00:00Howdy folks! You like blood, violence, freaks of nature?
00:04Well then, come down to Captain Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Mad Men.
00:09Here's a look at the brand new NECA Toys House of a Thousand Corpses 20th Anniversary Tailcoat Captain Spaulding.
00:15[♪ intro music plays ♪ and whooshes out of frame ♪
00:28Stop by Captain Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Mad Men.
00:32It's fun for the whole family, if you're the Manson family.
00:35Celebrate the 20th anniversary of Rob Zombie's movie House of a Thousand Corpses,
00:39which featured gas, food, murder, and the most shocking tale of carnage ever seen.
00:43This 7-inch scale Captain Spaulding action figure is dressed in red, white, and blue Ringmaster attire
00:49and comes with hat, baton, and interchangeable hand.
00:51Also comes in commemorative 20th anniversary window box packaging.
00:55You folks want fried chicken with your frights?
00:58I thought so.
00:59Just before we get a closer look at the House of a Thousand Corpses 20th Anniversary Tailcoat Captain Spaulding,
01:04I'd like, if I can, first to thank the folks over at NECA that provided this sample we could have a look at.
01:08Good news, if you guys are interested, get your hands on this version of Spaulding.
01:12He's available right now either in stores or online.
01:15The dear Captain is going to stand at about 7 inches in height, or he's going to be about 17 and a half centimeters tall.
01:21Not the first 20th anniversary Captain Spaulding we've looked at on this channel.
01:25Oh, no.
01:26Sliding over the tailcoat version, bringing in the retro cloth release.
01:31Both of them, again, are celebrating the 20th anniversary Captain Spaulding's, well, more so the 20th anniversary House of a Thousand Corpses,
01:37but specifically Captain Spaulding.
01:39One, of course, is all decked out here wearing his retro clothing.
01:42The other one is cast all in plastic.
01:44Not only that, you can see that they're also wearing completely different attire.
01:47Captain Spaulding more familiar with his clown costume.
01:50I do actually like the look of the tailcoat version that he wears when he's first presenting his murder ride.
01:56You won't be getting any takeaway bags with this release.
01:59What you will get, though, instead is his baton.
02:01The baton here is cast in, I'm guessing, probably white plastic,
02:05and then they probably would have painted either end in red and blue.
02:08Matching, of course, the stars and stripes.
02:10Now, this does fit in his hand, although it doesn't fit in either one of his hands right now.
02:14He does actually come included with a secondary hand,
02:17and the hand itself, as you can see, does have love.
02:19Oh, isn't that nice?
02:21No man could really do harm if he's got love tattooed across his fingers.
02:25This actually was pretty hard to first remove.
02:28Actually, you first have to remove the hand, because this is the hand that he has when you get him out of the packaging,
02:31but it was a very difficult thing to do.
02:33I know I'm waving my fingers while I'm saying that.
02:36When you're turning this, there's going to be a fair bit of resistance.
02:39You really do want to turn it as you're pulling it.
02:43And if it helps at all, even though I didn't do it really with this figure,
02:47you can always go as well the route of heating this first with a hairdryer,
02:50just to kind of soften up the plastic.
02:52I think really the culprit in this is probably there was a fair bit of paint on the end of the peg.
02:56You can see there's still a fair bit there,
02:58but once that's removed, you're just going to pop then the new hand in place.
03:02Basically, you're just going to reverse the steps.
03:03You're going to just turn this as you're pushing this,
03:06and then you've got yourself the hand to hold the baton.
03:08I think now that I've done this the second time,
03:10I've probably done it already before,
03:12now that I've done this in this review,
03:14it's probably going to be the hand that's just going to stay in the socket,
03:16because I just would like to more so display the figure with the baton,
03:19and then the baton fits fairly easy.
03:21It just rests against his finger and then inside his thumb.
03:24It holds okay. I mean, it's a little on the looser side,
03:27and you'll also see as well...
03:29I just dropped it. Butterfingers.
03:31You'll see also as well, as you have this a little further down,
03:33it slides right out of his grip and then onto the floor.
03:36I have to go retrieve it. I can see it right here.
03:39I'll have to grab it a little bit later.
03:41One thing I won't certainly drop...
03:43Oh, this black hole keeps continuing to claim all my accessories...
03:46is the figure also comes included with this top hat.
03:48The top hat, I know for certain, has been cast in white plastic.
03:51It's a fairly... I don't want to say it's the softest of plastic,
03:54but you can see there's a little bit of give to it.
03:56It does fit over his head, but it fits more with friction.
04:00When you put it down, you kind of have to really force it onto his head,
04:03and even then, it doesn't really stay on his head to the best of ways.
04:06Like, if I was to tip this upside down, will it survive?
04:09Watch this thing fall on the floor.
04:11No. No, it survives the blizzard test.
04:13The only one concern I really have with this is putting this on top of his head.
04:16The face has been painted so well that I would worry
04:19it would start to rub off some of the paint on the top of his forehead.
04:22Now, you could choose, really.
04:24You could leave this off altogether if you prefer.
04:26I think for me, at least, if this is the look that he's going with
04:29in the movie, this is the look I'm going to go with when putting this guy on the shelf.
04:32So I'm only going to probably do this once or twice,
04:34and I'm probably never going to remove the hat again.
04:36I'm obviously going to remove it right now.
04:38Just before I do that, though, I want to show you guys, like, it's painted pretty well.
04:41There are a few little errors where you can see, like, the red's bled onto the white,
04:44but for the most part, it's a nice-looking hat.
04:46It's a nice-looking hat.
04:48The hat doesn't quite match the colors, though, that they've used for the blue,
04:51and you can see, like, the red is a little bit more darker here on his jacket,
04:54but it's not a bad thing. It's not certainly a deal-breaker at all.
04:57We're just going to remove the hat. We're going to put it off to the side.
04:59Getting a closer look, though, at Spalding's sculpt,
05:02man, that's a good-looking Captain Spalding.
05:05Of course, he only has the face paint on the front.
05:07The thing, though, I think that was nice, from a touch to detail,
05:10is that NECA actually put a little...
05:12You can see, like, there's a little gradient transitioning a color,
05:15so it's more of a dirtier white on the front,
05:18but it doesn't just abruptly stop right here where there's just a sharp line.
05:23You can see, like, it goes just a little bit progressively into that flesh tone,
05:26so it looks like the makeup would have been smeared across his skin.
05:29Good-looking head sculpt, though, overall.
05:31I don't really have any complaints at all with it.
05:33Got a little bit, though, of the white added into his beard,
05:36a little bit of the makeup, of course, that would have been on there as well,
05:38if you've got the darker colors around the eyes.
05:40It's a little harder to make out those pupils,
05:42just because there's so much dark around it,
05:43but the face is so expertly painted here.
05:45I think they've done a nice job on it.
05:47For his outfit, his outfit consists of his hot dog tee that he wears in the movie,
05:52and, of course, then he's got himself the tall tail...
05:54the tailed jacket over top of that.
05:56The jacket is made of a softer plastic.
05:58One thing I was kind of worried about was peeling away the jacket
06:01and finding some blue stains underneath.
06:03You can see, so far, it hasn't happened at all.
06:05Again, it's a pretty soft plastic.
06:07They've, of course, put the stripes there on the front,
06:09little stars on the sides there as well.
06:11He's got the stars and stripes also here on his sleeves.
06:13The blue that they used is really good.
06:15The red... the red you can clearly see, like, they probably would have painted,
06:19I'm guessing, the red over top,
06:21because it doesn't look like there's much bleed through the white.
06:23So I think they probably would have painted over top of the white.
06:26That's my guess, at least.
06:28The paint overall, for the most part, is pretty good.
06:30There are a few little areas here, like the polka dots on his pants, for example,
06:34excuse me, where you can see, like, a little bit of the blue kind of bleeding through.
06:38I mean, if you kind of buy a little bit more into this,
06:40Captain Spaulding, I can't imagine, even washes these clothes.
06:43For what we get here, I think the polka dots are pretty good.
06:46There are a few little areas where the polka dots aren't so much white as the more lighter blue.
06:50Of course, you've got the larger Kylen shoes down below.
06:52One thing that's nice to see is at least that they are articulated,
06:55because the one thing I was having a problem with getting this guy out of the packaging
06:58was he wasn't standing properly.
07:00Then I realized he does actually have articulation in his ankles,
07:02so it might help just to kind of level him off and get him a better way to stand properly.
07:07Speaking of articulation, this guy's going to be a little bit more limited,
07:10more so from the waist down.
07:12The figure's head, first of all, isn't limited at all.
07:15He's got a full range where you can rotate the head all the way around.
07:18He moves up, he moves down.
07:20You can also see, as well, his little lapel.
07:22I think that was a chicken. It was a little chicken skull.
07:25Head moves up, head moves down.
07:26You can also rock it back and forth, but quite a lot, actually.
07:29The arms rotate also all the way around.
07:31You can easily hinge them out.
07:33Maybe not necessarily at 90 degrees, a little less than 90.
07:37The figure does also have a swivel in his bicep,
07:39or swivel, I should say, in his elbow, which also gives you a hinge there as well.
07:42Hands rotate.
07:43Even if you want to swap to this hand, it still rotates the exact same way.
07:46Yeah, I haven't forgot. The baton is still down there.
07:49Here's the only part that's a little more limited on the figure.
07:51Instead of having what would normally have been a ball joint on these figures,
07:54you only have just a straight swivel.
07:56That's it.
07:57In order also to execute baggier pants like this,
08:00the figure doesn't have any articulation at all.
08:02There's nothing in the top of the leg.
08:04There certainly isn't anything in the knee.
08:05Even if they were to find a way to put in articulation,
08:08it would only just cut into this, and it would just look awkward anyways.
08:11Like, to bend the knee, just how much of a deep cut that would be on the knee.
08:14It just would look a little out of place.
08:16Luckily, though, the figure does have foot articulation.
08:18You can rock it back and forth, which really does come in aid
08:21when it comes to this guy to stand properly.
08:23You can also move the feet up and down this way,
08:25and I suppose you could really rotate the feet all the way around as well.
08:27To help also, the figure does have pegs on the underside of his feet.
08:31I have yet to really need and require a display stand.
08:34The figure, once you get his feet nice and flat, the figure stands perfectly fine.
08:38Let's get back on his hat.
08:42And let's just slide this guy over, bring back in.
08:45Now, again, this was the 20th anniversary of Captain Spaulding.
08:47This guy did not come included with his clown hats,
08:50but he did come included with his takeaway bag.
08:52Again, just short of picking up, I can see it right now.
08:55I can see it's looking right at me, almost just like laughing at me.
08:58You dropped another one, didn't you?
09:00I did drop another one. Baton, I know. Don't rub it in.
09:02I like that they have approached two different looks to Captain Spaulding.
09:06If you like the way he appears in the murder ride,
09:08as he's, of course, presenting it to all the New Time visitors,
09:11then this is a great figure to be picking up.
09:13It would also work well, I mean,
09:15considering, like, taking some cues from the retro cloth release,
09:18a tailcoat version of Captain Spaulding would also really work quite well
09:21if they used fabric, because, of course, then it would limit any articulation.
09:24You'd still be able to bend in the knees like this guy could.
09:27Maybe that's something that they could consider down the road,
09:29but in the meantime, I'm really liking the one that we get right now.
09:32I did end up finding the baton for Captain Spaulding.
09:35The good thing, at least, though,
09:37and I want to show you here in final looks as well,
09:39if you don't want to have the figure displayed with the top hat on his head,
09:42the same hand that holds the baton
09:44can also be the same hand that holds the top hat.
09:46So there's one way of displaying the figure, if you so wish.
09:49I can understand, certainly, why some would choose
09:52not to have the top hat on top of his head,
09:54for the risk that it could rub away some of the paint
09:56that they spent so much time painting on Spaulding's face in the first place.
09:59The head sculpt for Spaulding is quite good,
10:02even though it's a little dated from the waist down,
10:04because the figure doesn't have as much posability down there,
10:06you can kind of even justify why it can't be there in the first place.
10:09With such large clown pants like this,
10:12it's a very difficult thing to pull off.
10:14Now, granted, they did do that also successfully
10:17with the Tim Curry Pennywise,
10:19so you could very well use the argument that they could do that as well
10:21and give more articulation for Captain Spaulding,
10:23but this guy's never going to really be in a running pose.
10:26I mean, Captain Spaulding really doesn't move all that much anyways in the movie.
10:29I don't think, necessarily, I'm all that disappointed
10:32that the figure has no knee articulation.
10:34He has it where it counts.
10:36That's the head, the shoulders, the elbows,
10:38and even in his feet.
10:39And the feet, I'm actually more happier that he has it there
10:41than he has it in the knees,
10:43because if he didn't have properly poseable feet,
10:45the figure wouldn't stand as good as he does right now.
