03:36Gonzalez.
03:39Johnny Gonzalez is only 31 years old but he has worn a groove in the sidewalk in as many
04:09travels around the boxing block. This is his 63rd professional bout and while there's plenty of
04:15miles on the odometer he still possesses knockout power. He recorded the 46th stoppage win of his
04:20career. A fourth round TKO triumph in April in what was a tune-up tilt in Mexico City. His second
04:26consecutive win since losing the title to Daniel Ponce de Leo in last September. He's a 14-year
04:31veteran started boxing obviously very early. He says I am not a shop-worn 31-year-old. I'm a
04:3731-year-old with a lot of experience. His first title fight was in 2005 but he says I got plenty
04:44left in the tank. We're going to find out tonight.

12:25wick on what should be a dynamite fight as Abner Marez looks to make the first defense of his
12:31126 pound crown against the former champion Johnny Gonzalez referee Jack Reiss calls for the bell
12:38we are underway the champion Marez in black with green white and red the challenger Gonzalez in
12:43dark blue with gold and white it'll be interesting to see which approach Marez takes you know he's
12:50been known to box and also get rough so it'll be interesting to see which approach he takes here
12:53against Gonzalez some have suggested that early on Marez will box and see if he can and then try
13:03and get on the inside you can see the height and reach of Johnny Gonzalez but he needs to fight
13:07tall not fight short looks like Gonzalez is trying to use that height give him to give
13:13Maddox some movement but Maddox isn't also isn't rushing in so looks like they're both trying to
13:16box each other at the moment
13:30the power punching Gonzalez has recorded seven first round knockouts Marez has yet to record
13:37one in the opening round of any of his boxing matches

13:44interesting Maddox used to be a sparring partner in uh Johnny Gonzalez's training camps you know
13:48usually you bring in young prospects young hungry guys to get you ready for for uh for your fights
13:53you know you bring in multiple guys obviously but um you never know as a young fighter when you're
13:57in a training camp with a world champion if you end up fighting him one day you know that happened
14:01when he was 20 right yeah and Marez going against his former trainer the hall of fame trainer Nacho
14:07Berestein who is uh Johnny Gonzalez's trainer he started off Marez in his pro career did
14:12Berestein and of course now he's with Clemente Medina and Maddox helped Gonzalez get ready for
14:18his ill-fated fight against Israel Vasquez back when Marez was 20 years of age but that was then
14:23this is now and he's the one with the gold Gonzalez wanting to prove that despite being in so many wars
14:29that there's still plenty left in the tank Gonzalez got a nice right hand in a moment ago but what
14:36Gonzalez has not done in round one is use the jab at all and he said that was a very important
14:42weapon for him in this fight yeah it's almost like he's kind of putting putting it out there
14:46but he's not really committed to it as much as he should be final minute of the opening round
14:50and Marez comes forward with a right hand and now attacking the body Gonzalez dropped

15:20one Gonzalez has a great left hook he's knocked out a number of fighters with it

16:03his resume shows though is that he has tremendous power with those 46 ko's and 47 now 47 and he has
16:13used that left hook to knock people out Hazumi Hasegawa a terrific champion was knocked out with
16:20that left hook by Gonzalez just like this you know Mauro it's funny you were talking about first round
16:25ko's you know was that the second round no first round first round so this is almost like you almost
16:31like you were calling it without realizing it when you were discussing first round knockouts
16:36thank you for that wow what a moment for Johnny Gonzalez and here's how it happened now
16:41the question was going to be whether he could get that left hook in he landed a perfect left
16:46hook he dipped down gave him a little fainting action and then landed the left hook Pauly take
16:52a look at those were the tough the touch jabs we're talking about we were actually saying yeah
16:56he's only touching it with the jab he's not committing to it well I guess he was setting
16:59him up because that touch jab eventually set up that hook instead that's exactly right and
17:04and he dipped down a little fainting and got that left he pulled us yes he did it's been known to
17:09happen and here's the fight well me anyway not so much you here's where the fight was stopped again
17:16the left hooks became important and as you pointed out Paulie no holding Amaras could not hold him
17:21he's trading there and this is not the thing to do when you're hurt you know he's got a heart of a
17:25lion but you gotta before you bring back that fighting spirit you gotta you want to make sure
17:29you're able to fight again he's fighting while he's hurt and against a puncher I mean Gonzalez
17:33is a monster puncher you don't want to be doing that here is yet another look at it the left hook
17:42which is a great weapon for Gonzalez we just didn't know if we're going to see it a lot in
17:46this fight because he wanted to stay back and use the jab in a straight right hand but
17:49he used that left to great effect in this fight and it was enough to for him to score a dramatic
17:55win and get his world championship back the one he gave up to Ponce de Leon that Mares won

24:01did you feel as though you were going to be able to recover after after the first knockdown yeah

24:15yeah i'm okay i was i was all right but the ref did his job you know it's his job and he felt that
24:20i wasn't ready so respect that you've had so many tough fights in succession what will you do now

31:52tonight you know he passed a very important test terrazas a very good fighter who wanted to hang
31:57on to his title had great motivation and i think leo santa cruz's performance tonight was very
32:03precise and very good what do you think paulie i was amazing he exploded out um terramoto i mean
32:09this guy lives up to his nickname every time i mean just picks up the pace carries a pace that's
32:13too fast for any of his opponents to handle you know i think the guy that's going to give trouble
32:17to santa cruz is a guy who can give him enough movement and throw off that that pressure style
32:22with a little bit of fainting a little bit of angle changing you know terrazas tried it but
32:26he was just wasn't good enough to do it so if you're not if you can try it but you're not good
32:29enough to do it he's just going to get to you i think that's an excellent point we brought that
32:32up these guys are not coming in as opponents now one guy clearly is the champ and he starched
32:37the champ but that's what we see when you have guys this close at the world-class level anything
32:41can happen and and gonzalez has proven to be a guy who will live and die by the sword and modest
32:46said it again very classy in defeat saying i'll take this loss i'll regroup spend some time with

32:56i butchered his name earlier and i know all about getting my name butchered but we saw tonight
32:59gonzalez dust abner modest and it is a stunning upset but something i think al wasn't inconceivable
33:07maybe just how quickly it happened is what left us all stunned but we knew gonzalez
33:11with 46 knockouts going in has the capacity to do what he did to modest big left hook puncher we
33:17knew that a great champion so yes this was a possibility maybe not so early and between the
33:21two fights that we had here we had lucas matisse up here we asked the hashtag battle we have the
33:26results uh even the machine i don't even know if he got down there he had to sign autographs he got
