00:00:00Well, a very pleasant good afternoon to you everybody. I'm Phil Stone, along with a man who has certainly felt the heat of these playoff fires.
00:00:06The former head coach of the Cleveland Brass, Sam Vitigliano. Sam, New England, a team with exceptional balance.
00:00:11They have sent seven men to the Pro Bowl this year, more than any other team in the AFC.
00:00:15Well, they're a team certainly operating on all cylinders.
00:00:18Craig James made it, running behind Brian Holloway and John Hannah in his ninth appearance in a Pro Bowl.
00:00:24And Irving Frye can beat you in many ways.
00:00:27Defensively, Steve Nelson said it best. They are a strong, aggressive, attacking defense.
00:00:32Andre Tippett, 16 and a half sacks, and there are two other players on defense that could have made it to the Pro Bowl, Phil.
00:00:39I'll tell you, there are some folks around these parts that are madder than hornets that Freddie Marion and Don Blackman are not going to the Pro Bowl.
00:00:45You talk about the Cincinnati Bengals, here is a team, Boomer Esiason. He loves to go deep.
00:00:49Sam, will he be effective employing that vertical game today against the Patriots?
00:00:53Boomer has Chris Collingsworth and Eddie Brown, and I'm going to make a statement, Phil.
00:00:58I think they're the best duo in the National Football League.
00:01:02The Bengals lost any shot, Sam, they had at the postseason tournament when the Steelers lost yesterday to the New York Giants.
00:01:09But does Cincinnati have enough left, knowing they're not going to the playoffs, to knock off the Patriots?
00:01:14Their head coach right now and the organization wants to have as good an offseason as they possibly can.
00:01:21And their comfort zone right now is to even out into an 8-8 season and have as good an offseason as they possibly can.
00:01:28And they can do that by beating the Pats today.
00:01:31You're absolutely right, Sam, and there's the man who will try and engineer that victory over New England, Sam Wychin.
00:01:37His second year as head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, he told me about 20 minutes ago,
00:01:41he is absolutely heartsick that his Bengals will not be a part of the Super Bowl tournament.
00:01:47As for the New England Patriots, oh, what a year it has been for Raymond Berry.
00:01:51First full year as a head coach in the National Football League,
00:01:55and he has got his team on the windowsill of the 1985-86 playoff picture.
00:02:07A near-capacity crowd on hand here at Sullivan Stadium, the temperature 29 degrees,
00:02:12a 15-mile-an-hour wind, the wind chill is 12 degrees, and Jim Breach will let it sail.
00:02:20And over end, it has taken O.Yard deep, and here comes Stephan Starr, and he'll bring it out.
00:02:26He moves it to the 20-yard line, he is knocked off his feet by Robert Jackson,
00:02:30a 21-yard return, and here come the Patriots, led by Tony Eason.
00:02:36Collins, James, the running backs, James on his way to the Pro Bowl, so is Irving Fryer,
00:02:41Stanley Morgan, Lynn Dawson, the wide receivers in the tight end.
00:02:44The offensive line, a couple of all-pros in Holloway and Hannah,
00:02:48Pete Brock, his first start since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on both knees back in early October.
00:03:06Eason, and on the first play of the game, he is swarmed under by Eddie Edwards.
00:03:13For the Bengals only, their 38th sack all year.
00:03:16They are not known for getting to opposing quarterbacks,
00:03:19and one of the big reasons is those three right there.
00:03:22Quite frankly, they have not pressured opposing quarterbacks enough.
00:03:27Tim Crumrye, an outstanding year at nose tackle.
00:03:30The linebacker is Carl Zander, the lone rookie.
00:03:33Glenn Cameron in his 11th year out of Florida.
00:03:36And the defensive backs, oh, Louie Breeden.
00:03:40What an awful day he had a week ago at RFK Stadium.
00:03:45The Bengals down with five defensive backs.
00:03:47The pitch goes to the far side, Frank James cuts it back in,
00:03:50moves the ball up to about the 17-yard line.
00:03:55He'll get five back.
00:04:00John Hanna and Brian Holloway, they're going to run to their left.
00:04:04Watch 73 and 76.
00:04:06John's going to come off the block, now he's got a blocked Jackson, a defensive back.
00:04:10Now watch James break to the inside and get a sizable gain.
00:04:13Excellent call now, because now they have third down and 11.
00:04:17They just tried to get half of it.
00:04:20The Patriots with three wide receivers, Starr and Cryer and Stanley Morgan,
00:04:23from the shotgun on third and 11.
00:04:27Mason, he's got Collins out of the backfield.
00:04:30He'll be far short of the first down.
00:04:32Robert Jackson on the tackle.
00:04:34And the Patriots will have to give up the football.
00:04:41Rich Camarillo is coming on.
00:04:43Earlier this year he set a Patriots record for most punts in a season.
00:04:46He has 89.
00:04:49And only 13 of those 89 have sailed into the end zone.
00:04:56Look at that.
00:05:01Mike Martin back in his own 34-yard line.
00:05:06Bengals showing a big rush.
00:05:08And they send Robert Jackson and he almost blocked the punt.
00:05:11And over and Martin's got it at the 41.
00:05:16And he is thrown on his back at the 39-yard line.
00:05:21Rod McSwain, a 40-yard punt by Camarillo.
00:05:25It will be tough to compress the football today
00:05:28with the rigid temperatures down on the playing surface.
00:05:31Here come the Bengals.
00:05:32It'll be Boomer Esiason with a no-huddle offense.
00:05:34And take a look.
00:05:35They are coming right to the line.
00:05:38First down, Cincinnati at the 40-yard line.
00:05:43Play action.
00:05:44Esiason's going to go for it.
00:05:45No.
00:05:46Underthrows the coverage.
00:05:47He's got hooked.
00:05:48He fumbles the ball.
00:05:55Coming into this football game, the Cincinnati Bengals
00:05:59had only given the football away 27 times all year.
00:06:03That had tied Chicago and the Jets for the NFL low.
00:06:07But this time, it is Larry McGrew who's got it.
00:06:10He's got it.
00:06:11He's got it.
00:06:12He's got it.
00:06:13He's got it.
00:06:14He's got it.
00:06:15He's got it.
00:06:16He's got it.
00:06:17He's got it.
00:06:18He's got it.
00:06:19He's got it.
00:06:20He's got it.
00:06:21He's got it.
00:06:22He's got it.
00:06:23It's Larry McGrew who comes up with the turnover.
00:06:26First down, New England at the Cincinnati 47-yard line.
00:06:33Change.
00:06:35Increases the 45 near the 44.
00:06:41Boomer is running a play-action pass.
00:06:44He's obviously looking deep.
00:06:46He can't find anyone deep.
00:06:49He lays the ball off to Brooks.
00:06:50Now Brooks is going to come close to first down.
00:06:52And he fumbles his ball as Steve Nelson, 57,
00:06:56and there's Larry McGrew, number 50, recovering a fumble
00:06:59and have the ball in Cincinnati territory.
00:07:04Second down and eight.
00:07:07Great.
00:07:08To the outside, he can go.
00:07:09He can go.
00:07:22Craig James, 35-yard pickup.
00:07:27Craig James is going to be running to his right.
00:07:30Now watch his vision as he cuts back away from the grain.
00:07:34Eddie Edwards was blocked clearly.
00:07:35Now he gets out into the open,
00:07:37and he just has one man.
00:07:38Switches the ball to the outside so he doesn't fumble,
00:07:41and now they have the ball inside the 10,
00:07:44and that came after that fumble by James Brooks.
00:07:49First down and goal at the 9-yard line.
00:07:54Mosita to pull.
00:07:56Tries to penetrate the left side.
00:07:58No secret who he's running in behind, Sam.
00:08:00Holloway and Hannah, and you're going to see,
00:08:03this is a must game,
00:08:04and the Patriots are going to run the football
00:08:06and they're going to run behind Holloway and Hannah,
00:08:09and there they are right there.
00:08:11The two pro bowlers.
00:08:12Watch Holloway, number 76, and Hannah.
00:08:15Stay on their feet and drive.
00:08:16Hannah gets a little help there
00:08:18because he grabs Krummrei and brings him to the ground.
00:08:22You talk about Krummrei.
00:08:23Boy, what a matchup today between Pete Brock,
00:08:26the center for the Patriots,
00:08:27and Tim Krummrei, the nose tackle for Cincinnati.
00:08:31Second down and goal from the 6.
00:08:33Sweep right.
00:08:34Back pass.
00:08:36And he will be knocked down by Carl Zander,
00:08:39the rookie out of Tennessee.
00:08:40What pursuit by the inside man on the left side.
00:08:43Craig James has thrown two for touchdowns,
00:08:46and we're going as you can see
00:08:48that the halfback, Tony Collins, was wide open.
00:08:51I don't know why James did not throw this football.
00:08:55He's right on the top of the screen.
00:08:56He looks to throw the ball, and Collins was open.
00:08:59It was late, and now, number 91,
00:09:02Carl Zander comes in to make the play.
00:09:04Key third down.
00:09:10Third and goal now from the 8.
00:09:12Out of the shotgun come the Patriots.
00:09:14Eason looking left.
00:09:16Going for his tight end,
00:09:17and it is batted in the air.
00:09:23James Griffin with the coverage.
00:09:27Boy, Stanley Morgan, Sam,
00:09:29almost came in under that batted pass.
00:09:32Well, Cincinnati dodged the bullet right there.
00:09:35You have to give them credit.
00:09:36After the fumble, the Patriots had a first down
00:09:39inside the 10-yard line.
00:09:41They held for three downs,
00:09:42and it was a four-point swing.
00:09:44Now they have an opportunity to kick a field goal
00:09:46as opposed to scoring a touchdown after that fumble.
00:09:51Officially, a 26-yard attempt for Tony Franklin.
00:09:57He gets an airborne and splits the upright.
00:09:59So with 10 minutes and 53 seconds to play
00:10:02on the opening period,
00:10:03the Patriots take advantage of the Bengals' turnover.
00:10:08Just before the start of today's game,
00:10:10this was the only man the New England Patriots introduced.
00:10:13He came out underneath the goalpost
00:10:14and listened to the applause for Julie Adams.
00:10:17Ladies and gentlemen, at this time,
00:10:18the Patriots organization takes great pride
00:10:21in introducing one of the finest men
00:10:23to have ever worn a Patriots uniform,
00:10:26the number 85 defensive end, Mr. Julius Adams.
00:10:34First, Julie Adams in his 15th and final year
00:10:38as a New England Patriot,
00:10:39and what a fitting tribute it was here
00:10:41at Sullivan Stadium just a few moments ago.
00:10:4410 minutes and 53 seconds to play on the opening period.
00:10:46Phil Stone with Sam Radigliano,
00:10:48and the Patriots, following a James Brooks fumble,
00:10:51have taken a 3-0 lead.
00:10:54Franklin lets it go.
00:10:55It is taken at the 14 by Mike Martin.
00:10:57He is up the sideline and wrestled out of bounds
00:11:00at the 28-yard line by Brian Ingram.
00:11:03And that was interesting.
00:11:04They fake a reverse on that play,
00:11:06and so it looks like Cincinnati
00:11:08is going to pull out all the stops
00:11:10because, as Sam White said,
00:11:12there's absolutely no way they're going in the tank today.
00:11:15They want to even this series out.
00:11:17They want to even the record out at 8-8.
00:11:19Sam, you talk about the Bengals.
00:11:21They probably have one of the finest offensive lines
00:11:24in all of football.
00:11:25It looks like a row of five condominiums.
00:11:28They're the biggest offensive line in pro football.
00:11:31Esiason going for the sideline.
00:11:35Eddie Brown cannot hold on to the football.
00:11:38Raymond Claiborne, who is pro-bowl bound
00:11:41for the second time in the last three years
00:11:43on the coverage.
00:11:46There's a man right there, Sam,
00:11:48who has never missed a game in nine years.
00:11:51And he also plays the toughest receiver each week.
00:11:55He's played in 121 consecutive games.
00:11:58Oh, that is abundant.
00:12:00Durability is a tremendous factor for a football player.
00:12:04Again, the Bengals employing the fast break,
00:12:07no huddle offense.
00:12:08Esiason looking right.
00:12:10Unloads.
00:12:12It is caught at the 31.
00:12:16Or was it?
00:12:17Nope, Rodney Holman trapped the football.
00:12:19The big tight end out of Tulane.
00:12:24Boy, he had a big week last Sunday
00:12:27at RFK Stadium.
00:12:28A couple of touchdown catches.
00:12:31Now, Sam, you talked about this
00:12:33New England Patriot defense.
00:12:35Garen Veras, the rookie left in.
00:12:38What a year.
00:12:39He leads all AFC rookies in sacks with nine.
00:12:42The linebacking core, absolutely superb.
00:12:45And the defensive backs are up there as well.
00:12:50Cincinnati with four wide receivers
00:12:52on third down and 10.
00:12:56Esiason looking downfield.
00:12:59Now unloads.
00:13:00He has got Eddie Brown.
00:13:05And he is clotheslined at the 46-yard line
00:13:08by Roland James, a pickup of 26.
00:13:10And look at the Bengals.
00:13:11They're coming right back to the line.
00:13:13No huddle.
00:13:14Right now with the no huddle,
00:13:16they're putting a lot of pressure
00:13:17on the Pat defense.
00:13:18The Pat defense right now
00:13:19has to go into a normal defense.
00:13:22They can't substitute,
00:13:23and they'll probably go into
00:13:24some type of zone coverage.
00:13:26This is to put pressure on the substitution
00:13:28on the part of the Pats.
00:13:32First down, play action.
00:13:34Esiason rolling to the left side.
00:13:38He was trying to hit Mike Martin,
00:13:39who fell down, making his cut
00:13:41at the 30-yard line.
00:13:42Well, you talked about the fast break offense
00:13:45and what it accomplishes, Sam.
00:13:46It seems to me it accomplishes two things.
00:13:48Not only what you said
00:13:49about situation substitution,
00:13:51but it certainly disrupts
00:13:52the normal tempo of a game.
00:13:54Yes, because the defense
00:13:55wants to have an opportunity
00:13:57to see where all the receivers are
00:13:59and study the formations
00:14:00and have a chance to adjust.
00:14:02They cannot adjust to that
00:14:03when you go with the fast break offense.
00:14:06Esiason, 2 of 5 thus far
00:14:08for 33 yards.
00:14:10That's Brown in motion.
00:14:13James Brooks turns the corner.
00:14:16Go!
00:14:22A pickup of 15 yards
00:14:24for the little guy out of Auburn.
00:14:28Brooks needs just 120 yards, Sam.
00:14:30They're going to run a sweep,
00:14:32but watch them fake the reverse.
00:14:34They fake the reverse,
00:14:35and that helps give them a hole right now,
00:14:38and James Brooks makes an excellent decision
00:14:41to avoid 38, rolling James
00:14:43and picks up the first down.
00:14:47From the 30-yard line of the Patriots,
00:14:49inside handoff.
00:14:50Again, it is James Brooks.
00:14:52He moves it to the 28 and no further.
00:14:58The Patriots have always been known
00:15:00for their defensive backs, Sam,
00:15:01but I'll tell you what,
00:15:02Ronnie Lippett,
00:15:04and that is the correct pronunciation.
00:15:05It is Ronnie Lippett.
00:15:08Last week when the team went down to Miami,
00:15:11folks around the Sunshine State,
00:15:13friends of Ronnie's,
00:15:14kept calling him Lippett,
00:15:16and Ronnie turned to all of his
00:15:18Patriot teammates and said,
00:15:20See, I told you it's Lippett.
00:15:21Nobody believed me.
00:15:26Kick pass.
00:15:30Raymond Claiborne had a chance
00:15:32to break to the football
00:15:33and couldn't get footing.
00:15:35Intended for James Brooks.
00:15:37And look at the Bengals.
00:15:38They're coming again with no huddle
00:15:40as the Patriots try desperately
00:15:42to shuttle new men onto
00:15:43the defensive side.
00:15:45Boy, does that create problems
00:15:47for a defense.
00:15:48No question about it.
00:15:50It creates an unsettling problem
00:15:52on the part of the defense
00:15:53just as long as the offense
00:15:55isn't confused themselves.
00:15:58Now, Hoover Siason is a receiver.
00:16:04Eddie Brown, there's the option pitch
00:16:06to James Brooks,
00:16:08and he moves the ball
00:16:09to the 24-yard line.
00:16:12They've used that play before
00:16:14with great effectiveness.
00:16:16This league is a whole group
00:16:18of copycats.
00:16:20That's exactly the innovation
00:16:22that Don Correale put in so well
00:16:24at San Diego.
00:16:26Hoover Siason was a wide receiver,
00:16:28and they came out and actually
00:16:29ran the option.
00:16:31And now they're going to kick
00:16:32a field goal
00:16:34from the 24-yard line.
00:16:37Fourth down and four.
00:16:39Field goal spot will actually be
00:16:42from 42 yards away.
00:16:45Jim Breach has the wind at his back.
00:16:58And after a muffed snap,
00:16:59Kreider gets it down,
00:17:01and Breach whistles it through.
00:17:03Locks out, but they don't
00:17:04have to play on the first period.
00:17:05Deadlock at three.
00:17:09Cleveland is already in.
00:17:11The Jets winning right now
00:17:13makes it even more difficult
00:17:14for the Pats,
00:17:15but the Pats are on the edge
00:17:16of a cliff today.
00:17:17If they take one step back
00:17:18and lose, it's all over.
00:17:20They have to win today,
00:17:21and Raymond Berry said it best.
00:17:23We can't worry about anyone else.
00:17:25We have to win today,
00:17:26and of course, Miami is ahead
00:17:27of Buffalo 7-0.
00:17:30Jim Breach, who just tied
00:17:31this ballgame with a 32-yard,
00:17:34will take that 42-yard field goal,
00:17:36will let it go.
00:17:39At the four-yard line,
00:17:40Steppenstein bubbles the ball,
00:17:43and he is knocked down
00:17:45by Robert Jackson
00:17:46at the 11-yard line.
00:17:52Robert Jackson,
00:17:53with two special teams'
00:17:54tackles today.
00:17:59Eason coming into the ballgame now.
00:18:00He'll begin deep in his own end.
00:18:02That's one for two for five yards
00:18:03early on in the first period,
00:18:05and even eight minutes to play
00:18:06in the first quarter.
00:18:16Basically, it's come out
00:18:17of the eye formation.
00:18:20The feedback.
00:18:21That is Tony Collins,
00:18:22and he is grabbed from behind
00:18:24at the 12-yard line
00:18:25by Carl Zander.
00:18:28Big games all around the NFL today.
00:18:30Right now,
00:18:31let's go to Ahmad Rashad
00:18:32for this update.
00:18:33Ahmad, what's happening?
00:18:36Well, here's the story
00:18:37from Miami.
00:18:38The Dolphins jump in front
00:18:39of Buffalo's 7-0,
00:18:4019-yard connection,
00:18:41fine catch by Bruce Hardy
00:18:43on the throw from Dan Marino.
00:18:44Marino's 29 touchdown passes
00:18:46leads the NFL,
00:18:47and Miami,
00:18:48a 17-point favorite,
00:18:49leads 7-0.
00:18:52That's amazing, Bob,
00:18:53how much you sound like Ahmad.
00:18:54Here comes
00:18:56Craig James
00:18:57out across the 20-yard line
00:18:59and knocked down there.
00:19:01Close to a first down
00:19:02to tackle by Ray Horton.
00:19:10The Patriots,
00:19:11with a first down
00:19:12at the 21-yard line,
00:19:13and what is so incredibly amazing,
00:19:14Sam,
00:19:15about this Patriots' ability
00:19:16to run the football
00:19:17is they're doing it
00:19:18behind an offensive line
00:19:20that was decimated
00:19:21by injuries early,
00:19:23and it has been
00:19:24the Band-Aid treatment
00:19:25virtually all year.
00:19:27Craig James
00:19:28to the 25.
00:19:29Krummrei on the stop.
00:19:34Rod Humanack
00:19:35is their offensive line coach,
00:19:36and he worked,
00:19:37we worked together
00:19:38for five years at Cleveland.
00:19:40He's done an outstanding job.
00:19:41Of course,
00:19:42he has some very fine players
00:19:44in that offensive line,
00:19:45beginning with the two Pro Bowlers,
00:19:47Brian Holloway
00:19:48and John Henna.
00:19:53Second down,
00:19:55and seven
00:19:56from the 25.
00:19:59Sweep this side.
00:20:00Collins
00:20:01across the 30-yard line.
00:20:02He's into the bingles,
00:20:03secondary,
00:20:04and he is pulled down
00:20:05from behind by James Griffin.
00:20:08Collins rambles for 30,
00:20:10make that 27 yards.
00:20:15Tony Collins
00:20:16has been used primarily
00:20:17as a receiver
00:20:18coming out of the backfield,
00:20:19but they're running a sweep
00:20:20and watch him use his blockers
00:20:22and wait for the crowd
00:20:23and wait for the crack,
00:20:24and there's the crack.
00:20:25John Henna can get through,
00:20:26so can you, Tony,
00:20:27and now watch him
00:20:28put added yardage on it
00:20:30as James Griffin
00:20:31makes the tackle,
00:20:32and I believe
00:20:33the Patriots today
00:20:34are going to try
00:20:35to run the football
00:20:36right at Cincinnati.
00:20:42From the midfield stripe
00:20:43at his first down,
00:20:44play-action Eason,
00:20:45looking long.
00:20:46He will air it out!
00:20:54Eason, Eason, Eason, Eason!
00:20:56Eason, Eason, Eason, Eason!
00:21:26His 47th career TD,
00:21:28that, my friends,
00:21:29is a team record
00:21:30here in New England.
00:21:32And that's why
00:21:33speed kills.
00:21:35That touchdown came
00:21:37because of Morgan's speed.
00:21:44Tony Franklin
00:21:45his 37th conversion
00:21:47in 38 tries.
00:21:49Block stops at 5,
00:21:5028 to play on the Patriots,
00:21:52and a must-win situation
00:21:53out in front.
00:21:57That 50-yard touchdown pass
00:21:59from Eason to Stanley Morgan,
00:22:01only the fourth touchdown
00:22:03scored in the first period
00:22:05by the Patriots
00:22:06in their last 12 games.
00:22:09They are not
00:22:10a first-period team,
00:22:12to be sure.
00:22:13You lose games
00:22:14in the first quarter, Phil,
00:22:15and you win them
00:22:16in the fourth quarter.
00:22:17Short kickoff.
00:22:19The ball will bounce.
00:22:20Mike Martin,
00:22:21it is heading out of bounds.
00:22:23And the Bengals
00:22:24will have the ball
00:22:25even better than a return,
00:22:26as Martin
00:22:27had the foresight
00:22:29to shove it out of bounds
00:22:30at the 25-yard line.
00:22:32I have wondered why
00:22:34the Pats do not use
00:22:35the vertical game
00:22:36with the speed
00:22:37that they have.
00:22:38But watch this pass,
00:22:39and all it is is speed.
00:22:40Now watch Morgan.
00:22:41Concentrate.
00:22:42Reach out.
00:22:43Pull the ball in.
00:22:44And that was speed
00:22:46and concentration.
00:22:48And Ray Horton,
00:22:49number 20,
00:22:50didn't have a chance.
00:22:52I think they need to do this
00:22:53more often
00:22:54right now.
00:22:55Take a look at that score
00:22:56by quarters.
00:22:57The Bengals
00:22:58outscoring the opposition
00:22:592-1.
00:23:00The Patriots
00:23:01being outscored badly
00:23:02in the first period.
00:23:03Here come the Bengals
00:23:04at the 24-yard line.
00:23:07Larry Kennebrew
00:23:10bangs his way out
00:23:11near the 30-yard line,
00:23:12and he's knocked down.
00:23:13Let's go back
00:23:14to that graphic
00:23:15a little more.
00:23:16Take a look
00:23:17at the first period
00:23:18for the Bengals.
00:23:19115 points.
00:23:20In the fourth period,
00:23:21they're being outscored.
00:23:22Now look at the Patriots.
00:23:23The exact opposite is true.
00:23:25A lackluster team
00:23:26in the first period,
00:23:27but, oh, Sam,
00:23:28they pour it on
00:23:29in the final 15.
00:23:33Second down
00:23:34and six yards to go.
00:23:36A flag is down,
00:23:38and Kennebrew
00:23:39finally is hammered down
00:23:40very close
00:23:41to the first down area.
00:23:43Andre Tippett
00:23:44and Larry McGrew
00:23:45combined to bring
00:23:46Larry Kennebrew down.
00:23:47Kennebrew weighing in
00:23:48at about 275, 80 pounds
00:23:50in his third year
00:23:51out of Tennessee State.
00:23:53And the flag will go
00:23:54against the Bengals.
00:23:57Sam, do you share
00:23:58some people's sentiment
00:23:59that Larry Kennebrew
00:24:01has got to get his weight down
00:24:03to be more effective?
00:24:04No question about it.
00:24:05They had the same experience
00:24:07with Pete Johnson.
00:24:08Illegal motion.
00:24:09Number 21 on the up.
00:24:10Still second down.
00:24:12Larry Kennebrew
00:24:13is a big, strong back
00:24:15and much in the mold
00:24:17of a Paul Brown theory.
00:24:19Paul Brown always believed
00:24:20in having that big, strong back
00:24:22where you can get
00:24:23that critical yardage.
00:24:24You get a lot of people
00:24:25who run outside,
00:24:26but you need
00:24:27that big, strong back.
00:24:28He's just got to stay away
00:24:29from Dunkin' Donuts.
00:24:33Who's going to tell him?
00:24:35You are, Phil.
00:24:36You ask the question.
00:24:38That'll tie it in
00:24:39for Cincinnati.
00:24:40There's Kennebrew again,
00:24:41and he is knocked off his feet
00:24:43by Garen Barrett,
00:24:45the rookie out of Stanford.
00:24:46A submarine shot
00:24:48on Kennebrew.
00:24:49And again,
00:24:50the Bengals line up
00:24:51with no huddle.
00:24:52Third down and 13.
00:25:02Bengals making big changes.
00:25:03Now, here comes
00:25:04Martin Collinsworth
00:25:05coming into the ballgame.
00:25:06So is Steve Kreider.
00:25:07Cincinnati abandoning
00:25:08the double-tied-in formation.
00:25:1113, 12 seconds left now
00:25:13on the 32nd clock.
00:25:16Eight, seven.
00:25:18The Siason will have to hurry.
00:25:19They're inside five.
00:25:24And he just got it.
00:25:30Almost intercepted.
00:25:33Eddie Brown,
00:25:34the intended receiver.
00:25:35Instead, he almost found
00:25:36Rod McSwain.
00:25:38Well, McSwain is a lucky man
00:25:40to be in uniform today.
00:25:42Watch Boomer right now.
00:25:44He's a little off focus,
00:25:45but he finds him.
00:25:46But there's two people
00:25:47around.
00:25:48But had he thrown
00:25:49that ball upfield,
00:25:51James and McSwain
00:25:52were not in the position
00:25:54to intercept that.
00:25:55That would have been
00:25:56a completion to Eddie Brown.
00:25:57The reason why I say McSwain
00:25:58lucky to be in uniform,
00:25:59his car hit an ice patch
00:26:01Friday night here
00:26:02in the Boston area.
00:26:03Slid off the road,
00:26:04and he suffered
00:26:05just a little minor cut
00:26:06on the bottom of his chin.
00:26:07Could have been
00:26:08much, much worse.
00:26:09Pat McAnally to kick it away
00:26:11to Irving Fryer.
00:26:14He's returned two
00:26:15for touchdowns
00:26:16already this year.
00:26:17A knuckleball punt.
00:26:18Fryer at the 40.
00:26:38And you want to know why
00:26:40number 80 is on his way
00:26:42to the Pro Bowl.
00:26:43That's why.
00:26:45And this was a knuckleball.
00:26:46Now watch the speed.
00:26:47Watch the speed.
00:26:48Get outside the wall.
00:26:49Once you get outside the wall,
00:26:51find a running late.
00:26:52Watch his eyes now.
00:26:53He's looking to cut back
00:26:54right there.
00:26:55He just doesn't have it.
00:26:56Now he goes back.
00:26:57He makes as much as he can.
00:26:58But Irving Fryer
00:27:00can beat you many ways.
00:27:04The crowd is roaring.
00:27:05They have just gotten word
00:27:06that the Browns are beating
00:27:08the Jets at the Meadowlands.
00:27:11Craig James has the football.
00:27:13But not for long.
00:27:14Eddie Edwards
00:27:15jumped right on his back.
00:27:18Eddie Edwards,
00:27:19eight and a half sacks
00:27:20coming into this ballgame.
00:27:21A number one pick back in 1977
00:27:23out of Miami.
00:27:26He's an impact player, Phil,
00:27:27for many years now.
00:27:29He makes the big play.
00:27:30This is a counterplay
00:27:31and Eddie Edwards
00:27:32is just too fast.
00:27:33Too much speed.
00:27:34He's a big, strong,
00:27:36very mobile defensive end
00:27:38and they counted on him
00:27:39not being able to catch
00:27:40Craig James.
00:27:43Two minutes,
00:27:4445 seconds to play.
00:27:45Ten, three, Patriots
00:27:47looking for more.
00:27:49A little post-pattern
00:27:50intended for Steppen
00:27:52starring Louis Breeden
00:27:53on the coverage.
00:27:56Well, I told you
00:27:57about the goings on
00:27:58at Giant Stadium
00:27:59at the Meadowlands.
00:28:00How about that?
00:28:01It is seven to three.
00:28:02Cleveland over the Jets.
00:28:05Ryan Brennan,
00:28:06a 37-yard touchdown.
00:28:07Brennan, a 37-yard punt
00:28:08return there
00:28:09has given the Browns a lead.
00:28:11Miami continuing to lead
00:28:12the Buffalo Bills
00:28:13at the Orange Bowl
00:28:14seven to nothing.
00:28:17Eason,
00:28:18two of four,
00:28:1955 yards.
00:28:20One of them,
00:28:21a 50-yard bomb
00:28:22to Stanley Morgan
00:28:23for the go-ahead touchdown.
00:28:25Cincinnati with five
00:28:26defensive backs
00:28:27on third and 15.
00:28:29Eason
00:28:31now lets it go.
00:28:35Pass complete
00:28:36by Tony Collins
00:28:37but tremendous pursuit
00:28:38by the Bengals' defense.
00:28:40Emmanuel King
00:28:41on the tackle
00:28:42but Eason
00:28:43fortunate
00:28:44to get that pass off.
00:28:47They're going to put
00:28:48a lot of pressure
00:28:49on Grogan.
00:28:50Now the pressure
00:28:51comes from the outside.
00:28:52He avoids it now.
00:28:53He reloads,
00:28:54gets the ball to Eason.
00:28:55Now watch them close.
00:28:57Nice tackle
00:28:58right there
00:28:59by number 90
00:29:00Emmanuel King
00:29:01and they've got to line up
00:29:02and kick the field goal.
00:29:04Good defense
00:29:06Good defensive series
00:29:07by Cincinnati.
00:29:10Tony Franklin
00:29:11kicking into a brutal win.
00:29:12This from 42 yards away.
00:29:15Oh, he got it all.
00:29:19He pushed it off.
00:29:24Battles
00:29:25stop the time piece
00:29:26with a minute 49 seconds
00:29:27to play.
00:29:28We've got a 10-3
00:29:29Patriot ballgame.
00:29:35Any question
00:29:36this ball club
00:29:37is in the hunt
00:29:38for a playoff spot.
00:29:39Tony Franklin
00:29:40misses from 42 yards away
00:29:41on the discussed
00:29:42registering right there.
00:29:43So the Cincinnati Bengals
00:29:44will take control
00:29:45of the football
00:29:46and their wide receivers
00:29:47Sam are employing
00:29:48the use of these
00:29:49actually what look to be
00:29:50like divers gloves.
00:29:51They're actually scuba gloves.
00:29:52They came into play
00:29:53about four or five years ago
00:29:54and they actually give
00:29:55the receivers
00:29:56a good feel for the ball.
00:29:57But I'm an old timer Phil.
00:29:58I like to take those gloves
00:29:59and just throw them away
00:30:00and play with your hands.
00:30:02That's the natural feel.
00:30:06Assassin
00:30:08the baseball slide
00:30:09at the 31 yard line.
00:30:10Don Blackman
00:30:11on the stop
00:30:12Boomer runs for
00:30:15about five yards
00:30:21at 27 seconds remaining
00:30:23clock running
00:30:24in the first period.
00:30:30Eddie Brown splits
00:30:31to the top of your screen.
00:30:33Collinsworth now
00:30:34goes in motion
00:30:36assassin
00:30:37he has got
00:30:38Collinsworth on the ball
00:30:39a typical out of scrimmage.
00:30:40Oh and Chris
00:30:41was running free
00:30:42and while they regroup
00:30:43let's go to Bob Costas
00:30:44for this update.
00:30:45Bob what's going on?
00:30:47Here's what's happening Phil
00:30:48Dave Jennings
00:30:49punts out of his own
00:30:50end zone for the Jets.
00:30:51Brian Brennan of the Browns
00:30:52takes it at the 37
00:30:53and doesn't stop
00:30:54until he's back
00:30:55into that end zone.
00:30:56Jennings is the last man
00:30:57with a crack at him
00:30:58can't catch him
00:30:59it's 7-3 Browns
00:31:00late in the first
00:31:03All right Bob
00:31:04we thank you for that update
00:31:05situation here
00:31:06in Foxboro
00:31:0710-3 Patriots
00:31:09third down
00:31:10and 5 for the Bengals
00:31:11assassin
00:31:12with good time to throw
00:31:14hits his big tight end
00:31:15Rodney Holman
00:31:16his second catch
00:31:17of the afternoon
00:31:18he will be I believe
00:31:19about a yard short
00:31:20of the first down
00:31:21Ronnie Lippett
00:31:22on the tackle
00:31:24It's going to be very close
00:31:25and I don't like
00:31:26the spot
00:31:28did not like the spot
00:31:30absolutely amazing
00:31:31how those officials
00:31:32can by inches
00:31:33make a decision
00:31:35between a difference
00:31:36of keeping the ball
00:31:38and having to punt
00:31:42I take it by that statement
00:31:43you think he had
00:31:44the first down by plenty
00:31:45I think he had
00:31:46the first down
00:31:47and I didn't like the way
00:31:48that the official
00:31:49on the sideline
00:31:50spotted the ball
00:31:51I thought he clearly
00:31:52was across the 35
00:31:54but it's all academic
00:31:57and right there
00:31:58Red Cash
00:31:59had accidentally kicked it
00:32:01You think he heard me Phil
00:32:05So with 52 seconds
00:32:06to play
00:32:07the Cincinnati Bengals
00:32:08have a first down
00:32:09they will retain
00:32:10possession
00:32:11assassin
00:32:12thus far
00:32:133 of 9
00:32:1438 yards
00:32:21On the 35 yard line
00:32:22again the Bengals
00:32:23employ the no huddle offense
00:32:24as they have
00:32:25throughout the first period
00:32:30draw play
00:32:32Brooks
00:32:33down at the line
00:32:34of scrimmage
00:32:36Andre Tippett

00:32:42ahead to the 38
00:32:46What can you say
00:32:47that hasn't already
00:32:48been said about that man
00:32:49right there
00:32:50Andre Tippett
00:32:51his fourth year
00:32:52out of Iowa
00:32:53incidentally
00:32:54is Hawkeyes
00:32:55the Iowa Hawkeyes
00:32:56are heading
00:32:57for the granddaddy
00:32:58of them all
00:32:59on NBC

00:33:02the sweep left
00:33:04and the Patriots
00:33:05pursue
00:33:06and you can thank
00:33:07Don Blackman
00:33:08Sam Ritigliano
00:33:09and he was not even in
00:33:10on the stop
00:33:12Don Blackman
00:33:13and Tippett
00:33:14are two outside linebackers
00:33:15that are defensive ends
00:33:17they have the strength
00:33:18and power
00:33:19to play as defensive ends
00:33:20and they have the mobility
00:33:21to play as a linebacker
00:33:23end of the first period
00:33:24and it's the Patriots
00:33:25on top of the Bengals
00:33:26by a touchdown
00:33:30Here's a look at that
00:33:31Cincinnati
00:33:32offensive machine
00:33:33huddled around
00:33:34Sam Weitz
00:33:35on the near side line
00:33:36I'll tell you
00:33:37they don't go out
00:33:38to the field of play
00:33:39until the moment
00:33:40they have to get there
00:33:41and the reason for that
00:33:42is they don't want to see
00:33:43who the running backs
00:33:44and who the receivers
00:33:45are in a game
00:33:46could it be
00:33:47four wide receivers
00:33:48could it be
00:33:49two wide receivers
00:33:50and a tight end
00:33:51could it be
00:33:52a single back
00:33:53the Patriots
00:33:54owning the statistical edge
00:33:55and a touchdown lead
00:33:56as we begin
00:33:57the second period of play
00:33:58here in Foxboro
00:33:59the Bengals
00:34:00with the
00:34:01second best
00:34:02total offense
00:34:03in the National Football League
00:34:06going after
00:34:07the New England Patriots
00:34:08with the sixth
00:34:09most prolific
00:34:10defense in the league
00:34:11Esiason
00:34:13right across the middle
00:34:14Mike Martin
00:34:15has the ball
00:34:16at the Patriots

00:34:18Fred Marion
00:34:19a touchdown
00:34:20saving touchdown
00:34:24you have four wide receivers
00:34:25on the line of scrimmage
00:34:26he's searching now
00:34:27for the one-on-one
00:34:28where's the one-on-one
00:34:29you have a wide receiver
00:34:30isolated on the free safety
00:34:32and this football team
00:34:34Cincinnati
00:34:35as we said on the top
00:34:36is a vertical team
00:34:37you're going to have
00:34:38big plays
00:34:39they may not make it
00:34:40on first or second down
00:34:41but they have one down
00:34:42within the series
00:34:43to make a big play
00:34:44and they'll get into
00:34:45a scoring contest
00:34:46with the Pats
00:34:47a 28 yard pickup
00:34:49Marion
00:34:50a touchdown saving tackle
00:34:51at the 32 yard line
00:34:55Kennebrew
00:34:56flags flying
00:34:57all over the place
00:34:58look at Larry go
00:34:59to the 20 yard line
00:35:00runs for 12
00:35:01a first down
00:35:02but I believe
00:35:03it's going to be called back
00:35:04Fred Cashin
00:35:05stops the clock
00:35:06and while they sort things out
00:35:08let's go to Bob Costas
00:35:09Bob folks around here
00:35:10pulling for a Cleveland
00:35:11victory in New York
00:35:14then they won't be pleased
00:35:15by this news Phil
00:35:16Ken O'Brien
00:35:17throws deep
00:35:18looks like an interception
00:35:19for Don Rogers
00:35:20but Kurt Sohn
00:35:21enters Mr. Rogers' neighborhood
00:35:22takes his possessions away
00:35:24and the Jets
00:35:25have a 39 yard touchdown
00:35:26back to you Phil
00:35:29Sam obviously
00:35:30Bob Costas
00:35:31unaware this is
00:35:32the holiday season
00:35:33he is not supposed to be
00:35:34the bearer of bad tidings
00:35:3814.04 to play
00:35:40first half here
00:35:41in Foxboro
00:35:43Cincinnati threatening
00:35:44to tie the ball game
00:35:45it is first down
00:35:46at the 20
00:35:48the flag was against
00:35:49the New England Patriots
00:35:51so the 12 yard pickup
00:35:52by Kennebrew stood
00:35:54and it is
00:35:55Kennebrew again
00:35:56through the left side
00:35:57following Brian Blatos
00:35:58and Anthony Munoz
00:35:59Fred Marion
00:36:00on the tackle
00:36:01white people around
00:36:02the Patriots organization
00:36:03visibly upset
00:36:04that Fred Marion
00:36:05will not be a part
00:36:06of the Pro Bowl
00:36:07in Hawaii Sam
00:36:08the players

00:36:14and 82 tackles
00:36:15he's had a banner year
00:36:16for his first year
00:36:17as a matter of fact
00:36:18they let a number 1 draft choice
00:36:20Rick Sanford go
00:36:21to put him in at free safety
00:36:23again it is
00:36:24Kennebrew
00:36:25same exact play
00:36:26following Blatos
00:36:27and Munoz
00:36:28this time it is
00:36:29Julie Adams and Fred Marion
00:36:30combining on the tackle
00:36:31well what a career
00:36:32it has been
00:36:33for Julie Adams
00:36:3415th year out of
00:36:35Texas Southern
00:36:36you go back
00:36:37in his 15 years
00:36:38how are these numbers for you
00:36:39874 tackles

00:36:4284 and a half
00:36:44career sacks
00:36:45without question
00:36:46I was here
00:36:47in 1971
00:36:49when we drafted
00:36:50Julius Adams
00:36:51and he's as fine a man
00:36:52as he is a football player
00:36:55Esiason 4 of 10
00:36:56for 66
00:36:57the crowd here
00:36:5810 in defense
00:37:03it is
00:37:04Kennebrew
00:37:05diving across the top
00:37:06inside the Patriots
00:37:0710 a first down
00:37:08for the Bengals
00:37:09again it is
00:37:10Julie Adams
00:37:12boy that is
00:37:13weight versus weight
00:37:14going at each other
00:37:15Anthony Munoz
00:37:16on Julius Adams
00:37:17like 2 apartment houses
00:37:18and now
00:37:19Julius Adams
00:37:20has to come off
00:37:21and tackle
00:37:22Kennebrew
00:37:23that's like trying to
00:37:24recover off a block
00:37:25of an Angus
00:37:26and another Angus
00:37:27running right at you
00:37:28that's tough on Julius
00:37:29but he's big enough
00:37:30to do it
00:37:32talking about Anguses
00:37:33that's where
00:37:34Julie Adams is going
00:37:35to raise black Anguses
00:37:37in Macon Georgia
00:37:40that's Brooks in motion
00:37:43and Kennebrew
00:37:44in motion
00:37:45and when he goes
00:37:46in motion
00:37:47holes open up
00:37:48this time it is
00:37:49Steve Nelson
00:37:50with the one down
00:37:51saving tackle
00:37:52at the 5 yard line
00:37:54second down
00:37:55and goal
00:37:56Cincinnati trailing
00:37:5710-3
00:37:5811-45
00:37:59the play on the first half
00:38:02Kennebrew now
00:38:037 carries
00:38:04for 29 yards
00:38:14look for the isolation
00:38:15outside
00:38:16right now
00:38:17to either
00:38:18Collingsworth
00:38:20that's James Brooks
00:38:23Brooks
00:38:24bounce to the outside
00:38:25and Marion
00:38:26bounces him out of bounds
00:38:36Kennebrew now
00:38:37is blocking
00:38:38for Brooks
00:38:39now watch him
00:38:40take on the
00:38:41outside
00:38:42the strong safety
00:38:43now he bounces to the outside
00:38:44and look at the speed
00:38:45of Fred Marion
00:38:46he came from the middle
00:38:47of the defense
00:38:48to make the play
00:38:49and Phil
00:38:50that's what a free safety
00:38:51has to do
00:38:52he's unblocked
00:38:53he has to make
00:38:54those kind of plays
00:38:55and he's been doing that
00:38:56all year long
00:38:58now from the
00:38:59I formation
00:39:00Kennebrew the up back
00:39:03little player pass
00:39:04James Brooks
00:39:06he is hit in the back field
00:39:07by Jimmy Bowman
00:39:08but escapes the tackle
00:39:09and moves it to the
00:39:104 yard line
00:39:12again it is
00:39:13number 31
00:39:14Fred Marion
00:39:15who Sam missed
00:39:16virtually all week
00:39:17with the flu
00:39:18in what was a
00:39:19shortened week already
00:39:20for the Patriots
00:39:21now watch Bowman
00:39:22right here
00:39:23he's looking to throw
00:39:24in the end zone
00:39:25there's no one there
00:39:26he lays the ball
00:39:27off to Brooks
00:39:28now Brooks has to
00:39:29stop by Claiborne
00:39:3026
00:39:31but here comes
00:39:32Fred Marion
00:39:33to make the stop
00:39:34and now
00:39:35Cincinnati has to
00:39:36line up and
00:39:37kick a field goal
00:39:38it's a 4 point swing
00:39:39again
00:39:40reason why it was
00:39:41a shortened week
00:39:42for New England
00:39:43remember they played
00:39:44Monday night
00:39:45in Miami
00:39:46so far on the year
00:39:476 of 7
00:39:48from this range
00:39:49he's 1 for 1 today
00:39:50from 42 yards
00:39:53Ryder puts it down
00:39:55and Breach
00:39:56sends it through
00:39:57that stops the clock
00:39:58with 10.26 to play
00:39:59in the second period
00:40:00and it's the
00:40:01Cincinnati Bengals
00:40:02now within 4

00:40:31at Sullivan Stadium
00:40:32for the 16th
00:40:33and final game
00:40:34and the ball
00:40:35falls right off the tee
00:40:36as Jim Breach
00:40:37approached it
00:40:40that's something we used
00:40:41to do in Sandlot ball
00:40:42a lot
00:40:44I
00:40:45I have seen
00:40:46kickers at times
00:40:48hit the ball
00:40:50and fall into a
00:40:52unplanned
00:40:53onside kick
00:40:54but fortunately
00:40:55Jim Breach
00:40:57took that bad pitch
00:40:58and didn't hit it
00:41:03this time Breach gets it
00:41:05whistles a line drive
00:41:07taken at the 12 yard line
00:41:08by starting
00:41:09he's across the 25
00:41:11across the 30
00:41:12and knocked down there
00:41:14Emmanuel King
00:41:15on the tackle
00:41:17now here comes
00:41:18Tony Eason in company
00:41:20now the Browns
00:41:21have come back to tie
00:41:22the Jets at 10 apiece
00:41:23at Giant Stadium
00:41:24at the Meadowlands
00:41:25midway through the second period
00:41:26Miami
00:41:27not by much
00:41:28over the Bills
00:41:29of course Sam you and I
00:41:30saw Buffalo
00:41:31and the Steelers
00:41:32play last week
00:41:33and Buffalo gave Pittsburgh
00:41:34all the Steelers
00:41:35wanted early on
00:41:36in that ball game
00:41:37Detroit and Chicago
00:41:38the Lions
00:41:39just about unbeatable
00:41:40underneath the Silverdome
00:41:41in Pontiac
00:41:44Craig James
00:41:45through the right side
00:41:46this time following
00:41:47Ron Wooten
00:41:48and Steve Moore
00:41:49you talk about Steve Moore
00:41:50he and Brian Holloway
00:41:52the only two
00:41:53on that Patriot
00:41:54offensive line
00:41:55that have played
00:41:56every game this year
00:41:58they were a malign
00:41:59offense coming out of camp
00:42:01but they do such an
00:42:02outstanding job
00:42:03of drafting talented players
00:42:05that they were able
00:42:06to substitute
00:42:07and just keep winning
00:42:11second down
00:42:12in five
00:42:13from the 38
00:42:15James
00:42:17knocked down
00:42:18by Reggie Williams
00:42:26three years in a row
00:42:27the Bengals
00:42:28man of the year
00:42:29watch Craig James
00:42:30bounce to the outside
00:42:31now watch Reggie Williams
00:42:32came off the block
00:42:33by Collins
00:42:34and made the play
00:42:35Tony Collins
00:42:36the lead back
00:42:37has got to block
00:42:38the outside line
00:42:39backer
00:42:40and Reggie Williams
00:42:41was able to avoid him
00:42:42and come up for
00:42:43a negative play
00:42:44for the Pats
00:42:45I don't know
00:42:46why the Pats
00:42:47do not throw
00:42:48the ball up
00:42:49field vertically
00:42:50they have outstanding
00:42:51speed outside
00:42:53now the Bengals
00:42:54think they're going
00:42:55to go long
00:42:56they have seven
00:42:57defensive backs
00:42:58in the ball game
00:42:59Eason
00:43:00looking deep
00:43:01now sprints out
00:43:02he'll run for a bunch
00:43:10Eason
00:43:11for 21 yards
00:43:12to the Bengals
00:43:1344 yard line
00:43:14John Simmons
00:43:15ran him out
00:43:16when you have
00:43:17all the defensive
00:43:18backs there
00:43:19they can't cover the run
00:43:20there's no place to go
00:43:21and this is what
00:43:22a good athlete
00:43:23at quarterback
00:43:24can do for you
00:43:25now he's
00:43:26pointing up field
00:43:27he doesn't want to
00:43:28run up field
00:43:29run out of bounds
00:43:30Tony
00:43:31it's a lot better there
00:43:32he got a key first down
00:43:33after a 21 yard run
00:43:40Raymond Berry
00:43:41looking on
00:43:42he knows his
00:43:43Patriots can get
00:43:44to the playoffs
00:43:45with a victory
00:43:46here comes Cummins
00:43:48and there was just
00:43:49a great bit of work
00:43:50by Jeff Shue
00:43:51fighting off a block
00:43:54threw his blocker
00:43:55off and nailed
00:43:56the ball carrier
00:44:01Jeff Shue
00:44:02in his fifth year
00:44:03out of Minnesota
00:44:05three and a half sacks
00:44:06on the year
00:44:07well at Arrowhead
00:44:08Stadium in Kansas City
00:44:09it's the Chiefs

00:44:23ball spotted
00:44:24at the Cincinnati

00:44:27here comes James
00:44:29bubbles the football
00:44:31the Bengals have it
00:44:32and they can go
00:44:33all the way
00:44:35Reggie Williams
00:44:36with the hit
00:44:37Zander picked up
00:44:38the loose football
00:44:39and carried it
00:44:40all the way
00:44:41to the 16 yard line
00:44:48Ason the guy
00:44:49who knocked him
00:44:50out of bounds
00:44:51now here's James
00:44:52now breaking through
00:44:53now Reggie Williams
00:44:54makes the tackle
00:44:55and that's why
00:44:56that ball is shaped
00:44:57that way
00:44:58look how it bounces
00:44:59in the air
00:45:00and it's going
00:45:01to go
00:45:02all the way
00:45:03look how it bounces
00:45:04right up in the hands
00:45:05of Carl Zander
00:45:06now he just wished
00:45:07he had another gear
00:45:08if he would have
00:45:09had another gear
00:45:10he would have had a touchdown
00:45:11because that was
00:45:12the quarterback
00:45:13that knocked him
00:45:14out of bounds
00:45:17Zander a rookie
00:45:18out of volunteer land
00:45:21he gives the Bengals

00:46:05meaning of this
00:46:06holiday season
00:46:07being that it is
00:46:08better to give
00:46:09than to receive
00:46:10have given the
00:46:11ball up to the
00:46:12Patriots at the

00:47:34they've given up
00:47:35a total of
00:47:36403 points
00:47:37and very
00:47:38frankly
00:47:39that's why
00:47:40Cincinnati
00:47:41is not in the
00:47:42playoff picture
00:47:46you go back
00:47:47just three weeks ago
00:47:48they were the odds
00:47:49against the

00:47:55the left side
00:47:56moves the ball
00:47:57near the 20

00:48:20Galley is to
00:48:21Raymond Berry's
00:48:22ballclub certainly
00:48:23what John
00:48:24Riggins is to
00:48:25Joe Gibbs
00:48:26in Washington
00:48:27one of the
00:48:28finest role
00:48:29players
00:48:30specialty
00:48:31players
00:48:32in the National
00:48:33Football League
00:48:34he's in
00:48:35four of six
00:48:36now for 61
00:48:37yards and a
00:48:38touchdown
00:48:39James
00:48:40he
00:48:41dives across
00:48:42the 10 yard
00:48:43line I believe
00:48:44he's picked up
00:48:45another Patriot
00:48:46first down
00:48:47John
00:48:48Riggins
00:48:49cuts his legs
00:48:50out from under
00:48:51him
00:48:52he's running
00:48:53on the right
00:48:54side behind
00:48:55Steve Moore
00:48:56and Ron
00:48:57Wooten
00:48:58and now all he
00:48:59is doing is
00:49:00running straight
00:49:01to the goal
00:49:02post and
00:49:03apparently a
00:49:04fine hole
00:49:05open form
00:49:06and they ran
00:49:07right at
00:49:08the Cincinnati
00:49:09defense with
00:49:10a first
00:49:11goal on
00:49:12the seven
00:49:13yard line
00:49:14and that
00:49:15interception

00:49:18college
00:49:19nothing to
00:49:20him
00:49:21John
00:49:22Hanna
00:49:23simply could
00:49:24not get out
00:49:25in front
00:49:26quick enough
00:49:27I don't know
00:49:28why you want to
00:49:29go east and
00:49:30west when you're
00:49:31going so well
00:49:32right at
00:49:33Cincinnati's
00:49:34team
00:49:35why go from
00:49:36sideline to
00:49:37sideline when
00:49:38you're doing so
00:49:39well going
00:49:40right at the
00:49:41defense
00:49:43second down and
00:49:44goal now from the
00:49:45nine yard line just
00:49:46outside the nine with
00:49:47four twenty four to
00:49:48play in the first half
00:49:49stay tuned NFL 85
00:49:50coming your way at
00:49:51halftime
00:50:13a nine yard
00:50:14touchdown run for
00:50:15Tony Collins
00:50:16and it's a play
00:50:17San Matigliano
00:50:18that has been around
00:50:19football for as
00:50:20long as I've been
00:50:21around
00:50:22it was a misdirected
00:50:23play
00:50:24they went to
00:50:25James on the
00:50:26right
00:50:27Collins came to
00:50:28the left
00:50:29for a touchdown
00:50:30and that
00:50:31interception just
00:50:32cost them
00:50:33Cincinnati
00:50:34seven points
00:50:36two Cincinnati
00:50:37miscues and the
00:50:38Patriots have
00:50:39turned them into
00:50:40ten points
00:50:41here in this ball
00:50:42game
00:50:43we'll be back in
00:50:44Foxborough
00:50:51they are on their
00:50:52feet here in New
00:50:53England as
00:50:54Franklin lets it
00:50:55sail
00:50:56and it's a
00:50:57touchdown run
00:50:58for San
00:50:59Matigliano
00:51:00and it's a
00:51:01touchdown run
00:51:02for the
00:51:03Patriots
00:51:05it'll be Mike
00:51:06Martin at the
00:51:07six yard line
00:51:10the flag is down
00:51:11at the 22
00:51:12as Martin
00:51:13crashes across
00:51:14the 26
00:51:26well as if the
00:51:27Bengals weren't
00:51:28having enough
00:51:29problems they'll
00:51:30now be penalized
00:51:31way inside their
00:51:32own 20
00:51:33inside that block
00:51:34by 67
00:51:35Steve Moore
00:51:36and look at the
00:51:37power of Collins
00:51:38two years ago
00:51:39he was a thousand
00:51:40yard rusher
00:51:41he's used mostly as
00:51:42a receiver right now
00:51:43but an excellent
00:51:44running back
00:51:45and he spikes the
00:51:46ball and that
00:51:47came as a result
00:51:48of Boomer
00:51:49Esiason's
00:51:50interception
00:51:51for Collins only
00:51:52his third
00:51:53touchdown rushing
00:51:54this year
00:51:55here come the
00:51:56Bengals as you
00:51:57look at the
00:51:58Patriots
00:51:59scoring drive
00:52:00it took them
00:52:01over three and a
00:52:02half yards
00:52:03for Collins
00:52:04nine yard
00:52:05touchdown run
00:52:06that has sent
00:52:07the Wengledown
00:52:08to a 17 to
00:52:09six lead over
00:52:10Cincinnati
00:52:11and motion is
00:52:12Kennebrew
00:52:13James Brooks
00:52:14has the football

00:52:18of the 11 yard
00:52:19line by Don
00:52:20Blackman
00:52:21now the Patriots
00:52:22had to wonder
00:52:23not long ago
00:52:24Sam
00:52:25how effective
00:52:26their defense
00:52:27would be
00:52:28when Ken

00:52:30injured
00:52:31and caused

00:53:58turn in the first period a 40
00:53:59yard job as a man who is on his
00:54:05way to the Pro Bowl one of seven
00:54:07New England Patriots destined
00:54:09for the Aloha Bowl.
00:54:12The punt returner on the Patriots
00:54:16is just another extension of
00:54:18their offense and Pat better
00:54:19make sure that he doesn't kick
00:54:21one of those blue daughters that
00:54:23are returnable.
00:54:24Oh look at this.
00:54:25He shanked it at point was
00:54:32hardly 13 yards maybe 14 yards
00:54:37officially a 13 yard punt.
00:54:42That probably was a little bit
00:54:44taken by the return.
00:54:46Now let's watch him watch the
00:54:47concentration now.
00:54:48He should get his foot in there
00:54:50and hit the sweet spot but it
00:54:51hits off the left side of the
00:54:53sweet spot but it hits off the
00:54:55side of his foot.
00:54:56Now watch Pat's reaction.
00:54:57He knows right now just like a
00:54:59good golfer that wasn't a good
00:55:01putt Sam that is what an
00:55:05intimidating punt returner like
00:55:07Irving Friar will do and it's on
00:55:09the mind of the kicker comments
00:55:14moves across the right side he
00:55:15is inside the Cincinnati 27 yard
00:55:18line near the six Jerry for
00:55:19Yarsky with help from Jeff shoe
00:55:22an eight yard pickup for Collins
00:55:31and that stops the clock with two
00:55:32minutes to play in the first
00:55:34half Tony Collins seven carries
00:55:36for forty six yards the Patriots
00:55:39banging on the door.
00:55:40What's more injuries have three
00:55:42timeouts remaining in the big
00:55:43world.
00:55:46Now last Saturday the man to my
00:55:47right San Martin Leone was a part
00:55:49of NFL eighty five and Bob Costas
00:55:51will talk to NFL coaches who had
00:55:53recently been fired coming up at
00:55:54halftime Bob will talk to the
00:55:56coach who was most recently let
00:55:58go of St. Louis is Jimmy Hannifin
00:55:59all of that coming up next year
00:56:00on NFL eighty five through the
00:56:03left side goes Craig James he is
00:56:05brought to the turf by a Robert
00:56:07Jackson for the Bengals number
00:56:08thirty seven Robert Jackson
00:56:12clock running a minute forty four
00:56:13minute forty three to play in
00:56:14the first half here at Foxboro
00:56:16Massachusetts score Patriots 17
00:56:20to 6 for New England if you've
00:56:21just joined us they are in a
00:56:23must win mode it makes absolutely
00:56:25no difference what they
00:56:26accomplished in the first 15
00:56:28weeks of this season James tries
00:56:33to run in behind Holloway does
00:56:34not get much in essence Sam it
00:56:37is a one game season for Raymond
00:56:38Berry's ballclub without
00:56:40question today is going to be
00:56:41just like the tournament you
00:56:43lose one game you're out it's
00:56:44important for Cincinnati right
00:56:46now if New England scores this
00:56:48could be a blowout it could be
00:56:50too much for them to overcome
00:56:52Cincinnati because of the
00:56:53defense of the Patriots or what
00:56:56a difference a week makes last
00:56:57Sunday at RFK Stadium the
00:56:58Bengals jumped out to that big
00:57:00twenty four to three lead over
00:57:01the Redskins and then folded up
00:57:03their tent there goes James
00:57:05looked like a big hole on the
00:57:06right side but the rookie out of
00:57:08Tennessee Carl Zander filled it
00:57:10quickly and the Patriots want a
00:57:12timeout and that stops the clock
00:57:13with forty nine kicks remaining
00:57:19so Eason will trot over to the
00:57:21far sideline to talk things over
00:57:23with Raymond Berry ladies and
00:57:25gentlemen thank you to there's
00:57:29the situation forty nine seconds
00:57:30to play in the first half it's a
00:57:31seventeen to six Patriots ball
00:57:33game the Bengals with three
00:57:34timeouts the Patriots with two
00:57:36Eason now out of the shotgun to
00:57:38England employing three wide
00:57:40outs coming to the near side it
00:57:42is Collins and he cannot hold on
00:57:44to the football and that will
00:57:47stop the clock with forty four
00:57:48seconds to play and here comes
00:57:53Tony Franklin on fourth down and
00:57:56five Franklin his second
00:58:03consecutive year over the
00:58:06century mark Tony this year eight
00:58:14of eight from this range this
00:58:18will come from 30 yards away
00:58:20with a wind at his back and a
00:58:21pretty brisk wind at that he
00:58:23lets it go and he splits the
00:58:26yellow post clock is holding 40
00:58:30ticks to play and the Patriots
00:58:32are stretching it out with all
00:58:33of the score like your seats now
00:58:36for this holiday turnovers have
00:58:38certainly played a part in this
00:58:39ballgame right there Raymond
00:58:40Barry Sam a guy who simply won
00:58:42his when he played in Baltimore
00:58:43did not know the meaning of the
00:58:44word turnover in 13 illustrious
00:58:46years he had one count of one
00:58:49fumble and I used to tell our
00:58:50receivers at Cleveland that all
00:58:52the time that there's no reason
00:58:54to fumble because Raymond Barry
00:58:56played an entire career and just
00:58:58fumble the ball one time a great
00:59:01technician a tireless worker and
00:59:02he has taken those skills he
00:59:04employed as a player and put
00:59:06them into play as a head coach
00:59:07here in New England at the four
00:59:08yard line it is Mike Martin
00:59:11Bengals would like a big return
00:59:13they'll not get it to the twenty
00:59:14nine yard line where he is
00:59:15wrestled to the ground by Rod
00:59:17McSwain on the tackle Bengals
00:59:20offense they will put the ball
00:59:23Franklin with one hundred and
00:59:24ten points now as I said a
00:59:26moment ago fourth year in his
00:59:27career he has been over the
00:59:28century mark second consecutive
00:59:30season well they've had some
00:59:34good kickers here in New
00:59:35England John Smith prior to Tony
00:59:37Franklin here comes a sass and
00:59:41it comes a sass and the Bengals
00:59:42with a no huddle offense Patriots
00:59:46screaming trying to change the
00:59:47defensive coverage in a sass and
00:59:49sees it but the play already
00:59:51called it is James Brooks and
00:59:52look at a Patriots shut it down
00:59:55Steve Nelson with help from
00:59:59Garen Veras I'm surprised with
01:00:04three timeouts in decent field
01:00:07position that Cincinnati has
01:00:09chosen right now to go to the
01:00:11locker room with a 20 to 6 lead
01:00:1320 to 6 lead by the Patriots now
01:00:18the Bengals will elect to let
01:00:21the time expire that's it.
01:00:24We have completed the first 30
01:00:25minutes of play here in
01:00:26Foxborough Massachusetts and
01:00:28it's the Patriots over the
01:00:29Bengals 20 to 6 and Sam one
01:00:31thing we thought we would see
01:00:33early on a question I ask you
01:00:34during our open would Boomer
01:00:36Esiason and the Cincinnati
01:00:38Bengals be able to employ that
01:00:40vertical passing attack and
01:00:42they've done a good job the
01:00:43first half three things have
01:00:44happened Brooks fumbled cost him
01:00:47a field goal Boomer threw an
01:00:50interception cost him a
01:00:51touchdown and Pat McInerney had
01:00:53a very poor kick 13 yards and it
01:00:56cost him a field goal.
01:00:57So the takeaways have given the
01:00:59bats 13 points in the first half
01:01:02but a Cincinnati Bengals putting
01:01:03points on the board to the tune
01:01:04of twenty eight plus per game.
01:01:07But it has been a very very
01:01:09stingy New England Patriot
01:01:10defense.
01:01:11They came in the sixth best
01:01:13defense in the National Football
01:01:14League and oh boy they are
01:01:16living up to that number thus
01:01:18far here on this ballgame.
01:01:20We'll be back with more after
01:01:21these messages from your local
01:01:23station.
01:01:27Well the New England Patriots it
01:01:28is halftime here at Foxborough
01:01:29trying to ring in the holiday
01:01:31season in the right way and
01:01:33there's a man right there.
01:01:34Gimpy knee and all on crutches
01:01:36Steve Grogan earlier this week a
01:01:38quarterback of the New England
01:01:39Patriots received an honor that
01:01:41is just absolutely astounding a
01:01:43chance to perform with the
01:01:45Boston Pops Orchestra.
01:01:47And it was a day that I'm sure
01:01:49Steve Grogan will long remember.
01:01:50Take a look.
01:01:51This happened earlier this week
01:01:53with the Boston Pops was the
01:01:57night before Christmas when all
01:01:59through the house not a creature
01:02:01was stirring not even a mouse.
01:02:04The stockings were hung by the
01:02:06chimney with care in hopes that
01:02:08Johnny Nicholas soon would be
01:02:10there.
01:02:11The children were nestled all
01:02:13snug and I knew in a moment it
01:02:15must be more rapid than eagles
01:02:18as coursers they came.
01:02:20Whistle shouted and called him
01:02:22by name.
01:02:23Now Hannah now Morgan now
01:02:26Friar.
01:02:36Well I had no idea the reindeer
01:02:37names had been changed saying
01:02:39did you or were you apprised of
01:02:40that.
01:02:41Well one of those reindeers got
01:02:42in the end zone Morgan in the
01:02:44first quarter.
01:02:45So Steve was right.
01:02:46I'll tell you what he may not
01:02:47guide Santa's sleigh come to
01:02:49you tonight but he has certainly
01:02:50guided the New England Patriots
01:02:51sled thus far through the first
01:02:5330 minutes of play.
