called for by Irving Fryer at the 11.
00:30:55A 42-yard punt.
00:30:59And the Patriots will go to the offense from their 11.
00:31:05Chicago, the Panthers.
00:31:07From their 11, Chicago.
00:31:10Handily over the Washington Redskins in the third quarter
00:31:14after the Skins got off to the early lead.
00:31:16Kansas City doing it to Seattle.
00:31:20Dallas and Houston tied at 10.
00:31:23Giants now lead the Eagles.
00:31:25Phil Sims to tie it in.
00:31:27Mark Bavaro to put the Giants on top.
00:31:29St. Louis over Green Bay, 26-7 in the third.
00:31:33Detroit now leads Tampa Bay in the fourth.
00:31:36Marius kicked his third field goal.
00:31:38Minnesota leads Buffalo.
00:31:42Getting behind the Patriots with two minutes left in this third quarter.
00:31:48Great change.
00:31:50Look out.
00:31:52Loose ball.
00:31:53And the Raiders have scored.
00:31:58Look to be Lyle Alzado.
00:32:09It has been a game of critical turnovers.
00:32:13Lyle Alzado able to cover it up for the six.
00:32:17Neither offense doing anything.
00:32:19The defense and the special teams, they won't take over.
00:32:22Alzado, you knew he was going to fall on that ball.
00:32:25There was no way he was going to take it.
00:32:27The only thing Lyle could do is fall and wrap his big body around it for the touchdown.
00:32:32Big play by the Raider defense.
00:32:34They lose their quarterback.
00:32:36The Raider defense comes back again to rescue the offense.
00:32:4136-year-old Lyle Alzado has tied the game.
00:32:47Here's Barr.
00:32:49And the Raiders now lead by one.
00:32:5221-20.
00:32:55Let's check out that play again.
00:32:57The ball carrier, number 32, Craig James.
00:33:01Just a straight handoff.
00:33:03He gets the handoff all right.
00:33:05Right there, looks like, was it Rod Martin?
00:33:08Van Pelt, 91, jerks it loose.
00:33:11Good play by Van Pelt.
00:33:16Rod Martin gets it.
00:33:18It is stripped of the ball.
00:33:20Tell you what, that's a brawl down there.
00:33:23Somebody picks it up, they're all gold.
00:33:25But it was a good play by Van Pelt because he knew that the tackle was going to be made in the line.
00:33:30And he got a great angle to rip the ball loose.
00:33:32And Alzado got into the end zone probably for what will be his last touchdown of his career.
00:33:38Wait a moment.
00:33:40He says he's retiring after this year.
00:33:42It's only game four.
00:33:44Lyle doesn't get around to football very often.
00:33:48So a 21-20 Raider lead.
00:33:56Lyle Alzado, his first touchdown as a member of the Los Angeles Raiders.
00:34:01He did account for two points coming up with a safety for the Raiders.
00:34:06He's down there now saying, oh, shucks, it was nothing.
00:34:09I don't see why the offense can't score.
00:34:11The end zone is close by.
00:34:13And Rod Martin had a shot at it, as you saw, but he was stripped.
00:34:17Here is Barr starring the deep man.
00:34:22And starring case for the 10, 20.
00:34:29And Fulton Walker leading the coverage downfield.
00:34:34So it's been a full day for Fulton and his Raider debut.
00:34:37I'm sure that he didn't expect to play this much coming in.
00:34:40Just being picked up this week, but with the injury to Montgomery,
00:34:43he's getting a full dose of special teams work.
00:34:51The only points for the Patriots this season in the third quarter
00:34:55came on an Irving Friar 85-yard punt return against Buffalo last Sunday.
00:35:01A minute and a half remaining, third quarter.
00:35:03Patriots first down from the 22.
00:35:08And Eason is hauled out by Howie Long.
00:35:12That's the first sack of the day for the Raiders for Long,
00:35:16his third of the season.
00:35:18We said at the top that the key to the New England Patriots
00:35:24was the offensive line controlling the Raiders and Howie Long and Al Zato.
00:35:29He did a pretty good job up to this point,
00:35:31but I think the momentum has switched now where the Raiders
00:35:34Howie Long, who grew up in Charleston, Massachusetts,
00:35:37played high school football in Milford, Mass.
00:35:40Patriots took a long look at him a senior year in college
00:35:43and decided not to draft him.
00:35:46Second down, 16.
00:35:53Almost intercepted by Lester Hayes.
00:35:56The pass intended for Stanley Morgan.
00:35:59And Hayes is hurt.
00:36:02They've landed on his hand.
00:36:08Hayes intercepting one earlier and running it in for a touchdown.
00:36:13You know, the Raider defense has really been the backbone of this team
00:36:16down through the years.
00:36:17They've had trouble offensively as their quarterbacks would get injured
00:36:20and come back to the plate.
00:36:22They've had trouble offensively as their quarterbacks would get injured
00:36:25and come back to the plate.
00:36:27As their quarterbacks would get injured and come back
00:36:29and Plunkett would get hurt and Wilson would come in and vice versa.
00:36:32But the defense has really been the backbone,
00:36:34which always has stuck together and held this team in there.
00:36:38The offense is sputtering today.
00:36:39The defense puts them ahead.
00:36:42Third and 16.
00:36:44Eason out of the shotgun with protection.
00:36:48Collins.
00:36:51Beautiful move by Collins.
00:36:53Doing it on Sam Seal.
00:36:58And picks up the first down.
00:37:00An 18-yard play.
00:37:03The Patriots have the big guns if they can just get them the football.
00:37:06Collins and James starring Fryer.
00:37:09Morgan, they've got all kinds of talent.
00:37:11Man-to-man coverage going across.
00:37:13He comes back.
00:37:14Martin left his man for a second.
00:37:16Misses the tackle.
00:37:17And now he's going to get upfield and make the first down.
00:37:21Good play by Collins.
00:37:22First down at the 34-yard line.
00:37:2856 seconds remaining.
00:37:30Third quarter.
00:37:36And Eason unleashing.
00:37:39And again almost intercepted.
00:37:41It's Wolden.
00:37:42Completed 10th for Craig James.
00:37:44It was Van McElroy
00:37:48who nearly picked one off.
00:37:50Boeing is for Eason.
00:37:52He had more time.
00:37:53It looks like McElroy is injured.
00:37:58Picked something on the lower leg.
00:38:02Fans booing Eason.
00:38:03Eason had time to throw.
00:38:04But the rush got him a little bit nervous, a little bit excited.
00:38:07And he rushed it.
00:38:08When he got out of the pocket, he had the time.
00:38:12Underthrew the ball.
00:38:13He had a receiver in the area.
00:38:17Now watch as the Raiders make him move around a little bit.
00:38:19Howie Long, 75.
00:38:21Piquel, 71.
00:38:22He has to step up.
00:38:23Now he has the time.
00:38:24But you don't know what's behind you.
00:38:26So he throws it without setting his feet and didn't get the ball there.
00:38:32McElroy dives for it.
00:38:33Doesn't quite get there.
00:38:37Van McElroy in his fourth year out of Baylor.
00:38:42Artificial turf, Marv, is not the ideal playing conditions for the L.A. Raiders.
00:38:51Last six years, their winning percentage has been 67% overall of all games.
00:38:57On artificial turf, only 54% in the last six years.
00:39:01They've won 13 and lost 11 on the artificial grass.
00:39:09Easton is now 9 for 22.
00:39:12159 yards, one touchdown, one interception.
00:39:17Patriots not able to do it on the ground.
00:39:19Averaging about 2.5 per carry.
00:39:21So their offense sputtering again.
00:39:23Collins is stopped.
00:39:26It'll be a third down play coming up.
00:39:28Rod Martin, Howie Long, all over Tony Collins.
00:39:32Howie Long beating Brock.
00:39:34Pete Brock was blocking back.
00:39:36The quickness of Howie Long got him around the center and into the backfield to disrupt the timing
00:39:41and allow the tackle to be made.
00:39:43Is Long the most complete defensive end in the NFL?
00:39:47I think he plays the run and the pass better than any lineman in the league.
00:39:51You may get some that play the pass a little better or the run,
00:39:53but as far as complete player, he's at the top.
00:39:57Time running down.
00:39:58Ten seconds left, third quarter.
00:40:00Third down and ten.
00:40:01And again, Easton from the shotgun.
00:40:03Pass deflected.
00:40:05And incomplete.
00:40:07And Easton hearing it.
00:40:09Stanley Morgan, the intended receiver.
00:40:12Easton had that one good spurt,
00:40:15but he has had his problems once again this week.
00:40:18Well, he did it on early downs, first and second downs,
00:40:20before the Raiders got their pass rushers in there and their nickelbacks.
00:40:25They're playing tight man-to-man coverage in the secondary,
00:40:27and when you get a lot of pressure to try to throw that ball from the center of the field
00:40:31to an out with a defensive man right on you,
00:40:34it's very, very difficult to complete it.
00:40:37Rich Camarillo has had an excellent day.
00:40:41Once again, Fulton Walker awaits the punt.
00:40:46And Camarillo booming it.
00:40:48Here's Walker to the 30.
00:40:53Good coverage by the Patriots led by Johnny Rembert.
00:40:57A 46-yard punt, 11-yard return.
00:41:00That's the end of the third quarter.
00:41:02The score, Raiders 21, Patriots 20.
00:41:05We'll be back after these words from your local station.
00:41:13Hi, Bob, is this the Raiders version of the Greasy Telestrator?
00:41:16Perhaps there's works.
00:41:18As I hear it going this way, tackle comes around this way,
00:41:21both guys blitzing, we'll get him for sure.
00:41:23Let's try it.
00:41:28And we're heading to the fourth quarter.
00:41:30Myer Valbert, Bob Greasy from Foxborough.
00:41:34As you check out the stats through three.
00:41:37Total yardage is about the same.
00:41:38Passing yards, it's a very close game.
00:41:40The turnovers in defense have been the story.
00:41:44Raiders by one, 21-20, first down.
00:41:47That's Doakie Williams in motion.
00:41:50Here's Allen.
00:41:55Stopped at the line, the strong safety,
00:41:58Roland James combining with Andre Tippett.
00:42:02Good defensive play by Andre Tippett
00:42:05as he strings out Todd Christensen.
00:42:07Christensen, an excellent receiver,
00:42:09but you see he cannot get him hooked.
00:42:11He can't get him hooked.
00:42:13Plays him down the line, does Tippett,
00:42:15and then the defensive flow comes and stops him for no game.
00:42:20With the glasses on, looks so mild-mannered.
00:42:24Andre Tippett in his fourth season out of Iowa.
00:42:27Marcus Allen with 72 yards on the ground
00:42:30has outrushed the Patriot team to this point.
00:42:34Those are stumbling.
00:42:38That was a dangerous pass intended for Allen.
00:42:46You're right, Marvin, it was a very dangerous pass.
00:42:48It started out as a simple pass.
00:42:50The receivers are going to come down and break to the inside.
00:42:53Now, Allen is back here.
00:42:54He's going to come out of the backfield
00:42:56and break to the outside.
00:42:57The problem is, Hilger waits too long to throw the football
00:43:00and allows the defensive back to cut him.
00:43:02He should have been thrown right now.
00:43:04He's open, but he waits too long,
00:43:06and now you're talking trouble.
00:43:09Third down and 10.
00:43:10Rader is not doing it.
00:43:12In third down situations, 2 for 11.
00:43:15Rusty Hilger, 0 for 3, and this is NFL debut.
00:43:19Taking over for Mark Wilson, who injured an ankle.
00:43:26Hilger throwing deep.
00:43:32Dokey Williams, the intended receiver,
00:43:34in a race with Rod McSwain,
00:43:38and the punting unit headed on now for the Raiders.
00:43:41That's a safe play as we take a look at these scores.
00:43:43Hilger, that play was sent in from the sideline.
00:43:46It's a safe play because you're throwing it deep down the field.
00:43:49You cannot throw in the coverage.
00:43:50It's one-on-one, and you maybe get a big play out of it.
00:43:53Hilger having some problems coming on,
00:43:56but I think they're in good situation.
00:43:57I think they feel like if we don't turn it over offensively,
00:44:00we'll let our defense and this man right here
00:44:03play the rest of the football game.
00:44:05And Ray Guy has had an outstanding day.
00:44:07In fact, both punters have done well.
00:44:11One more.
00:44:16Irving Fryer at a 17.
00:44:21The Raiders have done a good job in handcuffing Fryer.
00:44:26Timeout, opening minute.
00:44:28Fourth quarter, and it's the Raiders by one.
00:44:34Sullivan Stadium, Foxborough.
00:44:36Today's game has been a set-out for three weeks.
00:44:39I'm told the November 3rd game against Miami is already SRO.
00:44:43Patriots taking over, and a burst by Collins.
00:44:48Out near the 30-yard line.
00:44:50Thirty seconds gone by.
00:44:52Fourth quarter, and the Raiders lead the Patriots 21-20.
00:44:57Lyle Alzado covering up a fumble in the end zone,
00:45:01followed by the extra point kicked by Chris Barr,
00:45:04providing the one-point lead for the Los Angeles Raiders.
00:45:08Collins picked up three.
00:45:11Second down and seven.
00:45:20And here's James.
00:45:23Stopped short of the first down, Howie Long.
00:45:27And Brad Van Pelt combining.
00:45:34Probably a third down and two.
00:45:39Correction, Collins had picked up eight on that first play from scrimmage on this series,
00:45:45so it is a third down and two from the 30.
00:46:01In trouble.
00:46:06Mike Davis heading to the quarterback, Tommy Eason.
00:46:13The Raiders were in a blitz.
00:46:15Mike Davis on a safety blitz.
00:46:20And we'll see it again.
00:46:21Davis coming inside.
00:46:25Grogan moving around.
00:46:26I mean, Eason moving around on the play, not able to avoid the right.
00:46:30I think it's a first sack that the second sack of Eason today,
00:46:34pretty good protection most of the day by the Pets.
00:46:38And here's Camarillo back at his 11.
00:46:46Fulton Walker takes to the 30.
00:46:5040.
00:46:54Running very well.
00:46:55He overkicked his coverage by about 25 yards.
00:47:0026-yard return.
00:47:05Takeover midfield.
00:47:07Marcus Allen off the left side.
00:47:11Stopped by the inside linebacker, Larry McGrew.
00:47:14Coming up next on NBC Sports, the second half of the doubleheader.
00:47:19And most of you will see Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins battle John Elway
00:47:23and the Denver Broncos.
00:47:26Check your local listings for the game coming up in your area.
00:47:32Second and five.
00:47:33Twelve minutes remaining.
00:47:35Fourth quarter.
00:47:36Raiders lead the Patriots 21-20.
00:47:40And Allen again.
00:47:42Steve Nelson on the tackle.
00:47:50This game got off very quickly in terms of scoring in the first half.
00:47:54Not much happening here in the second half.
00:47:57And look at the last six possessions for the Raiders.
00:48:00They're all punts.
00:48:01And they haven't had the ball very many plays in those drives.
00:48:05Six and the most being six.
00:48:07The last possession was four.
00:48:09But the complexion of their offense has changed a little bit with Hilger being
00:48:13in the ballgame.
00:48:14It's been more conservative, more running.
00:48:16And some of the long passes down the field, which are safe passes,
00:48:20may be a big play.
00:48:21But if not, certainly not an interception.
00:48:24Marcus Allen grinding it out.
00:48:25Picked up the first down.
00:48:2717 carries, 82 yards for Allen.
00:48:31First down at the New England 41.
00:48:37Here's Hawkins.
00:48:40Hawkins to the 38.
00:48:42Picked up three.
00:48:43Ken Sims on the stop.
00:48:45Recapping.
00:48:46In the first quarter,
00:48:47the interception by Lippitt led to the field goal by Franklin.
00:48:51Then Hayes from 27 yards away on an interception,
00:48:54giving the Raiders the lead.
00:48:56Friar hooking up with Eason.
00:48:58Patriots by three.
00:49:00Still first quarter action.
00:49:02It was Dokie Williams on a 38-yard touchdown for Mark Wilson.
00:49:05Then Tippett on the 25-yard fumble recovery,
00:49:08followed by Alzaedo covering one up.
00:49:11And the Raiders lead at 21-20.
00:49:13We're early fourth quarter.
00:49:16Picks up there.
00:49:17Allen not able to save it.
00:49:19Hawkins and Hilger on a collision.
00:49:22That's the problem when you're a rookie quarterback in the offense.
00:49:27The plays are being sent in from the sideline.
00:49:29He either calls them incorrectly or he goes the wrong way.
00:49:32And Hilger is having a tough time.
00:49:34But, again, it's a tough situation to come in and play a good defense like the Patriots.
00:49:39It's a third down and nine.
00:49:41And a new look on the offensive line of the Raiders.
00:49:45Dave Dalby playing the last couple of series.
00:49:48Mosbar, who started at center, now replacing Marvin at right guard.
00:49:52Jordan and Lawrence at the tackles.
00:49:54Davis and Mosbar at the guard.
00:49:58And Hilger nearly put one right in the stomach of Marion,
00:50:05who should have had it.
00:50:07Fred Marion, the free safety, not able to hang on.
00:50:10Hilger now 0 for 5.
00:50:16Take a look at what Hilger is going to do.
00:50:18He's trying to get to the ball at tight end.
00:50:19The tight end is going to come down the inside.
00:50:21Allen's going to clear out for him.
00:50:23And then he's going to come back.
00:50:24That is Christensen.
00:50:28Marion will come from the inside.
00:50:30Watch the tight end.
00:50:31Now watch Marion come right up inside of him.
00:50:33Almost picked the football off.
00:50:37And here is Ray Guy.
00:50:40Now from his 45-yard line.
00:50:45Angling to the right.
00:50:52And let's see where they spot it.
00:50:54At about the 7, so Guy has done it again.
00:50:58Right on target.
00:51:0033-yard putt, but the Patriots, again, will start out from deep in their own end.
00:51:07Check the reaction here of Ray Guy as he watches the flight of his putt.
00:51:15Yes, marked out at the 7-yard line.
00:51:18So he has hit 6 of 10 inside the 20.
00:51:21The ball spotted at the 7.
00:51:23Collins.
00:51:28Stopped by Piquel.
00:51:30Paul Fairchild is back in at left guard, replacing John Hannah.
00:51:37And there is John Incognito.
00:51:39Look at his big thighs, his legs, how big.
00:51:42That's why he got the name Hog Hannah.
00:51:44It's been a little hot for him today.
00:51:46He hasn't been in training.
00:51:48Had a leg problem earlier on in training camp.
00:51:50And they're working him back into the offense.
00:51:53Second out at 7.
00:51:54The ball at the New England 10.
00:52:02Collins with Howie Long right there.
00:52:07Howie Long.
00:52:13Howie Long, from the left side of your screen, slants to the inside.
00:52:17Moore, the offensive tackle, thought he was going straight.
00:52:20Howie Long says, I'm going inside, does a little ole, left arm over, into the backfield.
00:52:27Long was almost there in time to take the handoff.
00:52:31What makes him so good, Marv, is his strength and his quickness.
00:52:34You don't normally see that combination in defensive linemen.
00:52:37Third down, 9.
00:52:39Eason off the roll.
00:52:42Under throws.
00:52:46And that pass intended for Derek Ramsey.
00:52:52A crowd not pleased with that New England series.
00:52:55And here comes Camarillo.
00:52:57It has been a pun-a-thon for the Patriots, similar to the situation with the Raiders.
00:53:03We showed you the Raiders earlier, the last six times they had the ball were punts.
00:53:06These six were all punts, except for the one fumble caused the touchdown,
00:53:11which is the difference in this ballgame.
00:53:15So Camarillo will punt for his ninth time.
00:53:19Fulton Walker has had a good day.
00:53:22Handling special team duty in his debut with the Raiders.
00:53:26Short punt.
00:53:28Walker to the 40.
00:53:34And a big break.
00:53:37For Camarillo, the first bad punt of the day.
00:53:40A 37-yarder, 20-yard return by Walker, and he was tackled by the punter, Camarillo.
00:53:46This game has turned into a duel of punters.
00:53:49And Ray Guy is winning it at this point because this was a very poor kick.
00:53:53Camarillo over to make the tackle.
00:53:56It's how he was hurt, but if he didn't make the tackle, it was six points for Fulton Walker.
00:54:01As we mentioned earlier, Camarillo injured against the Redskins in a preseason game
00:54:07last year trying to tackle Mike Nelms.
00:54:10Now Hilger and the Raiders, first down at the Patriot 23.
00:54:14Allen wanted to go outside, broke the tackle.
00:54:20And out of bounds at the 17, Claiborne pushed him out.
00:54:25I'm sure Tom Flores will feel very fortunate
00:54:29if he can come to Foxboro where he hasn't won.
00:54:32He's 0-2 in Foxboro.
00:54:34Have both of his starting quarterbacks, first Plunkett and then Wilson,
00:54:37out of the ballgame and send in a rookie, Hilger,
00:54:40and win this football game late in the ballgame.
00:54:42He's doing it with a conservative offense that is running the football
00:54:46and a very active defense and his special teams.
00:54:49Wilson entering his ankle in the third quarter.
00:54:52Second down and four.
00:54:55They light up in the eye.
00:55:00Allen.
00:55:02Change of direction. Hilger leading him.
00:55:09A magnificent move by Marcus Allen and has the first down.
00:55:14I'm sure that Ray Guy on the sideline is praying that Hilger doesn't get hurt
00:55:20because last year, as we take another look at this play,
00:55:23nothing inside the great back that he is.
00:55:26He spins out and says, if they're all over to the left,
00:55:28I'm going back to the right.
00:55:30Hilger out in front trying to make a block,
00:55:32but last year and the year before, both quarterbacks were nicked a little bit
00:55:36and Flores was standing there talking to Ray Guy
00:55:39and the more he talked to him about going in,
00:55:41the more his eyes got bigger and bigger.
00:55:43And then Wilson came from the tunnel and Guy said,
00:55:47here he comes, he's coming out, let him go in.
00:55:49First and goal from the nine.
00:55:53Frank Hawkins, the ball carrier.
00:55:57Marcus Allen from time to time has complained
00:55:59that he does not handle the ball enough.
00:56:01I don't think there are any complaints today.
00:56:03It's been all Marcus Allen.
00:56:0520 carries, 93 yards.
00:56:07Giants and Eagles now tied at 10.
00:56:09In the fourth quarter, St. Louis continues to pile it up,
00:56:12leading Green Bay 33-14.
00:56:15Minnesota and Buffalo now tied at 20.
00:56:19Second and goal from the six.
00:56:26Here's Allen.
00:56:31Fred Marion and Larry McGrew on the stop.
00:56:36National Football League rules require that we present away games
00:56:41starting with the opening kickoff to stations in the team's home area.
00:56:46Viewers in Denver, New York, and San Diego will be leaving this game
00:56:50in just a couple of minutes for a telecast involving your home team.
00:56:53However, we will continue to bring you reports on this game
00:56:57to keep you up to date.
00:57:02A third and goal from the two as the Raiders call for time.
00:57:077.25 left in this fourth quarter.
00:57:11Raiders lead it 21-20.
00:57:14And off that short punt by Camarillo and the good return by Walker,
00:57:19the Raiders are on the doorstep.
00:57:22Coming up next on NBC Sports, the second half of the doubleheader.
00:57:27You will see either Miami playing the Denver Broncos in Denver,
00:57:31Jets in Indianapolis, or the Cleveland Browns and the San Diego Chargers.
00:57:36That will be the second half of the doubleheader right here on NBC Sports.
00:57:42Raiders taking that time out to talk it over.
00:57:47Whether they want to go with a running play or a pass play.
00:57:50Third down and about two, I guess it is, for a first down.
00:57:55Actually, a running play or a pass play, I don't think that you can really set for one or the other
00:58:02because I think if a running play, two yards, you might make it for a touchdown
00:58:06if you're playing with an expecting pass.
00:58:08I think the Raiders discussing whether they want to run a draw maybe, run Marcus Allen,
00:58:14or whether they want to go on a pass.
00:58:16I kind of think that what they're going to do is give the ball and a handoff.
00:58:19I think they're happy with the way their defense is playing,
00:58:22and I don't think they want to put the pressure on Hilger to throw the ball
00:58:25and perhaps get an interception.
00:58:27And he is 0 for 5, so that would be the...
00:58:32It's a pretty tough way to break into the league.
00:58:36There he is, Rusty Hilger out of Oklahoma State.
00:58:41A sixth-round draft.
00:58:46Third and goal from the two.
00:58:49Raiders have not done it in third-down situations.
00:58:52And here is Hilger directing traffic.
00:58:56And let's see. Touchdown, Todd Christensen.
00:59:02Catch it. Back of the end zone.
00:59:04And the Raiders do gamble and succeed with the big play.
00:59:08Hilger's first NFL completion, and it's 4-a-score.
00:59:13Well, they got him outside the pocket, Marv,
00:59:15where he wouldn't have to take the heat of the rush,
00:59:17and also where he could get outside and see a little bit.
00:59:20No reading to do on that one.
00:59:22He got outside and barely got the ball in there.
00:59:24Kind of short-armed it, but still a touchdown.
00:59:28Now, the conservative call is not to do it like that,
00:59:31as you were indicating, Bob.
00:59:33But that's a typical Raider play.
00:59:37And Barr with the extra point.
00:59:41So the Raiders now lead it 28-20.
00:59:46Good fake up the middle, holds the linebacker, McGrew.
00:59:49Then he rolls out, throws the ball into the end zone,
00:59:54barely see if he makes the catch.
00:59:56Got his hands. It looks like he did.
00:59:57We couldn't see the actual catch,
00:59:59but it looks like he had his hands underneath it.
01:00:02Todd Christensen taking bows from all of his teammates on the sideline.
01:00:06His second touchdown of the season.
01:00:08Five receptions, 41 yards.
01:00:11Todd Christensen giving the Raiders an 8-point lead
01:00:15with 718 left in this fourth quarter.
01:00:18And, you know, prior to this touchdown,
01:00:20the last offensive score was back early in the second quarter
01:00:25on a 20-yard field goal by Tony Franklin.
01:00:28Coming into the ballgame, both offenses had been struggling,
01:00:34and the defenses had been playing well.
01:00:36I'm sure he's breathing a lot easier
01:00:40knowing that the team is in good shape offensively
01:00:44as far as points on the board.
01:00:45Now the defense, which has been their strength,
01:00:47can go out and play at the ballgame.
01:00:49Do you believe that?
01:00:50Sure.
01:00:51From a team point of view.
01:00:52But perhaps he's worried about his job.
01:00:54No, I don't think he's worried about his job.
01:00:56Not at all.
01:00:57Hilger hasn't completed that many passes.
01:00:59It's been very conservative.
01:01:01I think that this will certainly go a long way
01:01:04in Hilger's career development.
01:01:06I don't think he's got any concern
01:01:08about who's starting next week if he's healthy.
01:01:12This is starting.
01:01:15Wallop back at the 10.
01:01:19Excellent coverage led by the former Boston College standout
01:01:25Steve Strahan.
01:01:27Mets leading the Pirates 6-4 in the ninth inning
01:01:31while the Cardinals and the Expos are now tied at 5
01:01:35in the ninth while the Yankees over the Orioles 4-0.
01:01:43And this is the story coming into today.
01:01:45And this is the story coming into today.
01:01:47So the Yanks are now five and a half back.
01:01:49And in the West, California and Kansas City
01:01:52coming even, both losing the last couple of days.
01:01:58Mason off the roll.
01:02:00Almost picked off on a flag throw.
01:02:04That went through the hands of Stacey Turan.
01:02:07Stacey Turan.
01:02:13Holding New England.
01:02:27Holden, number 61, no offense.
01:02:30Totally declined. Second down.
01:02:33A hold called on the right guard, Ronald Wooten.
01:02:38You know, the Patriots have accounted for only 16 yards
01:02:43their last 17 offensive plays.
01:02:46That's the man that has to do something right there.
01:02:49The catalyst, the man that gets it going.
01:02:51You can have good weapons around you, but he's the catalyst.
01:02:54He's got to do something to create some activity.
01:02:57Out of the shotgun.
01:02:59And Morgan able to break it.
01:03:01Our pickup, McIlroy making the stop.
01:03:05And an important play as the Patriots
01:03:08with a first down moving it upfield.
01:03:11Take a look as the defensive line
01:03:13crosses how he long runs past him.
01:03:15Now, this is what you have.
01:03:16Tight man-to-man coverage everywhere.
01:03:18If you break the tackle of the guy that's covering you,
01:03:20there's no one else around.
01:03:22This game is going to be tough.
01:03:24If you break the tackle of the guy that's covering you,
01:03:26there's no one else around.
01:03:28This game has become a series of small, fast, wide receivers
01:03:33and quick defensive backs.
01:03:35That's where the passing game is right now.
01:03:37Patriots first down from their 36-15 to go.
01:03:42Fourth quarter.
01:03:44And Eason throws.
01:03:46And again, Teran should have had the interception.
01:03:51Intended for Friar.
01:03:53He forced that ball, Marv.
01:03:54He should have never thrown it.
01:03:56There was nothing else available.
01:03:58He was getting some heat in the pocket,
01:04:00so he went ahead and threw it anyway.
01:04:02Now, you can't do that.
01:04:03You either have to take off running or throw it away.
01:04:06Crowd is chanting for Steve Grogan.
01:04:12Grogan, as we mentioned earlier, has not played in 16 games
01:04:16since the third game of last year against Seattle
01:04:19when Eason replaced him
01:04:21and then sparked a come-from-behind victory.
01:04:26Second and 10 from the 30.
01:04:31Eason with time.
01:04:37Greg James to the 35-yard line.
01:04:42Rod Martin on the stop.
01:04:45We're told that John Hannah came into today's game
01:04:48suffering from the flu,
01:04:50so he has been shuffled in and out of the lineup
01:04:53with Paul Fairtrout coming on.
01:04:55Right now, it's Brock at center.
01:04:57Wooten, Fairtrout at the guards.
01:04:59Moore and Holloway at the tackles.
01:05:02Third down and four.
01:05:11And Ramsey not able to hang on, but a flag down.
01:05:16Holding on the offense.
01:05:23Five and a half left.
01:05:25In this fourth quarter, the Raiders now lead the Patriots 28 to 20.
01:05:33Holding, number 67 offense.
01:05:36Personal foul on this very roughness.
01:05:39Number 37 defense.
01:05:41Penalties offset. Repeat the down.
01:05:43Lester Hayes called for the personal foul
01:05:46and the right tackle Steve Moore on the hold.
01:05:50Lester Hayes at the top.
01:05:52Gets a jam, number 37.
01:05:57The flag had already been thrown.
01:05:59It was for that initial jab up around the head.
01:06:05It's a third down and four.
01:06:13And this time it is picked up.
01:06:16Sam Seal.
01:06:2137-yard touchdown off the interception.
01:06:26Sam Seal, the extra defensive back out of Western State in Colorado.
01:06:33And there's a penalty marker down.
01:06:39That may relate to the celebration of the end zone.
01:06:48That was a poor throw.
01:06:54So the touchdown will stand and Raiders will be penalized for the celebration.
01:07:01But a poor throw by Eason, but it was a poor route.
01:07:03I'll demonstrate it to you after the kick.
01:07:08So Lester Hayes has run one in, as has Sam Seal.
01:07:12And the Raiders now lead it 34 to 20.
01:07:15And here is Chris Bond.
01:07:17Wilson putting it down.
01:07:26Just aggressive defense.
01:07:28Take a look right here. Here's Sam Seal.
01:07:30Now the receiver right here is going to come out and break to the outside.
01:07:33This receiver is going to break to the inside.
01:07:35But they collide.
01:07:36Both of them running to each other.
01:07:38And Seal is the only one that has vision on the ball.
01:07:40Watch him.
01:07:41They cross.
01:07:42Poor pattern right there.
01:07:43They're all mixed up.
01:07:46Eason tries to throw the ball the best he can.
01:07:48Seal sees it all the way, steps in.
01:07:50But there was poor timing in the route, the run of the pattern.
01:07:54When you have an offense like that, it's not all on the quarterback.
01:07:57He threw a bad pass and shouldn't have thrown it.
01:07:59The routes weren't crisp, and they didn't run it the way they were supposed to.
01:08:03Second interception thrown by Eason.
01:08:06Both run back for touchdowns.
01:08:08That makes seven on the season.
01:08:11He was intercepted only eight times all of last year.
01:08:14He's been ineffective now for three straight games.
01:08:17Do you go to the veteran, Steve Grogan, next week?
01:08:19Well, there's no doubt that Eason has been erratic.
01:08:22I mean, I think it all started against the Bears, we said earlier.
01:08:26Bears very aggressive, maybe have knocked him around a little bit.
01:08:29They do a lot of blitzing, a lot of different stunts, and he may have lost some confidence.
01:08:33But he's your quarterback of the future.
01:08:35There's no doubt that Eason played very well last year, and he will regain that form this year.
01:08:41But he's in a slump right now, and is he going to come out of it today?
01:08:44Obviously not.
01:08:45I would go and put in Grogan and see what he can do.
01:08:4811 for 28 for Eason, 184 yards.
01:08:52One touchdown in the two interceptions, 524 left in this fourth quarter.
01:08:58And the Raiders lead the Patriots by the score of 35 to 20.
01:09:04Chris Barnes, 10th season out of Penn State, with the kickoff.
01:09:10And it's Jones, one of the upmen, out across the 35-yard line.
01:09:16Cedric Jones with a 20-yard return.
01:09:20Stopped by Steve Scrahan, a product of Boston College.
01:09:25Right here, let's pause for station identification.
01:09:27This is the NBC Television Network.
01:09:30You're watching WXFL Channel 8, Tampa, St. Petersburg.
01:09:37Barb Albert, Bob Greasy from Sullivan Stadium in Foxborough.
01:09:41The Raiders with a 35-20 lead on the Patriots.
01:09:45Charlie Eason remaining at the helm as the Patriots go first down
01:09:51from their 36-yard line.
01:09:56Out of the shotgun.
01:10:01Friar across the 40.
01:10:05I really feel that Raymond Berry should go ahead and put Grogan in.
01:10:11Eason is scarred from this game.
01:10:14He is not playing that well.
01:10:16And the only thing that's going to happen is it's going to get worse
01:10:18before it gets better.
01:10:19Here's Collins.
01:10:22As the first down across midfield.
01:10:2511-yard pass player Rod Martin on the tackle.
01:10:28Patriots on the hurry-up offense.
01:10:30We're under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
01:10:38Now Eason going deeper, deflected, and incomplete.
01:10:43Hayes diving for it.
01:10:44Morgan the intended receiver.
01:10:47McIlroy hurt himself diving for that football.
01:10:50Both he and Hayes driving for it.
01:10:53Jammed a finger or something.
01:10:57It's Davis, 36.
01:11:01And the battle of Texas.
01:11:03Danny White has thrown his second touchdown,
01:11:06and he's put the Cowboys up with 17-10.
01:11:09Giants and Eagles now at overtime tied at 10.
01:11:14Tom Flores and his Los Angeles Raiders.
01:11:19With a 35-20 lead on the New England Patriots.
01:11:23Raiders looking to even up their record at 2-2.
01:11:30James.
01:11:34So the quick handoff to Craig James,
01:11:37and he rips off 22 yards.
01:11:46It's a draw play.
01:11:47The Raiders are not worried about draw plays and running plays.
01:11:50They're ahead by more than two touchdowns,
01:11:52so they're playing it loose in the secondary, deep zones.
01:11:55You're going to have some space to run in,
01:11:57but the overall picture is still favorable to play defense
01:12:00the way they're playing it.
01:12:0253 yards, 12 carries for James.
01:12:06First out at the 26 in Reddit territory.
01:12:10Flag throw, Eason going deep.
01:12:15To break it up.
01:12:19Derwin Williams getting the pop from Mike Davis.
01:12:28And let's see what this flag is all about.
01:12:31I believe it's offsides on the Raiders.
01:12:40Offside, number 99 defense.
01:12:42Five-yard penalty, first down five.
01:12:45That is Sean Jones called on the offside.
01:12:50There he is, number 99.
01:12:55And there's a final.
01:12:56Kansas City defeating Seattle 28-7.
01:13:03First and five.
01:13:08Eason chased by Piquel, throws a bouncer.
01:13:13And that will be intentional grounding.
01:13:22Let's see if Cedric Jones plays it on the short hop.
01:13:26Well, you know, they're calling more of this this year
01:13:28than I've ever seen before,
01:13:30and the definition of intentional grounding
01:13:33is if the ball is thrown away with the specific purpose
01:13:37to avert a loss, okay?
01:13:41Now, I think that was a pretty good call
01:13:43because he threw it straight into the ground.
01:13:45Even though there was a receiver in the area,
01:13:47he threw it.
01:13:51He threw it.
01:14:04Right.
01:14:08To all of them.
01:14:12Stopped in Cleveland.
01:14:16Threw the hurricane.
01:14:19Spent Friday night at the airport.
01:14:21Worked out at the stadium there and then came on,
01:14:23but just getting a quick view of what it's going to be like
01:14:27in Cleveland in a couple of weeks.
01:14:29And next Sunday, the Patriots will play the Browns in Cleveland,
01:14:32then back home for Buffalo.
01:14:34The Jets on to Tampa Bay and home for Miami.
01:14:40It's a big win for the Raiders, Marv.
01:14:43You know, we said they've lost their last two.
01:14:45They were on the road.
01:14:46They've never won up here in Foxboro.
01:14:48They've lost their quarterback last week.
01:14:51Wilson was starting for the first time.
01:14:53Wilson goes down in the middle of the game,
01:14:55and now they have a rookie in the lineup,
01:14:57and they still come back and win the football game convincingly
01:15:00by 15 points, and it's their defense.
01:15:03It always comes to the rescue of their offense,
01:15:05and if this is a game they really needed to win.
01:15:08Defense and a solid performance by Marcus.
01:15:14And Todd Christensen.
01:15:16And from Walker to the good job.
01:15:20And Eason throwing on the run.
01:15:26It's just getting worse for Tony Eason.
01:15:29Jeff Barnes able to pick it off.
01:15:34There are times when you have to admit that the game is over
01:15:37and admit a loss, take your man out of there,
01:15:39and let somebody else come in and take the tough ending.
01:15:43The Raiders are sitting back now just enjoying this,
01:15:46and this is a tough situation.
01:15:48I've been through some of these, and I'll tell you,
01:15:50when the coach took me out, I was glad of it.
01:15:52Let the other guy go in and get his brains beat out.
01:15:56Said with such compassion.
01:15:58I've been through it.
01:16:00Jeff Barnes, ninth year out of California,
01:16:02coming up with his first interception of the season,
01:16:05and Eason picked off for the third time today.
01:16:10328 left, fourth quarter.
01:16:13And the Raiders first down from their 17-yard line.
01:16:18Eric Jensen now in the backfield.
01:16:21Go, Eric!
01:16:22Go, Eric!
01:16:23Go, Eric!
01:16:24Go, Eric!
01:16:25Go, Eric!
01:16:26Go, Eric!
01:16:27Go, Eric!
01:16:28Go, Eric!
01:16:29Go, Eric!
01:16:30Go, Eric!
01:16:31Go, Eric!
01:16:32Go, Eric!
01:16:33They look to run it down.
01:16:35Hawkins and Jensen are the running backs,
01:16:39so Marcus Allen to the sideline.
01:16:43Coming into this ballgame, the Raiders were in last place
01:16:46in the AFC West.
01:16:52And the Patriots are by no means out of the race.
01:16:56They'll drop to 2-2 and certainly have a good ball club.
01:16:59Their offense isn't playing well now,
01:17:01but that'll get straightened out,
01:17:02and they'll be a force in the AFC East before the year is over.
01:17:05Second and seven out of the eye.
01:17:11This is Hawkins.
01:17:14Penalty marker throw.
01:17:15Hawkins across the 22-yard line.
01:17:19Ken Sims on the stop along with Andre Tippett.
01:17:25Go, go!
01:17:26Go, go!
01:17:27Go, go!
01:17:28Go, go!
01:17:29Go, go!
01:17:30Go, go!
01:17:31Go, go, go!
01:17:32And it is against New England.
01:17:37Ball goes down to 2.5 remaining now in the 4th quarter.
01:17:41There they go.
01:17:42Use of hands.
01:17:43Number 55 defense.
01:17:455-yard penalty.
01:17:46Automatic first down.
01:17:48John Blackman, the outside linebacker.
01:17:51hit with the penalty and the automatic first down the Marv last night I had a
01:17:57nice conversation with Tom Flores and we were talking about different things and
01:18:01he said you know quarterback is the toughest position to judge going into
01:18:06the draft drafting out of college and then also once you have them on your
01:18:09team you know we were talking about Mark Wilson and the problems that he's had
01:18:12and Plunkett and I think Hildrey you know he was talking about Hildre also
01:18:17and he said you can figure other positions a little easier but
01:18:20quarterback there's so many things involved you know you can see if he has
01:18:23a strong arm and if he's intelligent but does he does he have that
01:18:26competitiveness does he have the heart for it and I think you're seeing
01:18:30examples on both sides of the field here judging quarterbacks and there's the two
01:18:34minute warning we'll take this time out back after these words a deal we
01:18:38mentioned the name such as Richard Todd and Doug Williams perhaps there is some
01:18:43interest there I think the work that Hildre has had in this ballgame today
01:18:46will help him he got a lot of playing time in the preseason but having been in
01:18:50this ballgame today under real conditions will help him if he does play
01:18:55next week and start but I think that the Raiders if depending on the severity of
01:18:59Wilson's ankle injury I don't think you'll be able to play next week but
01:19:03depending on the severity of it may go outside and look for a quarterback
01:19:06Rusty Hildre did come up with the big play tossing the short touchdown of Todd
01:19:12Christensen for his first NFL completion he is one for six overall
01:19:20second down and six at the 33 Raiders just running out the clock two minutes
01:19:26remaining in this fourth quarter as Hawkins picking his way good second
01:19:33effort and he has stopped well picked up the first down they mark it first down
01:19:40for the Raiders Frank Hawkins in his fifth season out of Novato Reno and he
01:19:47has won the starting job pushing Kenny King to a backup role King was the
01:19:52starting fullback now King backing up Marcus Allen
01:19:58down to a minute and a half left the Raiders will even up the record at two
01:20:05and two the Patriots will fall to a record of two and two this time it is
01:20:11Jensen Derrick Jensen a special teams spark plug and his seventh year out of
01:20:17Texas Arlington Dallas just getting by Houston Houston's playing a lot better
01:20:24and the Giants over the Eagles in overtime so the Giants now three and one
01:20:33and a soda over Buffalo 27 20 so a string of close games we're down to 45
01:20:43seconds remaining here second down and seven
01:20:52here's Jensen stop behind the line Blackman there for the tackle and
01:21:03checking out the AFC West Kansas City with the win today over Seattle Denver
01:21:10playing later on against Miami San Diego later on Seattle with the defeat now two
01:21:15and two and the Raiders going on to the victory here for the record of two and
01:21:19two time has run out on the New England Patriots so the Raiders with a bounce
01:21:24back victory following the clobbering at the hands of the 49ers last week have
01:21:30turned it to defeat the Patriots by the score of 35 to 20 we'll be back in just
01:21:37a moment
