00:00105 want to bounce what up though is big homie kim bro here with you so we've got a double dose
00:05of nfl talent joining us uh we're chatting with two players making plays each week not only on
00:11the field but also they're making plays for the kids of metro detroit let's welcome kj osborne
00:16of the washington commanders and tyler mabry of the seattle seahawks what's up what's up man glad
00:23you uh glad to have us appreciate you having us i appreciate you man i appreciate both you all
00:27joining me today uh so let's get right into it what inspired both you to start this football camp
00:32and what are your main goals for the kids who participate right i think uh me and tyler always
00:39say you know just being from from you know metro detroit area uh that when we made it to the league
00:44you know it was always our goal to give back every year we say at the camp you know it's a dream come
00:48true for ourselves to even be able to give back to the community um you know there's some guys out
00:53detroit but you know there's not a lot of guys for ipsy you know that's made it to the nfl so uh to
00:57be able to to give back to the community you know give give some kids uh you know that that role model
01:03presence um you know it's it's a it's a blessing to be able to do it and get out there to let the
01:08kids have fun run around you know teach them the fundamentals of the game compete and uh you know
01:12again just have fun uh just like they said it's a blessing to give back and one of my favorite things
01:17is seeing the same kids that come back again and again and it fills them up and it fills us up
01:22saying it shows that you know people care for one another it brings the community together so that's
01:27the main thing old coaches come back it's just uh just a whole bunch of joy that fills the area
01:32that's what we love so much yeah that's what's up i love it i love to hear it so you said the camp
01:37can't focus on the fundamentals so why is it so important for the young players to know these
01:42fundamentals and what specific fundamentals will you be emphasizing on
01:45uh the basics uh let me tell you it's effort you know you know people say you gotta do this you
01:51gotta do that but if you ain't got no effort why are you playing and that's the main thing the first uh
01:56first 30 minutes we doing uh this thing we learned at alabama camp it's just you gotta be in shape if
02:01you're not in shape what are you doing we got the five to five drill we got the l drill we got this
02:05thing called mat drills and college conditioning and if you don't have that dog in you why even playing
02:10the sport so we got a tackling circuit with ladders just a whole bunch of drills that we just
02:15want to get the kids and let them be an athlete that's the main thing we want to show them out
02:19there so just so walk us through it so what is a typical day at the camp like what's the schedule
02:25like like i know you kind of went into it but like what what specific activities do you have planned
02:31yeah that's that's a good question because this year we switching up a little bit so of course there's
02:36a there's a registration for registration uh you know we'll uh line everybody up and you know get
02:42our stretch lines and that's where we get it going man we introduce all the coaches uh you know we
02:47got the djs going and the music blasting you know it's getting the energy pumping i feel like uh with
02:52the kids we try to give them the same experience that that we have in our same nfl experiences you
02:57know when you step on the grass you step on the turf you know it's go time uh you know getting that
03:01energy going and uh you know we we get the kids stretched out and then we uh split up in groups and
03:05again like you said l drill 5-10-5 um mat drills bag drills tackling circuits you know going through
03:12the fundamentals you know uh at the end of the day football is the kids game and you know it comes
03:16down to simple things running catching tackling and throwing the football you know the and they
03:21tell us in nfl you know you don't rise to the occasion you sink to the level of your training and
03:25we're just we're doing those things you know here basketball players you know they don't start
03:29off with three-pointer they they they're right at the line you know right at the hoop just just you
03:33know shooting this close shots because that's just the fundamentals so we do that first after that
03:38we start to get into competing uh this year we are doing uh we're still kind of debating some things
03:46what do we want to do we got to kind of got a surprise for the kids uh rather we want to do a
03:50either a relay race or uh or fastest man usually we do fastest man every year but we may have a have
03:56a little surprise you know outside of that um we definitely have another surprise which is called like
04:02shape drill which is you know running back linebacker you know receiver uh defensive back
04:07you know tossing the kid the ball you know the flag football is becoming um very popular and it's
04:12about to become a you know an official you know olympic sport um you know just just tagging off you
04:16know just you got you got you know about seven yards and you know let's see if you got some moves
04:21see if you got some wiggle you know can you can you get your not get your flag pulled or pull a flag
04:25um after that we'll play uh what's called ultimate football which is very very exciting i think uh
04:32as we've seen over the years kids want to compete you know they want to do the drills you know they
04:36want to see who's the fastest man they want to do relay they want to do tug of war they want to play
04:40the game and uh ultimate football is something that me and tyler uh we went uh and uh jeff stokes
04:46another uh friend of ours that was at ips lane lincoln with us uh we went down and in high school
04:52and taught us a game called bama ball which was you know similar to ultimate football so um you
04:57know it's not it's not flag football it's not tackle football but it's a variation of it but
05:02it's uh it's a chance to compete and play and i think the kids will really really enjoy that
05:06after that we'll give some awards some mvps get some pizza sign some autographs take some pictures
05:10free food free food free food and we got we this year we have uh we have a mcdonald's sponsor which
05:16is uh which is pretty cool we got we got a bunch of sponsors but um our biggest one is uh mcdonald's
05:21this year and i think that'll be that'll be pretty cool that's what's up now so this camp is open to
05:26third and ninth graders now how do you tailor the instructions to different age groups and their
05:32skill levels oh we're going to break it up and when it comes to the stretch lines and just we have
05:38each uh just have a coach for each group just how to break it down and that's why we're just starting
05:42off with the simplicity has been lost that's why we're saying we're so heavy on the foundation the
05:48fundamentals that's where we're going to start them off and then just different age groups so
05:51kids can feel confident with their age group so that's what like maybe third and fourth fifth and
05:56sixth and just keep with like seven and ninth just so kids can stay in their same age group and they
06:00can move at the progression that they're supposed to definitely so you both you know grew up in ipsy
06:06right you both went to lincoln high school um why is it important for you to get back to the next
06:11generation of football players in your hometown uh just the main thing that they're not forgotten
06:17because you know it's so quick like what's the next big thing but it started with a small thing and me
06:22and kj came from ips Lane and lincoln we saw uh tyree waller like that was the first dude that went d1
06:27from our school so it was like well we can do it and even though me and kj transferred out we still
06:33want the kids to know hey we still love y'all our hearts still with ips Lane and lincoln we want to
06:37give back we want to pour into you and we want to keep that cycle going it's like generational
06:41blessings it's like since we did it they're going to do it and they're going to continue because
06:45i believe both of us believe there's going to be a star that came from the kj tyler mabry football camp
06:51and that that's the biggest blessing right there definitely definitely so so i guess that piggybacks
06:57on my next question so what are some of the key lessons uh or values that you hope that the kids
07:03take away from the camp uh i think something that's that's involved in all sports you know
07:09uh effort you know hard work perseverance teamwork um communication i think that's why you know
07:16sports is is so important to you know not only uh whatever your sport is but you know you take
07:22these things off to life and you're able to to utilize these these skills you know you're making
07:26friends again you know tyler me and tyler been best friends in what fifth sixth grade you know we
07:31we we we met at these types of camps you know some of my best friends that we're at weddings with
07:35we met at these types of camps um you know creating creating that bond and that chemistry a lot of
07:41these kids are you know they grow up in the same city so they will be on the same teams you know they
07:46will they have a chance to be another kj osborne tyler mabry like tyler said in this camp um but you
07:52know life life skills you know life skills we we we appreciate that we talk about that we talk about
07:57grades and we talk about you know whatever you know people's you know faith and and beliefs are
08:01we talk about you know listening to your parents and things like that um you know again not not just
08:05giving them the tools on the field but but off the field because if you don't have that um you know
08:09there is no sports that's right that's right so how do you manage your nfl careers and the
08:17responsibilities of running the camp i'll let you take this one okay all right uh my mom always
08:26have taught me and i've i've always uh you know one of my favorite scriptures you know much is given
08:30much is required and you know if if uh you know the lord blessed us with these talents and these
08:35abilities um you just know it's not for ourselves it's to you know to bless it and pour out to others
08:40so again you know uh to to show people you know we we walk the same halls you know we we went on the
08:46same streets you rode the same bus went to the same stores um you know we come from the same city as
08:50you and uh you know and we were able to do it so you know we're not too busy it's not too too too
08:57big or too small not to come back to our own community and you know to be able to give back
09:02to these kids to you know uh you know shake hands and laugh and fun have fun and you know to just to
09:08pour into the community man i think like i said it's just um it's really a dream come true for us to be
09:13able to do that um and we definitely uh that's why we emphasize it every year i think we're going
09:18on our fourth camp now um but i mean it's just it's very fulfilling and um you know it's a
09:23responsibility and it's something that um we don't take lightly we we put a lot into it and i think um
09:28you know in this first couple years um you know it's really paid off and again it's just been a
09:31dream come true and just and just to add on that um the scripture came to my mind seek first a kingdom
09:37and he shall add everything else to you and uh the main thing is like we have a great team
09:41kj's marketing team has helped us out tremendously got the sponsorships and just this each year keeps
09:47coming and they see the joy as well in the kids as much as it is on us and i just really believe
09:52that you know we keep doing this something special is going to come out of it so just how we manage
09:57it is it just know it's bigger than us and that's what makes it like you know we got to do this again
10:01like me and kj schedule is still busy but at the same time like we're gonna fight we're gonna fly
10:05up to ypsilanti michigan we're gonna have fun for two days because it's like dumb kids are always
10:11gonna remember this camp yes for sure so with this being your fourth annual camp uh now i know you've
10:18talked about different things that you're doing different this year but do you have any plans to
10:22expand the camp add any new features maybe maybe twice a year kind of thing i've had some some things
10:31uh in the in the back of my head you know like i said this there's there's myself there's tyler
10:36um there's kamal hadden that just got drafted since chiefs last year he's now with the packers he
10:40was uh he's from from uh you know like the the metro detroit area i'm really cool with donald
10:45the people's jones who was you know just with the detroit lions with the cast tech just signed with
10:50the with the saints i'm cool with armor i'm cool with jmo um so even even you know down the line you
10:55know i have you know been able to brainstorm some things uh kind of just in the back of my head like
11:00you know maybe we'll try to get some of those guys out especially like the lions players you know
11:03obviously they would love if i could come out there it would love if jaymond wilson could come
11:07out there you know um no those are some some guys i kind of keep up with in the in the offseason
11:12especially i'm around i think i'm supposed to be doing some training with him uh in california
11:15this this offseason um but you know in the future maybe you know getting the chance to get those guys
11:21out there um you know donald people jones again he runs a camp i think up at cast uh you know every
11:26every offseason so that's definitely something in the back of my head that i've thought about and
11:30maybe we'll see can we um you know can we we'll be able to do something definitely so i think you
11:37you can already kind of touched upon this but what impact do you hope that this camp will have on the
11:42ypsilanti community in the long run i'll say just to continue to invest invest into your the children
11:49i think uh sometimes they get like from again they get forgotten about and then like these things are
11:54kids that will never forget and this is how the community expands this is how the football program
11:59grows the basketball program grams like everybody it's a belief and that's what we want to believe
12:04if the kids have the belief the parents have the belief the teachers will have the belief
12:07and we want to keep that hope alive in the community definitely man this is so dope so what advice would
12:15you give to that young expiring football player who's listening right now or want to play in the nfl
12:20man my number one thing was believe in yourself believe in yourself you got to believe in yourself
12:27uh the first thing they say you know when you're fourth or fifth grade when they say what do you want
12:32to be when you grow up i want to be in the nfl you know my goal when i was a kid i want to be the
12:36first player to play in the mlb the nba and nfl that was my that was my dream when i was a kid
12:41and obviously you know but the first thing they say is you know okay well what's your backup plan
12:45um not that you should not have a backup plan but believe in yourself and and and go all in man go
12:52all in and work hard you know understand that um you know and i always tell the kids it's not just
12:57in football it's in it's you want to be a lawyer a doctor a a firefighter you know it's going to take
13:04a tremendous level of hard work and you know perseverance you know it's not you got to take the
13:08stairs you're not going to be able to take the elevators there's no easy way there's no short
13:12no secret the secret is hard work the secret is doing the work when when the doors are closed and
13:17nobody can see you and you're not recording it and posting it um you know that's you know we were
13:22growing up i'm doing push-ups i'm doing sit-ups you know i'm doing i'm i'm trying to drink my
13:27chocolate milk so i can have strong muscles you know this this was a lifetime you know journey and
13:31it doesn't happen overnight you don't become an overnight success um so i would tell the kids to
13:36believe in yourself work hard continue to work hard and just continue to stack days you're not
13:42going to get it again overnight it's not going to happen in a week it may not happen in an off
13:45season but over time you know year after year after year um you know you will start to see the the
13:51progressions when i was a kid you know i was i was a two-star recruit i had one scholarship offer
13:58you know i was just explaining to my to my team now i watched the commanders i think i was probably
14:02ranked 2000 something you know in the rival stuff you know they got all this nil stuff a lot of that
14:07stuff can be you know uh discouraging and you know hurt her confidence but i promise you
14:11i was i was a late bloomer if you continue to put in the work you know over time you know you will
14:16start to uh sin from your from your peers so i would say you know believe in yourself uh continue to put
14:21in the work and um you know again i always have to say you know keep god first that's facts man i was
14:27about to say you got to keep god first absolutely and uh i'll just say just going off what kate uh said
14:33as well like our whole journey god has been the foundation our parents distilled into us and
14:38it just he carried us throughout this whole journey but the main thing i would tell like a
14:42young athlete is this be in the moment you know you don't know when it's going to be your last time
14:47playing the game of football basketball baseball whatever be in the moment and be a kid but also
14:52challenge yourself ask yourself did i give it all i did today did i get my best did i give effort
14:57and just challenge yourself every single day and that will push you because you are your biggest
15:01competition don't worry about what they're doing in california florida do what you're doing in
15:06ypsilana michigan that's what matters so that's all i'll say definitely because one of the phrases
15:11i live by definitely is to get one percent better every day right and it doesn't matter what you do
15:17you know if you're pushing a broom or you know working on a rocket ship you know i'm saying like
15:22get one percent better every day man so all right for sure so kj tyler the football camp is at
15:30lincoln high school stadium may 31st now you said the kids can still come and register
15:37you know yeah they can the walk-ups are are accepted uh you know i just i just spoke to a
15:42kid today he thought he thought he couldn't could come because it was uh it was sold out it's not
15:46sold out sold out online he definitely can walk up we got extra flags we got extra shirts uh just
15:51just bring a smile on some cleats you know that's all you need that's dope man so uh registration i'm
15:57looking here registration starts at nine o'clock yes sir all right registration nine o'clock camp
16:02starts at 10 parent pickups is at 1 30 make sure you're there on time parents get your kids get
16:09your kids your kids because they're gonna be put to work clean up crew man man well i appreciate you
16:18guys for stopping through man and it's all love and again the camp is still going on may 31st in
