00:00Hey!
00:30The tradition continues on Showtime Championship Boxing when Henry Akinwande meets Jeremy Williams for the WBO Heavyweight Championship next.
01:00While the 8-year-old WBO has been fighting for recognition and respect, its heavyweight division has had an eclectic and exciting succession of heavyweight champions.
01:26Francesco Damiani.
01:30Merciless Ray Mercer.
01:33Tommy the Duke Morrison.
01:38Michael Fent.
01:42Kirby High.
01:45Riddick Big Daddy Bone.
01:47Riddick Big Daddy Bone.
01:50Bowe failed to fight number one contender Alexander Zulkin and was stripped of his title.
01:55Now, undefeated 6'7'' Henry Akinwande will face rising young star Jeremy Williams
02:03for the vacant WBO Heavyweight Championship.
02:07Plus, Mexico's Ricardo Lopez looks to defend his 105-pound title
02:12for a remarkable 16th consecutive time.
02:16It's Lopez versus Precha for the WBC strawweight title.
02:23And former heavyweight champion Tony Tucker is seeking yet another title
02:28as he fights for the NAVF Heavyweight Championship.
02:34Live from Fantasy Springs Casino in Palm Springs, next on Showtime Championship Boxing.
02:46Welcome to the Fantasy Springs Casino, the town of Indio, just outside of Palm Springs in the California desert.
03:04A majestic, picturesque setting, as tonight we bring you a championship tripleheader,
03:10including two world championship matchups.
03:13And in dramatic contrast, you'll see action ranging from the heaviest and the lightest weight classes in boxing.
03:21Hello again, everybody. I'm Steve Albert.
03:23Originally, tonight's main event was to feature top contender Alexander Zulkin, the 6'5'' southpaw from Russia
03:29against 6'7'' Englishman Henry Akinwande for the WBO heavyweight title, recently vacated by Riddick Foe.
03:36But earlier this week, Zulkin sustained a bad cut over his right eye in training, which required 12 stitches.
03:42So it was exit Zulkin, enter Jeremy Williams, as the replacement for what some say will be a more compelling matchup.
03:50Prior to the change, Williams was scheduled to meet veteran Tony Tucker for the vacant NAVF heavyweight crown,
03:55also on this card.
03:57However, Tucker will now face one David Dixon.
04:00Also tonight, in a bout that raises some skepticism,
04:04Ricardo Lopez, perhaps one of today's best fighters,
04:06faces a totally unknown Kitty Chai preacher in defense of the WBC strawweight title.
04:13For more, let me bring on my partners at ringside first to fight, Dr. Ferdy Pacheco.
04:17Ferdy, what challenge does this present to Akinwande with a new opponent in Williams?
04:22Well, I don't think the new opponent has anything to do with it.
04:24It's a quality of an opponent.
04:25He's prepared for a right-hander.
04:26But Jeremy brings heat, he brings fire,
04:29and it's incredible confidence that he's going to come out a champion.
04:32That's the problem today.
04:33He's fighting a guy that's well-motivated.
04:35And it's going to be a different fight than Zolkin, I believe.
04:38And while Akinwande is undefeated in 30 fights,
04:41his quality of opponents is questionable.
04:43Yes, he's beaten the best in Europe,
04:44but he's only been fighting U.S. boxers since last year.
04:47And arguably, his best opponent ever was Tony Tucker,
04:50who he beat by a close unanimous decision in a tedious 10-round affair.
04:55Tonight, young and hungry, Jeremy Williams faces Akinwande.
04:58With that, let's bring on our other partner, Bobby Ches.
05:00Bobby, is Akinwande in for his toughest test?
05:03Well, Akinwande trained for a different type of fight.
05:06He trained for a big 6'5", strong, heavy southpaw.
05:09And now he's got a guy who's got a lot of speed,
05:11a lot of foot speed, a lot of hand speed, good combination,
05:13very quick, better combinations, and also throws a lot more punches.
05:16So if he's not ready and adjusted to that style
05:18because he hasn't trained for it, he could have a problem.
05:20Could this be a tougher test than Zolkin might have been?
05:22Well, Zolkin, like Tony Tucker and Axel Schultz,
05:25the only other real test for Akinwande.
05:27They're big, slow guys.
05:29Akinwande's got a good, straight, long left hand, 6'7".
05:31He's monstrous in size.
05:33But again, if he doesn't adjust to that speed,
05:35Jeremy Williams does have,
05:36he's going to be in for a terribly long night.
05:38Well, as you can probably gather by the fact
05:40that we have shed the usual garb here of black tie and tux
05:43for the more cool and comfortable shirt sleeves,
05:46tonight we come to you from this outdoor venue
05:48at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California,
05:51where the weather could really take its toll.
05:53The temperature here at night, a sizzling 121 degrees,
05:59certainly a factor with the big men of the first bound.
06:02It is like a sauna.
06:05It is so hot here.
06:06Starting tomorrow, Bobby Chez will be fighting as a lightweight.
06:10As we approach the battle for the vacant
06:12North American Boxing Federation Heavyweight Championship,
06:14former IVF Heavyweight Champion Tony Tucker
06:17will take on David Dixon,
06:19a late substitute for Jeremy Williams,
06:21now fighting tonight's main event.
06:23The title became vacant when Alexander Zulkin vacated
06:26to try for the WBO belt.
06:29Well, these are not the best of times for Tony Tucker at age 37.
06:32He's lost three fights in a row,
06:34and, Bertie, you have to wonder
06:35if the true desire is there in the ring.
06:37I have to wonder, going back six months or a year,
06:40Tony's never fought up to par for the last six or seven months.
06:43He's lost three fights in a row.
06:45If that's not enough of a hint,
06:46if he can't get by Dixon and get by well,
06:48he should really think about hanging it up
06:50because he has not looked well.
06:52He has not done what he's supposed to do.
06:54So I think he should be considering an alternative to boxing.
06:58In fact,
06:59some thought that Tucker would retire
07:01following the loss to Akinwani this past December.
07:03And while he may have gotten a reprieve
07:05with tonight's late change in opponents,
07:07Bobby, should he continue,
07:09or should he hang up the gloves?
07:10Well, he actually hasn't won a fight since 1994 December.
07:13He's lost not only to Bruce Seldon and Akinwani,
07:16but he's also lost a rematch with Orland Norris.
07:18So right now,
07:19he is definitely on the decline,
07:20back-to-back-to-back losses.
07:22A loss here,
07:22I think,
07:23would definitely indicate
07:24it is indeed time to stop.
07:25But he is desperate for one more shot
07:27at the heavyweight title.
07:28With Larry Holmes and George Foreman
07:29fighting well into their 40s,
07:31anything's possible.
07:31All right.
07:32Let us take a look at Tucker's opponent right now.
07:35David Dixon,
07:36who became the opponent this past Wednesday,
07:38only four days before the fight.
07:41At least he didn't have very far to travel.
07:43South-Central L.A.
07:44Dixon,
07:44a record of 20-2 with one draw,
07:4618 knockouts.
07:48And Tony Tucker,
07:49no stranger to Dixon,
07:50who once fired with the former World War.
07:52Look at Tony TNT Tucker,
07:5652-5 with one no contest,
07:5843 KOs,
08:00a seventh-round TKO loss
08:01to Bruce Seldon
08:02for the vacant WBA heavyweight title.
08:05Starting his three-fight slide,
08:07the bout was stopped
08:08due to a badly damaged eye,
08:10you may recall.
08:10Then came the unanimous decision
08:12to Akinwande,
08:13and most recently,
08:14majority decision to Orland Norris.
08:16Tucker's last win,
08:17as Bobby pointed out,
08:18December of 94.
08:19You recall,
08:20he won the IVF heavyweight belt
08:21by stopping Buster Douglas
08:22in the 10th back at 87,
08:24but Mike Tyson took it away
08:2563 days later
08:27in what was the last time
08:28two reigning heavyweight champs
08:30fought each other.
08:30In two weeks,
08:31on July 13th,
08:32that distinction falls away
08:34when WBA champ Bruce Seldon
08:35faces WBC champ Mike Tyson.
08:39But we'll have more on that
08:40later in the broadcast.
08:41Let's check the numbers right now
08:42as we take a look
08:45at the tail of the tape.
08:48At 37,
08:49Tucker is nine years
08:50older than Dixon.
08:51The 6'5 Tucker,
08:52an inch and a half taller.
08:55Tucker weighed 244.
08:56Dixon,
08:57a whopping 277 pounds.
09:00And the three-inch reach
09:01advantage for Tucker.
09:02And the NABF rules
09:03for this championship fight.
09:05The scoring under the
09:0510-point must system,
09:06three scoring judges.
09:07No standing eight count.
09:09Three knockdown rule
09:10is in effect.
09:10The referee or doctor
09:11can stop the fight
09:12under California law.
09:14A fighter cannot be saved
09:15by the belt
09:15except in the last round.
09:16If an accidental foul occurs
09:18before the start of the
09:19fourth round,
09:19it's a no decision.
09:20If it happens after
09:21the start of the fourth,
09:22they go to the scorecards.
09:23Incomplete rounds are scored.
09:26So here at the Fantasy

12:09Just obey my commands,
12:11okay?
12:11Any questions?
12:13Okay, shake hands,
12:14give me a good fight.
12:15Good luck.
12:16And the final instructions
12:17from referee Lou Filippo
12:19here at Fantasy Springs
12:21at Indio, California,
12:22getting set for the
12:23NAVF Heavyweight Championship.
12:25Tony Tucker
12:26usually starts out
12:27moderately fast
12:28and gets sluggish
12:29in the later rounds.
12:31And he comes right out
12:32and so does Dixon.
12:34Dixon looking for the brawl,
12:36going wild,
12:38comes out winging.
12:39That's what you call
12:40taking your shot,
12:41taking it early,
12:41I'll tell you what.
12:42And he might as well.
12:43He's got nothing to lose.
12:44The referee just got
12:46a nice right hand
12:47for the forehead.
12:48Best punch of the night.
12:49Yeah.
12:49Well, he took it well.
12:51He says,
12:51is that all you got,
12:52sucker?
12:52He just got hit.
12:54A wildly awkward
12:55David Dixon
12:56down to his knee
12:57after missing a punch.
12:59It's not a knockdown.
13:02Theoretically,
13:03the whole idea
13:03behind winning
13:04this title
13:05is that you're hoping
13:05it leads to a
13:06world title shot.
13:08David Dixon.
13:10Okay, hold it right there.
13:11Hold it.
13:11You can never
13:12accuse him of not trying.
13:13Stop paying attention
13:14like the man.
13:16Well,
13:17what's scary is
13:18that despite
13:18the track record
13:19of Tony Tucker
13:20of late,
13:20if he wins tonight,
13:22knowing the way
13:22this sport operates,
13:23Tucker could maneuver
13:24himself right back
13:26into the heavyweight hunt.
13:27Climb up the ladder.
13:28Okay, hold it.
13:29Hold it.
13:30Step back now.
13:31No catcher.
13:32You're in our
13:33mentality.
13:34I hope so.
13:34Yeah.
13:35He says he's hungrier.
13:36Blow, blow.
13:37Blow, blow.
13:38My cup.
13:40I'll tell you what.
13:41I always like
13:42to go the distance
13:42at this pace
13:43in his heat.
13:44So it's just going to be
13:45a matter of attrition
13:46right now.
13:46And certainly,
13:46Tony looks like
13:47he trained a little more.
13:49Yeah, but Dixon
13:49looks like he figured
13:50I've got a punch.
13:51I might as well
13:52come out and take it all.
13:53Look at that.
13:55Dixon,
13:55who found out
13:56about this fight
13:56just about three days ago
13:58while he was working
13:59out in his gym
14:00in South Central, L.A.
14:02He didn't even know
14:02it was a 12-rounder.
14:03There!
14:04Dixon goes down.
14:06And that is
14:07legitimate knockout.
14:08Four, five, six, six, six.
14:10He keeps running
14:11in a reckless abandon
14:12and he's blocking
14:13the shots.
14:13And he does key.
14:14He could block
14:15some things,
14:15try and counter,
14:16but he's not.
14:17He gets up on eight
14:18with a minute ten
14:18to go in the round.
14:20And Tony Tucker
14:21looking to finish him off.
14:23Dixon continues
14:24to win away,
14:25but Tucker comes right back
14:26to the body
14:27at the end of the head.
14:28A wild swing and a miss
14:29with the right hook
14:30by Dixon.
14:31Dixon out of gas.
14:31He's ready to go again.
14:35Second knockdown.
14:36This may be more
14:37a question
14:38of running out of gas
14:39than getting hit
14:39because he exerted himself
14:41so much
14:42at the very beginning.
14:44And it is hot, folks.
14:45It is hot.
14:46Over 120 degrees.
14:4840 seconds left.
14:49That's it.
14:50That's it.
14:50This fight's over.
14:51This fight was over.
14:53This fight was over
14:54after the first knockdown.
14:55You could see his eyes,
14:56his legs weren't under him.
14:57It was all a matter
14:57of going through the motions.
14:58Remind me to send him
14:59a case of beer,
15:00Tony Tucker,
15:01at the end of this.
15:02We're saving us
15:02from 12 rounds
15:03of the heat
15:04that we're suffering
15:05out here.
15:05Let's send him
15:06something good, Bobby.
15:07Works for me.
15:08I'm not exactly sure
15:10how defeating
15:10a relative unknown
15:11like David Dixon
15:12could bolt him
15:14to better.
15:15You know,
15:16this is the worst
15:18of boxing
15:18that you can see.
15:19Here this poor guy
15:20gets pulled into the ring
15:21with three or four days
15:22in 120 degree weather
15:24to face what was
15:25one of the top fighters
15:26in the country.
15:27The quality is so apparent.
15:29Such a mismatch.
15:30Such a horrendous
15:31thing to throw
15:32this poor guy.
15:33And then he has
15:34a lot of courage.
15:35Goes out,
15:35prizes best he can
15:36in this kind of weather.
15:37I don't think this poor guy
15:38can abandon another
15:39three or four rounds
15:40at most,
15:40even if they didn't have it.
15:41I've seen much better
15:42fighters not show
15:43the amount of heart he had.
15:44And he did at least
15:44go out there
15:45and take his shot.
15:46Which you have to tip
15:46his hat to him.
15:47He got in the ring,
15:48he took a shot,
15:48but certainly outclassed
15:50and outgunned in every aspect.
15:51Yes, bottom line,
15:52this is what can happen
15:53when you have these
15:54gross mismatches.
15:56Former IBM heavyweight champion
15:58Tony Tucker
15:59able to put
16:01David Dixon away here
16:03in the first round.
16:10Tony C.N.C. Tucker
16:11now hang a no vacancy sign
16:13above the NAB.
16:14Of this 37-year-old,
16:19the prevailing opinion
16:20was that if Tucker had lost,
16:22his 16-year career
16:23would be over.
16:24But instead,
16:25he bounces back
16:26from three straight defeats
16:27to win this particular title.
16:30Take a look at some of the
16:32action from the first
16:33and only round.
16:34Here's the knockdown again.
16:35You see that Dixon's
16:37just walking in wildly,
16:38walks right into a right hand,
16:39almost goes down there
16:40and walks into another one.
16:42Swing wildly.
16:43Tucker's just waiting
16:44on him now
16:44because he's kind of
16:45doing his own thing
16:46and, you know,
16:47he winds up on the floor.
16:48I'm not even sure
16:49the referee called
16:49that a knockdown.
16:52Watch again,
16:52you'll see the second knockdown.
16:53Tony Tucker hit him
16:54with a clean left hand
16:55on the inside
16:55and there's another one.
16:56Follow-up,
16:57double left hook,
16:58right on the chin.
16:59After that knockdown,
17:00you can see Dixon
17:01was seriously hurting
17:02if this was just
17:02a matter of time.
17:04And now here
17:05for the end of the fight,
17:06Tony's lining him up
17:07with that left hand
17:07and the right,
17:08loading up on the right hand
17:09and there's the second one.
17:10That's pretty much
17:11the end of the story.
17:13Tony Tucker's first win
17:15since December of 1994.
17:17The second time
17:18he's won the NABF belt.
17:21And we are set
17:22for the official time.
17:23We go to our ring announcer,
17:24Jimmy Lennon Jr.
17:25Ladies and gentlemen,
17:29we have the time
17:30of two minutes,
17:3124 seconds
17:33in round number one.
17:35Our referee in charge,
17:36Lou Filippo,
17:37stops the contest.
17:38The three knockdown rule

17:41He's the winner
17:41by way of knockout
17:43and the new NABF
17:44heavyweight champion,
17:46Tony TNT Tucker.
17:49So Tony Tucker raises his record
17:56to 53 and five
17:58with one no contest.
18:01But you have to wonder
18:03had he fought a tougher
18:04opponent like Jeremy Williams
18:05as originally planned,
18:07would he be able
18:09to celebrate?
18:10Coming up next,
18:11we go from the heaviest
18:12to the lightest,
18:14the WBC Strawweight Championship.
18:16And let's go backstage
18:17into the dressing room
18:18of the champion,
18:19Ricardo Lopez,
18:20making his 16th title defense
18:22as one of the hardest punchers
18:24in the lighter weight classifications.
18:26Lopez has knocked out
18:2731 of his 34 opponents,
18:29an astounding ratio
18:30for a 105-pounder.
18:31Tonight he'll take on
18:32unknown Kitty Chai Preacher
18:33of Thailand
18:34as he looks to continue
18:35his long reign
18:36as world champion.
18:37He's held the title
18:38for about six years.
18:39Little Ricardo Lopez,
18:41brilliant ring technician,
18:42who epitomizes
18:43the term of sweet science.
18:45With that,
18:46we're set now
18:46for post-fight reaction
18:48from our first bout,
18:49if you want to call it that.
18:50Let's go to the fight doctor,
18:51Ferdy Pacheco in the ring.
18:52Let's go to you.
18:53First thing,
18:54thank you for finishing
18:55that off fast.
18:55I don't think any of us
18:56could have taken
18:57120 degree for 12 rounds.
18:59Oh, it was tough.
19:00And he surprised me
19:01came out there real fast
19:02and he's real strong,
19:03you know.
19:04I know he was big,
19:05you know,
19:05he weighed a lot,
19:06but I didn't know
19:07he was as strong as he was.
19:08Did he hurt you
19:09with that first body shot
19:10and then a cross right,
19:11did it hurt you?
19:11No, all I was thinking
19:12about is to get
19:13this big motherfucker off.
19:16Greg,
19:17you're doing him
19:18better than that.
19:19Yeah, Greg Pace is with us.
19:20Greg,
19:21this is Greg Pace,
19:22a former champion
19:22of the world
19:22where you set it up.
19:24It took him
19:24and did a fantastic job.
19:26You know,
19:26what happened was
19:27the guy started rushing him.
19:29He surprised Tony.
19:30Okay, what happened to Tony,
19:31if Tony was not
19:32turning him under,
19:32he would have stopped him
19:33earlier
19:33because the guy
19:34was wide open.
19:35Tony did a fantastic job.
19:36He did all his homework.
19:37He jumped a lot of obstacles
19:38and a lot of things
19:39happened to him.
19:40He messed up his ankle
19:41real bad.
19:42He's overcome a lot.
19:42Well, you've overcome a lot
19:44and now you're back
19:44and what do you think
19:45is another comeback?
19:48Damn,
19:48where do you go from here?
19:50Well, you know,
19:51I got the NABL title
19:52and, you know,
19:53my eyes is on the Hayway crown
19:56so I'm going to take this win
19:59and I'm going to savor it
20:01and I'm going to get
20:02going right back
20:03into training.
20:03I'm going to help Oliver
20:04get ready for his fight
20:05on the 13th
20:06but I just thank one person
20:08in all.
20:08I thank God
20:09for giving me hair.
20:09I thank my training crew,
20:11all my sparring partners.
20:13I'd like to ask you
20:14one question
20:14quite apart from everything,
20:15including Greg
20:16who's had a lot of fights.
20:17Does it ever bother you
20:18to see a guy
20:18that's just had three days
20:20and has to come in
20:20and face a top fighter
20:22like you?
20:22I mean,
20:22don't you look at that guy
20:23and say,
20:23poor guy,
20:24he's got to face me.
20:26Well,
20:27yeah,
20:27actually,
20:28you got to look at it
20:29but the point is
20:30that I was here
20:30to fight Jeremy Williams,
20:31you know,
20:32and that's what happened
20:33in boxing times,
20:33you know,
20:34things happen
20:34but if you're a fighter,
20:35your job is just
20:36being in shape
20:37at all times,
20:38you know,
20:38so I can't,
20:39if he wasn't in shape
20:40or he wasn't ready,
20:41he didn't look like it
20:41because he came out there,
20:42you know,
20:42you know,
20:43with a ball to fight
20:43but his job is
20:44to stay in shape.
20:45That's the bottom line.
20:46Well,
20:46congratulations again.
20:47Congratulations,
20:48Greg.
20:48And back to Steve Albert
20:50and Bobby Chess
20:51at ringside.
20:52All right,
20:52thank you,
20:53Ferdy.
20:53Greg Page
20:53incidentally making a comeback.
20:55As mentioned earlier,
20:56two weeks from tonight,
20:57we return to the desert,
20:58this time across the border
20:59in Nevada
21:00when WBA heavyweight champ
21:02Bruce Shelton
21:02goes to war
21:03with WBC heavyweight champion
21:04Mike Tyson
21:05for the WBA heavyweight title
21:07and the first collision
21:09of two reigning
21:10heavyweight champions
21:10since 1987.
21:12This past March,
21:13Tyson recaptured
21:14the WBC crown
21:15with a third round TKO
21:16over Frank Bruno.
21:18Now his quest to unify.
21:20The title continues
21:20as he sets his sights
21:22on the WBA version
21:23of the title
21:23he originally won
21:24from Bonecrusher Smith
21:26in 1987.
21:28On Saturday,
21:29July 13th,
21:31newly crowned
21:31WBC champion
21:33Mike Tyson
21:33will enter the ring
21:34against the WBA
21:35title holder
21:36Bruce Shelton
21:37hoping to take
21:38the next step
21:38toward once again
21:39regaining
21:40the undisputed
21:41heavyweight championship
21:42of the world.
21:43I've been doing this
21:44since I've been 12 years old
21:45fighting competitively.
21:50I'm blessed
21:50with being able
21:51to fight well
21:52and I use it
21:52to my advantage.
21:55I never want
21:56to put myself
21:56in a position
21:57where I feel
21:57that I'm great.
21:59That's a vulnerable
22:00position to be in
22:01when you think
22:01you're invincible.
22:02So I just never want
22:03to be in that position
22:04where I believe
22:04that I'm invincible.
22:11I just want to win
22:12more than everyone else.
22:13standing in Tyson's way
22:15is perhaps the fastest
22:17opponent he's faced
22:18Bruce Seldon.
22:19And while he may
22:19respect Tyson's
22:20many accomplishments,
22:22the WBA champion
22:23believes it is now
22:24his time
22:24to rule the division
22:25and earn a place
22:26in boxing history.
22:28He's a tremendous fighter.
22:31He still has
22:32that aggressiveness
22:33and he still has
22:36that good power.
22:39Tyson's just another man.
22:42He's not invincible.
22:43He can be beat.
22:45My game plan, man,
22:46is to just get up there
22:47in that ring
22:48and do my best.
22:50I'm training
22:53and I'm training
22:54because I know
22:55this is the most
22:56important fight
22:56of my life.
22:58My heart
22:59is just as big
23:00as your heart.
23:01You know,
23:02I'm not afraid of you.
23:04I'm taller than you.
23:05I'm faster than you.
23:06And I have a
23:07longer reach than you.
23:09And I have a good
23:10left jab
23:11and I have great
23:11athleticism.
23:13So it's going to be
23:14a tremendous fight
23:14and I'm so anxious, man.
23:16I truly can't wait
23:18for this fight.
23:21And we'll soon find out
23:22if Bruce Sheldon's
23:24trademark jab
23:24which recently earned
23:25him the accolade
23:26of best boxer
23:27in the heavyweight division
23:28according to Ring Magazine
23:29has any kind of effect
23:30on Mike Tyson
23:31as we look forward
23:32to Sheldon vs. Tyson
23:33for the WBA
23:34Heavyweight Championship
23:35on Saturday,
23:36July 13th
23:37on pay-per-view.
