00:00:00Well, and a word from your local station, New England.
00:00:05Well, one thing about this game, when you look at the two turnovers, they should mean something,
00:00:08but the two turnovers that Miami got didn't score a point off of it, and that's what's bad.
00:00:13And Abdul-Jabbar compared with Curtis Martin, who led the AFCN rushing last year,
00:00:18nine for nine yards for Martin, two touchdowns.
00:00:21Abdul-Jabbar chipping in with 71 yards rushing.
00:00:24Well, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Miami wants to run the football to help their defense out.
00:00:28But New England, really, in all honesty, I don't think they care that much.
00:00:31They know they're going to live and die with the pass, and every once in a while if they have a good running game, so be it.
00:00:36That'll be a little icing on the cake, but they're going to live and die this season
00:00:40with throwing the football and winning some tough games at the end.
00:00:43We talked to both coaches yesterday, and they both said the same thing.
00:00:46We are so evenly matched, this is going to come down to final possession.
00:00:49They both thought this would be a game one in the final minutes, and so it appears to be.
00:00:54We start the second half, Vinatieri, line dry, Spikes picks it up on the bounce, 15, 10 to the 20,
00:01:04flag down as Spikes moves it to the 27-yard line, tackled by Wiggum.
00:01:12Now let's check the penalty.
00:01:13Well, these two coaches, there are a lot of twos in their line.
00:01:18They're tied today, and a lot of twos.
00:01:21They both have two Super Bowl championships.
00:01:24Both have two.
00:01:25Holding number 51 on the return, 10 yards, first down.
00:01:30Both have two opportunities as head coaches in the NFL.
00:01:34But what's really important, what really makes them what they are today,
00:01:37two years working for the network.
00:01:40That's what, there you go, that's right.
00:01:42That's what got them back into coaching.
00:01:45Would they work with you?
00:01:46Oh, no, no, no.
00:01:47No, they didn't work with you?
00:01:48Uh-uh.
00:01:49Oh, Miami with a 10-yard penalty on the return, starts at the 17.
00:01:57And Bill Javon wrapped up.
00:02:01Willie Clay from his safety spot.
00:02:03Jim Gray, what do you have for us?
00:02:05I spoke with both coaches, Dick.
00:02:06First, Bill Parcells said the second quarter was the worst quarter we have played all year.
00:02:11He said he told his guys we're very lucky to survive it,
00:02:13and hopefully we'll be able to come out with a victory.
00:02:15Now, as for Jimmy Johnson, he said the radio communications,
00:02:18really hampered them, as well as the injury to his running back in the first half,
00:02:22because he said that was the guy that we used to communicate the plays.
00:02:25And with our communications out, we really struggled there,
00:02:27and it hurt us at the end of the half.
00:02:29Dick?
00:02:29Thank you, Jim.
00:02:30Referring to Cheris McPhail, who broke his arm and is out for the year.
00:02:34Dropped by Abdul Jabbar, perhaps guilty of the run before the catch was secured.
00:02:41One of the things that surprised me in that first half, Phil, is Miami.
00:02:46We thought, talking to Jimmy Johnson, your defense would be aggressive,
00:02:49an aggressive defense.
00:02:50They are not.
00:02:51They have not played aggressively.
00:02:53And we're talking about in the secondary, folks.
00:02:54That's right.
00:02:55Two quarters in safety.
00:02:56I saw one blitz in the first drive that they caught New England off guard.
00:03:00But besides then, I've seen all what we've seen from Miami all year long,
00:03:04a defense that's sitting back just trying not to give up the big play.
00:03:07Well, you know, that guy wearing 13 will play aggressively.
00:03:11Third and eight.
00:03:16Comes it to the sideline, but it's one hopped incomplete.
00:03:19Lamar Thomas is going to argue, but it appeared to bounce in.
00:03:25Jimmy Hitchcock covering for New England.
00:03:28So, the punting team on, and John Kidd to kick it for the Dolphins.
00:03:33So, a quick three and out for Jimmy Johnson's Miami team.
00:03:38The wind still blowing into the face of the kicker, Kidd,
00:03:42but not with nearly the velocity of earlier today.
00:03:46Meggett stands at his own 40.
00:03:50Good kick.
00:03:52Meggett retreats to the 31.
00:03:54And returns out across the 45-yard line.
00:03:5915 on the return.
00:04:01A 50-yard punt.
00:04:05Patriot cheerleaders are well muffled.
00:04:10As you look at the quarterback comparison,
00:04:12Bledsoe, solid 15 for 20 in that first half.
00:04:16This is on his first attempt for Terry Glenn.
00:04:19It is, indeed, 50 degrees cooler today
00:04:22than it was almost two months ago to the day
00:04:24when they played in Miami.
00:04:26Hurry up offense.
00:04:27He's got four wide receivers out there.
00:04:29Would make it.
00:04:30It worked at the end of the half,
00:04:31so Parcells comes out with it to start the second half.
00:04:34Throw to the sidelines complete.
00:04:37And it's Hassan Graham with his first catch today.
00:04:40J.B. Brown on the coverage.
00:04:42Right at the sticks.
00:04:43First down.
00:04:48Well, they had success with it at the end of the first half,
00:04:50so now why not stay with it?
00:04:52And what it did at the end of the first half,
00:04:54it made Miami play very soft and vanilla-type defense.
00:05:01Bledsoe hit.
00:05:02He fumbles.
00:05:03And it's recovered by the Dolphins at the 47-yard line.
00:05:07Fans claiming that Bledsoe had his arm forward.
00:05:10Daryl Gardner recovers the ball,
00:05:13but it was Daniel Stubbs who'll get the forced fumble
00:05:16and his eighth sack of the year.
00:05:19Stubbs with the third Miami turnover today.
00:05:22Well, it was actually good protection by the New England line,
00:05:25but Drew Bledsoe cannot find somebody open down the field,
00:05:28has to hold on to it just a fraction longer,
00:05:30and that is a fumble.
00:05:31His arm was not going forward.
00:05:33Good call by the officials.
00:05:35Well, you can see his arm.
00:05:36His arm is going forward after he's hit.
00:05:39Right here he's hit, and then he moves his arm forward.
00:05:41That ball came out.
00:05:42That's an excellent call.
00:05:44Bruce Armstrong not beaten very often, but Stubbs got him.
00:05:48Moreno starts at the 46.
00:05:50What?
00:05:51What?
00:05:52Runs it to the sidelines.
00:05:54It is affected by Hitchcock.
00:05:56Flag is down.
00:05:58Hitchcock to the 45.
00:06:00Picks up blockers.
00:06:01And with a 35-yard line, but was there interference?
00:06:07The flag is back at the spot where Hitchcock picked it off.
00:06:1142-yard return if...
00:06:16It's coming back.
00:06:20You know, this is twice now on Hitchcock.
00:06:23Once it was a holding penalty.
00:06:26Pass interference.
00:06:26Here it is, number 41, defense, first down.
00:06:31I don't think it's 41.
00:06:36Because 41 is Keith Byers, and he's on the offense.
00:06:39So I think it's 31.
00:06:40And Hitchcock, again, they have pass interference on him.
00:06:44Watch Jimmy Hitchcock, number 31, against Randall Hill.
00:06:49And he sticks that left arm out.
00:06:51And that has to be what the referee saw.
00:06:53Boy, they don't call that very often, though.
00:06:54They've been letting that go all year long.
00:06:56Sometimes, if you stick that left arm out,
00:06:58they think you are getting in the way of the receiver,
00:07:01stopping his progress, and they will call that a pass interference.
00:07:04See, everybody has a right to the ball once the ball is in the air.
00:07:06But what happened with Hitchcock, when he put that arm in there,
00:07:09he pushed off.
00:07:10And as he pushed off, the defender goes down.
00:07:14I think the receiver sold it very well.
00:07:1922-yard penalty, plus the 44 yards that New England didn't get on the return.
00:07:24And there's a big, big play in this game.
00:07:27Abdul-Jabbar on first down.
00:07:29And a little scuffle after the play, and flags fly.
00:07:34Dale Hamer's hat as well.
00:07:36Troy Drayton, the tight end.
00:07:37Such an important game.
00:07:43And from the start, the hitting has been at the highest level.
00:07:46And the emotions, of course, carrying the ferocity of play.
00:07:51You see Marino in there trying to sell it?
00:07:52Yeah, everybody said they're all lawyers.
00:07:56Pistol foul.
00:07:57Number 84 in the offense.
00:07:58They're doing action.
00:08:02They ticket Troy Drayton, the tight end.
00:08:11Here's Troy Drayton right up in here.
00:08:14He gets hit by Jones, and then he retaliates.
00:08:17And the only thing the officials see is retaliation.
00:08:19And what you, you know, it normally is that way.
00:08:22Second man in.
00:08:23That's a big penalty to absorb for Miami as Drayton is pulled out by Johnson.
00:08:31And Brett Kerlin replaces him at tight end.
00:08:33They mark the penalty back out to the 36-yard line.
00:08:37This is the third turnover the Miami Dolphins have gotten today.
00:08:40And they really haven't taken advantage of them.
00:08:43Paul, you say it so many times.
00:08:45You talk about you only get so many chances in a football game.
00:08:47And I think Jimmy Johnson realizes they've got to take advantage of this.
00:08:51The play stands, the run stands, although they haven't changed the down box.
00:08:58Because after the play, the penalty.
00:09:02You know, just to underline, if you're a New England fan, you'd be nervous about that turnover.
00:09:06Whenever, and recently, Bill Parcells' team, they've given it away more than they've taken it away.
00:09:11They're 0-10.
00:09:13They're 7-1 when they're in the plus column, taking it away more than coughing it up.
00:09:18See, I think that's what Bill Parcells is complaining about now.
00:09:21He wants it to be second down because this actually occurred after the play.
00:09:25So, the Patriots are minus three today.
00:09:32And yet, to this point, it has not cost them the three turnovers.
00:09:4021-yard penalty is what it amounts to.
00:09:43And first down, Marino.
00:09:47And they've complete.
00:09:48Pritchett, the fullback, inside the 25-yard line.
00:09:52He's a perfect throw on the run.
00:09:53Hits his fullback, Collins and Malloy.
00:09:55Make the stop.
00:09:5612 on the play.
00:09:57But when you say it's unfair to have a linebacker on the back, it's Pritchett and Collins.
00:10:00Now watch Pritchett.
00:10:01He just delays.
00:10:02Comes underneath.
00:10:03Now Collins has to run with him.
00:10:04And Marino just hits Pritchett right away on the play.
00:10:07I mean, it's just a nice, easy pickup.
00:10:09Dan Marino immediately sees its man-to-man coverage and Pritchett too fast for Collins.
00:10:14And that's the one thing Dan Marino does better than anybody.
00:10:17Make a quick decision.
00:10:18Throw the football.
00:10:19Second and nine.
00:10:22Lock.
00:10:25Stacked up.
00:10:26Willie McGinnis was first there.
00:10:28Number 55, who's had a big season for the Patriots defensively with five sacks.
00:10:33And, of course, an interception touchdown against Buffalo last week.
00:10:39A reminder, next week here on NBC, here's our lineup beginning at 12 noon Eastern with the NFL on NBC.
00:10:45Most of you will see the Patriots against the Jets.
00:10:49Other AFC East showdown.
00:10:51Dolphins hosting Harbaugh on the Colts.
00:10:53Some of you will get the Bills battle with the Eagles.
00:10:55All regional action.
00:10:56It all starts 12 noon next Sunday here on NBC.
00:11:00Third down.
00:11:06Incomplete.
00:11:07It appeared Miami's Randall Hill had a touchdown.
00:11:10But Jimmy Hitchcock denied.
00:11:12Got a hand in.
00:11:13Ripped it away.
00:11:16An excellent job by Jimmy Hitchcock.
00:11:18Number 31 of the New England Patriots.
00:11:21Dan Marino again sees the man coverage outside.
00:11:25Randall Hill looks at the top of your screen.
00:11:26And he tries to throw the ball to the line before the defender turns around.
00:11:30But Jimmy Hitchcock, he knows Marino will do that.
00:11:33Got his hands up at the last second to deflect the ball.
00:11:36It deflects the ball.
00:11:37But look at the ball.
00:11:37It's Hill right in the shoulder pads.
00:11:39And that's what Marino looked at him about.
00:11:41You know, catch the ball.
00:11:42I'm going to hit you with it.
00:11:42But that was a hard catch.
00:11:4439-yard field goal attempt.
00:11:46Netany.
00:11:46And this time, he knocks it in.
00:11:52Oh, the Dolphins take advantage of the turnover.
00:11:56Enjoy a three-point lead.
00:12:00Now, Daniel Stubbs' sack and forced fumble against Bledsoe leads to the 39-yard field goal.
00:12:07And Jim Gray with a special friend.
00:12:10Well, a very special friend and a guy that all of professional football is missing right now.
00:12:14Don Shula here to watch his former team.
00:12:16Don, how much do you miss being on the sidelines, particularly a close game like this one?
00:12:19Well, this is what it's all about.
00:12:20You know, I've been here for 33 years as a head coach.
00:12:23So you don't walk away from something like this without missing it.
00:12:26I didn't miss training camp, and I didn't miss some of the other things, the preseason.
00:12:30But once the regular season starts, that's where you miss the competition more than anything else.
00:12:36All right.
00:12:36Dick's going to give us the kickoff, and we're going to get your assessment of the Dolphins.
00:12:39We'll be right back with you, Don.
00:12:41Dick.
00:12:42Netany kicks it off.
00:12:4317-14 in Miami.
00:12:46At the 12.
00:12:52Fighting for that extra yard across the 35.
00:12:57So far, Don, of how the Dolphins have done this year.
00:13:00They're 4-4.
00:13:01Well, they started out, obviously, great.
00:13:03And they had a running game, and then they seemed to get away from that.
00:13:06And today, they're back to the running game.
00:13:09They're controlling the line of scrimmage, and they've got the takeovers.
00:13:12That's what helped them win the games early in the year.
00:13:14You've got to get the takeaways, and you've got to control the line of scrimmage.
00:13:17And you see them doing that here today.
00:13:19Everybody has been very careful not to use the word retirement with you.
00:13:23There's already been a couple of coaches, including your son, who've lost his job.
00:13:26As we watch the play, we're going to ask you about your future.
00:13:32What about your future?
00:13:33Will you coach again, and will you consider some offers this offseason?
00:13:36Well, I haven't even thought about it.
00:13:37You know, I'm at peace with myself over the decision that I made, and I'm trying to enjoy this season.
00:13:44And there are times where I enjoy it, and other times I miss it.
00:13:48But I haven't made any judgments as to what I want to do.
00:13:52And I'm going to get through this year and then see what happens.
00:13:57How much input, if any, do you have?
00:13:59You were reluctant at first to be involved with the Dolphins at all.
00:14:02You have spoken with Jimmy on a number of occasions.
00:14:04How much input do you have now with the Dolphins?
00:14:06I'm vice chairman of the board of directors and a part owner,
00:14:09but I don't do anything as far as day-to-day involvement with the Dolphins.
00:14:14Certainly, you know, I'd like to see him have a good year, get into the playoffs, and win.
00:14:18And I'd love to see Dan Marino wear that Super Bowl ring.
00:14:21That's what I got mine on, and I'd love to see Dan get one.
00:14:25Because if anybody deserves it, the way that he's competed through the years
00:14:28and the records that he's set, you know, that's what you hope for.
00:14:32Don, it's great to see you.
00:14:33You were honored before the game.
00:14:34Congratulations.
00:14:35Enjoy this time off, since we won't call it a retirement.
00:14:39Back over to you, Dick.
00:14:40Thanks, just in this great game.
00:14:41We have a timeout.
00:14:42We'll return to Foxboro in a moment.
00:14:44Welcome back.
00:14:48On that last play, watch Bledsoe.
00:14:50Is this a forward pass or a lateral?
00:14:53Well, this ball's going to land behind Bledsoe,
00:14:55but the officials say that it was not a lateral.
00:14:57Megat did the smart thing.
00:14:58He picked that thing up off the ground.
00:14:59He knew that was behind.
00:15:01That would have been an eight-yard gain in the first down
00:15:03and said it's third and one.
00:15:07Play action.
00:15:08Bledsoe down the middle.
00:15:10Intercepted.
00:15:11Sean Wooden.
00:15:11And Wooden has the fourth turnover of the game.
00:15:16Miami at the New England 36.
00:15:19Now there was some aggressive defense.
00:15:22A little bit.
00:15:24Well, yes, it was an aggressive throw, Paul, by Drew Bledsoe.
00:15:27And Sean Wooden playing free safety.
00:15:29Nobody to cover.
00:15:31Sees Terry Kling coming across the field.
00:15:33Watch Sean Wooden.
00:15:35Sees the ball coming.
00:15:36He does an excellent job, though, of coming forward,
00:15:38being aggressive, attacking the football once it's in the air.
00:15:42But Drew Bledsoe falling away from the line of scrimmage,
00:15:45thrown across his body.
00:15:46That's a tough throw to try to make in the NFL.
00:15:50Wooden, the rookie from Notre Dame,
00:15:52his second interception of the year.
00:15:54Leading 17-14.
00:15:56Missed an 11-3 man in the third quarter.
00:15:58It's Abdul-Jabbar.
00:15:59Rookie, rookie, rookie.
00:16:00Now this Jimmy Johnson team.
00:16:02And he fumbles.
00:16:03Does it count?
00:16:04No signal yet by the officials.
00:16:06What a weird game.
00:16:07Maybe it's a hangover from Halloween.
00:16:10And we've had balls bouncing the entire game.
00:16:13And calls, difficult calls to make.
00:16:16Well, it started way back at the beginning of the first quarter
00:16:18when Megan fumbled the ball going into the end zone.
00:16:22They give it to him.
00:16:22They said he hit the pylon.
00:16:23It was out of bounds.
00:16:24Then a fumble on a touchdown by Curtis Martin.
00:16:27New England, New Orleans.
00:16:30It's incredible what's happening.
00:16:32It took a while to decide, but the officials agree it's New England's ball.
00:16:37Abdul-Jabbar.
00:16:38He thought he was down.
00:16:39Let's see.
00:16:44Oh, he was clearly down.
00:16:46He's down.
00:16:46He's down.
00:16:47Clearly down.
00:16:48I mean, this game may be another strong bid for instant replay.
00:16:53Because Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is on the ground right here.
00:16:57Now, you see the ball in his arm.
00:16:59Now, he has it clearly.
00:17:00The ball comes out.
00:17:01This is a terrible call.
00:17:04But all the officials must have been screened.
00:17:06No one saw it.
00:17:07And Jimmy Johnson, we're going to have to put a straitjacket on him.
00:17:12Well, you see, what happened is Jimmy Johnson sees the replay in here.
00:17:16He sees the replay in the stadium.
00:17:18And that's what he's upset about.
00:17:20Well, he has had a couple tough calls go against his team the last few weeks.
00:17:25So, he keeps building up for the coach.
00:17:27And he keeps seeing these mistakes by referees.
00:17:30And that's why you get that reaction.
00:17:32So, questionable call.
00:17:33And Patriots take over their 28.
00:17:36Bledsoe guns it.
00:17:38And played again to Terry Glenn.
00:17:40Glenn continues to rack up the numbers.
00:17:4213 more yards for the rookie on his eighth catch of the game.
00:17:47Well, the ground cannot cause a fumble.
00:17:49And you can clearly see Abdul-Jabbar has the ball when he hits the ground.
00:17:53But the problem is, look at all the officials.
00:17:56There's so many bodies around.
00:17:58Nobody can tell if the ball went and came out.
00:18:01I tell you, you're looking at this year.
00:18:04There are so many plays that can be used as far as instant replay coming back again in some form.
00:18:10It's not a perfect world.
00:18:11And this certainly has been a game not called very perfectly.
00:18:15Great play action again by Bledsoe.
00:18:17He guns it.
00:18:18And Sean Jefferson and a fly down as Jefferson out of bounds at the 29.
00:18:25They're going to call this offensive pass interference on Sean Jefferson because he pushed off in order to come back.
00:18:31He sure was open.
00:18:33Yeah.
00:18:33That would help.
00:18:35You know, you know, you can open.
00:18:37This really helps, Dick.
00:18:37When you shove the guy down the field and then you come back to the ball.
00:18:41But I tell you, he had no reason to push off.
00:18:44He had Calvin Jackson running down.
00:18:46That's interference.
00:18:47Offense.
00:18:48Number 84.
00:18:4910 yards.
00:18:51Their first down.
00:18:52The Patriots basically were sending Sean Jefferson out against Calvin Jackson one-on-one and no other receivers down the field.
00:19:00He sells the long pattern and he uses both hands to push off.
00:19:04I mean, Calvin Jackson, you're right.
00:19:06He was gone anyway.
00:19:06He was looking for the deep ball.
00:19:09When the quarterback holds the ball that long, usually that defensive back knows, look long, he's trying to throw it on us.
00:19:14That's a 40-yard play.
00:19:1610 on the penalty and 30 that they didn't get on the catch.
00:19:20Screen.
00:19:21Curtis Martin.
00:19:22Moving on.
00:19:23Into the corner.
00:19:2440.
00:19:2550.
00:19:27Curtis Martin to the 27-yard line.
00:19:31Woo!
00:19:35Woo!
00:19:36Woo!
00:19:36Woo!
00:19:37Woo!
00:19:37Woo!
00:19:37Woo!
00:19:38Woo!
00:19:38Woo!
00:19:38Woo!
00:19:38Woo!
00:19:39Woo!
00:19:39Woo!
00:19:39Woo!
00:19:40Woo!
00:19:40Woo!
00:19:40Woo!
00:19:41Woo!
00:19:44Outstanding screen pass and Curtis Martin cuts it back in inside.
00:19:49You know that Calvin Jackson saves a touchdown.
00:19:51Sam Gash is blocking on him way downfield, but he makes Curtis Martin make a move.
00:19:56Here it comes right here.
00:19:57See this here?
00:19:58There's Jackson with Sam Gash and he actually makes the play.
00:20:04Good hustle by Daniel Stubbs as well.
00:20:06The big lineman to get downfield.
00:20:0942-yard play.
00:20:11Mega.
00:20:12Inside the 25.
00:20:13Miami lead 17-14.
00:20:16The Patriots trying to take advantage of a highly questionable fumble call against this
00:20:21man, Abdul-Jabbar.
00:20:23Have it inside.
00:20:25The Dolphin 25 at the 23.
00:20:28Second down and five.
00:20:29Well, it turned the ball over four times today so far.
00:20:32We still have eight minutes to go in the third quarter.
00:20:35You're down 17-14.
00:20:37You're lucky.
00:20:39They only got three points out of four turnovers for the Miami Dolphins.
00:20:43Second and five.
00:20:45Second and five.
00:20:49There he works in again.
00:20:51That's it.
00:20:52Right on his gun coast.
00:20:55Touchdown!
00:20:56Big Ben brings it up for the fifth time this year.
00:21:17And New England repossesses the lead.
00:21:23Boy, when you have that much time to throw a football, you better be able to find somebody
00:21:27open.
00:21:27And Jimmy Johnson still burning inside on the ball that set up the drive.
00:21:37Vinatieri.
00:21:4021-17 New England.
00:21:4323 yards on the touchdown.
00:21:48Well, it's a good job for the Patriot.
00:21:50An excellent call.
00:21:52Drew Bledsoe moving to his right.
00:21:53Throws back across the field.
00:21:56To Ben Coates, who is wide open.
00:22:00He hustles for the extra couple yards and gets the touchdown.
00:22:03Bledsoe three for three on the drive.
00:22:0777 yards.
00:22:09The old Parcells Patriots enjoy a four-point advantage.
00:22:15New England leads 21-17 with one questionable turnover for New England.
00:22:21And they get seven points out of it.
00:22:24While New England's coughed it up four times and managed only three Miami points out of that.
00:22:30So, the Patriots opportunistic.
00:22:3277 yards and four quick plays for the lead.
00:22:37Irving Spikes.
00:22:39Check that.
00:22:40Charles Jordan.
00:22:42And Jordan draws a crowd of blue out at the 27-yard line.
00:22:47Mario Greer leading the way.
00:22:49Let's go back to the touchdown.
00:22:50Well, look at Ben Coates at the top of your screen.
00:22:52He's going to run what they call a flag pattern.
00:22:54A play action this way.
00:22:56But watch Lewis Oliver, number 25, his reaction.
00:22:59Most teams, when they fake this bootleg, they throw to the right.
00:23:04The Patriots do the opposite.
00:23:07They throw across the field, back to the left.
00:23:09That's the reason Ben Coates was wide open.
00:23:11Watch this, folks.
00:23:13You think Bledsoe like this little slap on a hiney?
00:23:15Whoops.
00:23:16No, that hurt.
00:23:16Moreno comes back gunning, and it's incomplete to Abdul-Jabbar.
00:23:26Sangapulitelli, the defensive tackle, the 300-pounder from San Diego State, has Marino wincing.
00:23:35You're for a defensive lineman playing against the Miami Dolphins and Dan Marino.
00:23:39It has to be so frustrating.
00:23:42You get through.
00:23:42You do an excellent job.
00:23:44You get a free shot at the quarterback, and Dan Marino always gets rid of the football.
00:23:48Hate to get on the officials, but he took more than one step before he hit Marino.
00:23:52They've had a tough day.
00:24:03That goal, Jabbar, out of the backfield.
00:24:06Nice open field tackle by Ted Johnson, the middle backer.
00:24:10Only four on the play.
00:24:14Johnson, Carlsbad, California.
00:24:16Grew up, went to high school very near where they had all those tragic fires just a week ago
00:24:21out near LaCosta.
00:24:22The only real chance that a linebacker has on a back like Abdul-Jabbar is Johnson,
00:24:27because as soon as he saw Abdul-Jabbar coming out of the backfield,
00:24:30he went directly towards him, and that's his man.
00:24:33He went after him and got him.
00:24:35Third and six.
00:24:40Miami three for nine on third down today.
00:24:44Well below their average.
00:24:45For the sidelines, any complaint intended for Charles Jordan.
00:24:53Scooter Magruder, an extra defensive back on the coverage.
00:24:57Punning team on for Jimmy Johnson.
00:25:02This is not what you talk about at halftime.
00:25:04The Miami Dolphins, they go in, they know they're going to get the ball back on the kick.
00:25:08They come out, three and out.
00:25:09They get the ball again, three and out.
00:25:11They make it just two away from the all-time record of eight touchdowns on country terms.
00:25:22New for a kick by Kidd for the 16th.
00:25:27And Megat doesn't get more than a couple of yards.
00:25:30Timeout, 7-0-4, remaining in the third.
00:25:34Back in New England with a reminder next Saturday at 4 Eastern on NBC.
00:25:40It's the EMC Skills Challenge.
00:25:43You'll see Arnold Palmer, the player of the year.
00:25:45The Varden Trophy winner, Tom Lehman, John Daly, Hale Irwin, and others.
00:25:49They'll drive, long and short game, bunker shots, putting, and the crucial trouble shot.
00:25:54That's next Saturday on NBC.
00:25:56Dave Megat for a couple to the 19-yard line.
00:26:00They call that one, Phil, they call that one area, the Maguires, the form of the trouble shot.
00:26:07The trouble shot?
00:26:07The Maguire, they call that.
00:26:09Uh-huh.
00:26:10I don't have trouble.
00:26:12I mean, my swing isn't pretty, but it gets the job done.
00:26:15Really?
00:26:15Yeah.
00:26:16It gets it done.
00:26:16Better statement.
00:26:17Second and eight.
00:26:19Into the flag.
00:26:19Complete to Troy Brown and Tim Jacobs there on the coverage.
00:26:25At the 26, it'll be third and two.
00:26:29Look at what the defense of Miami has allowed the opposing quarterback the last three games.
00:26:36And any time quarterbacks complete, this high a percentage of their pass,
00:26:40I don't care if they're throwing little dub passes, your defense is in trouble.
00:26:44Three straight games, the Miami defense just cannot stop the passing game.
00:26:49Third and a long one.
00:26:55Curtis Marker cut down at the 27, 27 and a half.
00:27:00Terrell Buckley who raced up from his corner position is going to be close enough to measure.
00:27:08Buckley with his sixth interception of the season earlier today.
00:27:15Oh, they gave him a good spot.
00:27:16It was really a good job of Curtis Martin taking the ball outside.
00:27:23Everything was covered inside.
00:27:25And Terrell Buckley just came flying up to make a good tackle.
00:27:32Now, my question here is, here's a first down.
00:27:34And you're only up by four points.
00:27:36And they were moving the ball with a hurry-up offense.
00:27:38They had no huddle.
00:27:39They were attacking.
00:27:40Do you stop attacking now?
00:27:43And you kind of, you know, when do you just say, okay, let's just try to run the ball a little bit.
00:27:48Let's get some stuff off the clock.
00:27:49Because this third quarter has lasted about an hour and a half, hasn't it?
00:27:53Ray Perkins making the calls upstairs.
00:27:55Well, Miami knows they can't stop the passing game, and they haven't.
00:28:16So, what do you do, Paul?
00:28:17They bring some pressure.
00:28:19This time they bring six players on defense.
00:28:23Make the quarterback.
00:28:25Make a decision.
00:28:26Tight coverage down the field.
00:28:27Drew Bledsoe has to throw the football before he's ready.
00:28:30And Calvin Jackson did an excellent job of staying close to the receiver.
00:28:33Five minutes, 47 seconds left in the third.
00:28:37To Jefferson.
00:28:39And he is at the 35-yard line.
00:28:42It'll be third down three.
00:28:43Jackson leading the charge with Wooden helping out.
00:28:49Bledsoe taking what they'll give him.
00:28:50And he's now 22 for 31.
00:28:53Just under 300 yards on the game.
00:28:57One touchdown, two interceptions.
00:28:59And he also fumbled once, while Marino looking for that first scoring throw.
00:29:03And if you go to throw the football a lot, you can't be concerned with those interceptions.
00:29:07And Bill Parcells told us yesterday he told Drew Bledsoe,
00:29:11I want you to be tenacious, throw the ball down the field, and take some chances.
00:29:18No result at all as Gash is drilled by Oliver.
00:29:22Lewis Oliver read it all away.
00:29:24No gain.
00:29:24This is what I thought they meant about an aggressive pass defense.
00:29:28It's what Lewis Oliver does here to Sam Gash.
00:29:31Lewis Oliver comes up the field.
00:29:32They just throw this little flick to the outside.
00:29:34And look at him.
00:29:35Bam.
00:29:35I mean, there was absolutely about a half-yard loss on the play.
00:29:40So Town Tupa comes in to putt.
00:29:43Former Penn State star O.J. McDuffie at the other end at the 16.
00:29:48No return into a 10-yard return.
00:30:10Otis Smith makes the tackle at the 20.
00:30:12A 54-yard punt.
00:30:14Tonight on Dateline.
00:30:18Trailing 21-17.
00:30:20Four minutes plus left in the third.
00:30:26And Bill Javala.
00:30:30For a couple.
00:30:32Mark Wheeler led the defensive attack.
00:30:34Well, the Miami Dolphins, when you have possessions in the second half,
00:30:40you take a look at what they've done with it.
00:30:41Take a look.
00:30:41Three plays.
00:30:42And here's the ones that you really want to take a look at in the middle.
00:30:45The three plays, five plays, one play and a fumble.
00:30:47And three plays again.
00:30:48You're putting the ball away.
00:30:49I mean, your offense isn't doing anything.
00:30:51You've got to keep this defense off the field.
00:30:54That's the one thing that Marino said to us.
00:30:55We've got to help the defense.
00:30:56We've got to move the ball and control it.
00:30:58That fumble came one play after Sean Woodson had intercepted at the New England 36.
00:31:07Only three more on the catch.
00:31:09As Malloy and Hitchcock wrap up Pritchett.
00:31:11Third down.
00:31:13And short six.
00:31:15You know, the guy, the only time you really mention this guy's name in his game,
00:31:20one of their leading receivers, OJ McDuffie.
00:31:22I mean, it's on punt returns.
00:31:23Has he caught a pass?
00:31:24One catch.
00:31:32For six yards.
00:31:34McDuffie is their third down receiver.
00:31:44Marino, lots of time.
00:31:46Has McDuffie open?
00:31:47And he has it with the 40-yard line.
00:31:50First down Miami.
00:31:51Well, boys, see, you've got to get the guy in the game.
00:31:55I called down to Dan.
00:31:56I said, look, you know, OJ McDuffie has been open.
00:31:58You haven't thrown the ball to him.
00:31:59So let's put him in motion.
00:32:00Send him out to the outside.
00:32:01He runs down through the seam.
00:32:04And a perfect pass.
00:32:05And again.
00:32:08Oh, you are.
00:32:10You are sagacious.
00:32:11No question about that.
00:32:12Yeah.
00:32:13Sagacious?
00:32:13Yeah.
00:32:14What is it?
00:32:14I don't know.
00:32:1541-yard line.
00:32:17Seriously.
00:32:17The wizard.
00:32:18Oh, you're wise.
00:32:19Your years make you very wise, Paul.
00:32:33Jimmy Hitchcock.
00:32:34What a game for Hitchcock, who's subbing for the injured Ricky Reynolds.
00:32:42This is a play where Dan Marino just overestimates his arm.
00:32:47What he tries to do again is throw that ball in a line drive to the outside
00:32:51and tries to get it over the defender before he turns around.
00:32:54But Jimmy Hitchcock, he's looking back at the quarterback the whole way.
00:32:58He has not fooled and makes an excellent interception.
00:33:01You know what I really like about this play is Willie Clay, he reads it right away.
00:33:05He's looking back at Marino.
00:33:06He gets over to even try to help.
00:33:08He doesn't have to because Hitchcock's got it.
00:33:10But on the left-hand side of the screen, you see Willie Clay coming in?
00:33:12He was there to help out if need be.
00:33:17So Hitchcock with his second interception of the season.
00:33:21And he'll stop him at the 10-yard line.
00:33:24So Marino intercepted for the first time today.
00:33:27It remains 21-17.
00:33:28Hitting the backfield as Curtis Martin.
00:33:33Dwight Hollier, a loss of a yard.
00:33:36Dan Marino never likes this to happen.
00:33:41Well, I think he knows it's not really the decision.
00:33:46He made a good decision on where to throw football, just what type of ball to throw.
00:33:49Should have thrown it higher and to the outside instead of throwing the line drive.
00:33:53And the win, Jim Gray talked about it at the start of the game.
00:33:57That factored in.
00:33:59Throw the ball up.
00:34:02That's a quickie to Sean Jefferson.
00:34:06Buckley on the coverage.
00:34:07Six yards on the play.
00:34:09To the 15, it's third and five.
00:34:10Second half.
00:34:14And this is third quarter.
00:34:15All these possessions.
00:34:16I mean, nine possessions in the quarter.
00:34:18We have a minute 18 left.
00:34:20Two turnovers a side.
00:34:21And I really do believe a lot of these turnovers today.
00:34:23The interception, especially the fumbles.
00:34:25But just because of the fact that it is cold, the ball is hard and slick,
00:34:29and it's just getting away from the players.
00:34:32Third and five.
00:34:35That's all.
00:34:36Pressured.
00:34:37Uncomplete.
00:34:39Through to Gash and Stewart there to cover.
00:34:42Michael Stewart.
00:34:43Yeah, they've gotten away from their game plan.
00:34:45I mean, before he was throwing the ball like curls in the middle of the field.
00:34:48He was throwing deep comebacks to players.
00:34:50Now he's throwing a little junk stuff.
00:34:52Well, what's happening, Paul, the last couple times, New England is guessing wrong.
00:34:56Miami's defense has changed up.
00:34:58That time they had three defensive linemen down, four linebackers in.
00:35:01They blitzed off of it.
00:35:02And I think it's confusing New England right now.
00:35:06Tupac will receive the snap at the goal line.
00:35:08McDuffie at the 37 of Miami.
00:35:16What a snap.
00:35:19Tupac.
00:35:21Short kick at third.
00:35:22That's McDuffie at the 41-yard line.
00:35:2444 on the punt.
00:35:28Well, there's a turnover that didn't hurt Marino.
00:35:33In fact, they get the ball back in very, very good field position.
00:35:37We didn't.
00:35:38It's interesting that we haven't really talked about Marino's injury.
00:35:42Here's a man that had a broken ankle just five, six weeks ago.
00:35:46And here operating as if, well, obviously it didn't catch our attention.
00:35:50He is well protected.
00:35:51Well, he is.
00:35:52Yeah, he is very well protected.
00:35:53That body has every piece of equipment on it to lead makes.
00:35:56And look at his.
00:35:57We had a little shot there.
00:35:58We'll see it later of his right foot.
00:36:00The special shoe he wears now to protect that right ankle.
00:36:04You know, you're absolutely right, Phil.
00:36:13If you just take a look.
00:36:14I don't understand how he moves with all the padding he has.
00:36:16I'll tell you, he can move around still very well.
00:36:18But you can see he has the hip pads in.
00:36:20He has a little pad in the back because last year he hurt his.
00:36:24Well, he fell on his rear end and he hurt it pretty bad.
00:36:26He has two braces on one brace on each knee.
00:36:29And then in the right ankle, look at that big boot he has on.
00:36:32And he still has a little bit of a limp.
00:36:34But Dan Marino, he's wise.
00:36:36He wears everything he can to protect himself.
00:36:39And he's got nothing on that right arm.
00:36:41That's right.
00:36:42That's right.
00:36:43And comes that incomplete to Abdul-Jabbar.
00:36:46He'll bring up the third down inside.
00:36:48Beginning of his game.
00:36:49Does he still have that pouch on?
00:36:51He had a hand warmer, did they call it, on Marino.
00:36:54He doesn't wear that.
00:36:54I thought maybe he might have had a sandwich or something in there
00:36:57because he spends a lot of time back there by himself.
00:36:59You advised him.
00:37:01That's what you do.
00:37:03No, he wouldn't keep a sandwich in there.
00:37:05That would be gone.
00:37:06That would be gone.
00:37:11Ty Law limped off.
00:37:13And Mike Magruder, number 27, replaces him at corner.
00:37:16So Marino looks at two backup corners.
00:37:19And Hitchcock and Magruder.
00:37:20Covered by Otis Smith, the former Eagle.
00:37:37You know, there's something that surprised me about this.
00:37:39Now, Dan Marino standing back there all by himself,
00:37:42really has all the time in the world to throw the ball.
00:37:43And look at these guys.
00:37:44They're really not coming back to him.
00:37:46And Hill is the only one that makes an attempt to come back,
00:37:49but it's only a couple yards when he sees the ball in the air.
00:37:51But it was surprising to me because most of these receivers,
00:37:54I know you're able to turn and run, Phil,
00:37:56but they should come back and help Marino.
00:37:58Well, let's be honest.
00:37:58How often do they see Dan Marino scramble out of the pocket
00:38:01and they don't get a chance to practice that drill too often?
00:38:04Final play of the third quarter.
00:38:06Kid, a bit unlucky, has to kick it into the wind.
00:38:09Negative to 21.
00:38:11A five-yard return.
00:38:14You're watching the NFL on NBC.
00:38:16We'll be back after these messages from your local station.
00:38:19With Phil Simms, Paul McGuire, and Jim Gray to Kimberg,
00:38:29welcome back to Foxborough.
00:38:30Some 59,000-plus.
00:38:33And watch the terrific game, 21-17 New England.
00:38:38As Jimmy Johnson said, this will define our season.
00:38:41We need two wins this week.
00:38:43Next week against Indy, the show will be a playoff team.
00:38:46And New England trying to create some distance.
00:38:48Yes, Indianapolis has already lost.
00:38:51Let's spread it around.
00:38:54Sam Gash has interfered with Chris Singleton there too soon.
00:39:04Pass interference.
00:39:05Number 55 of the defense.
00:39:08First down.
00:39:08Chris Singleton, you know, he's really caught in a catch-22.
00:39:12Here he is.
00:39:12Here comes the ball.
00:39:13And when the ball is thrown, he is there just a little bit too soon.
00:39:16And look at it, he's going through the receiver, which is gashed to the ball.
00:39:20And he hits him.
00:39:21Good goal.
00:39:23Just a penalty of a handful of yards out to the 27.
00:39:28Bledsoe, looking underneath, complete.
00:39:33Boy, does he have accelerators.
00:39:35Terry Glenn, just a little delay.
00:39:37And he sprints for 14 more before Sean Wooden can get him.
00:39:41And Drew Bledsoe has used nine different receivers in this game.
00:39:46He's spread it around.
00:39:48He's very effectively.
00:39:51Brown, Glenn, now Martin.
00:39:53And here's the payoff is touchdown to Ben Coates.
00:39:59Well, that's the key to this offense, the fact that in years past,
00:40:03it was dropped back and throw it to Ben Coates.
00:40:05Now Drew Bledsoe can drop back and throw it to one of seven or eight good pass receivers.
00:40:10As Martin slowed down in the backfield and loses a yard.
00:40:13Interestingly, and when you look at the skill positions for New England with Byers and Coates now
00:40:19and those wide receivers, Jefferson and Glenn, and then the running backs as well,
00:40:25and Bledsoe, you'd say this should be the best offense in the AFC East.
00:40:29But someone argues that it is not, and that was Bill Parcells.
00:40:32Well, he thinks the New York Jets are the best offense in the AFC East.
00:40:37And he says, and he's don't even take my word for it.
00:40:39Just look it up.
00:40:40Yards, he's talking first downs, a lot of stats.
00:40:43Favor the New York Jets, but my argument is the New York Jets are doing a lot of that
00:40:48when they're way behind and the games are over to get some of those stats.
00:40:51But I think that the New York Jets are going to decide who wins the AFC East
00:40:55because they're going to beat someone going down the second half of the season.
00:40:59Well, that's right.
00:40:59And the one thing he was right about, Bill Parcells,
00:41:02is that New York Jets do have some fine, skilled players on offense.
00:41:06So there's going to be a day when their defense puts it together.
00:41:09They come out there, and that offense clicks.
00:41:11And, you know, you hope you're not the team that's on the bad end of it.
00:41:16You know, the one thing about this Miami team, when you look at it,
00:41:25they are, yeah, coming into this game four and four, Phil.
00:41:27But they've only lost one game in their division, and that's to Indianapolis.
00:41:32So if they can come out of here, that's why this game is so important to Miami,
00:41:36and next week against Indy, which will knock them off twice.
00:41:39They get even with Indy.
00:41:41But they could be really set in their division if they can win the next two games,
00:41:44this one and the one after.
00:41:45And you heard Marino on the NFL on NBC earlier today say that these are the two games
00:41:53that will determine whether or not we're a factor or whether we just play out the season.
00:41:5821-17 New England.
00:42:012-foot.
00:42:04Skies win.
00:42:05Frosty night, and the fair catch by McDuffie at the 17.
00:42:1144 on the punt.
00:42:1313-plus remain.
00:42:18And we welcome you back.
00:42:19Dan Marino, this is his 192nd game as a Dolphin.
00:42:24That's the club record.
00:42:25Bob Kuchenberg played 190.
00:42:28He needs that many more.
00:42:30162 passing yards for 50,000.
00:42:35No one close.
00:42:38Trailing by four.
00:42:41It's Abdul-Jabbar turning the point.
00:42:44Gets him.
00:42:45Oh, he was one man away from going the distance.
00:42:48Out of bounds at the 23.
00:42:50A gain of 11.
00:42:51You know what I like about him, Phil?
00:42:53The decisions he makes with the ball.
00:42:55Watch.
00:42:55I mean, he gets some good blocking up front.
00:42:58But watch the decisions he makes.
00:43:00Here he comes to the outside.
00:43:01Now watch how quick he turns this.
00:43:03Now, I've got to get upfield and take what I can get.
00:43:06You're right, Dick.
00:43:08One play away from touchdown.
00:43:13He had 115 yards in game one down in Miami against New England.
00:43:17Over the century mark again.
00:43:19He's down to the 25.
00:43:24So we are seeing two outstanding rookies in this game.
00:43:28Kareem Abdul-Jabbar rushing for over 100 for Miami.
00:43:31And on the other side, the wide receiver for the New England Patriots, Terry Glenn, who has 10 catches.
00:43:37He's over 100 yards receiving.
00:43:39Well, Abdul-Jabbar, what I like about him, and he reminds me of Emmitt Smith in a way.
00:43:45He makes a decision.
00:43:46He does it right away.
00:43:47And he's always going forward.
00:43:49Never east to west.
00:43:50He is a north-south runner.
00:43:52Second and eight.
00:43:53Marino comes into the sideline.
00:43:56Big catch.
00:43:57Rolling is Charles Jordan to the sidelines.
00:44:00First down at the 35.
00:44:01Mike Magruder on the coverage.
00:44:04Well, Dan Marino on his way to throwing for 50,000 yards and still has that good arm.
00:44:09The hardest throw a quarterback can make is that 10-yard speed out cut by a receiver.
00:44:15Look at the hop, and Dan Marino gets that body behind almost every single throw.
00:44:19That's the reason why he's so accurate.
00:44:23The man with the perfect fence.
00:44:26Now goes Jabbar.
00:44:27Oh, he hits that line of scrimmage at full speed.
00:44:30Let's go to Greg Gumbel in New York for an update.
00:44:34All right, Dick.
00:44:34In Seattle, Houston and the Seahawks tied at nine.
00:44:37Steve McNair, sideline pass to Chris Sanders.
00:44:40Watch what he does to Selwyn Jones on the sidelines.
00:44:43Can't let him get away like that.
00:44:44See you later.
00:44:4565-yard touchdown.
00:44:48And with the extra point, Houston on top of Seattle now.
00:44:5116-9, about eight minutes to play in regulation.
00:44:53Dick?
00:44:54All right, Greg.
00:44:55Can you imagine two years ago at Ohio State, they had Sanders, Galloway, and this kid, Glenn?
00:45:01And they lost it again.
00:45:03Underneath.
00:45:04Good catch by Irving Spikes.
00:45:07And Spikes runs it into New England territory to the 45, a 19-yard play.
00:45:13Well, you know, we talk about Bledsoe spreading the ball around.
00:45:16Marino can spread it around.
00:45:17Look, he got Spikes in the backfield.
00:45:19Nobody comes up, so Spikes is free.
00:45:21Everybody's covered.
00:45:21He just dumps it over the middle.
00:45:23Now Spikes just takes off.
00:45:24And Dan Marino makes his decision so fast.
00:45:27We talk about why he's so hard to sack.
00:45:30And look at this.
00:45:31Look at the sacks by the other quarterbacks.
00:45:33Bernie and Craig Erickson.
00:45:3411-6.
00:45:36Coming in today, Dan Marino has sacked three times all year.
00:45:39Spikes.
00:45:41Part of the backfield.
00:45:43William McGinnis there to stop him with Todd Collins following up.
00:45:49And one of the, you know, a couple reasons why you cannot sack Dan Marino.
00:45:54One, he makes a decision so fast.
00:45:56He gets rid of it so fast.
00:45:58But we heard Richmond Webb talking about it to us yesterday.
00:46:00He just has great presence in the pocket.
00:46:03He always knows when to step up to buy himself that extra half second,
00:46:07which enables him to get the ball down the field.
00:46:10Less than 10 minutes to go.
00:46:1221-17, New England.
00:46:14Second and a dozen.
00:46:21Bought by Lamar Thomas.
00:46:23And that's close to a first down at the Patriots 35.
00:46:27Phil, they sold the ranch on this play.
00:46:29New England sent everybody.
00:46:31They sent everybody, but Miami was not confused.
00:46:34They pick up the blitz and watch out fast.
00:46:36Dan Marino gets rid of the football.
00:46:39Two seconds.
00:46:40The ball is gone.
00:46:41Look at the safeties for the New England Patriots.
00:46:43The blitz, ball out.
00:46:47Jimmy Hitchcock, if he does not make the tackle up the top, it's a touchdown.
00:46:52Third and less than a yard.
00:46:58Two men in motion.
00:46:59So that will cost Miami a first down.
00:47:02Abdul-Jabbar easily with a first down.
00:47:05Ted Johnson made the tackle, but two Dolphins in motion.
00:47:08They tried to reset.
00:47:12I thought maybe the referee or the official would give them the benefit of the doubt.
00:47:16It looked like they reset, but maybe it wasn't for one full count.
00:47:20Robert Wilson is the guy, number 49, that gets moving.
00:47:23Then he gets moving forward.
00:47:24Wilson, 49, comes out.
00:47:29Used in short yardage.
00:47:33255-pound fullback.
00:47:35There's two guys moving at the same time.
00:47:38The wide receiver.
00:47:39Watch Robert Wilson, the fullback.
00:47:41They're both moving, but then watch them reset.
00:47:44They know they've made a mistake.
00:47:46They reset.
00:47:46Apparently, the referee judging not a full second.
00:47:52Three of 11 on third down is Marino.
00:47:57Incomplete.
00:47:57Good coverage again by the Patriots.
00:48:00They went to Jordan, and Otis Smith picked up as a free agent.
00:48:07Makes the play.
00:48:08I'm going to tell you, you're absolutely correct, Dick.
00:48:10There wasn't one man open.
00:48:11Marino tries to force this ball in, this perfect pass inside.
00:48:15He tries to force inside.
00:48:17It just doesn't work.
00:48:18That's Otis Smith, and here's Marino right from the get-go.
00:48:21He's looking, he's looking.
00:48:24And as he told us yesterday, if you're going to be a player in this league,
00:48:28you've got to throw passes when your men are covered.
00:48:30But again, he threw that incomplete pass, and he was looking and talking to his receiver.
00:48:36Let's it go, and it is saved by the Dolphins.
00:48:40A good play made by Terrell Buckley.
00:48:42He batted it back, and Robert Bailey covers.
00:48:45It'll be the two-yard line for Bledsoe when we return.
00:48:51On that last incompletion, Dan Marino wanted Charles Jordan to keep coming.
00:48:54Look at him.
00:48:56Charles Jordan says,
00:48:57Oh, it's it can't fall.
00:49:00Blacks all over the field as Bledsoe throws from his own end zone.
00:49:05Intended for Ben Coates.
00:49:07All year on the coverage.
00:49:08That is a bad scene with the Marino.
00:49:15Yeah, that was good.
00:49:16Well, we didn't get to see it.
00:49:17Charles Jordan was, he pats himself on the chest.
00:49:20Offside.
00:49:20On the offense.
00:49:22Lined up.
00:49:23In the neutral zone.
00:49:24Penalty is declined.
00:49:28Second down.
00:49:29Watch Charles Jordan, number 88.
00:49:30He goes, Oh, yeah, my fault, Dan.
00:49:32See, I'm telling you about Marino.
00:49:34Marino was so positive.
00:49:35He said to Jordan,
00:49:36It was positively your fault.
00:49:38You know, you're positively right.
00:49:39It wasn't my fault.
00:49:40Jordan goes,
00:49:41Oh, he's told him for almost 50,000.
00:49:42I think I'll let him tell me what's right and wrong.
00:49:44If I argue with him,
00:49:45he's not going to throw me the ball anymore.
00:49:46Good point.
00:49:47The general is always right.
00:49:50Second and ten as the Patriots decline the penalty.
00:49:55From his end zone again,
00:49:57let's go.
00:49:57He's under the net complete.
00:49:59He fires.
00:50:02Miami comes up with the ball,
00:50:04but the official says the play was dead.
00:50:0613-yard game.
00:50:10Lewis Oliver and Chris Singleton.
00:50:13Singleton came out of there with the ball.
00:50:17Drew Bledsoe from their own end zone
00:50:20throwing the ball down the middle of the field.
00:50:23A lot of bad things can happen
00:50:24down the middle of the field,
00:50:26especially at your own end.
00:50:28It looked like Byers had lost the ball
00:50:30down around his knees.
00:50:34First down to Bledsoe.
00:50:36To Coach.
00:50:37That's a tackle.
00:50:38Big man can run.
00:50:44And Coach, touchdown!
00:50:4784 yards!
00:50:50Oh, my!
00:50:52Oh, my!
00:50:52What a heads up play
00:51:21They both won the same page
00:51:26It was a blitz
00:51:27The Patriots could not pick it up
00:51:29He adjusted his route
00:51:31He adjusted his feet
00:51:33I'll tell you, he took up
00:51:34He got all that weight going forward
00:51:37His legs had to keep up with it
00:51:39And a military accident
00:51:42And the Patriots
00:51:43Lead 28-17
00:51:45It appeared that Keith Byers
00:51:47Might have thrown a key block downfield
00:51:49Drew Bledsoe sees the blitz
00:51:52Does an excellent job of getting rid of the football
00:51:54And look, Keith Byers coming back
00:51:56Making a good block
00:51:57Ben Coates
00:52:02Showing the speed he has
00:52:04In the tight end position
00:52:05For Drew Bledsoe
00:52:09His longest ever touchdown pass
00:52:11By a bunch
00:52:1284 yards to Ben Coates
00:52:14And a former Dolphin was a key player
00:52:17But blocked by Byers
00:52:18To spring him loose
00:52:20That breaks Bledsoe's longest
00:52:23By 22 yards
00:52:24Previous was a 62-yarder to Coates
00:52:27Three plays, 98 yards
00:52:33For the Patriots
00:52:34To open the lead
00:52:35Vinatieri
00:52:36Plenty of time left
00:52:37Midpoint
00:52:38Fourth quarter
00:52:39Charles Jordan
00:52:40And he's out across the 30-yard line
00:52:45Well, you want the Dolphins to be aggressive on defense
00:52:48They were this time
00:52:49They blitz
00:52:50And they get burned
00:52:52Ben Coates up top
00:52:53Is going to break his round off
00:52:54Watch the blitzers by Miami
00:52:56The secondary knows
00:52:59They can't pick it up
00:52:59They're waiting for the adjustment
00:53:01They come up too fast
00:53:02Ben Coates, when he stops
00:53:04They overrun him
00:53:05And Keith Byers
00:53:06Coming back
00:53:06And making a block
00:53:08The spring being coach
00:53:08For the touchdown
00:53:09Watch, you see
00:53:10Lewis Oliver
00:53:10Right there
00:53:11Number 25
00:53:11He would possibly
00:53:12Catch Ben Coates
00:53:13But Keith Byers
00:53:14The other tight end
00:53:15Coming back
00:53:16To help his buddy
00:53:17Touchdown
00:53:19That left only
00:53:20Shane Burton
00:53:21The lineman
00:53:21To chase Coates
00:53:22And the Patriots
00:53:27Appear to have it again
00:53:28As Willie McGinnis
00:53:29Made the sack
00:53:30And the fumble
00:53:31The Patriot offense
00:53:45Coming out
00:53:46And making big plays
00:53:47Has put Miami's offense
00:53:49In a tough situation
00:53:50Where they have to pass
00:53:52To football
00:53:53And now
00:53:55In these situations
00:53:56The New England pass rush
00:53:58Can come alive
00:53:59And play nothing but pass
00:54:01Well what happens
00:54:01Is watch Marina
00:54:02He's got Webb on that side
00:54:04So you've got all the confidence
00:54:05Of the world
00:54:06On your backside
00:54:06He just waited too long
00:54:08And held it
00:54:08McGinnis never quit
00:54:09Got around Webb
00:54:11And made the play
00:54:12Mark Wheeler
00:54:14Recovered the fumble
00:54:15But it was McGinnis
00:54:16Making the play
00:54:17And it was
00:54:17Rocked up
00:54:19By Aaron Jones
00:54:21Who played here
00:54:24With the Patriots
00:54:25A couple of years
00:54:26I think this is
00:54:27Really Marino's fault
00:54:28Because Dan Marino
00:54:29Is standing back there
00:54:30Waiting so long
00:54:31Webb pushes to the outside
00:54:32Parmely gets in Webb's way
00:54:34McGinnis never quits
00:54:35And he comes through
00:54:36Not only
00:54:37Does he knock the ball
00:54:38Almost got the fumble
00:54:39Or he did get the fumble
00:54:40McGinnis was there
00:54:42And Al Grohl
00:54:42The defensive coordinator
00:54:44Tells him
00:54:46This is what you get
00:54:46When you keep hustling
00:54:48You never know
00:54:48What can happen
00:54:49On any given play
00:54:50Willie McGinnis
00:54:51With his hustle
00:54:52Gets around
00:54:53And causes the fumble
00:54:54He was picked
00:54:55As the number one
00:54:55Out of Southern California
00:54:56With
00:54:57Big biography
00:55:00In college
00:55:00Now he's starting
00:55:01To produce here
00:55:02Another interference call
00:55:06Against Lewis Oliver
00:55:07This time
00:55:08Against John Burke
00:55:09The tight end
00:55:10What Lewis Oliver
00:55:13Is saying right there
00:55:15Now he's on
00:55:15Burke's back
00:55:16But what Oliver is saying
00:55:17I'm going for the ball
00:55:18And I tripped up
00:55:19But that doesn't
00:55:21Make any difference
00:55:22He hit the man
00:55:22You can go through
00:55:24The man to the ball
00:55:25If you only hit the ball
00:55:26But you can't hit the man
00:55:27Going through
00:55:28Well that wasn't
00:55:29Incidental tripping
00:55:30If that's what he's asking
00:55:31That's what he was saying
00:55:32He said like
00:55:32That's what Oliver is saying
00:55:33Lewis Oliver is saying
00:55:34Look at I'm tripping
00:55:35But he's not
00:55:36He's on his back
00:55:36And he's got his arm
00:55:37Around him
00:55:38Interference call
00:55:40Puts the ball
00:55:40At the 11 yard line
00:55:42No question about this
00:55:43That was the same play
00:55:44They threw to Ben
00:55:45Coach for the touchdown
00:55:46Early in the game
00:55:47They came back with it
00:55:48Lewis Oliver
00:55:49Rated right
00:55:49Just a little too anxious
00:55:5128-17 New England here
00:56:00Let's go to New York
00:56:00For an update
00:56:01Alright Dick
00:56:04At Minnesota
00:56:04Kansas City's Greg Hill
00:56:06Watch him turn the corner here
00:56:07And from 17 yards out
00:56:09Goes into the end zone
00:56:11Then after an interception
00:56:12He added a 10 yard touchdown
00:56:14Minnesota started 4-0
00:56:16They're now looking at
00:56:17Their fourth loss
00:56:18In five games
00:56:18They trail 21-0
00:56:20Three minutes to play
00:56:20Dick
00:56:21That's a big game
00:56:23For Marty Schottenheimer's
00:56:24Chiefs
00:56:25As Tim Bowens
00:56:26A big defensive tackle
00:56:28Of the Miami Dolphins
00:56:30Injured on that last play
00:56:31What's at stake here
00:56:35In the AFC East
00:56:37Miami needing a win
00:56:39To get into the thick
00:56:40Of the battle
00:56:40New England
00:56:41With a victory today
00:56:43Would then be tied
00:56:44With Buffalo
00:56:44Atop the division
00:56:46At 6-3
00:56:47Indy lost earlier
00:56:48Would fall a game back
00:56:49And for Miami
00:56:50It would push them
00:56:51Two behind the leaders
00:56:52Well Jimmy Johnson
00:56:55He didn't avoid the issue
00:56:57Coming into this week
00:56:58He says
00:56:58These next two games
00:57:00Will determine our season
00:57:01If things continue
00:57:03To go where they are today
00:57:04He's going to have to rethink
00:57:06And give his team
00:57:08Some hope somehow
00:57:09And tell them we can still get in
00:57:11We've got to win this week
00:57:12And somewhere down the line
00:57:13Trying to make up some ground
00:57:14Tim Bowens is the guy
00:57:19That's down
00:57:19And we're going to see
00:57:23What happens to him here
00:57:24He's right in the middle
00:57:24He puts his arm in
00:57:26On Curtis Martin
00:57:27And his own man
00:57:28Hits his arm
00:57:29And that's what he's holding
00:57:29That's one of those
00:57:31Hyper-extended elbow
00:57:32But you know
00:57:34The thing about is
00:57:35When you come out
00:57:36In the beginning of the season
00:57:37One of the things
00:57:38Your objective
00:57:40Your first objective
00:57:40You've got to win our division
00:57:42We have to win in our division
00:57:43And win our division
00:57:44Actually again
00:57:45I'll repeat that
00:57:46Four and four
00:57:46Jimmy Johnson
00:57:47And the Miami Dolphins
00:57:48Were in a great position
00:57:49Because they had only lost
00:57:50One game in their division
00:57:51And that was to Indy
00:57:52Drew Bledsoe
00:57:56Second down and nine
00:57:57At the ten yard line
00:57:58Four yardage
00:58:05By the way
00:58:08Drew Bledsoe
00:58:08Is just a handful
00:58:10Of yards away
00:58:10From his best ever game
00:58:12Remember that Minnesota game
00:58:14Where he threw the ball
00:58:14Seventy times
00:58:15A couple of years ago
00:58:16Forty-five completions
00:58:18Four hundred twenty-six yards
00:58:19He has four hundred fourteen
00:58:21Against Miami
00:58:22Today
00:58:23And there's the total
00:58:25By quarter
00:58:26Started and has just progressed
00:58:28Through the course of the game
00:58:30That's the big penalty
00:58:40When they grab and twist
00:58:41Your head
00:58:42And they don't let go
00:58:43That's the fifteen yard
00:58:44But here of course
00:58:45Is half the distance
00:58:46To the goal line
00:58:47Gives the Patriots
00:58:49A first and goal
00:58:51At the five
00:58:53Leading
00:58:54Twenty-eight
00:58:55The
00:58:55Twenty-eight yard line
00:58:58Of the Patriots
00:59:00And then a
00:59:01Controversial fumble
00:59:03That has really turned
00:59:04The game around
00:59:05When the Patriots
00:59:06Recovered a
00:59:07Questionable fumble
00:59:08It's a touchdown
00:59:11Zongach
00:59:13It's a third touchdown
00:59:26Of the game
00:59:27This time
00:59:27To the fullback
00:59:29Who scores for the first time
00:59:31This year
00:59:32It's like throwing
00:59:34Throwing a fullback
00:59:34A bone
00:59:35You know
00:59:35He blocks all the time
00:59:36He's a guy that stands back
00:59:37He clobbers people
00:59:39Sam Gash
00:59:40You know
00:59:40He carries the ball
00:59:41Once in a while
00:59:42He may get it
00:59:43So why
00:59:44And who covers him
00:59:45Really covers him
00:59:46He's wide open
00:59:47For the touchdown
00:59:48Minoteri's extra point
00:59:51Thirty-five
00:59:54Seventeen
00:59:55Drew's saying
00:59:59Don't hit me again
01:00:00Coach
01:00:00Yeah
01:00:00I know you like it
01:00:01Don't hit me
01:00:01Well first and goal
01:00:03In the five yard line
01:00:04You throw a play action fake
01:00:06At the defense
01:00:08When you're ahead
01:00:08It usually is going to be
01:00:09Wide open
01:00:10Well he's going to slap somebody
01:00:12Yeah
01:00:13Get out of the way
01:00:15The coach is happy
01:00:16Back in New England
01:00:20And a reminder
01:00:21That we're running a little late here
01:00:22And our seven o'clock programming
01:00:23Will begin right after
01:00:25The ball game
01:00:26Including Dateline Sunday
01:00:27Jane Pauley
01:00:27Is going to be talking
01:00:28With Michael Jordan
01:00:30You'll see
01:00:30The comedies
01:00:32Third Rock from the Sun
01:00:33And Boston Common
01:00:34And Jim Carrey
01:00:34Stars in Ace Ventura
01:00:36Pet Detective
01:00:37Dan Marino's in that as well
01:00:39Viewers in the west coast
01:00:40To coast
01:00:40Will see that
01:00:41At their regularly scheduled times
01:00:43Five forty-seven left
01:00:46It's a miracle time now
01:00:49For Marino
01:00:50And Miami
01:00:51Spice
01:00:53Still on his feet
01:00:57What an effort
01:00:58And out to the thirty-five yard line
01:01:01What a weekend
01:01:03For fans in Boston
01:01:04To cheer
01:01:05Great sports heroes
01:01:07That come to visit
01:01:08Michael Jordan
01:01:09Was here Friday night
01:01:10As the Bulls won
01:01:12And the great one
01:01:13Wayne Gretzky
01:01:13For the Rangers
01:01:14Against the Bruins
01:01:15Last night
01:01:15And Dan Marino
01:01:16On Sunday
01:01:17If you had that trifecta
01:01:18As a fan
01:01:19Those tickets
01:01:19Those games
01:01:20And I'm sure
01:01:21We could find many here
01:01:22At Foxborough tonight
01:01:23What a weekend
01:01:24Yeah and if we had room
01:01:25For one more picture
01:01:26We had Phil Simms here
01:01:27On his birthday
01:01:28Yeah right
01:01:29Which would have been
01:01:29Just a joy for everyone
01:01:31How old are you anyway
01:01:33I can't eat another piece
01:01:34Of birthday
01:01:35How many kicks
01:01:36Does he get on
01:01:37I don't know
01:01:38You know don't do dumb things
01:02:01You're just trying to get
01:02:03Into a ball game
01:02:03And he hits Ray
01:02:05Terry Ray
01:02:06When he's coming up
01:02:07Off the ground
01:02:08There's just no reason for it
01:02:10That's better
01:02:10Like conduct
01:02:11You bet
01:02:11Number 85
01:02:12Miami 15
01:02:14You know
01:02:16You don't have that look
01:02:17On your face
01:02:18Because you did it
01:02:18Take a look
01:02:19What Lamar Thomas does
01:02:20Now there's Ray
01:02:21He hits him
01:02:21Alright now you're down
01:02:22But he doesn't leave it there
01:02:23He goes back in
01:02:24And hits him again
01:02:25And that's when
01:02:26He threw the flag
01:02:27Still a first down
01:02:29Even with a 15 yard penalty
01:02:31Takes it back to the 48
01:02:32See if you've got to hit
01:02:35Someone like that
01:02:35Go up and get
01:02:36Willie McGinnis
01:02:36Hit him
01:02:37And then he'll throw you
01:02:39Into the stadium
01:02:40Triple right for Marino
01:02:43Dumps it off to the left
01:02:50And a good job
01:02:53By Bernie Parmelee
01:02:54Tackled by McGinnis
01:02:56Inside the 40
01:02:57Another Miami first down
01:02:59And Marino
01:03:01Racking up some
01:03:02Passing yards here
01:03:03In the fourth quarter
01:03:04As he's
01:03:05Less than 100 away
01:03:06From
01:03:0750,000
01:03:08In his great career
01:03:09Diving try by McDuffie
01:03:15But covered by Reynolds
01:03:16Flag down
01:03:17That's where the
01:03:21Little holding deal
01:03:22Yes
01:03:27Illegal use of hands
01:03:28Number 69
01:03:30Jam to the head
01:03:3110 yards
01:03:32Jam to the head
01:03:33That's
01:03:34You know
01:03:35When you looked at Miami
01:03:37In this game
01:03:37And they came out
01:03:38With Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
01:03:39Running the ball
01:03:39And they really had
01:03:40Control of what
01:03:41They were doing
01:03:42And you made the point
01:03:43Yeah go ahead
01:03:44They're going to run
01:03:44The ball for a while
01:03:45Let's go ahead and run it
01:03:46The guy you really
01:03:47Have to stop is Marino
01:03:48And then I really
01:03:50I really believe
01:03:51That fumble
01:03:51That was not a fumble
01:03:52Turned this whole game
01:03:54Around in New England's
01:03:55Favor
01:03:56And it's been all
01:03:56Downhill for Miami
01:03:57Since
01:03:58And we'll take
01:03:59Another look at that
01:04:00Bill Jabbar
01:04:01Was clearly down
01:04:02After Miami
01:04:04Had intercepted
01:04:05A Bledsoe pass
01:04:06Deep to New England
01:04:07Territory
01:04:08Underneath
01:04:09The look is
01:04:10Of Marino's
01:04:11Pass was deflected
01:04:12Or his arm hit
01:04:13As he went for
01:04:13McDuffie
01:04:14Marino now
01:04:17Is 383 yards
01:04:20Away from
01:04:2150,000
01:04:22You can see
01:04:24The blitz
01:04:24By the
01:04:25New England Patriots
01:04:26And Ricky Reynolds
01:04:27Number 21
01:04:28And Magruder
01:04:29They both got a piece of it
01:04:30They do a good job
01:04:31Once they see
01:04:32Dan Marino
01:04:32Raise his arms
01:04:33The defender
01:04:33Go ahead and jump
01:04:34Try to get in his way
01:04:35That's the one thing
01:04:37You try to do to Marino
01:04:37Most people know
01:04:38You can't sack him
01:04:39I mean you can
01:04:40But it's almost impossible
01:04:41What you want to do
01:04:42With Marino
01:04:42Is make him hurry the ball
01:04:44And Ernie Coates
01:04:45Has the same thing
01:04:46You've got to put pressure
01:04:47Up the middle
01:04:47Get in his face
01:04:48Good patience there
01:04:52And that is
01:04:52Charles Jordan
01:04:54As receiver drops the ball
01:04:55Another update
01:04:56Back to New York
01:04:57Dick look at the ending
01:05:00In Houston
01:05:01And the Seattle Seahawks
01:05:03On the verge of a
01:05:0423-16 win
01:05:05That is now a final
01:05:07In the Kingdome
01:05:08Dick
01:05:08Big plays
01:05:10In the final seconds
01:05:11Today
01:05:12The Seattle Seahawks
01:05:13Are definitely
01:05:14The cardiac kids
01:05:15The last few weeks
01:05:16Third down and 10
01:05:19Check that 20
01:05:20After the penalty
01:05:22Marino just does
01:05:25Hurry that one away
01:05:25And tackled immediately
01:05:26As McDuffie
01:05:27So very little yardage
01:05:28At the 46
01:05:29We want to remind you
01:05:30That coming up
01:05:31On Dateline
01:05:32Michael Jordan
01:05:33And Mike Dick
01:05:34On third rock
01:05:35From the sun
01:05:36And Shelley Long
01:05:36As a guest on
01:05:37Boston Common
01:05:38And we welcome
01:05:41Those of you
01:05:42Who have seen
01:05:43Seattle's
01:05:43Dramatic victory
01:05:4523-16
01:05:46Against the Houston Oilers
01:05:48Miami's
01:05:49Jimmy Johnson
01:05:50Led 17-14
01:05:52Earlier in this half
01:05:53Bill Parcells
01:05:55Got a gift call
01:05:56A fumble
01:05:57That wasn't a fumble
01:05:58New England
01:05:59Stopped a Miami drive
01:06:00And since that point
01:06:01It's been all Patriots
01:06:0235-17
01:06:03This is a fourth
01:06:05And long
01:06:06For Marino
01:06:07Scrambling
01:06:08And down
01:06:08And goes
01:06:09McGinnis
01:06:10Gets him again
01:06:11What a game
01:06:12For Willie McGinnis
01:06:13Persistence pays off
01:06:21Willie McGinnis
01:06:22Sacked Marino
01:06:23In the last series
01:06:24Of downs
01:06:25Knocked the ball out
01:06:26Made him fumble
01:06:27And here he comes again
01:06:28And when you don't quit
01:06:30And you just keep coming
01:06:31And it's a little easier
01:06:32When you're up
01:06:3335-17
01:06:34To keep coming
01:06:34Yeah a lot easier
01:06:35It is
01:06:36But
01:06:36But what happens is
01:06:38Willie McGinnis up top
01:06:40Is just going to keep hustling
01:06:43Actually he was down
01:06:46At the bottom of the screen
01:06:47And it's fourth and 20
01:06:49And what happens is
01:06:50Miami's trying to get
01:06:51Marino outside the pocket
01:06:52To buy some extra time
01:06:54To throw the ball
01:06:54Down the field
01:06:55To pick up the 20 yards
01:06:56McGinnis
01:06:58Eight tackles
01:07:00Two sacks
01:07:01Forced to fumble
01:07:01You know
01:07:02Has seven sacks on the year
01:07:03He leads the Pats
01:07:05Two forced fumbles
01:07:07In his third year
01:07:08From Southern California
01:07:09He was a big
01:07:11Number one pick
01:07:12And now
01:07:12In his third season
01:07:13Really paying dividends
01:07:144-17
01:07:164-17
01:07:16On the 43 of Miami
01:07:20Good walk
01:07:21Good walk
01:07:21And then
01:07:22Flag down
01:07:23Martin with a block
01:07:24Run front
01:07:25So the four-yard line,
01:07:30Massey stepped out back at the six.
01:07:33Terrell Buckley got him.
01:07:34Let's see if it counts.
01:07:35It's offsides against Miami Dolphins.
01:07:3936-yard run for Curtis Martin.
01:07:42That's more than he gained.
01:07:43Offsides, number 97 for the defense,
01:07:46lined up in a neutral zone,
01:07:48and he's declined first down.
01:07:50That's more than his total for the whole game
01:07:53prior to that run.
01:07:55Aaron Jones.
01:07:57Yeah, you're lined up across the neutral zone.
01:07:59That's where they call him.
01:08:00The funny part about this whole play is
01:08:02at the end of the play,
01:08:03they're having to wait on Bledsoe
01:08:04because he stayed all the way back here by the 40
01:08:07because he figured it's got to be against us.
01:08:08Well, it was the second time today
01:08:10Curtis Martin had broken off a long run.
01:08:12The first time, it was called back for Harding,
01:08:14so he just assumed it was another offensive player.
01:08:17That's all with over 500 yards passing
01:08:19and three touchdowns.
01:08:21Gives it to Martin,
01:08:22who has a couple of rushing touchdowns
01:08:23in the first half.
01:08:25Oliver stops him at the four.
01:08:28Martin now has carried the ball 15 times
01:08:31for 13 yards and one time for 36.
01:08:37A couple of touchdowns.
01:08:38You know, Dick, we talked about it earlier.
01:08:39You look at this New England team
01:08:41and the offense especially.
01:08:43I really don't believe they worry
01:08:45about the running game too much.
01:08:46They have so many weapons.
01:08:47We talked about outside the tight end.
01:08:50Keith Byers now coming in.
01:08:52Throw the ball.
01:08:53Try to make big plays.
01:08:54And every once in a while,
01:08:54you give it to Curtis Martin,
01:08:56who is also capable of making big plays.
01:08:58The Patriots on a roll,
01:08:59going for their sixth win in the last seven games.
01:09:06Martin to the two.
01:09:09Chris Singleton and others on the tackle.
01:09:12Jimmy Johnson's watery eyes
01:09:14from the winds of the blown through
01:09:16the late afternoon here in New England.
01:09:18And the Miami defense,
01:09:19I don't know what you tell them.
01:09:21They tried to play it safe.
01:09:23Conservative.
01:09:24They gave up touchdowns.
01:09:25And then when they gambled
01:09:26and tried to be aggressive,
01:09:27they blitzed through what so.
01:09:29They gave up big plays for touchdowns.
01:09:31Again, I remember,
01:09:32if they lose this ball game,
01:09:33which looks like they're going to do,
01:09:34they're down by 18 points,
01:09:36is that this is only two losses in their division.
01:09:38They're going to go to four and five, granted.
01:09:41But still, they've only lost two games
01:09:44in their division.
01:09:45But the impossible task is
01:09:47that they really would probably have to win
01:09:49almost all of their games.
01:09:52And next week becomes an absolute must
01:09:53against Indianapolis.
01:09:55And so it will be for the Colts
01:09:56who will come down there
01:09:57after losing to San Diego at home.
01:09:59So it becomes a very key game.
01:10:04There it is now
01:10:05with Buffalo beating Washington,
01:10:06New England apparent winners.
01:10:08Indianapolis lost to San Diego.
01:10:11And the Jets waiting to make
01:10:13somebody's life miserable
01:10:15as we come down the stretch.
01:10:16And, you know, you were absolutely right.
01:10:18You said this earlier,
01:10:19and you've said it before, though,
01:10:20that the Jets are going to be
01:10:21the determining factor
01:10:22of who's going to win the AFC East.
01:10:24They're not going to win it.
01:10:25But they play a lot of teams
01:10:26that want to.
01:10:27I got that down.
01:10:28I got that part down.
01:10:29Now the question is,
01:10:30who's going to win it?
01:10:31Let's go back to the biggest play
01:10:33of this game.
01:10:35The fumble call
01:10:36that went New England's way.
01:10:37Miami had just intercepted a pass.
01:10:39Well, this is the call
01:10:41at the start of the game.
01:10:42This was insignificant
01:10:43because Martin fumbled.
01:10:45It was ruled a touchdown anyway,
01:10:46and Burke, number 85,
01:10:47would fall on the ball.
01:10:49But the big fumble
01:10:50was the one Abdul-Jabbar
01:10:52of Miami
01:10:53with the lead, 17-14.
01:10:55They've just made an interception.
01:10:57And here's that call,
01:11:00and this will be talked about
01:11:01all week long in South Florida.
01:11:03That's for certain.
01:11:04Abdul-Jabbar down.
01:11:05Then the ball pops out.
01:11:07And from another angle later,
01:11:09you can see.
01:11:10Curtis Martin, meanwhile,
01:11:12gets the hat trick.
01:11:13His third touchdown.
01:11:15And the New England Patriots
01:11:17roll it up.
01:11:1841-17.
01:11:26The thing that really made
01:11:27that play so bad on the call
01:11:29is that the Miami Dolphins
01:11:30at that point in time
01:11:31were inside the 30-yard line
01:11:33on their way in the score.
01:11:35Now, again, you know,
01:11:36he could have scored,
01:11:37could not have.
01:11:37But they were on their way
01:11:38in the score
01:11:39when they took the ball
01:11:40away from him.
01:11:45Four touchdowns
01:11:47for New England.
01:11:49And the Terry just does
01:11:50squeak that one through
01:11:51since Miami led 17-14
01:11:53and that fumbled ball
01:11:55was made.
01:11:58Curtis Martin,
01:12:00three touchdowns.
01:12:0242-17.
01:12:03New England.
01:12:05Six out of seven
01:12:06for the Pats.
01:12:07Let's go to New York.
01:12:10All right, Dick.
01:12:11At Buffalo,
01:12:12what a day running
01:12:12the football the Bills have.
01:12:14This is Derek Holmes.
01:12:1514 yards,
01:12:16his third touchdown
01:12:16of the day.
01:12:17He rushed for 122.
01:12:19Thurman Thomas for 107.
01:12:21The Bills knock off
01:12:22the NFL's longest winning streak.
01:12:24Redskins had won
01:12:25seven straight,
01:12:2538-13.
01:12:26Buffalo at Philly
01:12:27here on NBC next week.
01:12:28Dick.
01:12:29All right, Greg,
01:12:31and this New England
01:12:33will go for
01:12:35its continued run
01:12:37as they play
01:12:39at New York
01:12:40the Jets next week.
01:12:42Phil,
01:12:43you know,
01:12:43you said something,
01:12:44you know,
01:12:44you see Drew Bledsoe
01:12:45thread the ball around,
01:12:46thrown for over 400 yards.
01:12:48Right.
01:12:49And you said that
01:12:50New England really,
01:12:50they don't,
01:12:51they're not concerned
01:12:52about their running game.
01:12:52I don't think they are,
01:12:54Paul,
01:12:54the strength of this team
01:12:55is throwing the football,
01:12:56the outside players,
01:12:57the quarterback,
01:12:59then you sprinkle in
01:12:59a really good running back
01:13:00in Curtis Martin.
01:13:02And again,
01:13:03we've seen it today,
01:13:03they make so many big plays
01:13:05in the passing game
01:13:06and it kind of goes back
01:13:07to what Bill Parcells
01:13:09said to us.
01:13:09Tongue in cheek,
01:13:10he goes,
01:13:11I'm the Doug Moore,
01:13:12the Paul Westhead
01:13:13of the NFL.
01:13:14We try to score
01:13:15as fast as we can.
01:13:16We throw a jumper
01:13:17and then we just play
01:13:18a little defense
01:13:19and try to get the ball
01:13:20back again.
01:13:20That's the nice work
01:13:22telling your defense
01:13:24are not doing very well.
01:13:26Spikes takes it out
01:13:27to the 24-yard line.
01:13:28Let's go back
01:13:29to the fumble again.
01:13:30We'll give you another
01:13:30angle on it
01:13:31where you can see
01:13:32that the ground clearly
01:13:33causes the fumble.
01:13:35There's a big pile
01:13:36of humanity
01:13:37and none of the officials
01:13:38apparently had
01:13:38a clean look at it.
01:13:40There he comes down,
01:13:41the elbow,
01:13:42and then the ball
01:13:42comes out.
01:13:43And you can clearly see
01:13:44Abdul-Jabbar
01:13:45had the ball
01:13:46in his possessions.
01:13:48He hit the ground
01:13:48when his arm
01:13:49hit the ground.
01:13:49That's when the
01:13:50fumble occurred.
01:13:51Well, here's Jimmy.
01:13:52He's going nuts
01:13:52because you can see
01:13:53it on the big scoreboard
01:13:54here.
01:13:54But the thing about it
01:13:55is when you say
01:13:55the ground can't
01:13:56cause a fumble
01:13:57if you're being tackled
01:13:58and you're going
01:13:58down, it can't be.
01:13:59If you're in the middle
01:14:00of the field
01:14:00and nobody tackles
01:14:01and you get the ground
01:14:02it is a fumble
01:14:03just to clear it up.
01:14:05Dan Marino
01:14:06will not risk
01:14:06any further entry
01:14:08to that angle.
01:14:09Craig Erickson
01:14:09takes over
01:14:10with two and a half
01:14:12to go.
01:14:12Fires down the middle.
01:14:13Complete.
01:14:14Scott Miller
01:14:15to the 44.
01:14:16Flag down.
01:14:17Why not?
01:14:18So, a disappointing day
01:14:24for Marino
01:14:24and Miami.
01:14:27Jam to the face.
01:14:28Number 69.
01:14:31That's his second hand
01:14:32to the face today.
01:14:33And that puts Miami
01:14:35over the 100-yard mark
01:14:36and penalty yards.
01:14:38Key Sims,
01:14:38number 69,
01:14:40gets her hand up
01:14:41on the face mask
01:14:42of Chris Slade.
01:14:44Easy for the official
01:14:45to see.
01:14:46Easy calls.
01:14:4714th golf
01:14:48and penalty,
01:14:49106 yards.
01:14:51Marino,
01:14:52less than 100
01:14:52from 50,000.
01:14:55He'll reach that
01:14:57incredible yardage
01:14:58total at home
01:14:59next week
01:15:00against Indianapolis.
01:15:04Erickson
01:15:04fumbles.
01:15:05No,
01:15:05he gets it off
01:15:06and completes
01:15:08the penalty
01:15:08to the 20-yard line.
01:15:09Almost looked as if
01:15:10that ball was going
01:15:11to be knocked free.
01:15:12Six yards on the play.
01:15:14McGinnis again,
01:15:15Harrison the quarterback
01:15:16and we're at the
01:15:17two-minute warning.
01:15:19They're watching
01:15:22the NFL
01:15:23on NBC.
01:15:27Two minutes left
01:15:28here in Foxborough
01:15:28as we welcome
01:15:29those of you
01:15:30who have seen
01:15:31Kansas City
01:15:31win at Minnesota
01:15:3221-6
01:15:34as the Chiefs
01:15:35go 6-3
01:15:36and the Vikes
01:15:37in a bit of a tailspin
01:15:385-4.
01:15:40Dan Marino
01:15:40and Miami
01:15:41were in the lead
01:15:42early in this
01:15:43second half
01:15:4417-14
01:15:45and then it's
01:15:46collapsed on them.
01:15:47They got a bad ball
01:15:48and then New England
01:15:49with every opportunity.
01:15:52Bernie Parmley
01:15:53running it out
01:15:54to the 32-yard line.
01:15:56Marino watching
01:15:57Craig Erickson
01:15:58here in the final minutes
01:15:59finish up the job
01:16:00as the Patriots
01:16:01lead 42-17
01:16:02a big passing day
01:16:04for Marino's
01:16:05counterpart in New England.
01:16:07Drew Bledsoe
01:16:08over 400 yards
01:16:09throwing the ball
01:16:09as opposing teams
01:16:11continue to just
01:16:12rip apart
01:16:13Miami's
01:16:14pass defense.
01:16:15Parmley
01:16:15picks up the first
01:16:16down out
01:16:1745-yard line.
01:16:18Craig Erickson
01:16:19with the pitch.
01:16:20You know,
01:16:20talking about that
01:16:21Miami defense,
01:16:22Dick,
01:16:22this is the same
01:16:23defense,
01:16:23the same philosophy
01:16:24that won Super Bowls
01:16:26for Jimmy Johnson
01:16:27down in Dallas
01:16:28and it's really
01:16:29the pass coverage
01:16:30has really not
01:16:31been that bad
01:16:32but what's really
01:16:32magnifies it
01:16:34is the fact
01:16:34they just get
01:16:35no pass rush
01:16:36at all
01:16:36from their front four.
01:16:37a gallant effort
01:16:40by Lamar Thomas
01:16:41who is ruled
01:16:42to have caught
01:16:43the ball
01:16:43and the ball
01:16:44and the helmet
01:16:45pop free
01:16:46on contact
01:16:46with the ground.
01:16:49First down.
01:16:5226 yards
01:16:53a gutsy play.
01:16:55I mean,
01:16:56Lamar Thomas
01:16:56he just went up
01:16:57and takes this ball
01:16:58away.
01:16:58He wants this catch
01:16:59and here's what happens
01:17:00is down his helmet
01:17:01pops off.
01:17:02You know,
01:17:02there is a timeout
01:17:04here.
01:17:04You see this great catch
01:17:05by Lamar Thomas
01:17:06and then he gets
01:17:07just whacking him.
01:17:10You know,
01:17:10Phil,
01:17:12with like two minutes
01:17:13to go in a ball game
01:17:14you're down by 25 points.
01:17:16You've already lost
01:17:17a couple of guys
01:17:17in this ball game.
01:17:18I'm talking about
01:17:18Miami now
01:17:19and I know
01:17:20if you did it
01:17:20you're going to get
01:17:21booed and written up
01:17:22by the newspapers
01:17:23but I mean,
01:17:23don't lose anybody else.
01:17:25They already took
01:17:26Marino out.
01:17:27Just sit on the ball
01:17:27get out of here
01:17:28and don't try to get
01:17:29any, you know,
01:17:30I know you don't do that
01:17:31but you just save
01:17:31your players.
01:17:32Well, let's talk
01:17:33about Dan Marino.
01:17:34Not an easy day
01:17:35his own receivers
01:17:36weren't always good
01:17:38to him
01:17:38and the Patriots
01:17:40certainly were not.
01:17:43Hitchcock
01:17:43with an interception
01:17:44and Willie McGinnis.
01:17:46And if you hold
01:17:47the ball too long
01:17:47in this league
01:17:48bad things happen
01:17:49and boy,
01:17:50did Dan Marino
01:17:51get roughed up
01:17:51on that plate.
01:17:54Oh, Marino
01:17:55in the final minutes
01:17:56of the fourth quarter
01:17:57watches Craig Erickson
01:17:58try to get
01:17:59a cosmetic touchdown
01:18:00for Miami
01:18:01a minute ago.
01:18:03Erickson
01:18:04to the end
01:18:06touchdown
01:18:07O.J.
01:18:08McDuffie
01:18:09so
01:18:11much too little
01:18:12too late
01:18:12but 29 yards
01:18:13as Erickson
01:18:14against the defense
01:18:15willing to give
01:18:16takes
01:18:17and Miami
01:18:18at least
01:18:19will cut the deficit.
01:18:20Well, the nice part
01:18:23about it
01:18:23we're going to see
01:18:23our favorite play
01:18:24the onside kick.
01:18:27Craig Erickson
01:18:28showing some good
01:18:29mobility in the pocket
01:18:30steps up
01:18:31and when a quarterback
01:18:32steps up
01:18:33and he gets that
01:18:34extra time
01:18:35like that
01:18:35it usually enables
01:18:36the receiver
01:18:37to get behind
01:18:38the defense
01:18:38and it's an easy
01:18:39touchdown for O.J.
01:18:40McDuffie.
01:18:41That goes back
01:18:41to the play
01:18:42when Hitchcock
01:18:43intercepted Marino
01:18:45when you said
01:18:46he didn't have
01:18:46a chance to step up
01:18:47and throw the ball
01:18:48that he wanted
01:18:49to throw.
01:18:50Going to go for two
01:18:50here.
01:18:51Erickson
01:18:51four for four
01:18:5274 yards
01:18:53on this drive.
01:19:01And deflected
01:19:02incomplete.
01:19:03Erickson
01:19:04did a good job
01:19:05to give himself
01:19:05a chance
01:19:06to throw the ball
01:19:06as he was pressured.
01:19:08Now 42-23
01:19:10New England's lead.
01:19:13How about
01:19:13another update?
01:19:14Let's go to
01:19:14New York
01:19:14and Greg Gumbel.
01:19:16All right, Dick
01:19:17one more look
01:19:18at the play
01:19:18that ended
01:19:19at NBC.
01:19:20Jane Pauley
01:19:20talks with
01:19:20Michael Jordan
01:19:21on Dateline
01:19:22and Mike Ditka
01:19:22on Third Rock
01:19:23from the Sun.
01:19:24Dick.
01:19:25Now Greg
01:19:26down in the
01:19:26Lone Star State
01:19:27they'll be talking
01:19:28about that
01:19:29with Dallas
01:19:29in position
01:19:30for a tying
01:19:30field goal
01:19:31only to be
01:19:32intercepted
01:19:33and Ray Rhodes
01:19:33Eagles
01:19:34are 7-2.
01:19:36I'm telling you
01:19:37Dick
01:19:37I can't
01:19:38I hope
01:19:38I miss my
01:19:39plane so I can
01:19:40stay over
01:19:40and watch
01:19:40Mike Ditka
01:19:41on Third Rock
01:19:42from the Sun.
01:19:42I'm going to tell you
01:19:43this guy
01:19:43is a natural
01:19:44coach.
01:19:45Did you see
01:19:46those promos?
01:19:47Oh, you mean
01:19:48he's not a natural
01:19:49actor?
01:19:49No, he's a natural
01:19:50coach.
01:19:51Here's your play
01:19:52and it's free
01:19:54for a moment.
01:19:55New England
01:19:55had its hands
01:19:57on it
01:19:57and Miami
01:19:58says they've
01:19:59got it.
01:20:00One of the
01:20:01Patriots came
01:20:02to field the ball
01:20:03quickly
01:20:03which of course
01:20:04you can do
01:20:04and could not
01:20:06recover it
01:20:07and Miami
01:20:08comes out of
01:20:08the pile
01:20:09with it.
01:20:09Keith Byers
01:20:10who recovered
01:20:11an onside kick
01:20:12last week
01:20:13at the end
01:20:13of the game
01:20:14comes up
01:20:15and tries
01:20:15to get the
01:20:15ball
01:20:16before it
01:20:16goes to
01:20:1710 yards
01:20:17and it
01:20:18takes the
01:20:19hop
01:20:19just in
01:20:19front of
01:20:20him
01:20:20watching
01:20:20number 41
01:20:22Keith Byers
01:20:22well he
01:20:23actually gets
01:20:23gets there
01:20:24in time
01:20:25he gets
01:20:25his arms
01:20:25under it
01:20:26but not
01:20:26able to
01:20:27hold on
01:20:27to it.
01:20:28Looked like
01:20:28Bernie Parmelee
01:20:29was the man
01:20:29yep he
01:20:30pulled it
01:20:30out of
01:20:31the pile.
01:20:32Watch
01:20:32Keith Byers
01:20:33he comes
01:20:34up does
01:20:34a good
01:20:34job
01:20:35just not
01:20:36able to
01:20:37hold on
01:20:38to it
01:20:38and Bernie
01:20:39Parmelee
01:20:39does the
01:20:40old
01:20:40pull it
01:20:41from everybody
01:20:42at the
01:20:42bottom
01:20:42of the
01:20:42pile
01:20:43trick
01:20:43you know
01:20:43the
01:20:44major
01:20:44thing
01:20:44about
01:20:44you
01:20:44kick
01:20:44an
01:20:45onside
01:20:45kick
01:20:45and you
01:20:46get the
01:20:46ball
01:20:46at the
01:20:4636-yard
01:20:47line
01:20:47it's not
01:20:48like
01:20:48it's not
01:20:49like
01:20:4940 before
01:20:50you know
01:20:50get it
01:20:50at midfield
01:20:5136
01:20:5252 seconds
01:20:54left
01:20:54for Craig
01:20:55Erickson
01:20:55incompletely
01:21:00the target
01:21:02Jim Gray
01:21:04is down
01:21:05on the
01:21:05sidelines
01:21:05Dick
01:21:06one thing
01:21:06about this
01:21:07drive right
01:21:07here is
01:21:08point
01:21:08differential
01:21:08is one
01:21:09of the
01:21:09tiebreakers
01:21:10for the
01:21:10playoffs
01:21:10if it
01:21:11ever
01:21:11could
01:21:11come
01:21:11down
01:21:11to
01:21:12that
01:21:12they
01:21:12lost
01:21:12the
01:21:13first
01:21:13week
01:21:13the
01:21:14Patriots
01:21:14did
01:21:1424-10
01:21:15so this
01:21:16drive
01:21:16would make
01:21:17it
01:21:1742-30
01:21:18and so
01:21:19the
01:21:19Miami
01:21:19Dolphins
01:21:20would win
01:21:20on point
01:21:20differential
01:21:21if they
01:21:21get in
01:21:21the
01:21:22endzone
01:21:22in this
01:21:22last
01:21:2248
01:21:23seconds
01:21:23there
01:21:25he is
01:21:25always
01:21:26with that
01:21:26old
01:21:26board out
01:21:29tickering
01:21:29those numbers
01:21:30in case
01:21:30we go down
01:21:31to that
01:21:32and that
01:21:32is one
01:21:32of the
01:21:32tiebreakers
01:21:33the final
01:21:35tiebreakers
01:21:35Erickson
01:21:37throws
01:21:37complete
01:21:38obviously
01:21:40down was
01:21:40McDuffie
01:21:41but the
01:21:41whistle
01:21:41hadn't
01:21:42sounded
01:21:42so he
01:21:42figured
01:21:43maybe
01:21:43no one
01:21:44saw it
01:21:45clock
01:21:47running
01:21:4733-32
01:21:48seconds
01:21:49Erickson
01:21:52has been
01:21:52perfect
01:21:52off the
01:21:53bench
01:21:53well
01:22:07it'll be
01:22:07interesting
01:22:08to see
01:22:08next week
01:22:09we're going

01:22:15how
01:22:16will

01:22:18good
01:22:18about
01:22:19this
