02:20conclusion
02:35Just kidding!
02:40¡Ahí, mamás!
02:45Here it is.
02:51This is the bike that I want to do this next trip on.
02:53A 1974 Motoguzzi El Dorado Californian police bike.
03:15Silly okay don't tell Charlie I'll scare the shit out of him one day it does look a bit
03:26like it came out of a river and I love that as you can see you know most of my
03:31stuff looks like that because that's what I love I've always enjoyed collecting
03:35and riding old motorbikes and I thought I want to go on one of my bikes but who
03:40knows if it's gonna perform it's an old bike we'll see hopefully there'll be
03:45people that know how to fix it better than I if it breaks I've always ridden
03:50Motoguzzi's it was my first big bike my mum and dad had never let me get a more
03:55bike and I finished drama school and I thought god I I can do it was a
04:00revelation I could do what I want now I don't have to have their permission you
04:05know and I fell in love with it and it changed my life I just love them to death
04:10you know I just think they're brilliant shouldn't say that I just love them
04:14knock on touch wood don't love them to death you and for Christ's sake
04:18motorbikes are dangerous enough as it is you know what I mean this time we're
04:22leaving in June and it'll be summertime so it'll be pretty nice I think I don't
04:27know how nice it'll be up here we can cut back to me saying that when we're
04:32standing in the icy rain somewhere I think it's gonna be amazing
04:40these big trips they're a luxury I am aware of that stepping out of your everyday responsibilities
04:47as a dad and as a husband hi baby boy there's a sort of freedom to it we don't
04:54normally have in our adult lives how are you you're surprised you surprised me
05:02what a surprise hello my love how's your feelings not well oh no what bubba
05:15daddy I want to go in it you want to go in well you can do you want to come in
05:21Laura I've got to shut this door ready you want to do it you pull it one two three go boom you did
05:30it do it again do it again one two three boom you did it one more time again this is gonna be the one
05:45I've been thinking about taking an Italian bike so I'm gonna meet this dealer who specializes in
05:59Moto Italiano look at this this is similar kind of look as the one that Ewan is gonna take I thought
06:09it'd be really nice to to get something of sort of a similar age then you're gonna be looking at
06:14something like the 900 GTS really nice bike left gear change electric start electric stock sounds
06:21amazing just because of so many accidents recently well the last six years just destroyed my legs I
06:28smashed my legs really badly in 2016 I got clipped by a car and then hit a wall and had 27 operations
06:37to to get those right again and then just before doing long way up I had a terrible crash much much worse
06:43I woke up in intensive care and I'd had a massive brain injury and I broke my pelvis my forearm was
06:51snapped backwards all the bones came out and I collapsed this whole left side of my my lungs the ribs were
06:57smashed collarbone was broken when I went into intensive care I was I mean it was awful seeing Charlie and so much pain
07:13how was that Charlie it's good I don't know I thought it would be under the circumstances confidence he had
07:27to then be pinned back together and I think that was really hard for Charlie and very hard for you know us
07:34all now finally I've been able to sort of start to walk better and can do stuff but there were still
07:48things like kick-starting and I'm struggling with
07:50of course you know you think oh gosh he's off on another trip I just hope that we're not going
08:03to face another accident and he's done with them but then he rides more carefully now especially at his
08:09age and he's excited about being on another adventure with his great friend Ewan and they always have the
08:16most incredible time sounds beautiful oh well there you go well this is a real possibility I like it
08:29Ewan's just coming in a minute it's now four minutes late we're meeting Russ and Dave to discuss the new
08:43adventure and also to celebrate our 20 years of making long way I'm gonna share my live location with you
08:52Ewan I think the relationship that Ewan and I have together each person gives it gives something to
08:59the relationship oh there you are I don't know that anyone knows me as well as Charlie I thought you
09:04I thought you were this game in the spur of never ever knowing where the we are Ewan is a very kind
09:12person and he's very loyal certainly very loyal to me he understands me tremendously well really that's
09:20what makes him a nice friend that's my daughter Dune Ewan's known Dune since she was six months old
09:27yeah I keep saying to Dune and Dune and I'm going up to Manchester and go do some work and they laugh
09:34I said what are you laughing for they go work work really really it's not as easy as it looks it's not as easy as we make it look you know exactly that's what I say every time I say that
09:47all right mate what kept Jack got a bit lost he got lost in Manchester
09:54long way to you oh my god it's a 20 years anniversary today yeah
10:01long way dear long wayers and Ross and Dave oh wow oh look at that hey miles and miles of smiles
10:14and then the pro one two three three ah congrats mate well done 20 years superb wow you don't look a day
10:26older no thank you don't feel it you ready for the map yeah well we got to go there look how beautiful
10:32it's going to be yeah god I can just smell the fresh air I don't know Scandinavia and I love the idea of the
10:39countryside up there the Norway coastline it looks rugged and spectacular and the sort of fjords that
10:46you hear about in Norway okay so now we're getting to the top of um Norway Svalbard so it's about as far
10:54north as we would go reasons to go global warming that's Svalbard is supposed to be the litmus paper of the
11:00world you know the ice is melting and so if we wanted to go down and talk to glaciologists we
11:05could also camp on the glacier and there's polar bears up there we have a time to go I think we
11:12should do it yeah you tend to forget about the places that are on your doorstep that adventure
11:17that isn't that far away from home I love the planning of it I love the dreaming up of the trip
11:22and then you can't stop sort of dreaming about it until the day you're you set off and we're coming
11:28back through Finland now naked saunas yes well I don't know I think I might need a little more
11:37detail whatever I said whatever Charlie does I'm not going to let him go talk to me I'm not letting
11:43him dangle alone the camp shop is just over there tent options look at that oh yeah oh it's magnetic
11:58oh that's quite clever so you can look for both bikes my room both your room oh this one yeah
12:07that's what I slept in after we split up and long way round oh you slept in that time you had our two
12:12man tent and you and I had this little when we had the divorce pissy little thing you know but not
12:18that I'm bitter about it in any way or well holding on to that it's just give give for me that's what
12:24you often find I think it saved our relationship you know having that sort of divorce on the
12:28Russian steps what I remember was just how quickly you fell asleep so we'd go in he'd lie
12:34down and I get I'd lie down I sort of set myself down he'd be asleep already like out and then I'd lie
12:41there like just listening to Charlie being asleep and then there was snoring you'd snore in the
12:45night I'd snore in the morning in the morning and it was it was just didn't work okay let's go
12:50look at other tricks stuff so I've got two of the I bought two of these oh yeah so that I've got two
12:56litres of extra fuel for us if we need it sharing okay caring caring and I know are you taking a
13:09plastic horse with you or not well I'm not gonna take you're not gonna you're not gonna take yours
13:14I'm gonna leave my plastic horse because last time I just got damaged and it's difficult to sort
13:21of squirrel it away isn't it really and you know what to do with it really what to do with your
13:25plastic horse go outdoors get up and get off your sofa it's the name of a shop and it's also like a good
13:38piece of advice
13:39I love doing a long way up so much with
14:08Charlie and our team I'm really really excited about it
14:12you're not meant to ride a motorbike when you're making a movie if you were to fall off and break a
14:23wrist or something it would stop the machine so miss it and when you're on a film every single thing is
14:32decided you know you and pick you up at this time gonna do these scenes this is what you can have for
14:37lunch and you don't really have any decision-making and then when you're on the road afterwards
14:43everything's in your own hands again and it's nice of taking back and ownership of your own self
14:49what do we need to do today on it well I'm just gonna leave it with you okay all right yeah there you go what about his new seat so this would sit this would sit up there I'd be able to open the boxes yeah I think a brilliant seat
14:56okay here's an old one we can okay this one might match the bike a little yeah

16:27Watch around and see what's around?
16:29No, it's not easy looking for motorbikes.
16:30I know, I know.
16:33I am just saying to the boys...
16:34That I think I have to put a little games console here.
16:38So I've got something to do until I get your bike running again.
16:43You know, fantastic.
16:44Well, at least you know the bike.
16:45I haven't even got a bike.
16:46You will find something perfect, Charlie, I know you will.
16:49All right.
16:50See you, Charlie.
16:51Lots to love, mate.
16:52See you guys later.
17:38We took electric vehicles last time, had a gran experiencia, así que preferirlo.
17:42We know that area is very strong with regard to renewable energy.
17:46We don't know so much about this.
17:48Pero chances are, if the distances aren't that great
17:51and we've got decent range in the vehicles, we shouldn't have a problem.
17:53OK, I'm in. Electric, decision made.
17:56Finally, I think I've got the motorbike to ride on the trip.
18:06BMW R75, I really like it.
18:10Modern but retro at the same time.
18:12So, my love, finally, the bike should be arriving now.
18:18Oh, look, here it is.
18:20That's it.
18:21Look at that timing.
18:23Hello.
18:23Oh, gosh, it's in a lot worse state than I thought.
18:30Shit.
18:31Oh, there's rust everywhere.
18:36Panicking slightly, because there's quite a lot to do on the bike.
18:39Time is really against us now.
18:42We literally have weeks to go.
18:44Oh, my God.
18:45This is a mess.
18:47Oh, well, I'm glad it's here.
18:50Anything that's metal-y is just rusted.
18:52The whole engine needs to be redone.
18:55A whole lot of electrics need to be done.
18:58That's okay.
19:01You ready?
19:01Okay.
19:02Here we go.
19:03Okay.
19:04Here we go.
19:05Okay.
19:06Woo.
19:07First ride.
19:08Woo.
19:09Well, she is pretty.
19:10She really is pretty.
19:11I like it.
19:14Moore's finally finished working on the bike, and I can't wait to see what he's done with
19:31It's nice to be on a bike that I know already, that I'm not getting to know on a trip, but I already have history with it.
19:44Hello?
19:45Hello.
19:46Hello there.
19:47Very nice.
19:51Oh, that looks like it's ready for doing some miles now.
19:54Good work, man.
19:56Oh, it looks great.
19:57You've got your extra fuel.
19:59Everything's got fresh oil.
20:00I love it.
20:01I'll be doing a lot of miles, and I want to make sure nothing happens as I cross my fingers.
20:06It looks like it's ready.
20:10Look at that.
20:12Oh, I like this.
20:13This is nice.
20:14It's quite useful being able to see through it, isn't it?
20:17Fire it up.
20:23Very nice.
20:24Sounds like it wants to go to Scandinavia.
20:27That's what I think.
20:28All right, let's go.
20:29All right, let's go.
20:38Oh, yes.
20:39Oh, yes.
20:52I love it.
20:53I just love it.
20:54It's like before, but better.
20:56Fantastic.
20:57I'm ready to go.
20:58Do you need some water or what?
20:59No, it's all right.
21:00I just swallowed a fly or something.
21:02Ha, ha, ha, ha!
21:05It's fantastic.
21:06I'm ready to go.
21:07Do you need some water or what?
21:08No, it's all right.
21:09I just swallowed a fly or something.
21:10Ha, ha, ha!

22:27He's holding the bike up there in mid-air.
22:30Leave it in your hands.
22:31Thank you very much, Chance.
22:32You're very welcome.
22:34How about that delivery?
22:46Ewan has always been the organized one,
22:49so once again, I'm playing catch-up
22:51to try and get my bike ready.
22:57Did stuff arrive?
22:59Yep, this is our camping gear.
23:01Turned up just in time.
23:02That's fantastic.
23:04This is the spade for digging our toy, Nick.
23:07Oh, look at that.
23:09Shut up.
23:12Everyone, hold on.
23:14How's it going?
23:15I think very well.
23:17We're having a production meeting.
23:19Somebody on the team, I'm not sure who,
23:21they bought a poo shovel, the poo shovel.
23:24It's the McGregor brand.
23:27I couldn't, don't.
23:28We're on brand.
23:30That's my main worry,
23:33is that it's such a huge one.
23:36Just need a little trouble.
23:38How are you, Ewan?
23:40I'm good, I'm good, I'm good.
23:41I'll be up in Scotland from the 27th we arrived.
23:44Start packing my bag, you know?
23:46Is everything sorted from your side?
23:48Yeah.
23:48Got myself all set up,
23:49and then my dad had organized a couple of my bikes,
23:52and Scotland needed their MOTs,
23:55so he organized a couple of his mates to come and pick them up.
23:58I got an email the next day saying,
24:00Ewan, we got the bikes MOTed, everything went fine,
24:03but both of the boys and myself,
24:06I've got major concerns about the motorcycle
24:08that you've chosen to do this trip on.
24:09All right, lots of love to you all, guys.
24:17Kevin has just arrived.
24:19He said he's pulled an all-nighter,
24:20getting all the electrics done and everything like that.
24:23Interested to see it.
24:24Okay, that's good, Kev.
24:26Welcome.
24:27What a ride.
24:28Long way.
24:30You were burning the candle last night.
24:32Well, what would normally take us two months,
24:33we've had to cram into two days.
24:37Wow.
24:39Well, look at that.
24:40You put the new starter motor in, and...
24:42Yeah, new starters in there.
24:44New silencers.
24:46Because they were just rusty as anything.
24:48That's brilliant.
24:50Jeez.
24:51Wow.
24:52A thing of beauty.
24:53That is, um...
24:54I know, it's gorgeous.
24:55Oh, and that's the, that's the, um...
24:56Root beer.
24:57The root beer.
24:57Not black, not brown, not gold.
24:59Root beer.
25:00Oh, my God, that is...
25:01Have you got it?
25:01Yeah.
25:02Sure.
25:06Okay, go further down.
25:08Doesn't matter.
25:08We'll pop them in now.
25:10That's it.
25:10Hey!
25:11Beauty.
25:12That's brilliant.
25:13Well, thank you for that.
25:22Laurie.
25:24Are you hiding from me?
25:26Where are you?
25:27Laurie.
25:28Mate, how are you?
25:33We're here.
25:35Well done.
25:35Isn't it amazing?
25:36Yeah.
25:37Good to see you.
25:38Oh, my God.
25:38Oh, good to see you.
25:39You've been bloody raging.
25:41Whoo!
25:42Here we are, number four.
25:43Number four.
25:44No shoes on the carpet upstairs.
25:46So, let me just show you quickly where all your gear is.
25:48Oh, yeah.
25:48We can go through it all and make sure we've got the right stuff.
25:51Laurie, so...
25:52Hi, there.
25:53There.
25:54Want to see Laurie?
25:55Where's Laurie?
25:56Whoa!
25:58Did anyone see that boy, Laurie?
26:00That's very good.
26:02I'm going to show you how to ride on my bike.
26:05That looks too fast for you.
26:07Are you sure you're old enough to ride that, Laurie?
26:08Whoa!
26:10Oh, you know you can steer a bit.
26:13Steer a bit to go around the corners.
26:15Whoa!
26:15Uh-oh!
26:16That's it.
26:17That's a good steer.
26:20See ya.
26:21Should we go have a look at the bikes?
26:22Yeah.
26:22Or is that what we're going to do?
26:23Let's do it.
26:25Here we are.
26:30Well, now that they're side by side, I think they look like quite a splendid pair.
26:35They do.
26:40I'm just going to put my heated grips on you.
26:44Not that, you know.
26:45Do you have a pair of heated grips?
26:47Do you know what's funny?
26:48I opted not to go for heated grips, just for the sake of originality.
26:53Come on, baby.
26:57He's got...
26:58I'm very jealous of his brakes.
27:00He's got twin discs.
27:02He's got twin disc brakes.
27:04Good stopping power.
27:05I've got a little old shitty drum break.
27:08Hmm.
27:10Well, you'll probably be in the lead, so...
27:13So long as I miss you.
27:19So, David put his phone here.
27:21Okay.
27:22And then Laurie was in playing with Rachel, and he was bouncing, bouncing, bouncing, and David's
27:26phone fell down the back.
27:27And it's just taken us about an hour.
27:30And we have to get it out.
27:31One, two, three.
27:34It goes down for ages.
27:36You can't even touch the bottom.
27:39Oh, shit.
27:43One more, a little bit.
27:44Wait, wait.
27:44How did you all do your backs in before the trip started?
27:48Tell you what would work.
27:50Tongs from the kitchen.
27:51Something a pole with a sticky thing on it.
27:53The lady who did the food has got a telescopic magnet.
27:56No.
27:58Okay, here.
27:59Is there another thing that we could use?
28:02I don't think it's going to be magnetic.
28:03It's not going to be magnetic.
28:04It's not picking it up.
28:06What's it called when they stick a camera up your bum?
28:08This is going to work.
28:09It's turning off.
28:10It's turning off.
28:10It's turning off.
28:10It's turning off.
28:11It's turning off.
28:12It's turning off.

28:57Oh, no.
28:58¡Morning Rusty!
29:05D-Day, D-Day
29:07Yes, yes, yes
29:08The big one
29:09Since the last one, 2019, the world changed and we're stuck for a while
29:17And for the first time in a long time I got used to being at home
29:21How are you guys feeling that we're all leaving now?
29:23Fantastic
29:23No, seriously
29:27If you could lie and just say, you know, I was tossing a towel all night in bed
29:32And I think Ollie and I got used to it and now suddenly we're leaving each other
29:36It's mixed emotions
29:37Yeah, there you go
29:41As we've been doing our preparations here, it's also just been getting closer and closer
29:44To having to say goodbye to Mary and Laurie
29:48That's the hardest bit of all
29:52Well, that's it Charlie, if you've forgotten anything
29:55It's too late
29:58Really got a nerve, nervy feeling on my
30:01Self
30:02My school pipe band, gonna arrive, Morrison's Academy
30:06I used to be a side drummer in this pipe band and my dad before me and my uncle and come for a long line of drummers
30:12And my dad, he's arriving with them shortly and then the idea is they'll play a set and then we'll get off
30:19Oh, here they are right now
30:21Dad, massive band, isn't it?
30:24God, there was like nine of us in my band, the band I was in
30:27That's right, I know, I know
30:28I know

30:30Gets the hairs on the back of your neck
30:32Bye, Larry
30:32Quick, march
30:34March
30:46This is all far too emotional, I have to say
30:51Sorry, I'm gonna cry
30:52All right, it's gonna be all right, don't worry
30:54It's gonna be all right
30:55It's gonna be all right
30:56Don't worry about us
