00:00Welcome into today's training camp practice report brought to you by Safety Insurance, Alex Barth, Scott Zolak, a.k.a. Zoe Unfiltered.
00:08I like it.
00:09We ended the last show, Zoe, talking about what kind of numbers we were going to do, and I think we'll make a pledge to the viewers right now.
00:16The more you guys tune in, the more Zoe and I will swear.
00:19All you little fuckheads out there, get on the, call your fucking friends and tell them to tune in because you're going to be so fucking entertained by shit.
00:26This is locker room unfiltered shit we're going to talk about.
00:30Again, we did.
00:31Your balls hitting the ground, all that shit.
00:32Let's go.
00:33We did 16,000 yesterday, so I say let's fucking go, Zoe.
00:37Let's get this thing started.
00:38This is so fucking.
00:39Love, this is great you did this.
00:41What was your.
00:42You've had some stupid ass ideas over here.
00:43This is one of your fucking best, Jim.
00:46Jesus Christ.
00:47So what was your biggest takeaway from practice today, Zoe?
00:50I think rebounding at the offense.
00:51If you look at the first drill, the first team period, I thought the defense won that.
00:56Now, the defense have both corners down.
00:58Carlton Davis has not practiced yet.
01:00For whatever reason, the non-football injury thing.
01:02And then, obviously, Christian Gonzalez going down.
01:04I don't expect to see him next couple weeks.
01:06Nor should we.
01:07Like, let him take his time.
01:08Right.
01:08You're down your two corners, so it's going to be high reps for those guys.
01:11But I thought Drake missed a couple guys.
01:13He had a wheel route.
01:13He overthrew by about five yards.
01:15He wasn't real crisp in that.
01:16But I thought, towards the end of the day, when they came down to the closed end here, red zone throwing, he threw a dime to Stephon Diggs, who had great body control in that back right corner.
01:26And then Dobbs had one on the left side of Baker, who I thought had the catch of the day.
01:29Unbelievable catch.
01:29Sort of an acrobatic 50-50 ball boundary catch.
01:33And then.
01:34Booty had another toe tap.
01:36That was kind of similar to the Diggs one, right?
01:37Booty and Bourne, right?
01:38Booty and Bourne had one.
01:38Yeah, Bourne had one, too.
01:40So, I'm with you.
01:41I think the big thing.
01:42So, up and down day.
01:43That's what I really took from it.
01:45There's the bounce back you get from Drake May.
01:48I think we're still waiting to see him start strong.
01:51A lot of these days have felt like we're talking about him bouncing back.
01:53But you'd rather him bounce back than just suck all day.
01:56So, it was a good bounce back.
01:57And I think the thing you really saw from May today, a lot of those throws you talked about, it's timing, it's placement.
02:05Even though he's rotating with, like, eight or nine different receivers in these practices, now that Jalen Polk is back, there's chemistry there.
02:12Like, it feels like he's really starting to build chemistry with these receivers.
02:16He is.
02:17He is.
02:17And I think that's a good thing.
02:18And I think it's imperative for a guy like Polk to get out there, whether or not he's going to do anything or not.
02:22Like, yesterday, I know he had a couple reps with the first crew.
02:25But that's straight classmate.
02:26I want to see if he's got anything left in the tank.
02:29But Baker, I think, right now is ahead of him, even after he lined up incorrectly and had to kind of shut the drill down after he caught the touchdown.
02:36But Mike Reese was up here, and he likes what he was seeing there, you know, at the end.
02:40Sort of agrees with me on rough start, but I thought they polished things up, cleaned that shit up.
02:45And there's enough to get after, guys, in the room.
02:50So, you'll go back and watch the film tonight.
02:52But the best point I thought Mike brought up is no interceptions, no turnovers yet.
02:56Throughout camp.
02:57And we remember the first OTA practice where it was, hey, he was 14.
03:01It was four picks on the first six passes.
03:02Four picks on the first six passes.
03:04It ends up 14 and 18.
03:05But, like, not good.
03:06Not good at all.
03:07And with Gonzalez picking him off twice.
03:09There was one turnover sort of play.
03:12There was another bad snap.
03:13So, this time it was Garrett Bradbury who put the ball on the ground.
03:17It was Jared Wilson yesterday.
03:18Wilson also had one last week.
03:20Are those – I don't know how much you've seen of those, and I know it kind of varies case to case.
03:24But, all right, like, the two bad snaps were May and Wilson.
03:28So, it's the same two guys and one's a rookie.
03:30Now, Bradbury, who's a veteran.
03:31Is this maybe a Drake-May thing as opposed to the centers that it's been, you know, three fumbled snaps six days in?
03:36The nice thing about the quarterbacks, the quarterbacks always take the blame for it.
03:39You know, put the center, throw him under the bus.
03:41But, you'll be able to tell in film and that.
03:43They'll know who the real culprit is.
03:45And, hey, this is like – you know, remember Damian Wood, if you can't snap shotgun, we're not going to let you snap shotgun.
03:49Yeah.
03:50We'll bring in a guy, you know, off the street, have him go in there and just indicate to him.
03:53It's Mike Compton, right?
03:53Yeah, Mike Compton.
03:54So, it's kind of one of those things.
03:57Like, they'll tolerate it for now.
03:59Yeah.
03:59But, by next week, you've got to clean that up.
04:01And, in fact, he continues, they just won't go to him.
04:03What did you think of the offensive line play overall?
04:05I thought Jared Wilson had another really good day.
04:07I thought Will Campbell had another solid day.
04:09A little shaky on the right side.
04:10Morgan Moses left practice early.
04:12We'll get to that.
04:12Two really extremely hot days.
04:14And, I think for big guys, it's very hard to push through and sort of be at your best.
04:18And, it's up to the coaches to keep them going.
04:19I know Vrabel got on Will Campbell down at the far end when he had his head covered yesterday.
04:24Hey, Will, I thought, you know, grew up in Louisiana.
04:26This is nothing.
04:26It's like spring for you.
04:27Let's go.
04:28You know, get up.
04:29So, there's going to be enough opportunities to push these guys.
04:33You're just not seeing enough continuity up front.
04:35Where Moses, Morgan Moses went in on his own, under his own power.
04:39Walked in.
04:40I don't know what that was about.
04:41I don't know either.
04:42But, he didn't return.
04:42He left early.
04:43Could be a heat-related thing.
04:44He left after one-on-ones.
04:45Yeah.
04:45Yeah.
04:46He didn't make it to 11.
04:47Because, first snap of 11 was Demontre Jacobs.
04:49Then, they lost.
04:50You see her Durant, who's a backup tackle.
04:52He had to walk off kind of slowly with the trainers.
04:54And, then, at the end of practice, I didn't see what happened.
04:56The defensive line was probably their most convincing win of the day.
04:59Just collapsed the offensive line on a run play.
05:03Bradbury's at the bottom of the pile.
05:04Comes up.
05:04Kind of limps off.
05:05This was, like, the last or second to last play of practice.
05:08He didn't go back until everybody else did.
05:10But, he was off on the sideline with the trainers.
05:12And, he didn't do the conditioning at the end of practice.
05:15Everybody else does.
05:16I mean, you lose three linemen in one practice.
05:18It's tough.
05:18It's not good for anybody.
05:19Especially, this team that doesn't have a lot of depth.
05:21So, definitely something to keep an eye on.
05:22And, a guy I don't see making a ton of mistakes is Cole Strange.
05:25Like, a lot of people didn't give him a fucking chance coming into this camp.
05:28You know, because you're thinking, okay, he's been behind the eight ball.
05:30Is he a center?
05:30They try to work him at center.
05:32And, maybe that is a spot at guard.
05:33So, we'll see if he sticks there.
05:34And, that's a big one.
05:35Because, he'll be playing next to Will Campbell.
05:37Will Campbell's not going anywhere.
05:38He's going to be your guy.
05:39What?
05:39So, and he's battling with Jared Wilson right now at left guard.
05:42And, that thing seems 50-50, but we've also seen Jared Wilson at center.
05:46So, some people point to, well, a center in Josh McDaniel's offense where there's a lot
05:50of mental responsibilities, that could be tough.
05:52But, the flip side, if you want to get Jared Wilson in the lineup, which he's playing like
05:55he deserves to be in the lineup, okay, you don't have him at center.
05:58But, now you have two rookies on the left side next to each other in Will Campbell and
06:02Jared Wilson.
06:02Like, which of those would be more, I don't want to say alarming, but which of those would
06:07be a bigger issue?
06:08Rookie center or two rookies next to each other?
06:10Rookie center, if we're back to the old Josh McDaniel's offense.
06:12So much is predicated on it.
06:14You know, David Andrews will come up here and he'll be talking, you know, once a week
06:17with us.
06:17And, we'll be looking at that center play a lot this year.
06:20And, David has great insight into that because he played that offense for so long and played
06:24at such a high level.
06:24Like, the offense starts with the quarterback in the center.
06:27Yeah.
06:28And, that's the best thing.
06:28I like it.
06:29Now, everybody's saying, well, this is Josh.
06:32Josh is forcing his offense on Drake.
06:33Josh is forcing his ability to move formation, to dictate coverage, and his protection, which is
06:40great for Drake.
06:41Like, he's not going to run the same pass play as Brady.
06:43No.
06:44He's going to understand what Drake does well.
06:46Drake throws a great deep ball.
06:48Drake throws a great post-corner ball.
06:50He throws a great will route.
06:52You're going to incorporate those routes into what Drake does.
06:54So, it doesn't matter if you go zero out slot, 56 protection.
06:57Like, that's the stuff that gets you back to protecting the quarterback.
07:00And, you're going to be able to adjust that throughout the course of the day.
07:02So, as long as you get those fucking calls right up front, that's going to be fine.
07:05And, along those lines, they're moving Drake May around a lot.
07:09It's been a lot of play action, a lot of bootlegs, moving pockets, things like that.
07:13They are building it to Drake May's strengths.
07:15Like, people forget, Kim Newton wasn't running the Tom Brady offense either.
07:18Mack Jones wasn't running the Tom Brady offense.
07:20They're all doing their own things.
07:21It's the same core concepts, but it's not the same thing from start to finish.
07:25On defense, I think there's a case to be made.
07:28Through two padded practices, the best player on the field has been Caleb on chase on.
07:31Had another second half today.
07:33He's been getting after it.
07:34And, what's most crazy about it to me, though, is he's not one of these big, powerful guys
07:39that's going to put the pads on and dominate.
07:40He's a speed rusher.
07:41That's the kind of guy that usually fades when the pads come on.
07:44He's stepped it up here the last two days.
07:47A long way to go, but if he can be this kind of guy and is kind of picking up where he left off
07:52at the end of last season, he had a good close to last season, that would be a major development
07:55if he can be a borderline sack of game guy.
07:58That would be great.
07:59That would be great.
08:00So, they need somebody to step up like that.
08:01But, you've got two really hard, tough, heat-related practices that you just finished.
08:06I could see them gearing things back a little bit tomorrow, throw the players a little bit
08:09of a bone, gear it back up on Thursday, and then it's, of course, the scrimmage and under
08:13the lights in the stadium on Friday night, right?
08:15Yes.
08:15Yeah.
08:16Okay.
08:16So, I could say, I mean, you usually, you can do no more than three days in a row in pads,
08:20and there's some things you have to do.
08:22If you have three days in a row in pads, you then have to have three calendar days in a row
08:26not in pads, which they'd have, because they'd be not in pads Thursday, in stadium Friday,
08:29and then off on Saturday.
08:31So, they have one more padded day this week, basically.
08:34So, do you think it would be better to take that, you know, do unpadded tomorrow, then
08:37ramp it up Thursday, or go three days in a row in pads, and then just kind of cruise to
08:41the end of the week?
08:42Well, I think you need a little something before Friday, because you're going to sit
08:44around watching all Friday, meet all day Friday, and then you'll practice until nighttime.
08:47So, I'd gear it back a little bit tomorrow, do a little special teams practice, and then
08:51crank it back up, half crank it up for Thursday, and then ease it into Friday night.
08:57So, you a big Hulk Hogan fan?
08:59Sure.
08:59You ever do that?
09:01Hey, brother, we got to do, like, sort of a tribute to Hulk.
09:04What you going to do, brother, when fucking Hulkamania rips his shirt off and takes your
09:10nuts and shoves them up, you know, what are you going to do then, brother?
09:13You know?
09:13Hey, Thunderlips here, Rocky, you know, you thought this was from charity, my man, not
09:19fucking me.
09:20I get after it every fucking day.
09:21That's a good Hulk Hogan.
09:22We got to get you and Sean Silver during Macho Man Randy Savage.
09:25Oh, he can do.
09:27It's so good.
09:28It's so good.
09:28I can do that, too.
09:29Macho Man.
09:31Yeah.
09:31What do you want?
09:32See, this thing, I'm getting this geared up for, I collect this rag, and I just keep
09:37it for it.
09:38You know, I have a sinus problem or a ketchup, and I won't wash this until the end of the
09:43year, and I travel with it in my bag, and I keep it right between me and Bob Soce on
09:47game day and on a flight, and he just sort of just pushes away from it.
09:51Yeah.
09:52But, so, the season has started, and so's rag has officially kicked things off here.
09:58That means we're in the camp.
09:59So unfiltered.
10:00That's what you get.
10:00That'll do it for today's Patriots training camp report brought to you by Safety Insurance.
10:04Fucking right, Zo.
10:05So, we'll be back tomorrow, same time, same place, Patriots fourth practice of the week,
10:09seventh overall.
10:10Until then, more on the sports.
