00:00:00On a chilly 41-degree day in Foxborough, we're getting ready for the New York Jets and the
00:00:22New England Patriots. Drew Bledsoe having a career season, looking to lead his Patriots
00:00:28to a record of 10-4 to clinch a playoff berth and cement virtually every tie-breaking scenario.
00:00:35For the Jets, a far different story, with one-time Boston College star Glenn Foley making his
00:00:40first NFL start, hoping to salvage something out of a disastrous season.
00:00:46Hi, everybody. I'm Marv Alvin, along with Sam Weish. And Sam, this a matchup of two teams
00:00:51that are dramatically headed in opposite directions. The Patriots, sparked by Drew Bledsoe, have
00:00:57won six of the last seven, nine of their last 11 games. And early in the year, Bill Parcells
00:01:02said this was a critical year for his streaky quarterback. Well, he's certainly become more
00:01:06consistent. Four of his last six games he's completed, 70% of his passes are better. Nine
00:01:11interceptions this year. Just two years ago, he threw 27 interceptions. And he's coming
00:01:15off a game against San Diego where his quarterback rating was 136. That'll lead the league every
00:01:19year. Those are playoff numbers. And for the Jets in a week that saw several of their players
00:01:24stating publicly that they felt they quit in the game against Houston last week, enter
00:01:29Glenn Foley, the product of Boston College, making his first NFL start.
00:01:34I asked Drew Bledsoe what advice he'd give Foley, and he said, just be patient. Not everything's
00:01:38going to go right today. The good news to Foley is that he doesn't have to look over his shoulder
00:01:41if something doesn't go right, because he's the quarterback for the next three weeks, according
00:01:44to Rich Cotite. And we'll find out today if patience is the answer for the New York Jets.
00:01:48As for the weather here in Foxborough, no rain, no snow in the forecast. The field not
00:01:54in wonderful shape, although cosmetic repairs are being attempted. Let's get to Greg Gumbel
00:01:59to New York.
00:02:06All right, gentlemen. Welcome, everyone. Let's get you caught up on the scores of the early
00:02:09games that will begin in Green Bay, where the Packers are beating the Denver Broncos and
00:02:14beating them decisively, 41-6. Brett Favre reading the blitz here, throws to Antonio Freeman,
00:02:19shakes loose from Torrey James, races for a 51-yard touchdown. The second of his three
00:02:24touchdowns on the day, John Elway did not play in this game. The Green Bay Packers claim
00:02:28the NFC Central Division Championship. They're leading it 41-6. In Pittsburgh, the Steelers are
00:02:34the champions of the AFC Central. They have beaten the San Diego Chargers today, 16-3. In Miami,
00:02:40the New York Giants knocked off the Dolphins today, 17-7. The final score, Dave Brown with
00:02:46a touchdown pass to Howard Cross. Rodney Hampton, five yards for a TD for New York. In Houston,
00:02:51the Oilers hosting the Jaguars, falling to Jacksonville, 23-17. Eddie George, 141 yards
00:02:56rushing last week against the Jets. Only 15 in the first half today, but it was a big day
00:03:00for Nate Tron. Means, after a Steve McNair interception, Means finds a hole, barrels in
00:03:04from the five. His second touchdown of the day, Jacksonville goes to 7-7 with the victory.
00:03:09In Tampa, the Bucs knock off the Washington Redskins, 24-10. In Chicago, the Bears trouncing
00:03:16the St. Louis Rams, 35-9. In Cincinnati, a last-second try at the goal line by the Ravens
00:03:23fails, and the Bengals win 21-14. And Atlanta, all over the New Orleans Saints, 31-15. We'll
00:03:29send you to the kickoffs in Foxborough and Seattle right after this.
00:03:32Although the New England area is wild about its Patriots, as always, Bill Parcells, very
00:03:45cautious in his excitement, but he is very pleased. And you get the idea, very happy about the
00:03:52way things are going from the coaching point of view. Not the case earlier in the season.
00:03:58Patriots won the toss and will receive the kickoff specialist for the Jets, Don Silvestri,
00:04:04kicking away to the combination of Troy Brown and Dave Meggett. The Jets at 1-12. Breaking
00:04:14it down, they've lost four straight 12 of their last 13. And this is Brown, up across the 20.
00:04:27Ran it to his own man, and has taken down short of the 25-yard line. A 15-yard return. Bobby
00:04:35Hamilton involved on the stop. And here's Drew Blensoe and the Patriot offense stepping on.
00:04:41And a look at that offensive line. Todd Rucci remains in at right guard, although we may
00:04:48see Bob Cratcher later on coming back from the knee problem and pneumonia.
00:04:54Curtis Martin, Sam Gash on the running backs. The receivers Jefferson, Glenn, and Coach Glenn
00:05:02with 67 receptions. Now a change as Meggett opens up in the backfield. And the Patriots
00:05:09start out from their 24-yard line. And Blensoe ripping it and completing Sean Jefferson for
00:05:17the first down. Victor Green, who had 17 total tackles last week against Houston, made the
00:05:24stop. But this one is good for 15. And they lined up Keith Byers wide to the right. Straight
00:05:29drop back pass. And inside, you'll see right here, Sean Jefferson. Now he's not the wide receiver.
00:05:34The widest receiver is actually a running back in Keith Byers. That means that the Jets took
00:05:38their safety out. Victor Green, a little bit of a confusion inside. Wide open on the zone.
00:05:43And a first down of the 39-yard line. And again, Blensoe tossing and looping it downfield for
00:05:50Jefferson. So Blensoe opens up two for two with Jefferson. This one, a 30-yard pickup. The tackle
00:05:58made by the right corner, Marcus Coleman. One-on-one coverage right down the middle. There's no free
00:06:05safety in the middle right here. Just out jumping at the very end. Sean Jefferson, first two plays
00:06:11of the game, two completions. That's the start of a big day. And we know one thing. Drew Bledsoe
00:06:16will throw the ball to every receiver he's got out there today. He's completed touchdowns
00:06:20to eight different receivers this season. And now Sam Curtis Martin and Sam Gash do check
00:06:27in. And apparently an official timeout. The Patriots were at the line. And we'll resume
00:06:39in just a moment. A minute and a half gone by in this first quarter. And a quick start
00:06:44by Blensoe in contrast to what took place in that earlier meeting against the Jets at
00:06:50the Meadowlands four weeks ago where he had problems. And the Jets jumped in front 21-0.
00:06:55And now here's Blensoe again throwing the deep ball. And it's broken up. Marcus Coleman
00:07:00the right corner with the coverage on the rookie from Ohio State, Terry Glenn. Terry Glenn has
00:07:06had it one of those special years for a rookie. Marcus Coleman beat badly last week for a touchdown.
00:07:11They're going to go after him on a little token fake going straight down the field.
00:07:15And there is Marcus Coleman, the rookie from Texas Tech, as we check out the Jets'
00:07:21defensive alignment. Up front, Hamilton, Washington, Brock, and Douglas. Matt Brock,
00:07:28one of several Jets, to speak out about what he felt was a quitting effort last week
00:07:33against Houston. Now the inside handoff to Curtis Martin.
00:07:37Curtis Martin having another terrific season. Number five and rushing in the AFC. Headed for
00:07:47the 1,000-yard mark once again. Marvin Jones, the middle linebacker, made the stop. And it's
00:07:54a pickup of two. A third down and eight. Curtis leading the AFC in total touchdowns with 16.
00:08:02958 yards coming in.
00:08:09Bledsoe getting the time, going sideline, and it is incomplete. Intended for Vincent Brisby, who is back
00:08:16in the lineup on his second game. He faced Denver three weeks ago. He's been bothered
00:08:22by a pulled hamstring.
00:08:24See, Brisby's going up against Aaron Glenn. He just got a break to the outside. He, rather than a square out
00:08:30move, he turns in and then slides back to the outside. The Jets came that time with only three
00:08:34rushers, and they dropped everybody back in protection.
00:08:37And what happens when you get everybody back like that, if you don't get underneath it, you're going to have those
00:08:43throws to the out. But the ball was just thrown a little too wide. So on a fourth and eight, this is a 48-yard
00:08:49field goal attempt by Adam Vinatieri, who after the slow start has really come on. And now instead, a change
00:08:56is looking to surprise the Jets, and he was able to punt it inside the five-yard line.
00:09:04Well, Bill Parcells passing up on the long attempt of 48-yard field goal. Instead, Vinatieri with a
00:09:13pooch punt for 27 yards, and it means the Jets will have to start out from inside their
00:09:20three-yard line. We'll be back after these words.
00:09:28A look at Alumni Stadium on the campus of Boston College up in Chestnut Hill, the former home of Glenn
00:09:34Foley, who is the starting quarterback for the New York Jets. And Foley, on the first play, gives it to
00:09:40Adrian Murrell. As we check out the Jet front line, Jumbo Elliott, who has matched up with Willie
00:09:48McGinnis. Bill Parcells feels that is the key, as far as they're concerned, defensively. Foley, the quarterback.
00:09:56Murrell having a terrific season with Anderson at the running back positions. Keyshawn Johnson,
00:10:01Wayne Trevett, and Kyle Brady are the receivers. Jeff Graham has had an outstanding season,
00:10:06sitting out with Turf Toe, and Murrell is stuck. Adrian Murrell tried the right side and was shut down.
00:10:17A look at the New England front four. Farrakh Cullen starting once again, instead of Mike Jones at
00:10:24left defensive end, Willie McGinnis coming off a terrific game last week against San Diego. In fact,
00:10:30voted the AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Sav Johnson and Collins are the linebackers. Collins for the
00:10:36injured Monte Brown. Otis Smith, the one chain, starting at right corner for Ricky Reynolds, has been
00:10:42hobbled with an ankle problem. You see the flags come flying. The referee today is Tom White.
00:10:49And here's the call.
00:10:59Well, first they will discuss it. Absolutely. You've got to discuss every call.
00:11:03But really what happened was that Mike Jones moved, David Williams reacted. Now they're going
00:11:07to call it as a defensive or an offensive foul because both people were moving. Jones was in
00:11:12the neutral zone when the movement took place on offense. Neutral zone infraction. Number 96.
00:11:22Defense. Five-yard penalty. Third down.
00:11:26Well, the call against Mike Jones. You see Mike Jones right here. He's going to move early.
00:11:33Now, if he causes movement because the left guard, Galbraith, thought he would be rushing that
00:11:40quarterback, then that's allowed in this call against the defense. It is a third and two.
00:11:44The Jets at their 11-yard line. Pinned back on that surprise punt by Vinatieri. And Foley
00:11:51able to complete his first pass to Webster Slaughter. And he has a first down. Scooter
00:11:57McGruder on the stop. It is a pickup of seven. Webster Slaughter, who returned last week after
00:12:04missing six games with a pulled hamstring, able to make the catch. Len Foley, born in
00:12:10Woburn, Massachusetts. Grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. At Boston College, known as a big
00:12:18game player. Fans in this area remember him leading B.C. to that stunning upset over Notre Dame.
00:12:24And Foley off the roll. And decides to throw it away. As we mentioned earlier, this is his
00:12:35first NFL start. Now, he played against the Patriots a year ago in the Meadowlands. And
00:12:39of course, he finished the game last week. But this is the first time he's started a football
00:12:45game in the NFL. And I know what that feels like. Everything's happening faster than it
00:12:49should. Everything's a little bit gray. Nothing is absolutely clear. And on top of that, we're
00:12:53playing at 4 o'clock. In about 30 minutes, it's going to be dark out here. It's going
00:12:56to be like a preseason night game. And Glenn Foley does not have pleasant memories from
00:13:00that last appearance last year against the Patriots suffering the dislocated shoulder.
00:13:06The throwing shoulder was injured as he was hit by Aaron Jones. Here's Morrell. Trying to
00:13:13get going and cannot. Pio Sangapulotelli on the stop of Adrian Morrell. Bill Parcells telling
00:13:21us, and this is that time of the year where they vote for the Pro Bowl, that one of his
00:13:25votes went in the direction of Adrian Morrell. He has great respect for this running back.
00:13:31Adrian Morrell, Tony Martin, and Terrell Davis were the three people he said belong in that
00:13:35Pro Bowl. Of course, facing one of them right here today. This wasn't any kind of a compliment
00:13:39because of the game. He really believes that. In effect, he wouldn't do something that you
00:13:44would have said. You did. To try to soften up the play. I'll explain that. Yes. A third down
00:13:49and nine, and it is picked off. Fully intercepted by Jerome Henderson.
00:13:59The pass intended for the rookie, Alex Van Dyke.
00:14:09Van Dyke, you see right here. Henderson is in for the... He's a nickel back. Another
00:14:14one. In other words, he only plays in third down passing situations. He just anticipates
00:14:18the move. Anytime you make a break that far in front of a defender, and Van Dyke was a
00:14:22good six yards in front of the defender, he's got plenty of time to break on the ball.
00:14:26Sharply thrown. Really in pretty good position for the catch, but just good anticipation by
00:14:30Jerome Henderson. It is another jet turnover. It gives the Patriots the ball first and 10 at
00:14:36the 26-yard line, and Curtis Martin with just a short pickup.
00:14:40You know, we're talking about the voting, which is Monday or next week for the Pro Bowl. There are a lot of teams
00:14:47around the league that if they've got a player they think is going to be close to making the
00:14:50Pro Bowl, will vote for a player that maybe has no chance. Therefore, the percentage-wise gives their
00:14:56guy a better chance to get into the Pro Bowl. I personally never did that. I can understand that, Sam,
00:15:00knowing you the way I do. And I'll never do it again, either. Jerome Henderson with a second
00:15:06interception of the season to set up this Patriot drive, a second down and seven.
00:15:12Let's all have the time, and over to complete to Martin, and he has a first down inside the 15.
00:15:23Marvin Washington on the tackle.
00:15:25It's a little layoff pass. Straight drop back. Let everybody come up the field a little bit. As you can see right here that
00:15:31that Martin is going to step up inside the tackle's block. They try to cut the tackle, lay it out there quick.
00:15:37Inside receivers, Dave Wallabuzin, or linemen, are out there trying to throw a block down the field after the catch.
00:15:43They can go downfield after the throw, but not before.
00:15:45Curtis Martin had a big day receiving against the Jets four weeks ago, and now it's to the ground.
00:15:52And Martin, breaking tackles, gets inside the 10. Taken down by Victor Green.
00:15:59The New England Patriots, with a chance for a first-round buy and a second-round home playoff game,
00:16:06if things continue along the same kind of trail that they have been carving for themselves.
00:16:13You saw right there that just a clean miss by Matt Brock, who had some rather outspoken things to say last week about players.
00:16:20That was a good effort, but he missed the time.
00:16:22And a second down and four.
00:16:26Acceleration by Gash. A rare carry by Sam Gash.
00:16:31Several Jets trying to knock the ball loose.
00:16:33Sam Gash has had an excellent season.
00:16:37As a blocker and as a pass catcher, 31 receptions for Gash in his fifth year out of Penn State.
00:16:44That's all it takes to play fullback for Bill Parcells.
00:16:46If you can catch and you can block, you can play fullback for him.
00:16:49That would leave you out, Mark.
00:16:51Yes, in many ways.
00:16:52In both categories.
00:16:54A third and three.
00:16:56Getting back to the subject of Matt Brock, one of several players who said that there were Jets
00:17:02who just stopped playing last week in the game against Houston.
00:17:07A big hole for Dave Beckett, but he is short of the first down.
00:17:12We touched on this on the pregame show earlier.
00:17:15How do you react to that, Sam?
00:17:17And how do you react to a player coming out and making that statement?
00:17:20Well, there could be a lot of things.
00:17:21Frustration is absolutely there.
00:17:23He may be observing something in that locker room and in meetings and on the practice field.
00:17:28Not behind the coach's back, but away from the coach.
00:17:31He's really closer to the way the players feel than the coach is in many ways.
00:17:35It's disturbing to hear a player say that because he has no reason to say it unless he really believes it.
00:17:40This is a fourth and about a yard and a half.
00:17:44And you can hear the crowd reaction.
00:17:45Obviously, they want the Patriots to go for the six.
00:17:51They are.
00:17:52Well, they're measuring it.
00:17:54Bill Parcells certainly is not afraid to go for the first down on a fourth down situation.
00:18:00In a fourth down situation, especially down here close.
00:18:03My guess is he'll go for it.
00:18:05Since I saw him wave his card, I'd make that wild guess.
00:18:09One of the key factors in that earlier game with the Jets, a favorable spot that went the Patriot way.
00:18:21Yeah, but you know, and talking to some of the Patriots, they kind of acknowledge this.
00:18:25If you lose the game, you bring that up as being something that really costs you.
00:18:29If you win the game, it's just part of the evening out process.
00:18:32You win a few, you lose a few.
00:18:34Although the Jets do not complain about that.
00:18:35I didn't hear him mention it in our interview.
00:18:37You'd have the feeling if you follow the Jets that somehow it would have slipped by anyway.
00:18:42That's right.
00:18:43The way this year has gone.
00:18:44A fourth down play, and Martin slices his way for the first down.
00:18:50It sets up a first and goal.
00:18:53Marvin Jones on the tackle.
00:18:57And they went right off the left side, right at Bruce Armstrong.
00:19:01Their strength in the offensive line, or one of their strengths in the offensive line.
00:19:04And of course, you see Martin right there.
00:19:07He really has lost his footing.
00:19:09This is not going to be an easy day from the standpoint of cutbacks, or when you've got to make a sharp break.
00:19:14There has been, there was a snowstorm yesterday.
00:19:17Water on the field, and the snow's melted.
00:19:19It's soft.
00:19:20First and goal from the three.
00:19:22The Patriots have been excellent inside the red zone.
00:19:26Play action.
00:19:27Let's go throwing.
00:19:29Touchdown.
00:19:30The diving catch by Ben Coates.
00:19:33Ben Coates with his eighth touchdown reception of the season for Drew Bledsoe, his 25th touchdown pass.
00:19:53In total, that is the 21st touchdown that Ben Coates has got in his career from Drew Bledsoe, and used to be that's the only guy he looked for.
00:20:02He's spreading it around now, though.
00:20:04And here's Adam Vinatieri with Tom Cupert to put it down.
00:20:125.43 remaining.
00:20:14In the first quarter, it's the Patriots' seven.
00:20:17The Jets' nothing.
00:20:19Nothing.
00:20:19This is the NFL on NBC.
00:20:30Back in Foxborough, the Patriots with a 7-0 lead on the Jets.
00:20:34Ben Coates on a two-yard touchdown pass play.
00:20:38Seven plays, 26 yards.
00:20:40Took 3.56.
00:20:41And it turns out that the punt that surprised the Jets, the punt by the place kicker, Vinatieri, pinned the Jets back and led to the interception.
00:20:49It was led to the great field position.
00:20:51And the touchdown.
00:20:52Here's the kick by Vinatieri.
00:20:55And it's played by Van Dyke.
00:20:59Alex Van Dyke is hit down.
00:21:02Excellent coverage.
00:21:03The Patriots' special teams doing a tremendous job.
00:21:07Larry Wiggum, one of the stars of that unit, on the tackle.
00:21:11Larry Wiggum, one of the stars of that unit, on the field, on the field, on the field, on the field.
00:21:19The Jets from their 25-yard line with Glenn Foley out of Boston College in his first NFL start at quarterback for the Jets.
00:21:28And again, the handoff to Morrell trying to break wide.
00:21:31The Patriots continue to do a good job.
00:21:33Adrian Morrell, who last week ran for 128 yards against the Houston Oilers, this time forced out by Dwayne Saab.
00:21:43Adrian Morrell comes in just 227 yards away from the Jets' season-rushing record.
00:21:51Trying to catch Freeman McNeil, who went for 1,331 yards back in the 85 season.
00:21:58He'd have to have a very strong finish for Bill Parcell's vote to be enough to kick him into that Pro Bowl.
00:22:02A lot of competition running back this year.
00:22:04Second and nine at the 26.
00:22:12And Foley airs it out along the sideline, but not able to connect.
00:22:16Double coverage on Wayne Crebet.
00:22:19Willie Clay and Ty Law not allowing Crebet to free himself up.
00:22:24Right here, let's check in with Greg Gumbel back in New York.
00:22:27All right, Marv, good news early on for Patriots fans in Seattle.
00:22:30Rick Meyer from 27 yards out to Joey Galloway flying down the sideline into the end zone.
00:22:37And the Seahawks with a 7-0 first quarter lead on Buffalo.
00:22:40Marv.
00:22:41Thank you, Greg.
00:22:42Buffalo coming off the overtime defeat to the Indianapolis Colts last week.
00:22:47Third down and nine for the Jets from the 26-yard line.
00:22:52The Patriots seven and the Jets nothing.
00:22:54Foley dancing around, could not find anyone, and down he goes.
00:23:01Teddy Bruschi, who has come up with a number of big plays.
00:23:06Third-round draft pick out of Arizona, who began the season primarily as a special teams guy,
00:23:12but he's being used in spot duty, has come up with his fourth sack of the season.
00:23:18And Teddy Bruschi, along with Chris Slade, on third downs, will line up in a three-point stance,
00:23:23and they'll rush.
00:23:24They'll be part of the four down linemen rushing the passer.
00:23:27That time it was good for a sack.
00:23:30Well, Brian Hanson, one-time Patriot, back to punt from the five.
00:23:36Dave Meggett comes up four, takes it to 44, muffs it, and has to cover up.
00:23:42At that time, Meggett just concerned about maintaining possession of 37-yard punt by Hanson,
00:23:50and New England gets it back with 4.36 left in the first.
00:23:58It appeared that Dave Meggett, in looking to recover the muff,
00:24:03may have hurt his wrist right here as he took the hit from John Hudson,
00:24:08and he's trying to shake it off on the sideline.
00:24:12Patriots, first and ten, and Bledsoe throwing to the outside,
00:24:15looking for Byers not able to connect.
00:24:18A lot of play action on first down.
00:24:20This is the kind of a feel that you'd expect to see a lot of the running game
00:24:23and a lot of straight-ahead running game.
00:24:26You're not going to cut back.
00:24:27Reverse field is good, though.
00:24:29Some reverses, we should see that before the day's over with.
00:24:33Second and ten at the 45-yard line.
00:24:36For the New England Patriots, it is their regular season home finale.
00:24:39They are hoping to host a playoff game here, a divisional playoff game.
00:24:45The ball goes well the rest of the way.
00:24:46Bledsoe in trouble, and he's taken down back at the 40-yard line.
00:24:51So Bledsoe sacked by the left defensive end.
00:24:54Bobby Hamilton, first-year player from southern Mississippi.
00:24:59Again, play action.
00:25:01They're still selling the run.
00:25:03All that does is try to hold the linebackers out of position a little bit.
00:25:06But nothing's happening fast because of the upfield rush.
00:25:09The Jets that time played the pass.
00:25:11They were coming hard up the field.
00:25:12They weren't playing the run.
00:25:13Forced Bledsoe back up into the pocket.
00:25:16Hamilton was there for the south.
00:25:17You can see the effects of the sloppy field on the uniform of the players.
00:25:22Dave Beggitt is back.
00:25:24It's a third and 13.
00:25:27And the pass for Megan.
00:25:30And Megan able to work his way close to the first down.
00:25:34He's just shy.
00:25:35Chad Cascadden on the stop.
00:25:38The Jets actually read the screen.
00:25:41No one really came after Bledsoe.
00:25:42They all, as you watch them set up here, look at all the linemen.
00:25:46Everybody kind of sees it, and they all stop.
00:25:48And they're chasing the screen.
00:25:49So the play was there.
00:25:50Marvin Jones, right in position, just slipped on the turf.
00:25:53Just short of the first down.
00:25:54He looks from the spot.
00:25:56They're going to measure it, I guess.
00:26:00When you run the screen play outside, the running back runs off of the blockers.
00:26:04In other words, the blockers aren't trying to hit a man and knock him left or right.
00:26:07The running back just watches which way he goes and tries to run the other way.
00:26:12Dave Beggitt spent six years as a member of the Giants.
00:26:15Part of that time with Bill Parcells.
00:26:18You can see they are just short of a first down.
00:26:20For Megan, a second year as a New England Patriot.
00:26:26They're going to go for it.
00:26:27This is one of Bill Parcells' trademarks.
00:26:29His fourth down situations don't scare him.
00:26:34Well, earlier he passed up a 48-yard field goal.
00:26:38Went for the pooch punt.
00:26:39That certainly paid off.
00:26:40It gave the Patriots the excellent field position.
00:26:44On a fourth and one earlier, Curtis Martin picked up three on the play.
00:26:50Now has a fourth and less than a yard.
00:26:53And it is a sneak attempt.
00:26:55And they pick it up.
00:26:56Bledsoe surging.
00:26:58Actually, it took a second effort by Bledsoe.
00:27:00And he got across on the right side.
00:27:03You know, the defensive line is going to pitch.
00:27:05You see them right in here real hard.
00:27:06They're going to pitch right at the quarterback position on either side of the center.
00:27:10Many times the hole is just off to the side on that second effort because everybody's pinched
00:27:15down hard inside.
00:27:15They're really three for three on fourth down because the pooch was a positive play for
00:27:20them, backing up a young quarterback around the five-yard line.
00:27:23You know, I enjoy the way you say pooch.
00:27:25I just realized that.
00:27:26It scares me that you do.
00:27:27It's a first and ten at the 44-yard line.
00:27:31And now Bledsoe throws sideline.
00:27:33He had a wide open Sean Jefferson.
00:27:37Sean Jefferson caught the first two passes on the first two plays of the game coming right
00:27:42back to him.
00:27:43And you're going to see in a soft field like this that the coverage has to be a little
00:27:46bit softer.
00:27:47They've got to give you a little bit more room because there's a chance you're going
00:27:50to fall down at any time.
00:27:51And just at the end of this, you're going to see how far open he is.
00:27:53The ball is just off target.
00:27:55Marcus Coleman in the area attempting the coverage.
00:28:00Jim Veccarella, the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets.
00:28:03It has been a very rough season.
00:28:07Very tough last couple of weeks.
00:28:10Jets have been outscored 70-20 the last two weeks.
00:28:14Off the pitch.
00:28:15Martin.
00:28:19Curtis Martin hauled down by the strong safety, Victor Green.
00:28:23We're down to 2.45 remaining in this opening quarter.
00:28:287-0.
00:28:29Patriots on top on the two-yard touchdown pass from Bledsoe to Coates.
00:28:34Bledsoe right now has a third and three.
00:28:38You know, Victor Green led the Jets in tackles last week.
00:28:40And you don't like to see your safeties leading by wide margins, although he did last
00:28:44week.
00:28:45That means that there are a lot of people breaking through that front line.
00:28:47We're going to be watching to see if the Jets quit or don't quit today.
00:28:51So far, they have not quit.
00:28:53Can you tell him?
00:28:54You'll be able to tell him.
00:28:55I know you have that eye for such matters.
00:28:59Martin with a nice second effort and is able to pick up the first down.
00:29:03Victor Green made the stop.
00:29:05Now, you mentioned earlier, though, it's a fine line between trying to determine whether
00:29:09a player quits or loses the competitive edge.
00:29:14I don't know how you really can tell.
00:29:16Well, I tell you, I don't think players really know sometimes.
00:29:19You see the play that we just, Martin going off the left side right there.
00:29:23But I don't think players really know sometimes that they have given into the competition.
00:29:28And that's quitting.
00:29:29Sometimes they just lose that edge because they're discouraged.
00:29:32But Rich Kotai, who in the past has held back in criticizing his team, did come out and
00:29:38acknowledge that he felt that that was the case, though.
00:29:41They quit as Bledsoe fires.
00:29:43Touched it.
00:29:43Oh, he's out of the end zone.
00:29:46Terry Glenn caught it out of the end zone.
00:29:50Fish was right on it.
00:29:52But that was an effort by a rookie wide receiver to try to get both feet in right at the end of
00:29:57the play.
00:29:57Just didn't quite get it there.
00:29:58The ball was a little bit too far out in front of him.
00:30:00Right down the middle over the free safety.
00:30:05See if we can tell if he gets him in.
00:30:07He's got possession.
00:30:08One foot.
00:30:10Second foot does not come down.
00:30:13That's why those officials are standing right on the line.
00:30:15I don't want to say anything nice about officials who get mad at me.
00:30:18But they do do a good job.
00:30:19You know, it's amazing how you try to turn it on the second and ten.
00:30:24Play action.
00:30:25And Bledsoe with the pass to Coates for the first down and some more.
00:30:30And once again, it is Victor Green coming up with the tackle.
00:30:36You know, Mark, we were talking about how you watch whether a team has really ended the game.
00:30:39I don't want to use that Q word again for a moment here.
00:30:41But if you see at the end of a play a lot of white shirts, that means a lot of defensive players in pursuit of the play.
00:30:48You're going to see here's Coach wide open in the middle.
00:30:51Zone defense.
00:30:52Now let's watch the end of it as it frames out how many white shirts we see.
00:30:56And there's three people on the and around the tackler.
00:30:59That's guys still hustling to the ball.
00:31:01If we get down the road here and there's only one guy in the frame at the end of it,
00:31:05it means everybody else is not pursuing like they were.
00:31:07That means they're giving in a little bit.
00:31:08And Victor Green is shaken up.
00:31:10It was a 16-yard pass play to Coates.
00:31:13The 10th play of the drive is coming up.
00:31:15How about Victor Green already here in the first quarter?
00:31:18Eight tackles, five unassisted, three assisted.
00:31:22So here's the strong safety, Victor Green, doing it once again.
00:31:29You can experience the NFL all week long on NFL.com,
00:31:35on the official website of the National Football League for all of the tackles and touchdowns
00:31:40and a live game day scoreboard.
00:31:42You can click on NFL.com.
00:31:45A minute eight remaining.
00:31:47In this opening quarter, the Patriots with a 7-0 lead on the Jets.
00:31:52And the Patriots are threatening once again.
00:31:54And when we resume, it is a first down at the 15 in Jet territory.
00:32:01And a look at some of the early games.
00:32:03Green Bay over Denver.
00:32:04John Elway sitting out.
00:32:05Bill Musgrave, the quarterback today.
00:32:07Pittsburgh knocks off San Diego.
00:32:08So the Steelers are 10-4.
00:32:12The Giants winning in Miami.
00:32:16And the Dolphins drop to 6-8 in Jimmy Johnson's first season.
00:32:21Jacksonville beats Houston.
00:32:24So the Jaguars at 7-7.
00:32:28How about your old club, the Buccaneers, knocking off the Redskins.
00:32:32So they've come on recently.
00:32:34Chicago beats St. Louis 35-9.
00:32:38These are final scores.
00:32:39Cincinnati by 7 over Baltimore.
00:32:42Carl Pickens another big day.
00:32:44And Atlanta 31 over New Orleans 15.
00:32:48These are the later games.
00:32:49Seattle now 10-0 over Buffalo, which is good news for New England.
00:32:53It is Carolina in front of San Francisco 10-0.
00:32:57Arizona 3-0 over Dallas.
00:33:00New England will play at Dallas next week.
00:33:04Now we're set.
00:33:05First and 10 at the 15-yard line.
00:33:08Patriots with double tight ends with Coates and Byers.
00:33:15Play action.
00:33:16Bledsoe able to complete.
00:33:19Sideline pattern.
00:33:20Sam Gash with the catch.
00:33:22And taken out by the free safety, Gary Jones.
00:33:25And I think the theory of most coaches is that when you have a slow field or a sloppy field,
00:33:31and this is a little bit sloppy, that you're better off throwing the ball because you don't have as much pass rush.
00:33:35They just can't get their feet dug in to get up the field and rush the passer.
00:33:38So the passer has a little more time.
00:33:40The coverage is a little bit softer because the defensive players don't want to run the risk of slipping down.
00:33:45An amazing stat passed on by Mr. Stats, Elliott Cowell.
00:33:49Patriots have run 20 plays.
00:33:51Victor Green, who was shaken up a moment ago, and we'll have a report on him momentarily.
00:33:57Green with eight tackles in his 20 plays.
00:34:00Second and one, and that was a quick hit up the middle by Sam Gash.
00:34:05And Victor Green is back on the field.
00:34:08Mark Spindler making that tackle.
00:34:11Let's see where they spot it.
00:34:14And again, you see what I mentioned earlier, a lot of white shirts around that ball.
00:34:18They anticipated the play correctly, filled the hole, but made the hit.
00:34:21They're playing hard as we finish this first quarter.
00:34:24It will be a third and one.
00:34:26Patriots are hearing it from the crowd.
00:34:28After one, they lead 7-0.
00:34:30Those are not happy numbers for Jets head coach Rich Kotite.
00:34:37Dominance by the Patriots in the first quarter.
00:34:41And certainly the speculation continues concerning Rich Kotite's coaching future with the Jets.
00:34:47Since taking over as head coach, he has won 4 and lost 25.
00:34:53The 3-13 season a year ago, and 1-12 this year,
00:34:58going back to his days with the Philadelphia Eagles.
00:35:0132 losses the last 36 games.
00:35:053rd down and 1 off the pitch.
00:35:08Mark, inside of the 5, and handles the first down.
00:35:12A first in goal.
00:35:14What a block by Sam Gash.
00:35:16The lead block by Keith Byers, and then the big block by Sam Gash on the toss outside.
00:35:20Everybody packed inside, expecting the run.
00:35:23They swear they've been going with the ball, and they pitched the ball outside this time.
00:35:28Curtis Martin is going to follow his man.
00:35:30Now, there's Sam Gash right there.
00:35:32He's just going to watch what he's doing, break off of that block,
00:35:35make one great individual effort at the end right there to make sure the first down and first and goal.
00:35:40It is a first and goal at the 2-yard line.
00:35:46Usually, the ball goes to Curtis Martin.
00:35:51This time, he's driven back.
00:35:53Ran it to Bobby Hamilton.
00:35:55Curtis Martin with 16 touchdowns in all to lead the AFC.
00:36:0013 have come on the ground.
00:36:03He's one of those Pro Bowl-type players.
00:36:05This league, this year, has a lot of players that are having special years
00:36:09that really merit that kind of recognition.
00:36:11Of course, all of them aren't going to get into the Pro Bowl.
00:36:13You know, there's a difference between the Pro Bowl voted on by the players and coaches
00:36:16and the All-Pro team, which is a different vote.
00:36:20Couldn't make no idea.
00:36:22That's the 14th play of the drive.
00:36:26Running start for Martin, but he is stuck.
00:36:29Stucked by Gary Jones.
00:36:31Sam, can you run down those differences between the Pro Bowl voting
00:36:34and the All-Pro?
00:36:36No, not right now.
00:36:37I don't know.
00:36:38Thanks a lot for calling me on that.
00:36:42Gary Jones, just ignoring Marv for a moment.
00:36:45Gary Jones, another safety.
00:36:46This time, it's the free safety, not Victor Green, the strong safety,
00:36:49but he's coming in on a design play.
00:36:52His gap was that particular hole, and he's come full speed.
00:36:55He didn't have any pass coverage on that.
00:36:58It'll be a third and goal at the 2, and a tie-out has been called.
00:37:05So we'll take a break.
00:37:06When we come back, Sam will demonstrate the difference
00:37:09in the look of the ballots between those two voting organizations.

00:37:33And by DirecTV, satellite TV at its best.
00:37:36Welcome back to Foxborough.
00:37:42Two minutes gone by in the second quarter,
00:37:44you see the great success the Patriots have had
00:37:47in the red zone inside the 20-yard line.
00:37:49And here is Bledsoe.
00:37:50Almost adding to that number.
00:37:53Sean Jefferson with the bobble and could not hang on.
00:37:58That's how they line up on the 2-yard line with a conventional set.
00:38:01Two running backs, one tight end, two wide receivers,
00:38:04and then split the tight end.
00:38:05Ben Coates out wide and tried to throw the little fade.
00:38:08This is a pass that is a time throw.
00:38:10The ball should be thrown right in the corner.
00:38:12Actually, when you practice this,
00:38:13the quarterback tries to hit the pylon in the back corner.
00:38:16If it's incomplete, it should go right to the pylon.
00:38:18That one should have been complete.
00:38:21And a 20-yard field goal attempt for Adam Vinatieri,
00:38:25who is 22 of 30 for the season.
00:38:30And this one is right through.
00:38:35Vinatieri, the rookie from South Dakota State,
00:38:38who has turned it in recent weeks,
00:38:41provides the Patriots with a 10-0 lead.
00:38:46New England with a 10-0 lead on the Jets
00:38:51as Adam Vinatieri gets set to kick it off
00:38:55to the combination of Alex Van Dyke and Reggie Cobb.
00:38:58It is taken by Cobb.
00:39:00Out across the 15.
00:39:03Nice move at the 20.
00:39:06And again, a good move.
00:39:07Works his way across the 35-yard line.
00:39:10And a good return by Cobb.
00:39:12And a penalty marker is thrown.
00:39:1434-yard return by the six-year man from Tennessee,
00:39:20Reggie Cobb.
00:39:23Reggie played for me at Tampa Bay.
00:39:25He never returned kickoffs like that.
00:39:27But you can see in that kind of an effort,
00:39:30and I hate to keep bringing up the fact
00:39:31that we're trying to measure whether a team is letting up or not.
00:39:34But since they have claimed to have done it last week, we'll look.
00:39:37Illegal block in the back.
00:39:40Donary return.
00:39:41Number 58.
00:39:4310-yard penalty.
00:39:45First down.
00:39:47Well, that is Aubrey Beavers' call for the penalty.
00:39:50Aubrey Beavers making some news the other day
00:39:53as John Elliott, his teammate, during practice,
00:39:56took a swing at him.
00:39:57You know, that's not all bad.
00:39:59I don't, uh, I think all coaches go through the penalty.
00:40:02Most of the time.
00:40:06Sam coming out for violence during practice sessions.
00:40:09I have no chance.
00:40:10Can we get along?
00:40:11Can we just try that?
00:40:13And off the first down play.
00:40:19Glenn Foley taken down by Sagapuritelli.
00:40:22And that is the second sack on Foley.
00:40:29It'll be a second down and 12.
00:40:31Talking to Bill Parcells yesterday,
00:40:33I asked him what the keys to the game were.
00:40:35And one of them was, of course, to get ahead early.
00:40:37Well, that's, everybody likes that one.
00:40:38Field position's important.
00:40:39And part of the reason field position and being ahead, mean,
00:40:42is that when you've got a young quarterback,
00:40:43you put him in a tough spot where he's got to make plays
00:40:45and you get the rush on him like this.
00:40:49Second and 12 from the 18-yard line.
00:40:52And here's Foley with a second completion,
00:40:55finding Keyshawn Johnson,
00:40:57who was stopped by the one-time Jet Otis Smith.
00:41:00Keyshawn Johnson has been requesting of offensive coordinator
00:41:04Ron Earhart to get the ball to him earlier.
00:41:08That's not the only thing he's been saying as of late.
00:41:12He came out yesterday with statements
00:41:16that the Jets' negativity on and off the field
00:41:20has actually given him regrets about joining the franchise,
00:41:24indicating he can't wait for the season to end,
00:41:27which is understandable when you're 1 and 12,
00:41:29but he can't wait to head back to the West Coast.
00:41:32Third down and 5.
00:41:33And the completion of the West is slaughtered.
00:41:36But still, if you're a teammate of Keyshawn Johnson,
00:41:39that's the kind of encouraging words that you're looking to hear.
00:41:42And as a coach anywhere, whether you're on the Jets' staff or not,
00:41:46you don't like to hear those kind of comments from players
00:41:48because they're selfish statements.
00:41:49Those are statements that are kind of centered around the fact
00:41:52that he's not getting the ball enough
00:41:53and that he loses interest early in the game if he doesn't get the ball.
00:41:57I mean, I can remember Paul Warfield back when the Miami Dolphins went 14-0.
00:42:02He caught 29 passes.
00:42:03He wasn't complaining.
00:42:04The team was winning.
00:42:06It is a first down at the 41-yard line.
00:42:10And Morrell on a sweep.
00:42:13Able to break the tackle.
00:42:14And Morrell, with a good run,
00:42:16has a first down run out by the free safety Willie Clay,
00:42:20and that's good for 18 yards.
00:42:22And that's what the New York Jets need today.
00:42:25They need to take the pressure off of Glenn Foley.
00:42:28Even though they're behind,
00:42:29they don't have to catch up in this half or this quarter.
00:42:32Just a straight side.
00:42:33You see, everybody's walled off right here.
00:42:35Let the running back that is as good as anybody in the league right now
00:42:39running the football, let him have it.
00:42:4423 yards on five carries for Morrell.
00:42:47First down at the 42-yard line.
00:42:50Patriots 10 and the Jets nothing.
00:42:52We're early in the second quarter.
00:42:55And the pass, incomplete, took a hop.
00:42:57It was scooped up by Keyshawn Johnson.
00:43:00Sam, you've had experiences with players like Keyshawn Johnson,
00:43:04who just loves to talk.
00:43:06And I think it's more of a situation where he just doesn't know how to say no
00:43:10when somebody comes up with a pen and pencil or a microphone,
00:43:13and he gives you whatever is on his mind.
00:43:15And it has obviously stirred things up this season.
00:43:19But you know what it does?
00:43:20It makes a young player like that who doesn't understand the ramifications of what he says,
00:43:25it makes him look bad.
00:43:26It makes him come across as a player who is not as much of a team player as he should be.
00:43:31This is a good football player, and he'll learn over time.
00:43:33Johnson in motion for the second down and 10.
00:43:39They get to Morrell, and he has stopped in his track.
00:43:42Stopped by Todd Collins.
00:43:44Collins playing for the injured Monte Brown, starting at strong side.
00:43:48Linebacker Brown out for the season with that Achilles tendon injury.
00:43:51Straight drop back, and they give it off on the draw play.
00:43:57Now, the draw is simply a comment to the defense saying,
00:44:00if we think you think we're going to throw the football,
00:44:03and that you're going to be in a pass-rushing mode,
00:44:04and we're going to hand the ball off late,
00:44:05and let you run by a lot of the, run by the ball carrier.
00:44:09The Patriots were waiting for the draw on the screen.
00:44:11A quick throw, an easy throw for the quarterback.
00:44:13Now they've got him in a tough spot, third and eight.
00:44:15Five minutes gone by in the second.
00:44:21And Foley completes to Johnson, and he has the first down.
00:44:26Great hands by the rookie from the University of Southern California,
00:44:30Keyshawn Johnson.
00:44:31That's good for 15 yards.
00:44:33He was tackled by Ty Long.
00:44:35And that's how you change the negative comments.
00:44:38Keyshawn Johnson has dropped five passes in the last two ballgames.
00:44:41You're going to say negative things when that happens.
00:44:44But when you make catches like that, stretch out for the extra yard,
00:44:47you're going to have people saying positive things about you.
00:44:50And that is catch number 51 on the season among the leaders in receptions,
00:44:56among rookies.
00:44:57Again, the sweep, and again, Morrell is taken down for a loss on the play.
00:45:03The middle linebacker, Ted Johnson, getting to Adrian Morrell.
00:45:08Ted Johnson, one of the captains of that defense.
00:45:11Anytime you're playing in the center of the defense,
00:45:13safeties, or middle linebackers, you are one of the keys
00:45:16because you've got to flow left and right.
00:45:18And many times, the design of the defense is to let you make the tackle.
00:45:22The defensive linemen are going to make sure the offensive linemen can get up on you.
00:45:25You slide over and make the tackle.
00:45:28Algrove's defense is designed just like that.
00:45:30And it worked out for Johnson on that one.
00:45:32Ninth play of this drive coming up.
00:45:35The Jets starting back at their 20-yard line.
00:45:38A short set by Foley.
00:45:40And he threw a bullet caught by Kyle Brady, the tight end who has rarely been in the offense.
00:45:48Kyle Brady with only his eighth catch of the season.
00:45:52We were talking about this yesterday with Ron Earhart, the Jets offensive coordinator.
00:45:56And you get the idea that the quarterbacks have kind of given up
00:45:59because Brady just is not getting open as frequently as they would like.
00:46:04That's exactly what happens.
00:46:05If you're not there, if you're a quarterback,
00:46:07if you've got about 3.1 to 3.3 seconds to drop back set and throw the ball to somebody,
00:46:13and the main return game is not getting open,
00:46:16you're not going to get the ball the next time.
00:46:18And it's expected.
00:46:2026 catches as a rookie last year.
00:46:24A catch a moment ago on his eighth.
00:46:26Foley can't find anyone.
00:46:28And apparently the play was whistle dead.
00:46:32With Chris Slade in the face of Glenn Foley,
00:46:36a penalty marker was thrown.
00:46:39Or is it the...
00:46:40Yep, apparently the play clock, too much time.
00:46:42Three games.
00:46:44Offense.
00:46:45Five yards, five yards.
00:46:46Remember the advice that Drew Bledsoe gave Glenn Foley.
00:46:51Be patient.
00:46:52Don't get discouraged if everything doesn't go right.
00:46:55And there's one thing that just didn't go right
00:46:57that is a mental mistake by a young quarterback
00:46:59not being aware of the 47 o'clock.
00:47:01The last start for Glenn Foley was back in 93
00:47:05while at Boston College in the CarQuest Bowl
00:47:08against Virginia.
00:47:10In fact, he was most valuable player of that game.
00:47:13It's a third down at 12.
00:47:15Foley steps up.
00:47:17And Foley directing traffic, able to complete it.
00:47:20Wayne Corbett
00:47:21was able to get the feet inbounds.
00:47:27A 15-yard pass play.
00:47:30Otis Smith on the coverage.
00:47:31And it's a Jet first down.
00:47:33Protection's actually holding up here.
00:47:35Anytime a quarterback has room to roll out
00:47:37or scramble out of the pocket.
00:47:39Wayne Corbett watched third down receiving
00:47:41for the New York Jets all year long.
00:47:42Another one on that play.
00:47:44You can see right here that Glenn Foley's actually telling him,
00:47:47turn up the field.
00:47:48Corbett ran into the flat,
00:47:50turned up the field when he got the signal from Foley.
00:47:53He's starting to get on the same page.
00:47:54An impressive drive by the Jets,
00:47:57converting on three.
00:47:59Third down place.
00:48:00Foley throwing to the end zone,
00:48:01but throws it away.
00:48:03Once again, double coverage on Keyshawn Johnson.
00:48:08How about this, Sam?
00:48:09The Jets have been able to convert on a third and five,
00:48:12a third and eight,
00:48:12and a third and 12 on this drive.
00:48:16Well, you know, that's progress.
00:48:17You'd hope that as the game goes along,
00:48:19that Foley becomes a little bit more comfortable
00:48:21with everything.
00:48:21The team starts to believe in him,
00:48:23and he starts to understand what's going to happen back there.
00:48:26As I mentioned earlier,
00:48:27everything happens real fast.
00:48:28Everything's kind of gray early,
00:48:29and then it clears up for the quarterback.
00:48:31Foley, 6 of 10, 64 yards.
00:48:34Intercepted once,
00:48:35looking at a second down and 10 at the 12.
00:48:40A deep drop by Foley to set the screen,
00:48:42and it does not work.
00:48:44Adrian Murrell is hit for the loss.
00:48:46The left defensive tackle, Mark Wheeler,
00:48:49along with Pio Sangapulotelli,
00:48:51make the stop.
00:48:53The New England Patriots have just read the screen
00:48:55every time they've got drive back to throw this pass.
00:48:57The quarterback is going to drop straight back.
00:48:59Now, he tries to look away from where he's going to throw the ball
00:49:02and then lay it back over to the other side.
00:49:04But look at all the Patriots.
00:49:05They're all ready.
00:49:07In a situation like that,
00:49:09they're probably yelling to each other,
00:49:10alert for the screen,
00:49:11alert for the screen,
00:49:12and they can sense that the quarterback
00:49:14isn't going down the field.
00:49:1513th play of the drive.
00:49:17It's a third and 16.
00:49:19Patriots 10,
00:49:20and the Jets nothing.
00:49:21Now, Foley's pass.
00:49:23It is caught inside the 10-yard line.
00:49:27Alex Van Dyke
00:49:28taken down by Jerome Henderson,
00:49:31and it brings up a fourth down,
00:49:34fourth and about eight.
00:49:36On the road,
00:49:37regardless of your record,
00:49:38kick the field goal right here.
00:49:40Fourth down and eight.
00:49:41The odds are too long
00:49:42that you're going to make that,
00:49:43especially tight down here
00:49:44with no threat deep
00:49:46because of the in line.
00:49:48In zone being only 10 yards deep
00:49:49when you're fourth down and eight,
00:49:50you really only have about
00:49:5115 or 18 yards to work.
00:49:53And this will be a 27-yard attempt
00:49:55by Nick Lowry,
00:49:56who certainly had his ups and downs
00:49:57this season,
00:49:59bothered by a knee earlier in the year.
00:50:01He's a one-time New England Patriot.
00:50:05Of course, Nick earlier in his career
00:50:06made the rounds.
00:50:07The high snap was put down,
00:50:09and Lowry's kick, good.
00:50:12So the Jets are on the board,
00:50:15trailing now by the score
00:50:17of 10-3 with 5.44 to go
00:50:21in the second quarter.
00:50:23Welcome back to Foxborough.
00:50:29Marv Albert with Sam Weiss.
00:50:305.44 to go in the first half
00:50:32in New England with the 10-3 lead
00:50:34on the Jets.
00:50:35Sylvester Green kicking away
00:50:37to Megan and Brown.
00:50:39And a return by Megan.
00:50:42Accelerates across the 35,
00:50:44across the 40-yard line.
00:50:47He put on the speed,
00:50:49and he returned it 36 yards.
00:50:52It stopped by Ronald Moore.
00:50:54Moment ago, Sam,
00:50:54we saw Bill Parcells
00:50:57very upset on the sideline.
00:50:59You know, sometimes a coach
00:51:01will just throw a fit like that
00:51:03on a marginal issue
00:51:05just to make sure that team
00:51:06is still in this ballgame
00:51:08like they should be.
00:51:09They got out to that early
00:51:1010-0 lead.
00:51:11The Jets now have gotten back
00:51:12into it 10-3,
00:51:13and he wants to make sure
00:51:14they're sharp.
00:51:14They understand they're in
00:51:15for a full four quarters.
00:51:16And a first down
00:51:18at the 41-yard line.
00:51:22Let's go with the short set
00:51:24completing to Glenn.
00:51:27And a flag comes flying.
00:51:28Bobby Houston on the stop.
00:51:30Another flag is tossed.
00:51:34First catch
00:51:34for the outstanding rookie,
00:51:37Terry Glenn,
00:51:37number 68 on the season.
00:51:39But let's see what this penalty involves.
00:51:42The ball was deflected at first,
00:51:44then the catch,
00:51:44and it looked like
00:51:45Bobby Houston got a little bit
00:51:46of that face mask of Terry Glenn.
00:51:54Personal foul.
00:51:55Face mask.
00:51:57Number 55.
00:51:59Defense.
00:52:00That's a 15-yard penalty.
00:52:02First down.
00:52:05Let's see if we can see the face mask.
00:52:06It wasn't a flagrant one.
00:52:07It didn't look like,
00:52:08but they are going to go 15 yards,
00:52:10which means that the officials
00:52:11thought it was there.
00:52:11There it is.
00:52:12He's cleanly got him.
00:52:13And he pulls it around.
00:52:15Anytime you see that neck snap like that,
00:52:17that's flagrant.
00:52:20So the good return by Megan.
00:52:22Now the pass completion of Glenn,
00:52:25followed by the face mask penalty,
00:52:26and the Patriots first down
00:52:28of the Jet 40-yard line.
00:52:31And that is dropped.
00:52:32Dropped by Byers.
00:52:35You know, going back to that face mask,
00:52:37that's why the officials
00:52:37gathered right there.
00:52:38I think they clearly saw the face mask.
00:52:40Then they wanted to decide,
00:52:41is this one worth 15 yards
00:52:43or five yards?
00:52:44And really and truly,
00:52:46in the heat of a ball game,
00:52:47sometimes a player,
00:52:48this is hard to say,
00:52:48but he can't let go.
00:52:50He's got his hand all the way around that,
00:52:51and he's got fingers in between that mask.
00:52:53You can't let go of it,
00:52:55and you just have to accept 15 yards.
00:52:56A second and 10 at the 40-yard line.
00:53:02Coach now split wide to the right side.
00:53:07And now comes in motion.
00:53:11Bledsoe with the time,
00:53:12and he completes Sean Jefferson
00:53:15on a hook pattern.
00:53:17Picks up the first down.
00:53:18Marcus Coleman and Victor Green
00:53:20combined to make the stop.
00:53:23Marcus Coleman had good coverage
00:53:25on Sean Jefferson,
00:53:26but after Sean Jefferson
00:53:28makes his final cut,
00:53:29watch Marcus Coleman slip.
00:53:31Right there.
00:53:32He loses his footing.
00:53:34Coming back to the ball
00:53:34like all good receivers do,
00:53:36the ball is thrown right waist high.
00:53:38You know,
00:53:38quarterbacks are told
00:53:38to throw the ball
00:53:39right at your belt buckle
00:53:40when you've got a still receiver
00:53:41because the ball seems to climb
00:53:43as the receiver moves back
00:53:44towards the quarterback.
00:53:45That's a tough field
00:53:46seeing guys go down
00:53:48right from the start.
00:53:49First down at the 29-yard line,
00:53:52and this is Martin off the pitch.
00:53:55Curtis Martin running well.
00:53:57You see the big chunks
00:54:02of the field coming up.
00:54:03The snow,
00:54:04the field was covered
00:54:05before the snow came down,
00:54:07but the seams and so forth,
00:54:09there was enough moisture
00:54:10getting through
00:54:10that it left this field
00:54:11really soggy.
00:54:12Snow and rain
00:54:13the last couple of days.
00:54:15It was in the advance forecast
00:54:17for today,
00:54:18but the weather
00:54:19has changed considerably.
00:54:21It is right now 41 degrees
00:54:23in the Foxborough area.
00:54:25Mario Greer,
00:54:26the rookie from Tennessee,
00:54:27Chattanooga,
00:54:28in the backfield
00:54:28for the first time
00:54:29in this second down
00:54:31and two.
00:54:32And this is Greer
00:54:34looking to throw
00:54:34on the option,
00:54:36throwing for the end zone,
00:54:37and it's broken up.
00:54:40Gary Jones
00:54:41knocked it away
00:54:42from Terry Glenn.
00:54:44Let me tell you,
00:54:45when you put a play in like that,
00:54:46you call it a trick play.
00:54:48I don't really like
00:54:49to call them trick plays
00:54:49because they're sound
00:54:51football plays.
00:54:52You're expecting good pursuit
00:54:53and good support,
00:54:55and the receiver
00:54:56is going to get behind you.
00:54:57But any time you do it,
00:54:59you tell that passer
00:55:00who is not a true passer,
00:55:01he's a running back
00:55:02who's going to throw a pass.
00:55:04If there's any doubt,
00:55:05run it.
00:55:05Don't throw a tight throw.
00:55:07In this case,
00:55:08he tried to get one in.
00:55:09There's double coverage
00:55:10right there
00:55:11and Gary Jones all over.
00:55:13That's his first
00:55:14passing attempt
00:55:15in the NFL.
00:55:16And Bill Parcells
00:55:17earlier this season
00:55:18said,
00:55:18I'm the Doug Bowe
00:55:19of the NFL.
00:55:20Curtis Martin
00:55:21looking for the first down,
00:55:24stopped by Brock.
00:55:26And Jones,
00:55:27Parcells referring
00:55:29to the open style
00:55:31of one-time NBA coach
00:55:33Doug Bowe
00:55:34because Bill has certainly
00:55:36aired it out a bit more
00:55:37this season.
00:55:37I think the 55-plus-thousand
00:55:42fans that are here,
00:55:43the sellout crowd,
00:55:4425 I think it is in a row,
00:55:45sellout here,
00:55:46like to see that.
00:55:47That's fun to watch.
00:55:48The offense is a lot more fun
00:55:50to watch than the defense.
00:55:51Let's face it,
00:55:52that's the spectacular part
00:55:53of the ballgame.
00:55:54If they don't make
00:55:55the first down right here,
00:55:57I'm going to predict
00:55:58that he goes for it
00:55:59because it's just going
00:55:59to be inches away.
00:56:02Sam really going on.
00:56:04I know the guy like a book.
00:56:06I know what he's going to do.
00:56:07But it is a first down.
00:56:10He invited me to play golf
00:56:11in the offseason.
00:56:12Oh, did he?
00:56:12Yeah.
00:56:13Vin didn't give me
00:56:13his home phone number
00:56:14so I could call him up on it.
00:56:16I tell you,
00:56:16all of us who have spent
00:56:17time with you this year
00:56:18can relate to that maneuver.
00:56:20Absolutely.
00:56:21And Curtis Martin,
00:56:23the 15th player
00:56:24in NFL history
00:56:24to rush for 1,000 or more
00:56:26in his first two seasons
00:56:27just went over
00:56:28the 1,000-yard mark.
00:56:31First down of the 19-yard line
00:56:33and a big hole for Martin.
00:56:34Curtis Martin inside the five
00:56:36and he's in for the touchdown.
00:56:48But Curtis Martin
00:56:49is 17th touchdown
00:56:52of the season.
00:56:57Reminiscent of a couple of runs
00:56:59that happened last week
00:57:00against the New York Jets.
00:57:02The one thing about
00:57:03Curtis Martin, though,
00:57:04everything is, quote,
00:57:05north and south.
00:57:06He's moving forward
00:57:07towards that line of scrimmage,
00:57:08full acceleration,
00:57:10watching the blocking
00:57:12take place
00:57:12but not pausing
00:57:13to see it take place.
00:57:14And now the try
00:57:18for the point after
00:57:18by Adam Vinatieri.
00:57:23Three minutes,
00:57:25four seconds,
00:57:26remaining of the first half.
00:57:28And it's the Patriots
00:57:29with a 17-3 lead
00:57:31on the Jets.
00:57:35This is a New England Patriot team
00:57:37that has responded
00:57:38exceptionally well
00:57:39after being blown out
00:57:41by Denver
00:57:4134-8.
00:57:42They follow it up
00:57:43with solid wins
00:57:44over Indianapolis
00:57:46and San Diego.
00:57:47Last Sunday night,
00:57:48a 45-7 route
00:57:49of the Chargers.
00:57:51Here's Reggie Cobb
00:57:52on the return.
00:57:54Across the 25-yard line.
00:57:56Again, a good return
00:57:57by Cobb.
00:57:59This time for 25.
00:58:01And the Jets
00:58:02will go to work
00:58:03right there
00:58:04at the 30-yard line.
00:58:05And it's Curtis Martin
00:58:06who has gone
00:58:07over 1,000 yards
00:58:08for the second straight season.
00:58:11The only other Patriot
00:58:12to do it
00:58:13for two straight.
00:58:15Jim Nance,
00:58:16one-time Syracuse orangeman,
00:58:18did it in 66 and 67
00:58:20for the Patriots.
00:58:211,458 yards
00:58:23in 66,
00:58:241,216
00:58:25in 1967.
00:58:29Jim Nance
00:58:30running out
00:58:32of the fullback position
00:58:33for the Patriots.
00:58:34And Curtis Martin's name
00:58:35goes along
00:58:36the name of Jim Nance
00:58:37in the record book.
00:58:39And here's Morrell.
00:58:41Short pickup
00:58:41stopped by Chris Slade.
00:58:44We're down to 2.45 remaining
00:58:46in the first half.
00:58:48And the Patriots
00:58:48have opened up
00:58:49a 17-3 lead.
00:58:50And Sam,
00:58:51this in sharp contrast
00:58:53to what happened
00:58:54in the earlier meeting
00:58:54at the Meadowland.
00:58:55Back on November the 10th,
00:58:57the first four possessions
00:58:58were interception,
00:58:59interception,
00:58:59fumble,
00:59:00and punt.
00:59:01These first four,
00:59:02the pooch punt,
00:59:02two TDs,
00:59:03and a field goal.
00:59:04if Lenzo had
00:59:05his difficulties
00:59:06in that first meeting
00:59:07four weeks ago.
00:59:08And that turned it around.
00:59:09Here's Morrell again
00:59:10to the right side
00:59:13and reaches across
00:59:14the 40-yard line
00:59:15stopped by Slade.
00:59:16It is a first down
00:59:18for the Jets.
00:59:19So Adrian Morrell
00:59:21has carried the ball
00:59:22nine times
00:59:23for 32 yards.
00:59:25New England has done
00:59:26a good job
00:59:27against him.
00:59:28Coming up on
00:59:28two minutes remaining
00:59:30in the half.
00:59:31And the Jets
00:59:32were not able
00:59:32to get the play off.
00:59:34There's the two-minute warning.
00:59:35We'll be back
00:59:36in just a moment.
00:59:37Stay with us
00:59:44at the half
00:59:44for the Domino's Pizza
00:59:46NFL on NBC
00:59:47Halftime Report.
00:59:48Greg Gumbel,
00:59:48Mike Dickett,
00:59:49Joe Gibbs,
00:59:50and Chris Collinsworth
00:59:51will get you caught up
00:59:52with all the scores
00:59:53and highlights
00:59:54from around the NFL.
00:59:56It's all coming up
00:59:57at halftime.
00:59:58Two minutes remaining
00:59:59in the half.
01:00:00And here is Foley
01:00:01able to complete
01:00:02leaping catch
01:00:03by Keyshawn Johnson
01:00:04and he picks up
01:00:05the first down
01:00:06by Scooter Magruder.
01:00:08And Mike Scooter Magruder
01:00:10is the fifth
01:00:11defensive back
01:00:12in the ballgame
01:00:12in this entire series.
01:00:14They've gone with
01:00:15five defensive backs,
01:00:16four rushing linemen,
01:00:18two linebackers.
01:00:19Just a straight
01:00:20out cut right here.
01:00:21No move at all.
01:00:22Timing throw
01:00:23to the outside.
01:00:23And you're going to see
01:00:24Scooter coming
01:00:24from the outside.
01:00:25He's going to try
01:00:26to keep it from
01:00:26going out of bounds.
01:00:27But instead of
01:00:28wrapping him up,
01:00:28he just throws his body
01:00:30and then you get it done.
01:00:31An advance of 12,
01:00:32third catch
01:00:33for Johnson
01:00:34and a first down
01:00:35at the 47-yard line.
01:00:37Flag comes flying
01:00:38and the play
01:00:39is blown dead.
01:00:41Looked like Kyle Brady
01:00:42left early
01:00:43and early movement
01:00:45like that,
01:00:46they're going to
01:00:46stop the play.
01:00:48False start.
01:00:50Number 88,
01:00:51offense,
01:00:52moving prior to the snaps,
01:00:54the five-yard penalty,
01:00:56first down.
01:00:57I've never been able
01:00:58to see this well
01:00:59since I've been up here
01:01:00from the sideline.
01:01:00I'd be yelling,
01:01:01who did it?
01:01:02But up here,
01:01:02you know right
01:01:03who it is
01:01:03because maybe
01:01:05in your next life
01:01:06when you come back
01:01:06as a head coach,
01:01:07you handle it
01:01:08from upstairs.
01:01:10It is a first
01:01:12as Foley fires
01:01:18intended for Brady.
01:01:21So Glenn Foley
01:01:22has been looking
01:01:23for the tight end,
01:01:24Kyle Brady.
01:01:26Kyle Brady's asked
01:01:27for the ball,
01:01:27but in this situation,
01:01:28it's second down
01:01:29and 15 now.
01:01:30This was the first
01:01:31and 15.
01:01:32Kyle Brady's just going
01:01:33to break to the outside.
01:01:34He's got the chance
01:01:36that the ball
01:01:36was just off target
01:01:37on that one.
01:01:38But it's second and 15.
01:01:39You don't have to get
01:01:40all 15 right now.
01:01:41There's a minute 51 left.
01:01:42It's important
01:01:43to move the ball.
01:01:44Don't give it back
01:01:44to the Patriots,
01:01:45but move the ball
01:01:46and get down
01:01:46and get some points
01:01:47before halftime.
01:01:49Second and 15
01:01:51at the 48
01:01:53in jet territory.
01:01:55Foley able to step up.
01:01:57Couldn't find anybody.
01:01:58Goes the short route
01:01:59and dropped.
01:02:00Morrell
01:02:00could not hold on.
01:02:02Adrian Morrell
01:02:04is a player
01:02:06that wants to win
01:02:07in the worst way.
01:02:07He goes into
01:02:08every ball game
01:02:09competing against
01:02:10his best effort.
01:02:11And this is the kind
01:02:12of thing, though,
01:02:13that when the team,
01:02:14things aren't going well
01:02:15for the team,
01:02:15even your most energetic
01:02:17players have
01:02:18that kind of a day.
01:02:20One hand out,
01:02:21ball a little bit behind him,
01:02:21but he'll catch those
01:02:22most of the time.
01:02:23He was telling us
01:02:24last night
01:02:25that he refuses
01:02:26to allow the
01:02:27negative attitude
01:02:28that Keyshawn Johnson
01:02:30has referred to
01:02:31to affect him.
01:02:33He says this is his job
01:02:34and he says he wants
01:02:35to be the best
01:02:36that he can do.
01:02:38Maybe kind of
01:02:39a catchy phrase
01:02:39in Oakland.
01:02:41Actually,
01:02:42for an advertising
01:02:42campaign,
01:02:43Webster Slaughter,
01:02:45the intended receiver,
01:02:47and he was covered
01:02:48by Magruder.
01:02:49Seven defensive backs.
01:02:51They brought
01:02:51five rushers.
01:02:54Man coverage.
01:02:55Illegal procedure
01:02:56against the offense.
01:02:57I am sure
01:02:58they'll decline this one
01:02:59because it brings up
01:03:00fourth and long.
01:03:01Illegal formation.
01:03:06Six men on the line
01:03:07of scrimmage.
01:03:08That penalty
01:03:09has declined.
01:03:10Fourth down.
01:03:12So,
01:03:12Brian Hansen
01:03:13will punt.
01:03:16You've got to have
01:03:17six men.
01:03:17Well,
01:03:17you've got five
01:03:18to begin with,
01:03:19but none of these
01:03:20players are on the
01:03:21line of scrimmage.
01:03:22Therefore,
01:03:23or maybe only one of them,
01:03:24you need two of those
01:03:24guys on the line
01:03:25for it to be
01:03:25illegal formation.
01:03:26Oh,
01:03:27the high snap
01:03:28handled by Hansen
01:03:29and then in trouble
01:03:30and he has to run it.
01:03:32And he takes the hit
01:03:33and is taken out of bounds
01:03:35by Marty Moore.
01:03:36Able to spin him,
01:03:37strip him,
01:03:38but the play is over.
01:03:40Marty Moore,
01:03:42you can just see
01:03:43the eyes light up
01:03:44as he saw the punt
01:03:46of Brian Hansen
01:03:47heading in his direction.
01:03:49This is the case
01:03:50that we talked about
01:03:50earlier in the day
01:03:52that when one thing
01:03:53goes wrong,
01:03:54teams that are having
01:03:55or struggling,
01:03:56everything seems
01:03:57to collapse around him.
01:03:58Put the ball
01:03:59right now,
01:03:59Brian Hansen.
01:04:00It doesn't matter
01:04:01if you're going to have
01:04:01people downfield,
01:04:02they'll just take
01:04:03the penalty.
01:04:04Don't take a loss
01:04:05to give field position
01:04:06to the New England Patriots.
01:04:07Big,
01:04:07big mistake
01:04:08by the punt.
01:04:12That's John Hudson.
01:04:14A man who
01:04:16snapped the ball
01:04:19until the minute 33
01:04:21remaining
01:04:22in this first half.
01:04:24Patriots have another
01:04:25chance to pick up
01:04:26more points.
01:04:28Curtis Martin.
01:04:31And he's brought down
01:04:32by the combination
01:04:33of Marvin Jones
01:04:34and Chad Cascadden.
01:04:36Second catch
01:04:36for Martin.
01:04:38Picked up seven.
01:04:39It'll be a second and three.
01:04:41A little quick screen
01:04:42out to the left.
01:04:42Get all the blockers
01:04:43out in front
01:04:44and let the runner run.
01:04:45With two timeouts left,
01:04:46they can afford to do that.
01:04:47They're going to be
01:04:48in field position
01:04:49for the field goal soon.
01:04:51And that pass
01:04:52thrown off the mark
01:04:54intended for Terry Glenn.
01:04:58That was a case
01:04:59that Drew Bledsoe
01:05:00didn't take his own advice.
01:05:01He did not
01:05:02maintain his patience
01:05:04on that one.
01:05:04That was a sidearm
01:05:05quick throw.
01:05:07Really didn't have
01:05:08anybody open
01:05:08trying to get one in.
01:05:09Bledsoe 10 of 18,
01:05:11114 yards.
01:05:13He has thrown
01:05:14for one touchdown
01:05:15connecting with Ben Coates.
01:05:17Now a third down
01:05:18and three
01:05:19with 105
01:05:20to go in the half.
01:05:23And again,
01:05:23we get whistles.
01:05:24Timeout.
01:05:31New England.
01:05:34Well, apparently
01:05:34the Patriots
01:05:35call for time.
01:05:38It is
01:05:39New England 17,
01:05:41New York 3.
01:05:47New England
01:05:47with one timeout
01:05:49remaining,
01:05:49a minute five to go.
01:05:51In this first half,
01:05:53they have a third down
01:05:54and three
01:05:55at the Jet
01:05:5542-yard line.
01:05:58That inspires
01:05:59in motion.
01:06:01And the pitch
01:06:02to Meggett
01:06:02turns the corner
01:06:03and has the first down.
01:06:06Able to get out
01:06:07of bounds
01:06:07to stop the clock.
01:06:09Marvin Jones
01:06:10with the tackle
01:06:13on Meggett
01:06:14forced him out.
01:06:16Holding on that one,
01:06:17though,
01:06:17they pitched
01:06:17quick to the outside
01:06:19and a clean tackle.
01:06:20We'll get the report
01:06:21on this one,
01:06:21but that's holding
01:06:22against the New England Patriots.
01:06:32Holding.
01:06:33Number 71
01:06:34offense.
01:06:36That's a 10-yard penalty.
01:06:38Third down.
01:06:39Well, it's called
01:06:39on the right guard,
01:06:41Todd Rucci,
01:06:42four-year man
01:06:43from Penn State.
01:06:45There was the thought
01:06:46earlier in the week
01:06:47that Bob Crutch,
01:06:48who's made it back
01:06:49from knee surgery
01:06:50and pneumonia
01:06:50might start
01:06:51at right guard,
01:06:51but the Patriots
01:06:52staying with Rucci.
01:06:55Right here,
01:06:56right in here,
01:06:57you see that,
01:06:58there's the host.
01:06:58See him tackle?
01:07:00Right there,
01:07:00he reaches out
01:07:01and just tries
01:07:01to tackle Bobby Hamilton.
01:07:04He gets the tackle done,
01:07:04but the holding is called.
01:07:06And it's a third down
01:07:07at 13,
01:07:07and here is Bledsoe.
01:07:09And the catch
01:07:10is made
01:07:10for the first down
01:07:12by Sean Jefferson
01:07:13in front of Marcus Coleman.
01:07:18And that's good
01:07:19for 15.
01:07:20Fourth catch of the day
01:07:21for Jefferson.
01:07:22Boy,
01:07:23this is the difference
01:07:23between a team
01:07:24that has everything
01:07:24going for it.
01:07:26They make the big plays.
01:07:27Sean Jefferson
01:07:28does it there.
01:07:29The Jets have the trouble
01:07:30to make them play.
01:07:31All right,
01:07:31Bledsoe on first down
01:07:32and completes
01:07:35inside the 30-yard line.
01:07:37Sam Gash
01:07:38stopped by Bobby Houston.
01:07:43And the clock is stopped.
01:07:45Timeout has been called.
01:07:46So,
01:07:47the Patriots
01:07:48taking their final
01:07:49timeout.
01:07:52Well,
01:07:52next Sunday,
01:07:53NBC Sports
01:07:54will present
01:07:55more NFL action
01:07:57at 12 noon Eastern
01:07:58with the NFL
01:07:59on NBC.
01:08:01These New England Patriots
01:08:02go up against
01:08:03Troy Aikman
01:08:03and the Dallas Cowboys
01:08:05and then in the second half
01:08:07of the doubleheader.
01:08:08You can catch
01:08:08an AFC West matchup
01:08:10with the Denver Broncos
01:08:11and the Oakland Raiders.
01:08:13That'll be the NFL
01:08:13on NBC next Sunday
01:08:15starting at 12 noon
01:08:16Eastern time.
01:08:20When we pick it up,
01:08:21second and five
01:08:22from the 28-yard line,
01:08:24you see 26 seconds
01:08:25remaining
01:08:27in this first half.
01:08:28A solid half
01:08:29for Bledsoe.
01:08:30Now 12 of 20,
01:08:31137 yards.
01:08:34Right now,
01:08:34they're sitting on a
01:08:3545-yard field goal,
01:08:3846-yard field goal,
01:08:40but on treacherous turf.
01:08:41They'd like to get it closer.
01:08:43This one would be
01:08:43a tough kick
01:08:44at this distance.
01:08:45Bledsoe with a long look
01:08:54to the end zone
01:08:55and then fires
01:08:56intended
01:08:58for Sean Jefferson.
01:09:00Take the shot
01:09:01down the field.
01:09:02There were 26 seconds
01:09:02left on the clock
01:09:03when that play was,
01:09:05when the ball was snapped.
01:09:06When the play started,
01:09:0720 seconds left now,
01:09:08third down.
01:09:09My guess is
01:09:10they've got to work
01:09:11to the outside.
01:09:11If they work
01:09:12to the middle
01:09:12of the field,
01:09:14they've got to hustle
01:09:14right back to the line
01:09:15of scrimmage
01:09:16and ground the ball.
01:09:17They've got no timeouts left.
01:09:20A win today
01:09:21by the Patriots
01:09:22and they'll clinch
01:09:23a playoff position
01:09:25in their 36-year history.
01:09:27They have never been able
01:09:28to clinch a playoff spot
01:09:29with two games
01:09:30with Maynard
01:09:31on the schedule.
01:09:32They're up by
01:09:33the count of 17-3.
01:09:36And now Bledsoe
01:09:36going short-range
01:09:38and able to complete.
01:09:40Terry Glenn runs it out.
01:09:43Run out by Gary Jones.
01:09:45That stops the clock
01:09:46with 15 seconds remaining
01:09:48and a first down
01:09:49for the Patriots
01:09:50at the 13-yard line.
01:09:52Smart play
01:09:53for a first-year player
01:09:54in this league.
01:09:55He's going up the sideline,
01:09:56but he's working his way
01:09:57toward the sideline.
01:09:58No chance in his mind
01:10:00he was going to cut back inside.
01:10:01The half would have been over
01:10:02had he done it.
01:10:03They've got time now
01:10:04for one shot to the end zone
01:10:05and they're in easy
01:10:06field goal position
01:10:07if they don't make it.
01:10:20Now Bledsoe to the other side
01:10:22and incomplete
01:10:23intended for Glenn.
01:10:24Believe me,
01:10:25he didn't want to catch that one.
01:10:26If he catches that one
01:10:27he's going to be tagged down
01:10:28immediately by Aaron Glenn
01:10:30and the half would have ended.
01:10:32They could not have reassembled.
01:10:33There's only 11 seconds
01:10:34left on the clock.
01:10:35You don't hear Aaron Glenn's
01:10:40name mentioned a lot
01:10:41because they don't throw
01:10:42in his direction.
01:10:44He's a very, very good cover man
01:10:47and pretty much everything
01:10:49goes away from him
01:10:50when you're especially
01:10:50in the tight throws.
01:10:53Second and 10 at the 13-yard line.
01:10:5511 seconds.
01:10:57Remaining on the half.
01:10:59Patriots looking for
01:11:00one more score.
01:11:02And Bledsoe incomplete.
01:11:06Once again intended for Glenn
01:11:08covered by Coleman
01:11:09and a flag thrown
01:11:12with seven seconds to go
01:11:15of a half.
01:11:16This looks like holding
01:11:18against the Patriots.
01:11:20Just what you don't want
01:11:22if you're a New England Patriot.
01:11:23Making this field goal
01:11:24even tougher.
01:11:24Max Lane on the hold.
01:11:36You know as a coach
01:11:37you're sitting there
01:11:37with 15 seconds left.
01:11:39You go ahead and kick
01:11:40the field goal or not
01:11:40you run the risk
01:11:41of the offense making
01:11:42a mistake like that.
01:11:43A holding penalty
01:11:44that makes the field goal tough.
01:11:45They were down there
01:11:46in almost chip shot range
01:11:47but with the field
01:11:48under these conditions
01:11:50this is a difficult field goal.
01:11:52The snap, the hold,
01:11:54every part of this
01:11:55is going to be tougher
01:11:55because of the way
01:11:56the field is.
01:11:57Adam Vinatieri earlier
01:11:59hit from 19.
01:12:01This a 41-yard attempt.
01:12:06Tom Tupa puts it down.
01:12:08Got to straighten it out.
01:12:09Did a good job.
01:12:11And the kick is good.
01:12:14Tom Tupa is the guy
01:12:15that made that one happen.
01:12:16The snap was just
01:12:17a little bit inside.
01:12:18When you're the holder
01:12:19you're on one knee
01:12:20you're catching the pass
01:12:20about seven or eight yards
01:12:22from the center.
01:12:23You've got to get it
01:12:23put the ball in the right spot
01:12:24put the laces forward
01:12:26all in about 1.2 seconds
01:12:28and you got it done.
01:12:29What a turnaround
01:12:29for Adam Vinatieri.
01:12:31Here's Tupa making
01:12:32the adjustment
01:12:33off the snap
01:12:34from Mike Bartram.
01:12:36Vinatieri now
01:12:3724 of 32
01:12:38for the season.
01:12:40We can recall
01:12:40earlier in the year
01:12:42Bill Parcells
01:12:44as you take a look
01:12:45at how close
01:12:45that just didn't
01:12:47make it inside
01:12:47the upright.
01:12:49Bill Parcells
01:12:49was referring
01:12:50to Adam Vinatieri
01:12:51as a guy
01:12:52who was weak to weak.
01:12:54I can remember
01:12:55one kick
01:12:55that when he made it
01:12:57it got him
01:12:58over the hump
01:12:59and if he had missed it
01:13:00it was called
01:13:00his death sentence.
01:13:02That was early
01:13:02in the year
01:13:02but he has certainly
01:13:03adjusted.
01:13:05You know a kicker
01:13:06will go that way.
01:13:06They'll start out
01:13:07or they'll have periods
01:13:08where they're just
01:13:09not swinging that leg right
01:13:10and then they get
01:13:11into sync
01:13:11and make those
01:13:13kind of kicks
01:13:13that you just made.
01:13:14He is a rookie
01:13:15from South Dakota State
01:13:16and getting set
01:13:18to kick it off
01:13:19with two seconds left
01:13:20in the half
01:13:21and the Patriots
01:13:22now up 20 to 3.
01:13:29Let's see how
01:13:30Monetary and the Patriots
01:13:32play it.
01:13:33This angles it
01:13:34and it's taken
01:13:37by one of the
01:13:38the hump men
01:13:39and that will
01:13:40wrap it.
01:13:42Reggie Cobb
01:13:43able to
01:13:45make his way
01:13:48to come up
01:13:49with that
01:13:49kick by
01:13:51Monetary.
01:13:52So at the half
01:13:53it's the Patriots
01:13:5420
01:13:55and the Jets
01:13:563.
01:13:57The Domino's Pizza

01:14:13Welcome everyone.
01:14:14Those of you who have been watching
01:14:14the Jets and the Patriots
01:14:15Greg Gumbel along with
01:14:16Joe Gibbs,
01:14:17Mike Ditka,
01:14:17Chris Collinsworth
01:14:18at halftime.
01:14:19Our score,
01:14:20the Patriots
01:14:21with a 20-3 lead
01:14:22on the New York Jets
01:14:23and Mike,
01:14:24I made the comment
01:14:25that Drew Bledsoe,
01:14:27let's try him,
01:14:28looks like he's playing
01:14:29with as much confidence
01:14:30as he's ever had.
01:14:30The thing about the whole
01:14:32football team right now
01:14:33and this is something
01:14:33you've got to watch now,
01:14:34they're peaking
01:14:35at the right time.
01:14:36Their defense is playing
01:14:37much more consistent football,
01:14:39they're getting a pass rush,
01:14:40the coverage is a little better,
01:14:41the corner is a little tighter,
01:14:43Bledsoe's excellent,
01:14:44Curtis Martin,
01:14:45great football player,
01:14:45very instinctive,
01:14:46good receivers,
01:14:47this team could be
01:14:48the team to watch now,
01:14:49I'm telling you.
01:14:49Drew Bledsoe
01:14:51in Seattle,
01:14:52the Buffalo Bills
01:14:53doing battle
01:14:53with the Seahawks
01:14:54at halftime.
01:14:55Seahawks lead it
01:14:56by a score of 16-8.
01:14:57Andre Reid went out early
01:14:58in the first quarter
01:14:59with a right knee injury,
01:15:00he will not return.
01:15:01Scoreless game,
01:15:02Seattle scored first
01:15:03off a Buffalo turnover,
01:15:04Rick Meyer to Joey Galloway,
01:15:0527-yard touchdown,
01:15:077-0.
01:15:08Jim Kelly back in the lineup,
01:15:09struggled early on,
01:15:10his pass intended
01:15:10for Russell Copeland,
01:15:11picked off by Darrell Williams
01:15:13who returned at 39 yards
01:15:14and set up a Seattle field goal
01:15:16to make it 10-0.
01:15:17Williams later intercepted
01:15:18another Kelly pass,
01:15:19it was 16-0
01:15:21when Kelly got the Bills
01:15:22on the board.
01:15:23This is a 37-yard strike
01:15:24to the rookie,
01:15:25Eric Mould.
01:15:26The two-point conversion
01:15:27was good,
01:15:2816-8 is the score
01:15:29and the Seattle Seahawks
01:15:32are 5-8 on the year,
01:15:33the Bills are 9-4.
01:15:35In San Francisco,
01:15:36the Carolina Panthers
01:15:37with a 24-14 lead
01:15:38on the San Francisco 49ers.
01:15:40This game approaches halftime
01:15:41and you have to be impressed
01:15:43by the Panthers, Joe.
01:15:44I am,
01:15:44and I'll tell you
01:15:44what impresses me,
01:15:45who would think
01:15:46that Kerry Collins
01:15:46is in a shootout
01:15:47with Steve Young
01:15:48and right now
01:15:49it looks like he's winning.
01:15:50And San Francisco's
01:15:50turned it over
01:15:51a couple of times.
01:15:52These guys are going after it.
01:15:53Just had personal fouls.
01:15:54I mean,
01:15:54they don't like each other.
01:15:55Collins leads
01:15:56the touchdown derby
01:15:573-2 to Steve Young.
01:15:59And in Arizona,
01:16:00the Dallas Cowboys
01:16:01trailing the Arizona Cardinals
01:16:03by a score of 6-0.
01:16:05Deion Sanders
01:16:06has not played
01:16:06and probably will not play
01:16:08in this game.
01:16:08Prior to the start of the game,
01:16:09he suffered lower back spasms,
01:16:11but defense
01:16:12hasn't been their problem.
01:16:13Yeah, the Cowboys
01:16:13lose their two best
01:16:14defensive players
01:16:15and their offense
01:16:15falls apart.
01:16:16Makes about as much sense
01:16:17as the rest of this thing,
01:16:18right?
01:16:18It's been nuts.
01:16:19Good analysis, Chris.
01:16:20Thank you very much.
01:16:21We'll bring you scores
01:16:22and highlights
01:16:22of the early games
01:16:23right after a word
01:16:24from the NFL
01:16:25and these words
01:16:25from your local station.
01:16:31This is the
01:16:32Domino's Pizza NFL
01:16:33on NBC Halftime Report
01:16:35brought to you by
01:16:36Domino's Pizza
01:16:37for Hot and Wow
01:16:38called Domino's.
01:16:41Now.
01:16:43Welcome back
01:16:44to our studios, everyone,
01:16:45for a look now
01:16:46at the early action today.
01:16:47And we will begin
01:16:48with the game
01:16:49in Green Bay
01:16:50where the Packers
01:16:51beat the Denver Broncos.
01:16:5241-6 was the final score.
01:16:54John Elway sitting this one out
01:16:56with a sore left hamstring.
01:16:57His counterpart,
01:16:58Brett Favre,
01:16:59had a great day.
01:17:00Four touchdown passes
01:17:01late in the first half
01:17:02after eluding the rush.
01:17:03He steps up,
01:17:04hits Antonio Freeman
01:17:05who caught three of them.
01:17:06This one good for 14 yards.
01:17:0713-3 Packers.
01:17:09Favre able to read the blitz
01:17:10and hit Freeman again
01:17:11who slips the tackle
01:17:12and turns into a 51-yard
01:17:13touchdown play.
01:17:15That made it 20-3.
01:17:16Green Bay fans
01:17:17have the Superdome
01:17:18on their minds.
01:17:19They claim the
01:17:20NFC Central Division title.
01:17:22And take a look
01:17:23at Antonio Freeman
01:17:24since he has returned
01:17:24from the injury list.
01:17:26He had a big day
01:17:27against Chicago.
01:17:27He had an even bigger
01:17:28day today
01:17:29against the Denver Broncos.
01:17:30And it looks like
01:17:31with all their
01:17:31walking wounded back,
01:17:33Joe, the Packers
01:17:33are looking good.
01:17:34Well, everybody said
01:17:35this was a preview
01:17:35of the Super Bowl.
01:17:36We hope not.
01:17:38Let's just like him, Joe.
01:17:39Yeah, I tell you, though,
01:17:41you can't,
01:17:41I don't think we can
01:17:42judge a game today
01:17:42without Elway.
01:17:43It's not the same
01:17:44Denver Broncos.
01:17:45I will say this.
01:17:45When Favre gets rolling,
01:17:47Mike made a comment,
01:17:47he's in the zone.
01:17:48You can't stop him.
01:17:4941 points a day.
01:17:50It's the highest scoring
01:17:51team in the NFL.
01:17:52And playing at home,
01:17:53Green Bay's going to be
01:17:54tough to compete.
01:17:54Packers have won 15 straight
01:17:55at Lambeau Field.
01:17:56The Broncos'
01:17:57nine-game winning streak
01:17:58is snapped.
01:17:59In Pittsburgh,
01:18:00the Steelers claim
01:18:01the NFC Central.
01:18:02They beat the San Diego
01:18:03Chargers 16-3.
01:18:053-0 in the first quarter.
01:18:07Wild play here.
01:18:08Mike Tomczak's pass
01:18:09to Jonathan Hayes
01:18:10is intercepted
01:18:10by Darian Gordon.
01:18:12He's hit by Terrence Shaw.
01:18:13His teammate
01:18:14loses the ball.
01:18:16Ernie Mills recovers.
01:18:17It led to a field goal
01:18:18by Norm Johnson
01:18:18in a 6-0 Pittsburgh lead.
01:18:20And then Tomczak
01:18:21for Andre Hastings.
01:18:2311-yard touchdown pass.
01:18:25Pittsburgh lead
01:18:26stretched to 13-0.
01:18:28The final score,
01:18:2916-3.
01:18:30And Mike,
01:18:31the Pittsburgh Steelers
01:18:32look pretty pliant
01:18:33for the postseason.
01:18:33I don't know
01:18:33if I know how good
01:18:35or you know how good
01:18:35or Bill Coward
01:18:36or how good they are.
01:18:37I don't think they're
01:18:37playing that good right now.
01:18:39Tomczak did not have
01:18:40a great day,
01:18:40but he did enough.
01:18:41They rushed the ball
01:18:42well enough.
01:18:42But the thing that looks
01:18:43good right now
01:18:44that's going to keep them
01:18:44in everything
01:18:45is that great defense
01:18:46they have.
01:18:47They're putting pressure
01:18:47on the quarterback.
01:18:48They're stopping the run.
01:18:49They're doing everything
01:18:49they have to have
01:18:50with the defense.
01:18:51But they've got to have
01:18:51more offense
01:18:52if they're going to get

01:19:40over their last eight games.
01:19:42In Houston,
01:19:42the Oilers
01:19:43with a chance to step up.
01:19:44They didn't do it.
