00:00It's 105.1 The Bounce. I'm Leisha B from The Morning Rollout, and I am talking with hip-hop royalty, and you know I couldn't do justice but give an introduction real quick.
00:10We're talking with two living legends who have shaped the culture from coast to coast, one who is the voice of the South, and one who has influenced the Bay's finest.
00:18So, give it up to two of the greatest rappers. We gotta talk to Sir Too Short and Scarface. How you doing, fellas?
00:27What's up, what's going on down?
00:28How are you guys feeling? We're so close to the function going down. How are we feeling? What's the vibes?
00:38I'm ready. Yeah, I'm ready.
00:41I'm ready to let Detroit see what it do.
00:43I know that's right.
00:47Let me break the function down for you.
00:52Go ahead. Let me know.
00:55The function is a function.
00:58Exactly. That's why I know it's going to be a good time, rain or shine.
01:02Yeah, nah, it's a good time, rain or shine, but we're going to pray for the sunshine this time.
01:09Exactly. Exactly.
01:10Because we got real live drummers and guitarists and keyboard players and horn players and stuff on stage, so we don't want to be playing no games.
01:21Exactly. God needs to understand that we just needed to just go away for the entire show and then it can rain at the end.
01:30Oh, yeah. There we go.
01:32We're going to manifest that.
01:34But obviously, you two are legends in what you do, and I've always wanted to ask you guys this.
01:39What was the moment that you guys realized that you are legends if you do realize that you are?
01:44The moment you know you're a legend, I don't think that's a self-proclaimed thing.
01:52I think that the people anoint that.
01:54Right.
01:54Anoint that.
01:55That's true.
01:57I feel like one day somebody said it and they just never stopped saying it, but I don't like to be called a legend.
02:02I like to be called a living legend.
02:04Obviously. Obviously.
02:05I'm still doing this story. It ain't over yet. I got chapters to go.
02:11Exactly. Clearly, I mean, short yourself, like you just dropped something in April and Space, you just dropped something with Ice in January, so clearly y'all aren't stopping.
02:20Y'all about to be on the Function Tour. Like, you're clearly a living legend. Don't get me wrong.
02:25Oh, that's going to be incredible. That's going to be incredible.
02:29Living out this way.
02:31No, we're not going to give that up, child. It's too big.
02:34Exactly.
02:35You ever did that live band in a Detroit face?
02:38I don't think so, man. I have played with some live bands that were, like, at bars and stuff. I was just going to pick up the guitar and jam with them, but I ain't never just sat down and did no whole function with them. You know what I mean?
02:56Yeah, I have not done Detroit with the live bands. I've been doing this for a while now. You have, too, man. I want them to see that different show.
03:05When you got that bass player and that drummer, it's just different.
03:08Oh, yeah. It's like running, it's like coaching the football team, man. When you got your team out there, your team's strong, and you just kind of coaching the game, and they just jamming. It's like, wow. Never thought music could be so beautiful, man. Like, this is crazy.
03:25And it's going to sound even better with the live band because it's going to be in an amphitheater, too. So it's not like it's just boxed into an arena or anything. Like, the sound gets to carry.
03:34Oh, yeah. No, it's going to jam, man. You get a chance to see how these records were actually created in the studios. You know what I mean? Because we didn't use no whole lot of, we didn't do a lot of sampling, man.
03:46You know, Todd played the bass line on Freaky Tales, and yeah, Todd played that.
03:53Come on now, Detroit.
03:54And a whole bunch more. And a whole bunch more.
03:58Like what else?
04:00Like a lot of songs. I played on a lot of Too Short songs.
04:04Both of us, Scarface playing guitar all in his songs. He's singing those songs. Come on, man.
04:10We don't brag about it a lot, but we really are musicians. We really are in the studio working on our songs.
04:18Making the vibe. We creating the vibe, y'all.
04:21Right.
04:22Some rappers, you give them a beat, and they just start rapping. Not us. We be in there making the beat with everybody.
04:27I put their hands on every song.
04:29Exactly. And you can feel that, obviously, because there's layers and stacking and everything.
04:33So as you guys are talking about being very hands-on with your music and every process of it,
04:39what is your favorite part about making the music?
04:44My favorite part would be that moment.
04:49Sometimes you got to work at it, and sometimes it just happens naturally.
04:52But that moment when you're just sitting there and you're like, okay, now we got one.
04:57It's happening. I like this.
04:59And you're working from scratch.
05:01So when you're working from scratch and a song is 100% original, you don't know where it's going to go.
05:06And you just start hitting the keyboards and somebody do something and somebody else do something.
05:11And then you look up and go, oh, ish, we got one.
05:14Right.
05:15Yeah, and you know what, too, that'll make me different than a lot of artists?
05:20Like, I don't have throwaway songs.
05:23Right.
05:24You know what I mean?
05:25Like, every song that I have right now that I have can go on an album.
05:31They can go on an album right now from 10, 15 years ago.
05:34They can go on an album right now from 10, 15 years ago.
06:04Exactly.
06:06Y'all are real funky with all of the things that y'all do, like you just said.
06:10So with every project that you do, what is something that continuously, like, you try to theme throughout your music?
06:19Mine would be the funk, period.
06:21And a lot of player conversations, real.
06:27I can't say it on the radio.
06:29Like, it's just a lot of ish talking.
06:32Exactly.
06:32Very much player talk.
06:35I feel like Scarface is a poet, though, man.
06:37He's very poetic.
06:38Yes.
06:39Very deep thinker.
06:40Very conscious.
06:41You, like, when you, like, obviously for Scarface, like, you got to be, like, really introspective with everything and make sure that you really listen to every single word.
06:50Not saying that it's too short.
06:52You're not doing that.
06:52But I just feel like in these moments I have to, like, really sit and make sure that I'm really tapped in.
06:57Because I feel like I'm going to miss something if I don't.
07:00Speak on it, Brad.
07:01I don't write like Brad.
07:02I don't even try to.
07:02That boy is a writer.
07:04Talk about it, Brad.
07:05But I was sitting with a buddy of mine yesterday.
07:09And we were on the, we were getting ready to go hit some golf balls, man.
07:13And I forgot the subject that we were talking about.
07:16But he took it for face value, you know, rather than digging into it way deeper.
07:23And you know what it was?
07:27He was talking about, we were talking about the rain.
07:30It started raining, right?
07:32Mm-hmm.
07:32And I said, wow, man, I wonder what makes it rain.
07:37You know, because the rain comes from right here in the ball that we sit on.
07:41Like, we're sitting in the globe.
07:44We're sitting on earth.
07:45You know what I mean?
07:46And it's a whole universe outside of the earth.
07:48And no rain is falling from outside of this universe.
07:53It's only falling inside of the ball that we're sitting in, inside of.
07:59How's that come about?
08:00And he was like, damn, I never thought of it like that.
08:02I just thought there was a seat.
08:04I'm like, nah, man, it's bigger than that.
08:07It's like we're floating.
08:09Right, let's talk about it.
08:10We're floating on a freaking ball that's spinning in the middle of nowhere with water stuck to it.
08:16And people ain't, it's not really, it's not really snapping.
08:20You know, people ain't really grabbing that yet.
08:21Right, they're not really thinking about how crazy that really is.
08:25Yeah, like they think we sitting on the ground.
08:28And actually, we suspended in space, spinning in place.
08:31Exactly.
08:32They need to have that same thought process when they're listening to you.
08:35Like, it's not just taking it for face value.
08:39I don't know about that, but I, okay, it is what it is.
08:44I do be thinking about it, though.
08:50That's why he writes the songs the way he writes the songs.
08:52Exactly.
08:53Like, clearly what he's just trying to say right now, like, entering into his mind, I can clearly see why he writes, like, how he's written these songs, for sure.
09:02So, me, I just get a 10.
09:04I'm like, get in the car, bitch.
09:07And sometimes you need that, okay?
09:10That's my whole song.
09:11We did it.
09:12And I'll be like, let's just see some sights.
09:17I love the difference.
09:20I love it.
09:21And I'm going to be excited to see this all happen on stage, too.
09:25Let's just go and daydream.
09:28This is where our dream is going to start, right here, baby.
09:31I love it.
09:32Long story short, it's going to be an amazing show.
09:34You're going to have a lot of fun if you come to that show tomorrow.
09:36Oh, I definitely am.
09:37I'm right there front and center.
09:39I'm not missing this.
09:40And I know all my, you know I got all my family lives in Detroit, right?
09:44I heard.
09:44Because I'm new to the city, so I've been hearing some things.
09:48All of them.
09:48All of them.
09:50So.
09:52I get a chance to come home.
09:53Not, well, home.
09:54Kind of home.
09:55Like, that's home for me, too.
09:56Detroit is like home because all my family live out there.
09:59So it's low-key like homecoming.
10:02Nah, kind of.
10:03Just go see my people.
10:04Family reunion.
10:05Exactly.
10:06A family reunion.
10:06So we really need to turn up for you, for sure.
10:10Man, I'm tired.
10:11Don't get hit by no train.
10:12Please.
10:12Please.
10:14Nah, I'm not doing that, man.
10:16I'm just, I'm in motion right now.
10:19I understand.
10:20You're in motion.
10:21I switch cars like three times a day, man.
10:23I'm about to switch wits.
10:25I know.
10:25That's right.
10:25Come on now.
10:28I'm pulling it.
10:29You got it.
10:29You got it right now.
10:30Hey, you got it, Kug.
10:31I got it.
10:33I got a 68 GTO, Pontiac.
10:36Woo!
10:39I know that's right.
10:40Come on now.
10:42And I got a 2025 Mercedes and put the top down, man.
10:47Man, I wish I could.
10:48It's raining out here.
10:50I'm getting in a good mood for Detroit.
10:52I appreciate it.
10:53We need all the good top-down vibes.
10:55Hey, man.
10:57Let me tell you something about Todd's set, though, right?
11:00I mean, she's too short set.
11:03Give us the secrets.
11:05We learned way back, like, in the beginning of our career, my career, not to go behind
11:11too short, right?
11:12Why not?
11:13He is going to kill you.
11:17How so?
11:18Because of his energy or...
11:19I don't care who it is.
11:21Don't go out there playing with Todd, man.
11:23So when you hear him plug in with the band...
11:28A lot of songs.
11:30What's your favorite one to perform every night?
11:35My favorite...
11:37Mm-hmm.
11:38What's your favorite to perform?
11:40He don't care about that.
11:41But my favorite is when that boy come out there.
11:46When that boy jammed the ghetto.
11:49Woo!
11:51Hey, man.
11:53When that boy jammed life with you.
11:56Woo!
11:56Woo!
11:57Woo!
11:57Woo!
11:58Oh, I'm ready.
11:59You crazy, man.
12:00Oh, wee, man.
12:02Okay.
12:02And then, Short, what's your favorite to see Space do on stage?
12:08Mind playing tricks, homie?
12:10Ooh!
12:11But it's crazy, because half the show, I keep walking by, and I'm like, mind playing tricks
12:19on me.
12:19And then he won't do it.
12:21And then he's like, the show's almost over.
12:24I'm like, mind playing tricks on me.
12:25Play it.
12:27And he still won't do it.
12:28And then he just...
12:29But he's going to do it.
12:30But he's going to do it when he wants to do it.
12:33Hey.
12:33But I kind of remind him, do not leave the stage without playing mind playing tricks
12:36on me.
12:39And then I tell a story about how mind playing tricks came about.
12:42I think...
12:44I think that's pretty cool, too.
12:46Don't tell the story now.
12:46Stay for the ball.
12:46Right.
12:47You got to stay before the...
12:48You got to stay before the people.
12:49I guess I could do the story right now, but I ain't going to do it.
12:58Hey, man.
12:58If you got to bring an umbrella, bring it, because the show ain't going to stop, man.
13:05So, you know.
13:06Oh, it's going down, y'all.
13:08If I'm going to stay, then it's raining, and your lady start getting wet, it could be
13:12a problem.
13:15Wow.
13:16Yeah.
13:16It's okay.
13:17They're going to have ponchos.
13:18They're going to be real fine living their best lives in the rain.
13:21It'll be fine.
13:23Pull up on me.
13:24Let's go.
13:25Y'all breaking out them lookalikes with the dress and the suit matching all that?
13:31The couple's going to be matching this shit tomorrow?
13:33They might.
13:34Oh, yeah.
13:34You know how to be, do it.
13:37Exactly.
13:38We pull up as a fashion show, okay?
13:40Somebody bring me a Detroit vs. Everybody t-shirt, too.
13:45Public service announcement.
13:46Bring face a Detroit vs. Everybody shirt, please and thank you.
13:50Don't make him wait.
13:50And then throw me a Detroit Tigers hat in there, too.
13:54The orange one.
13:56Put it in there.
13:57It need to be in his dressing room ASAP.
14:00Yeah, I don't mean...
14:00So, final question I got for you.
14:05Kind of already encompassed it all, but for anyone who's really just sitting, trying not
14:10to put their finger on that Ticketmaster link, trying to think, oh, maybe I shouldn't.
14:15Why should they be there on Friday night at the function?
14:21Because if you don't go, everybody's going to tell you about it.
14:24That's true.
14:25They're going to tell you all about what you missed.
14:27You're like, man, I was thinking about going.
14:28Man, I should have went, man.
14:30Man, I should have went to that, man.
14:33Yeah, no.
14:34It's all live, man.
14:35Ain't nobody rapping to it.
14:36Just a beat.
14:37Like, we're actually creating music on stage.
14:40I know.
14:40That's right.
14:40It's definitely a sight to see.
14:42Well, luckily, I will not be having FOMO.
14:44And luckily, a lot of our listeners are super excited because they want tickets.
14:48So, we're going to be out there, rain or shine, and hopefully it's going to be shine.
14:51Okay?
14:53Yeah, I look forward to it.
14:54I'm about to drop this convertible top and bring the sunshine to Detroit.
14:59It's coming.
14:59I know.
14:59That's right.
15:00I got a good one.
15:01Sunshine.
15:02Convertible tops.
15:03You call them rags.
15:04We call them drops.
15:06We call them drops.
15:06You ride white walls.
15:07We ride bogues.
15:09You got a girlfriend.
15:11We, you know the rest.
15:13We pimp.
15:15Yeah.
15:16I'm a too short fan for real, y'all.
15:18I see.
15:19I'm even more excited to see this tomorrow because the energy between you two is really like bros.
15:24For real.
15:25That boy fired up that dragon.
15:26That boy got that dragon in there.
15:28Right.
15:29He flexed on us.
15:31I don't know what I fucking do.
15:31That's B12, man.
15:34Yeah, man.
15:34Go on.
15:35Go on.
15:35Hit that, man.
15:36That's B12, man.
15:37And I'll see y'all.
15:38I'll see you tomorrow when I get in.
15:39Well, I'll get in tonight, but I'll see y'all tomorrow.
15:41Bye.
15:42Bye.

15:43Bye.
