00:00...set to kick off to the combination of Henry Bailey and Alex Van Dyke.
00:05The Jets winning the toss and about to receive.
00:13And here is Bailey, the first-year player from UNLV.
00:18Good coverage by the Patriots as Bailey is hit down short of the 20-yard line.
00:23An 18-yard return taken down by backup linebacker Marty Moore.
00:27There's Frank Wright.
00:30Making his fourth straight start for the injured Neil O'Donnell.
00:34A look at the offensive line.
00:36They played well in the win over Arizona.
00:38Jumbo Elliott is back at left tackle.
00:41Fothered by the chronic back problems.
00:43The quarterback is right.
00:45Running backs, Adrian Murrell and Richie Anderson.
00:48Murrell with 744 rushing yards, number four in the AFC.
00:53And we'll see quite a bit of Wayne Crabbeck.
00:56The toss for Murrell.
00:59He's able to break the tackle.
01:02Reaches out to the 24-yard line.
01:05And a look at the New England defensive unit.
01:09Willie McGinnis coming off a strong game last week against Miami.
01:14Eight tackles and two sacks.
01:18The Patriot front four.
01:20A change in the linebacking court.
01:22Wayne Saab starting for Chris Slade who has not been playing well recently.
01:27Ricky Reynolds opens it left corner.
01:29Starting for the injured Ty Law moving over from the right side.
01:32Jimmy Hitchcock starting on the right side.
01:35A second down and five.
01:37Now Murrell tries that right side.
01:40And again able to break a tackle but he's shy of the first down.
01:43Left defensive end Mike Jones and Lawyer Malloy coming up from the secondary making the stop.
01:50It'll be a third down and one for the Jets.
01:55We'll see Adrian Murrell try to extend those numbers from last week.
01:59Almost 200 yards averaging 6.4 a carry.
02:02And they're going to be even though the New England Patriots are 30th against the pass.
02:08We're going to see Adrian Murrell with the ball a lot this afternoon.
02:17And Murrell turns the corner.
02:20And we'll have to see where they spot it.
02:22The Patriots feel they held them.
02:24Malloy have the angle on them.
02:26As did Johnson.
02:31All depends on the spot on that one.
02:33Well it is a Jets spot and a first down.
02:37Sam you mentioned the stat of being 30th against the pass.
02:41But that's deceiving because of the fact that the Patriots have won six of their nine games.
02:47So they're going up against clubs that have to come from behind.
02:50And they are eighth against the run.
02:53This is a team that is throwing the ball.
02:55Their offense is controlling the scoring but not controlling the clock.
02:59So the opponents offense is on the field a lot running up those stats.
03:02One other factor they have allowed three long Hail Marys.
03:06Two in the game against Jacksonville.
03:09Well the Jets forced to take a timeout.
03:12The play clock running down so they avoid the delay of the game.
03:16Just shy of two minutes gone by.
03:19Patriots and Jets with no score.
03:22Jets in their first possession of the game.
03:26And it is a first and ten at the 30 yard line.
03:29That's Keyshawn Johnson in motion.
03:31Play action.
03:32And Wright looking for Graham.
03:37It will be a second down and ten.
03:38Graham covered by Clay and Reynolds.
03:41We are joined on the sidelines today by Len Berman.
03:44Let's check in on the field with Len.
03:47Alright thanks Marv.
03:48You know with Bill Parcells there is always speculation what he will be doing in the future.
03:52There are some Jets fans who would like to see him come back to the stadium with the success that he has had with the Giants over the years.
03:58Well Patriots owner Bob Kraft told me before the game that Bill Parcells has told him that the Patriots are the last team that he will coach.
04:06So they will decide when the season is over.
04:08They will figure it out.
04:09But if he coaches it will be with New England.
04:12Marv, Sam.
04:13Alright thanks Len.
04:14Second down and ten.
04:15From the 30 yard line and Wright connecting with Graham.
04:20Ricky Reynolds on the coverage.
04:23And the ball is spotted.
04:26Just past the marker it is a first down for the Jets.
04:29Well there has been much speculation getting back to what Len reported.
04:33That Parcells could be interested in going elsewhere.
04:37Be it back to broadcasting or perhaps another team.
04:41The Jets have certainly come up.
04:44His answer earlier this week.
04:46He said the Jet rumors are very distasteful.
04:49He would not say anything else about that.
04:52Here's Morrell.
04:54Short pick up by Adrian Morrell.
04:57And Sam, I get the idea he is really enjoying coaching this year.
05:02But remember he did ask out of that final year of his five year contract.
05:07It was cancelled.
05:08He has had what would be considered to be an icy relationship with Patriots owner Bob Pratt.
05:15So his future is uncertain.
05:17But he figures to be in an excellent position the way things are going.
05:21And I tell you, coaches don't like to hear a conversation about next year because they're constantly trying to get their team to focus on this game.
05:28Second down and seven.
05:30And here's Morrell.
05:31Nice move by Morrell for another first down.
05:35Tripped up by the middle linebacker Ted Johnson.
05:38This is what Bill Parcells was worried about.
05:41A New York Jet team with maybe the best running back in the division.
05:45Good solid zone blocking up front.
05:47Look at the hole.
05:48Morrell reads the bin back.
05:50That's not really a cut back.
05:51It's not by design.
05:52The offensive line is going to spread the defensive line and the hole will be picked.
05:57In this blocking scheme, Marv, you don't have to drive anybody off the ball.
06:01Just make contact, stay with them, and let the running back run.
06:04Keyshawn Johnson split to the right and Jeff Graham to the left.
06:09First and ten from midfield.
06:11Morrell continues to run well.
06:16The free safety Willie Clay on the stop.
06:20Six carries, 28 yards for Morrell.
06:23One other point regarding Parcells.
06:25I don't really think he knows at this moment what he will be doing.
06:30Well, he told me before the game that he wanted to get back in the booth with you.
06:34Yes.
06:35Which is today.
06:37This afternoon.
06:38Yes.
06:39Which is worrying me a little bit too.
06:41And my anxiety level is going up as a result of that last report.
06:44Right.
06:45I know that's very high on his list of options.
06:48Second down and three.
06:50And guess who?
06:51Adrian Morrell.
06:53And he stopped short on the first down.
06:56So it has been Adrian Morrell left and then right.
07:00This time, Mark Wheeler got the raps on him.
07:04The blocking up front is not only taking place at the point of attack, but it's taking place throughout the run.
07:09Mark, Matt Dwyer at the very end of this play is still blocking after the whistle blows.
07:15Last week he had a 15-yard penalty for the same kind of block.
07:18That's what you want your players to do.
07:20The block until they hear that whistle.
07:21Don't be stopping just prior to it.
07:23Tenth play of the drive.
07:24Patriots yet to touch the ball offensively with five minutes gone by.
07:29Saw the movement.
07:30Penalty marker down.
07:31And that pass play intended for Richie Anderson broken up.
07:34The strong safety, Terry Ray, handing a piece of it.
07:39The referee is Bernie Kukar.
07:46And the call against New England.
07:48Third down and less than five.
07:50A good time to work the hard count.
07:51Offside.
07:52The defensive left tackle.
07:55That's a five-yard penalty.
07:57First down.
07:59You know, in practice the coach will simulate situation.
08:02There's the hard count.
08:03He's not quite back.
08:05He could jump off sides if he gets back.
08:07The penalty is, you know, there would be no penalty, obviously.
08:10But the situation in practice is practiced.
08:14In other words, they say it's third down and less than three,
08:16and the quarterback works the hard count.
08:17Yeah, that was Teddy Bruschi, the rookie from Arizona, called for the offside.
08:21Right with a football pass completed to Jeff Graham,
08:26working the sideline beautifully.
08:29Jimmy Hitchcock, who was a target last week of Dan Marino,
08:33was covering on the play another jet first down.
08:37And Jeff Graham, in game six, suffered a knee injury,
08:40had arthroscopic surgery, got back in about 16 or 17 days.
08:44Medical, athletic surgery like that, the arthroscopic surgery,
08:48gets these guys back fast.
08:50He has no trouble cutting off his knees now.
08:54And a first down at the 26-yard line.
08:57Here's Morrell.
08:59That time got caught behind a big pileup,
09:03was stopped by Willie McGinnis.
09:05And we're set to check in for the first time with Greg Gumbel.
09:08Here's Greg.
09:09All right, Marv, we'll take you to New Orleans.
09:12The Oilers and the Saints.
09:13Watch Chris Chandler drop the snap, pick it up, step forward,
09:18and hit Chris Sanders.
09:19Coming across the middle, and nobody will catch him.
09:2142 yards and a touchdown with the extra point.
09:24The Oilers jump to the 7-0 lead on the New Orleans Saints.
09:27Marv?
09:28Thank you, Greg.
09:29Well, Houston looking for its sixth win of the season.
09:35Coming into today, they're two games behind the leaders in the central,
09:39the Pittsburgh Steelers.
09:42And a timeout is called here.
09:44The Jets using two timeouts in the early going.
09:53Sam, what is going on here?
09:55The Jets having to use two timeouts early with the clock running down.
10:01Well, they've substituted almost every play,
10:03and they're getting the play in a little bit late.
10:05That doesn't give them a time,
10:06or it doesn't give time for the quarterback to call it,
10:08get him to the line, snap it in 40 seconds.
10:10Second down and 10.
10:13And right throwing in zone.
10:15Touchdown, Jeff Graham!
10:27Jeff Graham with his second touchdown catch of the season.
10:30He beat the right corner.
10:32Jimmy Hitchcock on a 26-yard pass play.
10:36Inside release, straight up the field.
10:38The safety's dead in the middle,
10:39and the ball is thrown way over the shoulder.
10:41Full extension on the catch.
10:43This is only the second time this year they've taken the ball
10:47their first drive and marched it in for a touchdown.
10:50Yes, there has been a pattern in that department.
10:55They have not done well in their opening drive.
10:58But this one controlling the ball for 6 minutes, 17 seconds.
11:02Nick Lowry on for the extra point.
11:0812 plays, 80 yards.
11:12And it's Frank Wright combining with Jeff Graham for a 7-0 Jet lead.
11:18The Boston area goes as pointed out by our track statistician Elliot Gow.
11:28Troy Brown on the kick return.
11:30He burned the Jets last season.
11:33On the recovery of a fumble on a kick return.
11:37He goes 28 yards, but a penalty marker is down.
11:44Lana Young made the stop.
11:46And the call against the Jets.
11:48Unusual.
11:50Now that goes on at the end of the play.
11:53The Patriots are one of the better teams in field position after a kickoff return.
11:57Illegal use of hands.
11:59Number 56 on the kicking team.
12:01Hands to the face.
12:03That's a five yard penalty from the end of the run.
12:05First down.
12:07So Rick Hamilton is called on the penalty.
12:10Let's check out the lineups.
12:12Drew Bledsoe at the helm for the New England Patriots up front.
12:16Armstrong, Roberts, Willabaugh, Rucci and Lane.
12:22And the Patriots start out from their 38-yard line.
12:26The Jets with a 7-0 lead.
12:29And it's Curtis Martin running well and running for the first down.
12:35Take it out of bounds by the right corner.
12:37Ray Mickens, a 12-yard pickup for the outstanding second-year man out of pit.
12:42Bledsoe the quarterback.
12:43Martin and Gash are the running backs.
12:46The receivers, Jefferson, Glenn and Coates.
12:50Terry Glenn leading all rookie receivers with 47 catches.
12:53When they go double tight end, a familiar name, Keith Byers,
12:56will check in as the second tight end.
13:00Keith Byers playing in his fourth game as a Patriot.
13:03coming over after he was released by Jimmy Johnson in Miami.
13:07Here's Bledsoe.
13:08And that one sails over the head of Shawn Jefferson.
13:14It'll be a second down and ten.
13:17The Jets defensively getting a lift.
13:20A surprise, Hugh Douglas, who was to play today,
13:23but in the starting lineup back from a fractured right ankle.
13:27Marvin Jones also making his return from the sprained knee,
13:31suffered back in game five against the Redskins.
13:33He's missed the last four games.
13:36And you saw the secondary, Glenn, Green, Jones, and Mickens.
13:40Second down and ten again.
13:43It is Martin.
13:44Big hole.
13:45Hammond is able to get inside the 40-yard line.
13:49Another New England first down.
13:52They're rotating.
13:53Sam Gash back in the ball game on this play.
13:55Keith Byers out.
13:56He played the last one.
13:58This is a draw play.
13:59The quarterback's going to take two steps back,
14:01looking down the field, turns, and the lead draw by the lead back.
14:04There's nothing left.
14:05Everybody drops back the first retreat by the linebackers.
14:08It's been the pass.
14:09By the time they come up, there's blockers on them.
14:12Second consecutive run for 12 yards for Curtis Martin,
14:18who has just killed the Jets.
14:21First down at the 38-yard line.
14:24Letso getting the tie.
14:26Have a long look.
14:27And it's intercepted.
14:29Aaron Glenn on the interception.
14:32And the play blown dead.
14:35The pass was intended for Kerry Glenn.
14:40The draw fake was, the draw was fake.
14:43They had both line receivers cross each other all the way across the field.
14:49Aaron Glenn all over this one.
14:51Now the ball's just in the air too long.
14:52By the time it comes down, Aaron Glenn's able to take position away.
14:56Fake the draw.
14:57All the linebackers, you're going to see it coming across the field.
15:00Right in here is going to be the area of the catch, but there's Glenn.
15:04Really, that's the receiver's fault more than the quarterback.
15:07The receiver should come back and box Aaron Glenn out.
15:09Watch him.
15:10He's going to come back inside.
15:11He's got position on him now, but Glenn is too fast.
15:14Any time you're running that long, you've got time to recover.
15:17Third interception of the season for Aaron Glenn.
15:20Drew Bledsoe picked off for only the seventh time this season.
15:25Among the fewest in the NFL, Richie Anderson getting the call.
15:31Tripped up by Jimmy Hitchcock.
15:33Well, on the pregame show, we were talking about the rat traps in Jet Green
15:38that were placed right throughout the New England Patriot locker room.
15:41And obviously, there was reason for concern on the part of head coach Bill Parcells.
15:47They are in the trap here in the Meadowlands.
15:51Down 7-0.
15:52Bledsoe picked off just a moment ago.
15:546.40 remaining in this opening quarter.
15:58And right for Anderson.
16:02And he is taken down at the 20-yard line.
16:06A pickup of six.
16:07Ricky Reynolds on the tackle.
16:10Richie Anderson is being used more and more as this season goes along
16:13as a receiver out of the backfield.
16:15He's got good hands, but he's also a good locker.
16:17Now, he's not one of those big, bruising, fullback types.
16:20In fact, he almost looks like a tailback.
16:22But he's used as a fullback, and we'll find him in the flat
16:25and down the field as this game goes on.
16:28Richie Anderson in his third season out of Penn State
16:31as a senior second in the nation in scoring.
16:34Third down and five.
16:37And right out of the shotgun, difficulty with the snap,
16:40and is able to cover up.
16:42Down of the two-yard line.
16:44He was chased by Chris Slade.
16:50Shotgun snap.
16:51Quarterback is really just catching a pass.
16:54It looks like it's right to him.
16:56Sometimes the quarterback will glance up,
16:58try to see if he can peek and see a blitz coming
17:00or see if he can read coverage.
17:01Just like a receiver taking his eye off the ball on a catch.
17:04Ball goes through.
17:06That's almost a turnover, and it could be a turnover
17:09because now they've got that long...
17:11Well, it's fourth down.
17:12They're going to have to punt it out of there,
17:13but that one was one of those plays
17:16where you could give the seven points you just made away.
17:19And a short kick from Hanson.
17:21Here's Meggett inside the 35,
17:25and reaches out to the 26-yard line.
17:28Stopped by Kyle Clifton.
17:30Only a 36-yard punt from Hanson,
17:33who was deep in his end zone, and a 14-yard return.
17:36The lead on the touchdown pass from Frank Wright to Jeff Graham.
17:40Bledsoe out of deflection.
17:43It is picked off again by the Jets.
17:47Victor Green, the strong safety.
17:51Play was blown dead.
17:53Once again, Jets try to pick up additional yardage,
17:56so Bledsoe once again trying to hit Terry Glenn.
18:00The earlier interception was a pass intended for Glenn,
18:04and here's Drew Bledsoe coming in with only six interceptions for the season,
18:09and already in this first quarter,
18:11he's been picked off twice, and he is 0 for his first three.
18:15And they did not blow it dead.
18:17Extra yardage did count.
18:20Drew Bledsoe and Bill Parcells standing silently there on the sideline.
18:25Bill just not ready to comment on that last play.
18:29Ball bounced off the receiver, though.
18:31That's something the quarterback can't control when he lets the ball go.
18:34Well, I think the conversation in his own mind was on the salty side.
18:39Absolutely.
18:40All right, Morrell has stopped.
18:42Short pickup for Adrian Morrell as the Jets start out from their 27-yard line.
18:52Glenn was in motion.
18:54Came back inside.
18:55The ball is right there.
18:56That's a catchable ball.
18:57That's not a high throw at all.
18:59You like to throw the ball a letter high,
19:01so that if there is a deflection like that,
19:03it bounces down onto the side.
19:05But that's a ball that every receiver in this league is supposed to catch.
19:08And Victor Green came up with his first interception of the season.
19:13Not pretty numbers here at the start for Bledsoe.
19:15The Jets second down and seven.
19:18Morrell tried to pick his way, but gang tackled.
19:23Picked up a couple.
19:25We are set for another update.
19:27Let's check in with Greg Gumbel.
19:29All right, Marv, in Philadelphia, the Eagles with a 7-0 lead,
19:32and then the Bills special teams come up big.
19:34This is rookie Gabe Northern.
19:36Blocks the punt.
19:37Picks it up.
19:38Takes it 18 yards for the touchdown.
19:40The extra point ties things up.
19:42The Bills and the Eagles at 7 apiece in the first quarter.
19:45Marv?
19:46Thank you, Greg.
19:48Philadelphia Eagles coming into today.
19:50Tied with Washington on top of the NFC East with records of 7-2.
19:55The Eagles' major problem has been on special teams.
20:00And the out pattern does not connect Richie Anderson,
20:03the intended receiver covered by the strong safety Terry Ray.
20:08So it is three and out for the Jets with 3-10 remaining in this first quarter.
20:13And Megat dropping back as the punt unit checks in.
20:19Drew Bledsoe getting set for his third series of the day.
20:24He has been intercepted his first two.
20:26Brian Hansen from his 16.
20:30Low snap.
20:32And Megat calling for the fair catch of the tackle.
20:38And a flag is down.
20:41Any time that Hunter Turner waves his hand, his job is to wave it back and forth.
20:46Clearly did it.
20:47He cannot be touched.
20:49Henry Bailey making the stop after the clear indication for the fair catch was shown by Megat.
21:01He's got to get everybody.
21:06There it is.
21:07There's the fair catch.
21:08He can still move forward.
21:09Now he made the fair catch and then he took two or three steps forward.
21:12That is irrelevant.
21:13He has to go find the ball.
21:14The ball could be moved around.
21:15And it is because it's a little windy down there and it's gusting around.
21:18And the ball is not going to take a true flight at the bottom end of the punt.
21:22Sam, that's a rare instance for Megat.
21:25That's only the third fair catch that he's called for this season.
21:30And this one certainly paid off.
21:33I can remember Bill Parcells telling us earlier that he's lighter and quicker and bringing him back more.
21:39Right.
21:40He was saying during preseason that he was passing up on the dessert line at training camp.
21:45So first out of the 48.
21:47And Bledsoff's pass is deflected once again.
21:51And part of that is the design of the play.
21:54It was a three step drop.
21:55But the offensive lineman backed up.
21:57Well, that means that they've got protection.
21:59But those defensive linemen are close enough to reach up and bat the ball down.
22:02They're looking past their blocker.
22:04Arms go up just as they try to time the throw.
22:08And as you saw right there, that time it was Marvin Washington.
22:11Arm got up.
22:12And that's just part of the technique of a defensive man.
22:15If you kick into the quarterback, try to bat it down.
22:17Well, Marvin Washington, a basketball player in Idaho.
22:20Go six foot six.
22:21And that was a clear cut rejection.
22:23Curtis Martin hit for the loss by Hugh Douglas, who is hearing his name chanted by this crowd.
22:33First time he's come back from this injury, making a big difference to this defense.
22:38He and Marvin Jones back today for the first time.
22:41Right over here you'll see Hugh Douglas plays off the would-be blocker.
22:45It's a draw play.
22:46So you're hoping that Douglas comes hard up the field.
22:48He didn't.
22:49He read the block.
22:51And now Dave Meggett replacing Curtis Martin.
22:55Lining up with Sam Gash in the backfield for this third.
22:59And 16.
23:00Look out!
23:01Bledsoe fumbles!
23:02Recovered by Douglas.
23:04The hit by Chad Cascaden, and it has been all Jets here at the start, and Drew Bledsoe is having a very difficult time in the first quarter.
23:24Chad Cascaden is playing in place with Mo Lewis, who is out with a pectoral muscle pull.
23:31Hugh Douglas, and that is the look of a coach that has tried to tell his team all week long, watch out for the trap down in the Meadowlands.
23:41And the trap has snapped on him right now.
23:43The Jets first down at the Patriot 29.
23:52They lead 7-0.
23:542-13 remaining in this first quarter.
23:59Wright goes short-range to Morrell.
24:04And Morrell gets inside the 25-yard line.
24:09Willie Clay, the free safety, with the ankle tackle.
24:13Chad Cascaden is going to come in and just get a clean rush.
24:16I don't think Drew Bledsoe ever really sees him.
24:18And part of what's happening right here is a coach can preach all week long that a team's going to be ready for you.
24:24They've had two weeks to prepare.
24:26They haven't conceded this season.
24:28But in the minds of the players, they're looking at 1-8.
24:30And sometimes it takes a first quarter like this to wake them up.
24:33Second and three at the 22-yard line.
24:39Morrell.
24:43Another Jets first down.
24:45Pios Sankapulatelli with the wraps on Adrian Morrell.
24:50Well, Drew Bledsoe 0-4 here at the start.
24:55You know, he's got a new coach this year, Chris Palmer.
24:58There he is.
24:59He's on the right right here.
25:00You can see him.
25:01And Chris Palmer is really the translator.
25:03When Bill Parcells has a message to give to the quarterbacks, and Drew Bledsoe in particular,
25:10Chris Palmer will translate and basically soften the message a little bit.
25:14And constantly give him not only coaching techniques, but be his comforter a little bit.
25:19And a sounding board for Drew Bledsoe.
25:21Chris Palmer reassigned from his position last year as wide receivers coach.
25:25White with the time.
25:27Does he in? No.
25:30Keyshawn Johnson tried to straddle that end line, but was out of the end zone.
25:37He beat Willie Clay, the free safety, but it will go down as an incomplete pass.
25:43The ball is thrown just a little long, and as he goes up for it, he's going to be clearly out of bounds.
25:47But let me just tell you, that is an acrobatic catch.
25:50And over this kid's career, barring injury, he's going to make a lot of them and get both feet in.
25:54Keyshawn Johnson, two weeks ago, the last game for the Jets, outstanding against Arizona.
26:01Seven catchers, 94 yards, one touchdown, second and 10 at the 18.
26:08And it's Burrell trying to get to the outside.
26:13But that was diagnosed by the combination of Willie Clay and Jimmy Hitchcock.
26:18Great stop and start by Burrell.
26:21This guy can change direction, but he can also stop and start, and that frees him.
26:26In the first quarter, the Jets have been a very good rushing football team.
26:30That's where they get most of their rushing yardage in the first quarter, as you can see right down the line right here through their first nine games.
26:37Nice to tell us where to work, Sam.
26:39Thank you. Thanks for the, you are most effective circling numbers.
26:42I just realized that.
26:43That's what, that's this.
26:46It's your smart comes to a close.
26:49It's the Jets seven, the Patriots nothing.
26:52You're watching the NFL on NBC.
27:00Minus 15 passing because of the sack.
27:04Third down and eight.
27:06The Jets at the New England 16 as the second quarter gets underway.
27:11And Wright with the pump and then finds the opening inside the tail and a shoulder down at the marker.
27:20Willie Clay, lawyer Malloy, combined to make that stop.
27:24At five wide receivers in the game, man-to-man coverage on defense.
27:29As soon as Frank Wright started to run, there was nobody there because the defenders were running with the receivers.
27:35See how the pass rush goes by the quarterback.
27:38Now he's got to be careful how he not only ends the play, but how he holds on to that football.
27:43And he did pick up a first down.
27:45It is a first and goal at the seven yard line.
27:49He'll have Keyshawn Johnson split to the left.
27:53And Jeff Graham is to the right.
27:58Adrian Murrell.
28:00Short pickup.
28:02Met by Todd Collins, the outside linebacker.
28:06Todd Collins played at Carson Newman College with my son.
28:10I don't believe you knew that.
28:11No, I did not.
28:12Well, I'm telling you.
28:13Fascinating.
28:14Two years there at Carson Newman.
28:16They were national champions, NAI national champions, while Todd Collins was a linebacker there.
28:21Todd is back from his one-year retirement.
28:25Which did not please the Patriots last season.
28:30Second down.
28:31And goal at the six.
28:33That's Johnson, number 19 in motion.
28:36And Wright, able to complete.
28:39Richie Anderson, just short of the goal line.
28:44Get out by Lawyer Malloy.
28:47You know, we talked with Lawyer Malloy yesterday and asked, is there a story behind your name?
28:54I'm not talking about Malloy.
28:55I'm talking about his first name.
28:57He said his grandfather, LJ, wanted the name to start with L, went to the dictionary and came up with the name Lawyer.
29:06Could have been something like lampshade, Sam, so I guess he's fortunate.
29:11It all depends on where your thumb stops when you start thumbing through that dictionary.
29:16Third and goal at the one.
29:20Terrell, touchdown.
29:31And again, Bill Parcells takes a long walk.
29:35His team is now trailing the Jets.
29:3813 to nothing.
29:40Adrian Murrell with his fourth touchdown of the season.
29:45Jets are doing nothing tricky.
29:47Now, Dwyer is pulling just a toss sweep and using the pure speed of Adrian Murrell.
29:55I don't think in the entire first quarter, and certainly not in this drive,
30:00no trick plays, straight fundamental football.
30:03And Murrell flips a souvenir to the crowd.
30:08Eight plays, 29 yards in four minutes and 14 seconds.
30:13Jets getting the ball on that fumble with Bledsoe taking that hard hit.
30:18So the point after by Nick Lowry.
30:22It's a 14-0 Jet lead.
30:25Jets jumping in front of the Patriots.
30:2714 to nothing.
30:29Don Silvestri getting set to kick it off.
30:31Earlier this season, back in week three, remember the Jets led Miami 14-0 and lost that game 36-27.
30:41Excellent kick by Silvestri.
30:43And Megan has to remain in the end zone.
30:46They'll bring it out to the 20-yard line.
30:48On the touchdown just a moment ago, Fred Baxter, the in-man on the line of scrimmage has a,
30:53there goes our telestrator going crazy right here.
30:55On the far right of your screen right there, it's got the key block down the field right here.
30:59As he, as the off guard pulls though, he just cleans up and did his pure speed.
31:04Didn't get a lot out of that one.
31:05I'll remind you one other thing.
31:06Last week they were hit 17 to nothing in Arizona and led Arizona back in the game.
31:11But came back to win it.
31:13That was a 31-21 final score.
31:17This after the Jets had lost eight straight games.
31:20Curtis Martin is handled.
31:24Marvin Jones had a linebacker making his return today.
31:27Able to come up with that tackle.
31:29Let's check in again with Greg Gumbel. Greg?
31:32All right, Marv, in Miami, the Dolphins trailed Indianapolis 3-0 until Dan Marino hooked up with O.J. McDuffie.
31:39That's a 12-yard touchdown with the extra point.
31:41The Dolphins lead Indianapolis 7-3 early in the second quarter, Marv.
31:46Thank you, Greg.
31:47The Colts at 5-4.
31:49They are a game behind New England and Buffalo.
31:52Second down and 10.
31:54And the floating pass caught by Terry Gland.
31:57But he's immediately rocked by Chad Cascadden, who has made an impression here in the first half.
32:04Chad Cascadden, a walk-on of the University of Wisconsin.
32:09Backup linebacker and excellent special teams player in college.
32:13So he was a backup in college.
32:15And he is a starter now here in the NFL.
32:18That's due to injuries.
32:20Starting at right, linebacker.
32:22With Mo Lewis out of action.
32:25Third down and five from the 25.
32:30And the play is blown dead.
32:31It is called a sack.
32:33Hugh Douglas.
32:34And for the Jets, their second sack of the day.
32:37Very few players can come back and make this kind of an impact coming off of an injury.
32:43Usually you come in and measure yourself a little bit.
32:45But Hugh Douglas is playing with that old reckless abandon that you hear so much about from the olden days when the players didn't have face masks.
32:53This guy is a football player.
32:54Third sack of the season for Douglas.
32:56And Tom Schupper getting checked to punt.
32:57And you see the flags come flying.
33:02Mark, what's happening here?
33:03The Jets have their mind in the game.
33:04They just stop.
33:05Number 35 on the offense.
33:07Moving from the ball.
33:09And you see the flags come flying.
33:11And you see the flags come flying.
33:14Barb, what's happening here?
33:15The Jets have their mind in the game.
33:17Ball start.
33:18Number 35 on the offense.
33:19Moving for our base.
33:20So what's happening here?
33:21Well, you see the flags come flying.
33:22Number 35 on the offense, moving far to the snap.
33:27The five-yard penalty, still 4,000.
33:29Number 35 is the rookie backup running back, special teams man, Mario Greer.
33:36So Tupa will punt from his end zone.
33:39Tom Tupa's had an outstanding season.
33:42And he will punt to Wayne Trevath.
33:47Four minutes in, second quarter, and New England trailing.
33:5214-0.
33:54And a beauty by Tupa.
33:56Trevath with the fair catch at the 40.
33:59A 42-yard punt.
34:02Timeout taken.
34:03Jets with the commanding early lead.
34:10The next two games could be the telling point today against the Jets.
34:13And then next week, a major test against John Elway and the Denver Broncos.
34:18First and ten at the 40, and right.
34:21Had a bit too much on that intended for Richie Anderson.
34:25Covered by Dwayne Saab.
34:27All right, let's check in with Len Berman.
34:29Len?
34:29Well, Marv, as you know, Jets fans are among the most loyal.
34:32Another 76,000 to sell out, as always, to Meadowlands.
34:35And keep in mind, they have not come here to witness a home win for the Jets now over a year.
34:41It's a year ago, October, since they won on their home field.
34:44So, perhaps this is the day, although the Jets have frittered some first-half leads in the past this season, Mark.
34:50You know, I love when Len uses the word fritter.
34:52It turns me on, too.
34:53Oh, man.
34:55I can't get enough of that.
34:57Inside handoff, and Morrell, across the 45, would not go down,
35:02and picks up the first down.
35:06Saab and Wheeler combined to make the stop.
35:10Bill Parcells has made the point over and over to us
35:12that this is the best running back in the division.
35:15With holes like that, you can look like the best running back.
35:18You know, last week,
35:22Bill thought last week that he had some very poor play in one quarter.
35:26Look at the numbers right there on this game.
35:29That the second quarter was the worst quarter of the year.
35:32I wonder if he compares, how it compares to this game so far.
35:35I'd have to say, he put that first quarter right alongside last week's second quarter.
35:39Morrell could not make the turn.
35:42Adrian Morrell run out by Ted Johnson.
35:46And again, we'll check in with Greg Gumbel.
35:48All right, Marvin, we'll take you to Tampa,
35:50where the Bucs are hosting the Raiders.
35:52The pitch to Harvey Williams,
35:53and the Oakland running back throws his second career touchdown pass,
35:57an 18-yarder to James Jett with the extra point.
35:59The Raiders and the Bucs are now even at seven,
36:01six and a half to play in the first half, Mark.
36:04Thanks, Greg.
36:05Adrian Morrell has now carried the ball 16 times for 55 yards.
36:11Second down and eight.
36:13Graham to the left and Johnson right.
36:16Nine and a half to go in this first half.
36:19And right's pass on target for Kyle Brady.
36:24Bet by Ted Johnson, it has not been a good season offensively for Kyle Brady.
36:30That is only his fifth catch of the year.
36:33And you can hear the crowd react when he caught the ball.
36:35We were given the stat that 5% of the passing game goes to the tight end for the Jets,
36:40while 30% of the Patriots passing game goes to Ben Coates.
36:44So when Kyle Brady caught that pass,
36:47it was as if something really big happened here in Jetville.
36:51All right, just short of the first down, it's a third and one.
36:55Baxter in motion.
36:57Morrell with the running room inside the 20, inside the 15.
37:05And Lawyer Malloy was able to catch him and bring him down.
37:09It's a 26-yard run for Adrian Morrell.
37:13After Adrian Morrell bounces outside, watch him change speeds.
37:18Now, he doesn't change direction.
37:20He just changes speed to freeze.
37:21Right there, and then accelerates again.
37:23Everybody loses the angle.
37:27The Jets with a first down at the New England 13-yard line.
37:3481 yards, 17 carries.
37:38And a touchdown.
37:41The Jets looking for another.
37:43They're up 14-0.
37:45And Morrell with a nice hole.
37:47Offensive line is doing an outstanding job.
37:50Mike Jones on the tackle of Morrell.
37:53Well, Nick, and four, down at the seven-yard line.
37:58Morrell, straight up the middle.
38:03Ted Johnson made the stop.
38:07And it is a first down for the Jets.
38:10First and goal inside the two.
38:13This is just domination by the Jets' offensive line against the defensive line.
38:19Every time the ball is handed off, it's the linebacker or the safety that makes the first hit on the running back.
38:24You know that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of Miami and Thurman Thomas, Buffalo, Terry Allen, all of them have had big days against this pad defense.
38:36First and goal.
38:38And it's Morrell, despite he has stopped, lost a half-yard on the play.
38:46What a job by the offensive line.
38:49The combination of Jumbo Elliott, Harry Galbraith, Roger Duffy, Matt O'Dwyer, David Williams.
38:56Harry Boatwain has also been on the field.
39:00It's a second and goal just outside the two-yard line.
39:05Ninth play of the drive, and the pattern has remained the same for the Patriots.
39:09The opposition has had the ball most of the time, but in those other games, Patriots were able to get on the board, usually quickly.
39:16Not the case here in the first half.
39:20Play action.
39:22Wright with the long look.
39:24Incomplete.
39:25And a flag down.
39:26Todd Collins with the coverage on the tight end, Kyle Brady.
39:30They're going to call interference in the end zone.
39:32That puts the ball in the one-yard line.
39:35Pass interference.
39:42Number 50, on the defense.
39:44The interference occurred in the end zone.
39:46The one-yard line first down.
39:48The penalty, really, is Todd Collins reaches with his right hand and grabs the receiver as he crosses the field.
39:57And really, at the line of scrimmage, when you're faking a pass, or faking a run like that,
40:01you're legal at the line of scrimmage.
40:02But once you start moving down the field, you can't continue to grab.
40:07It is a first and goal at the one.
40:12And here's Morrell for the touchdown.
40:15Well, Bill Parcells expected problems, but not to these lengths.
40:29He is now trailing 20-0.
40:32I think he expected a battle.
40:35Rich Cotite told us Friday that his team was still playing tough.
40:39They hadn't quit.
40:39And it showed up in previous games before they're having their way today.
40:44That has so often become a cliche when you hear that a club still playing hard, although it's been a bad year.
40:50They haven't quit.
40:51But it is true with the Jets.
40:53And as you know, Sam, it's so difficult to keep a club together when the season is going so poorly.
40:59This team was 0-8 and then won in Arizona two weeks ago.
41:03Nick Lowry with the extra point.
41:05A flag is thrown.
41:13So a penalty marker is down.
41:18We have 5.58 remaining on the first half.
41:21And the call against the Patriots.
41:34Holding number 54 defense.
41:38Pulling the offensive lineman to allow his teammates to go after a kick.
41:43The penalty is going to be assessed on the kickoff.
41:47Score is good.
41:48All right, so there you have the explanation.
41:50And now we can take a break.
41:52The Jets, 21.
41:54The Patriots, nothing.
42:00Gary Rice and the incomparable 49ers host the high-scoring Ravens.
42:04Or Dan Marino and the Dolphins face the Oilers.
42:07Or regional action.
42:08The NFL on NBC next Sunday.
42:13A splendid first half for Adrian Murrell.
42:16Just scored the touchdown from a yard.
42:18Fired out 41 yards from Murrell alone on that last drive.
42:21And a terrific kick by Don Silvestri.
42:26They'll bring it out to the 20-yard line.
42:29The touchdown just a moment ago.
42:31Ted Johnson, the inside linebacker at the top of your screen.
42:34His job is to fill the hole that Adrian Murrell just ran through.
42:39You can see from the end zone view right here.
42:41Watch the linebacker run across the field.
42:43Adrian Murrell just cuts back behind him.
42:45In a gap defense like that at the goal line, the linebacker's job is to fill that particular gap.
42:50The New England Patriots have had the football only five minutes and 13 seconds in this first half.
42:59And Bledsoe going incomplete intended for Terry Glenn.
43:05It'll be a second and 10 at the 20-yard line.
43:08Let's check in with Len Berman.
43:10Marv, here's the fellow who caught the ball that A.G. Murrell threw up into the stands after the second touchdown the Jets scored.
43:16Pete Maturko of Morristown, New Jersey.
43:18Big Jets fan?
43:18Big Jets fan about 35 years now.
43:21This is the high point of my 35 years.
43:24Next to name it in the Super Bowl.
43:26All right.
43:26Stop down after the game.
43:27I'll get Murrell to autograph it for you.
43:29I appreciate that.
43:30By the way, Marvin, Sam Murrell has fined $500 worth throwing this ball up to Pete.
43:35Back to you.
43:36All right.
43:36Back to you, Len.
43:37Curtis Martin stopped by Hugh Douglas.
43:40And again, the reaction.
43:43Hugh Douglas with a very strong first half making it back from the fractured right ankle suffered against Miami.
43:53In game three, at first it was thought he'd only be spotted in passing situations
43:58with Mike Zielinski, but he has been in there most of the way.
44:02It's a third and 11th at the 19-yard line.
44:12Bledsoe.
44:15Oh, it was wrestled by Sean Jefferson into a completion.
44:21The Jets nearly came up with their third interception on a ball that was tipped.
44:26Four wide receivers on a third and long.
44:30It's a turn-in pattern by Sean Jefferson.
44:32And Drew Bledsoe is babying the ball.
44:35He's not putting a lot behind him.
44:36Now, this one, he gets almost tackled as he releases it, but he's not stepping into his throw.
44:41He's just laying it out there.
44:42That one is a fight between Aaron Glenn and Sean Jefferson, and Sean Jefferson wins the battle.
44:48Only the second completion from Bledsoe.
44:50So it's good for 16 on a first down, and again a soft pass, and the good coverage by the Jets.
44:56Curtis Martin taken down by Mark Spindler, and Marvin Jones picked up three.
45:02It's a second down and seven.
45:04This is easily the best drive of the first half for the Patriots, who have not been able to get anything going.
45:11First two possessions, they were stopped on interceptions, then the fumble by Bledsoe, and then forced to punt.
45:18Bledsoe's over, warming up between series, trying to keep warm.
45:21He's just not throwing the ball at full force right now.
45:24Second and seven.
45:27And here's Mark.
45:28Trying to pick his way, but he is stopped.
45:32Stopped behind the line by Marvin Washington.
45:3521-0, the Jets on top.
45:40A Jet team that has owned or shared last place for 31 straight weeks.
45:46A Jet team that lost its first eight games.
45:50They come off a bye week.
45:52In their last game, two weeks back, they won at Arizona.
45:56Eight straight losses, 12 straight, going back to last year.
46:02Third down and seven.
46:04And Bledsoe, with his best-looking pass of the day, able to complete for the first down.
46:10Lotta Young on the tackle of Troy Brown.
46:14Stepped into that throw and snapped the wrist, and you could tell by the flight of the ball.
46:19A nice, tight spiral that time.
46:21The ball has been kind of porpoising, kind of bobbing as it flowed through the air,
46:24up until this particular throw.
46:26That one tight as a, you can get it right in the middle.
46:28And it's good for 16, Troy Brown, in his fourth season out of Maryland, coming up with only
46:34his eighth catch of the season.
46:37And a first down of the Jet 47.
46:41Bledsoe with the screen for Martin.
46:44Has running room.
46:45Has the blocking.
46:46Cuts inside.
46:48And is able to move inside the 30-yard line, where he was tackled by Victor Green.
46:52And that's good for 21.
46:55Screen play set up.
46:56That time they brought Terry Glenn in short motion.
46:59He came across the field and became a blocker.
47:02You'll see Glenn come across the field as Bledsoe sets up.
47:07Looks one way.
47:08Throws back to the other side.
47:10Good blocking.
47:11You know, since the offensive linemen can extend their arms all over the field,
47:15I've often said that the screen pass and the sweeps ought to be bigger parts of the offense.
47:19And a first down at the 26 that fires in motion.
47:24Two-minute warning.
47:27So when we come back, it'll be a first and ten for the Patriots at the 26.
47:35And the Patriots with their most impressive drive.
47:38First down at the 26 in Jet territory.
47:41And a wide open Terry Glenn.
47:45Able to score.
47:46That's his third touchdown of the season.
47:51A 26-yard pass play.
47:53And obviously a breakdown on the part of the Jet secondary.
47:57The Jets brought one linebacker and tried to play zone, or at least outside technique.
48:02Aaron Glenn, you see at the top of the screen, he's sitting way outside looking in.
48:06Terry Glenn made a nice little move.
48:09Just froze Aaron Glenn.
48:10And that's why he got open.
48:11That was a one-on-one victory.
48:12Eight plays, 80 yards, four minutes and three seconds.
48:18Adam Minoteri for the extra point.
48:24But a demonstration as to how explosive the Patriots can be.
48:30It is now 21-7, Jets.
48:33A minute 55 left of the half.
48:39Fighting a blocker.
48:41Beautiful return across the 25.
48:44It's a 27-yard kick return.
48:47Marty Moore on the stop.
48:50And Drew Bledsoe, off that last touchdown pass to Terry Glenn, went over 13,000 career yards.
48:58The youngest player in NFL history to pass for 13,000.
49:04A week ago against Miami with 59 seconds left.
49:08Drew Bledsoe led him 65 yards for a score.
49:11He got a nice big hug from Coach Bill Parcells.
49:14I don't know if he got one this time.
49:15And those are rare hugs from Bill on the sidelines.
49:19In his first half, he got a hug and a noogie, I think, from Parcells.
49:23Wayne Crevet with his first catch of the day.
49:26Wayne Crevet with catch number 52 comes in tied for fourth in the AFC in receptions.
49:36Otis Smith, the tackle around the play.
49:39Otis Smith, a one-time New York Jet.
49:42It'll be a second down and two.
49:44There is Otis, played four years with the Eagles and a year with the Jets.
49:51A minute 44 to go in the first half.
49:55Inside handoff for Anderson.
49:59And he has a first down.
50:02Well, tonight on Dateline,
50:05what you don't know about your minivan, Sam,
50:08just lost you.
50:09A Dateline exclusive.
50:11And then they say this pill can improve your sex life.
50:17Is this a miracle drug or medical madness?
50:20That's Dateline Sunday later tonight here on NBC.
50:23Ritchie Anderson.
50:26Stucked by Otis Smith.
50:28And it is a first down.
50:29It's a 15-yard play.
50:31And remember, they used two of their timeouts earlier by not getting the plays in in time.
50:36Only one left in this drive.
50:38And they're in the hurry-up.
50:40Diving catch by Crevet.
50:44That's a Crevet specialty.
50:45Otis Smith on the cover.
50:48Picked up five.
50:53It'll be a second down at five.
50:57Ball of the 42-yard line with 57 seconds to go in this first half.
51:02It's the Jets 21 and the Patriots 7.
51:06And right overthrowing Crevet, who was open.
51:21He was covered by Corwin Brown, but Crevet had a couple of steps.
51:26They're just out of field goal range right now.
51:28They need to get another first down.
51:30They've got one timeout left, and you would like to say that as an offense
51:34so that you can get your field goal team in there.
51:37But this is the crucial down right here.
51:39Else they'll be just out of that field goal range with 53 seconds left.
51:45Frank Reich, 10 of 15, 99 yards.
51:48One touchdown.
51:50Starting for the fourth straight game for the injured Neal O'Donnell,
51:53who the Jets say is at least two weeks away.
51:55They hope to get him back for the game against Buffalo.
51:57Right off the puck.
51:59And a beautiful catch.
52:01The diving catch by the rookie, Alex Van Dunn.
52:04Van Dyke, covered by Ricky Reynolds for Van Dyke.
52:08His first reception.
52:10And it is a Jets first down at the Patriot 32.
52:15We're down to a half minute remaining on the half right.
52:18Firing, but comes up short.
52:21Trying to go right back to Van Dyke this time.
52:24Looking to go deep.
52:26Covered by Hitchcock.
52:27Still with just one timeout left now, having used up two of them earlier on.
52:33But they're in field goal range right now, so they can afford to put it down the field, take their shot like that.
52:38This one either has to go out of bounds, or they're probably going to call a timeout.
52:42And there's 29 seconds left.
52:43It's hard to reassemble for another play if the clock is running.
52:46Although this would be a 49-yard attempt by Nick Lowry, who has struggled recently.
52:52He's had a knee problem in recent weeks.
52:55One of the reasons they brought back Don Silvestri for kickoffs.
52:58And again, the inside handoff.
53:00Anderson gets inside the 30, but the crowd questioning that play.
53:06The clock is running.
53:08They have to run a play.
53:09They can't ground it.
53:10It's third down.
53:12They have the one timeout left.
53:13Third down at eight.
53:15And right going deep.
53:17Oh!
53:19Jeff Graham had an opportunity, but could not make the catch.
53:24He had Lawyer Malloy beaten.
53:26Low coverage by the New England Patriots.
53:29I don't know what they were thinking.
53:30They looked like they were playing a normal distance there instead of covering for the down-the-field throw.
53:37Center fielder Malloy just can't get there just off the fingertips of Jeff Graham.
53:43And Rich Cotighton, every coach has been through that one.
53:46There's nothing you can do but watch it happen.
53:49So here is Lowry.
53:5348-yard attempt.
53:56He line drives it wide to the right.
54:00And Nick Lowry continues to struggle after the good start.
54:04He is now 9 of 15.
54:08Four seconds remaining.
54:11You know, we were out there Friday.
54:12Lowry was in the training room getting treatment on his knee.
54:15He's just trying to stay healthy for those instances right there.
54:19Wasn't good enough this time.
54:21It'll be New England in possession.
54:25Four seconds to go in the half.
54:28Going to be a big second half here, Marv.
54:31New England has gotten back in this ball game as poorly as they play, turning the ball over,
54:36playing almost as if they're unaware of what's going on out there.
54:40They're only two scores away.
54:41Well, they turn matters on that 16-yard catch by Sean Jefferson on a third down and 11, where the Jets again had a shot at an interception off a deflection.
54:53And Bledsoe dumps it off to Megan.
54:55See what he can do with it.
54:57Down the sideline.
54:59Had some running room, and that is bumped out of bounds by Victor Green.
55:02And that's how the first half comes to a close.
55:0527-yard pass play.
55:07So at the half here at the Meadowlands, the Jets with a surprise in front of the Patriots at one point left, 21-0.
55:16It is now 21-7 at the half.
55:20Let's go to Greg Gumbel at our studios in Manhattan.
