00:00105.9 KISS FM, Detroit's Classic R&B. It's your big homie, Kimbrough, here with you.
00:04I have, you know, it's not very, it's very rare that you get to interview someone that you know.
00:13It's another thing to interview someone that you grew up with and, like, used to play Batman and Robin back in Halloween.
00:23I want to introduce you all to some. I know you've probably heard them on the Mason and Star Show.
00:28So, probably seen him on Tubi, probably seen him at one of the various clubs around the city.
00:35Actor, comedian, Buddy Love. What up, though?
00:38What up, though? What up, though? What's up, man?
00:40What's going on with you, man?
00:41Man, I can't call it, man. I just didn't like the story how you didn't tell him I was Batman and you was Robin.
00:46You were never Batman.
00:48Yeah, I think I wore the big drawers when he came in.
00:50That was never a thing. I have the pictures to prove it.
00:52Okay, you're going to have to show me that, man, because I was telling you, Robin, come to the Batmobile.
00:56Anyway, we're about to get into that.
01:01So, you out here, you're doing your thing.
01:04It's been, how many years have you been in the game?
01:07June 9th and May, four years. So, yesterday was four years doing comedy and acting.
01:11Four years. Four years.
01:12And how you loving it?
01:13Oh, man, it's dope, man. You know what I'm saying, man?
01:15Traveling state to state, meeting these celebrities, man.
01:18Rubbing shoulders with these great comedians. It's pretty dope.
01:21You know what I'm saying? Chasing your dream and getting out there and believing in yourself and betting in yourself and making it happen.
01:27And it's crazy because, like, that's why I said, like, this is like a full circle moment because you are here doing your thing.
01:34Yeah.
01:35And I'm here doing mine.
01:37It's fire.
01:37It's like, wow.
01:39Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it's crazy. It's a mix for both of us. You're the comedian. You're the radio, man. You know what I'm saying?
01:47It's like, yeah, like you said, it's wild. It's a dream. But at the end of the day, I remember when you said, man, being a server wasn't your thing, man.
01:54You had to go out here and really do something that you love to do.
01:58I remember when you first hopped into the radio, man, you're like, and then I look at you, man.
02:02You got your own show and everything. Same with me.
02:05I had to hop into my passion, get on that stage and really show the world the gift that I've been holding in.
02:10I've been a clown. You know what I'm saying?
02:12I know where you're coming from. I know where you're coming from.
02:14So what inspired you to get in the game?
02:17Man, tell you the truth, man.
02:19Like, I ran into a spot in my life where nothing was working for me.
02:23And the thing about it is I've done everything in my life instead of, like, really diving into me and believing in me.
02:30And my passion was to make people laugh.
02:32And I never took it serious.
02:34So when I got the opportunity to showcase my talents at the Sports Zone on the East Side, man, shout out to Cardone, Soul Boy, Plug, everybody, you know what I'm saying, that put that together for me, you know what I'm saying?
02:47And they gave me an opportunity to showcase my talents.
02:50And after that, man, it was like the energy that I got from it.
02:53And I knew that this was it, you know?
02:56So, yeah.
02:56So when I hopped on that stage and did my first couple of shows, I said, oh, yeah, it's going down.
03:02I feel that.
03:03I remember that first show.
03:04And that room was packed.
03:07And I don't think I've ever laughed at anything you've said so hard in my life.
03:14Like, you've said some funny stuff over the years, but you was out there, you was doing your thing, and I couldn't have been prouder to see you do your thing out there.
03:23It was just like a night and day kind of thing.
03:26Yeah, man.
03:27It was crazy.
03:28It was dope.
03:29Just to get on that stage, to tell y'all the truth, I was so nervous.
03:33I really didn't know how to even deliver comedy like I do not, you know?
03:38Just getting on that stage, raw talent, I just said, you know what, I'm going to get up here.
03:43I'm going to do my thing, and how it's going to go, it's going to go.
03:46Because like I said, as a kid, I didn't grow up watching Def Comedy Jam or saying, oh, I'm going to be a comedian when I grow up, and this is going to be it.
03:53I was just that, you know?
03:55I was just the silly guy around, you know?
03:56So like I said, just going up there and truly seeing the energy that I got from that first show let me know, like, yeah, there's something in this that I got to keep going.
04:05Definitely.
04:05So how has growing up in the city influenced your comedy style?
04:12Man, to tell you the truth, man, I don't think it's the city that influenced my comedy style.
04:20I already had this, you know what I'm saying, character on me.
04:26Just getting into the game and learning from the OGs like Martini Harris, Howie Bell, Chanel Ferris, the Tony Ronis, you know?
04:35Just listening to a lot of these vets just coming up in the game, the Bill Hills, you know?
04:40Just listening to these guys, the Mike Bonners, yo, Foolishest, you know what I'm saying?
04:45Simply Chanel, everybody.
04:48A lot of things when I bottled it together, it was like, you know what?
04:53This comedy thing is dope, you know?
04:55And I had to take it serious to the point where it's like I can't play around with this because at the end of the day, a lot of people want to see you fail in this.
05:04It's true.
05:04You know, and not even locally.
05:07It's all over, you know, especially when you have a light on you.
05:10But what, like, influencing me, it didn't.
05:13Like, you know what I'm saying?
05:14My comedy style is cool.
05:16I'm straight to the point, you know what I'm saying?
05:17I talk about relationships, my kids, you know what I'm saying, being broke, you know what I'm saying, dealing with old women with no teeth, you know, things of that sort.
05:26So, you know, it's just like real life, a natural thing that comes out of me, you know?
05:31So just living in Detroit, it definitely put skin on me because if you're a Detroit comedian, you know what I'm saying, you know the game is not easy in these Detroit rooms.
05:41I'm going to tell you one thing, shout out to Detroit, you know, because a lot of these rooms made me.
05:47A lot of these rooms Detroit didn't know, they didn't have to boo you, you know what I'm saying?
05:51They just stare at you crazy, you know what I'm saying?
05:53And if they did boo you, you went back home and put that skin on you to be like, yo, man, if I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this.
05:59So that's what gave me the skin to go out of town, get out of my comfort zone and rock these shows.
06:04So putting on for the city is one thing that I love doing, you know what I'm saying?
06:08Because it's always going to be my home.
06:10But living in New York now, man, it's a different type of, you know, pace.
06:14The concrete jungle.
06:15Yeah, yeah, I'm trying to tell you, it's a different type of pace, man.
06:19It teaches me crazy time management, man.
06:22But at the end of the day, like, you know, it's a beautiful thing, man, to be from Detroit, you know what I'm saying?
06:27And representing my city all over.
06:28Definitely.
06:29I mean, especially in a city with how many people in there?
06:32Like, what, 10 million people?
06:33Man, listen, bro, you see a million people every day, man.
06:37It's crazy, bro.
06:38I don't know how you can be in a city with that many mean people.
06:41I'm going to try to tell you this, man.
06:43A New Yorker will lose his mind in Detroit.
06:46I'm telling you, my ears have got so much peace these couple of days.
06:50Like, I'm trying to tell you, man, I have never been in a city so quiet.
06:55Like, I'm telling you, I'm like, I am so glad to be back in a quiet spot because I don't hear no people.
07:00I don't hear no sirens.
07:02Man, even bites are louder than anything, man.
07:04So, you know, it is crazy.
07:06It really seems like the pandemic is going on here.
07:09Like, no, for real, man, it shocks me that I'm saying this because I'm used to seeing so many people, like a New Yorker, come in here and be like, yo, where everybody at?
07:20Right.
07:21Like, for real, for real.
07:22Like, the buildings, you looking in the sky, I don't see one building.
07:25Like, it's kind of wild, man.
07:27It seems like somebody came through with an eraser and just like, you know.
07:31You can head downtown and see all the buildings.
07:33They're downtown, but the thing about it is, in New York, I can look at here and see the skyline.
07:38So, you know what I'm saying?
07:39So, yeah, it is wild.
07:41But like I said, Detroit is a different type of beast.
07:43It is a different type of beast.
07:45Now, what part of New York are you in?
07:46I'm in Brooklyn.
07:47Oh, okay.
07:48Yeah, I'm in Brooklyn.
07:48Yeah, man.
07:48It's not do or die.
07:50Yeah, yeah.
07:50You know, I'm making my way out there.
07:52I thought it was a good place, you know.
07:54I'm telling people where I'm staying.
07:55I'm thinking I'm about to get congratulations.
07:57But instead of people telling me congratulations, they like, oh, be careful.
08:02So, I'm like, oh, I guess I'm in that spot.
08:05Yeah.
08:06I mean, I guess that's anywhere you go.
08:08But definitely, I mean, Brooklyn is pretty iconic.
08:12Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:13It's dope, man.
08:14I'm trying to tell you.
08:14Eddie Murphy's from there.
08:16Jay-Z's from there.
08:17Notorious B.I.G.'s from there.
08:19One of my cougars from there.
08:20Shout out to Lisa.
08:21But, yeah, man.
08:23You know what?
08:24I'm just saying I got to give Lisa a shout out.
08:27You know what I'm saying?
08:27She giving me her EBT card.
08:29I got it in my pocket right now, dog.
08:30You know what I'm saying?
08:31We listen and we don't judge.
08:35Yeah, yeah, man.
08:36Shout out to Lisa and them.
08:37You know what I'm saying?
08:38Yeah.
08:38Yeah.
08:39So, you're in a few movies.
08:43Yeah.
08:44Now, just on Tubi or are we on any other networks?
08:46Yeah, yeah.
08:47I'm on Amazon Prime, too.
08:48Okay.
08:49Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:49But my main role just dropped out, Friendly Date.
08:52You know what I'm saying?
08:53Directed by Gary Crenshaw.
08:55You know, so he gave me the opportunity to get that role and do my thing up in there,
09:00man.
09:00So, yeah, it's a lot of people in that movie, man, that you would love to see, man.
09:04But that gave me an opportunity to stretch, you know, my talents out, man.
09:08I appreciate him for that, man.
09:10Because certain roles, you know what I'm saying, people talk about Tubi and say, oh, Tubi's
09:15not this, Tubi's not that.
09:16I just feel that Tubi gives you that type of wreck to be on a, you know what I'm saying,
09:23a professional movie scene.
09:26You know what I'm saying?
09:27It's not at the top, but it's giving you the work for it, you know?
09:30Yeah, so, you know.
09:32And I've never understood the phrase Tubi actor.
09:38Yeah.
09:39I've never understood that phrase.
09:40I hate it.
09:40Because it's like, you're either an actor or you're not.
09:43Yeah, yeah.
09:43They be like, you're a Tubi actor.
09:45I'm like, nah, bro, my projects is just on Tubi for nah.
09:48You know what I'm saying?
09:48You know what I'm saying?
09:49So, yeah, they try to say, oh, you're this, you're that.
09:51Nah, bro, like, this is the beginning.
09:53Like, this is the step one before you become that great artist.
09:58Because I know a couple of people that done Tubi movies that went and done bigger projects.
10:03You know what I'm saying?
10:04So, at the end of the day, I look at my Tubi movies as a resume.
10:08You know, I got my EPK up.
10:10You know, I got my movie reel.
10:12So, if I got to pitch it out to somebody, they can be like, oh, he can do this scene,
10:15that scene, and that scene.
10:16I don't think about what they feel about Tubi because, at the end of the day,
10:21half of these people not even doing nothing but watching it still.
10:23We're watching Tubi.
10:24Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
10:26So, at the end of the day, but, yeah, Tubi getting out of control, man,
10:29like, in certain things, man.
10:30They got to stop.
10:32I was watching this one movie, man, and he was playing the son,
10:36and in part two, he became the father.
10:38You know, we got to stop doing that.
10:41Yeah, I don't know about that one.
10:43They got to stop switching that.
10:44We got to put new characters in the movie, man.
10:46So, basically, what you're saying is they got to have, you know, better development
10:51as far as storylines and stuff.
10:53Yeah, but, you know, everybody got to start from somewhere.
10:55Yeah.
10:55You know, and I don't knock nobody, man.
10:57I shot a Tubi movie on the iPhone, man.
11:00Yeah, yeah.
11:00So, they done done a movie on the iPhone.
11:03Yeah, they do movies on the iPhone.
11:03So, like I said, I don't knock any directors that's out here making that Tubi money or Tubi actors
11:09or whatever they want to consider it.
11:11Go ahead and do your thing, man.
11:12Don't matter what they feel about it.
11:14If you're extra up there showing you itty-bitties or whatever, you know, just make it work.
11:19Itty-bitties.
11:20Yeah, yeah.
11:21And y'all stop getting mad because we don't want to come to the movie premiere because
11:24y'all showing you itty-bitties on camera.
11:26Oh, Lord.
11:28Oh, my God.
11:28I just had to put that out there.
11:29So, how many movies have you been in so far?
11:32Man, now currently it's 10 and two on Amazon Prime.
11:36Okay.
11:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, man.
11:38It's dope, man.
11:39Now, what do we have coming up next?
11:40As far as what we got coming up next, I'm performing at the Comedy Store in July 10th in Cali, Hollywood Boulevard.
11:48Okay.
11:49So, yeah, that's a big thing for me as far as with my career going on.
11:53So, yeah, you know, when people step on that stage, you know, it's life changing, you know what I'm saying?
11:58Comedy Store is major.
11:58Yeah, from all the greats that ever stepped on that stage, they said as soon as they stepped off that stage, it happened.
12:05So, and my drive has always been like that, you know, I go by, you know, my saying, push, praying to something happens.
12:12That's right.
12:12And that's all I've been doing these four years is praying to something happen and everything has been happening that I want.
12:18So, right now, man, I'm just on one of them manifesting highs, you know.
12:22I'm just riding this wave with a buddy love thing, you know, and making it happen, you feel me?
12:28So, it's a dope thing, bro.
12:31Like, every day I wake up, I shock myself, man, because I put in a lot of legwork and I still got work to do, you know.
12:39But as far as with the legwork that I put in, people thinking it's luck, man, but not seeing what goes on behind the scenes.
12:46I was in New York eating $2 meals, you hear me?
12:49Yeah.
12:49You know, like, you got to understand, man, riding them Subways, it ain't free, it ain't cheap.
12:54Rent $2,300, you know what I'm saying?
12:56So, at the end of the day, like, people here, like, I really come back and forth from that year and a lot of people are privileged, you know what I'm saying?
13:05And think that they're better, but, man, there's people out there real life struggling.
13:08Being messed up in New York is a different type of messed up.
13:11I can believe that.
13:12You hear me?
13:12And chasing your dream on comedy, you know, comedy doesn't pay what people think, you know what I'm saying?
13:18Like, people are looking at my page, they think I'm making bands.
13:21Like, yo, let me hold something, bruh.
13:23I can barely pay my rent.
13:26I can barely get on the bus, you know what I'm saying?
13:28But at the end of the day, with my drive and everything that I'm accomplishing on the way, I know that check coming.
13:35You know, ain't got no choice but to come.
13:36Right.
13:37You know, because one thing about it, I'm going to put that work in, and they going to have to outwork me,
13:41because I'm coming for it, you know?
13:44And at the end of the day, I stepped in this comedy game like a real King Kong, you know, real beast.
13:49And at the end of the day, I ain't stopped since.
13:51Since I got off that sports door on stage, it's crazy.
13:54That is true.
13:55You know?
13:55You've been going.
13:56Yeah.
13:57For sure.
13:57For sure.
13:58Yeah, because they say the same thing about radio.
14:00Yeah.
14:00Yeah.
14:01We make enough money to be broke.
14:03For sure.
14:04For sure.
14:04We make enough money to be broke.
14:05For sure.
14:06It's a very, it can be a very volatile business.
14:09I would put it like that.
14:11Yeah.
14:11So, anything you want to leave with the listeners?
14:16The people, because I know you've been on Mason and Star, you've been on Kiss before,
14:21but like, you're on the Kimbrough show now.
14:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:24I'm on the family show.
14:25You know what I'm saying?
14:26You're on the family show.
14:27There's no nepotism here.
14:28Yeah.
14:28This was just divine intervention.
14:30It was meant to happen.
14:31Yeah.
14:31And it was going to happen.
14:32So, what do you want to leave with the listeners today?
14:35Man, I'm telling you, to all the dreamers out there, I say chase your dreams, man.
14:40It's such a beautiful thing to be out here and just bet on you.
14:46So many things that we go through mentally, you know, I'm telling you, just believe in God
14:52and know that he got your back in anything that you want to accomplish in life, you can,
14:57you know.
14:58You just got to have a little bit of faith, you know.
15:00Not even a little bit, just a little tiny bit, you know.
15:03Just a little bit.
15:03Anything you want, it'll happen, for sure.
15:06Facts.
15:07For sure.
15:08Buddy Love, my cuz-o.
15:10Yeah.
15:10Appreciate you stopping by, man.
15:11All day, all day, man.
15:12All that.
15:12Spilt the coffee on me, buddy.
15:14Yeah, man.
15:15We here, man.
15:15But, yeah, I appreciate you, boss, man.
15:17I'll talk to you soon.
15:18All right.
15:19All right.
15:19Yeah.
15:19All right.
