00:00Welcome into today's Patriots training camp practice report.
00:03Alex Barth, Scott Zolak with you after the Patriots wrapped up training camp practice seven on a Zolak called it a hot fucking day out here at Stadium.
00:10But a lot of fucking balls, man.
00:13A lot of good stuff to get to here.
00:15Thanks, everybody, for tuning in.
00:17Let's start with Will Campbell.
00:18Let's get right to it.
00:19Let's start with Will Campbell.
00:21After the first two days, solid, kind of looked like on track, what you'd expect.
00:26Step back today.
00:27And really, it was one period.
00:29He had one win, one loss in the one-on-ones.
00:31He beat Keyon White, and then he lost.
00:34I don't remember who it was that he lost to.
00:36But then he comes out, first 11-on-11 period, twice in four plays.
00:40Caleb on Chase on.
00:41Yeah, Chase on.
00:41Chase on was the one in the 11-11s who beat him for a sack.
00:43I'll pull up the one-on-one in a second.
00:45But beat him twice for a sack, got another pressure.
00:47I thought he handled himself okay after that.
00:50It was really just that one window.
00:52But kind of similar to that first day of OTAs when Drake May threw four picks.
00:56It was four picks in the first six passes, and he was fine after that.
00:59But two sacks in a four-play span from the guy you're expecting to be your cornerstone left tackle, not good.
01:05And especially on a day where they're working on those more traditional pass sets and not just running the baller play action.
01:10Yeah, we had two first-round draft picks my rookie year.
01:12It was Pat Harlow and Leonard Russell.
01:14Leonard Russell was a running back from Arizona State.
01:16Pat Harlow, top-ten pick from USC.
01:19Plug-and-play left tackle.
01:20That dude was yoked.
01:22He was 6'6", and he was all of it.
01:24And he had great extension, and he was a plug-and-play guy from day one.
01:28So we were ready to go with him.
01:31This guy's going to need some help a little bit, I think, at the beginning.
01:33And this is the time right now to really find out what he can do and what he can't do.
01:37So get him out there one-on-ones.
01:39Take a look at some of the bodies.
01:41It was Braden Swinson that beat him, by the way.
01:42Right.
01:42And if it's a quicker athletic guy, you might have to slide and get him some help.
01:46If it's a bigger guy, he's going to be able to probably get in front of him, get the feet set.
01:50And I think when he does get his feet set, like when he did get beat Keon White, it's because he has good body leverage.
01:55Yeah.
01:56You know?
01:56You get all fucked up in your stance.
01:58Then all of a sudden, like, you've got a guy like Christian Ellis who we talked to today.
02:01He pulled on a run around the left fucking side, and he got up underneath it and put him right on his ass.
02:07Now, Christian Ellis gets up, helps him up.
02:11He said, yeah, I got him on that play.
02:12But he said, he's going to be good.
02:13You know?
02:14There's going to be plays where he gets me a lot of the time.
02:16But, you know, those one, you can't have two or three in one drill.
02:20No.
02:21No.
02:22And it was.
02:23I mean, all eyes are on him, too, now.
02:25So everybody's watching it.
02:26To your point about, you know, what's giving him trouble, what's beating him, it was that same move from Chase.
02:33Not the exact same move, but a similar concept where fake outside, go inside.
02:37And that's what gave Campbell the most trouble in college, and that's what got him there.
02:40So it's something we knew he needed to work on.
02:43It was probably one of his biggest areas of improvement coming out of the draft.
02:45Obviously, you know, not a perfect prospect.
02:47Nobody is.
02:48But you see that get exposed there right away, and it's something he's going to have to continue to figure out how to get there.
02:52Oh, you're going to be facing number 98.
02:54You're going to be facing Max Crosby, who's going to be wound up like a bat out of fucking hell coming off that edge.
03:00And he's got three stunner moves that will spin and get into it.
03:03You know, he's one of the best at doing it, and he's perfected it.
03:06And so whatever he's facing now is going to be five times that, week one against the Raiders.
03:11So big picture, how worried are you about Campbell?
03:13Not worried yet, because it's week one.
03:14And I think this is the time you're going to make your mistakes.
03:16I think I'd say throw everything at him.
03:18This is where Josh is going to look at it, along with Marone.
03:20You've got two former head coaches on your offensive staff.
03:24They're not going to leave him blind out there.
03:26They're not going to leave him out there on an island.
03:28They're going to cover him with a tight end.
03:29They'll motion to him.
03:30They'll bring the fullback in if they have to.
03:32They'll slide to him.
03:34Cole Strange is going to have to play good next to him.
03:35That's another thing.
03:37And Strange has been pretty solid here through camp.
03:39I will say, though, today it was Jared Wilson.
03:41Like Cole Strange back with the twos at center.
03:43Garrett Bradbury's out.
03:44It's Ben Brown up at center.
03:47We'll talk about Campbell again.
03:48It was on and off.
03:49Jared Wilson has been unbelievable.
03:51Caden Wallace, we even have the players now getting in on the whole swearing thing we're doing.
03:55Caden Wallace, after practice, asked about rookie Jared Wilson and said,
03:58he's really fucking good.
04:00And he has been out here.
04:01The one issue we talked about has been the snaps.
04:03But when he's at left guard, that's obviously not a problem.
04:05And another day today where he looked excellent.
04:07I think he's the starting left guard right now.
04:09And that means two rookies on the left side.
04:11And I think he's the starting left guard.
04:12That's a hell of a find for them.
04:14Because it's like finding a guy like David Andrews as a drafted free agent, man.
04:17And that dude becomes a starter and a Patriot Hall of Famer forever for you.
04:20But it would have been interesting, though, to see if they would have let Andrews sort of play his way back to the end of this.
04:26See if he can rehab and see if he can give you another year and then sort of turn it over to him.
04:31One more thing on the Will Campbell stuff.
04:33So it was Caleb on chase on that beat him twice in 11s.
04:36He has, I think, seven sacks now in the last three days since the pass came on.
04:40Like, do we chalk any of this up to, hey, let's remember, this guy was a first-round pick.
04:44And he's far from lived up to it.
04:46He had a career-high five sacks last year, four of those were in the back half.
04:49It's kind of all building off the second half of last season, the last season.
04:53We've seen that here.
04:53Remember, Joshua Uche had that great end to, I think, was the 2022 season.
04:57There was all that hype off of that that never materialized.
05:00But do you put any stock into, this is a coaching staff that has a ton of success working with guys in the front seven, especially pass rushers.
05:06Do you put any stock in who, hey, maybe they found something here.
05:10Maybe it's going to play.
05:11Maybe.
05:11And the reason I say that is because we had Milt Williams on today.
05:15And he talked about, like, they're just turning him loose.
05:17Like, go, bat out of hell.
05:19I'm not supposed to read, sit, and react and do that.
05:22He said none of us are doing that on defense.
05:24So if that's the case, it's like point and go.
05:26And we're bringing bat out of hell edge pressure.
05:29You're putting the pressure.
05:30You're taking the onus.
05:32You're putting the onus on the offense.
05:33Yeah.
05:33To, like, we're going to take the first step instead of us reacting to what you do.
05:36You're going to have to fucking react to what we do.
05:39So if you're coming out like a bat out of hell, you're going to have to address that.
05:41And you're going to have a quarterback shaking his pants back here.
05:44Last thing I want as a quarterback is I know this guy hit me.
05:47Now this guy's over here yelling.
05:48Now they're starting to move around.
05:50Be active up front.
05:51They preach violence.
05:52They preach speed.
05:53And if that's the case, a guy like Chase on here, like this former first-round pick, he could start coming on now.
05:59Some guys just develop later.
06:00And maybe it didn't work out somewhere else.
06:02He was drafted at 20 years old.
06:04So he's still only 26.
06:05He's a young guy.
06:05I also like, this is just kind of a dumb football guy thing.
06:09He does the four-point stance.
06:10Yeah.
06:10You see him down there.
06:11He's really fucking charged up.
06:13It's like he's getting set to block a punt.
06:15Yeah.
06:15Like that's, that's, that's like, he's kind of got that stance.
06:17Yeah.
06:18So that's the offensive line.
06:20The, if you want a silver lining on it, although the, and it wasn't just Campbell, Demontra Jacobs got beat a couple times.
06:25They had a false start.
06:27And even though the offensive line struggled, Drake May was good.
06:30Drake May was really good.
06:31And he was moving in the pocket.
06:32He was handling pressure.
06:34He was resetting himself.
06:35He had a bomb downfield to Kyle Williams for a touchdown throw of the day.
06:38Yeah.
06:38And it wasn't, we don't have to sit here and say, Drake May had a rough start and bounced back.
06:43Because we've had to do that so much.
06:44We just get to say, hey, Drake May was good today.
06:47Sadly, I don't, I don't want him to feel comfortable when all hell's breaking loose.
06:50Like that shouldn't be the norm, you know, to where I want, I want to break down under pressure.
06:54That's where the athleticism comes in.
06:56But you see when they had that perfect pocket around him, he's able to get back one, two, three, four, five, set his feet, replant.
07:03And that's when he hit Kyle Williams on that, on that wheel route down at right sideline for what a 43 yard touchdown, wide ass open, dropped him right in the bucket.
07:11It was a hell of a fucking throw, but I don't want the quarterback to be looking to run and looking to move, but that's the natural athletic ability.
07:18And Bob was talking like the ball just looks smooth coming out of his arm.
07:23Like it's, there's no hitch.
07:24There's no glitch.
07:25It's like one, two, three.
07:26And Josh has got him seeing his run.
07:27He looks very comfortable.
07:29No turnovers yet.
07:29He looks very comfortable.
07:30And I, to your point, like he said earlier in camp, he wants to be better at remaining a thrower while he's scrambling and not just scramble a run.
07:38So today when the heat gets turned off and there is pressure, he had chances to scramble today.
07:42He certainly did.
07:43And it wouldn't have necessarily been a wrong decision, but it was a better decision to extend the play, look downfield and throw.
07:48When he did that, he hit Stephon Diggs on a crosser on a third down.
07:51They were doing down and distance today for the first time.
07:53That was on a little bit of a broken play.
07:55The touchdown of Kyle Williams wasn't a broken play, but it was resetting in the pocket.
07:59So if you want a silver lining for the offense, I don't want to say the offensive line looked like shit today, but it was their worst day of the three days in pads.
08:05If you want a silver lining to it, Drake May handled it well, which you said before we came on the air.
08:09There's going to be times this year where he has to do that.
08:11Yeah.
08:12Because the offensive line being better.
08:14It should be part of the game plan is my overall.
08:15It shouldn't be the offensive line being better from where they were last year.
08:18It doesn't mean they're going to be great.
08:19That's what Josh could have to sit up, coach him.
08:20Like, hey, ideally, we want you here in this spot, but I like what you did here.
08:23You're going to have to slide at that.
08:25And they got to clean that shit up front.
08:27They do.
08:27They got to they got to bolster that.
08:28They got to find five and roll with it.
08:30It's good to have Morgan Moses back out there today.
08:32But like you start to wonder, you guys, what, 37 years old?
08:35Yeah, he's been around.
08:37Thirty five, I think.
08:38Thirty five.
08:38Yeah, it's been around the block a little bit.
08:39I just wonder, like days like this, do they drag on him?
08:42You know, they're doing some maintenance days.
08:44Harold Landry had a maintenance day today.
08:45Carlton Davis has been in and out.
08:46So they're they're on top.
08:47I don't know.
08:48They're clearly aware of that.
08:49So they were in the shorts, but they had the uppers on today.
08:51So you're still able to get a good thud, even though it wasn't a lot of padded practice.
08:55So the Friday night thing is going to be a pretty full go thing.
08:59You think so?
08:59That's what I'm hearing.
09:00Because like some of the some of the beat guys are saying that, hey, we were able to take it off at night because it was basically a glorified walkthrough.
09:06Bill would do those glorified walkthroughs.
09:08I think Mayo had it last year, too.
09:09And I guess.
09:10So does today count as a padded practice or no?
09:13No, it doesn't.
09:13Because even though they're in the shoulder pads, shorts, shorts on.
09:16So the upper pads don't count because those are full shoulder pads.
09:19Guys had backplates and everything.
09:20Interesting.
09:21Because you can't do if you do three padded practices in a row, you have to take three days out of pads.
09:25But I guess we'll find out tomorrow.
09:26We talked about Caleb on chase on anything on the defense.
09:29Um, corners is going to be getting the reps, man.
09:32You know, with these guys being out and DJ James still looks good.
09:35Yeah.
09:3530.
09:35Yep.
09:36Spillane.
09:36I still want to see Spillane in like a game.
09:38Like, yeah.
09:39Everybody can ask me, how's Spillane?
09:40I really don't know yet.
09:41You know, I need to see him out there.
09:43Continue to see first through third down.
09:44See how he reacts.
09:45Right.
09:45Yeah.
09:46Yeah.
09:46So we'll be back tomorrow.
09:47It'll be the last practice of the block.
09:49It's supposed to be a walkthrough practice tomorrow like they had last week according to ESPN's Mike Reese.
09:54So maybe a little.
09:55The fuck's he know, though?
09:56Little fucker.
09:57He knows a couple things.
09:57Yeah.
09:58Maybe we'll do a little recap of the whole week.
10:00Something like that.
10:01Sounds good, boy.
10:01We'll talk about that.
10:02Until then, 985thesportshub.com.
10:04Matt Dolph and myself have more on today's practice.
