00:00All right, on the phone right now is a man who was a former college athlete.
00:03He is an amazing songwriter.
00:05He is a father of two.
00:07He vacations with Gronk, for crying out loud.
00:09This guy is the man.
00:11Ladies and gentlemen, on the phone, Samuel Hunt.
00:13Sam Hunt!
00:15What's happening?
00:16Not too much, dude.
00:17Thanks for calling in.
00:18We appreciate you.
00:19Yeah, good to chat with you guys this morning.
00:21Absolutely.
00:22Well, Outskirts is the single right now.
00:24We absolutely love this song.
00:25We're playing the heck out of it.
00:26Kind of give me the genesis of this song
00:29and kind of where your head was at when you wrote it.
00:31Yeah, this is a song that came about a few years ago.
00:34Usually the songs that I put out will have been written about two or three years prior to me putting them out.
00:39But several years ago, when I started touring as much as I did,
00:42I started writing songs on these little retreats with a couple of my guys that I've been writing with from the very beginning.
00:48And we went out on a retreat.
00:50I can't remember.
00:50We may have just been outside of Nashville somewhere in a little cabin.
00:53But anyway, I had that title in my phone, and we sat down to write one day,
00:57and it kind of just fell out.
00:59Some songs take a little longer than others.
01:00That one kind of came out quickly.
01:02Although I was missing the second verse.
01:04I didn't write that second verse until about two months before I put it out.
01:07So it was kind of in the can waiting for me to finish,
01:11and I finished it just about two months before I released it.
01:13That's awesome.
01:14What's one of your songs that did not come easy and was hard to finish for you?
01:19Let's see.
01:20Well, I have a reputation for being slow when it comes to writing.
01:25The typical Nashville way is to go in from like 10 to 4,
01:30and a lot of guys will write one or either two songs a day.
01:33But it usually takes me two or three sits to finish this song.
01:37But I guess maybe I remember thinking long and hard about Break Up in a Small Town.
01:43It was a song on my first record.
01:44Yeah, man.
01:45There's a lot going on in that song.
01:47Yeah, I kind of crammed a bunch of lyrics in there.
01:51Yeah.
01:52That was one that I took my time on.
01:54I appreciate it.
01:55So you were talking about taking a long time with songs.
01:58It's been about two years since you've released an album.
02:00Do we have anything on the horizon?
02:03So I decided a couple years ago, once I had my first baby,
02:07that I knew I'd be pretty busy, so I was going to put out.
02:11And I already have trouble getting out new music.
02:13And if you look back at my career, you know, I'm not on the same.
02:18Well, you're slow.
02:19You can't write a song fast.
02:20It takes you forever.
02:21We've already established that.
02:24So I had about 10 or 12 songs.
02:27And instead of trying to get them all recorded at once,
02:31I've just been putting them out one at a time.
02:32So I haven't put out an album in a couple years,
02:34but I thought, well, I'll just put out about 10 songs over a two-year period.
02:39So I'm about three or four shy of that.
02:41So those songs are coming out in the first week of April.
02:45So I have three new ones coming out in addition to it.
02:48They'll be put together with Outskirts, which has been out for a while.
02:51Yeah, the way he puts out songs, it's going to be a greatest hits album,
02:54is what it's going to be.
02:57That's fine.
02:58Very cool, Sam.
02:59You know, you were talking about it earlier,
03:01Outskirts being a song that you had two, three years ago.
03:04Is it hard for you to come back to those songs and say,
03:06okay, you know what, we've had this one in the can for a little bit,
03:08or we had this one ready to go for a little bit.
03:11Is it hard to kind of reconnect with those songs?
03:13Yeah, sometimes.
03:14You know, the place you were in when you wrote it,
03:17you think as time passes, you know,
03:19you don't necessarily connect to it as much.
03:22Maybe some of the new has worn off.
03:24But like I said, I can't be as slow as I am with my writing.
03:27I can't afford to just be putting songs on the back burner.
03:30But that one was one that I still felt good about.
03:34And it still, more than importantly,
03:36it still matched with the other several songs that I was going to put out.
03:40In other words, it sounded like it was a part of an album with those other songs.
03:43Well, and then Haley's been sitting in Toronto trying to figure out what the hell's going on, too.
03:47Crystal Haley!
03:51Yeah, no doubt.
03:52All right, Sam, we want to play a quick game with you.
03:54We've played this with you before.
03:55It just lets us get to know you very well.
03:57It's called Sam I Am or Sam I'm Not.
03:59So I'll just read a statement.
04:00You tell me if this is you or not you, okay?
04:03All right.
04:04All right.
04:05Binge watcher of Netflix.
04:07I've done it before.
04:08I did, what was the one with, in Missouri about the...
04:14Ozark.
04:15It's Ozark.
04:16Ozark.
04:17Ozark, yeah.
04:19Sounds like it made a big impression on you, Sam.
04:21The one in Missouri.
04:23All right, here we go.
04:24A better hunter than Jordan Davis.
04:27Oh, man.
04:29Uh, Sam I'm maybe.
04:31Sam I'm maybe.
04:34Uh, expert diaper changer.
04:37Sam I am.
04:38Sam I am.
04:39Very nice.
04:39There you go.
04:40Better songwriter when you're alone.
04:43Hmm.
04:45Ah.
04:46And this is no diss to your boys.
04:49It's just how you do it.
04:51Sam I am.
04:52Sam I am.
04:53I'm going to make it a little clearer.
04:54All right.
04:54Your boys are not going to be happy about that one.
04:57And, uh...
04:58That doesn't mean they're not better, but I am better alone.
05:01Okay.
05:01Very nice.
05:02And, uh, pre-show shot guy.
05:05No.
05:07No?
05:07Sam I'm not.
05:08Yeah, so, uh, I prefer a beer.
