00:00Sure, he's got a sword, but where's he going to store it?
00:03Here's a look at McFarlane Toys, DC Multiverse, McFarlane Collector's Edition, Batman Year 2, Batman.
00:26With only a year experience as Gotham City's new protector,
00:30Batman must now confront a nightmare out of the past,
00:32a distorted reflection of himself called the Reaper, who hunted Gotham's criminals a generation earlier.
00:38His methods were harsh and cruel and violent and extreme.
00:41Now, just a new breed of criminal is rising.
00:44The Reaper has returned to deal out a savage brand of justice.
00:47And the only way for Batman to stop the death-dealing vigilante
00:51is to forge an alliance with the man who destroyed his life, his own parents' murderer.
00:55But can the Dark Knight stand to confront the secret of his own deaths,
00:59or will the Reaper's revelations finally cost him his sanity?
01:03I think sometimes when you get lost in your own brand of justice,
01:06you have to go back to your moral compass.
01:08Before we get a closer look at Year 2's Batman,
01:11let's take the tape measure and see how tall the figure stands.
01:13For those already very observant,
01:15we'll notice that this is using the same body as the Batman's spawn Batman.
01:18Of course, I'll be bringing a couple of examples of that in a second.
01:21As for the figure's height,
01:22he's also going to be getting a little longer in the ear.
01:24Because of that, the figure's going to stand actually 7 1⁄2 inches in height,
01:29or roughly 19 centimeters tall.
01:32Yeah, that Batman body I was referring to happened to be this guy right here.
01:35Now, this was the Batman spawn 2-pack Batman.
01:38Some may not have liked the long ears,
01:40although if you don't like the long ears on this one,
01:42you're probably not going to like the long ears on this one either.
01:44Then he was also released as well in a blue cow release that had the shorter ears.
01:49I like this use of the mold a lot more.
01:51Torso, arms, legs, even like the boots,
01:54are all shared between the same three figures.
01:56Yet, though ironically, the one thing that changes with all three
01:59is not only his cape, but his cowl as well.
02:01This use of mold, though, definitely wins biggest cape.
02:03Before we look at how big Batman's cape is,
02:06well, you probably already can see,
02:07the figure first does come in clear with a display stand.
02:09Being that this is also McFarlane Collector's Edition
02:12does happen to have extra fills added down below.
02:15Instead of just the black DC logo,
02:17we get treated to silver instead.
02:19Instead, there's a peg right off to the far corner.
02:21I know as we do these reviews,
02:23if you've kind of watched them after one another,
02:25if you happen to check out my playlist,
02:26and I always really encourage you guys to check out my playlist
02:28if you have a chance.
02:29Some things like this will be said frequently
02:31because there's only so much really you can talk about
02:33when it comes to circular display stand.
02:35Let's just stop talking about it.
02:37Actually, the one thing I did also want to mention
02:38that there's a little lip of plastic on the bottom of mine.
02:42I'm sure that's not going to be on every display stand.
02:43It hasn't been the case with every display stand.
02:45It happens to be on mine.
02:46Stop talking about display stands.
02:48The figure does also come and clue with a training card.
02:51Sort of more the inspiration as to why the figure does have a sword
02:54and why he has a gun holster on his torso.
02:57Though also ironic when you really think about that Batman.
03:01First of all, how often have we gotten ourselves pistols
03:03or guns for that matter with any other figure?
03:06And yet the one figure that we actually get granted a gun
03:09happens to be a figure that's completely our character.
03:12That's completely against the idea of even using one.
03:14Anyways, though, going back, though, to the training card,
03:17there's Batman posed with a sword, the curved sea sword.
03:21That kind of looked like a question mark sword.
03:23Posed, I probably will when it comes to displaying this guy on the shelf.
03:26I'll try to get him in somewhat of a pose like this with the sword sticking forward.
03:31I love this look.
03:31I actually even think I have this comic in my boxes upstairs.
03:34I really wanted to kind of go through.
03:37You don't have to really make the noise.
03:38That's not really the noise of what comics would make when you're kind of ruffling through them.
03:41But if I could have only, in hindsight, gone back, pulled the issue out,
03:45I would have had it displayed right over here, Batman over here.
03:48Obviously, the color, one thing that does change between the characters
03:50is that this guy's going with more of the black routes of a cape and cowl,
03:55where the one on the front is obviously doing in blue instead.
03:57I wonder if we are going to be getting...
03:59I know we've just...
03:59How much time have we wasted just looking at display stands and looking at training cards?
04:03The one last thing I will say, though, I do hope that we get this in a full blue treatment.
04:07Anyways, on the back, they're using as much of the real estate space
04:11that gets afforded these backs of the cards.
04:13I mean, like, it starts here, it ends here.
04:15That's how much I had to read at the beginning of this video.
04:18What? You read that at the beginning of the video?
04:19You just thought I pulled this out of my brain?
04:22I can't do that.
04:24I could try.
04:25I'm not going to do that, though.
04:26It does also say Batman Year 2.
04:28I do kind of wish that they could have added the date for that comic,
04:30just in case you didn't know when exactly Year 2 commenced.
04:33But that's a nice-looking card.
04:34Okay.
04:36Stated already the obvious, it's, again, weird to think that we're getting ourselves
04:40first a gun with a DC multiverse figure.
04:42When was really the last time that we got one?
04:44And of all the characters that you choose to include a firearm with,
04:48happens to be a character that's completely against the idea of it.
04:51Now, obviously, if you've read Year 2, Batman does have a gun in that issue.
04:54He does have a holster on the front of his torso.
04:56So if to release this figure with neither one of those things, I would say,
05:00hey, wait a minute.
05:01You need to go back to the source material, Todd.
05:04Clearly, though, he did.
05:05He used the source material, and we get ourselves a gun.
05:07Now, the gun does hold in his hands.
05:10The hands that he has right now are more really suitable for the sword.
05:13If you try your best to kind of get the gun in there, he holds it better on this side,
05:18but you kind of have to have more of the trigger finger being the thing that keeps the gun in place
05:23because the grip is a little too wide, and the gun, as a result of that, sits really loose.
05:28Did I just drop the gun?
05:29I did drop the gun.
05:30Let me just grab that.
05:31There we go.
05:32You can also try on this side as well, but Batman has very arthritic hands,
05:36as you can probably see for yourself, which, again, really works well for the sword.
05:40It doesn't really cut it, though, when it comes to the gun.
05:42The gun just sits so very awkwardly, look at this, in his hand.
05:47This would definitely be the better of the two.
05:48Now, there is another option, obviously.
05:50You can also swap the hand out for this hand.
05:52This hand does the better of the jobs.
05:54Get this guy to stand here for a second.
05:56Does a much better job, yes, to hold the gun.
05:59Just go ahead and get the pistol in there.
06:01Slide it down, slide it down.
06:03And, of course, you would just swap this out.
06:04The only thing, unfortunately, it has to then sacrifice,
06:07which, again, like if you're going to be swapping out the hands,
06:08you would think that they would already have put also a trigger finger there.
06:12Anyways, this does hold the gun the best.
06:14He does also come in clue with a punching fist.
06:16Only one.
06:17Only one.
06:17So he has to punch a villain with only one side of his body.
06:20That, again, swaps out.
06:21A trend that you may have already noticed, though,
06:23is that he does have some additional highlights added.
06:26So while, unfortunately, he's not completely blue,
06:28like on the actual card in the comic,
06:30they at least give you the suggestion of that,
06:32that there's highlights on the figure's body.
06:34Now, again, you could look at the black being the shadow part of the character.
06:36You could also look at, then, the blue being the highlights on a black clad costume.
06:41And so it was really sort of been a debate with many collectors.
06:43Like, is Batman really technically wearing a blue cape that just happens to have shadows?
06:47Like, there's not a lot of light shining on it?
06:49Or is the blue the highlights to a black costume?
06:53You maybe let me know down below in the comments section.
06:55What do you think it was?
06:56I was kind of really thought that it was just...
06:58Well, I shouldn't say I always thought,
06:59because, you know, depending on what comic it was,
07:01Batman usually would wear a black cape and a black cowl.
07:04I don't just spend so much time talking about this.
07:06The Batman does also have, by the way, a holster.
07:09So you can take yourself the pistol,
07:10which, unfortunately, doesn't have much in the way.
07:12I don't think it has any paint, for that matter.
07:14It looks like it's just been molded in gray plastic.
07:16And there's technically a place to store this.
07:19Batman does, for the first time, have a holster on the front of his torso.
07:22I mean, if anything, he's advertising to everybody.
07:25I'm a guy that doesn't believe in firearms,
07:27and yet, though, I'm walking around with one right on the front of his torso.
07:31The thing that's kind of interesting, also, about this, too,
07:34is I thought the holster would be a glued piece to his torso,
07:37when, in actual fact, it does look like it's a separate piece.
07:41Now, the only thing you can't do, though, is you can't peel off the cape.
07:44The cape is not only adhered on the front,
07:46but if you look on the back of the cape, too,
07:47it's very securely pegged on the back of the figure's body.
07:51So there's no way to take the cape off
07:52if you have ideas in mind to slide the holster off.
07:56The holster, by the way, doesn't ruin at all the emblem on the front of his body.
07:58I mean, as it being a separate piece, everything is still nicely painted underneath.
08:03I mean, they technically could have not just painted the emblem,
08:06but they actually did.
08:07They actually did.
08:09So what are we talking about?
08:10Okay, yeah, the figure does come also included with a sword.
08:13The real thing about this figure is the fact he's known for having a big cape.
08:16He's known for being very back-heavy,
08:18which is probably something you're probably very observantly aware of right now.
08:22I'll just lay the figure down.
08:23He also comes included with this really neat-looking sword.
08:26Now, I don't know if there's a correct term given for a sword that's curved like this.
08:30I'm sure somebody can let me know down below.
08:32It does look, though, that it's been molded in gray plastic.
08:35I mean, even if you're not cutting anybody with this blade,
08:38it looks more like a scythe.
08:41You could certainly just bash them with the spikes that are around the gauntlet here,
08:45around the hilt.
08:46This does look like this has been the part that's been obviously painted,
08:49so they probably would have just cast all of this in dark gray plastic
08:52and then gone in there, careful, and painted all of this in silver.
08:57Now, this does fit into his hands, going back to the fallen Batman here.
09:01You can take it and fit into this hand, for example.
09:04But again, it's a weird fit.
09:06Like, it just seems to me, like, why would they have given him this specific hand
09:10when he really doesn't do a great job to hold it?
09:12If anything, to go back to the well,
09:14you would probably end up maybe using this hand as the better option.
09:17Or again, like, if this is just really the intended plan,
09:20that maybe Batman just has a gestured hand on this side,
09:23and that this is the hand that you're going to give him the sword for.
09:26I mean, again, if you go back and look at the source material,
09:28technically, Batman does have the sword on this side.
09:32He doesn't have it on the other.
09:34But again, like, if you wanted to have on this side,
09:35I would probably really recommend popping off the arthritic hand
09:38and swapping out for the gripping one instead.
09:41Now, you may be asking yourself, reviewer,
09:43Is there a place, is there, that you can store the sword
09:46when it's not displayed on Batman?
09:48Well, in his hands, at least.
09:49Well, there is somewhat.
09:50If you look behind the cape, you peel away the curtains,
09:54because this is a loose piece.
09:55What I did at the beginning of this review,
09:57and you could follow suit if you want,
09:59just take the blade.
10:00Although to do this on really Batman's body,
10:02you probably would end up slicing a suit
10:03and probably cutting his skin.
10:05But you can take this sword
10:06and sort of just slide it in the back like that.
10:10Now, obviously, you're still going to be able to see where it is.
10:12Oh, it's right over there.
10:13But the cape at least covers over top of it.
10:15There is a place, technically,
10:16as long as Batman really doesn't sit down,
10:18because that would dig you right into the spine.
10:21But there's a place at least to store the sword
10:23if you don't want to have it in his hands.
10:24Now, I'm going to go the right of displaying it in his hands.
10:26If you don't want to do that, you don't have to do that.
10:28I'm not going to force you.
10:29I'm not going to tell you that you have to do that.
10:31Let's go ahead and take the sword, shall we?
10:33We'll just put that off to the side.
10:34I guess we can kind of...
10:35Do we want to keep...
10:36I don't feel comfortable really with having Batman with a firearm,
10:39so let's just put that off to the side.
10:41You know, again, like,
10:41while he is still using the same body.
10:43So if you were to look at, like, colors,
10:45it's not really the same gray as the single-pack Batman spawn Batman.
10:50Same emblem, same utility belt from the side of it.
10:53Very small trunks.
10:54Again, Batman's packing small heat.
10:57And again, like, the legs and the boots are all basically the same.
10:59Where he does, though, change is clearly, though, the cowl.
11:02The cowl was shorter on this one.
11:04He had a little bit more squintier eyes.
11:06Because this Batman isn't even, again, like that close to really resembling the one that we got from the two-pack either.
11:11Whereas this one had the darker body.
11:13Not as dark of a gray.
11:15So this one doesn't have as dark of a gray as those.
11:16I think really of the three grays, I think this is really the best of the three that we've gotten so far.
11:22Again, while having maybe some inspirational cues, the longer ears,
11:26it's definitely a completely different head sculpt.
11:28And something that they've also done lately here with Batman,
11:31and we've also gotten this with the treatment of,
11:33I'm trying to think of the one that Scarecrow Batman that had the cloth cape.
11:37The cloth cape did use, though, the hush Batman body.
11:40But one thing that they changed to it was they actually made the Batman head articulated.
11:44So he wasn't just relegated to having his neck being the thing that did all the movement.
11:48If you went back and you looked at these Batmans,
11:51the head was actually still attached to the neck.
11:54The same can also be then said for this one.
11:56The head and the neck were all one piece.
11:59So, well, unfortunately, though, for obvious reasons,
12:01there'd be no way that they could make this in a fabric outfit, a fabric cape,
12:05just because you'd have to run a wire into this.
12:08It wouldn't really gel with the rest of the cowl.
12:10So in this case, they have to make the sacrifices of giving us a year two Batman
12:13that does have a plastic cape rather than a fabric cape.
12:17But at least, though, changes have been made where now Batman does have
12:20independent articulation for his head.
12:23The head is really nice, though.
12:24Now, even if you don't really like the length of his ear,
12:27even if that ear is a little bit shorter, that's a really good looking likeness.
12:30I don't say likeness of Batman, because Batman obviously has changed of the comics.
12:34I do think, though, by adding now blue, the highlights there to the cowl,
12:37you get some nice expression, though, on his face.
12:40It isn't just relying on the black alone.
12:42I like that they've also given him very Adam West styles of eyebrows there as well.
12:46His face is a little on the pale side, but not pale enough that it bothers me too much.
12:50I don't think it really needed to be, I think, a little bit more of a warmer color
12:53like they did for this version of Batman.
12:55But man, that's a really good looking head sculpt.
12:58I hope, though, that we do get this in an all blue.
13:01Now, again, the cape is having, unfortunately, go back a bit,
13:04because the cape now being in plastic.
13:06But again, to get a cape of this form, of this size,
13:09and be able to hold its weight like this,
13:12I think the plastic would have been the easiest route and probably the most simplest route.
13:15Because to do this in all fabric, there's no way that the cape would look like this.
13:19It would just be a disastrous mess.
13:21The cape is full.
13:22I mean, it's large, obviously.
13:23It's also adding a lot of back heaviness to the Batman, too.
13:26So putting him down on the shelf, you may want to make use of a display stand.
13:29It's almost like, where is the display stand?
13:31I was just talking about that.
13:32Oh, it's right over here.
13:33It's almost like the figure really does need a display stand,
13:35and they do include one.
13:37So definitely make use of that.
13:38The pegs are clearly on the bottoms of the figure's feet.
13:40Plug it onto the display stand, and it will prevent Batman from falling over.
13:43Of course, you've got some nice highlights added there to the gauntlets,
13:47all down the glove, all across the hands, all across his very small trunks.
13:51I hate to keep drawing everyone's attention to that.
13:53And stripes down the front of his boots as well.
13:55I do really think that those are nice little attentions to detail.
13:59Some may not really like this size of Batman.
14:02I think the hush Batman is still a little too big,
14:04but I actually like the spawn Batman.
14:06I think that's a good sized body, and it works really well for the year two Batman body.
14:11Now, for the figures of articulation,
14:12if you're familiar with this one over here,
14:13and you're familiar with the one that was over here as well,
14:15which just is this two-pack here,
14:17the articulation, short of now adding the head point,
14:20is essentially going to be the exact same.
14:22So while this Batman now benefits from having two points of articulation,
14:25so not only now in his head, but also down in his neck,
14:28the head independently will rotate all the way around, as it will.
14:32Head can look up, bend down, and back and forth.
14:34I kind of like the lower look to Batman's head like this.
14:37But also as well, the figure does have a ball joint in his neck.
14:40It is, granted, harder to get in there just because he's got so much cape around him,
14:44but you can move that around as well.
14:47Upper torso is going to be on a ball joint.
14:48I wonder if maybe one of the reasons why they made the holster as a separate piece
14:52was so that you could move the torso around.
14:54Although even if they had glued it here,
14:56it's not like it's necessarily attached to his abdomen,
14:59you probably would still be able to do the same.
15:01The arms do hinge out 90 degrees, or a T-pose.
15:04They move forward and back.
15:06And because, again, there's enough space between the cape and the back of his body,
15:09you could technically also rotate Batman's arms all the way around.
15:12There's a swivel at the bicep.
15:14There's also a double hinge on the elbow.
15:16And the hands rotate all the way around.
15:18Now, unfortunately, though, because if you're looking at his arms,
15:21Batman sort of has the same issue that the Hush Batman had before.
15:24The first wave, or the first version of Hush Batman, if you remember,
15:28had the thing where they basically just took the forearms
15:31and they colored it all in black.
15:33There's really no section that suggests the idea that this is an arm or a glove.
15:37I mean, there's a line that they've painted right across the hinge joint
15:40for the bicep, what divides the bicep and the forearm.
15:43If looking at that, you could kind of get an idea as to where the glove should be.
15:47If you look at it from this side, though,
15:49it does actually look like they've just used the lower arm
15:51and they've molded it all in black plastic.
15:53I think I probably would have maybe made the glove a little bit shorter
15:56so that there was more visible gray
15:58and that there was a more clearly in-your-face idea
16:01of where the glove exactly starts.
16:03Again, you can see it more here from this side.
16:05From this side, it does actually look like
16:06the glove should have been a little bit lower.
16:09Anyways, the hands do rotate all the way around.
16:10You can hinge them back and forth
16:11whether you want to use the arthritic hand
16:13or if you want to swap it out for the other one instead.
16:15Legs split out. No issues there at all.
16:17I mean, and actually, like, look how far of a splits
16:19Batman can also do as well.
16:21The legs can move forward.
16:22Not as far, though.
16:23You can also move them back.
16:24There's a swivel at the top of the thigh.
16:26Double hinge on the knee.
16:28There is no articulation for the lower boot
16:30and that comes with the territory of this Batman body.
16:32Being that the boot is just a continued sculpt
16:34for the rest of the calf,
16:35there's nothing that you can move independently.
16:37You can, however, move independently his ankles.
16:40Up and down.
16:41Back and forth.
16:42And, of course, the figure does also have toe articulation as well.
16:45One thing I did kind of notice, too, with this Batman
16:47is not that he had loose ankles.
16:49In fact, actually, this Batman's ankles are pretty good.
16:51But, unfortunately, though, just with how much weight now
16:54Batman has on the back of his body,
16:56you either feel compelled to lean him really further forward
16:59or you want to kind of lean him back.
17:01Like, if you lean him forward,
17:02then he feels like he wants to kind of collapse.
17:05If you lean him back to compensate,
17:06then you've got the weight of the cape on the back.
17:09So this is certainly one of those cases
17:10where I'm going to bring back in the display stand
17:12just to ensure that Batman, while I'm still talking away,
17:15isn't going to fall over.
17:16All in all, though, it's a really nice-looking Batman.
17:18Batman, not maybe liked by all, obviously,
17:21because of the two things.
17:22Like, yes, too crazy of a cape in some people's eyes.
17:25The weird use of now an included sword
17:27and also the big one,
17:29the fact that Batman does also have his gun.
17:31Where did I put his gun?
17:32The gun's somewhere over here.
17:33Oh, here, it's right over here.
17:34The fact that Batman does come in clear with a gun,
17:36not just to be held in his hand,
17:37but the fact he's advertising to everybody,
17:39hey, everybody, I got a firearm,
17:41seems a little out of place,
17:42but it fits then well with the format
17:44of Batman being from year two.
17:45I still wish I could have found that comic.
17:48Hindsight, you know, again,
17:49like you always realize these things after the fact.
17:52But again, bringing back in the other two uses of this mold,
17:54I think we've also got another Batman
17:55that has used this mold before.
17:58I still like this one.
17:59I think this is still probably my favorite use of the mold.
18:01I do really think, though,
18:03that the gray works really well.
18:04I love the additional highlights that they've added, too.
18:06Yeah, Batman's cowl, Batman's gloves,
18:08Batman's trunks, lower, smaller, otherwise,
18:10and, of course, now his boots.
18:12I think the colors look nicer on this Batman,
18:14but again, I think for the options available for this mold,
18:18some probably would maybe favor, I think,
18:19more to this or this one,
18:20just because it seems so really strange and foreign
18:23that Batman not only is going to have a big cape like this,
18:26but that also he's carrying around a sword and a gun.
18:29I tried to get the pose to look like the car.
18:31Did I do it okay?
18:32No?
18:33Close?
18:34Okay, I'll take it close.
18:35Batman here, though,
18:36is displayed with a lot of help from the display stand.
18:38If not for that,
18:39with how much budget went into just making the cape for Batman,
18:42there's no way he'd be able to balance on his own.
18:46Speaking of balancing, though,
18:47that's one thing, unfortunately,
18:48I'm having to do here with the sword that he has.
18:51With this hand not really being a proper hand for him to hold it,
18:55he really only barely grips onto it.
18:58I mean, it's kind of weird, though,
18:59that they've given him a gripping hand,
19:01but they've given it for the other side of his body.
19:03Yet to go back,
19:04and if you really want it to match the card,
19:06Batman's holding the sword that he is on this side,
19:08not on the other.
19:09Of course, the figure does also have a holstered gun.
19:12I think, actually, to go back and look at the card,
19:14he doesn't have the gun at the time,
19:16but being that it's an included accessory,
19:18I mean, how many times can we also say
19:19the Caped Crusaders ever had a firearm
19:21have to have it holstered?
19:23The thing about at least the holster
19:24is it's not glued to his torso.
19:26I suppose if you could get in there
19:28and pry off the cape,
19:29I wouldn't really advise it myself,
19:31because it's glued on the front,
19:32it's pegged on the back.
19:33If you did take that off, though,
19:34it does look like that the holster
19:36is just only being held in place by his cape,
19:38and nothing more.
19:40I like the head sculpt.
19:41I do look at this, though,
19:42and I can't help but keep thinking.
19:44Taro was really as big about using
19:45as much of the mold as they can.
19:47With this head, with this cape,
19:49and with this look of Batman,
19:50I wouldn't be surprised at all,
19:52and I hope that they do
19:53release a blue release of this guy,
19:55where maybe inverting the colors,
19:57so everything that was really highlighted
19:59in blue on this one
20:00could be then highlighted in black
20:02on a blue cow Batman instead.
