00:00Davey Moore. Let's go back to a fight that he had a little bit earlier tonight with a fellow by the name of Tony Suero.
00:05This is round four. Davey Moore in the red trunks with the white stripe.
00:09Right now on the right of your screen, Tony Suero in the white trunks on the left.
00:13And Suero, we should mention early in this fight, had really taken it to Davey Moore pretty well.
00:18And he had only lost one of ten fights, and he took something out of Moore early on, but Moore persisted.
00:25Moore had a problem with his mouthpiece, which, Larry, you mentioned also was the case in the last time we saw him here on HBO,
00:35which, again, was on the card with Marvin Hagler and Fulgencio Obamaias.
00:39And he had the same problem here in this fight.
00:42Cut himself.
00:43Here you see his dance act here.
00:46Wants to steal the show.
00:48What I loved about this fight here with Tony Suero was that he was a very game kid.
00:59Very game.
01:00Suero gave Moore a pretty good shot early in the second round.
01:06And that's probably as good a shot as Davey Moore had taken in his four previous fights.
01:11He's only had one knockout coming into this fight.
01:13That was in his last fight, so that was kind of a confidence builder.
01:18And Davey Moore's confidence was growing with just about every punch.
01:34There you saw a pretty good whistling left hand.
01:36Even though it hit up on the shoulder, it still slowed up, Suero.
01:39Outstanding right hand there by Davey Moore.
01:41And that was just about the coup de grace, the beginning of the end for Suero.
01:45If you remember, we thought that the referee should have stopped this fight here a little bit earlier than what he did.
01:51Now, Suero took a pretty good beating.
01:52You didn't see him bounce off the ropes.
01:53You could almost tell at that juncture that he really had nothing left.
01:56And you saw Davey Moore just measuring his man and hitting him with both hands.
02:07Suero virtually defenseless.
02:08And as you mentioned, Marvin, we did say ringside here that perhaps this fight should have been stopped just a little bit earlier.
02:14The man was pretty much defenseless.
02:15Well, on things like that, that's the referee's fault.
02:22I think that they don't like to be criticized afterwards for calling maybe a wrong decision or something for stopping the fight too early.
02:30But I believe this fight here should have been stopped a little earlier than what it did.
02:34And there again, Davey Moore just issuing all kinds of punishment to Tony Suero.
02:49And at this juncture, it was just about the end of the end.
02:54And that was it.
02:55The referee steps in, stops it.
02:56Suero at this point is saying, is this Syracuse?
02:58Is this Buffalo?
02:59Or am I in Chicago?
03:01And Davey Moore was the winner of his fifth consecutive fight.
03:03Second knockout in a row.
03:05Quick lap of the ring.
03:06And Suero just takes a breather and says, well, we'll have to try it again next time.
03:11So we're really getting a look at a lot of good young fighters who are just up and coming.
03:15They all been tested tonight.
03:17They really have been tested.
03:18I think that, as Larry Merchant mentioned earlier, is a credit to the promoters of this fight who have matched these guys,
03:22not against guys who are going to take a fall early on, but just guys who are going to give them a pretty good test.
03:27Very good fights tonight.
03:29Very good fights.
03:30And I believe that all this can do is help the other fighters.
03:33To keep them moving.
03:35Give them that great incentive that, hey, there is, I can be a champion.
03:40How long does it take, just going back in your own career, Marvin, before you can go in the ring there and really kind of take charge?
03:45Really go in there and say, this man is here for me and I'm going to take care of him.
03:49And it's my ring and my business and I'm going to be able to do my job.
03:52Well, Barry, you know the first thing that most trainers tell you is to go out and fill the guy out first, not unless you really have the good skinny on the guy.
03:59So I believe that this is how most of the fighters were tonight.
04:04They went out, filled them out the first round, knew their job, what they had to do, and just went about it.
04:09I think that brings up a good point, too.
04:11Sugar Ray Leonard, we know everything about Sugar Ray Leonard.
04:13Larry Bonds, the guy who he's going to be fighting in just a little while, we don't know anything about Larry Bonds.
04:18Is that going to be a problem, you feel, just as you mentioned, for Sugar Ray Leonard tonight?
04:22No, I believe that it's going to take Sugar Ray Leonard a couple of rounds really to figure out the southpaw style.
04:27Leonard has fought a couple of southpaws before, so it really shouldn't take him that much, that longer, you know?
04:33He says he hasn't had any trouble with sophomores.
04:35Sophomores, I've done it again, southpaws.
04:37But in this case, and if you look at the record, he actually has.
04:40He went the distance with one of them.
04:42He did manage to knock the other one out in four rounds, but this is only the third left-hander that Sugar Ray Leonard has fought.
04:47Well, you know, you need that.
04:49You need to fight a couple of southpaws in there because in this game here, hey, the southpaws are out there.
04:57The question is for Larry Bonds, and he himself has said this.
05:00He said, I can't go out there and try to knock Sugar Ray Leonard out.
05:03That's just a ridiculous thought.
05:05I've got to go 15 rounds, and I guess that's the kind of attitude you have to have.
05:09No, I think that's the wrong attitude right now.
05:11He has to be very positive and very confident in himself that he can win this fight.
05:16And he knows that this can be his future.
05:19If he knocks out Sugar Ray Leonard, all the money is going to come his way.
05:22All the fights are going to come his way.
05:24His biggest problem, which we said, why his record shows that he hasn't had that many fights,
05:28was because he said that he was having trouble getting the fights.
05:32Well, I think that's one of the big issues at hand.
05:33He has only fought seven rounds in the last 11 months.
05:36And I think while you look at most fighters and you say it's the fighters' hands that really make the difference,
05:40I'm not too sure, but that it's not the fighters' legs that really make the difference.
05:44And that's going to be a big question mark for Larry Bonds.
05:46I believe that Sugar Ray Leonard is going to come out with a lot of speed here that's going to dazzle him.
05:50And like we were saying earlier, Bonds can't let Leonard get his rhythm together.
05:54He's got to confuse him with his Southport style.
05:57Well, Sugar Ray Leonard is the guy right now.
05:59He is the welterweight champion of the world.
06:00But, you know, this has been a division with a history.
06:03And the footsteps that Sugar Ray Leonard has to fill have been filled in the past by some pretty big names.
06:09Remember?
