Concluding the Patriots fifth training camp practice, Alex Barth and Scott Zolak recapped the performance of the team. While discussing rookie Will Campbell's performance in the team's first padded practice, Barth explained how the former LSU Tiger lost his rep in 1 vs. 1's, but very much help his own in the team drills.
Transcript
00:00Welcome in to today's Patriots training camp practice report brought to you by Safety Insurance.
00:04Alex Barth, Scott Zolak, after the Patriots wrapped up their fifth training camp practice, first in full pads.
00:09The heat came forward. It's only getting hotter this week.
00:11It's so fucking hot today.
00:12So don't start folding yet. It's only going to get hotter.
00:16Shit, I remember those days of camp, we're down at Bryant, and the two-a-days, we had real two-a-days,
00:20and they had the thick champion t-shirts on, they were just soaked, and the pads got soaked.
00:24And the worst thing was, you know, they didn't dry them out.
00:27The bullshit problem was, we had the second practice, and we had to go out and put the heavy, stinky, smelly pads on,
00:33and the helmet, it was just awful.
00:35But, hey, they get taken care of a lot better now. Camp Cushy.
00:38No more two-a-days here.
00:40They did have a two-hour practice. This was probably their longest practice of the summer today.
00:44We'll start with Will Campbell. I think that's where everybody wants us to start, right?
00:48Had a rough start. Keon White put him on skates in a one-on-one, walked him right back.
00:53That was his only one-on-one, but then they come into 11s, and it was mostly run game today.
00:57The few passes they did was play action off of that run stuff.
01:01Will Campbell looked really good, really, really good in the run game.
01:05Did also show up in pass pro on that play action.
01:08He stood up Keon White once. He stood up Caleb on chase on once, who we'll get to.
01:11Folded Milton Williams in twice, setting the edge on that left side when they were trying to run outside of him.
01:17The one-on-one happened, but overall, I would say a good first day for Will Campbell.
01:21And if it's going to be a jump year for Keon White, I got high hopes for him.
01:24He should have some days against Will Campbell where he looks good and wins those one-on-ones.
01:29He gets paid, too. He's a good player, too.
01:31That's going to get Will Campbell ready to play, is what that's going to do.
01:34I saw a couple of them from up here, and he was good in the run game coming off the ball.
01:38That's sort of his forte, man.
01:39You look at the squatting records he had down at LSU, squatting over 600 pounds doing that.
01:44That's leg power, man.
01:45That's not about arm strength or arm length.
01:48And as long as he has good feet, good positioning, his arms are going to be fine.
01:51What did you think of the offensive line as a whole today?
01:53It looked okay. Not a lot of jump in the gun.
01:56There weren't a lot of penalties.
01:57I thought they looked pretty crisp for day number one.
02:00There were holes for the backs to actually run through.
02:02He didn't have holes a year ago.
02:04Well, it's funny.
02:05The last couple of years, the first day of pads, the takeaway is what are they going to do, right?
02:10We've done this last two or three years.
02:12And today was, I mean, I would say the offense slightly won the day.
02:16It was a healthy back and forth.
02:17First team offense won.
02:18Second team was the defense, and we can get to that.
02:20But the offense won that left side, dominated Will Campbell.
02:23Jared Wilson, when he was over there, had some good blocks.
02:25He did have another botched snap with Drake May.
02:28So that's worth noting, because as they try to figure out where they're going to put him at center and left guard,
02:33some of that is who do you want to take out of the lineup?
02:35Is it Garrett Bradbury?
02:36Is it Cole Strange?
02:37But also, if he can't get the ball back to the quarterback, he can't play center.
02:40If he can't snap the ball, he can't play center.
02:43That'll eliminate Red.
02:44They won't put up with that.
02:45They'll move on quickly if this continues.
02:47He needs to have some clean, clean periods with that, or else he'll never play center again here.
02:51But it's something to keep an eye on.
02:53The running backs.
02:54You saw more Travion Harrison today.
02:55That speed is real.
02:58That speed is real.
02:59And how can that, you know, this is an offense that's lacked speed the last couple years.
03:03They've had Pop Douglas.
03:04That's kind of it.
03:05You add Kyle Williams, who's still been quiet, but he's out there.
03:07You add Travion Henderson.
03:09How can that speed impact things offensively?
03:11Well, I think it's getting these guys out in space, right?
03:12And that's where Josh is going to have to use that as a game of chess to say, I want to get him on a backer.
03:17I want to get him on a strong safety, meaning Henderson.
03:19Because the one-on-ones down here, strong safety is going to cover him.
03:21He's shaking, moving left and right.
03:23And just create no-look routes where he bangs it one way and he basically breaks the ankles of the coverage guy.
03:29That's James White type stuff.
03:30That's how White used to run his routes.
03:32Those little option routes, those shake and bake routes.
03:34So it's going to be up to Josh to get him in space.
03:37You know, Ramondre is more of your downhill runner.
03:39He's between the tackles.
03:40He's having a good camp so far.
03:42But they're going to have a good one-two punch here.
03:44I like the fact they're going to have the ability to switch it to a third down back when they need to.
03:48The other notable thing from the offense today, Jalen Polk back.
03:52Jalen Polk was on the field, looked like a full participant.
03:55Last one on the field.
03:56Last one to get out on the field.
03:58He was out there, caught a touchdown.
03:59He got in a little scrap with Craig Woodson, just kind of blocking, was playing to the whistle.
04:04I don't know.
04:04I felt, look, he's still got a ways to go.
04:06But I felt like I saw the urgency you'd want to see from a guy in that situation.
04:09He's probably starting to feel the heat too, right?
04:11He's hearing it.
04:12You know, people are talking about it.
04:13Can't make the club in a tub.
04:15And he can't afford to miss days.
04:17If you already miss three, team moves on.
04:19Right.
04:21Roster spots move on.
04:23Kayshawn Booty keeps coming out here, making plays, practice after practice.
04:26He had a nice catch in a one-on-ones.
04:27A couple touchdowns, beat Gonzalez in a one-on-one, yeah, down underneath.
04:30So the more Booty catches the ball and is more available, like, that's bad for Polk.
04:35You worried at all about Gonzalez?
04:37Always worried about, you know, hammies because those hammies don't go away.
04:41You know, the problem is, do you rush it back?
04:43And if it's not a full tear or if it's something slight, I think it's something slight because he walked over.
04:47Yeah, he walked off.
04:48He lived, but he walked.
04:49If he tore his hammy, like, you're carting the guy off.
04:51Right.
04:51You know?
04:52So I take it as a slight thing.
04:54And practice was halfway over.
04:55Yeah.
04:55So no use having him go out there and stand.
04:57He did the right thing.
04:58And he took him to the locker room.
04:59Yeah, let him ice up.
05:00If he needs it, that's a guy that if he misses a day or two, you're not worried about.
05:04Right?
05:04That's a guy that his game is his game.
05:06Yeah, he might miss a day more than a day or two.
05:08Right.
05:08But I would rather they not rush him back out at this point.
05:11You know, I don't need to see him in the summer.
05:13Same until joint next week.
05:15Yeah.
05:15Yeah, absolutely.
05:17Also, so we talked about the offensive line.
05:18Like, how do you separate in this setting?
05:21Well, did the offensive line have a good day or did the defensive line have a bad day?
05:24Because I mentioned before, when they're running off that left side and a lot of what Will Campbell and Jared Wilson did was against Milton Williams,
05:31who's a guy who wasn't bad against the run in Philly, just didn't really play the run in Philly.
05:36He's a rotational player, never played more than 48% of the snaps in a season, only was used as a pass rusher.
05:41He's going to play more here.
05:42He got paid more.
05:43He's going to play more here.
05:44He's going to play the run.
05:45Like, how much do you look at today of great, Will Campbell looked good, he looks like he belongs,
05:50versus, well, here's this guy, Milton Williams, we're testing him in a new role, and it didn't look great early.
05:56One thing, they're going to know that inside, right?
05:57Because they're going to know if the plays were scripted or not.
05:59And when you see the practice schedule and you're servicing the offense, they have the plays listed for you,
06:05so you can pretty much remember the plays in your head defensively if you want to jump the gun
06:08or if you want to help them make it look good.
06:10So we don't know that.
06:11They're the only ones that know that.
06:12But I think you're really going to tell more tomorrow when you're going to put the ball downfield a little bit,
06:17have some blitz periods.
06:18That's why I want to watch Will Campbell.
06:20That's why I want to watch communication up front.
06:22Regardless who's at center, cross the board.
06:24You've got to find five guys that have continuity and roll with those guys.
06:27Talked to Hunter Henry today.
06:28He's really good.
06:30That's a pro that understands it.
06:32He gets it.
06:32He's excited about the offense.
06:34And Josh, same thing with Pop.
06:35We had Pop Douglas and Hunter Henry for our two interviews.
06:38Thought those guys were great today.
06:39No, you made a good point about Campbell with, like, when they get in the true pass sets, right?
06:43When you're blocking a pocket and it's not play action, it's not roll out.
06:46Frayble talked about it.
06:47Inside out.
06:47Inside out.
06:48That's going to be the next key for him.
06:49By the way, I will take one or two questions for Zoe in the YouTube channel if people want.
06:53But while people put questions in, anybody else stand out to you defensively?
06:56I thought rookie Joshua Farmer had a nice run stop.
06:59He's number 30 defensive back.
07:00He's starting to get more reps.
07:01DJ James, second-year corner.
07:02DJ James.
07:02And I've been slapping his head saying, keep making plays, number 30.
07:05Keep making plays.
07:06Knocked the ball down again today in coverage.
07:08So something to keep an eye on.
07:09He might play a lot in his preseason game.
07:11Well, there's going to be an opportunity there.
07:12Because if Gonzalez is going to miss time, Carlton Davis has been in and out.
07:15He was out again today.
07:16Alex Austin's clearly that next guy up on the boundary.
07:19But after him, we saw more of Marcella's style today.
07:22DJ James got some run.
07:23And I'd like to see Isaiah Bolden get some work there.
07:26That's a guy that they've had for a couple years.
07:27Yeah.
07:27He's gotten a ton of looks there.
07:28It's not good if he's not repping, right.
07:30He can also return kicks.
07:31So it's like, let's see, can he do the depth thing and return kicks in that?
07:34It's fucking hot, Barth.
07:35You've got to get to these questions, man.
07:36All right, real quick.
07:37What did you think of the run game between the tackles?
07:39I thought it was good.
07:40I thought it was really good.
07:41Because these guys were up to the backers.
07:43And what I like is it's like the old Ivan Fierce theory of, hey, we run the ball.
07:47We score every time.
07:48And so the second these guys are getting touched, they're not stopping.
07:51They're running through contact, running through arms, getting to the goal line.
07:54And the whole offense falls them down.
07:55I like that.
07:55Get guys in shape.
07:56How early should people be here tomorrow to make sure they get a seat on the bleachers?
08:00Bleachers?
08:01I'd say 930.
08:03930's good.
08:03I feel like the hill was filling up before the bleachers today.
08:06I went down and I did the thing with Sarge today before practice.
08:09How is Sarge?
08:10Sarge is good.
08:11He's good.
08:11He's filling it, huh?
08:12What's up?
08:13He's filling it.
08:14I hear the big announcements.
08:15Oh, no.
08:15He was in his bag today.
08:16Oh, boy.
08:17He was in his bag.
08:18So as you guys are tuning in, thank you very much.
08:21Does he have that area down there, Sarge's Corner, or whatever the hell that is that was?
08:24What do you mean?
08:25He sits down, talks to a player.
08:26There's a sectioned off area.
08:27I don't think so.
08:28I thought you meant, like, remember how there was Brady's Corner in the stadium?
08:31Yeah.
08:31Are there fans at training camp that have a Sarge's Corner?
08:32There's a little sign.
08:33Jim, there used to be a sign for Sarge's yard.
08:38I don't remember that.
08:39I didn't see it.
08:40That's a dumb thing anyway.
08:42Anyway, we'll have another one of these recaps tomorrow.
08:44If you missed any of the previous ones, Sports Hub YouTube page or Patriots Hub podcast,
08:48wherever you get your podcasts.
08:50Again, how'd you do with Lazar on Saturday?
08:52You guys got a lot of hits on that, huh?
08:53Patriots Training and Practice Report brought to you by Safety Insurance.
08:54It blew up.
08:55Blew up?
08:55It always does.
08:56We had a good one.
08:56Good one to talk about.
08:57A lot to talk about.
08:58Well, these have been blowing up, too.
08:59These have been doing good numbers.
09:00Good.
09:00Yeah, because you're promoting them on the show, and people love to hear us.
09:03I fucking swear.
09:04There you go.
09:04That adds it up as well.
09:05Fucking right.
