00:00and out. Thanks a lot, Brian. You talk about a contrast of styles. You talk about the next
00:05bout here on Showtime Championship Boxing. The puncher Alfredo Angulo versus a very slick boxer
00:11Erislandi Lara. It's coming up here at 154 pounds and a look at El Peto, which means the dog who is
00:192-0 since being released from the El Centro Detention Center in California, where the Mexico
00:24native had been held for Immigration Matters, coming off a 10-round unanimous decision win
00:29against Jorge Silva. Silva giving him a much tougher fight than anticipated, jumping up from 140 pounds
00:34to 154, but he feels, Al, that he is finally finding his rhythm. He finally is in the condition he needs
00:40to be to be at the top of his game. Virgil Hunter, his trainer, when I was in his third fight with
00:47Virgil, told him it would take about a year mentally and physically for you to get back. This is exactly
00:51a year, so we'll see. And his opponent, Erislandi Lara, a Cuban amateur standout. 320 wins, 10 losses.
01:02The 152-pound gold medalist at the 2005 World Championships went into his last fight with a
01:08fractured knuckle on his right. Lead hand, and that turned out to be a ninth round to technical
01:13draw against Vanus Martirosian. A lackluster affair in November, and he definitely has
01:18his sights set on bigger fish to fry, the first being Alfredo Angulo here tonight.
01:25Let's go to the tail of the tape for this 154-pound affair. Erislandi Lara, the supreme master
01:33technician in the ring, would like to use the height and reach advantage there, the reach advantage that
01:38he has, and he would like that to keep Angulo at bay. Lara does not like to fight on the inside,
01:45and look at the weight. Angulo, a much bigger man as we come into this fight, and he's the power
01:52puncher, so let's see how that impacts this. So Angulo heavier, Lara has the big reach advantage.
01:57Let's go to Joe Martinez for the official introductions.
02:02Ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening once again. We welcome you to the Home Depot Center here,
02:07in Carson, California, for our next featured ballot of the evening, Mexico Contra Cuba.

02:30with the California State Athletic Commission and sanctioned by the WBA. Introducing your three
02:36judges scoring this ballot at ringside. From California, Max DeLuca. From California,
02:41International Boxing Hall of Famer Marty Dinkin. And from Nevada, Robert Hoyle. And when the action
02:48begins inside the ring, your referee in charge, Raul Cainz Sr. And here we go, five fans, 12 rounds
02:55scheduled this for the vacant WBA Interim Super Welterweight Championship of the World.
03:06Introducing to you first, fighting out of the red corner. Wearing the colors of his homeland of Cuba,
03:11white, white, red, and blue. From Guantanamo, Cuba, now fighting out of Houston, Texas, USA.
03:18Wearing it officially, 153 and three-quarter pounds. His professional record stands, 17 victories.
03:25One defeat, two bouts, even, and 11 wins coming by way of knockout. Rated as the number one WBA Super
03:32welterweight contender in the world. Please welcome El Oro de Guantanamo, Erislande Lara.
03:49And next is opponent across the ring, fighting out of the blue corner. He wears black,
03:53trimmed in silver, and fights out of Los Angeles Califas. Nacido de Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.
04:04Wearing it officially, 153 and one-half pounds. This veteran brings 22 victories,
04:10two defeats, and 18 knockout wins into the ring tonight. Please welcome the former WBO Interim
04:17Junior Middleweight Champion of the World, the number three WBA Super Welterweight Contender
04:23of the World. Here is Alfredo, El Perro Angulo.
04:34Once again, a referee in charge of the action, Raul Cain Sr., with the final instructions.
04:39The third man in the ring is referee Raul Cain Sr. We are set for tonight's co-feature,
04:47a very compelling 154-pound matchup. Alfredo Angulo, known for his knockout power as Landy Lara,
04:56the slicker, the quicker. Many people feel definitely the more superior boxer.
05:00But the great equalizer is that one-punch knockout power, who will be able to impose his will and
05:10skill on the other. We're about to find out as the bell goes. Round number one underway.
05:14Angulo with the black with silver trim trunks. Lara sporting the white, red, and blue.
05:29I know we've set this fight up as Angulo the puncher and Lara the boxer, but we just saw a
05:35straight left hand land by Lara. He can throw that punch with authority and has already landed it twice
05:41in this fight. And his trainer, Ronnie Shields, feels he can hurt Angulo with that left hand. The
05:46conventional stance fighter, Angulo the southpaw, Lara.
05:50There's actually more movement early from Lara than I even anticipated, because he doesn't always
05:57move this much in the fight, even though he's so good defensively.
06:01It might be the power, the anticipated power of Angulo that's making him a little bit more careful.
06:05And remember, the only time that Angulo's been down in his career was against the southpaw,
06:10James Kirkland, en route to the knockout loss. The last time Angulo lost.
06:17I love the way this fight's starting, though. This is turning into a very interesting fight.
06:22Lara's willing to engage, Angulo's ripping to the body, wants to come forward. Can't be anything
06:27but fun if it keeps up like this. And now Angulo digging away at the body with the left hook,
06:32doubling up, tripling up on the jab upstairs. Lara just absorbing all the shots with his guard.
06:38There's a straight left hand down the middle by Lara. Flashes the jab and moves away.
06:42You talk about the sweet signs. You talk about a guy like Erislandi Lara, one of the most
06:48technically proficient fighters in the game, Paulie. Yeah, yeah. And a former Cuban amateur standout
06:54comes from that Cuban amateur school. So, you know, those guys always technically sounded...
06:58Oh, stiff. Straight left by Lara. That's the fourth one that Lara has landed that is solid missed
07:04in this first round. 11 of Lara's 17 wins have come via form of knockout.
07:10Of course, Angulo known for the KO power. 18 of his 22 victories have come inside the distance.
07:16And there, Lara hurting Angulo with the straight left hand.
07:21Part of the game plan Virgil Hunter told us yesterday for Angulo was to hit
07:25Lara everywhere. Doesn't matter. Don't aim for any particular spot. We get close and hit him.
07:30And Lara is starting to get... Lara is starting to get his rhythm here.
07:33He's had a monster first round. The 100th professional round of Angulo's career. The 99th round
07:40as a pro for Lara. And a great start by the Cuban.
07:4430 seconds remaining in the opening round. And really good coming back because early on,
07:48Angulo was really stuffing, stifling him and really getting in his face and trying to
07:53really beat him up to the body. But Lara stayed calm and started landing those sharp shots.
07:57Uppercut by Lara. Then he just shows up again. Angulo trying to get through the guard with the jab.
08:04Final 10 seconds of a pretty good opening round here, especially if you're the Cuban
08:09Arislandi Lara. Marking his territory. Angulo walking him down, but it's Lara coming forward
08:14with a couple of straight left hands. That's been the story thus far.
08:18We talk about the left hand. Lara landed so many in the first round. Uses the jab as a rangefinder
08:26and blasts away with that left hand. Let's look at the keys to victory. Angulo has to push
08:32Lara to the ropes. He did do that in the first round, but had a hard time landing. The uppercut,
08:36I think, could be a big weapon for him in the double F2. We saw a little bit of that in round one. He's
08:41gonna have to unload that punch more. As for Lara, he really did exactly what he's supposed to do.
08:49He used the angles. He did tie up Lara on the inside whenever he got there or covered up and left hand.
08:56Oh yeah, we saw a lot of those. Lara's never been down as an amateur or a pro.
09:14The last three opponents against Lara have landed, in fact, the last five opponents have landed 20%
09:19of their punches or less. So his defensive skills are considerable. Angulo immediately attacking the
09:25body, digging away with the left hooks. But Lara just keeping that peekaboo guard,
09:32taking a lot of those shots, although Angulo was able to dig underneath. And Lara again,
09:37measuring him up for that straight left hand.
09:38Here are the show stats for the first round punch totals. You see what Lara, he lands at a high
09:50percentage and landing at 50%, which is a lot better as we see than 7%. And Angulo traditionally
09:57throws a lot more punches. He averaged 80 punches a round in his last fight. So he throws a lot of
10:02punches, but when they're not landing, that's not going to help you too much.
10:05And Angulo known for his pressure style. Come forward and there, he was able to sneak the
10:10right hand through the guard, but Angulo just absorbing the majority of these shots,
10:14catching these shots on his arms there, Pauli. Well, even when he catches the shots,
10:18he's punching in between Angulo. You see, he kind of starts covering up,
10:21and then he'll come up with some short counter shots.
10:25Very crafty, Eris van der Waal. So far in this fight, Angulo is pushing his punches. We
10:30haven't seen him set down and throw the kind of power punches that we're accustomed to.
10:35Well, here's the thing, Al. It's hard to get confidence to throw so hard when you know that
10:39counter-punching ability of your opponent is so sharp. You almost start to doubt it,
10:42and what happens is your snap comes off your shots without you realizing.
10:46And Lara already marking up the face of El Perro, utilizing his footwork very effectively
10:51here in round two. It's almost like you're looking to throw punches,
10:55but at the same time, you want to bring your hand right back to defend.
10:58Uppercut by Angulo. A couple of left hooks to the body.
11:03And Al, to your point, doesn't really appear that he's hurting Lara with a lot of these punches
11:07because of the fact he's pushing them. Yeah, he's not throwing them with great commitment.
11:10Now, he did start to unload on the upper side. There's a nice straight left through the guard
11:13by Lara again. Even those left hooks to the body, they're good. You're supposed to throw those,
11:18but he's not getting leverage on those, Angulo, as much as he'd like.
11:21Final minute of the second round. Great start to this 154-pound co-feature between
11:26Erislandi Lara, the southpaw, and the hard-hitting Alfredo Angulo.
11:37Front face walk there by Lara's. Raul Caiz Jr. intercedes. We've seen in other fights
11:42where Angulo switches to left. He's done in this fight several times, but not with great
11:47purpose or intent. Blood already on the bridge of the nose of Alfredo Angulo.
12:00Now, Angulo has Lara on the ropes. Right hand behind the guard. 10 seconds left.
12:09So, great start here between Angulo and Lara, and two great trainers in their respective corners.
12:15Virgil Hunter and Angulo's running shields in love.
12:22All you got to do is breathe. He's slowing down, huh?
12:26Keep breathing.
12:29You're going to be ugly when it's over, but we're going to be winning, Brady.
12:34You're going to have some bruises, but we're going to win this fight.
12:37You see how he's slowing down? You keep hitting him in that liver, in that kidney.
12:41He's going to slow down, Alfredo. He keeps getting you that. He's slowing down already.
12:46Because punches are going to get weaker and weaker.
12:49Way to go. You're not even breathing.
12:53Good job.
12:54The guy, his feet is all over the place. He's all balanced.
12:56He's all balanced.
12:57Come on, come on, come on.
13:03I got it. I got it.
13:04Come on, come on, come on.
13:06Come on, come on.
13:17Bell in round of three.
13:18Good observations by both corners.
13:20I like what Virgil Hunter was saying about Lara slowing down in the second half of that round.
13:24I noticed it as well. We'll see if he picks up the pace in this first half of this round
13:30or if Angulo can continue to break him down.
13:32While on the other end, Ronnie Shields made a good point too.
13:34Angulo's feet are all over the place.
13:38Lara working behind the jab.
13:42Keeping Angulo at distance, even though he's along the ropes.
13:45And utilizing that nifty footwork, left hand to the body.
13:48The only lefty that Angulo has fought in recent years was James Kirkland.
13:52And, of course, he had issues with him.
13:56And this is the ultimate lefty to fight.
13:58Yeah, I'd say.
13:59She's like the lefty out in, you know, that ate Cleveland.
14:04I'd say Kirkland was a bit more hittable a lot.
14:06Yeah, just the snids.
14:07And Angulo continues to work the body.
14:11Lara content to stay along the ropes. Now circles away.
14:14Straight left again.
14:21Pops Angulo on the nose.
14:23And Angulo has rips the left hook to the body.
14:27And now Angulo coming forward by the nice counter jab there by Lara.
14:32There's a difference in those left hooks to the body now.
14:35And Angulo is getting much more leverage at him, throwing them with much better intent.
14:39He's believing in them. He's believing in them because Virgil Hunter, the instruction he gave him,
14:43has him believing in the game plan.
14:45I couldn't agree with you more.
14:47That was part pep talk and part reinforcing.
14:50Guess what? This is going to be a tough fight.
14:51And Angulo beginning to find his rhythm now.
14:54Coming forward.
14:56As Lara utilizing his footwork, trying to escape again.
15:01Ripping the left hook to the body and a left uppercut as well.
15:03And now Lara fighting off the ropes.
15:10And you know, Angulo, we talked about in the keys about getting him to the ropes.
15:13He has gotten Lara to the ropes in the last round of the half.
15:17Another left hand of the body, another left hook and a right hand of the body by Angulo.
15:21So a good round for Angulo in the final minute of the third.
15:26Now Lara's counter punches are still there, but now they're fewer and far between.
15:29So it's Angulo's rough work that's taking the toll.
15:32The ball versus the Matador and thus far the ball getting the best of him here in the third round.
15:37You see the good shot by Lara, but it's just not consistent enough anymore.
15:4530 seconds left in what has been an entertaining third frame.
15:49There's a nice straight left right to the sternum by Lara.
15:53And you know, the book on Lara, and now you can speak to this,
15:57is that he hasn't always looked comfortable on the inside.
16:00And that's an area that Angulo would like to exploit.
16:02Yeah, he hasn't, but when he gets distance, he's punching well.
16:06But here at close quarters, Angulo getting the best of him in the final five seconds
16:11of a thrilling third round here at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
16:16Here's where Angulo was able to push him against ropes.
16:26Good leverage on those left hooks.
16:28He's ripping those shots and mixing in some of the uppercuts and other punches.
16:32Now, yes, Lara is counter punching pretty well off the ropes, and he did do that in some instances.
16:37But Angulo was able to get some work done by ripping shots to that body and occasionally
16:46getting those right hands in as well.
16:48And our Spanish announcers, of course, providing the Spanish commentary, Alejandro Luna and former champion Raul Marquez
16:58describing the action in Espanol.
17:02You can use your SAP button to hear what they're saying.
17:07Our great colleagues who do such a terrific job.
17:12So despite being battered and bruised, both fighters showing the vestiges of what has been a
17:19tough tussle thus far.
17:20Round four underway.
17:21And you notice on the back of Angulo's trunks, immigration reform now.
17:27Someone who can speak very highly.
17:30A traumatic experience that he went through.
17:32Yeah, and many believe he was inappropriately detained and held for seven months.
17:37And it was a brutal situation for him.
17:38And on the front of his trunks, of course, on his belt line, his daughter's name, Rebecca,
17:42the young lady he lives for, spends half the time of camp in Los Angeles with Herb,
17:46with Virgil Hunter coming down.
17:47And then he goes to Hunter's training camp as well.
17:49As we take a look at the unofficial scoring through three rounds.
17:52I'm curious to see how we have it.
17:54And by going, we're in agreement, 29-28.
17:56I'm guessing we all saw the third round for Angulo.
18:00And battering away at the body is Angulo.
18:04Lara stuck on the ropes.
18:08And now Angulo known to switch stances here and there, going to the south pond.
18:12You're not a big fan of that, are you?
18:13Well, he's done it a lot, but I don't think he does it with great intent.
18:16And I don't think it helps him in this fight.
18:17I think what he's doing is he's trying to create space for that left hand to the body,
18:20because against the southpaw, you're bumping leek shoulders.
18:23It's hard to get in the hook to the body sometimes from the inside,
18:26because he can bump you.
18:26He can kind of use his leek shoulder to bump you off.
18:29But as a righty, he's getting leverage out of him.
18:32And Lara goes down for the first time in his career.
18:38Oh, his body shot set that up, guys.
18:39And Angulo, the dog swarming.
18:46Lara here in the fourth round, a minute and a half left,
18:49popping the jab from the southpaw position.
18:52And now switches back to orthodox.
18:56And Lara trying to stave off the attack the best he can.
19:00The crowd here on Fuego, firmly behind the adopted California resident.
19:11Uppercut by Lara.
19:12And the chance of Paro filled the skies here over the Home Depot Center.
19:22Under a minute left.
19:33And Gulo has been cut under the right eye.
19:35He's had problems with cuts before in fights.
19:41And right now, he doesn't want that to emerge.
19:43But what a huge round for him.
19:46Uppercut just misses by Angulo.
19:48All those body shots Angulo throws,
19:50it kind of had Lara thinking body.
19:52And then he came up with a booming hook to the head.
19:56Kind of caught Lara off guard and surprised him a bit.
19:58And through all this, Lara is still counter-punching back.
20:02That's from making this such a fun fight.
20:06Ten seconds left in a fantastic fourth round of action.
20:11Lara going down for the first time in his career,
20:13but continues to counter-attack.
20:15Round five straight ahead.
20:16For the first time in his career,
20:30Arislane Lara goes to the canvas.
20:33Angulo had been working hard to the body.
20:46And then the left hook over the top.
20:49And of course, that's Angulo's best punch we saw in many other fights.
20:54In fact, it really is almost a double left hook because he landed to the body.
20:59And that helped set up that left hook that set Lara down.
21:03Props to Arislane Lara for getting up from that punch and for being able to continue.
21:08And now got caught while he's throwing that left-hand uppercut.
21:11It was working so well for him.
21:12And props to Angulo for making the adjustment.
21:15He kept getting caught with it.
21:17And Angulo returned from detention,
21:21landed a lethal left hook against Raul Caceres,
21:24knocking him out in just 56 seconds.
21:26And in the last round, he knocked down Lara for the first time in his career
21:29with another devastating left hook.
21:32And round five underway.
21:33Maura Ranallo, Al Bernstein, Pauli Malignaggi, Brian Kenney,
21:37Jim Gray, and the rest of our Showtime sports crew bringing you the action.
21:43Angulo sparred with Dmitrius, Andrade, a very good 154-pounder.
21:50And he thought that got him prepared for this fight, and apparently it did.
21:54Taking a look at the power punches in round four.
21:59Angulo with the edge, but you see Lara did land his share of counter punches.
22:03But still, that knockdown, of course, created a 10-8 round,
22:07and the fact that Angulo landed so many big shots to both the body and the head.
22:11Angulo utilizing the jab.
22:15Lara trying to utilize the footwork, but the more Angulo works to the body, Pauli,
22:19the more he's going to slow down Lara's footwork.
22:21Well, that's the whole plan.
22:22That's the whole plan behind the attack to the body, to slow Lara down enough to make him stand still.
22:27If you can make him stand still long enough, you can land shots like the one he landed last round
22:31that scored the knockdown.
22:32A jab by Lara.
22:33Lara started this round well, though, pot-shotting and sharp-shooting.
22:37Unofficial scores.
22:40Clearly that turned things around.
22:42The 10-8 round on all our scorecards, and we all have it.
22:45A one-point edge at this point for Angulo.
22:47Three-punch combination by Lara, culminating with a nice right hook.
22:57So far, a nice comeback round for Lara.
23:03But again, he's languishing on the ropes and squaring himself up on the ropes.
23:07Shoulder bump by Lara, the jab.
23:12Angulo misses with the right hand, heading into the final minute of the fifth frame.
23:17Lara utilizing the footwork, circling away from the ropes, but nice combination by the Cuban.
23:23You know, not everybody gets up from a left hook like that from Alfredo Angulo.
23:29So, props to Ursulani Lohr for that.
23:33And down for the first time in his career, but can you blame him?
23:36He took such a flush left hook.
23:40And has showed amazing poise since that moment.
23:43He's having a great round.
23:44Yep.
23:49Edward Jackson worked with him as a strength and conditioning coach who,
23:53ironically, works with Andre Ward of Virgil Hunter's other major fighter, of course.
23:58And so, Jackson's helped him.
23:59Oh, brother.
24:00Good combination.
24:01Nice combination by Lara.
24:02Stung and Angulo, but Angulo comes right back along the ropes.
24:06A terrific fight here between Lara and Angulo.
24:19And coming up immediately after this entertaining affair,
24:22Andre Berto, who will face Jesus Soto Karas July 27th here on Showtime, will be speaking to our own
24:28Brian Kenney.
24:29We'll hear from him, his thoughts on tonight's fights, and, of course, his big matchup with Soto Karas later this summer.
24:35In a very big comeback round for Erislandi Lara, after getting knocked down, he threw some excellent combinations.
24:46And this is toward the end of the round, where Angulo was trying to pressure him, but Lara landed some excellent combinations in the round.
24:55And electric atmosphere here at the Home Depot Center.
25:15They're even doing the wave.
25:16I thought that had been banned by society.
25:20You can still do it, I think.
25:21I think it's legal.
25:22Sixth round underway.
25:27And an impressive bounce back round for Lara, and really so much at stake in this fight, Al.
25:34Or Pauly, with the 154-pound weight class, as hot as it is these days, we know what's out there.
25:40There's Miguel Cotto, Austin Trout, even the winner of Canelo Alvarez, Floyd Mayweather.
25:44Yeah, and the winner of this bout puts himself in a good position to get one of those fighters, one of those big-money fights, and deservedly so.
25:51And then, going to the body, look at Alfred Angulo, landing 40 to only 2 for Lara.
26:01And, of course, much of Angulo's attack has been downstairs.
26:06And he got away from throwing really good left hooks, but now look at him ripping those hooks to the body of Lara.
26:16Jab by Lara, straight left hand, and lead straight left hand by the Cuban.
26:21There's the jab again.
26:22Angulo trying to find the distance, trying to keep Lara along the ropes.
26:26Catches that punch.
26:27I almost feel like Lara's been sharper, if you can say that, since he got knocked down.
26:31Almost, you know, he was having a good couple of first rounds, but he's been just a little sharper with his defense and his offense and his movement.
26:39Angulo missed with a couple of left hooks, but then caught him on the body with a left to the body.
26:44And let's take a look at the unofficial scores.
26:48Dead even.
26:48I think you can make, you can almost make the perfect case, Steve Farahut, for this being a draw at this point.
26:57No doubt, Al.
26:58And I think it's actually been a very easy fight to score round by round.
27:02This round might be the most competitive so far.
27:05I agree.
27:07The jab key in this round for Lara.
27:11Angulo misses with the wild left.
27:15When Lara keeps his fight in the center of the ring, he almost can't lose it.
27:19But when he goes to the ropes, he's got issues.
27:21You see Angulo waving him on with his hands saying, come on and fight.
27:26But Lara will try to continue to pick his spots.
27:28It's amazing what each does very well.
27:31They've actually been able to execute very well.
27:33Precisely.
27:35Two well-prepared fighters' time.
27:47Contrast to Styles, but the ingredients put together thus far has been a very tasty recipe.
27:55With 20 seconds left in the sixth.
27:57At close quarters, Angulo launches the right.
28:01Lara backing up and delivers the nice one-two combination.
28:07Leads with the straight left, followed up with the right hook.
28:09We are at the midway point of this 154-pounder field.
28:17And start turning that right hand in his chair.
28:31And turning that left hook to the body in the head.
28:34You can do it.
28:36Alfredo, you can do it.
28:38Okay?
28:39It's all determination.
28:41There's no big rocket science thing.
28:43He's exhausted.
28:45He's only been the clean shot.
28:52He's getting it all day long.
28:55Who wants to get out?
28:56I'm going to score and get out.
28:58That's it.
28:59I got it, baby.
29:00Oh, Madipo Center in Carson, California.
29:04My first time here, and I already can tell you my favorite venue for boxing.
29:08An amazing crowd, an amazing atmosphere, and amazing Southern California weather out.
29:13Yeah, it's a great setting.
29:15We've been here for many great matches.
29:16You referenced the third Marquez-Vasquez fight.
29:20That was a special night.
29:21And tonight's starting to turn into one with this excellent match.
29:24And a record crowd in attendance for this triple header
29:30on Showtime.
29:32Thus far in round seven, Lara able to land some clean combinations, Paulie.
29:37Yeah, yeah.
29:38He's been on.
29:39I like the way he came back after the knockdown.
29:41He showed a lot of poise.
29:43To get knocked down the way he was, he was certainly hurt.
29:45He's come back and shown poise and maturity here.
29:50Now picking Angulo off with the jab.
29:53Angulo trying to find his way in.
29:55Good defense there as Lara ducked underneath the lead left hook.
29:5916 of the 18 KOs Angulo has had have come within the first five rounds.
30:04So history's against him winning by knockout at this point,
30:08even though he had Lara down.
30:09But we'll see.
30:13He's added a little bit of that jab right hook to get him out of danger.
30:17It's been just an addition since the knockdown that has allowed him to vary a little bit more
30:22to his offense and his defense.
30:23For Lara.
30:24Yeah, for Lara.
30:26After winning the first two rounds in blooding Angulo's face, Lara was knocked to the canvas
30:31a minute 15 into round four.
30:32The first knockdown of his career, but has bounced back very nicely.
30:37And we are in a war here of attrition.
30:39Angulo on the attack.
30:41Four beautiful left hooks to the body by Angulo, delivered with authority.
30:45That's what was missing in the last round or two.
30:48And as part of his comeback since being down on the canvas for the first time,
30:53Lara exhibiting good ring generalship, but Angulo continues to be in his face.
30:59And Lara gets on the ropes, and he's not looking to stay there anymore.
31:02He gets up there.
31:03He's covering up.
31:04He's not trading much.
31:05He throws a punch, covers up, or throws a punch and gets out.
31:09Which is the appropriate strategy for him, right?
31:11Absolutely.
31:11Almost seems like Lara's willing to let Angulo empty his arsenal,
31:15and then either pivot away, circle away, or launch an attack of his own.
31:19Well, in a way, I think the first two rounds made him a bit overconfident.
31:22You know, and that's what made him get caught in that third round.
31:29Has the fight exceeded your expectations in any way thus far, Pauli?
31:35Um, you know, I could have seen this happening, but I can't say I would have guaranteed it.
31:39You know, uh, I wasn't sure how Angulo would deal with the movement and the boxing ability of Lara.
31:44He's dealt with it very well, and he's making Lara work very hard for every round.
31:49And it's interesting because late in the fight, we'll see just how much energy Lara has left.
31:54Well, and those body punches will... could have an impact as this fight goes on.
32:01Fifteen seconds left in the seventh round.
32:05Funny, because Virgil Hunter said at the end of the second round, or the first round,
32:09he's getting tired. It's almost like Lara got rejuvenated just by getting knocked down.
32:14Straight right by Angulo. Good exchange at the bell.
32:17Now, this is a round that Lara won, but the reason we're going to show you these body shots
32:31is to kind of do some foreshadowing about what happened. Four terrific body shots.
32:38Will this pay dividends later for Angulo? Because he's landed so many of these.
32:43He gets in position, throws with, I think, a lot of authority.
32:47He's throwing pro really excellent left hooks downstairs. I mean, he just keeps banging away
32:53with that punch, and a couple actually stray a little bit low, but he's committed to that punch,
32:58and we'll see if that has an impact on the movement and everything else of Lara's as this fight goes on.
33:03You need those right hands, okay?
33:06Wow, what an edge. Yeah, just a smidge.
33:10I'm telling you, you ain't no fight. You in it. Don't let him off the hook no more.
33:14Angulo battering Lara's body, but Lara utilizing his technique, his footwork, the jab,
33:21and there it is, launching the straight left hand to kick off round number eight.
33:33Lara landed 33 punches to only 14 by Angulo, according to show stats.
33:38And, you know, Lara's being forced to throw more punches than he normally does.
33:42He threw 64 punches in that last round, and look at those nice counter punches.
33:46And the counter lefts are again beginning to find their target. Sorry, Paulie.
33:50No, no, that's a good point I was making. You know, Angulo finds himself always in front of Lara,
33:54and Lara finds this guy always in front of him. The only way you can get away is if you've got
33:58to keep punching. You can't just keep running. So it's forcing the output to be higher for Lara,
34:03and again, between that and the body shots, it'll be interesting to see how much energy Lara has left late.
34:07Angulo just right in front of Lara, absorbing the punishment, but dishing it out as well.
34:13And really, he has looked the best we've seen. Of course, 56 seconds was all it took for him to win
34:20his first fight in a year. And then in his last fight, maybe a tougher test than anticipated against
34:28the smaller Jorge Silva. But in this fight, Lara and Angulo putting on an amazing display thus far,
34:36a minute 40 remaining in the round. You know, what we haven't seen in this fight,
34:40there have been clashes of heads in a number of Lara fights. He was even penalized against
34:45Hernandez for head-butting, and of course, there was a clash of heads in his last fight that caused
34:50the stir. We have none of that in this fight. Yeah, you see a lot of it with the conventional
34:54versus the southpaw fighter, but you're absolutely right, Alan. Rather surprising,
34:57considering Angulo's style. Yeah, absolutely. And they've been inside at great length.
35:02You know, a lot of times, those head clashes happen when both guys look to punch at the same time,
35:06and a righty-lefty, their heads get close. I don't know if Lara's looking to punch any time.
35:11Angulo's looking to punch. He's trying to get out and...
35:13Lara getting busy with the right hooks now. A minute remaining in the round.
35:20There's a left hook by Angulo now at close quarters. Some short uppercuts.
35:27Lara's hands are down, getting busy. Nice. Left hand, but Angulo counters with a combination of his
35:33of his own, to the body, and then upstairs. And we're finally seeing the uppercut emerge
35:38for Angulo, and it's making this a much closer round.
35:43Right hand by Angulo connects. Lara contends to be on the ropes and
35:49just kind of baiting Angulo in, it seems. Left hand of the body.
35:58Nice combination right down the middle by Lara.
36:01Angulo leaning in now. I like what Angulo's doing.
36:05Anytime Lara stands still, he just moves his hands, hits him anywhere he can hit him.
36:12Well, this has been a fantastic fight thus far, and yet it's just the appetizer.
36:17The main course is coming up later tonight, and we are anticipating nothing but
36:23a brawl, a war, a action-packed affair between Marcos Maidano, who has one of the highest KO rates
36:31in the sport. The highest in the top 20, the welterweight division, although most of that came
36:35at 140. And there's the relaxed Josecito Lopez. He put himself on the boxing map in 2012 and now wants to
36:43make the most of it in 2013. Rolando Perez, he can't wait for Maidana versus Lopez. He, like many others,
36:51anticipates a great fight. That's still to come tonight. Maidana versus Lopez in the main event.
36:57And a look at this amazing atmosphere here outdoors. Carson, California, Home Depot Center, record crowd
37:07in attendance. And Angulo and Lara laying it all on the line as we head into the ninth round.
37:14Lara in the white, red, and blue. Angulo in the black with silver.
37:36Conditioning thus far doesn't really seem to be much of a factor for Angulo, considering
37:41the punch I'll put out. Well, he's taken, and he's taken a lot of punishment. He normally throws
37:46lots of punches and he's continuing as this fight goes on. But Lara has been the more accurate
37:52puncher in the last few rounds. The question is, can Angulo slow him down? Well, let's see what the
38:00unofficial scores show us. And a very, very close fight on Steve Farwood's scorecard. Well, Paulie and
38:07I have it a little bit wider. Steve, why so? This is going to be decided out in the last three,
38:13four rounds. It's really a matter of a will at this point. And this is why some fighters train as
38:18hard as they do. Lara needs the legs, and Angulo needs the energy to keep throwing the punches. It's
38:22really a fascinating matchup. It remains so. Well stated.
38:25Left hand, downstairs, Apoconso Angulo throwing a bunch of punches in that combination. But it's
38:36Lara again, just picking him off with a nice straight one-two.
38:39Oh, and the left hook drops Lara for the second time in the fight.
38:53As Colin carved the left hook, Angulo, despite Lara's technical edge, just, that's the great
39:01equalizer, Paulie. And man, part of that was the fatigue. He hadn't moved as much this round,
39:05he hadn't gotten off as many punches this round, and Angulo was able to find him. And he's still hurt.
39:15Digging away at the bodies, Angulo now going upstairs, scoring on the body. Lara trying to
39:21just stave off this attack. The arch one in the final minute of the ninth.
39:35Lara doing his best to try to regain his faculties, but Angulo not giving him any space.
39:56Stationary on the ropes is a bad place for Lara to be.
39:59He doesn't have the legs to keep moving the way he wants to, though.
40:05What a remarkable second part of this trial for Lara, though, not going down again.
40:11And he comes back with a right hook and a straight right from Angulo. A fantastic round nine!
40:19What a fight, guys. What a fight.
40:21Well, it happened earlier in the fight, and it happened again.
40:38As Arislandi Lara moved to his left, or his right, excuse me, he got nailed with the left hook by
40:44Angulo. And good for Angulo for not throwing another punch when he was down. We'll take another look at it.
40:50The right hand is low. Came up with his chin up. And Angulo throws with great conviction.
40:58When you get hit with a left hook by Alfredo Angulo, you are going to feel it.
41:02Had his chin up in the air and he came out. Chin goes up, he goes down.
41:07And astonishingly, there was a minute and a half left in this round when that happened. Lara not only got
41:13through the round, actually did some good work. Although certainly it's a 10-8 round for Angulo.
41:18I loved our Showtime colleague Barry Tompkins' reaction to the knockdown. He's enjoying the
41:23action as well. He and Steve Barden doing a great job on Show Extreme. And here we are, round 10.
41:28Alfredo Angulo.
41:31Arislandi Lara.
41:33And a great job on Showbox, which he had some great fights last night.
41:38Can Lara do what he did the last time he got knocked down? Have a comeback round?
41:43Much more difficult at this stage in the fight now. Fatigue definitely sets in.
41:47Yep. Let's see.
41:48Straight left hand lands by Lara.
41:52Angulo just continuing to impose his will and power.
41:57And with the second knockdown, let's take a look at the unofficial scoring through nine rounds.
42:01That clearly a 10-8 round. And on Steve's scorecard, of course, it has Angulo now ahead.
42:07We have it very close, uh, Pauly and I. So this fight's up for grabs.
42:12And Lara, again, bouncing back here in round 10, putting together some combinations, using
42:17some head movements. So despite being down again, Pauly, he rebounds nicely.
42:21And I'll tell you what's impressive about Lara. Despite getting hit with two thunderous hooks
42:26in this fight that have dropped him, he still is very comfortable making Angulo miss by just an
42:30inch or so, or even less. I mean, the fact that you can stay calm when that firepower's coming your
42:35way, even despite when you've been knocked down, you know, it's very impressive and it shows the
42:39maturity of this guy and the experience. Because he had probably a million amateur fights in Cuba.
42:46He has to be careful though. His mouth is wide open and you can ask Victor Ortiz what that can
42:52lead to against Josecito Lopez. Total power punches. And you see, Lara's landed more than his share,
43:00but the two important ones are those hooks. Oh, and now Lara may have hurt Angulo with that
43:05combination. And Angulo's hurt. And he's stopping the fight. Wow. Unbelievable. What happened?
43:12He just turned his back. You talk about the ebb and flow of boxing,
43:18and just like that, this fight is over. Wow.
43:26massive hematoma. Look at me. I want you to look at me. Look up. Look out. That came out of nowhere,
43:47that left eye. Wow. And when he turned his back on the action, the referee had to step in.
43:54Wait, wait, wait, wait. Wait, wait. Wait, wait, wait.
43:57What is quick? Wait, wait. Wait, wait.
44:12Wait, wait. Hey. Hey. What do you got? Boom.
44:14That's no way to do this. You're right. You're right.
44:15All right. All right.
44:16Now, Virgil Hunter is indicating that his fighter was thumped. Let's revisit the action.
44:17That was bad. That was bad though.
44:19well lara threw i mean i dar was just throwing a punch so whatever happened it created this
44:24terrible situation to the eye now there's just this a couple of straight left hands
44:31still have might have been the first one the first one i think is the one that did it because
44:34they kind of grazed them and you know the point is those were just punches by lara so whatever
44:42caused that here here comes the left hand i mean that's just a beautiful straight left hand
44:49that's the kind of left hand he's been throwing all night out yeah i mean he didn't do anything
44:53that might have caught him yeah i mean that's possible but clearly that's not arislandi lara's
44:57fault and what a dramatic time of events despite being on the deck for the first two times in his
45:03career arislandi lara comes back and records an oppressive win as jim gray has got a report
45:10on what's happened let's go to jim gray in the ring mo i just spoke to raul okay he's the referee
45:16here in the ring he said he believes that he got caught and he fractured his orbital bone but when
45:21he turned his back he said that was it when he turned it back and was not willing and ready
45:26to fight and did not go down he said he had no choice he had to stop the fight mo and looking at
45:34that eye i mean how could he not stop the fight i don't know if he would be able to even continue uh
45:38polly a nasty injury and uh here with the official decision following a terrific battle let's go to
45:47joe martinez ladies and gentlemen the end comes at one minute 50 seconds round number 10 referee raul
45:55kai senior called the hall to the contest due to an injury sustained by angulo therefore we declare
46:02your winner by tko victory and now the wba interim super welterweight champion of the world
46:10el oro de guantanamo
46:12el islande
46:22evidence that laura can throw a pretty powerful punch as well as he injures the left eye of alfredo angulo
46:28improves to 18 1 and 2 out with his 12th win via form of ko we talked about it earlier in the fight
46:34there was the very real possibility that one of those left hands would do that kind of damage and
46:39it took a while in the fight but it did jim gray standing by with the winner
46:46all right mo thank you very much felix de jesus will translate
46:50what happened from your perspective that caused this fight to be stopped
46:54what happened from your perspective what happened from your perspective what happened to this fight
46:57well first of all i want to thank god and thank america for this great fight angulo is a great
47:24fighter he did uh throw me down twice in both rounds and there's nothing to take away from angulo
47:29he was just waiting to win this fight what happened what did he think caused this fight to be stopped
47:34because of his promoter his manager and his physical training that's why he came ahead in this fight
47:59and he was also throwing punches so it was a good fight referee told me that he felt that possibly he
48:06has a broken orbital bone and when he turned his back he could not continue with the fight did you expect
48:12that he would be able to continue
48:14he thinks that he started very tough in the first round and that his punches were losing
48:33force and that's why he knew that he had him at that point in time let's take a look at the monitor
48:38right here virgil hunter the trainer claims that you thumbed his fighter
48:45did you let's take a look at it this is what he is saying right there
48:50that was what caused the fight to be stopped
48:56there i'm seeing the reputation and it wasn't i didn't even and they are thumbless glove did you
49:01feel as though you are or were winning the fight at this time even though you'd been knocked down for
49:06two times the first two times in your career
49:19yes he feels that he was still winning the fight the only two rounds was when he hit the floor
49:23a rematch will you give him a rematch based on this circumstance
49:26first of all he wants to say hi to al hayman does he want a rematch and he said that he will
49:45definitely give him a rematch if al hayman wants it very good thank you congratulations all right mo back
49:50to you thanks a lot jim so dramatic turn of events here in carson california now let's take a look at the
49:59scores the official scores at the time of the stop and this demonstrates very much what we said during
50:05the course of the fight that this was a very very close fight those two knockdowns had a big impact
50:11and two of the judges had it for law one for angulo and our unofficial scoring as we take a look at it
50:17demonstrates that as well stefaro to add it for angulo and paulie and i for uh lara paulie barring
50:24a rematch laura stated that he would want to fight miguel coto after this fight you think coto
50:30wants any part of laura after this well you know it's up in the air you know we'll see where coto's
50:34going in with the direction of his career i'd love to see a rematch first i would too let's go to brian
50:39getty
