00:00:00Johnson has held the title for over three years, and although highly regarded in the boxing community,
00:00:05his accomplishments have gone virtually unnoticed by the general public.
00:00:09Despite this, Johnson remains upbeat and optimistic, feeling that the recognition is just a matter of time.
00:00:16I feel boxing has yet to see the best of Boom Boom Johnson.
00:00:21I've had different guys come out and bring out the better half,
00:00:25but I just feel that there's still a little bit more left in me.
00:00:30To do a lot of things, and it's just a matter of the guys that I face and the yearning for the sport.
00:00:36I'm still hungry, I'm still learning, and I'm still working hard to achieve my goals,
00:00:41which is to be the best that I can be, not in the ring, but in life as a whole.
00:00:46Well, despite 17 consecutive wins, including 10 title defenses, Tom Boom Boom Johnson still seeks publicity.
00:00:53That could come soon with a possible signature or defining fight against the likes of Prince Nassim Ahmed,
00:00:59or perhaps if he moves up in weight to battle Azuma Nelson.
00:01:02Tonight, here in Dublin, he faces Ramon Guzman in defense of his longtime IVF featherweight championship.
00:01:10Well, is Tom Johnson's career at his peak, or is it on the decline after years of hard-fought battles?
00:01:15Bobby, what's your assessment?
00:01:16Well, you know, Steve, he's had so many wars.
00:01:18He's had a championship now for over three years, 10 defenses.
00:01:20He's fought all the best there is in the division.
00:01:22So some might think because he's had so many wars, and sometimes the smaller weights,
00:01:26the bodies give out earlier in years than the big weights, they might think he's passed his prime.
00:01:30My perception is no.
00:01:32He can give the best of the best, all the war they want for as long as they want it, Steve.
00:01:36Well, as you know, we last saw a boom-boom in March against the then-number-one contender,
00:01:40Everett Baleño, a tough Colombian southpaw, after only his second career knockdown in the first round,
00:01:46Johnson got off the canvas to score an inspiring 12th-round TKO.
00:01:50Bobby, an example of just how determined Johnson is to keep his title.
00:01:54Well, Johnson's not a champion just in skills, but here you see him in the 12th round of the fight.
00:01:57He knows he's ahead, or he believes he's ahead.
00:01:59He goes for the knockout anyway.
00:02:00That's the championship heart that has to go with it, and championship pride.
00:02:04If you put the championship pride and heart together with championship skill,
00:02:07it's a great combination and an awfully difficult one to beat.
00:02:10Well, Ramon Guzman's lack of championship experience plus his recent move up to featherweight
00:02:17have to be big factors, and on top of that, Bernie, he's lost his last two fights.
00:02:21It's even bigger than that.
00:02:22He lost the last two fights by knockout.
00:02:24Will you please explain to me how this guy gets a title shot?
00:02:27I'd like somebody to explain it to me.
00:02:29All this guy faces today is boom-boom at his best.
00:02:33Boom-boom wants to look good, and he's got this abysmal record of being knocked out twice.
00:02:37It should be a short night.
00:02:38And a look at the challenger, Ramon Guzman, out of La Guerra, Venezuela,
00:02:43a former Venezuelan national champ.
00:02:45Guzman looking to turn a pro career around.
00:02:48That is on the brink of disaster.
00:02:49He's coming off two straight knockout defeats, as Purdy mentioned.
00:02:53He's just five and four his last nine fights, yet he's rated number 12 by the IVF.
00:02:58To make the odds even tougher, his first world title shot here against one of the most gutsy champions of the game today, Ramon Guzman, who told us yesterday that he has watched no tapes of Boom Boom Johnson, which to me is quite astonishing.
00:03:15I would think that you'd want to pick up, you know, as much information about your opponent as possible in preparation for a fight, especially if it's a title fight.
00:03:22Yeah, it's almost not understandable, except he's resigned to lose it.
00:03:26That's about it.
00:03:27Well, we're just about set to see the champion.
00:03:33The man, Ramon Guzman, will have to fight tonight.
00:03:37Tom Boom Boom Johnson.
00:03:40And here comes the champion.
00:03:43Boogo, born in Evansville, Indiana, now lives in Detroit, Michigan.
00:03:46His 11th defense of the IVF featherweight title.
00:03:49That's impressive, but he still has a ways to go for most consecutive successful defenses of the featherweight title.
00:03:55That distinction belongs to a man named Abe Attell out of San Francisco, who, according to Ring Magazine, made 20 successful defenses of the featherweight crown before losing it in 1912, although other sources have it listed at the 13th.
00:04:09Being led in by the championship belt.
00:04:13Boom Boom Johnson.
00:04:14When you talk about superb featherweight champs over the years, things like Willie Pepp, one of the greatest boxers of all time.
00:04:20Sandy Sadler come to mind, along with Alexis Arguello, Eusebio Pedrosa, Salvador Sanchez, and, of course, Azuma Nelson.
00:04:27Johnson has held the title since February of 93, when he outpointed Manuel Medina in the second of their three fights to avenge an earlier defeat.
00:04:35Let's check the numbers as we take a look at the tail of the tape.
00:04:38At 32, Johnson a year older than Guzman.
00:04:40The height nearly even.
00:04:41Johnson on the money at 126.
00:04:43Slight reach advantage for Johnson.
00:04:45And the IBF rules for this title fight.
00:04:47Scoring under the 10-point must system.
00:04:49Three scoring judges.
00:04:51There is no standing eight count.
00:04:52No three knockdown rule.
00:04:54Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:04:56The belt cannot save a fighter in any round.
00:04:59If an accidental foul occurs before the end of the sixth round, the fight has ruled a technical draw.
00:05:05If it happens after the completion of the sixth round, they go to the scorecard.
00:05:08So we're here at the Point Theater in Dublin, Ireland, where we are set for our co-feature, the IBF Featherweight Championship between Tom Boom Boom Johnson and Ramon Guzman.
00:05:22We asked Johnson what he knows about Guzman.
00:05:26He said, well, I know one thing.
00:05:28He's never fought on this level before.
00:05:30Boom Boom is right about that.
00:05:32Guzman rated number nine by the IBF as a junior featherweight, as mentioned, number 12 as a featherweight.
00:05:40Here he is fighting for a world championship.
00:05:42Let's get the formal introductions right now here in Dublin from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:05:50Well, fans, at this time, we present a world championship featured attraction here at the Point in Dublin.
00:06:04And once again, it is all brought to you by Frank Warren's Sports Network and Don King Productions, as sponsored by Adidas and MBC.
00:06:15This world title bound is sanctioned by the International Boxing Federation.
00:06:19The president, Robert Lee Sr., supervisor at ringside, Daryl Peoples, along with the Boxing Union of Ireland chairman is Nick Moore, president Mel Crystal.
00:06:31Introducing to you our judges scoring this bout from ringside, Dr. Ruben Garcia, Dave Paris, and Lawrence Wallace.
00:06:40Introducing to you our referee in charge of this bout.
00:06:42He'll be giving instructions after the introductions, Sam Williams.
00:06:47All right, fans, here we go with the IBF featherweight championship of the world scheduled for 12 rounds of boxing.
00:06:55Presenting first the challenger on my left, fighting out of the red corner, wearing blue trunks with red and yellow trim.
00:07:04He joins us all the way from La Huayra, Venezuela.
00:07:07He weighed in at eight stone, 13 and one quarter pounds, or 125 and one quarter U.S. pounds.
00:07:16His record stands at 21 victories, five defeats, with 20 wins coming by way of knockout.
00:07:24Please welcome the hard-hitting challenger, ranked the IBF number 12 featherweight contender in the world.
00:07:29Introducing Ramon Guzman.
00:07:37And presenting his opponent across the ring on my right, fighting out of the blue corner, the defending world champion, wearing black trunks with white and red trim.
00:07:48Fighting out of Detroit, Michigan, by way of Evansville, Indiana, in the United States.
00:07:54He weighed in at the featherweight limit of nine stone even, or 126 U.S. pounds.
00:08:01His record includes 43 wins, two losses, one draw with 26 wins coming by way of knockout.
00:08:09Tonight he is making the 11th defensiveest title.
00:08:13Please welcome the IBF featherweight champion of the world, Tom Boom Boom Johnson.
00:08:24And once again, it's Sam Williams, our puckery in charge, and now to give instructions.
00:08:32And I talk to you in the dressing room.
00:08:34I'm going to remind you, I want you to keep your...
00:08:36Watch your headbutts, your low blows, your kidney punches.
00:08:40On my command, the break, take a full shove back, protect yourself at all time.
00:08:44In case of a knockdown, I'll send you to the furthest neutral corner.
00:08:47Remain till I send for you.
00:08:49Good luck, man.
00:08:49Johnson, viewing this fight as a possible stepping stone to a lucrative showdown with WBO featherweight champ Prince Nassim Hamed to unify the titles.
00:09:03Meanwhile, Ramon Guzman, hoping to be the spoiler, but realistically, a long shot nonetheless.
00:09:10And here we go.
00:09:11Round one scheduled for 12 for the IBF featherweight championship.
00:09:14Tom Boom Boom Johnson in the black with the red and white trim.
00:09:16Ramon Guzman and Ramon Guzman wearing the multicolored trunks from Venezuela.
00:09:23Right off the bat, I've got to say, the referee Sam Williams from Detroit, Michigan.
00:09:27It's the same residence as Tom Boom Boom Johnson, which, to me, is just inviting trouble.
00:09:34Why don't they just have a referee from somewhere else to avoid things?
00:09:38At least it gives the appearance of impropriety, or as Don Kings used to say, the appearance of trickeration.
00:09:44It looks like it, but it isn't, but it looks like it.
00:09:46So why do that?
00:09:48I agree with you.
00:09:49Well, if all things go the way we think they may, Tom Boom Boom Johnson will take care of his own decision.
00:09:54It is not necessary.
00:09:55It may be all academic.
00:09:56You are correct, sir.
00:09:57Although a notoriously slow starter, Johnson says he really looks to win the first round.
00:10:02Of course, he doesn't like to give away any round.
00:10:04Every round to him is a war.
00:10:05But the first round is extremely significant to him.
00:10:09Maybe hurt his man earlier, put a little caution in him.
00:10:13But Guzman said he was going to wait the first round, which is what he's doing.
00:10:16Waiting, he's watching, he's going to look to see.
00:10:18But he's never seen Johnson, which I find to be preposterous to me.
00:10:21But, hey, he's not me in there.
00:10:24He's finding out what a left hook feels like by a champion.
00:10:28Because you get him good, solid hook past Boom Boom.
00:10:33Guzman has lost his last two by KO, five of his last nine.
00:10:36Yet here he is fighting for the title.
00:10:39He could be receiving some, well, false hope early, since Johnson, as we said, a slow starter.
00:10:45Well, according to his record, which is certainly hard to believe, I mean, he is a knockout artist.
00:10:50I mean, he certainly gets knocked out.
00:10:52But, I mean, he's a knockout artist by punch.
00:10:54I mean, he's got 20 knockouts.
00:10:56I don't know.
00:10:57Is that right?
00:10:57He describes himself as a puncher.
00:10:59Yes, 20 of his 21 wins are by knockout.
00:11:02He said he prefers, though, to fight from the distance, but looks to cut the distance and bang hard inside.
00:11:07His KO punch is the left hook.
00:11:09Yeah, no, I saw some evidence of that left hook down below.
00:11:12And when he did an under and over, he seems to have a decent left hook.
00:11:15And I noticed he came out here very excited, very emotional for a challenge that's very good.
00:11:20And, Bobby, I mean, you know, when you know you're better, but still, the guy bangs,
00:11:23don't you have to give him a little bit of respect when you start out like this?
00:11:26You know, I try and give everybody respect.
00:11:28And you saw a nice right hand, boom, boom, Johnson rocked down a jab and countered beautifully to no avail.
00:11:34I saw no results on Guzman's face.
00:11:36Well, Guzman looks determined right now.
00:11:38I'll have to say that for him.
00:11:39He's come out here to fight.
00:11:40Johnson, not a knockout artist.
00:11:45He does not like to engage in roles.
00:11:47He has 25 knockouts in his 43 wins.
00:11:49Although, as we've seen, he can handle himself in a street fight, but it's just not in his game plan, in his fight plan.
00:11:55He is tough, determined, has a champion's heart, but doesn't look to stand in his slug.
00:12:00He likes to work off the jab with his objective to hit and not be hit.
00:12:05And maybe that's why he's lasted this long.
00:12:07He is a good defensive fighter, and he keeps the fighter right in front of him, and he's doing the leading.
00:12:12No problem, first round.
00:12:14The end of round one here at the Point Theater in Dublin, Ireland.
00:12:21Well, we come to you tonight from the crown jewel of the Emerald Isle in Dublin in the last year.
00:12:26The well-traveled Showtime Championship boxing crew has frequently been across the Atlantic to bring you some of the best boxing in the world.
00:12:33Besides Dublin, we visited merry old England's London and Newcastle, as well as the car-making capital of Germany, Stuttgart.
00:12:39Two of our trips featured world heavyweight championships, McCall vs. Bruno at London's Wembley Stadium for the WBC title,
00:12:47and Botha vs. Schultz in Deutschland for the IVF crown.
00:12:50Next week, we're off again to the magical city of Las Vegas for Selden vs. Tyson, our fourth heavyweight championship in 12 months.
00:12:58Yes, Showtime on the road again.
00:13:01Good work. You're working good. Working beautiful.
00:13:02Good work. 10 seconds.
00:13:05Final with the jab.
00:13:06After you start fighting with the jab, you touch him with the jab, then everything has to go behind that.
00:13:12Then you break something off for him, okay?
00:13:15Round two.
00:13:17Now, these fellas weigh about half as much as the cruiserweights we just saw, expect at least twice as much action.
00:13:25We certainly hope so.
00:13:26Well, if you like to see good boxing, just keep your eyes on Boom Boom Minion.
00:13:33He does box very well, very beautifully, sets things up, classical boxing, believes in the jab, let things come off the jab, and cautious.
00:13:41He has a great defense.
00:13:44He's going to go when he wants to go.
00:13:45He's smart.
00:13:46He likes to make his opponents pay, and they miss and pay when they make mistakes, but he doesn't want to have to do that at the risk of getting himself in harm's way.
00:13:54He likes to get into a rhythm, step in and get out, and wears the opponent down with a feeling of attack, digging body shots that can weaken his opponents and really take the top out of their punches.
00:14:05And when he's on, he executes faster than his opponents, beats him to the punch, and often gets stronger as the fight wears on.
00:14:13But it usually takes a couple of rounds before he really gets down to business.
00:14:18He's trying to do some marathon, not as sprint, but he's round to do as a war.
00:14:23You know, Bobby, this man has landed a straight right hand two or three times.
00:14:26He didn't put all the power behind it that he could have.
00:14:29I'm wondering what's going to happen in that right hand land with the blasting power that he's got supposed to have.
00:14:35Well, I'll tell you, it depends on what that power is and who it was against.
00:14:39Tom Johnson will probably fire right back, and we'll make a little bit of a war out of it.
00:14:43This is Guzman's first world title shot, eight-year career.
00:14:47He turned pro in 87, won his first 10 fights before suffering his first defeat.
00:14:52Bounced back with six straight KOs over the next two years, but since those six straight KOs wins, five and four,
00:14:59with his last two fights knocked out defeat.
00:15:01He comes off a 10th round TKO loss, and prior to that, a second round KO loss.
00:15:08See the right hand bottom?
00:15:09Yeah, I see him rocking on the right hand. He's doing it very well, too.
00:15:12He's trying to set Boom Boom up as Boom Boom's coming to him, working off a counter on the jab.
00:15:17And I'll tell you, if he lands a clean one, anything's possible.
00:15:20But I think Boom Boom right now kind of got him zeroed in, working his body a little bit.
00:15:26He was just not active enough.
00:15:28Yeah, I don't see this a complete one-way fight here.
00:15:31I mean, this guy has got potential.
00:15:35I mean, he shouldn't beat a Boom Boom, doesn't he?
00:15:36He's got that right hand. He's saving it and landing it when he counts.
00:15:40Johnson certainly has the lasting power.
00:15:47He's been the only IVF featherweight champ for the last three-plus years.
00:15:50Well, there have been seven WBC featherweight champs, four WBA and four WBO champions.
00:15:57122nd to balance it.
00:15:58Only two losses in 46 fights to Harold Warren and Manuel Medina, who fights later against the Prince, Nassim Ahmed.
00:16:11Starting to hear some boos from the crowd.
00:16:13Let's get Boom Boom started. He doesn't like to hear boos.
00:16:16Another one in the pit for Johnson.
00:16:22And the Bluebirds do come up.
00:16:23They're satisfied with what he's doing, but he's got to keep his hands high and throw the right hand.
00:16:46Put your right hand in when he comes in, when he comes and throws.
00:16:48Well, here you see Boom Boom coming in, and Guzman's trying to work.
00:16:59He's trying to work the jab, but he gets with the left hook.
00:17:02Again, a left hook.
00:17:03His left hand drops a little bit, but he's just jabbing right now.
00:17:05He's not doing anything.
00:17:07Except once in a while, trying to counter the right hand.
00:17:09Not active enough.
00:17:13Well, I think Boom Boom has been sent out to increase the action a little bit now.
00:17:17But if he doesn't have to intensify the action, it's time to start taking command.
00:17:20I mean, he's won both rounds, but hasn't been anything big and decisive here.
00:17:25Covito Diaz, the chief second in the corner of Guzman.
00:17:29Well, here we are, round three.
00:17:31Not too much solid action thus far.
00:17:34We would expect Johnson to pick it up and get into his rhythm soon.
00:17:41A jab by Guzman, sort of a folding jab.
00:17:44A jab by Bumbo, who likes to fight from a distance, body shots by Bumbo Johnson.
00:17:52This is Wiley with the left.
00:17:54Bumbo came out, certainly with that right hand in the body.
00:17:57First punch he threw, second, fourth, came down the road.
00:18:03Bumbo, 21 and five with 20 knockouts.
00:18:06Johnson, 43, 2 and 1 with 26 KOs.
00:18:09His 11th title in the fence, and good setup for the right with the right fist by Tom Johnson.
00:18:18Johnson, very patient, looking to set up the right hand or a combination with the left jab.
00:18:31And there it is.
00:18:34He's still keeping too much distance between them.
00:18:36He still hasn't committed to coming in and doing the fighting.
00:18:39He's standing out there where he can move, but things don't happen for him.
00:18:43But he's still not committed completely.
00:18:45There you go.
00:18:46Johnson beginning to land with more regularity to...
00:18:48The overhand right down.
00:18:50He's got a slip or did he go down?
00:18:52He went down from a punch in the temple, but it was a little bit of a fast balance kind of fall.
00:18:57I think a part of that punch was slipped as it was power.
00:19:01But I'll tell you what, he's starting to zero in with it.
00:19:03It's the kind of slip you do on a slippery surface.
00:19:06You know, I mean, he fell with too much force for it to be just a blow.
00:19:09Yeah, it was a blow, but that was a slip point.
00:19:11And now Johnson again picking up the pace, pouring in, going to the ribs, to the body.
00:19:17Tom Johnson, firing a true and efficient champion, too.
00:19:21He hurts the man's head and he goes to the body.
00:19:23He doesn't forget the body.
00:19:25Oh, amazing by Johnson and Guzman down!
00:19:29The second knockdown this round.
00:19:31Stevie standing deep, digging to the body, turned back and rocked upstairs with a right hand.
00:19:35Beautiful punch, terrific combination.
00:19:38A barrage by the champion, Tom Boom Boom Johnson.
00:19:4135 seconds to go in round three.
00:19:44He's going down twice.
00:19:45There's no three knockdown rule here.
00:19:46Awful long time when you're getting this kind of punishment.
00:19:50Right back comes Johnson looking to end it here in round number three.
00:19:54Big low blow.
00:19:55Could have stopped it for a moment right there.
00:19:58Hit him up, hit him up.
00:19:59You know, to his credit, when Guzman got up, he was mad at himself,
00:20:03which meant that he still had a pretty clear head.
00:20:05Another long slot here by Tom Boom Johnson.
00:20:08Guzman looking to hang in.
00:20:09Again, no three knockdown rule.
00:20:11According to the International Boxing Federation,
00:20:14Guzman has been down twice here in the third.
00:20:18Not much advice from anybody.
00:20:28They're just saying keep your hands up and stop fighting with them.
00:20:32Let's take a look at the first knockdown, then Bobby will take a look at the second.
00:20:48But watch the action to the body.
00:20:52Keep your eyes on Boom Boom's club when he comes working to the body.
00:20:55See?
00:20:56He has in his mind that he's going to drop those hands by working.
00:21:02Oh, that was a slip one.
00:21:04You've got the one with the body.
00:21:07Watch the second knockdown.
00:21:08Boom Boom was digging up underneath.
00:21:09Digging up underneath.
00:21:10He's going to take a look at the body, tearing left hooks and right uppercuts.
00:21:12And he comes and he leaps back.
00:21:14He leaps in with a right hand.
00:21:15You'll see him coil here.
00:21:16And he hits right up top.
00:21:18It's coming soon.
00:21:20Staying to the body.
00:21:21Here's the right hand.
00:21:22He coils and he leaps right up with it.
00:21:24Right on the button.
00:21:25Beautiful punch.
00:21:25Beautiful knockdown.
00:21:26A wicked straight right hand that levels Ramon Guzman,
00:21:30the second knockdown in round number three.
00:21:32Round four.
00:21:34It is scheduled for 12 for the IBF featherweight championship.
00:21:38Tom Johnson having his way with the challenger Ramon Guzman.
00:21:42Beautiful combination, but it's raised with the ring.
00:21:46He didn't have full contact.
00:21:47Guzman, you've got to give him credit for guts.
00:21:49He came back and said, yeah, he knocked me down, but I feel all right.
00:21:52I feel good.
00:21:53I mean, he's not whimpering.
00:21:54He's ready to go fight some more.
00:21:56Got to give him credit for guts.
00:21:58Guzman, an unknown quantity.
00:22:00His first world title shot after losing two in a row by knockout.
00:22:05Five and four over his last nine points.
00:22:09We're looking to hang tough here against the classy champion, Tom Johnson.
00:22:12Guzman's not landing any clean heart punches.
00:22:15It's going to keep Johnson at bay, keep him back,
00:22:17and let Johnson show many respects.
00:22:19So here comes Johnson.
00:22:21Left kick.
00:22:22Going to the body is Tom Johnson.
00:22:24Pulling away, just up above him.
00:22:26Oh, what a digging left hook.
00:22:28Now a right by Johnson.
00:22:29He's a ferocious drags to the body, to the head,
00:22:33with the right doubling up.
00:22:35Oh, over Guzman.
00:22:36The referee, Sam Williams, looking on very closely.
00:22:39Another right hook to the head by Johnson.
00:22:41The punches are too hard.
00:22:42Too hard, too many, too accurate.
00:22:45Guzman is not going to be able to stay in that posture.
00:22:48He's still fighting, though.
00:22:49You can't stop.
00:22:50Is he still fighting?
00:22:51He's got his feet under him.
00:22:53He's still fighting.
00:22:53He never looked rocky in that.
00:22:55He took his shell locking, but he's still sticking.
00:22:56A good decision by Sam Williams,
00:22:59a referee from Detroit.
00:23:05That was a lot of body punishment
00:23:06but very little hip punishment.
00:23:08He's taking a lot of the starch out of Guzman, too.
00:23:10Those fighting shots.
00:23:15That is the history of Tom Volcombe Johnson.
00:23:17The accumulative effect usually wears down his opponent,
00:23:20and then he goes in for the finish.
00:23:22He looks like he's loading up his right hand, Bobby.
00:23:25Looks like he just wants to land that
00:23:27as soon as he turns him around enough.
00:23:29There he goes.
00:23:31There he goes.
00:23:34He was just turning him around
00:23:35so that that right hand would land, and it did.
00:23:37He goes up.
00:23:39Homewolf Johnson.
00:23:41Classic style.
00:23:42Lots of blows to the body.
00:23:44Then he goes upstairs.
00:23:46And he buckles Guzman's knees just a moment to go.
00:23:5030 seconds and counting in round four.
00:23:53Another big round for the champion Johnson.
00:23:56He's swinging.
00:23:57He's swinging too from too far out is Guzman.
00:24:00He's swinging wide,
00:24:02and Johnson's coming in tight inside those swinging circles.
00:24:05Bernie is just telegraphing those punches, allowing Johnson to get out of the woods.
00:24:09That's the same thing that Ali did to form it in the jungle.
00:24:12Why punches and Ali stepped inside and demolished it.
00:24:16That's what this is turning out to be.
00:24:18Johnson again, setting up the right with the left hand as the bell's side.
00:24:30Working good. Working good, David. Working good.
00:24:35Working good. Don't get excited, okay? Don't get excited.
00:24:44Don't get into a position where you find yourself with your hand down and your chin up.
00:24:53Stay into your little groove, okay? Don't get into hairy. It'll come.
00:24:59Okay, don't get into hairy. It'll come.
00:25:01Keep touching it with the jab.
00:25:02And working from there, okay? Keep touching it with the jab.
00:25:08All right, let's take a look at what's happening here because the way that...
00:25:12Now, here's that sequence of body chopping attacks.
00:25:15Boy, this is the way to do it.
00:25:17But watch how he watches his defense.
00:25:19See, Boom Boom punches.
00:25:20When he's looking for that other glass glass, he's going under and still punching with impunity.
00:25:24Boy, that's a beautiful box.
00:25:26Good stuff from Boom Boom Johnson.
00:25:29Bonzel Johnson, his trainer, exhorting his man to show patience.
00:25:34It'll come.
00:25:35We'll see if it does.
00:25:37It's round number five.
00:25:38Scheduled for 12.
00:25:39The IBS featherweight championship.
00:25:41Boy, he's in such command, Steve.
00:25:42You don't want to go out there and make a silly mistake.
00:25:44He's winning the rounds.
00:25:45He's getting the job done.
00:25:46He's had his man hurt on the floor.
00:25:47No need to hurry and make a mistake.
00:25:49He's had him down a lot.
00:25:51Twice, to be exact.
00:25:53And round three.
00:25:55And it was...
00:25:56He's ahead.
00:25:5740 to 35.
00:25:58How can he be not?
00:25:59One every round.
00:26:01And the champion, Boom Boom Johnson.
00:26:03Although no date has been said.
00:26:06It's felt that a Johnson-Prince-Nasim Ahmed showdown is inevitable.
00:26:10They're talking about the possibility of December.
00:26:15I tell you, they better not talk about anything until this night.
00:26:17I tell you, it's over there.
00:26:17I tell you, it's over there.
00:26:18That's true.
00:26:19You never know.
00:26:20As Ahmed later is going up against a former two-time world champion and experienced season
00:26:24fighter in Manuel Medina.
00:26:26As running ball found out when he stepped in for an easy fight and had a tough night in
00:26:31the garden.
00:26:32You know, it's funny, too.
00:26:33Tom Johnson said that if the same Medina shows up to fight Nasim that fought him, he predicts
00:26:38a 90-plus percent chance of upset.
00:26:40He feels Ahmed isn't taking Medina seriously when he predicts a second-round knockout.
00:26:46And even Johnson said to us, he wouldn't want to fight Medina again.
00:26:50He scored him three times, winning two out of three, losing the first, and then winning
00:26:54the next two.
00:26:55Oh, he's stepping up here.
00:26:57He's stepping up the quantity and quality of the question.
00:27:01Minute 20 romantic in round number five, it has been, oh, John Boom Boom Johnson.
00:27:07Perryboat.
00:27:18Oh, John Boom.
00:27:2026 even.
00:27:28Look how light is it, but
00:27:33126 even
00:27:37That right time was so much more effective in the earlier rounds while he was coming forward. I'm wondering why is relaxing staying on the outside?
00:27:47Maybe just join the crowd. It's another year to him that's reversed
00:27:51Perhaps Johnson just pacing himself after all he is 32 years of age
00:27:59He feels that he will not be fighting much longer at 126. He wants to move up to 130. Are you saying that he can't fight past five or six rounds?
00:28:08I heard that look you were giving
00:28:14Your young friend announcer
00:28:17Final seconds round five

00:29:14Let's go to work on this guy again, okay? Get him ready to go.
00:29:16Take him.
00:29:17All right?
00:29:18Come on, champs.
00:29:19Go get careless. Keep your chin down.
00:29:20Keep your chin down.
00:29:21Keep your chin down.
00:29:22Keep your chin down.
00:29:23Go to work, baby.
00:29:24Let's go!
00:29:25Let's go!
00:29:26The words of Bachel Johnson to the corner of Boom Boom Johnson as we enter into round number six.
00:29:32As confident as Prince Nassim Hamed is, you wonder if he's in his dressing room watching Boom Boom Johnson's total domination of Ramon Guzman.
00:29:40He just doesn't throw enough punches. He doesn't throw him hard enough to make a difference, to make some damage.
00:29:50He's done to him.
00:29:51John can do what he wants, rest what he wants, fight what he wants. It's far too easy for him.
00:29:57Our telecast here on Showtime in conjunction with B Sky B TV. They've been very helpful to us. We appreciate their efforts.
00:30:05Who's mind going a little bit south of the border there, but getting away with it?
00:30:10Well, this corner sent him out to do what he has to do. Boom Boom.
00:30:16Corner said okay, that was an easy round. Now let's go out of the finish. Let's go home. Come on.
00:30:21They're instructing him, let's get to Schumbricks.
00:30:26That's it showing his quickness defensively able to bob and wave out of the way of those punches by
00:30:41Goosebumps you watch when he comes out of that coil you load that right hand yes look at him out of the
00:30:50crouch tom johnson toying with the left to set up the right or accommodation
00:30:58johnson again looks to be in exquisite condition dancing around here in round six
00:31:05it doesn't even look as if he's broken a sweat
00:31:12seems to be getting a little more brave going forward a little more maybe building a little
00:31:16confidence that maybe johnson's a little tired but i don't think so i don't know what he could be
00:31:22building confidence in except that he's still standing straight up because he had done
00:31:30a lot of punches in the air
00:31:35combination just missed with the right
00:31:36good spot his game but he's just not in the same league as tom boom
00:31:49shots
00:31:56under 30 seconds round six
00:32:03Come on, take it over.
00:32:05Let's finish.
00:32:06And he's that.
00:32:07They're starting to boom a little bit, and they want,
00:32:09you know, hey, they're waiting for Prince to put on the show,
00:32:12and we've got a waltz going here.
00:32:14Come on, let's go.
00:32:15Well, this started out in kind of sensational fashion,
00:32:17first D.P. around, good punches, good combinations,
00:32:20couple of knockdowns, and now it's kind of settled
00:32:23into a nice waltz.
00:32:24And the rhythmic applause takes us to the bell.
00:32:27And now the booing.
00:32:29All right, baby.
00:32:35Knockout coming, coming.
00:32:36Huh?
00:32:37Knockout coming, coming.
00:32:38That's right.
00:32:39That's right.
00:32:40You're boxing intelligence.
00:32:42You're boxing good.
00:32:44You're boxing good, okay?
00:32:46But look, don't let this guy get brave on us now, you know?
00:32:49Right.
00:32:50Don't let him start getting brave on us.
00:32:51Now, you keep the tempo, you keep the thick tempo.
00:32:53Oye, mi bien.
00:32:55Si el hombre te corre por la orilla la cuerda, no lo cargo.
00:32:58Espera llegue a rincon.
00:33:00Y ahà lo finca con la cintura y los rincones y te juega la vida.
00:33:03Let him dance around, but when he gets to the corner,
00:33:05cut him off and let him have it.
00:33:06And, of course, that's easy to set him out.
00:33:08You can't corner a guy like Bumbu.
00:33:10Y el hombre te corre en los jacitos que tú le tiras,
00:33:12porque está esperando que tú hagas la mano para que te la derecha.
00:33:16He's telling him to jab three or four times.
00:33:17That's just one.
00:33:18The guy's waiting to hit you with the right hand.
00:33:19Keep throwing the jab two, three times.
00:33:20And he told him to cut him off when he starts dancing around.
00:33:21Don't let him dance so much.
00:33:22Round seven, Guzman was down twice in the third round.
00:33:25Here we are halfway through the fight.
00:33:27Guzman needs to explode in a big way here.
00:33:30If he has any ideas of upsetting Bumbum Johnson.
00:33:33Bumbum still in the tremendous control of the fight.
00:33:37Of course, this corner saying that he has been boxing well,
00:33:40but they have got to be growing impatient right here.
00:33:43Well, as in the case of the Nate Miller fight,
00:33:45Bumbum's had his man on the corner.
00:33:46He's dancing around.
00:33:47Don't let him dance so much.
00:33:48Don't let him dance so much.
00:33:49Round seven, Guzman was down twice in the third round.
00:33:52Here we are halfway through the fight.
00:33:54He needs to explode in a big way here.
00:33:57If he has any ideas of upsetting Bumbum Johnson.
00:33:59Bumbum's had his man on the canvas.
00:34:01Six rounds in the bank.
00:34:02He's canceled the point.
00:34:03And no return.
00:34:04There he goes for the third time of the fight.
00:34:06Here early in round seven, Guzman goes down.
00:34:09And that was a picture-perfect right hand.
00:34:11Guzman is weary.
00:34:12No question about it.
00:34:13And that shot was enough to keep him down.
00:34:15He's got guts, this guy.
00:34:16He's got guts.
00:34:17Give him credit.
00:34:18And the problem is he's got 2.08 remaining in round seven
00:34:21after the knockdown.
00:34:23And Johnson's not in a hurry.
00:34:25He's just relaxing, waiting for another opportunity to open up,
00:34:28and he'll get it done again, I'm sure.
00:34:30Three knockdowns in the fight for Tom Bumbum Johnson.
00:34:35He's still giving him enough time to clear his head, I'll tell him that.
00:34:43He's given him a whale of a lot of time to clear his head.
00:34:46Now, letting him off the hook here for the moment after Guzman was obviously momentarily dazed.
00:34:53He's got two minutes to work on him.
00:34:55I mean, he's just for nothing.
00:34:56There's no reason to let him off the hook here.
00:35:01You know, sometimes a fighter knocks another fighter down.
00:35:03He doesn't sense that it was a clean knockdown or a debilitating one.
00:35:06He'll let it go and just go back to working with what got in there in the first place.
00:35:11Officially Guzman down with 2.24 left in round seven.
00:35:15Now, a minute ten remaining in the round.
00:35:18Johnson doubling up, tripling up, all left hands now.
00:35:22Let's see if that leases the right.
00:35:25Bit of a low blow there by Guzman.
00:35:31There's the right hand by Johnson, but it grazed him.
00:35:34Come into.
00:35:36Come into.
00:35:37Come into.
00:35:38Come into.
00:35:39Come into.
00:35:40Come into.
00:35:41You guys are showing great patience.
00:35:42Good possibly to be working a little more, but he's showing excellent defense as well.
00:35:46He's making a lot of punches.
00:35:47Either grazed off his shoulders, off his gloves, or missed to freely.
00:35:50Any while, as we have mentioned, a gutty effort by the Venezuelan, Ramon Goscott.
00:35:55Oh, there's a straight right hand by Tom Johnson, and he digs into the body again.
00:36:02the right hook to the head that comes again you watch it it's coming again you see him
00:36:07you see him starting to cock it he's loading up turning his body in with it and he steps
00:36:11back and fires it seems inevitable as we approach 10 seconds to go in round seven
00:36:20right hands each time but all after being set up by a barrage of punches
00:36:26well he survived that corridor we know how and he's going back to the corner let's listen to the
00:36:33instructions should be a babble of voices
00:36:40well you can see that he was weary he shrugged twice let's take a look at that resounding tail
00:37:04i knocked down it starts with always starts with the work through the body and then the straight
00:37:10right hand and boy that was a beautiful crossing right hand whacked right on the body no you watch
00:37:14it tom keeps setting it up too he used the left hand and then the right the left hand and then the
00:37:19right he's been doing it all day left hook straight right right down the pipe and there you see the
00:37:23results you know it's amazing he got up it was a good shot round number eight guzman receives a final slap
00:37:34on the face to get him out there i have hardly ever seen that much of a resignation on a beaten
00:37:41beaten fighter's face when he's shrugged twice like saying what do you want me to do i can't do anything
00:37:45with this guy i mean they're they're saying and he's double jabbing this and he's going yeah right
00:37:50and birdie i know it's unorthodox but you can almost argue for round seven to be scored ten seven
00:37:55due to johnson's domination including the knockdown the third knockdown of the fight for boom boom
00:38:02you know guzman could be frustrated maybe he can't solve tom maybe he can't hit him maybe just too
00:38:06strong for him could be any one of a number of things but all those things playing a part in that
00:38:11he is losing big well he hasn't won around that's for sure and he's been down in two of them
00:38:16you can imagine the score is gigantic the only the only thing that guzman has displayed here is
00:38:24heart but he is certainly not in the class of tom johnson bobby here's a hard question for you
00:38:31bobby would you consider this a mismatch we know all fighters champions and top contenders alike
00:38:38after every once in a while get easy fights they force the best opponents from them every time out
00:38:43they shorten their careers and do damage to their bodies tom johnson's paid his dues he's doing a
00:38:48soft fight well the last time we saw johnson he had his hands full against every valenio
00:38:53going into the 12th before he finally got to stop it it took nassim hamed less than two rounds to
00:38:58dispatch daniel lsa tonight johnson versus guzman a very one-sided affair for the champion while
00:39:04mohammed could be tested later against medina we'll see
00:39:11combination to the head by johnson
00:39:18he's making the work with counters he's leading with the left but he is following big right hands
00:39:23this one in danger of losing his third consecutive fight by ko
00:39:30this one he lost without
00:39:33right we didn't get far enough and the fight is not over
00:39:38not over hands are free yeah hands are free let's box out
00:39:46third man of the ring sam williams
00:39:54johnson always takes his time steps away from what he's doing
00:39:57takes a look at it reassess the situation go back in
00:40:00when and where he wants to that's the style he has well he is a thinking man's fighter he
00:40:05takes a cerebral approach to the game we had a long sit down conversation with him yesterday
00:40:12in preparation for this fight and that's the way he is and that's the way he fights
00:40:17a lot of people after saying that feel that he should have already taken to his spot
00:40:25and the crowd has six more views
00:40:39they're chastising him for not throwing any blows and then he said they're saying you can't win
00:40:55unless you throw punches they're almost saying to him look if you don't start throwing something
00:41:00we're going to stop this fight they're very dejected in the corner there's no pep there there's no
00:41:05hope of winning there's just the hope of surviving
00:41:07that's what's going on
00:41:12take your time with this guy right here right here let it go after you've touched it twice
00:41:16oh you're hurt okay all right
00:41:18don't worry about it don't worry about it
00:41:20you know i'm not just saying this because you said that i was wondering why he was holding
00:41:35back with the right hand earlier to myself so that is it but johnson nevertheless could have
00:41:42as much as a 10-point lead as he posts here as we enter round number nine watch exactly how i have it
00:41:48that's the 80 to 70. clearly one side knockdowns in a couple rounds
00:41:54guzman's just not in the fight
00:41:58seven of the 10 title defenses by johnson have gone the distance as mentioned right at the outset
00:42:04he looks at each fight as a marathon not as a sprint and this is a prime administration right
00:42:10here against a uh overmatched ramon guzman i was talking about moving up to 130 pounds but only if the
00:42:16the title presents itself and is available because he doesn't want to vacate just that
00:42:21competed to heavier weight he wants another title a solid barrage of left hooks here
00:42:27all left hands for the most part couple of rights there he's holding back his right hand is damaged
00:42:32tom johnson continues to unload throwing some bombs
00:42:35and i'll tell you this month taking the punch better now than he had in the early round because
00:42:42he's not getting hit with his harder punches i mean he's lost his team as booboo
00:42:49well he's taking an awful lot of direct shots with no effect as good but even a one-handed puncher here
00:42:55he's been down three times in the fight
00:43:18right now he's throwing combination after combination and this is round number nine
00:43:32referee took a long lingering look at guzman well that's the thing guzman not coming back
00:43:38back offensively it's been all tom johnson stop that step back
00:43:50keep him up low blow there by tom johnson did you have a call to keep the punches up
00:43:56guzman actually landed some of his more effective punches just now a couple of uppercuts and hooks
00:44:01on the inside but really he doesn't seem to have the power to get johnson's attention that much
00:44:07well can you want to survive another round it's just no no strength whatsoever in his punch
00:44:15left hooks by tom johnson final seconds of round nine to the head to the chin goes tom johnson now
00:44:22unloading the combination despite the bad right hand he's down with the right to the head and we head for
00:44:28the bell
00:44:37we're rating him again for not throwing punches although he was and they're saying they're going to
00:45:02stop the fight if he doesn't do better but uh let's take a look at the cut it doesn't look bad
00:45:09i mean they're working on it with a towel as you see we don't see it clearly but they don't seem to be
00:45:13excited about it referee referee looking at it closely looking at it closely all he needs is an excuse
00:45:21all he needs an excuse to stop it it's a one-way shot out
00:45:23and i'll tell you though i thought the last round was the best round who's men had fought in the entire
00:45:29fight took the best solid shots and did not follow fought back and fired back and continued to punch
00:45:36bobby he's not laying there taking the shots here we go into double figures round 10 who thought it would go
00:45:43this far against the guy who came in loser of his last two by knockout five and four over his previous
00:45:49nine his first title shot well at the end of round nine goosebumps perhaps through his best punch of the
00:45:54fight a left hook in desperation in a flurry that momentarily stopped boom boom well if this continues
00:46:01i'll tell you the odds makers are going to have a banquet with a french fight if french looks good
00:46:07prince may have a bad night also right now boom boom is not having what i would call a great night
00:46:13well he's not having a bad night he just didn't blow out the opponent in spectacular fashion which many
00:46:19thought he might based on his lack of big time credentials but boom boom's pitching a shutout doing
00:46:24whatever he wants to do taking his time and enjoying himself that's true about me but that doesn't build up
00:46:30box office gates if you want this guy came out exploded and then prince has to come face him it's a
00:46:36different book box office a different aspect to the fight and bobo of a guy who is displeased over
00:46:41the fact that he despite being a long-time champion having his problems gaining recognition
00:46:48like you say this might not help the call i mean it's hard to say that you put the shutout and didn't help
00:46:54but you have to measure the opposition this guy should one of those nights where you don't get
00:47:06out a guy that you should and he's still there that's the halfway point of round 10.
00:47:12you know tom does such a nice subtle thing on the inside slipping punches like that let's do
00:47:24more missed three four punches spit out let's box and no will affect him right there's nothing in
00:47:29him the crowd applauding getting behind the uh hunter dog the challenger ramon goes mod as you can hear
00:47:36here in the background his face is beginning to lump up and show the effect of all the punishment he's
00:47:41taking his cut not bad not bad but he is very lumped up right hand by uh johnson you can see him
00:47:49winch when he threw that right he has the damage to the right hand it happened a couple of rounds back
00:47:52but johnson's still so beautiful to watch look at him defensively get out of the way of those
00:48:19those punches albeit in some cases telegraph i put that whole combination pretty much just one hand
00:48:26a good slipping and bobbing weaving just pretty to watch all he's doing is fighting with his left hand
00:48:35you can see but i mean nobody throws that many left hands and not a right hand after
00:48:39you know what's happening but we have to keep a minus okay every now and then you got to break
00:48:56something off for this guy get a little too brave they think they think you're safe ain't nothing
00:48:59happening we've got to break something off on this sucker okay catch him coming and break something off
00:49:04for him a two three punch combination i know what's happening a lot of times dig this over here
00:49:10dig it over here all right
00:49:20guy just said that we got six more minutes to win this fight now that's what you call unbridled optimism
00:49:26you guys have this as a shutout i sure do and i'm sure bobby does
00:49:43have this one hundred to eighty eight as of right now the gap just to get bigger sure johnson thought
00:49:50round 10 somewhat differently keeping more at a distance possibly because guzman caught him with
00:49:56a solid shot at the end of the round partly because he can stay at a distance and keep his title without
00:50:02getting more at a problem but he is fighting one-handed right hand is hurt
00:50:18joining us a very game but certainly overmatched ramon guzman on the multi-colored trunk on the left of
00:50:25your screen looks to be shut out here by tom boom johnson but johnson fighting on one hand his right
00:50:34hand hurt not using it using it sparingly when he goes for the knockout he uses it otherwise he's just
00:50:40using a left-handed fight and so if you just tuned in it looks like guzman is chasing johnson's ground
00:50:46it's not the way it's been not the case now you know not only that but let's let's remember back
00:50:52fluo says or chavez meldrick taylor box in smartly and went in and fought with a guy got caught got
00:50:58hurt and knocked out there's only seconds left tom boom boom johnson's far too smart for that type of
00:51:03thing not that i think guzman punches like chavis he's only got six minutes to go and he can do that
00:51:10left-handed and win this like as easy as you can well shut up well the question is later will
00:51:18prince nashim hamed need this kind of stamina against his opponent a two-time world champion
00:51:25manuel medina he has predicted a second round knockout against medina very seasoned 25 year old
00:51:33rhythmic applause here in the background from this crowd at the point theater in dublin ireland
00:51:39and those are not applause of praise those are applause of disbelief that has gone this far and why are we here
00:51:47they're just trying to uh step up the energy level they want to see action they want to see this
00:51:52thing come to conclusion they don't know that johnson's right hand is hurt and he's not giving
00:51:56out those combinations anymore he's just moving staying out of harm's way that's all he's doing
00:52:02doing it well the fight's in the bag he has nothing left to prove about this particular
00:52:07but certainly certain questions will arise based on the princess a little while i think he's going to
00:52:14get a shower of booze and whistles because it doesn't look like he let him he let him looks like
00:52:20you let him go instead of just put him out when he could have and of course
00:52:26and also again not just salary donna but giving credit to the challenger ramon guzman who
00:52:32has taken some uh tough shots he has been down three times
00:52:37guzman might have went around so academic i'm going to quit adding and subtracting let's listen
00:52:54to the other corner and see what's happening
00:53:10the question now is what has bumball johnson do does the post to victory or try to close it out
00:53:40as he did in the highlight we showed earlier against ever baleño when he stopped them in the
00:53:4412th yeah but that was a close fight you didn't know who was ahead here his corner unless they're
00:53:49completely crazy knows that this guy just swept this way well it's obvious guzman needs the knockout
00:53:55his ko punch is the left hook just for the record he's 21 and 5 has 20 knockouts you know when you have
00:54:00a title on the line especially if you have an injury you have to fight in the bag what you do is don't
00:54:06worry about it exactly you look good tomorrow when did they look good tomorrow don't have to worry
00:54:10about it exactly you gotta put your pride in your back pocket every once in a while you do the smart
00:54:14thing and that that appears to be what boom is doing and johnson's corner looking mighty confident
00:54:19of victory as well they should round 12 for the lbs featherweight championship
00:54:25here comes guzman the last ditch attempt to win he's taking us locking in the process almost like
00:54:45in azuma nelson-like fashion tom boom boom johnson doing it off the ropes
00:54:55you know those are the kind of things that can be dangerous see for a moment he lost his cool
00:55:01and went went with him toe-to-toe that's the only way that's the only way that guzman can win the fight
00:55:07but doesn't appear to have that kind of power even though he doesn't even if tom puts his hands down
00:55:11and gets caught with his eyes closed he doesn't appear to have the ability to knock him out i have to
00:55:16agree with you 20 knockouts and 21 fights what does that mean have you seen his ring record there isn't
00:55:21one recognizable name on it yeah i mean you know i don't go by that i mean i'll tell you what if
00:55:26braggery was in the record yeah that should be on the record he is gutted he was gutted well there's
00:55:32no quitting him he's still in there he knows he's way behind that best and just trying with everything
00:55:37he has a minute to go guzman the oldest of seven children his father among senior central american and
00:55:44caribbean champion so boxing in the blood he learned early looks like johnson though is looking to end
00:55:51this with a knockout oh he almost had him there he almost had him he dragged his feet he did he
00:55:58lifted that right leg up with a little buckle to that knee johnson probably wondering what is holding this
00:56:03up and there he is again under 30 seconds in the 12. you hear the corner of ramon guzman screaming
00:56:31and this one goes in the book the crowd appreciative of the effort as this fight goes all the way to round 12.
00:56:57and all those whistles don't mean anything good that means people don't like it although they gave
00:57:03him a gentlemanly applaud a courteous applaud for a gutty performance by good and the crowd saluting
00:57:10goes by now as he raises his right hand it's a virtual shutout for tom boom boom johnson but
00:57:19he was fighting almost half the fight with just one hand he damaged his right hand in the process of
00:57:26the fight he mentioned it to his trainer his chief second bonzel johnson during one of the breaks
00:57:32between rounds and still baby we picked up on it here at ringside and of course the crowd didn't know
00:57:38that nor did guzman but tom boom boom johnson had one way for about half that fight only his left hand
00:57:46the right hand wasn't hurt he would have left here he's got beat tv our counterparts here we would have
00:57:53definitely knocked him out of the right hand we'll be chatting with tom boom boom johnson first so then
00:57:58we'll be standing by to get the fight doctor birdie pacheco over to the feet up he did a great job
00:58:05obviously quite a bit of interest here with tom boom boom johnson because of the rivalry
00:58:11jimmy soon to be anticipated with their hero prince nasim hamed or at least england's hero but they love
00:58:19him here as well in ireland there is a an anticipated showdown coming up perhaps in the month of december
00:58:27here's jimmy we have a unanimous decision here are the score totals judge at ringside lawrence
00:58:35wallace scores at 116 109. dr ruben garcia scores at 118 107. dave paris sees the bat 119 to 107.
00:58:49all three in favor of the winner and still champion tom boom boom johnson
00:58:58continues his reign as ibs featherweight champ raising his record to 44 2 and 1 successfully
00:59:15defending his crown 11 times now since winning the title back in february of 1993. ironically he won that
00:59:23title for the man who challenges prince nasim hamed for the wbo featherweight belt next in our main event manuel medina
00:59:30and should hamed prevail as we've been talking about we could be looking at a johnson hamed
00:59:36unification matchup for the not too distant future coming up next here at the point theater in dublin ireland
00:59:42our featured attraction the wbo featherweight championship prince nasim hamed versus manuel medina
00:59:49but cocky flamboyant thoroughly unorthodox samedi comes in 22 and 0 with 20 knockouts perhaps a little wiser
00:59:56from his last outing when he was knocked down for the first time in his career although he came right back and ruthlessly registered his 10th straight
01:00:03knockout win meanwhile the experienced medina a former two-time world champion is thinking upset
01:00:09let's take a look at some of the action from round number three in that last fight between tom johnson and ramon guzma
01:00:24this is the second knockdown in round three and tom is working the body he's just digging it digging it
01:00:28you see him he stays down there almost exclusively and then jumps up cocks and unloads with a big right
01:00:33hand springs in beautiful combination beautiful knockdown then around 70s goes right down the pipe
01:00:39with that left hand right hook puts the left hand out reaches for him and then falls straight through
01:00:44with a right hand you'll see coming up as guzman gets back to the ropes here you come left hook right hand
01:00:51one two right on the button caught him clean right down the pipe and guzman once again finding
01:00:56himself sitting down three knockdowns at all steve albert back here with the two-time world champion bobby
01:01:04just bobby were you a little uh a little surprised by the scoring i was a little surprised by one of the
01:01:10scoring 116 109 it gave quite a few rounds to guzman more than i did i gave him one i believe just the
01:01:1611th round where tom johnson just took the round off uh i really would have a hard time giving him any other
01:01:22rounds yeah 116 109 118 107 119 107 were uh the scorecards so what do you think all in all is this
01:01:30looked upon as a productive night for tom boom of johnson as he tunes up perhaps for prince nassim
01:01:36well as johnson would tell you he just wants to be the best that he could be person as well as champion
01:01:40he kept his title as first and foremost he hurt his hand that's not productive and i don't think it
01:01:45has done anything to enhance the value of a nassim fight not yet but we'll see because the other half
01:01:51is yet to come if if the hand heals properly and he does get a showdown fight from title unification
01:01:57against england's prince nassim hamed do you think that tom johnson has the correct style
01:02:03to overcome the unique style of prince nassim hamed well tom johnson has some unique defensive
01:02:08skills of his own and i met may find it hard to hit him with two or three clean and if he stares
01:02:12that time while tom's doing that swaying thing he may find one or two shots of his own on his chin so
01:02:17it could be a rate of attrition type fight who can take the most who can go the most who's in the best
01:02:21shape and who's on their game well as you know after seeing a prince nassim hamed he can often make
01:02:27good fighters decent fighters look very ordinary if you were a featherweight how would you handle
01:02:32prince nassim aside from putting tape over his mouth certainly very carefully he's the kind of guy that
01:02:38you can't pay attention to all the hoopla that he's doing the dancing the jumping the hands
01:02:42the flailing the stepping around the dancing in the ring you got to go down the middle i think double
01:02:46and triple jabs are very important countering his big shots slipping underneath him ripping upward
01:02:50uppercuts and hooks but down the middle with the right hand as alice did that was the key to
01:02:55knocking him down you made a good point earlier by saying that tom johnson knows manuel medina very
01:03:02well he would not like to fight medina for a fourth time he's beaten him two out of three times
01:03:06but it'll be interesting to see what happens in the in the main event right now the fight doctor
01:03:11ferdy pacheco is ready with tom boom boom johnson in the ring ferdy well i'm sure you didn't expect to
01:03:15be here 12 rounds with this guy he wasn't going anywhere no the guy was very determined you know
01:03:20he's one of them kind of guys they get up for these kind of fights and you don't never know what level
01:03:24you're going to have to go to you just have to be prepared anytime you get a guy you knock him down
01:03:28you can't get caught up get reckless and run in and get caught yourself the guy's a good puncher
01:03:32you know he's definitely lived up to his opposition as far as being a good puncher and he's a very
01:03:36dangerous guy throughout the fight so we you know we recognized that he was bad for the fight and
01:03:40wasn't going anywhere so we just took him all the distance let's let's take a short hall of famer for
01:03:46you here's three here's the first one you tell us here's the first one well we sat back you know we
01:03:51just looked at him and uh tried to set him up for the right hand and everything you know we was just
01:03:56looking for the right hand and there it was over top and uh i felt it coming along but i kept hitting
01:04:01him on the top of his head this is the same round later on there's another nightmare
01:04:08talk yeah we was going you know we was looking for him we figured we was going to set him up
01:04:12try to take him downstairs bring something up top make him drop his hands and that's what we did
01:04:16we tried to make him drop his hands you know hitting him with some good body shots and we came up on top
01:04:21there again with the right hand but you know for some reason the right hand was a little bit off we kept
01:04:25hitting him on the top of the head you know anytime you meet bone and bone something's going to go
01:04:28this is in the seventh round again by this time your your right hand is hurt yes the right hand was
01:04:33was a little hurt right then we didn't want i didn't want to take a chance and break the right hand you
01:04:37know we kept hitting him like we kept hitting him on top of the head and on the elbow so we just
01:04:41amount of just trying to set him up that was a good right hand you know at that point i felt i felt the
01:04:45pressure on the right hand and i didn't want to further damage the right hand so we relinquished from using it
01:04:50and just tried to outbox the guy and i knew that the right hand was the target was the punch that was going
01:04:54to get him out there but unfortunately you know we had to restrain from using it so much and thank
01:04:59you very much it was a long evening but it was one of those things you do now let's get back to steve
01:05:04albert and bobby chess thank you ferdy coming up next our main event the wbo featherweight championship
01:05:12as we go behind the scenes
