00:00:38head coach of the giants now he eyes a keen opportunity a win that carries a bye bonus and
00:00:44home field advantage for the patriots in the playoffs dan reeves eyes flash outward fire but
00:00:50high disappointment even anger little doubt this will be his last game as giants coach an unexpected
00:00:57win by his crippled less talented team would be some solace it would be his career 150th win
00:01:03in three hours he'll begin the start of his next coaching life and we welcome you to giant stadium
00:01:10a stadium and field where this man played many big games and many winning efforts the question is will
00:01:17this giants team play hard for dan reeves today well it is the big question dick and how do you get this
00:01:22team to play hard you change things up and that's what the giant coaches have done on defense expect
00:01:27them to be aggressive blitz through but so try to make some big plays on offense put dave brown the
00:01:33shotgun for the first time this year give him a few more opportunities because otherwise you really have
00:01:38no chance of beating the new england patriots well and the giants have made no question statistically that
00:01:42they're the worst offensive team in the league against a new england patriots defense that improved
00:01:48after they were humiliated by denver ted johnson a middle linebacker doing the patriots told us
00:01:53yesterday say we were totally embarrassed five weeks ago bill parsen said we substituted some
00:01:57players we changed some people around well since then the last four games they've given up about 54
00:02:01yards on defense rushing ten and a half points per game now if that isn't turning your defense around
00:02:06dick i don't know what is well as you head to the playoffs the pressure on the quarterback and for
00:02:10the new england patriots it's the 24 year old arm of drew blitzow blitzow looks to the playoffs the
00:02:17patriots with a win today we'll get a week off next weekend
00:02:27welcome back to the meadowlands i'm jim gray well the giants offense is the worst in the nfl and
00:02:31today they've got even more problems their starting backfield is out of today's game
00:02:35rodney hampton and tyrone wheatley they're going to be replaced by gary downs and charles way i was
00:02:40speaking to one of the giants assistant coaches before the game he says well today we're going to have to
00:02:44play in our backfield with some non-scholarship athletes then he thought about it for a minute
00:02:48and he said well really we're going to be playing with a couple of walk-ons all of this is going to
00:02:52put a lot more pressure on dave brown who's already been struggling dick and all the cards seem to be
00:02:58against dan reeves giants especially on the offensive side of the ball if they're to win today the consensus
00:03:04is they'll do it defensively as they showed the dallas cowboys in a major win during the course of this
00:03:10six and nine year meanwhile bill parcells a win today would be the 11th for the patriots and match
00:03:17the franchise record for wins and before parcells came on the field with his team look at that face
00:03:24he told us this would be a tough game it appears he's fighting back uh tears phil sims well there's a
00:03:31like we said dick he he hates everything this game is standing for today coming back in here
00:03:36playing against his old team his old bosses but hey don't forget he wants to win this game for what
00:03:40it means for his team daluiso to a former new york giant dave mega who burrows to the 27 yard line
00:03:48and we're underway the patriots bring out their offensive unit and true blood so 25 touchdown passes
00:03:55this year the second rated scoring offense in the league with armstrong going to his fifth pro bowl
00:04:02roberts the former giant wolva rucci and lane the offensive line bledsoe with curtis martin martin
00:04:08again the leading rusher he goes to honolulu keith byers the veteran sean jefferson with the brilliant
00:04:13rookie terry glenn he's just one catch away from the nfl record for rookies and ben coach the tight end
00:04:19bledsoe comes out throwing underneath to martin and martin tackled at the 32 yard line after a gain of five
00:04:31felipe sparks at the left corner made the stop and here are the giants the men in blue have strahan harris
00:04:38agnew for keith hamilton who won't play today and bradsky at the other end armstead has had an outstanding
00:04:43year widmer and miller the other backers sparks and sehorn another player jason sehorn leads the team
00:04:50in interception four and force fumbles five with campbell and wooten at safety
00:04:58second down six screen slipping and sliding is martin and he's tackled for a loss at the 28 yard line by
00:05:07former patriot ray agnew a loss of three you know if i'm the patriots i would do what they just did
00:05:13i come out here and i get physical with the giants i know that just your last game for the giants and
00:05:17not for the patriots stick it to them really hit them hard and and say hey look it we're gonna make
00:05:21it's gonna be a long day for you yeah make it a fight and see if the giants are willing to fight the
00:05:25whole the whole game today but the giants defense they played pretty well this year they've got a
00:05:30blitz take some chances make some turnovers and they've got to take away number 88 terry glenn third down
00:05:37nine dave negat in the backfield
00:05:42underneath complete but for short yardage that goes to terry glenn and ties the nfl rookie record
00:05:48his 83rd catch but far short of a first down three and out for the patriots you know the one thing about
00:05:54a team like this for you giants you're a much better football team new england the giants don't let them
00:05:58have any confidence really they should should have stuck it to a right at the beginning well there you see
00:06:02glenn tying 49er rookie earl cooper all those other names were running backs and glenn establishing
00:06:09himself as really a star player for the patriots this year and missed the first game of the season
00:06:14with an injury tom tupa the former ohio state quarterback is the putter arthur marshall at the
00:06:20other end almost with that one and marshall grabbed by an arm now grabbed by the rest of his anatomy and down
00:06:30he goes inside the 35 yard line hey mario greer made the tackle and on come the giants dave brown
00:06:41who's heard plenty of boos even when he's done some things well they will come up here bishop smith brian
00:06:48williams many feel he should have been a pro bowl player ron stone and scott gragg the offensive line
00:06:53it's been porous they've sacked brown and his uh other quarterbacks 54 times at league high downs and
00:07:01way are the running backs little known little opportunity as all the top players uh hampton
00:07:11as a base to gary downs and he gets short yardage as most of them have the 35 yard line keith elias is
00:07:17injured won't play rodney hampton the leading rusher he won't play tyrone wheatley won't play today
00:07:23collins wheeler sangapulitelli and willie mcginnis mcginnis with nine and a half sacks to lead the team
00:07:28sob johnson and collins johnson the leading tackler law and smith young and old at the corners and
00:07:36lawyer malloy from washington and willie clay the safety is clay four interceptions to lead the pats
00:07:42and it's downs up the middle third round pick a couple of years ago out of north carolina state
00:07:55well if i'm the new england patriots and what i do and the giants have run two plays which i
00:07:58thought we were going to do but if i'm if i'm new england what i want to do is i want to blitz i want
00:08:02to put as much pressure on dave brown and pass the situation as you can and make him throw the ball away
00:08:06why i i wouldn't do that if i was new england's defense paul because i wouldn't want dave brown
00:08:11in this giant offense to get fortunate or lucky and have that one big play that leads to a score
00:08:16make them drive down the field they've struggled with that all year long third down a short three
00:08:21the giants worst in the league third down efficiency under 40 percent a lot of three and
00:08:26outs for the men in blue the throw complete they get a first down this time to chris calloway
00:08:31calloway the leading receiver that's his 52nd catch well that's that's dave brown's go-to guy chris
00:08:38calloway but the one thing i've noticed already in this game in every aspect a lot of players slipping
00:08:44and the field looks like it could be freezing but chris calloway pretty physical receiver pushes off on
00:08:50ty law gives a little opening for dave brown to throw the football and he had all the time to throw
00:08:54the ball he didn't blitz him either first down just inside the 50.
00:08:59and the give to downs trying to get outside and downs 45 and falls down he slips at the 41 yard
00:09:08line after a nine yard run well that's what you're talking about phil i get to the outside in this part
00:09:13of the field has been shade the whole time before the game didn't get much sun and when you see downs
00:09:18get out to the outside and he gets himself into the shaded area that's just ice out there and when
00:09:24he makes a turn to go up watch his feet there they go at a blocker he had another 5 10 yards
00:09:29ahead of him well you got to say this gary downs now coming in the backfield basically off the street
00:09:34but he brings a little more speed to the halfback position and this could be a a little close for the
00:09:39giants he gets a first down on that tryoff tackle ted johnson leads the defensive charge
00:09:45and gary downs drafted by the giants in the third round two years ago then he went to denver and then
00:09:52here this year cut by the broncos coaching junior high school a personal trainer re-signed when the
00:09:59giants needed help with the injuries and last week finally an opportunity to play against the saints and
00:10:04rush for 42 yards 19 yards in this first possession brown on first down
00:10:11right on and it's thomas lewis with a catch inside the five yard line
00:10:20i'm just going to say it one more time they rush four guys the only game they give them time to
00:10:23throw the football and and you know this is a game i said before when we did this about this team here
00:10:28you look at lewis down the sideline here's a team that they're not just going to roll over and die the
00:10:33giants they got one game to play they want to show these people they still can play football well
00:10:37already paul you can see physically there's a giants matchup pretty well against this new england
00:10:41defense and thomas lewis on otis smith it's one of the few places i think on offense where they
00:10:47really have a mismatch they took advantage of it right there first and goal four yard line downs
00:10:52gets a couple and as he smacked and i think that was one of those periods to play before dick where
00:10:59the giant fans they like dave brown on that throw willie mcginnis and ted johnson there's johnson
00:11:05who leads the patriots in tackles made that last hit what was the story the brown said against
00:11:10the dallas he throws the touchdown pass came off the field and the fan said hey nice going dave
00:11:15he says great game today dave great game but we still hate you though we still hate you okay
00:11:22you know you've heard it oh yeah you got to deal with that no matter where you play quarterback
00:11:26second and goal downs up the middle is close right at the goal line and stopped at about the
00:11:32half yard line you know dick when you go back to brown when you said to him he's such a nice guy
00:11:36and dave brown sitting in one of the worst things that's ever could ever happen to any player not
00:11:41just a quarterback to any player he got hurt and he was on the ground and the fans here cheered and
00:11:46that's wrong i mean for any player i don't care how much you dislike him when a player is hurt don't ever
00:11:52cheer it yeah and it's it's a it really paul it's a common occurrence around the league i've heard it
00:11:56uh it opposes stadiums you hear it everywhere and it's not right but but it happens it comes with the
00:12:02salary third and goal now he's diving but he has stopped cold he might have lost a foot on that try
00:12:12cried the barrel over the top and the patriots there fourth and goal and when your season and
00:12:17your coaching career in a city is over you go for it no you send on the field goal well he's coaching the
00:12:24way you know his case and i was getting ready to say this is no decision he's going to go for the
00:12:28touchdown here there's no question and then i see the field goal team come running out giants have called
00:12:35timeout midpoint opening quarter
00:12:42spectacular december day in the big apple watch ted johnson the best player in the new england's
00:12:48defense come over the top and makes a great hit in midair against gary downs and stopped him from
00:12:54scoring a touchdown helmet to helmet we understand that dan reese has been talked out of the field
00:12:59goal after the timeout the players and coaches said let's go for the six no matter how it turns out
00:13:06this is the right decision you need points today to beat this new england team three points is no good
00:13:11they need seven only 11 touchdowns in the red zone by far the worst record in the league fourth and goal
00:13:17one yard line downs again they didn't make it so they ran it up the middle again behind
00:13:24brad williams there one consistent blocker and ted johnson almost single-handedly spoiled the fun
00:13:31new england plays run all the way they have people shooting at gaps there is no chance for this play to work
00:13:38more defenders at the line of scrimmage mike jones comes three number 96 comes through free unblocked big
00:13:45stop for new england's defense
00:13:53four downs from the four four tries by gary downs and it winds up on the one yard line as the patriots
00:14:00hold and we read the lips of dan reeves he said why didn't he quarterback sneak it and after this play
00:14:06we'll take a look and have uh bill examine whether that would have worked bledsoe throws out of his own
00:14:11line zone and mario greer is out of bounds at about the eight yard line let's go back to that fourth
00:14:17down try well watch the center and the left guard if dave brown is on a quarterback sneak i can't tell
00:14:22it's traded for you because it's the weather is not making it work but look at the hole in the middle
00:14:27dave brown could have snuck in and clearly we read dan reeves his lips he says why didn't they run the
00:14:35quarterback's knee so the play it called was checked with me and he cut whatever play he called he called
00:14:39it the line of scrimmage is that the case that's that must be what it was he changed it to a running
00:14:43player it was either or and the wrong play was called second down and two
00:14:50curtis martin to the 10 11 close to a first down we'll go back to that play it's symptomatic of the
00:14:56entire season for the giants and maybe the dan reeves a four-year era that is that there just
00:15:04seems to be coaches not understanding to the players not understanding coaches reeves relationship
00:15:10with the front office not and jason sehorn said it best it's it's a non-functional family it's like
00:15:16we're going through a divorce every week does anyone talk to each other yeah it's communication dick you
00:15:20know when you have lines that are gray nobody knows what's right and wrong is sometimes and that's kind
00:15:24of the problem that's been with the giants to clear clear defined roles makes it easy for everybody
00:15:31and sometimes that's been been the problem with the giants what a nice play by corey miller the
00:15:35linebacker the outside linebacker he just blitzed down the line of scrimmage and makes this play
00:15:39i mean this this is all corey miller he comes down you're going to see him on the left-hand side
00:15:43of your screen number 57 look at this boom boom good hit on curtis martin who comes into the game with
00:15:501143 yards rushing and loses a couple on that play meanwhile blensoe is four for four but for only 12 yards
00:15:58advance
00:16:03and he's met jesse armstead who leads the giants in tackles with 109. the thing about that fourth down
00:16:11call let's just going back to that for a second hey they didn't make it but now you got new england
00:16:16and backed up stop them you get another scoring opportunity right away because you're going to
00:16:20get the ball in such good field position one other thing about the call though and dick you said it
00:16:25right at the beginning if it were a regular season football game in the first game of the year they
00:16:29would have kicked the points and put them on the board but three points is not going to beat this team
00:16:34third and eight five minutes remaining in the first quarter scoreless and blensoe under some pressure
00:16:42underneath but that won't be good enough for a first down jason sehorn who has emerged as a top
00:16:49quality corner 6 2 210 speed great jumping ability only his third year out of southern california look
00:16:56at the defensive line just three of them rushing the passer the giants uses against the cowboys
00:17:02anytime it's over seven yards drop eight people back make the quarterback throw short tackle the
00:17:08receiver before he gets the first down it worked right there throw it to megan that's what he did
00:17:12with the giants they when he's with the giants they threw to megan they do the same thing in new england
00:17:16tupo had trouble with his first punt as you saw arthur marshall back at the 38
00:17:27and he gets it away a good kick hangs it out for marshall fair catch at the 41. so the giants have it
00:17:32hit back at the 41 on a 41 yard punt by tom tupo go parcel starts off angry first quarter no score

00:19:05they're so hard that it's very difficult to kick it's like kicking ice or a brick so we're going to see a lot
00:19:10of short punts and the kickers are going to have an awful lot of trouble today on the field goals
00:19:13they've got to gut it up and kick the ball i mean i 11 years i did they hit it

00:19:23the downs caught in the backfield for a loss ted johnson another play for the second year backer
00:19:29from colorado who had a big outing against dallas a week ago with 11 tackles well ted johnson
00:19:35every time you talk to the opposing team they say this is the patriots best defensive player
00:19:40and i had him described yesterday by one of the giant players i think well he says he is zach thomas
00:19:45but he's a lot bigger he's got speed he reacts well he sees situations and that's why he makes a lot of
00:19:51tackles six three and 240 from those great linebackers with the buffalo brown sacked on the blitz by otis
00:20:00smith who comes in from the corner the 55th sack given up by the giants this year they lead the league
00:20:07and for brown himself that is his 48th yeah brown gets sacked but i want to tell you something chris
00:20:13you said about so you said about yesterday chris callaway this guy didn't even try to get open
00:20:17look at number 45 otis smith blitzing if you're playing the patriots or bill parcells
00:20:22coach team in a passing situation if you run play action the receiver sees it dave brown did not see it
00:20:29as a quarterback you've got to be alert to corner blitz from your back side they do it every single
00:20:35game thomas lewis said i'm open but brown hadn't looked in that direction and now on third and long
00:20:42the throw almost picked off
00:20:44as darting in front of lawrence dossi
00:20:47was uh jerome henderson well one of the things on a day like today we talked about how hard the ball is
00:20:52for the kickers it's the same way for the receivers look at this dossi you've got to grab the ball and not look
00:20:57to go make sure you make the catch first and then you turn the run well he looks at his gloves and that is
00:21:03that has been a problem for the giants all year long drop passes we figured it out 15 percent of their
00:21:10catchable passes have been dropped this year that is amazing left footer mike horan sends one high to make

00:23:23but until you you're not going to get the giants out of this eight nine man line up there phil unless
00:23:28you throw a couple of deep balls he's got to go down which he hasn't done well they will paul
00:23:32i think if they're given the opportunity but it's hard to be brave when you're inside your own five
00:23:36yard line and you know you got to look at the big picture the whole game not take a chance here and
00:23:41have a backfire jefferson left and glenn to the right it's a draw martin ducks away from one man

00:23:56wants a holy penalty on bruce armstrong number 78 for new england and he did he 77 just pulled him to

00:24:06here this says a lot of good things about the giants you know they're into this game it's
00:24:10i think so far physically they're kind of controlling the pace and the players you can see their emotions
00:24:15they're not going to take any anything from the patients even though they're going to the playoffs
00:24:20they don't care what did jesse armstead say yesterday yeah oh yeah i'm giving 100 he said
00:24:24no this is my last day to fight because if i go back to miami and get in a fight i get thrown in jail
00:24:29here i'm fighting i'm going to fight every single play and i'll guarantee you jesse armstead does
00:24:34it's been a giver to this giant defense all year armstead third and nine in the end zone and just did
00:24:43get it away blitz oh no flag there it goes that's a safety for the giants intentionally grounding the
00:24:50ball to nothing new york good call by the official there was no receiver there michael strahan the giants
00:24:58had a blitz on they pressured him it was a screen play the receiver was still in the pack
00:25:13i'll tell you one thing this game is not going the way the big tuna wanted it to go
00:25:17bill for ourselves is totally upset with what's going on he's upset with the call
00:25:22here comes phil to tell us straighter it's too it's too cold for it to work but look to the top of
00:25:26your screen you can see the blitzers coming there's not enough linemen for the patriots to pick up the
00:25:32blitz and michael strahan number 92 comes through free because of the blitz look at the guard the
00:25:41right tackle max lane moves out to pick up a back and and leaves the linemen to come in from the inside
00:25:47the closest distance to blenzo and that's a huge mistake by an offensive lineman and blenzo just
00:25:52throwing where he thought maggot would be for the screen but he wasn't close enough in the referee's
00:25:57side to get the incomplete pass it was a good decision by drew blitz so but uh the referee made
00:26:02a i'll tell you what most of the time they don't make that call but that was the proper call no
00:26:07receiver in the area so you get two points and the ball on the free kick as tupa will put it from
00:26:12the patriots 20 yard line but one thing about blood so he was backing up dick and he knew that he was at
00:26:17the end line if he goes over the end line it is a safety anyway so he just unloaded the ball he did the
00:26:22that's a smart thing that's right there were three options to get a safety be tackled in there out of
00:26:28the end zone or do what he did throw it away well the other problem is if you stand up there and get
00:26:32tackled and you fumble the ball and they get the ball to touchdowns so he got a lot of options and I
00:26:37think he chose the right one so an interesting start to this game with everything counting for the
00:26:43Patriots and the Giants playing in their final game of the season for a coach in his final game
00:26:50tupa another soft kick that frozen ball and they fight over who's going to return it
00:26:54finally goes to brian kozlowski he doesn't get a chance
00:26:57and look at him run through the white shirts all the way to the 44 yard line that's where he called
00:27:03following the wedge end of the first quarter at giant stadium two nothing g-mins

00:28:18and the giants with a two nothing lead as they open the second quarter here in chile
00:28:24giant stadium brown guns an incomplete through the hands of charles away
00:28:30and almost flopped to the patriots you know that's one of the things about brown when he sets up
00:28:35and he's not in control of the ball he's he throws the ball more times than we see behind the receiver
00:28:41than in the receiver's hands are in front of him well paul the number one thing is to see in this
00:28:45league as a quarterback of course find the guy that's open but you got to be an accurate thrower if
00:28:50the ball gets away from you it's always problems and it does get away from dave and that has been a big
00:28:55problem accuracy it is better this year though i think it has been in the past
00:29:00way and he is inside the 30 yard line near the 28 a gain of four
00:29:08well how bad is the new york giant offense even dan reeves has had to admit 30 isn't good that's last
00:29:15and they're last in yards passing yards third down efficiency sacks allowed next to last rushing
00:29:21average two from last and scoring and how many games have they won six so what does that they have
00:29:28nobody on the pro bowl team i'm gonna tell you dan reeves has done a great job coaching his football

00:43:21the defensive play well it's a good throw and almost a good catch by the giants but lawyer malloy and willie
00:43:28play play two safeties that just gravitate towards the ball and big hitters break it up for the new
00:43:34england patriots it'll be a 30-yard attempt by daluiso who has made 12 in a row and he's not missed
00:43:41in his last 19 tries inside the 40. and he makes it 20 in a row with 6 27 showing in the first half

00:46:40and looking at the ball instead of megan which he has to look at megan where he is he would have been
00:46:44able to pick that ball up and go for a touchdown third and long three down linemen rushing again nobody
00:46:49has opened down the field and the giant secondary tackles very well when you throw it short
00:46:56well you look at that sour face of bill parcells he won't need any writers for his halftime delivery

01:00:32it would be the defense that would carry them and the defense has played very well yeah it's played
